Wind farm plan

A PROPOSAL has been made for the construction of a massive wind farm that will cover local areas including Ruffy and Longwood East.

The ‘Seymour Wind Farm’ proposal by Italian company Fabbrica Energie Rinnovabili Alternative (FERA) is picking up steam, with representatives from the company holding initial meetings with local community groups.

The planned wind farm will cover areas in Mitchell, Strathbogie and Murrindindi shires.

The districts include Upton Hill, Longwood East, Tarcombe, Ruffy, Terip, Cavet, Dropmore, and possibly Highlands.

Under the current timeline, construction is aiming to happen between 2025 and 2027.

Location of the wind farm was decided due to

the elevation and wind profile of the region, its main transmission line proximity and larger landholdings.

The proposed wind farm will consist of a number of wind turbines, several smaller substations within turbine groups and a main substation.

A main substation would be built at the start of an overhead transmission line, which will likely run to either Alexandra or the

Eildon Terminal Station.

Towers proposed for the project are about 200m tall to hub, with three blades estimated at 90m long each, with a total height of about 290m.

The tower base diameter is planned to be between 5m-10m dependent on design and construction material (steel or concrete).

Tower construction will require testing and certification before

construction begins.

Both FERA and the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL), through Tilt renewables, were both keen on a project in the area, and were talking to some of the same landholders.

In the last few months, the landholders that are considering hosting turbines as a group decided they preferred the FERA proposal.

Haines puts pressure on ARTC after it missed Euroa deadline oping or building train line to allow taller, double-stacked freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane, rail precincts in the towns of Euroa, Benalla, Wangaratta and Glenrowan will be redeveloped.

The ARTC originally proposed to increase the height of the current Anderson Street overpass in Euroa, but locals have campaigned instead for an underpass, arguing a higher bridge would be an eyesore and create an unnecessary division in the town.

ACCORDING to Independent Member for Indi Helen Haines, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has failed to notify the people of Euroa about its chosen design for the redevelopment of the town’s track crossing by the assigned deadline.

The government agency set itself a July 1 deadline to make the decision.

Dr Haines has called on the ARTC to come clean with the people of Euroa on the plans after years of delays and excuses.

“Well that day has come and gone, and we have heard

nothing.

“The ARTC needs to tell us what design it has recommended to the Victorian Government, and the Victo-

rian Government, which has final decision-making power, needs to tell us what is has decided.

“The people of Euroa deserve to get clarity about what the ARTC is planning for their town.

“We just need to put it to bed.”

Dr Haines said an underpass would allow the two sides of Euroa to be re-connected after being separated by the road bridge for many years.

“This is a chance for the people of Euroa to have a say in what happens in their town, for the amenity to be

improved for decades to come,” she said.

“We can’t miss this chance to get the best result for Euroa.”

Dr Haines said the ARTC and Victorian Government must communicate properly with locals.

“The ARTC has missed the deadline it set for itself on when it would tell the people of Euroa what to expect,” she said.

“Now they must either tell us what is happening for the redevelopment or set out a new timeline for when the community can expect to hear from them.”

Victorian Nationals select new deputy leader THE Victorian Nationals’ party room has selected Member for Lowan Emma Kealy as the new deputy leader following Member for Euroa Steph Ryan’s resignation from politics.

A special meeting was held last Monday to confirm the choice.

Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh congratulated Ms Kealy on her selection, adding the new leadership team will waste no time getting to work ahead of the November State Election.

“Emma has a strong reputation as a dedicated local advocate who will go above and beyond to secure the very best for the people of Lowan, which is an energy I know she’ll bring as deputy leader,” Mr Walsh said.

“As shadow minister, Emma has played a crucial role in leading the Liberals’ and Nationals’ response to support Victorians to recover and rebuild from the COVID pandemic.

“A former CEO of Edenhope hospital with a strong background in the health sector, Emma also brings a wealth of invaluable skills to her Shadow responsibilities as we continue to build our positive plan to fix Victoria’s health crisis.”

COVID outbreak contained at GraniteHill THE team at Euroa Health has happily announced that they will be lifting the COVID lockdown at the facility following the containment of the virus.

Euroa Health has returned to normal operations, including welcoming the return of visitors.

GraniteHill reopened for visitors on Thursday afternoon.

The GH cafe has been reopened this week, following the acute hospital and gym’s reopening last week.

Some procedures will remain in place for the safety of staff, resi-

dents and visitors.

All staff are to wear N95 masks whilst on duty, although shields can be removed.

Visitors will also be asked to wear N95 masks while at the facility.

Euroa Health also hopes that families consider the need for residents to go into the community as infection rates are very high at the moment.

If a resident must leave the facility they are encouraged to please wear a mask.

Dining rooms for all areas have reopened and lifestyle programs

will go back to including all areas of the facility.

Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter was very appreciative for the efforts of everyone at the facility and in the community.

“My heartfelt thanks to team Euroa Health over the last week,” she said.

“The ability to identify two infected residents and then contain the virus was a magnificent effort and highlights the great infection prevention program we have in place led by Wadin.”

New government on agenda

By GUS RIDDER INDEPENDENT Member for Indi Helen Haines was in Euroa last Wednesday to chat with local community members about their ideas, issues and concerns for the region.

Attendance was low on the particularly cold, rainy morning although Dr Haines had the opportunity to discuss her thoughts on the newly elected Federal Government.

“This is certainly a new government,” she said.

“They are getting themselves organised in terms of getting their feet under the table and arranging ministerial roles.

“It’s a whole new government so I need to establish new relationships with ministers.

“One of the exciting parts about this new government is that parliament is going to look very, very different.

“We have 16 people on the crossbench, the biggest since Federation.

“It was a historical election and we’re seeing more Independents than we’ve ever seen before.

“I’m really excited to be working with those new crossbench independents and I’ve met with several of them already.”

One of the major talking points from Dr Haines was the new government’s apparent willingness to establish a federal anti-corruption commission.

“I think other observations are that the new government has come in very clearly around their intentions on the integrity commission which was a major piece work for me in the last parliament,” she said.

“I’ve already met three times with the new attorney general about this before parliament has

“I’m very determined to work constructively with the new government and see this integrity commission legislated through parliament.

“There is no question that the pressure brought on the Morrison government about the commission made this an election issue.

“There are people that won seats in parliament based on this as a major campaigning issue.

“I won’t be satisfied until the work is completed and I’ll be holding the Labor Party’s feet to the fire in the same way that I did with the coalition to make sure that this is done.

“At this stage it’s looking optimistic, the new attorney general has been very clear that he wishes to legislate by Christmas and implement the new commission by the middle of next year.

“But we’ve got to get it right.

“It needs to be robust, it needs to be fit for purpose, we need to

have really strong protections for whistle-blowers, we need to have it retrospective, we need to have one set of rules for everyone, public hearings when appropriate and it needs to be funded in a way that we can get on with the job.

“I’m doing everything I can as an Independent member to get this to happen.

“The people of Indi have supported me very strongly in this push.

“The bill that I put to parliament last term has been lauded by all the experts as the strongest piece of legislation that we’ve got.”

Dr Haines also outlined what she had been doing since being re-elected in May and explained what she believes to be the biggest issues for the region.

“From the day I returned to my office after being re-elected I drafted letters to key ministers around the policy areas that are really important to Indi,” she said.

“This includes infrastructure

and the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) in Euroa and the big question mark around what the planning outcomes are going to be here.

“What we hope to see is details about an underpass.

“I’ve put a letter straight into Catherine King who’s the new minister for infrastructure and I’ve sought a meeting with her.

“Health is another of course, I wrote a letter to Mark Butler (Minister for Health and Aged Care) indicating the real stress we’re under in rural and regional areas such as ours.

“Workforce and managing with COVID is an area that I’ve been advocating for very strongly since I got to parliament.

“Telecommunications is a major issue for Euroa and Indi - the NBN is just absolutely not up to the standard that we require.

“The new Minister for Telecommunications is Michelle Rowland and I’ve written to her.

“I’ve also written to key ministerial positions for climate change and energy among others that are really important to our electorate.

“Housing is another one - I’ve put it to them the issues that we face.

“Local governments need assistance and infrastructure to open up land.

“We’ve got issues of supply as well as affordability and all of that feeds into the broader problem.”

Despite parliament still not having sat together since the election, Dr Haines believes that the upcoming meetings will be productive.

“Parliament has not sat yet, the first day back will be July 26 so that’s not long now,” she said.

“I’m optimistic that I’ll have those meetings with ministers to discuss these.”

GraniteHill turns into a zoo for the day

By GUS RIDDER RESIDENTS at GraniteHill were treated to a visit by Wild Action recently, with several animals making the journey to the Euroa aged-care facility.

The visit was made possible thanks to the proceeds of the Resident Easter Raffle, which raised a final total of $2740.90 for events and entertainment at the GraniteHill facility.

The raffle, in partnership with Burton’s IGA Euroa, had the goal of hosting a wildlife sanctuary visit for residents at GraniteHill.

That goal was achieved on Tuesday, July 5 when Wild Action Zoo brought several of their animals for the residents to see, hold and learn about.

Wild Action is based in the Macedon Ranges and is the largest provider of wildlife

educational incursions.

Some of the animals brought to GraniteHill included crocodiles, frogs, lizards, owls, kangaroos and more.

One particular request of the residents was to see the ‘scariest’ animal last, so that some could hide after seeing the cute and fuzzy animals.

The last animal introduced was a giant snake that some residents were brave enough to

handle despite a few nerves.

The day with the animals was the second event hosted at GraniteHill thanks to the proceeds of the Easter raffle, after the ferret racing display held in June.

Both events brought a lot of joy to all the residents, and staff, who were able to enjoy the days with the animals, despite some of them being quite scared at first.

Strathbogie Shire community groups are being encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5000 to use for the purchase and installation of outdoor Christmas decorations.

THE Victorian Government has made changes to the current Pandemic Order to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

These public health recommendations include: • receive a third and fourth COVID-19 vaccination dose; • receive a winter flu vaccination; • wearing a mask indoors and in crowded settings is strongly recommended to protect yourself and vulnerable others during winter; and • masks are still required to be worn on public transport and in some health settings.

Another round of the Small Business Ventilation Grant Program has now been opened to help businesses invest in equipment that will keep workers and customers safe in indoor settings.

Council seeks views on art policy

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is seeking public comment on its draft public art policy, adopted during its Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 21.

The draft policy provides a clear and transparent process for assessing and making decisions about the design, placement, and preservation of art in public spaces in the Strathbogie Shire.

The policy comes after a groundswell of interest from the community to establish public art to the shire’s open spaces.

Mayor Laura Binks said council was hearing the community’s desire for more public art loud and clear.

“We are eager to get your incredible projects off the

ground, but to do so, council must first adopt a public art policy,” Cr Binks said.

State call-out for forest firefighters THE State Government is recruiting 300 forest firefighters to help keep Victorians safe over the upcoming fire season.

Minister for environment and climate action Lily D’Ambrosio is encouraging Victorians who are passionate about protecting their communities and the environment to apply to work with Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) as a project firefighter over summer.

“If you are keen to work outdoors and want to be part of a diverse and inclusive team that helps protect our communities and environment, then I encourage you to apply,” she said.

“This is a great employment opportunity for regional communities and I’d encourage people from all walks of life and backgrounds to consider becoming a seasonal project firefighter.”

The Victorian Government is aiming to deliver tangible employment, training and pathway opportunities for regional communities, with project firefighters based at more than 80 locations throughout the state.

week and responding to an emergency the next no two days are the same and I encourage interested people to apply,” he said.

“Successful recruits will be fully trained and get the opportunity to work with experienced staff from a range of fire management agencies right across the state, and potentially nationally and internationally if required.”

Wind farm meetings underway ■

From page 1 This group of landholders, believed to be six to eight landholders, are said to be using one lawyer to work with the company, on the development of the FERA Landholder agreement document.

The agreement document will be used for all landholders both within and outside of this initial group.

It is proposed that the project will use locally sourced materials including steel and concrete.

The construction will also require large cranes which are in limited supply.

There are only estimated to be 20 cranes of this size in Australia, resulting in more needing to be scheduled and booked.

Each tower is proposed to take three to four weeks to be built.

In terms of a local presence, FERA will establish a local office and possibly a house that can be used for accommodation as well.

Director Cesare Sera has indicated he is keen to purchase a farming enterprise in the area too.

He said there are several jobs expected to arise from the project, with 200-250 estimated during the construction phase in addition to 10-15 for ongoing maintenance.

Many of these are planned to be local jobs.

The first meeting with the community is expected to occur in three months.

The proposed format for these discussions includes an information day where all the different consultants and companies involved in the project are made available.

Project update meetings are expected to be held quarterly.

Other proposals include a Community Benefit Fund that would be established with an annual budget provided for distribution by a committee.

This management committee of the fund is to be from the community, with

ideally, no turbine hosting landholders to be on the committee.

A preference for local landholders rather than council appointed members has been outlined.

A handful of other community projects have also been discussed, including improved mobile phone coverage, charging stations for electronic vehicles with free renewable energy and benefits for the CFA, schools, community facilities and sporting groups.

Landholders are expected to be compensated for hosting the turbines, a figure that will be based on either an annual amount or a percentage of the power generated.

Neighbouring landholders will also be eligible for compensation.

Neighbours within 1km-2km of a turbine and within 2km3km of a turbine will be eligible, including having landscaping provided to block views of turbines and compensation in the form of solar energy.

Residents in Ruffy are forming a Windfarm Community Group and will be meeting together on Sunday, July 24 to discuss the proposals with the wider community.

Haines heads to Pacific to tackle farm labour shortage INDEPENDENT Member for Indi Helen Haines will travel to Suva in Fiji to meet with the Pacific Island Forum as part of a parliamentary delegation focused on agricultural labour shortages, and Australia’s national security interests in the Pacific.

Dr Haines will be joined by members of all the major political parties and crossbench on the trip funded by Save The Children Australia.

According to Dr Haines, the invitation to attend was accepted so she could advocate for stronger workforce partnerships between Pacific nations and the Australian agricultural sector.

“Australian farmers have been struggling with workforce shortages for years - the pandemic simply made things worse,” she said.

“This is probably the number one challenge facing our farmers right now.”

Dr Haines, who grew up on a dairy farm and still runs beef cattle today, has been consulting with local farmers about their workforce needs over re-

cent weeks and said farmers are struggling right across the electorate.

“I have heard from farmers who lost 80 per cent of their crop last year simply because they couldn’t find anyone to pick it,” she said.

“They’re bracing for the same this year.

“It’s one thing in a pandemic, but we are nearly three years into this now and the borders are open - it’s time for governments to step up.”

Dr Haines criticised the new government’s policies on agricultural visas, saying the decision to scrap the former government’s plan for a dedicated visa for farm workers from South East Asia was a backwards step.

Labor’s policy will reduce the number of countries from which agricultural workers could come to Australia from, a move Dr Haines said is unhelpful.

“It was hugely disappointing to see Labor walk away from the Agricultural Visa,” she said.

“We could have been striking deals with countries like Thailand and Malaysia right now, but

instead we are back to the drawing board.

“It’s a real mistake and I have urged the agriculture minister to reverse that decision.

“It is more important than ever that a rural Independent like me is there to put forward the sensible policies on topics like agricultural labour.”

Dr Haines said her focus was now on enhancing the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme to make sure it delivers the labour force needed for local farmers.

“We have some major harvests coming up in a few months,” she said.

“Citrus is happening as we speak, pumpkins will happen in October, hops start in December with cherries not far behind.

“If we don’t have the workforce in place for these harvests, then the government will have serious questions to answer.

“I am joining with farmers to call for immediate action to expedite Pacific Island workers to come to Australia, and enough flexibility in those visa arrangements to enable people to work shorter harvests

across multiple farms.

“Longer term, we need to be looking to expand eligibility for these visas beyond the Pacific.

“If there are workers in South East Asia, or India, our South America, who want to work on Aussie farms, and farmers here who want them, why do we not enable that to happen?

“It’s pretty basic stuff.”

Dr Haines will also visit the Australia Pacific Training Coalition and will learn about opportunities for the aged care workforce to be expanded in Indi with workers from the Pacific.

“It’s not just agricultural employers who are struggling to find workers, but many other sectors as well,” she said.

“I will be making every effort to make connections to help employers back in Indi through this trip.”

The delegation will be briefed on Australia’s aid to the Pacific, visit local leaders and speak to aspiring female politicians in Fiji.

Dr Haines’ office will remain open with staff available to assist constituents in Indi on all Federal Government matters.

Local artists feature at Ruffy fundraiser AT this year’s Christmas in July fundraiser for the Ruffy Hall, guests will not only be treated to a delicious dinner but they will also have the opportunity to meet and purchase works of art from a number of local artists.

The art work will be sold through a silent auction during the evening, with the artists attending the dinner to discuss their work.

Kristen Mackenzie is a locally based artist who is very excited to collaborate with other artists in the area as part of this inaugural artistic endeavour in Ruffy.

Her artwork searches for an underlying meaning and perspective in local landscapes, people and objects both real and imagined.

Ms Mackenzie’s work is appealing to many people due to its honest and raw perspective.

She is coming off two successful solo exhibitions in Violet Town; featuring landscapes and imaginative, figurative works.

Another local artist participating will be Jamie Ferguson.

Mr Ferguson was brought up in Newcastle, New South Wales with both his mother and grandmother being painters.

His main medium is oil paint on canvas and paints predominantly from the imagination.

He is currently illustrating his second children’s book.

Simeon Ayres will be another of the participating artists in the fundraiser.

A long-time resident of Strathbogie, Mr Ayres makes maps, drawings, writes and other works in wood and found objects.

He is currently working on commissions mapping Sevens

Funding options for region LOCAL councils and community groups across the state will have the opportunity to create better public spaces and improved streetscapes through a new grant program.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced applications are open in regional Victoria for the Labor Government’s $20 million Living Local Fund.

“It’s great for our regional towns to have even more of a chance to support their local communities to build stronger connections for the future,” Ms Symes said.

“The Living Local Fund is a great initiative to provide the infrastructure and equipment that our communities need, while supporting local jobs and the economy.”

The fund aims to support a wide range of potential projects from upgraded halls to art installations and community gardens.

The fund is part of the government’s Our Regions and our Suburbs: Living Local Initiative and is designed to ensure local towns will have the infrastructure and equipment they need to continue to thrive.

Local councils and community organisations can apply for two types of grants:

• grants between $20,000 to $200,000 will be available for infrastructure projects including new playgrounds and community gardens, splash pads, art installations and community halls upgrades; and • grants between $2000 to $20,000 will also be available for local councils and community organisations to undertake minor refurbishments, buy new equipment such as kitchen appliances, laptops and audio-visual equipment.

Through Metropolitan and Regional Partnerships, the community has advocated the importance of living locally.

The fund is designed to support a wide range of locally led projects and equipment purchases for community organisations to improve livability.

Projects in areas most impacted by the pandemic and projects that align with the government’s 20-minute neighbourhood principles will be given priority.

The 20-minute neighbourhood principle aims to create local hubs where people can access services, like health facilities, parks and shops within a 20-minute walk from home.

The Living Local Fund grant applications close on Sunday, August 14.

Euroa Third Age Club news THE committee and members of the club were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Harold Joyce and wish to express their sympathy to Roma and family.

Harold was a long-time member of the club over the years and was always warmly welcomed at any event he attended.

His hugs were shared with many as were his renditions of Seven Spanish Angels, which he sang at many dances, birthday parties and other occasions.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The first Afternoon Melodies will be held at the club on Thursday, July 21 with Jimmy and Jarrod Davidson providing the entertainment from 1pm to 3.30pm - $10 entry with afternoon tea included.

The next club meeting will be held on Thursday, July 28 at 1.30pm - all are welcome.

Ruffartz returns to the delight of locals AROUND 100 brave souls from all over the region ventured to Ruffy on a cold and wet evening this past Saturday to take part in the relaunch of ‘Ruffartz’.

Ruffartz is a locally organised cultural committee that has its origins as far back as 1999.

The Committee arranged four events/shows per year to present to the local community every year until COVID put a halt on all performances.

Performances have been drawn from different and varied genres of the arts community through Arts Victoria and Just Shows to Go. For many artists, Ruffy was a venue not to be missed.

Warmed by the open fire and heated venue, attendees were entertained by fantastic musicians who pumped out those memorable Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes.

The evening went on late into the evening with the band swept up in the excitement of the audience who were once again back in the familiar and iconic Ruffy Hall.

By the end of the aptly named Creedence Clearwater Survival’s second set, 80 per cent of the audience was up on their feet.

GOTAFE appoints former minister as chair of the board FORMER Labor Minister Candy Broad has been appointed chair of the GOTAFE board.

Ms Broad takes the helm from Diana Taylor, who had been chair since August 2019.

Deputy chair, Angela Verde, also stepped down after six years of service.

Ms Broad brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Appointed to the GOTAFE

board in September 2021, she holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is a graduate of the Institute of Company Directors and the Institute of Superannuation Trustees and is an experienced company director.

Ms Broad was a Victorian Government Minister for seven years, with a total of 15 years of parliamentary experience.

“I am looking forward to being a strong ambassador and champion for GOTAFE and vocational education across regional Victoria,” she said.

“As we continue to implement our education and strategic plans, we must continue to place our students at the centre of everything we do.

“I would like to acknowledge the invaluable

leadership of both Diana Taylor and Angela Verde.

LABOR’S election promises, if fully implemented, would deepen the budget deficit by $6.9 billion over the four financial years to 2025/26, a report has found.

Costings for election promises made by the major parties have been released by the Parliamentary Budget Office. Labor’s deficits would total $231.4 billion over four years.

The governing party’s election pledges point to a $79 billion budget deficit for 2022/23, dropping to $58.6 billion the following year.

The biggest costs identified by the office are for Labor’s social protection, public services and health policies.

The Greens’ policies would contribute to the largest deficits of the three parties over the same period,

totalling $250.6 billion.

The biggest costs would be a policy to make TAFE and university free, raise welfare payments and increase foreign aid spending.

Indi Independent MP Helen Haines was the only independent to submit her policies to the office for review.

The commitment with the largest impact on the budget is Dr Haines’ minimum aged care staff times policy, which would create a $15.2 billion deficit over the next 10 years.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers plans to hand down his first budget on October 25, preceded by an economic update this month.

The PBO uses the 2022 Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Outlook report as the baseline for the costings.

The LapreCorn is back

By RAY READ. COROWA motor racing enthusiast Terry Cornelius has been a long-standing supporter of the Australian National Show and Shine Euroa, displaying a variety of vintage racing cars.

In 2019 he brought something special in the form a race car that was virtually home-made by a series of owners, the LapreCorn.

It looks like a Maserati, has a name that sounds like a small Irish fairy, and has been over sixty years in the making.

In early 2019, the Corowa Free Press reported on Terry’s project.

“A long-time historic and speedway racer, Terry said this ‘grey’ Holden engined special was laid down by prominent special builder Don Lapham of Orange,” they said.

“Don had big plans for his creation, but the project stalled indefinitely prior to 1960.

“By that stage, it was a well formed tubular chassis with its suspension and steering principles and drive-line in place.”

Sydney’s Tony Skinner became its next owner, but no further progress was made until Terry acquired the rolling chassis in 1990.

In spite of its progress, it remained stalled for a further extended period but good strides have been made in recent times.

The chassis is of a tubular space frame construction, incorporating a ‘Grey’ Holden engine with triple SU carburettors adapted to a Singer Nine 4-spd gearbox driving a heavily modified Holden differential centre which supports early Holden brakes mounted inboard.

Rear suspension is via a transverse spring with modified FC Holden (front) lower control arms and employing made-up uprights.

Earlier in 2022, the LapreCorn made an appearance at the Winton historic meeting in May, with Terry’s daughter Chelsea at the wheel.

Unfortunately, a suspension

problem cut the car’s appearance short, but Terry has specifically asked if he could bring it to this year’s show and shine.

Terry told us about the story behind the car’s intriguing name of LapreCorn.

The surname of the original builder was “LAPham”.

This was before it reached the current owner, “CORNelius.”

So, a combination of parts of these names became Lap (pre) Corn.

With a name which sounds curiously like leprechaun, the legendary Irish fairy who guards the legendary pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it was

reasonable that there should be some connection to that name.

As a result, Terry devised a logo for the car, consisting of a very individual couple of stickers on the sides which signify a tiny Leprechaun where the 3-tiered crown of the Maserati would be.

So, what’s the connection to Maserati?

Having attended the early Grands Prix at Albert Park in the late 1950s together with his father Arthur, Terry had developed a love for the 250F Maserati.

Fashion parade fundraiser enjoyed in Violet Town VIOLET Town held their inaugural op-shop fashion parade last week on Tuesday, July 12.

The event was organised by the Violet Town Community House in conjunction with the Violet Town op shop, with the

fantastic day having around 65 people in attendance.

A delicious afternoon tea was served and $760 was raised through door entrance fees, raffle tickets and the purchase of clothes and accessories being modelled.

There were eight beautiful models who participated in the parade, including Strathbogie Shire Councillor Chris Raeburn.

It truly was an excellent day, with fun had by all who participated or attended.

The funds raised from the parade will go towards new signage for the Violet Town op shop.

The organisers with to extend an enormous thank you to all the volunteers that made the day possible.

Treasurer touts possible sanction ease A POTENTIAL easing of Chinese trade sanctions against Australia would be a welcome development, according to the treasurer.

Amid reports China is looking at ending sanctions on Australian coal exports after a two-year ban, Jim Chalmers said the development was a sign of relations stabilising between the two countries.

“Clearly, that would be good news for our exporters and we’d like to see it

happen,” Dr Chalmers told Sky News on Sunday.

“We’ve made it clear, really for the whole duration so far of this government, that an important part of stabilising relations with China is to see some of those sanctions lifted on our employers here in Australia.”

Exports such as coal, barley, wine and lobster have been banned from being sent to China following a diplomatic break-

down with Australia.

Dr Chalmers said while the possibility of an end to coal export sanctions was promising, he wanted that to be extended further.

“We’d like to see it not stop there, it should extend to the restrictions that are placed on some of our other exports as well, in the interests of our employers and our exporters here in Australia,” he said.

The comments come after Foreign Minister Penny

Wong met with her Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 in Bali earlier this month.

The meeting was the first face-to-face discussions between foreign ministers in almost three years following the diplomatic freeze between the countries.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said he welcomed the resumption of diplomatic relations with China.

However, he said the government should continue

to push China on its sanctions and military build up.

“If the government’s got a dialogue and it’s a productive dialogue, then of course it should be pursued,” Mr Dutton told Sky News on Sunday.

“But if we’re just being handled, then that’s not a productive use of time.

The Australian government needs to be serious in the discussions and we need to ask China to explain the human rights abuses.”

WELCOME RETURN: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the return of the Federal Government’s $750 COVID isolation payment.

Mr Dutton said should there be further discussions, it was critical to ensure China would not head down a path of further militarisation.

“It’s not unreasonable to ask China, if we’re having meaningful discussions with them, that they take concrete actions to demonstrate to us that they’re not heading down the path that the rest of the world believes them to be,” he said.

Govt reverses plan to cancel pandemic leave UNIONS, medical experts and businesses have welcomed the federal government’s choice to reinstate the $750 pandemic isolation payment following widespread criticism.

Speaking after a fast-tracked national cabinet meeting on Saturday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said continuing the payment was appropriate with cases rising across the country.

“I want to make sure that people aren’t left behind, that vulner-

able people are looked after and that no-one is left with the unenviable choice of not being able to isolate properly without losing an income,” he told reporters in Sydney.

The backflip means emergency payments for people who don’t have sick leave but are forced to isolate due to COVID-19 will be reinstated from July 20 and last through to September 30.

The scheme originally lapsed on June 30.

The Commonwealth will split the $780 million bill with the states and territories but the prime minister could not say whether the payments would later be extended past September 30.

Both the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Council of Trade Unions welcomed the return of the payments, with ACTU secretary Sally McManus saying it meant workers didn’t have to choose between isolating and putting food on the table.

Antiviral scripts via GP phone consults MEDICARE will cover long consultations by GPs to prescribe COVID-19 antivirals within days.

Health Minister Mark Butler says the new temporary MBS items will include a longer consultation by phone so antivirals can be issued safely and to as many people as possible.

Millions of Australians are now eligible for antiviral access via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme but need to start taking them within five days of symptoms.

Following a COVID-19 positive diagnosis, they will be able from next week to have a telephone or video consulta-

tion with a doctor to obtain a prescription, Mr Butler says.

“These antiviral medicines dramatically reduce the risk of severe disease, particularly for older Australians, and will help keep people out of hospital,” he said on Saturday.

“Two antivirals are on the PBS meaning these treatments that normally cost more than $1000 will only be $6.80 for a concession card holder, and around $40 for everyone else.

“Doctors have told me it will be easier to get antivirals prescribed if they have access to this telehealth measure and that is why the government has acted today.”

Mr Butler says people will need to be quick.  Thousands of Australians have already received the new treatments, with prescriptions doubling in the first days of July to around 14,000 per week.

Details of the MBS items will be available at www. mbsonline.gov.au. They will remain on the MBS until the end of October.

Mr Butler says the government’s priority remains getting people vaccinated.

“If you haven’t had your third or fourth dose, please book a free COVID-19 vaccine appointment today,” he said.

Australian Medical Association president Dr Omar Khorshid said isolation payments should be in place for as long as they’re needed.

“The payments should never have been removed,” he said on Saturday.

Mr Albanese warned Australians of the $1 trillion debt his government inherited.

“We do need to act on this (debt) and all state and territory governments understand that as well,” Mr Albanese said.

“The truth is that we have real fiscal pressures and the measures put in place were temporary measures.”

Meanwhile, Dr Khorshid said mask mandates should also be considered as a new coronavirus wave hits the country.

State premiers and Mr Albanese all urged Australians to wear masks where necessary, practice good hygiene and isolate to help curb cases.

Dead white whale in Vic not famed Migaloo A WHALE that washed up dead on a beach in Victoria’s far east is not the famed albino humpback Migaloo, authorities have confirmed.

The white carcass was found at a Mallacoota beach in the state’s East Gippsland region, near the NSW border, and is only accessible by water.

Victoria’s environment department has allayed fears it is Migaloo, who has not been spotted for two years after losing his tracking chip.

“DELWP Officers have examined images of the dead humpback whale at Mallacoota and have confirmed it is a sub-adult female. Miga-

loo is a male,” Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning regional agency commander Peter Brick said on Sunday.

“DELWP and Parks Victoria staff will be further assessing the carcass over coming days.

“I urge anyone in the area not to approach within 300 metres of the carcass.”

The famous white humpback was first sighted in 1991 off Byron Bay, when he was believed to be between three and five years old.

He was dubbed Migaloo, an indigenous word for white person.

Macquarie University

wildlife scientist Vanessa Pirotta says photos showing a dark patch of skin under barnacles on the throat was another sign the whale is not Migaloo.

“It seems to be most likely a white whale or at least a whale that has been a darker pigmentation that potentially has passed out at sea and washed ashore and been weathered over time,” she told ABC TV on Sunday.

“When you can see the barnacles attached to that black area there, that indicates that was external skin because we have barnacles on the outer layer of these animals.”

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Cattle Council talks FMD impact on industry THE Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) has moved to reassure cattle producers that significant steps are being taken to protect the industry after the detection of Foot and Mouth Disease in Bali.

CCA president Lloyd Hick said Australian beef cattle producers were right to be concerned by the threat.

“This disease would gut our industry and can easily travel back to Australia on clothing,” Mr Hick said.

“Cattle Council expects the biosecurity response to increase whenever there is an increased threat.

“Biosecurity resources must be used in the best way possible, to maximise protection to our industry.

“The steps Minister Watt has announced to protect the livestock industry so far are a good start.

“CCA is closely engaged with the Federal Government regarding increased biosecurity safeguards.

“The government has committed to select returning flights at random and screening everyone onboard.

“This will mean more bags are opened and more items that may carry the disease inspected.

“This increases the chance of catching people who do the wrong thing and acts as a deterrent.

“People who are caught and prosecuted face fines of up to $1.1 million and 10 years in jail.

“However, the government should also review its on-the-spot fines that are capped at $2660.

“Sometimes fines of a few hundred dollars are issued, but the risk to our industry and Australian economy is

in the billions.

“This is a massive imbalance, particularly when someone has deliberately made a false declaration.

“Immigration should also look at cancelling visas for people who make false biosecurity declarations.

“Increasing penalties and the risk of being caught will make travellers more cautious.

“It is better to have travellers declaring too much than too little.

“It’s also important to recognise this is not the last line of defence against foot and mouth disease.

“An up-to-date biosecurity plan can prevent Foot and Mouth Disease from reaching your property.

“People who have recently travelled to these areas should also take all necessary steps to decontaminate or be kept off your farm.”

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE: The Cattle Council of Australia has released a statement reassuring producers that the industry will be looked after following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Bali.

Avert disaster this Farm Safety Week by checking hazards THIS week is National Farm Safety Week across the country, with the theme being chosen as ‘Recipe for Averting Disaster’.

This will focus on a number of intangible risks and hazards such as fatigue, complacency, the blurred line between the home and work environment, labour shortages and the aging workforce, wellbeing and many other issues that combine to make Australian farms one of the most dangerous work environments.

Farmsafe Australia will be running a national campaign to raise awareness of these risks and hazards.

In 2021 there were 46 fatalities on Australian farms.

This is 12 fewer lives lost

when compared to both 2019 and 2020 and is a significant step forward for the industry.

But despite this step, 46 lost farmers is still a tragedy.

As the next step to reducing this number, Farmsafe Australia are urging farmers to consider many of the intangible factors that lead to farm workplace injuries and fatalities.

Everyday farmers across Australia work in high-risk environments where serious injury and death are a primary concern.

Felicity Richards, chairperson at Farmsafe Australia, applauds the progress the Australian farming industry has made towards safety; however, she believes

Having open conversations and reminding farmers that harm can be more than physical is necessary to change our national approach to farm safety.

“There are so many resources available to farmers and technology is constantly developing to improve the safety of farms,”

Ms Richards said.

“Continuing safety education and sparking conversations around lesser-known areas of safety is essential in continuing to combat farm tragedies.

“Every time we avoid and injury or fatality, we can celebrate the positives.

“Every farmer understands the unique risks that come with working on their own farm.

“Taking one extra moment to weigh up factors such as fatigue, mental health or complacency is a first step towards creating a safer environment.”

PERSONALS: Happy 80th Birthday parties were celebrated by Brendan Dalrymple and Doris Whitling last week with their family and friends.

Both were born in the old Nagambie Hospital in the same week in 1942.

Birthday greetings go to Sheree Savage, Connor Mitchell, Hugh Lawrence, Perry Tranter, Matthew Hull, Nicole Hoskin, Matt Spencer, Megan O’Brien, Ann Burns, Ivor Brook, Stuart Langley, Fay Hateley, Michael Sidebottom, Nick Friedrich and Jack Thomson.

Sympathy goes to the family and friends of Herma Duthie.

Herma and I used to do local newspaper work at the same time.

I was able to perform her memorial service last Friday for her family in Seymour.

AUSTRALIA DAY: Members of the Avenel RSL and Avenel CWA were invited to a meeting at the Seymour RSL in the mid 1980s to learn about the “Save our Australian Flag campaign” and the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign.

Annie Young and I Di Laverie (now Grant) attended.

The upshot was for local towns to form an Australia Day committee to hold some small Australia Day celebrations each year.

They were donated around $100 towards refreshments for Australia Day attendees by the Seymour Keep Australia Beautiful committee (then councils chipped in later on).

The towns were encouraged to keep our Australian flag flying at all town functions.

The “Keep Australia beautiful” campaign also began to take root.

Avenel entered into the Tidy Towns “Keep Australia Beautiful” competition in the 1980s and won a regional prize.

Our first Australia Day celebrations were held in Jubilee Park and a small band of CWA and RSL ladies made afternoon tea in the tennis clubrooms.

The flag raising was done by the Brownies or RSL personnel and someone spoke on what Australia meant to them.

Later on, Australia Day awards were formed and are still being presented to locals worthy of recognition.

I was very proud to be a part of these inaugural celebrations and the Tidy Towns competition with my Avenel Youth Group members and the community and have attended an Australia Day activity ever since.

I was awarded an Australia Day Council Achievement award in1994 for my services to the Seymour Community and in 2015 I was awarded the Strathbogie Shire wide Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for services to my community here.

I was thrilled that some of my family was present at these Australia Day celebrations as they have always supported me with my endeavours.

I would like to see Australia Day remain on January 26 as our national day.

I say this without disrespect, to any person, creed or race.

We are now a multi-cultural country and our new citizens are very proud to be sworn in as new Aussies on that day.

It means a lot too many people in many ways but it binds us all as Australians.

I hope our councillors consult more with their constituents that they represent before making a call on any changes for Australia Day after 2023.

Award winning author returns to GV GOULDBURN Valley Libraries will be welcoming awardwinning author and playwright Margaret Hickey back to its libraries this week.

Margaret Hickey is based in North East Victoria and holds a PhD in Creative writing, specialising in depictions of landscape in Australian literature.

LONGWOOD INDOOR BOWLS Another fantastic afternoon of bowls was had again this week, but it seemed to be that if you won the first game you lost the second.

There was still a lot of good bowling going on.

All the ball winners this week are playing at least twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday.

As it turned out the Nagambie team came away four & one winners playing against Kyabram Valley View at Shepparton this then progressed Nagambie into next week’s final.

This will be the first appearance in a final since 2016 so good luck to Graeme and his team. Next week’s local golf will be a Par event with J. Lodding on office duty and H. Lawrence in the bar.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB SATURDAY’S junior event was a two person Ambrose sponsored by local identity, Bill Donovan and we thank Bill very much for his support.

With 11 players in the field the kids agreed to let coach Alex join the draw for players to even the numbers but he was only allowed to use a seven iron and a putter and his handicap was -five.

Rayden Hannigan drew the short straw and had to carry the old bloke around the course but they managed 21 nett to finish in third place.

Our youngest team in the field came in second place with the dynamic duo of Ruby Hannigan and Kevin Traynor shooting a 19 nett in a fantastic performance.

The winners of the day were Lachlan O’Brien and Layla Smith.

Lachy continuing his great form and Layla chiming in with some quality shots for her first win.

They scored 17 nett for

the six holes played.

Apparently Alex had a perfect view of the shot of the day.

Standing behind the 18th green, he watched Archie Butler’s tee shot actually go over the hole for a near hole in one.

Archie took home the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza and Gardens Voucher for this incredible effort.

Everyone really enjoyed the day so we will look to run more of these team events moving forward.

Unfortunately, the senior results weren’t to hand when the notes were being prepared but will be included in next week’s results.

Saturday’s event is stroke/Monthly medal.

The club hosted the DDGA Vets on Thursday with 27 players in attendance to tackle the par three course.

Many thanks to David Fullager for setting up the course and running the event on behalf of the club and also to Anne Burns and Joyce White for catering for our visitors.

We also had the honour of hosting Robin Steers’ farewell and wish to thank the many people who generously brought along delicious food to share.

Also, a big thankyou to our ladies who worked tirelessly in the kitchen making sure things went smoothly.

Towners secure important win KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN ON a cold day Violet Town welcomed Tallygaroopna to the recreation reserve in an important game for the Towners.

A few worried brows around the club with a number of key personnel unavailable, this turned to fruition when the visitors kicked the opening four goals.

The Towners did get on the board late in the first quarter to be 16 points down at the siren.

Thankfully the boys clicked and proceeded to kick the next 19 goals out of 21 to win in the end by 91 points.

The cream rose to the top, Jack Exell kicked 13 goals in a wonderful display of forward craft, what can he do when his partner in crime returns over the next week or two Josh Mellington.

Jack had 21 kicks and two handballs in his best on ground performance.

Best on could have gone to a few others however, Ollie Ford may have captured the eye of the umpires for the last three weeks too, 47 possessions, 19 contested this beast is just getting bigger and fitter, Matt McCarty who plays like he is in his twenties helped his mate out with 32 touches himself and was one of few to stand up in the first quarter.

In a game of huge possessions, Baldwin again saluted

(33), Nick Brazil (29) and playing his best game of the year.

Jett Bewick off either half back or the wing gave the statistician nightmares, 41 Kicks and eight handballs he was subline.

The coach, the veteran and the skipper weren’t bad, Horsburgh kicked two, Ross was superb down back and Jennings in his new role up forward was brilliant.

This week we travel to Hume Highway rival Longwood, hopefully a few inclusions in a must win game the way results have fallen this round.

Volunteers of the week go to Lachlan Ellis, took on game day manager in the absence of Matt Holmes, big shoes to fill, did that, played full back at 2 o’clock, cleaned up and locked up at night ends, and Tim H who was dobbed in to do the electronic scoreboard.

A Thursday night regular, we as a club are better because of these two individuals, take a bow you two, we appreciate everything you do, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

THE Hua Hin cricket sixes tournament in Thailand is an extremely well known event within the cricket community.

The event has been running for over 25 years and can be described as a “fantastic place to go”, where competitors and spectators are well looked after and enjoy their time meeting mutual lovers of the game and playing some highly competitive cricket.

Many senior first class cricketers are known to take “working holidays” to Hua Hin and enjoy the high standard of international competition.

Located only three hours south of Bangkok, the weather at the tournament is notoriously sunny with excellent beaches close by and golf only thirty minutes away, it is no wonder Euroa local and cricket extraordinaire Tim Jackson found himself on the “Melbourne Vets” team competing at Hua Hin this year.

A teammate described Tim as “a humble, quiet and modest person”, but said that it is clear that Tim was a very talented cricketer in his younger days and that his skills have very much stuck with him.

The Melbourne Vets

played off against eight other veteran teams throughout the tournament, showing them all to the door one by one and taking out the competition.

The tournament also includes a “masters” level of competition, which teams travel from all over the world to play in, one hailing all the way from Bangladesh, one from Kolkata, representatives from the Melbourne Cricket Club

and many members of the Thai national cricket team.

The event boasted fifteen competing teams and housed over 150 people at the local hotel for the span of the tournament.

In pre-Covid days the event has hosted over 20 teams and hundreds more players and spectators.

Tim was one of the only players in the tournament that succeeded in both bowling and batting, which earned him the “leading player of the tournament” title.

The game is played with six players including a wicket keeper, five people aside fielding and bowling. The game itself is played in five overs, and may take around forty minutes per game.

Tim put on a clinic of batting and bowling prowess and was able to sustain that across the entire tournament, catching the eyes and admiration of his fellow teammates, who described him as “clearly the best veteran player there”.

Junior netballers can’t stop winning streak in Shepparton UNDER 11 EUROA BLACK THIS week the girls played against Goulburn valley grammar.

It was a slow start for the girls, with grammar off to a good start scoring two goals for first quarter leading Euroa to nil.

Ellie, Isla, lara grace willow all tried hard to get ball for Euroa.

Bethan and Maisy tried very hard in defence together trying stop grammar scoring.

Second quarter was a slight change up positions, with Euroa scoring first goal of the quarter.

The girls were starting to get in front more to get ball and the team work was a lot

better.

In third quarter the Euroa girls came out on fire.

They took on board what coach Kim had said.

Willow, Bethan, Ellie, Maisy and Kara all worked hard with some great passes.

Isla called for her passes and Bethan’s strong and determined play made for a great quarter with grace shooting well along with Bethan.

In the last quarter it was a whole team effort with some strong play and great passes down the court.

It was a great team effort by all girls to take home the win 17-6, with every one of the girls putting in a great effort.

Award winners today were Maisy and Bethan.

UNDER 11 EUROA WHITE ROUND nine of the Shepparton Netball Association Saturday competition saw the Under 11’s Euroa White section two team take on Kialla West Blue.

The girls were eager to hit the court after a few weeks off with a bye and the school holiday break.

Both teams were feeling the chilly conditions as they took to the court.

First quarter: Play started, and Euroa’s centre court of Tully Watson in C, Zara Hill in WA and Leila Thompson is WD all combining well to move the ball for-

ward.

This teamwork allowed Bridie Simpson in GA to score three goals with support from Daisy Cameron in GS. Adelaide Downie in GK and Chloe Squires in GD were rock solid in defence.

Second quarter: Chloe Squires in C set up some great passages of play through the midcourt.

In defence Brianna Maher in GK and Adelaide Downie in GD did a fabulous job limiting Kialla to only one goal.

Leila Thompson in WA intercepted opposition passes enabling Euroa take possession and send the ball down to Bridie Simpson in GS and Zara Hill in GA who com-

bined well together to add three more goals to Euroa’s score.

Third quarter It was a busy quarter for Euroa’s hard-working defence of Tully Watson in GK and Chloe Squires in GD, with Kialla scoring three goals.

The midcourt work from Brianna Maher in C, Leila Thompson in WA and Bridie Simpson in WD was intense with lots of intercepts and loose balls being chased, the girls never giving up.

Violet Town netballers defeated by strong Tallygaroopna side KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN A GRADE VIOLET Town went into the game expecting a challenge.

The girls came out strong in attack; however they struggled to match Tallygaroopna on the score board.

The Towners made some changes in the second quarter.

The goalers, Meg and Teagan worked well and rewarded the team with more goals.

Kolby and Jayde worked really hard in defence to get some intercepts and rebounds, limiting the goals scored by Tallygaroopna.

There were more changes after half time from the Towners, trying to get the right combination on court.

The mid court worked well to bring the ball down and feed into the ring.

The defenders kept Tally to only nine goals.

Violet Town kept their heads up and put up a fight in the last quarter, however Tallygaroopna fought back and took the win by 22 goals.

Final score VT 25 def by Tallygaroopna 47.

Best on Kolby Wild, Second Best Jayde Burden.

B GRADE VIOLET Town started off slow, but gained momentum as the quarter went on, steadily getting the score back to only three goals down.

In the second quarter, the Towners started off stronger in both attack and defence.

However, the accurate shooting of the Tallygaroopna goalers gave them the break at half time.

After half time, Violet Town moved the ball down the court well.

The defensive pressure was strong with good intercepts and rebounds.

C GRADE IT was a slow start for C grade this week, up against a well drilled Tallygaroopna.

The girls were able to get the ball down the court and into the circle, however accuracy let the Towner’s down.

At the end of half time, the team were 22 goals down.

Some changes in the third quarter worked well, with some great passages of play and movement of the ball.

Unfortunately, during the fourth quarter, the Towners had to play with only six po-

sitions; however they put up a good fight and tried hard right through to the end of the game.

Final score VT 18 def by Tallygaroopna 55.

Best on Court Lauren Manley, Second Best Bri Cotchin.

15 & UNDER VIOLET Town had a tough game this week against Tallygaroopna.

The first quarter saw the Towners able to get the ball into the ring with some great passes. Unfortunately, in the second quarter, Tallygaroopna increased their defensive pressure and pace of the ball, which the girls were unable to match with.

After half time, Violet Town came back strong, chasing down loose balls and got in front of the opposition for more passes down the court.

They were able to intercept the ball to create turnovers, but were unable to convert these turnovers into goals.

In the end, Tallygaroopna were too strong for the Towners, but they kept their heads up and kept fighting for the whole 60 minutes.

Final score VT 10 def by Tallygaroopna 31.

Awards went to Gabby McIntosh and Alexis Kloot 13 & UNDER IT was another tough game for the 13s this week.

During the first quarter, the girls struggled to bring the ball down the court to the goal ring.

At quarter time, they were given some directions to get in front of their players.

This helped the Towners and they worked hard to drive the ball down the court.

Throughout the court, the girls had great defensive work and the pressure they put on Tallygaroopna was excellent all game.

It was good to see each player calling for the ball loudly and clearly.

The girls put in a huge effort, but in the end Tallygaroopna walked away with the win.

Winter tennis competition returns

By RHONDA CARPENTER LOCAL rivals Mansfield Red and Mansfield Black had the perfect chance to scope out their opponents for the local derby.

Both teams had planned practice sessions alongside each other the previous Monday at the Elvin’s Street courts.

The friendly banter began early.

Black team was impacted by last minute ill-health and work commitments, and fill-ins were sought but not easily found.

Players would need to shorten the number of sets played and include five players.

Red generously allowed them to do that.

Pre-match discussion centred on early hours Wimbledon watching.

Black began strongly taking the first two sets eightone.

After the fast start the tempo shifted with longer rallies and multiple deuces in the games. Red’s Karyn Fraser and Jo O’Brien went game for game in their set against Black’s Di Ellis and Rhonda Carpenter to reach four all.

Red put power and spin into their groundstrokes and placed the ball superbly to race away to a seven-four lead.

Black rallied but Red held firm winning eight-six.

Terip’s Cindy Hayes, Frances Lawrence, Bec Lyttle and Jenny Martin were convincing in their opening sets against Moglonemby winning the first three: eight-one, eight-three and eight-nil. Marlene Hanrahan and Lyn Johnston combined strongly to win eight-three for Moglonemby in theirs, while Sue Vaughan and Lenore Mundy managed five games in theirs.

Terip won five/45 to Moglonemby one/20.

Benalla’s Kate Campbell, Clare Sharp, Maureen Jew-

ell, and Deb Siggers showed why they are top of the ladder, winning every set bar one against a determined Mansfield Blue.

Sophie Yencken and Debbie Moore won that set in a tiebreaker.

Blue’s Clare Beecham and Michelle Pigdon secured six games in their opening tussle and Pigdon and Moore went down in another breaker.

Benalla won the lengthy battle five/47 to one/32.

Next week Black host Benalla, Moglonemby host Blue and Euroa host Terip.

Red has the bye.

U16 footballers lose out in catch up match

Tough conditions make for small crowd of shooters THE monthly Mansfield Clay Target Club shoot was held on Sunday, July 17 in cold windy conditions. Ongoing rain throughout the day was forecast but did not eventuate, however the forecast kept many of the normal shooters at home in front of the fire.

As a result, a small dedicated number of competitors made up three squads from 14 shooters included representatives from Alexandra, Euroa, Yarrawonga and Wangaratta.

The events for the day included a five target point score eye-opener, 25 Double Barrel Cash Divide, 30 Point score Championship and finally a 20 Pair Deauville Doubles.

All events were generously sponsored by Foster Legal.

Event one got underway in challenging variable wind conditions.

Taking out the prizes were AA grade, Daryl Hunt (Yarrawonga); A grade, Marty McLachlan (Mansfield); B grade, John Winters and Alan Kidd (Mansfield); C grade, Carson Weingott (Mansfield Junior).

Shooters went straight into the 25 target Double Barrel event with the following winners.

AA and A grade combined Daryl Hunt 24/25; B grade, Alan Kidd 24/25; C grade, Carson Weingott 25/25.

All shooters adjourned for a warming lunch before it was back into the conditions for the 30 target Point Score, two for second barrel and three for a first barrel break.

At the end of this round no one was clean with Darryl Hunt taking out AA, A and overall 89/90.

B grade John Winters 74/90 and C grade David Luelf 78/90.

Deauville Doubles is shot in teams of two with each team being presented with a simultaneous pair of targets, shooters at the 18 meter mark.

Both targets in each pair must be broken to record a score.

The Championship was taken out by the team comprising Darryl Hunt and Marty McLachlan shooting 18 pair, closely followed by Carson Weingott and David Luelf with 17 pair.

Overall a great day was had by all with shooters and club members participating to ensure a smoothly run

competition with everyone chipping in with scoring, refereeing and keeping the clubhouse fire burning.

Mansfield Clay Target Club hosts competition the third Sunday of each month; the next monthly program will be 10.30am, Sunday 15th August.

EJFNC FOOTBALL UNDER 16 THE Euroa FNC under 16 team had one of their two ‘catch-up’ matches take place last Friday evening (these are needed as some teams do not have under 16 teams in the competition).

As they took on the Shepparton Bears at Deakin Reserve, coach Matt Mills and football manager John Anderson had things very well organised for this clash under lights.

With a very cold evening greeting both teams the Euroa side on were off to a slow start, Shepparton showing great efficiency with the ball and making it count on the scoreboard.

It wasn’t until the second quarter that Euroa scored its first goal in the trying conditions.

Despite the urging by a small but vocal crowd the Magpies found it difficult to follow up their initial goal with Shepparton continually applying pressure.

As the game wore on, Shepparton continued to extend their lead although Euroa were finally able to push back in the last quarter, kicking two more goals.

Unfortunately Euroa were defeated on the night yet took much from the game knowing a few unavailability’s are due back into the team soon - perhaps even as early as this weekend when the team welcomes Shepparton Swans to Memorial Oval in Euroa for their round 14 clash on July 23.

Final scores: Shepparton 11.10. 76 defeated Euroa 3.

9. 27 Goal scorers: Will Creevey, Cohen Paul and Sam Leigh UNDER 13 COLD and wet conditions greeted Yea for their round 11 clash.

The first quarter was largely played in Euroa’s forward fifty with Yea’s defenders holding them out well.

Ollie R kicked the first goal whilst also on ruck duties. Kobe Ross started the game well with three strong marks.

Sustained on the ball pressure from Euroa in the second quarter was taking its toll on Yea with Ethan kicking two goals and Ollie W was rewarded for a good quarter with a goal.

A good clearance from Addi found Sam M twenty out who kicked Euroa’s fifth.

Kobe Ross continued his good game starting off the third quarter with a goal.

Yea tried valiantly getting on the scoreboard after a few repeated forward entries resulting in their first goal.

Conditions got worse with the heavens opening up in the fourth quarter.

Euroa adjusted well with Ollie R getting a few possessions and Patrick Murphy kicked the magpies eighth.

Yea had a good passage of play with a few marks and kicks and narrowly missed a chance in front. Berto kicked the ninth goal late in the game to round off a solid performance with a 53 point win.

Two teams draw in junior netball extravaganza EJFNC UNDER 15 NETBALL EUROA hosted the undefeated Yea in driving rain & freezing cold on Memorial Pond.

First quarter was played mostly in our defensive area with the opposition piling on 15 majors.

The ever reliable Pittock sisters (Maggie & Charlie) along with Georgia certainly had their work cut but they stuck to the task at hand.

On the few times we were able to get forward through Maya & Caitlin’s passing shots we were able to score four times with Bronti bagging three & Ella one.

Second quarter started again with our defence under extreme heat from constant attack from the opposition.

The game was played this side of the court for most of the quarter.

To all the players credit they passed and handled the ball extremely well despite the terrible conditions.

Coach Jazzy quietly rounded her troops into a tight huddle & the writer does not know what was said but whatever it was it paid dividends.

A new team bounced onto the court with vigour, verve & voice.

Our team took some risks with long passing and plenty

of yap.

Ella, Jade, Caitlin, Bronti & Maya having input. We left the opposition shell shocked with a magnificent 11 goals to three quarter.

Fourth quarter saw all players starting to tire.

Yea started to win more of the ball leaving Charlie & Maggie to again work hard in defence.

It was great to see some of our lesser experienced girls gaining confidence and knowing they belong. Final score 43 - 22 in a hard fought game.

UNDER 13 IT was a cold winter’s day for round 11 in the under 13s netball game with a few stumbles on the wet court.

However both teams gave everything they had for a nail biting draw keeping the spectators captivated with the lead going back and forth.

Yea scored the first two goals and seemed to be gaining early momentum until the Euroa girls got the ball down to GA Lily Asquith who shot an impressive goal from the outer goal line to put Euroa on the board.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS: Two of the three Euroa junior netball teams managed to tie the scores with Yea. running and made some good interceptions in the defence stopping some yea goals.

After a close and gripping second quarter, Euroa was up by two goals leading the game eight-six.

The third quarter saw yea

shoot the first three goals in a bid to get back in front, but Euroa kept the pressure on and hit back with four goals in a raw and again Euroa was back in front leading 10-9 with more back and forth on the scoreboard the quarter ended

with Euroa leading 13-11.

The final quarter saw both teams come back to the court with some fire in their bellies to take the win home and left all those watching on the edge of their seats.

Yea scored the first goal with Euroa hitting back with a goal until Yea got back in front leading 19-16 with moments to go Zahara Johns was able to sink a goal for Euroa resulting in a draw.

Final score 17-17.

Avie Hill played a great game in centre and was given the ‘Encouragement Award’ for her hard earned efforts.

UNDER 11 THE under 11s braved the cold rainy weather to take on Yea at home for what was a low scoring but great contested game between the two clubs.

Audrey Anderson and Asha Embling worked well together in the goals to give Euroa a great first quarter score of three goals.

Sissy Davey and Mable Tilton combined to provide a strong defence, intercepting and rebounding.

Captain Lylah Hamill consistently made great space in the midcourt during the second quarter.

Evie Buchanan shot a

beautiful goal, with the help of Grace Burden in the goals.

Seeing both teams finish the second quarter with only one goal each.

In the third quarter Sissy and Charlotte Burden worked hard to keep Yea scoreless.

The girls had everyone on the edge of their seats in the final quarter delivering an outstanding team effort, however were unable to convert any attempts in the goal ring into goals.

Netballers take first win of the season KDFNL NETBALL LONGWOOD A GRADE A GRADE were determined from the first quarter until the fourth in our match up against the competitive Dookie side.

With our bare seven again, we worked tirelessly to contest the play, and convert our opportunities.

Dookie proving to be the stronger side of the day, has not deterred our intent to continue building the formations and plays that are working well for our side this year. Best on to the goaling accuracy, and spring legs of GS Bree Moloney, and coaches to the speed and agility all game displayed by C Tamee Quinlan.

B GRADE B GRADE started off strong across the whole court, sinking the goals

FIRST TIME WINNERS: The Longwood under 15 netballers took their first success against Dookie.

by Dookie, keeping us to just three goals in the second half and allowing them to run away with a convincing win.

BOC Maddi Milne Coaches Award Kaitlyn Norris C GRADE C GRADE went out with a bare seven this week.

With ladies away and injuries, we fought hard, but it just wasn’t our day.

Goals just weren’t sinking, the defence end worked hard against a very tall shooter.

We brought on some fresh legs, thanks to the juniors that stepped up for us, and still kept fighting back, but went down 53-13.

BOC went to Michelle Groom for giving everything, coaches went to a junior girl that played her first game in C grade and moved well and shot amazing, Bella Trait.

UNDER 17 THE under 17s finally had a win and I’m so super proud of the girls, they worked hard after the third quarter the score getting closer and then in the fourth they held it together and took the win.

They had determination that I have never seen them have, and they also had composure. BOC goes to a girl that no matter what I ask her to do she does and works tirelessly every game and that’s Cassie Rawlings.

And coaches that picked up so many lose balls and was amazing back up was Amelia Kearns.

UNDER 15 THE U15s went into our game against Dookie determined to bounce back after our upsetting one goal loss to Nagambie last week.

Every single girl stepped on that court and worked extremely hard to come away with our first win of the season.

Dookie fought back hard and the girls needed to compose themselves to tidy up a number of things that

allowed Dookie to gain back momentum but our girls held it together and worked amazingly as a team to reward themselves with a three goal win.

BOC: Summah Round Coaches: Larni Shiner Encouragement award: Bella Trait UNDER 13 THIS week the under 13s came up against a tough side in Dookie whilst having a couple of girls away.

We had great defensive pressure across the entire court, and kept that throughout the entire game.

Everyone chased loose balls and got many intercepts during the game.

Our best on this week went to Madison Wilson, who chased all loose balls, had great defensive pressure and pushed her hardest throughout the game.

Our coaches award went to Marlee Galvin who chased for a lot of loose balls and had multiple intercepts, she had amazing movement around the ring whilst having a tough defender against her.
