PARTICIPATION in community sport was heavily impacted by COVID-19 and new research shows that small-town Victoria suffered more than most other areas.

New Federation and Victoria University research shows that more than 230,000 players left their clubs across Victoria in 2020, a decline of about 27 per cent from 2019.

But among the state’s 40 least populated and most remote regional communities, memberships plummeted by about 44 per cent.

In the Strathbogie Shire, there was an astounding decline in participation rates between 2019 and 2020.

After participation rates of 15.32 per cent in 2019, the number dropped to 8.89 per cent in 2020.

This 41 per cent decrease highlights a shocking drop that impacted several sports clubs and organisations in the region.

Longwood Football Netball Club president, Rick Shiner, said his club had a very difficult couple of years.

“It’s been hard to attract players at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve done it pretty hard

The drop has not been felt across all sports in the region, with some sides continuing to thrive following COVID. Euroa Football Netball Club president Scott Watson said the Magpies had mostly seen healthy registration across its senior sides, although there were occasional issues with junior participation, even before COVID. “With senior footy we field four football and five netball teams every weekend for 18 weeks and then hopefully finals,” he said.

“Our numbers have remained healthy across the teams but it’s not all been easy.

“Under 18 footy struggles the most and we currently only have 14 players in the standard age bracket for that side.

“We’ve been able to make up for it with some permitted over-age players and some from the younger years that have to play twice a week.

Haines makes energy proposal for Indi INDEPENDENT candidate for Indi Helen Haines has said her proposal to upgrade home appliances and make it cheaper to install batteries would save the average household up to $5000 a year and boost the economy of North East Victoria by almost $300 million every year.

The proposal, which Dr Haines tabled in parliament in February, would slash the cost of home batteries by up $3000 and would offer $5000 zero-interest loans to households wanting to install solar, batteries, or ultra-efficient electrical heating systems and appliances.

“In the last few months, we

have seen the cost-of-living skyrocket - petrol hit $2 a litre and wholesale electricity costs in Victoria are up 141 per cent,” Dr Haines said.

“We need to see real plans to help get those costs down quickly, and that’s what I’m putting forward.

“If you’re feeling the pinch from higher prices and bigger bills, then my plan is for you - it’s about making your life easier.

“I want to see the government get behind this plan for lower power bills.

“The choice this election is for someone who has real ideas to deal with the cost of living crisis, and that’s exactly what I

am putting forward.”

Dr Haines visited the home of Wangaratta resident Peter Gotham, who is saving over $700 a year having installed a battery system, to spruik the cost savings her plan would unlock for local households.

“We’ve had solar for years and we put the battery in six weeks ago and already we’re saving about $2 a day in power bills,” he said.

“Our battery cost $16,000 which is out of reach for most people.

“Helen is proposing to make batteries cheaper so more people can install them and start saving money, and that’s a great thing.”

Dr Haines said that under her plan, people would start to see savings from day one.

“It costs on average $2 per day to heat an average household with gas, compared to just 90 cents per day using an electric heat pump,” she said.

“The cold weather is coming, and people here in Indi know how important those heating bills are.

“The cost of hot water for an average shower is 66 cents with gas hot water and just 30 cents with electric hot water.

“Under my plan, every time you have a shower, you’d be saving money.”

Haines’ proposal was described in February as the

“world’s best” home energy policy by Australian adviser to US President Joe Biden and energy entrepreneur Saul Griffith.

With inflation hitting 5.1 per cent and no end in sight, Haines said the government should be taking real action to cut the cost of living for households.

“Cutting the fuel excise for six months was good,” she said.

“But the government has no long-term plan, the best time for the government to really invest in lowering household power bills was five years ago.

“The second best time is today.”

Across the electorate of Indi, Haines said that generating, storing, and using power locally would deliver a massive boost to the local economy.

“The average household spends $5000 a year on its power, gas and petrol bills,” she said.

“The vast bulk of that immediately leaves our community and goes to companies in the city or overseas.

“With just over 58,000 households in Indi, that is almost $300 million that is being sucked out of the region’s economy every year and going straight to power companies.

“My plan would keep more of that money locally.”

From page 1 “It seems to be a cohort specific challenge from year to year, some years the under 18s will win grand finals and other years we can’t field a side.

“It does seem that there might not be enough under 18s in the shire to field teams across all the towns.

“Regardless, the club continues to support that particular age group with the coaching staff and parent support and involve them in all our activities.”

Mr Watson also said that despite data showing lower participation numbers in the shire, the community support had been top notch.

“We’ve been delighted with the community support for the club and the number of sponsors, volunteers and people at

the games has been great,” he said.

Melinda Watson from Basketball Euroa said there were still strong participation numbers across the sport, although there were still some concerns.

“We were able to maintain, if not, improve numbers in most age groups,” she said.

“We had around 130 juniors and lots of new players.

“There was certainly a lot of enthusiasm from the players, but some parents may have been more reluctant.

“I am particularly concerned about participation drop off for girls, our ladies numbers have declined.”

Despite the drop-off in participation for the girls, Ms Watson was thrilled with the community spirit being shown in town.

“I feel really proud of our Euroa kids,” she said.

“As a small town we punch above our weight in the area of sports.

“When our basketball returned this season there was genuine joy and a fantastic vibe, to be back after a long time stuck at home.

“I think sports is a big part of our social fabric as country people and there is a deeply engrained appreciation of the development, enjoyment and social benefits of participation.”

The study was led by Professors Rochelle Eime and Hans Westerbeek and examined membership records for the state’s top ten community sports including Australian Rules football, basketball, cricket, netball, swimming, and tennis at all 79

Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Data revealed the lowest participation rates and highest drop-out rates were among Victoria’s 40 small-town LGAs that are located outside of main regional cities such as Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.

Professor Eime said the results are surprising due to the significance that community sport has in regional towns.

“Given there are fewer other leisure-time activities in regional and rural areas compared to major cities, the absence of sport will have negatively affected regional communities more than those in metropolitan areas,” she said.

She said this means that now, more than ever, clubs need to make joining affordable to bring players back.

Lake Nagambie touted as games’ rowing venue

By GUS RIDDER TANIA Maxwell, Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party member for Northern Victoria, has asked tourism, sport and major events minister Martin Pakula to consider the inclusion of rowing on Lake Nagambie as a Commonwealth Games 2026 sport.

Ms Maxwell said the government had overlooked much of the region when allocating the Commonwealth Games.

“Northern Victoria covers more than 100,500 square kilometres, around half of the state,” she said.

“There are 27 local government areas in my electorate, and yet only one of those, Bendigo, has been earmarked so far as a venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“While the multi-city model is worthy of credit, much of my electorate has been overlooked to date.”

Ms Maxwell also highlighted the need for rowing to be added to the events, saying that it was perfectly reasonable to do so.

“Sixteen core sports and four para-sports have so far been agreed between the State of

Fatal collision at Violet Town MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a fatal collision in Violet Town.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway southbound to reports of the collision involving two trucks just after 12am on Tuesday.

Sadly, the driver of one of the vehicles, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

Traffic was diverted from the Violet Town exit for several hours while investigators assess the scene.

“Around 2000 athletes competed, and Strathbogie Shire and Lake Nagambie showcased themselves with high honours.”

Ms Maxwell recognised the Strathbogie Shire as a fantastic area that should be included in discussions.

“Strathbogie Shire is a great tourism destination with fabulous food and wine offerings, well-established agriculture and equine industries, beautiful landscapes and wonderful potential,” she said.

“The mayor and council of Strathbogie have reached out to me for help to ask the government to consider flatwater rowing as an additional 2026 Commonwealth Games sport and to nominate Lake Nagambie as the location to host this event.

“This is an absolute no-brainer for the government, and I know Nagambie and the Strathbogie shire would do Victoria proud in hosting a great rowing event.”

Lyman aims for Australia’s top 10 to attract new business to Indi LIBERAL candidate for Indi, Ross Lyman, said he will make North East Victoria a corridor of strategic importance if he is elected Saturday week.

New addition to grading program

COUNCIL has added a new grader to its fleet to help undertake their grading program.

The new John Deere grader will be responsible for maintaining almost 1500km of gravel roads in the Strathbogie Shire.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said Council’s Road Management Plan outlines the road maintenance and inspection requirements.

“If the condition of those

roads is outside pre-determined defect levels, they are prioritised and programmed for maintenance,” Cr Binks said.

“The new machine is one of three graders employed by council to work across roads on rotation.”

Cr Binks said community members could visit www. strathbogie.vic.gov.au to view a list of roads being graded and the expected timeframe the grader will

be working on those roads.

“The program schedule is dependent on weather and other factors and can be subject to change,” she said.

Labor candidate backs 5% minimum wage rise LABOR’S candidate for Indi, Nadia David, strongly supports Opposition leader, Anthony Albanese’s, push for a five per cent increase to the minimum wage.

“This is a no-brainer,” Ms David said.

“The least paid workers in our community are the ones doing it the hardest.

“They are the cleaners, care workers and retail workers who kept turning up during the pandemic.

“Their wages have gone backwards over the nine years and a five per cent bump to the minimum wage would bring them only to parity with inflation.”

Mr Albanese first backed a five per cent minimum wage rise on Tuesday when asked by journalists.

Since that time, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has claimed businesses wouldn’t be able to afford it and it would have a negative impact on inflation.

“This is just fantasy from Mr Morrison,” Ms David said.

“Businesses are doing better than ever and making more profits and have more confidence in the economy.

“Business failure rates are the lowest they’ve been in decades.

“It’s time businesses shared a tiny portion of their profit with the workers who gave it to them.

“I trust that they (commission) will make a decision in the best interests of all Australians,” she said.

Liberals’ candidate for Indi, Ross Lyman, said actions by Mr Albanese appearing to “pressure the independent umpire were both unprecedented and irresponsible”.

“The Morrison Government supports the independence of the Fair Work Commission to make its wage decision...it is the role of the government to provide a comprehensive submission, backed and informed by Treasury analysis, that enables the Fair Work Commission to consider a range of economic conditions in making their decision.”

Nationals’ candidate for Indi, Liz Fisher, had a similar position, and said the worrying rise in the cost of living was driven by a number of complex issues.

“Simply increasing wages doesn’t solve the problem and may contribute to higher costs of living if raising wages alone is the

only solution,” she said.

Indi Greens’ candidate Benjamin Gilbert backed his party leader Adam Bandt’s support for a rise in the minimum wage, something both the ACCI and the ACTU are calling for.

He said the Greens believe the best way to make Australia more egalitarian is to lift the minimum wage, raise Newstart and invest in universal services like health and education.

Liberal Democrats’ Indi candidate Julian Fidge said his party supports the commission in determining the competing claims for wage rises between the unions and businesses.

He said his party is committed to increased incomes for working people, and would “increase the income tax threshold to $40,000, and reduce tax to a flat rate of 20 per cent, increasing basic income by an average of $9000 per year”.

Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party Indi candidate Lachlan O’Connell said he supports a wage increase, particularly for nurses and aged care workers, but it’s up to the commission.

“They are supposed to be independent,” he said.

Other Indi candidates Angel Aleksov (Animal Justice Party), Stephen Williams (United Australia Party) and Beth Stevens (One Nation) were not available prior to going to press.

Friendlies upgrade possible thanks to generous donation

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Friendly Societies Oval has received a generous donation thanks to Libby Woodhouse, something that will help maintain the beautiful grounds.

Libby Woodhouse kindly donated a 1985 two-door Mercedes Coupe that was owned by her late husband, Peter.

The car was at Murphy’s Motors and Tyres for a deep clean, with the garage generously allowing the use of the power washer to get the old Mercedes into immaculate condition.

It has now been sold to a collector for $4050, with all of that going to the Friendlies for the purchase of a new mower.

Rob Asquith, a driving force behind the Friendlies operations, said it was a facility that deserved to be looked after and appreciated.

“It is the oldest sports ground in Euroa,” he said.

“The biggest thing from the town point of view is that it’s the entry.

“It creates a nice entry for those coming into Euroa, it’s the first thing that you see.”

Mr Asquith said that there have been constant fundraising efforts and a push towards coun-

“We have been fundraising to upgrade the facilities, in particular we want to add female bathrooms to make everyone feel more comfortable,” he said.

“This money in particular will get us a new mower to maintain the ovals and the surrounding

areas around the clubhouse.

“The public has been a huge help with fundraising and to get us where we are, especially Libby.

“Our driving force is to encourage the shire to assist is by maintaining it and keeping it looking good.

“We are always trying to get

them involved and to recognise how great the oval can be.

“It can be a real destination.”

Libby Woodhouse said that she was very glad that the money would be going towards the Friendlies.

“Peter always thought that this wonderful oval was important to the town,” she said.

I don’t fully trust any government, and I want to be represented by someone who will be truly independent.

It is a real blessing to have someone who is also articulate and caring, and capable of drafting a proposed bill for an Independent Commission against Corruption, when Scott Morrison failed to meet his commitment to provide one (even a watered-down one).

Helen Haines would make a better Prime Minister than either Scott Morrison or Anthony Albanese.

If only that were possible.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Liberal adverts against Haines miss their mark I WAS challenged this week by an advertisement in the Gazette, authorised by Liberal Party Senator, Jane Hume, which seems to suggest that Helen Haines is quite different to what Cathy McGowan was, and is perhaps, not truly independent.

If this is the case, then it is important.

The prima facie ‘evidence’ that is offered is a comparison of one selected year for each person.

Why not full three-year records?

Helen Haines is ‘shown’ to have voted “80 per cent of the time with Labor/Greens.”

On the other hand, Helen Haines claims to have voted in her three year term “48 per cent of the time with the Government and 48 per cent with Opposition on legislation, and 95 per cent of the time against gag orders.”

How does this stack up to the standards of both, an independent member, and a good local representative?

I certainly wouldn’t expect that a good local member would support proposed

THE Probus meeting from Tuesday, April 26 welcomed guest speaker Ron Lee to discuss stories about ‘travelling by air without reservations’.

The title could not have prepared the audience for the adventures they were going to hear.

Mr Lee himself has lived in Euroa for 20 years and is an active Probus member, he’s known as a man of many interests and is now writing a history.

However, Mr Lee has travelled regularly since his 20s and has seen the changes.

He remembers that in the 1950s and 60s, security at airports was very different.

Airports were more open, the aircrafts were smaller, the trips were longer and there were far fewer passengers.

There were certainly no computerised reservations.

Mr Lee spoke about his introduction to New Guinea through his boss when he began to work as an architect with an airline.

It was the first of many trips to a place that he loves.

From that point on, he was required to attend meetings all over the world, often with no direct connecting flights.

His mantras during these trips became ‘If I couldn’t get the whole way, go as far as I

Mr Lee discussed his avid stamp collection and how he travelled to an Ameri-

can Philatelic Convention in Pittsburgh.

On those flights, there were very few dramas according to Mr Lee, besides some turbulence and a dangerous taxi ride through Moscow.

Probus members eagerly asked questions and shared their own reminiscences about aircraft and memorable flights.

In thanking Ron, they invited him back to show slides from his travel adventures.

Nationals candidate backs government tourism plan THE Nationals Candidate for Indi, Liz Fisher, has welcomed the Liberal and Nationals Government’s plan for a strong economy and stronger future.

Under the plan, the government will invest $15 million to make up to $100,000 in matched funding available for small to medium-sized wineries, distilleries and beer producers for the construction or upgrade of cellar door or tourism-associated facilities such as restaurants, tour facilities and viewing platforms.

An additional $5 million will

also be provided through the wine, spirits and craft breweries tourism events program to provide up to $100,000 to tourism and local government organisations to create new events and experiences to attract tourists and showcase wineries, distilleries and craft beer makers.

Ms Fisher said local wineries, breweries and distilleries do an outstanding job in putting the region on the map.

“This new investment will help to boost our local economy by bringing even more tourists

to the area,” she said.

“We have some of the best, world-class wineries distilleries and breweries in north-east Victoria.

“Now, more visitors and tourists will come here and enjoy our beautiful region while helping support our wonderful local businesses.

“A strong economy means our government has cut taxes for tourism operators while investing more in promoting our country, building the infrastructure that improves the visitor

experience and protecting the environment that helps drive tourist demand.

“This announcement builds on the Liberal and Nationals’ strong track record in reducing the small business company rate to 25 per cent and supporting local businesses with new technology and training tax offsets.

DESIGNEUROA, in conjunction with Village Well, is hosting an interactive Feet on the Street walking workshop or ‘walkshop’ on Saturday, June 4 from 11:30am to 2:00pm.

The walk will commence at the post office and continue through both Binney Street and Railway Street.

The intention of the event is to collect as many ideas as possible to activate Binney Street and beyond to put together a collective vision for a more inspiring, dynamic and lively Euroa.

The walkshop will take a non-traditional format, featuring local food vendors and artists to showcase some of Euroa’s existing talent and assets.

This is an all-ages event and encourages everyone to come along with an open mind, armed with many ideas.

Strathbogie Shire Council asked DESIGNEuroa to help with the re-activation of Binney Street, which is how the hugely popular ‘beach’ and ‘pocket park’ came about.

A later installation of the bush garden continues to draw positive feedback on ways to bring recreation and art into our retail spaces.

Covid restrictions forced local communities and local government to think differently about street interactions and the State Government stepped in to offer funding for outdoor dining etc.

EUROA Health will highlight the important work carried out by volunteers during National Volunteer Week, May 16 - 22.

National Volunteer Week is a chance for all of us to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you.

Euroa Health has a rich legacy of volunteerism.

Volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone.

Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter discussed the importance of volunteers at their facilities.

“As we celebrate and thank our volunteers, we will remember that their unpaid work is the glue that makes our services at the Hospital and GraniteHill Aged Care function,” she said.

The theme for National Volunteer Week for 2022 is ‘Better Together’.

And this rings true at Euroa Health as, together, through volunteering, they are helping our community for the better.

Fiona Chamberlain, the head of community services spoke on the impact volunteers had at Euroa Health.

Helen Heathcote recognised for her volunteer work in Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT NATIONAL Volunteer Week is celebrated this week throughout Australia.

Thousands of volunteers come from all walks of life, every nationality, and many provide cultural and community contributions on a daily basis.

Where would our schools, hostels, hospitals, churches, sports teams, community houses, clubs local groups or charities or in fact our country or world be without volunteers?

They need to be treated with respect and gratitude.

Volunteers are valuable assets to many organisations and should be appreciated as they save the workplace millions in time, effort and funds.

This year Helen Heathcote of Nagambie is to be recognised for all the many years she has contributed too many groups and the local school in Nagambie.

Helen is a fitting volunteer to be acknowledged in 2022 for her tireless work which she loves doing for her community.

Helen has worked for Nagambie PS (NPS) for over 35 years.

In that time she has volunteered on the Parents and Friends committee and even though her children have grown up and now have

children of their own Helen continues to help out their P & F for special events and volunteers behind the scenes with the school’s fundraising raffles.

Helen also runs Nagambie PS’s Breakfast Club program.

This sees Helen preparing more than just breakfast.

In this role she is a mentor for students who assist her in running the program, a friendly face to greet you every day and also a great person to have a chat with as well as providing nutritious meals for all students.

She volunteers her time to prepare everything that is required to run this program smoothly.

Helen also is the Nagambie PS catering manager.

She cooks and provides meals and items for sale each week for their students.

The preparation for this is also managed after hours.

For many years Helen has coordinated the school’s grade 6 graduation each year which is so exciting.

From the setup, organising of catering and decorations every balloon and sparkle of glitter ensures the grade 6 students, staff and families have a wonderful farewell to the grade 6 student’s primary schooling.

Helen also volunteers

for the school’s KidsMatter student well-being program where she volunteers to provide an activity that promotes teamwork, confidence and skill-building for students.

The activities vary from craft to cooking and everything in between.

Helen managed the canteen for five years with Greg her husband for the Tabilk Junior Football Club.

When Helen is not at NPS weaving her magic you will find this Life Member at the Nagambie Football and Netball Club where she volunteers as the canteen manager.

She has worked in this capacity for over 13 years.

Throw in coordinating Thursday meals for all players and we wonder if Helen sleeps at all.

This past Anzac Day, Helen assisted me with photos of the Anzac Day march and ceremony at the cenotaph because of my camera problem.

She is a keen photographer and I thank her for her support that day and many other times she has set up school photos for me to cover for the paper.

Appreciating Euroa’s selfless volunteers

By GUS RIDDER WITH this week being National Volunteers Week, it is fitting to recognise the generosity and community spirit within Euroa.

Volunteering is a significant part of the Euroa community, with one attendee at a University of the Third Age meeting recently calling it “the volunteering town”.

Sports clubs, schools, churches and shops are all regularly helped by community members donating their time and effort into making sure things run smoothly.

Events in town such as the Euroa Show, farmers markets and more also rely on the hard-work of volunteers.

The Already Read bookshop on Binney Street is staffed entirely by volunteers who are tasked with everything from customer service to cleaning the books.

Bernice McKinn is one of many volunteers that offer their time to help the bookstore and spoke about what it means to her.

“We all work to keep the shop open seven days a week,” she said.

“There are 30 of us that all volunteer and work a few hours each.

“It’s a lot of work but we raise a lot of money and make sure the shop is open for visitors and locals.

“We’ve got a lot of regular people who call in on the way from long car drives and they will drop things.

“We even have a dog that sits in with us to help and I think a lot of people just come in to see him.

“A lot of people love the store and we get a lot of compliments.”

The Euroa Tourist Hub is another feature of Binney Street that relies on the kindness and hard-work of volunteers.

Christine John and Michael Bell are two volunteers who are happy to be a part of such a giving community.

“We usually have two people working at a time,” Ms John said.

“We do what we can to help tourists and locals, providing advice and local knowledge of the town.

“It’s also a great social spot for some people who may feel isolated and want some people to talk with.

“We have a large group of volunteers who rotate so we all feel like we’re helping out.”

The Bowerbird Op-Shop is another well-known volunteering hub in the middle of town, with volunteers helping at the front desk, in the store, sorting items and out the back with furniture.

Long-term volunteer, Nola Dudley, spoke about the importance of the help that the community provides at the Bowerbird.

“It’s a great bunch of people here,” she said.

“We’ve raised approximately one and a half million dollars since starting in 2008.

“The community has been fantastic, dropping their items in to the shop.

“The money raised makes sure Euroa Health gets aged-care equipment that they need.

“We do a lot more than just the shop too when it comes to volunteering.

“Church services at GraniteHill, singing, whatever we can do to help out.”

Euroa certainly has a giving spirit, with volunteering a major part of the fabric of the town.

VIEW club wants volunteers THE Shepparton Day VIEW Club is calling on members of the community to consider volunteering for children’s education charity, The Smith Family, as part of National Volunteer Week.

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s organisation with close to 300 clubs across Australia, all dedicated to supporting children in need with their education through The Smith Family.

Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness, and volunteering.

One of the key themes for National Volunteer Week this year is about bringing people together through volunteering, which Shepparton Day VIEW Club president Susanne Wright said is more important than ever before.

“Last year, COVID meant we couldn’t have that hands-on connection with the community, which was really hard for a lot of people,” she said.

“Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families.”

Members of Shepparton Day VIEW Club volunteer for The Smith Family by hosting Bunnings barbecues and holding trivia days to raise funds for our sponsored students.

Ms Wright encouraged people to get involved across the region.

“There are many opportunities for people to help out,” she said.

“We are always looking for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW.” The Smith Family’s chief executive officer Doug Taylor said that volunteers have played a vital role in delivering much-needed support for its work during a particularly disruptive period.

“It’s been a tumultuous year with the impacts of COVID-19 and most recently, the devastating weather conditions across Queensland and New South Wales affecting so many Australians,” Mr Taylor said.

“We are very grateful to all VIEW members for continuing to donate their time and energy throughout these times.

“And while volunteering provides a fantastic opportunity to give back, it’s also about building a community and support network that makes such a positive difference to everyone involved,” he added.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS FEEDBACK WANTED: The National Horse Traceability Working Group wants to hear from those in the horse industry.

Feedback wanted from horse industry THE National Horse Traceability Working Group (NHTWG) is seeking feedback regarding design and introduction of a traceability system for horses, donkeys and mules in Australia.

The NHTWG has agreed that the establishment of a base level traceability system as a starting point would best suit the needs of stakeholders and help ensure the industry can respond quickly to a biosecurity incident or emergency animal disease outbreak.

The NHTWG is proposing a National Horse Traceability System (NHTS) that utilises the existing framework and incorporates incremental improvements.

These include refreshing and maturing the PIC system managed by states and territories, introducing uniform national PIC business rules, enabling enforcement of PIC legislation and requiring base level movement information to be recorded by all sectors of the horse industry.

All sectors of the horse industry are invited to provide feedback on the proposed business rules.

The consultation period closes on Wednesday, May 25.

BUDGET SHORTCOMINGS: The Victorian Farmers Federation says farmers and regional roads have been snubbed in the recently released state budget.

State budget ignores farmers pandemic pain

By GUS RIDDER FARMERS have been left out of the Victorian Government’s pandemic repair plan in the State Budget handed down by Treasurer Tim Pallas according to the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF).

VFF President Emma Germano said the Treasurer’s speech failed to mention agriculture as one of Victoria’s key export industries and was ignoring the 21,000 farm businesses that play a vital role in the state’s economy.

“Agriculture plays a vital role in keeping Victoria’s economy moving and the investment in the services and infrastructure we need and deserve is totally underwhelming,” she said.

COVID-19 UPDATE

“Farmers have helped to keep Victoria alive through the pandemic and now that we are approaching the other side, we can’t be treated as an afterthought.”

Ms Germano stated she was bitterly disappointed in the budget’s failure to address regional Victoria’s crumbling road network.

“This is yet another budget that fails to address the chronic underfunding of Victoria’s regional road network,” she said.

“Farmers will be expecting substantial investment in our sector and in our communities in the leadup to November’s State election.

“We will be demanding a fair go for all of regional Victoria.”

The lack of funding towards the regional road network is shared

by Member for Euroa and shadow minister for roads, Steph Ryan.

“This latest cut to the roads budget is a reflection on a tired city-centric Labor Government that’s completely out of touch with everyday Victorians,” Ms Ryan said.

“It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a completely city-centric government isn’t aware of the dangerous deterioration of our roads under their watch.

“No matter where you go across the state, roads are crumbling and potted with holes.

“Some are now downright dangerous.

“The Andrews Government’s solution is to reduce speed limits and waste money on temporary

signage rather than actually fixing roads.

“Strong investment in roads is not a big ask of a government that is happy to let tens of billions of dollars disappear through wasteful cost blowouts and project mismanagement in Melbourne.”

The VFF noted there were some positive signs in what they believe was an otherwise underwhelming budget.

“We are pleased the government listened to our calls on the importance of securing our supply chains with an additional $30 million for the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund and $40 million for the Victorian Industry Investment Fund,” Ms Germano said.

Euroa Third Age facade lift THERE have been some alterations to the front of the club that you may notice if you happen to walk past.

The Third Age Club thanks the Euroa Men’s Shed for making and installing the glass fronted cabinet which will contain the list of activities taking place at the club.

At the April monthly meeting,

the club decided to return to a general meeting each month, rather than every two months.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 1:30pm.

All members are welcome, so come along and find out what is being planned for the future and catch up with some friends you haven’t seen in some time.

The football/netball club is looking for some volunteers to help out at their canteen on market days.

During the playing season, all the players and staff are away and so they need others to assist.

IN good news for regional foodies and wine lovers, Tastes of the Goulburn is set to return this October.

After COVID-19 forced a hiatus in 2021, planning for one of the Goulburn Valley’s most popular events is once again in full swing just in time to celebrate the event’s 20th year of running.

Tastes committee spokesperson Nina Stocker said they and the committee were excited to be bringing the best of the region to Seymour’s streets once again.

IN the first quarter Euroa started strongly, with some phenomenal shooting from goalers Maddy Murray and Demi Walker.

Up the other end of the court defenders Mary Frewen and Alita White were working hard, rebounding well and keeping the scores to 12 - 10 Euroa’s way.

In the second quarter the girls came out fighting with Kalarni Anderson, Mahony Fothergill and Elle Sanders feeding the ball cleverly down the court.

Demi and Maddy continued to shoot accurately in the ring.

Euroa taking the lead with the scores 25 - 16.

In the third quarter Alita and Kalarni applied the pressure on the Cats midcourt, making it hard for Mooroopna to score.

Up the other end of the court Meg Walker was doing some great feeding into the goal ring.

At the final break, the scores were 29 - 23 Euroa’s way.

Meg began the fourth quarter as she had finished the third, passing the ball very well into Maddy and Elle in the goals.

The Frewen sisters, Mary and Laura, combined very impressively in defence, the circle a blur of long arms, long legs and beaming smiles.

The Frewens worked in unison to keep Mooroopna’s scoring opportunities low, despite the mounting pressure that a close game of netball inevitably brings.

The Magpies managed to maintain their composure, win their second game of the season- a fitting way to celebrate Mary Frewen’s 50th senior game in emphatic style.

ALTHOUGH the official bowling season has finished for 2021/22 there are some keen bowlers who come to the club when the weather is suitable to have a game of social bowls.

On Wednesday, May 4 12 bowlers played pairs and winners were Richard Noble, Kevin Milner, then on Saturday, May 7 again 12 bowlers came along and winners of the pairs competition were Tony Kingma, Ray Day. Saturday, May 14 20 players enjoyed bowling and winners were Barry Hatchman and Anne Sutcliffe.

Play will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays if the weather is suitable.

A reminder that the annual general meeting is on Wednesday, May 25 at 7pm and the present board would like to see a good attendance.

UNDER 17 FOR the first 15 minutes of play on Saturday at Mooroopna, the U17 Magpies clearly demonstrated that they could match it with the stronger sides in the competition.

The Euroa girls were poised.

They were faultless.

NOTHING BUT NET: Euroa’s goalers put their all into Saturday’s matches against Mooroopna to come home victorious.

They were bloody near perfect.

At the first break the Magpies were level with the much-fancied Mooroopna Cats, and then the wheels fell off.

For the next two quarters, what had initially seemed so easy became increasingly harder and harder. Passing was inaccurate, poor decisions were made and fundamental skills went missing.

The only thing that did not stop was the team’s effort.

Constant encouragement from Megan O’Bree and Katy Frewen has been a trademark of the 2022 season to date, with both coaches able to provide positive, specific feedback to the team for four quarters every week.

It was exactly the same on Saturday, except there was so much more for them to talk about.

Meg Walker, Hannah Kubeil, Abby Harrison and Lily Meehan were relentless through the mid court, battling hard to direct the ball down the court and into attack, and then battling just as hard to retrieve it when things went awry.

Molly Redfern, golden tan glowing, and Sienna Trotter were tough in the goal circle, and will probably have the bruises to prove it later in the week.

A much better fourth quarter allowed the team to regain some confidence in themselves and their game, with strong defensive efforts from Laura Frewen, Millie Watson and Chloe Salter seeing a number of intercepts and turnovers, resulting in much needed Magpie goals It was a disappointing end to a game that had started with so much promise, but in the end, it is only a game.

The Magpies continue to show improvement each week, they are a tight knit, close unit, and they are fully aware of the need to put together four quarters of the standard of netball they are very capable of producing.

Maybe next week.

The Magpies were working to keep the scores close, with everyone off to a great start.

It was Mooroopna with a six

goal lead at the first break.

In the second quarter Irish Anderson and Marnie Salter were doing what they do best, working hard in the mid court to get the ball down to the shooters and keep it away from the menacing Cats. Despite the team’s best efforts, Mooroopna slowly and steadily continued to extend their lead.

In the third quarter everyone worked well together.

Maggie Pittock, in defence was trying absolutely everything to stop the ball from entering Mooroopna’s attack.

At the other end of the court, Ella Hill and Tess Walker in goals working just as hard to escape the close attention of the Cats defence.

The Magpies continued to work hard, with the defence trying to stop as many goals as they could, mid court transitioning the ball down the court and the goalers working the ball around and shooting.

In the end, it was simply a very hard day at the office for the Magpies, and one they will need to put behind them as they prepare for next week’s tough encounter against Kyabram.

Sunday competition netballers take on Yea EUROA UNDER 15 SUNDAY TEAM THE under 15 Euroa Magpies met ladder leaders Yea at Yea on Sunday.

From the first whistle it was clear this was going to be a hard-fought encounter with both sides throwing all they had at the contest.

The Magpies trailed all game but had a magnificent third quarter where they piled on 13 goals to Yea’s six and narrowed the margin to just four goals.

But the home-side steadied and managed to run away with a comfortable victory, winning by 10 goals.

Best: Caitlin Crowe, Ella Hill, Maggie Pittock.

Final Score Euroa 26 Yea 36.

EUROA UNDER 13 SUNDAY TEAM THE under 13’s Sunday netball side remains undefeated after another impressive performance

against the Yea Tigers at Yea on Sunday.

After a shaky start, the girls settled and put in a brilliant second quarter where goalies Lily Asquith (GA) and Grace McKellar (GS) piled on nine goals to give the Magpies an eight goal lead going into half-time.

Jade Raleigh was again solid as a rock in defence and was given plenty of support through the middle of the court from Avie Hill (C) and Zahara Johns (WA).

Best: Avie Hill, Zahara Johns, Jade Raleigh.

Final Score Euroa 25-Yea 12.

EUROA UNDER 11 SUNDAY TEAM

By SCOTT EMBLING THE under 11s travelled to sunny Yea for what was a great contest between the two clubs.

The first quarter was a very tight affair however after a few minutes

the girls were on the board thanks to Grace Burden, passing to Ivy Burden who then found ‘surprise surprise’ Charlotte Burden who converted nicely.

Evie Buchanan was great in GK directing the ball in the right direction.

As the siren sounded for the end of the first quarter the score was four goals each.

A great effort by both sides.

Asha Embling found the goal ring on numerous occasions during the second quarter.

This was off the back of some great defence from Audrey Anderson as Captain for the day and Leila Thompson who stopped everything that came their way.

With the help of the entire team Euroa finished the first half nine goals to four.

In the third quarter Yea were everywhere as ball was going up and down the court like a yoyo

with a competitive quarter by both teams observed by a very vocal crowd.

Mia Holmes had a great quarter in mid court finding the ball and moving it to the goals.

Euroa held on to a slight lead of 11 to eight, setting up for what would be a solid final quarter.

The last quarter was one of the best quarters of netball I have watched this year.

All the girls delivered an outstanding team effort.

They were challenged all game but delivered a win for our two coaches Maggie and Caitlin, who are doing a great job.

The final score 13 to 11.

Next week we travel to Broadford which again will be another good challenge for our Under 11 Magpies.

Junior netballers defeat Cats UNDER 11 NETBALL First quarter A WET and miserable day for our under 11 team to take to the court.

Euroa started out well with some great work from willow to get the first goal to Euroa shot by Ellie.

The centre girls Isla And Lara were trying hard.

Willow scored Euroa’s second goal.

Grace Hill and Maisy were working hard in defence with some great intercepts.

Score7-0 Second quarter The girls bonding well together and good team play helped Euroa to get another goal from Ellie to start the quarter.

Lara was playing well in the centre with Grace Eddy and Isla moving the ball with good passes.

Grace and Maisy were playing well together in defence.

Score 9-0 Third quarter Our defence girls Maisy and Grace Hill started this quarter off well resulting in another goal to Euroa from Ellie.

Grace Eddy also howled for Euroa and was super proud of herself.

The centre girls still trying hard in wet conditions.

Score 12-0 Fourth quarter Euroa started this last quarter off well with girls looking very wet.

The courts were slippery.

Lara was playing well, intercepting lots of balls and was supported by Grace Eddy and Isla.

Maisy did some great defending with her tall off sider Grace Hill supporting her to keep Mooroopna from scoring.

It was great to see the opposition Cats score only two goals in this quarter.

Grace Eddy and Ellie worked hard in our goals to bring our end result to a win.

Was a great team effort by all Euroa girls.

In poor conditions they all played so well as team and thanks to Kim for coaching our girls, what a great coach and role model they have.

Wake up call for Towners KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS STANHOPE delivered a huge wake up call to the visitors on Saturday, from start to finish the home side dominated a very lacklustre and disappointing Violet Town.

Fresh from a great win the previous week, the Towners were expected to give a good account of themselves and ce-

ment their spot in the top four.

Only a handful of players could hold their heads high, Fintan Brazil was best afield, he dominated all day showing the way to no avail.

Jimmy Herring was the best defender; against the tide he was a standout down back.

Others to try hard all day were Lach Baldwin, Ollie Ford and the skipper Ryan Jennings.

Josh Mellington continues his fine season, kicking all of the team’s six goals despite treatment from the opposition.

The bye this week couldn’t come quick enough, a chance to reflect and reset for the following week’s clash with Nagambie in front of a huge double reunion flag celebration.

The 1982 and 2012 premiership sides will reunite

in what will be a great day for the club.

Benalla take top spot in winter tennis competition

By RHONDA CARPENTER BENALLA hosted Mansfield Black, who had travelled across for another superb day of sunshine and sublime tennis on the lawn for the opening round of winter competition.

Mansfield Black’s Anna Speirs and Di Ellis were in for the long haul in their opening set against Benalla’s Kate Campbell and Clare Sharp.

Taking it to a tiebreak at seven games all, and unsure that it was over, Speirs and Ellis served it out to win the tie 8-6 in what was to be Black’s only set for the day.

Benalla’s Deb Siggers and Wendy Maxwell outplayed their opponents, Rhonda Carpenter and Di Bergelin, to win comfortably 8-3, on the adjacent superbly prepared court.

Benalla delivered a masterclass on the grass giving Black plenty to reflect on.

They won five sets 47 games to one set 23 games in an enjoyable contest.

Back at home, Mansfield Blue took on Moglonemby showing them how to play the synthetic.

Mansfield Blue’s Michelle Pigdon and Belinda Cipa controlled their opening set against Moglonemby’s Marlene Hanrahan and Robyn Johnson defeating them 8-2.

Benalla’s Wendy Maxwell, Deb Siggers, Kate Campbell, and Clare Sharp enjoyed their win.

Terip hosted Euroa for their grand final rematch in another close encounter of the third kind like the 2019 grand finale.

Mary Dewis watched the intense action.

Making up for lost court time these past two years, the pairings squeezed as much tennis as they could out of their openers.

High quality tennis throughout the day included two lop-sided sets, a Terip fightback and ultimately only two games separated the teams.

The result was three sets each, but Terip won the day 37 games to 35.

Benalla took top spot on the ladder with nine points, Mansfield Blue second also on nine points, Terip third with seven and Euroa fourth with three points.

Next week Benalla travel to Euroa to play Moglonemby, Mansfield Red host Terip and Euroa host Mansfield Blue.

Black has the bye and a team practice.

Violet Town netballers secure second win in a row KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN A GRADE VIOLET Town were keen to start off strong at a high intensity, and that they did.

Violet Town worked hard for most of the first quarter finishing the quarter eight goals in front 12-4. The second quarter saw the two shooters Imy and Prue finding their rhythm, shooting well and not missing many.

Jo was fighting strong and took a few intercepts finishing the second quarter 25-14.

Third quarter saw Violet Town having a strong lead.

Jayde and Brit in defense were working really well, coming up with some fantastic intercepts and deflections.

The shooters were on fire not missing a goal to finish the quarter 44-23.

It was a great team effort in the last quarter with everyone fighting

strong and displaying some beautiful passages of play to come away with a second win in a row.

Final score VT 58 def Stanhope 37.

Best on court Jo Wild, second best Abbie Ellis.

B GRADE THE Violet Town girls started strong in the first quarter, keeping Stanhope within range at quarter time 4-7.

Emma, Chelsea and Teagan kept the pressure on down the court, while Kat kept the pressure on in the ring against Stanhope.

Teagan held strong in the ring for our attack end in the first half with scores being 10-17 at half time. Stanhope managed to pull further away in the last half with few changes.

Violet Town kept going with heads up and kept the pressure on.

Many turnovers for our defence and Meg playing well in shooter for the last half.

Kat continued to gain turnovers in the ring in defence.

Violet Town tried hard all game but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.

Final score VT 20 def by Stanhope 39.

Best on court Kat Jung, second best Teagan Kubeil.

C GRADE VIOLET Town started the game off well, the attacking end were working well together to get the first goal of the match.

In defence Lauren was putting on some great pressure and was coming up with some great rebounds.

Stanhope in the second quarter came out much stronger, putting the pressure on Violet Town which caused some unforced errors, allowing Stanhope to have most of the possession.

Violet Town continued to work hard throughout the second half of the match with some great passages of play.

The defenders worked hard all game and did create many opportunities to shoot but unfortunately the shooters were unable to get the ball through the goal and Stanhope were too strong on the rebounds.

In the end Stanhope were too good.

Final score VT 12 def by Stanhope 54.

15 & UNDER VIOLET Town started the game well with everyone putting on lots of hands over pressure, allow for the defenders to come through with some great deflections and intercepts.

In attack there were some strong leads and passages of play.

VT continued all game to try hard in defence continuing the hands over pressure but unfortunately Stanhope were also too good and

forced Violet Town to turn the ball over.

A great effort from Violet Town.

13 & UNDER DUE to sickness Violet Town only had six girls to start the match.

Thanks to Stanhope for giving us a player, allowing us to play with seven.

The girls tried hard all match with some great passages of play but unfortunately Stanhope were too strong and continued to come up with intercepts and turning them into goals.

A great effort by the girls in positions that they normally don’t play.

A grade netballers lose out against Mooroopna Cats GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE EUROA made their way to the land of the Cats, keen to keep their winning streak going. With a couple of girls missing from the line-up, Molly Redfern from the U/17s team and Caitlyn Elliott, who has been finding form in the B Grade, had been selected in the team.

Mooroopna, who had been showing some form of late, were also out for a win.

Pressure from both sides saw early errors, and it looked like a goal for goal game until a nasty fall by coach Ellie Warnock saw her leave the court for the match.

This necessitated some quick re-shuffling of the team, with Caitlyn Elliott taking to the court for her second game of the afternoon.

Euroa were two goals down at the first break.

The Magpies were a little rattled at the start of the second term, which saw Mooroopna shoot to a six goal lead early in the quarter.

However, the Euroa girls regrouped and with some tireless defence by Tylah Marchbank and Kellie Davidson, the Magpies kept their chances alive.

The third quarter saw some good efforts by Bree Poole who had come out to GA, and Sophie Owen and Eliza Hoare working hard to hit the ring, but in a tight game the small deficit was hard to close.

Tylah and Kellie were getting plenty of turnovers in the defence end but despite the girls only being a couple of goals down, there appeared to be a lack of belief they could grab this one and unfortunately went down by three goals.

Strong win by Euroa reserves RESERVES WHAT a change a week in football can bring with the previous week‘s game having trouble with numbers and this week the Euroa Reserve team able to have four interchange players and the game having 18 players a side.

As we travelled to the Mooroopna ground to tackle the Cats we all knew that this would be a tough assignment.

From the first bounce our reserves were out of the blocks moving the ball from the centre into our forward line hitting the scoreboard.

This gave our team a break on their opposition but as we all know the Mooroopna teams never give up always giving a good contest.

It was a tough contest with both sides hard at it with many clashes during the game with a skirmish at the half time break our reserves were able to hold the lead There were more clashes in the second half but our Euroa team continued to play positive football to come away with a hard fooughtt victory and four valuable points.

Our team was well led by coach Linc McKernan who controlled the backline supporting his defensive group.

Up forward, captain Harrison Lane was supported by Robbie Wil-

son and Matt Ivill who worked with the young players up forward to hit the scoreboard.

The midfield with Hudson Ramsden, Peter Cairns and Zac Gleeson worked well with the on ballers to control the ball and our hold on the game This was real team effort with all players contributing to the win against hard opposition although at occasions we tried to play too fancy with the ball rather than playing to the percentages.

To the two umpires, well done to keep it under control.

The club travels to Kyabram next Sunday to take on their reserves, who are sitting on top of the ladder and are always strong competitors.

Although coaching a decimated line–up, coach Hill was at his all– inspiring best pre–game, enforcing the message of ‘enjoying playing

footy together‘ and sticking to the in–place structure whilst keeping a hard–faced competitive edge around the contest.

Right from the get–go Heath Downie got on top in the ruck accompanied by the silky–smooth Will Creevey and Darby Wilson who had the ball on the string.

With Nic Hill out with COVID, Charlie Watson stepped up as the general down back preventing the Mooroopna floodgates from opening up.

Despite being in control of much of the play, Euroa were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard whilst Mooroopna were making the most of every opportunity that came their way.

This was the case for most of the day and despite a gallant fourth quarter the Cats proved to have an extra edge all day.

goals within three minutes.

Mooroopna snuck in a second goal just before the end of the first quarter to leave Euroa just four points in front.

An early goal on the run by Blake Hepworth and two goals from Will Creevey put Euroa in good stead in the second quarter.

A brilliant smother by Caid Miller and good pressure from the Euroa defense minutes before the half time siren kept Mooroopna to only scoring three points in the second quarter.

The third quarter saw goals from Cohen Paul and Blake Hepworth and the fourth quarter from Charlie Hall, Cohen Paul and Mitchell Walters.

Continued pressure in both quarters and impressive clearance from the Euroa midfield kept Mooroopna goalless from the first quarter.

A great team effort and win in slippery conditions.

Euroa junior footballers show Mooroopna what they’re made of EUROA U13 VS YEA A BEAUTIFUL balmy and mild autumn day greeted the Euroa under 13’s team last Sunday when they travelled to Yea for an afternoon of footy.

Sam Holden got the game off to a spectacular start with a big kick out of the middle.

The midfield featuring Max Beckman and Shayna Rose-Buckle ran well, moving the ball into the hands of star full forward Koby Ross, who completed the early

show of force with two solid goals.

Ethan Saxon kept the pressure on and Imegen Baker was strong on attack.

Full forward Jai McMillan also took a great mark and quick point.

Yea kept the pressure on but the ball remained on Euroa’s turf throughout.

The second quarter saw strong pressure out of the ruck from Kobee Mann while Imegen made a good handball to set Sam Mills up for a goal.

Yea stepped up the pres-

sure and half forward flank, Layla Creevey showed great discipline in maintaining her on -field position and took a good mark then kick to the front of goals.

Mullet brothers, Addi Godsmark and Sam Holden continued to impress from the ruck; Sam tapping the ball out of the ruck to Ollie Robertson, who passed it on nicely.

Always in the contest, Ollie Wilson and Jackson Walker’s smart handball skills and speed down the field got the ball down to Ethan for

yet another one of his beautiful goals.

Haimi Wolfenden kicked a super goal with support of teammate Patrick Murphy.

In the third quarter, the brilliant Angus “Burto” Burton was quick to release the ball from the ruck with a great pass to Koby Ross, and Riley Walker took a superb mark.

Solid defense in tackling came from Leo Murphy, Aaron Van Den Berghe and Jackson Walker.

Haimi Wolfenden kept spectators enthralled and Addi Godsmark took a magic mark at the siren, finishing the third quarter with a goal down the center.

The fourth quarter saw Ben Creevey get the ball moving quickly out of the ruck.

Again, Yea stepped up the pressure, but Euroa stuck to the plan and stayed disciplined in their positions.

Jackson Walker bounced back after injury in the third quarter, kicking a great goal.

Van Den Berghe, Ollie Roberston, Riley Walker and Layla Kreevey showed flexibility and true sportsmanship in changing jumpers and playing good football for Yea who were low on numbers.

Coach Damien Saxon was impressed with his team’s focus - the team stuck to their plan, shared the ball amongst teammates producing an outstanding win with a full-time score in Euroa’s favour 129-7.

THE second round of the Wally Dunn Trophy was played on Saturday, May 14 in cold, wet conditions, not many members ventured out to participate and who could blame them.

Rylie Mc Donald however won the stableford competition with 34 points.

Lineballs were won by Peter Phillips with 31 points and Gary Hewlett got a ball with 29 points.

Nearest the pins, on the 4th was retained by the Club, 8th Rylie Mc Donald, 15th Club, 17th Gary Hewlett.

Ladies drive and pitch was won

by Kerry Hewlett.

Straightest drive went to Gary Hewlett.

Next Saturday’s event is Stableford, the third round of the Wally Dunn Trophy with Rob Brownlee looking after proceedings.

On Monday, May 16 the Vets Intra zone Championship was played at the Club, a report will appear in next week’s edition.

Scratch defeated Whittlesea 3/2 at Broadford, Glen Pearce won 7/5, Rylie Mc Donald won 4/3, Jack Mc Donald lost 4/3, Peter Phillips won 3/2, John Moore lost 5/4.

Handicap side lost 4/1 to Yea at Marysville; Gary Hewlett was the only winner.

Magpies storm home

GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS IN a high quality four quarter game of football under some very dark clouds the Euroa Magpies stamped their authority on the contest right from the first bounce.

Returning co-captain Jacob Gleeson hit the ground running, creating a great deal of opportunity for the Euroa forwards Tristan Davies (four goals) and Jack

McKernan (three goals).

Jack McKernan’s work rate leading high up the ground was brilliant as was the ‘x-factor’ in Jett Trotter as he continued to evade his would-be tacklers.

Coach Rowan had the luxury of Ben Giobbi - returning from injury - sitting in the forward-line as well, his brute strength was no match for the Mooroopna defenders as he time and again setup opportunity for himself

(two goals) and others.

At the other end of the ground Dan Garside had his hands full with Mooroopna’s main goal-scorer yet, with assistance from the likes of Ben Harrison, Adam Giobbi and Nate Trotter, this challenge was over-come throughout the afternoon.

At the final break coach Rowan implored his team to extend their five-goal lead and ‘finish the game off ’.

This meant there was

a green light for the hard running little men like Harrison Jarvie and Lachie Hill - their speed combined with the relentless tall forward pressure from Erish Uthayakumar and Fletcher Paul meant the Mooroopna opposition were finding the going very tough indeed.

The final margin of 10 goals was befitting of the dominance by the Euroa team throughout the afternoon.

Their next challenge awaits against Kyabram, in Kyabram on Sunday, May 22(this is the second and last Sunday clash/fixture for the club in season 2022 due to the need to allow for limited umpiring stocks - umpires having to umpire both Saturdays and Sundays).

ior team with Fletcher Paul making the Under 18 team.

Euroa ladies golf tournament draws crowd of 50 THE Euroa ladies tournament sponsored by the Steers family attracted a big field of 50 players from all over the Dalhousie district.

Euroa’s Dee McMarten took out the C grade handicap event.

A grade scratch was won

by Ruth Warland from Alexandra with a fine 88.

B grade scratch went to Glenda Woods from Seymour on 93, good scores in difficult conditions.

The ladies Wednesday comp had 17 players Freda Edwards on 30 points was a winner on count back over Gail Allen whilst in division two Mary Dewis had a big score of 38 to win division two.

Michelle Grady won the nine hole competition.

In the men’s, Bill Wright on 37 points was a narrow winner over Mark Corridan on 36 who also collected both drive and pitches and Nearest the pin.

Most of the division two players struggled in tough conditions.

Big Dav Mackrell showed that his eagle on the first last week was not a fluke after all when he repeated the effort this week on the long par-5 10th hole.

Back to back Eagles for Dav. More rainfall before the Saturday qualifying round of the Lewis family knockout event and showers on Saturday morning reduced the field to just 21 players.

Cam Roper was a clear winner on +2 from his handicap of one.

His putter was red hot.

Josh Bell and Ross Wishart were tied on Square.

Good to have Gary Ritchie back in the country but his golf is still a bit jetlagged.

The matches to be played are Cam Roper versus Dick Farmer, Josh Bell versus

Keith Seeber, Ross Wishart versus Marcus Steers and Dale Mackintosh versus Mick Keeley.

Intense rivalry will make for a competitive second round.

Cam Roper’s good form and having just missed out in this event last year makes him the clear favourite for 2022.

In division two pennant, Paddy McCarthy’s team had a narrow 3/2 loss, but will still qualify for the final next week against Broadford at Trentham.

In division one pennant Euroa defeated Hidden Valley 3/2 and next week will play the Final against Woodend at Broadford.

It will be the 10th consecutive Division One Final.

Next Saturday Peter Ellis and Cam Roper will send the field out for a stableford event whilst Wednesday is a four ball Stableford.

GOOD RESULTS IN TOUGH CONDITIONS: Golfers took to the greens regardless of the rain and still managed some good results.
