Equitable digital and telecommunications infrastructure were a centrepoint raised with

candidates.

The struggle for internet speed, reliability and phone coverage in Strathbogie Shire’s municipality is unacceptable.

Slow speeds, dropouts, congestion at peak usage times and no mobile signal are causing dissatisfaction and disparity.

Council believes telecommunications infrastructure is just as important as road, waste and utility services and the

lack of this infrastructure and service providers makes rural districts uncompetitive in attracting commercial and residential investment, and at a disadvantage.

“We need to ensure shire residents, businesses and visitors receive the same level of connectivity capacity and service reliability as those in metropolitan Melbourne and our larger regional centres,” Cr Binks said.

Liz Fisher said she agrees with Mayor Laura Binks that unreliable internet connectivity and mobile service is unacceptable.

“The independents are a referral service: they refer the bureaucrats to where mobile towers are needed,” Mrs Fisher said.

“They do not decide how much money is put aside to fix telecommunications black spots, this concerns me.”

By STEVE KELLY THE State Government has defended a decision to not include a stop for standard gauge trains, including those from the North East, at Sunshine as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project on the grounds that “very few passengers would use this service”.

Instead, all trains from the North East Line stop at Broadmeadows where there is a SmartBus connection direct to the airport and this will continue to be the case after 2029 when Melbourne Airport Rail is complete.

It comes after numerous rail lobby groups criticised plans this week to exclude North East train commuters from the planned airport link and transport super hub at Sunshine Station.

North East will not be afforded the service of a direct rail link that commuters from Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo lines will have.

of speedy, efficient direct access at Sunshine to MM1, other regional rail services and the airport.

“Instead of direct access at Sunshine, these passengers would be forced to deviate east to the city, adding substantially to journey times.”

Transport for Everyone (T4e) and Transport for Mel-

bourne (TfM) spokesman Roger Taylor said it makes no sense to exclude an interchange with the standard gauge line at Sunshine, especially as it could be re-instated at marginal cost.

However, the State Government contradicts the lobby groups’ references to journey times and cost

to accommodate standard gauge rail at Sunshine.

Information provided by the government says that transferring at Broadmeadows will provide a far shorter travel time than travelling down to Sunshine and then transferring backwards to the airport.

“In the future, the Subur-

ban Rail Loop will provide a rail connection direct from Broadmeadows to the airport, and many other destinations across Melbourne,” it read.

“Providing a standard gauge platform at Sunshine would be accessed by very few passengers, be very expensive and become completely redundant in the future.

“Only a small number of Albury/Sydney XPT passenger services currently travel through Sunshine and do not stop.

“The majority of scheduled North East passenger services from Shepparton/ Seymour - around 260 a week - travel via Essendon and the Craigieburn Line.”

The State Government said it and the Commonwealth Government jointly agreed that standard gauge trains will not stop at Sunshine as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

The total capital cost of the Sunshine alignment was estimated to be between $8 and $13 billion with state and federal governments to contribute $5 billion each.

By GUS RIDDER BOHO Rural Fire Brigade has thanked the Violet Town Community Opportunity Shop for their incredibly generous donation at their social night barbecue.

Representatives from the opshop were invited to the Boho brigade’s quarterly social night at the Boho Fire Shed on Friday, March 4.

The social night was attended by over 40 members of the local community and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) regional office.

During the evening, the Boho brigade presented the op-shop’s representatives with a certificate of appreciation for the donation of $1500 that was made towards the

purchase of a ride-on lawnmower.

Special guests Sheryl Taylor, Julie Ryan and John Ryan from the Violet Town Community Opportunity Shop were responsible for the donation.

Julie Ryan discussed why the op shop had decided to donate to the Boho brigade.

“Due to a very successful start to the New Year, we are very pleased to announce that we are able to re-commence donating funds to Violet Town groups and organisations that require some help,” she said.

“This money allowed them to purchase a ride-on mower to enable them to keep the large area of grass surrounding the station fire safe.”

Purple Day coming up in Euroa to spread the word

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa community will be recognising the importance of epilepsy awareness for Purple Day on Saturday, March 26.

Purple Day is held annually across the world, with the focus being on raising awareness, dispelling myths, and increasing support to those who have epilepsy.

Gayle and the team at Mawson’s Bakery will be joining Euroa resident Andrew McGavin to help recognise Purple Day. There will be special purple treats made in the bakery on Saturday with proceeds of the purple sales being sent to the Epilepsy Foundation.

The Euroa Community Action Group is also planning on establishing some further initiatives for this cause.

Andrew McGavin has been an eager volunteer for this cause since his own epilepsy diagnosis as a teenager in 1995.

“It’s important to me because it can be a lonely journey living with epilepsy and it helps to talk about it,” he said.

“Like most people until I had my first seizure I knew little about it.”

Mr McGavin’s involvement in epilepsy awareness has been longstanding and rewarding.

I’ve been fortunate in my life to do volunteer work for the Epilepsy Foundation helping out with Family Camps, Adult Getaways and Youth Retreats,” he said.

“We want to make this something we can do yearly to keep raising awareness, we have plans to put together a group to organise other events and arrange next year’s purple day.”

ENERGY: The Historical Museum at the Farmers Arms Hotel is one community group that will receive funding for energy audits.

Energy boost for shire community groups on offer ENERGY audits have been announced for three community facilities in the Strathbogie Shire.

These include the Euroa Historical and Genealogical Society, Strathbogie Memorial Hall and The Tablelands Community Centre in Ruffy.

The energy audits are part of Sustainability Victoria’s Community Climate Change and Energy Action Program.

Shire Mayor Cr Laura Binks explained that these audits would provide benefits to each of the community facilities by providing energy efficient measures and upgrades for renewable energy.

“We are pleased to be able to conduct the audits thanks to the Sustainability Victoria grant funding,” she said.

“They’ll be working with Victorian community groups over the next year to upgrade the energy efficiency of community facilities

and adopt renewable energy solutions that will deliver significant reductions in energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions and provide greater year-round comfort.”

All three of the community groups were excited about the opportunity provided by this funding.

Society president John Gilbert appreciated that the funds would allow for an energy audit to be conducted at the facility.

“We will look into a couple of possibilities once the audit has been completed which certainly opens to door for us,” he said.

Hall treasurer Henry O’Connor was also optimistic on the benefits of an energy audit.

“Being a community hall and with our limited resources it is important that we understand how energy is being used within the hall

and is it in the most efficient manner,” he said.

Centre chairperson Fiona Steel recognised that the audits could help keep the popular facility an attractive destination for the community.

“Any energy savings that are identified will mean the cost to the community is reduced,” she said.

“As a small farming community there is a need for the committee of management to keep costs down to ensure that the facility remains a viable and vibrant location for private and community gatherings.”

Local raises awareness on leukemia

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL AMY Thiele’s father Neville Belcher has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) and his daughter has been advocating on his condition ever since.

Raised in Strathbogie, Mr Belcher settled in Euroa.

A carpenter by trade, him and his mate Noel formed well-known local building company Willcox & Belcher, later expanding into hospitality to include the Cobram Hot Bake.

“There was nothing that couldn’t be done,” Mrs Thiele said.

“Nev would always find a way.

“And when he devised a plan, he always took his time to ensure his craft was nothing short of perfect.”

But the diagnose arrived, leaving Mr Belcher’s family in distress.

“On January 3, 2022 after some abnormal blood tests, I took my father to Melbourne for further blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy,” Mrs Thiele said.

“Shortly after came the devastating diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML).

“Dad then deteriorated quickly.

“A persistent fever, paleness, weight loss, lethargy, loss appetite were just some of his initial symptoms.”

Thankfully due to further advancements in blood cancer treatments over the past few years, palliative care was not the only option.

Standard treatment or clinical trials were put on the board.

“Dad was looking to do a clinical trial, which looked promising, and was going to be expanded regionally into Shepparton, which would have saved hours of travel time to receive vital treatment,” Mrs Thiele said.

“It was during this time that I started thinking there has to

be more that we can do.

“That was when the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave came to mind.

“After learning, their goal is to “Shave the world of blood cancer” by assisting families on their cancer journey as well as investing into further research to finding new treatment options, it seemed like a no-brainer.

“Let’s shave our noggins.

“I pitched this to dad, and he wanted to join in too, shaving his mo.

“I’ve never seen dad with facial hair, so it was good to see his spirits up, taking a proactive approach to his diagnosis, but also to help oth-

“So he set about growing one.”

Unfortunately the trial was delayed several times.

After three weeks, the doctors abandoned it altogether and opted for a low dose chemo.

The following week, a new chemotherapy treatment regime started involving seven days of injections and daily pills.

“Finally dad responded well, and has recently been shifted to Shepparton for rehab, before heading home,” Mrs Thiele said.

“The way he has faced his leukaemia is also head on,

with a plan to get his life back.

“His positive attitude and his simple ‘go with the flow’ way of life are key.”

For Mrs Thiele, helping her dad get through this is a necessity as his young grandkids are counting on having a grandfather and thus for a long time.

“Nev was promoted to Grandpa in 2014 with his first grandson, and welcomed two more grandsons in 2017 and 2020,” she said.

“He comes camping with us a lot, the kids would always have a ball, even if Grandpa put their wheelbarrow up the tree so he wouldn’t trip over it.

“The grandkids, along with all of dad’s family and friends

have been key driving factors in him getting better.

“I keep saying he’s ‘Built Bogie Tough’ and he proves it every day.”

And so Mr belcher’s family is encouraging others to join our Greatest Shave team, the Thiele Crew, by shaving or colouring your own hair, or by making a donation.

MP Tania Maxwell has labelled the State Government’s response to an inquiry into management of the state‘s sex offenders a “slap in the face” to child sexual abuse victims.

Announced last week, the Labor Government committed to support in principle four recommendations made by the state‘s Legal and Social Issues Committee, and support in full a plan for the Department of Education and Training to adopt best

practice guidelines to prevent child sexual abuse in all forms.

However, with South Australia’s Labor opposition announcing sweeping reforms in the event of a state election win, Ms Maxwell said Victoria’s commitment fell short of the mark.

“Victorian Labor needs to show the same strong stance against child sex offenders as their colleagues in South Australia have,” she said.

“We need funding for preventative programs

in schools – when every school–aged child has access to a laptop or tablet, why can’t Victoria have mandatory online education to make sure our kids are staying safe from predators?

“Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (DHJP) was formed to take a strong stance against child sex offenders – we‘re working every day for fair, just, safe communities – we ask Labor to step up to the same goal.”

Promised reforms in South Australia included the introduction of a pub-

lic sex offender register, strengthened penalties for child sex offences, lifetime electronic monitoring for serious offenders released from prison and strengthened online offending laws.

Ms Maxwell and fellow DHJP MP Stuart Grimley said Victoria’s comparative lack of commitment to preventative education and a child sex offender disclosure scheme such as the one which has seen success in Western Australia and the United Kingdom was disappointing.

“I was shocked to read that on the same day, we have South Australian Labor announcing strong policies condemning child sexual abuse and the Victorian Government not endorsing committee recommendations to do the same here,” Mr Grimley said.

“It baffles me that eight hours down the road from Adelaide, Victoria has a government that won’t commit to simple recommendations such as a limited child sex offender disclosure scheme – parents have the right to know.”

Sick pay for casual workers VICTORIANS who work in casual or other insecure jobs will no longer be forced to choose between a day’s pay and looking after their health, thanks to the State Government’s Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee.

An Australian-first, the $245.6 million scheme will provide casual and contract workers a safety net when they need to take time off when they’re sick or need to care for loved ones.

Before the pandemic, many casual and contract workers were forced to choose between a day’s pay or their health.

Around one in five casual and contract workers work more than one job to earn a living - many without access to sick and carer’s pay.

Premier Daniel Andrews said when people have nothing to fall back on, they make a choice between the safety of their workmates and feeding their family.

“The last two years have shown just how difficult that choice can be for casual work-

ers - so we’re doing what we can to make sure it’s a choice they don’t have to make,” Mr Andrews said.

Workers are now able to register for the two-year pilot program, and it is anticipated more than 150,000 workers will be eligible in this first phase.

Eligible casual and contract workers in certain occupations will receive up to five days a year of sick or carer’s pay at the national minimum wage.

Occupations included in the first phase include hospitality workers, food trades workers and preparation assistants such as chefs and kitchen hands, supermarket and supply chain workers, retail and sales assistants, aged and disability care workers, cleaners and laundry workers and security guards.

The State Government is fully funding the scheme over the first two years, which is expected to demonstrate a reduction in workplace injuries and illness, general productivity improvements from healthier workers, and lower staff turno-

ver rates.

The government will also administer the program directly to workers, minimising the impost on businesses so they can focus on economic recovery.

Business groups and the state opposition slammed the trial.

The Victorian Chamber does not consider the $245.6 million dedicated to the Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee pilot program necessary.

“While paid leave to isolate was necessary and sensible during this pandemic to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this is no longer a significant issue as the pandemic impact is subsiding.

“Now is not the time for another cost to taxpayers when casual workers already have additional loading catered for in their hourly wage.”

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Paul Guerra said teh payment and the trial was unnecessary.

“While paid leave to isolate was necessary and sensible

during this pandemic to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this is no longer a significant issue as the pandemic impact is subsiding,” Mr Guerra said.

“Now is not the time for another cost to taxpayers when casual workers already have additional loading catered for in their hourly wage.

“There should be no expectation this trial should continue beyond the stated two years.”

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said while paid sick leave for casual workers might appear positive, someone’s got to pay for it.

“Just as businesses struggle to recover and rebuild from Daniel Andrews’ world record lockdowns, this new tax will cost jobs,” Mr Guy said.

“It will make it even harder for businesses to afford to take on staff.

“It’s not much good talking about paid sick leave if you can’t get a job in the first place.”

Bike aficionado gets an e-bike E-bike all the rage, g , even for antique q bike lover

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL artist and everything-with-two-wheels lover Bruce Hargrave has recently purchased an electric bike and to him, it’s the best decision ever.

Mr Hargrave, owner of two spectacular Penny -farthing bikes, which are a popular type of bicycle that was most used in the second half of the 19th century, at the time of the introduction of the French mass produced chaindriven bicycle Boneshaker and the English safety bicycle, didn’t let his love for vintage old school bikes prevent him to invest in modernity by purchasing an e-bike.

“People had been saying, Bruce, get yourself an e bike,” Mr Hargrave said.

“So as a bit of a gift to myself I thought, why not- so what to get?

“I have always loved , and still do love riding my ancient, well tried and true Avanti Ventura mountain bike and I come from a strong background of enthusiasm for vintage cycling- owning three Penny-farthings and a hobby horse, all of which have seen

“Then I kind of stumbled on the vintage e bike concept, a kind of oxymoronic mix of ancient style with modern technology and I was instantly in harmony with this concept.”

Mr Hargrave had never seen, let alone ridden a Valkree Scrambler, but somehow, living in Euroa in central Victoria, he was able to link up with Jill Crossland at Electric Bikes Brisbane.

“Now I am the excited owner of the Valkree Terre-

motto Scrambler e bike, and what enormous fun to ride, as well as pure street theatre,” he said.

“The bike is an aesthetic delight with build and finish to match.

“To glide along quiet country lanes in the evening, alone, or with chums is a joy.

“The power, gears and lights for night riding, as well as riding position all make for a top cycling experience and no licence or registration to bother with and all completely street legal which makes it all so easy. “

Board director calls on workplaces to embrace diversity GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) Board director Alana Johnson (AM) is calling on people to be agents for change within their workplaces to create equality in the water industry.

In GMW’s latest podcast episode, which goes lives tomorrow to mark International Women’s Day, Ms Johnson speaks about her journey from the farm to becoming the founding member of Women in Agriculture and the chair of the Victorian Women’s Trust.

“By the time I was appointed to the board of GMW, I had learned an awful lot about creating change, empowering people and developed a lot of skills around engagement in the context where ordinary people felt like they had a voice and could get involved,” she said.

“My move towards water was really from a point of view of my sense of social justice, of ordinary people having a say in the future of agriculture, of being an environmentalist and coming together and saying the future of water is one of the most important things that is a current issue.”

Ms Johnson said the recent move towards appointing 50 per cent women to all Victorian Government boards had been a breakthrough for diversity.

“We all know about unconscious bias and what operates that keeps people from moving towards diversity for all sorts of reasons,” she said.

“The journey for women onto boards has been incredibly hard which is why this is such a breakthrough because it was so hard to break through as a woman and there was so much going against you.”

And while the water industry is very heavily male engineer focused, Ms Johnson said she was starting to see that shift and evolve over time.

“We need to make sure we do proactive things to create greater diversity in opportunity in our workforce for not only women but people of non-English speaking background and our First Nations people, that’s been a huge part of me wanting to be here,” she said.

Ms Johnson said she had been welcomed with open arms since joining the GMW board in October 2015, of which five current members are women.

“All the men on the board been absolutely wonderful to work with and I have had an opportunity of realising what it’s like to do that serious board work without having any concerns about your gender that might work against you,” she said.

“I can only commend the people who’ve been my fellow board members during my time and now we have both a female chairperson and female managing director who are there for their skill and expertise is an extraordinary example of how well our organisation has moved in that direction,” she said.

“We have come a long way and I am happy to be part of watching GMW become the sort of OFFICIAL organisation where diversity is embraced and that we become a place of opportunity for everybody and that’s an exciting thing to be part of.”

Ms Johnson, who was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2018, said IWD went beyond a day of celebration.

“It’s a time to stop and take note not of how much has been achieved for women in terms of their participation in society but also to reflect on how far we have to go,” she said.

“We might have made great gains on women’s participation in society.

“Unfortunately we have not made great gains in women’s personal safety.

“We still live in a society where women continue to be killed because of domestic violence, and are sexually harassed.”

Third Age Club back for lunch THE Euroa Third Age Club held its monthly seniors lunch last week at the Euroa Hotel.

This was the second dinner the club has been able to host since the re-commencement

of activities at the end of January.

21 people attended and all those attending thoroughly enjoyed a delicious two course lunch provided by the hotel.

The club wishes to thank all

History board meetings conclude in Longwood LONGWOOD East Land Care has completed their community consultation meetings for the creation of a history board documenting the heyday of old Longwood.

The group held two successful workshops at the Longwood Community Centre where information was provided by long-time local resi-

dents and history buffs.

The result of these workshops was an abundance of articles, pictures, memories and historical knowledge that will make a significant contribution to the board.

The history board project was undertaken following a grant from the Strathbogie Shire and the support of Strath-

Regional communities demand better roads LOCAL roads have failed to satisfy regional ratepayers according new data from Ratepayers Victoria.

In the electorate of Euroa, only 43 per cent of locals were satisfied with the standard of their roads.

Member for Euroa and newly appointed shadow minister for roads, Steph Ryan, stated that this information accurately reflected the views of those in her electorate.

“Country drivers are sick of dodging potholes and crumbling road shoulders every time we leave home,” she said.

Ms Ryan also declared that the state government is unaware of the current condition of country roads.

“Last sitting week the Minister told the Parliament he was making country roads safer and smoother,” she said.

“The hypocrisy and ignorance is extraordinary.

“Anyone who has driven the roads in our region of late knows that is not true.”

Roads became part of Ms Ryan’s portfolio following a reshuffle of the opposition’s frontbench in February, taking over from Louise Staley.

Breaking down barriers for Victorians with a disability A NEW state disability plan released by the Andrews Labor Government will drive change towards a fairer community supporting every Victorian to fully participate in all areas of life.

Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Anthony Carbines on Monday launched Inclusive Victoria: State Disability Plan 2022-2026, setting the agenda for the government’s approach to building a more inclusive and accessible community for the more than 1.1 million Victorians with disability.

Victorians with disability will be consulted on creating a new Disability Inclusion Act, which will provide a modern and stronger framework to drive change across government.

The government will also consult on establishing an

Australian-first Commissioner for Disability Inclusion to drive improvements in practice in the public sector and promote inclusion across Victoria.

Amendments to the Disability Act 2006 will be made to increase residential protections for Victorians in disability accommodation, and to strengthen quality and safeguards in services for people with disability.

An exposure draft of the Disability Inclusion Bill will be released later this year to give Victorians the opportunity to shape these important reforms.

Co-design with people with disability will be at the heart of this work.

The government has worked closely with the disability sector and advocates to develop the plan, which will drive systemic reform in key areas, including:

• ensuring people with disability are at the table in designing policies, services and programs; • working with Aboriginal Victorians with disability and listening to what works best for them; • recognising and addressing forms of structural discrimination people with disability face; and • building accessibility into everything government does.

Inclusive Victoria: State Disability Plan 2022–2026 is available in accessible formats, including easy read, braille, audio and Auslan at vic.gov.au/state-disabilityplan.

Hire professionals for your needs to make sure job done properly WORLD Plumbing Day was celebrated on Friday with the central theme of this year being to always hire a professional.

This day was established to recognise the link between good quality plumbing, health and environmental sustainability.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA), the state’s plumbing regulator, believes that this particular theme will reinforce the need for safety.

They encourage

consumers to hire a professional practitioner for any plumbing work and check that they have the appropriate credentials.

The VBA’s state building surveyor Andrew Cialini believes that this day will keep consumers aware of how to remain safe and will maintain confidence in the industry.

“The majority of plumbers do the right thing and help keep consumers safe by carrying out important work,” he said.

“As the plumbing

regulator, the VBA helps to protect the health and safety of people and the integrity of water supply and wastewater systems.”

Mr Cialini said that all licensed and registered plumbers are issued with a photo ID card that lists the type of plumbing work they are eligible to do.

“All plumbers should carry this ID, and you can request to see it at any time,” he said.

“Only a licensed plumber can issue a compliance certificate to certify that their work

complies with the relevant plumbing regulations, codes and standards.”

The VBA also highlighted a need for consumers who purchase plumbing products to always look for an industry seal of approval, the WaterMark logo.

Items purchased from overseas can be checked on the Australian Building Codes Board WaterMark online database.

Victorians can visit vba.vic.gov.au/check to confirm their plumber is registered or licensed.

Ideal conditions help fuel planned burn commitment PLANNED burns are set to increase statewide this month, in the wake of a mild summer which has created ideal autumn burning conditions.

The majority of the 1400 burns planned over the next three years are slated to take place throughout March and April, with higher forest moisture levels and lower temperatures resulting in increased opportunities to burn throughout the year.

Other treatments such as clearing, mowing, mulching, slash-

ing and strategic fuel breaks have been undertaken in recent months to allow firefighters to more easily access and suppress unplanned blazes.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said being prepared well ahead of a fire season was becoming increasingly important as a result of climate change.

“We need to burn when conditions are right, to reduce the risk of fighting larger bushfires later

- it’s crucial we are prepared for bushfires especially as their frequency and severity increases due to climate change,” she said.

“Investing in risk reduction strategies like planned burns is vital to protect property and our precious environment.”

The initiative has also seen 1692 cultural burns outlined over the next three years, following extensive consultation with Traditional Owners to support cultural and land management aspirations,

which include managing food, medicines, flora regeneration, fauna habitat protection and healing country’s spirit.

Some 470 planned burns were undertaken during the 2020-21 financial year, addressing 133,000 hectares of public land.

OVENS Valley MP Tim McCurdy has lauded the return of a full duck season, with hunting set to begin today.

The 2022 season will permit the hunting of six of the eight Victorian game duck species between 8am on March 16, and 30 minutes after sunset on June 13.

Eligible ducks include Pacific Black Duck, Mountain Duck, Chestnut Teal, Grey Teal, Pinkeared Duck and Wood Duck, while Blue-winged Shoveler and Hardhead species have been identified as threatened and will be ineligible to be hunted throughout the season.

Mr McCurdy said he was pleased to hear the 2022 duck season would not be curtailed, and encouraged residents to participate in a responsible and safe manner.

“In late January 2022 I expressed my concerns for the return of a full duck season this year - we are now in March and have finally received confirmation of what this year’s season will look like,” he said.

“Despite hunters being frustrated by the 8am start for the first four days and four bird per day bag limit, it is good to see that the season is going ahead.

“Although this duck season has been modified in accordance with the Game Management Authority findings, it is important that this legitimate sport continues.”

29 year old Daniel Prentice is a North East landscape photographer who held his first exhibition at Bush gatherings nearly five years ago.

Growing up in Whorouly and then living in Tarrawingee gave Mr Prentice a deep love of the landscape and a passion for adventure.

After his first successful exhibition he spent three of the last four years travelling Australia collecting images from Australia’s wildest and most amazing landscapes.

“Climbing into gorges, travelling the outback and hiking to the top of mountains,” Mr Prentice said.

“I sacrificed a lot to put myself in a position to shoot these images, but the experience was more than worth it.

“Eventually 12 images out my literal thousands made

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Make jam to prevent spread of fruit flies OVERFLOWING fruits and vegetables in your garden should be made into jams or sauces according to the latest fruit fly advice from Agriculture Victoria.

Queensland fruit fly (QFF) populations are typically at their highest in spring as temperatures rise, but they can remain active in autumn and winter if hot weather persists and there is suitable produce available.

Keeping your garden free from unwanted fallen or rotten fruit will stop QFF from breeding in your backyard.

Agriculture Victoria statewide fruit fly coordinator Cathy Mansfield has warned that

many homegrown fruit and veggies may be carrying maggots and QFF despite appearing healthy on the outside.

“Cutting open fruit and vegetables is one of the best ways to check for QFF, so whether you’re part of a big family sauce day or working solo in the kitchen keep an eye out for creamy coloured maggots inside your plums, peaches, quinces or tomatoes,” she said.

Ms Mansfield suggests that creating jams and sauces and sharing it with your neighbours is an effective method of avoiding the spread of QFF in your produce.

“Instead of shar-

ing your backyard bounty fresh, cut it up and use it to make preserves or pastes as this will go a long way to stopping the spread of QFF around your neighbourhood,” she said.

Agriculture Victoria has provided a wide range of resources on its website to educate help home gardeners control QFF, including tips on monitoring, garden hygiene, netting, baiting, insecticides and trapping.

Farm safety competition opens for kids AGRICULTURE Victoria and Kidsafe have partnered together for their third annual Farm Safety Creative Competition.

The competition encourages children to get creative while designing educational materials about farm safety.

This year’s theme is ‘Farm Safety Heroes,’ which focuses on making the farm a safe experience for everyone who lives, works or visits a farm.

Kids interested in participating are able to submit their choice of creative entry.

This can include videos, illustrated stories, comic strips, posters, collages or radio advertisements.

Winners of the competition will feature in a state-wide education campaign which will aim to increase farm safety awareness among Victorian families.

FARM SAFETY: Kids are being asked to get creative around educational materials for farm safety.

Agriculture Victoria’s acting executive director of Agriculture Policy, Dr Julie Simons, believes this is a perfect way to encourage safety on farms while providing an enjoyable activity for children and families.

“This initiative encourages chil-

dren and adults to take an active role in farm safety in an interactive and fun way,” she said.

The Farm Safety Creative Competition is free to enter and open to all regional and metropolitan schools, early childhood centres and families in Victoria.

Sustainable agriculture online conference open to public REGENERATE Earth, the Australian Academy of Science, Frank Fenner Foundation and Sustainable Population Australia are hosting a conference discussing grass-roots regenerative agriculture this week.

The conference, titled ‘Making Australian Agriculture Sustainable’ is held in Canberra but is being made available online for those who may be interested on Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18.

The keynote speaker for the event will be renowned farmer and author Dr Charles Massy who won awards for his book ‘Call of the Reed Warbler’.

COVID-19 cases still in thousands THOUSANDS of Australians are still getting COVID-19 each day, even as the nation’s governments want to wind back isolation requirements and reduce the reliance on PCR testing.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee is urgently reviewing both changes following the decisions made at last Friday’s national cabinet meeting.

NSW reported a further 13,093 new infections on Sunday, along with seven deaths.

In Victoria there were 5192 new cases and four deaths, while Tasmania and the ACT posted 932 and 649 new infections respectively.

Another three people have also died in Queensland, as the sunshine state added 3669 new cases.

Western Australia reported its 13th death on Sunday, a woman in her 80s, on top of another 3602 cases.

It lifts the nation’s death toll since the pandemic began to 5586.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison believes quarantine requirements are starving businesses of staff, and scrapping the need to isolate for extended periods will help the nation’s economic recovery.

Rather than a specified time frame, otherwise healthy people with mild respiratory illnesses will instead be encouraged to undertake voluntary selfisolation only while symptomatic.

Mr Morrison predicted a challenging winter, with COVID-19 cases and influenza likely to have an effect.

The government has set aside $2.1 billion to prepare for winter, including $1.2 billion to help protect residential aged care and disability care sectors, $356 million to protect vulnerable population groups and a further $571 million for vaccines.

The government is also deciding on plans to handle

a new and potentially more transmissible sub-variant of Omicron.

Victorian COVID cases AS of Sunday, the number of Victorians in hospital has grown by 20 to 195.

Of those, 25 are in intensive care and eight are on ventilation.

Active cases in the state remain steady at 40,606.

Victoria has 62.5 per cent of adults vaccinated with three doses, as mandatory jab rules come into effect

After being pushed back, the new deadline has passed for aged care, disability, emergency service, meat processing, quarantine and food distribution workers to get their third jab by 11.59pm on Saturday.

It means these workers including contractors, volunteers and students on placement - must have received a third dose to attend work or hold a valid exemption.

Brisbane River clean up may take weeks RUBBERNEKCERES have been warned to avoid “disaster tourism” and stay off the Brisbane River, with the clearing of debris caused by devastating floods expected to take weeks.

Maritime authorities say more than 1000 tonnes of debris have already been removed from Brisbane waterways after the “wettest February in Queensland in 130 years” caused deadly flooding.

But Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Kell Dillon says more than 150 objects are still to be dragged from the bottom of the river, impeding important shipping channels.

He warned people “taking selfies” to stay off the water, saying they are interfering with authorities working hard to restore the Port of Brisbane to its full capacity.

“What we don’t need is disaster tourism, people going around taking selfies with damaged equipment in the background - stay off the river, it is just too dangerous for recreational purposes,” he said on Sunday.

“There is still a lot of debris on the surface or just below, the currents are still high and the water is very dirty.

“People on the water obstructs contractors and our staff from getting on with the important job of clearing the river.”

Mr Dillon said they had prioritised clearing shipping channels around the Port of Brisbane that created up to $50 billion in trade a year for Queensland before the floods.

He said they still faced a monumental task despite already removing tonnes of surface de-

Queensland police badly injured in head-on collision QUEENSLAND’S police commissioner says it is an “absolute miracle” no one died in a head on collision between a patrol van and a ute driven by a man allegedly fleeing a stabbing.

Katarina Carroll says the 37-year-old senior constable driving the van is in a stable condition in intensive care after “extensive surgery” overnight but will require months of rehabilitation.

However she was surprised no one was killed after watching the “confront-

Australian radioactive waste repatriated from UK NATIONAL nuclear agency ANSTO, police and security authorities have completed an operation to repatriate two tonnes of radioactive waste sent to the UK for reprocessing in the 1990s.

The four 500-kilogram canisters of vitrified material safely arrived in Sydney overnight, authorities said on Sunday.

It’s the second time radioactive waste has been repatriated to Australia, the first being in 2015 and the

next not anticipated until the mid-2030s.

About 85 per cent of waste generated at ANSTO is directly associated with production of nuclear medicine including that used in the diagnosis of heart and lung conditions and treatment of some cancers.

The scheme is expected to boost the economy by $2.4 billion over 10 years with more than 168,000 people expected to take up job op-

portunities interstate each year, including electricians, architects and real estate agents.

From July 1, more businesses and workers will benefit as more work licences and registrations become part of the scheme.

Last preliminary finals at Euroa

By AUDREY MCINTOSH AGAIN the weather was kind to the bowlers who came to Euroa last Saturday to play in the preliminary finals of the division four and division six south in the Goulburn Valley Saturday Pennant competition.

Nagambie played Seymour and won this match 107/76 and in division six south Alexandra defeated Eildon 87/46.

The grand finals of these matches will also be played at Euroa next Saturday, March 19, where Nagambie will play Seymour VRI and Alexandra is to play Eildon.

Euroa was thankful for the excellent greens to play on for the finals.

Raffle winners were Ray Holt from Alexandra and Robert Brown and Dot Dillon of Seymour.

On Sunday it was great to see holiday makers playing bowls on the Euroa greens.

Champions matches are well on the way to being completed.

A list is on the board for nominations for the office bearers for the coming season from 2022/23.

Dubler wins sportsmanship gong CEDRIC Dubler’s selfless performance in the decathlon in Tokyo has been recognised with the Queenslander winning the inaugural Cecil Healy Award for outstanding sportsmanship at an Olympic Games.

The AOC on Tuesday acknowledged the decathlete’s efforts after he defied a hamstring injury to run the concluding 1500m and cajole teammate Ash Moloney to a

bronze medal in the event.

AOC boss Matt Carroll says Dubler’s endeavours provided one of the special moments of the Olympics.

The award is named after Cecil Healy, a former swimmer who is the only Australian Olympic gold medal winner to be killed in action during World War I. “Cecil Healy would have approved,” Carroll said.

“In the closing stages, Ce-

dric had no other thought, other than the possibility for his teammate winning an Olympic medal.

“He could have easily chosen to improve his own standing in the event, but he made another choice and it was a noble one.

“Cedric is honoured for his selfless actions to assist his younger teammate.”

Dubler, 27, said he is stunned to be recognised for

the act and proud to win an award in Healy’s name.

“The camaraderie amongst decathletes is something very special, but I also felt a really strong bond within our Australian Team in Tokyo,” he said.

“I am still stunned that my spontaneous decision to urge him on struck such a chord around the world.

“I definitely can’t compare my actions with those of Cec-

il Healy, but I am immensely proud to be the first Australian to win this award, named in his honour.”

Demons to avoid AFL flag hangover: Viney MELBOURNE midfielder Jack Viney is confident the Demons have avoided letting standards slip after their drought-breaking AFL premiership.

The Demons will enter a season as reigning premiers for the first time in 57 years.

The stunning triumph in Perth last September remains fresh in the memory of Melbourne supporters as they prepare for a grand final rematch against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG on Wednesday night.

But Viney, who experienced some dark times as a young player at Melbourne before becoming a premiership hero, believes the Demons have maintained the rage over summer.

“Nothing is guaranteed for this season and we’re going to have plenty of challenges thrown at us, starting this Wednesday night,” he said on Monday.

“That’s (premiership hangover) the worry coming into a pre-season where you’ve achieved the ultimate.

“I haven’t seen anything to sug-

gest that this pre-season.

“I’ve been really happy with the training standards and the amount of work we’ve put in so really excited to get a crack.”

Demons’ Goodwin speaks on review leaks MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin has wasted no time contemplating who might have leaked historic accusations of bullying and improper behaviour directed against him.

The 45-year-old was last month the subject of numerous stories about his behaviour prior to 2021, leading to his position as Demons coach briefly coming under question.

Goodwin was cleared of all allegations, and they only emerged several months after Goodwin became Melbourne’s first premiership coach since 1964.

He addressed the reports on Tuesday at a press conference for the first time, ahead of the Demons opening their season with a grand final rematch against the Western Bulldogs.

“I don’t put any energy into that at all,” Goodwin said when asked who might have leaked the information.

“Where my energy sits is with our playing group, with our staff, our team and our football club.

“What I do know is we’ve got an incredibly united footy club from (president) Kate Roffey to (chief execu-

tive) Gary Pert to the whole way through.

“We made some significant change, we built some success and we’ve got a great program in place and I don’t put any energy into that.

“The people around me know what I’m about, they know who I am and how I go about my business and the staff do as well.

“We’ve got a really strong environment, a caring environment and a really respectful one.”

Juniors combine to create new league IN 2022 the Goulburn Murray region has seen the merging of three local leagues into the newly created Goulburn Murray Junior League (GMJL).

The GMJL comprises of previous junior leagues Shepparton District Junior Football League, Seymour District Junior Football and Netball League and Goul-

burn Campaspe Junior Football League.

This follows the recommendations of bringing all three junior leagues together under a single governance from the AFL Goulburn Murray Junior Football Future Directions Project which was completed in 2018.

GMJL Advisory Group

member Mark Lambourn said, “A major motivating factor behind the implementation of the merging of the three leagues was the genuine concern over the lack of competitive balance across the three junior competitions.”

The GMJL will continue to provide a competitive junior environment where fun and

development is the primary focus, prioritised over winning and will see three divisions under the new league’s governance.

The leagues have come together with a shared vision of developing junior football and netball.

Each league brings with it a rich history, which will allow a broad understand-

ing of the competition balance, participation outcomes and club sustainability to achieve a collective goal to ensure regional and rural sporting clubs take a strong step in a positive direction.

Avenel bowls club championship success THE Avenel bowls club has seen the finish of the bowling season with the playing of the club championship.

The weather turned it on for the Avenel bowls club on Wednesday,

March 9 and an all-round lovely day of bowls was had by all.

After a tumultuous day of bowling, a mixed bag of results and a lot of breaths held at the end, the mixed pairs club championship

went to Pam Pedder and Noel Slater, runners up Jenny Furletti and Spud Furletti.

The club would like to thank all of the weekly volunteers that make it possible to hold events like this.

Veteran golfers play off for Tom Downie Shield MONDAY, March 7 was a significant date for the Veterans Golf Association as we were booked to play against the Central Districts Vets for the coveted Tom Downie Shield.

Brian Smith of Central District was notified late that Heathcote Golf Club was unavailable for our Goulburn Valley versus Central District challenge and thankfully he was able to transfer the match to Axedale.

We must thank Brian for his hard work, and the Axedale Golf Club for their support and hospitality on the day.

The weather was perfect and over 120 players arrived to represent their respective teams.

There was a buzz around the clubhouse as players headed off to their respective tee off locations.

It was noted early that the Central Vets players had a spring in their step.

As a culmination of over four years’ development, the three Leagues becoming one will develop the transition and retention of players, and ultimately improve competitive balance, participation outcomes and club sustainability.

The first observation was that the greens were rolling perfectly.

The second observation was the speed on the greens.

The Axedale Golf Club is preparing the course for a major tournament and the greens were faster than normal which made scoring harder, especially those from Goulburn Valley.

The best stableford scores for Goulburn Valley were David Fullager on 33 points, Gary Bow with 30 points, Alan Dalton and Syd Roughedge with 29 points.

For the Central Victorian Vets it was Malcolm Hall with a great score of 38 points, with the next best being Fred Kath, Brian Keating and John Geldari, all on 34 points.

Down the line we had Geoff Margery and Phil Masterton on 32, Gary Beames and Tim Chisolm

on 31, and then the best of the rest were Greg Crowe, Ross Stevens, Trevor Curram, Dom Pomped, Kors Van Eyk, Don Burbeck, Brett Hand, Gary Hutchins, Peter Scown, Denis Anthony, Alan Champion, John Fuller, Geoff Hamill, Laurie Harding, Tony Olson and Des Ramsey.

The course had six par 3’s so more than the normal opportunity to grab a nearest the pin.

On the 1st we had Gary Beams.

The 6th was Doug Osborne, Ross Stevens on the 12th whilst Fred Kath picked up the prize with a great shot on the 14th.

Mick Kehoe got closest on the 16th and Mick Stevens grabbed the long 18th.

Unfortunately for the Goulburn Valley Vets, our overall average was 25.5, which was short of our opposition from the Central Victorian Vets who had a great average of 28.5 stabl-

eford points on the day.

Brian Smith the President from Central Victoria was very pleased to take the Tom Downie Shield from our Goulburn Valley President, Ron Wilkinson.

Ron relayed his thoughts to all the players regarding a great man that the shield honours. Tom Downie was a wonderful person, who is held in very high esteem across both the Goulburn Valley and Central Victorian Vets.

Next time it will be on home turf and we look forward to the challenge to get the shield back in Goulburn Valley hands.

Our next GV Vets is at Deniliquin on Monday the 21st of March and we look forward to playing this great course again.

It is wonderful the support we get from our players representing Deniliquin Golf Club so let’s make sure we make the effort to support them.

THE Labour Day holiday must have started early as not many regulars played on Tuesday 8th.

Chris Bennett put on a masterclass, accumulating 39 points.

For those that didn’t play they missed the after golf event as one of our new members Richard Hayes being a chef produced some fresh oysters on ice, then proceeded to shuck them and serve.

On Saturday March 12 Stableford was played and Chris Bennett did the double winning again with 42 points, his handicap will suffer.

Mens’ drive and pitch on the tenth (sponsored by John Moore) went to that man Chris Bennett.

Ladies drive and pitch on the fourth (sponsored by Helen Hill) to Kerry Hewlett.

Straightest drive (sponsored by Rohan and Lindy Harris) which was on the line was won by Eleanor Barns.

Good to catch up with Alistair Thomson and John Opray playing a round and equipping themselves well.

Winning on Thursday at Seymour in an Ambrose Event were Aron Hines, Rickie Brodie, Chris Bourke and Steven Lister, they had a field day walking away with the cash, the handicap score was 15 under, unbelievable.

Golf next Saturday March 19 is opening day with Kristen Moore looking after proceedings.

The game to be played is a Fourball Aggregate draw for partner, should be fun for all concerned.

Labour Day tennis tournament pulls record crowd EUROA Lawn Tennis’s annual Labour Day tennis tournament is one of the town’s largest events of the year, there’s no disputing that.

However, coming out of the pandemic lockdowns and years off from social sport, the 2022 tournament has reached new heights, selling over 500 entries in just two days with early bird tickets and then capping at 570 after general release.

With entries coming from all around the local district and some hailing from as far as Melbourne, the event

draws generous crowds into the township, boosting local economy.

The event takes the dedication and hard work of over 40 volunteers and working in conjunction with the Friendlies committee and the Strathbogie Shire, these committed individuals manage to run a safe and compliant event year after year.

10 temporary grass courts are erected annually on the friendlies oval, supported by the admirable green keeping efforts of Brendan Redfern and his team.

This year it has become

tougher than ever to run a large scale community sport event with the introduction of COVID compliance rules and regulations, but with help from the shire’s events team the double vaxxed event has gone forward a great success.

The only limitation to the size of the event moving forward is the willingness of local volunteers and access to accommodation in the district, and with the popularity of alternative accommodation such as AirBnB’s increasing, the future of the event looks bright.

Longwood FNC announces netball teams for season THE Longwood Football and Netball club announced their netball squads for the 2022 season last week.

This included the naming of the A grade netball captain, which will be Toni Watson.

Toni joined her brother

and father in joining the club in 2017, and has been a dedicated member of the Redlegs ever since.

Toni is a strong and determined leader and looks to make a big impact on court in the 2022 season.

On Saturday, March 19

Longwood host a practice match against Broadford, then another against Dunolly on Saturday March 26, followed by The Suburban Footballer that night with $30 tickets available all day at the clubrooms.

Longwood are looking to fill all junior netball squads; under 11, 13 and 15 and under 13 football.

Dual registration is allowed and all are welcome and encouraged to come down and have a go, experience not necessary.

JUNIOR SUPERSTARS: The Woolworths Junior Blasters program finished with a bang.

Junior cricketers wrap up fun-filled season of skill development

By HEATHER CROSBIE ON Friday, March 4 Euroa Cricket Club saw the completion of the Woolworths Junior Blasters

program.

The program was run by senior cricketers Paul Anderson and Rahis Baig with the assistance of junior/senior player Walter

Jackson saw 22 participants aged 5-7yrs of age, undertake the activities.

The program aims to develop skills in the participants such as

coordination with catching, bowling and batting skills as well as encouraging team work and cooperation.

As part of the program four of our participants

participated in the Blasters entertainment on the MCG during the Boxing Day test.

A feat that is the envy of many of the older players who have never had the

opportunity to play at the MCG. We would like to thank all the parents for support and we look forward to next season’s program.

Ag show finally makes a return THE Euroa Agricultural society show went ahead on Saturday, March 5 despite the looming threat of more rain from the night before.

The turnout was well above the usual numbers, with many local cancelled shows from the 2020/21 season now going ahead throughout the month of March.

Show organisers were inundated with entrants and at times struggled to keep up, however the day was an overall suc-

Friday, March 18 is the club’s presentation night for the first time in two years, the evening begins at 6pm bookings need to be forwarded to Ronda or Tim. Next week’s golf will be a stableford with J. Ezard on office duty and P. Neville in the bar.
