Power outage to shut down whole of Strathbogie Shire A SCHEDULED power outage is expected to impact people and businesses across the entire shire tomorrow, with no electricity available for towns all across the Strathbogie Shire.

The planned outage, organised by AusNet, is expected to result in no power from 8:30am until 4:30pm, putting work and school days up in the air for many.

According to AusNet, the outages are to perform ‘critical maintenance’ on the Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL).

explains that REFCL work to reduce the risk of fire towards electrical assets.

“A Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL) operates like a big safety switch in the electricity network,” it said.

“In Victoria, it’s being used to help reduce the risk of bushfires.

“Trials took place in 2014

and 2015 and REFCLs have been operating in some locations since 2017.”

The outage extends across the entire shire, with thousands of ‘affected customers’ listed on the AusNet website.

This includes: • 2151 customers in Euroa • 630 in Violet Town • 255 in Strathbogie • 236 in Longwood/ Longwood East • 112 in Ruffy • 30 in Avenel With the power outage

expected to continue throughout the entire day, many local businesses have no choice but to close their doors.

Speaking with businesses in Euroa, the vast majority will be shut tomorrow.

Both the Euroa and Violet Town libraries will be closed, with staff on standby should the outage end earlier.

The Euroa Pharmacy will be closed too, with staff explaining that the lack of power will make

it impossible to put prescriptions through computer, as well as the shop being too dark for customers due to shelves in place in front of several windows.

The Gazette offices and Euroa Printers will be closed too, along with several others across Binney and Railway Streets.

Burton’s IGA will remain open due to them having a generator already in use, as well Thomson’s Betta Home Living.

Ambulance response times remain high across Strathbogie STATE-WIDE ambulance response times have continued to blow out for the third consecutive quarter, with local Code 1 call outs experiencing concerning delays.

Over the October to December quarter the average response time for a Code 1 call out across Strathbogie remained over nine minutes above target time with only 28.3 per cent of ambulances arriving within 15 minutes.

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, said the Andrews Government has run out of people to blame.

“The Premier came to power in 2014 claiming he’d ‘save the minutes that save lives’,” she said.

“Sadly, underinvestment and continual failures in the triple zero system has left our region in a shocking position.

“In 2014, before this government came to power, ambulances were significantly more likely to arrive on time and on average were more than three minutes quicker.

“The government’s record is years of neglect, reports warning of these outcomes sitting unread on desks and Victorians unnecessarily losing their lives.”

Ms Cleeland said the govern-

ment has failed to understand the serious health system issues plaguing regional Victoria.

“Unbelievably this government won’t acknowledge the crisis in our health system and continually plays politics with the health of regional Victorians,” she said.

“Typical of this government, the data was overdue and released the day after Parliament finished sitting.

“They continue to dodge accountability and transparency at every opportunity.

“Three extra minutes of waiting for urgent support is an eternity in an emergency - this can be the difference between life and death.”

The data comes in the wake of a Productivity Commission report that showed Victoria’s system is the worst in the country.

“We have the most expensive ambulance service in the nation but the worst outcomes,” Ms Cleeland said.

“To be waiting nearly 25 minutes on average for an ambulance across Strathbogie is completely unacceptable.

“People in our region should have the confidence to know that when they call triple zero, the phone will be picked up and the ambulance will be there on time.”

Strathbogie council to receive $1.4m roads cash

By GUS RIDDER THE Strathbogie Shire Council is among several local governments who will share in $500 million for community infrastructure and roads projects.

Some $1,439,568 has been allocated towards the local council, an amount comparable to neighbouring regions such as the Rural City of Wangaratta ($1,554,045), Indigo Shire Council ($1,068,549) and Benalla Rural City Council ($975,055).

The funding will come from the fourth round of the federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).

The funding boost has been welcomed by The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) who believe the addi-

ture and benefit every community.

As part of the LRCI funding, the government intends to prioritise $250 million announced in the October 2022 Budget for regional, rural and outer urban area roads.

While appreciated by those in regional communities, Cr Scott believes inner city councils have similar issues and still require a share in this funding.

“All Australian councils are facing significant road maintenance issues, and ALGA will continue to advocate for the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to be available to all local governments,” said Cr Scott.

“Inner city and metropolitan councils are also facing road and infrastructure maintenance

“These funding allocations will be welcomed by councils right across the nation and help them build and revitalise playgrounds, community centres, libraries and sporting facilities,” said ALGA president Cr Linda Scott.

“The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program has been extremely successful, and the direct delivery of funding to councils has ensured the quick and effective delivery of local projects.”

Making the LRCI program permanent is expected to provide councils with necessary resources to address the growing demand for new and revitalised community and road infrastruc-

pressures, and ALGA’s 2021 National State of the Assets report showed that $17.8 billion of Australia’s local roads are in poor condition.

“ALGA is seeking a $300 million per year increase in Roads to Recovery funding that would support all councils to address the poor state of our national road network.

“Recognising the additional challenges faced by disaster-impacted regional councils, ALGA has also proposed a new $250 million per year fund that would support these councils to build back better.”

The Strathbogie Shire has been contacted for comments on their thoughts on the funding and where it will be allocated, however had not commented before the time of publication.

Free kinder in Victoria is underway

By GUS RIDDER UP to 140,000 children and families will benefit from Free Kinder this year thanks to a State Government kindergarten reform program making it easier, and cheaper, to give kids the very best start.

Last month, Minister for Early Childhood and Pre-Prep Ingrid Stitt announced that more than 2,750 early childhood services across the state are offering Free Kinder for Victoria’s three-and four-yearolds in 2023.

“For young families Free Kinder means more choice, more flexibility, and more money in their pockets,” she said.

“With this reform we’re making sure every child gets the early education they need to thrive.

“Free Kinder doesn’t just give our littlest Victorians the best start in life, it also gives parents, particularly mothers, the freedom to go back to work if and when they choose.”

Participating kindergarten programs will receive funding directly from the government, so families are not out-of-pocket and do not have to claim the savings back.

The reform is expected to be good for more than just playbased learning, too - with the Best Start, Best Life investment supporting almost 8,000 construction jobs across the state as new kinders are built across the state.

The ‘Best Start, Best Life’ reform, beyond delivering free kinder for three and four-yearolds, is expected to create 50 government-owned and operated childcare centres across the state, and establishing Pre-Prep, an extra year of playbased learning that will also save families money and help more women back into work.

ARTC calling for feedback on proposed underpass A draft proposal for an underpass design at the Anderson Street rail crossing in Euroa has been released for comment by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).

ARTC is calling on Strathbogie Shire, and in particular Euroa, residents to give their feedback throughout February and Council is encouraging the community to take this opportunity to have its say on the crossing, which is being upgraded as a result of the Inland Rail Project.

IN October 2022 our region was hit by a major flood.

This has had a significant impact, forcing the closure of Kirwans Bridge and the establishment of an exclusion zone under Chinaman’s Bridge.

Kirwans Bridge update Kirwans Bridge is closed while council waits for a structural report from insurance assessors.

The inspection of Kirwans Bridge is taking longer than other bridges (despite continued advocacy), due to the construction of this bridge being very different to other more modern structures.

Council has said the safety of the community is the top priority and will not reopen the bridge until it is safe to do so.

Updates will be provided through council’s website, social media channels and the Community Voice.

A timeline has not yet been set for the re-opening of the bridge.

Chinamans Bridge Update An exclusion zone has been established under Chinaman’s Bridge after a structural assessment found it will collapse.

It is not safe to travel underneath this bridge.

Council is advocating relevant government departments to understand the next steps.

Waterways update Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn River is open; however, an exclusion zone has been established for 100m on either side of Chinaman’s Bridge.

This is because a structural assessment has found the bridge will collapse and is unsafe.

Kirwans Bridge was also assessed and was found to be safe to travel underneath (on the water).

This is separate to the structural assessment council are waiting on to establish the bridge as safe to travel across via a vehicle.

Weir Rd update Council hopes to have the redesign (which will ensure access is not impacted during floods like in October 2022) for approval ASAP and the works are programmed to be completed by June 2023.

Council has said if they need to call an extraordinary meeting to approve a variation and progress work, they will.

Kirwans Bridge Community Panel Council are proud of the work we are doing with the panel.

The panel is not just to provide input into our decision making, it is to ensure a collaborative approach to seek funding for works to occur.

Based on the panel’s input council have established priorities for the bridge’s future, and are working through the tender process to have these options designed and costed.

Council praises Violet Town award win

STRATHBOGIE Shire is now home to national award-winning street art after the Southern Aurora Memorial took out a prize at the National Street Art Awards.

The township’s incredible memorial, recognising the tragic Southern Aurora train crash that took place just after 7am on February 7, 1969, was awarded the Best Monument/Memorial at an online awards ceremony recently.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said council was incredibly proud of the efforts of all those involved in the Southern Aurora Memorial in Violet Town.

“Not only is it fantastic for Victoria to be recognised, but for our little township to

be recognised on a national scale is just incredible,” she said.

“We know a huge amount of hard work and dedication has gone into making the Southern Aurora Memorial what it is - a fantastic area paying tribute to those who lost their lives and those who supported rescue efforts after the tragic train collision in 1969.”

The incident involved the head-on collision between the intercity overnight passenger express Southern Aurora and a goods train.

There were nine fatalities and virtually all staff and passengers were injured, although official figures only recorded 117 officially injured.

Staff and passengers from

the train, locals from the surrounding area and passers-by put in a massive voluntary effort to fight fires, rescue people, and provide first aid and other support.

“The Australian Street Art Awards described it best when they said Violet Town has shown respect and pride to those involved in this horrific tragedy,” Cr Binks said.

“We are so incredibly proud to have such amazing community members who drive projects such as this and all those involved are incredibly deserving of this national gong.”

Ringbarking concern over trees SEVERAL trees planted by local conservationist Ray Thomas and other environmentally motivated individuals around Euroa have been found dead, with suggestions being made that their demise was caused deliberately.

Precise, circular saw markings around the trunks of the trees, a process known as ringbarking, can be found on nearly all of the dead trees, along with evidence that the weed-killer ‘round up’ has been used too.

Mr Thomas, and several other like-minded Euroa locals, have regularly planted trees across town, making a particular effort not to place them in intrusive locations.

“I really make sure that the trees are planted in areas where they won’t inconvenience people,” he said.

“I can understand people being upset if their view of the creek is blocked or if they are planted too close to a path or road.

“I’ve made an effort to do this with every tree planted but it hasn’t seemed to matter.”

The trees vary in age and location, with Mr Thomas saying that he is finding more dead trees every day.

“It doesn’t seem to

matter where I go, I’m finding these trees dead,” he said.

“Myself and others are going out to water these trees and it’s terrible what we’re finding.

“Most recently, I found a four year old banksia that had been ringbarked and had round-up placed on it just across from the tennis courts.

“This isn’t an easy tree to replace due to its age.”

Mr Thomas regularly runs programs with local school children, teaching them about the positives of conservation and the local fauna and flora.

Now he is concerned that these programs may all be in vain, with worries that silver banksias planted by the students may be the next trees targeted.

“It’s something I don’t want to tell the children about,” he said.

“I want them to still feel positive about what they are doing.”

Mr Thomas expressed his disappointment with what is happening, hoping that something can be done to prevent it in the future.

“It’s very sad and hard to understand,” he said.

“From what I see it is clearly malicious behaviour.”

(Euroa Township) There was zero rainfall recorded at Euroa by the Bureau of Meteorology for the week until 9am Monday.

Listening to locals is the right way to go I AM delighted to read in The Euroa Gazette that the ARTC Inland Rail Project is listening to us, the townsfolk of Euroa, regarding the Anderson St overpass being replaced by an underpass.

I also welcome their invitation for us to speak to them directly regarding plans for water mitigation and oversize truck routes.

I urge you to drop into the Euroa Shopfront at 46 Binney St, Euroa on any Tuesday of February from 10am-3pm (or some Wednesdays and Thursdays) and reinforce loud and clear that we believe the underpass is achievable.

To be able to remove that divisive overpass, and restore our beautiful town to

what it was, would be an achievement we could all be proud of.

While the official Clean Up Australia Day will be held on Sunday, March 5, I am already aware of a number of local events being held across our region.

You can join or register your own clean

up event online at www.cleanup.org.au.

Those who register will be sent a “clean up kit” to assist with the running of their event.

There are also t-shirts available for those who want to look the part.

Clean Up Australia Day events can be led by local community groups, schools and even individuals who are willing to organise a clean-up site.

As your local member of parliament, it brings me great pride to see members of our community showing initiative and making a difference in such a way.

Thank you to everyone who is hosting or taking part in helping to care for our environment and keeping our home beautiful.

ON a beautiful day last Tuesday, a few Euroa Probus members travelled to Nagambie Rowing Club to have an enjoyable lunch in the bistro, overlooking Lake Nagambie.

The lunch was part of Probus’ regular outings and one of many exciting events upcoming for members.

The Probus club has recently resumed activities for 2023, meeting for the

first time this year in early February.

Euroa Probus Club meets every fourth Monday of the month at the Uniting Church Hall, Kirkland Avenue.

The group’s next meeting

will be held on Monday, February 27 with new members very welcome and encouraged to attend.

The group’s AGM will be held in March when positions become vacant.

INDEPENDENT Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines has successfully amended the government’s housing package bills to include better representation of regional, rural and remote Australia.

The government housing package, which aims to build 30,000 social and affordable houses in its first five years, passed the House of Representatives on Thursday morning.

“Housing is a critical issue in Indi,” Dr Haines said.

“It is at crisis level.

“Everywhere I go, whether it’s a small town or a large regional centre, people talk to me about how hard it is to find a place to live that is affordable and appropriate.

“Addressing the housing crisis is the first step to addressing other issues we face, like finding health workers or growing our businesses.

“I am working with the government to make sure regional

Australia isn’t left out of these reforms.

“The former government’s version of the housing fund only spent 25 per cent of the $1 billion they promised and none of that came to Indi.

“There was no specific funding directed to regional and rural Australia.

“We can’t have another missed opportunity with this fund.”

Dr Haines moved a series of amendments to the bills creating the Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Supply and Affordability Council to ensure housing in regional, rural and remote Australia is properly funded and considered.

“My amendments respond to the issues in the housing sector experienced in regional Australia and make sure that the fund is spent in the most effective way possible,” Dr Haines said.

Dr Haines moved a series of

amendments to the bills, including changes that would: • Add an object of the Housing Australia Future Fund Act to provide a funding mechanism for the acute housing needs of Australians living in regional, rural and remote Australia.

• Add an object of the Housing Australia Future Fund Act to include critical enabling infrastructure for new social and affordable housing in regional, rural and remote Australia.

• Ensure the needs of regional, rural and remote Australia are explicitly considered under the Bills The successful amendments agreed to by the government will: • Ensure at least one member of the National Housing Supply and Affordability Council has demonstrated and relevant experience or expertise in housing needs in regional, rural and remote Australia.

• Ensure the National Hous-

ing Supply and Affordability Council considers the impacts of geographical location (e.g. regional, rural or remote location) on housing supply and affordability and on the demand for affordable housing.

Housing Minister Julie Collins said in Parliament more work would be done in the Senate process on how the package will address housing issues in regional Australia and Dr Haines is continuing work on the full suite of amendments.

“I’m optimistic on these amendments and will work with Senators to keep up the fight for these changes,” Dr Haines said.

“I am disappointed National MPs and most Liberal MPs representing regional seats did not support my amendments.

“Only the Member for Bass Bridget Archer stood up for her regional community to support my improvements, while other MPs failed to show up for their electorates.”

Show and Shine shake up THE first committee meeting of the Australian National Show and Shine for 2023, held last Wednesday, has seen major changes with the retirement of five senior committee members.

Those leaving were president Ross Holt, vice president Ray Read, secretary Bill Ely, life member Peter Byrne and ‘Area 5’ manager Tony Clota.

Several of these members, especially Mr Holt and Mr Read, were undertaking multiple roles in the ongoing administration and running of the annual event, which last year attracted around 8000 visitors to the Strathbogie Shire.

The committee meeting also saw the election of a new executive team for 2023.

Ian Langlands taken the chair as new president, and Peter Gregson will take up the vice president’s position.

The secretary and treasurer positions will be filled at the next committee meeting, following the induction of new show and shine members.

Eight committee members will carry over from last year.

The new committee has commenced planning for the 2023 show, with the theme to be ‘The 1960s’.

Once again, this may be celebrated by ‘Best 1960s’ tro-

phies for cars and bikes, together with the very popular fashion parade of 1960s gear.

Mr Langlands said that the immediate focus for the Australian National Show and Shine committee will be the priority enlistment of new members in a concerted recruitment campaign.

“Running the Euroa Show and Shine event each year is becoming more complex and demanding, and additional people will be required,” Mr Langlands said.

The magnificent Seven Creeks Park areas have been confirmed as the committee’s preferred location for the show.

Over coming weeks, the committee will be reviewing the list of trophies for 2023 and will also conduct a review of entry prices.

The Australian National Show and Shine’s event is programmed for Sunday, October 1, in keeping with the traditional date of ‘First Sunday in October’.

Euroa RSL elects new committee MEMBERS and invited guests attended the annual general meeting of the Returned and Services League (RSL), Euroa branch last week.

The meeting was held in the Strathbogie Shire committee room due to the continuing unavailability of the RSL rooms in Kirkland Avenue following the October flooding.

Remediation and repairs are continuing at the RSL however these are taking longer than anticipated as the grounds beneath the floor space are drying out more slowly than expected.

RSL president Phil Munt addressed the AGM, giving his report on the previous year’s activities.

Following the easing of covid restrictions, the RSL was once again able to hold the traditional public ANZAC Day Dawn Service and mid-morning services.

These were both well attended, as was the Remembrance Day Service on November 11.

Mr Munt also reported on the continuing community welfare and support that the RSL provides to local veterans and their families.

In his address, Mr Munt particularly thanked the local community for its continuing support of this small branch.

RSL AGM: Phil Munt was re-elected as president of the RSL - Euroa branch at last week’s AGM. The ANZAC Day and Poppy Day badge sales were well supported with demand exceeding supply.

As is the practice at Annual General Meetings, the

incumbent executive and committee positions were all declared vacant, and the positions were opened for election.

Mr Munt was re-elected

to serve another term as president, continuing his service to the Euroa RSL over many years.

retary, again continuing a long association with the local RSL. Mr John Bruns and Mr Greg Musgrove were elected as vice-presidents.

The new RSL executive and committee now look forward to the coming year; to restoring the RSL rooms, and to returning to the venue for future meetings.

In the interim, the traditional public ANZAC Day Services will continue, albeit without access to the RSL Rooms.

The RSL will be erecting marquees on the grounds around the RSL and along the Seven Creek for this years dawn and morning services, to ensure adequate weather protection and to also provide a focal point for the traditional “gun-fire breakfast” which we hope will make a return this year following the lifting of all COVID restrictions.

The RSL meets once per month for a formal meeting and holds more casual gettogethers each month when everyone can get together and have a good chat.

Everyone is invited and if you are interested in becoming an RSL Member of volunteering to assist the RSL in any way, the RSL would welcome your enquiry.

The next meeting of the RSL Euroa Branch will be held at 2pm on March 13 at the Strathbogie Shire offices.

Visitors are always welcome as are guest speakers.

Celebrating Euroa Health’s graduates profile to meet their growing needs, and to showcase a rewarding career.

The 2022 graduates included individuals becoming qualified to make a complete career change or existing staff members who undertook further education to add to their existing qualifications.

Encouragement from senior staff to identify opportunities for staff was also an important factor for students to make the decision to study.

Staff member Annette Shaw from Nagambie had considered a career change for some time after 18 years of working in shearing teams across the district.

Annette’s background of living in North East Victoria provided her with many opportunities to relate to the rural lifestyle of staff, patients and residents at Euroa Health and saw her reconnect with owners of farming properties she worked with as they become residents at GraniteHill.

Annette now proudly has a Certificate IV in Ageing Support and has thoroughly enjoyed the career change and is keen to undertake further training in the coming year.

Interim chief executive officer Melissa Seymour was thrilled with the graduating class and their efforts throughout the training process.

“We’re proud of each of the 2022 graduates who all bring different experience to us as they come to work at Euroa Health through

their previous careers and life experiences,” she said.

“We heard from a number of the staff members that undertook the opportunity study that it enabled them to change their career and bring real purpose to their work, which simply would not have been possible without the ability to work at Euroa Health and undertake placement as a paid employee.”

Euroa Health together with Partners in Training acknowledges that fam-

Euroa Health are busy in the Community The wheels of the bus at Euroa Health have been very busy in the last couple of months with our Residents, Warm Water Exercise Group and the Community Services who are all out and about in the community.

GraniteHIll Residents recently have visited the Southern Aurora Memorial in Violet Town, Polly Mcquinns and the Strathbogie township. Also, a visit to Avenel was enjoyed by all to see the development of the town through the mushroom farm, bowls club, golf course and the schools all from the air-conditioned comfort of our bus.

Avenel local Joyce White also took Residents on a tour of her home in Avenel where she lived prior to moving to GraniteHill and showed fellow Residents her garden which showcased her magnificent rose garden and says that “I think the bus trips are wonderful something for everyone to see” But by far the best tour of all was seeing the Christmas lights and seeing houses in Euroa decorated so beautifully.

EXHIBITION OPENING: Bruce Hargrave’s newest exhibition will open on Sunday, March 5, titled “Beauty and Beyond”.

LOCAL Euroa artist Bruce Hargrave will be opening his latest watercolour exhibition, “Beauty and Beyond”, at the BackArt Gallery in Violet Town at the start of next month.

The exhibition, which showcases a series of watercolour paintings of much-loved local locations and icons, will be opened on Sunday, March 5 at the Cowslip Street gallery.

10 per cent of proceeds from sales of the art work will be donated to the Violet Town Primary School Arts Award fund, providing a fantastic opportunity for young students to progress their artistic endeavours.

Mr Hargrave’s exhibitions have often provided generous windfalls for local organisations, with the Euroa Citizens Band receiving $2000 from his previous exhibition titled, “Euroa in Watercolour”.

Stacey Willaton, the new principal of the local school, will be opening the exhibition which will remain open on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10am-2pm until Saturday, March 25.

The opening will begin at 2:30 on Sunday, March 5.

Nicholls MP hosting climate summit MEMBER for Nicholls Sam Birrell will bring business and community leaders together this week for a Climate Leadership and Jobs Summit.

The two-day climate summit kicks off on Thursday and seeks to give leaders from across Nicholls the opportunity to come together, to learn, connect and make shared plans and strategies to ensure the region benefits as the world moves to a lower emissions economy.

“I’m determined to create relationships between energy experts and leaders in Nicholls to ensure jobs, profitability and productivity grow in our region long into the future,” Mr Birrell said.

“In my Maiden Speech I stated climate change was a key challenge facing Australia and I emphasised that the discussions need to be about how we act, not if we act.

“This summit will discuss the how, touching on new technologies and applications.”

Hosted in Shepparton, the event will see 13 leading climate researchers, scientists, experts and community leaders speak and includes Dr Sarah Birrell Ivory - director of the University of Edinburgh Centre for Business, Climate

Change and Sustainability, Professor Mark Howden director, Climate Change Institute at Australian National University and Heidi Lee - chief executive officer of Beyond Zero Emissions.

Guests will get in depth insights from speakers and will have two days to engage one-on-one to ensure locals get the most out of experts’ time and questions don’t go unanswered.

The summit aims to focus on how the GoulburnMurray region can continue to grasp the new economic opportunities as Australia moves to net zero by 2050 with bipartisan support.

The event has also attracted former premiership winning AFL Player Jordan Roughhead who has studied the impact of consumerism on the environment, supports the Solar Sports Report and regularly writes publicly about stronger action on climate change.

“It’s great to have high profile people like Jordan take interest and it will be great to have him share his knowledge on how to create a more sustainable future for Nicholls,” Mr Birrell said.

MY WRITINGS: I am to have Laser eye treatment next month on my eye that has a problem due to my long term diabetes.

So I said to myself I better get a wriggle on and finish editing my “Activities in Avenel” 1980’s year memories booklet, and get cracking on my “Mum’s Memoirs” while my eyes and hands can still do it.

The hands are having neuropathy spasms most of the day now and my hand writing and calligraphy talents are diminishing.

So thank God I can still type but the fingers are having trouble with spelling!

I’d like to celebrate my 40 years as a local social writer for district papers next year.

KELVINGROVE VILLAGE NEWS: I have gotten out my oil paintings and memorabilia for the inaugural Art and Craft Show I am organising for our Kelvingrove Village.

I am trying to encourage our older folk to bring out the wonderful things they have created, made or collected for a show in our hall on Saturday, March 25. It will be open to the public from 1.30pm-4.30pm. $2 entry includes light afternoon tea.

Nagambie Library mural unveiled

By DIANE GRANT IN August of last year, the Gazette caught up with three artists from the Nagambie Lakes Art Group who had undertaken the project of painting a mural for the Nagambie Library outer wall.

The fruits of their labour were on show at the unveiling of the mural on Tuesday, February 14 with a small crowd including some key figures from the region.

Kevin Preece, chief executive of the Goulburn Valley library group, local shire councillors David Andrews and Reg Dickinson, Annabelle Cleeland MP, and Nagambie Lakes Community House president Edna James and members of the and general public were all in attendance.

At the unveiling, Mr Preece, mural designer and artist Trudy Oldaker, Nagambie librarian Catherine Langdon and Ms James gave short speeches about the community project and thanked all involved.

This mural project came about in March 2019 when local art group member Trudy Oldaker and other artists were asked by librarian Cath Langdon to paint a mural when visiting the Nagambie Library.

This had been an idea of Ms Langdon’s who saw silo art and other murals in other towns.

By the end of 2019, four artists of the group put in proposals to Cathy Langdon at the library who then passed them onto the regional library service in Shepparton, which Nagambie Library comes under.

The artists did not hear from anyone involved with the library mural until March 2022.

Trudy Oldaker’s design was accepted as the preferred mural and she was very pleased that her creative presentation book showed the judges the creativeness of her talent for such a project.

A donation by a generous person via the Nagambie Lakes Community House, for a community based project, equivalent to the proposed grant was given for the mural by the Community House to allow Trudy’s created work at last to be sketched onto marine ply panels sawn by Peter Loughnane and to buy paint and brushes to start on the artwork.

When grandmother Trudy learnt that her plan had been approved she enlisted local artists Valma Crerar, Wendy Cook, Joan Loughnane and some other local artists, Peter Loughnane and her own grandchildren to make it happen.

Those who attended the mural unveiling were able to view it up close after the formal proceedings and enjoy some light refreshments in the library while congratulating the artists and support people who helped make the mural a reality.

By LONGWOOD ACTION GROUP THE next general meeting of the Longwood Action Group will be held on February 22 at the Longwood Community Centre - all welcome.

The Longwood Wine, Beer and Cider Festival will be held this Saturday, February 25 at the Longwood Recreation Centre commencing at 2pm until 8pm.

This is a market-style outdoor event that showcases local and regional craft beer, local wine, and ciders, served by the producer, plus quality food vendors from the area, live music and children’s activities.

Proceeds from the festival go to the Longwood Football Netball Club, plus benefits to other local community groups and business.

Tickets are on sale via our ticket links for $25 presale.

Tickets are available at the gate for $30.

All patrons must QR Code on way in.

Under 18s are FREE! We encourage all ages to come along and there will be catering for the young ones also.

Under 18s do need to purchase a free ticket this year, for recording purposes.

As this is a licensed event, under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times and will not be served at the bars - ID will be checked.

On this day also, the Longwood Football Netball Club will be hosting a preseason match against the Coburg Football Netball Club, so make a real day out of it by coming along to support our local teams.

Games will commence at 12pm.

Unfortunately, the Longwood Primary School Parents Club has been inoperative for the last few years.

With an increase in families at the school we are looking to getting it up and running again.

Parents’ clubs promote the welfare of, and provide support to, the school and its community.

Parents are key partners in their child’s learning.

By interacting with the school and other parents, parents’ club members can use their skills and experience to work collaboratively with others in supporting the school and its students and build a sense of community within the school.

The role of a parents’ club is threefold: • To provide support, in various forms, for the school, its students and community, including raising funds for the benefit of the school • To work in cooperation with the principal, staff and school council in building effective partnerships between home and school • To encourage diversity by getting to know the parents of other children at the school, and to support the operation of the school If you are interested in being

involved in Parents Club please let your child’s teacher know, thank you.

Breakfast Club commenced on Thursday, February 9 at 8.30am, and we held each Wednesday of the term.

This is a great opportunity for our students to come together before school to share breakfast in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Students can partake in cereals, fruit, toast, eggs, spaghetti/baked beans, just to name a few of the dishes on offer.

Pancake Day was its usual yummy event and Jack Attack at the Bowls Club is running well after a soggy first week.

The Internet session last week conducted by NBN staff was well attended.

The staff announced two improvements to our NBN. Coverage from our High Street tower will double - from 14 km to 28 km for line-of-sight communications.

The internet providers will be offering a new higher speed offering in coming weeks.

Not sure how these actions will address slow speeds in Violet Town during school holidays but you never know!

Kerry Butler’s Chair Yoga and Gentle Yoga sessions have both started up again.

Chair yoga - Tuesdays, 11am in the Hall supper room.

This is a half hour session, and all movements are from a seated position with classes costing $5.

Gentle yoga is Thursdays, 10am, supper room.

Modified movements from the Satyananda yoga tradition plus a relaxing yoga nidra meditation to finish.

$1.6 million in bushfire funding awarded to Indi MORE than $1.6 million in new bushfire recovery funding has been awarded to projects in communities impacted by the Black Summer bushfires in Indi.

Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines celebrated the announcement of the third and final round of the Local Community Projects Grants program, which was jointly funded by the Victorian and Federal Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

“These projects will continue the recovery effort in communities affected by the Black Summer bushfires, covering community recreation and sport, digital support for businesses and energy resilience during future emergencies,” Dr Haines said.

“I was proud to support some of these projects through letters of support, and I look forward to seeing the changes all of these projects will make to their towns.

“Bushfire recovery takes a long time and it’s important that Governments continue to support these communities over time.”

INDI BUSHFIRE RELIEF: Indi MP Helen Haines has celebrated the confirmation of $1.6 million in bushfire relief funding that was confirmed last week. added to the total of bushfire funding that had already been allocated to Indi.

“More than $121 million in bushfire recovery funding has flowed to Indi since the Black Summer bushfires, including for community-building projects like the ones funded in this latest round,” she said.

“It is positive to see funding awarded for the Tintaldra Recreation Reserve, which was wrongly rejected for funding by the former Federal Government due to a technicality about their ABN.”

Projects in Indi to be awarded funding are: • $301,000 to Alpine Health for the installation of Outdoor Fitness Equipment (OFE) in Porepunkah and Myrtleford.

• $327,004 to Corryong Sporting Complex Incorporated for upgrades to the Corryong Golf Course that will support community healing and recovery through the encouraging of healthy activities and connection.

• $183,101 for the Upper Murray Region Community Catering Hub to build a shed to house ca-

tering equipment that the community will have low-cost access to during emergencies and for public events and training.

• $225,000 to Startup Shakeup Ltd for provision of in region digital training for small businesses and community organisations within Towong and Alpine Shires.

• $304,420 to Tintaldra Recreation Reserve Committee of Management for re-establishment and refurbishment of the Recreation Reserve and assets.

• $276,543 to Totally Renewable Yackandandah for the Yackandandah Emergency Readiness project, which will improve resilience and provide additional community services by increasing capacity to maintain and provide power supplies during times of emergency or disruption.

The Local Community Projects Grants, funded under the Local Economic Recovery (LER) program, funds local projects vital for community recovery in bushfire-affected regions.

The projects funded under this program build a sense of community pride and connectedness, supporting the critical role communities play in leading their own recovery.

GOULBURN–Murray Water (GMW) is currently asking customers for feedback on proposed service standards, capital projects and billing options to help develop its Pricing Submission 2024–28.

GMW is required to develop a Pricing Submission every four years and it outlines the prices and level of services customers can expect GMW to provide for the upcoming regulatory period.

GMW Business and Finance general manager Michael Gomez said they have sought to make it as simple as possible for customers to provide feedback.

"From previous customer engagement and speaking to our Water Services Committees it has been clear there is a strong preference for engagement to be centred online," he said.

"Customers can also call us on 1800 013 357, where one of our staff can take them through the Pricing Submission topics and lodge their feedback."

GOULBURN Valley Libraries has appointed Felicity Macchion as their new chief executive officer, replacing the outgoing Kevin Preece, who will retire from the position in March.

Ms Macchion is a recognised library leader and has recently been the manager of libraries at Yarra City Council in Melbourne and has many years of library and management experience.

Chairperson of Goulburn Valley Libraries Ms Julie Brooks spoke glowingly about what Ms Macchion will bring to the role.

“Ms Macchion brings a wealth of library leadership and experience to our organisation,” she said.

“Felicity will be able to hit the ground running as she is very familiar with our operating environment.

“Ms Macchion is recognised as a significant contributor to state-wide library projects and is currently an executive on the Public Libraries Victoria Board (the peak body representing all library services in Victo-

Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers play Numurkah fields

By ROLF WEBER ONE hundred and two veteran golfers contested at Numurkah Golf Club on Monday, February 13 in very pleasant weather.

It was an excellent number considering the early tee time of 9am for our members that have to travel from the likes of Euroa and Deniliquin.

This is the end of the summer tee-time so we now revert to a 9:30am assembly for 10am tee.

The fairways and greens were in excellent condition, a credit to the members at Numurkah because the course mainte-

nance is all volunteer effort.

Some excellent scores were recorded and home ground advantage was also telling in the results.

The A-Grade winner was Mark Hegarty of Numurkah with 35 stableford points from Adam Farrell of Numurkah with 34 points.

The B-Grade winner was Denis Prosser of Numurkah with 39 pts from Shane Pollock, Kialla at 38 pts.

The C-Grade winner was Ray Gourlay of Kialla at 41 pts; with John Phillips of Mooroopna, runner-up with 35 pts.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 114 metre long 18th hole

where Greg Birks from Shepparton; Dennis Prosser of Numurkah and Brian Reiners of Kialla picked up the wine in A, B and C grade respectively.

SCOREBOARD BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT - DIVISION FIVE AVENEL jumped into third place on the ladder with a win away against East Shepparton 12 - 40 to 2 - 33.

With the completion of the home and away season Avenel have a week off before the finals begin on Tuesday, February 28.

Marg Harrison, Marion Gittus, Ruth Underwood, Glen Bell (s) after being ahead by only two shots on the 12th end stormed home over the last nine ends scoring 18 shots to three for a resounding win 29 - 12.

Norm Billingsley, Ron Harrison, Charlie Kemp, Rob Kemp (s) found the going a little tougher.

Losing six straight ends before lunch had East Shepparton with a healthy lead at the break for lunch.

In the second half Avenel won seven shots to one but it was not enough to win the game losing 11 - 21.

MIDWEEK PENNANT - DIVISION THREE AVENEL needed the win against Kyabram to go into fourth spot on the ladder but Kyabram were too good on the day and won convincingly 16 - 86 to 0 - 69.

Nyoli Bell, Jenny Furletti, Graham Lewis, Geoff Hateley (s) led for the first nine ends, then Kyabram had the lead for the next nine ends before Avenel got a five to take the lead back on the 19th end.

Avenel hung on to a slight lead until Kyabram got a three on the last end to win by two, 24 - 22.

In a close game, Fay Hatelely, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) took the lead by one shot after scoring a five on the 14th end.

Kyabram answered back scoring 10 shots over the next five consecutive ends for an eight-shot lead.

The remaining ends were closely fought out, but Kyabram were the better team and won the game 30 - 24.

Pam Pedder, Rusty Schwab, Spud Furletti, Dennis McGregor (s) was also involved in a close tussle all game.

Being only two down on the 23rd end, Kyabram once again finished strongly scoring six over the last two ends for a 32 - 23 win.

WEEKEND PENNANT - DIVISION SEVEN IT was a tough ask for Avenel playing against a powered-up Seymour team.

The final of the mens pairs was played last Sunday between Kyle Pedder and Noel Slater played against Brett and Josh McDonald.

The winners in a close contest were Noel and Kyle.

Congratulations to Kyle for his first club championship win.

The way he played on Sunday indicates there will be many more for him in the future.

Proof is on the scorecard as Seymour had a particularly strong rink that got them across the line.

Avenel 2 - 34 lost to Seymour 12 - 39.

Seymour launched a late challenge to get within one shot however Avenel were good enough to hold on for a two shot win 19 - 17.

Norm Billingsley, Marion Gittus, Charlie Kemp, Rob Kemp (s) was up against it with a mid-week division 1 skip and current club champion introduced into Seymour’s division seven team.

Seymour won the first six ends to be up 12 - 0.

Avenel chased Seymour down winning five of the last six ends but the ask was too big, losing to Seymour 15 - 22.

Next Saturday is the last match of the home and away season and a win is vital for Avenel to have a chance of playing in the finals.

The best eight bowlers from the division 7 squad who have played in this division all season will be selected for this crucial return game against Seymour.

WEEKEND PENNANT - DIVISION THREE AN away game at Nagambie resulted in a four rink win for the hosts 18 - 124 to 0 - 87.

Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) won only ten ends losing 19 - 36 against a very accurate Nagambie rink.

Nine hole balls down the line went to Jane 20, Carol 18 and Moz also 18.

The nearest the pin on the 8th was Moz and on the 16th Irene.

CHICKEN RUN - FEBRUARY 16 THERE were 25 players for a round of Par. The winner was Chris Roberts on a triple countback from Mick O’Connell and Terry Clonan all on +2.

The nearest the pin on the 13th was Irene Keogh and on the 16th Karyn Thompson.

The Foursomes were a great success with 18 pairs contesting the alternating shot two ball, the late surge of summer weather continued with a gentle breeze that was not enough to affect scoring.

The winning pair of Shaun Bryant and David Love completed the 18 hole with little drama.

Both drove the ball well and drained good puts when needed for a 79-11.5-67.5 winning total.

Runners up Jeff Mills and Phil Neville stumbled into second with a 87-18-69.

Euroa puts up a gallant fight in semi loss to Tatura

By GRANT DAVEY Euroa 10/76 defeated by Tatura 8/79 TOP of the ladder Euroa turned up full of confidence after an undefeated season playing against fourth placed Tatura in the 14A grade semi-final.

Tatura won the toss and sent Euroa in with an altered batting line up due to gun player Ethan Saxon missing on school duties.

The steamy conditions and a new ball allowed for some movement with a lot of wides and byes seeing Euroa off to a solid start before Ollie Spike Wilson was caught

for a duck Euroa 1/10.

Jack Walters was next in and continued his good form with the bat.

He and captain Ollie Swain steadied the ship before Ollie was bowled for nine Euroa in trouble 2/27.

Euroa’s batsmen then collapsed W Davey 1, K Ross 4, O Rob 5, H Wolfenden 0, P Murphy 1, S Mills 0, C Goodall 0 Euroa 9/55.

Jack Walters remained calm under pressure and sensed it was his time to push the score along.

He and our last batsmen Darby Hoare scored a much needed 20 run partnership for the last wicket before

Jack Walters was bowled for 28 playing his best innings of the season.

Euroa was all out for 76 in 25 overs.

Tatura started strongly with our strike bowlers Ollie Spike Wilson and Ollie Swain unable to penetrate the Tatura defence.

An opening 23 run partnership had Euroa under pressure before Cooper Goodall struck Tatura 1/23.

Patrick Murphy then had the next batsmen out for duck with a classic catch from Will Davey.

Tatura continued to build small partnerships and went into the lunch

break with their tails up.

Patrick Murphy then claimed the prized scalp of the opening batsmen for 25, Tatura 3/33.

Jack Walters took the gloves off and sent down a thunderbolt to remove the middle stump of the batsmen, leaving Tatura nervous at 4/41.

Euroa could sense they were still in the game and started to get very noisy in the field.

Patrick Murphy showed why he is one of Euroa’s strike bowlers and dismissed the inform Tatura batsmen for his third wicket Tatura wobbling at 5/58.

Haimi Wolfenden continued to probe the Tatura

defence with his line and length bowling.

With Tatura only needing to score at one run per over, Euroa needed quick wickets.

The leadership team decided to bring the strike bowlers back on.

Ollie Swain showed why he’s regarded as a leader and took out the middle stump of R Hearn 15 making Tatura very nervous at 6/66.

Ollie Spike Wilson who bowled without luck all day then got one to nip back in and trapped the batsmen plumb lbw, Tatura trembling 7/70.

Tatura scored five more runs before captain Swain took a terrific caught and

bowled Tatura shaking at 8/75 needing two runs for victory.

Unfortunately for Euroa, their batsmen drove one over the fieldsmen to win the game by 2 wickets Tatura 8/79 to Euroa 76.

Credit to the Euroa boys who never gave up.

Coach Robertson said, “Euroa never gave up; they should be very proud of their season and I’m already looking forward to coaching the boys again next year.”

Euroa puts up a fight in Strathbogie

By MARK BORTHWICK IN Division A, Euroa Lawn played Strathbogie at Strathbogie.

Melinda Creevey and Ro Ellis got pipped in a tight one against Mayra Walsh and Meg Ford, whilst the Bogie men dominated the men’s sets all afternoon.

Kim Saxon and Melinda won the only set for Euroa 8-4 and Kim finished off the day in a tie breaker

with Garry Cummins.

It was a competitive display by Euroa, but Strathbogie won the crucial games to win by 28.

First and second played each other with what should have been a close match, but Moglonemby had injuries to number one couple Grant and Kristen Davey which put pressure on the team.

St Pauls took advantage with Sarah Ternes and Faye Mollison winning 8-3 over

Sue Vaughan and Marlene Hanrahan.

Keighan Hicks and Michael Nolan fought back for Mogs 8-4 over Scott Watson and Declan Weston.

Ella Hill had a near perfect day for St Pauls, winning all three sets and only conceding four games for the afternoon.

St Pauls ran out winners by 23 games.

Gooram played Longwood and with a late withdrawal, Chris Ellis played as a man

and fought gamely all afternoon.

Jacob Tarran and Rod Andrews played great tennis all afternoon with Kim McCabe best on ground for Gooram winning all her sets.

The match went down to the wire with Longwood sliding in by four games.

In Division B, St Pauls played Gardens Royal with Jim Gall and Greg Rowe winning their only set for the day.

fought hard to go down in a tie breaker.

Gardens were very good and went on to win by 32 games which was not an ideal lead into finals.

Euroa Lawn were at home to Avenel with Debbie Seach and Molly Redfern firing up 8-2 whilst Dan Mawson and Craig Durkin went down in a tight one 6-8.

Dan backed up with Harrison Mills 8-3.

It was a close afternoon with it going to the wire, but Avenel hung on to win by one set and equal on games.

Ladies Day success at Euroa Cricket Club EUROA Cricket Club recently held a very successful Ladies Day event, raising money for the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

A dedicated organising committee worked for several weeks putting together a very successful afternoon.

The day including many raffle prizes and a silent auction, with ‘Bearded Ducks’ entertaining the participants with their live music.

Guest speaker and breast care nurse Michelle Parish spoke about breast care and everyone appreciated her information.

A fashion parade sponsored by Burtons Clothing was just one of the enter-

taining offerings on for the afternoon.

President of the cricket club Lucas Paul thanked the committee, and everyone present for their support.
