NEW data released in Domain’s Decemeber Rent Report has shown that rents have increased in almost every part of regional Victoria in the past year, with the Strathbogie Shire having the highest percentage increase.

The median price of houses in the area rose 19.1 per cent to $420 in December 2022 after being just $353 in December 2021.

Neighbouring council areas Alpine, Campaspe and Indigo also saw significant rises, with rent increasing by over 13 per cent in each shire.

Ten council areas in the state posted double-digit rent rises.

In Euroa, there are few homes available for rent and costs have increased significantly.

The impact of interest rate rises has prompted landlords to review rents, especially when a property became vacant, while tenants sharing a house were filling their spare rooms to cut costs.

Domain’s report described a boom in regional rents in recent years as Melburnians who could work remotely fled lockdowns in search of more space.

“They’re still growing, because there’s obviously still a mismatch between supply and demand,” Domain chief of research and economics Dr Nicola Powell said.

“But they’re moving away from that strong rate of growth.

“Most of the areas have had an over-30 per cent increase in the last five years.

“That’s where you see the affordability ceiling and the strain being placed on local residents that are unable to keep pace.

“We haven’t built enough social housing for people on lower incomes - those most vulnerable Australians that are in the private rental market.”

Shane Thomson from Ray White Euroa was asked about the increases in rental prices, confirming that prices have seen a large rise over the past year.

“Tenants could find a three-bedroom house

for about $350 a week 12 months ago, but now might expect to pay $450 or even more,” he said.

Mr Thomson said during the recent property boom, sales were buoyant and investors were taking the opportunity to cash in and sell to people coming to the area, which has reduced the supply of rental properties available, He added that interest rate rises had also prompted landlords to review rental prices, especially when a property was becoming vacant.

Flood payment delay concerns BUSINESSES across the North East have expressed concerns about the delay in receiving financial assistance in the wake of extensive flooding in October.

While many businesses have successfully applied for funding under the Small Business Immediate Flood Relief Program, further funding under the Business and Community Sport Flood Recovery Grants Program is required in order for many businesses to reopen.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said some businesses were facing closure unless they receive financial assistance in the coming weeks.

“I’ve spoken to business owners right across our region and there is considerable uncertainty and anxiety around flood payments,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It was great to see the initial $5,000 payment out the door promptly, but businesses now need further support dealing with such substantial damage and loss of income.

“The sad reality is that if many businesses don’t see financial assistance in their account soon their doors may not open again.

“Right now, nothing is more important that ensuring flood impacted communities across our regions get the support they need to get back on their feet.”

Ms Cleeland said she had raised her concerns with the Victorian Government in the hope of working together to support critical assist.

“I have raised this matter with the Minister for Small Business and am hopeful we can work with Business Victoria to expedite the most urgent applications,” Ms Cleeland said.

“People are finding it incredibly difficult to negotiate the bureaucracy so anything that can be done to simplify and speed up the process is incredibly welcome.

“If anyone in concerned about the progress of their application I encourage them to follow up with Business Victoria on 13 22 15 and check the status of their application on the Business Victoria Grants Portal.

“If you or someone you know if struggling to navigate the emergency flood payments, please get in touch.

“My office is always open to anyone who needs assistance.

“My team and I will help wherever we can.”

The REIV’s December Quarterly Median Report reveals that regional Victorian house prices grew 8 per cent over the year to $610,000 while the annual median for Units and Apartments rose 6.5 per cent to $425,000.

Feeling the heat as the mercury rises

By GUS RIDDER SUMMER was in full swing as people across the region felt the full effects of extreme weather in the past week.

Euroa recorded several consecutive days over 35 degrees, with little let-up early in the mornings or at night.

From January 8 to January 17, the lowest maximum temperature recorded at the Euroa weather station was 33 degrees, with four days in that timeframe reaching 36 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a Heat Health Warning for the week, informing the community of the pending extreme weather.

The impact of the heat was felt across the community, with many of the weekend’s scheduled sport cancelled due to the extreme temperatures.

With a 41 degree day forecast in Shepparton last Saturday, Euroa’s A, B and C grade cricket teams all had their weekend matches cancelled.

Swimming spots were packed throughout the weekend, with the Euroa pool busy, along with the Polly McQuinns swimming hole which saw plenty of visitors escaping the heat.

Reports of melted roads were made in Strathbogie and minor power outages were recorded in Euroa on

From Wednesday the weather is expected to return to milder temperatures, with the forecast not having any days over 30 degrees for the next seven days.

registered on the BOM’s daily rainfall table for the Euroa region.

Firefighting aircraft on standby across North East Victoria A LARGE fleet of firefighting aircraft are ready to respond to bushfires across the North East to help protect communities and the environment during the current fire danger period.

The aircraft will be used by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic), Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) to respond to fires and other emergencies.

There will be specialist aircraft based in Shepparton to provide cover for the local region, in addition to aircraft being based at other hubs around the North East including Albury, Ovens and Mansfield.

Shepparton will be home to the Firebird 327, Airbus AS350 B3 Squirrel.

This single engine helicopter is predominantly used for firebombing and is equipped with a 1,100-litre tank that can be refilled in the hover in about 45 seconds.

FFMVic deputy chief fire officer Aaron Kennedy said aircraft play a critical role when responding to fires.

“On high fire danger days, as soon as the call goes out to respond, firebombing aircraft will be dispatched so we can hit fires hard and fast and keep them small,” Mr Kennedy said.

“North East Victoria is one of the most fire prone areas in the world and this impressive aircraft fleet will work together to deliver an effective fire suppression operation.

THE Strathbogie Shire Council is offering free activities to celebrate children’s week in the community this Friday, with a series of online and in-person activities available.

Children’s Week is a national celebration that recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children.

Residents can sign up for Family Fun Days in both Nagambie and Euroa, with plenty of exciting activities for kids.

Nagambie’s fun day will be held from 9:30am-11:30am at the Nagambie Senior Citizens Centre on Friday, January 20 and Euroa’s will be held at the Lawn Tennis Club from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Bring the family along to celebrate children’s week at these free events, with council having a host of educational and fun workshops and activities for kids of all ages.

Get your tickets for Ladies Day

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Cricket Club is presenting a Ladies Day event for members of the local community in early February, with exciting events, prizes and music all for a fantastic cause.

The ladies-only event will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 2pm at the Euroa Memorial Oval Function Centre with proceeds from the day being donated to the Breast Cancer Network Australia Foundation.

Similar events have been run successfully in the past by the Pink Stumps Committee, raising money for the McGrath Foundation.

This year’s event has been organised by women involved with the Euroa Cricket Club, who thanked the Pink Stumps Committee for the excellent work they have done in the past.

“We really loved the work they have done in the past,” organiser Kirrily McCombe said.

“We can’t quite match the scope of what they do, but we really wanted to still do something for such a great cause.

“Our version will be a bit smaller and more causal but it will be a lot of fun.

“Come and socialise, have a few cocktails and listen to

While recognising your munificence in suggesting Aboriginal people have the right to use ‘our’ schools, hospitals, public transport, cars, houses, jobs, laws and language (in fact, many were when young given no choice but to use our language as they were stopped from using theirs), I do have just one little question?

From where, how, and why would Aboriginal people need to apply for the right to migrate to Australia after being here for 60,000 + years?

THE First Nations people of Australia are asking us to vote YES for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the near future.

They want to be able to advise the Government of the day on their matters.

It makes perfect sense to me and many other Australians, it’s respectful, practical and above all else, it’s fair.

It’s not so long ago that Aboriginal people couldn’t vote.

They fought for this country, but then were not allowed to have a say in government.

Was that fair or reasonable?

Of course not, and we have known that for a long time.

When I was a kid, their children were still being taken away, how shameful it was and all because of the colour of their skin and their rich and ancient culture.

It’s been a long time coming and this government is supporting the Voice to Parliament because every government prior has failed to be able to address Indigenous issues.

I believe that a majority will vote YES with the understanding that this is long overdue and I think we will realise the importance of this in ‘closing the gap’.

It’s simply the ‘Australian’ thing to do.

Ratepayers footing the bill for our roads FOR years our local councils have been battling to balance the books, battling to deliver essential services to communities.

Yet recent RedBridge polling shows most Victorians want councils abolished, or are even unsure of what they do.

This reflects the challenges councils - particularly in rural and regional areas now face.

The polling also suggested more than half the people surveyed supported even more council amalgamation.

Local Government faces an uphill battle, with regional councils responsible for assets across thousands of square kilometres - for example, the Rural City of Mildura is more than 22,000 square kilometres and more than double the size of greater Melbourne.

Our councils are also being forced to do more with less, as the Andrews Labor Government shirks its responsibilities by

pushing more costs from the state to local government.

And it’s ratepayers who are footing the ever-increasing bill.

While councils deliver essential services such as roads and rubbish, they are also responsible for incredibly vital community programs such as childcare.

Regional communities are already struggling with childcare waiting lists that continue to increase, in too many smaller communities the locals are left with no services at all.

This is having a direct and seriously detrimental impact on attracting new families to towns to fill an increasing number of job vacancies.

It is a domino effect that is beginning to threaten the viability of more and more small regional communities.

We are also seeing the results of Labor’s funding cuts - including its axing of the Country Roads and Bridges Program - on our dangerously crumbling local roads.

Many regional councils maintain and thousands and thousands of kilometres of roads and hundreds of bridges in their local government area.

The Country Roads and Bridges Program meant local councils could plan necessary projects such as bridge renewals and resurfacing unsafe roads on which the community relies.

Labor’s disregard for the role of local councils has left a bitter taste in Victorians’ mouths, and the polling shows it.

Confidence in councils will only come from a financially responsible state government, rather than one that passes costs - and the buck - to local government.

Horse course to support responsible ownership RSPCA Victoria is inviting new and future horse owners to attend a new course in February to promote excellent horse care and responsible ownership.

Many Victorians left the city and their suburban lifestyles behind during the pandemic and took up hobby farming as part of their new lives.

The new course will teach the essential skills every horse owner needs to provide appropriate care for horses.

“We are delighted so many Victorians are interested in taking care of larger animals and, in this case, being responsible horse owners,” education and training manager at RSPCA Victoria Belinda Marchbank said.

“They can bring such a unique joy into our lives, but new horse owners may not realise exactly what their equine companion needs to live a healthy and happy life.”

Similar to RSPCA Victoria’s ‘We Bought a Farmlet’ short course on farm animal care, Equine Excellence is designed for current and prospective horse owners alike.

Equine Excellence is filled with practical skills and knowledge for every horse owner and aims to promote best-practice responsible horse care in Victoria.

Classes are kept small to encourage questions and enhance participants’ learning

experience during the course.

GRAHAM “Curly” Walker passed away quietly in hospital on Sunday, January 8 following seven years of serious health problems.

His wife Biddy was with him when he died.

He was 82.

Calm and considered were just two words which described young and enthusiastic speedway driver “Curly” Walker at a time when most of the younger drivers were considered anything but being possessive of these qualities.

“Under-rated” and “understated” were two other adjectives that could easily describe his attitude to life and racing.

A member of Euroa’s famed Andy’s Racing Team, Curly’s racing career at what was then the Euroa Hot Rod track could be traced back as far as 1969.

He was a highly valued member of the club, work-

ing as a mechanic at Andy’s Service Station on the Hume Highway and was great mate of racing legend Eric Mann.

Curly was a very good racing driver with plenty of placings recorded in the club’s history documents.

These included several wins in the highly soughtafter Local Cup, a race specifically reserved for Euroa drivers as a major feature at the end of each meeting.

Curly’s racing career was brief, but for one shining moment it was evident to all.

His contributions as a clubman, including an official capacity as a scrutineer, were paramount.

Trophies, numbers and statistics can only tell part of his story.

In 1974 Curly won the trophy for “most improved driver” of Euroa Speedway Club.

He was also awarded a Life Membership of the club along with his mates Eric Mann, Trevor Page and Ray

Petrie during that period.

After a break, Curly came back to racing in 1974, taking over car #74 of Trevor Frost, after the owner and his friend “Polly” Parsons were tragically killed in a road accident close to Euroa.

Curly changed the car’s racing number to #7 and raced under the Andy’s Racing Team banner with Mann and Petrie in the mid to late 1970s A friend has confided that Curly used a little “trick” when he added cement (or concrete) into the bottom of the race car’s doors to add traction to the car on Euroa’s dirt surface.

Our photo shows Curly in the Andy’s Racing Team FE Holden #7 in full flight perfectly balanced, poised, focused and determined.

If ever there was an example of how a Speedway Saloon car should be driven, Curly was demonstrating that here.

AN exhibition that showcases the earliest work of Australian children’s authors and illustrators and their early attempts at storytelling will stop in Euroa after launching in Shepparton this month.

Curated by Aimee Chan, the ‘Juvenilia’ exhibition showcases the work produced by an author or artist while they were still a child.

The exhibition features contributions from Andy Griffiths, Alison Lester, Ursula Dubosarsky, Graeme Base, Hazel Edwards, Danny Katz, Kylie Howarth, Aimee Chan, Tim Harris, Oliver Phommavanh, Chris Kennett, Jeremy Lachlan, Trent Roberts, Dianne Wolfer, Craig Sheather and Pinky Wittingslow.

The pieces they have contributed vary greatly, depending on the age of the individual at the time.

Some of the pieces reflect quite clearly the author or illustrator they have become.

Others show mere glimpses, having been created when the artist was much younger.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Protect produce against QFF HOME gardeners are being urged to act now to protect fruit and vegetables from Queensland fruit fly (QFF) this summer and help safeguard Victoria’s valuable horticultural industry.

The wet spring created the perfect breeding conditions for the pest, which is most active now until May. Agriculture Victoria statewide fruit fly coordinator Cathy Mansfield said QFF are attracted to ripening fruit and vegetables.

“Maintaining good biosecurity practices starts in your home garden - and it’s vital to limit fruit fly population growth and halt its spread to neighbours, nearby orchards

or farms,” Ms Mansfield said.

“The best way to protect your fruit and vegetables is to use insect-proof netting during the growing season.”

Continuously flowering vegetable and berry crops should be covered when developing fruit are very small.

If you’re unable to net your trees, monitor for fruit fly and use other preventative methods such as baiting, and insecticides, traps and remove any unwanted ripe or dropped fruit.

QFF attacks a wide range of fruit and vegetables including tomatoes, apricots, figs, peaches, nectarines, cherries, and berries.

Home gardeners can keep watch for fruit fly sting marks on developing fruit and vegetables - they’re only tiny and easily missed but affected produce can rot from the inside.

Fruit fly maggots are often found in the centre of produce, ranging in size from, 5-10mm long and creamy-white in colour.

If you do find active fruit fly, it’s important to let neighbouring properties know and encourage people to check their own produce for damage.

Future Drought Fund inquiry launched THE Productivity Commission has launched an inquiry into the Future Drought Fund that will examine the effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness of its activities.

The Future Drought Fund provides secure, continuous funding for programs, grants and arrangements that support Australian farmers and associated communities to prepare for, and become more resilient to, the impacts of future droughts.

The Victorian Farmer’s Federation (VFF) is interested in hearing the feedback of farmers and local communities to help inform our response to the review in line with our Drought Policy Statement.

Emma Germano re-elected THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) announced the outcome of its elections for VFF president and vice-president, as well as a number of VFF commodity group positions, at the end of December.

VFF acting returning officer Brendan Tatham congratulated all successful incumbent office bearers as the future leaders of Victoria’s peak agricultural advocacy body.

“VFF members have reelected Emma Germano as President and Danyel Cucinotta as Vice-President,” he said.

“I congratulate both Emma and Danyel and look forward to working with them and the wider VFF team to help deliver for farmers and regional Victorians in the coming years.

“The VFF would like to acknowledge and thank all candidates for the posi-

One Nation MP begins rural city stay Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell y to operate p out of Faithfull Street electoral office over next six months

By RYAN MALCOLM NEWLY elected state upper house MP Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell is set to call Wangaratta home for at least the next six months, last week taking over the electoral office previously held by Tania Maxwell.

The first One Nation MP to ever be elected to Victorian Parliament, who hails from Invergordon just north of Shepparton, joins Animal Justice MP Georgie Purcell and Nationals MP Gaelle Broad in providing a new look to the Northern Victoria electorate, which is rounded out by returning Liberal MP Wendy Lovell and Labor’s Jaclyn Symes.

Having moved to the region in 2018 as part of a dairy farming family, Ms Tyrrell said her decision to join One Nation a year later had been fueled by a desire to improve agriculture outcomes and address water legislation for regional Victorians.

“I started asking ques-

tions and then I approached our local member (Tim McCurdy) and the Nationals said ‘why don’t you run for the seat of Shepparton?’ - I did a bit more research and the Nationals (weren’t) the right fit for me,” she said.

“One Nation was the only (party) which had a water policy that I could understand - which a lot don’t have - and they also they had a history of consistently trying to fix the problems the right way.

“I realised I had a bit of a knack for being able to tackle the issues for farmers from a different angle, so I could contribute better to agriculture on this side of the fence than milking cows.

“Water impacts our seat so much - the whole of Northern Victoria was grown on the backbone of agriculture, so without that it’s going to impact a lot of people.”

Despite grabbing headlines in recent years due to high-profile antics in parliament by federal member

Pauline Hanson, Ms Tyrrell said One Nation’s state policies had been largely dictated by herself and party president Warren Pickering, with an eye to being handson within the community.

“Pauline just quickly looked over (our policies) and said ‘yeah, that fits within our values,’” she said.

“A lot of people (say) we’re racist redneck hicks and I always say point to one policy that says we’re racist and that stumps them.

“I’m definitely not the type of representative and the party’s not that type of party where we rely on boards that are created for politicians we don’t like to play Chinese whispers.

“We like to go out there first hand and hear it ourselves and see it ourselves so if we’re not in the office at any point, ring up and make an appointment so we’re here.”

Roo population spike sparks greater cull forecast in North East for 2023

THE total cull of kangaroos in North East Victoria is recommended to increase from 22,100 last year to a quota of 35,600 in 2023 due to growing populations of the marsupial.

The abundance of grey kangaroos within the nonforested parts of Victoria has increased by about 24 per cent compared with that reported from a 2020 aerial survey, rising from 1,378,605 to 2,363,850 Eastern Grey and Western Grey kangaroos.

A population estimate for the North East in 2020 was 239,850 compared to 355,950 in 2022.

In 2020 some 28,800 were recommended for harvesting in the region, and in 2021 some 23,545 were culled.

The state harvest in 2022 was recommended at 185,850 with the cull not to exceed 10pc of the estimated grey kangaroo population.

With an estimation of grey kangaroos across the state reaching a population of about 2,363850 this year, 10 per cent of these or 236,350 are recommended to be culled including 215,200 Eastern Greys and 21,150 Western Greys.

The Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research carries out an estimation every year to help determine the approaching year’s harvesting program.

New leaders at Vic farmers’ markets body VICTORIAN Farmers’ Markets Association (VFMA) members have elected a new committee of management at their recent annual general meeting.

The organisation represents 500 farmers, artisan food producers and market members selling direct to the public through more than 30 accredited VFMA markets across the state - including Euroa, Nagambie, and more towns across regional and metro Victoria.

New president Charith Senanayake leads a team including walnut, stonefruit, beef, pork and egg farmers as well as metro and regional market managers.

“VFMA members were able to continue serving customers despite the pressures of lockdowns, travel restrictions and public health measures.

“With COVID Safe measures in place, our markets remained the important community hubs they’re known as.”

The VFMA has recently undertaken a comprehensive membership consultation to develop its new strategy.

“The outgoing committee has delivered a clear direction and goals for the association’s future,” Mr Senanayke.

“As a new committee, we’re rolling our sleeves up to get this implemented through 2023.”

FIRE READY: Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland met with volunteers at the Longwood CFA to discuss the Fire Danger Period and how to prepare for extreme weather.

THE Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has encouraged locals to download the VicEmergency app and ensure they are prepared as the hot weather continues throughout the region.

During a visit to Longwood, Ms Cleeland chatted with local CFA volunteers about the potential risks associated with the extreme weather recently.

The CFA has declared a Fire Danger Period in all LGAs of the Euroa electorate which will run until the beginning of May. Ms Cleeland stressed the importance of following the

advice of emergency services personnel and having a clear evacuation plan in place.

“With summer now in full swing across our region it’s crucial everyone has a fire plan in place to stay safe,” Ms Cleeland said.

“As we continually see, the weather can change rapidly.

“It’s important to stay alert and informed about local conditions.

“I encourage everyone to download the VicEmergency app, remain vigilant and look out for one another.”

Ms Cleeland said while roadside slashing was occur-

ring there was plenty of work to be done across the region.

“With recent wet weather we’ve seen a startling amount of growth on our roadsides, particularly on major highways like the Hume and Goulburn Valley,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This growth poses a real fire risk and while work is underway to get this under control, there is still a fair bit of work to be done.”

Ms Cleeland thanked local emergency service volunteers for their contributions to the community, particularly over a challenging period.

“Our emergency service vol-

unteers are some of the most selfless and dedicated members of our communities,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The SES put in an extraordinary amount of work during the recent floods across our region, which was accompanied by amazing community spirit.

“Likewise, our CFA crews who we are eternally grateful for, particularly through the summer months.

“I encourage everyone to thank these tireless volunteers and ensure you are prepared to make their lives as easy as possible.”

UNUSUAL PHENOMENON: These past few weeks we have been inundated by white butterflies or cabbage moths.

Thousands have been fluttering over the tops of nearby paddocks, on our lawns, and especially on our flowers.

It has been a very strange sight to see.

They came last year too but not as many.

Girls just want to have fun NEW research has found when it comes to playing community sport, it seems girls just want to have fun.

The research team from Victoria University tracked more than 5000 females who participated either in community club gymnastics or football (soccer) around Australia from 2019 to 2021.

About half the survey respondents had stopped participating, and the other half were still involved with their sport.

Nearly two thirds of those who left reported their main reason for stopping - especially for teenagers - was because they were not having fun.

Other major reasons included losing interest, having an unfriendly coach or official, injuries, or feeling too old.

Researcher professor Rochelle Eime said at a time when community sport clubs were desperate to attract members and keep them, the findings revealed many retention issues, but ones that were easy to fix.

“Clubs need to ensure what they offer aligns to the reasons girls and women get involved in the first place,” she said.

“Most members are there to enjoy themselves - not to win or

Village residents after more protection, security

By DIANE GRANT IN 2022 it was brought to the attention of some retirement homes and relocatable villages for those aged 55 and over that they come under the Victorian Caravan Parks rules and regulations, much like caravan parks.

Kelvingrove Village had Judy Duff come to visit in August to discuss a conference organised about changes from the Manufactured Home Village Residents Representatives (MHVRR) to the Manufactured Home Owners Assn Vic (MHOA).

Discussions were had with Ms Duff regarding how village residents felt about having representation from their village at that conference last August in Melbourne.

That conference was eventually held on Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions.

It was good to meet her face to face and to see that retirement villages have a great advocate who is doing her very best over the past two and a half years to get an organisation such as MHOA going to give retirement homes a voice.

Ms Duff was able to inform residents of what her organisation is trying to do for village folk like we are, and what needs to be done to have a say for villages like us in future.

The idea is to become an identity of our own with representation legally, in parliament and with our own set of ideas, with increased coverage and protection and security.

“It is important that older Australians in villages such as we are in have details as to who is responsible for certain things, services and such,” Ms Duff said.

Residents in retirement homes don’t pay water or council rates, making them unable to vote for local councils, similar to those in aged care homes.

They can vote in state and federal elections so are encouraged by Ms Duff and her group to write to their newly elected politicians lobbying for a “voice” in our parliament so they can have a say for villages in the future.

sation and state support for similar homes but Victoria and other states do not.

• Security: What do other small villages have in place for security to try to deter break ins of units, stealing, vandalism?

• Emergency management: What do other villages have in place for answering emergency calls? Easy access to leave our village if an emergency arises,

fires, earthquake, threats.

• Supply charges for energy: electricity and gas bills.

• Repairs of facilities: Who is responsible for repairs of facilities?

Crowds enjoy day at Merton Races NEW Year’s Day at Merton was a cracker of a day for more than 1000 people who attended the annual Merton Amateur Turf Club Inc.’s annual race meeting.

A full six race card was set for keen racegoers with the main race of the day being the Elders Merton Cup. Fashions on the field sections were also hotly contested from the youngest to the more elderly vying for some great prizes, all donated by local traders.

Gwenda Tait was once again in charge of the fashions which was compered this year by Alanna Storer and judged by Naomi Voss and Julie Duncan.

Euroa defeated in midweek T20 Euroa 10/76 (C Paul 15, R Hill 14) defeated by Katandra 3/77 (S Dadallage 1/9, W Jackson 1/15) ROUND one of the Shepparton A grade T20 competition kicked off on Thursday evening, with Euroa facing Katandra at the Memorial Oval.

On an extremely hot evening, Euroa won the toss and elected to bat first.

Things initially looked promising for the home side as the Katandra opening bowler begun the innings with two wides, but this was quickly forgotten after he dismissed Will Jackson with the first legal delivery of the match.

Strong bowling from Katandra had Euroa unable to build strong partnerships at the top order.

The spinners caused the most issues for the batsmen, getting the ball to kick on and skid.

At 5/31 with much of the innings left to play, Euroa looked in trouble.

The magpies managed to fight back to hang around for 18.1 of the 20 overs due to solid batting by Cohen Paul (15), Ryan Hill (14) and Vaughan Kirk (12).

With 76 runs on the board, it was always going to be a difficult game to win but Euroa has shown they are up for a challenge before.

HOW’S THAT: Euroa bowler Sham Dadallage took 1/9 in the T20 but the team’s efforts couldn’t story Katandra.

Goulburn Valley veterans returning for 2023 season

Over 60s play without fuss THE only cricket team to brave the scorching heat of the weekend was Euroa’s Veteran Cricket over 60s team at the Friendlies Oval where they played host to Barkley Street Maribynong.

Euroa won the toss, sending Barkley Street in to bat.

The wicket proved to be playing fairly even, with plenty in it for

the bowlers and runs to be made by the batsmen once the shine of the new ball wore off.

The game itself remained evenly poised for much of the afternoon.

However, it was Barkley Street Maribynong 8/186 that prevailed over Euroa 7/161 after the allotted 40 overs.

CLOSE CONTEST: It was a close fought game between the two sides, who both did well to get on the field on a weekend where other cricket games were cancelled.

Avenel bowlers rise up the ladder MIDWEEK PENNANT - Division three AVENEL are now in third place on the ladder after a three rink win at home against Mooroopna Golf, 16 98 to 0 - 47.

Kick starting the game with a five, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) never lost lead in a strong overall team performance.

With a 24 shot lead at the lunch break, they increased the lead to finish off with a 27 shot win, 40 - 13.

From there it was a clinical performance as they surged ahead with a comfortable win 32 - 12.

THE Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association (GVVGA) will start its 2023 program at Kyabram Parkland Golf Club on Monday, January 30 for a 4BBB event.

Upon joining, members are issued a membership card that contains the calendar of events.

You can also view the syllabus on the GVVGA website under the district information pages.

The year runs January to December and the annual joining fee is $20.

Most of their fixtures are stableford events with a shot-gun start.

There is no pre-booking.

Event registrations are processed at the venue with assembly usually at 9:30 am for a 10 am start.

An entry fee of $20 for each competition covers green fees, a light luncheon (salad roll or catering decision of the host club), competition prizes in three grades, nearest the pin prizes, a generous number of raffle prizes, and “down the line” balls.

14 -18 events are scheduled each year.

GVVGA is an incorporated entity, operating under a constitution, and affiliated with the Victorian Veteran Golfers Association.

This affiliation provides members with public liability and professional indemnity insurance benefits and access to a number of state and national events.

Mansfield clay target shooters persevere with warm conditions MANSFIELD CLAY TARGET CLUB COMPETITION January 15 THE monthly Mansfield Clay Target Club shoot was held on Sunday in sunny calm conditions with seven squads of 38 competitors attended.

Today’s events were the annual Champion of Champions which was followed by a 20 Pair Double rise Championship.

Competitors came from far and wide included club representatives from Alexandra, Benalla, Euroa, Wangaratta, Woods Point, Corowa, Melbourne, Yarrawonga, Echuca, Numurkah and QLD. The day kicked off with a five target point score eyeopener cash divide with a large field scoring the possible maximum of 15 points and taking their share of the cash.

In AA grade Daniel Chinn (Woods Point), Mick Ward (Woods Point), Chris Scooter Figgins (Yarrawonga), Darren Saunders (Yarrawonga), Terry Walls (Yarrawonga) and Andrew Cameron (Mansfield) competed.

In A grade Mitch Dunnachie (Mansfield), Ken Skinner (Mansfield), Marty McLachlan (Mansfield) and John King (Euroa).

B grade; Geoff Foster (Mansfield), David Luelf

Alone in C grade was Rebecca Kirley (Mansfield).

This lead into the main competition of the day, 75 target Champion of Champions, being a mixed bag of targets over three disciplines totalled for a single overall result, all three events were shot off 18 metres.

The first challenge was a 25 target double barrel followed by 25 target single barrel and finally 25 target point score with a maximum overall possible score of 125.

After all squads rotated through a hearty chicken and ham salad feast was served while scores were tallied.

The results being Steve Atkins of Echuca taking

overall on 120 and second in AA was Phil Matthews of Boarder CTC on 119.

A grade was Mansfield pair Marty McLachlan 115 and Jason Foster 113.

B grade also went local, David Luelf 115 and Shaun Kirley 108.

Just to keep things in house John Desmond 110 and Steve Wilson 100 brought home the goods for Mansfield.

Following lunch the final competition of the day commenced with 40 targets thrown as 20 pair.

AA grade and overall was Steve Atkins 35 over AA second Angus Cameron 32.

Leonard Quirk of Melbourne took out his first double rise win in A grade with 34 over Mansfield’s Phillip Desmond 33.

B grade was a draw between Darren Saunders and

Mansfield junior Carson Weingott both 33, after a further 10 pair Darren was victorious by one point on 41/50.

C grade winners were Allan Kidd 28 (Mansfield) and interstate visitor Allan West 27 (Richmond River QLD).

Overall a great day was had by all with shooters and family members all participating to ensure a smoothly run day of competition with everyone chipping in with scoring, refereeing and generally helping out to deliver a smoothly run program.

by Robert and Linda Lay of Woods Point CTC. Mansfield Clay Target Gun hosts the North East Zone shoot the third Sunday of each month with the next shoot to be conducted February 19.

The club is family focused with lunch provided and all junior shoots sponsored by the club with all junior fees waved for all competitions.

Practice is conducted at club grounds each Thursday through daylight savings commencing 4pm, Pikes Road Mansfield.

Euroa’s talented juniors perform at country cricket week

By SCOTT WALTERS A NUMBER of Euroa’s most talented junior cricketers took part in the 2023 country week that ran from January 3 - January 6.

The results and highlights for the week are as follows: U13 B - Levi Berry wicket keeper, three catches and three run outs.

Patrick Murphy opened the bowling and made 13 runs.

Cricket Shepparton didn’t make the final, instead this played out between Seymour District 4/144 V Bendigo District 144.

U13 A - Cricket Shepparton made the final and lost 99 V Bendigo district cricket 8/103 Ollie Wilson took eight wickets for the week including 6/20 in the Final.

Cooper Goodall took five wickets for the week.

U14 - Cricket Shepparton made the final and won 7/128 V Bendigo cricket association 10/79 Ethan Saxon made 71 runs for the week.

Jack Walters wicket kept with two dismissals.

Nagambie’s Flynn O’Brien took five wickets

and made 31 runs and Archie Harrison best figures of 1/15 and made 20 runs for the week.

U15 - Cricket Shepparton made the final and lost a very close game 167 V Bendigo 9/170.

Captain Walter Jackson made 45 runs for week and took six wickets.

Leo Murphy also took six wickets for the week and finished ranked eighth in bowling overall whilst Walter finished ranked seventh overall.

Archie Wilson best figures of 1/8, made 17 runs and took two catches.

U16 - Cricket Shepparton 1/122 def Bendigo District cricket Association 119 in the final Oscar Lambourn 63 no Sam O’Brien 43 no Euroa’s Mitchell Walters made 27 runs and took seven wickets including 5/23 in the final.

Longwood Thoroughbred Farm success at 2023 Magic Millions

By NICK MCCABE THE 2023 edition of Australia’s premier yearling sale ‘The Gold Coast Magic Millions’, was held from January 9 to 16.

This year’s sale saw a record 971 book one lots listed, which included progeny from 108 individual stallions, many of which that stand in the Strathbogie Shire.

However, one of the shire’s largest representatives at the 2023 sale was the Longwood Thoroughbred Farm, which is owned and managed by Michael and Siobhan Christian.

For the 2023 sale, Longwood Thoroughbred Farm travelled eight of their finest prepared yearlings to the Gold Coast with confidence they would impress some of Australia’s highest profile buyers, and impress they certainly did.

In total seven out of eight lots were sold, fetching an average sale price of $437,143 for a total aggregate of $3,060,000.

This placed the farm as the leading Victorian vendor on average price achieved (for more than seven lots sold) and sixth overall.

The highlight undoubtedly for Longwood Thoroughbred Farm over the seven day event was the sale of Lot 886 a Zoustar x Fuddle Dee Duddle Filly that went under the hammer for an astonishing $1,450,000.

The filly is a full sister to group three winning 2YO Brereton and is closely related to last years dominant group one Manikato Stakes winner, Bella Nipotina.

While the Christian family has been breeding for some time, Longwood Thoroughbred Farm, located in Longwood East, is only a relatively new venture.

“This was an amazing result for the farm in our first draft we’ve taken to the Magic Millions,” they said.

“To sell a yearling for $1.45m at a major yearling sale gives us great justification about in we’re trying to achieve.

“We have a great team on the farm led by Lelaina Vennemeyer and Steph Attwood who prepared our yearlings in outstanding order.
