Region’s rent rises worst

EHI appoints CEO THE board of Euroa Health Inc (EHI) has announced that Mr Tony Holland will commence in the role of chief executive officer, effective May 15.

Mr Holland was most recently the general manager at Donate Life Victoria, leading a team of 75 medical and nursing professionals in the delivery of the state-wide deceased organ donation program across Victoria.

He worked closely with the Federal Organ and Tissue Authority,

Prior to that, Mr Holland had a number of chief executive officer roles

including with the Harden Regional Development Corporation; OzHelp Foundation Ltd; and the Arthritis Foundation of the ACT. In a statement released last week, Euroa Health chairman thanked interim CEO Melissa Seymour for her work over the past weeks.

“Melissa has been doing a wonderful job standing in as the Interim CEO,

and will continue in this role until May 15, when she will resume her role as innovation and special projects manager,” Mr Siede said.

“We wish Tony every success as he commences his new role as CEO, and we sincerely thank Melissa as she continues her journey at Euroa Health.”

EHI was established in 1927, and today consists of a 22-bed Acute Hospital;

a 3-bed Urgent Care Centre; and “GraniteHill” - a modern 75-bed Aged Care facility opened in 2017; and a new 10-bed dementia facility designed to Dementia Australia recommendations due to open in 2023.

EHI also boasts a recently opened Imaging facility providing both x-ray and ultrasound services, and a fully equipped gymnasium.

Burnt Creek Landcare have rabbit problem in their sights THE Burnt Creek Landcare Group was reformed in 2022, with a well-attended launch held in Avenel in December.

The group represents a network of Landcare groups in our region working on areas of interest such as

drought and climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, revegetation, pest management and more.

They operate with a dedicated volunteer committee and are supported by members of the community.

On Saturday, April 1 from

9.30am to 1pm, the Burnt Creek Landcare Group will host their next event, a rabbit control information and demonstration session on a property in Locksley.

The session will be presented by Tim Bloomfield who has forty years of pro-

fessional experience in pest animal management, including consulting and assisting Melbourne Water and local councils with their rabbit management strategies, and is also a mentor to the Victorian Rabbit Action Network.

With pest management one of the group’s key areas of action, Tim will share his experience and knowledge about how to be effective in removing rabbits, in particular around tree plantations and under buildings.

The group welcomes any-

one interested to come along to this free, catered event.

Local CFA teams set for championships in Mooroopna TEAMS for local CFA brigades will travel to Mooroopna over the coming fortnight, to showcase their skills at the CFA/Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) state firefighter championships.

The events will return to Mooroopna Recreation Reserve for the

third consecutive year, with the Urban Junior State Championships to be held this weekend, and the senior urban, senior rural and junior rural events held on March 25 and 26.

CFA deputy chief officer Kaylene Jones said there had been an ex-

traordinary amount of work to ensure the 2023 championships could still be held in Mooroopna, with the event set to provide a boost to the local community following extensive flooding in October last year.

“At one point, there was more

than a metre of water over the running track at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve,” she said.

“The state championships are a big part of CFA’s volunteer culture, and promote the important values of teamwork and respect, as well as engaging our members in some

friendly competitions with likeminded competitors.”

Events at the state championships are based on practical firefighting activities, with the focus on physical fitness, teamwork and equipment skills by utilising hoses, hydrants, and other equipment.

Hume cardiac arrest rate near worst VICTORIAN residents are stepping up to help save lives as cardiac arrest emergency cases reach record highs across the state, according to new research by Ambulance Victoria (AV).

The latest Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry (VACAR) annual report reveals paramedics responded to 7361 cardiac arrests last financial year, a 5.8 per cent increase on previous figures.

According to crude incidence rate data, cardiac

arrests per 100,000 people were considerably higher in regional areas, with Hume region’s 161 the state’s second-highest figure.

The report found when cardiac arrests were witnessed by members of the public, 79 per cent of people were willing to step up and commence lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while 107 cardiac arrest patients received shocks from automated external defibrillators (AEDs) before

paramedics arrived.

AV director research and evaluation, Ziad Nehme, said Victoria’s cardiac survival rate was among the best in the world as a result.

“We know that minutes matter in a cardiac arrest and that if a person receives bystander CPR and defibrillation, their chance of survival more than doubles,” he said.

“We can proudly say that Victoria has the best cardiac survival rates in Australia

and one of the best in the world.”

Cardiac incidence rates across rural Victoria have steadily increased since 2016/17, rising from 129 to 148 (per 100,000 population) during the timeframe, compared to a rise of 92 to 100 in metropolitan areas.

The report showed 79 per cent of patients suffered cardiac arrests at home, with men making up 65 per cent of AV responses.

The average age for cardi-

ac arrests was 74 for women and 67 for men.

Dr Nehme said the continued enrolment of volunteers in AV’s GoodSAM program, which provides the address of someone in cardiac arrest for volunteers to commence a lifesaving medical response, had played an important role in improving health outcomes across the state.

“With more Victorians suffering cardiac arrests than ever before, AV’s Good-

SAM Responder program has never been more vital,” he said.

“GoodSAM is a lifesaving smartphone app that connects Victorians in cardiac arrest with volunteers who are willing to start CPR and use an AED in the first critical minutes while paramedics are on the way.

“We have thousands of GoodSAM volunteers willing to help us save lives across the state and I urge more people to sign up.”

Red hot rentals in region North East the worst in regional g Victoria for rent rises: analysis y

By STEVE KELLY NORTH East regional rents had the highest increases in regional Victoria, rising $36 per week from $385 to $421 (9.4 per cent) on average since interest rates started climbing last May, according to a new industry report.

Community Housing Industry Association Victoria analysed the state’s top 10 hotspots for rental increases.

Inner East Melbourne tops the list at $111 extra per week, and the North East was ranked the ninth worst region in the state.

Based on a single person on income benefits, vacancy rates in Wangaratta are 0.1 per cent and across the state remain well below two per cent, making it even harder for renters to find a home, much less one they can afford.

It’s making the liveability of tenants even more difficult with inflation currently at 7.8 per cent and the price of some goods and services out of reach for many.

Beyond Housing chief executive officer Celia Adams explained that regional Victorians living in private rental are faced with a desperate situation.

“There is a decline in rental affordability, a decline in the supply of affordable rental properties alongside the significant rise in living costs,” she said.

“We are seeing people choosing to stay in a rental home they can no longer afford, or that may be overcrowded, unsuitable for their needs, or most worryingly unsafe.”

Ms Adams said many are choosing to leave their community to go where they can find more affordable housing.

PRICES RISE: Community Housing Industry Association Victoria reports North East rents on average have risen $36 per week since interest rates started rising last May. “This means moving away from friends, family, supports systems and established networks and is a last-choice solution for many desperate households,” she said.

“We know that 40.6 per cent of renters within North East Victoria are experiencing housing stress, and while the latest data reports a nine percent increase since interest rates started rising, in fact the longer term picture is even more dire, with rents already rising by almost 18 per cent over the last two years.

“Demand for Beyond Housing’s private rental support services has skyrocketed, we are seeing a 37 per cent increase compared to the same time last year, and sadly more than half of those are households who have previously sought help from our services.

“Low-income households reached the point of rental

stress earlier and are caught in the crisis for longer as there are not adequate pathways out and into affordable housing.”

Ms Adams said the answer to getting more people and families out of housing crisis, off the housing wait list and to ending homelessness is an ongoing commitment to more long-term social housing.

She said the Victorian Government has been prepared to do that under the Big Home Build and now the Federal Government’s commitment to 30,000 new social housing properties.

“Our partnership with the Victorian Government and with the philanthropic Peter and Lyndy White Foundation will see Beyond Housing deliver another 64 long-term homes across the region by the end of this year,” Ms Adams said.

“And there are more than 180 homes in the pipeline, due

for completion by mid-2025.

“Beyond Housing will continue to work in partnership with all levels of government, our stakeholders, and the broader community to identify impactful ways to address the shortage of affordable housing in the region and to pursue our goal to end homelessness.”

Federal member for Indi, Helen Haines, said there is still much that needs to be done to address the lack of social and affordable housing in our region, and to increase housing supply more generally.

“The increasing cost of rent across the North East is incredibly concerning and is hurting households across the region,” she said.

“I am working with the Federal Government to include changes to their housing package that would unlock more housing supply in regional Australia.”

Rock art returned to Taungurung people THE Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) and the Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) came together with community to celebrate the return of the Garden Range Rock Art Site recently.

In 2019, TLaWC sought assistance to acquire the culturally significant 23-hectare parcel of land in the Garden Ranges, Euroa.

The ILSC granted $265,000 for the purchase of the site, as well as fencing to halt degradation by livestock and other costs.

The parcel of land contains two rock art sites estimated to be over 22,000 years old and as the site is particularly unstable and fragile, its exact location will remain in the trust of TLaWC. TLaWC chief executive officer Matt Burns explained the significance of the milestone.

NEW CITIZENS: Strathbogie Shire Council has hosted a Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming nine new Australian Citizens.

New Australian citizens welcomed

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council recently conducted a Citizenship Ceremony, authorising over the pledge of commitment made by nine new Australian citizens.

Mayor Laura Binks was the authorised presiding officer administering the pledge.

Cr Binks said it was a special ceremony where the conferees read their pledge of commitment to Australia.

“We are proud Strathbogie Shire is a culturally diverse municipality and congratulate our residents on becoming Australian citizens,” she said.

“Attending a citizenship ceremony and making the pledge is the final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen.”

The nine conferees from Britain, Ireland, Vietnam, Netherlands, India, New Zealand, Venezuela and Philippines formally pledged their commitment to Australia in front of family and friends.

“It is fantastic to see the conferees get such joy out of the ceremony, with their loved ones watching on in support,” Cr Binks said.

“The conferees were presented with their certificate

of Australian Citizenship and Council gifted everyone with a native Australian plant.”

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland and Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad also attended the event.

The ceremony fulfils the requirements under Australian citizenship law and also provides an opportunity for council to officially welcome its new citizens.

Council conducted the ceremony at the Euroa Community Cinema on behalf of the Australian Department of Affairs.

Presenter Nic Healey spent the morning at the Violet Town Café as part of the ABC’s Love Where You Live Campaign, showcasing various parts of the region.

“It is not surprising the ABC chose Violet Town as a broadcast location as there has been so much exciting news coming out of the township recently.

“It was not too long ago the Southern Aurora Memorial, in the town’s centre, was awarded the Best Memorial/ Monument at the Australian Street Art Awards.”

Cr Binks said as many were already aware, Violet Town was renowned for its monthly market which regularly draws visitors in

the thousands.

“The market is such a massive drawcard for tourism to Strathbogie Shire and it is something the Violet Town community work incredibly hard to run each month,” she said.

“It is just one of the many examples of the community working together to achieve great things.

“It is fantastic for other media outlets to take interest in our beautiful area and promote it as well as explore the many personalities and community members that make up the area.”

Strathbogie crime rates remain stable STRATHBOGIE Shire crime rates have risen slightly over the previous 12 months to December 31, according to the latest figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA).

The number of criminal incidents was listed as 381 across the shire or 3304.3 rate.

Offences recorded were 611 and alleged offences reports 183.

Person victim reports were recorded as 213 while family incidences recorded 148.

The Harm caused by crime measure re-organises the person based victim reports by principal offence type into an alternate view that is categorised by a high, medium of low harm classification.

Not all offence types included in the CSA offence classification are included in the Harm caused by crime measure.

The harm caused measure is designed to allow the user to explore offence types and the different harm classifications at the state and local

government area levels.

In the high category of harm caused to a person section of the stats for Strathbogie 33 incidences were recorded, while in the medium level of harm category 64 were recorded, and in the low category 116 were reported.

Overall across the state the rate of recorded offences remained stable, up 0.5 per cent to 7332.9 per 100,000 Victorians in the last 12 months, while the number of offences increased 1.2 per cent to 483,441.

All offence categories increased in the last 12 months, except for category F Other Offences which decreased by 10,286 offences or 87.1 per cent to 1525 (related to Breach of Chief Health Officer offences, which had been recorded at higher levels during the first two years of the pandemic).

In the 12 months to December 31 the number of criminal incidents remained stable, up slightly, 0.4 per cent or 1412 to 349,852 incidents.

The rate also remained

stable, down slightly 0.3 per cent to 5306.6 per 100,000 Victorians, the lowest level since the year ending 2005.

Alleged offender incidents increased seven per cent to 162,750 in the last 12 months, as did the rate up six per cent to 2803.5 per 100,000.

The victimisation rate increased by 0.4 per cent to 3070.8 reports per 100,000 Victorians.

The number of person-related victim reports was up 1.1 per cent to 202,452 and organisation reports was up

4.4 per cent to 68,067.

Family incidents increased 1.3 per cent in the last 12 months, with 92,296 incidents recorded across Victoria.

The rate of family incidents also increased, up 0.6 per cent to 1400 incidents per 100,000 Victorians.

CSA chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said “the majority of offence types increased in the last 12 months, with notable increases in breach of bail offences and acquisitive crime types such as thefts”.

CHANCE RAIN REDUCES: After two years of La Nina conditions, the Bureau of Meteorology has announced its end, but now it’s changed the status to El Nino watch.

Watch drier times, but no certain drought LA Nina has ended and the Bureau of Meteorology has now moved to El Nino watch, but even if El Nino impacts Australia, it doesn’t necessarily mean drought.

The bureau’s Dr Andrew Watkins said there have been 27 El Nino years since 1900, and around 18 of those years were affected by widespread winterspring drought.

La Nina is the cool phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), usually bringing more rain to Australia, while El Nino is the warm phase, where our climate is often drier than usual.

While the Pacific Ocean is ENSO-neutral, the bureau has moved to El Nino watch as there are some signs of El Nino forming later in the year.

El Nino watch means there is a 50 per cent chance of El Nino.

Dr Watkins said should the chance of El Nino forming later in 2023 increase to around 70pc, the bureau will change to El Nino alert status.

“Even if El Nino impacts Australia, this does not necessarily lead to drought,” he said.

Dr Watkins said after

three years of La Nina and record-breaking rainfall in eastern Australia, the bureau’s long-range forecast shows drier than average conditions for most of Australia over the coming months.

“Long-range forecasts show there’s an increased chance of below average rainfall for most of Australia during autumn 2023,” he said.

If you run an entertainment venue, festival or outdoor music event, EPA has a new guide to help separate reasonable noise from sounds that annoy.

EPA’s new Entertainment Venue and Outdoor Event Music Noise Guidelines explain the laws, the limits and just how late you can keep the tunes blasting.

EPA chief executive officer Lee Miezis says it’s all part of EPA’s simplified permits for music events.

“We’ve been talking to the music and events industry and removed the need for multiple permits for events that run for several days,” Mr Miezis said.

“We recognise paperwork doesn’t reduce noise, so we redesigned the permit process to take the complications out while keeping in protections for the public and environment,” he said.

EPA’s improved system supports promoters and the ticket buying public, while continuing to work alongside local councils who deal with parking and the police who respond to complaints.

Taking effect in 2021, the revamped Environment Protection Act 2017 changed the way noise emissions are assessed and managed.

The legislation set more sensible expectations for Victoria’s live music industry - it includes protection for long established venues in

changing urban areas and easier ways for operators to measure noise.

The 2021 legislation retained noise limits and introduced new decision-making processes to decide when noise becomes noise pollution.

As well as applying a limit to noise, EPA can assess whether it is unreasonable, based on how far the noise spreads, how loud it is, how long it lasts, its character – bells or chainsaws and the time and place it occurs.

The legislation includes a General Environmental Duty that applies to everyone, so if your activity involves noise, it’s your duty to be proactive and reduce the level of risk as far as reasonably practicable.

“Where we can protect the public and environment while making it easier for the operators to comply with regulations, that’s a win for everybody,” Mr Miezis said.

Let’s celebrate the coronation of the king THIS year sees the anniversary of the friends of the Library.

Also on the list of celebrations is the first coronation of a king for the 21st century and maybe the last king of Australia.

As we have seven coffee shops, two restaurants and a pizza show down Binney Street (Euroa), will the shire and groups be closing the street in May during the celebrations?

If Euroa won’t do an event will some other part of the shire have one so we can go to it and then watch the coronation on television.

We have not done something like this since New Year’s Eve 1999.

For the coronation will the children of Strathbogie hear the church bells ring out when the king is crowned?

Or will a few plant a tree commemorating this day?

EuroaConnect must keep pressure on ARTC AS a community we can all be proud of the great work and success that EuroaConnect has achieved in negotiating the community’s preferred rail precinct option.

It was only a couple of years ago that ARTC was saying that the only viable option was a bigger and more dominant bridge.

Through EuroaConnect’s efforts we now have an underpass for Anderson Street as ARTC’s preferred option.

But there is still much to be done before the Euroa rail precinct is completed and as a community we need EuroaConnect to continue to advocate on our behalf, which includes a seat on the steering committee where the wishes of the Euroa community can be promoted.

I believe that the Strathbogie Shire Council will benefit greatly from having EuroaConnect at the table.

Happy 91st birthday Ruth PRESIDENT John Macklin of the Longwood Seniors sends his best wishes to Ruth King on her 91st birthday.

Ruth was the president of the Longwood Seniors for eight years and had done an excellent job over that time.

There was a very good turnout of seniors for the first Monday of the month, with a wonderful two course meal cooked by the Longwood kitchen ladies.

Members are looking forward to as they adventure to Hanging Rock on the bus.

So far 42 members are going, with lunch provided to all those attending.

Half price cloth nappies under program return STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is again offering residents a one-off reimbursement to cover half the cost of cloth nappies and associated accessories during a six-month trial period until the end of June.

The Cloth Nappy Reimbursement Program was created to encourage local families to reduce waste produced by disposable nappies.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks explained why cloth nappies were a better alternative for the environment.

“Disposable Nappies currently make up around 10 per cent of Australia’s waste going to landfill,” Cr Binks said.

“They take up a huge amount of space, can take up to 500 years to decompose and release a significant amount of methane in the decomposition process.”

Cr Binks said council was excited to offer 50 per cent off the purchase price of cloth nappies and accessories.

“We’re offering a maximum of $150, or 50 per cent off the purchase price, to Shire residents to purchase cloth and swim nappies, reusable liners

Avenel Cemetery Trust pays tribute to dedicated, long-time volunteers IN February, two longstanding and hard-working volunteers of the Avenel Cemetery Trust, Joyce White and Len Underwood, were recognised for their efforts.

Each was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the Department of Health.

Collectively, they have a combined total of over 80 years of service and are both honorary life members of the trust.

Len Underwood was first appointed to the Avenel Cemetery Trust in 1979.

During this time, he has been elected chairman and filled many hours of work helping maintain the appearance of the cemetery.

Joyce White was first appointed to the Avenel Cemetery Trust in 1986 and has subsequently filled the positions of secretary and treasurer.

She has also given many hours of voluntary work in helping to maintain the high standard of appearance that the cemetery possesses.

Len remembers with affection and amusement, that when he was a school-

boy, he would walk past the old picket fence that separated the cemetery from pedestrians.

Times change and the picket fence is now long gone, replaced with cyclone ire fencing.

Although not as attractive, it is longer lasting and requires less maintenance.

Through their many years of dedication, Len and Joyce have known many developments within the cemetery.

They have seen the introduction of a lawn section, a remodelling of the rose garden, and the erection of the stone gateway at the Queen Street entrance.

They have also seen the arrival of the first ride-on mower, purchased as a replacement for sheep that used to graze various sections of the cemetery in the days before petrol driven grass cutters arrived.

YEARS OF SERVICE: Len Underwood and Joyce White have been recognised for their many years of voluntary work for the Avenel Cemetery Trust.

Households, businesses face “significant” price rises A PROPOSED 30 per cent surge on Victoria’s default energy bill prices is set to add to the rising cost of living bills in households and business within the North East.

Victoria’s Essential Services Commission released its Victorian Default Offer (VDO) for state electricity prices for the next financial year last week, which is proposing an average annual bill for domestic customers to rise just over 30 per cent on this financial year prices, with small business customers facing increases of 33 per cent.

This comes after The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) revealed its draft electricity price increases of between 20 and 22 per cent for South Australia, New South Wales and South-East Queensland.

The AER chair, Clare Savage, said the increases were “significant”, but they could have been as much as 40 per cent to 50 per cent without the Federal Government’s intervention in December to cap domestic gas and black coal prices.

The Victorian ESC draft decision proposes an increase from $1403 to around $1829 per year for residential customers and from $5620 to around $7358 per year for small business customers.

ENERGY SURGE: Electricity bills under the proposed Victorian Default Offer are set to rise as much as 31 per cent within Victoria and 33 per cent for businesses, which is set to be another blow to expenses for local businesses. spokesperson said despite the higher increase on the proposed default rate, the VDO will continue to pay less on average for their electricity than those on the Default Market Offer in other states and encourage consumers to shop around for better deals.

“We know that Victorian households are facing real pressures because of the increasing cost of energy globally,” the spokesperson said.

“That’s why we’ve fasttracked a new round of the $250 power saving bonus and encourage Victorians to access our rebates for solar PV and hot water systems.

“We’re also reducing our reliance on costly fossil fuels - that’s why we’re bring-

ing back the State Electricity Commission and replacing unreliable, privatised coal with clean, governmentowned, renewable energy.”

Federal Indi MP Helen Haines, said she hopes to see measures implemented in the next federal budget which will help ease the burden of the proposed increase.

“The forecast increase to the default electricity price is yet another bill that households are seeing going up, along with rent, interest rates and groceries,” she said.

“The cost of living is something the government can act on, including ways to help people bring their power bills.”

Council continues flood recovery operations

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is continuing to work through assessments following the October 2022 flooding event which affected many parts of the shire.

Aside from the extensive road network that was damaged during the floods, council also sustained damage to some of its infrastructure assets.

“These included our boat shed and ranger’s hut at the Nagambie Regatta Centre, Euroa Bowling and Croquet Clubrooms, the Euroa RSL and Third Age Club, Euroa Miniature Railway, Euroa Caravan Park,” Mayor Laura Binks said.

“Assessments have taken place on local roads and infrastructure that were impacted by the floods.

“We have predominantly completed cleaning up roads and removing floodaffected materials from council’s assets.

“We also recently went out to tender for a number of rectification works and we hope to award these contracts in mid-April with the works to follow on from that.”

Cr Binks thanked residents for their patience during the recovery period as the entire Goulburn Valley region grapples with the affects of the flooding event.

“We would like to remind residents to continue to drive to the conditions when using our road network,” she said.

“Please be safe and weary of the current road conditions which were extensively damaged during the October 2022 floods.”

Rural Finance Flood Support closing soon PRIMARY producers impacted by the October floods to apply for financial support before the deadline on April 30.

Four streams of assistance remain open through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, in a Commonwealth and Victorian Government partnership.

Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said primary producers in all local government areas across the Euroa electorate can apply.

“Many primary producers have been flat out with harvest, clean ups and everyday life,” she said.

“It is important applications are completed before April 30.

“There is an array of support on offer, from concessional loans to transport support and clean up grants.

“Even if you are a smallscale primary production enterprise you may be eligible for funding to cover costs associated with your flood recovery.”

Ms Cleeland is encouraging primary producers to get in touch with Rural Finance is they are unsure of what funding they may be eligible for.

“I would advise anyone unsure about their situation to call Rural Finance on 1800 260 425 for a confidential discussion,” Ms Cleeland said.

HELPING FARMERS: Flood relief for farmers affected by the floods earlier this year can apply for grants now under the Victorian Primary Producer Flood Recovery Grant scheme.

Cleeland appointed to Legal and Social Issues Committee THE Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has been appointed to the Legislative Assembly’s Legal and Social Issues Committee (LSIC).

The LSIC can examine any matters related to the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, Heath, Justice and Community Safety and Premier and Cabinet.

Alongside Ms Cleeland’s position as shadow parliamentary secretary for health, her appointment will aim to provide a strong voice for regional Victoria on important inquiries.

“The Andrews Government has the majority and the ability to form inquiries in the Lower House,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It’s crucial we challenge their city centric views.

“Alongside the Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish, we will be ensuring inquiry recommendations aren’t made without considerable input from regional voices.”

Ms Cleeland is hopeful the Andrews Government would establish inquiries to tackle big issues facing regional Victoria.

“The Legal and Social Issues

“With the government a minority in the Upper House, the Coalition and crossbench can join forces to examine important issues and make strong recommendations to government,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I will be pushing the government to establish inquiries that will have a clear purpose and support improved outcomes for regional Victorians.”

Rosalie Wrest the new president for garden club THE annual general meeting of the Euroa Garden Club was held in the Show Ground Pavilion on Friday, which was well attended.

Outgoing President Christine John, invited Nola Dudley to chair the meeting for the election of office-bearers.

Rosalie Wrest was elected unopposed to lead the club as president for 2023, other positions filled were, treasurer, Irene Gilliland, secretary, Denise Holt.

The committee for 2023 is Sue Marr, Mary Kelly, Sue Wilkes, Roberta Moser, Christine John, Therese Hamill, Margaret Cerini and Mandy Dixey.

The club is looking to maintain the friendly, welcoming community which is the garden club and to share interesting and happy events in the new year.

The club is grateful for the opportunity to meet in the very comfortable meeting room at the Euroa Show Ground Pavilion, but plans to organise some trips to gardens and to visit some local gardens.

Guest speakers will be a big part of the new year.

The shared afternoon tea and the trading table are always popular features of a garden club gathering.

However, the litany of tragic, broken lives is testimony to the consequences of walking away from God instead of toward Him and His abundant life promises. (John 10:10) Not believing in a Creator, takes ignoring strong evidence and dulling minds to reason. (Phill.2:12-13) New scientific discoveries continue to put more nails in evolutionary-theorys ‘coffin’; but hasn’t stopped textbooks reprinting proven falsehoods (re Lucy, fish gills, moths, finches, junk DNA and the list continues) Most great inventions, like flight, have arisen from observing Nature; as created by Divine Design.

We ourselves are Gods’ masterpiece, created in His image. (Gen.1:27, endowed with great intelligence that is meant to be for seeking the Truth-Giver.

Consider one example, from Creation magazine, Creation.com Daily; an article by Aussie scientist Jonathon Sarfati, about geckos; which have incredible abilities to stick to surfaces, running upside down, even on polished glass. A decade ago, it was shown their feet have microscopically structured hairs that exploit atom-scale attractions to support their weight. This stickiness is self-cleaning, avoiding the problem of sticky tape which collects dust, losing effectiveness. A running gecko needs to stick and unstick smoothly and quickly.

Scientists invented a similar tape but couldn’t imitate the angle of the curved hairs to detach easily and store energy like a spring. Mechanical engineers in nano-structures note that future gecko technology has a way to go; but man would never have invented this, if geckos hadn’t revealed it first. Our implausible planet isn’t full of millions of happy coincidences but is God’s one great plan. Mankind is endowed with abilities that have taken us to the moon and invented computer technology! Who believes complex computers could ever ‘evolve’ without intelligent programming behind it all?

Faith in evolution is death to faith in God, which gives life! Christian scientists earn the same degrees as unbelieving scientists; but data is interpreted according to bias. The greatest Universities were established by Christian thinkers yet today, from these same institutions, flows an anti-Christian culture that is taught and caught; and causing depression and hopelessness as never before. Thankfully, on other campuses today, students are opening up to Truth and revival is changing lives across America as they are redeeming their Gifts of grace, freedom, joy and ever-lasting hope (Jer.29:11) that Jesus has provided

The garden club raised $500, with a stall at the November Farmers’ Market.

The plants being sold were all raised by members and donated for this occasion.

It was agreed by the members to donate this money to Euroa Food Share.

Garden Club members, who are part of this non-fundraising organisation, are proud to make this contribution to a local charity.

The meeting concluded with afternoon tea and an optimism for a happy year of club.

Gliding on a wing and a prayer

By BERTRAM LOBERT SEVENTY people ventured into the Strathbogie Forest over two evenings last week to learn more about the Southern Greater Glider, Australia’s largest gliding possum.

Both nights offered perfect viewing conditions for attendees - dry, mild weather and not even a hint of breeze.

A fine supper, hot cuppa and good company rounded out the evening.

The evening began with a presentation on this very special and endangered gliding marsupial, from Save Our Strathbogie Forest committee members, Helen Mckernan, Bertram Lobert and Sally Mann.

The Strathbogie Forest is a Victorian stronghold for the Southern Greater Glider and the group has spent 10 years lobbying government for better management of the forest.

With a diet consisting exclusively of leaves, buds and flowers of certain Eucalypt trees, these gliders usually spend all their time high in the tree canopy.

They spend their days curled up snug and safe in a tree hollow, usually in very large, old habitat trees many of which are 100+ years old.

Such large trees are critical

for the survival of the glider.

With government fuel reduction burns in the Strathbogie Forest only weeks away, the Save Our Strathbogie Forest group has requested Victorian Environment Minister Ingrid Stitt to cancel the burns.

Planned burns are known to cause the collapse of significant numbers of large, hollow-bearing trees and the community group estimates that thousands of trees and perhaps 400 of these gliders will be killed if the burns proceed.

The highlight of the evenings was the glider (pictured below)- it was sitting on a low branch about seven metres above ground and offered everyone a fabulous view.

Their black and white pelage and that long fluffy tail make for striking close-up viewing. With good management, survival of this species in the Strathbogie Forest won’t have to rely only on a wing and a prayer.

More walks are planned for the future.

Super Saturday Shed Sale a Success On Saturday 18th March the volunteers at our Bowerbird Opshop held a Super Saturday Shed Sale to make room for new donations into their furniture shed which is accessible by the Opshop on Binney St or down Bakehouse Lane via Kirkland Ave Euroa. A total of $1,500.00 was raised for Euroa Health facility.

Interim CEO says “this event was another fabulous way for Euroa Health to not only receive and sell donations made to the Opshop but also a way for Euroa Health to say thank you with a free bbq available for our volunteers and customers”.

GraniteHill Aged Care Manager, Angela also spent the morning at the Opshop, to talk to members of the public who are interested in joining #teameuroahealth to work and study while being paid as an employee at Euroa Health.

Cycling criterium to be showcased on Euroa streets THE Shepparton Cycling Club has advised that the 2023 Euroa Town Crits will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 1pm to 5.30pm.

Local residential traffic movement will be restricted on Kirkland Avenue, and Station, Binney, Bury and Brock streets during

this time.

Club race director Bradley Higgins said they encourage residents within these streets to make arrangements to park outside this restricted zone if they intend to travel during this time.

“For any access requirements contact the road

traffic controllers who will be able to guide you in/out when/how to do so,” Mr Higgins said.

The St John’s Catholic Church parking access will be available from 5.30pm.

THANKS BLAZE AID: I was grateful for the help of a Blaze Aid lady Christine last week.

I could not take my wheelie walker to shop in the supermarket so had to use a shopping trolley awkwardly.

She saw me struggling at the register and helped load my groceries into my Ute. She is one of the Blaze Aid team (she is their cook) helping out for many months those affected by the floods.

The team finishes up in a week or so, and then she will hopefully go onto Forbes to help their community out after a quick trip home to Bairnsdale.

So I not only thank her but thanks to all Blaze Aid workers for their support in floods and fires and emergency times.

Busy month for Nagambie rowers

By DIANE GRANT THE Euroa Gazette caught up with Dave Andrews, of the Nagambie Rowing Club, who got in touch to let us know that three schools had held their annual rowing camp on Lake Nagambie.

“Damascus College Ballarat, Geelong Grammar, and Carey Baptist College all held intensive training sessions over several days,” Mr Andrews said.

“Some 120 odd year 10 students, coaches and supervisors took part.

“Then Nagambie Rowing Club hosted the February 1819 Nagambie Regatta on Lake Nagambie.

“Many club members and volunteers supported this local regatta which showed their enthusiasm in getting back on the lake after the floods last year.

“This active regatta set the scene for other regattas to come on the lake over March as well.”

Mr Andrews spoke about some of the challenges faced for those participating.

“Weather conditions for the Victorian National Rowing Championships were tough, testing both rowers and boats,” he said.

“A nasty crosswind ensured only the game and hardy ended up at the pointy end at the finish line.

“Surprisingly only one boat succumb to the conditions and the lifesavers earned their keep, rescuing the boat and crew.

“1320 individual athletes competed in over 130 events to make for a hectic and exciting few days of competition.

“All classes of boats were represented, including single scull, pairs/doubles, fours/ quad sculls and eights.”

Coming up is the March 18 Scotch Mercantile Regatta for Junior Boys State Championships on Lake Nagambie.

This will be followed by the APS Heads of the River on March 25.

Members of the Nagambie Rowing Club will also be taking part in the March 25 Footscray/Essendon Saltwater regatta.

Saturday sees 800 metre races on the beautiful Maribyrnong River, alongside Flemington Race Course, finishing at Footscray Rowing Club.

Driving a freight agenda at state conference WORKERS who drive the state’s economy through our $21 billion freight and logistics industry was the focus at last weekend’s Victorian Transport Association state conference.

Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne launched the conference at Philip Island, which brought together key members of the industry from across the state to improve and enhance supply chain capability and address labor shortages.

Ms Horne said they’re continuing to work with the freight and logistics industry to keep supply chains moving into the future and benefit the thousands of Victorians who work in and rely on it daily.’

“This Victorian Transport Association state conference is a great way to hear from key members of the industry to understand issues and address them, so we can keep supporting our producers, freight operators and exporters.”

Those in the industry will be recognised under this year’s theme: People First Managing Transport’s Greatest Asset.

The Labor Government is working with the Victorian Transport Association to address labour shortages in the sector through the Freight

The government’s Women in Transport Strategy 202124 was also be a focal point at the conference - with the project aimed at increasing the number of women working in public and private industry transport sectors to 50 per cent by 2024.

Women currently make up just 16 per cent of workers in the freight and logistics industry and therefore

have been a priority in the program - many are now in full-time employment and more graduates are looking for opportunities to join them.

The sector’s resilience and response to local and global events that have impacted supply chains was also discussed at the conference.

It includes the impacts to the industry following the devastating floods last year.

The freight sector contributes $21 billion to the state’s economy each year and underpins 260,000 jobs that ensure producers, exporters and importers can get their products to local and global markets.

The state conference concluded yesterday.

Maribyrnong, sees a 4.5k Head race, starting at the upper reaches and finishing at Essendon Rowing Club.

Medal presentations and light refreshments follow each day’s racing.

These are very welcomed by the rowers after their exertions and the socialising tops the day off.

Mr Andrews said members representing Nagambie Rowing Club at these regattas were keen and enthusiastic, and looking forward to some good competition, after a pretty intense pre-season of training.

INDEPENDENT Members for Indi, Dr Helen Haines has addressed parliament on the need for more assistance to farmers in lowering carbon emissions.

“Agriculture is a vital industry in my electorate,” Dr Haines stated.

“Climate change will inevitably impact agricultural productivity and profitability.

“At the same time, there is a lot of talk about agriculture playing a part in offsetting our nation’s largest emissions under the Government’s Safeguard Mechanism,” Dr Haines said.

“Our farmers currently generate 16 per cent of Australia’s emissions.”

Dr Haines pointed out that countries around the world, are considering tariffs on Australian agricultural imports because we have not done enough for sustainable agricultural production.

“This is why today I am presenting practical action for the government to support farmers taking action on climate change,” Dr Haines said.

“Many farmers I speak to across Indi tell me they want to play a part in reducing our national emissions and are looking to becoming climate neutral themselves.

“They talk to me about the challenges in navigating carbon measurement, auditing and certification and they express genuine concern about the integrity of carbon credits.

“Farmers have also told me that when there is a historical moment of change in agriculture, farmers navigate that change through agricultural extension and farmer groups.”

TOMMY Quick the stroke victim who is riding/driving his recumbent trike to the four most furthest points of Australia will arrive in Euroa this Sunday.

Tommy will be at the Northy Hotel (Sevens Hotel) from 4pm and will hold a meet and greet from 5pm with a special dinner planned.

There will be paellas provided (at cost, to be donated to Tom’s fund) and the beer will be at the bar (cash only at the bar).

There may also be a silent auction and raffles for fundraising after the presentation.

Tommy’s trip which began in 2021 is a 9000km trip to raise funds for stroke support services and raise awareness about strokes in young people.

Tommy was only 12 years of age when he suffered a stroke, leaving him with the task of learning to walk, talk and eat again.

THE monthly Mansfield Clay Target Club shoot was generously sponsored by Mawson’s Concrete and Quarries.

On the day conditions were calm and overcast with intermittent moments of both sun and light showers.

Seven squads were made up from 38 competitors including club representatives from Alexandra, Euroa, Woods Point, Bendigo, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Albury, Colbinabbin, Cohuna, Morwell, Numurkah, Corowa and Werribee.

The big event for the day was a 50 target Ball Trap being a Victoria Clay Target Association, North East Zone Championship event and the zone selection shoot.

Other events included 25 Target Double barrel and 25 Target Point Score.

Things got under way with a five target point score eye opener.

Sharing in the cash divide with perfect scores were Brett Ford (Corowa), Travis Williams (Colbinabbin), Greg Hipwell (Cohuna), Daniel Chinn (Woods Point), Phillip Desmond

(Mansfield), Steve Russell (Morwell), Ryan Logan (Numurkah), Geoff McLure (Alexandra), Bob Glossip (Wangaratta), Ken Skinner (Mansfield), David Luelf (Mansfield), Jo-Anne Ford (Yarrawonga), Chris Climas (Mt Bogong) and Tom McGrath (Alexandra).

It was straight into the 25 Target Point Score Championship.

The winner was fought out with a shoot-off between Rod Bartholomew (Bendigo) and Daniel Chinn (Woods Point) with Bartholomew taking the overall and A grade honors 96/96 and CHinn 95/96 taking out AA grade.

Second AA was Brett Ford 83/84 and second A grade was Ryan Logan 74/75.

B grade was a Mansfield win for both Darren Clarke 72/75 and Rebecca Kirley 70/75.

C grade winners were Tom McGrath 67/75 and Mansfield club president John Desmond 62/75.

Next up was the 25 target Double Barrel Cash Divide with 14 shooters across the grades taking the cash.

AA grade; Brett Ford, Scott McKenzie and Greg Hipwell.

A grade; Cameron Ford, Tony Rohrlach, Geoff McLure, Marty McLachlan, Trevor Newman and Rod Bartholomew.

B grade; Rebecca Kirley, Jo-Anne Ford, Darren Clark and Chris Climas.

C grade had a single winner, Tom Apps.

Following a hearty chicken and salad lunch the main event was underway.

Ball Trap is shot double barrel with more challenging targets thrown at higher speed and greater angles both vertically and horizontally.

This event also decided representatives for the North East team in the state Ball Trap finals.

Brett Ford took overall and A grade with 47.

Taking AA was Al Kidd 44.

B grade winners were Darren Clark 41 and Bob Glossip 40 and C grade Ian Cooksey 44 with Cameron Ford 40.

The NE zone team representatives were awarded from only NE zone shooters and included Scott McKenzie, Phillip Desmond, Al Kidd, Ian Cooksey and Rod Bartholomew with reserves Travis Williams and Ryan Logan.

Overall a great day was had by all with shooters, spectators and family members all participating to ensure a smoothly run day of competition with everyone chipping in with scoring, refereeing and generally helping out.

The day’s competition and championship sashes were generously sponsored by Mawson’s Concrete and Quarries.

Trophies and sashes were presented to winners and place-getters on behalf of our sponsor by club president John Desmond.

Mansfield Clay Target Gun hosts two back-toback events in April, the first a night shoot Saturday, April 15, then on Sunday, April 17 commencing 10.30am is the ANZAC memorial.

High flying show at Benalla SEARING heat may have impacted crowd numbers, but an estimated 2500 people still enjoyed the spectacular aerial displays at the Benalla Airshow on Saturday.

After having been postponed last November due to floods, the highly anticipated event helped mark the 70th year of Benalla being home to the Gliding Club of Victoria in grand style.

large hot air balloons helped cut through the morning dawn at Benalla airport, with their flights watched on by more than 150 early risers.

Aerial action stepped up a gear mid morning as gliders ruled the airways, while things went full throttle as warbirds such as a P51 Mustang, P-40 Kittyhawk and CAC Wirraway danced in the skies throughout the afternoon.

Bennett Airshow, which together with Precision Airmotive in Wangaratta provided many of the warbirds and other vintage military aircraft, said the event had helped showcase aerobatic displays in a wonderful way.

Bruce Cowan of the Gliding Club of Victoria said the airshow had been a great success, thankful for the support of Benalla Rural City Council.

Asked whether the event

could become a permanent fixture on the calendar, Mr Cowan said that could be among discussions to be held as part of a debrief with council.

“Council’s contribution has been enormous...and while having an airshow as part of future Benalla Festivals in November could be raised, it has taken a huge effort to get this one off the ground and it would require a joint decision,” he said.

Euroa Magpies set for practice matches at Memorial Oval Euroa Football Netball Club are playing a series of netball and football practices matches this Saturday at Memorial Oval in Euroa.

At this stage there are three football matches (10am under 18s, 12 noon reserves and 2pm seniors) and five netball matches (15 under 10am, 17 under 11am, B reserve 12noon, B grade 1pm and A grade 2pm).

The club will have its barbecue, hot dogs and hill bar

in operation so get along to watch some practice match action prior to the season proper (round one is April 8 - Easter Saturday - in Mansfield).

The club will have memberships and coridollar tickets available for sale (both these can also be purchased from Nutrien Harcourt’s office in Binney Street, Euroa with Nick Thomson eager to look after you in this regard.

RETURNING STARS: Euroa fans have every reason to be excited ahead of season 2023 with many of its 2022 stars resigning with the club such as A grade best and fairest winner Kellie Davidon.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT Division 5: Avenel played Euroa in the preliminary final at Nagambie last week.

The Euroa lads were far too good on all levels and won convincingly 53 - 22.

Robyn Hyland, Ruth Underwood, Charlie Kemp, Rob Kemp (s) were six down by the 5th end.

A four on the next end bought the deficit to two shots and hope for a close game.

But Euroa had other ideas and bowled superbly for a fourteen shot win 26 - 12.

Nyoli Bell, Mario Gittus, Glen Bell, Graham Lewis (s) won only seven ends for the game and just could not match the accurate bowling of the Euroa team cruising home with a seventeen-shot win, 27 - 10.

Euroa now go on to play Shepparton Park at Nagambie in the grand final.

Fittingly these are the two top teams with Avenel finishing third for the season.

Avenel is hosting two weekend division grand finals this Saturday.

Dookie and Eildon are playing in the Division 5 grand final while Violet Town and Rushworth play off in the division seven grand final.

The green is in excellent condition and being

awarded a grand final is a hats off to greenkeeper Spud Furletti and the small band of ground maintenance crew for their tireless work over many months in preparing the green and the ongoing maintenance required to keep it in tip top condition.

There are only two more sessions left of the popular Friday evening barefoot bowls.

All ages and abilities are catered for and the fun starts at 6.30pm.

Nagambie has two synthetic greens so this was a new experience for most of our newer bowlers.

The quality of bowls over the day was terrific from my perspective with everyone contributing on the green and supporting one another.

The overall result showed this with a win of 48-39.

Next Saturday we will play Rushworth again at Avenel.

GRAND FINAL RESULTS In warm windy conditions

Violet Town were runnersup, 36-49, 2-12.

It was a game of two halves for David Underwood’s team, holding Rushworth 14-0 until the 8th end.

After lunch Rushworth’s Kay Quirk was able to convert a few ends to their advantage.

Unfortunately for Harry Daley’s team they seemed unable to get the speed of the green and were 5-16 down after the 9th end.

As president I am extremely proud of everyone’s bowling efforts this year.

100UP COMPETITION: We had some late withdrawals for this competition, but we ran it and have used it to encourage some of the new bowlers to draw more.

This game is between two players who have four bowls, and the four bowls that lie closest to the jack have a value, from 4-1 point, to total 10 points for each end.

On Sunday Jeremy Boruch and Ken Stanger, first year pennant bowlers, played off in the final.

There were some excellent bowls put down by both players but Ken warmed up, started drawing closer to the

jack and won 100-80.

SOCIAL: Jack attack season four was a huge success, culminating in happy winners on the green and recipients of raffle prizes, donated by many businesses and individuals within the town, thank you.

Again, thanks to Phong Pharmacy who donated the first prize, the club for second prize, and Leanne’s Mowing for third prize.

EUROA GOLF CLUB The Labour Day Tournament concluded last Monday with a Mixed Pinehurst event sponsored by life member George Andrews and family.

Marcus Steers and Justine Collins took out the scratch prize with Gail Allen and Neil Healey runners-up.

Perhaps the oldest women in the field, Jean Duff and her partner Peter McMahon were the handicap winners from Erica Mercer and Kevin Mead.

Despite Sunday’s wet conditions, everyone who supported the club over the weekend enjoyed the course and the hospitality.

On Sunday just passed, Euroa hosted a Dalhousie Country Teams fundraiser.

This was very well supported with the club hosting 108 players.

The busy schedule continues with the GVMV veterans playing their event at our course on Monday.

Last Wednesday, at the conclusion of the men’s stroke round, Neil Healey came out on top of 24 other players with a grand 82 (17) 65 on a countback from Tony Walters.

Nearest the pins and drive and pitches were shared between Frank O’Connor and Ian Sutherland.

Twenty women played a stroke round in glorious autumn weather.

Levenia Redfern 74 just pipped Gail Allen on a countback, with Deb Cox 75 taking out division two.

Bev Jungwirth’s late decision to play in the nine-hole stableford competition paid off, winning with 17 points.

Jenny Thompson and Sarah Bullen shared the nearest the pins and drive and pitches.

In warm conditions on Saturday, both men and women played Stableford rounds.

The men’s competition division one winner was Laurie McMartin with 38 points, while in division two, Don Bubeck won with a very impressive 39 points.

Both Don Bubeck and Cameron Roper won two Nearest the Pins each.

The drive and pitches were taken out by Phil Squires, Glen Burton and Matthew Mills.

The Junior Twilight competition heads into its third round this week.

A great roll-up of 28 players have had the opportunity to play against other young golfers from around the area.

This relaxed environment has resulted in many happy, smiling faces and the improvement in skill and golfing stamina has been very pleasing.

This annual competition will conclude next week.

Please remember, visitors are always welcome at Euroa Golf Club.

NAGAMBIE WOMEN’S GOLF There were 13 players for a round of par.

The winner of A and B grades was Annette Mills with +1.

The winner of C grade with a very impressive +10 was Maureen King.

The 9-hole winner was also Maureen with +3.

Balls down the line for 18 went to Maureen +10, Annette +1 and Moz Fowler -1.

Balls down the line for nine went to Maureen +3, Annette +1 and Carol Wallis.

Chicken Run Results Thursday, March 16 There were over 20 players for a round of Stableford.

The winner was Shaun Bryant on a C/B from Jeff Lodding both with 20pts.

Division two team wins premiership

By AUDREY MCINTOSH THE Euroa Bowls Club had the best of all days on Saturday when they travelled to Stanhope for the division two Goulburn Murray Bowls Saturday Pennant Grand Final, challenging Kyabram and bringing home the premiership.

The scorching temperature of 37 degrees meant the Stanhope green was playing fast adding to the theatre of the contest.

As a result, spectators were promised an enthralling contest between the season’s top sides.

Euroa took an early lead of 30 points after the first round lead by Tony Kingma, this lead was extended in the second round by an additional 18 points.

Andy Houston’s third round team continued Euroa’s winning way, lengthening the margin out to 58 points.

In the fourth and final round Kyabram refused to roll over, challenging Ken Drysdale’s men in the closest battle of the day but once again Euroa came out on top.

The feats of all teams this season are particularly impressive coming off the back of the 2022 floods where the greens and clubhouse were decimated.

All involved should be incredibly proud.

This is not the end of bowls for 2023, Wednesday social bowls will continue to run making use of the greens that are in terrific order and the pleasant weather forecast.

Midweek Bowls: Despite getting to the grand final of the Goulburn Murray bowls Midweek Pennant as the favorites of the Division Five competition in Nagambie, Euroa were unable to prevail.

In a nail-biting contest Euroa were defeated by Shepparton Park 31-32, the barest of all margins.

Euroa will look forward to redeeming this defeat in the 2023/2024 season, well done to all players on their efforts.

Walk, jog or run at Euroa Parkrun This number comprises approximately 50 per cent walkers.

This week, for event number 170, some 23 people ran, jogged and walked the course and the event was made possible by 10 volunteers.

Euroa Parkrun extends a warm welcome to walkers, joggers and runners, as well as people who’d just like to volunteer in an inclusive and supportive environment.

If you’d like a quiet walk alone, that is perfectly okay; however, if you’d like a friendly chat as you go, there is a dedicated ‘parkwalker’ volunteer identified by their pale blue volunteer vest, whose role it is to keep walkers company.

WITH the change of season and cooler weather on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to dust off your walking shoes and join Euroa Parkrun this Saturday at 8am.

Our local parkrun starts and finishes at the barbecue area at Seven Creeks Park.

Euroa Parkrun is particularly fortunate as our 5km course has the reputation as being ‘picturesque’ thanks to the ancient River Red Gums and beautiful bushland which line the creek track.

Right now, the course is looking magnificent and is brimming with wildlife, including a flock of endangered Gang Gang Cockatoos - spotting them is one of the benefits of walking rather than running.

The average number of participants at Euroa Parkrun each week is 35.

By NICK McCABE EUROA horse training facility Lindsay Park trained the winner of the Sharp EIT All-Star Mile, Mt Brightside, at Mooney Valley on Saturday - the world’s richest 1600 metre race, boasting $5 million in prize money.

Entry into the race is gained by votes from the general public, with the top 10 highest vote-getters receiving automatic entry into the race with the five other spots being filled by wildcard runners through a series of ‘win and you’re in’ races.

The All-Star Mile is one of Australia’s most prestigious horse races due to its unique selection criteria and competitive distance range, so to have even one single runner in the field is a tremendous honor for trainers and owners.

This makes the feat of Euroa’s Lindsay Park Racing lead by co-trainers Ben and

JD Hayes having not one, but three runners in the final field even more remarkable.

Of the stables three accepted runners Mr Brightside, Gentleman Roy and So Si Bon, Mr Brightside accumulated the third highest number of votes (9661) within the entire field.

This ensured the five-yearold gelding was to be considered a live winning chance in the race.

Despite being out of the winners circle since August 2022, the Hayes team always remained confident about their star galloper’s chances ahead of the race taking place, a show of faith that was certainly upheld by the horse.

Taking advantage of his inside draw (barrier 2), jockey Luke Currie settled Mr Brightside just off midfield trailing race favourite Alligator Blood, with stablemate Gentleman Roy leading the field.

However, at the 400 meter mark of the tight Mooney Val-

ley track things took a turn and the hearts of the Lindsay Park operation were in their mouths.

Mr Brightside had been shuffled back to sixth and surrounded by heavy traffic which loomed as making his charge to the post incredibly difficult.

But this was not to be the case, Mr Brightside was gently steered into clear running

by Currie and once the field had maneuvered the Mooney Valley corner, the champion gelding was allowed to let down.

With 100 meters in the race remaining, Mr Brightside flashed past Alligator Blood and took to the front where he remained clear, defeating his rivals by half a length.

In doing so, the New Zealand-bred Mr Brightside became the first Victoriantrained galloper to win the All-Star Mile.

Co-trainer JD Hayes said the vicotory “means the world

Mr Brightside will now travel to Sydney where he will
