ARTC Inland Rail is conducting an internal review after a contractor’s vehicle instigated a fire that spanned about 20 acres of Greg Carlson’s farm near Longwood last week. It is believed a vehicle exhaust belonging to ARTC contractors McConnell Dowell started the grass and scrub fire on Tuesday last week while workers were raising powerlines to extend the clearance

height for double-stacked freight trains. “An internal review will be conducted to ensure we continue to deliver the project in a safe manner,” an ARTC Inland Rail spokesperson said.
Air support, as well as nine CFA units from Euroa, Locksley, Longwood, Branjee, Molka and Creightons Creek, responded to the fire on Creightons Siding Road at around 12.11pm, according to the CFA. After burning through about 20 acres but causing no harm to livestock or damage to the nearby railway line, the incident was deemed under control at
1.04pm and safe at 2.19pm. Mr Carlson, a familiar local face who served as a mayor and councillor in the shire during the 90s and early 2000s, said the CFA brigades did well to prevent the fire spreading to the railway easement that intersects with his property because there is “a lot of fuel there” and “that would have caused some serious problems”. ■ Continued page 4
