Klofty retires Nearing his 71st birthday, mechanic Franz Kloft closes his iconic workshop p

IN 1953, in Germany, the Klofts named their newborn baby boy “Franz”, oblivious that in the not-toodistant future, in country Australia, a building signed “Franz Kloft MECHANICAL REPAIRS” would become an intrinsic part of Euroa’s visual fabric, the workshop prominently positioned on Railway Street at the entrance of Binney Street.

The sign has been part of Euroa for about 30 years, according to Mr Kloft, but how long it will remain that way is uncertain: last month, with his 71st birthday approaching, his lifelong career as a mechanic came to a quiet end as he closed up the shop for good.

“It’s a bit sad, but it’s time and once it’s gone I’ll be glad it’s gone, it’s a big load off my shoulders,” he said.

“I mean, we worked hard to get it.”

In his own words, Mr Kloft had been “sort of broke” when he started renting part of the adjacent building (which has since been demolished) for $20 a week over 30 years ago.

He had been the manager of Pinton Motors in Euroa for about two years when the owner, Laurie Pinton, allegedly skipped town one night while still owing Mr Kloft and others “a fair bit of money”.

was sort of broke with a couple of kids and so I had to start on my own,” he said.

Before Pinton Motors, Mr Kloft had worked as a mechanic in Shepparton for about two years and for Ben Iannucci in Euroa for another two years, after a life spent moving from place to place.

His family had moved from Germany to Australia when Franz was six months old, and his father then worked on railways all over the country, relocating with the family frequently while progressing from lad porter to station master.

Mr Kloft, nicknamed “Klofty” by some, completed his last year of high school in Mansfield, attended Benalla Technical College, completed an apprenticeship in Mansfield, spent time travelling Australia and America, and lived in South Australia for about six years.

When he struck out on his own in Euroa, he rented the Railway Street workshop from panel-beater Kevin Ellis, then from the Euroa Co-Op Society, then from WB Hunter Rural, before he finally purchased the building himself.

By DARREN CHAITMAN ARTC Inland Rail may need to acquire the Franz Kloft Mechnical Repairs building in Euroa if the Heritage Council of Victoria (HCV) grants permanent protection to the Euroa Goods Shed.

According to Mr Kloft, who owns the mechanical workshop on Railway Street, the ARTC had initially signalled interest in buying the property, “stringing him along” until late last year, when they informed it was unlikely they would buy it.

However, Mr Kloft said the ARTC has now told him they might be a potential buyer after all, as they wait for HCV to decide whether to place the 150-year-old Euroa Goods Shed on Victoria’s heritage register.

This would represent a double-win for community group EuroaConnect, who have been pushing for the ARTC to buy Mr Kloft’s building to incorporate into Euroa’s new railway precinct, and also pushing to prevent

the ARTC from demolishing the goods shed.

HCV is due to decide in the coming weeks whether to place the shed permanently on the heritage register after they issued an interim protection order in November 2023 to prevent its demolition, following a submission from EuroaConnect outlining the shed’s heritage value.

The ARTC had previously said the goods shed needs to be removed because the relocated station platform will encroach on it when they upgrade Euroa Railway Station for their Inland Rail network.

The ARTC commissioned engineering firm Sterling to assess the safety of the shed, who recommended the shed be removed within five months because it posed a safety risk, but EuroaConnect has claimed other engineers have refuted this.

In November last year, the ARTC revealed a proposed design for the new Euroa Railway Station precinct; the proposed precinct did not include Mr Kloft’s build-

ing and the station entrance faced the Euroa Hotel.

Members of EuroaConnect, as well as another community group, DESIGNEuroa, have argued a superior design would locate the station entrance at Mr Kloft’s building, so it would directly face Euroa’s business and shopping district, Binney Street.

Late last month, shortly after Mr Kloft closed up the shop due to his retirement, EuroaConnect and DESIGNEuroa “took over” the building, covering the iconic shopfront with a large white sheet.

For about two weeks, the groups projected a video onto the white sheet at night with their vision of how the ARTC could replace Mr Kloft’s building with a pedestrian underpass, which the groups are calling “BinneyLink”. “[It would be a] big pedestrian walkway where Klofty’s is – you would just keep walking and it would take you underneath the railway line and bring you up to the

EuroaConnect is now displaying the video during the daytime on a screen in an empty Binney Street shopfront.

“[Franz Kloft] has worked very hard and serviced our community for a long time,” EuroaConnect member Ann Shovelton said.

“It would be good if he was able to sell that space to the ARTC…because it’s a perfect entrance to Euroa – to have that clear view to connect both sides of Euroa.”

An ARTC Inland Rail spokesman said they were

unable to speculate on what may or may not happen.

“Property is only acquired if it’s necessary for the delivery of Inland Rail,” he said.

“The project avoids acquiring and impacting on properties and businesses that are not required to build Inland Rail.

“Discussions with property landowners are confidential and ongoing.”

“I’m very proud of what I’ve done, because I started off with nothing and worked hard,” Mr Kloft said.

“I used to do a lot of RACV breakdowns at night-time after work [and] worked night-times and weekends to make ends meet.”

Business at Franz Kloft Mechanical Repairs was slow at first – “you can sit there for two days and do nothing” – but he said it picked up after five or six years, and eventually he built up a loyal customer base.

He said he also gained many new customers in the last two or three years, since the pandemic, as Melbournites flocked to the country in search of a lifestyle change.

But all good things must come to an end.

“The body says it’s time – things are aching, and

I’m starting to lose a bit of interest, too, with all the computerised stuff and electronic stuff,” Mr Kloft said.

“I’m too old to catch up on that sort of stuff.”

He said new cars are being made with electronic start buttons in place of key ignitions, as well as electric handbrakes, and “it’s getting harder and harder” to identify the faults when these electronics malfunction.

Now he is retired, Mr Kloft is looking forward to “sleeping in for a start, and then just relaxing”.

He will spend some time gardening at his two-acre garden on his Violet Town property and also plans to rest after operations on his knee and shoulder, which are scheduled for this year.

Rail regarding whether they will purchase the building to incorporate into the new Euroa railway precinct.

Euroa’s Bernie Walker said he had been a loyal, longtime customer of Mr Kloft “because of the good service, and I like Franz as a person – he’s a good bloke”.

“I wish some young fellow would buy the business and continue, but I don’t know whether that’ll happen,” he said.

Another long-time customer, Creighton’s Creek’s Ann Shovelton, said she was sad to hear of his retirement.

“He’s just been a very good mechanic and very happy to point out what we have to do next, or whether we have to do anything at all – just being constantly aware of our needs,” she said.

“However, I understand people retire, so I do wish him well.”

TWO more Strathbogie Shire townships have prepared their Local Emergency Action Plans (LEAPs) as part of the LEAPing into Resilience project.

Euroa and Avenel now have their own LEAP document to follow or refer to in the event of an emergency, joining Violet town, who completed their plan last year.

The plans were developed through community steering committees working with council, as well as emergency agencies including CFA, VicSES, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police.

According to council, the LEAPing into Resilience project empowers people to respond and recover from emergencies by highlighting the risks facing their community and ways they can better prepare for emergencies.

Strathbogie Shire Administrator Peter Stephenson said it was a credit to all the volunteers who had put in around 12 months’ work to complete the plans.

“These communities are now better able to respond during times of fire, flood or other emergencies,” he said.

“These towns now have a reference document to direct residents in the event of an emergency.

“Being prepared is incredibly important – we know it can save lives.”

Strathbogie community members recently signed up to join their local steering committee and Nagambie residents will be encouraged to do the same soon.

Council has collaborated with Murrindindi and Mansfield Shire councils

to deliver the project thanks to a Federal Government grant.

The project will eventually result in the production of five LEAPs prepared for each of the above municipalities.

Council has reported that Avenel resident John Thomson said the group worked enthusiastically to prepare the document that would guide residents should the need arrive.

“We worked methodically to identify all the contact details for emergency services and even if there was a flood where we could get sandbags,” he said.

“Included in our pack of information as well, is a document that asks what residents would do in the first 72 hours of an emergency. We will be encouraging residents to consider and make that plan now not during an emergency.”

Businesses disrupted by floods once again Minor flooding g came 15 months after major j floods in October 2022

By DIANE GRANT JUST 15 months after the devastating October 2022 floods hit our region, heavy rainfall caused minor flooding in badly hit regions around Nagambie once again early last week, following a weather event that saw significant flooding in parts of Victoria including Seymour and Yea. Go Adventure Nagambie, Discovery Park Nagambie, Wacky Water splash park and Michelton winery were among affected Nagambie businesses.

Go Adventure Nagambie owners Kimberleigh and Lee Rowland said their adventure park on Loddings Lane was hit hard again.

“We tried to take out as much equipment as we could before the flood waters hit us again,” Ms Rowland told the Gazette.

“The waters did not reach as high as in 2022 but still have caused us damage once again to which we have to foot the bill ourselves as we do not have insurance now as we are regarded as being in a flood area.

“This has caused lots of problems to our business and family situation.

“We are going out Friday [January 12] to establish pumps and electricity again now the water has receded enough for us to do a clean up.”

Mr Rowland said that unfortunately, the week had been set to be “our busiest, as we were booked out for rowing camps and bookings of our tinny boats...that has now all been cancelled”.

“We are still cleaning up from the 2022 floods and now this has set us back again, but we hope to reopen in some form on December 13,” he said.

Discovery Park Nagambie, which had only recently opened after a 14-month restoration of their tourist park following the October 2022 floods, was forced to temporarily close again.

However, a Discovery Park spokesman was optimistic about the park’s future, telling the Gazette last week initial inspections showed “minimal impacts” to the Nagambie property and infrastructure.

The Graytown area was cut off from Nagambie for a few days.

Wirrate Fire Brigade captain Hamish Fletcher said his team had learnt lessons from the October 2022 floods to better manage the recent floods.

“This time we took advance precautions to remove equipment from our fire shed so that we did not suffer the same flood problems we did in October 2022,” he said.

“I kept in contact with the Incident Control Centre in Shepparton to keep up to date what the waters were doing.”

Government support offered for flood and storm recovery STATE and federal governments’ funded disaster assistance is available for communities impacted by the Victorian floods and storms that commenced on December 24, 2023, including the Strathbogie Shire LGA. A Strathbogie Shire Council spokesperson said council welcomes any external funding and financial assistance following the recent extreme weather events, and council is in the process of determining eligibility.

Subject to eligibility, council said they may use the funds for:  removal of storm debris on public roads during storm;

“Council staff have been working hard on the clean-up process with our priority ensuring council-managed roads were reopened in a timely fashion,” a council spokesperson said.

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said by making emergency relief assistance available, it goes some way to help with the immediate needs of Victorians who in many cases are still recovering from previous significant emergency events in recent years.

CFA seeks citizen scientists to tackle grass curing

Community Information Free storm-related green waste disposal extended until January 28, 2024 Strathbogie Shire Council is offering complimentary disposal services for storm-related green waste until January 14 as part of a proactive response to recent storms. This initiative aims to assist residents in clearing debris caused by storm damage.

The free service has been extended for a period of two weeks to Sunday, January 28, residents can benefit from complimentary storm-related green waste disposal services at Violet Town, Euroa, Avenel, and Nagambie Transfer Stations during normal operating hours.

It is important for the community to understand that this temporary free service is only for organic stormrelated debris, including branches and trees, and is not applicable to general gardening waste.

This complimentary service does not apply to commercial contractors.

Regular charges will still apply to general, non-green waste resulting from storm damage if customers request disposal.

If you have already visited your local transfer station to dispose of storm-related green waste between Wednesday, January 3 to Friday, January 5, please contact Council on 1800 065 993.

A reminder to community to place smaller green waste into your organic (green) bin to be collected as per your normal kerbside service.

“We can’t rely on satellite imagery alone.”

Dr Wright said satellite imagery is the best performing model available, but it can overestimate and underestimate the curing levels.

“Across bare sand and soil, the model over-estimates curing,” she said..

“In areas of new growth from rainfall, the satellite sensor can pick up the green growth and underestimate curing.

This year we’ve also include the opportunity to pitch infrastructure projects.

The pitch period will close at 5pm on Friday, February 23, 2024.

We have established a Flood Recovery Team to provide support to those whose homes or businesses in our Shire have been impacted by flood.

CFA is calling on Victorians to become “citizen scientists” to help contribute critical information about the state’s fire risk.

The 2023-24 fire season is expected to be hotter and drier than recent years and grassland curing observers play a vital role in collecting ground information.

The ground observations are combined with satellite imagery to produce maps that show how dry the grass is across Victoria.

CFA remote sensing analyst Dr Danielle Wright said CFA needs more observers trained to provide readings of grass curing.

“There are parts of the state where we really need more eyes on the ground

“Not normal”: Nagambie residents amazed by anticrepuscular rays

By DARREN CHAITMAN INCREDIBLE photos shared on the Nagambie Community Noticeboard Facebook page depict anticrepuscular rays, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

At least 16 people from Nagambie and nearby areas, as well as from as far as Albury, posted pictures of the phenomenon last Friday.

Some online commenters called the images, which appear to show a triangular split in the sky, “strange” and “not normal”.

Many theorised the images showed crepuscular rays.

But Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines told The Euroa Gazette he believed the pictures showed “anticrepuscular rays, something of a cousin to the more commonly seen crepuscular rays”.

“This is a bit of an optical illusion: the lines are parallel lines despite what it looks like. “[One of the pictures] looks like the cloud is causing a shadow which splits the light from the sun into the two beams/rays, which then appear to converge in the distance (similar to how a set of train tracks would appear to converge off in the distance, even though we know they don’t).”

Mr Hines suggested that to confirm with certainty these are anticrepuscular rays, The Euroa Gazette should ask the photographers if they were facing away from the sun while taking the images.

Three photographers have since confirmed the images were taken while facing away from the sun.

Some Facebook commenters poked fun at the situation.

“Looks [like] the tin foil hat company I’m gunna start should be booming,” one wrote.

Another posted an edited photo of a UFO abducting a cow where the light splits.

Strathbogie Shire to mark Australia Day with community celebrations

By DARREN CHAITMAN NEXT week, Strathbogie Shire towns will celebrate Australia Day for the first time since council’s controversial decision last year to withdraw its support for and participation in local Australia Day celebrations.

The decision was reached following a letter from the Taungurung Land and Waters Council which urged council to reconsider its involvement in “celebrating a day which would continue to isolate and segregate the Taungurung people on their own Country”.

But council’s lack of support has not proved a major hurdle nor deterred event organisers in most towns, with the following events scheduled across the shire.

EUROA Two events are scheduled in Euroa: breakfast at the Euroa Newsagency, and a celebration organised by Euroa’s Australia Day Committee.

The free breakfast at Euroa Newsagency, hosted and sponsored by Lorraine and Neville Mawson, will run from 6.30am to 8.30am on January 26.

Musician Greg Dudley, as

well as local bush poets, will perform.

Neville Mawson said the breakfast is an annual tradition, having started in 2012 and only missing one year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Mawson said it was “amazing how popular it was last year” and he thought council’s discussions regarding Australia Day may have ironically increased interest in the event.

Another event, a celebration and awards ceremony, will begin at 11am at Lions Park, Clifton Street.

Local band The Eurockafellas will perform and Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland will be the guest speaker.

A free barbecue will follow the official ceremony.

Euroa’s Australia Day Committee president Frank York said Australia Day award winners will be decided by the committee, based on community nominations.

The event will be sponsored by the Euroa Lions Club, Euroa Third Age Club and individual donors.

LONGWOOD In Longwood, a free barbecue will follow live entertainment starting at 5.30pm at the Longwood Community Centre.

Attendees are invited to bring along an Australianathemed decorated cake, to participate in Longwood’s famous decorated cake competition.

ter said the cakes will be auctioned to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Longwood CFA captain Sean Hammond will be the auctioneer.

An Australia Day awards ceremony will follow the barbecue, with recipients chosen by the Longwood Community Centre committee of management.

Cake competition winners will be announced at the end of the ceremony.

AVENEL Avenel’s Australia Day event, sponsored by Avenel Active, will be held from 9.30am to 11am at Jubilee Park.

Good samaritan clears tree debris from storm

Innocent children are the victims of conflict

ON the evening of January 2, the mini cyclone that ripped through the area was a terrifying sight to behold for those in and around Euroa.

There is still evidence of extensive damage, especially to trees, everywhere in the district.

That evening, multiple huge limbs from the enormous nature strip trees outside my property on Euroa-Mansfield Road blocked the entrance and I resigned myself to probably not being able to go out until they were cleared.

However, as soon as there was a break in the rain, the limbs were miraculously moved to the sides by a good samaritan(s).

It seemed that one minute they were there and a short time later, they weren’t.

I didn’t see who it was as I was in another room, but wish to convey my heartfelt thanks for their generosity of spirit in helping me on that dreadful night.

It was very much appreciated, thank you.

Jeff Starkey does a great job telling local history I AM presently enjoying the book by local historian Jeff Starkey.

It is a view of Australia, in this local area, not often seen in books I’ve read in the past, describing the almost innocent attitude of the people of the time, the hardworking farming community caught up in a ten-year drought, with little knowledge or care of what lay ahead.

Jeff does a great job in exploring the myths of history in his chapters on Gallipoli and the ineptness of generals in

charge at the time.

I feel history may repeat.

If we are aware of the past, we can understand our future.

Our country is divided, with many groups and causes that were unheard of a decade or two ago.

This Australia Day, let’s be thankful for our fathers and grandfathers, who fought for the wonderful country we live in.

As for the book “The Longest Shadow”, I feel it ought to be in every school library across Australia.

By JOAN OSBOURNE WISHING all members a very happy new year and hoping 2024 will be a better year for all of us – the hall is nearly ready an Activities will recommence there in the New Year – please watch out for information about dates.

Christmas was celebrated by members of the Euroa Third Age Club on Tuesday, December 12 with a beautiful two-course lunch at the Euroa Hotel, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

A big thank you to the staff for

their great service and to Lyn and her team who decorated the tables.

It was also the time that life membership of the club was awarded to two very special members who have done so much for the club in decorating the hall for various functions but particularly Christmas over the years.

Lyn Fischer and her late husband Len, with the able assistance of Judy Williamson, have provided members with beautifully decorated tables and hall for parties and dances and other functions.

Unfortunately, Judy was not there to receive her certificate but this will be presented in the new year.

Unfortunately it has also been a sad time with the passing of Margaret Berry who had been a member for many years.

Margaret as many would know was a well loved member of the Longwood Senior Citizens but joined the Third Age Club to add her great knowledge and experience in assisting the committee in very many ways.

Margaret, you will always be greatly missed by those who knew you.

The club was open for Jimmy Davidson’s New Year’s Eve concert featuring Jimmy, Gayle Mawson and Alistair McLean and it was a wonderful night, thoroughly enjoyed by all who were there.

A great way to start the new year.

The monthly lunches will recommence in February at Flam Sham on Thursday, February 8 at 12pm.

A PETITION calling for more reliable power supply in Euroa and nearby areas, created by Euroa Cararvan Park owner Kristy Hourigan, had reached 563 signatures on Monday morning, with the number still growing.

In a description of the online petition on change.org, Ms Hourigan wrote that frequent power disruptions have severely impacted local businesses, including her own, “resulting in significant financial losses”.

“Moreover, the battery backup for phone towers also runs out during these extended periods without power,” she wrote.

“This poses a serious risk as it impedes communication during emergencies.”

The petition is the latest expression of growing community frustration over frequent power outages impacting Strathbogie Shire towns and surrounding districts, including five major unplanned outages since November.

Ms Hourigan was a Strathbogie Shire councillor until she resigned in July last year, and in 2022 ran as a Victorian Nationals candidate for Euroa.

CALLING FOR ACTION: A petition created by former councillor and Euroa Caravan Park owner Kristy Hourigan, calling for more reliable power supply in Euroa and nearby areas, had reached 563 signatures on Monday morning.

Her petition calls on AusNet to take immediate action to fix the power supply.

“Sign this petition if you believe that we deserve better from AusNet and our elected representatives; sign if you believe in the right for all businesses in Euroa VIC to operate without fear of unexpected closures due to unexplained power failures,” she wrote.

Several residents posted comments on change.org explaining why they signed the petition.

“We rely on power to keep our young kids and older generations safe and well in hot weather and need to be able to plan, prepare and actually cook meals without power outages,” Melissa Baker wrote.

“So much wasted food due to

power outages and most families cannot afford the extra costs of losing food.”

Another signatory, Jacqui Thomson, called the situation “a joke”, adding, “we are not a third world country”.

Claire Donnelly wrote she is concerned for the safety of her family living in Euroa, “especially when you lose phone coverage as well as power”.

Ms Hourigan also sent letters to Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes and AusNet, in which she appealed for their urgent help to fix the region’s unreliable power supply.

Ms Cleeland has been outspoken regarding the issue on social media and in comments made to media outlets including this masthead; she has also written to the CEO of AusNet and has pledged to raise the issue in parliament.

Last week, in a comment made to this masthead, an AusNet spokesperson apologised to Euroa and surrounding areas for the frequent power outages, saying the majority had been weather-related.

Earlier this year, Ms Symes did not respond to a request for comment regarding this issue.

Haines to offer insight as speaker at housing summit

By STEVE KELLY INDI MP Helen Haines will be a guest speaker at the National Regional Housing Summit in Canberra when it’s held next month.

Dr Haines has worked with co-host Regional Australia Institute to help bring the summit to fruition and she will be one of seven guest speakers at the event.

Real Estate Institute of Australia and Master Builders Australia are also hosting the summit.

It will look at what some regional leaders are crafting to tackle housing challenges in their region.

tions through policy and investment will be addressed, along with various regional housing market clusters identified through RAI’s research.

The event on February 9 will convene local governments and communities, federal and state governments, industry and peak body representatives, and the not-forprofit sector to identify solutions and ensure the region’s housing needs are understood and reflected in new and emerging housing policy and investment.

In 2023, Dr Haines introduced her ‘Unlocking Regional Housing Bill’ which specifically sought to address

the housing crisis in regional, rural and remote Australia, by making funding easier to access and requiring at least 30 per cent of funding to go to regional, rural and remote Australia.

However, her amendments were rejected in parliament despite one in three people living outside large cities in Australia.

Dr Haines explained at the time that without legislation that ensures regional Australia is explicitly considered with funding, there is no guarantee that the billions of dollars announced for housing will flow to regional Australia, and the communities where it is needed most.

NAB executive Krissie Jones said a range of support measures – from grants to loan payment deferrals and other relief measures – were in place to help NAB customers left devastated by the flooding.

“To impacted families, communities and businesses who have suffered damage to their homes, farms and premises: we are here to help,” Ms Jones said.

“This will be a testing time for our communities and we’re standing by them, providing immediate assistance, and making $1000 grants available to help those most affected.

“NAB customers impacted in Victoria are encouraged to contact us as soon as possible.”

Portions of a native plant reserve allegedly destroyed by council

By DARREN CHAITMAN SECTIONS of a native plant reserve on Berrys Lane in Longwood has allegedly been destroyed by Strathbogie Shire Council workers in the process of grading the road.

Kathryn Goodall, a nurse and farmer who lives on Berrys Lane, posted pictures and a description of the alleged destruction on the Longwood Community Noticeboard Facebook group on Saturday. “[The council workers] wiped out so many native grasses, shrubs and trees (some newly planted still in plant ‘protectors’),” she wrote in the Facebook post.

She told The Euroa Gazette she believed the grading work last week may have been an attempt to improve the road’s drainage, which she believed was unnecessary.

“The grade has gone a bit over the top and just taken out everything, a huge section of the sides of the road,” she said.

“I was angry but I was very sad, too, because … some of it in the past had been planted by my husband’s grandmother.

After her discovery, Ms Goodall rang council, and workers promptly attended the site to inspect what had happened.

She said a council officer apologised and told her he would stop it from happening again on other roads.

“The only comment … is that our roadsides are often the last remnants of particular vegetation types in our district,” Ms

Olive said.

“They’re often not represented in reserves, and they’re often not intact as soon as they’re on farms.

“Some of those roadsides are the last intact examples you have of vegetation locally, so, they’re really critical.”

Strathbogie Shire Council was contacted for comment but did not respond by deadline.

By DARREN CHAITMAN LOCAL stables including Blue Gum Farm (Euroa) and Longwood Thoroughbred Farm (Longwood) have achieved strong sales at Magic Millions, held in the Gold Coast this month.

The highlight for Blue Gum Farm was the sale of a Snitzel colt for $1.3 million to a New Zealand buyer, David Ellis.

“At the end of the day, the horse was a lovely animal and he presented really well and made fantastic money,” Blue Gum Farm owner Sean Dingwall told the Gazette.

“He’s got a tremendous pedigree, and most of the people that looked at him felt that he was the closest colt that they’ve seen to the stallion for a very long time – he presented very much in the mould of the stallion.”

Mr Dingwall said it had been the first time Blue Gum stepped outside of Victoria to sell horses and they finished in the top ten vendors on average – a strong achievement.

“It was a tough two weeks because in the midst of it we had the storms in Euroa, and Blue Gum dug in and got through it – it was fantastic,” he said.

The highlight was the sale of a Wootton Bassett colt for $750,000 to Michael Freedman Racing and Gandharvi Racing.

“It was just a really nice colt that had power and strength, but also very athletic,” Mr Christian said.

“It was a buoyant sale.

“The early part of the sale was probably the strongest part of the sale, but overall I think given the economic environment,

it was a strong sale.”

Nagambie’s Yulong Stud, owned by billionaire Yuesheng Zhang, also participated as a vendor in the sale, selling over 30 yearlings including one to Lindsay Park for $400,000.

Euroa’s Lindsay Park participated in the sales as a buyer.

Bloodstock manager Josh Rix said it took Lindsay Park “a little while to get warmed up” because the first two days of the sale were “extremely competi-

tive” – but after that, the stable found their mark and had a great buying campaign.

“We ended up sending home 14 outstanding yearlings consisting of nine colts and five fillies ranging in price from $100,000 to $520,000, by some of Australia’s most successful sires such as Written Tycoon, Fastnet Rock and Deep Field,” he said.

“We can’t wait to see our purchases stepping off the trucks and onto the tracks in 2024.”

THROUGHOUT the fox bounty season Al Brown finds himself digging holes to bury scalped foxes.

That’s when he’s not burning the carcasses that routinely turn up on his property during the season.

Al and his wife Nerida, cattle farmers on a 600 acre property in Harston, a small town near Tatura, are forced to patrol and monitor irrigation channels and boundary fence lines, and monitor crop paddocks, to make sure the scalped and gutted carcasses don’t represent a biosecurity threat to the couples’ beef enterprise, their own health and wellbeing, and that of their pets.

The problem has been ongoing for the last decade, but has escalated in recent years with the Browns having to contend with the disposal of dumped carcasses on a regular basis.

“Initially the foxes were clamped so tightly to the top wire of the boundary fence, that we either had to use a chainsaw to remove the legs to remove the body or the fence wire had to be cut and restrained,” Nerida said.

“Then it was scalped foxes dumped near our entrance gate and along the fence lines and in the irrigation channels.

“Now, the foxes are scalped and gutted, and dumped in increasing numbers.

“It begins to get you down.

“We should not have to cope with this.”

Nerida estimates that Al deals on average with around 20 dead foxes during bounty season which runs from March through to October, with random carcasses also strewn on the property outside of the collection dates.

Although the Browns themselves do not shoot foxes they understand the importance of the scheme, with Victoria the only state to have its own fox bounty program.

In the 2023 season, Agriculture Victoria received 82,799 fox scalps from 1452 applicants, with the program a vital part of pest management strategy with foxes widespread and established.

The Browns are not suggesting that the policy itself is flawed.

Their primary concern is the dumping of carcasses, which represent a by-product of the program, and they want Agriculture Victoria to address the issue.

“Especially when biosecurity is at the forefront of most farmers’ minds,” Nerida said.

Nerida and Al have repeatedly sought help from a variety of government agencies, first approaching Agriculture Victoria (AgVic), before being referred on to the Environmental Protection Authority; the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action; and then directed to local council, the RSPCA and even the Game Management Authority, despite many of these agencies having little to no jurisdiction in the field.

“It’s been dragging on since early May, and it just feels that every agency I speak to passes the buck,” Nerida said.

“Apparently there is either no policy or jurisdiction covering this significant biosecurity concern, and we’re thoroughly sick of it.

“It shouldn’t be up to as as the landowner to enforce the safe disposal of carcasses that have been dumped on our property as the result of a policy short sight.

“Who takes responsibility?”

Harston’s local council is the City of Greater Shepparton and the couple’s farm falls under the electoral district of Euroa.

Al has lived there his whole life.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland finds the situation to be cause for significant concern.

“My office and I deal with hundreds of constituent concerns each week, but this one, in particular, was very alarming,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This situation can create serious biosecurity concerns, with water sources and livestock being in close proximity to the scalped carcasses.

“We’ve seen an uptick in biosecurity incidents across the region recently, with farm trespassing, veterinarian shortages, and emergency animal diseases all being prevalent in recent years.

“It remains so important to me – and the entire Nationals party – to ensure situations like this are avoided.

“Sadly, Ms Brown has struggled to get a straight answer from several government agencies and departments, so we are trying to assist her with this situation.”

Ms Cleeland confirmed that she had raised Ms Brown’s concerns with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and was hoping to see some progress in the near future.

However, when the EPA was contacted by North East Media in regards to policing the dumping of carcasses, they confirmed that it was an AgVic initiative and that AgVic was responsible for delivering the program.

This is despite the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) being listed as the agency responsible for enforcing the terms and conditions of the bounty and investigating offences under the Environment Protection Act, with reports of illegal rubbish dumping - which includes animal carcasses - to be made to the authority.

“Everyone has a duty to protect the environment and we expect those involved in the fox bounty program to fulfill their obligation to ensure the proper disposal of fox carcasses harvested for the program,” the EPA spokesperson said.

Agriculture Victoria said that the fox bounty program plays an important role helping farmers to protect their livestock from major predators and there is the expectation that everyone participating in the program acts responsibly when disposing of carcasses.

Every bounty applicant is verbally asked whether they have complied with the terms and conditions and they must also sign a declaration, which pertains amongst other things to the responsible disposal of carcasses.

“Hunters should determine how fox (and wild dog) carcasses will be disposed of prior to their collection – whether that is the farm or collection site on which it was taken, as long as the burial site does not adversely impact cultural heritage, land, surface waters, groundwaters and air quality in regards to odour,” the Agriculture Victoria spokesperson said.

Agriculture Victoria did confirm that the number of carcasses submitted for the bounty compared to complaints received was relatively low.

However complaints still exist, and the question remains as to what governing body addresses these complaints.

“The dumping of fox carcasses affects the integrity of the Victorian fox bounty program and reflects poorly on hunters – further, it is a breach of the bounty terms and conditions,” the spokesperson said.

Goulburn Valley Water installs hydration stations throughout region Euora’s Rotaryy Park is home to the newest hydration y station ALL 13 towns with a Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) drinking water supply in the Strathbogie and Mitchell shires now have permanent hydration stations in a community space, GVW has announced.

The last of the 15 stations that are now serving the region was installed in June when a partnership with Euroa Village Farmers Market and the Strathbogie Shire saw the Rotary Park at Euroa become home to the newest hydration station.

In the last year, another four new stations have been installed in partnerships with councils and community groups – at the Nagambie Lakes Information Centre, Strathbogie Hall, Pyalong Recreation Reserve and Waterford Park Recreation Reserve.

“Summer months mean more people are out and about so ensuring there is access to free water in community spaces will help people stay hydrated and drink more water in warmer weather,” Goulburn Valley Water managing director Steve Capewell said.

“Using these hydration stations also helps us reduce single use plastic by encouraging people to bring their own reusable bottle to fill up while they out and about.

“More than 373 million plastic bottles go to landfill every year across Australia, so these stations create an easy way for us to make more environmentally friendly water refill choices.”

Community groups have partnered with GVW to install several hydration stations in the region, including Seymour’s King’s Park Reserve, the Violet Town Market, and Wandong’s LB Davern Reserve committees.

The latest additions to the network of drinking fountains adds to the collection of community facilities that stretch from Euroa in the North East to Pyalong in the west and as far south as Heathcote Junction.

A Strathbogie Shire Council spokesman said the GVW hydration stations had done a lot more than just provide residents and visitors to Strathbogie Shire with free, quality tap water.

Over 200,000 containers deposited in shire OVER 100 million containers have been returned in Victoria since the roll-out of the Container Deposit Scheme, with 203,051 containers returned in the Strathbogie Shire LGA. Lachlan Miller, office manager at Euroa Timber Co – one of Euroa’s container deposit locations – said “we’ve been getting a lot of people” and it has been “pretty full on” since the rollout last year.

He said at first, the demand was a bit overwhelming, but it has since died down somewhat.

“We had a lot of big recycling bags everywhere – it was looking like a little bit of tip at one point,” he said.

“At the start was the busiest because people who had been putting up for years and years all put in at once.”

the scheme, according to the State Government.

“During the flooding, the S&DAS had artworks that were damaged and lost,” Ms MacDonald said.

“Fortunately, we were able to save many works through a collaboration with the Melbourne University Grimwald Centre, which saw a team of conservators visit Seymour.

“These professional restorers and students not only saved artworks from the gallery, but other important items from other community groups and the public who were also impacted by the floods.

Ms MacDonald said the temporary closure of the gallery made the S&DAS think outside the box and look for ways to take art into other spaces.

“We are excited at having the opportunity to hold an exhibition in Strathbogie Shire Council’s innovative ARTBOX, taking member’s artworks out of gallery settings and directly to the community,” she said.

“Out of the Box” runs until 30 January 2024 at Jacobson Outlook, Nagambie.”

ANOTHER exhibition has landed in ARTBOX, council’s mobile exhibition space, which is now stationed in Nagambie following a stint in Avenel.

The exhibition, named “Out of the Box”, features artists from the Seymour and District Art Society (S&DAS).

Founded in 1987 by local artists in the north central Victoria region, S&DAS encourages and supports people who are interested in creative arts, and promotes artistic endeavours in the broader community.

S&DAS president Terri MacDonald described “Out of the Box” to council as an exhibition of artworks by members of the S&DAS, which explores various themes and media.

“The exhibition promotes the diversity Victorian regional art has to offer,” she told Strathbogie Shire Council.

The Courthouse Gallery in Seymour, where the group usually resides, was severely impacted by the 2022 floods.

As a result, the gallery has been closed for more than 12 months while

Alexandra’s Mark Spencer too good for the AA graders

By JOHN KING B GRADE shooter Mark Spencer out shot the three AA grade shooters to win the Overall Koala Cherries Double Barrel Championship on Sunday.

The 30 target event saw for qualifiers, Mark, Brett Ford, Keith Willet and Euroa’s Tony Rohrlach.

Meet in the final shoot off with Mark shooting a further 40 targets straight to score 70/70 and be the outright winner from Wangaratta’s Keith Willet.

The Single Barrel Championship was won outright

by Keith Willet, who was enjoying his day’s shooting, by scoring 29/30 in this challenging event.

The final event, the Club Handicap saw Ian Larner from Alexandra succeed with a final score of 21/21.

By DAVID LOVE THE Nagambie golf course was closed for two days during the week after an exceptional amount of rain made a couple of the holes not accessible, but by competition on Sunday all 18 hole were playable and the course could not have been

greener for the time of year with the players treated to some fantastic lies and conditions.

A good turn out of 24 players tee it up with 10 away due to the start of the Summer pennant series.

The winning score of 39 stableford points was Shaun Spicer taking advantage of the lush fairways and neat surrounds to claim his first victory for sometime.

Only one point back was Hugh Lawrence finding form to card 38 points, a freed up swing and solid ball striking helping him go two better than handicap.

The third place finisher was the very consistent Jim Doyle with 37 beating great clubman Bill Leviston on count back also 37.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Jeremy Ezard hitting the narrow green on the third and Glen Evans with a stylish shot to claim the 16th.

Next week’s golf at Nagambie will be a par event with J Ezard on office duty and C Roberts in the bar.

The GMGA 2024 summer pennant season opening round was played at the Shepparton golf club where the Nagambie team had the unenviable task of taking on the hosts, unfortunately Nagambie lost 4 1/2 to 1/2 making there prospects for the remainder of the season difficult due to the shortness of the qualifying rounds, three in total.

Euroa faces tough loss against Mooroopna in D grade clash EUROA CRICKET CLUB A GRADE

By JACK WILSON IN the latest round of the Haisman Shield, Euroa A grade demonstrated their prowess as they clashed with the Nagambie local side in a thrilling encounter.

Despite captain Scott Hamilton losing the toss, Euroa bowlers capitalised on the favorable conditions of the hard pitch, suitable for both bat and ball.

Nagambie opted to bat first but faced early challenges, finding themselves at 4-40 after the initial 20 overs.

James Lloyd and Ryan Hill emerged as the chief destroyers for Euroa, claiming two wickets each.

Vaughan Kirk joined the assault, securing his first wicket and leaving Nagambie at 5-44 after 23 overs.

The turning point came when Lloyd returned to the bowling attack, breaking a crucial 91-run partnership for the sixth wicket and striking again two overs later to reduce Nagambie to 7-135.

Lloyd, displaying both skill and strategy, also contributed a run-out off

his own bowling.

Jye Bjorksten and Liam Phillips efficiently cleaned up the tail, restricting Nagambie to a total of 181 runs.

Facing a challenging 18over period at the end of the day, Euroa’s batsmen showed resilience.

By JACK WILSON IN a challenging encounter at Memorial Oval during Round 10 of the D grade competition, Euroa played host to Mooroopna.

Jake Penman, the captain for the day, won the toss and elected to bat first on a lively pitch.

The early stages proved challenging for Euroa as they found themselves at 3/14 by the 10-over mark.

However, Ben Jones and Jake Penman steadied the ship, forging a valuable 45-run partnership before Jones was caught at point.

Euroa continued to accumulate runs, with Haiden and Levi Berry’s seventh wicket partnership contributing an additional 22 runs.

Unfortunately, Euroa faced a late collapse, losing their last four wickets for just eight runs, setting Mooroopna a target of 114.

Euroa’s bowlers fought hard, and Jake Penman made an impactful start to the second innings by claiming a wicket off the third ball, with Haiden Berry taking a stunning catch at second slip.

Despite the initial breakthrough, Euroa’s bowlers

faced a resilient Mooroopna batting line-up.

The hosts managed to secure a breakthrough wicket with a fantastic catch from Matt Lawrence, but it turned out to be the last wicket they could claim.

Mooroopna chased down the target with 16 overs remaining, dealing Euroa a tough loss in this D grade encounter.

Looking ahead, Euroa D Grade will be hosting Tatura at Memorial Oval next Saturday at 12.30pm.

The team is determined to bounce back and secure a positive outcome in the upcoming fixture.

By TIM JACKSON ON Friday night saw the recommencement of the Cardamone Real Estate under 16 cricket competition, where Euroa travelled to Tatura to play 25 over game format.

The conditions for the afternoon were hot and humid.

After losing the toss Euroa were sent to field.

An under-strength Euroa side with only nine lads available for selection, saw the call up of Jimmy Jackson to make his debut and a substitute fielder from Tatura to make up the side.

Euroa lads set out to tackle their task with a good opening spell from Walter Jackson and Ollie Swain contained Tatura to 1 for 18 after the first 6 overs.

Tatura started to gain momentum striking boundaries all around the ground.

At drinks Tatura were 1 for 48, the run rate just hovering under four runs per over.

Euroa were playing extremely well under very hot conditions against a well-structured Tatura side.

In a seesawing second 12 overs with both sides throwing counter punches, a tight bowling from Cale Robertson, Tom White and Cooper Goodall restricted the strong Tatura side to 117 after 25 overs.

Chasing 117 runs to win

the Euroa lads took to their assignment run rate just under five runs per over from the start Tatura applied the bow torch straight away to the Euroa lads with a steady stream of wickets falling at consistent intervals.

The Euroa lads were in a bit of trouble at drinks after 13 overs, Euroa was 3/28 with 89 runs to chase down in the last 12 overs with the run rate up to seven runs per over.

Walter Jackson and Ethan Saxon put on a steady partnership to have the target in sight but a good tight bowling performance from Tatura lads and good fielding saw the target just out of reach for the Euroa boys.

No doubt the conditions early in the day played a big part on the performance with the bat , most of the boys looking very exhausted.

Euroa Everest - A once in a lifetime cycling feat Cyclists conquer Mount Everest elevation equivalent in a single day DURING the pre-Christmas rush when most people are frantically completing their shopping duties, a different breed of enthusiasts emerged dedicated cyclists who conquered the equivalent of Mount Everest in elevation metres gained in a single day.

On December 22 riders found themselves reflecting, “Well, how did I get here?”

This question resonated among the participants of the Euroa Everest, an extraordinary cycling challenge unfurling on the Kelvin View Short KOM Strava segment.

For those unfamiliar with “Everesting,” it entails selecting any hill globally and cycling repeats of it in a single session until achieving a cumulative elevation gain of

Sleep is forbidden, and, unofficially, no “sticky bottles” are allowed (receiving a tow from a car or follow bike rider).

Michael Kanizay from the Brunswick cycling club approached the Euroa Everest as a well-considered decision, drawing inspiration from diverse sources.

The journey commenced with a book on Everesting, narrating the exploits of George Mallory’s grandson.

Following that, achievements of professional cyclists like Lachlan Morton, Phil Gaimon, Alberto Contador, and

the current record holder, Ronan McLaughlin, intensified his determination.

The Euroa Everest germinated during a reconnaissance ride in the Strathbogie Ranges, where the descent from Strathbogie to Euroa etched an indelible impression.

The selected climb was the Kelvin View Short KOM, a 3km ascent with 218 meters of vertical gain.

Accompanied by a dedicated and local support crew, including technical director Andrew Garrett, coach Shane Kirby, rising cycling talent Jake Lay, and local farmer Carl Simmons, the team meticulously prepared for the challenge.

Starting at 4.30am, they aimed to maximise the use of the summer solstice.

The Everest endeavor began in pre-dawn darkness with cyclists Shane, Andrew, and Jake embarking on their journey.

The initial hours saw the riders settling into individual rhythms, guided by the faint glow of their bike computers and the anticipation of the impending challenge.

The ride unfolded in laps, each unveiling a deeper connection with the landscape.

“We reached speeds of up to 75-80kph coming off the hill, Jake was perhaps going quicker,” Michael remarked.

As the day progressed, it became a test not only of physical endurance but also of mental resilience.

Strategies evolved, encompassing nutrition plans and ice-soaked cooling techniques, as the

sun’s heat intensified.

“Nutrition was key. Having recently completed an Ironman, I knew the energy expenditure would be high, and I needed to find a way to refuel. Understanding why long-distance athletes can hit the wall, I needed to avoid this and consistently get carbs in,” Michael emphasised.

As the day unfolded, more riders, friends, and family joined the base camp.

Cheers, music, and occasional surprise cameos kept spirits high.

A bike change at the halfway point injected fresh energy, and with each lap, the sense of accomplishment burgeoned.

As the last lap commenced, the support crew and fellow riders gathered

for a triumphant return to base camp.

The final bell lap rang with cheers, leaving the cyclists with a blend of euphoria and disbelief.

The Everest was conquered, commemorated by a unique presentation with a local bluestone.

The day concluded with an impromptu celebration, encapsulating the essence of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In the aftermath of the Euroa Everest, Michael expressed gratitude to the support crew, the community, and the unforgettable memories created on that monumental day. Michael concluded, stating, “Taking time out of their day to support me gave me the inspiration to complete this challenge”.
