Coronial investigation explores council’s decision prior to Nagambie accident p g

A CORONIAL investigation into the death of former AFL rookie, Jordan Barham, is looking into the Strathbogie Shire Council’s decision to defer works which would have removed potentially dangerous trees on the road where he passed away.

Mr Barham passed away in January 2022 following a car accident on Mullers Road in Nagambie.

A proposal to remove 22 trees from the road due to safety concerns had been delayed by council a month prior to Mr Barham’s death.

In a council meeting on December 14, 2021, members of the public expressed a desire to maintain the environmental value of the area and to protect its landscape and cultural identity.

Four objections were raised during the meeting, with the proposal ultimately being

deferred so that council could liaise with the community prior to making a final decision on the road works.

Director of community and planning at the shire, Amanda Tingay, recognised the objections as raising some “valid planning concerns”.

“Prior to 2015, road safety projects managed

by VicRoads saw minimal community consultation,” one objector said.

“Trees were seen as hazards to be plucked so that road widening could take place.

“There have been plans elsewhere for providing a safer road network without compromising vegetation, for example designing wider roads.”

Mindfulness course taking applications AN eight week course designed to help develop mindfulness will begin on Wednesday, June 22.

Mindfulness is a moment to moment awareness of our physical sensations, emotions and thoughts that impact so much on the day to day management of our lives.

The course introduces Formal Mindfulness (meditation) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

This is the formal practice to assist in developing the skills required for mindfulness.

This will be expanded on during sessions, developing the ability to use this skill in the management of all aspects of our lives, working on our relationship we have with ourselves and others.

The course has been running for more than 40 years and has been shown to have positive benefits in

dealing with stress, anxiety and depression.

This will be the first MBSR course offered in Euroa.

The course will involve: • an individual phone interview and ongoing individual support from your teacher; • a 2.5 hour meeting every Wednesday night over the eight weeks, plus one full retreat day; • mindfulness meditation and body awareness training; • an exploration of your own patterns and how to transform them; and • good conversations within the group about things that matter.

Plant the Mounds day at Euroa Arboretum brings variety of vegetation THE Euroa Arboretum held an outdoor event recently, which resulted in 750 plants being planted by a large crew of volunteers.

The ‘Plant the Mounds’ day was held with volunteers gathering at the arboretum to

help create a garden that will grow for years to come.

Ruby and berry saltbush, Einada hastata and Einada nutens were part of the 750 plants that were planted.

They are all tough saltbush plants that will be ground

hugging and have a patchwork effect over the mounds as they grow.

They require minimal water to look great, so these plants aim to be a good feature for a climate ready garden.

Euroa Arboretum was

thankful to all the volunteers that assisted with the gardening, particularly many of the new faces.

Those who attended were treated to a barbecue lunch and activities were provided for any kids who joined in on the day.

On Tuesday 5th April 2022, Quality Assessor’s from the Aged Care Quality & Safety Commission arrived unannounced for a visit as part of the 3 year accreditation program which had been delayed for 14 months as a result of national COVID related cancellations of site visitation.

Heavy Metal Art hosting open day in Longwood

Their most recent sculpture is a six-metre wedge-tailed eagle that is sure to catch the eye of any visitors.

The artists both discussed their intent to showcase their art to the wider community, in addition to encouraging council to see the importance of art to the area.

“We want to get as many people as possible to see the work we’ve been doing and to check out the workshop,” Mr Tobin said.

LOCAL artists Steve Tobin and Tank will be hosting an open day in Longwood to showcase their recent sculptures to the public.

The open day will be held on Sunday, April 24 at the Heavy Metal Art workshop at 49 Puddy Lane in Longwood.

The event will run from 12pm2pm with anyone welcome to see the work that Mr Tobin and Tank have been doing.

The artists were responsible for the popular blue wren located near the Seven Creeks in Euroa

“Long-term we are interested in encouraging and showcasing art within the community and to get other artists involved too.

“We will be inviting the council to the event too so they can see how the much art can mean to the community.”

Community engagement is an important part of the work being done by Mr Tobin and Tank and they are planning on creating a documentary to raise more awareness about art within the region.

“The support from the Euroa Community Action Group, the Chamber of Commerce and Kobe Pallis (arts and culture officer for the Strathbogie Shire Council) has been excellent.”

The creation of a Murray River bird trail is underway with many sculptures being sent to Danny Thomas at Ulupna Island Station, a big supporter of Tank and Tobin.

There are hopes that something similar could arrive in the Strathbogie Shire too.

By GUS RIDDER INDEPENDENT Federal Member for Indi, Helen Haines, has announced plans for a new fund that would deliver $2 billion into critical infrastructure projects to unlock new housing supply in regional Australia.

“It’s plain as day that Indi is facing a massive housing crisis right now,” Dr Haines said.

“I’ve lived here 35 years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Dr Haines stated that housing prices are up 40 per cent in Euroa over the last two years.

“This is just out of control,” she said.

“It’s the same with rent, prices are going up in every part of Indi.

“I met one person who applied for 170 rentals in Wodonga before she found a place.”

According to Dr Haines, unlocking more housing supply in regional Victoria is held back by constraints on infrastructure such as water, sewerage, roads, and electricity infrastructure.

“Cost of living is a major issue in Indi at this election and housing is a huge part of that,” she said.

“We need to unlock supply and my plan would help increase the number of blocks available.

“With people flocking to our region, we need to build more houses.

“Both major parties have announced policies that will increase demand for existing

Haines is proposing the establishment of a new $2 billion Regional Housing Infrastructure Fund that provides direct funding to regional councils to build essential infrastructure that will enable more housing to be built in their towns.

“My proposal puts money on the table so we can get on and build the roads, streetlights, electricity poles, community centres, gardens, sewerage systems, and childcare centres to open new areas as soon as possible,” she said.

Haines said her proposal would also give regional councils greater freedom on how they can invest.

“Right now, if a council wanted to build a childcare centre, or a library, or a public square, in order to meet population growth, the Government’s fund would turn them away,” she said.

“I think our local communities know best what we need to keep our towns growing.

“We all know how great it is to live out here in the regions, that’s why we stay.

Cut pensioners an income break

By STEVE KELLY THE Coalition Government will keep “an open mind” about cutting income tax rates for old age pensioners who want to work, an initiative voiced by the National Seniors Association to address the country’s chronic labour shortage.

Liberal Indi candidate Ross Lyman and Senator Jane Hume were on the campaign trail in Wangaratta yesterday spruiking the Coalition’s nous when it comes to good financial and business acumen.

Labour shortages was one of the issues discussed and Ms Hume said they would “keep an open mind about” cutting income taxes for old age pensioners.

“We do recognise that senior Australians still have a lot to contribute to the workforce and that’s why you can work a couple of days now without it affecting your pension,” she said.

“I know that some of the seniors associations are pushing for that to be expanded and that’s something we should keep an open mind about because we want to make sure all parts of the economy can contribute, whether it be senior Australians, women and young people.

“There are still 563,000 Australians who are unemployed

and we want to make sure that we give them every opportunity to get into the workforce and make that contribution as well.”

Ms Hume noted the $250 one-off payment for pensioners and health care card holders in the 2022/23 budget, the income tax cut for those earning less than $126,000, and fuel excise reduction as the three key elements to address the high cost of living.

Strong financial management has long been a card played by the Coalition and Mr Lyman wasn’t shying away from noting that his strong leadership and business skills will serve the Indi electorate well if he’s voted in by constituents at the May 21 election.

Mr Lyman is campaigning on four key pillars he believes will build Indi’s future including infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and trade and tourism.

He agreed that the labour shortages are holding businesses back and it’s one of the issues he wants to address.

“Even though unemployment is low, we’ve got businesses screaming out for staff,” he said.

“I think it’s about being able to reduce red tape, look at the visa processes and understand exactly what type of skills we need to support that migrant labour in Australia.”

Mr Lyman also believes the ‘no jab, no job’ mandate needs to go because there are people sitting at home that could otherwise be at work.

“We hit that herd immunity threshold months ago and we’re up around 97 per cent vaccination rate and I think there is a big cohort of skilled, professional people sitting at home that I think otherwise could be in employment,” he said.

Mr Lyman says if a Coalition Government is re-elected and he is the member for Indi he will be able to advocate for far more impactful change for Indi than the independent MPs have since 2013.

“What I bring is that military experience, front line leadership experience, as well as the business expertise,” he said.

“To me it’s a holistic approach around infrastructure investment, manufacturing, agriculture, and trade and tourism, and by growing the economy we can then deliver the essential services we need.”

Mr Lyman and Ms Hume spent yesterday visiting Brown Brothers Winery to understand the issues the industry is facing, before heading to Eildon and Wodonga today, along with visits to defence manufacturing sites tomorrow.

“The council has announced a climate emergency and to reverse climate damage we need trees,” said another objector.

A further objection to the proposal stated that there should have been another option provided that maintained the trees and vegetation while still looking to increase the safety of the road.

“A speed limit is something that we could introduce instead, along with adding guard rails,” they said.

“Why has there been no alternative assessment or proposal that re-engineers the road, protecting native vegetation and reducing the speed limit to 80kph?”

Plans are now underway to establish minor safety upgrades to Mullers Road.

THE Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal has raised over $22 million dollars, with more than $2.5 million being raised in regional and rural Victoria.

The total tally was $22,328,154 with the regional fundraising total being $2,581,661.

Rebecca Cowan, executive director of the Good Friday Appeal, was extremely pleased with the regional contribution.

“Year after year, regional Victoria continues to be one of the biggest supporters of the Appeal,” she said.

“Without our regional communities the Appeal simply wouldn’t be what it is today.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone for their generous donations to this year’s Good Friday Appeal.

“The team work that binds all regional towns together is truly inspiring.”

Towns in the Strathbogie Shire were particularly involved with the fundraising, largely in part to the efforts of local Country Fire Authority (CFA) branches.

Avenel raised $3448, Euroa $13,868, Nagambie $17,323, Ruffy $3441 and Violet Town raised $5000.

The CFA raised a total of $1,440,225 across Victoria for the

appeal this year.

Acting Chief Officer Luke Rohan was proud of the CFA’s efforts across the state.

“It was an honour to present the cheque to the Royal Children’s Hospital on behalf of the dedicated CFA members right across Victoria,” he said.

“CFA members already give up their time to protect the lives of Victorians through their brigades, and it’s a credit to their communitymindedness that they also take time out to fundraise for such a great cause.

“Congratulations to all our CFA volunteers involved, it was an amazing effort and you and your communities should be proud.

“It’s an honour that CFA continues to contribute in providing world-class care to our kids.

“It was also encouraging to see many members returning to fundraising in-person by collecting at their stations, intersections and on local shopping strips.

“CFA is proud to have again thrown our support behind the Good Friday Appeal and we hope to continue raising money every year for the Royal Children’s Hospital.”

Plan to boost tourism and local economies INDI independent federal MP Helen Haines wants $250m allocated each year for a Regional Tourism Fund to support infrastructure projects that increase visitation rates and grow longterm local jobs in the tourism, accommodation, and hospitality sectors.

Dr Haines said she will fight for the fund, if reelected, to strengthen the local economy, capture the domestic tourism spike, and build on the increasingly positive outlook from local operators and investors alike.

She said the North East tourism sector accounts for over 20 per cent of gross regional product and 25 per cent of employment, with thousands of local jobs and businesses relying on a strong local tourism economy.

“The Regional Tourism Fund will back in our small businesses by investing in the future of our regions,” she said.

“For instance, the Prosecco Road Development (in the King Valley) is projected to create 1117 jobs over a 10 year period.

“There are dozens of projects like this in the pipeline across Indi.

“This investment also needs to include supporting infrastructure like upgrades to the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road.

Dr Haines said the last few years of first bushfires then the pandemic had been tough for the tourism, hospitality and accommodation businesses, and while recovery was underway, infrastructure investment was needed to make up for the

widespread loss in revenue.

“In the first half of 2020, North East Victoria lost 1.6 million local tourism visitors...that’s 95 per cent of business as usual,” she said.

Dr Haines said while she had successfully lobbied for more than $10 million in tourism projects across Indi, dozens more projects “are going wanting from a failure by the Morrison Government to realise the economic potential of tourism infrastructure and invest to unlock hundreds of jobs for Indi residents”.

Towns prepare for Anzac Day services across shire

By GUS RIDDER WITH Anzac Day approaching, many of the RSLs in the region are preparing for the big day.

Euroa will be holding two services on Monday, April 25.

The first will be the dawn service at 6am, followed by a breakfast supplied by the Rotary club.

There will be a second service after a 10am march from the top of Binney Street for those who cannot make the dawn service.

Uniformed soldiers and a guest speaker will be in attendance.

Euroa RSL president Phil Munt said he was hopeful of a good turnout and clear skies for the services.

“We expect about 250-300 people to attend the first service and around 100 or so for the second,” he said.

“I’ve had a look at the forecast so hopefully there is no rain.”

In Violet Town, their RSL will begin proceedings at 6am with a dawn service too.

This will be followed by a

vice to raise the flag and lay wreaths at the RSL Cenotaph at Jubliee Park at 11am.

OneWorld to hold Afghanistan auction THE OneWorld non-profit emporium at 52-54 Binney Street is holding another fundraiser before taking a well-earned break.

OneWorld coordinator, Ruth Fluhr, discussed the fundraising that had gone on during the past year and their plans for another charity event.

“Once again, we’ve had a terrific response from the public to our fund-raising efforts,” she said.

“We thank Euroa residents and visitors to the area for their generosity.

“Our focus this time around has been the plight of the Afghan people.

“The brutal takeover by the Taliban has resulted in the displacement of millions of Afghans, dire poverty, the re-subjugation of women and girls, and the complete collapse of civil society in Afghanistan.”

To help tackle this issue, OneWorld will be running an auction on Friday, April 29 at 6pm.

They will be auctioning some of their remaining stock at the store and plan to make a party of it.

Wine, cheese, and delicious finger food will be available.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT AFGHANISTAN: The OneWorld shop on Binney Street will be holding a fundraiser for Afghanistan.

After Ned Kelly and his gang ambushed and murdered three policemen at Stringybark Creek near Mansfield, they became the targets of the most expensive manhunt in Australian history.

Aided and abetted (and feared) by locals who hid and fed them, the Kelly Gang remained at large.

Senior police, soldiers, informers, undercover agents and individuals hoping to cash in on rewards became increasingly frustrated by the failure of their efforts.

Eventually the authorities imported six young Aboriginal trackers from North Queensland to capture or kill the Kelly Gang.

Led by an Irishman

named Stanhope O’Connor, the Native Police contingent (according to local press reports) had just massacred 28 Aboriginal men as punishment for wounding two white men in a shower of spears.

This reputation, coupled with an £8000 reward, led to 16 months of intensified Kelly hunting.

These men were poorly paid, looked on as outsiders (blacktrackers) and, with the majority from North Queensland, were initially unused to the rugged terrain and freezing weather conditions encountered in North East Victoria.

Well researched and written, Mr Keiza’s The Kelly Hunters cements his reputation as one of Australia’s best writers with the ability to bring to life little known characters of the Kelly legend.

Influx of tourists in Euroa for the Easter weekend

By GUS RIDDER THERE was an abundance of visitors to Euroa over the long-weekend, leaving accommodation fully booked and long lines outside of cafes and bakeries.

As a popular weekend destination, it was no surprise that Euroa saw a high volume of tourists for the Easter break.

John Teasdale from The Euroa Motor Inn was very pleased with the influx of visitors.

“It’s absolutely great,” he said.

“It’s not just been this weekend either, all of March we were extremely busy too.

“Out of 372 possible bookings for the month, 365 of them were booked.

“For the Easter weekend we were fully booked, it was a very good weekend.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by those at the Euroa Caravan Park.

“We were extremely busy,” a representative from the Caravan park said.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Japanese Encephalitis forum held online

JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS DISCUSSION: An online forum was held by the Department of Health and Agriculture Victoria to provide information on the spread of the virus.

THE Department of Health and Agriculture Victoria hosted an online community forum about the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus recently.

The discussion covered a range of topics relating to the transmission and impact of JE and the ways the department and Agriculture Victoria are responding to the outbreak, regions impacted by the virus and ways they can prevent the spread of the virus.

A portion of the event was set aside for Q&As, which were answered by representatives from the department and Agriculture Victoria.

Agriculture Victoria continues to work closely with

both the pig and horse industries in response to the virus.

As of April 12, there were a total of 21 properties with pigs confirmed with JE in Victoria.

These are located across the Wangaratta, Moira, Greater Shepparton, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Loddon, Greater Bendigo and Northern Grampians local government areas.

A number of suspected cases remain under investigation.

The detections are the result of national surveillance efforts to identify new cases and determine the source, extent and spread of the disease.

Japanese encephalitis has

also been confirmed in piggeries in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and in a small number of feral pigs in the Northern Territory.

Agriculture Victoria is working closely with industry, conducting surveillance activities and providing advice and information to farmers, livestock and horse owners.

Infection is not spread directly from pigs to people, and there is no risk to humans from eating pig meat.

Only infected mosquitoes can spread infection.

Victorians are being reminded to protect themselves from mosquito bites particularly when spending time outdoors.

Webinars to help Victorian farmers with succession planning ACCORDING to Agriculture Victoria, the rising price of agricultural land has made succession planning more important than ever.

Agriculture business consultant Paul Blackshaw said the rise in farm values has increased interest in the family farm, in particular from family members who now see the increasing value of farm assets.

“Dividing the farm so that everyone gets what they need is becoming increasingly challenging,” Mr Blackshaw said.

“Even when families have planned well and invested offfarm or in shares to provide for non-farming members of the family, these assets haven’t increased in value as much as the farm.”

Agriculture Victoria is presenting a series of three one-hour webinar workshops presented

by Mr Blackshaw along

with succession planning specialist Mike Stephens to support families while they navigate the succession planning process.

The webinar workshop series address the issues involved in a succession plan and take participants through the steps required.

“Communication is really important,” Mr Blackshaw said.

“The task here is to keep everyone talking for the best chance of resolving the issues so everyone can live with the decision.

“At one end of the spectrum is to give everything to the farming children and nothing to everyone else, and at the other is to split everything evenly.

“Families need to find where they sit on this spectrum.”

The workshop series is free and available for 20 people.

Platform to help improve grape price transparency THE Australian grape and wine sector has secured a $989,000 grant from the Federal Government to build an online wine grape price indicator platform designed to improve market transparency and inform business decisionmaking.

A consortium comprising Australian Grape & Wine, the Inland Wine Regions Alliance and Wine Australia secured the funding through the Federal Government’s Improving Market Transparency in Perishable Agricultural Good Industries initiative, and will jointly oversee the project, with Wine Australia as the lead agency.

Once developed, the platform will give wine grape growers access to timely and accurate pricing information so they can better understand the market and make more informed decisions.

Nagambie healthcare extensions progressing well

By DIANE GRANT THE Gazette caught up with Nagambie Healthcare’s (NHC) chief executive officer Bronwyn Beadle last week, who is excited that the NHC’s future is looking bright with the progress being made on stage three of the renovations which began in March 2020.

Stage 3 has commenced which includes new kitchen facilities, new staff dining room and amenities, and three more hospital rooms.

“The hospital extension progressed well with the first stage completed and the second stage of completion from April 2020,” Ms Beadle said.

Completion of the first stage provided the hospital with six large single hospital rooms with ensuites, overhead lifting equipment and palliative care area.

The beds are now occupied by those in need of them.

The second stage of the hospital extension also progressed to include a new front entrance, refurbished office space and meeting rooms suitable for consultations, telehealth access and privacy areas.

In September last year, Ms Beadle informed the public of the progress being made.

“The total build budget is $1.2m and despite application

In mid-December, Minister for Health Martin Foley announced that 76 health services shared in $160 million in funding.

“The funding will ensure hospitals across the state can continue doing what they do best - saving lives,” he said.

Bush poet Rhonda wins championship again AUSTRALIAN bush poet Rhonda Tallnash from Violet Town won the Victorian Bush Poetry Female Open Championship in Corryong recently.

This is the fourth time she has held the title.

The competition was part of The Man from Snowy River Festival which was in full swing after a few uncertain years due to COVID-19.

The championship is judged over four sections with the winner being required to achieve the highest aggregate points for performances in a classical poem, modern poem and an original serious and humorous poem.

Ms Tallnash was awarded two firsts, one second and one third for her poems.

poetry enthusiasts came from interstate to enjoy the love of this uniquely Australian craft and the camaraderie.

Ms Tallnash was also crowned Victorian Championship Yarnspinner for 2022 after being the only women in the section and defeating nine men.

Her yarn entitled ‘Mum’s Outing’ was a humorous ‘true’ story about retrieving Mum’s forgot-

ten purse from an aged care facility after leaving Mum in a local coffee shop.

Ms Tallnash also performs at the Tamworth and Mildura Country Music Festivals and is passionate about this wonderful art continuing in the future for the benefit of younger generations.

The meeting will begin at 6.30pm at the Balmattum Fire Station.

Roads closed for cycling event THERE will be some road closures due to the Euroa Town Cycling Criterium on Saturday, April 23.

The race is conducted on a 1.4 Km circuit of the Euroa town centre, meaning that some popular streets will not be accessible during the event.

Between 12pm and 6pm on Saturday, April 23 there will be road closures in Euroa on Kirkland Avenue, Railway Street, Binney Street and Bury Street.

There will be additional signage indicating the roads have been closed.

District News Longwood Lookout

By Longwood Action Group The next meeting of the Longwood Action Group will be Wednesday, May 4 at 7pm with the location to be advised - all welcome.

The annual Longwood Anzac Day Service will commence at 9am and community groups and citizens are asked to meet at the primary school, Hurley Street by 8.45am to march to the Boer Memorial for the service.

The Longwood Action Group wish to acknowledge the passing on April 17th of their dear friend and supporter Chris “Narra” Lalor.

Narra moved to Longwood several years ago from Coburg.

Already having many friends here, it was a great place for him to retire to and he embraced his life in Longwood.

Being a Coburg Football Club life member, he was instrumental in bringing the club to Longwood for their intra-club match for the past two years.

He loved to pop down to our action group BBQ’s after working bees to have a snag and a beer.

He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be missed greatly and

HAVING a holiday just got easier for older Victorians with a further 10,000 vouchers awarded as part of the popular Seniors Travel Voucher scheme.

The vouchers will be distributed to eligible seniors who have previously applied through the ballot – creating more opportunities to travel and enjoy all Victoria has to offer.

The Victorian and Seniors Travel Voucher Scheme provides vouchers to encourage people to travel around Victoria.

The eligible travel period for the vouchers commenced on April 8, and will run through until Friday, 27 May. Vouchers can be used for accommodation, tours and experiences across the state.

Previous rounds of the Travel Voucher Scheme generated significant economic benefits, with more than $159 million already spent on travel and activities in Victoria.

The $60 million Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program allows Victorians to claim 25 per cent rebates when they spend at least $40 on entertainment any day of the week, anywhere in the state.

The rebate can also be claimed for meals from Monday to Thursday anywhere in Victoria except the City of Melbourne municipality.

Labor to maintain the rage on disasters ANTHONY Albanese will seek to highlight Scott Morrison’s inaction on disaster response as the second week of the election campaign continues.

The opposition leader will remain in marginal Queensland seats, areas where Labor will need to make up ground if it wants any chance of forming government.

Meanwhile, Scott Morrison will continue to campaign in crucial marginal seats in Western Australia.

Mr Albanese will use the

ninth day of the campaign to spruik a $38 million funding pledge over three years to Disaster Relief Australia, a veteran-led organisation assisting communities after natural disasters.

The funding would allow for the organisation to have 5200 more volunteers join the ranks, along with helping to cover recruitment, training and equipment.

The announcement comes off the back of the opposition leader attacking the prime minister for his handling of the Black Summer

bushfires and the recent floods in Queensland and northern NSW. Defence Minister Peter Dutton rejected claims Queensland flood victims were receiving less income support than residents of Lismore in northern NSW. Mr Morrison will spend the day in WA spruiking the government’s economic management, including an address the Chamber of Minerals and Energy.

The West Australian reports the prime minister will pledge $200 million for four

new hydrogen hubs in WA and $50 million for mineral supply chain jobs.

“Australia is one of the world’s great resource nations,” he is expected to say.

“Here in WA, generations of visionaries have built one of the world’s most advanced, successful resource sectors. This is an enormous source of strength, prosperity and security that all Australians have benefited from over many decades.

“Our government has a plan for an even stronger resources sector.

“Now is not the time to risk our $2.1 trillion economy with someone who doesn’t understand our economy.”

The prime minister also remains under pressure to dump controversial Liberal Warringah candidate Katherine Deves ahead of the Thursday cutoff for electoral candidates to put their hands up.

Kerr and Bull claim Stawell Gift victories HARRISON Kerr has clocked the fastest winning time in 27 years to claim a dominant victory in the Stawell Gift.

The red-hot Victorian justified his pre-race favouritism by dominating the final on a cold Easter Monday at Central Park.

Racing off a mark of 9.25m, Kerr stormed to victory in 11.85 seconds, the fastest winning time in the celebrated 120m handicap event since Glenn Crawford (11.79) in 1995.

The women’s Stawell Gift was a much closer affair, with Queenslander Carla Bull (6m) prevailing in a photo finish in 13.77 from

Clare De Salis and backmarker Mia Gross.

The 22-year-old Kerr has been a regular fixture at Stawell for the past eight years, but it has only been recently that he has truly believed he was ready to challenge for major honours.

“I’ve had family members compete here and my brother lives locally so I’ve been up and down (to Stawell) a few times,” the final-year engineering student said. “(Until now) I just wasn’t ready, I wasn’t going to be able to run those sort of times.

“I just needed the right prep to

set up for it.”

That preparation hit a major hurdle in May last year when Kerr injured his shoulder in a suburban Australian Rules football match and was forced to undergo reconstructive surgery.

“I had to have two months off running from that, so I was stuck in the gym doing bikes and core sessions and all the terrible stuff,” he said.

“I knew I had time but I had to do everything right.”

Calls to ease COVID-19 isolation rules BUSINESS groups are calling for the easing of the seven-day isolation requirement for household contacts of people with COVID-19.

Business NSW and the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry say the rules should be relaxed to ease staffing shortages, wanting those deemed close contacts to be allowed to work and undergo daily rapid antigen tests instead.

Business NSW chief executive Daniel Hunter said with such high vaccina-

tion rates, Australians have demonstrated a capacity to live and work with the virus.

“The current isolation rules are providing a barrier to businesses as healthy people are forced to isolate unnecessarily,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

With NSW and Victorian airport workers now exempt from household contact rules, there was an “inconsistency and unfairness”.

“This needs to be fixed so that all businesses can have

fair access to workers,” he said.

“Business needs certainty and we know that they are already struggling with supply chain issues and staff shortages.”

Victorian Chamber Chief Executive Paul Guerra said staff shortages continued to hamper business.

“We need to release the handbrake and enable businesses to operate at the maximum capacity possible and lead our economic recovery,” he said.

Rate rise hints sought in RBA minutes ECONOMISTS will be scouring the minutes of the Reserve Bank board’s most recent meeting for hints on whether interest rates could rise soon.

The minutes of the RBA board’s April monetary policy meeting will be released at 11.30am.

NAB’s Tapas Strickland said the minutes would be scrutinised for any hints on whether the RBA could contemplate starting its hiking cycle as early as May. “Guidance from the post-

meeting statement hinted rate hikes from June with the board waiting for ‘important additional evidence ... on both inflation and the evolution of labour costs’,” he said.

The latest inflation data will be released on April 27.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Fremantle on Monday cost of living pressures were “real”, but were having a far greater impact in other countries than Australia.

“The Reserve Bank of

Australia sets independently the cash rate in this country,” he told reporters when asked whether he thought the cash rate would go above one per cent.

“A strong economy that is backed in by a well-managed budget, that’s what puts downward pressure on interest rates.”

The last rise in the cash rate was in November 2010.

The Australian Bureau off Statistics released household spending figures on Tuesday.

Conditions were ideal for good scoring ,the winner on a two way countback after twelve holes was Greg Roberts with 35 points, runner up was Allan Rowarth, Grant Pearce won nearest the pin on the eighth.

It was good to see his wife Ria out playing nine holes following her lay off

due to an injury.

Work was done on the greens in readiness for the forthcoming VVGA Carnival at the Club commencing on Sunday, May 1 through to Tuesday May 3.

Stableford was the game on Saturday April 16 under the direction of Chris Bennett, the scribe played with two ladies who will remain nameless.

He found during the round he was being out driven, consequently was the butt of a great amount off banter but we had a great

deal of fun and he came out on top.

There was a three way count back in the men’s division with Gary Hewlett winning with 38 points.

Winner of the ladies was Shirley Dash with 36 points, lineballs were won by John Chaponnel and Peter Plillips both with 38 points, Ryley Mc Donald 37 points and a visitor from Lang Lang Rob Bride with 36 points.

Nearest the pins on the 4th Peter Phillips who missed his birdie, 8th was won by David Kennett, 15th

John Moore, and 17th Jeremy Kennett.

Ladies drive and pitch to Kerry Hewlett , men’s was won by Chris Bennett, straightest drive by perhaps an inch went to Beat Van der Schour.

Golf next Saturday April 23 is Stableford , the first round of the Wally Dunn Trophy with Mr President himself looking after proceedings.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB EASTER Sunday was a par event at the Nagambie golf club with 30 players enjoying plenty of sunshine across

the extended weekend.

The course was busy with green fee players as well as visitors from Ranfurlie joining the competition.

The winning score for the day was Troy Clonan with a season best so far +7, Troy put together a faultless round of golf that will most likely make it onto the best card of the year board for par.

Runner up was everyone’s favourite Alan ‘Angry’ Anderson having a day out and showing some form with a few big events just around

the corner Anderson finished +4, third went to Alby Seenan with a gritty +3 and Greg Whiteman completed his best round in some time with a red hot closing six holes for +2.

The nearest the pin prizes were hard to get with only two of four achieved, Alby Seenan smashing his way onto the third and Greg Whiteman going oh so close on the 13th.

Next week’s golf will be a stableford event with B. Leviston on office duty and M. Mensfeld in the bar.

ON a very pleasant autumn afternoon 31 bowlers came to the club to take part in bowls to support the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

All proceeds of the day, green fees, raffle, and more was donated, helping the club to raise over $800 for the Good Friday Appeal.

A ditch to ditch was held before play and this was won by Dot Lomer and Brian Diffey.

Easter goodies were the prizes for the raffle and lucky winners were Ray Day, Raelene, Dot Lomer, Anne Sutcliffe, Len Fischer, Sandra Cocking, Ken Sutcliffe, Ken Drysdale.

Players enjoyed hot cross buns for afternoon tea to conclude a successful day.

Social bowls winners last Wednesday were R Noble, K Boyce, R Day. Saturday, April 16 18 players came to the club for social bowls and winners were J Greasley, G Blatchford.

Social bowls will continue today, Wednesday, and again on Saturday.

Next Monday, Anzac Day is the official finishing day on the bowls calendar of the Euroa Bowls Club and the play will start at 1pm, with names on the board in the clubhouse or phone through before 12.30pm on the day.

Veteran golfers prepare to take on Strathbogie golf course MONDAY, April 11 saw 89 golfers journey to the Valley View Golf Club for the latest Goulburn Valley Veterans Competition.

It was great to see how much work had been done by this fully volunteer group and the facilities are looking great.

The course was in great condition, although surprisingly the golfers failed to set the course alight. Pooch had everyone assembled early for the day.

Smiling faces and a lot of banter was happening as the vets headed off to their re-

spective starting holes.

It is obvious that the vets love the opportunity to catch up with old mates.

The weather was cool with some wind and as the scores came back in it was evident that the course had been successful.

In A grade the winner was Daryl Sheridan from Numurkah who beat Kevin Humbert from Lockington on countback, both on 33 points.

Balls down the line were Kelly Cheong, David Trickey, Michael McAuliffe, John Radeski, Peter Oddy, Mr Reliable - Bill Padgett, Tom McCo-

nchie, Peter Barrette and Neil Hutchins.

In B grade it was Alan Hausler who was best, with the home ground advantage.

His score of 34 was followed by George Traianidis on 32 points.

Down the line we had Gary Hopcraft, Phil Steers, the legendary Bob Dixon, Mick Stevens, Harold Rayner, Jeff Carnie, Robert Smith, Brian Reiners, Ross Chandler, Robert Oliver, Ray Gouley and John Neale.

The best score of the day came from C grade champ Robert Coleman from Park-

lands.

He was seen leaving the building giving Ray Coleman tips on how to play golf.

Ray in defence was utilising the fact his handicap is much lower, hopefully they are at our next event to continue the battle.

Robert scored 37 points and was followed home by Ian Scurrah from Lockington on 35 points.

Balls went to Geoff Squires, Dudley Bryant, Maurice Webb and Cyril Cunningham.

The nearest the pins winners on the 3rd were Bob Wildes (Hilltop) in A grade,

Ross Chandler (from Maryborough) for B grade and Mr Likeable, Dudley Bryant from Numurkah in C grade.

Today we missed the award winning comedian, Ron Wilkinson, who is struggling with his health at the moment; we look forward to his next joke, think?

With Rolf Webber and Ron in the recovery ward we had to bring Scotty out from retirement to make the speeches.

We have the upcoming Intra-zone at Strathbogie against other vets groups so we need to be in prime condi-

tion for that one.

Mansfield monthly clay target shoot draws large crowd THE Mansfield Clay Target Club monthly shoot was held on Sunday in calm and sunny conditions.

Some 30 competitors from other clubs included representation from Euroa, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Alexandra, Woods Point, Cosgrove, Bendigo and Loddon District, making up five squads.

Today was the annual Anzac Memorial shoot, generously sponsored by David Kirley of DK Roofing and Cladding.

Four events were on the fixture with 100 targets for the day; the first five target point score eye opener, 25 target Double Barrel, 30 target continental double barrel and 40 target ball trap.

All events contributed to an overall high gun award.

The eye opener event resulted in nine shooters hitting all targets first barrel for a score of 15.

AA grade - Mick Ward (Alexandra), A grade - Marty McLachlan (Mansfield) and Peter Watkins (Cosgrove), B grade - Jason Foster (Mansfield), Bob Glossip (Yarrawonga), Al Kidd (Mansfield), and Darren Clarke (Mansfield). C grade - Geoff Foster (Mansfield) and Ian Larner (Alexandra).

It was straight into the double barrel cash divide with some outstanding shooting, seven shooters

Two competitors shot 28 in A grade, after a shoot off Mingo Diaz won with 34/36 over Anthony Kirley 33/36.

B grade was also determined by a shoot off with Al Kidd 29/31 and Bob Glossip 28/30.

Visiting for the first time from Loddon District Greg Murphy won

C grade 28 from local Phil McDonough 26.

All shooters adjourned for a roast chicken and salad lunch before tackling the challenging last event, 40 target Ball Trap.

Similar to continental with random targets both vertically and horizontally but at wider angles and faster pace.

Fred Heinze took out overall breaking 38 targets.

AA grade was won by Mick Ward

37/41 and Al Kidd 36/41.

A grade first was Fred Heinze 38 and Mingo Diaz 37.

B grade - Bob Glossip 32 and Darren Clarke 31.

C grade - Greg Murphy 36 and Ken Skinner 33.

After all events were run and won two competitors came in only missing five targets for the day.

A shoot off involving five ball trap targets was shot by Mingo Diaz and Fred Heinze with Mingo victorious.

Special thanks to attending shooters and family members who participated with scoring and generally helping out to ensure a successful day.

Mansfield Clay Target Gun hosts the North East Zone shoot the third Sunday of each month and the next competition will be shot May 15 at 10.30am.

Magpies win another close one GVFL - EUROA RESERVES FOOTBALL

By TONY BRODIE TRAVELLING to Echuca, most Euroa supporters were of the thinking that our team would have to put up a strong effort to get near the opposition who have been undefeated for a long period of time.

To their credit our reserves team not only matched the opposition but were able to come away with the four points.

The inclusion of JD Hayes into the team was a big in and his effect on the game went a long way in the winning of the contest.

As the game opened our reserves team were able to hit the score board quickly with two goals placing some pressure on the opposition.

Through this opening it gave confidence to our team which continued during the game.

When the Echuca team hit the scoreboard, Euroa were able to match them and for a high percentage of the game and subsequently able to hold a lead.

There were many pleasing elements to the win with many positional changes completed during the game where we had to move players around to combat the big bodies of the Echuca team.

The third quarter was a good one for the team with Jarmyn Tremellen being a live wire and our midfield matching the Echuca midfield.

By NICK McCABE Nick McCabe A PICTURESQUE Saturday morning saw an undermanned Euroa thirds line up make the gruelling trek to Echuca’s Victoria Park, coming up against the premiership favourite Murray Bombers.

The group knew this was going to be no easy feat.

However, bolstered by the inclusion of three Echuca players and u16 prospects Will Smyth, Blake Hepworth and Dublin Anderson the Euroa boys re-

mained optimistic.

Coach Hill’s pre-game message to the boys was to play their brand of attacking footy through the corridor using the narrow dimensions of Victoria Park to their advantage.

The first quarter began as a tight congested contest with the morning dew making playing conditions slippery. Fletcher Paul found plenty of the footy across half back whilst Heath Downie was prevailing in the ruck giving the Euroa midfielders first use of the footy.

As the game progressed, the well-oiled Murray Bombers run and carry with ball in hand gradually became too much for the Euroa boys to counter which resulted in a 90-point Echuca lead at half time.

Captain Keily Jager was instrumental at the coal face winning contested ball on repeat, setting the standard throughout the entire day.

Ned Ivill tried his heart

out all day laying important goal saving tackles and smothers all game.

The reinvented Nic Hill at half back competed hard all day with his excellent ball use on full display.

In the end Echuca proved to fit for a very undermanned Euroa line up that fought hard all day with the eventual margin blowing out to 175 points.

With the likelihood of several key inclusions to be added to the Anzac Day team, the Euroa boys now look forward to showing a strong response and claiming bragging rights against archrivals Seymour.

the dew’ off the grass for their first game for 2022.

Coach Matthew Mills said this team has come together very nicely in the ‘off-season’ with a larger group of boys committing to play with this team in 2022 than anticipated late last year.

So much so that despite missing five players due to their final under 16 Murray Bushranger commitments this team took to the field with a full side on the ground and spares on the bench.

Echuca were quite dominant throughout the game however - this was a wonderful learning experience for these young Magpies as they listened intently to Coach Mills’ instructions at each of the breaks.

Assistant Coach Jason Wilson gave a great deal of positive feedback to the boys whilst Runner Bo Harrison was also able to use his years of experience to benefit these players as he delivered messages throughout the day - the club is fortunate to have these people involved.

Sam Leigh was brilliant throughout the day, never giving an inch.

He was superbly aided by the likes of Baxter Fraser, Nathan Butler, Dublin Anderson and Archy Harrison.

The boys are looking to welcome back their Bushranger reps next week as they take on Seymour this Sunday at 9am.

Cycling criterium back in Euroa town by popular demand THE Shepparton Cycling Club is once again running the Euroa Cycling Town Criterium in 2022.

The Euroa Rotary Club has run this event in the past and have kindly offered the opportunity to the Shepparton Cycling Club to run the Saturday afternoon town crits on Saturday, April 23 2022.

This event will attract local, state, and national competitors accompanied

by support staff to the Strathbogie Shire.

There will be over 300 competitors attending the event and will have over 500 spectators.

The Shepparton Cycling Club is a well-established sporting club which has been providing cycling to the Shepparton district for over 90 years.

The club is extremely proud to have been the starting ground for many

A tough day for Euroa netballers GVFL - EUROA B GRADE NETBALL THE Euroa B grade netball team took on the powerhouse Echuca side under picture perfect blue skies and sunshine on Saturday at Victoria Park.

Unfortunately, whilst these conditions make for perfect Easter holiday weather, they are not as conducive to a fast paced game of netball.

A slower start left the Magpies trailing at quarter time, with Echuca continuing to extend that lead by the half time break.

This turned out to be a lead Euroa could not chase down, despite the best efforts of defender Milly Treacy who was a consistent in the ring, putting pressure on the goalers and hunting the ball outside.

Milly was backed by Caitlyn Elliott, a veritable workhorse for Euroa, and together the girls created many turnovers and opportunities for the visiting side.

Demi Walker stood up in the ring as goal shooter, her first game in B grade, converting the chances she had with accuracy and poise.

However, the home side was simply too strong on the day, with Euroa going down by 20 goals.

Whilst disappointing, there were still many positives to come out of the game.

The loss also provides the Magpies with some definite areas to focus on in the coming weeks, as a tough fixture sees them tackle some of the giants of the competition over the next month.

Best players as awarded by the Coach: Milly Treacy, Caitlyn Elliott, Demi Walker Echuca 60 Euroa 32 B RESERVE NETBALL IT was a tough day at the office for the Euroa B reserve team when they met up with Echuca on Saturday.

Despite many promising passages of play, the Euroa team trailed all day, eventually losing 63-16.

Caitlin Seeber showed her diversity against the strong Echuca team swinging into centre and running out the last half, giving Euroa some fresh legs and moving the ball well.

Molly Redfern held down the goal ring, shooting very

well against the tall defenders, and joining forces with Mahony Fothergill at making great attempts to get the rebounds Euroa needed against much taller opposition.

Cathryn Gray and Mary Frewen did their best against the tall Echuca shooters, positioning themselves well for the rebounds that just weren’t coming due to the accuracy of the Murray Bomber goalers.

It was a long and hardfought game, and one where the score may not have truly been indicative of the standard of play.

It was a loss that will only help the Euroa team to improve and develop, as they meet up with some pretty tough competition over the next few weeks.

Let’s hope it is blue skies all the way, but the scorching summer-like conditions on the court this week will hopefully be tempered slightly before next Sunday’s game against traditional rivals Seymour.

Echuca 63 Euroa 16 UNDER 17 NETBALL HAVE you ever seen Pitch Perfect 2- a movie many consider to be a cinematic classic?

There is a scene when the German acapella group, Das Sound Machine, stride onto stage and amaze the crowd with their sheer perfection?

Such was the case on Saturday when the Echuca Murray Bombers U17 team took to the court.

They were very tall.

They were very tanned, and they were very, very talented.

This is not to say Euroa’s U17s were cowered by their opponents.

Quite the contrary in fact.

Laura Frewen, Millie Watson, Chloe Salter and Lily Meehan were run off their collective feet in defense, but soon learned to give as good as they got in the fast paced and bustling Echuca goal ring.

Hannah Kubeil, Meg Walker and Abby Harrison certainly earned their rest on Saturday night. All three girls found themselves in a very physical battle to find space in the mid court as they were zoned and tightly defended by bottle green wearing giants.

The sun continued to shine and Hannah, Meg and Abby continued to run- the heat not effecting their efforts to move the ball out of defense and into attack.

After only two weeks, Sienna Trotter and Molly Redfern are combining really well in the Magpie goal ring.

Sneaky passes around the incredibly long reach of their defenders were suc-

cessful, and the girls continued to shoot extremely accurately- which is just as well when rebounding is so difficult.

Utilizing Magpie players on the ring also proved effective, with the ball moved out and back in at lightning speed in an effort to find a better shooting position.

At the end of the game, it was a significant win to Echuca.

And there is no denying it, they were super impressive.

The Magpies can now put that loss behind them as they prepare for next week’s game against Seymour at Memorial Oval on Sunday.

UNDER 15 NETBALL A cracking day in Echuca greeted our 15Under team as they looked to continue their form from the win last weekend against Mansfield.

With some ‘pump up’ tunes blaring, the holiday vibe was certainly in the air, as a day on the Murray seemed like a very good idea!

Echuca were off to a flyer and in no time set about putting a decent gap on the scoreboard between themselves and their Magpie opponents.

The new goaling combination of Tess Walker and Tash Reid were presenting well, despite few opportunities to score.

Scarlett Trotter, Lily Fowler and Maggie Pittock defended superbly, although

the onslaught of attacking moves by Echuca seemed overwhelming at times.

Tash was replaced, having to leave the court with a blood nose.

This meant fresh running legs, in the form of Marnie Salter, came onto the court with Irish Anderson moving into the center, and Ruby Watson into goals.

Scarlett’s reading of the play and intercepting in defense was excellent.

As the game went on, the tempo decreased slightly with possession by the Magpies far more frequent and with greater control.

Marnie and Irish were forever applying pressure to their Echuca opponents, with some excellent supportive talk from Maggie really firing up her teammates.

The accuracy of the Echuca goalers though was quite telling as they skipped out to an unassailable lead by the main break.

The second half provided more opportunity for the likes of Issy Smith and Tash in goals, Oakley Paul helping out in defense and Ruby back into the midcourt.

Coach Kelly Hill certainly provided many opportunities for her team to experience a variety of roles throughout the match - no doubt developing wider skill sets for games to come throughout season 2022 and beyond.

Irish was back in the middle of the court in the last quarter, running everything down and providing great drive for her team and coach.

Issy and Ruby were in goals and Maggie and Oakley moved into the last line of defense, allowing Lily to stretch her legs at wing defence.

In the end the game was won by Echuca, 57 goals to 17.

Best players were Irish Anderson, Maggie Pittock, Ruby Watson.

EUROA Secondary College celebrated its sports day at the Euroa Memorial Oval recently.

The students ran, jumped bars, threw javelins, tossed discs, and ran some more, having a day full of enjoyment.

The sports day was for everyone to have fun, students, supporters and staff.

Whether you scored, measured, timed, or just cheered, everyone was involved in creating an enjoyable environment for the day.

There was not a lull in the day’s schedule of events with every part of the Euroa Memorial Oval covered in a constant stream of red, yellow and green clad students participating in one event after another.

The school’s sports day was a great success due to the students, staff and the picturesque venue.

There were also some serious efforts from the students, followed by some excellent results.

Congratulations to Kirkland, the overall house champions and Josie Reid, the overall individual champion.

The day’s champions were Ethan Saxon, Macey Watson, Jack Walters, Leila Creevey, Garry Bhour, Macey Ross, Koby Kubeil, Josie Reid, Tynan Cummins, Mille Watson, Alif Chambers, Caden Robinson and Ash Fraser.

Euroa netballers struggle in autumn heat GVFL- EUROA NETBALL A GRADE EUROA had a good start to what was going to be a tough match, playing in the heat and against one of the strongest teams in the competition.

Echuca showed poise and soon started to make the most of any opportunity, placing relentless pressure on every pass and taking them to a five goal lead at the end of the first quarter.

Euroa made some positional changes to their attack for the second term, but before Euroa could get into a rhythm, Echuca had come out strong and furthered their lead.

Catch up netball was always going to be extremely difficult with the heat and a small bench to draw from, but there were still some highlight intercepts and fine passages of play from the persistent Magpies.

The third quarter was a very competitive quarter, with all players contributing to some great defensive pressure which forced Echuca to work hard for every goal.

Senior footballers play in front of large holiday crowd GVFL - EUROA SENIOR FOOTBALL ON a remarkably hot day for the second week in April, the Magpie senior side ran out onto the ground high in anticipation of mixing it with pre-season premiership fancy Echuca on their home ground in Echuca.

Lots of sunscreen could be seen on many faces with a real holiday-like feel in the air for the large crowd in attendance.

The game began at a furious pace with the Murray Bombers pressing hard across the ground, making life very difficult for the Magpies to get the ball deep into their forward line where Tristan Davies and Erish Uthayakumar were waiting to pounce.

Andrew Smith again was giving his midfield good

use of the ball with wonderful support from Hudson Ramsden.

Back six members Nate Trotter, Ben Harrison and Jack McKernan were looking very poised despite the repeated entries by the Echuca side.

Coach Rowan delivered some considered messages throughout the longer break at half time - urging his team to stay in the contest, deliver the ball deeper into their forward line and run from behind to break the lines Echuca were so adept at controlling.

Co-Captains Jacob Gleeson and Marcus Varley did their very best to carry out the coaches instructions will wonderful support from Ben Bath, Jayden Gleeson and Ben Giobbi.

Adam Giobbi was playing a solid game in defense,

yet it was the way in which Max Gleeson stood up when asked to play off the half back line that gave the Magpies a real lift.

Despite this the visitors were not making an impact on the scoreboard with goals that were able to be scored coming from too much hard work.

On the other hand, the Echuca team seemed to be able to penetrate the Euroa resistance with greater ease, scoring freely and setting themselves up for a fine win at home.

In the last quarter, both teams were tiring from the pace of the game and the heat, but none of the girls were giving up.

Echuca were simply too strong for Euroa on this occasion.

It was a great game to watch, and with more playing time together, the Euroa team will soon be a threat to any team in the competition.

Next week will see Euroa

take on another strong team in Seymour.

This game will be played on Sunday and at Memorial Oval, and should be an excellent chance for locals to come and watch, marvel at the sporting talent, and cheer on a team that shows so much promise and potential.
