While Ms Saywell had originally planned to begin in October after returning from leave, she said she was then kept from doing so due to other commitments that came up, and she then began to reconsider her position in light of developments in the last few weeks, including this masthead’s reporting on the recent correspondence from Minister Horne.

The VEC has confirmed that because Ms Saywell was the only remaining eligible candidate from the 2020 election, a by-election must now be held for Seven Creeks Ward to fill the extraordinary vacancy, at a date to be decided by the electoral commissioner.

The VEC also confirmed a by-election is set to be held for Lake Nagambie Ward at a date to be decided by the electoral commissioner, following the resignation of Cr Dickinson last month.

A VEC spokesperson said if all councillors were to be stood

down or suspended, the VEC would still proceed with filling any extraordinary vacancies, but if all councillors were dismissed, this process would cease.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 2020, a by-election must be held within 100 days of an extraordinary vacancy occurring.

In her email to Ms Salomon on Thursday, Ms Saywell wrote she is a “fiercely passionate person, who has campaigned for innovative, bold, and brave solutions”.

“I was keen to be part of a high-functioning and progressive council,” she continued.

“Unfortunately, it is clear this is not possible at this time.

“I wish to congratulate the councillors who are doing their best to drive positive change and pursue good governance.

“I will continue to advocate for change to make our home and our shire an even better place.

Responding to this and other comments Cr Dickinson made about council to this masthead upon his resignation, Cr Binks said “the problem is as simple as some councillors continually failing to uphold the code of conduct and to

understand and follow good governance”.

Minister Horne cited concerns regarding poor governance and conduct when she appointed a second municipal monitor to the council in May, but specific incidents demonstrating these concerns have not yet been made public due to confidentiality.

Strathbogie Shire Council did not respond by deadline to a request for comment on this story.

By DARREN CHAITMAN B FOLLOWING another car crash on a dangerous stretch of Euroa-Mansfield Road, a change of speed limit from 100kph to 60kph will come into effect over the coming month, the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) has said.

On Melbourne Cup Day, two people – a female driver in her 40s and a male passenger in his 50s – were flown by air ambulance to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries after crashing a ute into a tree in Gooram, in almost exactly the same location as a fatal crash in August.

Gooram CFA captain Michael Stubbe first spoke to The Euroa Gazette in late June regarding the need to lower the speed limit from 100kph to 60kph on the winding 5km stretch of EuroaMansfield Road between Ridge Road and the Gooram Falls carpark, where there have been several car crashes this year.

The fatal crash in August came about a month after Mr Stubbe had warned the Gazette there would be more fatalities on this stretch of road.

Following that crash, representatives from CFA and Victoria Police met with DTP officials, who agreed to change the speed limit but did not share a specific timeframe for implementing the change, according to Mr Stubbe.

The DTP has now confirmed the speed limit will be changed to 60kph for this stretch and they anticipate new speed signs will be installed over the coming month.

But the crash on Melbourne Cup Day left Mr Stubbe feeling frustrated the speed limit had still not been changed after he met with DTP three months ago.

She said she had written to Minister for Road Safety Melissa Horne to ask why there had been no change yet.

“It’s really disappointing that we’re still seeing accidents happening in an area that has been highlighted to the government as an area that’s not safe by the CFA, the SES, local police and local members of parliament,” Ms Lovell said.

“The government need to actually deliver on the promises that they made.”

The proposal to change the speed limit was also supported

by Strathbogie Shire Council

and Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland.

“I am devastated that there has been another loss of life before these concerns were taken seriously by the minister, who has now told me the speed reduction has been processed and will be implemented as soon as possible,” Ms Cleeland said.

Last week, an 18-year-old Shepparton woman died after crashing on a different section of Euroa-Mansfield Road.

Mr Stubbe said changing the speed limit in the Gooram stretch could prevent accidents on other parts of the road, too.

“I think one of our problems is the very much increased traf-

fic along this road, because it shows up as the preferred way to travel by Google Maps [and other GPS applications],” he said.

“Once we get a speed limit reduction on the top half [of the road], that will reduce.”

He said the ute had been heading north when it crashed on Melbourne Cup Day, just like the vehicles in the other crashes he had seen on the dangerous stretch of road.

“The majority of these accidents that I’ve been to recently have all been not from our area – they’re not locals, they don’t know the roads,” Mr Stubbe said in August.

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has resigned from its role of waterway manager for the Goulburn River, from Hughes Creek to the Goulburn Weir including Lake Nagambie.

In May, councillors had voted to exit the role unless the State Government provided full funding for council to continue to undertake waterway management.

The May council report noted council has been the waterway manager for many years and the function costs ratepayers $150–$200k annually, while council receives no income from waterway patrolling activities.

At last month’s council meeting, councillors endorsed council’s continuation in the role under a shared service model with an external funding partner, under the requirement this shared service model be cost neutral for council.

However, following the meeting, council was unable to secure funding from the State Government to continue in the role.

Mayor Laura Binks said the decision had been challenging.

“We need to watch every cent of spending, and we can no longer continue to fund and deliver programs that are the responsibility of state

or Federal Government,” she said.

“We have asked Safe Transport Victoria to please provide us with the detail on how the waterway will be managed in the future so we can share this with our community.”

In May, Cr Reg Dickinson had described council as a “toothless tiger” on the waterways committee.

“We have contracted out to a company that carries out regular inspections, cruises the waterways, but has no power to book anyone, and that organisation costs us more than $75,000,” he said at the time.

Power outage lasts 13 hours for 3600 AusNet customers

ABOUT 3600 AusNet customers in Euroa and surrounding areas suffered a power outage for about 13 hours from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

An AusNet spokesperson said the outage, which began at about 7.30pm on Wednesday, occurred at a time during which “a storm front with a lot of lightning passed through the north east of the state”.

“The fault is on an electrical powerline that is over 200km long and it was difficult to isolate the fault remotely, so we had crews out patrolling the line into the night,” the spokesperson said.

“Despite not being able to get our helicopter in the air to patrol due to weather, our ground crews were able to narrow down the fault area and ensure the lines were clear, so we were able to get around 3000 customers back on supply at around 8.30am on Thursday.”

AusNet’s online outage tracker first showed an estimated restoration time of 2.30am, which was later updated to 7.30am, then 3pm, before power returned to most customers at 8.30am.

The estimated restoration time kept changing because “unfortunately, it took longer to isolate [the fault] than first estimated,” the spokesperson said.

According to AusNet, at 11am about 200 customers were still without supply, and at 12.30pm power had been restored for all customers.

Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour said the hospital and GraniteHill aged care facility had kept the power running at all times with the use of a generator.

Shell Coles Express Euroa and McDonalds Euroa, which are normally open 24 hours, both closed during the power outage, leaving residents without options nearby to buy petrol or food until Thursday morning.

Fare Enough café owner Broderick Floyd said he travelled to Shepparton overnight to buy fuel for his café’s generator.

“I think we’ve got 13 or 14 fridges and freezers, and making sure it’s all plugged in and doesn’t trip out in the middle of the night is… a lot of work,” he said.

“I haven’t slept because I was up checking that the fridges all didn’t come on at the same time and trip the generator. “[It’s] really frustrating because we all know the issues with it being on the end of a single-ended transmission line that’s one of the longest in the state, and because we’re such a safe seat that no one wants to spend any money on, and no one wants

to change their votes, we’ll never get any money spent on us and they’ll never fix it.”

Several other businesses lost food supplies and lost customers due to opening late on Thursday morning.

Oliver’s Euroa opened at 9.30am, three and a half hours after their normal opening time of 6am, and were unable to make chicken burgers or bacon and egg rolls due to perished supplies.

The Nest Euroa, normally open at the early hour of 6.30am, opened at 9am, missing out on serving customers during what is normally their “busiest time”, according to barista Tash Milburn.

Mawson’s Bakery opened at about 9am, but were unable to serve freshly baked goods until later in the morning.

“We lost nearly everything out of our freezers, cool room, cake cabinets… a lot of hard work has just been chucked out in the bin,” Mawson’s Bakery manager Brandon Mawson said.

Speaking to The Euroa Gazette early on Thursday afternoon, he said the crew had been “speed baking” to catch up.

“I’ve never seen the oven be pushed that hard and that quick – usually you bake at 240, we baked at 360,” he said.

Boho South community considers teaming up to buy disused church

By DARREN CHAITMAN MEMBERS of the Boho South community are considering raising money to buy a disused church after they were left disappointed

by Uniting Church’s decision to list the property for sale.

The property sits closely beside the Boho South Hall, and the hall committee has mown and maintained the grounds of the church since it closed in 2014 due to diminished congregation numbers.

Hall committee members including Amanda Koehler and Christine Ellis, along with other community members, see the two properties as part of one communal area, and they believe this area could be ruined by a private development like a residence or B&B. The land on Boundary Hill Road was first donated to Uniting Church by the late Jack Smith in 1960.

Mr Smith’s surviving daughters believe he donated the land for community use, but the community’s attempts to raise this concern with Uniting Church have been unsuccessful.

He said the land the church is on is “integral” to the area and is part of a social gathering space that has a character “very loved by locals”.

“I think people are trying to look after the place with the view that more and more people are coming to live here and they need this community space,” Mr Leunig said.

“And it does work as a community space.

“It’s a very Australian thing – I’m sure there are little places like this all across this country.

“People caring, looking after something.

“The communal thing, not just the private thing.

“I think we need it badly at this time – in the way the world is going, we need community.”

In a lively meeting, Strathbogie General Store owner Fiona Townsend, who uses the Boho South Hall regularly for book club meetings, was one of several people to share ideas.

She raised the possibility of creating a company that community members could buy shares in as a means to purchase the property – an idea inspired by the Yackandandah community’s method of purchasing a petrol

station in 2002.

Another attendee suggested the community could start their own religion to avoid having to pay taxes on the property, while others said it could be converted into a multi-faith church.

Mr Leunig later said he would “like to think it’s worth a try” to raise funds to purchase the property.

“I don’t know whether it’s possible – I would hope so,” he said.

“It’s not unprecedented.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, a lot of thinking to

By DARREN CHAITMAN MEMBER for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has thrown her support behind two ambitious sustainability projects originating in Euroa: the Euroa Arboretum’s plan to ramp up native seed production, and the Greening Euroa project.

The local MP used an address in parliament earlier this month to spruik the two projects, saying the Arboretum project could address a shortcoming in the government’s environmental policy.

She said the State Govern-

ment has been at “serious risk” of failing to meet the seed targets outlined in their Biodiversity 2037 strategy, which seeks to bolster the availability and supply of native seeds for environmental restoration.

“The proposal put forward by the Euroa Arboretum includes 20 hectares of seed production across three local sites, a new seed bank facility and upgrades to existing facilities at the arboretum,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This plan could be adapted and utilised across catchments across eastern Victoria.

“They are hard workers who are very passionate and have a strong vision for our environment, and I hope the Victorian government is taking their concerns seriously.”

Ms Cleeland said the Arboretum’s seed project “is not the only one in my region that would benefit significantly from some interest by the environment minister and investment by the government”, before outlining to her fellow parliamentarians the benefits of the Greening Euroa project.

“Greening Euroa will use recycled water to irrigate

our public green spaces, something that is essential to our community’s health and wellbeing during times of drought,” she said.

“Drought-proofing Euroa is something that is critically needed.”

The Greening Euroa project is a joint initiative between Strathbogie Shire Council, Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and community stakeholders.

Council is seeking a $3.8 million funding commitment to make the project a reality.

“The Longest Shadow” showcases our history I’VE felt for years that what Jeff Starkey was producing – his book, The Longest Shadow – was potentially the finest study of an Australian regional or rural area’s experience of WWI ever written.

The culmination of this long project is a very special occasion indeed.

Jeff ’s research has been prodigious.

He has been enmeshed in this region for decades, he cares about it and its people deeply, and this sentimental investment has injected a poignant fervour into his writing that is compelling.

Here and there he uses two words that you don’t often see in a history: “our region”.

Just a little window, but nevertheless revealing, about Jeff ’s sense of affiliation that underpins the book.

Its coverage is exceptional.

It’s a history of this region in the First World War, but it’s about so much more than 1914 to 1918.

Jeff sets the scene for what begins to unfold in 1914 with a superb survey of the region and its people across the pre-war decades.

You get the impression that he’s familiar with every farm and every street in every locality as he tells you about pre-war life not only in Euroa and Longwood, Strathbogie and Violet Town, but also in Balmattum and Bunganail; Caniambo and Karramomus; Garratanbunell, Wondoomarook and Terip Terip.

He covers pre-war life in spheres such as sport and religion, and, in view of Jeff ’s background, you won’t be surprised to

hear that there’s insightful coverage of the education that was taught in the schools in those days.

And then he launches into the core of his story, the catastrophe that he appropriately refers to as the “apocalypse”.

The Longest Shadow covers not only what was happening at the battlefields, but also what was happening back home, and integrates them well.

He has no qualms about challenging accepted perspectives, which not only adds to the liveliness of his writing, but also means that his book has ramifications above and beyond the story it tells about the people of this region.

It’s a compelling story, it’s your story, about your people and your region, and no doubt you’ll all be eager to read it for yourselves.

And I should emphasise that you don’t have to be a local to find it a fulfilling read.

Well done Jeff on invaluable work CONGRATULATIONS Jeff (and Bronwyn) Starkey on the successful launch of “The Longest Shadow” on Sunday.

I guess I was one of Jeff ’s ‘’sounding boards’’ and I always considered that to be a privilege – if you bumped into Jeff on Binney Street, you got this book chapter and verse.

Jeff had a book inside him – it was lodged in his heart and he has written it with his heart.

I believe it will be seen for what it is, an invaluable summation of a critically important time by all those with respect and admiration for an earlier generation from this district and for the subject matter of Jeff ’s work.

And congratulations to Jeff ’s wife Bronwyn who would have been the greatest ‘’sounding board’’ – how wonderful Bronwyn you were able to see the whole thing through.

Strong turnout at book launch MORE than 100 people attended the launch of Jeff Starkey’s World War One history book “The Longest Shadow” at the Euroa RSL building on Sunday.

The book – which the Euroa author had worked on for 12 years – covers what happened at home during the WWI period in what is now the Shire of Strathbogie (excluding Avenel and Nagambie), what happened to local soldiers during their time abroad, and life in the region in the decades before 1914.

Former Euroa resident Eric Lund, the event’s emcee, picked off the proceedings on the deck of the RSL building (the interior being still closed due to flood damage) by welcoming several notable guests.

These included Strathbogie Shire Council Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and his wife Anne Murray; Euroa RSL president Phil Munt and secretary/treasurer Neville Mawson; local historians Max Burnside, Loretta McPherson, Jenni Kennedy and Ron Horrigan; and historian Tracee Spiby.

He also welcomed guests who had travelled from Canberra and Melbourne: from Canberra was Mr Starkey’s aunt Gwen Dods, and from Melbourne were

convenor of the seventh battalion AIF family and friends group David Laird; Kylie Riha-Jones, author of the book “The Saxon Boys”; Dr Cathy Hirst, Mark Orford and Cathy’s mother Christine; and Melissa Rennie and her mother, cousins of Bill Symons VC. At least 16 more people in attendance, who had relatives from either the Euroa or Violet Town Shire who fought in World War One, were also welcomed.

Following a speech given by Mr Laird, Margaret and Gary Chowanetz performed the Eric Bogle song “Willie McBride”.

A second speech was delivered by Dr Andrew Dunning on behalf of its author, historian Ross McMullin, who had been unable to attend as he had come down with COVID-19.

An edited excerpt of Mr McMullin’s speech has been published as a letter to the editor in this week’s Gazette.

Mr Starkey took questions from the audience, before tea, coffee and baked goods were served as the author signed books.

The event’s large turnout was all the more impressive given it coincided with the Collingwood Football Club’s visit to Euroa with

the AFL Premiership Cup. Mr Starkey said he had not been concerned about the trophy diverting attendees from his book launch, and the turnout had been beyond his expectations.

“I sort of worked on the idea of there only being 50, which most of them would have been made up of my family, but I was just absolutely astounded by the number of people who turned out,” he said.

“It was just incredible – overwhelming, really.”

Nagambie Medical Centre welcomes much-needed new staff

ACROSS the world the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought many problems for medical and health services, especially a skills shortage in country areas.

In Australia the strain has affected many doctors, nurses and auxiliary services such as ambulance and aged care workers.

Nagambie Medical Centre has suffered from the scarcity of doctors wanting to work in regional areas.

Two doctors and a nurse have left this year.

One challenge has been to provide an environment to attract new medical staff.

They are still in need of a full-time nurse.

It has been difficult as many new workers may have to move themselves or their family nearby to work in a country small town, or travel distances each day to fulfil their role at the medical centre.

Not everyone wants to work in the country, but it is vital for country folk to know they have a reliable medical provider within easy reach.

But fortunately, the Nagambie practice has recruited two new staff mem-

The centre sometimes provides medical and ancillary services for over 200 locals a week as well as support for the Nagambie Healthcare aged care facility next door.

Dr Sidra Javed joined the Nagambie country practice team recently to help provide ongoing essential medical and health services to our community.

The Euroa Gazette spoke to the new doctor, Dr Sidra Javed, last week.

“I was born in Pakistan and spent my childhood in

Canada and later did my medical studies in Pakistan and worked there,” Dr Javed said.

“I moved to Australia in 2015 after I got married to Khurram who works for the IT Department of Victoria Police.

“So, basically, I am an Australian, Canadian and Pakistani.

“I have two little boys, Yousuf (seven and a half years old) and Aliyaan (two and a half years old).

“I live in Epping and commute to Nagambie.

“I love travelling and spending time in nature.”

She looks forward to meeting Nagambie people and providing medical support to the community.

Ted More is one of Euroa’s hidden talents

By DARREN CHAITMAN YOU may have noticed 90-year-old Euroa resident Ted More’s letters in The Euroa Gazette: they are often short dispatches from his daily life, like last week’s letter about his desire to talk reason to swooping magpies, or one in which he urged chatting, coffeedrinking Binney Street patrons to avoid gathering on the street to make way for mobility scooter users like himself.

I certainly have noticed and enjoyed these letters, so when I spotted a lovely panda bear bookmark on the counter at Euroa store Mi Creations & Gems, and learnt the artist was the very same Mr More, I

was intrigued and decided to learn more.

The Euroa Gazette invited the amenable man to our Railway Street office, where he explained he had been making art since he was a schoolkid.

“I just scribbled, just to please myself,” he said.

“I didn’t have any schoolmates because they were kicking footballs around or hitting cricket balls – I was never into that sort of stuff.

“I used to sit by myself and do a bit of artwork.

“I’m an individual, I suppose – a strange kid.”

Mr More said he was born in Warrnambool and later lived in Coffs Harbour and Melbourne before moving to Euroa in 2005 at the encour-

agement of his cousins, Euroa’s Joan and Natalie Moffat.

“It’s the best thing I ever did – I loved the place, loved people here,” he said.

He had worked in textile manufacturing, including as a factory shift manager, before a car accident reduced his mobility in 1982.

For about three or four years, he said he had been supplying the Euroa Library with bookmarks bearing his artwork, free of charge.

“Some I’ll do for the children, but their mothers like them more than what the

children do,” Mr More said.

“I love the librarians – they’re lovely people; they’re like my family.”

He said he does not particularly like his own artworks, but he is grateful other people like them.

“Ted’s a very, very generous man giving away his artworks,” librarian Marg Machonachie said.

She said library patrons love his bookmarks – “in fact, they’re all gone at the moment; he’s busily doing some more”.

competition for miniature artworks created by seniors, after he submitted what Ms Machonachie called “lovely, whimsical little pieces”.

Another fan of Mr More’s work is Mi Creations & Gems owner Tanya Boyd, who sells small paintings by the artist.

“He just came in for a watch battery and he was displaying some work I happened to see on his little trolley, and basically the rest is history – I love his stuff,” Ms Boyd said.

“I don’t think he gets enough credit – I think he’s one of those little closeted

finds you happen to stumble across when you’re looking through another box.”

As for Mr More’s letters to the editor, he said he has been writing these since his days in Coffs Harbour.

“One day I got a bit quiet on them and the editor rang me up and asked me where’s my letters,” he said.

“In my younger days when I was a bit fitter, I used to do a lot of letter writing.”

Older now he may be, if Mr More goes quiet on The Euroa Gazette, he can expect a phone call from us.

FilipinoAustralians gather for delicious barbecue

By MAYETTE MARTIN LATE last month, the Filipino Australian & Friends Association (FAFA) gathered for a free barbecue for our members.

It was more than just a barbecue; we enjoyed the day with extra plates of food shared by everyone.

We had entrees such as spring rolls, cooked at the venue, and empanadas (fried pastries filled with various ingredients like meat, cheese, and vegetables).

For mains, we savoured noodles, grilled and baked fish, and for dessert, our traditional sweet sticky rice, among others.

We also offered free soft drinks and water bottles to keep everyone refreshed.

In addition to the delicious

food, we relished the fresh air, engaged in relaxed conversations, and some of us stayed late into the afternoon, cherishing the camaraderie, jokes, stories and laughter.

Our picnic took place at the back of Aquamove in Shepparton, which serves as our main meeting place.

This location is ideal as FAFA members come from Shepparton, Euroa, Yarrawonga, and the surrounding areas, making it a central spot for everyone to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

We also had the pleasure of good music, hearty laughter, and quality bonding time together.

Personally, I am grateful to FAFA for the generosity of the barbecue and the warm camaraderie of our committees and members.

Strathbogie group’s legal action against government pushes on

By BERTRAM LOBERT IN August this year, local group Save Our Strathbogie Forest launched legal proceedings against the Victorian Government to stop the fuel reduction burning of several areas of important habitat for the endangered greater glider, Australia’s largest gliding marsupial.

Prior to launching the legal action, we asked the government to modify the burns to reduce the risk to the gliders.

None of our requests were agreed to.

The greater glider has

been known to occur in the Strathbogie Forest for many decades and in recent years government scientists have shown the forest to be a stronghold for the species in Victoria.

The Victorian government asserts that the burns will not have a significant impact on the greater glider population in the forest.

Such a defense appears to contradict information published by both the Australian and Victorian governments.

For example, the Australian government’s greater glider conservation advice lists fire, particularly too-

intense, or too-frequent fuel reduction burning, as having “severe” consequences for the species.

If the case is successful it may reduce or stop similar burns in particular areas critical to the survival of the greater glider elsewhere in Victoria and Australia.

The case is in no way attempting to stop all fuel reduction burning, as some comments in the media have claimed.

In our opinion, burning forest that is known to support large and healthy populations of a nationally endangered species, when the government itself rec-

ognizes that such fire poses a risk to that very species, represents poor forest management.

In this case, it’s the wrong fire in the wrong place.

The Federal Court hearing has been set for late January, 2024.

Longwood Seniors share November update

By JOHN MACKLIN LONGWOOD Seniors had another enjoyable twocourse meal at the Longwood Community Centre, which we have on the first Monday of each month.

All seniors are welcome.

Even though it was a long weekend for some, attendance was very good.

In attendance were two of our oldest members, who

have had birthdays recently – Jean Davidson celebrated her hundredth and Ruth King who turned 92.

It’s a privilege to have those elderly ladies who enjoy going to the Longwood Seniors luncheon every month.

At the end of this month, 24 of our seniors are travelling by bus, which leaves from the courthouse at 9.45am to Nagambie to walk

the new boardwalk around the lake, then have a meal and listen to the Merri Melodies at the rowing club, before venturing home.

The next Longwood Seniors luncheon is on Monday, December 4; this is the Christmas break-up and the last luncheon before February.

A singing group will be performing while the seniors are enjoying their lunch.

LONGEVITY AT LONGWOOD LUNCHEON: Jean Davidson recently celebrated her 100th birthday and Ruth King recently turned 92.

A HOT day for the VT market and Remembrance Day where cool drinks were appreciated.

On the same day Mary’s Garden had a very successful fundraiser selling herbs, vegies seedlings, succulents, bulbs and flowers.

A lot of donations were also received.

Seed funding was provided by VTAG. Some plants are leftover – contact Lisa at Community House if interested in purchasing them.

A member of the bowls club, the VTFNC, a Boho CFA firefighter and social organiser – and probably many more groups over the years – he was an all-round lovely chap.

The concert party from the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria provided a delightful afternoon of tunes from all the G&S operettas along with a commentary on how the G&S partnership was formed and developed.

A top line up of experienced performers was warmly appreciated by a hall full of people.

It was followed by a delicious afternoon tea provided by the parishioners of St Dunstan’s.

Well done to the organisers.

The Giving Tree at Community House is now open for donations for Christmas – please, no fresh food and items should not be wrapped.

(Heb 6:19, 2 Cor.4:16-18) All Earth is ‘waiting on tenterhooks’ for Gods’ perfect timing and Return of Jesus to His Kingdom rule. There is a season for everything under heaven. (Eccles.3:1-8) Gods’ faithful followers are aware of the prophetic promises found in the Bible, but we’re not given to know, exactly when Jesus will return, although signs and wonders are given as evidence and warn us to be prepared. (Matt. 24:42-44, Acts 2:1724) Only the Father God knows and He will tell Jesus when to return for His Bride.(Rev.19:7) Many agree that our world looks increasing like a tumultuous ‘wreck’.

But consider the ‘wrecking’ stages of a bursting acorn or a crysallis, which give birth to beautiful things like an oak tree or a butterfly!

Someday soon, earth will be saved by the timely return of Jesus Christ before man can destroys it completely; bringing on the restored, peaceful times of the longed for Millennium where “the wolf will lie down with the lamb”; and “every tear will be wiped away.”(Isaiah 11:6-9, Rev 21:1-4)

Members of the local community and visitors appreciated the chance to stop for a short while to remember those who represented Australia and many countries around the world that fought for the freedom gained for our nation and many other countries last century and this one.

A Nagambie Primary School student read the poem “On Flanders Fields” and St Joseph’s Primary School student Chanel gave a reading relevant to Remembrance Day. Representatives from the Nagambie RSL, two primary schools, Strathbogie Shire Council, the Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed, Nagambie CFA, Ambulance and historical society and one for RSL member Larry King at the

cenotaph to honour those who had paid the supreme sacrifice in war or from their injuries, especially those from our district.

At the 11th hour, the ode, last post, a minutes’ silence and reveille were observed just before the flag was raised to full mast.

The national anthem completed the closing of the 105th anniversary of Remembrance Day at Nagambie.

Thank you to the Nagambie RSL for providing the commemoration ceremony for young and old from the community to show their respect for those who served their country.

Way Back Wednesday - a look back at what was making news 20 years ago this week.

ON this week 20 years ago, debate raged over a proposed waste containment facility in Baddaginnie, north of Violet Town.

Splashed across the front page of the Gazette’s November 18, 2003 edition was the headline “Minister denies waste will be toxic”.

Later in the same edition, the debate raged on in a double-page spread, which featured a whopping 12 articles covering different opinions on the proposed site, as well as two photos.

Headlines included “Minister briefs Council on containment facility”, “Don’t dump city waste on Victorian farms”, “Waste containment facility will downgrade shire’s image”, “Victorians urged to get behind

establishment of safe waste facility”, “When is a toxic dump a toxic dump?”, “Member for Indi opposes Labor plan for a toxic waste dump”, “Waste containment facility”, “Site selection”, “What are the wastes?”, “Public meeting this Wednesday”, “Questions unanswered on toxic waste” and “Ministers and Mayors to discuss Victoria’s sustainable future”.

Pictures included Baddaginnie landholder Lyn Burns discussing her concerns with Member for Benalla Bill Sykes, and State Government minister Peter Batchelor being interviewed by WIN News outside the Strathbogie Shire Council offices on Binney Street.

In the same week, tickets were sold out for the official opening

of the Euroa Community Cinema, as politicians, former councillors and then-current councillors all flocked to the Civic Centre Hall for the Friday night celebration.

The guests watched “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”, which was “enjoyed by the

majority of [the] audience”.

In present times, Strathbogie Shire Council is hosting two free movie screenings this weekend to celebrate 20 years of the Euroa Community Cinema.

In other news this week 20 years ago, Lal Prentice (pictured) celebrated her 103rd birthday at Amaroo Hostel in Euroa.

Council shares update on Weir Road upgrade AT the September council meeting, councillors noted the $1.8 million upgrade to Weir Road, which had been approved by council in April 2023, would be delayed while a road safety audit was undertaken to address safety concerns.

Council has now shared an update on its website stating that council officers are in the process of revising the road de-

sign to address the recommendations in the road safety audit, along with a request for a stop sign in lieu of a give-way sign at the intersection of Weir and Nagambie-Rushworth Roads.

Council officers are expected to present a report to council in December.

Strathbogie Shire Council did not respond to questions from

this masthead asking the cost of the contract variation and whether council would pay a penalty for delaying the contract with Seven Creeks Excavations.

The road safety audit report is available on council’s website, and council has summarised its recommendations as follows:  Revise the road design to have 2.35m gravel shoulders

where practicable (originally specified with 1m shoulders);  seal the road as per the original specifications detailing a 4m seal width;  consider future speed restrictions for the length of road, where supported by the road safety audit; and  installation of additional safety signage.

Queen Elizabeth II rose garden blessed in Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT MEMBERS of the Nagambie community gathered together on Remembrance Day to not only honour those who had served their country in war and conflicts but also to bless a Memorial Rose Garden raised to honour our late Queen Elizabeth II, who served her country and her Commonwealth of nations for 70 or more years of her reign.

Queen Elizabeth II was the commander in chief of the armed forces so it was fitting that Her Majesty’s garden be blessed on that day, as she always attended a Remembrance Day ceremony wherever she was at that time.

Attendees includes representatives Strathbogie Shire Council, Nagambie and St Joseph’s Primary Schools, and local community groups, as well as some individuals who had donated a rose for the memorial rose garden project or provided volunteer help over the past three months, making the garden a reality and keeping the roses alive by watering it regularly.

St John’s Anglican Minister Reverend Richard Pennington led the group of donors and garden supporters in the blessing ceremony of the 17 donated roses by the community.

He shook holy water from his brass water vessel over the garden from four directions to ensure the roses

would be a commemoration for years to come in memory of Her Majesty.

Yours truly, rose garden coordinator Diane Grant, gave special thanks at the end of the service to all concerned and said the sentiment and patriotism for the project and support for this community project was felt by all who came along to show their respect, honour and fond memories of Her Majesty’s long reign.

“Thank you, Nagambie community, for your support and I hope you will remember Queen Elizabeth II and be proud of our small achievement to commemorate her here today and that our locals and visitors will respect the garden and our efforts,” I said.

Co-authors of dark fantasy novel to visit Euroa Library THE Euroa Library will welcome Benalla-based authors Benny Charles and Alex Robinson to talk about their debut novel “The Phoenix and the Spider” on Thursday, November 30 at 2pm.

“The Phoenix and the Spider” is the first novel in the “Children of the Aether” series.

A description of the novel provided to The Euroa Gazette says the Phoenix and the Spider have haunted Theo’s dreams for as long as she can remember.

“One evokes a feeling of

warm comfort, the other unbridled fear,” the description reads.

“Yet their presence in her otherwise unremarkable existence remains a mystery.

“Hidden in these visions lie the secrets of a past that spans countless lifetimes, each one filled with love, death, and untold power waiting to be reawakened.

Four dead in tragic Mansfield crash

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY IN tragic crash on the Mansfield–Woods Point Road four lives were lost on Sunday in what is believed to be an early morning vehicle fire.

At about 7am, a motorist observed a fire off the side of the road down in a paddock and stopping found a burnt out vehicle with several bodies inside.

Emergency services were called and responded with the CFA putting out the smouldering remains of the fire.

Four deceased people were found to be in in the vehicle.

At a press conference on Sunday, Road Policing Command assistant commissioner Glenn Weir said all causation factors, including speed, would form part of an investigation.

“Investigations are ongoing to ensure we have proper identification of the vehicle and the number of deceased,” AC Weir said.

“This is going to be a complex investigation.

“Disaster victim identification personnel are on scene.”

He said it was not known yet whether the victims had been killed by the crash or by fire, but that would all be forensically examined.

“What we can tell you is

the vehicle was travelling north along the Mansfield Woods Point Road and that the vehicle lost control, has gone off the road, hit an embankment on the left, spun back around and off the road into the paddock and then burst into flames.

“In terms of occupants, we know that it was a rental vehicle and again we are working through the rental company to identify who rented the vehicle which will help identify the occupants, so until we know that we cannot give out any details around that.

“This collision is the latest in a series of many multideath collisions we have had this year.

“In a collision like this (Piries) we investigate all aspects - speed is an obvious one but that particular area is known for wildlife on the road but that’s speculation.”

AC Weir said the incident was “a catastrophic scene”.

He added the police believe all the people were known to each other and had a common connection through work.

“We think the people are relatively local from around Shepparton, Benalla or Mansfield area but that also is to be determined,” AC Weir said.

“This time last year we had two multi fatalities; this year we have had four quadruple

“That’s 34 extra lives lost this year in multiple fatalities and this accident follows on the back of last Sunday’s fatalities in Daylesford in which five lost their lives.

“We will continue our efforts to try and limit the carnage on Victorian Roads; at this stage 256 lives lost this year so far – that’s the highest since 2008.”

a single car accident on the Merton-Euroa Road on Saturday, November 4 (Melbourne Cup weekend) when at about 4pm at Gooram an 18-yearold Shepparton woman died when the car she was driving crashed into a tree.

Mansfield Highway Patrol also attended another single vehicle incident on the Maintangoon Road at Bonnie Doon that same day.

“We (highway patrol) detected one drink driver during Operation Furlong period which was a fairly good result,” Acting Sergeant Neal Leach said.

Highway Patrol conducted 328 RBTs and issued 18 infringement notices over a five day period.

“The message is still out there though; drive to conditions, don’t drink, don’t be distracted and more importantly, don’t speed,” Sgt Leach said.

Mansfield Police Station Senior Sergeant Steve Carden said over the long weekend in addition to usual patrols, residents would have seen Mansfield Police had dedicated foot patrols, bike patrols, targeted road trauma operations as well as dedicated shifts covering the entire weekend by Mansfield Highway Patrol.

DESPITE some healthy competition in the Euroa Show’s poultry section last month, the chooks weren’t the only ones getting the awards this season.

Two members of Euroa and District Poultry Club were recently presented with the prestigious honour of being awarded as Melbourne Royal Show lifetime members for all their hard work and dedication.

Longtime club members Neil Penny and Megg Miller were both honoured with the same lifetime membership.

The awards didn’t stop with the memberships, with Michael Holmes taking home the top spot of Champion Bird in Show, with wife Kathy taking

home Reserve Champion, and still in the family, Michael’s father Rolly also walking home awarded for his birds.

Growing up in Violet Town, Michael was made the president of the poultry club at the young age of 21.

“I think the old blokes thought they could get a young bloke in and train him up,” Michael’s wife and club secretary, Kathy Holmes, said.

“Well, they’ve all passed on now, and Michael is still president of the club at the age of 57.”

They all said the Euroa Show was a great one this year, with plenty of junior entries keeping them encouraged.

“It was so great to be there on the day with my family, especially to see all the hard work and dedication rewarded,” Ms Cleeland said.

How much does council spend in legal fees?

DATA provided to Council Watch has revealed Strathbogie Shire Council spent $479,877 on legal expenses for 178 legal matters in the 2021/2022 and 2022/23 financial years.

While the figure may seem high at first glance, the council only comes in at the 33rd highest spend on a list of 50 Victorian councils

that provided data to Council Watch.

Some 29 councils did not provide any data to Council Watch.

The top five spenders on legal fees were Yarra City Council ($5,999,632), Kingston City Council ($4,643,322), Greater Geelong City Council ($3,944,136), Whitehorse City Council ($3,477,981) and

Hume City Council ($3,425,369).

In this region, Moira Shire Council spent $857,467 and Indigo Shire Council spent $167,886, while Greater Shepparton City Council, Wangaratta Rural City Council and Mansfield Shire Council did not provide data to Council Watch.

Of those that responded, the

council that spent the least on legal fees over the two financial years was Hindmarsh Shire Council at $81,275.

The total combined expenses of all councils that responded was $63,955,653.

Council Watch is a Victorian organisation that monitors the local government sector.

Regatta a great day despite conditions Choir Monkeys provided show as local wineries offered tastings

By DAVE ANDREWS WELL, if you didn’t venture out to the regatta late last month, I don’t blame you.

Overcast, and the wind.

Surf boats would have been more appropriate as the 130odd crews, who rowed in the event, headed past the Nagambie Hostel and into the “bowl”.

A hellish crosswind greeted them as the rowed past the brewery and headed west down the rowing course, to finish their 5.2km rowing course.

They had started up at the caravan park boat ramp, off Loddings Lane and rowed down past the caravan park.

Once they hit “teddy bear corner”, the Kirwans Bridge fork, they headed right towards town.

You can hide from most of the elements on the river, where you generally get good protection, but shallow exposed straits and bays are notorious, if unkind weather is afoot.

Enough complaining, it was a great day overall.

FOOT OF THE GOULBURN: Nagambie’s “foot of the Goulburn” regatta took place late last month.

Despite heavy wind and overcast conditions, Dave Andrews said it was a great day. and oars, it was over to the boat-park for a feed and some entertainment.

The BBQ Den and Gozleme (Turkish street food) did the heavy lifting in feeding the ravenous rowers.

If you were an adult on the day, you had further options, with our fine wineries presenting their wares.

All looked like they were having a busy time, offering tastings and sales.

Collingwood premiership trophy visits GraniteHill

IT was with great excitement that residents at GraniteHill received a surprise visit from the Collingwood Football Club with the 2023 AFL Premiership Cup on Sunday night, organised with the assistance of Euroa Football Netball Club.

This event was truly a fitting end to a successful 2023 football season at GraniteHill after a bumper year of livestream football and netball action, and weekly visits by Neale Poole on friday nights for football review, all of which continued to create a lively and engaging atmosphere.

Former Collingwood football player, Euroa legend and GraniteHill resident Dick O’Bree was able to share the moment with his family and greatgreat-grandson Billy, which added a nostalgic and meaningful touch to the occasion.

Euroa Health thanked staff member Fiona Elliot for her willingness and enthusiasm to share her son Jamie’s football journey, as many residents are lifelong Collingwood supporters.

GraniteHill resident and friend of Fiona and her family Mr Peter Gleeson provided an insight into Jamie’s football career, which he has followed very closely, before presenting Fiona with flowers.

It’s wonderful to hear about the generosity and community engagement demonstrated by the Collingwood Football Club in providing this opportunity for the Euroa Health residents.

Such events play a crucial role in enhancing the wellbeing of residents, particularly those who may no longer be able to attend events in person.

THE Euroa Health board chair Linsey Siede and CEO Melissa Seymour hosted their annual general meeting last Thursday.

The meeting was held at the local cinema in Euroa and was attended by more than 50 community members.

Linsey and Melissa presented reports which continue to provide transparency in relation to the organisation from the past year, and an insight into the achievements from the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan of Euroa Health.

Director and chair of the finance and audit sub-committee Chris Thomson presented the financial results for the year ending June 2023.

The financial statements are available in the annual report which can be viewed from the Euroa Health website.

The Euroa Health board of

directors welcomed two new directors, Chris Mutton and Andrew Westblade.

These directors bring to the board their experience in finance and information technology.

Guest speaker Norieul Kinross, who is paramedic community support coordinator for Ambulance Victoria, spoke of the continued close relationship held by Euroa Health, Ambulance Victoria and GV Health.

Employee milestones were celebrated: Linda Ellis (10 years), Frances Ireland (25 years), Jennifer Thompson (35 years) and Sue Martin with an incredible 50 years of service.

Euroa Health thanked all staff, volunteers and members of the community for the continued support received over the 2022/23 year and look forward to another busy year.

By GREG BLATCHFORD THERE was no Midweek Pennant last week but the club has been a hive of activity again with Cup Day Social Bowls, Club Championship events, Friday night Follies and all three divisions playing at home on Saturday.

Cup Day saw 25 bowlers take to the green with Marg Goode and Dot Lomer being the best of the two game winners ahead of Shane Drysdale and Rachel - Richard Nobles daughter who was home from England visiting family and took the opportunity to mix with the locals.

We also had a fine afternoon tea; John Groat’s Cup Sweeps and some elegant hats were on display.

On Friday Night three club championship matches were completed and whilst I can’t remember the players’ names, I noticed the Pimpernel shining in the Moonlight, saw the jack move backwards and learned that you should never take the Bear for Granted.

Our raffle winners were Noel Moon (meat tray) and Margaretha Cerini (bottle of wine) whilst Judy Jennings and Jan Sheargold added their names to the list of Nifty 50 winners.

In Weekend Pennant Division one went down in a tight tussle to Shepparton Park, Division four bounced back to defeat Dookie and Division six prevailed against the previously undefeated Yea combination - a big thank you to Shaileigh Roberts for filling in when Kaye Stevens became unwell.

In good news for the Club both Division four and Division six are sitting on top of the ladder but it is a long season and we have to continue to work hard and support our team mates.

AVENEL BOWLS CLUB

By KATE DONOVAN WEEKEND Pennant Division seven Round five Avenel 14 – 37 defeated Eildon 0 -32.

IT was a very close game for Kyle Pedder, Graeme Toy, Ross Sinclair, Brett McDonald (s) with just a few shots separating the teams all game.

Avenel were one down with two ends to bowl and with steely determination they won both ends by two and the game 20 – 17.

Avenel led from the third end, but Eildon chased down Marg Harrison, Ron Harrison, Marion Gittus, Glen Bell (s) by the 18th end to be one ahead.

Spurred on by their teammates come from behind win on the other rink, they won the last three ends to claim the victory by two shots, 17 – 15.

This win puts Avenel into the top four.

It’s game next Saturday has been forfeited by Kyabram.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round five Avenel 4 – 83 defeated by Shepparton Park 14 – 108.

Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) were up eight zip after the first three ends.

They never lost the lead and in a great team effort, winning sixteen ends, they powered home with a commanding sixteen shot win, 29 – 13.

Things did not go well for Howard Geldard, Geoff Hateley, Charlie Kemp, Noel Slater (s) who were fourteen shots in arrears by the 18th end.

The team found another gear and won six of the last seven ends, scoring sixteen shots to one to claim an outstanding come from behind victory, 25 – 23.

In contrast Pam Pedder, Donna Rowley, James Wall, Jake Wall (s) tried hard but were unable to reel in an accurate Shepparton Park rink losing 14 – 35.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) started well winning the first six ends.

However, the Shepparton Park lads found the line and length and maintained consistency for the rest of the game to beat the girls convincingly 37 – 15.

The next game for Avenel is at home against Seymour VRI.

Bendigo veteran wins the Medley Championship

By JOHN KING BENDIGO’s Fred Heinze braved very wind conditions to shoot a creditable 137/150 on Sunday at the Euroa Clay Target Club.

His score was two points better than St James president Stephen Murphy and so he won this event outright.

The other event on the program was the Old Fashioned Side By Side Double Barrel.

This event is restricted to the use of the old style firearms that were in use many years ago.

Euroa’s Brodie Asquith proved the best scoring 18/20.

Meanwhile at the Victorian State Championships, Tony Rohrlach scored a third place in the A grade section of the Single Barrel event with the score of 72/74.

The next competition is scheduled for Sunday December 10 which will be the club’s annual Christmas Shoot with lots of Christmas Goodies as trophies.

Scorching showdowns and local derbies heat up the courts

HOT and windy conditions greeted all seven Euroa sides when they played at home on Saturday.

It was an afternoon of local derbies as hometown sides battled it out for some nail-biting results.

Despite winning fewer sets, Longwood Lawn hung on by nine games to beat Terip Terip.

An 8-1 win in the mixed by Brent Moore and Lily Meehan proved pivotal with Longwood Lawn claiming the match by just nine games.

The 62-53 win takes Longwood Lawn into second place on the ladder behind St Paul’s.

It came right down to the wire for St Paul’s whose men had a tough day against the big-hitting Moglonemby men.

Last year’s best and fairest winner Grant Davey didn’t make things easy for St Paul’s number one man Mark Borthwick.

But again, the ladies in Sarah Ternes, Faye Mollison and Kelly Hill, cruised to comfortable wins in all their sets.

Faye Mollison was central to the side’s six game success by winning all three sets.

The final score was 54-48.

Gooram has consolidated its position at the bottom of the ladder after a 30 game loss to Euroa Lawn.

Lawn ladies Marja Wondergem, Sue Vaughan and Row Ellis won all their sets as did Caid Miller.

The final score was 41-71.

And it was another battle between local sides in Section two when St Paul’s took on Longwood Lawn.

Deb Seach was a handy fill-in for Longwood but her three winning sets weren’t quite enough to get Longwood over the line.

St Paul’s retains its spot atop the ladder with a 55-38 win.

By RICHARD JOHNSON SCORES of Net 66 were needed to take home the Drummond Golf November Monthly Medals on Saturday.

Michelle Thompson taking the Ladies while Kevin Meade won his first Euroa Monthly Medal on a countback from Brendan Redfern also on Net 66.

69 players enjoyed warm and sometimes windy conditions in the medal round which was the opening round of the Ladies Club Championships and round two for the Men. Melissa Eddy took out Division One and established an early level in the championship with a Net 72.

Balls down the line went to Erica Mercer 69, Marion McMartin 71, Lorraine Ellis and Dot Rule on 72.

Brendan Redfern took out Division one and staked a claim on the B Grade Men’s Championships with a fine Net 66.

Ball winners were Glen McMartin, Paddy McCarthy and Chris Burke all on 69.

Nick Johnson and Don Bubeck 70, Josh Bell 71, Dale McIntosh 72, Paul Robinson, Richard Eddy and Ed Carracher all on 72.

ing the casual late afternoon event, Charlie Watson had another win with 26 points as he continues to tear his handicap apart.

Matt Eddy had a tidy 21, Michelle Grady and Tony Walters both on 20 with four others beating their handicaps on 19.

Wednesday saw 21 Men play the game they all love to hate in a par event.

The best scores were Tony Walters plus four, Healey and Sutherland plus three, while Freda Edwards plus three was the best of the ladies.

Lindsay Park Knockout saw wins to R Wishart over P McCarthy, Gary Ritchie over David Barker, Keith Seeber over Glen McMartin with Lucas Paul still to play John Gilbert.

Could it be that the Silver Cup will be contested by our two Lindsay Park Members.

Monday November 20 is the John Dewan Seniors Tournament with the prestigious Euroa Shield four ball on Sunday December 4 followed by the Eliza Forlonge events on 5th and 6th December.

The Club Championships are at the half way mark.

In A Grade Ed Carracher has an eight shoot lead over Glen McMartin, Cam Roper one further back.

B Grade has Brendan Redfern with his nose in front of Rick Brodie and in C Grade Kevin Meade holds the lead, two shots to Don Bubeck and Mick Keeley two further back.

Brian Rosenbrock found how challenging the encroaching trees on the par three 12th can be when he’s tee shot rebounded to the front of the 11th green.

Not often are players forced to lay up to the creek on 12 and it was two

shots more before he made it over.

Next week another stroke round for the third round of the Men’s and second round of the Ladies Championships.

The Winner of the day Angus Murray from Avenel with a score of 42 points.

The Runner up of the day was Allan Rowarth with a score of 42 points.

The Winner of the Bingo, Bango, Bongo was Allan Rowarth with 24 points.

The Runner up of the Bingo, Bango, Bongo was Ian Barker with 23 points.

Rollercoaster of ups and downs for Euroa cricket club EUROA CRICKET CLUB - UNDER 16s

By CHRISTINE JACKSON FRIDAY night saw Euroa Cricket Club travel to Deakin Reserve to play Central Park St Brendan’s in the round four under 16A competition.

This was the first 45 over format two dayers.

After been soundly beaten last week the Euroa lads had a point to rebuild their reputation to their loyal supporters.

The evening started on a positive note by Euroa winning the toss and having no hesitation in batting first, with a flat and dry pitch at Deakin Reserve.

Opening the innings for Euroa was Cale Robertson and Oliver Swain a left and right-hand batsman combination started constructively.

With some enthusiastic words from the coach, prior match still fresh in their minds regarding putting a value on their wickets and batting the allocated overs.

Cale and Oliver put their noses to the grind stone with good solid defence and smart running between the wickets.

At drinks, 15 over mark Euroa 0-36 a great start by the lads.

The second session saw the first wicket fall Cale Robertson for 14 from 58 balls a well-constructed innings.

Cricket Flashback: Remarkable journey of John Law in 1977 and 1978/79

By JOHN GILBERT IN the annals of Strathbogie cricket history, the name John Law stands out as a testament to skill, versatility, and dedication.

In the summer of 1978, this all-around sportsman left an indelible mark on the cricket pitch, showcasing his prowess as a fast bowler against the Euroa Juniors side on the ‘Friendlies.’

It was a performance that reverberated through the cricketing community, as Law scalped an impressive nine wickets at the cost of 45 runs, culminating in a memorable hat trick that started with David Mastin and involved Bruce Thomson and Ben Derwentsmith.

The 1978/79 season proved to be a crowning glory for John Law. He dominated the cricketing scene, clinching the EDCA trophy pool with distinction.

Law’s statistics spoke volumes: Champion, Maygar – 446 runs at an astonishing average of 50, and a Bowling

Aggregate of 44 wickets at an enviable average of 10.

His exceptional all-around performance made him a cricketing force to be reckoned with.

However, Law’s cricketing prowess wasn’t confined to a single season.

Rewind to 1977, and Strathbogie Cricket Club clinched the EDCA A Grade Premiership, with Law playing a pivotal role.

Remarkably, his commitment to the North Melbourne VFL team led him to miss the Grand Final, a sacrifice that would be rewarded with an VFL Premiership and over 200 games of football glory.

The 1976/77 season was another feather in John Law’s cap.

Winning the EDCA Maygar with an impressive 721 runs, he also secured the Batting and Bowling average with a remarkable 9.9.

His consistent performance contributed significantly to Strathbogie Cricket Club’s Premiership victory.

Law’s excellence wasn’t confined to club cricket; he was a regular EDCA Repre-

sentative and a key member of the triumphant 1977 EDCA Bendigo Countryweek Premiership team.

The Bendigo Countryweek Premiership victory showcased the collective talent of the team, with players like Gordon Gibbs, Greg Withers, and the stellar John Law, who claimed eight wickets for 13 runs.

Wayne Mackrell’s seven wickets for 28 runs further solidified the team’s dominance.

The final, held on January 21, 1977, at Golden Square, saw Rochester lose to Euroa, with Neil Byers standing out with a brilliant half-century.

Law’s bowling prowess was evident as he claimed four wickets for 20 runs, contributing significantly to the team’s success.

Neil Byers, the captain of the Bendigo Countryweek Premiership team, not only led by example but also claimed the Most Runs trophy for the week.

John Law’s legacy transcends the boundary ropes, weaving through cricketing fields and football ovals.

By DAN GODSMARK B IN celebration of their 2023 premiership success, the Collingwood Football Club has embarked on a historic journey, taking the premiership cup on a neverbefore-seen national tour.

The tour aims to provide Collingwood members and supporters across the country with a unique opportunity to leave their mark on the prestigious silverware.

The cup made its public appearance this Sunday to Memorial Reserve, where it was warmly welcomed by adoring kids and supporters.

In a vibrant gathering,

Euroa Football Netball Club E F tb ll N tb ll Cl b president Scott Watson extended a warm welcome to more than 300 attendees at the club.

Scott Watson took the stage to share insights into the history of one of Euroa’s own, Jamie Elliott.

The event also featured the presence of Ryan Pendlebury, the new senior coach of the Euroa Football Netball Club, who happens to be former Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury’s brother.

Some dedicated families even traveled from Melbourne to get a touch of the famous cup.

Darren shared, “We went to the grand final, and it was such an amazing experience”.

“To travel up to Euroa, we got to experience a new town and skip the lines we would have encountered if we went to one of the Melbourne showings,” he said.

Benita added, “It was really hard getting tickets to the grand final, our kids had to miss out”.

When asked about Euroa being Jamie Elliott’s hometown, Benita said, “Oh yes,

our kids Jamie kid love l J i and d were at the game he kicked the goal after the siren against the Bombers”.

Premiership cup tour manager, Jake Bulafkin, is leading the cup around the state and later to all states in Australia.

The first leg of the tour has seen the cup available to Members and supporters at the AIA Vitality Centre before traveling to regional Victoria, including Warrnambool, Ballarat, Shepparton, Euroa and Sale.

The interstate tour will take just under three weeks to complete and will see the

Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly expressed the club’s joy in sharing the cup with as many members and supporters as possible.

He stated, “Our Premiership success was achieved by many – our players, staff, members and supporters”.

This cup is a representation of the entire Collingwood family, and we look forward to sharing it with you all.”

The tour will cover various towns and cities, including Adelaide, North Albany, North Mandurah, Darwin, Palmerston, Cairns, Sydney, Hobart, Devonport, and

Launceston.

L t After a threeth week journey, the cup will return to the Maypies’ HQ at the AIA Vitality Centre.

Kelly added, “We have one of the largest supporter bases in the AFL, all spread across the nation, and we hope as many fans as possible will be able to celebrate with us”.

Collingwood, a club that has undergone a remarkable transformation, stands as a testament to resilience and reinvention.

From a team once scorned by many, they have emerged not just as a force on the field but a source of inspiration for fans across the nation.
