Binks to go again STRATHBOGIE Shire Council confirmed the re-election of Mayor Laura Binks and Deputy Mayor Paul Murray for another 12 months.

Votes were held between councillors during their annual statutory and extraordinary council meeting last Tuesday.

Cr Binks was reelected unanimously, with no other councillor contesting the position.

“We were thrilled to recently learn that our advocacy to produce a feasibility study for Balmattum Hill mountain

bike track was funded by the State Government.

“It is exciting to see the highly anticipated Nagambie Foreshore Walk started, which will provide greater pedestrian and cycle access between the regatta centre/ caravan park area and the township.

“Equally, seeing the splash park take shape is a great development for the local community and visitors to Nagambie.

“We saw the completion of the new Rockies Bridge crossing, which has been appreciated by users of the Apex walking track.

“We started works on our streetscape renewal across the shire with stage one completed in Avenel, Longwood and Euroa.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to roll these projects out in Nagambie, Violet Town and Strathbogie.

Apprentices and tradies set to benefit from Labor initiative

By GUS RIDDER THE State Government’s ‘Big Build’ initiative plans to create more opportunities for tradies and apprentices across Victoria through a series of new programs.

Labor says they will be delivering much-needed and practical cost of living relief to help Victoria’s apprentices make ends meet, in addition to creating a fairer and safer workplace.

Apprentices currently are used to saving up as they start out in their careers, but when you rely on your vehicle to do your job every day, the price of fuel, insurance and rego can really add up.

To combat these raising costs, a re-elected Labor Government said they will: 1. Invest $9.7 million to deliver cost of living relief and make vehicle registration fully free for eligible apprentices - worth up to $865 every year.

2. Establish an Apprenticeships Taskforce to improve safety and fairness for apprentices as they get started in their careers.

3. Establish a parliamentary inquiry to crack down on bosses and contractors who refuse to pay their sub-contractors for completed works.

Bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians, plumbers and chefs are among the Victorian apprentices expected to be eligible for fully free rego, as long as their employer can verify that the use of their vehicle is an essential part of their work.

Apprentices who need their car for work are currently entitled to a 50 per cent discount on their rego that saves them $432 per year - this change would make rego fully free, a saving of up to $865 per year.

Registration fees help to pay for road infrastructure and fund the work of the Transport Accident Commission, but can be a big hit to household budgets.

Labor has also spoken about ensuring apprentices have fair and safe workplaces as they get their start in their careers.

The taskforce will consider: 1. Regulatory arrangements, including clearer objectives and functions for the regulator.

2. Strengthening screening processes and oversight of training plans.

3. Simplifying complaint reporting and enforcement for apprentices encountering mistreatment at work.

4. Improving reporting and accountability for employers.

5. Establishing a more rig-

orous process to ensure that employers who have mistreated apprentices - including by failing to pay wages and entitlements - are prevented from employing apprentices.

The taskforce will report directly to relevant ministers and outcomes will be delivered in partnership with un-

ions and industry, including legislation if necessary.

“The support for apprentices in our region will go a long way for the young people I know,” Labor candidate for Euroa Angela Tough said.

“It will make a big difference.

“It sits well with our commitment to address the skills shortage in our region with free TAFE and cheaper train fares.

“I will support workers in these essential industries in any way I can to make sure we have the workforce to build Victoria.”

Labor also plans to crack down on bosses and contractors who refuse to pay their sub-contractors for completed works, establishing a parliamentary inquiry to determine how to fix this issue for hardworking tradies.

“We know too many tradies are experiencing wage theft or losing too much time chasing late payments for jobs,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“It’s unacceptable and Labor will do something about it.”

Suspension fault the cause for removal of VLocity services V/LINE says its new VLocity trains will stay off the North East line indefintely, while they continue to carry out tests on the trains’ suspension and are able to fix the problem.

All trainsets have been replaced by coaches since Monday last week, for the entire journey to and from Southern Cross Station while V/Line completes a number of detailed tests and investigations into the suspension related problem.

VLine said some investigations will involve a test train running along the line under controlled conditions while others involve specialist analysis of train compo-

nents and systems.

Information gained from the testing and investigations will help V/Line put measures in place if required to allow the trains to resume running on the line.

Nationals’ Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy slammed the State Government, calling them “hopelessly inept” following the removal of trains from the line.

“It is absolutely ludicrous that we should be having issues with the VLocity trains when they are practically brand new - let alone having to pull them off the rails twice this year,” he said.

“Ovens Valley residents

have had to put up with an appalling number of delays and disruption over the past decade while we were promised a fixed line and trains that ran on time.

“Instead, the line gets fixed, and the shiny new trains break down.”

Mr McCurdy said it has taken eight months for buffet cars to be installed, and now suddenly they are causing unexplained mechanical issues that are so bad they are forced to cease running.

He called on someone from V/Line or the minister for transport to come out and explain why they are having so many issues with these trains.

Haines votes against industrial relations bill

INDEPENDENT Member for Indi Helen Haines has voted against an industrial relations reform bill brought to parliament last week, despite supporting its goals.

The Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Secure Jobs, Better Pay) Bill was put through the House of Representatives on Thursday, two weeks after the legislation was introduced to parliament.

Dr Haines has expressed her support for what the bill is trying to achieve, however noted that she had concerns over the way the bill was

constructed and rushed through parliament.

“Workers in my electorate need a wage rise,” Dr Haines said.

“We are in the bottom third of electorates for wages.

“The median weekly income in Indi is $736 compared to an Australian average of $805 per week.

“We desperately need to get wages moving especially as cost of living grows.”

In a speech to the House of Representatives late on Wednesday night, Dr Haines expressed her support for increasing wages and closing the gender pay gap.

“I want wages to increase,

particularly for women; I want more people working; and I want our businesses to succeed,” she said.

But Dr Haines said the way in which the government had moved to rush through important, complex legislation without time to be properly scrutinised, and before a Senate committee inquiring into the bill had reported back, meant she couldn’t vote in favour of it.

“The job of a conscientious legislator is to do that scrutiny, to understand what questions need to be asked to safeguard for unintended consequences,” she said.

“In my mind, the speed at

which the government has progressed this bill does not do justice to the very serious intent of the problem this legislation is seeking to solve.”

Dr Haines told the parliament she was concerned about the possibility of unintended consequences for small businesses attempting to navigate the new proposed single-interest test.

The employee threshold for small business - currently defined as 15 or less employees - was a significant concern of everyone Dr Haines spoke to in the time she had to consider the bill.

It is expected the bill will be further amended in the

Senate and will come back to the House of Representatives for a final vote before the end of the year.

“I genuinely hope the Government works constructively with the Senate and that the bill may come back to this place in a form that I could support,” Dr Haines said.

“While that debate is happening, I will do all I can to engage in good faith with the people most affected by it.”

THE full list of candidates representing the Euroa district has been confirmed ahead of the 2022 Victorian State Election on November 26, with the ballot order for the seven candidates finalised on Friday.

The cut-off date for candidates associated with political parties was last Thursday, while independent candidates had until 12pm on Friday.

CANDIDATES CONFIRMED: Seven candidates will compete to represent the Euroa district in the upcoming 2022 Victorian State Election, with the ballot order locked in Friday. representatives Annabelle Cleeland (Nationals) and Brad Hearn (Liberal) being third and fourth respectively.

The Coalition is currently strong favourites to be elected in the Euroa district, with Sportsbet odds having $1.01 favourites, followed by Labor at $13, Independ-

ent ($21) and Greens ($51).

The district has been represented by retiring Nationals MP Steph Ryan since it was first contested in 2014.

When it was last contested in 2018, the Nationals recorded majorities in 38 of the 40 polling located across the district.

In the two-candidate-preferred count of that year, the Nationals and Steph Ryan were re-elected with 65.3 per cent of the vote ahead of Labor’s 34.7 per cent.

The election will be held on Saturday, November 26 with early voting options having opened on Monday.

ANTI-CORRUPTION BILL: Independent Member for Indi Helen Haines has tabled a report scrutinising the National Anti-Corruption Commission bill, supporting its passage but making six recommendations.

Anti-corruption bill needs improvements THE Joint Select Committee tasked with scrutinising the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Bill has handed down its report, supporting the passage of the bill and making six joint recommendations to the government.

Tabling the report in the House of Representatives on Thursday, deputy chair of the committee and Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines said the committee had delivered a consensus report.

“It was clear to the committee that the overwhelming majority of groups and individuals supported the establishment of a national anti-corruption commission - and there was broad agreement in relation to a number of core elements of the Bills,” Dr Haines said.

“It was important to me that the committee has a consensus report to support the passage of the bill.

“If the NACC is to withstand changes of government and the whims of the times, it needs multi-partisan support from the beginning.

“It is my sincere hope that this consensus continues beyond the committee and that all members of this Parliament vote as one to pass this bill.”

Despite the committee handing down a consensus report, Dr Haines signalled she would move amendments to the Bill when it

comes up for debate.

“This is a good bill,” she said.

“But it can be better, and that is why I intend to introduce amendments to the bill and I am hopeful the Government will consider them in the same good faith way the committee has engaged with the bill.”

Dr Haines also made additional considerations regarding the exceptional circumstances test for holding public hearings, measures to increase transparency and independence of the commission’s budget.

“The committee did not hear compelling evidence from the Government in favour of retaining the exceptional circumstances test for holding public hearings, and many experts questioned why it was necessary,” Dr Haines said.

“Together with other members of the committee I have recommended the Government consider adding measures to increase the transparency around the budget of the NACC, and measures for a special majority of the oversight committee to approve appointments of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner.

“These measures would increase the independence of the NACC and protect it against being politicised by future Governments.”

Dr Haines also recommended ‘pork barrelling’

be explicitly included in the definition of corruption.

Pork barrelling refers to using public resources or funds to target voters to try and win more votes, rather than spending these funds where they are most needed.

“If we are to ensure the NACC works to restore trust in politicians and Government, we must ensure that it covers pork barrelling,” Dr Haines said.

“Australians now expect that government money only goes where it is politically advantageous, not where it is most needed.

“My recommendations would go towards improving that trust.”

Dr Haines praised her fellow committee members for the constructive and collegiate way the committee worked together to produce the final advisory report.

“The Joint Select Committee was given an ambitious deadline by the government to examine the National Anti-Corruption Commission, but we worked across party lines in pursuit of a common goal - to make this legislation the best it could be,” she said.

“This is how the parliamentary process should work and shows the strength of what can be achieved when we cooperate in this way and I thank my fellow committee members for that.”

New tanker for Euroa CFA

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Country Fire Association (CFA) unveiled their state-of-the-art tanker last week, inviting local volunteers and community members to have a look at the much-needed truck.

The vehicle has been a long time coming for the local fire brigade, with efforts to secure the new vehicle beginning before the pandemic began.

“It dates back three or four years,” Euroa CFA first lieutenant Tyson Thompson said.

“COVID impacted the process dramatically, setting us back a couple of years.

“It’s all arrived in one piece now though and we’re really happy with it.”

CFA volunteers have already been getting trained to operate the new vehicle, with the tanker set to be ready to use for all of summer.

“We’ve been preparing already and hope to have everyone trained up in a couple of weeks,” Mr Thompson said.

“It’ll be on the road for the fire danger period.”

The tanker is set to provide a much needed benefit to the community ahead of summer and the fire danger period, with the smaller vehicle more agile at reaching parts of the region that other trucks can’t.

“It’s a 4x4 and can go anywhere in the mountains,” Mr Thompson said.

“It’s only a light tanker but the safety is amazing on it and it holds 2000 litres of water.”

Safety officer Gary Kenyon gave more insight as to why the tanker will be beneficial to the region.

“You can get into areas that the bigger trucks can’t with this one,” he said.

“As a tanker, we can fill it up with water before we go.

“It would have been very handy for the Balmattum fires recently.”

close to $220,000 paid for in full by the local community, with the majority of funds being donated as part of a kindhearted resident’s estate.

“It’s a community vehicle, all our trucks are really,” Mr Kenyon said.

“We’re excited about it and glad to have it here.”

To all the teaching staff and students, and anyone else who had anything do to with the event, congrats.

The mass was led by the Bishop of Sandhurst with the help of other priests.

The celebration of the mass with the

students singing and harmonising was wonderful to sit and listen to.

There was the return of some of the Sisters of Mercy who taught at the school many years ago.

A special mention to the students who were so helpful throughout the afternoon.

I had the pleasure of looming throughout the school.

It must be a pleasure to all the teaching staff and students to go to such a beautiful school.

DONORS gave $365,904 to support Helen Haines’ successful bid for the seat of Indi at the 2022 federal election in May. According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) transparency register, Dr Haines’ campaign received cash donations from 1412 individual donors, and did not receive any discretionary benefits.

Political funding group Climate 200 donated $25,000 to Dr Haines’ campaign, but all other donations were below the $14,500 disclosure threshold.

Federal election candidate, political party and donor election disclosure forms were published by the AEC on November 7.

“Candidates for major political parties also don’t have to declare the donations they receive, with donations all rolled into the one party disclosure.

“We only get half the picture.

“Under our current laws major political party candidates’ electoral disclosures show ‘nil’ received and ‘nil’ expenditure on a seat by seat basis.

“Australians across the political spectrum want to see reform in this area and I look forward to continuing my work in this space during this term of Parliament.”

According to Dr Haines’ website, all donations totaling above $1000 from an individual donor are published on the website each quarter, and donations above $14,500 are disclosed within five days.

UP to one million Victorian kids are set to benefit under the Nationals’ ‘Keeping Kids Moving’ program, which will offer $200 vouchers for school enrolled children to participate in sport, dance, Scouts or other active recreation, if the Coaliton is elected.

The Keeping Kids Moving program will provide school children with a voucher valued up to $200 each year for the next two years, to be used to join a sporting club, take lessons, for seasonal registration fees, or be part of other active recreation groups by approved providers.

The Nationals say active children are happier and healthier, and that young people will benefit physically, mentally, and socially from participation in sport and being part of a team.

Children missed out on crucial community sporting activities due to COVID-19 restrictions, while sporting clubs struggled with declining membership numbers.

The program will reward hardworking Victorians families by giving them the financial relief they deserve and by easing hippocket pressures.

A capped number of vouchers (up to 500,000 per year for two years) will be available each year accessible to families across Victoria.

“We want to remove financial barriers and provide great facilities so all children can be involved, active and develop their skills.”

This policy is capped at $200 million over two years.

Mr Munt followed his speech with the Ode to the Fallen, before attendees listened to a rendition of the Last Post and observed a minute’s silence.

Wreaths were laid by local groups, including the RSL, the Third Age Club, the Strathbogie Shire Council, and Euroa Legacy war widows.

The day’s guest speaker was a member of the Euroa RSL chapter who served in the Royal Australian Air Force, Reverend Norman Hart.

Reverend Hart spoke about the ongoing conflicts in the world and the realities of war in his speech to the crowd.

“Four bloody awful years in which millions of people died,” he said.

“Families destroyed, towns obliterated, even empires fell.

“A whole generation of

men, grieving grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, widows and fiancées all impacted.

“Everyone hoped this war would be the war to end all wars.

“But since then, there has not been a single day where there wasn’t war in some part of this world.

“Despite the war to end all wars ending 104 years ago, every day since then there has been war happening.

“One of the things that distresses me at the moment is the war in Ukraine.

“It’s really highlighted the fact that war inevitably relies on lies, told and believed.”

Reverend Hart finished his speech by leading the audience in prayer.

Local students from Euroa Secondary College were then invited to read poems, with Angus Murray reciting “In Flanders Fields”, and Lily Skinner reading “We Shall Keep the Faith”.

Similar services were held across the Strathbogie Shire, with the region’s proud military history on display.

THE Euroa community held its annual Remembrance Day service at the RSL Memorial Park on Kirkland Avenue on Friday.

Several locals were in attendance to pay their respects, along with visiting members of the Geelong MG Car Club who had stopped in town for the service.

Proceedings began shortly before 11am, with Euroa RSL president Phil Munt making an address to those who made the service.

“We are assembled here this morning to remember and honour all those who have given their lives defending their country from those who would take away the peace and freedom that we enjoy today,” he said.

“It is a day where we can all physically show our gratitude to those who made the supreme sacrifice.

“We must also never forget those who were wounded and maimed, both mentally and physically, and had to carry on with life without a lot of government support for many years.”

Creative community on display

By GUS RIDDER A COLLECTION of intricately designed hats made by local creative Melanie Ball are currently being displayed at the Pop-Up Arts shop in Euroa, much to the delight of the local community.

The hats are all unique, with each one bearing a different pattern and style and none of them lacking in flair.

Locals around town have been spotted wearing the hats, with the creative designs being an instant conversation starter.

Ms Ball, a major part of the Pop-Up Arts initiative, has been making the hats for the last five years but her creative journey has been much longer.

“I started by decorating jackets for myself almost 25 years ago,” she said.

“I was living in Melbourne and everyone always wore boring black clothes, and I’m not a boring person.

“I started doing more for my family, selling them and giving them away.”

The decorative process for the hats is always unique, with each hat varying in how they are made.

“Every hat is rescued from op shops or markets,” Ms Ball said.

“I’ll clean them up and get them prepared for

decorating.

“I almost exclusively use wool felt, because it’s the best way to get the adherence on the fabrics I use.

“I use mostly fabric and glue paint, and then sometimes I’ll add feathers, jewels and other extras.”

Ms Ball gets her inspiration from a variety of sources and also takes commissions from members of the community.

“I love nature, I do a lot of bird hats,” she said.

“Sometimes things just come into my mind, recently I thought I should try a lighthouse on a cliff with the sea around it.

“Others just feel like a natural fit based on the shape of the hat itself.

“I’ve done hats for bakers and designed them to fit the theme.

“A goat cheese maker wanted a goat themed hat.

Keeping every hat unique is part of the fun for Ms Ball, although she does have some favourites.

“One is inspired by a painting in the Benalla Art Gallery, I’m really proud of that one,” she said.

“The biggest issue I have is when I sell one; I think I should do another one of the same type.

“But I’ve got other ideas that I can do, so I like to keep them different.”

Photography exhibit at the Euroa Library sure to turn heads

By GUS RIDDER THE photography of local artist Suzie Bates is currently being displayed in the meeting room of the Euroa Library, part of a blossoming tradition that showcases the shire’s talented creatives.

The exhibition includes a collection of photos that range from local nature to historical Europe.

Ms Bates, born in England but based in Strathbogie, teaches art at Euroa Secondary College and has an extensive history with a variety of artistic mediums.

“I studied sculpture and have done a lot of photography on the side,” she said.

“I don’t consider myself a photographer, more of a documenter.

“I was always creative and have loved experimenting with materials.

“Since I was a teenager it has been more about the materials rather than the subject matter.”

When asked about the inspiration for creating these photographs, Ms Bates spoke about her travels across the world and her appreciation for the local nature in the region.

“The inspiration for this body of work is a culmination of exploring different parts of the world and getting out to the bush,” she said.

“All photos are either in Taungurung country or from Southern France.

“There was a lot of going through photographs to see what resonated.

“Being born in England, I was looking to find ways to connect and find a sense of belonging in Australia while still remembering Europe.”

Ms Bates has been exhibiting more of her work in local galleries, with the library offering a snapshot of the pieces that she has created.

“This show is part of a larger body of work that has been on display at the Bush

Gatherings Gallery in Violet Town which included sculptures and other photo installations,” she said.

“It was a great space to put together a cohesive show; it was more like an installation.”

Ms Bates thanked the library for giving her the opportunity to display her work and grow the local arts scene in Euroa.

“I’ve seen the rotating exhibitions in the library recently, and had been contacted about displaying some student art in the future,” she said.

“I didn’t realise how nice it would be to see the photos hanging up in here like this.

“There’s a lot of creative people in the region and it’s been great to share that in the community.”

The Artspace at the library is a Friends of the Euroa Library initiative, providing a space for talented local artists to showcase their creations.

Longwood exhibition praised

By GUS RIDDER THE Longwood Community Centre has been hosting the Shrine of Remembrance’s touring exhibition, ‘Changed Forever’, from October 28 and will continue until November 27.

The exhibition, ‘Changed Forever: Legacies of Conflict’, interweaves stories of migrants from war-torn countries and recent veterans of overseas service, reflecting the range and depth of experiences of conflict.

The exhibition is based on a collection of oral histories undertaken by the Shrine with Australian Defence Force veterans of recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations, and migrants to Australia who have come here because of conflict.

It explores the impacts of global and civil conflict in changing lives and shaping contemporary Australia.

The stories are enhanced

with art, objects, photographs, audio-visuals and interactives.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks spoke about the exhibition and the value it has brought to the community.

“Congratulations to those involved in bringing the fantastic exhibition to Longwood - it is an important insight into the experiences of veterans of recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Cr Binks said.

“Our Shire has a proud history of military service and we do an amazing job of recognising this history through a number of dedicated monuments throughout our communities.

“This exhibition is an added avenue for locals and visitors alike to take in paintings, sculpture, music, multimedia, poetry and photographs showcasing personal stories of service men and women.

The event was sponsored by council through a $2000 con-

tribution made through their events sponsorship program.

“Applications for this program are encouraged for events that promote community engagement and participation; support gender equality and social inclusion and improve accessibility; contribute to building healthy and vibrant communities and increase economic development, tourism and the visitor economy,” Cr Binks said.

MARKET RETURNS: The Euroa Farmers Market is expected to return on November 19, with plenty of stalls set up on Kirkland Avenue.

Farmers market set to return WHAT a disruptive couple of months we have had.

Let’s hope things can get back to normal and the Euroa Village Farmers Market can be held, as normal, on the third Saturday of the month (November 19).

There is not expected to be stalls set up in Rotary Park but there will still be some on Kirkland Avenue, and what a beautiful Avenue it is.

Wide, lots of trees and a Park, RSL, Third Aged Club, Community Hall, kids playground, skate park and then the wonderful museum all in one block.

The market will start at

9am and runs until 1pm.

There will be lots of stalls selling fruit and veggies, jams and preserves, flowers and honey, takeaway food and coffee, plants, plants and more plants.

Look out for sculptures to put in your garden.

There will be eggs, chocolate, olive oil and greeting cards, calendars for next year and lots of soaps and gifts to start your Christmas shopping.

Talking about calendars and plants, the Euroa Historical Society will be selling their popular calendars and maybe a raffle.

will be selling a couple of home-grown plants too.

The St Paul’s Anglican Church congregation will be cooking the sausages and burgers.

Local musicians “Blended’ will entertain with classic rock and pop songs.

Take a seat with your coffee or ice cream and enjoy the music.

The Rotary Club Community Swap Stall will not be operating this month so pass your excess veggies to your neighbour.

Design, print, wear, inspire INSPIRED by the beauty and diversity of the flora and fauna of Strathbogie, a group of year 10 and VCAL students at Euroa Secondary College were busy creating wearable art.

Organised by president of the Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network (SRCMN) Helen McKernan and Euroa Secondary College art teacher Suzie Bates, the students had the opportunity to create unique art that is visually appealing and fun to wear.

from Shepparton were the visiting artists and screen print makers, helping to supervise the students during the event.

Robyn and Kerri are also involved with Kooriez in da Hood, a community art project for young First Nations people.

Ms McKernan was full of enthusiasm and thrilled to be working with Euroa Secondary College.

“We are always scouting for opportunities to work with young people”, she said.

“Days like these are educational and fun for stu-

dents and teachers.”

The project was funded by SRCMN with funds from a Landcare grant.

Ms Bates was delighted with the project too.

“Not only do the kids have a chance to be involved in this great project, but the college has been given the funds to recondition the print making screens for future use by the students,” she said.

An exhibition of the screen printed t-shirts is being arranged, and hopefully will be modelled by the students who created them.

A successful Halloween night in the town and at the Ellen Frances.

It was great to seek kids (of a wide variety of ages) and parents walking the streets of the town.

It was obvious that some saw parts of town never visited.

Lucky that this month’s market ran between two storm fronts and was a lovely sunny day.

New item found at the market this month was black garlic - a hit with locals from the quantity sold.

Cause starts worthy conversations

By GUS RIDDER TYLER Brodie, the grandson of well-known Euroa locals John and Lyn Sargood and Tom and Shirley Brodie, has become celebrated for his work raising funds for Movember over the years.

Movember is a monthlong annual fundraiser that involves growing a moustache and raising money for different health causes specifically impacting men including suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Born in Benalla and now living in Shepparton, Mr Brodie (known by many as “T-BRO”) has been participating in the men’s health charity initiative since 2015 after losing his best friend to suicide.

The efforts of “T-BRO’s Movember” have been praised in the communities of Benalla and Shepparton in the years since he began fundraising, with sausage sizzles and merchandise playing a huge role in raising critical funds for the charity.

After getting the attention of Benalla and Shepparton, Mr Brodie now wants to make the region where his extended family is from involved.

“My family is born and raised in Euroa and I would

love to get the community involved in the fundraising,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to my grandparents and it’d be great to have them and their friends aware of the work we are doing.”

Mr Brodie’s motivation to begin fundraising and spreading awareness developed after losing a dear friend.

“In 2013, I had a best mate that was like a brother commit suicide,” he said.

“That really struck me and after talking with people and doing some research, I found out about Movember.

“I’ve been focusing on the mental health aspect of Movember and raising funds for that cause.”

Mr Brodie has now raised $8000 from different initiatives over the years and hopes to continue growing that to support mental health charities.

“We started with a sausage sizzle in 2015 outside a local woollies,” he said.

“Since then there has been a lot of growth and we’ve found other ways to spread awareness and raise money.

“After COVID hit, it was a lot harder to hold the sausage sizzle but I was determined to keep involved.

“I decided to do a raffle instead, with local businesses

helping out and donating prizes.

“I’ve been getting merchandise organised too, getting stubby holders, t-shirts and hats.”

Movember means a lot more than just raising money to Mr Brodie, with him finding his merchandise has already begun starting important conversations with strangers about mental health.

“I wear my t-shirt or hat in the shop I work in a lot,” he said.

“The moustache is certainly a conversation starter too.

“A lot of people come up and approach me to ask questions and we usually just have a chat.

“After COVID, being in isolation and now the floods, it feels especially important to have those conversations and check how people are doing.

“I’m glad that it’s been able to spread some awareness and hopefully help a few people out.”

After raising $2500 last year, T-BRO’s Movember campaign has raised $625 so far this month with hopes for more.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Ag show funding “scrapped” says Birrell NATIONALS Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell has released a statement saying Labor has confirmed it is scrapping funding for the Agriculture Shows Development Grants Program.

In estimates week, Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said $14 million in funding for Ag shows was being “reprioritised”.

Mr Birrell said estimates had sadly proved Labor was taking even more money out of regional and rural Australia, with infrastructure funding for Ag shows now gone, including in the electorate of Nicholls.

“We already know Labor has taken billions away from the regions, scrapping water and major infrastructure commitments,” Mr Birrell said.

“But now they are cruelly taking away the Agricultural Shows Development Grants Program funding.

“This was money to improve infrastructure for Ag shows in Nicholls.

“It is another kick in the guts to our flood affected region which is already struggling.”

The funding was on top of $20

million previously provided for 122 shows to build new pavilions and exhibition areas, install seating, shade and weather protection, upgrade accessibility, improve public safety and animal welfare and upgrade power and energy efficiency.

“Ag shows generate a huge $1 billion annually in economic benefits, promoting new technologies and high-quality produce,” Mr Birrell said.

“For some communities and charities, agriculture shows are the financial boost they need to get them through the year and our flood affected communities will need this more than ever to help recover and reboot local economies.”

Mr Birrell said shows are also the driver for innovation and education, showcasing Australia’s food and fibre and supporting tourism.

“Labor says the funding will be redirected for other government priorities,” he said.

“Labor needs to explain why it doesn’t prioritise regional and rural Australia.

“It has abandoned our regional communities and taken muchneeded infrastructure away.”

Delivering innovation to Victoria’s farmers VICTORIA will be leading the country in agricultural innovation according to the Liberals and Nationals, with the Coalition committing $8 million to establish the Agriculture Futures Extension Program (AFEP).

The program will be available to grower groups across Victoria to deliver programs that assist farmers in adopting new technologies and practices.

The programs will boost profitability, productivity, and environmental sustainability for Victorian primary producers.

The funding will allow industry groups to tailor programs for participants, with the focus of AFEP’s delivery

including: • Awareness of agriculture’s impact on the environment and carbon emissions; • Adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and practices; • Supporting emerging farmers (such as young people and women), and; • Diversifying domestic and export markets.

Shadow Minister for Agriculture Peter Walsh said the fund would deliver innovative programs to drive greater productivity.

“Victoria’s $17.8 billion agricultural industry relies on innovation to constantly adapt to a changing environment,” Mr Walsh said.

“This funding will allow

industry groups to deliver programs that encourage on-farm innovation and adoption of new technology.

“Our farmers are the stewards of the land, and the Agriculture Futures Extension Program will assist them in meeting their business and net zero ambitions.”

It is estimated the program will be able to deliver 40 separate programs through to 2027.

The announcement follows the Liberals and Nationals’ commitment to establishing a new regional Victorian collaborative soil research centre and programs such as Birchip Cropping Group’s Nexus program.

Locals hike to capture lunar eclipse

By GUS RIDDER A TOTAL Lunar Eclipse was visible from Australia last week, with a group of local photographers hiking to the top of Mount Wombat to get the perfect shot.

Charles Street and fellow members of the Euroa Photographers made the trip up the mountain last Wednesday and were amazed at what they saw.

“At first, the eclipse was hidden behind dense clouds in the eastern sky,” Mr Street said.

“Soon the clouds dissipated, allowing us to take pictures of most of this spectacular event.”

The photographs taken from the event include a montage of the moon over November 8 and 9.

Eclipses of the Moon occur when the Moon moves into the shadow of the Earth.

When the Moon is fully immersed in the dark part of the shadow, a total eclipse of the Moon is visible.

During this phenomenon, the eclipsed Moon usually takes on a dark reddish colour from the light being bent or refracted onto the Moon by the Earth’s atmosphere.

On average, there is an eclipse of the Moon every eight months, with a little under half of these being considered total.

The number of lunar eclipses in a year can range from zero to a maximum of three.

A total eclipse of the Moon is visible from Australia on average every 2.8 years.

The next total lunar eclipses visible from Australia will occur in March and September 2025.

Nationals commit to upgrade local netball court The Nationals have pledged $55,000 to upgrade Violet Town Football Netball Club’s netball courts if elected to government later this month.

The funding would allow the club to reconstruct their current courts to modern standards.

The courts were built decades ago and have reportedly deteriorated to the point of being unsafe for players, particularly during inclement weather.

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland outlined the benefits of the upgrades.

“Locals have indicated that these investments are vital and I’m committed to delivering them,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The courts here are cracked, outdated and dangerous, particularly when the heavens open throughout the netty season.

“Netballers from across the region will be incredibly excited about pencilling in a trip to Violet Town through the season with a sensational new surface.

“The Nationals Regional In-

frastructure Guarantee ensures there’s money in the budget for these really simple but welcome local upgrades.”

Ms Cleeland said sporting clubs across the region would benefit from a range of investments if The Nationals return to government.

“This announcement sits alongside many great local sporting projects already set to be funded by The Nationals in government,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We’ve committed to multi-million dollar upgrades at Seymour FNC and MurchisonToolamba FNC, as well as $10 million for a new Benalla stadium and upgrades to Longwood Recreation Reserve.

Risk of spill updated for regional water systems THE resource manager for Northern Victoria today released updated 2022/23 risk of spill information for each of the Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe water systems.

Resource manager Dr Mark Bailey said ongoing wet conditions through October caused deductions from spillable water accounts in the Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe systems.

“Flows into Lake Eildon and Lake Eppalock during October were the highest on record and both storages spilled significant volumes,” Dr Bailey said.

“Releases from Lake Hume to manage water levels continued throughout October and into November.

“The Eildon and Hume releases will cause deductions from Goulburn and Murray spillable water accounts respectively.

“The quantities of spill will be confirmed in the November 15 seasonal determination announcement.

“There are no volumes to deduct from spillable accounts in the Campaspe system because all entitlements received the maximum available seasonal determination on October 17.”

SPILL RISK UPDATE: The Northern Victorian resource manager has announced updates to the spill risk of water systems in the region.

FRONTLINE WORKER FUNDING: Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson says funding has been pulled from first responder and frontline worker programs such as Fortem, that was funded after historic bushfires.

Indi’s frontline workers wronged says Senator LIBERAL Senator Sarah Henderson has criticised the Federal Labor Government, saying they are “ripping funding” from programs that support frontline workers in Indi.

The previous Coalition Government provided $10 million over two years to charity organisation, Fortem Australia, for essential mental health and wellbeing support for those assisting during natural disasters.

According to Ms Henderson, in Labor’s first budget, $8 million in

funding was withdrawn from the organisation which means they have been unable to open services and outreach programs in Albury Wodonga and the Indi region.

Senator Henderson has been calling on Labor to reverse this funding cut.

“The Coalition supports our first responders, who perform a vital role in the community, supporting vulnerable people in urgent need, such as during bushfires or floods,” she said.

“First responders work in

highly challenging and often dire conditions, they are regularly exposed to traumatic experiences, face long hours under constant pressure and are required to make critical decisions with a moment’s notice.

“PTSD is one of the most prevalent injuries suffered by first responders working in challenging and dangerous situations - ensuring they’re funded for wellbeing programs will help communities during disasters.”

The Coalition Government

originally funded Fortem with $10 million to support the mental health and wellbeing of natural disaster responders following their successful delivery of a similar program by competitive tender after the Black Summer Bushfires.

NBN team heading to Strathbogie NBN Local’s Northeast Victoria Community Engagement Team is heading to towns throughout Strathbogie Shire to help businesses and community understand and uplift their digital capability.

While the digital divide is slowly improving in Australia, some groups are still more at risk of digital exclusion and face increased barriers in a digitised society.

More than 85 per cent of jobs require digital skills, and even more require a certain level of digital capability to apply for a job.

Access, ability and affordability are the key themes that create the digital divide.

Being digitally capable allows people to manage their health, access education, the job market and join cultural activities.

For businesses, technology has evolved dramatically - so secure, fast and reliable internet connection is more important now than ever before.

Eligible businesses in Nagambie, Euroa and Violet Town can now access nbn’s fastest business grade broadband.

Head of nbn Local Victoria Emily Peel spoke about the options available to the community.

“Some people may not be aware of what nbn options might be available to them to connect to fast and reliable broadband through a retail service provider,” she said.

The nbn local team have organised several events and information sessions to help community members and

Flood waters tested THE Victorian branch of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has published more results from its regional flood water testing program in conjunction with VICSES and Natural Hazards Research Australia.

Indicative results from the second round of regional floodwater tests show low E. coli levels at all the testing locations - Little Murray River at Swan Hill, Murray River at Swan Hill, Campaspe River upstream of Rochester, Campaspe River at Rochester, Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe Rivers at Echuca.

“These results build on the testing we have already done in other regional locations as well as the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne,” EPA chief environmental scientist, Professor Mark Taylor said.

“Those results also showed generally low levels of E. coli with only the Goulburn River at Shepparton (2,000 MPN/100ml) showing above the recreational water quality guideline limit of 550 Most Probable Number per 100 ml (MPN/100ml) when we tested there on 2 November.

“Our advice remains to avoid contact with flood water wherever possible.

“E. coli indicates that faecal contamination is present.

SAMPLES TAKEN FROM FLOODWATER: The EPA, VICSES and Natural Hazards Research Australia have been testing flood waters across the state for contaminants, advising to avoid floodwaters wherever possible.

“Just because E. coli levels are low does not mean that there is no risk to health.

“We’re being cautious because the situation is highly variable.

“Floodwater should be treated as contaminated water as it can be contaminated from naturally occurring sources as well as overflowing sewerage or septic tanks, or agricultural or industrial wastes and chemicals.

“With an increased amount of floodwater in our catchments, this testing will provide a greater understanding of water qual-

ity across the state.”

To protect your health, always assume that all floodwater is contaminated.

Avoid contact with polluted water and sediment if possible, and visit the EPA website for more information on how you can stay safe.

Under the joint agency program, SES will collect samples at multiple flood locations over coming weeks that will be analysed by EPA. Andrew Gissing, chief executive officer of Natural Hazards Research Australia, said the

initial results show that you can never be certain what is in floodwater.

“We know from our research that floods are often associated with increased risk taking from individuals, with water often associated with fun,” he said.

“There is nothing fun about contaminated floodwater.

“Cuts and scratches can easily get infected so the safest option is to stay out of floodwater for your own health.”

The partnership with Natural Hazards Research Australia will ensure the results are shared nationally with emergency services to help them educate communities and emergency services personnel about the many dangers floodwaters pose.

“In the last month, we have seen prolonged periods of heavy rain, flooding and storms, and we will continue to see this over the next few days,” VICSES chief officer Tim Wiebusch said.

“It’s vital communities understand the many different risks associated with floodwater.

“As well as the immediate physical dangers, floodwater can also carry pollution into waterways.”

VT residents pleased with swift response to remove weeds

By GUS RIDDER THE local community and visitors of Violet Town are relieved now that the overgrown weeds in the main street have been trimmed.

The weed growth attracted the attention of the Euroa Gazette who published an article last week about the concerns of local residents and businesses.

One of the residents interviewed last week, Violet Town Cafe co-owner Gary Abley spoke about the removal of the weeds.

“It was great to see the Strathbogie Shire respond so quickly to the Euroa Gazette article last week,” he said.

“So many locals had been trying to get the weeds removed, so a huge thanks to the Euroa Gazette for supporting us Violet Townians.

“I look forward to the project being finalized, but it’s a good start.

“We feel we pay a lot of rates and deserve ongoing maintenance around the Town.

“Maybe a couple of permanent Shire staff could be located here like in the past.”

Memorial Gardens for their layout of native grasses and bushes along with pathways where people can walk between different themes such as Courage, Care and Resilience.

“It was nice that the Violet

Town main street didn’t have huge weeds growing in it while they were visiting.”

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB IN round four of GVPA weekend pennant both Avenel teams found the going tough recording big losses.

Division seven played Rushworth away and were unable to master the synthetic green losing 0 - 25 to Rushworth 14 - 57.

While division 3 played Seymour at home and were subject to a bowls master class from the visitors 18 129 to 0 - 80.

The division seven rink of Ross Sinclair, Marion Gittus, Roy Cooper, Graham Lewis (s) were ten shots down winning only three ends before smoko.

Winning six of the last eight ends brought them within one shot of their opponents with the last end to be played.

However, Rushworth prevailed to win the last end by one shot and winning the game 18 - 20.

The other division 7 rink of Kyle Pedder, Rusty Schwab, Norm Billingsley, Graeme Toy (s) were never in the hunt winning only six ends and playing the second half of the game with three bowlers after third Norm Billingsley took ill early in the game and retired ill at smoko.

The final score of 37 - 7 was a percentage boosting win for the home team.

Next week division seven play Seymour at home.

In the division three game, Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy, Spud Furletti, Noel Slater (s) were 12 shots down at smoko.

Even though they won the second half by two shots they were unable to haul in the deficit.

Seymour won the game 30 - 20.

Donna Rowley, Dennis McGregor, Howard Geldard, Jake Wall (s) also lost by ten shots.

Avenel had the lead for seven ends mid-game before Seymour scored 17 shots in four ends after the break.

There was a glimmer of hope by end 21 with Avenel only four shots down.

But Seymour won the last four ends to claim the win 34 - 24.

Despite winning one more end than Seymour, James Wall, Kate Donovan, Josh McDonald, Brett McDonald (s) lost their game 15 - 27.

Seymour simply bowled more consistently and had multiple scoring shots at the head on their winning ends.

Ruth King, Pam Pedder, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) lead for most of the first half until the last end before the break when Seymour scored a four to take a three shot lead.

After smoko, Seymour powered ahead scoring 22 shots in 11 ends for a convincing win 38 - 21.

The next game for division three is away against Shepparton Park.

GOLF NAGAMBIE MEN THE McPherson Wines four ball best ball was a big hit once again with generous and plentiful prizes on the day well received.

The Nagambie golf club would like to thank Shaun Bryant of McPherson Wines for their ongoing sponsorship over many years.

The stableford format was played with the thick rough

causing many headaches for the local golfers, but it was the father and son partnership of Jeremy and Ryan Ezard narrowly winning the sponsor’s fine drop by one point ahead of a tightly bunched chasing pack.

A 41 point total got the job done for Ezard and Ezard, beating home the highly motivated Lindsay Hall and Shaun Spicer keen to get their hands on the sponsors wares by one point.

Two other pairings managed to finish on 40 points, Chris Roberts with Terry Lowis and Rhys Shepherd with John Hurley third and fourth placed.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Jeremy Ezard on the new par three island green eigth, Terry Lowis capping off a good day with a crackerjack on the 13th and Graeme Galvin smashing his way to the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be the Captain v President stableford challenge with D. Love and J. Lodding on office duty and G. Whiteman in the bar.

There was only one grade and the winner was Moz Fowler with 31pts.

Winner of the nine hole competition was also Moz with 16 pts on a C/B from Sue Verge.

18 hole balls down the line went to Moz 31 pts and Sue 27 pts on a C/B from Annette Mills Nine hole balls down the line went to Moz and Sue both with 16 pts.

There was only one N/P winner and that was on the 16th with the winner being Moz. Chicken Run Results, Thursday, November 10 17 players played a round of Stableford on the back nine.

EUROA GOLF CLUB An enormous amount of work by the greens keeper and his small, but super energetic team of volunteer helpers went into the course to get it as close to ready as possible for the first round of the Club Championships.

12 millimeters of rain on Friday evening didn’t help, but the course was as good as it could be in the circumstances.

A field of 44 men took on the heavy conditions and the mosquitos, with some pretty impressive scores in the conditions.

Glen McMartin took out the November Monthly medal with 72 net 69 and Phil Squires won division two.

In the Championships, the reigning Champion Ed Carracher’s 71 puts him in the lead from G McMartin 72, Paul Robinson 73, Mills 76, Plugger Corradin 78, Cam Roper and Paddy McCarthy on 79.

Phil Squires has an 8 shot lead in division two.

It would be fair to say that the higher handicap players in division two found the conditions more trying with ten players handing in cards above 100.

Even one division one player had a Bradman.

The greens were rolling beautifully and the soft conditions rewarded good wedge shots, but really punished poor shots.

One golfer handed in a card with a 2 and a 12 and most of the numbers in between.

Nearest the Pins went to Ed Carracher twice, Mick Anderson and Lochie Robinson.

Drive and Pitch winners were Scott Watson twice , Richard Johnson and Matt Mills.

Balls down the Line were Ed Carracher 71, Scott Watson 72, Lucas Paul 73, Peter Bath 73, Scott Watson 74, Marcus Steers and Paddy McCarthy 74.

Scott Watson topped off a good day picking up $80 for his 2 ball, David Baker should have shared the payment.

The Ladies Championships begin next Saturday and carry over champ Melissa Eddy will be taking good form into the event after she won the Ladies Competition with 34 points from Gail Allen 32, Freda Edwards and Annette Smith both had 27.

Robyn Lied took out division two in a field of 14.

The club is showing signs of resuscitation back to life with a big crowd in the clubhouse after the event.

Some warmer and drier weather and a couple more mows will have the course in excellent condition going into summer.

15 men and 11 ladies played in the Wednesday competition.

Deb Cox was the ladies winner from Gay Mitchell.

Marg McCalpin won the nine hole event, fair to say the ladies are looking for better conditions and so are some of the men.

Pete Bath had a good win on 37 points, a great score considering two thirds of the field couldn’t accumulate more than 30 points.

Next Saturday sees the second round of the Men’s Championships and the first round for the Ladies.

Both events are sponsored

by BD North East Electrics. $400 is on offer for a hole in one during the Championships.

The annual John Dewan Seniors event was played on November 14.

December 4 sees the Euroa Shield four ball event sponsored by Tehan George & Co and the Eliza Forlonge on December 5 at Euroa and the following day at Strathbogie.

Twilight on Friday evening and Giggle Golf is open for beginner ladies on Sundays during November.

Junior teams kick off season Cricket Shepparton U16 A Grade Euroa v NotreDame/St Brendans at Deakin Reserve, Shepparton 2 day game - Day 1 With the season delayed by a few weeks due to the recent floods, Euroa excitedly arrived at Deakin Reserve on Friday night to take on NotreDame/St Brendan’s.

As a number of the experienced players from last season’s premiership are no longer available and with Mitch Walters injured, it was a very youthful team that took to the field to kick off the season in what was the grand final replay.

Walter Jackson, captaining for the day, lost the toss and had to gather the team for an evening in the field.

Humid weather and the realization that there were 45 overs to be bowled had Euroa focused for a good start to the match.

Indeed, the boys started well, restricting NotreDame/St Brendan’s to 17 off the first 7 overs and removing the two well credentialed openers with some clinical bowling.

Kasuma Wolfenden (4/30) was doing the damage early, with his swing bowling proving too hard for the opposition to handle.

At the other end he was ably supported by Max Miller (0/4 off 7 overs) who bowled very consistently and with good pace and bounce.

Walter Jackson persevered after some early innings struggles, finishing

with 2 for 46 and taking 3 catches.

The combination of early season nerves, a tiring bowling unit and a couple of attacking batters who were sweating on every ball, saw Euroa lose control of proceedings in the middle overs.

To their credit, the boys stuck to the task, keeping their heads up and encouraging each other.

As a result, they were able to wrestle back the momentum and worked together to restrict NotreDame/St Brendan’s to 5 for 50 off the last 20 overs.

Leo Murphy (1/39) kept looping up his leg spinners and was rewarded with a wicket, whilst the Wilson brothers, Archie (1/17) and Ollie (1/19), were bowling some very tight lines.

Sharp catches from Walter Jackson, Ethan Saxon and Declan Antonis were a highlight, whilst Jack Walters doing the team-oriented acts in the field and Cale Robertson’s sharp work behind the stumps didn’t go unnoticed.

Euroa’s challenge was to keep the opposition under 200 and that’s exactly what they did, closing the innings at 9/197 off the allocated 45 overs.

Next Friday night the boys will be looking to chip away at the score, occupy the crease and hopefully come away with an early season victory.

The Mooroopna bowling attack was strong and didn’t give much opportunity to score, Captain Swain pushing for runs was caught at cover, Euroa under pressure at 1/9.

Co-captain Ethan Saxon steadied the ship scoring easily before he was bowled for a solid 19 off 41.

Ollie Wilson still at the crease teamed with Jack Walters for a 50 run partnership.

Ollie Wilson showing great maturity continued to accumulate runs before finally retiring at 40 off 73.

Will Davey was next in and pushed along scoring a quick fire 22 off 24 .

Haimi Wolfenden and Jack Walters continued pushing for more runs before Haimi was caught for 3.

Sam Mills joined Jack at the crease for his 1st U14 game and looked right at home.

Mooroopna’s bowling attack was strong B Woods 2/8, C Sleeth 3/19 and A Smith 1/7 and didn’t give many opportunities especially after the last drinks break when Euroa was positioned to score heavily.

Coach Owen Robertson said at the end of game “ if we can bat for 45 overs each week we’ll have a good year”.

Credit to the ground staff for producing an excellent deck in very challenging weather.

Euroa Lawn Tennis reaches round five AFTER last week’s debacle with injury which helped Moglonemby to a win, the Mogs needed a good win to get them back on track.

They played Terip at home and got off to a cracking start winning the first 4 sets.

Grant Davey and Sue Vaughan were in good touch.

With first year player Dan Godsmark getting the trifecta being the only player to win all 3 sets.

Go Dan. Moglonemby went on to win by 23 games.

Gooram played Benalla Lawn at home and whilst the first ladies had a bad start, the men with Josh Higgins and Mark Borthwick evened it out with an 8-1.

Chris Ellis and Kim McCabe fought back well 8-3 as did Mark and Jack Vecht.

Then it all went a bit south with Benalla winning all but one of the next 4 sets to go on to a five game win.

Longwood Lawn played St Pauls in

what was a very tight afternoon.

Leanne Armstrong had a great day winning all 3 of her sets.

It was great to see Dav Mackrell filling in and Rod Andrews making a long-awaited comeback from injury.

St Paul’s only had to get 2 games in the last mixed, but Rod and Leanne stepped up for Longwood and won the final set 8-1 and Longwood grabbed the win by 1 game.

Euroa Lawn travelled to Benalla Gardens and started well on the concrete with Row Ellis and Mel Creevey winning 8-4.

The Benalla Gold men were too strong on the day but Mel and Gayle Furphy fought back with a nice 8-4.

Unfortunately, that’s where it ended for Euroa with Benalla coasting to a 19-game win.

In Division B, Craig Durkins team also played at Gardens.

Craig and Grant Chaston won a great tie breaker with Craig following it up with Harrison Mills 8-6.

STRONG FINISHER: Emma Kirkbride sends back a speedy return.

The Euroa’s women were outplayed

by Benalla, but Grant and Harrison had a fabulous set winning 8-7.

Craig took out the MVP again winning his mixed with Kalarni Anderson 8-4.

Down by only 1 set and 23 games was a big improvement from last year.

St Paul’s 2 took on Goorambat at home and after last weeks big loss to Swanpool were looking for a confidence booster.

Olivia Gall and Ella Hill first up had an 8-3 win with Jim Gall and Jason Goss winning likewise.

Olivia and Caroline Keenan had outstanding afternoons winning all 3 sets and up 19 games.

In fact, all players including David Vaughan were great.

St Paul’s won 8 of 9 sets and amassed a 43-game victory which is bound to put them back into contention.

Next week will see 4 matches at home with two cracking games St Paul’s 1 v Moglonemby and Longwood v Gooram.

THE Murray Bushrangers have announced their preseason squad for the under 18 boys.

5 Euroa players have been selected in the 101 player squad as they look to begin their journey towards an AFL list.

The Bushrangers’ preseason begins Sunday, November 20 with wholesquad sessions held at Norm Minns Oval every Sunday, while satellite groups in Albury and Shepparton train on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Murray Bushrangers talent manager Mick Wilson said it was a difficult job picking the squad “It was a hard process picking the squad because we had the floods while we were doing our testing and trials,” Wilson said.

“Off the back of the pandemic we haven’t seen much of this age group play so we’ve casted a net far and wide to get a squad together.

“We normally wouldn’t have 100 players in the pre-season squad but we wanted to give all of the kids an opportunity after having a few years of their footy interrupted.

“All players from the under 16s Bushrangers program come into the squad and then all of our under 17s from this season stay for pre-season so we had 50-odd players there and then we found another 50.”

Will Creevey, Ryan Hill, Cohen Paul, Mitchell Walters and Darby Wilson were all selected from Euroa’s side.

Weather holds up for Euroa shooting THE weather gods certainly smiled on the Euroa Clay Target Club on Sunday.

With extreme conditions forecast by the BOM, it was with some trepidation club members and visiting shooter gathered for the November competition shoot.

Surprisingly, the shooters were greeted with almost perfect shooting conditions.

No wind and stable light made for some good scores with some 8 shooters scoring the possible in the Cash Divide event.

The main event, the 90ft Medley Championship, was won by the evergreen veteran Fred Heinze from the Alexandra Club who shot the very good score of 145/150, some 9 targets ahead of the nearest competitor.

Next best was Euroa’s Tony Rohrlach who was tied with Geoff McClure on 141/150, with Tony going on to win the A grade shoot-off.

EUROA CRICKET A GRADE A YOUNG and enthusiastic Euroa A grade cricket side travelled to Mooroopna for the Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield season opener to face reigning premiers.

After weeks of uncertainty due to unfavourable weather conditions, Mooroopna officials produced a nice ground with a good looking pitch that had plenty in it for bat and ball.

Mooroopna won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Vaughan Kirk and Scott Hamilton opened the batting for the visitors.

Mooroopna import, Henry Barrow bowling from the McLennan Street end and Luke Zanchetta bowling from the grandstand end.

Euroa lost early wickets but with help from Nic Hill (30), Andrew Squires (15) and Lachie Hill (27) throughout the middle order, Euroa posted a healthy 149 from there allocated overs.

A strong partnership of 57 from local boys Nic and Lachie Hill steadied the ship.

Darby Wilson and Fletcher Paul bowled well to open the innings with Wilson making the breakthrough early.

New recruit, Siva Velagala bowled in tandem with Sham Dadallage with both bowlers showing outstanding stamina and fight.

Dadallage bowled well without reward.

Euroa showed plenty of spirit and fight against the reigning premiers but were unable to take the points with Mooroopna winning the match by five wickets.

Early signs were good, with junior import Walter Jackson being a standout opening the bowling in his B grade debut.

Wickets began to tumble thanks to Dion Grant’s unplayable spell after coming on first change and the team was supported by fantastic fielding early on.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be enough as Northerners chased the total in 26 overs with five wickets to spare.

B grade will play Nagambie in Euroa next week in a highly anticipated game.
