Crime rate falls

NEW data released by the Criminal Statistics Agency (CSA) has shown a slight decline in total criminal incidents for the Strathbogie Shire, although the total offences committed in the region has skyrocketed.

The statistics cover the year ending March 31, 2022 and include summaries of criminal incidents, offences committed, offender incidents, victim reports and family violence.

After 453 criminal incidents in 2021, this year

saw a 1.5 per cent decrease to 446 incidents.

Of these 446 incidents, 135 occurred in Nagambie, 125 in Euroa, 30 in Violet Town, 30 in Avenel and 17 in Miepoll.

While most other towns in the region saw a decrease in total incidents, Euroa saw their incidents increase after only having 91 registered last year.

The amount of cases recorded in the shire still sits heavily below the state average.

For criminal incidents per 100,000 people (per capita), the state average is 5142.2.

In the Strathbogie Shire, this number is 3943.8.

For total offences recorded, the data was less pleasing.

The amount recorded in 2022 rose by 21.4 per cent to a total of 710 total offences.

This amount last year was only 585.

This data also highlighted a significant rise of family violence orders being

breached, by far the most prominent offence recorded.

The number of breaches rose to 229 this year after only 68 were recorded in 2021.

Of the 710 offences, 235 of these were committed in Nagambie, 167 in Euroa, 49 in Longwood East, 39 in Avenel and 35 in Violet Town.

The data does recognise a state-wide decrease in crime over the past 12 months.

The rate of recorded offences decreased 11.9 per

cent to 7048.2 per capita in the last 12 months, as did the number of offences, down 11.5 per cent to 470,405.

The criminal incident rate decreased 11.5 per cent to 5142.2 per capita, as did the number of incidents, down 11.2 per cent to 343,194 incidents.

Alleged offender incidents decreased 18.3 per cent to 161,270 in the last 12 months, as did the rate down 18.6 per cent to 2744.9 per 100,000.

Sunshine platform upgrade needed says Tania Maxwell

By STEVE KELLY NORTHERN Victoria MP Tania Maxwell has told parliament that failure to upgrade the Sunshine train station to accommodate a standard gauge platform will hinder North East travellers in seeking a more direct route to medical appointments in Melbourne.

On behalf of the Border Rail Action Group Ms Maxwell posed the question to Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan.

“The Rail Futures Institute recently reported that the failure to reinstate the former standard gauge platform as part of the forthcoming Sunshine station redevelopment will seriously disadvantage north-east Victorian and Riverina travellers,” Ms Maxwell said.

“Many country people rely on trains to bring them to the city for essential medical services.

“Inability for regional passengers to access Metro 1 from the Sunshine station will effectively cut off access to the new Parkville station and the many major hospitals nearby, including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Children’s Hospital.

Council discusses hardships for property owners

“So my question is to the minister: will the government commit to reinstating the former standard gauge platform at Sunshine station for better access to services for regional passengers, especially North East Victorians who need to visit vital medical facilities?”

There was conjecture in March over the station being omitted from plans to upgrade the station through recommendations by the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

Instead, all trains from the North East line stop at

Broadmeadows where there is a SmartBus connection direct to the airport and this will continue to be the case after 2029 when Melbourne Airport Rail is complete.

At the time, the State Government said providing a standard gauge platform at Sunshine would be accessed by very few passengers, be very expensive and become completely redundant in the future.

“Only a small number of Albury/Sydney XPT passenger services currently travel through Sunshine and do not stop,” a spokesperson said.

“The majority of scheduled North East passenger services from Shepparton/Seymour around 260 a week - travel via Essendon and the Craigieburn line.”

THE Strathbogie Shire Council has outlined the strategies they have in place to accommodate property owners who may be struggling to pay their rates.

This follows last week’s discussion about the Victorian Labor Government’s new legislation that aims to support ratepayers by ensuring councils implement fairer financial hardship policies.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks discussed how property owners in the region can be assisted.

“Strathbogie Shire ratepayers can pay their annual rate charges in four instalments, ensuring that they are not faced with a large lump sum annually,” Cr Binks said.

“Council accepts partial rate payments or payments in advance at any time so residents can take care of their rate payments during a time when it is financially convenient.

“Where ratepayers are encountering difficulties, they are encouraged to contact council to discuss making

payment arrangements.

“When the owner or occupant who is responsible for the rate payments holds a current Centrelink or Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Pension Concession card, DVA Gold card - Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) and/or DVA Gold card they are eligible for a rates concession.

“An application for a concession form can be obtained by contacting Customer Service on 1800 065 993 (toll free), info@strathbogie.vic. gov.au or by visiting www. strathbogie.vic.gov.au.”

Cr Binks also acknowledged the many hardships that residents in the shire may be going through, providing information on some services that can assist the community.

“Council understands that our community has been experiencing a time of ongoing financial hardship, compounded by the pressures of the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing economic difficulties as a result,” Cr Binks said.

“We encourage our resi-

dents who may be experiencing financial difficulties to access some of the local support services available.

“The graph shows at end of March, 2022 outstanding rates were at $6.61 million compared to $6.58 million at the same time last year although this does not reflect the recent payment instalments received in May,” Cr Binks said.

Independent MPs learning from Dr Haines’ experience

ewly elected federal Independent MPs Dr Monique Ryan and Kate Chaney were in Wangaratta last Wednesday to receive mentorship from re-elected Indi MP and “leader of the pack” Helen Haines.

Dr Ryan said the success of Dr Haines and her predecessor Cathy McGowan as Independents in Indi gave her the model for how to succeed in her own electorate of Kooyong, ousting federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the May election.

“She (Ms McGowan) has inspired the voices of groups in so many electorates around Australia and that was the case in Kooyong,” she said.

“Cathy’s the godmother and Helen is the current leader of the pack, so we’re all benefiting from their experience and knowledge.”

Ms Chaney, who came from her electorate in Curtin, Western Australia for the tutorage of Dr Haines, said the way the Indi Independents were able to connect with the community inspired her to achieve the same for her electorate.

“It’s been fantastic, really great to hear from someone who has done this successfully and to hear how you retain your connection with community when running an electoral office,” she said.

“Seeing the story here in Indi made it apparent that it is possible to have some impact as an Independent.”

Dr Ryan said being an Independent MP can bring its challenges without the party structure behind her, and learning from Dr Haines has been rewarding as she looks forward to carrying out the responsibility of paying it forward to the next MPs who find themselves in a similar position.

“We're starting from the beginning, we don't have any staff, don't have an office, we don’t know how to organise things,” she said.

“So support from someone like Helen who has been through it, has the experience, has the knowledge and a fan-

“The job for us in three years time is to pass that on to the next group of people doing similar sorts of things in other electorates.”

Current energy shortages around the country have both MPs understanding the difficulty involved around negotiating a solution, but they would like to see the new Labor government bring a changed approach from the former Coalition government.

“The reality is we have heaps of gas that we’re selling overseas cheaply when Australians are struggling to access the supplies that they need at a vastly increased cost,” she said.

“That’s something that the current government has inherited as a legacy from the previous government which is really disappointing, but I think they are doing their best to negotiate it.”

Ms Chaney is impressed with the improved cooperation between the federal and state energy ministers but doesn’t want the present issues to interfere with Australia’s long term energy goals.

“I hope that they can find an appropriate path through the short-term issue that we’re facing without losing focus of the long-term transitions into renewable energy,” she said.

ast Wednesday afternoon the Australian Energy Market Operator suspended spot marketing in all regions of the national electricity market, in order to simplify the tracking of energy generators.

Dr Haines said in a statement that while the move to suspend the spot market was necessary, it was brought upon by the “neglect” of the energy market by the previous government.

“Households and businesses are literally paying the price of the lack of action to address the transition away from fossil fuels to clean renewable energy,” she said.

“This is why two years ago I put forward a detailed proposal to the federal government to invest in locally-owned renewables and community batteries to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and give everyday people more control over their energy.”

Dr Haines has also been leading the charge for a federal integrity commission and has reached out to AttorneyGeneral Mark Dreyfus to be

part of the process.

A spokesperson for Mr Dreyfus said the current government intends to form an integrity commission by the end of the year and is open to the prospect of Dr Haines being a part of that select committee.

“There will be some form of committee process, but that is yet to be finalised,” the spokesperson said.

“However, Mr Dreyfus has assured Helen Haines that she will be closely involved in the process of legislating for a National Anti-Corruption Commission.”

In terms of current action for the Kooyong and Curtin MPs, it’s all about setting themselves up with what they have learned from Dr Haines before beginning in parliament.

“At this stage we are just picking up the keys to our offices,” Ms Chaney said.

And Dr Ryan looks forward to working with Dr Haines in the future.

“We’ll continue to benefit from Helen’s experience,” she said.

The initiative will see our planners hitting the road and making themselves available in townships across the municipality to offer advice and information and seek feedback on the current Planning Scheme Review.

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council rural outreach worker Brian Hill is encouraging those in need to reach out to link up with local support services.

After joining the council in the role last year, Mr Hill has attended several outreach events, regularly visits the Euroa cattle sales as well as popping up in other areas across the shire.

Mr Hill recently attended the first-time parent groups and the outreach community forum in Euroa as events ramp up following on from COVID-19.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks encouraged people to reach out and get in touch to be referred for Mr Hill’s services.

“We encourage anyone who feels like they may need some support to seek help through our rural outreach worker Brian Hill,” Cr Binks said.

“Brian provides a valuable link between rural community members and various support services and agencies so you can get

that rural men do not often seek out preventative health measures so this is a fantastic way to check in on your health to make sure you can continue to strive and work in a rural setting.

“You can also find out tips on how to improve your health outcomes, learn how to keep you and your family safe and obtain suitable personal protective equipment.”

Have your say on economic strategy LOCAL businesses are being encouraged to attend a workshop to provide their input into Strathbogie Shire Council’s ‘economic development strategy’ for the next four years.

The strategy aims to encourage economic growth in the Shire and will outline a clear economic focus for the key townships.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the strategy would fulfil council’s aspirations for a vibrant and prosperous community that offers businesses a broad range of highly rewarding opportunities for work and investment.

“Our economic development strategy will show how we can continue to build our economy, while attracting and retaining jobs for current and future generations,” Cr Binks said.

“Our aim is to create thriving townships that are strong, adaptable and sustainable.”

She said the strategy would consider the economic and demographic trends and macroeconomic influences that are impacting the local and regional economy.

“The information in the strategy is informed by independent research and analysis, as well as consultation with representatives of community groups, organisations, businesses and Government stakeholders,” she said.

“Amicable” election praised Haines invites health and aged g care ministers to the Indi electorate to realise needs

By STEVE KELLY A DECLARATION of the polls yesterday officially named Helen Haines the winner of the 2022 Federal Election for Indi after she claimed a resounding victory by 17,981 votes over the Liberal candidate Ross Lyman in the twocandidate preferred (TCP).

Under the TCP it was a 7.46 per cent swing in favour of Dr Haines who accumulated 59,771 votes to Mr Lyman’s 41,790, and in the first preference count it was Haines with 41,321 votes against Lyman’s 30,990.

Australian Electoral Commission returning officer Jenny Essex made the declaration of the polls at the electorate headquarters last week.

Ms Essex made note that it was “peaceful and amicable” around polling places this election and she thanked her staff for their efforts with prepolling, polling booths and post-election activities.

Dr Haines said she was “thrilled and excited” to be returning as the MP for Indi and described it as “an enormous privilege” and one she takes with great seriousness and sincerity.

In accepting the win, Dr Haines spoke of a more challenging election process than “perhaps in any other time in our history” and thanked Ms Essex and her team for their “expertise, grace and good will”.

She acknowledged Mr Lyman for the way he conducted himself throughout the campaign and expressed her commiserations to him and all the other candidates.

“It’s not an easy thing to run for a seat in the Federal Parliament, it’s a very big undertaking and candidates don’t do that alone,” she said.

“They do that with the support of a very wide team of volunteers and helpers throughout what was a long

period of time, so I acknowledge those people too and the way they conducted themselves throughout the electoral process.”

Mr Lyman congratulated Dr Haines and he thanked his supporters for their work throughout the campaign.

He turned his focus to the state election saying he will be there to support Coalition MPs Bill Tilley, Cindy McLeish, Tim McCurdy and Steph Ryan.

In her first week after the election, Dr Haines wrote to Labor Minister for Health Mark Butler and Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells, inviting them to the region to see firsthand what’s required to fix the strained health system.

She talked about the chronic workforce shortages across the health system, trying to deal with a backlog of patients, compounded by the pandemic restrictions and staff illnesses.

Dr Haines cited some fundamental responsibilities of the Federal Government as aged care and mental health and funding that is desperately needed for a new AlburyWodonga hospital.

“Federal governments have funded new hospitals in the past and we saw an election promise from the Labor Party for a new hospital in South Australia,” she said.

“I’m going for that in the same way I went for the Coalition, I’ll be working and fighting just as hard with Labor to make sure they fulfil their responsibilities around health care here.”

She also wrote to Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells outlining what’s needed in Indi and mentioned Bright as a priority which needs a high care residential aged care facility.

“I have been campaigning a lot on that for a long time and I outlined to her what we need, all of the work I have done thus far and have invited her to meet with me about that,” she said.

Dr Haines also wrote to the respective ministers for Climate Change and Agriculture some of her ideas around energy use, and bushfire recovery, respectively.

HAVING returned from an exciting journey on the 60th anniversary tour on the Southern Aurora train, Bruce Cumming and Charlie Mead were able to discuss the experience last week.

The two of them have a longstanding friendship and connection to the railways and the region.

Mr Cumming is part of the committee for the Southern Aurora Memorial in Violet Town and has had a big hand in keeping the history of the train and the standard gauge alive in the region.

Mr Mead, who worked for over 30 years on the railways, is a popular figure amongst those in the industry and was thrilled to be a part of the anniversary.

“It was just fantastic,” Mr Mead said.

“It was one of the most marvellous trips I’ve ever done.

“I was very well rewarded; it was so nice after a long time working on the rail to have that experience.

The two were joined by several others on the trip down to Melbourne, with Mr Mead then taking a return trip on the train without the rest of the group.

“I was so proud of those that

MEMBERS of the Euroa Golf Club are very proud of improvements to their clubhouse that have been carried out over the past few years.

The finishing touch has been the recent addition of new carpet in the main room which improves the safety and ambiance of the venue for members and visitors.

This was made possible due to a kick-start of a $1000 grant from the Strathbogie Shire’s Small Grants Program.

“The grant motivated members to get creative and think of ways to raise the extra funds to pay for the carpet upgrade,” club president Andrew Steen said.

“Money raised from raffles and the proceeds of the early bird golf program were directed into the ‘carpet fund’ and the total cost was covered relatively quickly.

Offences have a sharp increase in region ■

Family incidents decreased 2.4 per cent in the last 12 months, with 90,794

incidents recorded across Victoria.

The rate of family incidents also decreased, down 2.7 per cent to 1360.4 incidents per capita.

CSA chief statistician Fiona Dowsley discussed some of the data across the state.

“Changes to COVID-19 responses have resulted in fewer breaches of chief

health officer direction offences, driving key crime measures down in the last 12 months, “she said.

“Decreases in acquisitive crime such as thefts and deception have also contributed to decreases in key crime measures, following trends seen throughout the pandemic period.”

Garden club to take break over winter THE Euroa Garden Club recently held their May meeting at the home of June and Ian Lewis.

It was a perfect autumn day with plenty of sunshine to show off the remaining autumn leaves and the early camellias and perennials.

A shared afternoon tea was enjoyed by all, so much nicer than a thermos and biscuit.

It has been decided by the members of the club to not hold any meetings during the

cold, wet winter.

The garden club will next meet on Friday, September 16 with the venue yet to be decided.

School holiday fun for youth CHILDREN and youth across the Strathbogie Shire will get the opportunity to take part in a jampacked school holiday activity program.

The program will feature free and discounted movie screenings at the Euroa Community Cinema and Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks encouraged all young people to attend.

“We are so excited to offer three free movies and two films with discounted school holiday ticket prices at the Euroa Community Cinema,” Cr Binks said.

“The upcoming free films for the shire’s youth are Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (M), The Lost City (M) and Jurassic World - Dominion (M).

“We are incredibly excited to bring these recent releases to our youth for free and we hope they enjoy getting back into the Euroa Community Cinema following our recent refurbishments thanks to Victorian Government funding.”

There will also be two children’s films shown during the school holidays with tickets priced at $5 (children under school age are free of charge).

Police operation picks up several arrests on long weekend OVER the Queen’s Birthday long weekend police were out in force for Operation Regal, a state-wide road policing operation conducted from Friday, June 10 to Monday, June 13.

Operation Regal was conducted throughout all operational police regions and police service areas (PSAs), using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources.

THE Euroa Library continues to provide a space for local artists, with several pieces of embroidery created by Euroa resident Gabriel Robyn Kearle currently on display.

Ms Kearle begun embroidering when she was in high school, but has continued to hone her craft following a stint with the Hobart Embroiderer’s Guild.

With a variety of different styles being shown, including stumpwork, goldwork, Brazilian embroidery and more, the library walls are covered with beautiful pieces of art for all to see.

Having lived in Euroa for about 6 years, Ms Kearle has been enjoying her time in town.

“I love it here, it’s lovely,” she said.

“I am originally from Victoria so after Hobart it was a great place to move.”

When it comes to her style, Ms Kearle outlined some of her favourite methods.

“I’ve basically just experimented with different styles of embroidery,” she said.

“My favourites are definitely the stumpwork and the goldwork, they’re the styles that I absolutely love.

Flu cases on rise 20 cases confi firmed, d numbers b iincrease iin St Strathbogie thb i Shi Shire

By GUS RIDDER CONFIRMED cases of influenza (the flu) in the Strathbogie Shire so far this year are at 20, a steady increase compared to previous years.

Strathbogie Shire has had 20 year to date (YTD) cases compared to zero in 2021, eight in 2020 and 18 in 2019.

The total amount of cases in 2019 ended up being 81, indicating that a similar number could be on the cards in the region for 2022.

The Department of Health advises that due to COVID it is likely more people are getting tested for influenza than previous years (instead of just assuming it’s the flu and resting up at home).

A department spokesperson said with restrictions including lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 less people were moving around or going overseas, and along with COVID-safe measures, including wearing masks and physical distancing, the spread of the influenza virus would have lessened in those years.

YTD statistics across the North East include the Alpine Shire where there have been 48 cases confirmed so far, compared to zero in

HEALTH must remain a key focus of future state budgets to reduce the divide between regional and metropolitan health services, according to state member for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell.

After requesting the Parliamentary Budget Office investigate a split of asset funding which allegedly left regional Victorians 11 per cent worse off than their metropolitan counterparts last year, Ms Maxwell said regional Victorians deserved a much improved healthcare system.

This year’s state budget promised a $12b spend to provide an additional 7000 healthcare workers across the state, provide additional paramedics and improve surgical capacity across Victoria.

“The people that work within the system give it their all, with great compassion and care each and every day,” Ms Maxwell said.

“But we have shortages across the board - and it is not a new story.

“However, it is one that is getting more pronounced - from GPs to allied and community health, ambulances, hospitals, mental health

support and aged care.

“If the budget is about health, which was the government pitch, I think the next one and the one after that will need to be as well, until our system is back on a better footing.”

In calling for more accountability for funding provisions in regional Victoria in parliament last week, Ms Maxwell suggested a regional impact statement accompany future budget papers to provide comparisons for regional taxpayers.

“There seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors in this budget with some big figures touted, but the fine detail raises questions about what has been expended or represents co-funding which has been listed in one area but cut from another,” she said.

“There is no doubt that the nature of geography and topography often makes the claim for regional areas needing more, not less.”

Wodonga-based Liberal Democrat MP Tim Quilty said he opposed the budget outcome, questioning a spending commitment which had risen 31 per cent from prepandemic levels.

No puppy love for fast Porsche driver A MAN on his way to collect a new puppy has had his car impounded after he was caught driving more than 190kph in Violet Town Saturday.

Police were called following reports a red Porsche was seen speeding north bound on the Hume Freeway, in the vicinity of Violet Town, about 3.40pm.

Officers attended and pulled

over the motorist after he was detected travelling 195kph in a 110kph zone just north of Benalla.

Push ups raising huge funds for mental health

THE local ‘Push for Better’ campaign is continuing to raise money for mental health awareness with their push-up challenge.

The COVID pandemic crisis has shown that many people young and old are not coping with mental illness, isolation, illness, depression, vaccination and lockdown restrictions, financial problems, lack of employment, eating disorders and addictions.

Younger ones have also struggled with home learning, lack of socialising, bullying of social media with other young ones and many more issues.

The Push for Better campaign aims to raise awareness and much needed funds for mental health charities Lifeline and Movember.

Hannah Tuckett of Nagambie, joint owner with Travis Hausler of the Burkes Bakery in Binney Street in Euroa, discussed the challenge.

“I took the challenge on after seeing it advertised on Facebook,” she said.

“This was also after losing my younger brother Sam to suicide in February 2021.

“The aim was to complete 3318 push ups in 25 days.

“3318 is the number of people who took their lives in 2019, two thirds of that number were men.

“I managed to raise just under $9000 and was nominated at the Community Achievement Awards as a Community

Excitement surrounds cup weekend Heritage Day THE Strathbogie Tableland History Group are preparing for an upcoming Heritage Day, an event that is sure to be full of fun, community spirit and informative information.

The Heritage Day has been in the pipeline for years, beginning when the history group received a shire grant in 2019 for a digital scanner.

This led to an archiving day and a collection of documentation, old photos of the region and plans for a heritage trail.

The group’s president, Lisa Duggan, explained some of the background

behind the event and what they are trying to achieve.

“We’ll be launching our heritage trail in Strathbogie,” she said.

“We received a state grant to install 11 interpretive panels for the heritage trail - some buildings are still there, some aren’t.

“The event will be held over Melbourne Cup Day weekend on Sunday, October 30.”

There is tangible excitement about the upcoming event, particularly as the launch of the trail will coincide with the 120th anniversary of St Andrews Church and the 100th anniversary of the general store.

“We’ve decided to turn it into a whole day,” Ms Duggan said.

“We’ll walk around the 11 sites and we plan to have a direct descendent at the unveiling of each site.

“We’ll have historical collections on display at St Andrews.

“In the hall, we’ll keep a constantly scrolling on a projector in the hall, showing off all the photos we collected.

“The event keeps growing.”

Current plans are for the event to be held at 10.30am on October 30.

More details are expected to come out sooner to the date.

THE Violet Town Football Netball Club will kick goals both on and off the football field during a special charity round for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund on Sunday, June 26.

Football and netball players in all grades will wear bright pink socks for Terry Socks it to Cancer, inspired by former Towners’ player and coach, Terry Greaves, who is receiving treatment for metastatic melanoma.

Donations will also be collected from supporters at the game.

Football manager, Gary Abley, said the club was proud to get behind the cause to help raise money and awareness for local cancer services.

“Players and supporters are encouraged to dig deep and support a cause close to the heart of the club, which has not only affected Terry and his family, but many lives of players, supporters and volunteers of our great club,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to the hosting Undera and hopefully get people talking about the cancer centre and the reason behind the pink socks.”

Mr Greaves, of Markwood, was first diagnosed with cancer 15 years ago, and experienced the challenges of having to travel long distances to receive treatment in Melbourne.

Virus toll climbs by 106 over weekend AUSTRALIA’S coronavirusrelated death toll continues to rise, with more than 100 fatalities announced over the weekend including 48 in Victoria.

More than 47,000 new infections have also been recorded since Thursday.

There are presently more than 212,000 active COVID-19 cases across the country, with nearly 2900 patients in hospital care.

Reporting of the latest pandemic data follows the federal government signing

off on an extra $760 million to help states and territories fight the virus.

The existing commonwealth-states funding deal was set to expire in September but was extended on Friday by three months.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the pandemic “clearly isn’t over yet and it would be very brave to suggest that you can make that projection”.

Meanwhile, a new study points to ongoing brain fog and memory loss in long

COVID patients with no improvement even after a year.

The Adapting to Pandemic Threats (ADAPT) research reveals nine in 10 long COVID sufferers were not taken to hospital when they originally caught the virus.

Experts say there is a “common misconception” that only people who have felt the full force of the virus develop long COVID. St Vincent’s Hospital’s Professor Bruce Brew believes it may take another year to see an improvement

in long COVID patients.

“The impact of long COVID on some is significant,” he said.

“I had one patient, a businessman who had to sell his business because he could no longer focus on contracts and negotiations during meetings.”

Steven Faux, who runs the long COVID clinic at St Vincent’s, is seeing up to 10 new patients each week, with many younger people finding it difficult to continue working.

Wage growth is not fuelling inflation: Burke EMPLOYMENT Minister Tony Burke does not believe wages growth is about to further fuel inflation, saying pay rates have suffered a decade of stagnation.

Last week the Fair Work Commission endorsed a 5.2 per cent increase for low-paid workers, roughly in line with the current rate of inflation, although the Reserve Bank of Australia now expects it to hit seven per cent this year.

“Inflation is not being driven by high wage growth,” Mr Burke told Sky News’ Sunday Agenda program.

“We don’t have high wage growth.

“The wage price index has been running at 2.4 (per cent) at the same time that inflation was coming in at 5.1 (per cent).”

Mr Burke said some of the drivers of inflation are international, some of them are from previous government neglect.

He also confirmed the previous government’s revamped Job Active plan will go ahead from July 1 as planned, although Labor intends to make changes to the new points-based system.

Mr Burke wants the automated messages telling people they might be going to lose their benefits stopped, saying it is a reminder of the controversial but now defunct Robodebt scheme.

“I’d like to stop them, reframe them,” he said.

“The other thing is the system (is) not just complex, but there’s some anomalies in what they’ve done that I find really weird.”

He said someone doing a fulltime course to get job ready won’t get sufficient points under the system, so they are still having to

Local government to converge on Canberra ALMOST a thousand mayors and councillors from around Australia are headed to the nation’s capital for the annual national assembly of local government.

The three-day gathering, which starts in Canberra on Monday, comes at a time of renewed focus on the ability of the third tier of government to deliver for the communities it represents.

While the country’s 537 councils are committed to facilitating affordable housing, fewer emissions, better health and reduced costof-living pressures, many

are dealing with a revenue crisis, the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) said.

COVID, natural disaster impacts and caps on sources of income were all blamed for the lack of financial security.

As a result, some councils had to contemplate service cuts and facility closures, and avoiding this would be the key focus of the event, the association said.

ALGA president Linda Scott said motions passed at last year’s national assembly underpinned the association’s advocacy in the leadup to the federal election.

“I am pleased to report that, working together to advocate to all parties and candidates, we were able to secure major funding and policy commitments that will support every Australian community,” she said.

Reinstating local government representation to national cabinet was among the association’s most prominent recent achievements, Ms Scott said.

This year’s delegates will hear from Governor-General David Hurley, Infrastructure Minister Catherine King and Agriculture Minister Murray Watt.

Calls for end to armed police in remote NT PROTESTERS across the country have demanded an end to armed police in remote Indigenous communities.

Saturday’s marches follow the March murder acquittal of Northern Territory police officer Zachary Role after he fatally shot Aboriginal teenager Kumanjayi Walker, who was armed with scissors.

Ahead of the protests, Warlpiri elder Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves, from the remote Top End town of Yuendumu where Mr Walker died, said police with guns only caused fear.

“We cannot accept that anymore. We don’t want

to feel terrified in our own ngurra, our own home,” he said.

Unions and other Indigenous leaders have backed the marches, with the Australian Services Union’s South Australia and Northern Territory branch pointing to the numbers of Aboriginal deaths in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission.

“Over 500 First Nations people have died in custody since then,” the union said.

The “ceasefire” being called for by protesters would include defunding Northern Territory police, redirecting their funding to

community-based services and demands for Mr Rolfe to face “customary law” in Yuendumu.

Elders also demanded an end to any lingering powers from the 2007 Northern Territory intervention.

“This is not only for Warlpiri people, this is for everyone. For all our First Nations peoples, our warrmala, it is time for us to stand together,” Mr Hargraves said.

Marches were held from Sydney to Perth, with protesters on Friday blockading a Brisbane facility that supplies guns to NT police.

Free workshop series for community groups STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is hosting a series of free workshops to assist community groups in building their skills.

The Community Capacity Building Workshops will be held online covering two topics across four workshops.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the first workshop ‘Valuing Our Volunteers’ would provide a simple framework for bestpractice volunteer management and support.

“We want to support community groups, so their volunteers have a great experience working with them, and they get the best from their volunteers,” Cr Binks said.

“The session will cover how to recruit the best people to do the

best job for your organisation, the essentials of supporting your volunteers to be their best and best-practice people management for working with volunteers.”

Cr Binks said the second topic ‘Fundraising 101’ would focus on a simple step-by-step approach to strategically fundraising organisations.

“This session covers how to assess your needs, and the best approaches to fundraising, how to develop an effective fundraising plan to help you move forward and where to go if you need further help to find funding,” Cr Binks said.

There will be a day and evening session for both topics at the end of this month.

By ROB BROWNLEE GOLF on Tuesday, June 15was a non-event due to the Cold, wet conditions, but that didn’t deter two unnamed visitors from Euroa brave the elements and had a round.

Stableford was played on Saturday, June 18 with 18 men and seven ladies playing in ideal conditions, which reflected the good scores.

Visitors joined us from Euroa, Sandringham, and Murchison.

Also one of our past captains Barney Robertson ventured up the Hill for his first game since 2013, talk about an expensive round, estimated at over$2000 in fees.

Ladies winner was Mellissa Eddy from Euroa with 31 points.

Men’s winner was our Captain John Moore with 39 points on a countback from Dick Farmer whose round could have been better as he wiped his first two holes, also Greg Roberts won a lineball with 32 points, Gary Hewlett and Paddy McCarthy each got a

ball with 32 points.

Nearest the pins: 4th was won by Dick Farmer, 8th John Moore, 15th Dick Farmer, 17th Paddy McCarthy.

Straightest drive was Wally Dunn.

Ladies drive and pitch went to Fran Kearney.

Men’s drive and pitch was won by Chris Bennett.

Rylie Mc Donald represented the club playing in the Par Three Championship at Parklands Kyabram, he finished second in the scratch after two rounds, 12th out of 80 and 6th in the stableford section but won the best 18 hole score for round two.

A great effort overall, congratulations.

Golf next Saturday, June 15 is stableford with Eleanor Barns looking after proceedings.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB A BREAK in the weather with the sun shining for the first time in weeks for the Sunday competition at Nagambie, where 25 golfers teed it up for a Par event was very welcome.

It was once again a day for the bombers with the course needing all carry

to put together a score, the winner for the second time in a month was Jeremy Ezard with a +3, the soft conditions allowing the Nagambie club champion to attack the flags all day.

Runner up went to Chris Bence with +2 another good result with a win looking likely in the near future, rounding out the top three was “master blaster’ Michael Sloan with a +1.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Des Phelan slashing at one to reach the eighth, Chris Bence adding to an already good day on the 13th and Shaun Bryant the clear weather golfer getting lucky on the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be a stableford event with J. Ezard on office duty and M. Mensfeld in the bar.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB COOL conditions greeted the juniors on Saturday morning, however there was some great golf played nonetheless.

Lachie O’Brien had an excellent round, including a birdie and a hole out from 30 meters for par which earnt him the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza and Gardens, Play of the Day voucher.

He also claimed the winner’s prize by virtue of a countback from young Kevin Traynor who had his best round yet.

Charlie Lynch played another good round to finish third.

The men’s competition was par off the White tees and it was two juniors stepping up into the senior ranks who stole the show.

Campbell Smith won the $30 voucher with a very tidy +2, just ahead of Hudson Black on +1.

It’s great to see two of our juniors stepping up into the men’s competition and playing so well. Credit must go to Alex Smith for his hard work running

the junior comp and to the parents who so willingly help out.

Lineballs went to Mark Hannigan on square and Dave Fullager -2.

The nearest the pins balls remained with the club, however the Drive and pitch on 11 went to Hudson Black (second in a row on that hole) and the 17th went to the evergreen Tim Batten.

After some lean weeks, the Ladies had enough players for a comp on Saturday and played a stableford round.

Dee Wright claimed the win with 33 points, one ahead of Michelle Thomson (Euroa) on 32 points.

Once again, the NTP ball remained with the club.

The Avenel Meats $100 meat tray was won by Peter Melican.

Big thank you to Mark Hannigan for making a new implement for the scraper and then preparing the sands for this week’s play.

Next week will be June Monthly Medal so we hope to see a good roll up.

Shooters score with super conditions COMPETITION kicked off at 10.30am on Sunday, June 19 at Mansfield clay target club with a field of 34 shooters, making up six squads participating in the annual Highland Shield Teams event, Mansfield v Euroa v Alexandra.

Conditions were ideal with mild sunny weather and no wind.

The four event card commenced with 10 Target Points Score eye opener followed by 30 Target Point score, 30 Target Double Barrel and finally a 20 Target Handicap.

Participating visiting shooters attended from Melbourne, Woods Point, Benalla, Wangaratta, Corowa, Yarrawonga, Colbinabbin, Euroa and Alexandra.

Events three and four were combined over five team members representing each club to compete for the Highland shield.

Mansfield fielded two squads Alexandra and Euroa one each.

Event one was an eye opener cash divide with lots of perfect scores of 30/30 shot across all grades, in the money were AA grade: Andrew Cameron (Melbourne Cricket Club) and Bill Forrest (Mansfield). A grade: Laurie Fitzpatrick (Euroa), Geoff McLure (Alexandra), Marty McLachlan (Mansfield). B Grade: Phil Woods (Yarrawonga) and Al Kidd (Mansfield). C Grade: Kim Thompson (Colbinabbin).

This lead straight into

the point score double barrel event, also a cash divide, but this time with only one clear winner per grade.

AA Grade: Andrew Fiek (MCC). A Grade: Phillip Desmond (Mansfield). B Grade: Jason Foster (Mansfield). C Grade: Stephen Wilson (Mansfield).

After a quick warming lunch of pastries and hot dogs it was into the 30 Target Double Barrel with some outstanding shooting resulting in a shoot-off between six competitors who returned a perfect score.

A further 31 targets were shot by Darryl Hunt (Yarrawonga) and Marty McLachlan (Mansfield) to decide a result with Darryl Victorious.

Grade winners were

second AA: Andrew Cameron 57/58. A Grade: Marty McLachlan 60/61 and Ken Skinner 36/37. B Grade: Jason Foster 33/34 and John King 37/38. C grade: Stephen Wilson 29/30 and David Luelf 30/33.

A delicious afternoon tea was supplied by Ivy Desmond comprising nut loaf and scones, a big thanks to you Ivy. (She has been invited back whenever she chooses).

The day was rounded up with the 20 Target Handicap.

Marty McLachlan was lucky enough to be the only shooter across the line with a perfect score and Darryl

Hunt the only shooter with 19/20.

A further seven competitors hit 18 targets requiring a shoot-off for third, after seven more targets the last man standing was Michael Cecchetto (MCC).

The total score contributing to the outcome of the Highland Shield was tallied from five competitors in each squad.

The Mansfield team made up of Bill Forrest, Marty McLachlan, Phillip Desmond, David Luelf and Ken Skinner took the shield over the other three squads with a score of 224 out of a possible 250.

It was a fun day blessed with great weather throughout with all attendees refereeing and gener-

ally helping out to ensure a successful day.

The competition was generously sponsored by Shane Callahan of Callahan Seed.

Mansfield Clay Target Gun hosts competitions the third Sunday of each month, the next monthly program scheduled for Sunday 17th July at 10.30am.

A couple of stand outs were Devin Gordois, Caleb Morrison-Armstrong, Josh Cumberland, Reece Dimech and two young lads in the Ruck gave us first opportunity most of the day Caileb Ilbury and Kobe Galvin.

Murchison this weekend another tough ask for the lads.

RESERVES THE Longwood reserves once again turned up

with a hard at the ball approach, but unfortunately we lacked rotations due to a few players unavailable.

To the boys credit they cracked on all day and had a dip, Josh Dowell had big shoes to fill at full back and he played his best game of the year with best on ground honors. Justin Purdey was again at the bottom of every pack giving out on onball brigade every opportunity.

Benny Grayham was again solid down back as was Luke Allison and Jake Dimech, Mick Hanson was again good in the ruck.

Merrigum were unfortunately to strong, we look forward to meeting ladders leaders Murchison next week.

big test with a few boys out due to illness and a few playing with illness.

Murchison have a pretty even side from forwards to backs.

Our boys worked hard all day, their aggression on the footy was great, and we get another chance next weekend to play them again.

Our better players were Dakota Pellegrino, Luke Allison, and Jack McDonald.

UNDER 13 MORE numbers for Longwood meant that we had to give a few players to even it up. First quarter started off with immediate pressure from Jayden Franklin.

Longwood kicked a few and Jac Roob went and kicked one for Merrigum, Edwin Shiner kicked a couple in the first to put us out to a lead.

Second quarter we had Jac roob kick a few and our defense was strong repelling what was thrown at them and it evened up a bit.

Third quarter Ned Birrell was in and under getting disposals.

Tom Macdermid had enough and tackled hard.

Jazmyn Wilson was strong in defense.

Billy Wilson was racking up disposals and Tom Bennett was unstoppable and busted through tackles.

Cooper Goodall started bombing kicks in the fifty for Edwin Shiner to mark.

Fourth quarter Harry Bennett was up on the wing running up and down.

River Struchbery relished a few opportunities by kicking a goal.

Ended up with another win for the Leggers.

THE highlight for Longwood across the weekend was the powering up of the new “high” lights servicing the new netball court.

It has been a long wait for the floodlights to be activated and it will be welcomed by all involved with the club.

It will allow the Redlegs to continue their significant on-court improvements this season, which has seen A grade record more wins than ever before in the Kyabram District league.

The new lights will mean that all netball sides - senior and junior - will be able to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, rather than the rotational system that has been employed so far.

Onfield and on-court it was a tough slog for the Leggers players predominantly against Merrigum.

The under-13 footballers put in a strong performance to claim a win over the young Bulldogs.

Early in the game the Redlegs were led by great pressure by Jayden Franklin, while Edwin Shiner was able to jag a couple of important goals to establish a lead.

Jac Roob, after slotting a goal for Merrigum in the first quarter, switched back over and hit the scoreboard for the Leggers.

Ned Birrell, in-and-under, Tom Macdermid, tackling hard, Jazmyn Wilson, in defence, were standouts in the second half, along with prolific ballgetter Billy Wilson, contested beast Tom Bennett and the long bomber Cooper Goodall.

Harry Bennett worked hard running up-and-down the wing and River Stutchberry capped a strong performance kicking a goal.

The undermanned under18s took on MurchisonToolamba in a catch-up game, meaning they will face the same opposition two weeks in a row.

The Leggers worked hard across the four quarters, with Dakota Pellegrino, Luke Allison and Jack McDonald the standout performers.

The reserves turned up with a mentality fixed on winning the contest, but were ultimately outran and outclassed.

best performance stepping into the full back position, while Justin Purdey was at the bottom of every pack, Benny Grayham was solid down back aloing with Luke Allison and Jake Dimech.

Mick Hanson was typically reliable in the ruck.

The seniors were again stoic, refusing to throw in the towel until the final siren.

On the netball court, the under-15s played their best game of the season so far.

A competitive scoreline against a strong opponent was reason for enthusiasm for what the rest of the season holds.

Best-on-court was Larni Shiner, moving to defence and combining well with captain Beth Pellegrino some labelling them the new “dream team”.

Coach’s Award went to the rapidly improving Simone O’Connor, who was responsible for 50 per cent of the Leggers score.

The under-17s found the going tough, with Keynan Barnes best-on-court and the Coach’s Award going to Amelia Kearns.

C grade were also pleased to be competitive and gave effort across all four quarters.

The team welcomed back Regina Mann, with best-oncourt Gail Galvin and the Coach’s Award going to Carly Murphy.

This Saturday will see the much anticipated return of the Mid-Season Ball at the Shepparton Greyhound Racing Centre.

Tickets have been released for the Cameron Mooney President’s Luncheon for July 23, with a limited number available through the club’s Facebook page or by contacting the club.

But we fought hard under the circumstances, it was a loss but not a bad loss, we are competitive this year, and we can only get stronger from here.

UNDER 15 THE U15s played their best game of the season so far.

The girls were competitive all game and made Merrigum work for their win.

To only go down by seven goals to a strong opponent in Merrigum, we’re extremely excited for the rest of the

season.

Euroa netballers come out on top GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE THE Euroa A grade girls always knew Saturday was going to be a tough game.

Although Rochester were sitting 9 on the ladder, they had recently pushed the top teams.

The sunny conditions at Memorial Oval were ideal for both teams with their fast-paced games.

Euroa started the game moving the ball really well in the attack end, scoring quickly, but Rochester soon found rhythm and closed the gap and the crowd of spectators knew this was going to be a nail biter.

The second quarter was going goal for goal.

The defensive trio of Bridget Hill, Tylah Marchbank and Sophie Owen were applying good pressure but the extremely accurate goaling of Rochester saw them outscore the Magpies in this quarter.

Euroa started the third quarter with just a two goal lead, but Kellie Davidson and Eliza Hoare were feeding well into the ring and Bree Poole and Karly Walpett making good position and goaling with accuracy which saw Euroa extend the lead to nine goals.

Rochester was not going to lie down, and were applying plenty of pressure to Euroa’s attack end, creating turnovers whilst the Magpie defence were not only making second efforts but third efforts as well to try and force errors.

Despite these efforts, Rochester were still scoring well.

In the end it was Euroa’s patience in working the ball into the goals that saw the Euroa girls finish with a six goal win- a win which will see the team move up the

For the first half they ran with the fourth placed Rochester, putting pressure across all areas of the court.

The Rochester lead got out to five goals in the third quarter, and despite the likes of Katy Frewen playing an incredible game in the defensive circle, the Euroa girls were not able to close the gap before the final siren.

Cass Payne was solid for Euroa in goals, and Millie Watson has a great game in the mid court.

Euroa showed on Saturday that they can run with

the top teams, however will need to continue to work on the consistency required to match these teams for four quarters of netball.

Best players awarded by the coach: Katy Frewen, Cass Payne, Millie Watson Rochester 49 Euroa 44 B RESERVE THE B Reserve girls came out firing on Saturday, finishing up with a hard fought win against the Rochester Tigers, 41 to 36.

Mary Frewen and Alita White were once again strong in defence, assisted by fantastic attacking play in the midfield from Mahoney Fothergill and Caitlin Seeber.

Marnie Burton made a welcome return to Saturday netball and worked the ball up into the ring with great teamwork from Maddi Murray.

It was a great game to

watch with plenty of passion and drive from all the girls.

Euroa 41. Rochester 36 UNDER 17 THE Euroa girls went into Saturday’s game at Memorial Oval fully aware of the challenge that lay before them.

Traditionally very strong in netball, the Rochester game was always going to be a tough one, and at the end of four very long quarters of netball, the final result was indicative of this.

Millie Watson, Chloe Slater and Laura Frewen gave everything they had in the Magpie defence, competing against a very polished and well drilled Rochester attack.

The Magpies did extremely well to get into the right

position, to hustle and deflect, only to be defeated by height.

But did they give up? No, they did not.

Hannah Kubeil, Meg Walker and Lily Meehan had a difficult day in the mid court, their usual free flowing moves somewhat impeded by a tight Rochester unit.

This made the movement of the ball into Euroa’s attack very difficult, however the girls did not give up all day, giving 100% until the final whistle.

Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter had to deal with a close Tiger defence, in a goal ring where opportunities were few and far between.

Constant pressure initially had an impact on shooting accuracy, however it wasn’t very long before both girls were back to

their reliable best.

No one could doubt the effort and desire of the Euroa U17 side on Saturday, but at the end of the day, Rochester were simply too strong.

Best players awarded by the coach: Millie Watson, Sienna Trotter, Hannah Kubeil Rochester 59. Euroa 24 UNDER 15 WITH the entire team unavailable; Oakley in Bali and Tess too sick to take her place in the team, the Euroa girls took to the court with great gusto, leading at the first change 17 goals to 13.

It was a slippery slope from here on in though as the Rochester girls gathered themselves and made clinical decisions and plays throughout the remainder of the match.

Despite the excellent efforts of the likes of Lily Fowler and Scarlett Trotter in defence, the Euroa team were unable to bridge the widening gap between the teams on the scoreboard.

Up forward Issy had her eye in and her quick passing into Ruby, together with the seamless movement of the ball down the court, meant there were passages of play where Euroa was on fire.

Coach Hill emphasised this capacity at each of the breaks and willed her side to execute more of this play.

Marnie found herself in the right position all day, after some great moves to outmanoeuvre her opponent.

The combination of Maggie and Lily in defence was something we haven’t seen too much of this season to date and bought back memories of their Shepparton Association days.

They were zigging and zagging at all the right times.

Junior netballers continue excellent winning streak SHEPPARTON JUNIOR NETBALL COMPETITION EUROA WHITE V ST BRENDAN’S First Quarter THE heavy fog covering the path to Shepparton was no indication of the clear blue skies welcoming the Euroa teams to Shepparton.

Team Euroa was in the safe hands of Therese Thompson, filing in whilst coach Beccy Squires was enjoying a well-earned rest.

Brianna Maher was on the receiving end of some great teamwork, Brianna and Leila Thompson combining well and scoring Euroa’s first four goals.

Adelaide Downie in Centre working hard to ensure Euroa kept possession of the ball.

Second Quarter Daisy Cameron was working overtime, moving well across the court impacting

the game heavily.

Isla Moore moved into Centre and was ensuring the opposition was earning their keep.

Bridie Simpson and Zara Hill intercepting many oppositions passes moving the ball forward.

Breanna Maher and Leila Thompson again scoring for Euroa.

Euroa -8 St Brendan’s- 3 Third Quarter After the half time break and some inspiring words from coach Thompson the team continued to be strong and dominate the game.

In a more evenly matched quarter Euroa continued to score adding two more goals for the quarter. Daisy Cameron was busy on her feet popping up all over the court.

EUROA BLACK V KYABRAM COMETS IT was truly a beautiful winter’s day at the Shepparton netball courts for Euroa’s U11 Magpies match against the Kyabram Comets.

Bright sunshine and a breathless wind made for perfect match conditions.

Unfortunately for the Comets, they stood in the shadows of the clearly taller

and stronger Magpies.

Captain Willow Timperly, from the position of Center, had Euroa heading in the right direction from the start.

Strong quick play had the ball in Euroa’s circle and after a missed shot and then rebound, Grace Eddy (GA) opened the score.

This was then followed by repeated goals by Ellie Robinson (GS).

The Comets where running hard and struck back with two goals of their own.

Grace Hill (GD) was able to complete an excellent rebound, which was then transitioned down the court and converted into a goal.

First quarter 5-2.

Second quarter had Lara Saxon (GD) on the court and helping Grace Hill (GK) firm up the defensive end for the Magpies.

The combination of Willow Timperly (C), Isla Hahnel (WD) and Bethan Burton

(WA) had the Magpies really controlling the center of the court and repelling the Ky Comet’s attacks. Euroa scores three goals and holds Kyabram scoreless for the quarter.

Coach Kim Saxon’s direction at half time was to create more space to enable better drives down the court.

Third quarter had a better tempo right from the start.

Lara was swung into GS and with repeated feeds

by Bethan (C) and Willow T (WA) gave her numerous goals.

A great team effort transition saw the ‘always running’ Maisy Wilson (GD) intercept in defence and pass onto Bethan (C), who threw to Isla in midcourt (WD), who then passed to Willow (WA) who feed a Lara Saxon -Grace Eddy goal circle ‘1-2’ with an instant conversion.

Euroa holds firm with a 5 goals to 1 quarter.

With the game firmly in Euroa’s grip, Coach Kim Saxon goes wild and for the fourth quarter and switches every team position.

Maisy into C, Grace Eddy to GK, Ellie to GD, Grace Hill to GS, Willow to WD, Bethan to WA. Willow Timperly continues to play a great game and gets her hands in the way of many opposition passes.

However, the fast pace of the match was starting to take a toll on the players, resulting in numerous turnovers by both teams.

Yet the Magpies are still able to extend their lead with a solid six to two.

Final score had Euroa 20 and Kyabram 5.

The girls have come a long way since they first walked onto the netball court last year and they are really developing into a solid team.

Twins put on an a goal clinic KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS TWINS Fintan and Nick Brazil took the home side Rushworth apart, a combined 78 possessions and 13 goals by the two was unbelievable to watch.

In a class of their own they were simply outstanding and were clearly the two most influential players on the ground, who was best, the pundits around the ground split them.

Nick did get seven goals, brother Fintan six, but Nick’s last goal came courtesy of a pass from Fintan.

In great conditions at Rushworth, albeit a little slippery, the home side certainly dished it up to the visitors before the usual

suspect stepped up, Josh Mellington kicked five goals inside 15 minutes to take the game away from the home side and set up an imposing 46 point lead at quarter time.

When he succumbed to injury, and already missing his mate Jack Exell due to covid, the Towners had to flip the board in the forward line.

This is when the Brazil boys decided to step up and take control.

With Jimmy Herring controlling the backline like a veteran and Riley Dowell ferocious at the contest the Towners although sluggish in a not too attractive game continued to control the game winning in the end by 103 points.

Two new inclusions were Lachlan & Riley Kego, although short of matches were a big influence in the ruck and up forward creating many opportunities for the visitors.

Iain Baldwin as usual grabbed his customary 30 possessions relishing the slippery conditions, Matt McCarty in his new role was good as was “skipper” Jett Bewick who controlled the wing.

Next week we host Undera on Sunday, this is a huge day for the club and for definitely everyone, if you haven’t been touched by cancer in some way whether it be a family member, yourself or a friend you are very lucky.

Violet Town netballers give Rushworth a masterclass KDFNL VIOLET TOWN NETBALL A GRADE COMING off the long weekend bye, the Towners were rested and ready to come out firing.

From the first centre pass it was evident that the Towners were ready to put together a solid four quarters of netball.

Applying consistent pressure and making Rushworth work extra hard, Violet Town’s defenders were creating crucial turnovers and keeping the pressure up all game.

The midcourt’s vision into the ring helped Violet Town speed up their game and were able to walk away from the game with a massive 49 goal win.

The Towners have some great positives to take away from the game, and they look forward to their next match up against Undera.

Best On Court Jo Wild, Second Best Jayde Burden.

B GRADE THE Towners came into the game expecting a tough match up against Rushworth, however the Towners controlled the game from the beginning.

The midcourt girls were able to work effortlessly together to ensure they were able to feed the goalers with ease.

With strong defensive pressure across the whole court, Violet Town were able to convert all turnovers into goals and put themselves back on to the winners list.

Best On Court Teagan Kubeil, Second Best Macey Ross.

C GRADE THE Towners came out fighting strong in the first quarter really lifting their intensity and pushing Rushworth, however the Towners were unable to maintain the intensity for the full game to match a well drilled Rushworth.

The defenders put up a fight, doing their best to create turnovers and peg back any goals they could. Despite the girls drive and determination, they were outplayed on the day, but the game

15 & UNDER VIOLET Town started the game with some great passages of play from there centre passes to get the ball into the shooters, unfortunately the shooters couldn’t get their goals in and Rushworth were too quick in transitioning the ball down their shooters who could miss.

This trend continued for the next two quarters, with Violet Town lifting their defensive pressure all over the court in the third quarter to come up with some fantastic intercepts and deflects, making Rushworth work a bit hard to get the ball to their shooters.

Violet Town fought hard in the final quarter with some great defensive pressure coming up with some ball and working it down the court as a team to our shooters who were able to score.

The Towners finished the game

off strongly with their best quarter for the game.

A fantastic team effort by all.

13 & UNDER THE game started off with some nerves and the ball went back and forth before a goal was scored.

This back and forth continued throughout the whole game with Violet Town putting on some fantastic defensive pressure, coming up with some great intercepts in the centre third.

Unfortunately Rushworth were a bit taller than the young inexperienced Violet Town team and they were able to stop the ball from getting in the Towners goal ring, or easily got the rebounds.

Violet Town never stopped trying all game and fought hard until the end with the last quarter being their best quarter for the game but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the win.

An amazing team effort with some great passages of play from everyone out on court.

Tough day on court has Longwood forming new game plans for future KDFNL NETBALL LONGWOOD A GRADE

A very tough game for our u13s this week unfortunately.

But that didn’t stop the girls from still giving it their very best, so Larni and I are very proud of them.

This week’s best on went to Allirah, she gave 110 per cent this week she had her hands to so many intercepts and never put her head down.

Coaches’ award this week goes to Mikaylah.

She was chucked into a position she hasn’t played in and adapted really well.

She was a great voice on court, very encouraging to the other girls and was able to bring the ball down court and even got a few turnovers.

Well done girls we are very proud of each and every one of you.

You are all stars to us.

WE hit some team goals when we come up against tally’s well-oiled machine.

The girls showed a great display of grit and determination.

We didn’t end the day with a win, we ended with a plan.

Best was Brooke Bennett, her presence and intensity on the court was undeniable, no task seems too big for this superstar.

Coaches award to Bree Maloney for her drive to work her talents into teamwork, her confidence on court blossoming.

C GRADE

We knew we were in for a hard game today, but the C grade Ladies did not Let Tally have it easy, we fought right till the end only going down 49-27.

Best on went to a lady who gave 110 per cent the whole game, Elizabeth Howe, and coach’s goes to Lily Cooper who never gave up even after being pushed around and still shot like a legend.

Euroa holds second position GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS A RIPPER of a winter’s day greeted the senior side at 2pm last Saturday at Memorial Oval as they took on rivals Rochester FNC for their game of football.

A huge crowd was in attendance as the annual (although the club hasn’t had one since 2019) Past Players Day was in full swing.

The Euroa side began with a flurry as they piled on six unanswered goals against an under-manned Rochester outfit (Rochester having to forfeit their reserves grade game due to injuries and illness across both these teams).

Tristan Davies was a very much welcome addition into the team as he provided huge challenges for the opposition backline.

His forward line work combined well with Erish Uthayakumar’s strength and Jack McKernan’s relentless leading which only spelt doom for the Rochester team.

Andrew Smith was giving first use of the ball in the midfield for the likes of Jacob Gleeson and Andrew Bell yet the lightning speed and will to will the ball displayed by local young gun Lachy Hill was a standout for many who were there to witness this match.

Lachy not only shut down the opposition coach but made sure his presence was felt all round the ground in the process.

His best on ground performance was shaded only slightly by the goal-kicking prowess of Jett Trotter whose bag of six majors reflected another outstanding contribution to the team success.

Jack Hellier was again sublime in the heat of the contest with a cool head and a steady pair of hands guid-

All in all it was a very fine performance from a team who now has eight wins on the trot.

They are looking forward to hosting Tatura FNC next weekend in Euroa with the 2:35pm bounce not able to arrive soon enough.

rial Oval crowd, honoring the past players of yesteryear was the forefront of the thirds boys mind.

The loss of Fletcher Paul and Charlie Watson due to COVID health and safety protocols left a huge hole in the lineup however the Magpies were not deterred.

To cover this loss Coach Hill was forced to shift magnets.

Nic Hill being moved forward and Nick McCabe slotting in at full back.

The first quarter was an arm wrestle with neither side giving an inch, it was Captain Jager that steadied the ship seeing through his and the Magpies first major of the morning.

Tynan Cummings held down the defense acting as a human brick wall to the Rochester inside 50’s.

The Euroa midfield got on top in the second quarter, with Darby Wilson and Will Creevey leading the charge accompanied by some handy ruck-work by Heath Downie and Talleigh McCabe. Heading into the long break Euroa held a handy five goal lead but it was clear more work needed to be done to secure the victory.

It took 30 seconds into the third quarter for Euroa to hit the scoreboard thanks to the strong dukes and steady eye of Nic Hill who was relishing his return to the forward line.

Following this, Ned Ivill kicked a goal that will go down in EFNC folklore from the pocket (on his opposite boot if you don’t mind) which sent the Magpie faithful into overdrive. With one quarter to play the game

was clearly in the hands of Euroa but rounding out a complete four quarter performance was the ultimate goal.

Inaccuracy disallowed the Magpies from completely burying the Tigers on the scoreboard, they were dominating the play in all other facets which secured the 4 points on a monumental occasion for the club.

Overall, Coach Hill labeled the performance “outstanding”. A little bit of cheese for the rats indeed!

It was a beautiful sunny morning, perfect conditions for playing a home game against Rochester.

The first quarter saw Euroa kick two quick goals.

Rochester were under the pump by Euroa’s defence.

Sam Leigh along other forward line players helped convert goals giving Euroa a healthy lead.

The second quarter commenced with Rochester kicking their first goal.

The tigers put plenty of pressure on Euroa’s midfield and back line scoring another goal.

Ryan Hill scored Euroa’s first goal this quarter followed by a beautiful goal in the pocket by Will Creevey.

The third quarter saw both sides battle for the ball.

Max Miller, Charlie Hall, Talleigh McCabe and Nathan Butler moved the ball down to the midfield.

Young player Archie Wilson showed he was not afraid to take on the bigger boys with some outstanding tackling.

This quarter saw Euroa goalless.

Euroa dominated in the last quarter.

Blake moved back into the forward line and helped extend Euroa’s lead with a goal.

The Euroa boys were too strong for Rochester with a final score of Euroa 85 to Rochester 27.
