By DARREN CHAITMAN EUROA has mixed opinions about the ARTC’s proposed design for the town’s railway station precinct.

The ARTC revealed the design earlier this month and is now seeking feedback over a one-month

consultation period ending on December 1.

The community had already been expecting two significant features of the design: the replacement of the Anderson Street Bridge with a road underpass and the removal of the 150-year-old Euroa Goods Shed.

Some in the community continue to oppose these changes, but a new focal point of debate has now emerged: the location of the station entrance.

In the ARTC’s design, the station entrance is proposed to face the Euroa Hotel.

Mayor requested suspension after monthly meeting, says Weatherald ACCORDING to Cr Robin Weatherald, Mayor Laura Binks requested all Strathbogie Shire councillors be suspended sometime after the council meeting on Tuesday, November 21 (last night).

Speaking unofficially, Cr Weatherald said the reason Mayor Binks requested Local

Government Minister Melissa Horne delay suspending councillors until after this meeting was to allow council to wrap up certain items of business.

THE walkway over Goulburn Weir (pictured) has reopened to the public following the completion of inspection and maintenance works on the weir.

“Goulburn Weir plays a crucial role in providing water for northern Victoria.

“Regular maintenance works on the weir help ensure its long-term integrity, and ensures it can continue to benefit communities downstream.”

The walkway will temporarily be closed again in February 2024 to allow for periodic testing of Goulburn Weir’s post-tensioned anchors.

Goulburn Weir Recreation Reserve will remain open to the public, as will the toilet block at the reserve.

Post-tensioned anchors are used to improve the stability of weirs during extreme events such as floods and earthquakes.

The walkway will reopen upon the completion of the testing, which is likely to be in mid-March.

why councillors should not be suspended and that, according to Cr Weatherald, Cr Binks was set to respond by recommending all councillors be suspended.

The Euroa Gazette understands this request was sent to the minister by November 10.

Minister Horne is expected to make a decision and share this publicly along with monitor Peter Stephenson’s final report at an undisclosed time.

This term of council has seen the appointment of two municipal monitors and the resignations of four councillors.

Councillor-elect Shirley Saywell earlier this month stepped down before being sworn in, saying it was clear it was not possible to be “part of a high-functioning and progressive council” at this time.

Cr Reg Dickinson said he could “no longer work in a toxic environment” upon

resigning in August.

Minister Horne cited concerns regarding poor governance and conduct when she appointed a second municipal monitor to the council in May, but specific incidents demonstrating these concerns have not yet been made public due to confidentiality.

Members of EuroaConnect – a group advocating on matters relating to the station precinct – are among those who believe a superior design would see the station entrance face Binney Street.

“We think that an outcome which firstly no longer aligns with the end of Binney Street, but also is nothing more than a couple of carparks and some surrounding trees, is very disappointing,” EuroaConnect president John Simpson said.

“We certainly will be pursuing the issue of alignment with the end of Binney Street, because if the station and its precinct is going to be a focal point of the town, then it should connect directly to the main business area.”

Aligning the station entrance with the end of Binney Street would require the ARTC to purchase Franz Kloft Mechanical Repairs to incorporate the building into their design.

Owner Franz Kloft said the ARTC had earlier suggested they intended to purchase the property from him, but more recently told him at this stage, they no longer planned to purchase it.

But Mr Kloft said if the ARTC’s proposed precinct design was “rejected”, he understood they may still want to purchase the property and they would “try let me know by the end of the year”.

“I just want to know whether they will or won’t, so I can go ahead and sell the place… hopefully they’ll buy it, because it’s been two and a half years they’ve been stringing me along,” he said.

“The current space that they’re putting the precinct into is small – we would like to see it expanded to incorporate Klofty’s … so that when people approach, there’s something special and welcoming,” she said.

“And when you get off the train, you get off the train into a fabulous space.

“Rather than… well, we get off, ‘what’s good about this town?’”

Euroa Chamber of Commerce president Steph Swift said the chamber would welcome any movements that help connect the new precinct with Binney Street, and they will continue to discuss these opportunities with the ARTC. Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said she thinks it is unlikely the ARTC would purchase Mr Kloft’s property given what she described as the “cost blowout” of the Inland Rail project.

Cr Binks said in a conversation

she had with Infrastructure Minister Catherine King in Canberra earlier this year, the minister “was very clear that the ARTC has limited funds and will be delivering only what they are required to do and [not] anything beyond what is a requirement of their project”.

An ARTC spokesperson said property is only acquired if it’s necessary for the delivery of Inland Rail.

“The project avoids acquiring and impacting on properties and businesses that are not required to build Inland Rail,” the spokesperson said.

“Discussions with property landowners are confidential and ongoing.

“The design of the Euroa rail precinct has been refined over numerous stages to meet the requirements of the multiple agencies and asset owners and incorporates community feedback.

“ARTC Inland Rail has spoken to over 225 locals about the current design and will

incorporate their feedback and suggestions into the final design where possible.”

A Facebook post created by The Euroa Gazette, which shared an article revealing the ARTC’s proposed design, attracted 44 comments.

The most popular comment, which was “liked” by 20 people, said the design looked “about a million times better than what’s there now”.

But many other comments shared negative views on the design.

“Here I was thinking that what we have now looks horrible,” Euroa’s Brendan Paterson wrote.

“The biggest mistake in the history of Euroa, worse than the current overpass,” local historian Loretta McPherson wrote.

“I had them come to my house, I told them it looks like a jail,” another comment read.

Other comments described it as “awful” and “hideous”, and complained there was “too much concrete”.

Town planner Troy Spencer, who is the planning director at Planography, was another Euroa resident unimpressed by the design.

“There’ll be concrete barriers required for the [underpass] tunnel that will extend far beyond what’s there at the moment,” he said.

He said the concrete barriers would also have a fence on top, making it an imposing sight – “we’re talking about something that’s not that pleasing on the eye”.

Questions raised on council’s $100,000 station precinct grant Council to release “master p plan” work to tender in comingg weeks

By DARREN CHAITMAN B THE ARTC’S release of their proposed design for the Euroa Railway Station Precinct has raised questions about the status of a $100,000 grant Strathbogie Shire Council received last year to create a master plan for the station precinct.

In October last year, council announced they had received a State Government grant to “investigate future opportunities at the Euroa train station site, including opportunities for developing any surplus land”.

The ARTC’s recently released design proposes developments in the land surrounding the train station, as well as upgrades to the station.

But Mayor Laura Binks denied the ARTC had beaten council to the finish line, saying the council is “excited we are now able to progress our work on the Euroa Railway Precinct Master Plan”.

“Now the ARTC has confirmed

the underpass solution th d l ti iis progressing, we expect to release this work to tender in coming weeks,” she said.

“The master plan is a separate piece of work to the recent designs released by ARTC to showcase a proposed railway station upgrade.

“It will investigate future opportunities at the Euroa rail station site, including opportunities for developing any surplus land to improve the connectivity, accessibility, and useability of the Railway Precinct and its interface with the broader Euroa township.

“We are eager to create a master plan that connects our community.”

Cr Binks acknowledged the ARTC plan already includes land surrounding the train station, but said “the master plan will look at the areas outside of the ARTC’s land…the areas outside of what they’re required to deliver as part of their project”.

Even if the ARTC’s design

changes their h ffollowing ll i th i onemonth consultation period, she said these changes “could be incorporated because they’re not going to be major changes … we know where the rail alignment’s going, we know where the road alignment’s going, we know that we’ve got an underpass – a lot is known now because they have confirmed it.”

Giving one example of an outcome of the the master plan, she said the plan could potentially consider infrastructure to go in the green spaces in the ARTC design.

She said the scope of the master plan would be broad – if the master plan identified the community wanted an amphitheatre (for example), the location of the amphitheatre could still be decided at a later stage.

The eventual construction following the master plan would be “subject to budget allocation and grant opportunities,” Cr Binks said.

Fire restrictions to begin on Monday STRATHBOGIE Shire’s Fire Danger Period (FDP) will begin on Monday, November 27 from 1am.

The region will join council areas across the north east in entering the FDP, including Wangaratta, Wodonga, Alpine, Indigo, Benalla and Mansfield.

Hotter and drier summer conditions are expected over the coming months, as the El Nino weather pattern continues to set in.

Communities are being urged to prepare their properties and establish a bushfire survival plan.

“As we head into summer,

fuel loads are becoming greater, so we are asking residents to take this opportunity ahead of the restrictions to clean up their properties,” North East CFA Deputy Chief Officer Ross Sullivan said.

“All it takes is some basic maintenance such as clearing your gutters, picking up loose leaves and twigs, pruning tree branches so they aren’t overhanging the roof of your property, or even just keeping your lawn under 10cm tall.

“We are also urging landowners to conduct safe private burn-offs where possible and to register

them online in advance.”

Those conducting burn-offs in the lead-up to the FDP must notify authorities online by visiting www.firepermits. vic.gov.au or by calling the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority on 1800 668 511.

No burning off is permitted during the FDP without a permit, which can be applied for through the Fire Permits Victoria website.

He said EuroaConnect had pressed the council to work collaboratively and in tandem with the ARTC. “If council had been proactive 12 months ago, the community would not be reacting currently to a bad plan,” EuroaConnect member Shirley Saywell said.

“I’ve got two words: horse, bolted.”

Ms Saywell said the idea that changes to the ARTC’s design would not affect the council’s master plan “doesn’t make sense”.

“By the time they get responses [to the tender request], the consultation period will be over – this is a concern,” she said.

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE Victorian Electoral Commission has verbally advised council officers that the cost of one of Strathbogie Shire Council’s two upcoming by-elections will be in the order of $90,000.

According to this month’s council meeting report, this figure was given as the approximate cost a by-election set to be held for Lake Nagambie Ward at a date to be decided by the electoral commissioner, following the resignation of Cr Reg Dickinson last month.

Neither council nor the VEC were able to advise the projected cost of the Seven Creeks Ward by-election (also at a date still to be decided),

which follows the resignation of Cr Kristy Hourigan in August and stepping down of Cr-Elect Shirley Saywell earlier this month.

If the Seven Creeks by-election were to cost the same as the Nagambie by-election, the cost could be in the order of $180,000.

A VEC spokesperson said the cost of a council by-election can vary significantly depending on variables such as enrolment numbers, number of candidates, election office accommodation, and newspaper advertising.

“For example, if a council chooses to use newspaper advertising for a by election, this would increase the cost,” the spokesperson said.

Mayor Laura Binks said the 2020 Honeysuckle Creek Ward by-election cost council about $30,000.

“Initial indications by the VEC are that a single position by-election could now cost significantly more, but a figure cannot be confirmed at this time,” she said.

A VEC spokesperson said if all councillors were to be stood down or suspended, the VEC would still proceed with filling any extraordinary vacancies, but if all councillors were dismissed, this process would cease.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 2020, a byelection must be held within 100 days of an extraordinary vacancy occurring.

Additional roads funding must prioritise dangerous regional roads: Haines INDEPENDENT Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines has welcomed additional funding being directed to local road maintenance following the Australian Government’s announced increases to two key local roads investment programs.

Funding for the Roads to Recovery program will rise gradually from $500 million to $1 billion per year, while the Black Spot program funding will increase from $110 million to $150 million per year.

“I’ve long called for increased funding for councils to maintain local roads.

While I welcome the Government’s announcement, I want to see this funding hit the ground as soon as possible,” Dr Haines said.

“Regional and rural roads across the North East have been battered by severe weather events resulting in dangerous potholes and lane closures. These roads are disintegrating before our eyes and need to be prioritised.

“Regional and rural communities spend most of their time on local roads, and we deserve to feel safe using these roads to get to and from home, work and school.”

In Question Time on Thursday, Dr Haines called on the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King to explain how the Government was going to improve the ‘dire’ state of regional and rural roads.

“I wanted to know what the government was going to do to improve the state of regional and rural roads fol-

“Everyone who uses our local roads understands the problems we face in regional Victoria. Right across my electorate, dangerous roads and potholes are the leading issue people tell me about.

“As a member of the parliamentary committee investigating the impact of severe weather events on regional and rural roads, I worked hard to ensure our region had its voice heard, and the committee members understood the experiences of local road users.”

The increases in funding, announced on Sunday, will be phased in over four years

with the Government committing to working with local council stakeholders in the lead-up to the Federal Budget in May 2024.

“The Minister says funding will be provided to local councils for road maintenance based on population, road distance and how damaged the roads are,” Dr Haines said.

“We know that regional and rural councils are responsible for extensive road networks yet have smaller ratepayer bases than big cities from which to raise revenue.

“I will be working to ensure our local councils get a fair and adequate share of this road funding, and that they’re not given short shrift in favour of larger, wealthier city councils.”

By DARREN CHAITMAN STRATHBOGIE Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks has welcomed new legislation announced by Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne, which will give the State Government increased powers to deter councillors from behaving poorly.

The legislation – which was announced last week and is expected to be introduced in early 2024 – will give the minister the ability to suspend or disqualify individual councillors found to have created a risk to health and safety or prevented the council from performing its function.

It will allow the state’s chief municipal monitor to issue infringement notices, and will introduce mandatory ongoing training for councillors and a model code of conduct for councillors across the state.

Cr Binks said she was “thrilled to hear of these much-needed reforms”.

“We have experienced multiple code of conduct breaches and regular unacceptable behaviour towards each other, the CEO, and the council officers,” she said.

“It has been awful, but this news makes our fight worthwhile.

New laws will allow the ggovernment to fine and suspend p individual councillors “Sitting back and doing nothing, or in fact resigning, would have been much easier, but I am not willing to compromise on workplace safety.”

She said tougher laws would hold councillors accountable for their actions.

“It is all of our responsibilities to understand and uphold the Local Government Act and the many policies, plans, charters and strategies that are a part of Strathbogie Shire Council.

“The most important of these, I believe, is the Strathbogie Shire Councillor Code of Conduct. It is a document which has very clear standards of conduct, as are prescribed under the Local Government Act. “The failure to uphold these standards of conduct leads to a disrespectful and unsafe workplace.

“This is unacceptable.”

But Cr Binks looks forward to a “new chapter of local government” which would see “safe, respectful, and professional decision-making environments”.

According to the State Government, almost 30 councillors across Victoria have re-

signed since January, while municipal monitors “have been appointed as an urgent intervention to protect local communities eight times in 18 months”.

The new legislation will draw on The Local Government Culture Project, which received more than 140 submissions from Victorian residents, mayors, councillors, council staff and peak bodies, culminating in an insights report released last year.

Minister Horne said the reforms “will help encourage quality candidates to come forward for the 2024 polls”.

“Victorians rightly have high expectations of their local councillors and these changes will ensure residents can have confidence their best interests are being served,” she said.

Rural Councils Victoria, of which Cr Binks is deputy chair, also welcomed the announcement.

But Council Watch president Dean Hurlston is strongly against the legislation announced by Minister Horne.

“We think that the minister is completely out of touch with the experience faced by councillors,” he told

“Councillors are constrained ridiculously by the Local Government Act and whilst there is always some bad behaviour in every system, our view… [is] that the mental health pressure is predominantly coming from executives, CEOs and council administrations. “[CEOs are saying] every-

thing that this organisation does is considered operational and councillors can’t get involved, can’t advocate, can’t do anything.

“I talk to councillors every day, and many long-term councillors are literally saying the system is just so toxic and dysfunctional that many… just want to walk away – it’s really sad.”

Precinct design is brutal and uninspiring I VISITED ARTC on Binney street last week after sighting the latest concept perspective.

It is what we call within the architects world “brutalist” (soul-less and without humanity).

Overall, a pathetic second year student’s attempt at best with outdated, uninspiring and over-engineered waste of money, space and no responsibility.

Station entrance should face Binney Street I THINK ARTC has done a good job so far in listening to the Euroa community, and changing their designs based on the feedback.

In my opinion, locating the

entrance to a brand new railway station opposite a hotel is not a good look for Euroa.

The entrance could easily be moved 200 metres north to the end of Binney Street, and that would be a much nicer location for it.

Support our local brigades WITH the fire danger period approaching for much of North

East Victoria, it remains so important that our local CFA brigades receive the support and backing they deserve.

Due to a lack of funding and support from this Ggovernment, many of our dedicated volunteer fire brigades are stuck with the majority of their vehicles, pumpers, and tankers being over 20 years old.

Our CFA brigades are in desperate need of appliances that are fit for purpose in order to protect our volunteer firefighters and to protect our communities.

As we approach summer, their jobs have been made far more difficult by a string of bad decisions by this government when it comes to fire management.

This includes a lack of planned burns, the closing of the sustainable native timber industry, and a reduction in 6500 operational CFA volunteers since 2015.

History has shown the only time this government shows an interest in resourcing our brigades is after tragic fire events.

We simply cannot afford to leave it too late this time.

By CATIE HILL EUROA Health registered midwifery nurse Sue Martin this year celebrates the fantastic milestone of 50 years of service – a remarkable achievement at any workplace these days.

Sue has worked in every clinical position during her career at Euroa Hospital.

Back in the day, Euroa Bush Nursing Hospital was known as “the jewel in the crown” by the Bush Nursing Hospitals Association of Victoria and it was exceptionally well ran.

Sue has so many fascinating stories to share about the days of Euroa Hospital, from the extensive physical expansion overtime of the building, to the changes in its name and the personnel.

In years gone by, nursing staff lived in the nursing quarters (now known as the executive hallway).

Other staff lived in our domestic staff quarters (now our gym).

The Matron at Euroa Hospital would be a care staff member, finance manager and often a cook for patients and staff living onsite.

Patient rooms had open fire places that were stoked and kept alight, and they would spend their days enjoying the fresh air on the verandah, which was enclosed by fly wire looking over a well-maintained hedge and lines of red roses.

The garden was something everyone tended to and the red roses were always an annual winner at the Euroa Show.

Many babies were born at Euroa Hospital –some of those babies now work for Euroa Health today and will tell you that, with pride.

CONGRATULATIONS, SUE: Marcus Hill (pictured with Sue Martin in the centre and Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour on the left) was the first baby delivered under Dr Vogel at Euroa Hospital in 1978, with Sue assisting.

In an era when babies spent their nights in the Nursery, sometimes there could be up to 6 babies at one time.

Sue smiles as she speaks of the young faces in our district who were once one of those ‘babies’.

Sue recalls in the years before Medicare, a locked metal tin kept the payments made by the patients, and the meticulous reconciliation process of that cash every Friday before the cash was delivered to the Secretary of Euroa Hospital in Binney Street Euroa.

General Practitioners like Dr Waterhouse and Dr Dunn were

the pivotal part of the hospital and their pride flowed through Euroa Hospital at every moment.

Sue remarks that nursing has changed: nowadays nursing is less personal and much more task oriented, and in some ways has lost the personal connection of days gone by.

Today nurses practice within different government guidelines, with patient care plans, pathways and policies.

The community supported the hospital (not just when they were inpatients), with deliveries of excess produce from their vegie gardens and farms.

One community member

spent his Sundays distributing ice creams to the patients at his own expense, and these gestures gave community members a sense of security that the hospital was there for them.

The last words of this reflection belong to Sue. “I am proud of the way the community has supported the hospital, and the hospital has supported the community,” she said.

“By working at the hospital I always feel a part of the community, and healthcare as an industry now walks a fine line to balance provision of care against financial pressures”.

Hundreds bolt to Euroa for horse auction

By DARREN CHAITMAN A HORSE auction at the Euroa Saleyards on Saturday brought big numbers to the town.

The organiser from Nagambie, Victorian Country Auctions auctioneer Mark Austin, estimated as many as 500 people could have attended.

“Put it this way, the food van and the coffee van sold out by 11 o’clock,” he said.

There were 170 registered bidders, but many brought along families and companions.

Attendees came from all over Victoria and even Australia, with buyers from Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland all making their way to the auction.

With the RACV Veteran Car Club having booked out much of the town’s accommodation for the weekend, some attendees were unable to find accommodation in Euroa and stayed overnight in towns including Longwood, Benalla and Shepparton.

Mr Austin said it had been the first horse auction in Victoria in four years; the Strathbogie Shire was a great place for it, he thought, as it is “the

horse capital of Victoria”.

He had encouraged attendees to use local transport companies, including Prestige Forces, EquiLink and North East Transport.

He said he is keen to hold horse auctions in Euroa once a month.

Euroa Saleyards Committee member Richard McGeehan said they had allowed Victorian Country Auctions to hold two events at the saleyards as a trial.

“I think the first one went very well, seemed to be really well managed,” he said.

“It was busy – there were a lot of cars in town, and horses, and a weekend market.

“It was a choc-o-block.”

Mr McGeehan said he had anticipated possible complaints from “animal rights people”, but on attending the auction he saw no evidence of animal cruelty, and he had received no complaints.

At the auction on Saturday, The Euroa Gazette spoke to Tom Wilson, who had travelled from Oaklands, NSW, with his girlfriend Courtney Summons, in search of a pony.

“We’ve got a small child in the way, and our neighbour’s got two small children, so we’re looking for a smaller pony, because

at the moment we’ve got [larger] horses,” he said.

“We really want something we can allow child to ride without it being too much of a risk.”

Mr Wilson said he had previously only attended online horse auctions, and the event in Euroa was “a lot more organised than I thought it would be”.

Right now, there are community services jobs available where you can make a difference, helping people who have a disability, families fleeing violence, and children and families who need care and support.

Annual veteran antique car rally wows Euroa with 50 gems THE RACV Veteran Car Club chose Euroa as the setting for their annual rally this weekend.

Veteran cars toured for three days in and Euroa, from Friday to Sunday.

Over 50 antique cars, inlcuding T Fords, Cadillacs, Clement Bayards and many others names

toured from Euroa on Saturday morning to Nagambie for lunch.

Some small cars travelled at 35kph, while the larger 1916 Benz was capable of 80kph.

Some 130 veteran club members in Euroa enjoyed the fine weather and flat roads.

Euroa Show shearing results are in

By CATHY ARTRIDGE IN our shearing and wool handling competitions this year, many volunteers were involved in performing roles such as judging, timekeeping, wool handling, sheep handling, emceeing, score keeping, and more.

Some 61 competitors were involved, with shearers and wool handlers coming from right across Victoria and New South Wales, as well as Queensland and Western Australia.

It was held at a historic location, under the Moreton Bay Figs.

There was a good crowd this year, with successful modifications to the board to accommodate wool handling competition.

Euroa Shearing Association pays My Future Academy homage to local shearing legend programs popular

By CATHY ARTRIDGE & PETER BJORKSTEN PETER Bjorksten’s connections with agricultural shows have been lifelong.

As a young man working with stud sheep, he would prepare sheep and fleeces for showing.

With extensive shearing history he took up competitive show shearing in the late 60s, having successes here at the Euroa Show (where he teamed up with Brian Morrison, Jim Walker, Jim Grant & Max Cox) and also Royal Melbourne, Ballarat and Wangaratta.

In 1975 Peter was invited to join the newly formed Euroa Shearing Association – this turned into 48 years’ membership, many as vice president, president and treasurer.

His role for the first nine years was selecting and preparing sheep for the Golden Shears Competition in Euroa – a considerable task.

The same year Peter

Peter Bjorksten has had a lifelong connection to agricultural shows g joined Stan Artridge, John Hanrahan, David Rush and Bernie Walker on a factfinding mission to see how competitions were run in New Zealand.

He started judging shearing the same year as competition momentum increased due to the Golden Shears in Euroa.

As a team Peter, Stan and John would often be away at weekends shearing judging at ag shows across Victoria or New South Wales.

In 1977 as the Golden Shears Australian Team Manager and invited judge, Peter again travelled to New Zealand with fellow judge Bruce Robinson.

In 1980 Peter was in New Zealand as an observer at the first Golden Shears World Championships, and then again as Australian delegate in 2012.

conference which landed him the job to put together a group to work with the Victorian Wool Industry Training Committee delivering on-the-job training.

He selected a team of four with locals Stan Artridge and Bill O’Connor taking the training into working sheds.

This was so successful that the concept was rolled out across the state.

This system is still used today, along with shearing schools.

At the age of 87 Peter has decided it is time for a rest.

In 48 years he has missed just one show.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Peter for his very long commitment as a judge at Euroa Shears and recognise his long and valued dedication to the shearing and wool industries.

STRATHBOGIE Shire youth have taken part in free My Future Academy programs thanks to council’s youth development program and VicHealth funding.

The programs include “Spartan” for 3-12 years and “Adventures” for 11-17 years.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the attendance had been fantastic with young people being able to participate for free.

“My Future Academy is a fantastic resource for local children and youth and we are so pleased to be able to partner with them to deliver these programs for free,” Cr Binks said.

“It means there is no financial barrier for young people to participate and we know these programs are so incredibly beneficial for their health and wellbeing.

“These activities build confidence through social

connection and physical activity.”

My Future Academy founder Jimmy Ivill said it was great to partner with council’s youth development officer, Annette Walton, to be able to deliver the programs for free.

“Our awesome Spartan program had over 100 children sign up for the term four program,” he said.

“Spartan allows young people to participate in physical activity, play and recreation while being underpinned with a clear focus on positive social and wellbeing outcomes.

“It works on the development of young people through exploration, mentoring, fitness and being challenged – all in a safe and fun environment.

“The Adventure program is a chance to explore and appreciate our natural world while trying some new things and meeting new people.”

Former Neighbours actress to speak on gender-based violence in Nagambie STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is participating in a “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign in Victoria.

This year’s campaign encourages all Victorians to work together to prevent violence against women.

Council’s campaign will include an ARTBOX exhibition in Nagambie, as well as another event in Nagambie.

The Nagambie event, named “Change the Story”, will feature a powerful talk from someone with lived experience of genderbased violence: former Neighbours actress Kym Valentine.

Kym will be sharing her passion for raising awareness and challenging stereotypes about those who experience family violence.

She will share ways communities can support each other to recognise and respond to family and gender based violence.

Following this, joint representatives from Safe and Equal – Victoria’s peak body for specialist family violence services – will facilitate a conversation with Kym and Hannah Dwyer in understanding the move-

End of a successful year for Euroa Garden Club

By DENISE HOLT THE Euroa Garden Club held its annual general meeting on November 17.

The meeting was held at the Euroa Golf Club and members enjoyed the lovely garden atmosphere.

President Rosalie Wrest delivered her report which highlighted the successful membership.

The club has 90 financial members and was happy to welcome 14 new members during 2023.

During the year, the club members enjoyed trips to Benalla, Invergordon and Strathbogie to admire lovely gardens and enjoy the companionship of gardeners.

Guest speakers added interest and passion to meetings which were held in the Show Ground Pavilion.

This venue which was adopted in 2023 was very comfortable, convenient and very much appreciated by members.

The election of office bearers and committee was chaired by Shane Thomson.

The positions of president Rosalie Wrest, treasurer Irene Gilliland and secretary Denise Holt were reelected unopposed and the committee members were also prepared to continue.

The meeting was followed by a barbecue dinner.

Brian Kelly and Tim Hamill generously cooked the meat and Deb Ellis provided salads.

New members are very welcome and new residents to Euroa are invited to come to the February 16 meeting at 1.30pm in the Show Ground Pavilion to meet garden club members for a chat and cup of tea.

SHARING THE EUROA REFERENCE DESIGN Thank you to everyone who has made time to visit our shopfront and provide their feedback on the Euroa Reference Design.

In Euroa, we’re modifying the station precinct and replacing the Anderson Street bridge with a vehicle underpass to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains.

Almost 100 people have already dropped into our shopfront over two days to share their ideas on ways to enhance the look and feel of the station precinct.

Reference Design is where you can provide feedback to influence colour, signage and landscape options, the development of the station forecourt and the precinct layout including paths, parking and connections with the surrounding area.

We’ve heard you like the open, accessible and functional design which better connects Railway Street and the station. You’re also pleased we’re improving accessibility for all with lifts, ramps and stairs to the existing and new station platforms.

If you haven’t had the chance to view the design, it’s not too late as we’re extending our shopfront hours at 46-50 Binney Street throughout November.

Livestock program teaches ladies practical farm skills

By JACKIE LAUGHLIN LADIES In Livestock has taken off with the ladies.

They range in experience and age from in their 60s to 16 years old.

The ladies began the season with yarding, marking, tagging and vaccinating lambs – each practising until they felt confident.

The generous host, Marg Davis of Warrenbayne, provided the lambs, support and assistance when needed.

The second session was held at Elmore Field Day. Many of the ladies had not attended a field day before and were enthusiastic.

As the principal facilitator of Ladies in Livestock, I explained details of yards and their designs, new equipment and inventions that can be used on the farm.

Last week the session was held at Goorambat Wagyus.

The generous host Dom Bayard, and his farm hand Meg, instructed the ladies on marking, vaccinating, tagging and DNA collection on their wagyu calves.

The ladies were thrilled to finish the morning confident of their newfound skills.

By BERRY STREET BERRY Street is urgently seeking volunteer mentors in the L2P program to assist learner drivers between 16 and 21 years of age who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the driving experience they require in order to obtain their probationary license.

The L2P program is in its 13th year and has a wait list of young people requiring immediate support.

Each learner driver is matched with a trained vol-

unteer mentor who support the learner to gain their 120 hours of driving experience which is a requirement under the Victorian Graduated Licencing System.

L2P focuses on supporting disadvantaged learners to gain supervised driving experience in different environments whilst building their confidence and safety on the roads to reduce the road toll and injury rates.

There are many additional benefits for the young person obtaining their license, including improved employment opportunities

and improved social connection and independence.

Mentors have the use of a five-star ANCAP rated vehicle along with training, and they are also covered through the Berry Street Volunteer insurance scheme.

Mentors must be over the age of 21, have a full license and can commit a minimum of 1 hour per week.

As the weather warms up, mosquito numbers are increasing! Warm and wet weather provides the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases like Ross River Fever and Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV). JE virus is a rare but potentially serious infection of the brain caused by a virus spread to humans through mosquito bites.

VARICELLA (chicken pox / shingles) Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus that is a highly contagious infection.

Symptoms appear around two to three weeks after exposure, including mild fever, headache, runny nose, sore throat, and a distinctive skin rash. Diagnosis is best left to your GP or health professional. Most cases are mild and resolve on their own. To manage symptoms get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, control fever with paracetamol, using calamine lotion for itch relief, try and prevent scratching, especially for infants. Understanding JEV JEV is mostly spread to humans from pigs via mosquito bites but the good news is it cannot be spread from human to human. It also cannot be spread by eating pork.

Here's what you can do: 1.Use Mosquito Repellent: Apply DEET, Picaridin, or Lemon Eucalyptus-based repellents on exposed skin.

2.Dress Smart: Opt for light, loosefitting clothing, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

3.Secure Your Space: Ensure mosquito nettings and screens in your accommodation to keep the bugs out..

4.Eliminate Breeding Grounds: Get rid of stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed around your home.

5.Stay Cautious: Be mindful around lakes, creeks, rivers, and dams, where mosquito activity is higher.

At higher risk? Get vaccinated.

People who live, work or spend time outdoors in northern Victoria, particularly in inland riverine regions extending up towards the Murray River, may be at higher risk of Japanese encephalitis. People who live or work at properties with pigs may also be at higher risk.

In Victoria, JE vaccine is free-ofcharge for eligible individuals. Please note, some providers may charge an administration or consultation fee. Be sure to check if this applies to you.

GASTROENTERITIS IN CHILDREN Gastroenteritis (or gastro) is a bowel infection that causes diarrhoea and sometimes vomiting.

It can cause dehydration, especially in young children and babies. Children in particular need to drink plenty of clear fluids. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to prevent gastroenteritis infection. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are not effective against gastroenteritis. Keep your child away from others until 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped. If symptoms persist, visit your local GP. Fashions of the world on show at FAFA event

By MAYETTE MARTIN THE Fillipino-Australians and Friends Association’s United Nations International Parade of Costumes took place on Saturday, November 11 at the Overlander Hotel in Shepparton.

It was a day filled with vibrant costumes from around the world, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

The event featured captivating dance performances, including native Philippine dances and lively Hawaiian numbers like “Pearly Shells” and “Tiny Bubbles”.

Entertainment was abun-

dant, with music, singing, dancing and raffle draws.

We were honoured to have esteemed guest speakers, Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell and Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keefe, grace our celebration.

The evening’s highlight was the international fashion parade, brilliantly judged by Ms O’Keefe and Julie Mercer.

Selecting the winners was no small feat, as everyone looked stunning and walked the catwalk like professional models.

Our president, Euroa’s Delma Broughton, always manages to surprise us on every occasion.

Her homemade sticky rice cake and glutinous rice cake were sweet treats enjoyed by all, including myself.

Once again, I had the privilege of witnessing the unity, togetherness, and friendship that bind us all together in FAFA. On behalf of FAFA, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved.

Fundraising continues for Ruffy Hall restoration

By SHARRON BATT THE latest fundraiser for the Ruffy Hall restoration fund was a great success.

Ten tables of eager participants enjoyed a fun evening of quizzes, challenges and puzzles to exercise their mental, aeronautical and engineering skills.

Quiz masters Justus Hagen and Darryl Otzen did an excellent job of keeping the night on track and providing thoughtprovoking, interesting questions.

The winners were The Terrific Terripians on 73 points; in second place were The Seedlings on 71 points; and and third place went to The Famous Five on 64 points.

Congratulations to the team from Terrip Terrip on winning for the second year in a row, well done.

Using straws and sticky tape

to construct a tower strong enough to hold a mandarin, The Creighton’s Creek Warriors won the engineering prize by constructing a tower 1200mm high.

Once again the famous Ruffy supper lived up to its reputation, with the Ruffy cooks providing an abundant spread of mouth-watering homemade treats.

It was magnificent and much appreciated by the participants.

After supper, hall committee president Henry Noye drew the fundraising raffle.

Strathbogie Cup Festival weekend a winner

By LISA DUGGAN OVER the four days of the Melbourne Cup Weekend, the small township of Strathbogie was a hive of activities and events for the inaugural Strathbogie Cup Weekend Festival.

Run as a fundraiser for the Strathbogie Tableland History Group, Strathbogie Tennis Club and Strathbogie Golf Club, the idea was not only to bring locals and visitors together for some fun, but to showcase our local region and support the many small local businesses that exist in our region.

The festival kicked off on the Saturday with croquet and a high tea luncheon.

Winners of the “best dressed in in all whites” and a voucher to Café 56 were Will Campbell and Amelia Mecuri.

Saturday night saw the Strathbogie Memorial Hall pumping once again, with a bush dance and dinner, featuring the Briagolong Bush Band.

This proved to be a great hit with families, with long term locals reporting that it reminded them of growing up in the area when dances at the hall were a regular occurrence.

Thanks to Euroa local John Moore, a few more couples will know the steps to the Pride of Erin next year.

Tennis was the focus first thing Sunday as the soon to be annual Strathbogie Ten-

The Recreation Reserve was a hive of activity with a barbecue and an afternoon of old fashioned kids’ sports.

“It was great driving in with our grandchildren for the sports and seeing the courts alive, the oval full of activity and children running around with face painting,” local Archie Bayles said.

Mr Bayles had played for the tennis club for 10 years before it folded.

The face painting seemed to be a hit with adults and children alike.

Sunday night was a special treat for those who attended the Italian feast thanks to the amazing talents of local chefs Craig and Marnie Mecuri, who donated their time to raise funds for the re-formed tennis club.

An auction run by Col Broughton raised much needed funds for new tennis nets.

Up for auction were a Point Leo experience for four (sold to Archie Bayles for $1250), a Point Leo experience for two (sold to Peter Bretherton for $1000), a salami master class (sold to Marco Carafa of Red Granite Olive Oil for $1200), a dressed lamb (sold to Bob Hendry for $500), another dressed lamb (sold to Ben Gaidzkar for $450), and a hut

experience for 10 (sold to Greg Johnstone for $3500).

The golf tournament on Monday of the festival at Strathbogie Golf Club saw golfers from all over enjoy the beautiful weather and course, which is maintained entirely by a team of volunteers.

Whilst many enjoyed the golf, a small but dedicated group took the opportunity of a rare guided cemetery tour with local historian, Anne Simpson.

Proving their stamina, locals and visitors alike spent Monday evening at Seven Creeks Wagyu, enjoying the music of the talented Fem Belling and her band.

What a treat – the vocals of Fem were truly mesmerising and you couldn’t have asked for a more scenic location.

The final day of the festival saw all come together again (although some were looking a little wearier than on day one) for the “Melbourne Cup Day Spectacular” lunch function at the Strathbogie Golf Club.

Fun, feasting and fashions were the constants of the day.

What an amazing kitchen team they have at the club.

The “Strathbogie Cup” was won by Helen Kennett, whilst the fashions on the field were taken out by Pennie Beard (women’s), David Kennett (men’s), Phil Fry

(novelty), and Lisa Duggan and Bas Taggert (couple).

The colourful wooden racehorses were made by the Yarck Men’s Shed and decorated by the schoolchildren of Peranbin Strathbogie campus.

Overall, the four days of fun and activities had something to appeal to everyone and shows what a small community can achieve when they band together.

Way Back Wednesday - a look back at what was making news 50 years ago this week ON this week 50 years ago, the Gazette’s front page story was a report of suspected extraterrestrial activity near Euroa.

“UFO identified…” the bold heading read in the November 21, 1973 edition of this masthead.

But journalist Tom Schneiders wrote this was not the heading he had originally planned. “‘UFO lands near Euroa’. This was the headline we planned as Lindsay Donaldson and I set out to investigate a report of rings of burnt grass in a paddock,” Mr Schneiders wrote.

“Our destination was Dropmore near Ruffy, about 26 miles from Euroa.

“Following good directions given by our informant, a Kyabram man, we left at about 10am armed with a camera and a large stick for protection from snakes.

“Many hours later, after an eerie trip along roads lined with huge boulders, we neared our goal.

“No sign of life was visible except for a few magpies, kookaburras and crows.

“We had climbed innumerable fences and had soaked feet from tramping through the wet paddocks.

“Then, eyes transfixed, we suddenly came upon three mysterious rings of what appeared to be burnt grass.

“Cautiously we looked around to find further evidence of a UFO landing.

“And there it was – the evidence and the proof.

“But not, it seemed, of a UFO. “In the paddock a little further on was

a sheep, a poor blind sheep, walking around in circles following a known path of grass apparently already flattened by its own feet.

“Nearby were other similar circles.

“It could have been a good story, instead it became a sad one.

“Perhaps it could be said at this point that a suffering animal and a four hour trip could both have been saved if a crow trap, similar to the one used by Mr Carl Frederick of Caniambo, was in use in this area.

“Obviously the poor sheep had been attacked by crows and left in this helpless condition.”

Regular readers of The Euroa Gazette’s Wayback Wednesday column will remember Mr Carl Frederick’s crow trap was a subject of debate among locals 50 years, with one local writing a letter to the editor accusing Mr Frederick of cruelty for using a crow trap, compelling Mr Frederick to defend himself in a response letter.

Concluding his front-page UFO report, Mr Schneiders was keen to keep the mystery alive.

“So who really knows?” he wrote.

“Did the blind sheep we found cause the mysterious rings, or was he walking around the track of a UFO landing site unable to see that it led him nowhere?”

Also on the front page this week, the date incorrectly appeared as November 14, 1973.

Perhaps Mr Schneiders was having a little too much fun to notice this detail.

LAST Wednesday, the Longwood Action Group met for their AGM and a new executive committee and general committee were formed.

A big thank you to new members and office bearers who put up their hands for the job and to our outgoing president Will Dwyer, relief secretary Elyse Dwyer and secretary Emily Naughton for their hard work during their tenures.

We look forward to another year of projects to enhance and nurture our beautiful town.

On this note, the action group are planning “Let’s Light up Longwood for Christmas”.

This year we would love everyone to come together in the true Christmas spirit and be part of putting some Christmas cheer in your front yard for everyone to enjoy.

On Sunday, the action group will hold a working bee and will be around town from 10am12pm to help anyone who needs a hand putting lights up.

Any old lights or other donations can be put at the shop for others to enjoy.

On December 1, as a whole town let’s turn on the lights each night for the month of December to encourage visitors to see our beautiful town.

The next festive initiative is Grinchmas in Longwood.

Grinchmas is an annual holiday tradition inspired by Dr Seuss’s classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas that encourages readers to “grow your heart three sizes” through the celebration of family reading, giving from the heart and community spirit.

National Grinch Day, December 1, kick starts the 25 Days of Grinchmas.

During this time “Grinch & Max” will be roaming around Longwood, so be sure to keep an eye out for them both.

WE had 12 players for a Stableford round and a chance to win the first Monthly Medal for the 2023/24 season.

The winner of the Medal , A and B Grade and the Seymour Club Voucher was Monica Hurley with 35pts.

The winner of C Grade was Jane Bow with 32pts.

The nine hole competition winner was Monica 16pts on a Count back from Bev Brown.

Nearest to the pin on both the third and 16th was Moz Fowler.

18 hole balls down the line went to Monica 35pts, Kylie Carmichael 32pts and Carol Wallis 32pts on a Count back from Jane.

Nine hole balls down the line went to Monica 16pts , Bev 16pts and Jane 15pts.

There were 25 players for a Stoke round.

The winner was Glen Evans 42/9/33net.

The runners up was the in form Jane Bow 54/20/34net on a Count back from her husband Gary.

We welcomed some visitors from Melbourne and Mansfield, and they enjoyed playing the course.

The men hit off on the ladies tees today and the ladies certainly showed them how to play them.

The winner of the Men’s competition was Graeme Carnegie with a great score of 40 points.

The winner of the ladies competition was Victoria Fry with a score of 45 points.

Lineballs were won by Kristen Moore with 44 points, Ria Pearce with 42 points, Phil Raftery with 38 points, Wally Dunn with 39 points and Jim McAlister with 37 points.

Nearest the pin winners were Phil Fry on the forth, Phil Raftery on the eighth, Grant Pearce on the 15th and Ria Pearce on the 17th.

Ladies drive and pitch was won by Kerry Hewlett The straightest drive was won by Chris Kerr.

Next week is Stableford and Fran Kearney is on Duty.

golf club for the annual Nagambie/Heathcote challenge sponsored by the Royal Mail Hotel Nagambie.

Sixty-six players from both clubs played a stableford round where the local Heathcote members were to good and once again won the challenge which now works out at three from three with Nagambie yet to win one.

The best results from the Nagambie players on the day were Jeremy Ezard and Jim Doyle doing the club proud with 34 points, next best were Gary Bow on 33 and David Love on 31.

Jane Bow was the best of the ladies with a very nice 32 points.

The Nagambie members did not leave completely empty handed with Tim Baldwin claiming a nearest the pin on the 13th and Terry Lowis winning a nearest the pin on the 18th.

Next week is a big week for the club with the annual presentation night happening on Saturday, November 25 starting at 6 pm, a two course meal will be served with the ‘BIG O’ the entertainment for the evening, please supply bookings to Ronda on 0408 349 505.

The weather was perfect ranging from 19 to 25 degrees Celsius during play for the 102 players, including one guest from Bairnsdale, Vic. Some excellent scores (net strokes) were recorded, especially in the lower grades.

A-Grade winner was club captain John McHale, Valley View, net 70 / 38 stableford points; and runner-up was Kelly Cheong, Rushworth 71/37.

B-Grade winner was William Wright, Euroa, 66/42; from Kevin Humbert, Lockington with 67/41.

C-Grade winner was Mike Prater, Kialla, 65/43; on countback from Ian Scurrah, Lockington 65/42.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 114 metre long, 18th hole with Greg Austin, Mooroopna, best in A-Grade; Ray Coleman, Parkland, in B-Grade; and Barry Cryer, Nagambie in C-Grade.

By KATE DONOVAN Midweek Pennant Division six Round five Avenel 12 - 47 defeated Rushworth 2 – 34.

A win in the away game against Rushworth puts the Avenel Division six team fourth on the ladder.

Norm Billingsley, Bill O’Connor, Ruth Underwood, Glen Bell (s) were up 12 -1 after the first six ends.

They went from strength to strength winning fifteen of the 21 ends including the last five ends to record a convincing win 30 – 10.

With only a few shots separating the teams all game, Mark Morse, Moiann Papageorgiou, Graeme Toy, Marion Gittus (s) drew even on the 17th end.

However, they could not stop the late surge from Rushworth who scored two fours over the last four ends.

Midweek Pennant Division three Round five Avenel 14 – 67 defeated Nagambie 2 - 65.

A cliffhanger match that came down to the last end of the seventy-five ends played saw Avenel victorious to remain on top of the ladder.

Rusty Schwab, James Wall, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) have not lost a game all season and continued with their impeccable form for another win, 25 – 18.

Noel Slater, Graham Lewis, Pam Pedder, Geoff Hateley )s) were down twelve shots just before the break for lunch.

They won nine of the remaining twelve ends including a five on the second last end to claim a hard-fought victory, 29 – 23.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) were in chase mode all game after losing the first six ends.

Midway through the second half they fought back to be only down by one shot.

However, Nagambie found its mojo again to pull away with a 24 – 13 win.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round six Avenel 4 – 84 were defeated by Seymour VRI 14 – 114.

With many lead changes all game Howard Geldard, Noel Slater, Brett McDonald, Geoff Hateley (s) held onto a slender lead when it counted most, on the 25th end, winning the game 21 – 18.

Pam Pedder, Donna Rowley, James Wall, Jake Wall (s) were behind all game until a five on the 19th end propelled them into the lead by four shots.

But Seymour VRI chase them down for the scores to be even with one end to play.

In Midweek Pennant our Division one team lost to East Shepp on the last bowl of the match, Division four were narrowly defeated by Shepp Park and Division five returned to the winners list defeating Seymour on a cold and windy day.

On Wednesday 11 visitors – Graduates from Ballarat Teachers College holding a 50-year reunion – joined with members of our club for a great afternoon of Social Bowls.

It turned out to be an enjoyable day with the visitors stating what a wonderful town Euroa was to visit and what a pleasure our greens were to bowl on.

In a break from tradition winners were drawn by wild

card and in a strange quirk of fate three of the visitors – Jan, Andy and Doc – collected the cash.

Thursday saw 48 bowlers compete in the GV Women over 60’s competition in another big day at the club.

There have been some magnificent clashes in the club championships with several games going down to the wire.

The closest was a 25-24 result with a couple of 25-22 games as well.

It has also been pleasing to see other bowlers turning up to watch and support their fellow club members.

The Friday Night raffle winners were Don Steers (meat tray) and Tony Kingma (bottle of wine) whilst Graeme Goode (money back guarantee) and Richard Noble cleaned up in the Nifty 50 draws.

In weekend pennant Division one broke through for their first win of the season, Division four overcame Seymour and Division six went down to Violet Town in tight tussle.

Perfect conditions for tennis dominance over the weekend

By CAROLINE KEENAN WHILE the weather was warm on Saturday, it was better conditions for tennis with the absence of the wind from the week before.

In section B, ladder leader St Paul’s played another young debutante this week, the third in as many weeks.

Joel Hamil kicked off his Saturday tennis career in winning form after fighting back to claim victory in the mixed against Benalla Gardens.

He joins other youngsters added to the St Paul’s list in Avie Hill and Will Davey.

The ladies Kelly Hill, Avie Hill and Caroline Keenan won all their sets on the hard courts at Benalla Gardens, as did Jake Hill.

The final score was St Paul’s 64 to Benalla Gardens 35.

Longwood Lawn had a tougher afternoon when the side travelled to Avenel.

Captain Craig Durkin enjoyed two winning sets in the mens but the home side was a little too strong for the Longwood ladies.

The final score was 67 to 39.

There was almost an upset in Division A when Long-

wood Lawn threatened to topple ladder leader St Paul’s.

Lawn got to within a handful of games, thanks in no small part to the contribution of Molly Redfern, who played her best tennis of the season.

St Paul’s welcomed Jason Goss whose consistent form in Section B earned him a spot in the Section A side.

But it was the three winning sets from Mark Borthwick and Scott Watson’s strong win in the mixed with Faye Mollison that proved the difference.

The final score was 56 to 50.

Missing the services of Bob Furphy, Gooram fell agonisingly short of ending its losing streak against Gardens Gold at Benalla.

With captain Chris Ellis having to play as a man, she teamed up for a win with Josh Higgins but the standout performance came from Kim McCabe who won all her sets.

Gooram went down by one game. 55-56 And the in-form Euroa Lawn continues its steady climb up the ladder after a dominant win over Moglonemby.

Bowls club hosts a triumphant Nagambie cup night IN the spirit of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival the Nagambie Bowls Club held a Nagambie Cup dinner and racing games evening on Saturday, November 11 at their clubrooms.

The clubrooms were decorated with hors0e shoes, balloons, and floral table decorations.

Close to 70 locals attended and enjoyed the delicious two course dinner provided by the bowls club president Joe Gattuso and his helpers.

Some patrons dressed up to the nines along with fascinator and hats while others dressed in casual style Cup goers formed syndicate teams and named their race teams accordingly like the Diggers, Magnificent 7, Specky’s Team, Deb and Noel’s crew, Wombat and Mugsy and Mitchell winners.

They chose their horse from the form guide in each of the six races.

Some innovative horse names gave the race punters many a laugh and were based on some of the team folk and sponsors the club gained for the fundraiser evening.

Representatives from their syndicate team then took part in the auctions to gain a horse at a final top price declared by auctioneers Tyson “Bushy” Bush and Steve Taylor before the race could proceed ahead.

After the auction for each race each team had a member throw a large sponge dice that declared the number of squares their horse would travel along the race table.

The race table was covered with a tablecloth featuring horse racing scenery and was divided up into six sections for six horses to compete.

As each dice was thrown the number on the dice was stepped out by hand along the course til the end of the table.

The first past the post won.

The six races lucky winners went into the final Nagambie Cup race, with the Magnificent Seven coming out winners of the pool prize.

The winning Table was seven.

The Magnificent 7 Team of Brett Johnson, Miles Johnson, Beck Juzva, Andrea Richards, Ben Cassar, Chris Anderson, Jacqui Anderson.

Fiona Smith and Fintan Butler were the Best Dressed and Angel Manneken, Kaye Tennant, Jenny Jones and Noel Luff the Best Hats winners.

A fun night was had by all and the Nagambie Bowls Club thanks all those who supported their Nagambie Cup evening that helped them with their fundraising efforts for the coming season.

Euroa A grade saves outright defeat EUROA CRICKET CLUB - A GRADE

By SCOTT HAMILTON THE Euroa A grade cricketers travelled to Kyabram for Day two of the Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield.

After a tumultuous day the previous week where the opposition posted 4/407, the magpies were in for a big day.

On a picturesque Saturday afternoon at Kyabram, officials produced a great looking pitch with a beautiful outfield.

Chasing 408 for victory, Euroa pair Vaughan Kirk and Scott Hamilton opened the batting for the hosts.

Captain Scott Hamilton was dismissed for a golden duck.

This dismissal brought Nic Hill to the crease.

Kirk and Hill steadied the ship for the visitors with a solid partnership.

After Kirk was dismissed, the wickets fell at regular intervals for the visitors.

After 44.5 overs, the magpies were dismissed for 106.

Forced to follow on with 35 overs left in the day, the magpies started well with Declan Redfern and Vaughan Kirk opening the batting for the second dig.

Again, the wickets fell at regular intervals.

At the close of play, the magpies avoided outright defeat posting 5/84.

Walter Jackson performed well with a solid 30 batting at number three.

Round 6 sees the second two-day game in this year’s Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield. Euroa play host to Old Students with both teams looking to improve on recent performances.

By JOHN BRODIE THE return of two day cricket saw Euroa host Kyabram at the Friendlies.

After winning the toss and batting, Euroa were soon in trouble with the loss of two quick wickets.

Dion Grant (29) and Lachie Cook (13) looked to be steadying the Euroa innings, however, their departure saw another collapse as Euroa were bowled out for 79.

Any early breakthrough with the ball had Euroa looking to get themselves back in the game, before

a strong partnership by Kyabram saw them pass Euroa’s 1st innings score.

Dion Grant was also strong with the ball (3/22) as Euroa bowled tightly for the majority of the innings, however some late hitting saw Kyabram declare at 7/171.

Leaving Euroa to bat a tricky eight overs to finish day one.

Unfortunately for Euroa those eight overs saw the loss of both openers, and a task ahead of Euroa coming into day two.

The second day saw a much improved performance with the bat by Euroa.

Led by a controlled and calm innings by Marc Hornby (47) who, despite a hamstring injury, showed the determination required to succeed in senior cricket.

Justin Dimond (25) supported Hornby well, as all batsman fought hard and placed great value on their wickets.

The 67th over saw Euroa bowled out for 153, leaving Kyabram chasing 62 in 20 overs of play.

Euroa’s bowlers came out positively, led by Archie (1/12) and Ollie Wilson, before Jack Walters was able to strike twice.

Despite the bowlers troubling Kyabram throughout

the chase, they were able to find the runs in the 15th over to complete their victory.

A fine effort by all Euroa players, an effort that they will now look to build upon when they travel to Kialla to challenge Old Students next week.

By TIM JACKSON ON Friday night saw the conclusion of the game between Euroa and Central Park St Brendan’s at a change of venue Central Park Shepparton East with Deakin Reserve been vandalised during the week.

The ground was lightening fast and a hard dry pitch and Euroa lads missing their spiritual leader Jai McMillian being a late withdrawal, took to the field to defend their 194 runs scored the week before.

Euroa’s opening bowling attack spear headed by Ollie Wilson and Cooper Goodall rolled their sleeves up and took to the task with both lads taking a early wicket each.

At drinks after the 15 over mark, Central Park 2 – 51.

The second session of play saw Central Park St Brendan’s really apply the blow torch to the Euroa Lads scoring all-round the ground with Gus Byrne been a proper thorn in the side of Euroa.

Gus Byrne heritage coming from Magpie territory negotiations are already underway to return him to the Euroa set up.

At the second drinks break after 30 overs 5 – 134.

Wicket takers in this session were Leo Murphy with two and Eddie Waghorn with one.

The last of play remaining was going to see a tight tussle, both sides being evenly matched, 60 runs still to defend, five wickets in hand, run rate four runs per over.

With runs and wickets been peeled off at a regular interval it was high pressure cricket from both sides.

Central Park St Brendan’s passed Euroa’s score with eight wickets down at the 43 over mark.

A Day of Community and Fun for everyone at the Shadforth Mile

By JARED BYRNE WE had an absolutely stunning morning on Sunday November 19 for the inaugural “Shadforth Mile” at Shadforth Reserve in Violet Town.

The local community and friends came together for a morning of active enjoyment.

Hosted by the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club and the Shadforth Reserve committee of management (special mention to Keri Jennings), with support from the Shire of Strathbogie and the Lions club, the event showcased a fun blend of competitive spirit and light hearted camaraderie.

The day commenced with the Junior 200m Dash and a burst of youthful energy as kids sprinted towards the finish line.

The junior dash was followed by the one mile run (the Shadforth Mile), and the morning was rounded out with an egg and spoon race, and three-legged race.

Violet Town’s own junior athlete Piper Carracher stole the spotlight, as she claimed victory in the 200m dash and the egg and spoon race, while also securing a third place in the three-legged race alongside her mum.

Well done Piper.

The main event, the Shadforth Mile, was kicked off in grand style by the local fire brigade, with lights and sirens replacing a starters pistol.

Participants of all ages and fitness levels circled the track, showing the community’s commitment to health and wellbeing (and just getting involved and having a crack!).

The inaugural Shadforth Mile was won by Violet Town local Lachie Sands, who currently attends university in Canberra, but returns home during breaks.

Sands clocked an impressive time of 6:53.

Bonnie Morris from Yarra Ranges Athletics Club secured the second spot, making the drive up to Violet Town for the run.

The festivities extended beyond the track with a free barbecue put on by the Lions club plus pancakes made by Hank from the Shadforth Reserve Committee of Management (SRCM).

not only have the grounds around the clubhouse in great condition, but have also spent months getting the mile long track in fantastic condition for the event.

All in all it was a great morning of community spirit, and a celebration of coming together, connecting, and fostering a sense of belonging within our vibrant local town.
