ON Boxing Day 2017, beautiful nine year old Chloe Perry passed on because of brain cancer.

The little girl was diagnosed aged five in 2013 and spent a little bit less than half her life on earth fighting tirelessly against her sickness, but didn’t end up winning the battle after a long and brave fight.

On February 19, of 12 athletic locals will be gathering at 34-36 Railway Street Euroa to take part in Connor’s Erg Challenge.

Spearheaded by Daniel Godsmark and Dustin Perry, they are rowing in

teams to put 100km on every machine at The Euroa Gym, and raising money for RCD Foundation-Robert Connor Dawes paediatric brain cancer research as they do so.

Chloe’s dad, Dustin Perry, said they had just passed their $10,000 goal, so they changed the goal to $20,000.

In April 2017, following Chloe’s passing, her dad wrote to then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

regarding the low survival rates of brain cancer and the lack of funding by the government.

The letter went viral and Mr Perry met with Mr Turnbull and also with Minister for Health Greg Hunt.

“There is now a $130million research fund called the Australian Brain Cancer Mission, directly because of Chloe,” Mr Perry said.

“Billionaire Andrew

Forrest challenged me to raise $2500 myself, and said he will then donate $2500 himself.”

But the fight is far from being over, and Mr Perry is still working tirelessly to raise funds for cancer research.

Avenel Kindergarten showcases new features

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL AVENEL Kindergarten upgraded many aspects of its educational facilities this year.

Emma Larsen, service leader at Avenel Kindergarten, said “Alongside many GRPSA services, our enrolments have increased dramatically over the last two years, leading to a focus on providing every child with opportunities to grow, learn and develop in our indoor and outdoor environments”.

“Thanks to the support of the Goulburn Region Preschool Association, the Strathbogie Shire, the Department of Education and Training and our Parent Advisory Group, we have been able to provide innovative spaces for children to explore and discover,” Mrs Larsen said.

“Each of these projects focuses on accessibility and sustainability, and we are thankful to have been able to partner with so many small local businesses to bring them to life.”

ALITA White has joined Euroa Health’s community service department and has an Exercise Physiology degree with 10 year’s experience in the industry and her interests include falls prevention and increasing independence.

Mrs White moved back to the country from Melbourne to be with her partner Jake and together they chose Euroa to be their new home.

She is enjoying living close to work without the city commute and being in a wonderful community environment.

Rent relief for small business

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE government has introduced new regulations under the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme to support small and family businesses experiencing financial hardship due to the latest wave of the pandemic.

Eligible commercial tenants with an annual turnover of $10 million or less who have suffered a decline in turnover of at least 30 per cent due to COVID-19 will be able to access the scheme.

Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce treasurer Pam Kiessling said “any help to businesses doing it tough is really welcome although the 40 per cent fall in turnover test is go-

ing to be difficult to meet when businesses have done their best to stay open or partially open during January”.

“The timing of the announcement is after the fact, if businesses knew this assistance was available they may have changed strategy during January and put themselves through a lot less stress,” she said.

“For business owners January was a very stressful month as they asked themselves many questions such as ‘should I open?’, ‘will I be putting my staff at risk?’, ‘if I don’t open how will I make rent and payroll?’, ‘what happens to my business if I, the owner, gets COVID-19 as customers are depending on me to be open?’, ‘where can I find a

rapid antigen test?’, or ‘when is my next delivery of stock coming?’.”

Mrs Kiessling said these were all common questions, business owners are facing every day and it is draining emotionally and physically.

“The rent relief although welcome does not go far enough to support our business owners,” she said.

The new regulations operate from January 16 until March 15.

Commercial tenants need to demonstrate their decline in turnover by comparing January 2022 to January 2020.

Landlords will be required to provide proportional rent relief to their commercial tenants in line with the reduction

in turnover.

For example, a business with a turnover of 40 per cent of prepandemic levels could only be charged 40 per cent of its rent.

Of the balance, at least half the rent must be waived, with the remainder to be deferred.

The freeze on rent increases will continue.

The majority of landlords and tenants will negotiate in good faith to reach agreement.

The Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) will continue to provide information and free mediation to tenants and landlords.

Walters bus service turn 70

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL FOUNDED in 1952, Walters bus service is celebrating its 70 years anniversary.

Ran by Sue and Wayne Walters, the iconic bus service has been a constant in the region for local students and other commuters.

The Walters family serviced Euroa for 65 years before their

base an hour north to Kyabram in 2017.

Sue Walters said she was over the moon with this milestone.

“We are extremely proud to have reached 70 years - not many businesses these days go into the third generation,” she said.

“There was a lot of hard work for Neville and Lorraine for many years before we took the job on.”

This journey has not always

been easy.

“It was a big step for us to sell our Euroa business back in 2017 as we were both born and bred in Euroa and then for Lorraine and Neville to make the move to Kyabram halfway through 2018 was an even bigger step for them at their age but they were closer to their immediate family and have made many new friends in Kyabram,” Mrs Walters said.

“The main reason we made the shift to Kyabram was because our business over there even though it was still a substantial size business it was easier to run than the Euroa side of our business going into our later years of our lives.

“We still have 25 buses to run in Kyabram which we had been running alongside Euroa, 40 vehicles in total at this time.”

Local musician’s ‘Chance to Grow’ in iTunes chart

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL DANIEL Reeves is a musical rising star, as his song Chance to Grow featuring Ally Eley has hit number two on the iTunes country music chart last week.

“I feel incredibly blessed of the support I’ve received with my new single Chance to Grow featuring Ally Eley,” he said.

“To debut on the iTunes Country Music chart at #2 was something very special for me and I have the utmost appreciation for my family, friends and fans who helped me achieve this.”

Mr Reeves grew up in Violet Town and started taking guitar lessons as a teenager with Andrew Guerin which then led him to song writing.

CONDRATS: Daniel Reeves’ song Chance to Grow featuring Ally Eley has hit number two on the iTunes country music chart.

“Andie gave me great guidance not only as a guitarist but also as a musician and he still inspires me to this day,” Mr Reeves said.

Even if he now is based in Melbourne, Mr Reeves is really a

country man at heart.

“I’m based in Melbourne these days though prior to the pandemic my touring schedule was largely focussed on regional areas,” he said.

“I draw so much inspiration from being on the road and the experiences it provides.”

Music is for him the most important thing in life, and he describes his as “a blend of country rock and alternative country”.

“Music has always been a predominant part of my life, growing up I listened to a healthy mix of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Dire Straits.

“Although these groups started me on my musical journey because of their great songs I soon

realised it was very much about the feelings the music invokes in you.

“Music for me wasn’t just music, it was so much more than that.”

The young musician thanked Annette Walton, youth development officer at Strathbogie Shire Council for playing a role in his growing success.

Mrs Walton gave him his first outdoor performance opportunity at the March Arts Festival in Violet Town.

“That was a real turning point not only for me but many local musicians,” Mr Reeves said.

“From that moment there really was no turning back.”

“Music is so much more than a stage and bright lights,” he said.

Works to begin on Nagambie Foreshore Walk next month Council has awarded the tender for construction of the Nagambie Foreshore Walk pathway at its recent Extraordinary Council Meeting to Shepparton-based company Gradian Projects. Work on the pathway is expected to start in March.

The $3.8 million pathway – which stretches for 1.6km along the southern edge of Lake Nagambie – will provide a safe and accessible pedestrian link between the Nagambie Regatta Centre and the Nagambie township.

The project is made possible by a $3 million Victorian Government Regional Development Victoria Grant, along with $350,000 Federal Government grant provided in May 2019, $250,000 from Strathbogie Shire Council and $200,000 provided

by Nagambie businesses.

Euroa Garden Club sprouts into 2022 AFTER the last two years of missed meetings due to the COVID-19 lockdowns the Euroa Garden Club is back for 2022.

The first meeting for the year will be an autumn, outdoor get together in the Charles Kemp Memorial Park on Friday March 18 at 10am.

This will be an informal meeting to share ideas and plans for the new year.

The time capsule which was dug up at the end of 2021 from the Euroa Museum Garden after 25 years, will be opened and the contents displayed for members to remember times past.

Members are asked to bring their chair and their own morning tea.

COVID-19 restrictions will prevent sharing of food just yet but hopes are high that the future meetings will return to the enjoyable afternoons which have always been such an important feature of the garden club.

Streamlining delivery of homes, jobs

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE State Government is providing new grants to local councils that will speed up the delivery of residential land by driving urban growth, jobs and development.

The Streamlining for Growth program is allocating more than $3.2 million to local councils facing population growth pressures or land shortages.

Funding allocation for Strathbogie will be directed to Industrial Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) for Nagambie and $105,751 will

be allocated.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said “Strathbogie Shire Council received $105,751 as part of the Victorian Government’s recent round of funding from the Streamlining for Growth Program (SfG Program)”.

“The SfG Program was established in 2016 and aims to facilitate faster, and more cost effective, permit-ready delivery of employment and residential land across Victoria,” Cr Binks said.

“Council’s funding allocation will be used to establish an employment Precinct

Structure Plan (PSP) for Nagambie.

“A PSP is a land use and infrastructure plan to guide the development of the area over time.

“The employment PSP for Nagambie will set out the intended future land uses, infrastructure and built form outcomes to be reflected by future development applications.

“We know that Nagambie continues to be an area of growth and this will ensure we have solid guidelines moving forward when it comes to applications put to council.”

This year, the program was focused on projects that will support Victoria’s economic recovery and address land supply shortages in regional Victoria and Melbourne’s growth areas.

Councils in regional Victoria will receive $2.18 million from this round of funding with 17 rural and regional councils receiving grants.

Colac Otway Shire will receive support to prepare a development plan for Deans Creek that will help meet Colac’s population growth target.

The plan will facilitate

rezoning to create new residential zoned land and subdivisions.

The program will also support Golden Plains Shire Council to provide a clear direction for growth in the municipality for the next 15 years.

The project will unlock 7000 housing lots for a projected new community of 21,000 people in this region, that lies between the two rapidly growing regional cities of Geelong and Ballarat.

Mansfield Shire Council will also receive funding to implement the Mansfield

Commercial and Industrial Land Use Strategy.

This will unlock employment investment and address an industrial land shortage in this key region whose local economy is still recovering from the 2019-20 bushfires.

The government has confirmed funding for a seventh year of Streamlining for Growth in 2022-23.

Applications for the next round of grants will open later in 2022.

Locals react to Ballarat school banning the mullet on schoolground

“Business in the front, party in the back” is the motto of those who love this hairstyle.

But not everyone believes mullets should be worn everywhere, as a Victorian high school in Ballarat has proved, and is now under fire for trying to outlaw the mullet on school grounds.

Local parents and community members reacted to this news, with a vast majority of them saying a child’s haircut is no one’s business.

Local hairdresser from SKM in Euroa Sheridan Marchenko said her son Kaiden Carson had a beautiful mullet.

“He is in year two at Euroa Primary School this year, and his mullet has never been cut ever and he is super attached to is there is no way school would convince him to cut it off and I would never let that happen either,” she said.

Cathie Costantinides said it was “only a hair cut”.

“It is pretty silly people objecting, let kids be individuals,” she said.

Tania Hodges said she didn’t see how a haircut could impact on a boy’s ability to learn.

Kylie Bourke said she’s agreed, “As long as it’s not in their eyes it shouldn’t matter”.

Same for Rhonda Levy, who said “How kids wear their hair is no one’s business”.

Samantha Raewynn shared her advice.

“Kids should be allowed to express themselves, it’s only a haircut,” she said.

Sandra Barns said this interdiction would probably have the counter effect of the one expected.

“I bet this will increase the mullet growth,” she said.

Margaret Andersson said she “personally can’t stand mullets”.

“I believe that schools should be able to set their own standards in terms of their dress code,” she said.

Maddie Caulfield also agreed and said that forbidding the mullet was logic in order to conform to a certain code, “like we all do with our own workplaces and when attending certain venues”.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE government has partnered with Crime Stoppers Australia for this year’s National Illicit Firearms Campaign, keeping Australians safe by removing illegal guns from the community.

“More than 11,000 fire arms detained illegally were surrendered nationally during the first stage of the amnesty which took place from July through to now”, Lexie Jeuniewic, media liaison coordinator at Crime Stoppers said.

“It is exceptional news during COVID-19.”

During the three-month campaign, a range of community engagement and promotional events in regional and metropolitan communities across Australia will encourage people to share what they know about illegal guns, and to safely surrender any they may have in their possession.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the Morrison Government was committed to keeping Australians safe by stamping out gun violence in our communities.

“Illegal guns are more likely to be used in crime, more likely to be defective or insecurely

stored, and more likely to be involved in accidents,” Minister Andrews said.

“There is no excuse, indeed no legitimate reason, for anyone in Australia to have an illicit firearm.

“Our message today is simple, if you have an illicit firearm, do the right thing, do the right thing by your friends, family, and community.

“Do the right thing by yourself hand it in.

“If you surrender it, you can do so without penalty.

“The alternative is a knock on your door from the police and the potential for serious criminal penalties, including imprisonment.”

Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs Jason Wood said the campaign will target illegal gun owners by encouraging families, friends and anybody else who may have information to speak up and share what they know with Crime Stoppers before it’s too late.

“You may think you know a person well, but owners of illegal guns have not been subject to background checks and may not be on the radar of police,” Mr Wood said.

“This year’s National Illegal

Firearms Campaign is part of an increased push to encourage owners of illegal, unregistered and unwanted firearms, parts and accessories to hand them in to be registered or destroyed.

“With over 260,000 unregistered guns estimated to be in circulation in Australia, it is important for the community to step up and share information they know or suspect about an illegal gun.

“In the criminal underworld, the weapon of choice is an illegal firearm. In many cases, criminal gangs will target individuals who have illegal firearms to gain access to weapons.”

Crime Stoppers Australia Chair, Dr Vince Hughes, said all Australians should consider how they would feel if they had information about an illegal gun which was then used to harm or kill someone.

“Criminals often go to great lengths to obtain a firearm illegally and then conceal it from authorities, and it’s unlikely they would go to that effort unless they are prepared to use it,” Dr Hughes said.

“With the Commonwealth Government, police services across the country and Crime Stoppers working together on this campaign, you need to sur-

render that gun now or risk being reported by someone who has information about you.

“Australia is certainly not immune from the devastating impacts that come with having illegal firearms in the hands of criminals.

“We have seen the tragic loss of life and severe injuries that occur when people turn a blind eye and allow illegal firearms to remain in the community.

“The demand for illegal firearms is driven by organised crime groups right through to low level individual criminals, who want and use firearms to protect their interests and to commit violent acts.”

Dr Hughes said if you suspect that someone has an illegal gun, share what you know with Crime Stoppers before it is too late.

There is so much to see at Emerald Bank, members enjoyed the outing immensely.

MOVE is the home of trucks, cars, motorcycles, and vintage bicycles all dating back many years, the Furphy museum and collectibles plus a few hidden treasures.

A SPECIAL cattle sale occurred at Euroa Saleyard and about 100 farmers came to sell and buy livestock.

Independent MP for Indi Helen Haines also came to assist this auction.

Richard McGeehan, cattle farmer onsite that day, said that sale was one in a million.

“This February special sale once again saw an above average no of cattle presenting,” Mr McGeehan said.

“Reason being prices have remained historically high due to factors such as nationwide rains because of La Nina, and also because low dollar and continued export demand for northern cattle.”

Bush Gatherings welcome new artist

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL BUSH gatherings is proud to present its next exhibition by Serana Hunt-Hughes that merges drawing and photography, past and present works.

Her new work explores the crossover between the spiritual and physical worlds.

“Crossover is an important expression to me because for the first time, I am openly presenting works that bridge my physical and spiritual worlds,” Mrs Hunt-Hughes said.

“There are three series of works within this show, ‘Bringing Horses Home’ ‘Portraits of a Vision’ and ‘Desert Storm’.

“Works from the series ‘Bringing Horses Home’ are photographs taken along the way of everyday life that hold for me a spiritual essence and expression. “’Desert Storm’ are drawings that have been hidden away for many years and seeing them in this show inspires me to start drawing again.

“They were born from witnessing some magnificent Storms while working on Newhaven Station on the edge of the Tanami desert as a young woman.

“Hearing the wild horses call out to each other as the Storms rumbled in inspired the drawings and words displayed.

“They are an echo of the past as Newhaven Station is now a bird sanctuary and the wild horses are no longer a part of that environment.

“The other series of works in this exhibition, ‘Portraits of a Vision’ are photographic montages that

Mrs Hunt-Hughes is a wellknown photographer around the Shepparton and Dookie areas.

Mrs Hunt-Hughes continues her professional photography career from Violet Town and now also

works at the Jackson’s Produce Store Café in Violet Town.

Her creative work has been represented with previous exhibitions including two solo exhibitions at the Shepparton Art Museum, 2009, 2015 and solo exhibitions selected for the International HeadOn Photo Festival held in Sydney in 2012 and 2015.

Her work has also been selected as a finalist in coveted prizes such as the Olive Cotton Award and the Moran Contemporary Photography Prize.

Mrs Hunt-Hughes current exhibition, Crossover, held at Bush Gatherings Gallery, 208 High Street, Violet Town, expands the diversity of her practice to include drawings and photographic montage.

Bringing to live personal visions and dreams through ethereal photographic montages and drawings.

She is also a Medicine Woman of the Native American Tradition, having worked closely with EagleHeart, a Native American Shaman and creative practitioner based in Melbourne for several years.

Crossover expands Mrs HuntHughes’ creative work to include the expression this aspect of her life.

The artist herself will be at Bush Gatherings this Sunday for an artist’s talk at 11.30am where she will be sharing the story of the works and how they came to be.

The exhibition will be open until February 28 at 208 High Street, Violet Town.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL EUROA and Longwood community action groups met last week at the Seven Creeks Hotel to discuss ideas for both towns into the future.

Some 18 attendees were onsite with representation from Rotary, the Euroa Chamber of business and Commerce, Violet Town Arts Music and Performance Collective (VAMP), Clean up Euroa and others.

Many topics were discussed by the groups.

“We covered a lot of topics including sculpture and mural trail we are kicking off with other local groups, we bounced around some ideas for reducing litter in town, heard some exciting news about funding for the community garden, got an update from Community Learning Euroa and just had a good time catching up,” president of ECAG, Laura Baker said.

“It was awesome to have Steve Tobin and President Will Dwyer from Longwood Action Group at the meeting sharing their initiatives and how we can collaborate.”

UNITED FRONT: At Seven Creeks Hotel, Euroa and Longwood community action groups met together and raised many subjects and new ideas.

Steve Tobin, from the LCAG, emphasised on the importance of artistic creation in our communities, such as the art and sculpture trail initiative.

ECAG’s vice president, Loretta York updated attendees with news and info regarding the Community Garden pro-

ject, and said the next meeting would be held at Euroa Butter Factory, where owners Jill and Bernard Hayes would show their veggie garden to give and get inspiration for the community one.

“Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 28 and will be hosted by Jillian and Bernard Hayes at the Butter Factory and they are going to show us around their vegetable garden and inspire our community garden initiative,” Mrs York said.

District News Longwood Lookout THE first meeting of the year for the Longwood Action Group was held Wednesday, February 2 at 7pm at the Longwood Primary School.

Minutes are available for anyone who may be interested or come along to the meetings.

Among items discussed were the calendar for 2023, art trail streetscape program and this year’s Anzac Day service.

With Euroa’s February sale of only 700 cattle we saw numbers declining, we were a little nervous when the Wangaratta sale clashed against our set sale, but we were soon to realise it was business as usual.

The sale was quoted by some to be a little softer, but when asked do you buy, the response was it was too dear for me.

Let’s hope it’s the new norm.

Sun shines brightly on the Australian agriculture forecast AUSTRALIA’S agricultural sector is set for another profitable year ahead, with the gross value of agricultural production on track for a fourth consecutive year of growth in 2021/22, Rabobank says in a newly-released industry report.

In its flagship annual Australian Agribusiness Outlook for 2022, titled “Making Hay While the Sun Shines”, the specialist global agribusiness bank says a stellar 2021 represented a continued recovery from the crippling 2017-2019 drought and had positioned Australian agriculture for a strong year ahead.

The report says with Australian agriculture positioned

for another positive year ahead, it presents an ideal opportunity for the sector to prepare for future times when “the sun is not shining so brightly in its favour”.

This includes preparing for an increase in margin pressures when global prices decline and Australian farm returns come under pressure, diversifying markets and trading relationships, and equipping farm businesses for future droughts and climate change.

More importantly, it means the industry can prepare for the time when the sun is not shining so brightly in its favour.

Local macro-economic settings also remain supportive for Australian agriculture as the Australian dollar is expected to only gain a little over the year and remain near its five-year average.

The report states 2021 had been a “once in a blue moon” year for Australia’s agricultural sector, with very strong prices resulting from “hardship globally”, and with the high pricing coinciding with “favourable to very favourable Australian production conditions again”.

Help protect our waterways from noxious weeds AGRICULTURE Victoria has launched an advertising campaign targeting the online sale of water hyacinth and salvinia, two of Victoria’s highest priority aquatic noxious weeds.

The two-month long campaign will raise awareness of the impact these weeds have on waterways and encourage reporting of detections so that Agriculture Victoria can remove infestations to prevent further spread and impacts to water quality and use.

Agriculture Victoria’s biosecurity manager Angela Constantine said the sale of these aquatic state prohibited weeds creates the potential for them to spread throughout Victoria, which could have

economic and environmental impacts on a large scale.”

These weeds may look attractive, but they quickly spread to cover and block waterways, which harms native plants and wildlife and reduces water quality for farming and recreation,” Ms Constantine said.

“Water hyacinth and salvinia are primarily spread by people buying and selling them as pretty water plants for ornamental ponds, dams and aquariums.

“It is illegal to buy, sell or give away water hyacinth or salvinia in Victoria, however in most cases home gardeners are unaware of potential harmful impacts of these

weeds and are unknowingly growing it.”

The Victorian Government takes responsibility for the safe treatment, removal and disposal of State prohibited weeds such as water hyacinth and salvinia, at no cost to the landowner.

“Agriculture Victoria wants to work with the community to help protect our waterways and protect Victoria from emerging weed incursions,” Ms Constantine said.

Valentine’s day is every day for the lovely people of Euroa

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL FEBRUARY 14 was the day of love, or so it was supposed to be, as it was internationally celebrated as Valentine’s Day, a day reserved for lovers.

But many locals said that this tradition was not that big in their home as they didn’t need to set a date to remember how much they were loved and loved in return.

Local Rebecca Threlfall said “To me, Valentine’s Day is just another day.”

“We show our love for each other every day of the year,” she said.

“We don’t need the pressures of a particular day for that.

“Why make loving someone stressful by having to conform to the rules set by society?”

Same for Steve Tobin who said “Every day is Valentine’s Day in our household.”

“I love my wife,” he said.

“Valentine’s Day is good for young fellas trying to get a bit of action.”

For Sonia Chapman, it is just a commercial day.

“Just another day that’s overly commercialised,” she said.

But she still prepared for her husband and herself a nice dinner.

“That’s enough, no lavish extravaganza, it’s overkill,” she said.

Anth Snepvangers said “My Mrs & myself look at Valentine’s this way, why spend so much money on crap you don’t need, to show your partner how much you love each other when we already know this”.

“We would rather spend our money on things we need,” he said.

Deborah Basel said she was not big on that tradition.

“I never celebrated Valentine’s Day when I was in a couple,” she said.

“I don’t need a bunch of overpriced roses to know that I am loved.

“A partner who loves you will show you that you are loved every day, cooks your favourite meal, will watch your favourite show with you, will put his arm around you, or briefly rub your shoulder.

“He asks about your day, he listens to you and he tells you.”

For others, it was an excuse to buy their other half a lovely present, or at least to pretend to buy it for someone else than themselves, like Simon Waters who said he bought “a fetching blue 36v 16 inch chainsaw” for his partner Liz, to which she responded she bought him pink slippers.

Have your say on four-bin kerbside collection STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is calling on the community to have its say on three potential rollout options for a new four-bin system, to be instated by 2025.

The new system, which will feature an additional 240-litre purple-lid bin for glass to all households with, or eligible for a kerbside service, to be collected monthly.

It comes after a Victorian Government requirement, as part of its Recycling Victoria 10-year policy and action plan, that all councils throughout the state move to a new four-bin system.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the community now has the

chance to vote on its preferred scenario from three proposed options.

“Council engaged a consultant to develop the three different options which all propose different costs, collection frequencies for different bins and waste diversion implications,” Cr Binks said.

“The introduction of the new purple-lid glass bin will mean the items you put in your yellow-lid recycling bin won’t be contaminated by broken glass.

“Not only that, but the new glass bin will reduce the amount of materials in your yellow recycling bin by 32 per cent.”

Cr Binks explained why contamination can happen in the

yellow recycling bins.

“When glass is mixed with other recyclable materials it can shatter and this contaminates valuable, easy-to-recycle materials such as paper and cardboard,” Cr Binks said.

Community members are invited to visit https://share. strathbogie.vic.gov.au/fourbin-kerbside-service to vote on their preferred option, read their FAQs document and watch a quick video explaining the transition to four bins.

Cr Binks said the new fourbin system will be up and running by 2025, when council’s current waste contract expires.

“The reason why we’re seeking feedback from our community so far out from the system

being put in place is due to the complexity of establishing waste contracts,” Cr Binks said.

“We want to give ourselves plenty of time to provide a seamless transition to the new contract so that we can reach the Victorian Government target of having a glass bin introduced no later than 2027, well ahead of time.”

Cr Binks encouraged community members to have their say via Share Strathbogie.

“We are eager to hear your thoughts on which scenario you prefer to ensure all community members are receiving the best possible waste service,” she said.

by CLE from the William Pearson Memorial Hall from March.

Local education and training not-for-profit association, Community Learning Euroa (CLE) launches its 2022 program in March.

Are you above school leaving age and wish to discover new career pathways, enter the workforce for the first time or improve your work/life skills?

If so, we offer a range of relevant programs, which are supported by professional mentors and coaches, and which are designed to allow you to explore real opportunities for the future.

Programs will be offered in Euroa, at the William Pearson Memorial Hall, Kirkland Avenue and will include both face-to-face and online learning, with the possibility of completing programs through remote online and blended delivery.

Several education and train-

ing programs will be available through valued partnerships for delivery in Euroa.

Community Learning Euroa and MACE Mansfield are partnering to deliver free pre-accredited training programs in Euroa, funded by the Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board.

Beginning on Wednesday, March 2, at William Pearson Memorial Hall, a five week ‘Leap into your future’ program will be offered which explores work options in the area, the strengths and interests you bring, and might develop, to pursue the work of your choice and the next steps you might take to achieve success.

The program will be delivered by experienced mentors and trainers, Craig Mercuri (GoTAFE) and Rob Woodward.

Mansfield Adult Continuing Education (MACE) is a provider of vocational education and training, early childhood education and care, and community development.

MACE has been a major community education provider in the North East region of Victo-

ria since 1975.

Their purpose is to enrich connection through community diversity, participation, and learning.

They provide training for young people, older adults, people returning to learning, the general community, people with a disability, workplaces and businesses.

Their training programs include nationally-accredited qualifications, pre-accredited programs, compliance training and a range of leisure and lifestyle programs.

You might also be interested in other ACFE programs being offered, including: Digital Essentials for Beginners; Digital Essentials (intermediate) and Ready 4 Work (preparing for and stepping into the job of your choice).

‘Pop Up’ Organ Recital at St Paul’s lifts spirits

A RECENT free ‘Pop Up’ organ recital was just what was needed to lift the spirits of locals.

On Sunday, January 30, Ria Angelika Polo (Associate organist of Scots’ Church, Melbourne) teacher of Yesie Lin Viota (Assistant organist at St Paul’s Euroa) both played and accompanied each other on the church organ.

Yesie (son of local, Vivian and William Webber) has been learning the piano since he was three and he then transferred that talent to playing the organ at 13.

Both played two pieces - Ria featured Edward Elgar and Eugene Gigout and Yesie chose pieces by Georg Böhm and Gaston Bélier.

These talented organists completed the program with two duets - Prelude and Fugue

ENTHRALLED AUDIENCE: Despite a late notice, a number of community members were thrilled to be a part of such a special occasion.

Despite the late notice of this event, there was a very pleasing turn-out and all in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The Euroa community is extremely lucky to have an organ of such high quality.

In 1959, Mr Edward Stribling provided an endowment in memory of his late wife, Adelaide, in the form of a Stephen Laurie Pipe Organ.

This is a beautiful threemanual instrument based on English toned pipes which has been classified by the National Trust.

Over the years the church has been very lucky to have the expertise of many talented organists and this now continues with Yesie providing organ music for the church hymns on Sunday.

Organ recitals, visiting choirs and orchestras, concerts by prominent city musicians, baroque groups and harpsichordists, have preformed at St Paul’s, giving a range of memorable music to look back on over the years.

It is hoped that this tradition can continue and that further special events may be planned very soon.

“I am just an amateur photographer and enjoy taking photos with drones,” Mr Robins said.

He started visiting Euroa as his wife comes from the town and they were married at a property in Strathbogie in 2018.

“The past few years I have been in Euroa on Christmas Day and the weather has been great to put the drone up and get some great shots,” Mr Robins said.

“I have posted these on the Euroa Community Noticeboard on Facebook and have had great feedback from the locals.

“Mount Wombat is also a favourite spot of mine with great views.”

Helen Haines visits RMIT exhibition

By PETER HILL LAST week independent MP for Indi, Helen Haines, attended a closing event at the North Eastern Hotel in Euroa.

On display was the work of a dozen RMIT Masters of Architecture students.

It showcased their tremendous imaginations with large-scale computer-generated visuals of how a new railway precinct constructed around the road-under-rail option would bring both sides of town together.

Vistas would open up.

The station would become an eye-watering place of opportunity rather than an eyesore.

Tourists would find it a welcoming point of arrival - the natural centre of town. There was a feeling of optimism in the air.

“I’ve just been to the cattleyards,” Dr Haines said the large group gathered in the hotel’s former Ladies’ Lounge.

“And hearing the optimism in everyone’s voices there after what has been the greatest spring and summer for our farmers and growers, when I come

“And I love the way that you people of Euroa and Strathbogie have shown us how you can imagine your future, you absolutely can.

Dr Haines said what impressed her so much is the persistence and perseverance with which lo-

cals convey their vision of what Euroa can be to those people up on the hill in Canberra where she works.

“And when I bang the drum in Canberra on your behalf I say ‘it’s not about us without us’,” she said.

“And the group that has pushed this more than any other is called Euroa Connect.

“It’s so well-named.

It’s about connecting the town as Finbar has just told us so eloquently.

“And thank you Finbar for all the hard work you have put in personally to making this old girl - The Northey - look so spectacular for hosting the work of the RMIT Masters students.

“As a young girl I used to love coming into this Ladies Lounge, where we are just now, after the cattle sales.

“Grand old pubs like this have a special part in the heart of all rural Australians.”

Mixed bag of results leaves bowlers hoping for better luck next week IT has been a hard week at the Euroa Bowls Club for selectors to select teams to play in the weekend and midweek pennant teams, but they have been able to fulfil each division with eligible players.

Division one played at Tatura Hill Top and lost 78/107, division four played Seymour VRI at Euroa and lost 80/103 and division six defeated Stanhope at Euroa 71/66.

Cricketers trumped by Pine Lodge

By JACK WILSON Euroa 113 (P Anderson 34, D Grant 23) lost to Pine Lodge 8-114 (H Jackson 3-12, J Wilson 3-17) THE Euroa C Grade side welcomed Pine Lodge to the picturesque Memorial Oval on Saturday.

Captain Dion Grant lost the toss and Euroa were sent in to bat on a pitch that would favour bowlers.

Openers Grant and John Brodie got the team off to a cautious start before Brodie was bowled with the score at 1-13.

Paul Anderson came to the crease and along with Grant put the team into a comfortable position with a 58-run partnership before Grant was dismissed with the score at 2-71.

Henry Jackson and Anderson managed to get the 3rd wicket partnership to 10 before Anderson was dis-

missed with the score at 3-81 and Jackson soon followed Anderson back to the sheds 3 runs later. Rahis Baig and Nathan Butler contributed by making 18 runs between them including a big six by Baig.

Once Butler was dismissed unfortunately this started a middle and lower order collapse with the hosts losing 6-11. Pine Lodge needed 114 to win.

With 113 on the board, Euroa knew it was going to be hard to chase that total down on the Memorial Oval pitch.

Walter Jackson snared the first wicket with a great catch by Robbie Smith. Henry Jackson grabbed the next two in his 5th over to have Pine Lodge 3-22.

Nathan Butler came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over while Robbie Smith was creating great chances down the other end.

When Jack Wilson came

into the attack and snared a wicket in his first over to leave Pine Lodge at 5-45.

Kusuma Wolfenden and Greyson Kirk bowled with great accuracy down the Sevens Creek End of the ground while Wilson was creating chances down the town end and taking 2 wickets in his 4th over to put Euroa in a commanding position with 22 overs gone with Pine Lodge 7-62.

Henry Jackson came back into the attack to snare another wicket to leave Pine Lodge 8-88. But unfortunately, Pine Lodge made the runs with 15 balls to spare.

Euroa looks towards next week where the team plays Central Park/St. Brendan’s at Central Park (East Shepparton). Go Pies.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT AFTER a bye and a walk over, Avenel division five team were raring to go for its round 12 match in GMBR pennant season against Violet Town at home.

And they fell just short of beating third placed Violet Town 0 - 43 to 14 - 48.

Norm Billingsley, George Pedler, Glen Bell, Charlie Kemp (s) got off to a slow start but a five on end eight had them back in the game.

Winning seven ends in a row then had them five up.

However, Violet Town scored a five on end 21 to level the scores.

On the second last end the scores were even again with the visitors able to win the last end by one and the game by one, 23 - 24.

Marion Gittus, Ruth Underwood, Bill O’Connor, Graeme Toy were thirteen down on end 17 then came storming home to win six ends in a row to be only two down on end 23.

Violet Town dug deep to win the last two ends and the game by four, 24 - 20.

A terrific effort by Avenel that keep showing improvement every week.

The next game for division five is away against Seymour.

Division two played Tatura Hill Top away at Hill Top. The home team, with two from three winning rinks, won 14 - 77 to 2 - 73.

Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) lead from the get-go for a solid win, 31 - 17.

Fay Hateley, Nyoli Bell, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) started strongly but Tatura Hill Top caught them on end 13 and were four shots up at the break.

A margin that Avenel tried to chase down but without success.

Tatura Hill Top winning 26 - 22.

Dennis McGregor, Rob Kemp, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) found it difficult to get back into the game after losing the five first ends. Tatura Hill Top kept the pressure on to take the win 34 -20.

The next game for division two is at home against Stanhope.

WEEKEND PENNANT In division six South, Avenel played Eildon two at home.

One rink had success, with the other two rinks going down to the visitors 2 - 58 to 14 - 84.

Kyle Pedder, Mary Black, Norm Billingsley, Charlie Kemp (s) nutted out a fourshot win after leading at every end change except ends 11 and end 19 when Eildon drew even.

The Avenel rink fought to the end for a well-deserved 25 - 21 victory.

Robyn Hyland, Mitch Thomas, Roy Cooper, George Pedler (s) was very competitive for nineteen ends being only one shot down on the nineteenth end.

Eildon then found the gas pedal and scored twelve

shots to two to win the game 27 - 16.

Mike Dibben, Joyce White, Graham Lewis, Graeme Toy (s) drew the second half 12 all, but Eildon had set up the win in the first half being 19 shots up at smoko which gave them a convincing win, 36 - 17.

Congratulations to Mike Dibben on his first game of pennant bowls.

The next game for division six south is against Eildon one at home.

In division three, Seymour was too good for Avenel winning 16 -110 to 2 - 82.

Ruth King, Rob Kemp, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) only had the lead on one end for the entire game. Fortunately, that end was the last end when they secured a win from behind with a five on the last end for a four-shot win, 26 - 22.

A great birthday present for skip Furletti.

Donna Rowley, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley, Noel Slater (s) were hot on the heels of Seymour for most of the game, but just could not catch them to go down by five shots 22 - 27.

Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) after being in front for the first half had a handy five shot lead on end 15 only to lose nine of the last ten ends and the game 15 - 26.

Marion Gittus, Kate Donovan, Dennis McGregor, Brett McDonald (s) was two down at the break, but in the second half, Seymour took their game to the next level outscoring Avenel 21 - 7 for a strong win 35 - 19.

The next game for division three in away against Shepparton Golf.

Club games are in full swing with the mixed pairs down to the final two.

EUROA BOWLS CLUB Margaritha Cerini lady champion As for many years the midweek bowls was always the ladies pennant day, but the last couple of years the name has changed to midweek and the men bowlers can now play.

However, it still remains up to the clubs to conduct championships.

Last Sunday Margaritha Cerini and Charmaine Reid played in an interesting match to determine the champion of the Euroa bowls Club.

Margaritha won 25/7 defeating Charmaine, who is a very competitive bowler within the club.

The field consisted of 29 men and two women hitting off in pleasant and favourable weather conditions although the Nagambie wind was present throughout the round the course was still offering plenty of run for high handicappers to take advantage of.

Driving his hotted up convertible golf cart was Terry Wallis finishing second with 41 point total, a winning score for most weeks of the year, top three went to Jeremy Ezard shooting 38 points.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Irene Keogh blazing one to the third, Karen Thompson putting it close for the girls on the eighth, Barry “Bageye’ Cryer with his eye in also on the eighth and Peter Lawrence zeroing in on the 16th.

Next week’s golf will see a change to the printed Syllabus, with the Gary Bow sponsored foursome being moved forward to this coming week, a partner is required and the event is open to both men and women golfers.

On office duty will be D. Love and in the bar H. Lawrence.

The Nagambie Golf club would like to pass on their condolences to Sandra, Mark and family on the passing of Sandra’s father Bruce Forbes, who was a life member of the golf club.

He was not only a long time member but also was an instigator of improvements to the golf club and course.

A GROUP of 13 players turned up for a round of Par on Wednesday, February 9.

The day started off with a little bit of rain but it didn’t last long and went on to be perfect conditions. Moz Fowler was the winner of A & B Grade also winning the Monthly Medal, with +3.

The winner of C Grade was Karyn Thompson with + 2.

18 hole Balls went to Moz, Karyn and Jane Bow with +1.

9 hole Balls went to Carol Wallis +5, Karyn +4 and Jane +3.

N/P on 8th was Moz and 13th Irene Keogh.

Chicken Run Results February 10 25 players played a game of Stableford on the back nine.

The winner was Mick O’Connell on a C/B from Carol Wallis.

N/P on 13th Shaun Spicer and on 16th Shayne Kimball.

We also have to say goodbye to one of our supportive ladies member, Jo Goodacre.

Jo and her husband are moving to be closer to family in NSW. The club wishes them all the best and goodbye.

THE Captain’s Trophy has finally been decided after two countbacks were required to separate John Kelly, the eventual winner from Jeff Moran who both finished on 217.

John has only recently joined in the regular competition fields and looks to be on his way to lowering his handicap.

Ladies Wednesday golf saw Freda Edwards with 37 points the best of the 17 players competing.

Ann Hill took out division two with 36.

Ball winners were the Evergreen May Hamilton, Robyn Lied and Sarah Bullen.

May also collected a Nearest to Pin as did Maudie Ingram and Kae Lummas.

Drive and Pitches went to Ros Doxey and Freda Edwards.

For the men, Gaz Ritchie showed what a difference a week can make.

Having finished a distant last on Saturday, so far back he couldn’t see the field in the Nolan Trophy, he turned it around with a spectacular form reversal to win on Wednesday with 37 points.

The first time he had bettered his handicap since 27 November last year.

Runners Up on countback were the, in form Dick Farmer and Pete Ellis.

Farmer and Corradin shared the two ball payout.

Nearest the Pins were Lucas Paul and Peter McMahon.

Richard Eddy with 19 points and the Nearest the Pin on 18 cleaned up in a field of 20 players in the Friday Twilight Competition.

Richard unfortunately was left behind the previous week when the field started the Keith Seeber Trophy event.

Mick Keely came in second and has finally come to the notice of the handicapper.

Saturday ladies field saw Mandy Edwards dominate the field of 22 players taking the monthly medal with a net 68.

She also won the Drive and Pitch on 11.

Melissa Eddy and Justine Collins both carded 71s, while Jean Duff and Michelle Grod, were one shot back with 72.

Sarah Bullen took out the putting prize.

Saturday saw the Drummond Golf Monthly Medal and second round of the Nolan Trophy won by Paul Jones with a cracking 87 (22) net 65.

Vice Captain Ross Wishart with one of his best ever rounds of 78 (12) 66 must surely have thought the medal was his.

Nearest the Pins went to Richard Eddy on five.

Scott Meehan got 13, Matt Mills was Nearest the Pins on 12 and got the Drive and Pitch on seven.

Paddy McCarthy also had a double with Nearest the Pin on eight and Drive and Pitch on 16, while Brendan Redfern Nearest the Pin on 18 and Drive and Pitch on 16.

Brendan Redfern who took a four shot lead into the second round of the Nolan Trophy, also had another great round with a net 69 to now be on top of the leaderboard with 136.

Ross Wishart is only two back on 138 from Mick Anderson on 142, then comes Paul Jones on 143 from Mick Keely.

Several players sit around 146 and probably too far back to feature.

It will be interesting to see how the pressure of Clubhouse Leader for two weeks affects Redfern with Wishart close on his heels.

In the Ladies Summer Cup Competitions over three rounds, Mandy Edwards cleaned up the day’s event to narrow the gap to Justine Collins who still holds a narrow lead heading into the final round.

The Autumn Tournament is being held from 12-14 March, with Mens and Ladies Scratch and handicap on Saturday, sponsored by Euroa Health Save Pharmacy.

Cricketers secure spot in the finals

By TOMAS FOGARTY Results: Euroa 6/99 (C Paul 24* retired, A Murray 20* retired, N Butler 17) defeated Old Students Blue 7/77 (Mitch Walters 3/12, C Paul 1/3) ON a perfect morning for cricket Euroa hosted Old Students Blue at the Friendlies.

After last week’s first loss for the year it was important for the boys to wrestle back the winning momentum and what better way to be tested than against another finals contender.

Euroa lost the toss and had to be content with bowling first in the dewy conditions.

They started well with opening bowler Mitch Walters (3/12) breaking through with the second ball of the day.

With Darby Wilson missing through injury, the bowling line-up had to be tweaked yet again.

All bowlers bowled good line and length with the wickets and runs spread evenly throughout.

They were well backed up in the field with some sharp work in close and on the boundary and this went a long way to restricting Old Students Blue to 2/35 after 10 overs.

The good form with the ball continued for the balance of the overs with consistent wickets falling to

WITH one round to go, division one has Strathbogie on top followed by two Euroa teams being Jake Hills St Pauls and Chris Ellis’s Gooram rounded off with Terip Terip.

Longwood and Benalla Lawn can still make finals but need a big win over St Pauls and Moglonemby respectively.

If Strathbogie loses to Avenel Red and Longwood beats Gooram , the final four will open up.

St Pauls steamrolled into finals contention with a huge win over Benalla Lawn with the men of Jake Hill, Scott Watson and Scott Meehan doing most of the damage being 19 games up on the day.

St Pauls cruised to a 29game win.

Moglonemby played Terip with a close start in a tie breaker with Keighan Hicks and Michael Nolan and the ladies led by Sue Vaughan just going down.

Terip was just too consistent as they have been all season and won by 13.

Gooram played Euroa Lawn and got their mojo back with a 25-game win with eight out of nine sets.

Euroa’s batting innings started very well with Mitch Walters (10* retired) and Walter Jackson (4* retired) setting a solid foundation for the rest of the team.

The boys were behind in the run rate but with all wickets still intact there was no sense of panic. Quick singles to rotate the strike, hard running to turn two’s into three’s and some lusty hitting suddenly had Euroa in the box seat and cruising to victory.

Euroa passed the target with only two wickets down and four overs to spare, going on to bat out the overs and finish on 6/99 off their 20 overs.

This win secured a spot in the finals and next week

Euroa travels to Mooroopna for the last home and away match of the season.

This will be an opportunity for the boys to keep the momentum going and fine tune some aspects of their game in readiness for the first week of the finals.

With captain Chris Ellis leading the charge being up 13 games and Dav Mackrell hitting form with Senura Kodikara and Jack Vecht.

Euroa’s captain Row Ellis along with Melinda Creevey managed to save the day with an 8-2 win over Julie Harrington and Kim Flack.

Brent Moore’s Longwood Lawn team were in the hunt all day with Leanne Armstrong and Molly Redfern starting strongly with an 8-5 and then the father son Redfern combination of Bede and Brendan won 8-2.

Brent fought back with Brendan with a stylish 8-3 but with Brent and Leanne being the only mixed win for Longwood, they found themselves tied at 54 games all but Avenel had more set.

In division B, a bit of history was in the making at Euroa with Craig Durkin leading his team for their first win of the season over Benalla Gardens Royal by 4 games.

Jacob Tarran and John Anderson set the scene early with an 8-0 and then Jacob followed up with Craig with an 8-1 and the whole team came home to win all three mixed sets with Jacob Tarran being best on the day with 19 games up.

By ROB BROWNLEE AGAIN a great field took on the course on Tuesday February 8 and there was some excellent scores.

David Kennett who for some weeks has been playing some great golf had every reason to think he had the day won with 39 points; however it was not to be.

Alan Rowath playing with a borrowed driver from Brian Smith blitzed the field with 43 points.

If he’d played like this three days earlier for the monthly medal he would have returned a 65 nett.

It is thought the driver will not be returned any day soon.

A lineball was won by Kerry Hewlett, nearest the pins on the 4th, 8th and 15th were retained by the club, Mavis Brierley won the 17th.

On Saturday February 12 Stableford was played and another who has been consistently playing well was Eleanor Barn, who won the Ladies with 39 points.

Greg Roberts got lucky winning the men’s with 37 points.

by Kerry Hewlett with 37 points, Gayle Rafferty 36 points, and Jack McDonald also with 36 points.

Riding club show a major success

By ABBIE HANSEN ON the Saturday, February 5 the official Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria (HRACV) show was held at the Euroa Showgrounds.

This was the second consecutive year this was held at the show grounds.

Previously it has been held up at Ruffy recreational reserve in conjunction with Ruffy Adult Riding Club.

The show has been going annually for over seven years, and since 2019 we have been running the overall weekend Highpoint as the Courtney Horwood Memorial which is the winner of both days as well as having individual highpoints each day.

This year Ruffy will be running their ring at the rescheduled Euroa Ag show on March 5, the memorial will be the rider and horse combination with the most points that has ridden at both shows.

There were 46 riders at close of entries, with a few scratchings on the day.

The weather was perfect, the local girl guides ran the barbecue for lunch and Pete the coffee man was there all morning.

We also had our huge raffle drawn at lunch time with many local sponsors.

All proceeds from the raffle were donated to Tracey Lee Johnson for her daughter Chelsea.

Riders came from locally (local NERC) Benalla, GVEC, and as far as Albury.

Mandy Organ was the judge on the day, starting at 9.30am with all concluded and highpoint and judges choice awarded by 4pm.

It was a fun efficient day.

With major thanks to all local sponsors, without whom events like this could not go forward.

Fletcher Paul and Linc McKernan opened the bowling for the Euroa side and made run scoring hard.

For the Nagambie batters bowling a consistent off stump line with Linc finding the edge and handing Travis Stefanos his first of three catches for the day.

Jett trotter replaced McKernan and his extra pace ripped through the Nagambie top order finishing with figures of 5/22.

Nick Brodie also bowled accurately taking two wickets for 19 and leaving Nagambie at 8/83 after 30 overs.

Some late resistance kept Euroa out field for a further 6 overs before Linc McKernan found the edge and Scott Hamilton took a sharp catch at second slip.

Connor McCombe was able to take a wicket off in his only ball for the match handing Lachie Cooke an easy catch with Nagambie all out for 96.

Jack and Linc McKernan opened the batting and got Euroa off to a flying start

with positive running and impressive strike play seeing them put on 33 for the first wicket.

Jack being bowled brought Scott Hamilton to the crease and Linc and Scott made batting look easy, putting away and loose bowling moving the score on to 72 before McKernan was out lbw for 25.

This was the last wicket to fall with Fletcher Paul nine not out and Hamilton 31 not out, scoring boundaries easily passing the Nagambie score in 21st over a very impressive performance.

Next week Euroa will take on the top of the ladder northerners at the friendlies in Euroa.

EUROA CRICKET CLUB UNDER 14 Euroa 4/153 def Shepparton United 3/63

By MONIQUE ANTONIS THE under 14’s were back to their winning selves on Saturday with fours seeming to be the lucky numeral for most of the team, given the number of them that were hit throughout their innings.

Euroa opened the batting with Ollie Swain and Archie Wilson facing the Shepparton United bowlers. Unfortunately Ollie only made one run before an unlucky LBW, but Archie retired after hitting two fours and a six with a total of 20 runs from 20 balls.

Next up were Will Davey and Cale Robertson who both retired after making 13 (including two fours) and 18

(3 x 4’s) respectively.

Jack Walters also made three fours for a total of 19 runs from 18 balls before being bowled and Ollie Wilson hit a four during his time at bat, making 13 runs before being caught out not long after.

Ollie Robertson was up next and made three fours before being bowled, making 15 runs total.

Haimi Wolfenden made seven from five and Josh Mulder only got to face three balls before time was called and Euroa had set the score at 4/153 after 22 overs.

Archie and Ben Creevey opened the bowling for Euroa, each bowling two overs and giving Shepp United very little chance to score.

Leo Murphy bowled the first wicket and Will Davey took the second with Leila Creevey and Jack Walters having a go in between.

Angus Burton bowled two maiden overs and there were lots of dot balls, punctuated by a wide here and there with Shepp United getting the occasional run in.

Declan Antonis, Ollie and Cale Robertson had a bowl with the third and final wicket taken when it was caught by Cale with Ollie Wilson bowling.

Ben, Angus and Ollie W all had a third run, filling out the 25 overs to finish with Shepp United on 63.

Round 13 this Saturday is Euroa hosting Nagambie at the Friendlies at 8:15am, last game before the semifinals.

A grade cricketers look for better result next week

By MITCHELL WALTERS 12/2/22 A grade at Friendlies Euroa Euroa: 105 - R Hill 30, N Hill 22 Defeated by Nagambie: 150 - V Kirk 4/20, M Walters 2/29, F Ellis 1/10 ON a warm summer day, the Friendlies wicket and field looked fantastic, and played well for the whole of the game.

Nagambie won the toss and elected to bat.

The Euroa’s openers Fraser Ellis and Mitchell Walters got off to a great start with Walters getting an early wicket and Ellis bowling tight lines.

Euroa had Nagambie 1/30 at drinks.

After drinks Sham Dadallage and the captain Carl Norton both picked up one wicket each with some great bowling from both ends.

More fine bowling from the town end by Vaughan Kirk who got himself 4 wickets.

A great run out by Nic Hill with a direct hit, then the Euroa openers Ellis and Walters finished off by getting Nagambie’s last two batters out for 150.

Will Jackson and Lachie Hill opened the batting for Euroa who were shortly dismissed; Nagambie got early wickets which had Euroa 4/35 at drinks.

Bendigo Shooters take the Honours at Euroa

By JOHN KING SHOOTERS from Bendigo scooped the pool shooting at the Euroa Clay Target Club on Sunday February 13.

With the Victorian State Tower Double Rise Championship on offer, a strong contingent of visiting competitors entered the field.

Double Rise shooting targets thrown from a high tower is quite a difficult

event and a hot breeze helped the target become more elusive.

It was Tim Knight who showed the way with a competitive score of 33/40 with the nearest to him being Alexandra’s Geoff McClure on 29/40.

Then the second event being a more traditional type of clay target shooting was the Medley Championship which consists three visits, 25t Double Barrel, 25t Single

Barrel followed by 25t Point Score with all three scores being totalled to give a result.

Veteran Fred Heinze also from Bendigo shot a very good score of 123/125 to win this event by quite a margin.

NOW Festival, GoFish Nagambie combined for a great weekend TWO major events in Nagambie, the Nagambie On Water Festival and the Go Fish Nagambie event joined forces to produce a great weekend for anglers, campers and water festival patrons.

The 2022 Nagambie Go Fish competition was held over three days and anglers were out at 6am and returned at 4pm with their catch and fishy tales.

Many competed in the major fishing event and many camped in the Nagambie regatta grounds and nearby for the whole time.

The Nagambie on Water Festival (NOW) attracted a large crowd to their Saturday events.

Both GO Fish and the NOW festival events relocated to the Nagambie Regatta Centre and the new venue at 66 Loddings Lane seemed to cater for everyone.

The organisers felt that the change of venue and date provided greater space for the weekend and entertainment as well as being able to maintain a COVID 19 safe area.

One of the most popular events at the annual Festival was the Club2Hub Open Water 1.1km swim from 11am that replaced the Park2Pub swim.

The new race was held on a new course for competitors to swim a circuit loop from the Nagambie Sailing Club into the lake and return to the Now Festival Hub. Also a shorter 600 metre

event for newcomers to the race was available.

108 swimmers took to the waters of Lake Nagambie close to 11am in the brilliant warm sunshine. GV Crocs from Shepparton and NOW Festival swim organisers jointly conducted the swim this year.

Young 11 year old Nagambie girl Ayla Thompson, undertook her second year swim with enthusiasm spurred on by her grandparents Karyn and Allan Thompson.

Ayla completed the 600metre open water swim in just over 20 minutes.

Ayla said “I practised swimming in the lake from my Grandmother Karyn’s house to see if I could make it,” and make it she did.

She was encouraged at the end of her swim by fellow local swimmers Kirsty and Dale Phelan.

Her teacher from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary Gen Stewart was there to greet her at the finish line. Gen said “I am very proud of her swim as are her grans.”

Another local swim veteran who endured the 1.1km open water swim race for the 15th time was Don Wilson.

Don said “I am very happy to take part in the swim.

I am getting a little older, but I can still make the finish line. It was a bit different swimming on a different course, but it was still okay.”

Cooper Edwards was the fastest male swimmer finishing with a time of 15.40 minutes and Jacqui Steven-

son was the fastest female swimmer with 16.29 minutes.

Cooper Edwards was presented the Brian Gowty Memorial trophy by the Late Brian Gowty’s mother Fiona Gowty at the presentations.

Go Adventure water craft fun, the Costs Canoe Challenge, Lake Hole in One Golf shoot, and the Great Grape Stomp were some of the other activities held alongside the carnival on the Saturday.

Great prizes were up for grabs and live music and a fireworks display ended Saturday’s events.

Congratulations to organisers of both events for giving the locals and visitors a great weekend on Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn River.

Labour day tennis tournament booked to capacity

By MARK BORTHWICK ONE of the biggest and certainly most popular tennis tournaments in the country commences Saturday March 12 at the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club.

It takes over 40 volunteers to manage the event before we even think about the tennis itself.

In conjunction with the Friendlies committee, 10 temporary courts will be built next door on the oval which requires two months of green keeper work from Brendan Redfern and his team.

Then the kitchen must be managed, which is a huge job with Melissa Wallace (exJumping Jumbuck owner)

managing the food site for us.

Complying with Covid, food regulations and general risk management is a big task but in conjunction with Bob and Gayle Furphy along with the events team from the Shire, we are committed to a safe and compliant tournament.

This year we decided to

reward our regulars with an early bird link to entry which went wild with over 500 entries in the first two days.

We then opened to the public and booked out in 20 minutes struggling to meet the demand with 570 entries in total.

We do not believe any tournament other than the

AO can match the demand our local tournament has.

We know that the only limitation to this tournament is the willingness of volunteers and access to accommodation in the district; at this stage we have hit capacity.

It is a big thank you to council for finalising the sewerage for the club-

house in time and all the volunteers working with our team over the weekend.

This is a double vaxed event including spectators and we would love to see you for a snack/lunch or a drink from the bar whilst you can see some great tennis in our open section with $2000 in prize money.

Local girl plays first AFLW game with Western Bulldogs EUROA local Aurora Smith grew up playing football locally for the Euroa Magpies and was picked number 25 for the Western Bulldogs AFLW in July of 2021.

Aurora has been training with the Western Bulldogs AFLW side for since being drafted, but played her first official match for the team on Monday, February 14.

The Western Bulldogs describe her as “one of the biggest improvers in the 2021 NAB League Girls’ sea-

son”, and said she was “the most prolific wing in the competition for the Murray Bushrangers”.

Aurora’s best attributes include her speed, work rate and ability to cover ground with excellent endurance.

Aurora also claimed the 2021 Murray Bushrangers best and fairest award.

Aurora has a bright future ahead with the Western bulldogs and Euroa wishes her all the best for her rising AFLW career.

CONCENTRATED: Aurora was the “most prolific wing in the competition” during the 2021 Murray Bushrangers season.

BEST AND FAIREST: Aurora Smith was awarded the Murray Bushrangers best and fairest award in 2021.

Targa High Country Rally visits Euroa

By FRANK YORK ON Saturday February 12, the annual 2022 Targa High Country Rally visited the Strathbogie Shire, spending a good deal of Saturday in our very own town of Euroa.

With 150 competition cars entered in the annual rally, the town was abuzz with activity on Saturday as the rally crews parked their race cars in Binney Street whilst they took a well-earned lunch break.

Here in Australia, this Targa event dates to 1992.

A series has been created to allow tarmac rally drivers to compete on some of the best roads in Australia.

With the proper authority and support from all the appropriate regulatory agencies, the Targa Series includes tarmac rally events in Victoria’s High Country; Cairns in Far North Queensland and the longest and hardest tarmac rally in the world; in Tasmania.

Locally, the Targa kicked off at Mt Buller on Friday, with the first competitive stages running around Buller, Whitfield and the King Valley before returning to Mt Buller for the overnight halt.

150 cars started the event, comprising an amazing variety of classic, modern and fast cars.

There was a variety of cars, including lots of Lotus and Porsches, Maserati, and Mitsubishi’s plus everything from Alfa Romeo, Subaru WRX, BMW and even a Volvo 850 station wagon. It is not necessarily a rich person’s sport.

On Saturday the Targa came to town.

Starting at the Mt Buller Village in the morning, the crews competed on special stage sections from Mirimbah to Merton, where the crews left Meron to tackle the Merton-Euroa Road.

Next the crews tackled Harrys Creek Rd, heading towards Violet Town.

The first car started just after 12.16pm.

After reaching the northern end of Harrys Creek Rd, the Targa crews came to Euroa for a scheduled one hour lunch break.

The first cars arrived at about 1.00pm and began parking up along Binney Street.

Each crew competes against the clock, so the first cars were leaving Euroa while later crews were still arriving.

This ensured there was a constant buzz of activity in the main street from midday through to late-afternoon.

It was a perfect summer’s day in Euroa with blue skies and light winds as Euroa welcomed the rally crews.

Three hundred competitors plus their support crews and spectators converged on Euroa and for a moment, we were the centre of their uni-

verse.

The crews entered the shopping strip from the railway end of Binney Street and checked in to the Control Point before parking along our main street.

As the congregation of cars grew, they parked up across the entire street, from one end to the other, from kerb to kerb, presenting a spectacular view.

Binney Street was a hive of high-powered activity with cars of every description on view.

Lamborghini’s, Porsches, Lotus, Aston Martins, and even Mercedes and Toyota Corolla’s were present, offering the spectator crowd a unique opportunity to see the cars close, and even chat to the crews.

The Targa crews were delighted to have a break in Euroa as the morning of competition had been intense.

The weather was warming up too; so many crews took advantage of Binney Streets cafes and traders to buy a cold drink, or something to eat.

The spectator crowd also soaked up the atmosphere

and enjoyed seeing Binney Street full of activity.

As the crews departed Binney Street at their allotted one-minute intervals, refreshed and ready to tackle the afternoon’s stages (Harrys Creek Rd, and Galls Gap Rd in the reverse direction).

By the end of Saturdays stages, the Targa Rally was being led by Jeff Morton, a brain cancer survivor, with his Navigator Daymon Nicholi, driving their red Porsche 911 RS2.

They were having a terrific run, being fastest on all but one of Saturday’s stages.

Angus Kennard and Steve Glenny driving a Nissan R35 GT-R were in second place outright, some 1.14sec behind the fast red Porsche.

Trevor McLeod and Ian Wheeler finished the day in third place outright, also driving a Nissan R35 GT-R. It was a battle at the top of the leader board, with only 3.37sec separating the top three crews.

On Sunday, the Targa Rally restarted at Mt Buller and headed towards the Sawmill Settlement.

A 16km Stage would see

Following this opening Stage, they would tackle the 49km Eildon-Jamieson Rd Stage, heading towards Eildon.

An 11km blast along Skyline Road in Eildon, was followed by a return run along the same road before another run along the EildonJamieson Road.

All this would culminate in their final run up Mt Buller Road and back to the Resort for a gala finish late on Sunday afternoon.

The day was not without drama though, as there were several incidents.

The biggest incident involved crowd favourites Geoff Nichols and Ray Farrell driving the classic Mercedes Benz 450SE who crashed 28km into the Jamieson stage.

Both were taken to hospi-

tal as a result of the crash, and the stage was delayed and downgraded to a touring stage following the crash.

Jeff Morton and Daymon Nicoli driving their red Porsche RS2 continued to lead the event and would go on to break through for their first Targa victory.

Angus Kennard and Steve Glenny finished 2.24 seconds behind in their Nissan R35 GT-R. Third overall was the Mitsubishi Evo X crewed by Anthony Moss and Julie Hunter following an outstanding run.

This was a fabulous ‘post covid19’ event, and something that has been missed for the last couple of years.

These types of sporting events create excitement and inject funds into every local town they pass through.
