RESIDENTS will soon kiss goodbye to Strathbogie Shire’s five wards, with the State Government announcing Strathbogie Shire Council will adopt an unsubdivided electoral structure ahead of the October 2024 council elections – a move that has already drawn praise and criticism from different quarters.

Supporters of the change have said it could tackle the parochialism and division that contributed to the recent suspension of the shire’s councillors, while critics including Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle

Cleeland have said the move will result in less populated areas missing out on gaining a council representative, a rise in campaigning costs and the increased politicisation of council elections.

Following a review prompted by changes in the Local Government Act 2020, the State Government last week announced Strathbogie

Shire Council would be one of five councils to move to an unsubdivided structure, while 30 councils would change to a single-member ward structure and four councils would change to a multimember ward structure with an equal number of members per ward.

Strathbogie Shire Council will continue to

be represented by seven councillors, after the review also considered a potential change to the shire’s number of councillors.

“I think they’ve made a sound decision based on what we know,” Strathbogie Shire Council interim administrator Peter Stephenson told this masthead.

Shire dissolution “unrealistic”

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE State Government’s recent electoral review will dissolve Strathbogie Shire’s wards, but some residents believe a far more radical change is needed: the dissolution of the Strathbogie Shire itself, with different parts of the shire distributed to neighbouring councils such as City of Greater Shepparton and Benalla Rural City.

The case has been argued in recent letters to the editor published in this masthead from Alan McLean and Tom Maher, and has also been raised in conversation with this masthead by several other residents,

including former councillor Robin Weatherald.

However, Strathbogie Shire Council interim administrator Peter Stephenson has told The Euroa Gazette he considers the prospect of this change to be “very, very remote” and that it would not be beneficial.

Asked if it is a realistic possibility, he said: “I would say that is a very, very remote possibility, to the extent that I’d say a flat no”.

“If you try tear away or remove one council, or you put bits of it with different shires, who benefits out of that?” he asked.

“Who gets the good bits,

“It’s just a nightmare.”

He said instances of other councils considering similar changes have illustrated “why these things are fraught” and “just not really something you want to consider”.

As an example, he cited the case of Sunbury’s attempt to split from Hume City Council.

The State Government had approved the split in 2014, but backflipped in 2015 after an independent auditors’ report concluded

“the separation of Sunbury from the municipality of Hume at this time is so problematic that it should not proceed”.

The report stated that according to the advice of three financial consultants, the split would result in a significant, long-term financial strain for Sunbury residents.

Mr Stephenson said while it is not a perfect analogy, the “Sunbury out of Hume” auditors’ report discusses the issues at stake in calls for the Strathbogie Shire’s areas to be distributed to other councils.

“One of the concerns that I observed through my time [last year as council’s second municipal] monitor is that the council has struggled to work together, and there were some who were just focused on their patch.

“When you’ve got an unsubdivided council, it’s all everybody’s patch, and if they hope to represent the community properly, then they’ve got to work together.”

Greg Carlson, who lives on a farm near Longwood and served as a Strathbogie Shire councillor in the late 90s and early 2000s, agreed with this assessment.

“It’s the most appropriate thing to do, given that wards have resulted in council being dysfunctional,” he said.

“They [the recently suspended councillors] lost perspective of shire-wide strategic issues, particularly economic development and things like that, and it ended up becoming a sort of a factional war or something.

“They couldn’t create a unified vision of where they wanted to take the show.”

In April 2023, before Mr Stephenson’s time, council had rejected the idea of an unsubdivided structure and argued in favour of a singlemember ward structure with seven wards, stating in its submission to the review that a seven-ward model “ensures that the elected council is comprised of representatives from across the shire, not from the main townships, as is the real threat of an unsubdivided council”.

Three other submissions to the review, from Euroa resident Kate Auty and former councillors Sally Hayes-Burke and Chris Raeburn, supported an unsubdivided ward structure with seven councillors.

Ms Hayes-Burke and Mr Raeburn argued this model “would encourage a shire-wide approach in decision-making”, which they said is required under the Local Government Act 2020.

A final report, which was produced following these submissions and released last week, concluded an unsubdivided

GRAPHIC: Victorian Electoral Commission ward structure “best supported the expressed desire to foster a whole of shire approach in council” and is “the best model for promoting fair and equitable representation for voters”.

The potential drawback, though, flagged by Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland, is the possibility certain areas will be overlooked if they are not represented by local councillors.

“It will result in less representation from the Strathbogie Shire’s smaller towns as Longwood, Violet Town, and Strathbogie,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The ward system allowed for relatively even representation across the shire and prevented larger towns from dominating proceedings.”

Her comments were echoed by Euroa Caravan Park owner and former councillor Kristy Hourigan, who is also a former political rival to Ms Cleeland, having campaigned to represent Euroa as a Nationals candidate in 2022.

“Just say you’ve got five councillors from Euroa, you can’t

tell me that… they’re going to be impartial,” Ms Hourigan said.

She said it could also increase the cost of campaigning, with candidates forced to promote themselves across a larger area.

“If you’re a resident of Violet Town, it’s going to be very hard to get your name out in Nagambie, or if you’re a resident of say, Graytown, it’s going to be really hard for you to get your name into Euroa,” she said.

“What it means is that it’s going to need to turn political.

“Knowing that Euroa and Nagambie are very Nationalsdominated political areas, it would mean that you would want to be running as a Nationals councillor candidate – so, I think the shire will turn political now.”

Ms Cleeland expressed the same concern, saying: “Prospective councillors will now need the financial resources to appeal to the entire shire, rather than just their ward and local community, making it far easier for wealthier, politically backed candidates to be elected.”

Mr Stephenson admitted less populated areas could be overlooked if local councillors are not elected, but said he thinks this problem could be reduced due to proportional representation, a voting system used in council elections which is said to allow room for minority-supported candidates to hold power along with more popular candidates.

“It’s proportional representation that we see in the upper house in Victoria, that enables those with smaller numbers to get elected – that’s how the Shooters and Fishers get elected, that’s how Jacqui Lambie gets elected,” he said.

One thing most agree on, though, is that no option is perfect.

“You can have too little representation and you can have too much – there’s positives and negatives,” Mr Carlson said.

Mr Stephenson expressed a similar view, saying: “There are downfalls and advantages for each of the models, but at the end of the day, we have what we have, and it probably will serve the shire well”.

Euroa Health members to vote on partial takeover tomorrow EUROA Health members will tomorrow vote on a proposal that could see the operation of Euroa Health’s acute, urgent and imaging hospital services taken over by a government-funded health service, Goulburn Valley Health.

Established in 1927, Euroa Health is one of Victoria’s few remaining community-owned bush nursing hospitals.

As previously reported by this masthead, most Euroa Health members appear to have a positive view of the proposed partial takeover, which was recently endorsed by the boards of Euroa Health and GV Health.

“Based on the discussion at [an information session last week] and the general feedback we’ve been getting, it’s fair to say that members see the proposal as good for the community in terms of keeping hospital services local,” Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour said.

For the proposal to be adopted, 51 per cent of eligible Euroa Health members must vote in favour of it at a specially convened meeting on February 22.

If the proposal is endorsed by members, it would still require State Government approval.

There were 209 members in July 2023, but Ms Seymour declined to provide an updated membership figure.

The development cames after Euroa Health chair Linsey Siede and past CEO Cherree Hunter campaigned in 2022 for the hospital to receive government funding, supported by Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland and her predecessor Steph Ryan, as declining revenues threatened the hospital’s viability.

Ms Cleeland has welcomed the development, while Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has said she is “excited” by the prospect.

The State Government has been in discussions with Euroa Health and GV Health throughout the process leading up to the proposed partial takeover.

Women in War mural launched Some 350 people S l attended d d the h grand d unveiling ili on FFriday id ON Friday last week, 350 people gathered outside the Violet Town RSL to be part of the unveiling of their new mural with the help of local politicians Annabelle Cleeland and Dr Helen Haines.

Not only the mural and its associated sign were unveiled, but also an honour board listing women from the Violet Town area who had served, both military and civilian.

The women of the Violet Town RSL ran the event with club secretary Joan Brown acting as MC and all the speeches

were given by women, including three Violet Town RSL members.

Jenni Kennedy talked about the project, and Kirsty Harris gave a brief history of women who had served or supported Australia’s war efforts.

Ann Martin spoke about the nurses who had died on Bangka Island in World War II. Indigenous Elder Aunty Lorraine, an Australian Army warrant officer, gave the acknowledgement of country.

Officer Kim Felmingham, gave a heartfelt talk about her experiences as a woman in defence and on operations.

Dr Haines, together with RSL Victoria president Dr Robert Webster and Jenni Kennedy unveiled the new mural sign, followed by Ms Cleeland, Dr Webster and Ms Kennedy revealing the honour board.

The ceremony concluded with a delightful performance by the Peranbin Primary College students, accompanied

by Kate McLurcan singing “We are Australian”, followed

by morning tea.

Ms Cleeland later praised the event and mural in a Facebook post.

“Learning about rarely taught parts of our war history like the Bangka Massacre was incredibly moving and emotional - showing the courage of compassion of women during the most brutal times of war,” she wrote.

“I highly recommend everyone to visit the stunning mural and thank the Violet Town RSL and artists Tim and Sam Bowtell for their incredible work.”

Strathbogie Shire Council’s annual Pitch my Project initiative is now open for ideas to include in the 2024/25 Budget.

Pitch ideas must be Council-led and delivered with no direct allocation of funds given to community groups, clubs, organisations or commercial business.

Each of the six Strategic Focus Areas within the Council Plan will be allocated $50,000. This year we’ve also include the opportunity to pitch infrastructure projects.

MEMBER for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has raised the need for further flood recovery payments in parliament, directing a question towards the Minister for Emergency Services during a recent sitting week.

Ms Cleeland said that local residents and farmers had not received appropriate amounts of support following the October 2022 floods, and recent floods in December and January had only made the matter worse.

“Initial grants were completely inadequate at covering the impact of the October 2022 floods, and now our local residents and farmers are having to deal with the same issue all over again this year,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Understandably, our farmers are frustrated having rebuilt fences only for them to be flattened again less than 16 months later.

“Too many of my constituents have been left with minimal support as they are stuck cleaning up yet another flood.”

Ms Cleeland also addressed insurance challenges that residents in impacted towns like Seymour, Benalla, and Heathcote were dealing with.

“On top of the grants not being enough, and no longer being available, our residents and farmers are finding it impossible to get insurance – leaving them considerably out-of-pocket,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Our regional producers and residents cannot be left to tread water as the persistent threat of floods remain – more financial support is essential to get them back on their feet.”

Ms Cleeland said she also met with the Agriculture Minister, raising the concerns of local farmers and regional residents who have continued to struggle with a lack of funding and support following recent flood events.

“The financial burden of these floods continues to have a profound impact on the mental health of our residents and farmers,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I will continue to advocate for our affected community members and ensure they get the support they deserve to rebuild and thrive.”

Terri MacDonald the latest artist to feature in ARTBOX STATIONED in Nagambie, ARTBOX is now hosting regional Victorian artist Terri MacDonald and her exhibition “A Brush with Nature” until 27 February.

The exhibition celebrates the natural world, focusing on Australian birdlife and botanical subjects with a collection of original watercolour and hand tinted etchings.

Since moving to her country property in central Victoria nearly a decade ago, Terri has been inspired by the abundance of wildlife in her semi “off the grid” lifestyle.

Connecting with the rural landscape and the natural environment, Terri is seeking to show its character and beauty through the depiction of her subjects – be it noisy and colourful parrots and other birdlife, or the plants and insects that are foundational components of the rural environment.

Her work draws from both traditional zoological and botanical illustration through to more expressive styles.

Consistent in her approach though, is an eye for detail and appreciation of colour as a compositional element.

Her influences are broad, drawing inspiration from natural history artists of the 17th to the 19th centuries, including Ferdinand Bauer, and Marianne North and Elizabeth Gould’s, to fine art masters such as Durer, Turner, Cassat and Freud.

She also has worked on Kelmscott vellum, an old and traditional illustration

While difficult to source, Kelmscott vellum is unique in its properties, allowing for incredibly fine detail while also providing an intensity in the watercolour pigments not possible with other painting supports.

Terri has also experimented with printing, with a preference for lithography and copper plate etching.

She has several print works in the exhibition,

both hand tinted and as original prints.

Trained in fine art and as an illustrator, Terri has a PhD in creative arts, with a focus on natural history, and has taught fine art and illustration at university level.

Her work is held in both private and institutional collections, and she has won numerous awards for her work. Terri is involved with the local arts community and is a strong advocate for promoting regional art and artists.

Euroa’s Mary Dewis named a Country Week Legend Ms Dewis has attended Countryy Week for over 30 yyears

By DARREN CHAITMAN A STRONG Country Week for Euroa tennis teams kicked off with Euroa’s Mary Dewis being named a Country Week Legend.

Ms Dewis was one of four Victorians to be named a legend by Tennis Victoria CEO Tamatha Harding ahead of the tournament earlier this month.

“I think it’s an honour… in recognition of years and years of attendance and organising teams and all that stuff,” Ms Dewis said.

The Euroa Purple player said after more than 30 years, she keeps returning to Country Week because she loves tennis and loves catching up with the people she plays with.

Speaking to The Euroa Gazette from Albury last week, where the tournament was held, Ms Dewis said she had been walking down the street that morning when she heard someone yell out, “Hello Mary”.

“And it was people from Mount Prospect, near Ballarat,” she said.

“Over the years, you run into them and play against

A description of Ms Dewis provided by Tennis Victoria states she “epitomises Country Week – community, team spirit, helping out and fun”.

“Mary is a team player

who joyfully organises the team each year,” the statement continues.

“Her involvement in tennis doesn’t stop at Country Week, she’s also a committed contributor to the Euroa tournament for over 20 years.”

AM I the only one that thinks $183,755 for a feasibility study is a bit rich?

I think we need to know what caused the damage in the first place, eg leaves in spouts, and how much it would cost to repair and prevent.

I’m sure a staged approach to repair and/ or replace our offices is needed.

And I think $183,755 would go a fair way to make this happen.

Don’t we have engineers and planners working for the shire?

We have local architects, builders engineers and tradespeople who would quote supply concepts.

I hope the Gazette gets a copy of the “report” so we can have some transparency.

Correspondents have it wrong on Australia Day I URGE Brendan Paterson (Letters, 7/2) to imagine if the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea came and spoke to our members of parliament, and thanked those members of colonial oppression for giving his country democracy, schooling, a common language (English) and a Christian faith, which he has already done.

Imagine what it would be like if all Australians thought as he did and acknowledged not only the bad, but the benefits which this wonderful country has brought us all.

Kirsty Harris to talk women’s war history in Violet Town Dr H D Harris i iis one off A Australia’s li ’ lleading di women-in-war i hi historians i AS one of the International Women’s Day events in North East Victoria, one of Australia’s leading women-in-war historians, Dr Kirsty Harris, will speak on the history behind Violet Town’s new impressive “Women in War” mural.

Her presentation will occur from 11am on Saturday, March 2 at the Community Complex in Cowslip St, Violet Town.

Morning tea will be served from 11am followed by the talk and a tour of the mural.

Erected by the Violet Town RSL Sub Branch, the mostly black and white mural represents women who served in or supported Australia’s defence forces in time of war.

“The old refrain that women replaced men so that they could fight is long gone with female members of the military now commanding units and ships and flying planes,” Dr Harris said.

“They even can be found in infantry battalions.

“But it is important that we understand the work their forebears did, and the role they played in creating a permanent place for women in Australia’s military.

“We also have an opportunity to reflect on how those pioneer women working on the home front, particularly in World War II, paved the way for women in the wider Australian workforce”.

The mural, painted by mural and silo artist Tim Bowtell and his son Sam, tells the story of local women connected to the Violet Town area who served, but set in a wider context.

Dr Harris also writes The Euroa Gazette’s “Violet Town tidings” column.

NHVR launches operation to boost heavy vehicle safety

THE National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is set to launch an on-road targeted operation, focused on mechanical safety and compliance with mass, dimension and loading requirements of heavy vehicles operating in support of the construction sector.

The operation will commence this month and run for four weeks across NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, ACT, and TAS. “Throughout the operation, we will prioritise education in the first instance to ensure operators and drivers have a clear understanding of the risks associated with non-compliance during heavy vehicle transport activities in the construction industry, and know how to manage them,” NHVR chief operations officer Paul Salvati said.

“Drivers and operators should always be practicing safe behaviours, such as implementing a daily check list to ensure the mechanical safety of vehicles, or utilising measuring devices, such as tape measures or height sticks, to confirm the vehicle and its load are within allowable dimensions.

“Managing safety risks can help prevent injuries

By DARREN CHAITMAN EUROA could have its own bike education track as early as June, after Strathbogie Shire Council resolved at its December 2023 meeting to award a tender for the construction of a new play space and installation of a bike education track at Euroa’s Bicentennial Park.

Shepparton company Kialla Lawn and Garden will be paid $239,019 to construct the new play space and bike track by June 30, according to the meeting’s agenda report.

The idea for a bike education track in Euroa came about through a community member’s Pitch My Project submission earlier in 2023, council’s acting director of community and planning Rachael Frampton said during the meeting.

Interim administrator Peter Stephenson, who carried the council motion, called the plan “terrific”.

“I look forward to seeing or, even if by distance, hearing about the construction being complete,” he said.

Even kindergarteners will vote on their preferred equipment, with the report stating: “Officers will also attend local schools, kindergartens and play groups to ensure the main users of the play equipment get a say”.

According to the report, a September 2023 audit of the

shire’s playgrounds and open spaces identified Bicentennial Park on Garrett Street, Euroa, as requiring an update.

“The play space proposed for replacement requires immediate works to ensure safety and compliance and its replacement will also be consistent with best practice play provision,” the report states.

Council did not describe these safety and compliance issues when requested to do so by this masthead.

A council spokesperson told The Euroa Gazette there is no other free-to-access bike education track near the Strathbogie Shire.

“Children aged roughly between four and 10 years can ride their bikes while learning important road safety principles along the way,” the spokesperson said.

“Bicentennial Park also has the unused space and presents as an ideal location for a play space of this nature.”

and fatalities, avoid financial loss for the business, evade legal sanctions, enhance business reputation, and create a culture where informed safety decisions are made.”

Reflecting on last year’s construction focused national operation, Mr Salvati provided insights into the compliance outcomes.

“In the last operation, from March 1 to April 15, 2023, the NHVR’s on-road officers inspected more than 1200 vehicles, and we saw encouraging signs of compliance,” Mr Salvati said.

“Overall, 56.4 per cent of heavy construction vehicles were compliant across all HVNL categories, with especially high compliance across mass and loading.

“The results however, in the mechanical compliance category were indicative of the work we still have to do.

“Of the defective components identified, the most serious were in brakes, body and chassis, while others were found in lights and reflectors.”

Mr Salvati said the regulator is urging all operators and drivers working in the construction industry to keep safety front of mind.

By DESIGNEUROA & EUROACONNECT DESIGNEUROA and EuroaConnect are working together to petition ARTC to purchase the Railway Street workshop, currently known as Franz Kloft Mechanical Repairs.

The retirement of Franz, and his desire to sell the site, opens up unique opportunity for this prime location to become BinneyLink, a pedestrian underpass, linking both sides of town via the new Railway Station precinct.

Edwina Thomson, local architect and chair of DESIGNEuroa, said the site presents a fabulous design solution.

“These opportunities don’t come along everyday,” she said.

“When you look down Binney Street, your eye is automatically drawn to Klofty’s building – if we can transform this space into a people-friendly, accessible public space we will succeed in linking both the station and the other side of town to Binney Street.

“That could really revitalise Euroa.”

Ms Thomson (DESIGNEu-

roa) and Shirley Saywell (EuroaConnect) said they are petitioning ARTC to adopt the BinneyLink idea.

“ARTC must demonstrate that they are serious about leaving a positive legacy in rural communities,” Ms Saywell said.

“Imagine being able to easily access the train station or simply get across town through a big, open, boulevard style walkway.

“What a lovely change that would be from the current dark, dingy trenches.”

The ARTC’s current plans do not include the incorporation of Klofty’s shed, but the community view strongly supports this highly visible site being incorporated into a state-of-the-art rail precinct plan.

The following comments have been left by locals who have already signed the petition.

“We need an inviting entrance to the town.”

“Euroa could celebrate its main street by crowning it with a beautiful public space where pedestrians can easily access shops, shade, public transport and both sides of town.”

Aged care facility and schools delighted by Melbourne Dees visit LOCALS old and young – at GraniteHill Aged Care, Euroa Primary School, St John’s Primary School, Avenel Primary School and Peranbin Primary College Violet Town – were delighted to be visited by Melbourne Football Club on Tuesday last week.

The visit was part of AFL’s 2024 Community Camp program, which has seen teams heading to regional communities across Australia throughout the pre-season.

Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour, a Demons supporter, was among the first and most excited people to welcome the football club to town as she greeted players outside GraniteHill.

“It’s not every day your team comes to work, so I’m pretty excited,” she said.

“Today’s looking fantastic, mostly for the residents in GraniteHill, because having this sort of activity and support by these wonderful athletes is terrific for our social and wellbeing support in our aged care.”

She was particularly excited

by Angus Brayshaw’s presence at the facility.

Inside GraniteHill, Melbourne team members joined residents in their daily stretches before conducting a Q&A session.

During the stretches, key forward Ben Brown hit it off with GraniteHill resident Peter Gleeson, with both men enjoying a lengthy chat.

“Really loved speaking to Peter,” Mr Brown later confirmed.

“He’s a fellow Tasmanian, so had a bit of a chat about Tassie and where Pete grew up in Cygnet.

“Also a big Jamie Elliott fan, so we had a bit of a chat about Collingwood and Jamie Elliott.

“I was talking to him about how my uncle used to play at Collingwood... and just general life stuff.”

Jamie Elliot’s name came up again in the Q&A session, after a resident asked the team if they had ever played against the Euroa-born

Collingwood star.

“Unfortunately we have,” forward Alex Neal-Bullen responded.

“He’s a very good player.”

Mr Neal-Bullen also asked the residents of GraniteHill a question, seeking their advice for life after football.

The responses of residents included, “whatever you do, enjoy it” and “make the rest of your life about your family”.

At Euroa Primary School, Melbourne players conducted a Q&A, told jokes, signed autographs and gave out prizes.

Midfielder Lachie Hunter reportedly played “non-stop” with Lenny, the school’s therapy dog, according to the principal Kim Flack.

“The players from the Melbourne FC… were friendly, funny and very interactive with the students,” Ms Flack said.

“We hope you enjoyed yourselves at our school, you may have converted a few more supporters to the Dees.”

St John’s Primary School acting principal Libby Hamilton said the players at her school cooked pancakes, served pancakes, signed autographs, had a torpedo kicking competition, played games and held a Q&A session.

Avenel Primary School principal Ross Davis said the players held a Q&A session and a game of “paper, scissors, rock” with the students.

Edie Fuhrman celebrates 100th

By DIANE GRANT IN the autumn of one’s life many folk have to decide where they will be in the winter of their life: in their own home, live with relatives or in aged care facilities.

100-year-old Edie Fuhrmann made the decision with her family’s guidance to move into the Nagambie Healthcare’s Lakeview Lodge Hostel after her husband Bob Fuhrmann passed away in 2015.

The hostel gave her a special birthday treat with little birthday cup cakes shared at the lunch at the hostel at which local MP Annabelle Cleeland visited with her a happy 100th birthday greeting.

On Saturday, February 17, on Edie’s actual 100th birthday, over 100 guests derived from her large family and friends helped her celebrate this milestone at the Tahbilk Estate Restaurant at a celebratory lunch.

Edie and husband Bob Fuhrmann were blessed with 10 children and had been married for 71 years.

They received a certificate from the Pope for their 70th anniversary in 2003.

Sadly Bob passed away in 2015.

The couple’s 10 offspring have presented them with 30 grandchildren and later came the great and great great

Edith Mary Elizabeth Comi was born to Fausto and Marina (nee Santwell) on February 17, 1924, who had arrived in Australia on Boxing Day 1922 with one son Paul, on the Re D’Italia.

The family grew again when Ron (Romeo) came along.

After five years living at Bailieston the family moved to Nagambie opposite St Malachy’s Catholic Church and presbytery and St Joseph’s Catholic school next door.

For a short while after leaving school Edie worked at a doctor’s in Carlton but moved back to Nagambie and worked at the Royal Mail Hotel where she met a young man named Robert “Bob” Fuhrmann who was stationed at the army camp at Puckapunyal.

They were married at St Malachy’s Church on January 30, 1943 and Bob was deployed to New Guinea to serve in Australia’s World War II’s forces there.

The couple was blessed with 10 children, all born in the Nagambie Hospital on the site Edie lives at now.

Sadly Julian passed away in 2010.

Which house would win the annual Euroa Secondary College Swimming Carnival – Furlonge (in yellow), Crieghton (in green) or Kirkland (in red)?

After the house parade it was into the water; freestyle, back-stroke, breast-stroke, relays and the much anticipated novelty races for those who like a challenge, but not necessarily a win.

The fun races included the all-in points race, the raft race and the floaty race.

The entire school was involved with the student leaders on the SRC putting on a fundraising barbecue.

The results for each age group were 13-year-old girl Lara Saxon, boy Darby Hoare, 14-year-old girl Beryl Farrell, boy Patrick Holden, 15-year-old girl Macey Watson, boy Sam Mills, 16-year-old girl Oakley Paul, boy Angus Rowe, 17-year-old girl Ally Davidson, boy Tyler Kipping, 20-year-old Rachael Buerckner, boy Will Creevey.

The overall winners were Lara Saxon and Rachael Buerckner.

A big congratulations to all the students and staff for making this a great day.

Council calls for improved power and telecommunications infrastructure STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is continuing to call for improved power and telecommunications infrastructure after a storm on Tuesday last week resulted in power outages across Victoria, including in the Strathbogie Shire.

In a statement provided to this masthead, a Strathbogie Shire Council spokesperson said the storm resulted in reduced telecommunications in parts of the shire.

“Council continues to advocate to the State and Federal Governments to improve power and telecommunications reliability,” the spokesperson said.

“The struggle for reliable phone coverage in Strathbogie Shire’s municipality is also unacceptable.

“We believe reliable power and telecommunications infrastructure is just as important as road, waste and utility services and the lack of this infrastructure and service providers makes rural districts uncompetitive in attracting commercial and residential investment, and

at a disadvantage.

“The lack of reliable infrastructure is becoming increasingly dangerous during times of severe weather and natural disaster as people cannot access important emergency warnings, other crucial information and potentially puts people’s safety and lives at risk.

“We need to ensure Strathbogie Shire residents, businesses and visitors receive the same level of connectivity capacity and service reliability as those in metropolitan Melbourne and our larger regional centres.”

The spokesperson said council’s offices did not sustain any significant damage in the storms after Tuesday’s storm, which was was less severe and had less rainfall than the storm events experienced in late 2023 and early 2024.

Council offered residents the option to drop their storm-related green waste to its transfer stations free-of-charge from Thursday 15 February to Sunday 18 February to assist any residents that were heavily impacted by the storm.

Ambulance bargaining fight to keep paramedics moving

By RYAN MALCOLM AMBULANCE union activities are not expected to impact patients within the Strathbogie Shire, as negotiations continue over a new enterprise agreement for paramedics across the state.

The Victorian Ambulance Union (VAU) has been negotiating with Ambulance Victoria (AV) over the last 12 months, seeking improvements to the ambulance workplace to keep experienced staff in the job, amid news more than half of AV’s paramedic workforce has been employed less than five years.

A recent survey conducted by Swinburne and RMIT reportedly found 57 per cent of paramedics were considering leaving the

profession, a near 100 per cent increase on 2020’s figure (29pc), while 20 per cent intended to seek new employment opportunities over the coming 12 months.

As part of protected industrial action, campaign messages will be written on ambulance vehicles, paramedics will refuse to take billing details, and ambulances which are ramped at hospitals for greater than 40 minutes will activate their beacons.

VAU secretary, Danny Hill, said actions were aimed at stepping beyond the rules AV impose on members speaking to the media.

“The results of the survey show that despite the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC)

review and all the promises about becoming a better employer, nothing has improved for our members,” he said.

“One in five paramedics are planning to leave within a year and many more are thinking about leaving.

“The survey also shows that trust in senior management has completely plummeted to its lowest levels ever – if only five per cent of your workforce trusted you to make the right decision, it’s probably time to rethink your position.

“This EBA is about making the job more survivable by having better work-life balance, reasonable workload, getting home to family, and hopefully being able to retain the experienced workforce.

“Ambos are dedicated to saving lives, but they deserve to have a life too.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the action would not impact service delivery.

“We value our staff – paramedics, operational and administrative – for the commitment and dedication they show every day,” the spokesperson said.

“We continue to focus on developing and supporting our people and providing world class, high quality care to the Victorian community.

“Ambulance Victoria continues to negotiate with employee representatives in good faith and we hope to reach a fair, reasonable and mutually beneficial agreement soon.”

The Bible doesn’t say believers should do everything for themselves; nor that God will do everything for them. Rather, the Bible shows that God will do His part and we must do ours. “Without God we cannot.

Without us, God will not”. (Augustine). His power and resources are available but our part is to appropriate them. “For God is working in you, giving you the desires and the power to do what pleases Him”. (Phill 2:13). Apostle Paul wrote, ‘For I can do everything through Christ, who strengthens me; His Word is alive and active in me”. (Phill 4:13) God endows His grace and strength to those He calls; and they walk in His visions and plans. (Jer.29:11) God leads but only we can follow. God supernaturally enables us through His Holy Spirit but only we can yield our will to His. God convicts us of sin but we have to repent. (Rom.10:9-10) All His blessings, were provided by Jesus death on the Cross but we have to believe and receive His promises; since we only have what we accept.

People question why God doesn’t do certain things when bad things occur. God decided at Creation, that mankind must first have freedom and free will, although it’s brought evil into the world. God created only Good. Even Satan was a beautiful, created angel, Lucifer, who rebelled (Isiah 14:12-15) and still works his deceptions today. First man Adam then mis-used free choice, as Eve in disobeying God in the Garden.

God doesn’t prevent anyone rejecting His Truth even though He desires that all would come to Him; (John 3:16) otherwise we’d be robots and our love wouldn’t be freely given to God. Believers bow hearts, mind and freewill to the Lord but gain far more in life. (Phil. 1:21) God draws near to us but most ignore His whispers. Those who stop still, listen, respond and seek God, will find Him. (Jer.29:13). In ‘choosing life instead of death’ (Deut.30:19-20), we experience deep reverential awe for our Lord God Almighty.

The Word works in believers to provide desire and power to do what pleases God. (Phil 2:13) “For apart from Christ, we can do nothing. (of eternal worth) (John 15:5) Until we accept Christ, we’re alone in our limited human strength and we fail_ or succeed, only to discover dissatisfaction at the lonely top. (Eccles. 1:14) We can try to break free from addictions or put marriages back together on our own and alone or we can trust Gods’ supernatural perspective and help.

We must take hold of God-given resources, which help us resist temptation, be bolder or be better husbands, wives or parents, for “every man has gone his own way’. (Isiah 53:6). Frank Sinatras’ famous song “I Did It My Way’, epitomises the wrong message; because human pride and rejecting Gods way for our own, comes before a fall. Which way are you moving, toward Gods’ saving Grace or away from His beautiful Face?

Former Strathbogie Shire monitor Janet Dore appointed to Brimbank City Council

By DARREN CHAITMAN YET another Victorian council has been slapped with municipal monitors as the State Government last week announced Janet Dore – Strathbogie Shire Council’s municipal monitor in 2021 and 2022 – would be one of two monitors appointed to Brimbank City Council in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

A State Government media release refers to issues at Brimbank City Council including the relationships between councillors and council staff (previously an issue at Strathbogie Shire

Council) and confidentiality requirements.

Ms Dore has also been a municipal monitor at Wodonga and Ararat councils.

She and another monitor, Penelope Holloway, will keep an eye on Brimbank City Council until December 31.

Chris Raeburn, who was mayor at the time of Ms Dore’s appointment to Strathbogie Shire Council, has previously spoken highly of Ms Dore and said he worked well with her.

However, Mr Raeburn later said he felt the “wheels fell off ” at council again after Ms Dore’s departure.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Anthrax detected at two properties in Shepparton region ANTHRAX has been detected at two beef cattle properties in the Shepparton region in recent weeks.

One cow has died, while the remaining livestock were last week being vaccinated.

A total of ten beef cattle have died across the two properties.

Agriculture Victoria veterinarians and animal health

staff are working closely with livestock owners in the region to assist with surveillance and vaccinations if necessary.

Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Graeme Cooke said the second detection was not unexpected in northern Victoria, particularly during summer, assisted by the long survival of the anthrax bacteria in soil.

‘Local farmers, veterinarians and Agriculture Victoria are well prepared to handle these incidents, with quarantine and biosecurity arrangements in place and vaccinations underway for potentially exposed livestock,’ Dr Cooke said.

Anthrax is not a concern for the public: • Anthrax does not spread rapidly and is not contagious

for humans • There is no general public health risk associated with anthrax • Any risk is confined to people who handle dead livestock such as farmers, veterinarians and knackery workers • The Department of Health undertakes risk exposure assessments of individuals who have potentially been exposed

and may offer treatment depending on the risk assessment.

• There is no impact on local produce or food safety.

Farmers are urged to report any cases of unexplained deaths to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888, to your local vet, or to Agriculture Victoria animal health staff on 136 186.

Anthrax has occurred intermittently in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in recent decades.

In Victoria this is often in northern areas of the state, but historically it has been recorded across all of the state in farming areas.

Young leaders take charge of cattle show Tegan g Kubeil,, Emilyy Peck and Carlie Mackelmann step p up p to organise g agricultural g event

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE Euroa Agricultural Society is seeing the next generation step into leadership roles, with three young women – Tegan Kubeil, Emily Peck and Carlie Mackelmann – organising this year’s Euroa Autumn Beef Cattle Show.

Ms Kubeil, a 19-yearold from Euroa, is the main organiser, with assistance from Ms Peck and Ms Mackelmann, who are from Invergordon, with family connections to Euroa.

Ms Kubeil said she stepped into the role about three weeks before the 2023 Euroa Show, after the lady who previously organised the Euroa Show’s cattle section and the Autumn cattle show “left them quite high and dry”.

“I was a part of a small committee with the marketing team, so I put my hand up and said, ‘yep, I’ll give it a go’,” she said.

She said organising the cattle show has involved contacting sponsors, talking to entrants, and getting

entries, trade spaces, and ribbons.

“It’s been a fair bit of work,” she admitted.

Asked if she had advice for other young people considering getting involved in agricultural shows, Ms Kubeil said: “Just give it a crack.”

“You don’t have to know what you’re doing – I had no background in cattle whatsoever other than knowledge from family,” she said.

“But I’ve jumped in, I’ve given it a crack and here we are, we’re running it.”

The Euroa Autumn Beef Cattle Show will be on March 2 and 3 at the Euroa Showgrounds.

THANK YOU NOTE: On Australia Day I met the former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett at our Australia Day celebrations.

I wanted to share some of Nagambie’s history with him.

So, I gave him the short history of Nagambie and newsworthy items our town had experienced over the past year so he could have a feel about our community.

I received a nice letter of thanks for the folder of news and he advised John and I to not slow down too much, or else you stop.

POWER OUTAGE TROUBLE: Like many Victorians, Nagambie folk suffered a power blackout last week.

The one for our Kelvin Grove Village lasted for 20 hours.

It started here before a short thunderstorm.

We can’t have solar power here in our village and most of us are pensioners like many in our town and we can’t afford a backup generator.

We could manage with air con, lights, TV, the computer, the phone or a shower.

And thank God we could manage some sleep due to a cool change.

But what I could not manage was the worry of having lost three quarters of my Chrisco Freezer hamper in my upright freezer.

I had paid for it over 12 months and most of it was meat.

I usually stretch the food out to September.

Thank heavens I kept the doors shut on the upright freezer and fridge nearly all that 20 hours.

I feel for those who suffered the loss of food in their home or business.

I lost a full freezer a few years ago in similar circumstances when we were away on holidays.

I’d like to know who is responsible for these outages and for the losses and the trouble they caused and why it affected so many households, farms and businesses.

We don’t need apologies or excuses from the government or power companies, we need action to fix these major maintenance problems and some form of compensation.

NAGAMBIE ON WATER FESTIVAL: This Saturday, February 24, free entry to the Go NOW Nagambie on Water Festival from 10am.

Ruth and Don Pollock both decided to try their hands at writing a book, but rather than write one together they approached the task separately.

Ruth published two books in 2023.

Her first book Clouds and Sunshine was published early in the year.

The book centres around Rosie Franklin, an enthusiastic teacher and sports coach who, through her desire for adventure, cements a friendship into a loving relationship with Chas Anderson.

Chas, a local, daredevil stunt pilot, is also a well-known cropduster.

Together they weave their dreams for the future, unaware of the betrayal by friends and associates to undermine their aspirations.

In 1965, returning from Vietnam to Australia was quite diso-

rienting for many veterans.

Few Australians knew anything about Vietnam including where it was and why there was a war.

Fifty years later, the survivors of the first RAAF unit in Vietnam (RAAF Transport Flight Vietnam-RTFV) collaborated to produce an anthology of personal stories: the result is Suggy’s Men. Don Pollock became the compiler, assisted by Des Lovett, Kev Henderson and many others.

The very personal experiences shared in the book include Don’s experience of returning home to find his mother didn’t recognise him.

Conspiracy theory beliefs don’t change much over time: researchers

The AAI committee has expressed a longstanding desire for an online presence and received a 2023/24 Community Strengthening grant from Strathbogie Shire Council to assist.

Once the online content is finalised, the committee plans to engage a website designer to bring the website to fruition.

AAI secretary Helen Gwilliam said that the group has already chosen a domain name and has started contacting local organisations and businesses about the project.

Ms Gwilliam noted Avenel Active previously published the ‘Avenel Welcomes Newcomers’ booklet to provide residents with community information, and this project will help the group to move online and reach more people.

“Our plan is to make the website a go-to source for information about Avenel, its local organisations, associations, and all our sporting clubs, as well as

“Additionally, we aim to provide a platform for local businesses to showcase details of their services and contacts.

Strathbogie Shire Council Administrator Peter Stephenson said it was fantastic to see groups like Avenel Active Inc benefit from council’s grant program.

DESPITE contemporary concerns about the prevalence of misinformation, a new study has found no evidence that belief in conspiracy theories increased on average over time.

From 9/11 to COVID, researchers including La Trobe University’s Dr Mathew Marques, a senior lecturer in psychology, surveyed just shy of 500 Australians and New Zealanders over the course of six months to determine whether people change their minds frequently or stick tenaciously to their beliefs, regardless of what evidence they come across.

The participants were presented with 12 theories related to claims about events that are ongoing or occurred this millennium including, the September 11 attacks “caused by controlled demolitions arranged by US government insiders”, the rollout of 5G telecommunications technology, chemtrails and the 2020 US Presidential Election.

Dr Marques said most participants tended to disagree with the presented theories, however, there were some consistent believers in the sample and a small proportion whose beliefs fluctuated.

“I think the notable finding

from our study revealed that for every conspiracy theory, there was also a small proportion of converts,” Dr Marques said.

“They disagreed with the theory at the start of the study but agreed with it by the end. There was also a small group of apostates, that is people who agreed with the theory at the start but later changed their mind.

“Overall, however, the percentages of converts and apostates were offset, leaving the proportion of believers fairly stable over time.”

The study’s most popular unwarranted conspiracy theory was that “pharmaceutical companies have suppressed a cure for cancer to protect their profits”, with 18 per cent of the sample group agreeing when first asked.

Only two per cent of the sample agreed that “COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips to monitor and control people”, resulting in the least popular theory.

This was despite the data collection occurring in 2021, during the tumultuous second year of the COVID pandemic, where lockdowns and mandates were still happening in both Australia and New Zealand and antigovernment sentiment was building.

The Weekend team played at home against Dookie and suffered a defeat 57-65, 2-14, a reversal of fortunes from when we played them at Dookie.

The raffle draws at half time are much anticipated.

After this series finishes, we will probably revert to Thursday nights for Barefoot bowls.

TWILIGHT TOURNAMENT It was a very warm start to our tournament.

Sadly, this year we didn’t fill the green and had to put a team of our own in, but the night was still enjoyed by all who participated.

The winners with three wins were Joe Gattuso’s team from Nagambie, and runnersup with two wins, and a draw against their fellow clubmates were Mooroopna’s Debbie Dunkley.

The tables were presented nicely with flowers from Toni’s Garden, and the raffle prizes, a lovely hamper of Toni’s homemade produce, a meat tray from Rettkes and a fruit box from Jackson’s Café and Produce store as well as some donated bottles of wine were well received.

Thank you to everyone from all those who prepared food for the meals, collecting stuff for the kitchen, the volunteers in the kitchen, our new raffle ticket seller and barrel girl Ian, and to Ral behind the bar, for keeping the bar stocked.

From there they just got better consolidating an impressive 26 shot win, 38 -10.

Similarly, Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) won eight straight ends in the first half and continued on with their good form after lunch to record a 32 – 10 win.

Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Grace Kenworthy (s) got off to a good start and led for the first half until Alexandra scored a five on the last end before the break which game them the lead.

In chase mode, Avenel came within one shot of Alexandra, however the visitors were too good and won 25 – 20.

The next game for Avenel is semi-final two against Seymour VRI at Tatura.

Midweek Pennant Division six, round 15.

Avenel 7 – 36 drew with Rushworth 7 – 36.

Avenel needed a win to get the into the finals but fell short by one solitary shot.

Marg Harrison, Nyoli Bell, Marion Gittus, Glen Bell (s) led for the entire game boosted by winning seven ends in a row for a decisive win, 26 - 10.

The scores were reversed for Ron Harrison, Robyn Hyland, Bill O’Connor, Graeme Toy with a 10 – 26 loss.

They just did not have the answers for an accurate Rushworth rink.

Weekend Pennant Division three round 14 Avenel 4 – 102 were defeated by Mooroopna Golf 14 - 103.

Pam Pedder, Donna Rowley, Noel Slater, Jake Wall (s) won the lead on the sixth end and went into the break for lunch three up.

In a sterling second half they eight of the last eleven ends for a very tidy win, 27 – 18.

In a game with many lead changes, Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) found themselves three shots down on the 22nd end.

Scoring eleven shots to zip over the last three ends including six on the last end sealed a gutsy win 35 – 27.

Fay Hateley, James Wall, Grace Kenworthy, Geoff Hateley (s) won only four ends in the first half to be down 12 shots.

They fared a lot better in the second half winning six ends and holding Mooroopna Golf to single shot end wins to haul in the scoreline by six shots.

A win for the visitors 26 – 20.

Howard Geldard, Kate Donovan, Josh McDonald, Brett McDonald (s) won 13 ends for the day however Mooroopna Golf had multiple bowls in their end wins and

deservedly won the game 32 – 20.

Weekend Pennant Division seven round 14.

Mark Morse, Ross Sinclair, Graeme Toy, Glen Bell (s) had a day out winning seventeen of the 21 ends played in a masterful display of bowls to claim victory 26 – 9.

On the other hand, Mooroopna Golf were relentless all game recording a solid win 11 – 32 over the Avenel rink of Kyle Pedder, Ron Harrison, Jenny Furletti, Marion Gittus (s).

No chocolates for Avenel’s Weekend Pennant teams as both teams did not qualify for finals.

However, we wish Seymour, Seymour VRI and Euroa all the very best in their quest for finals glory.

EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By GREG BLATCHFORD THE Home and Away season has come to an end, and we have three sides that have finished in second position on the ladder – Division four in Midweek Pennant and Divisions four and six in Weekend Pennant.

It is a great result for our club, and we wish all sides the best for their finals campaign.

Whilst both these weekend pennant sides lost in the final round, we gained the points required to hold on to second position with Division four finishing four points clear of Dookie and Division six one point ahead of Mooroopna.

A real positive for the club was the social events that were held after the final rounds of the season with a sensational afternoon tea last Tuesday and a pizza night on Saturday.

Jan Sheargold was successful in the Nifty 50 and with only two draws remaining Shane will need to lift his game if he wants to be a winner in this as well.

Club Championship matches are continuing with some excellent bowling and close results.

On Wednesday at 10.30 am the Men’s Pairs final will be held with Tony Kingma and Marc Stevens up against Jim Perry and Max Griffiths in what should be another highquality affair.

on Monday February 12 and proved that an early assembly time of 8.30 am is no barrier, even for our travellers from Deniliquin.

We were indeed fortunate to travel south on this day as the temperature ranged from 26 to 33oC throughout our playing period with scorching temperatures forecast throughout the district.

The course was in excellent condition and president Gail Allen made us feel especially welcome, and she was well supported by the ladies preparing and serving a luncheon of refreshing salad rolls followed by peaches and icecream.

A-grade was decided on countback with Kelly Cheong, Rushworth, successful over John Keller, Hill Top, both with 39 stableford points.

Glen Langlands, Euroa, won B-grade with 41 points with Charlie Walker, Euroa, runner-up on countback with 39 points.

Ron Dixon, Lockington, led C-grade with 40pts, well ahead of Howard Cooper, Deniliquin, on 36pts.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 128 metre eighteenth hole which is protected on the right by a large Red Gum to send any wayward shots into a deep gully.

EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON CHARLIE Watson claimed his first Honour Board event to win the Nolan Trophy by the narrowest one shot margin over Richard Eddy.

The pair started the day with Eddy on top by one, but Charlie was able to reverse that result with a final round of 92 – 22 Net 70, to edge in front of Richard Eddy who shot 79-7 Net 72.

Charlie thought he had squandered his opportunity when he had a triple bogie six on the last, but the rest of his round was good enough to take the win.

Richard Eddy did nothing wrong playing to his handicap

in the final round but will carry some disappointment for a while especially after his 23 point one over par win at Twilight on Friday evening.

Third place went to Sam Mills, whose excellent form over recent weeks has seen his handicap tumble down to 12.

Thirty-nine players found the course to their liking with many getting out early to beat the heat.

Paddy McCarthy took out Division one with one over the card for a Net 70 while Division two went to C Murray with a fine 86-19 Net 63.

Five players shared the two-ball prize purse while Ash Pedder had the putter dialed in with just 24 putts for the day.

Balls down the line went to Cam Roper, Owen Robertson, and Lachie Robertson on 71 with Tony Walters and Lucas Paul on 72.

Friday’s Twilight had 33 players.

Richard Eddy, who is becoming a Twilight specialist had 23.

Laurie McMartin and Glen Langlands 19, Melissa Eddy and Gary Mitchell both had 18.

Windy conditions confronted the 18 men in the Wednesday Stableford round.

Scoring was much more difficult, and 35 points was enough for Donald Bubeck to collect the win.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB

By DAVID LOVE THE Gary Bow foursomes proved tough going once again the alternating shot format not only puts pressure on a golf game but can strain a relationship just like a marriage, traditionally a score somewhere near par is all that’s needed to win the day and that was the case once again.

The winning pair of Shaun Spicer and Ben Cassar produced the best scratch score of the day a modest 88, this being good enough to win with net 73 the pair were somewhat bemused by the win thinking they had not done enough.

The days sponsor Gary Bow and partner Steve Donnison finished runners up by the narrow margin of half a shot, their day was also a grinding 90-16.5-73.5 battling their way into third place was Chris Roberts and Peter Lawrence two golfers with the needed temperament for foursomes 98-24-74 got that done.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Chris Roberts with an absolute belter into the breeze to reach the narrow green on the third and Steve Donnison making great contact to loft an iron into close proximity on the 13th.

Moglonemby misses out on finals

By CAROLINE KEENAN EUROA sides find themselves filling the top three spots on the section one ladder after the final round of the Benalla and District Tennis Summer season.

It means St Paul’s, which had a magnificent season to remain undefeated, will take on the fourth-placed Strathbogie in the first final this week.

St Paul’s had one its closest brushes with defeat on Saturday when the Moglonemby men proved too strong for the reigning premiers’ men.

It was some one-sided results from the St Paul’s women that proved the difference.

The final score was St Paul’s 57 to Moglonemby 47.

The result means Moglonemby hasn’t earned a finals berth.

Longwood Lawn finished

in second place after accounting for Terip Terip in a nailbiter.

Stevie Mildren-Nicel and Brent Moore impressed by winning all their sets.

The final score was Terip Terip 53 to Longwood Lawn 61.

Longwood has booked a showdown with Euroa Lawn in the first week of the finals after Euroa enjoyed a comfortable win over Gooram.

The winner only dropped one set for the day to storm to a 28-game victory.

Kevin Bott and Troy Van Den Berghe produced some eye-catching tennis to stave off quality opposition in Bob Furphy and Josh Higgins.

The final score was 71 to 43.

In section two, the St Paul’s men dominated over Avenel White’s men to run out comfortable winners in all their sets.

Euroa secures resounding win over Northerners in Haisman Shield A GRADE

By JACK WILSON EUROA A grade cricket team showcased their prowess once again as they hosted Northerners at the Friendlies on the second day of Round 12 in the Haisman Shield.

With Northerners resuming their innings at 3/35, Euroa faced a tough challenge initially but turned the tables dramatically as the day progressed.

In the first 10 overs of the day’s play, Northerners displayed some impressive shots, posing a challenge to Euroa.

However, Euroa soon found their rhythm, initiating a middle-order collapse that swung the momentum decisively in their favor.

Vaughan Kirk’s two wickets and Liam Phillips’ threewicket haul played pivotal roles in dismantling Northerners’ batting lineup.

Despite some resistance from Northerners’ tailenders, Euroa remained relentless in their pursuit of victory.

Walter Jackson’s crucial contributions saw Euroa clinch the final two wickets, sealing a resounding win and lifting the A grade team off the bottom of the ladder with one round remaining.

Looking ahead, Euroa prepares for their last game of the season, a two-day fixture against Tatura at Howley Oval in Tatura, commencing next Saturday.

With their recent triumph bolstering their confidence, Euroa aims to finish the season on a high note, carrying forward the momentum from their impressive performance against Northerners.

By JACK WILSON D GRADE cricket team delivered a stellar performance as they hosted ladder leaders Pine Lodge in Round 14.

Despite a challenging start, Euroa showcased their resilience and skill to clinch a convincing win at home.

Captain Connor McCombe faced disappointment as he lost the toss, with Pine Lodge opting to bat first on a green pitch that promised assistance for the bowlers.

Pine Lodge made a promising start, reaching 29 for the first wicket.

However, the tide turned when Grayson Kirk entered the attack, immediately finding the edge of the Pine Lodge opener, brilliantly caught by Luke Gilliland.

Brad Gleeson continued the onslaught, dismissing the other opener in the following over.

In the 15th over, Nick Brodie added to Pine Lodge’s woes with a stunning catch

by Cale Robertson behind the stumps.

This breakthrough triggered a collapse, with Euroa’s bowlers wreaking havoc.

Connor McCombe, Cooper Goodall, and Kirk combined forces with outstanding bowling, while Robertson’s safe hands secured two more catches behind the stumps. Goodall’s sharp fielding led to a runout, and Rod Jones claimed two catches, supported by fantastic catches from Gleeson and Jack Wilson.

Pine Lodge was left bewildered, bowled out for a mere 80 runs.

With 81 runs required for victory, Euroa’s batsmen wasted no time in their pursuit.

Gleeson and Jones set a blistering pace, with Gleeson smashing 21 runs off just

10 balls, including two massive sixes.

Despite Gleeson’s departure, Euroa maintained the momentum, with contributions from Jones, Brodie, Gilliland, and McCombe.

Euroa achieved victory with 17 overs to spare, showcasing their dominance with the bat as well.

Looking forward, Euroa prepares to face Old Students in their last home game of the season.

Buoyed by their recent triumph, Euroa aims to carry forward this momentum and finish the season on a high note.

Euroa Gym hosts successful rowing event for Pediatric Brain Cancer

By DAN GODSMARK THE Euroa Gym played host to the third installment of the Connors Erg Challenge, a remarkable event aimed at raising funds and awareness for the Robert Connors Dawes (RCD) Foundation, dedicated to fighting pediatric brain cancer.

This foundation, founded

by Liz Dawes after her son, Robert, bravely battled against an ependymoma for 16 months, seeks to honor Robert’s memory and support others facing similar challenges.

Brain cancer remains a

devastating disease, particularly among young people, claiming more lives in this demographic than any other form of cancer.

Inspired by Robert’s spirit of “Aeternum Fortis,” or Eternal Strength, the RCD Foundation was established to support research and development into new treatments and diagnostics for this relentless illness.

Dustin Perry and his family have been instrumental in driving the Connors Erg Challenge forward.

Their personal connection to the cause became tragically apparent when

their daughter, Chloe, lost her battle with brain cancer.

Determined to make a difference, they rallied support from both private sectors and politicians, advocating for increased funding for research and development.

Three years ago, Dustin Perry initiated his own Connors Erg Challenge at Euroa Gym, despite having only three row machines available in the first year.

With this limited setup, he still managed to raise nearly $50,000.

Last year, the challenge grew in scale, with a goal

of $50,000 and a distance of 1000km, the day raised a massive $57,000.

Undeterred by the magnitude of the task, Dusty raised the stakes, aiming for $100,000 and a staggering 2000km this year.

The event on Saturday was a resounding success, with 15 row machines tirelessly pumping out kilometers from 6am until 11.15pm.

The community rallied around the cause, contributing both financially and through active participation.

Lindsay Park generously

donated $5000, while numerous businesses and sporting groups provided support through raffle donations.

Nagambie Rowing Club once again lent out rowing machines for the day, along with other individuals.

Special acknowledgment to Tracey Johnson and her family, who have faced their own battle with pediatric brain cancer.

Just two years ago, Tracey received the devastating news of her youngest daughter only Chelsea’s diagnosis.

Through strength and resilience, Chelsea underwent

treatments and surgeries, and today, she is on the road to recovery.

Events like the Connors Erg Challenge are instrumental in providing the necessary resources for researchers and medical professionals to continue the fight against pediatric brain cancer.

With each passing year, advancements in treatment and diagnosis offer hope to those affected by these types of cancers, thanks to the dedication of individuals and organisations like the RCD Foundation.
