Through his wide variety of clinical experience in private practice and public hospital settings, Kiran provides evidence-based exercise programs that are specifically tailored to each individual client. Cheers to Strathbogie wineries

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL FOR the annual Dookie Wine Show, Strathbogie wineries were declared winners, as Maygars Hill 2018 was awarded best shiraz with a gold medal and same for their reserve cabernet.

Maygars Hill, in the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges was most importantly awarded the top trophy - Wine of Show - at the long awaited presentation lunch at Mitchelton Winery recently.

The show is open to wineries across Victoria and is an important benchmarking tool for them, according to show director Robert Paul.

Maygars Hill was awarded the best cabernet for their 2019 Reserve Cabernet.

It then went into the taste off for the best red across all categories of red wine.

It won the Best Red Wine of Show and was then the overall winner.

This puts the wine onto the taste off for the Premiers trophy in January Fowles Are You Game also received a gold medal in the Arneis category.

Established with the aim of promoting local wines, the Dookie Wine Show is held in conjunction with the Dookie Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre, the Shepparton Adviser, the Greater Shepparton City Council, and Goulburn River Valley Tourism.

The event is also held in conjunction with GOTAFE, as the Dookie Wine Show Dinner is part of the GOTAFE master class program, and is a great way of challenging and teaching the students, as various high profile chefs have participated in these dinners over the years, and the students benefit greatly from first-hand experience with industry professionals.

A PUBLIC meeting was held with Strathbogie Shire representatives and residents at the old skate park in Violet Town to discuss the proposal of a free recreational vehicles site last month.

There was a good turn up of local people, most of them were very concerned about the application for this particular site due to the constant activity of small children who are regular users of that area.

Local families got together 20 years ago and fundraised over $20,000 (in cash and kind) to create a skate park for their children and the youth of the town.

An enormous dedicated effort by both parents and children saw them meet their goal and produce a new source of recreation for the town.

They not only raised the money but having some concreters among the families they also physically poured and cured the slab.

These parents are now grandparents and are bringing their grandchildren to enjoy the facility they created 20 years ago.

This year Violet Town residents were gifted a wonderful new skate bowl in the same area.

However, the old skate park is still very popular for younger children who haven’t yet mastered the skills to use the bowl.

The old skate park consists of some metal ramps and a large flat concrete rectangle slab that provides a perfect training platform.

It gives more stability for immature bodies, which are still gaining confidence to stay upright on a bike, scooter or skateboard.

This makes it a popular and frequented site for families with very young children.

This vehicle movement among children on scooters, skateboards and bikes was one of the main reasons of concern raised by the public on Thursday night We feel the risk of danger to young children is quite high.

It only takes seconds for a child to run off out of the peripheral vision of their parents and an un expectant RV user to suddenly occupy the same space of ground, to create a tragic outcome.

Let’s keep the old skate park to be a portion of our well-planned sports precinct, and retain it for our community’s recreational activities.

Year 12s awarded at Euroa Secondary College LAST Thursday the year 12 VCE results were sent to students and provided to schools.

Euroa Secondary College’s dux is Will Mason with a score of 91.25.

Mr Mason is applying for a cadetship with Qantas to train to be an airline pilot.

His second option is to enrol in a university course to study to become a pilot.

Mr Mason is also the 2021 recipient of the George Hunter Scholarship which will provide him with assistance to complete his study in this field.

Mr Mason said that he was relieved.

“It feels like it has been a long wait since the exams. I have been able to achieve what I need to gain entry into the study that I want to do,” Mr Mason said.

“Thank you to the teachers as they have been very helpful, especially through Remote Learning.

“They have been helpful to my family and provided support.

“Thank you also to my parents. It’s been a tough two years and I am glad to be through it.”

Nash Greasley, another of Euroa Secondary College’s high achievers, said he was feeling good.

“I am happy,” Mr Greasley said.

“I did a bit better than I expected.

“I have applied to Deakin University to do a Bachelor of Commerce.”

“2021 year 12 students have certainly developed these qualities as they have admirably soldiered on to finish their studies and sit final exams in November.

“Our families have been incredibly supportive during this time and we appreciate their input, particularly during Remote Learning.

“I also acknowledge the work of our staff, particularly the teachers who have taught year 12 students over the past six years.”

Mrs Winfield said it was very pleasing to know that all of our students have been successful and are able to gain their chosen pathways.

“We have students who are academic high achievers who go onto university study, students who further their study or training at TAFE and others who go to work, some into School Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships,” she said.

“Each year we also celebrate our top five VCE achievers and our VCAL achievers at an assembly early in February in the following year and look forward to doing this with students next year.”

Graytown Transfer Station will be open from 8am to noon on the Monday December 27 and Monday December 3 as a result of the public holiday closures falling on Saturdays. Please remember our transfer stations are also closed on days of Total Fire Ban, Extreme and Code Red Fire Danger Ratings.

Pools Our pools are open every day except for Christmas Day and when the temperature drops below 22 degrees.

VICTORIA Police are running Operation Roadwise this week and are strongly encouraging all motorists to take care while driving this Christmas.

Mitchell Police Service Area Acting Senior Sergeant Hillier - Highway Patrol reports that with COVID-19 restrictions easing and coming into the Christmas/New Year’s period they expect increased traffic in regional areas and holiday destinations.

“We are aiming to reduce road trauma by targeting impaired driving, speeding and unauthorised driving,” Act Sen Sgt Hillier said.

“We are appealing for motorists to allow extra time for their travel, manage their fatigue and don’t drive if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“There will be a highly visible Police presence on the roads to reinforce positive driving behaviours and lessen road trauma.”

Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Glenn Weir said there had been 223 lives lost on Victorian roads to date in 2021.

“This has already surpassed the 211 lives lost on Victorian roads in 2020,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said.

He said October to December was one of the highest risk periods on the road with more travel to holiday destinations in regional areas, and more social activities in the lead up to Christmas.

In November alone, there were 27 lives lost on Victorian roads.

“This is a significant amount of trauma which occurred around the time that many Victorians were returning to the roads after lockdown ,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said.

“In many of these cases,

Minister for Police Lisa Neville today joined Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Glenn Weir to launch Operation Roadwise, and drive home the importance of staying safe this Christmas.

With the festive season upon us, school holidays beginning, and after a particularly challenging couple of years, Victorians will be more eager than ever to get out and about.

Importantly, Victoria Police will also be out in force during this period as part of

Operation Roadwise, which runs from last Friday to this Sunday.

Police from state and local road policing units, general duties and other operational policing units will be targeting driving offences across metropolitan and regional Victoria to take dangerous drivers off the road and save lives.

During last year’s Operation Roadwise, 10 people lost their lives on our roads and Victoria Police detected more than 14,216 traffic offences, including 6201 speeding offences and a further 463 people caught drink driving and 535 people caught with drugs in their system.

A Christmas tree with baubles representing each of the lives lost on our roads this year is now up at the Victoria Police headquarters - a reminder that lives lost on our roads is not about statistics, it’s about real families who have experienced the trauma of losing a loved one.

Drivers are reminded not to drink or take drugs if they’re planning to drive, and to use simple strategies that can reduce risks on the road, including driver reviver strategies to avoid fatigue, staying off mobile phones while driving, and being alert on unfamiliar roads.

Female artists should have a public space in town

ARTC appoints new design contractor for Inland Rail

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL TWO years ago, before COVID-19, local Leah Jones had created a group in town in order to provide female artists with a safe space to showcase their artworks, but the pandemic put a stop to their activities.

Today, Mrs Jones still believes Euroa should have a dedicated space for artists, like they with the Violet Town Arts Music and Performance Collective (VAMP) or the Hub in Strathbogie and other spaces in the shire.

“I believe that women in art should be more in the spotlight in Euroa, because there isn’t any permanent facilities for them at all at the moment,” Mrs Jones said.

“Women are too often forgotten in our public spaces, especially in art, but art is key to rehabilitate women to the places they belong to, which is everywhere.”

The only space with an art dedicated space is the Euroa Butter Factory, and Mrs Jones believes we need a space where “artists can meet other artists, and showcase their works”.

Mrs Jones is specialised in wearable art, and has recently taken on painting.

“My garments are made out of wool and silk and created whole pieces of fabric and then wrapped those pieces of fabric around the model and created my art that way,” she said.

“They are intriguing artworks, very interesting, people still wear them to this day.

“I recently painted a calendar too.

“We should find a way for artists, especially female artists, to have an allocated space for them, maybe we could look into a partnership with the Euroa arboretum for instance.”

With the nomination by council of Kobe Pallis as art and culture officer and Laura Binks as Mayor, Mrs Jones hopes things will change for local artists.

“I’d like to see a group happen without necessarily being at the reins of it,”

“I’d like to see a bigger focus on arts so that locals would be immersed by it and understand the importance of art in our daily lives.

“It’s a whole educational process that we need to implement, we don’t have it yet, it’s part of the problem.

“I think Strathbogie Shire Council should really focus on offering this artistic dynamic to Euroa.”

Council recently adopted it’s 2021-25 council plan which puts a significant focus on arts, culture, and engagement as its strategic focus area is about engaging, creating, uniting.

It aims to foster and support create responses in our community.

One of the initiatives of the plan is named “review and implement the arts and culture strategy to support the community in driving diversity in activities and events”.

Cr Binks said they are inspired by our creatives and they want to celebrate arts and culture in our community.

“We’re actively working to support our vibrant arts and culture scene - through our council plan and the

initiatives from the arts and culture strategy - but also through the recent appointment of an arts and culture officer,” Cr Binks said.

“This role was created to facilitate connections between community members, funding programs and tourism stakeholders.

“It will also identify opportunities to promote arts and culture initiatives within our region.

“Our arts and culture officer will work to enhance what our community already offers in this space and will develop a platform for creatives and cultural groups to engage effectively with each other and the broader community.”

Cr Binks said council regards arts and culture as a priority.

“We’re working hard provide the support it needs,” she said.

THE Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has engaged McConnell Dowell to complete the first phase of designs and early delivery activities for Inland Rail in Victoria.

The $16.4 million contract includes design and preparatory works at four sites on the existing North East Rail Line to enable Inland Rail double-stacked freight trains to run between Beveridge and Albury.

According to an ARTC’s spokesperson the project is expected to support hundreds of jobs in Victoria, and provide an $8 billion boost in Gross State Product from construction and direct operation of the rail line.

McConnell Dowell will conduct site investigations to inform the preliminary and detailed designs for utilities, signaling, track slews and the update of rail

structures at the SeymourAvenel Road bridge in Seymour, Murray Valley Highway in Barnawartha North, Wangaratta Station Precinct, Wangaratta and Beaconsfield Parade precinct in Glenrowan.

ARTC Inland Rail interim chief executive Rebecca Pickering congratulated McConnell Dowell on being awarded the contract and said bringing them on board was a crucial step for Australia’s largest infrastructure project.

“This is a significant milestone in the delivery of this important project,” Mrs Pickering said.

“It shows that the ARTC is getting on with delivering Inland Rail and bringing the Australian Government’s vision of the project to life.

“We’ve selected McConnell Dowell based on their experience delivering

major projects including multi-million rail, bridges, railway stations and roads both in Australia and New Zealand, and globally.”

Mrs Pickering said construction will start midnext year, after all planning approvals have been received.

“McConnell Dowell and their main design subcontractor Aurecon will now oversee the detailed design of new bridges, train station modifications and track lowering at these initial sites in Victoria, while we await planning, heritage and environmental approvals,” she said.

“They will also be undertaking early delivery activities to get ready for construction, which includes minor civil works, overhead wiring and signal gantry installation for the sites.”

Keep with the country town vibe OUR community has made it clear that it wants an underpass - a hidden road-underrail solution in keeping with our countrytown vibe.

While an over-arching bridge threatens to dominate the landscape and dwarf the surrounding heritage buildings, an underpass will disappear out of view and lessen visual clutter.

The community has become very aware of the possibilities that come with clever design, including a scaled rail crossing and a people-focussed Rail Precinct.

Now is the time for the Strathbogie Shire Council and the ARTC to work with those who want a state-of-the-art underpass and vibrant rail hub.

Our future station precinct should be welcoming, light-filled, pedestrian friendly and beautifully landscaped.

This public space could become a fabulous landmark, accessed from both sides of the track, sitting proudly at the top end of Binney Street.

We must continue to lobby ARTC and the planning minister for an outcome that delivers a rail precinct we can all be proud of.

Now is the time for our community

to demand best design practice, based on OVGA guidelines and smart planning principles.

We will not give up our fight for underpass WHEN is the ARTC going to stop procrastinating and just make the decision regarding the Inland Rail precinct in Euroa?

As reported in the Gazette of December 15, the people of Euroa have shown their overwhelming support for the underpass option with recent community feedback based on 334 survey responses plus numerous phone calls and emails, plus also the petition signed by 2277 people which was presented to Federal Parliament on June 2 this year by Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines.

The ARTC now says the next step is for their engineers and design teams to continue to work on both options for Euroa as part of their decision making process.

Why both options?

Why not just focus on the locally preferred option?

Is the ARTC just hoping that if they continue to delay, the local people will lose interest and they can then push through their own plans?

It’s not over ‘til fat lady sings, with rail precinct WHILE it’s great the ARTC have finally acknowledged the community’s preference for an underpass, we must not assume anything.

As they say in the classics, “it’s not over ‘til the fat lady sings”!

The ARTC should show respect to all those who have taken the time to share their views by acknowledging the number one reason locals prefer an underpass is for the visual connectivity.

The community has clearly stated its preferences.

We want better connections to the other side of the tracks and we want a rail precinct that shows real regard for the future growth of Euroa.

The ARTC must understand that - we will continue to lobby for the very best outcome - and we won’t stop until they start digging the underpass.

Euroa saleyards break records

Euroa saleyards are an incredibly important asset to our farming community and a huge contributor to the local economy, that is why in 2021/22 Strathbogie Shire Council invested more than $200,000 to this service.

Strathbogie Shire Council officials said they have worked hard to ensure our Euroa Saleyards facility has continued to operate during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They recognise the importance of this selling facility to the farming community and the region’s economy.

During the last financial year 13 sales were conducted in the 221-pen complex, with more than 18,500 head of cattle sold.

This is almost 2000 head of cattle more than the previous 12 months.

Locals call for action over reckless driving in the area

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL couple Jeff and Bronwyn Starkey have been facing dangerous road behaviour where they live, on Kirkland Avenue, Euroa, and decided to raise it with Strathbogie Shire Council.

They wrote a letter to council about changing the regulatory speed limit on Kirkland Avenue.

“We are in total support of this proposal, on safety and noise issues and believe it to be a matter of urgency,” they wrote in the letter.

Having lived on Kirkland Avenue directly opposite the entrance to the Euroa Caravan Park since 2017, Mrs and Mr Starkey say they have been greatly concerned at the volume and speed of traffic along this stretch of Kirkland Avenue and its possible impacts.

“We believe that many more vehicles use this road, as well as Atkins Street, than may otherwise be the case because motorists east of Clifton Street are wanting to avoid the traffic lights at the intersection of Clifton and Anderson streets, as well as the school zones,” the couple said.

“The extreme speed at which some travel along this zone is very concerning.

“The problem with this is that this large volume of traf-

Mrs and Mr Starkey said there were frequently large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists also using this entrance.

Many times they have witnessed young children on bicycles, scooters and skateboards playing on the bituminised area at the front of the caravan park, some who inadvertently veer out onto the roadway.

“We feel that a serious accident is inevitable at the current speed limit,” they said.

“Also we have often seen several caravans and trailers lined up along Kirkland Avenue, in both directions, waiting for their turn to enter the caravan park with its new boom gate arrangement.

“This often happens in peak holiday times and weekends.

“This impacts the viability of passing motorists in both directions having to pull out onto the roadway to pass, particularly given that vehicles are also entering and leaving Atkins Street directly opposite.

“Again, we have witnessed many near misses.

“A reduced speed limit can only reduce the possibility of a collision between vehicles and/or pedestrians.”

A HIGHLY successful fundraiser took place in Avenel last weekend with the star act being none other than musician Eddie Perfect.

He did not miss a beat as he entertained 200 plus people on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

The money raised will go to restoring and repairing the two heritage buildings at Avenel Jubilee Park.

Chairperson for the park Anne Douglas said they are

still finalising money but she estimates they have raised close to $10,000.

Be aware on water

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL WITH summer upon us, recreational boaters and fishers across Victoria are encouraged to brush up on safety rules and prepare their vessels to stay safe and avoid fines on the water.

Data reveals household chores and socialising to be the most common causes of breaks in active adult supervision.

On the back of Victoria’s worst childhood drowning toll in over 20 years, Kidsafe Victoria is urging parents and carers to actively supervise children around water in a bid to reduce the number of drowning deaths.

The call comes as thousands of families prepare to enjoy backyard barbecues and pool parties over the summer holidays.

Research into fatal toddler drowning incidents conducted by James Cook University and Royal Life Saving Australia found that household chores - everyday tasks such as checking on dinner, taking out the rubbish or putting the washing out - were the most common distractions which led to lapses in supervision of children around water (41 per cent).

This was followed by talking or socialising (11 per cent) and electronic distractions (9 per cent).

Swimmers are also encouraged to make sure they and their loved ones are safe in Australian waters, especially after a teenager was found drowned at Nagambie lake.

“We are blessed with beautiful places to swim and we encourage residents and visitors to enjoy these spaces and cool off, while also ensuring they are in a safe environment and are with others watching on.

“It is also important to remember sun safety and slip, slop and slap when you are out in the heat.

“Council’s swimming pools recently opened to the public and it is a fantastic time to cool off at these well-loved facilities, entry to all pools is free for Strathbogie Shire Council ratepayers - the annual pool pass can be found on the bottom of your rates notice.

“Council is also seeking feedback on proposed changes to the

waterways in Nagambie.

“Council is the waterway manager under the Marine Safety Act for the Goulburn River between Hughes Creek and the Goulburn Weir.

“This includes Lake Nagambie but excludes creeks and streams flowing into the river and storages.

“We want to ensure all waterway users feel comfortable and safe so we encourage people to have their say about the proposed rule changes via Share Strathbogie where you can complete our survey.”

VOLUNTEER organisations across Indi will share in $126,978 in federal grant funding.

One of the successful project is “Training in RSA, food handling and First Aid” for the Rotary Club of Euroa.

Richard Noble, president of the Rotary Club of Euroa, said the loan was applied for last April and was needed to train Rotarians in the responsible serving of alcohol, first aid and the proper handling of food.

“As you would be aware a Rotary Club is always visible in the community and the Rotary Club of Euroa is no exception in fact we are always active whether it be at our monthly market , supporting youth activities or just cooking sausages to raise funds,” Mr Noble said.

“So it is necessary that our members are trained in areas that that we operate in.

“The monies were gratefully received from the Federal Government under their Volunteer Grants Scheme and MP Helen Haines was most helpful in receiving our application and approving it for further consideration.

“It will help us tremendously in serving our local community as responsible individuals.”

Another successful project is “Tools to maintain the oval’ for the Euroa Friendlies Reserve committee.

These grants range from $1000 to $5000, and will assist organisations to better support their vol-

unteers to purchase small equipment, pay fuel, transport and training costs.

Successful organisations in Indi include the Baranduda 1st Scouts Club, the Kinglake District Cricket Club, the Merrijig Public Hall, Raise the Roof Benalla, the Tallangatta Rail Trail Advisory Group, the Wangaratta Rovers Football and Netball Club and the Ovens and Murray Special Olympics Australia club.

Dr Haines called each organisation to share the good news personally.

The successful applicants were recommended to the federal government for funding after being assessed by a panel of community leaders.

“The past two years have been difficult for many community organisations, facing the bushfires and then COVID-19 making it more difficult to undertake their activities,” Dr Haines said.

“But so many groups found a way to keep going, showing just how strong the community spirit is in Indi.”

Dr Haines said the grants would go a long way towards supporting volunteers to continue their important work in the community, in work that brings people together even after tough times.

“I travel all across Indi and every time I visit a sports club, a local hall, or a community group, I am greeted by a volunteer,” Dr Haines said.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our towns and I am proud to be able to support them through these grants.”

CFA crews to police planned burns

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL A MOBILE planned burn taskforce of more than 400 will be available to assist local brigades in managing fuel access in the North East if required.

Made up of CFA members from around the state, the task force will be deployed to support brigades who are unable to source enough firefighters to undertake planned burns during fire season, which began throughout District 23 on Monday.

According to project manager Terry Ouroumis, the task force had been conceptualised in 2016, before it was finally implemented this summer.

“The concept was to try and get a mobile workforce, specifically for planned burning, that is ready and available to help out with fire prevention activities and burning across the state,” he said.

“If the local area isn’t able to sufficiently resource volunteers for a burn that’s ready to go, then the task force is activated, and a request is sent out to help bolster personnel to a burn.

“We talked about having a group of members with enthusiasm and who wanted

The task force has been activated a number of time across the state already this year, attending a planned burn near Longwood, just south of Euroa.

While the task force is primarily utilised by CFA crews, other fire agencies were able to request its assistance when needed, according to Mr Ouroumis.

“Task force members could be requested for a single day, but they’re usually multi-day tours,” he said.

“We try to cap it at a maximum of four days though as our members are volunteers of course, and they’re leaving their homes to help with these very important bushfire mitigation activities.

“We can fill specific roles that are needed for specific burns, and we can also help volunteers gain valuable experience if that’s what they need.”

Crime stats show increase THE Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) released the Victorian recorded data for the year ending September 30.

For the Strathbogie Shire, total criminal incidents dropped by 1.1 per cent and the location where the most offences were recorded was Nagambie, followed by Euroa, Avenel, Violet Town and Miepoll.

The most common offence in Strathbogie Shire was breach family violence order, followed by theft, criminal damage, sexual offense and common assault.

The crimes were most perpetrated in house, then also in the street and service stations.

For Victoria as a whole, as part of the overall reduction, a number of key offences decreased, including burglaries which decreased by almost 5000 offences to their lowest levels in 10 years.

Robberies also recorded a 10-year low, while theft decreased by 14.5 per cent overall.

Drug related offending also experienced a significant reduction, with drug dealing/trafficking dropping by 16 per cent.

While decreases in these areas were positive, there were some offences of significant concern that increased, including breaches of orders which rose 3.1 per cent or other criminal offences that increased included stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour (up 10.6 per cent or 1385 offences), assault and related offences (up 2.1 per cent or 968 offences), and sexual offences (up 4 per cent or 572 offences).

Stalking, harassment, and threatening behaviour was largely driven by online offending as people spent more time in front of computers and other devices during lockdowns.

An increase in assaults was also tied to family violence offending with more than half of all assaults being family violence related (50.7 per cent), while the rise in sexual offences was most heavily driven by an increase in sexual offences against children.

Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Rick Nugent said “it is really pleasing to see the overall reduction in crime over the past year”.

“While we know that COVID-19 restrictions have contributed to the decrease, the result remains a positive outcome for the Victorian community,” Deputy Commissioner Nugent said.

“As we move into the festive season and head into the new year, every Victoria Police officer will be doing everything in their power to keep the crime rate low and community safe.

“This will be achieved through a number of ongoing state-wide and local operations to detect and deter crime before it can occur monitor known persons of interest before they offend, and bring those who commit crimes before the courts.

“Over the coming month, we’ll have police out in great numbers across our beaches monitoring criminal and anti-social behaviour as part of Operation Summersafe.

“There is absolutely no doubt the Victorian community deserves to celebrate the end of an incredibly challenging year for us all and our members will be there right alongside you to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves safely.”

Crimes against the person offences increased in the last 12 months, up 2.2 per cent to 84,756, with the main contributor’s nonfamily violence (FV) related Common assault and Serious assault.

Despite the overall decrease in offences, FV-related offences increased 4.3 per cent to 112,062 offences.

Half of all FV-related offences were E20 Breach of order offences (up 7.6 per cent or 3,992 to 56,280 offences).

In the 12 months to September 30 the criminal incident rate decreased 13 per cent to 5358.1 per 100,000 Victorians as did the number of incidents, down 13.2 per cent to 357,847 incidents.

2021 CAPITAL OF CHRISTMAS: Strasbourg is famous for its Christmas Market under its majestic Cathedral.

MAJESTIC: At that time of the year, the Champs-Elysées are shining bright with Christmas lights and the Arc de Triomphe stands tall at the end.

My first Christmas during summer AS a French citizen, all my Chistmases were pretty similar to yours, apart for a very different weather, as at this period snow is usually covering our houses and our streets with a thick coat of snow and day light saving allows us to see the sun from 9am until 5pm.

So this is my very first holiday season during summer, and at first my brain was not registering at all, as I always have been conditioned to very low temperatures for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. I was born in the city of Strasbourg, one hour up north to Paris, and I grew up there before moving as a teenager to my second home, my beloved Paris.

Strasbourg is the capital of the European Union but most importantly, it’s also the capital of Christmas, as the Christmas market is actually the most visited in the world.

Tourists from all over the globe come to Strasbourg to admire the Christmas lights and the magical Cathedral covered in snow at that time of the year.

People gather around in very thick coats to share a hot wine and waffles while wandering in the streets of this gorgeous and very medieval city, where building haven’t changed in four centuries.

All my Christmases in Paris were similar to the magical ones of Strasbourg, with snow falling lightly on our Eiffel tower, or Haussmann buildings, our long boulevards and our stunning bridges, with little Christmas markets all over the city.

Gorgeous lighting arrangements make our architecture pop at that time of

the year, as you can imagine, Paris is even more beautiful when it shimmers with Christmas lights.

I highly recommend to anyone to go on the ChampsElysées at that period as the lights and the market make it an unforgettable experience.

As in Australia, we like to reunite with our loved ones at that season and have delicious and very lengthy Christmas lunches.

The “Reveillon”, our dinner the day before Christmas day, is a religion for us, and this is the occasion to catch up with family members you haven’t seen in a while, while dining of poultry, seafood delicacies, piglets and delicious season veggies, while drinking too many bottles of Champagne (way more that I care to admit).

The scenery usually is composed of a roaring fireplace and a beautiful Norwegian pine tree decorated

with shimmering angels and other decorations; my father’s generation used to put real candles in the Christmas trees, which would absolutely be a disaster if tried in Australia.

The next day, Christmas, is usually dedicated to enjoying all the presents that were exchanged between loved ones, and sometimes it’s also a day dedicated to digesting the feast that was eaten the day before.

I’m thrilled to celebrate Christmas for the first time in a light summery dress, by the pool, while enjoying delicious foods and trying my first Christmas crackers (we have no such things in France).

I’ll make sure I cover myself with sunscreen and mosquito repellent while

waiting for Santa to come and share a barbecue and other summery foods this year, and I’ll be missing my family in France, wishing

This year, Henry would love to get a drone, a Nintendo Switch game, some books and a Mosasaurus dinosaur In his letter, Henry said to Santa how much he loved him.

“Dear Santa, you make me so happy with all your love and presents,” Henry said in his letter.

“We love you so much.

“Love from Henry and Mum and Dad and Max wants a dog toy.

“Love you, bye.”

Riley Boyd, aged 6, wants his gifts to enable him to go fishing with his dad.

“I am hoping Santa will bring me some fishing rods so I can go fishing with dad in the boat,” he said.

Millie Boyd, aged 8, is looking forward getting nice presents too.

“For Christmas I’m hoping Santa will bring me some slime, a Nintendo lite and a spirit game for it. I looking forward to spending time with my family,” she said.

DEAR Santa, I am a 22 year old pony.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with laminitis.

That means my feet ache all the time and I’m on a very strict diet.

I’m so very hungry, I’m hungry all the time! I love big juicy carrots and muesli bars.

They are my favourite snack in the whole world.

They are sticky and sweet and I can never have enough.

I’ve been such a good pony this year and I work so very hard for my humans. I live with all these big bossy thoroughbred horses and they just eat so much!

There are two boys, Finn and Macey Moo, they are really silly and always getting up to no good, and two girls, Limpy Ginnie and the famous Neena Valentina.

She got to go to a Christmas Dressage show (I was very jealous that I didn’t get to go with her and share her carrots.)

Right now I’m in a paddock next to two calves, Bleu and Pynk, that are both being bottle raised and they eat carrots too!

What I would like for Christmas most of all is for them to bring me a giant bag of carrots and a big box of muesli bars so I can have some every day and share it with all my friends here on the farm.

Good progression with Nagambie’s building projects

By DIANE GRANT STAGE two of the Shepparton Railway Line upgrade is progressing well.

Site mobilisation works started in Nagambie in November to support construction of the platform extension at the station to suit longer VLocity trains.

The Shepparton line upgrade is part of the $4 billion Regional Rail Revival Program.

The line passes through Nagambie and regular travellers have been using bus services while the line and railway crossing works have been carried out in the past few months.

The Nagambie railway station platform upgrade has created major earthmoving works to be carried out at the southern end of the current railway platform.

Concrete stabilising retaining blocks have been placed along the new platform edge to provide permanent new walls for the new platform area.

Tonnes of earth have been moved into place to ballast them and to create a new and wider flat platform in the new area.

Stage Two of the line upgrade is delivering the infrastructure required to enable the modern

Site investigations have also taken place along the line to design the stage three track and signalling upgrades, which will enable nine week day return services to Shepparton and deliver faster journeys.

Stage two is targeted to be completed by late 2022 and stage three in late 2023.

Now on another major building works progress.

The Waterways Lifestyle Village for over 55’s being built for over 16 months at the northern

end of town is progressing well.

Underground services, roadways and paths, street lighting, sewerage, water, electricity, and other necessities have been done and over 20 small units have been erected so far, with a community hall in progress alongside them.

Locals are still watching with interest this new Project that is preparing to cater for many older Aussies that might like a tree change in their later years.

This is another new project entrepreneur Gerry Ryan OAM, has undertaken. He believes

that the region needs affordable housing.

Another project that is running side by side is the building of a the factory in town near the industrial state area that will employ close to 50 staff to construct manufactured homes near the Lifestyle Village.

Work began on this factory recently and the finishing touches to the outside walls, roofing and entrances and concrete driveways looks nearly complete.

Waterways Lifestyle will form part of Waterways Residential Estate incorporating over 250 lots of various land sizes, giving you the opportunity to build a home you always dreamt of owning.

The housing estate opposite the football ground in Vickers Road is also undergoing many changes with the new houses rising up each week and new streets being formed.

The Murray Street extension is also seeing some housing development there, and two new shops are under construction next to the Bumble Bees shop in High Street.

The Northern end of town has steadily been growing with new houses as well between the McGregor Avenue and Racecourse Road vicinities.

“Spirit Matters” CONSIDER THE STARS. As the year closes this Advent season, so much has changed. We live with greater uncertainty because of the pandemic, yet it has always been so. A greater awareness exists of lifes’ brevity and fragility. However, there is Certainty_ that we can anchor ourselves to, as found in the life and love of the Lord Jesus Christ. He alone wears the Crown that will ever matter. Before His birth, over 300 prophecies concerning His birth were fulfilled. “I am the Word that became flesh.” (John 1:14) Don’t lose sight of Jesus divinity but remember that the Word that brought the Holy Child into the world, is the same, that brought the world into existence!

No gift or joy compares with the treasure we can have in Him, (Matt.6: 19-21) who came to tell us, “Truth shall set you free” (John 8:31-32).

With Him, you have everything you need for this life and the next. Jesus, Gods’ beloved Son, paid the unspeakable price to secure everlasting life for you. His blessed assurance is more constant than the rising sun; which was created only on Day 4, along with moon and stars, for ‘signs, wonders, seasons & for separating night from day’. (Gen 1:14-16). God created Light on Day 1 and rhetorically asks in Job:38. “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades or loose the belt of Orion.. guide the Great Bear with its’ cubs? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?”

Christmas often brings more tension than peace. Deep down, we know, life on earth should be better. Within us, there are silent cries for eternity and peace, (Eccles. 3:11), for erasing inner emptiness and for being rid of human evil and sadness. And these things are prophesied still to come, “when Justice will roll down as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream”. (Amos 5:24) The spirit-born Christian becomes unburdened (Matt 11: 28-30) because Jesus has done the hardest part. Our task is but to receive His precious gift with praise and thankfulness. Instead, year after year, people keep saying ‘no thanks, I’ll do it my way’. (Is 53:6, Ps 81:12, Jer. 18:12) Jesus was born_to die, to save us, while we were still sinners. (Rom. 5:8, Rom.6:23) Christmas is more than tinsel and trappings, When Jesus isn’t honoured, carols ring hollow, smiles lie on the surface. Candles and lights don’t do justice to His shining Light, (Psalm 104:2) which came to earth beneath the spectacular Star over Bethlehem. This dazzling star was one of those ‘wonder-signs’ that God has spoken through; the conjunction of Venus(woman), Jupiter (king) and Regulus (ruler).

Jesus says “Come to Me_ I am the bright Morning Star”. (Rev. 22:16-17). Without God humanity has big problems but with a great God, every problem is brought low. Search for Him while you can_ be as humble sheep and wisely seek the Good Shepherd, (1 Peter 2:25) and may you, the reader_ experience the Lords’ favour and blessing as you do.

MEMORABLE PHOTO TIMES: Before 2000 I took official prep photos of Avenel, Nagambie, Seymour and Puckapunyal schools at the start of each year for the papers. Then I would also take school captains or leaders, and large group grade six graduation and some high school year 12 graduations photos and individual students and families for their special day memories to keep in their family albums.

Since 2000 I also photographed Santa pics at Christmas times, and weddings and many debutantes and partners in large official groups and individual family memento packs up until 2016.

This photographic run I was able to practise under my Diane’s Photography small business right up until a year or so ago.

I still dabble, but now only large groups of school preps, captains and graduation pics.

No more important rites of passage pics. Because so many folk have mobile phones and are taking selfies, ones of mates, and casual pics.

At least I had the honour of taking the grade six class photo of the two schools here again this year.

I wonder if they will print them off to place in their memory albums of photo frames? Oh well, that’s the sign of the times.

Nagambie class of 2021 DESPITE effects of COVID-19 over the past two years, Nagambie Primary School held its 2021 Grade Six Graduation dinner and awards ceremony on at the school’s assembly multi-purpose room last week.

The room has been decorated for the special evening and the school children and guests enjoyed a meal prepared for their graduation dinner by Joe Gattuso of Nagambie.

Following the meal and photo presentation of the students’ years at school, principal Rob French and grade six teacher James Bodycoat thanked the students, families, teaching and other staff members, the school Parents and Friends association, volunteers and local organisations for an excellent year and for supporting the Grade six students throughout their primary school years.

Once again the awards ceremony held everyone’s interest.

They were conducted in front of the grade six students, families, staff and representives of various organisations sponsoring the annual wards.

The dux of the school final award for academic excellence went to two students and was

WHAT looked like a quiet GREAT TIME: end of an era for the grade Grade sixers six students of Euroa Pri- had a grand mary School, turned-out be send off an exciting and memorable from Euroa event.

Jeffery couldn’t let the year end on a quiet note and wanted something special for her fellow students, so she hosted an event to celebrate their graduation from primary school.

The free event kicked-off mid afternoon and went through to late in the evening with wood fired pizza, laser lights, UV glow paints, a 20 m swing, water fights, lots of sugary foods and loud music. The only thing that could be heard over the music was lots of laughter.

The highlight for the kids was the surprise visit from Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks.

There was a moment of silence as Laura approached the children with some pointing and saying, ‘It’s the Mayor.’

For many of the grade sixers, it was their first mini brush with fame.

One even asked if she was the Queen on Violet Town.

Mayor Binks stayed and mingled with the children for a good part of the night and had lots of laughs and jokes.

She certainly held their attention while sitting, eating pizza and drinking fruit punch.

Many of the adults wanted a chat with the mayor but it was clear that she was there for the kids, who were so impressed that some even asked her for a hug and a photo.

Of course, the mayor was more than obliging.

Congratulations to all grade six children and we wish them all the best with their secondary schooling.

The school thanked Cr Binks who left a positive impression on the children.

Young author raises awareness on environmental issues A tale of saving g our p planet and our oceans

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL YOUNG women are trying to make a change for the better and for our planet everywhere around the world, and Euroa is no exception, as local Euroa Secondary College student Rachael Buerckner just proved it by releasing her first illustrated book, “Evo on Earth.”

Ms Buerckner is in year 9 and decided to write her book as a school project but also because the cause was close to her heart, as it was about raising awareness about our planet and how to protect it.

Some 30 editions were printed and some were sold at the last Euroa Farmers’ Market.

The book was realised during lockdown and its drawings are in watercolour, also all proceeds raised with the sale of her book is going to Planet Ark. Established in 1992, Planet Ark is one of Australia’s most respected and trusted environmental organisations, as they are focused on solutions and making positive environmental actions accessible to everyone.

“The story of my book is about Evo, an alien who comes on Earth,” Ms Buerckner said.

“She talks to the Sun, and asks him why he looks so sad, to which he replies it is because of humans burning fossil fuel.

“So Evo uses her magic to fix this issue.

“But when it comes to the ocean, she can’t take the rubbish out of it, and she’s running around trying to find people to help her do that.”

The young author said her book was for younger generations.

“We really need to start thinking about the future and how we can stop hurting everything, that’s my message to the older generations,” she said.

Avenel gets in festive spirit AVENEL rocked on the weekend earlier this month with continuous music across local businesses as part of the Roaming Rhythms festival.

Musical Melodies, classics and 1950s-60s rock were sung by local musicians who have missed out on earnings due to the challenges of COVID. People welcomed the free entertainment which was gratefully funded by Strathbogie Shire said organisers. Anne and Nadine.

Avenel was definitely the place to be.

SANTA FUN: The Avenel Twilight market was a huge success with over 2500 people attending over the course of the evening. Some 60 stalls including food vans, local wines, beer and cider and new and regular stallholders set up in the Avenel Jubilee Park grounds recently. Committee member Anne Douglas commented on how wonderful it was to see so many people out and about enjoying the market. There was free face painting was provided for the children and of course Santa came by for a visit.

The next market will be held on the Sunday, February 2.

Avenel bowlers see out the season MIDWEEK PENNANT REWARD for effort for the Avenel division five team in round six of GMBR midweek pennant.

With one winning rink and one drawn rink, the 1347 win against Seymour 1-43 was the teams’ first win of the season and enough to lift them up from the bottom of the ladder.

Graham Lewis, Joyce White, Glen Bell, George Pedler (s) gained the lead on the sixth end with a six.

Seymour came within one shot on end 21, but Avenel were determined to bring this one home and won the last four ends 5 - 2 and the game 26 - 22.

Marion Gittus, Nyoli Bell, Bill O’Connor, Graeme Toy (s) won 9 of the first 14 ends to go into the break 17 - 6 up.

In the second session, Seymour chipped away to draw even with Avenel by end 23.

The deadlock was unable to be broken with Avenel scoring a two on the second last end and Seymour scoring a two on the last end, game drawn on 21 apiece.

Next week in round seven Avenel play away against Rushworth.

Division two had an away game against Stanhope.

The home team with two winning rinks, won 14 - 67 to Avenel 2 - 65.

Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) had a day out winning 20 ends.

At lunch they were up 15 shots and continued in blistering form to win the second session 16 - 3 and the game 36 - 8.

Pam Pedder, Fay Hateley, Rob Kemp, Noel Slater (s) were able to get in the head and keep Stanhopes’ winning ends to three or under but found the going tough to win ends themselves losing

14 - 27.

Rusty Schwab, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy, Spud Furletti (s) after a close tussle all day were within three on the nineteenth end.

Stanhope then hit the accelerator and won the last six ends and the match 32 15.

The last round for this year for division two is away against Euroa.

WEEKEND PENNANT Division three travelled to Tallygaroopna and played the locals on the hottest day of the season so far.

Tallygaroopna managed the blustery conditions much better than Avenel winning overall 16 - 133 to 2 - 81.

Donna Rowley, Jenny Furletti, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) were in a close game until they scored a five an end 13 to give them a seven-shot lead.

From there they won nine

of the twelve remaining ends with accurate consistent bowling to win the game 36 - 14.

Rusty Schwab, Kate Donovan, Pam Pedder, Brett McDonald (s) fought hard to wrestle the lead from the Tallygaroopna lads to go into the break six shots up. However, losing the last six ends saw Tallygaroopna overtake Avenel on end 24 and win by two shots 23 - 25.

Fay Hateley, Jake Wall, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) although behind, were in touch with Tallygaroopna till the break.

After lunch the locals powered ahead winning seven ends for a comfortable win 35 -21.

Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Grace Kenworthy, Spud Furletti (s) may have lost their game, but they never lost their fighting spirit or sense of humour.

sion three is at home against East Shepparton on Saturday 15 January 2022.

Alexandra 2 forfeited to Avenel in division six south.

When bowls resumes in the new year, Avenel will travel to Yea on Saturday January 15 for their round eight match.

Last Saturday evening the club held it’s Christmas Party and the clubhouse was rocking with a full complement of members and their families and friends enjoying a wonderful night of good food and festive fun.

Thank you to the members that contributed dishes to the main course and dessert, the quality of the food was outstanding and plentiful.

Cricketers crack in the hot weather

By JYE BJORKSTEN Euroa 90 def by Kyabram 5/93 IT was a very hot day for cricket in Euroa, Euroa won the toss and elected to bat.

They got off to a very shaky start early loosing 2 quick wickets.

After 5 overs the score was 2-0, Kyabram had the upper hand early.

The team welcomed back Jack Frewen this week and it was great to have him back playing.

Paul Anderson came to the crease with the Euroa side in trouble and batted beautifully for his 35 not out.

Paul and Lachie Cooke’s partnership towards the back end of innings got Euroa to a somewhat defendable target of 90.

Kyabram started off their innings strongly before Connor McCombe entered the attack and took 3 quick wickets and gave Euroa a bit of hope.

Lucas Paul and Rodney Jones bowled great spin at each end but unfortunately Euroa didn’t have enough runs on the board and Kyabram won convincingly by 5 wickets.

There will now be a few weeks off cricket over Christmas and then back into it on Saturday, January 8 at Nurmurkah.

Tumultuous hockey season comes to an end WHILE the 2021 hockey season was again COVID interrupted there were some real successes and enthusiastic participation across the Euroa Hockey Club and a lot more hockey played than last year.

With the reopening of the Euroa Friendlies Oval at the start of the year, the club had a wonderful space and very smooth surface to run Tuesday night skills training and small game sessions for a local and enthusiastic group of juniors as well as for training teams entered in the weekly GVHA Winter Competitions.

With most juniors and their families choosing to play locally Euroa had no junior teams in the weekly GVHA Winter Junior Competitions in 2021 but fielded very enthusiastic and competitive teams in the GVHA Under 10 Round Robins and special Under 14 matches that were offered a number of times throughout the season.

Without a junior Euroa side Joel and Aidan Hamill were still able to compete in the full GVHA winter competition as members of the GVGS Under 14 and 12 teams respectively.

Euroa was able to enter a B women’s side made up of a wonderful mix of predominantly young girls through to “super Vets”.

This team made remarkable progress through the season earning the admiration of many spectators and other teams along the way.

Unfortunately, two COVID lockdowns saw the planned 15 round season shortened to 9 however it was agreed that this was enough to award Ladder Leader and Best and Fairest Awards for the 2021 winter season.

When awards were announced Joel Hamill had taken out the GVHA under 14 best and fairest award from a very strong and deep field.

Young Aidan Hamill, still under 10 in 2022 but playing under 12 in 2021 came third in the GVHA under 12 best and fairest which is also impressive.

Joel then went on to represent the North East Knights at the Victorian Junior State Championships in Shepparton and was selected as a member of the Hockey Victoria Under 13 Academy from which the Victorian Under 13 Team would normally be selected, but COVID put paid to this with no National Under 13 Championship in 2021.

GVHA were able to offer and run a full 6 week summer hockey half field competition, which finished last Monday.

Euroa’s Juniors jumped at the opportunity and so teams were entered in both the Under 12 and Under 15 Mixed competitions.

From time-to-time Euroa also stood in for missing teams or provided players for other teams short in numbers.

Some excellent individual and team skills were witnessed over this season and a lot of fun had by all.

While the 2021 year has come to an end and a welldeserved break starts, the club will soon be looking to 2022.

Junior hockey will again be offered locally and if enough interest is shown teams will also be entered in the GVHA Competition.

Numbers are looking

good for at least one, perhaps two, women’s teams and the club would also welcome interest in a men’s team.

Participants of all ages and abilities are always welcome whether beginner through to experienced.

THE weather gods smiled last Sunday with almost perfect conditions for shooting.

A sunny day with a slight northerly breeze greeted the competitors from near and far.

The Christmas shoot is a bit of a novelty event with people competing for chickens, turkeys, hams and hampers.

However, the competition and banter are always furious on the day with bragging rights up for grabs.

There were a band of regulars with a couple of new faces and some old ones that hadn’t been seen for a while.

The first event was tower with 15t P/S. Commonly referred to as the chook shoot.

It was fairly evident most competitors had not been shooting many tower events in recent times with a fair percentage of unbroken clays on the ground.

The final results were: AA 1st Geoff McClure 44/45, 2nd Fred Heinze 41/45 A 1st Craig Asquith 41/45, 2nd Scott Towers 34/45 B 1st Paul McKendrick 35/45, 2nd Laurie Fitzpatrick 34/45 C 1st Thomas McGrath 37/4, 2nd Gavin Crosbie 33/45 The second event was a 25t D/B, shooting for hams.

The final results were: AA 1st Fred Heinze 25/25, 2nd Geoff McClure 23/25 A 1st Scott Towers 36/36, 2nd Charles Caldwell 35/36 B 1st Keith Brown 21/25, 2nd Thomas McGrath 19/25 C 1st Ian Larner 25/25, 2nd Paul Ferrari 23/25 The third event was 20Pr Deauville Doubles, turkey shoot.

This is a two-shooter team event with two targets thrown

simultaneously, both targets must be hit to score.

Some of the teams had been shooting together for many years with fortunes ebbing and flowing over the years.

Whoever won this event won the main prize, however, the turkeys are always accepted by the winners.

The final result were: After an extend shoot off (1 pair of targets) 1st Anthony Rohrlach & Robert Barnes 19/21, 2nd Geoff McClure & Craig Asquith 18/21 The fourth event was a 20t Handicap.

Shooting for some very well stocked hampers.

This event was shot over varying distances with “C” graders shooting at 15m and “AA” shooting out to 25m in some cases.

The extra distance depending on grade is very much an equalizer for all.

At the end of the event Scott Towers “A” grade and Chris Peterson “C” grade were tied for first place.

After a short shoot off Chris emerged the victor taking 1st with Scott 2nd.

The final results: 1st Chris Peterson 31/34, 2nd Scott Towers 30/34, 3rd Thomas McGrath 22/25, back marker Geoff McClure 19/23 Everyone enjoyed themselves with excellent conditions and friendly rivalry throughout the day.

The first shoot for next year will be held on the Sunday, January 9 starting at 11.00am.

The home team won the toss and had no hesitation in sending Euroa in to bat first

on a lively pitch.

The opening pair of Walter Jackson (11* retired) and Nathan Butler (4) had to defend against some sharp bowling from the Old Students.

They withstood the pressure and were able to guide Euroa through the early overs, rotating the strike and ticking the scoreboard over.

Spin was introduced to the attack, slowing the run rate

and frustrating Coen Paul as he made his way to 12* retired.

Ryan Hill (19) lifted the run rate with some well executed drives and a flurry at the end of the innings from Kusuma Wolfenden (6) and Blake Hepworth (6*) had Euroa finish their 20 overs on 7/84.

As with previous weeks, the boys needed to be tight

with their bowling and sharp in the field from ball one and, as with previous weeks, the boys delivered.

It looked to be smooth sailing for the all-conquering team, however 23 runs off the next two overs had Old Students in the game and Euroa’s unbeaten record looking wobbly.

Enter Max Miller (2/2), two wickets with his first three balls and Euroa were well and truly back in the box seat.

When Jay Huggins (1/20) broke through for his first wicket in the U16 competition, the confidence continued to grow.

The boys kept up the pressure and were able to take regular wickets to bowl Old

Students out.

Cohen Paul (3/2) showed his class to close out the innings, with Old Students all out for 67.

Euroa go into the Christmas break undefeated and on top of the ladder.

It’s been a great start to the year, the boys have played as a tight unit and are looking forward to continuing their form into the new year.

Bowlers hoping to bring in new year strongly

Division four were away at Shepparton Park and their loss was 59/139, and division six north match at Kyabram was abandoned because of the high heat.

Over the holidays the Euroa Club will be holding their Christmas tournament with mens pairs 2x4x2 on Tuesday, December 28 at 1.00pm.

The club Christmas party was held on Saturday, December 19 with a good representation of bowlers, partners and friends enjoying a barbecue and salads followed by sweets.

President Neville Harris welcomed everyone to the evening and thanked everyone for providing the delicious food, and hoped all would have a pleasant night.

Bill Sargood thanked Neville for his leadership over the year and then read a poem about bowling.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE Christmas Dog Show at the Euroa Farmer’s Market last Saturday, December 18 certainly brought lots of smiles to many faces, young and old.

Under an unforgiving summer sun locals gathered with enthusiasm to show off their four legged friends.

Big dogs, little dogs, working dogs all got together and entertained their owners and provided a fun and happy atmosphere in the show-ring, competing in numerous categories including “waggiest tail”, “fab fella”, or even “lovely lady”.

The committee would like to sincerely thank members of Euroa community for their participation and support of the event along with weekend visitors who entered on the spot just for fun.

A big shout out to the local team of dedicated dog lovers who banned together to organise the Dog Show and bring it to the community on Market Day. Special thanks to judge Freya Worne from Central Vets and her able assistants Kirsty Houston and Pip Murray for making the call out of winners for each class and activity throughout the morning.

Tatura: 4-139 - Cohen Paul 2/16, Sham Dadallage 1/24, Jake Smith 1/16 Defeated Euroa 6-123 - Andrew Squires 57, Fraser Ellis 24* A GRADE hosted Tatura at Euroa Friendly’s Society Recreation Reserve the pitch was green and quite soft, the outfield was nice and fast, it was the perfect weather for cricket.

Euroa won the toss and choose to bowl.

Fraser Ellis opened the bowling, with some good heat, bowling well without reward. Fletcher Paul took the ball for the second over bowling good lines and lengths.

Sham Dadallage and Carl Norton took the ball in the middle overs to try get a breakthrough, Sham got an early breakthrough to bring the new batsmen in, the captain looked for an answer to slow down the run rate giving the ball to Cohen Paul who took 2 big wickets.

Euroa went out to bat with a very chaseable total, the openers battled hard early with Andrew Squires getting away to a flyer with a quick 57, Euroa’s top ordered collapsed bring in Fraser and Ryan to close out the game Ryan tried his hardest with a quick 12, but in the end the boys fell short giving Tatura the victory.

Notable performances: Jake Smith bowled well bowling 3 overs with figures of 1/16 and Ryan Hill bowled 1 over towards the end in a tough time to bowl only going for 6 off his over.

Euroa played a decent game of cricket but just fell short of the total, it was a good performance from Tatura with the bat and ball, giving themselves the win.

There will be a break from cricket over the Christmas holidays but the boys in the A grade T20s will be back in action on Thursday, January 20 for a T20 game against Old Students at Euroa Memorial Oval at 5.30pm.

EUROA A GRADE CRICKET

By COHEN PAUL Kyabram: 7-305 - Sham Dadallage 2/47, Carl Norton 2/52, Cohen Paul 2/60 Defeated Euroa: 8-129 - Andrew Squires 31, Carl Norton 21*, Cohen Paul 21* A GRADE travelled to Kyabram at Kyabram Recreation Reserve in 40-degree heat with a strong hot wind all day, the pitch was a good batting wicket with it being hard and flat, the outfield was also green and fast.

Kyabram won the toss and elected to bat on a very good batting wicket, which ended in a good result for them.

Fraser Ellis opened the attack bowling with the wind bowling good lines and lengths while Darby Wilson did the hard yards bowling into the wind, bowling a tight line and length at the

other end, but a good batting performance from the Kyabram openers got them off to a cracker start.

After a couple overs bowled without a breakthrough the captain looked for an answer giving the ball to Cohen Paul who got a wicket in his first couple overs, Carl Norton took the ball from the other end trying his hardest to get his team back in the game.

Sham Dadallage bowled well getting some crucial wickets in the middle overs, Kyabram ended with a massive score of 307.

Euroa went out to bat with a big task at hand, Josh Robertson opened the batting with Andrew Squires, they both looked to score from ball one with some positive shots early, a few wickets fell at a difficult time to bat.

Jake Smith came in at six trying to steady the ship he worked hard which went unrewarded, Carl Norton came to the crease with about 20 overs left and just looked to stick it out.

Cohen joined Carl at the crease, and they were determined to make sure their team wasn’t bowled out, eventually building a late partnership of 42 but it was nowhere near enough to get Euroa over the line resulting in only 129 runs from their 45 overs.

Notable performances Fletcher Paul bowled well bowling six overs with figures of 1/28 and Josh Robertson batted well with an early score of 16.

Euroa tried hard all day but didn’t deserve to come away with the win, with a wayward bowling performance brought the chance for Kyabram to take the win, which they grabbed with both hands.

There will be a break from cricket over the Christmas holidays but the boys in the A grade will be back in action on the Saturday, January 8 for a one day game against Numurkah at Euroa Friendly Society Recreation Reserve at 12.30pm.

EUROA C GRADE

By JACK WILSON Euroa 7-76 (H Jackson 44, J Brodie 7) def by. Murchison 9/152 (W Jackson 2-30 K Wolfenden 2-37) EUROA C Grade side took on Murchison at Violet Town recreational reserve last Thursday night hoping to make amends from the team’s tough loss to Undera the previous week.

Captain Dion Grant lost the toss, and the team was sent to field in good conditions for cricket.

Henry Jackson opened the bowling for Euroa and broke through in the third over of the match clean bowled to send Murchison’s opening batsman back to the pavilion for a duck.

Walter Jackson also broke through for Euroa the very next over to remove the other opener with Henry Jackson taking a great catch.

Murchison started to build a partnership until Grayson Kirk took a wicket with the

Jack Wilson was bought into the attack and immediately turned the game on its head with a run out on the 2nd ball then took a wicket on his fourth ball of his first over.

Rahis Baig executed a brilliant run out two overs later by sprinting down the wicket to run out the non-striker.

A 40-run partnership for the 7th wicket was ended by the bowling of Wolfenden clean bowling the batsman.

Wolfenden got another wicket with the batsman chipping the ball to short fine leg where Wilson took an easy catch.

Not to be outdone Paul Anderson took a diving catch off the bowling of W. Jackson to get his second for the match.

Murchison saw out the last two balls to set a total of 9/152 off their 20 overs.

With the total of 153 to chase, Euroa got the run chase off to a start no one saw coming by losing 3-2 in the first two overs.

Henry came in and started to get the team going towards the target but ran out of time to get the team the win with Jackson getting out for 44.

Euroa looks to bounce back against Invergordon after Christmas in a one-day game.

THE as-yet undefeated under 14’s B Grade faced off against Mooroopna for the first time on Saturday morning, their first game in Round one having been cancelled due to rain.

With Euroa hosting at the Memorial Oval, Mooroopna won the toss and chose to bat, the skies cloudy and cool, showing no hint of the heat yet to come.

Ollie and Archie Wilson opened the bowling, with Ollie taking the first wicket together with a catch from Jack Walters at one for eight.

Ollie Robbo took the next, with a catch from Declan Antonis, two for 27.

Josh Mulder displayed some skills bowling three for 43 and then four for 44.

Angus Burton bowling and a catch from Ollie Robbo took the 5th for 62, then it was Will Davey’s turn to bowl the sixth for 63.

Minutes later Will also caught the 7th out, off a bowl from Haimi Wolfenden.

The Wilson brothers closed the fielding efforts with Ollie bowling the 8th for 74 together with a catch from big brother Archie.

At the end of 25 overs, Euroa were left chasing a score of 76.

Feeling pretty confident, the Under 14’s went into bat with Archie and Leo leading the way. Unfortunately, Leo was our first to fall, getting bowled early after the pair made only four runs.

Will wasn’t far behind him, caught out after making just one run at 2-10.

Ethan Saxon got 14 runs in before being retired after facing his 20 balls, with Cale Robertson and Ollie Wilson each making seven before retiring, not out.

Dec was the next to fall to Mooroopna, caught out at 3-44 before he could contribute to the score. Jack Walters made an admirable 12 and retired not out, meanwhile Josh and Ollie R both came and went, being stumped (4-49) and caught (5-50) respectively without either managing a run.

Things were looking a little tight with just five overs left and Euroa trailing by 26 runs.

Angus revived their spirits somewhat, making a solid seven with his brand-new bat, however Archies second turn at bat only saw him bowled at six for 66.

Cale came back in and gave us five more before he was caught at seven for 71.

Things were heating up and not just the temperature!

Captain Ethan stepped back in and got us over the line with another seven before the balls ran out, leaving the Euroa Under 14’s with a win margin of just four runs.

Many thanks to the Mooroopna Under 14’s team for teaching our kids several important lessons on Saturday.

The next round- Round 8 for the Under 14’s begins after our Christmas break at 8.15am on Saturday, January 15 at the Friendlies Oval where Euroa will host Nagambie.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB STORMY weather kept many away on Sunday with the brave souls game enough to battle the elements having play suspended for 30 minutes due to dangerous lightning strike activity surrounding the course.

Stableford was the day’s event and with the resumption of play Shaun Bryant was the golfer dealing with the situation best, submitting a handicap equalling 36 points to beat a bunchedup field with four players returning 35 points.

Of the 35 points getters Gary Bow finished runner up and David Love taking third.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Jeremy Ezard on the 3rd and 13th with two Lightning rod strikes, Daniel Hall reaching the 8th with a thunderbolt of his own and Phil Neville lucky to hold onto the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be a Boxing Day event with a Par round being played, office duty is B. Cryer and in the bat J. Mills.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

The winner with 37 stableford points was Kerry Hewlett, Mick Bolton got a lineball (35 points), Greg Roberts keeps getting lucky as he got nearest the pin on the 8th and 17th.

The club retained the balls on the other par threes.

On Saturday, December 19 there were quite a few visitors from Yea Golf Club playing stableford for the last Saturday comp for the year.

Conditions we perfect, warm and breezy, at one stage of the afternoon it was threatening but the storm went around.

The winner with 45 stableford points was Alan Pell from Yea Golf Club, ladies winner was Ria Pearce, lineballs were won by Brendon Chenhall (39 points), Gary Hewett (37 points), John Moore (36 points) and Gale Rafferty (35 points on a countback).

Division five played at Colbinabbin and only going down by three shots.

Division four south travelled to Eildon, this being their first trip there since the region altered.

Their surrounds are set in a lovely area surrounded by the Cathedral Mountains and their clubroom is raised about four feet from the ground, allowing spectators to sit on the veranda and look down on the bowling green to watch every bowl being bowled without players standing in front, blocking the view.

Stormy skies threaten tennis success

By MARK BORTHWICK EVERY team in the association headed to Benalla Lawn for the Christmas break up round, hosted by president Mark “Macca” McDonald and his great team.

The officials downgraded the sets to 6 in light of the expected heat.

In Division 1 the match of the round was between two Euroa teams in Gooram (placed 2nd) and Moglonemby (placed 7th).

Kodikara winning 6-2.

The afternoon was going set to set with hail and heavy rain interrupting play but with Moglonemby five games down and even on sets it all came down to the final mixed with Keighan Hicks and Marlene Hanrahan sweeping home 6-1 evening the games total but giving Moglonemby the win on sets.

and Niki Sales. Row Ellis and Kim Saxon backed up the women’s dominance with a 6-2 win. But it was not to be as Strathbogie won all three mixed sets going on to a 24game win and maintaining their lead at the top.

St Pauls played Avenel Red and although expected to win, it was a tighter game than they thought. Kelly and Ella Hill fought hard but went down 6-4 whilst the Scott team of Meehan and Watson won 6-3.

Kelly and Lily Meehan won 6-3 and then Scott Watson and Jake Hill smashed out a 6-1.

In the end St Pauls won by 13 to keep them in touch with the four.

The season resumes early on Wednesday, January 15 to make up for the lost rounds and to finish the draw before the Labour Day weekend.

That Saturday has the match of the round in Euroa with League leaders Strathbogie versus 2nd place Longwood Lawn.

Juniors and HotShots finish the year on a high On Friday, December 17 the junior tennis and HotShot program players gathered for the last evening of play before the holiday break.

It was a warm night but that didn’t stop the players competing at their best level and many close sets were contested.

The younger HotShot players were their usual enthusiastic selves and enjoyed a fun evening.

The Junior Tennis and HotShots program will resume on Friday 4th February 2022.

The Euroa and District Junior Championships will be held on Sunday 20th February 2022 at 9 am at Euroa Lawn Tennis Club.

This is a knock-out singles tournament for girls and boys who play in the Friday evening junior tennis competition.

Many people help to run the junior competition and HotShots program.

Fabulous volunteer coaches and assistants along with enthusiastic parent helpers do an amazing job week after week.

It is the valuable contributions from these people that make the junior competition and HotShots program such a success.

It is a lot of fun for the young tennis players who are the future stars of tennis in Euroa and district.
