Livestock demand high HIGH demand for livestock products and ongoing industry staff shortages is causing a backlog for processors and suppliers.

Russell Mawson, branch manager at Nutrien Harcourts Euroa, said the industry had been subjected to many external elements.

“We have COVID-19 and paddocks full of grass,” he said.

“The livestock industry in the last two weeks has experienced a massive shortage of staff due to COVID-19 with many

“As a result the backlog is growing and the shortage of supply in supermarkets and butchers is leading to quotas on sale to customers, particularly Coles, even causing our local butchers to sadly have to close for a

short period.

“We are now seeing some feedlots with up to 4-6 weeks backlog.”

Mr Mawson said the demand for livestock had never been so strong and the frustration never so great.

“We see the lamb industry exceeding $8/kg and mutton around $6/kg consistently,” he said.

“The old adage of a farmer being able to handle a flood, fire and a drought

Euroa Health still outbreak site AS of January 13 Euroa Health remains a COVID-19 outbreak site, with restriction orders being closely monitored by Victorian Government, Local Public Health Unit (LPHU) based in Shepparton.

The outbreak was declared on the December 30 when a staff member tested positive to COVID-19.

This case was followed by one resident who has since recovered well, and four other staff members testing positive and isolating at home.

“Transmission of the virus at the site is minimal, clearly indicating infection control procedures and personal protective equipment at Euroa Health are working,” chief executive officer Cherree Hunter said.

Staff and residents are routinely tested for COVID-19 and rapid testing on January 12, pleasingly showed all residents were negative.

They currently await further updates from the LPHU to signal an update to our outbreak status, and we predict that carefully managed visiting will soon commence.

New Public Health Orders came into effect as of 11.59pm January 13 to provide more essential workers with an exemption from close contact home isolation requirements to attend their workplace.

Under the conditions of the exemption, the worker may return to work if it is necessary for continuity of operations and if other options have been exhausted.

The exemption will apply to attending work only, not any other settings.

In order to be eligible, the worker must first notify the employer of their status as a contact, and critically, both parties must consent to the worker returning to the workplace.

They are already required to be fully vaccinated.

Requirements include: The worker must undertake a daily rapid antigen test (RAT) for five days and return a negative result prior to attending work each day.

They must wear a face mask at all times, with excep-

tions in the case of eating or drinking, or safety reasons, and a P2/N95 respirator is preferred.

The worker cannot enter shared break areas and the employer must try and facilitate solo break time.

The employer must also take reasonable steps to deploy the worker in areas where transmission risk is lower.

If at any time the worker develops symptoms or tests positive on a RAT, the exemption no longer applies - they are a case, must isolate for seven days, and must notify others including their employer.

This exemption also currently applies to hospital workers, disability workers, residential aged care facility workers, and ambulance workers.

N95 masks are required for these workers.

The Department of Health

has also updated contact management guidelines to require workplaces to notify the department when five cases have attended the work premises within seven days.

Previously workplaces were required to advise the department and Worksafe of single cases.

Euroa Health clinical services manager Paula McPherson applauded residents and staff who have been extraordinary throughout this COVID-19 isolation, working double shifts, returning from annual leave to assist and nurses from acute supporting the aged care facility.

They have had many laughs along the way each day to keep everyone engaged.

A video recording of the Nutbush dance which has at Euroa Health was a big project undertaken by their lifestyle team and exercise physiologist teaching residents the steps to the Nutbush over an entire week.

The video has been released on social media channels and received over a thousand views overnight.

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is calling on Nagambie residents to pick the equipment for the town’s new splash park.

Council committed $1 million in funding in its 2021/22 Budget to create a splash park at Buckley Park, Nagambie.

“We’ve now engaged Wacky Water Play as the contractor to develop this fabulous facility for the Nagambie community,” Mayor Laura Binks said.

“But we want your input.

“Our goal is to create a water play area for the Nagambie and surrounding communities, so we’re asking

the community to pick the equipment.”

The splash park pad allows for nine individual pieces of equipment and there are 11 options to choose from.

Council has all the equipment listed on www.share. strathbogie.vic.gov.au and people are asked points system to show their preference.

Feedback closed at 9am on Monday, January 31.

Australia Day ambassadors and town events galore STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is organising Australia Day events in each township.

These events are open to all members of the public and will be conducted in a COVID-safe manner.

In Violet Town, there will be a 7.30am breakfast followed by a 9.30am ceremony at Violet Town Community Complex, 35 Cowslip Street.

In Avenel, there will be a 9.30am ceremony and a 12noon morning tea at Jubilee Park, Livingstone Street.

In Nagambie, for which you will have to be double vaccinated, there will be a 8am sausage sizzle and a 8.45am ceremony at Nagambie Rowing Club, 301 High Street.

He was part of the senior executive team at Carlton for over 12 years in his role as general manager of communications, managing the media and developing communications policies

and reputation initiatives for the club.

After two years as the general manager for marketing and communications for a children’s cancer charity, Mr Coutt started his own consulting business, Ian Coutts Communications.

He continues to work for several organisations, primarily in the sporting and not-for-profit sectors.

He is a co-founder and director of the Mullagh Wills Foundation which celebrates the Aboriginal Australian Cricket Team tour of England in 1868 and promotes reconciliation through sport more generally.

“The demand experienced in the Euroa saleyard sees orders coming from Gippsland to Queensland back through to South Australia with cattle going to each of these destinations.”

For local beef producer Phil Whitten, the period has been a combination of

multiple factors.

“Following a massive sell-off of cattle across the eastern states of Australia during the 2018/19 drought, the last two years have seen above average rainfall over most of the cattle regions in QLD, NSW and Victoria,” Mr Whitten said.

“This resulted in huge demand for cattle as breeders and finishers tried to rebuild their herds.

“Combined with this has been a global animal protein shortage, pushing up prices for

finished beef.”

Phil Whitten said “local cattle breeders have benefited from this price resurgence”.

“Historically, weaner calves had been selling for $800-$1200 per head,” he said.

“In 2020 weaner calves made up to $1600 per head, and in 2021 most calves over 300kg made from $1700 to $2500 per head.

“It’s great to see local cattle producers with smiles on their faces again.”

Hospitality businesses blooming in town despite hardship

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL TWO new hospitality venues have just opened in Euroa, Indian restaurant Northern Rasoi and coffee and food shop Café 56.

They have opened their doors despite uncertain times due to COVID-19 and incessant lockdowns.

Kaver Singh, one of Norther Rasoi business partners, also said it was really hard to find staff at the moment.

“We have opened Northern Rasoi on 44 Binney Street with chef Amritpal Atwal because even if the hospitality world is going through a rough time at the moment, there is always a need to feed people,” he said.

“Everyone has got to eat, so we are confident.

“COVID-19 will one day end, you can’t restrict yourself to do stuff and feed people and to keep people entertained because of it, businesswise it’ll soon be a

bad memory.

“We are not afraid and we were not afraid to open, if you want to work hard and keep working it will happen.”

Both chefs came from India in 2007 and became qualified as chefs in Australia.

They also have another restaurant in Seymour called Baba’s Kitchen.

“In Seymour, we had a lot of people coming from the Strathbogie Shire, and Northern Republic owner Adam Palmer told us we should maybe try our luck in town, so we did,” Mr Singh said.

He also said that until they found staff to work with them, he would work at the front while Mr Atwal would work in the kitchen.

“We are immensely grateful because it has been a bit slower than usual due to the lack of staff, but the community is still very supportive,” Mr Singh said.

said they had no words to express their gratitude for the people of Euroa and surrounds.

“So far we are blessed and so happy with the response of Euroa,” Mr Singh said “I really want to thank Euroa locals for their overwhelming support, it’s thank to them we can make this work.”

Julie Lind just founded Café 56 on the main street, and for her finding staff was not too much of a concern.

“I opened my small business in Euroa in November 2019 as a recycled furniture and paint shop,” Mrs Lind said.

“COVID-19 hit and hit my business hard so I decided to go back to my roots of hospitality.

“We are closed on Wednesday and Thursday open all other days 9am to 5pm.

“The support from the locals has been amazing in the short time we have been open.”

TRUCK driving is ranked to be the fourth gender breakdown of the top 30 jobs in Australia regarding the high proportion of men in the industry.

The last census shows that 96.7 per cent of truck drivers in Australia are male, the remaining 3.3 per cent are female, which places truck driving among the most masculine profession after carpenters and joiners, motor mechanics and electricians.

The Euroa Gazette spoke with some of the few rare birds who chose to be truck drivers by trade, and their careers are impressive.

Alison Mc Diarmid, 52, has been in transport on and off for many years in varying roles, second in charge at Beef Export Abattoir.

“I drove concrete trucks around the Bendigo region for a few years and then UGround at Fosterville Gold, UG Haul Trucks at Costerfield, ran weighbridge at the Axedale Hard Rock Hanson quarry and now operate FEL’s, Dump Trucks at a SQuarry Seymour,” Ms Mc Diarmid said.

She was born and in raised in Violet Town with a long history in agriculture, diesel mechanics, heavy haulage from Euroa and Longwood.

“In every role and career there are challenges,” Ms Mc Diarmid said.

“I have found the biggest challenge early in my career was perception and intimidation.

“I was raised to be honest, back yourself, when you’ve nearly ran out of steam use it to store more and doubt kills what optimism thrives on.

“Best thing I did for me was to believe in me and being paid is a good motivator.”

Ms Mc Diarmid said she had learnt a lot from her experiences.

“My advice to anyone taking on any career is ask questions, take constructive criticism to excel, be honest with yourself, be cautious,” she said.

“Go with your gut, don’t be

“I contract my tractor and mulcher, I am also a breast cancer patient,” she said.

Bec Threlfall is also a truckie among other things.

“I am a fifth generation farmer, a model, a librarian, a truck driver, a heavy machinery operator such as excavators, a performer and a small business owner,” she said.

“My life has many varied aspects and it is “all go” most of the time.

“Sometimes people don’t bat an eyelid at a female as a truck driver or working in a male-dominated industry,” Ms Threlfall said.

“Sometimes people do a double take.

“Sometimes people are surprised or impressed.

“Very rarely does it occur that a comment is said that may be somewhat rude.”

According to Ms Threlfall, “it isn’t such a rarity to see women in these roles any-

more”.

“Early on, I felt that I needed to work extra hard to prove myself but not anymore,” she said.

“Once I was confident in my own abilities I didn’t care what anyone else thought, that’s probably how anyone would feel taking on a new position though.

“The only complication I find is having access to facilities.

“Working in earthmoving in an agricultural field means there may not be bathroom access on a job.”

Ms Threlfall said it was not so bad being in a rural setting, but when working on the edge of town in an open paddock, it could get a little embarrassing.

“For me, working in a male dominated industry means lots of rolling my eyes at boys being boys,” she said.

“Other than that, it’s just like any other job.”

Pauline Polly Brodie has spent most of her life in the Euroa area and also became a truckie, despite the industry being heavily masculine.

“My parents live in Longwood and I currently live in the Hunter valley (NSW) driving the haul trucks in a coal mine.”

Renay Earp drove trucks for 20 years, B doubles and road trains.

“When I first started driving I was the only lady at McPhee’s transport driving a eight tonne truck,” Ms Earp said.

“I then got my semi licence and started driving across to Perth.”

Ms Earp said being in the industry was not usual as a woman.

“It was very unusual in the early 90s to see females by themselves, most were the wives helping their husbands,” she said.

“It wasn’t an easy job especially with dogs and chains and when I’m only five feet tall.

“I’ve done B doubles and road trains, tankers and I’ve changed a few tyres in my time and seen some beautiful country side.”

For Ms Earp, the male gaze in the truck driving industry was sometimes overbearing.

“The males were a bit funny about women out there but if we could do the job that’s the main thing,” she said.

Ms Earp is 57 now and was 25 when she first started driving.

“People couldn’t believe I drove trucks because I was so small,” she said.

“But I showed them I could do it.

“Being in a male industry it was very hard but I learnt a lot from them.

“And they always help you if you needed it.

“I wish I could go back and do it all over again.

“They say trucking gets in your blood, and it’s true, it does.”

RESIDENTS will be able to enjoy a wide range of free, inclusive, accessible events as part of the newly released Australia Day 2022 program by Strathbogie Shire Council.

Australia Day celebrations through Strathbogie Shire, who is inviting community members to get together to reflect, respect and acknowledge on Australia Day 2022.

Award ceremonies will be held in five townships on Australia Day (January 26) - these being Violet Town, Avenel, Nagambie, Euroa and Longwood.

The winners of Strathbogie Shire’s Australia Day awards will be announced on the day in the following six award categories: Community Organisation of the Year, Junior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Laura Binks, said the winners of the Shire-wide awards would also be announced on the day.

“Australia Day is a time to reflect on our collective past, present and future,” Cr Binks said.

“In our shire it’s also an opportunity for us to acknowledge members of our community who are doing great things.

“These are the people, and groups, who volunteer their time to create the sense of community that makes Strathbogie Shire such a wonderful place.

“It’s an opportunity for us to recognise the people who make our community better.

“I recognise the January 26 can bring pain to First Nations people and we will explore how we acknowledge this and work towards creating events that are respectful and inclusive in the future.”

Community events and activities will be held across the country in 2022 with the support of the National Australia Day Council (NADC).

NADC Chief Executive Karlie Brand said that on Australia Day we listen and respect each other’s stories, contributions and aspirations and celebrate being Australian together.

“This year, the NADC received a record number of grant applications from local government authorities and community organisations to support local Australia Day events and activities,” Ms Brand said.

“We celebrate Australia Day because I was born in Australia and my husband came here at the age of one and became an Australian citizen at one on Australia Day so the day means a lot to us,” she said.

“Those who don’t wish to celebrate it can do as they wish, but it has significance to the majority of Australians.”

Ingrid Withers said she celebrated because she was grateful.

“My parents came over to Aus-

tralia from Europe in 1958 after the war and I was born 11 years later,” she said.

“After living here for two years they decided to make Australia their forever home so we could all have a better and easier life.

“I personally celebrate “Australia Day” because I am so grateful that my parents chose Australia for us.”

For Steve Tobin, “it’s a day to celebrate how lucky we all are to live in a beautiful country, and to drink beers”.

Australia Day is seen as controversial by a a part of the population because the date commemorates the British colonization on January 26 1788, which was renamed as “Invasion Day” by Aboriginal groups.

Aboriginal Australians have led the charge for it to be commemorated at a different time of the year.

Frank Phipps, local Aboriginal man, said for him Australia Day on January 26 was not a special day for him.

“I call that day Amnesia Day, because Aboriginal people were simply forgotten when they chose that date,” Mr Phipps said.

“I don’t get upset when others

celebrate because that day means different things for different people.

“It really is how you want to take it as an individual.

“Whether you celebrate it as Australia Day, invasion day or amnesia day, whatever you want to take it and it’s pointless to get upset about it, as it’s another day and we have to live with what happened in the past.

“We cannot change the past.”

So for other locals, Australia day is still very important but should maybe be celebrated on another date, a date which would unite all.

“I don’t celebrate Australia Day, I believe it’s divisive, I have no problem with others celebrating,” local Chris Young said.

“We had Federation Day when I was young that’s gone and Australia Day will go also.

“The only way for a national celebration to survive is for the whole population to recognise all who live here are equal no matter their colour or creed.”

Community member Catherine Dennis said she stopped celebrating Australia Day a while ago.

“I used to celebrate, but now that I know more about the history and suffering of indiginous Australians I tend to be more reflectful, and have a quiet day,” Mrs Dennis said.

For James Howden, Australia Day should be celebrated but on another date.

“To a lot of people, Australia Day is about being Australian, having a barbecue and before social media, a lot of people would not have known the history surrounding that day,” Mr Howden said.

“Nowadays Google will tell you it was the day 11 ships sailed into Port Jackson and Govenor Phillip raised the Union Jack.

“We should have an Australia Day, but it should be a neutral day.”

Lainie Bower decided she would not celebrate.

“Why would we have a party in our house, Australia, on the day a member of our household is grieving,” she said.

“It’s so easy to just change the date so we can celebrate together.

“It’s just logic to me that we should be embracing the wonderful culture of the first Australians as part of any celebration.”

Nicole Wells said January 26 was a relatively recent date chosen as Australia Day, much to the dismay of many First Nations people.

“I would love for us all to agree on a date that doesn’t upset or anger the Traditional Owners,” she said.

Some 92 of Australians are open to the idea of a republic, with only eight per cent opposed to any form of change.

Fighting for rural communities

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL IT is that time of the year again when North East Emergency Action Group (NEEAG) starts their preparations for the next North East Emergency Expo to be held in 2023.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor laura Binks said the NEEAG is seeking expressions of interests from local emergency organisations, support groups, clubs and/or community groups who may wish to host the next North East Emergency Expo.

“This is an opportunity for our volunteers to showcase to our community what they do during and after emergencies, along with opportunities to fundraise,” she said.

“In Strathbogie Shire we have so many volunteers who give up their time to protect our community during emergencies.

“We appreciate their dedication, which helps keep so many of us safe.”

This event was originally created by a VICSES volunteer to showcase to communities in the north east, what resources are available to them before, during and after emergencies and to help them build resilience.

The event is now run by the NEEAG Incorporated, with volunteers from various emergency service organisations

NAGAMBIE: The original event was in Whorouly in 2016, with the second one in Moyhu in 2018 and third in Nagambie in 2021 (delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19). and the general public apart of the team.

It will also be a great networking day for emergency organisations, support groups, clubs and community groups to discuss ideas in planning for and responding to emergencies.

The event includes a fundraising appeal, for the local community and can be used for anything emergency related, this includes emergency service organisations/groups, support programs and community projects.

The past three events have

seen successful outcomes for their communities, with learnings taken out of each event.

The original event was in Whorouly in 2016, with the second one in Moyhu in 2018 and third in Nagambie in 2021 (delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19).

Today Carina Newton, NEEAG president is writing to seek expressions of interest for the next emergency expo.

To be eligible to hold this event you must: - be a town or community in North East Victoria with a population under 5000;

- have a suitable location to hold it, such as a high school, recreation reserve or football oval; and - have a charity or project that is worthy of funds.

Euroa landscape through an outer gaze

By JOJO BEARD I AM Jojo Beard, a resident of the Macedon Ranges and I spent the summer of 2021, my first months out of high school, working in a program run by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, in collaboration with the Euroa Arboretum and local seed bank.

In a team of five our role involved collecting native seed from the local catchment area, cleaning the seed and helping with nursery work around the arboretum.

This is my reflection on my observations during that time.

There is a subtle boundary in the landscape which I noticed between my home in the Macedon Ranges, and my job in Euroa.

For a few months last year, I worked in a small team collecting native seeds for the local arboretum and seed bank.

Weekly, I commuted here from central Victoria.

It was in this transit that I saw the landscape discreetly shift before the contrast became starkly apparent.

This shift was most obvious to me in the grasses, which seemingly dried and browned off many weeks before the grasses of home did, leaving the land blonde.

The change in hue felt so profound to me as I drove, that I would miss the green sight of home, though I had never

known that it was a comfort to me.

Such is the power of a landscape, the change in environment that I was witnessing during my commute was explained to me.

The greedy Great Dividing Range musters the clouds on their way from the sea, and coerces them with its altitude to let the rain spill upon it, I was told.

This leaves the country in the north of the state thirsty.

I found that these different conditions explained the changes in the land, and increasingly I came to believe that the different land explained the people.

Those that I knew in Euroa, were magnetised to and affectionate of their blonde country.

Possessing the same patience as it does, while it waits for the rains which the mountains reserve.

It’s a tough and stoic environment there.

The people seemed to be shaped by it, and kind because of it.

Humble yet vivid like the unassuming wildflowers that flicker between the long grasses in warmer months.

For these reasons, memories of my time spent in Euroa come to me as a vivid shade of gold.

I see lashings of it, it’s in the grasses, and the people and the bald hills in summer.

Wineries seeking bigger workforce

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL wine producers are on their way of hiring workforce ahead of the harvest season, and it recent years, it has been become challenging because of staff shortage.

Owen Bobeldyk from Veldhuis Wines said he was dreading that time of the year.

“I haven’t started looking for pickers yet but feel it is doing to be difficult this year like last year, especially for small growers and contractors are going to put there prices up and with wine prices and sales down the net marginal difference will have growers questioning the risk reward for picking and processing,” he said.

Tahbilk’s general manager Jo Nash commented on Tahbilk’s experience of employing cellar hands ahead of vintage.

“I guess from my point of view, we actually love having different people come into the winery to work harvest,” Ms Nash said.

“They bring new ideas, new energy and they just break up the normal.

“Most people come along prepared to work hard, however it is not just hard work, but a wonderful team building experience, whereby strangers come together, work together and often leave being lifelong friends.”

For Tahbilk, it has also been challenging.

“There are always challenges, nothing new there, and I don’t imagine that this will change in the future, however it always comes together, we always get the work done,

“With issues and challenges like COVID-19, really it just adds another complexity to what is already a complex time, however I don’t know that this is going to change, we just need to look at ways of adapting and thinking outside the box.”

However, Jenny Houghton from Maygars Hill said they never had issues finding a workforce.

“Because we are so small we never have issues,” Mrs Houghton said.

Sam Plunkett from Wine by Sam said this year the staff shortage was high.

“We normally run a full time crew of four in the cellar, and bring on three casuals for the 10-12 week vintage period through February March and April,” Mr Plunkett said.

“This year we are looking to have an extra casual to give us some contingency for expected sick days with likely COVID-19 infections over vintage.

“It’s been difficult putting the vin-

tage crew together for the coming harvest.

“We generally get 20-30 applicants for vintage jobs listed on the Travelling Winemakers Facebook page, this year we got three.”

Mr Plunkett said Australia was missing the community of young winemakers and cellar hands travelling to Australia on a working holiday visa.

“We had a good prospect from France (a young oenologist with Champagne producer Veuve Clicquot), but ultimately she was not confidant of getting a visa, so was

“I’m concerned that we won’t have the team to do a good job as winemakers, so have backed off the intake for the coming vintage.

“So the labour shortage has a direct impact on the winery and the opportunity for growers to sell their crop.”

Mr Plunkett said there was more to the crisis than just short staff.

“In truth it’s more complicated than just a labour shortage,” he said.

“I got advice earlier this week that a new press we had ordered from Germany won’t arrive until after vintage due to COVID-19 related shipping challenges, and slower than normal manufacturing in Germany.

“And there is near certainty that some of the team will get COVID-19 and need time off to recover.

“Today we have three of the team quarantining as close contacts, or with COVID. “It’s frustrating that we can’t get rapid antigen tests (RAT) to get the clock running down on people’s quarantine period, and one of the team waited eight days for a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) result.

“Health workers are doing an amazing job, but it feels like the Australian government has been caught flat footed with availability of RATs and resourcing for PCR testing. “ “This is frustrating, particularly when we see countries like the United Kingdom who have good supply of RAT tests and have been using them to track the infection rate for months.”

Bush Kinder project receives grant VIOLET Town Kindergarten were recently announced as successful applicants for $4264 towards their Project: Bush Kinder through the FRRR Program, Strengthening Rural Communities.

It is committed to developing the ecological identity of all children in their care.

Chief Executive Office Ronni Druitt said children are natural learners and so this program funded generously by FRRR will provide them with the time and an ideal environment for them to learn in uninterrupted play in the bush, using what nature has provided as learning materials.

This Bush Kinder program will educate children about veteran trees and dangers associated in nature.

It will also be developing a natural low impact barrier with the children and committee of management to identify the fall zone of veteran trees, in the area used for periods of uninterrupted play.

Guiding children to respect the veteran tree zones for flora and fauna.

These funds will contribute to purchasing the appropriate items required for Bush Kinder such as weatherproof clothing to provide to our vulnerable children to use, travel carts to transport our items, fishing materials and other items to explore nature.

Violet Town Kindergarten will also provide the children with waterproof cameras to use and then download them back at the centre and discuss what they found.

KINDY: Grants such as these are integral to our small communities that support Early Childhood Centres with new and existing programs improving learning environments.

Research has shown that some of the benefits to Bush Kinder include: • outdoor play gets children moving; • being outside makes children happy; • boost immunity; • promote creativity; and • Fosters Respect and connection to the environment.

Bushfire place of last resort STRATHBOGIE Shire residents are being reminded about bushfire and preparing personal bushfire readiness plans during the summer months.

At its September meeting Strathbogie Shire Council moved the Euroa Bushfire Place of Last Resort (BPLR) from the Kirkland Avenue site to Euroa Swimming Pool car park.

According to Mayor Cr Laura Binks, this new location is separated further from native vegetation along the Seven Creeks reserve and complies with the CFA guidelines for outdoor BPLRs. “It is important to have these areas for our visitors and community members should a bushfire cause an emergency in our shire,” Cr Binks said.

“Councils in country Victoria are obliged to identify these emergency areas which were formerly known as Neighbourhood Safer Places, so this just represents a change of location for Euroa.”

THE Euroa U3A is finalising its program for 2022 which will include regular favourites such as games, philosophy and astronomy as well as introducing new classes as a result of requests from members.

Enrolment Day is Tuesday, January 25 at the RSL room in Kirkland Avenue, from 10am to 12 noon.

Enrolment forms for 2022 are being sent out to members this week by post and email.

Enrolment forms will also be available on Enrolment Day. The lodging of all enrolment forms must be done in conjunction with proof of at least your

double vaccination.

The cost of membership remains at $15 per annum.

It is our aim to offer you something else to think about (other than COVID-19).

We hope our activities and classes will inspire and relax you as well as give members the opportunity to enjoy sharing their knowledge, life skills and friendship.

Members frequently ask if we are able to offer additional and different classes and activities which we are more than happy to do - but it all depends on you the members or people you know who may be willing to share their life experiences and skills with others.

This year, for starters, we will be offering classes on Cyber Safety and the word processing package ‘Word’.

They will be held at the Euroa Library - dates and times will be announced shortly.

Other requests have been for classes on current affairs and gentle exercises for seniors.

We would appreciate hearing from anyone, who would like to convene current affairs (it is a topic where shared leadership would work well) as well as a suitably qualified person who could conduct an exercise class focusing on the need of senior citizens.

If you know of anyone who may be available and keen, please in-

form the U3A Euroa committee.

Classes and activities that will be operating during 2022 are: art appreciation, astronomy, Australian literature, bushwalking, weekly walks, games, Mahjong, meditation, morning coffee and conversation (including guest speakers), philosophy, Shakespeare, and spirituality.

An important point to be aware of is that the University of the Third Age - Euroa and District Inc branch - is quite different and totally separate from the Euroa Third Age. We are good mates but offer entirely different programs.

By GECKO CLAN LAND CARE NETWORK GECKO CLaN Landcare Network has been facilitating land management initiatives throughout the Goulburn Broken Catchment for over 30 years.

Gecko’s 19 Landcare groups are powered by dedicated volunteers who undertake proficient farming methods to enhance productivity and projects that ensure ecological biodiversity is maintained and improved.

With increasing numbers of Victorians moving to regional areas from capital cities Gecko CLaN provides an opportunity to support growing communities.

As Gecko’s Chairperson, Neil Devanny said “we look forward to working with new landholders and to share the knowledge of existing farmers, research or-

ganisations and traditional owners to maintain and enhance best practice land management skills”.

Gecko looks forward to inviting the community to upcoming workshops on soil testing, erosion control, tree planting, mental health support, fire and drought preparation and water management projects.

As Mr Devanny explained, “the Gecko CLaN Landcare Network aims to be inclusive in sharing opportunities for growth to strive for healthier land, animals, plants and water ways”.

During 2021 Landcare groups worked together to implement a dung beetle breeding program.

“The dung beetle project has been fun and informative,” Landcare facilitator Brigitte Brocklesby said.

“Children are enthralled by the process, and we are very excited to watch the

beetle farms grow.

“We are already distributing the beetles throughout the wider community for increased soil and stock health.”

Fast facts on the nutritional grazing value of summer weeds AN informative article ‘Grazing value of summer weeds’ has been published in Spring Sheep Notes 2021, looking into the nutritional value of sheep eating weeds during the summer season.

Agriculture Victoria livestock extension officer Raquel Waller said some summer weeds can cause animal health issues, while others have nutritional value for sheep which may be worth considering before deciding to spray and remove them.

Ms Waller said green pick over summer can provide protein, which is a necessary component of the sheep’s diet and is important for the digestion of the lowquality dry feed that may be on offer.

“In the absence of a summer pasture species like lucerne, summer weeds can be of value,” she said.

“However, it is important to know your weeds, since toxic weeds can affect the health of the flock.

The article outlines the nutritional value of some weeds that are potentially useful over summer.

Now is the time to target rabbits

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL AGRICULTURE Victoria and the Victorian Rabbit Action Network is encouraging landowners to get together with their neighbours to plan a rabbit control program, with summer and early autumn the best time reduce local rabbit populations.

Local farmer Edward Mercer said rabbits were an issue in the region “Rabbits for me just cause issues by bearing areas out around there burrows which can lead to erosion,” Mr Mercer said.

“They often make burrows in areas which are very hard to control with ripping or fumigating.

“They target freshly sown paddocks and can ruin pastures and crops when they are establishing.”

Agriculture Victoria biosecurity manager Jason Wishart said the best rabbit control results are achieved when landowners work together and implement management programs when rabbit populations are at their lowest.

“With food scarcer over the summer period, there is a natural pause in the breeding cycle, so the time to act is now,” he said.

Mr Wishart said control techniques such as baiting and ripping also become more effective at this time year because the rabbits are more likely to eat bait and the soils are more fri-

able and better for ripping.

“While there are a number of biological control agents in the environment such as myxomatosis and RHDV (calicivirus), they are not effective for managing rabbit populations on their own,” he said.

“The most effective programs are those that adopt the ‘rabbit recipe’ which is an integrated approach using a combination of baiting, ripping and fumigation.

“It is also critical to monitor rabbit numbers before and after your program to confirm that you are having the desired impact on the rabbit population.”

Rabbits cause considerable damage to agriculture as they consume pasture and various

crops and compete with livestock for feed.

This, coupled with their burrowing behaviour, also leads to soil erosion and other land degradation issues.

Rabbits also have a significant impact on the natural environment through selective grazing, competition with native species and habitat degradation.

Mr Wishart said effective rabbit management is especially critical at the moment because populations are predicted to increase as a result of the late browning of vegetation this spring and summer.

Friends of Nagambie Pool update

By JILLY BRANAGAN WHEN asked to write an article for the Friends of Nagambie Pool, I was prompted to investigate a little of the history of our town pool.

As always, it is an interesting journey when you start to follow the threads of where it all began.

Our current president Cheryl Mensfeld suggested I contact some of the early members and pick their brains for the required gems of information.

Luckily, one of the original members, Judy Finnigan, passed me on to Ronda Richards and she was able to recall many of the details from where the pool all began over 40 years ago.

Ronda, Val LeDeux and Moz Fowler were also some of the original members of the committee and volunteers keeping the doors open and the pool running on the roster system.

Val also taught swimming lessons.

There were others, who I have not listed, but all contributed equally to the operation of the pool in the early days.

The community rallied and formed a committee, they decided they would build a pool, after consultation with the then Shire of Goulburn, engineer David Saunders.

Who went on to be a very active hands on participant.

The options for sites were investigated.

Originally the plan was to have it in Buckley Park by the lake, but back then there was a camping park in that area, so the site behind the current Recreation Reserve was selected.

David told me that the shire funded some of the cost but the rest was raised by the members of the community.

Offers to help build the pool were forthcoming from local residents and contractors.

Interestingly, the pool hole was dug by Les Howell, only using a back hoe, not excavator that would be used today - an amazing feat.

With all the support and fundraising by the community, the pool was eventually completed.

The committee had a roster of volunteers who manned the pool and ran the canteen.

This was not entirely a success due to the usual needs of volunteers only being available or unavailable more to the point, some of the time. With some like Ronda and Moz manning the pool most of the time.

When the pool was completed, they named it the Albert Tome Memorial Pool in honor of the long service given by him to the Shire of Goulburn and all the work he contributed to the building of the pool.

He died shortly after the pool was completed.

We hope to resurrect this naming honor and further investigate future usage of the name and signage.

There is still some evidence of where the old sign was erected at the pool, and we are hunting for the sign, which may be stored in one of the storage sheds at the pool.

As the years passed, the shire ran the pool and over the last few years a contractor has been engaged to manage our pool and the other pools in the shire.

They are responsible to have the life guards and the pool opening during the hours listed.

The Friends of the Pool group continued over the years, mainly as a support and fundraising

group to ensure the pool’s continuance in the town.

Raffles and the occasional grant helped buy some equipment and maintain shade sales etc.

With the ever increasing social media exposure, our Facebook page has sparked some interest from those wishing to be kept informed of what is happening at the pool.

We are hoping to meet soon and work out some exciting new ideas for the pool.

Our current committee have decided to start an official membership listing, giving us clarity on how many there are in the group.

Up to now a general email has been sent to an old list of previously interested folk, but we are hoping to tidy this up and appeal for new ideas and suggestions on how to raise the profile of our pool.

Signage has always been an issue; we have requested from VicRoads to put sign on the Main Road corner with Vickers Road indicating the pool location.

When the pool is open, there are flags that are to be put up at the gate to the recreation reserve.

We are intending to put up posters in shops so that visitors and even locals, who are not

aware of the pool or its location, may be willing to try the facility or tell others about it.

There are some pool parties planned by the shire, we are hoping these will still be able to go ahead. Watch the Facebook posts for further updates on this.

I have produced a brochure and some stickers that can be handed out at the Information centre, when visitors ask if we have a pool.

They can then be given precise directions to where to locate it.

Currently, the pool is closed due to a pump failure, it has been greatly missed, over this hot spell and the busy holiday period, but the shire has managed to get a new pump and we are hoping all goes well with the pipework and that it will be able to reopen soon.

Surrounding pools have been utilised, and Avenel and even Murchison Pool are favorite destinations if you are missing our pool, give them a try.

Clay target competitors come to Mansfield from far and wide

IN IT TO WIN IT: Competitors came from all over Victoria to compete in Mansfield. served while scores were tallied.

Combined event winners were, overall Tony Rohrlach (Euroa) 122/125, second in AA Grade local Rob Kirley.

A grade was won by Alexandra’s Ray Whyte 113 over Marty McLachlan (Mansfield) 110.

B grade was a three way tie 113/125 requiring a 50 points shoot-off to determine the winner as Ryan Logan (Numurkah) 47/50 over Carson Weingott (Mansfield) 46/50.

Following lunch the final competition of the day commenced with 40 targets thrown as 20 pair.

AFTER Tony’s recent North Eastern Zone Mixed Target Championship win at Euroa last Sunday, he has continued his excellent form.

Mansfield staged their annual Champion of Champions event on Sunday 16th February with a strong entry of shooters both from Mansfield and surrounding clubs.

The Champion of Champions event is 75 targets broken into three disciplines, each of 25 targets beginning with double barrel followed by single barrel and finally point score, the most difficult section of the event.

This is because the competitor must break each target with the first barrel to gain the maximum three points followed by two for a second barrel hit.

Tony completed his last 25 targets perfectly and totaled with his earlier two brackets, scored 122/125 to win the Champion of Champions outright.

Not content with this he then went on to take out the 20 pair double rise championship.

In this event a pair of targets are thrown with a score kept of those that are broken by the competitor.

Tony shot 36/40 to once again win an event outright.

Congratulations Tony on a very successful day.

THE monthly Mansfield Clay Target Club shoot was held on Sunday in sunny calm conditions.

Nine squads were made up from 44 competitors.

The day’s events were the annual Champion of Champions which was followed by a 20 Pair Double rise Championship.

Competitors came from far and wide and included club representatives from Alexandra, Benalla, Euroa, Wangaratta, Woods Point, Corowa, Melbourne, Yarrawonga and Numurkah.

The day kicked off with a 10 target Point Score eyeopener cash divide with the money in AA grade going to junior shooter Cameron Ford of Corowa on 30/30.

A Grade was split between local Phillip Desmond and Tom McGrath of Alexandra 27/30, B Grade was a three way tie between woods point representatives Chuck Lay, Kirsten Chinn and Mansfield local David Luelf on 30/30.

C Grade by himself was Mansfield member Callum Harris 27/30.

This lead into the big competition of the day, Champion of Champions, being a mixed bag of targets over three disciplines totalled for a single overall result, all three events were shot off 18 metres.

The first challenge was a 25 target double barrel shot off layout one immediately followed by the next stage on layout two, 25 target single barrel.

After all squads circulated through the last phase of the competition was shot as point score 12 targets of layout one followed by 13 of layout two.

Hot weather doesn’t deter bowlers EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By AUDREY MCINTOSH THE first Saturday pennant matches for 2022 took place on Saturday, January 15 when division one played at Kyabram, division four home to Tatura Hill Top and division six north also home playing East Shepparton.

Not a very successful day all round but some rinks managed a win, but not enough to cover the others to get the points needed to snatch the win.

Division one lost 79/102 to Kyabram, division four a loss to Tatura Hill Top 102/110 and division six north also lost to East Shepparton 59/66.

Welcome return for Avenel bowlers eager to play AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT IN a welcome return to pennant bowls after the three week Christmas break, Avenel division two played at home against Shepparton Golf in round eight of GMBR midweek pennant.

The playing surface bowled superbly after regenerating for five weeks since the green was lasered in early December.

In a ‘no excuses’ match Avenel were victorious with two winning rinks and one very close loss to claim overall points 14 - 71 to Shepparton Golf 2 - 59.

Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) went into the break one point behind Shepparton Golf with a seven/ seven split of winning ends after the first fourteen ends.

Resuming after lunch it was all Avenel, winning eight ends to three to win the game 28 - 17.

Roy Cooper, Dennis McGregor, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) won the lead in the fourth end in a close match.

However, Shepparton Golf gave chase and caught Avenel on end 22 to draw even at 18 all.

In the remaining three ends, Avenel scored four shots to one with skipper Spud Furletti nudging out Shepparton Golf’s shot bowl on the last end for a hard fought 22 - 19 win.

Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy, Rob Kemp, Noel Slater (s) in another close game held the lead from the fourth end till end 16 when Shepparton Golf scored a five to take the lead by four shots.

By end 22 the visitors were six up before Avenel won the last three ends scoring four shots but fell two shots short for the game win, 21 - 23.

The next game for division 2 is away against Seymour.

The start time has been bought forward for the remaining midweek pennant games.

Dookie were simply too good winning 14 - 72 to Avenel 0 - 36.

Dookie got away early from Graham Lewis, Ruth Underwood, Bill O’Connor, Graeme Toy (s) when they scored 14 shots in five ends.

After the break Avenel won six ends straight to haul in a 20 shot deficit by 7 shots.

But Dookie re-focused and won the game comfortably 35 - 17.

Marion Gittus, Glen Bell, Joyce White, George Pedler (s) didn’t need to get the pencil out until the sixth end.

By then they were 16 down.

As hard as they tried, they

couldn’t catch Dookie who won by 18 shots 37 - 19.

Division 5 play Colbinabbin away next week in round 9.

WEEKEEND PENNANT IN round eight division 3 played at home against East Shepparton.

With all rinks on fire, it was a whitewash for Avenel winning by 70 shots, 16 - 122 to East Shepparton 0 - 52.

Rusty Schwab, Kate Donovan, Rob Kemp, Brett McDonald (s) flew out of the blocks to win the first five ends to be up 12 zip.

From thereon they were never troubled, winning eighteen ends all up in a great team effort to claim a 30 shot win, 38 - 8.

Donna Rowley, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley, Noel Slater (s) were

two down at the break for lunch.

Whatever was in their sandwiches should be patented because in the second half they won eleven of the remaining twelve ends adding to fifteen to their score while restricting East Shepparton to one winning end for one shot.

The 36 - 14 score line secured another rink win for Avenel.

Ruth King, Grace Kenworthy, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) led from the get-go in a solid team performance to win their game 23 - 14.

They were nine shots up at the midway point of the game and won by nine shots after an even second half.

In the closest match of the day,

Fay Hateley, Jake Wall, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) were in a see-sawing game with no more than three shots separating the two teams till end 23.

Avenel then scored seven over the last two ends to win by nine, 25 - 16.

Next Saturday Avenel travel to Stanhope for their round 9 match.

With club stalwarts to help the young and inexperienced bowlers Avenel division 6 South were impressive winning two rinks playing Yea on their home green, but fell short of taking the overall win, Yea 12 - 74 defeated Avenel 4 - 59.

Helped with a six on end thirteen, Kyle Pedder, Marion Gittus, Charlie Kemp, Graeme Toy (s)with sheer determination, nutted out five shot win 22 - 17.

P. Cooper, Graham Lewis, James Wall, Jason Toy (s) hung on for a gritty win after the scores were even five times during the game.

On end 23 Avenel were two shots down, however, winning the last two ends with four shots saw them victorious 21 - 19.

Mitch Thomas, Terry Muller, Joyce White, George Pedler winning only eight ends, were no match for a strong Yea outfit losing 16 - 38.

The round nine match for division six south next Saturday is away against Seymour.

The first Mystery Tea for the New Year will be on Thursday 27 January following practice. Family and friends are most welcome to attend.

Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers kick off 2022 season THE Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association kicks off the program for 2022 at Parklands Golf Club on Monday, January 31 with a 4BBB event and 8.30am assembly.

It helps the organisation if partners register together.

The host club and the association will be operating under a COVIDSafe plan which will include signing in with the QR code; show proof of full vaccination status; wearing of face masks indoors except when seated and eating or drinking; density limits indoors (maxi-

mum numbers of people allowed in a space - one per two square metres indoor).

The rules governing public gatherings may change at any time so all will need to be flexible and understanding in compliance.

Membership renewal fees and joining fee for new

members has remained at $20.

The syllabus for 2022 is printed on the membership card as usual.

Memberships will only be issued to fully vaccinated patrons and this will serve as proof of vaccination status throughout the year.

The Annual General Meeting will be held at the conclusion of play and we invite all to consider nominating for a position on the committee.

The VVGA advise that entry forms are now available for the Annual 4BBB championships to be played

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE summer of golf continues to be popular with the Nagambie members, 36 players took to the course to contest Sunday’s Par event, and the daytime temperature remained pleasant for the morning round allowing some excellent scores to be returned.

Two +5 results were the leading scores with the winner being Graeme Galvin on a countback, Galvin drove the ball magnificently all day and capitalized around the greens with some confident putting to take the win.

Finding form once again was Gary Bow with a +5, hopefully Gary can maintain his form going into a summer pennant season next week.

Rounding out the top three was Michael Roberts on +3 sharpening his skills for a tilt at this year’s coming club championship.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Rhys Shepherd with a thunderbolt on the 3rd, Greg Whiteman was all over the flag on the difficult 8th, the unflappable Phil Hageman taking home the 13th and Mi-

chael Roberts jamming one into the 16th.

Next week’s golf will move to Saturday morning a two man ambrose will be played with hit off between 8.00 to 8.30am, this is due to Nagambie hosting the first round of summer pennant on the Sunday, hope to see as many as possible and good luck to the Nagambie Pennant team.

Conditions were perfect and those that chased that little white ball enjoyed the experience.

The winner was Kerry Hewlett with 33 points Greg Roberts got the only lineball.

Next Tuesday’s game is going to be a bit of a challenge as it was decided that the ladies will hit off the men’s tee on the second and the men will for the first time take on the the new championship tee across the water.

A survival kit of flippers, life vests, goggles, raft and balls is to be left handy.

Also it is rumoured that some of the men may wear skirts.

Stableford was played on Saturday, January 15 and 40 ml of rain fell on the course Friday night.

A big field took on the challenge and again Jack Mc Donald won the men’s with 36 points.

A good effort as the handicapper had got him a stroke from the previous week.

The winner of the ladies was Gayle Raffery with 31 points.

Her putts just wouldn’t drop.

Lineballs were won by David Kennett with 33 points, and Greg Roberts with 32 points.

Bowlers put the ice on opposition

By TOMAS FOGARTY Euroa 4/91 (R Hill 20* retired, A Murray 12) defeated Northerners 6/55 (W Jackson 2/2, A Murray 1/0, K Wolfenden 1/1) FOR the first game back after the Christmas break, Euroa travelled to Tallygaroopna on a hot and humid morning to take on Northerners.

The team was missing a couple of big names but the welcome return of Will Creevey and Angus Murray from long term injuries helped with the balance of the line-up.

Euroa won the toss and had no hesitation in batting, even though the wicket was a bit sticky.

Disciplined bowling and a damp outfield made scoring difficult for Euroa but the boys stuck to the task and worked hard for their runs.

Opener Ryan Hill (20* retired) was the standout performer with the bat, making scoring look easy on an otherwise testing wicket.

He was ably supported by Angus Murray (12), Will Creevey (11) and Mitch Walters (10* retired).

In an even team effort with the bat, Euroa finish their innings with the score on 4/91.

Euroa’s score was always going to be a difficult one to overhaul but after a long layoff over Christmas the boys could’ve been excused if they were a bit rusty.

Any concerns were quickly allayed as Euroa restricted Northerners to six runs off the first five overs and continued their excellent bowling form.

All bowlers contributed when they were called on with Walter Jackson (2/2), Angus Murray (1/0) and Kusuma Wolfenden (1/1) returning the best figures.

The boys kept the pressure on

Unlucky loss for A grade cricketers

A GRADE travelled to Vilbert Reserve on a humid day to be greeted by a wet pitch after storms rolled across the region Friday night.

After losing the toss Euroa were sent in to bat on a pitch that had a few demons in it.

After losing an early wicket Vaughan Kirk and Josh Robertson steadied the ship until they were both dismissed in quick succession.

Needing a partnership all-rounder Andrew Squires joined Fraser Ellis at the crease at 3/20.

A 64 run partnership got Euroa back on track before Ellis was dismissed.

Jake Smith Joined Squires at the crease at 4/84.

They then went on the counter attack and took it to the Karramomus bowing attack for a blistering 50 run partnership before Squires was dismissed.

Euroa then lost their way losing 5/19 to put up a defendable total of 153.

Skipper Carl Norton set the challenge to his troops to bend their back and really put it to the opposition.

Fraser Ellis and Fletcher Paul worked hard Early with Fletcher getting an

early breakthrough. Unfortunately, unable to keep that momentum going, Euroa let the pressure off.

A 77 run second wicket stand had Karramomus in the box seat.

Mitch Walters in his First A grade game for the club made a great first impression with very tidy 5 overs for 14 runs and a brilliant run out.

Jake Smith and Andrew Squires bowled well in a partnership to get the game into the last 5 overs. Poor fielding and some loose bowling ultimately cost Euroa the game with their 153 chased down with 10 balls to go in the innings.

Next round Euroa hope to bounce back against winless Shepparton United in Euroa.

Round two of the Captain’s Trophy draws large playing field

By KRISTINA MILBURN A GROUP of 33 players contested round two of the Captain’s Trophy on Saturday, January 15.

The couch grass fairways were lush and playing beautifully after overnight rain.

The greens running true, if a little slow after 20 millimetres of overnight rain.

Owen Robertson took out Division One with 80 (10) 70 and Jeff Moran with 88 (16) 31 the winner of Division Two. Ball winners M Steers, P Bath 71, G McMartin, L McMartin, P McCarthy and J Gilbert 72.

The perennial Keith Seeber as the new Club Captain and Vice Captain Ross Wishart presented the day’s Trophies.

Dick Farmer knocked in an allegedly 100 foot putt to collect a payout from the 2 ball competition. Friday Twilight was completed by 28 players with Dot Rule winning on 18 points.

Several players were unable to complete their

rounds due to the deluge and storm.

Next week Wednesday Stableford, Friday Twilight with the 3rd final round of the Captain’s Trophy next Saturday.

Wednesday 26th Australia Day sees the Laurie & Freda Edwards Mixed Foursomes which is an honour board event.

Euroa B grade strikes with early wickets but doesn’t capitalise

By RODNEY JONES IN B grade, Euroa played Karramomus at the Friendlies.

Euroa won the toss and decided to bat.

Late order hitting from Lucas Paul with 50 runs, whilst a solid 46 runs from opener Rodney Jones got Euroa to a competitive total of all out for 157 from 45 overs.

With the ball, Euroa started well with three early wickets, two from Jye Bjorksten and one from Travis Stefanos.

From there Karramomus took to a hold of the game with the next two batsmen both making 50.

Karramomus won easily by 5 wickets in the 39th over.

Euroa will look to bounce back next week when they play Shepparton United at Princess Park in Shepparton.

CRICKET UNDER 14’S U14 Euroa vs Nagambie NAGAMBIE travelled across to Euroa for the U14 match Saturday morning.

After the heavy rain Friday night, the Friendlies ground was great to play on.

Nagambie batted first.

Will Nash batted well and Nagambie were looking good, ending up with 89.

Euroa bowled well with Haimi Wolfenden helping to send the Nagambie batsmen on their way.

All the Euroa bowlers contributed and the fielding was very good with no catches dropped.

Angus Burton managed to grab a very nice catch.

Euroa went into bat and the opening batsman Cale Robertson and Ollie Swain each retired after a sterling innings.

Mid match Euroa started to get worried.

They were running out of batsman and needed 20 runs to win.

Not sure where they were going to get them from when Ollie and Cale returned to the crease.

Cale got the momentum back and Ollie hit the winning runs

Local cycling team’s podium finish at national championship A TEAM of local cyclists have put their best feet forward for the Masters 120 in Ballarat and as a result have come home with third place medals.

Andrew Garrett is a local Euroa Cyclist who, along with his two local teammates Glenn Christensen and Michael Thomson, has been training for over three months to get primed for the national championship.

The event consists of a 32km section, which the boys competed in.

A total of eight teams competed in the Masters 120, most consisting of four riders.

While the section had plenty of elevation and conditions made things difficult as the wind picked up, what

made the boys’ efforts most impressive was that they competed with only three riders, lacking in that extra teammate up their sleeves to slip stream.

Michael, Glen and Andrew were beyond elated to have come in third, and it was a nice surprise to get onto the podium representing the Seymour/Broadford cycling club.

Competing and training two days a week and many solo training runs were the key to their success.

Infections play a card with numbers DUE to losing two rounds early in the season with COVID restrictions, the league decided to commence on Saturday, which as it turned out with a combination of holidays and record COVID infections, several teams struggled to field teams.

One team who did not struggle was Row Ellis and her Euroa Lawn Division A team who took on fourth placed Terip at home with the Terip ladies of Cindy Hayes and Frances Lawrence continuing their great form winning comfortably over Row and Julie Brook.

The Euroa men led by Barry Fischer and Ross Davis stormed back with an 8-5 whilst the women just went down in a tie breaker.

Caid Miller continued his good form winning with Barry then backing it up with Ross.

Rowena paired up with Melinda Creevey to get her afternoon back on track with a good 8-4.

Euroa went on to win two out of three of the mixed to win by nine giving them a much-needed boost up the ladder.

Caid Miller was best player.

Gooram played Avenel White at home with Avenel struggling this year it was a strong victory for Gooram thanks to two Strathbogie men filling in namely Greg Rowe and Marc Carafa.

Gooram won all nine sets and only conceded 15 games on the day.

Chris Ellis outstanding winning 23 of her 24 games.

The match of the division A round was an all-Euroa affair with Marlene Hanrahan’s Moglonemby team versus Jake Hills St Pauls.

In the first mens’ Michael Nolan and Keighan Hicks were too strong for veterans Scott Watson and Bob Furphy and then Scott combined with Scott Meehan of St Pauls to win a great tie breaker

against Michael and emergency Shaun Kelly.

Bob and Scott then took the honours beating Keighan and Shaun 8-4.

The ladies were a tight affair with first blood going to Mogs Robyn Johnson and Sue Vaughan 8-6 over Megan O’Bree and Lily Meehan.

Then Megan along with Gayle Furphy stormed back 8-5 with the last set going to a tie breaker in Lily and Gayle’s favour.

The mixed was hard fought but the experienced couple of St Pauls won all three making the gap too much for Moglonemby.

St Pauls went on to win by 18.

The other match between league leaders Strathbogie and Longwood was cancelled due to a few participants forced into isolation.

In Division B Craig Durkin took his team to Violet Town who are third on the ladder.

Caroline McKellar and Olivia Gall played a great tie breaker against Paula Hales and Peta Welsh but just got pipped whilst Craig and Grant Chaston did the same.

Olivia and Harrison Mills fought back with an 8-6 as did Grant and Lachie Sands 8-4.

Although they were the only two sets won by Euroa Ranges, it was a tight afternoon nonetheless with only 13 games separating the teams.

There are two great games next week when Gooram head up the hill to face Strathbogie and Longwood Lawn are at home to Terip.
