Strathbogie Shire push to host rowing events at the Lake Nagambie venue g THE Strathbogie Shire Council continues to push for the inclusion of rowing in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying that using the Lake Nagambie venue ‘just makes sense’.

Council says it’s ready, willing and able to host rowing on Lake Nagambie.

It’s a push being backed

by Olympic rowing gold medallist Lucy Stephan who used the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre as her training ground to prepare for her medal winning 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I have competed and trained at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre throughout my rowing career,” Ms Stephan said.

“Lake Nagambie is an inspiring 2km course and location which helped me to prepare for the 2020

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said Council was advocating to the Victorian Government to first include rowing as a sport in the games and then commit to hosting it at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre.

“Although rowing is an optional Commonwealth Games sport - it is one of Australia’s oldest and most successful sports and we believe the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre provides the perfect place to feature this event,” Cr Binks said.

Community paramedics can solve ambo crisis: MP LIBERAL Democrats MP for Northern Victoria, Tim Quilty, has urged the Victorian Government to get behind a scheme that frees up emergency services by allowing home visits by paramedics.

Founded last year, the HMS Collective is a group of highly qualified paramedics who provide medical attention for people who don’t need to be taken to hospital.

Modelled after successful schemes in Canada and the UK, the home visits prevent the over-use of ambulances and long wait times at emergency wards.

HMS Collective started in the Macedon Ranges and now has patients in Sunbury, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne’s north and west where they have reduced ambulance call out times by an average of 90 hours a week.

Councils joining together for a sustainable future AS part of a regional collaborative project for kerbside waste and recycling services, 12 councils and alpine resorts across the Hume region - including Strathbogie Shire - are taking an important step towards reducing material to landfill.

This aims to support a sustainable regional circular economy and drive economic growth.

A request for tender has been released this week which will cover long term contracts for the collection, transport and processing/disposal of commingled recycling, glass, food organics and garden organics (FOGO), and general waste.

The collaborative procurement, which is part of the Resource Recovery Collective - Hume (RRCH), is one of the largest of its kind in regional Victoria.

The initiative will also help councils and alpine resorts to implement actions set out within the Victorian Government’s circular economy policy, supporting the region’s transition toward a low carbon, circular economy.

“Collaborative waste management procurements offer significant volumes of recyclables to the market, achieving economies of scale for councils and al-

pine resorts, and providing more certainty for industry - which is likely to attract greater levels of investment in infrastructure.”

Mitchell Shire Council chief executive officer Brett Luxford said his council was excited by the opportunities the Resource Recovery Collective - Hume will offer communities.

“We have previously participated in successful collaborative procurements in the Hume region and understand the benefits of coming together to reduce the number of individual procure-

ments in the market,” Mr Luxford said.

Our aim is to drive competitiveness and create local employment opportunities.”

To achieve the objectives of the Resource Recovery Collective Hume, a focus has been placed on evolving traditional contractual arrangements so that they can accommodate greater transparency, responsiveness, flexibility and accountability.

Director of Infrastructure Services at the Rural City of Wangaratta Marcus Goonan said that participating councils and alpine resorts recognise the role they play in building a strong and resilient recycling system.

“By sharing some of the benefits and risk with industry, we can offer certainty for contractors who in turn, can provide cost effective, safe, innovative and reliable recycling solutions for our communities,” he said.

Council meets with Ruffy community over tree concerns MEMBERS of the Strathbogie Shire Council met with Ruffy locals at the Tablelands Community Centre last week to discuss the community’s concerns about dangerous trees on the Longwood-Ruffy Road.

The meeting was called after several trees had fallen down onto the road, narrowly avoiding commuters and locals who travel through the area on a daily basis.

Shire chief executive officer, Julie Salomon, Mayor Laura Binks, manager of operations Brian Doyle and other relevant parties were in attendance for meeting.

There were also at least 30 Ruffy residents who participated in the talks on Wednesday, June 8.

The meeting was planned as a one-hour conversation to discuss what could be done to remove the trees that the town claims to be dangerous.

The end result was a two-hour meeting, often filled with frustration, interruptions and an unsatisfied audience.

Many concerns and gripes were brought up by the Ruffy locals, varying in levels of rel-

evance and productivity to the originally planned conversation.

While frustrations and emotions were running high during the conversation, it was evident that the Ruffy community were genuinely concerned about the safety of their neighbours, workers and visitors that use the area.

The main disgruntlement arose when shire employees described that their responsibility only extended to trees in a ‘road maintenance envelope’, meaning that many of the trees thought to be dangerous would not be part of their jurisdiction.

This envelope is defined as the area from drain to drain and to a height of five metres.

A handful of attendees left the discussion early due to being dissatisfied with the outcomes or the way the conversation had evolved.

Ms Salomon re-iterated that council was working within its boundaries to maintain the

safety of the residents that use the roads underneath the trees in Ruffy.

“Strathbogie Shire Council makes the health and safety of our residents a priority,” Ms Salomon said.

“In this instance, we are doing everything we can within our areas of responsibility.

“Managing the retention of old growth trees for the benefit of our environment, against the safety of road users, is something we deal with right across our shire.

“Our arborist has conducted a full review of the trees in this area on the Ruffy-Longwood Rd and last night we committed to a further audit by an independent arborist.

“We must listen to our expert arborists and we always act when they advise there is a safety risk.”

A major concern brought up during the meeting was the perceived quality of the arborist’s report.

At least one of the trees marked for monitoring by the arborist, meaning that it did not require to be cut down and was

not deemed a safety risk, was one of the more recent trees to fall along the road.

As a result of the discussion with council, a second independent arborist will undertake a comprehensive risk based assessment of 15 trees on the road.

This was a pleasing outcome for many in the audience.

Ms Salomon also listened to concerns from the community about a lack of signage and safety warnings on the roads.

“We have also erected signage in the area, urging motorists to take care,” she said.

The most pressing dispute raised by the audience related to whether any of the trees would actually be removed.

Following the discussion, it was confirmed that at least six trees in the spoon drain of the road will be removed.

Council have said they will investigate the necessity of permits for the action and provide an update accordingly.

Further conversations are expected to be held throughout July, with council and the Ruffy working group keeping in contact as proceedings continue.

THE Victorian State Government is ensuring volunteers who are critical to the delivery of essential and community services can emerge stronger from the pandemic.

Minister for disability, ageing and carers Anthony Carbines last week opened applications for the $1 million Emerging Stronger grants program so that volunteers can build stronger, more resilient and inclusive communities.

“Volunteers are vital to a vast array of essential services and community activities. They are also healthier and happier through social connection, and the sense of purpose and achievement volunteering provides,” Mr Carbines said.

“The grants program will boost volunteering to help drive Victoria’s social recovery from COVID-19.”

The program is a key component of the Victorian Volunteering Strategy launched in May, which encourages people to give volunteering a go, or get back into it, after a significant decline in

Activities announced for Winter Wonderland event

By GUS RIDDER THERE will be much more than ice skating at the upcoming Winter Wonderland event in Euroa.

The event will be held this weekend, featuring an iceskating rink and more activities for all ages.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said among the attractions was an awesome virtual reality flight motion experience in the Swiss Alps.

“The incredible virtual reality set up makes you feel as if you’re flying through the Swiss Alps by laying on a specially designed flying platform,” Cr Binks said.

“The flight path takes you

over the Alps and there is a competition to see how many hoops you can fly through.

“We will have a leader board for the event with the competition running over both Saturday and Sunday.

“The winner will receive their choice of Euroa Community Cinema tickets and a pass to GoAdventure or the Avenel Maze.”

Cr Binks said there would be a chance to capture the memories shared over the weekend with a special mirror photo booth.

“You can customise your photos with colourful animations, and you can also send them to your phone so they are shareable,” she said.

The Strathbogie Shire FReeZA crew will also support the event with live music and DJ sets throughout the two events.

“There will also be the opportunity for adults to enjoy some locally-produced wines with Strathbogie Wines selling mulled wine and glasses of local wine at the Euroa event,” Cr Binks said.

The Euroa event will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 11am-7pm & Sunday, June 19 from 11am-4pm.

A Winter Wonderland event was also held in Nagambie last weekend.

By DIANE GRANT WINTER Wonderland magic came to Nagambie on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend thanks to Strathbogie Shire and Go Nagambie and a Victorian Government grant for an Outdoor Activation project.

Nagambie hosted the Winterfest skate park outdoor event on June 11 and 12, with Euroa hosting this weekend.

Visitors came from wide and far to join the locals in this winter attraction.

The synthetic ice rink was on Jacobson’s Outlook in Nagambie’s High Street, overlooked by the water tower and with a view of the lake.

The weather was kind to the wannabee skaters on the Saturday and much hilarity could be heard by the adults and children who undertook their first go at skating on something slippery.

A snow machine pumped flakes across the skaters and made the atmosphere appear like a real magical winter’s scene.

The Strathbogie Youth Pop Up bands “Bad Ibis” and “The Counterfeiters” played during the afternoon.

The Nagambie Lakes Men’s Shed fed many patrons with their barbecue, the Olivers Lane coffee and cake van served up a warm winter’s welcome cuppa, and the Mitchel-

Council, the activities event group who conducted the activity and the Victorian Government for providing the grant to enable country families to have a great weekend enjoying this winter’s fun time.

Euroa Secondary College fundraising for MND EUROA Secondary College will raise money for MotorNeuron Disease (MND) charity, FightMND, for the second year running.

The school will sell and wear ‘big freeze’ beanies as part of their uniform, with all funds raised going directly to the foundation.

MND is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells controlling the muscles fail to work normally and eventually die.

FightMND is an organisation that has been working towards raising funds for research that is designed to take potential treatments from a science lab, to the MND patient, to eventually find a cure.

Unfortunately, 2022 has seen MND take away Neale Daniher’s ability to be the voice of the fight, so FightMND is calling on all Australians to step up play on and help lead

the fight - in action not words.

The beanies provide an opportunity for the school to give their support to the organisation and help find a cure for MND. Beanies were available via pre-order to all students, staff and the wider community, but the school has also pledged to sell more.

Each beanie is $25, and the school is encouraging everyone in the community to purchase them.

These can be bought at the front office of the school during school hours.

To further help with raising more money to find a cure, the school is hosting their own ‘Big Freeze’ event in the last week of term, in honour of the iconic fundraiser at the MCG each June long weekend.

A range of individuals have been working on recreating the ‘slide event’ with an ice

bucket challenge where teachers are either selfnominated or nominated by the school community to participate.

However, they only get “iced” if they meet their individual money goal.

All teachers will have collection tins at the front office where students, staff and our wider school community can donate to the teacher they most want to see participate in the ice bucket challenge.

The school’s goal for 2022 is to raise $4000, aiming to beat 2021’s total of $3500.

More support for veterans’ families VETERANS’ families and carers will be supported by a new program run by Melbourne Legacy and backed by the State Government, as the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide continues its investigations.

Victorian Veteran Family Services, in which the State

Government has invested $500,000, will offer individualised support to the families and carers of veterans.

The VVFS will provide extended eligibility and referral pathways for families and loved ones of veterans, complementing existing support programs already available

to the veteran community.

Families and carers of veterans can also reach out for extra wellbeing support through a new phone number, 1800 VET FAM, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

MEET DAISY: This 1927 Capitol Chev will be one of three featured vehicles from the 1920s on display at this year’s show and shine.

1920s classics at show and shine THE Australian National Show and Shine Euroa will celebrate this year’s theme of the 1920s with three classic vehicles from that decade being put on display.

A Capitol Chev named ‘Daisy’ from 1927 is one of the show and shine’s featured vehicles for this year.

Painted in an attractive pale yellow, she presents as being a beautiful Buttercup rather than a Daisy.

The car will form part of a special display at Centre Stage and arrives courtesy of Seymour’s Judi McGrath, who has owned Daisy since 2015.

The car’s claim to fame includes being one of the stars of the TV series set in the 1920s, ‘Carson’s Law’ which aired from 1982 to 1984.

Ms McGrath said the car was very well-travelled.

“As a curious side story, I bought an XJ40 (Jaguar) from Kyneton in 2018 and in talking to the seller, I found out he had owned Daisy in the 1990’s,” she said.

“He sold her to someone who drove her to Queensland.”

This model introduced several innovations at the time.

The accelerator pedal was introduced, as previous generations used a throttle located in the center of the steering column, along with the installation of a petrol gauge in the dashboard and a centrally located rear view mirror.

Available in eight body styles including two-door roadster and coupe, and

four-door sedan and tourer, the Capitol Chev is powered by a four-cylinder OHV 2.8L (171 cu in) engine, with a three-speed manual transmission.

There will also be a 1920s race car on display, an Austin 7 Monoposto Special, lovingly labelled ‘Lil Red Baron’ by owners Terry and Peter Cornelius of Corowa.

The Austin 7 was an economy car that was produced from 1923 until 1939 in the United Kingdom.

Many Austin 7s were rebuilt as ‘specials’ after the Second World War, including the first race car built

by Bruce McLaren, and the first Lotus, the Mark I. With this background, and a supply of Austin 7 parts, including a ‘rolling’ chassis just hanging around, Arthur Cornelius, together with sons Terry and Peter, decided that between them they could come up with Arthur’s long-time dream of having an Austin 7 special.

Cutting a long but very interesting story very short, the Cornelius Austin 7 Special racer was created in just six weeks, hand crafted by the Cornelius family and friends.

Terry Cornelius spoke about how it felt to build the car.

“We were filled with pride when announcers labelled it the racer that was produced by the factory in 1923,” he said.

“Actually, we met those descriptions with mixed emotions, as we felt that ours was considerably better looking.”

Over the years since its build, the little car has proven itself to be very capable and reliable as well as being upgraded in various areas of its performance.

It has been in the hands of several owners since its creation, but these days and for the last few years it has been owned by Peter, Terry and their good friend Peter Dowdle.

The third vehicle featured in the 1920s display is a 1929 Norton Motor Cycle, one of two Nortons being displayed by Euroa resident Garry MacDonald.

Also known as Model 18, the Norton is a British bike with an air-cooled single cylinder four stroke overhead valve engine with a single Amal carburettor and magneto ignition.

The single-cylinder Nortons have always had a reputation of being strong, durable motorcycles, resulting in many of these classic bikes being used in all forms of sporting events.

This particular motor cycle has a very significant contribution to local Euroa history, as it was originally owned by Garry’s father, Frank MacDonald, who did a mail run three days a week in the late 1940s and 1950s following his return to Australia after service in the RAAF during the Second World War. During this time, Mr MacDonald and the Norton (at times including a homemade side-car) did the mail run around Pranjip, Miepoll and Moglonemby and Riggs Creek.

LIL RED BARON: This hand-crafted 1920s Austin 7 race car will be on display for all to see at the Euroa Show and Shine.

IT was a wonderful afternoon at the first ‘Sund’y By the Sevens’ for 2022 this month, with entertainment provided by Greg Dudley and Rod Grant.

It had been worth the wait to see them perform together again, it was the perfect entertainment for a cold, wet day.

The Third Age Club thanks Greg and Rod for performing and hopes to see them again soon.

The club also wishes to thank all those who attended and a special thanks to those who helped set up the hall, clean up afterwards and provided the delicious goods for afternoon tea.

The June monthly lunch was held at Flam Sham, providing everyone with a nice hot meal with good company on a very cold and wet day.

The July lunch will be held at the Euroa Hotel on Thursday, July 14 at 12pm.

The cost will be $17.50 for a two-course meal and all members and seniors are welcome to attend.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Bring back the curved seat in Binney Street I REALLY don’t know who is responsible for the changes in Binney Street, but as a local I just want to say that I feel that taking away the curved seat is a great mistake.

Many people used it at all times of the day and it was attractive.

The children’s play area was I thought too cumbersome but a good idea, the pink shoes are questionable.

Will it take a tragedy to get action?

THE front page picture and following article in last week’s Gazette concerning dangerous roadside trees reinforces concerns held by our community on the Strathbogie Tableland regarding numerous dangerous trees that were identified to council some years ago.

What can only be described as minimalistic works have been carried out on these trees, but the danger is still there and continues to increase particularly in current weather conditions.

Will it need a fatality to goad council into being proactive in regard to dangerous trees?

We are looking to achieve a satisfactory outcome for our community rather than being bombarded with reasons to justify lack of action on council’s part.

Step into shoes of an MP for a day and win for your school MEMBER for Euroa and Nationals’ deputy leader Steph Ryan is encouraging local students who are passionate about their local community to enter the 2022 Parliament Prize competition.

Entries are now open for the Parliament Prize competition for Victorian students in three categories: Year 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

Students are invited to submit a video of themselves presenting a Member’s Statement they would make to Parliament if they were a Member of Parliament.

A Member’s Statement is an opportunity for MPs to make a brief statement in Parliament of no more than 90 seconds on matters they wish to bring to the attention of Parliament that are of interest or concern to them and the people of their electorate.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of what it’s like to take the concerns of their community to State Parliament,” Ms Ryan said.

“I regularly speak to students from our local schools so I know there are a lot of students who would perform brilliantly at such a task.”

WIN MONEY FOR YOURSELF AND SCHOOL: Students are being encouraged to participate in a competition where they make a statement to parliament.

Giving ratepayers a fair go during tougher times THE Victorian Labor Government is working to ensure that people struggling to pay their rates are not being driven further into debt or out of their homes.

Minister for local government Shaun Leane introduced legislation into Parliament last week which will support Victorian property owners by ensuring councils implement fairer financial hardship policies.

“We know that many Victorians are doing it tough and that’s why we are working to reform the rating system,” he said.

“Good hardship relief schemes strike a balance where the rate burden is shared while ensuring people in hardship are not driven further into debt or out of their homes.”

The Local Government Amendment (Rating Reform and Other Matters) Bill 2022 will explicitly define financial hardship and require early engagement from councils with ratepayers.

Councils will also no

longer be able to use debt collectors or pursue legal action - which can result in homes being sold to pay back debts to council - unless ratepayers refuse to engage and all other options have been exhausted.

During the pandemic many councils expanded their hardship policies to provide relief to those doing it tough and started engaging earlier with ratepayers who fall into debt this Bill aims to ensure that councils do not revert to past practices.

It comes following the release of the Local Government Rating System Review and the Ombudsman’s ‘Investigation into how local councils respond to ratepayers in financial hardship’ report, with recommendations relating to greater support for ratepayers in financial hardship.

The Ombudsman’s report found that people who were struggling to pay their rates were often met with debt collectors, high penalty interest and in some cases costly litigation.

This creates more stress and fear for those who are already struggling financially and or dealing with a range of compounding issues, including family violence and mental health.

The Bill will allow the Minister, in consultation with the Essential Services Commission, to set a maximum amount of interest levied on unpaid rates and charges, and Ministerial Guidelines to assist ratepayers experiencing financial hardship will be developed for councils to follow.

Councils will also be limited in using Magistrate’s Court orders for recovering unpaid rates in situations where rates or charges have not been paid for two years or more.

LIONS CLUB TURNS 30: In 1992 I covered the Charter night of the Seymour Goulburn Lions Club for the local paper.

Nick Palmer of the Violet Town Lions Club officiated, it was an all female club and I joined it later that year.

The Club are now celebrating their 30 years anniversary on June 18 to which I and John hope to attend and meet up with many Lions members that I shared service with over the years.

When I married John in October 2000 I tried to join the Euroa Lions Club but they did not allow female members then.

So I joined the Violet Town Lions Club and happily served with them for 18 months before forming the Lions Club of Nagambie and District Inc in 2003.

Which had to be a unisex club then.

I have always admired the work of the Lions and Rotary and Apex organisations.

Their volunteers serve their communities very well.

Sadly in many areas like Nagambie now, these clubs are folding due to lack of membership.

Nagambie’s Ronda Richards awarded Queen’s Birthday honour

By DIANE GRANT NAGAMBIE’S Ronda Richards received the Queen’s Birthday Honour of the Order of Australia Medal on Monday in recognition of her years of service in the community.

She is one of thousands of volunteers from all walks of life and every nationality provide cultural and community contributions on a daily basis to our churches, schools, community and sports groups, while balancing a family and business in some cases.

“We don’t do it for a reward,” she said.

“We do it because we have this urge to help our community as best as we can.”

Where would our country be without volunteers like Ronda?

People like her who give lifelong service to others need to be acknowledged.

Ronda has been in Nagambie for 47 years and she has achieved so much in that time for her church, local school and the many groups she has been involved in.

Ronda would like to say a special thank you to her husband John and daughters Lyn, Deb and Andrea for their continued support in all her endeavours while she balanced being a wife, mother, helping run the family business and her love of helping her community as a tireless volunteer.

Ronda Richards was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church until they combined with the Methodist Church to become the Uniting Church of Australia.

She followed that new pathway and attended the Chapel on the Lake until it was badly damaged by a truck in June 2003 and had to be demolished.

From then on she became

a member of the NagambieAvenel-Seymour Uniting Church (UC) when they merged in 2003 and now the Nagambie UC Connect Faith Community.

Mrs Richards has played an integral role in church ecumenical groups like the Prayer Options Unified for Rain (POUR) the Walk for Witness Good Friday services and the annual World Day of Prayer.

She also assisted in leading the catering for the Nagambie Community Christmas tea for

those who lived alone or were isolated for over eight years.

Earlier on she was involved with the Nagambie Primary School Council for 14 years and was a Strathbogie Shire Councillor from 2003-2008, serving her community efficiently and diligently.

Other groups that benefitted from her hard volunteer work were the Nagambie local sports clubs like the recreation reserve committee, netball club (life member), the tennis club and the swimming pool.

Her passion for golf has seen her honoured as a life member of the Nagambie Golf Club and she has served as Nagambie Golf Club secretary for 25 years, been the ladies captain and chair, secretary and treasurer and on the social committee; plus the Goulburn Valley Golf Associations Association’s delegate and Goulburn Valley Ladies Golf Association vice president and president for two years each.

Her golf club received a shire wide Australia day award a couple of years ago due to her and other player’s contributions to their club and community.

Congratulations Ronda from your community.

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR KIDS: Council will be adding children’s outdoor equipment in the open space area of Whroovale estate, north of Nagambie.

Children’s outdoor equipment coming to Nagambie RESIDENTS of the Whroovale estate north of Nagambie will be receiving children’s outdoor equipment to be placed in the open space area bordered by Kheminda Crescent and Jean Claude Avenue.

Council say they were able to get a greater understanding of what the community wanted in this open space by surveying local residents.

“Our Share Strathbogie site lit up when we put out the QR code directing people to our interactive engagement hub to receive their suggestions,” Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said.

“Overwhelmingly, most of the 112 people who responded to the survey suggested they wanted a fun area with children’s play equipment as well

as some green space and a small percentage wanted some fitness equipment.

“The plan now is to install an irrigation system through the site and at the same time we will be going to tender for a company to design and construct the play structures.”

The play equipment will be directed towards the three to eight year age group, and it is

expected that the equipment will be installed by the end of the year.

Also included in the plan will be shade sails and some park benches and picnic tables.

Rural Australians for Refugees joining together in a celebration of diversity AS part of Refugee Week, the Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) group in the Strathbogie Shire will be attending an event in Shepparton next week and are inviting anyone interested to join.

Every year since 1988, Refugee Week has been celebrated to raise awareness of the issues affecting refugees, both in Australia and around the world.

This year, the theme of Refugee Week is healing.

The importance of human

connections has been underscored by the pandemic and the occurrence of devastating floods and fire around Australia.

Such lessons can help us in so many ways in terms of how we behave towards one another.

RAR-Strathbogie Shire wants to share this healing journey with you, and are inviting people to travel to Shepparton with them to hear the incredible story of Thon Thon, a former refugee from South Sudan, and now a community

development officer with the Ethnic Council.

Afterwards, there will be a Syrian lunch at Nedal Kebabs while meeting members of the Ethnic Council and some young former refugees now completing their Masters degrees in social work.

The event will be held on Wednesday, June 22 and will go from 9am to 3pm.

A bus will leave from outside the U3A building in Kennedy Street, with 12 places available.

Rural doctors welcome new health minister THE Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) has welcomed the new minister for health, Mark Butler, saying they are looking forward to his delivery of key rural health initiatives.

RDAA president, Dr Megan Belot, said the progression of initiatives promised by Labor during the campaign is expected to be high on Minister Butler’s agenda.

“We congratulate Minister Butler on retaining the health portfolio, and we also congratulate the new Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Linda Burney, and look forward to working with her to support the health needs of rural and remote Indigenous communities,” Dr Belot said.

“We were very excited by Labor’s promise for $171 million in targeted rural health initiatives, and the further $970 million going into primary care.

“We need these to be progressed quickly to address the real and pressing problems affecting the health workforce right across rural and remote Australia.

“Minister Butler will also be responsible for convening the new Strengthening Medicare Taskforce, with a commitment for this taskforce to develop concrete recommendations to decrease the pressure on hospitals and improve patient access to general practice and after-hours GP access, patient affordability and management of chronic health conditions.

“We will be making contact with Minster Butler to ensure that RDAA has a seat at that ta-

Labor election commitments, through their own policy initiatives as well as matching those on offer from the Coalition include: • increasing Workforce Incentive Program (WIP) payments for medical practitioners who provide quality care to rural and remote communities (MMM 3-7); • increasing the number of junior doctors gaining critically important rural experience from 800 to 1000 each year; • 50 additional rural advanced skill training posts for Rural Generalists doctors; • expansion of the Single Em-

ployer Model which will make Rural Generalism more attractive as a career choice for junior doctors; • 20 more medical student places at James Cook University (JCU); • infrastructure grants to improve infection control and ventilation in general practices, and upgrading equipment and IT systems to support telehealth consultations; and • implementation of Voluntary Patient Enrolment (VPE) to allow GPs increased ability to provide flexible and personalised care to their patients, and a more proactive approach to managing patient care.

“RDAA is dedicated to making sure all the elements of these commitments are implemented and we look forward to working with Mr Butler towards achieving improved health outcomes

for the people in rural and remote communities,” Dr Belot said.

“We will also continue to push for the other initiatives flagged

by RDAA in our Election Platform, including rural consultant specialist services to be better supported, Medicare cuts to be reinstated and strategies to support partner employment and families of rural doctors to help them stay rural.

“We are concerned about Labor’s policy to extend the District of Priority Area (DPA) classification outside of rural areas, and will be discussing the potential effect of this on rural and remote health services.

“In his role as Minister for Aged Care we will also be looking to progress the need for a registered nurse to be on every shift, which also ties in with the Medicare Taskforce remit.”

Probus president shares details of outback tour PRESIDENT of the Probus Club Euroa Fred Jungwirth gave an interesting talk to Probus members about a trip he took on the Flinders Ranges Outback Autumn Tour, with his wife Bev. Photos of places visited and stopped for morning and afternoon teas, lunches, overnight accommodation were shown on a projector.

The 11-day tour stopped at several locations, including Mungo National Park, Flinders Ranges, Pyrenees Ranges, Donald, Wimmera-Mallee, the sea lake on southern shores and Lake Tyrrel, Victoria’s largest salt lake.

Local experts on the tour spoke about the Canadian Chaffey Brothers (George and William Benjamin) who arrived in Mildura in 1886 to establish the first irrigation system in Australia.

The tour also visited olive oil farm, ‘Varapodio Estate’, enjoying tastings before visiting ‘Orange World’, 50-acre working citrus property.

A visit to Lake Mungo, located within the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, gave the Jungwirths the ability to witness an area that has the long-

Fruit fly project wins top accolade THE Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly Area Wide Management Program has taken out a top accolade for its achievements in reducing the impact of fruit fly on the Australian horticultural industry.

The program featured at the Hort Connections national awards for excellence in Brisbane last week, receiving the Visy Industry Impact Award from a field of 16 industry candidates from across Australia.

Program governance group chairman Tony Siciliano said the award was an outstanding achievement and recognised the important work that has been achieved in protecting Australia’s $12 billion horticultural industry from the devasting impacts of fruit fly.

“The program’s coordinated and highly effective area wide management approach has resulted in positive outcomes for the region and has become a model of best practise which is being replicated in other areas,” Mr Siciliano said.

Program coordinator Ross Abberfield said the award independently assessed and recognised the program for implementing a system of technology and business practice outside of the industry norm, as part of the

program’s area wide management of fruit fly.

“The judges determined the program achieved a significant contribution to best practice and cost savings through the value chain,” Mr Abberfield said.

“They believe that we have delivered technology and practice that is not in common usage by industry, providing a commercial and competitive advantage, which is something we are extremely proud of.”

More than 3000 people attended the event, which is recognised as the premier event for the Australian horticultural industry, and cohosted by AUSVEG and the International Fresh Produce Association Australia-New Zealand (IFPA A-NZ).

The theme for Hort Connections 2022 - Growing Together - highlighted the importance for every sector of the horticulture industry coming together to build a stronger more resilient food system to feed local and international consumers.

The Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Program is supported by the Victorian Government along with Cobram and District Fruit Growers Association, Fruit Growers Victoria, Summerfruit Australia, Lions International and includes

the council areas of Moira, Greater Shepparton, Strathbogie, Campaspe and Berrigan.

The program has a strong and well established track record in its ability to make a difference to fruit fly control and horticultural outputs, also recently winning the Victorian Agriculture Innovation Award, Victorian Achievers Award and Australian Biosecurity Award.

Area wide management is central to the program’s success in protecting the region from the impacts of fruit fly.

Fruit fly control needs to be carried out by the whole community to be effective and relies on the program’s capacity to increase community awareness, education and engagement about fruit fly management.

Area wide management brings together community, industry and government to apply control and awareness measures across the whole region rather than focusing on isolated pockets.

The project was established in 2017 and has significantly strengthened the region’s protection against fruit fly through area wide management.

“Soil organic matter makes up a small component of the soil mass, yet it has an important role in the functioning of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil,” Ms Cann said.

“Soil organic carbon is a measure of the carbon contained within soil organic matter and increasing soil carbon levels can lead to better plant establishment and growth.”

Ms Cann said the original booklet was written by Agriculture Victoria in 2013 as part of a program to summarise the latest science on soil carbon, as a resource for Fertilizer Australia and their national Fertcare advisor training program.

“With the current renewed interest in soil carbon it was time for an update,” she said.

“Fertilizer Australia in partnership with the International Fertiliser Society also recently ran a series of webinars with expert speakers and had this

updated booklet available online is a timely resource for those keen to understand the latest science.”

AGRICULTURE Victoria is encouraging farmers to download a new online booklet to learn more about the latest soil carbon science.

The Soil Carbon Snapshot booklet is one of a number of tools being developed to support farmers to reduce their on-farm emissions, manage their climate risk and improve productivity.

Agriculture Victoria land health project leader Melissa Cann said there are many ways to increase soil carbon while also increasing productivity, water holding capacity and nutrient cycling.

“Increasing soil carbon will reduce input costs and produce wider natural resource management benefits,” Ms Cann said.

“If you are trying to better understand the fundamentals of soil carbon in agriculture, this is a great resource to start your journey.”

Record May flu cases prompt warning

AUSTRALIA has had its worst May on record when it comes to flu cases, prompting experts to warn this season will redefine what it means to be ready for the virus.

The national disease surveillance system reported about 65,770 confirmed influenza cases in May - more than double the month’s previous record, which was set in 2019.

Dr Jonathan Anderson,

an executive with pharmaceutical company Seqirus, said other countries would be looking to Australia to see how it dealt with the spike.

“Australia is in a unique position in that we are one of the first countries to face COVID and a simultaneous flu season that is similar to pre-COVID levels,” he told a BioMelbourne Network forum.

“It’s clear that the rest of

the world will be watching our flu season closely and learning from our successes or failures.”

As of June 5, the national surveillance system had this year received nearly 88,000 reports of flu cases - more than 47,800 of them, diagnosed in the previous fortnight.

The system was notified of 27 flu-related deaths in the year to date, and more than

730 people were reported as admitted to hospital because of influenza since April. Of those hospital admissions, about 6 per cent went directly to intensive care.

From mid-April, weekly confirmed caseloads were above the five-year average.

Dr Anderson said it was important Australia focused on innovative technology to help protect people from flu into the future.

Along with existing vaccines, experts were looking to new ones like a second generation of today’s mRNA, and cell-based vaccines.

Dr Felicia Pradera, a manager at research organisation Defence Materials Technology Centre, said Australia should take lessons from COVID-19 to ensure it reponded well to influenza.

Masses rally against gun violence in United States TENS of thousands of demonstrators have descended on Washington and rallies across the US to demand legislation aimed at curbing gun violence.

In the nation’s capital, organisers with March for Our Lives (MFOL) estimated 40,000 people assembled at the National Mall near the Washington Monument under occasional light rain on Saturday.

The gun safety group was founded by student survivors of the 2018 massacre at a Parkland, Florida, high school.

Protester Courtney Haggerty, 41, said the 2012 school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, when a gunman killed 26 people, mostly children, came one day after her daughter’s first birthday.

“It left me raw,” she said. “I can’t believe she’s going to be 11, and we’re still doing this.”

A gunman in Uvalde, Texas, killed 19 children and two teachers on May 24, 10 days after another gunman murdered 10 Black people in a Buffalo, New York, grocery store in a racist attack.

The shootings have added new urgency to the country’s ongoing debate over gun violence, though the prospects for federal legislation remain uncertain given staunch Republican opposition to any limits on firearms.

In recent weeks, a bipartisan group of Senate negotiators have vowed to hammer out a deal, though they have yet to reach an agreement.

NSW government commits to $1b fast-rail plan THE NSW government has backed a $1 billion rail upgrade between Sydney and the Central Coast that could pave the way for faster train services.

The state will work with the federal government on the upgrade, with $500 million to be set aside in June 21’s state budget, Premier Dominic Perrottet says.

In the run-up to May’s federal election, Labor pledged $500 million of Commonwealth funds to a scheme to link Sydney and Newcastle with fast rail services.

The NSW government announcement on Saturday, focused initially on the

Sydney-Central Coast link, will improve the Tuggerah-Wyong connection and include new electrified tracks, rail bridges over the Wyong River and station upgrades.

The pledge is subject to agreement with the federal government.

Mr Perrottet said planning for the project would start later this year and it represented preliminary work that would allow faster rail to operate on the lines with further major investment.

“You can’t build great cities without building significant transport infrastructure and we

think that this billion dollars from the state and federal government will lay that foundation and set up further investments as we move forward,” he said.

Alleged crime figure extradited to Aust A CHINESE-BRITISH man alleged to be a senior crime syndicate member has been extradited from Thailand accused of conspiring to traffic illegal drugs into Australia.

Australian Federal Police along with Royal Thai Police extradited the 66-yearold from Bangkok to Melbourne on Saturday.

The AFP will allege the man was part of a conspiracy to traffic five separate quantities of methamphetamine (or derivatives of the drug) totalling 40kg over a number of months in 2012.

They say he is a senior criminal associate of a transnational drug cartel.

The man was arrested in his Bangkok apartment in October 2020 by Thai authorities carrying out an arrest warrant

based on charges to be laid in Australia.

The dual national has appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court facing a charge of conspiracy to traffic a commercial quantity of a controlled drug of which the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Krissy Barrett says his extradition is part of a long-running investigation into a prolific transnational organised crime syndicate.

“The extradition of someone we allege to be high on the pecking order of this serious criminal syndicate is a significant milestone for the AFP,” she said on Sunday.

“It shows the AFP and its partners remain one step ahead in working tirelessly to keep our community safe”.

Euroa Past Players and Supporters Day set to go ahead AFTER two years of cancellations and false starts, Euroa Football Netball Club are now able to gather to celebrate the 2022 Past Players and Supporters Day and Premierships Reunion.

Taking place on Saturday, June 18 during our home match against Rochester, the club will get together to toast the 50th and 30th anniversary of Senior football Premiership victories in 1970, 1971 and 1990, along with the 25th anniversary of the Reserves Premiership victory over Echuca in 1997.

We look forward to not only reminiscing about the great victories of years gone by, but also coming together to remember and pay our respects to old friends and

teammates who are sadly no longer with us.

Euroa also look forward to celebrating the career of Craig Bamford, who has returned to reserves football after having been an outstandingly young member of the victorious 1997 reserves premiership time, 25 years later.

Meeting at half-time of the senior game to hear from members of the premiership teams, Euroa Football Netball Club not only invite but are greatly looking forward to seeing everyone at the Memorial Oval this Saturday.

Benalla squash club moves into finals series THE final round of competition was last week, leaving the way for the finals series now.

While this week will see the semi-finals, next week will be the preliminary finals of both sections one and two on Monday night and the Grand Final on Friday night.

As an added bonus, before the Grand Final matches begin there will be a visit from a professional coach and some elite junior squash players.

Raj Nanda is Australia’s National Juniors Coach and former professional squash player reaching number 38 in the world.

There will be free coaching sessions from Raj and

exhibition games with some of Victoria’s best junior players to show our juniors how it’s done.

There will also be a free sausage sizzle for the kids afterwards.

So any kids that want some coaching or anybody that wants to watch some good squash, all are welcome.

Benalla Gun Club makes generous donation to Euroa club THE Euroa Clay Target Club conducted a Championship Shoot in the name of the Benalla Gun Club on Sunday, June 12.

The Benalla Gun Club was one of the North East Zone’s member clubs with a long history of clay target competition.

Unfortunately that club lost its shooting grounds due to the rapidly growing city of Benalla making it impossible to continue at that venue.

With no ability to continue the club due to a lack of members, the discussion was made to wind up the club.

In March last year the Benalla Gun Club Committee made the very welcome donation of $15,000 to the Euroa Clay Target Club.

In recognition of this welcome windfall, the Euroa Club promised to give naming rights to the Championship competition held this Sunday.

Much to Euroa’s surprise, the Benalla club donated a further $10,000 which along with the first donation, is earmarked for the installation of a complete solar system able to replace the need for continuous running of the club’s generator.

The overall champion for the day was local shooter Craig Asquith who shot a credible 118/125 in very challenging conditions.

Individual Championship winners were Les Comensoli from the Walmer club in the Point Score event.

Carl Comensoli from the Cohuna Club took out the Single Barrel and Alexandra’s Geoff McClure shot 37/37 to win the Double Barrel.

Veteran golfers soldier on WE had two attempts to stage our event at Mooroopna Golf Club but were thwarted by the weather on both occasions.

The forecast weather for the original date of May 30 was wet and chilly and your committee had no hesitation in postponing the event to the following Monday, June 6.

The management and grounds staff at Mooroopna Golf Club did all they could to help us stage the event, but unfortunately the rain on the preceding day and into the evening exceeded the forecast and our expectations.

Upon examination of the course early on Monday morning it was evident that any traffic by motorised carts would adversely affect the fairways and jeopardise the longer term amenity of the golf course.

As a large percentage of our membership do rely on motorised carts, the tough decision to cancel the event was made.

We attempted to contact as many travellers as possible and were pleased that the Deni travellers were able to secure a game of golf elsewhere near the half-way point.

A number of players that completed the journey to Mooroopna and were prepared to walk the course enjoyed a day of social golf.

Although cool there was little wind, so no extra chill factor.

Any member of a golf club in Australia, who is over 55 years of age can join the G.V. Veteran Golfers Association.

Our next regular event will be at Numurkah Golf Club, on Monday, 20 June, 9.30am assembly, 10am tee.

Euroa netballers turn it on in undesirable weather conditions GVFNL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE IN the wet, cold conditions the A grade girls were not only keen to for a win, but also looking to improve their percentage.

Unfortunately, the conditions were going to make it tough.

Mansfield started with confidence and the first few goals went with the centre pass, but it wasn’t long before the Euroa defensive pressure throughout the court forced Mansfield errors.

Euroa finished the quarter with a six goal lead.

Kellie Davidson started the second quarter on fire with touches and intercepts throughout the court.

The Euroa defence of Bridget Hill and Tylah Marchbank were teaming well, creating turnovers and being rewarded with accurate goaling.

The third quarter saw Mansfield tighten up their defence and Euroa had to be patient to work the ball into the ring as goals were proving a bit more difficult to obtain.

The Euroa girls went into the last quarter with confidence, having a 17 goal lead in these conditions was going to be tough to beat.

With the defence continuing to work well together they were picking off balls aplenty.

Karly Wappett was finding space in the ring and was having no trouble converting.

Whilst the girls did not get the percentage they probably needed to improve their position on the ladder, it was a good win in difficult conditions.

Meg Walker, Hannah Kubeil, Chloe Salter, Laura Frewen and Molly Redfern all willingly agreed to don the bibs for another game, literally minutes after their own game had finished.

The first quarter was a tough slog for defenders Alita White and Mary Frewen who were under the pump from the very first whistle.

Both girls handled the relentless pressure extremely well, never giving up and using Kalarni Anderson, Hannah Kubeil and Laura Frewen to move the ball out of defence and down the court whenever the chance arose.

Chloe Salter, Meg Walker and Holly Johnson moved well, making space around the tight Mansfield midcourt and feeding the ball into goalers Maddi Murray and Molly Redfern.

The Magpie goalers made the most of the limited opportunities they got, accurately converting team efforts onto the scoreboard.

At least it didn’t snow.

Best players awarded by the Coach: Molly Redfern, Hannah Kubeil, Maddi Murray Mansfield 69 Euroa 27 UNDER 17 THERE is no denying it, a trip to Mansfield on Snow Opening weekend on a bitterly cold day is truly the stuff of dreams.

The U17 Magpies made their way to the Eagles’ Nest on Saturday, ready to do battle with Mansfield, a team they had experienced success against in the first round of the season.

The Eagles got off to a flying start, the home ground advantage evident in the way they handled the tricky conditions, and the fact that their legs were not purple from the cold when the first whistle blew.

Meg Walker, Lily Meehan, Hannah Kubeil and Abby Harrison kept warm with their efforts to stem the easy flow of Mansfield through the midcourt.

The girls stuck tight to their opponents, capitalising on stray balls and intercepting loose passes whenever possible.

Millie Watson, Laura Frewen and Chloe Salter worked well together, combining their defend-

ing efforts to try and minimise the damage being caused by the Eagles’ very tall and accurate goal shooter.

Deflecting rebounds and holding tight against their opponents resulted in a number of turnovers to the Magpies.

Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter had a fabulous day in the Magpie goal ring, both moving well and shooting with precision.

With every game these two girls play together, the more seamless their teamwork becomes.

It was an entertaining game of netball to watch, and one which the Magpies had a number of opportunities to steal. However, even as the game progressed and the scores fluctuated, Euroa were not, despite their obvious desire, able to catch the seven goal deficit from the first quarter.

The girls started well, quickly getting the ball to the goal circle and seeing Ruby Watson shoot the first goal of the day.

Issy Smith and Ruby were combining beautifully in the goals.

All the girls were sticking tight to their opponents.

This quarter was very evenly matched seeing Euroa 7-6 down at quarter time.

Euroa started strong going into the second quarter.

There was great defensive play

by Tess Walker, who was sticking to her player like gum on your shoe.

Irish Anderson, Marnie Salter and Scarlett Trotter lifted in the mid court, moving the ball well which helped to give Euroa the upper hand in the quarter.

All the girls combined well, resulting in a 16-11 lead at the half time break.

The third quarter started with Ruby coming off after a fall.

This seemed to throw the Euroa girls a little, but they eventually settled.

Ella Hill did a great job coming onto the court to replace Ruby.

Even though Maggie Pittock was on the bench this quarter, her positivity and encouragement to her fellow teammates didn’t go unnoticed.

Mansfield regained some momentum, but Euroa were still 2021 up at the end of the quarter.

The last quarter wasn’t the best part of the game for the Euroa girls.

Ruby returned to the court, thanks to the skill and expertise of Euroa’s medical staff.

Maggie and Oakley gave it their all in defence.

All the girls tried their hardest but Mansfield were ultimately too strong, grabbing a hard fought win.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB Ladies Results Wednesday 8th June THERE were seven players playing in the third round of the Social Club Championships and for the Monthly Medal.

The winner of A, B & C grades and the winner of the Monthly Medal was Moz Fowler with 81 net.

The 9 hole winner was Maureen King with 39 net.

There were no successful N/P. 18 hole balls went to Moz 81 net and Annette Mills 84 net.

9 hole balls went to sureness 39 net and Moz 40 net.

There were 19 players and the winner with 37.5 net was Dave Fullager.

There were no N/P winners.

Visiting golfers showed the locals how it’s done by walking away with a win and runners up award in Sunday’s stableford event, once again the course played long with precision ball striking required for each and every shot.

Scott Gilchrist from the Hidden Valley golf club was the winner with 37 points.

Going round with three others from Hidden Valley Gilly showed his mates how to get the job done.

Runner up was Don Bubeck of the Euroa golf club.

Don has been a visitor many times and knows the

Nagambie course well a crafty 36 points was posted.

The best of the local brigade was Peter Lawrence knocking out 36 points and finishing third on count back.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Roberts blasting his way onto the third, Jeremy Ezard blistering a six iron onto the 8th, Simon Craig hitting the front of the 13th and ‘The Don’ in the thick of all the action taking home the 16th.

Next week’s golf is a Par event with B. Cryer on office duty and J. Mills in the bar.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

100ml of rain fell in the area, consequently no one ventured out.

Conditions were better on Saturday 11 though still on the chilly side, but it is Winter.

26 played including visitors from Euroa, Sandringham and Howlong took cards to play stableford the final round of the Wally Dunn Trophy.

Ladies winner with 30 points was Kerry Hewlett, Men’s winner with36 points was Phil Rafferty.

Lineballs were won by Shae Van der Schoor with 32 points, John Moore also with 32 points, Chris Bennett 31 points, and Greg Roberts with 28 points.

The Ladies winner for the trophy was Kerry Hewlett , and the men’s winner was

Greg Roberts.

Congratulations to them both.

Nearest the pins: 4th Peter Phillips, 8th John Moore, 15th Chris Bennett, 17th Kristen Moore.

Straightest drive was again won by Graeme Carnegie who has been making a habit of winning.

Ladies drive and pitch to that girl Kerry Hewlett.

Men’s drive and pitch winner was Peter Phillips.

Boy were we all thankful when arriving back to the Club House to be greeted by Shae Van der Schoor with a piping hot Pumpkin Soup.

LONGWOOD INDOOR BOWLS CLUB THERE was a good crowd again this week, some excellent bowling was seen.

After two competitive games the winners were Coral Cox, Jean Hamilton and George.

Another excellent supper was served; it is great to see Coral enjoying her bowls.

Strong team win by the Euroa reserves against Mansfield Eagles RESERVES TRAVELLING to Mansfield and not being sure what the conditions would be like it was going to be a tough chal-lenge for our reserves team as we took on the top of the table Mansfield team.

The Mansfield football club always come to play and always give a strong contest.

To the credit of our reserves team, they were quickly out of the blocks winning the ball from the centre allowing our team to hit the scoreboard and to take the lead initially and to hold the lead from the start to the final siren.

Our reserves took to the field with a full squad of twenty-two players which is a big help when the game was played in heavy conditions against the big bodies of the opposition.

The game was to become a very physical one as Mansfield players had big bodies and always enjoyed the contest. To the credit of our team they matched it with the opposition working well as a team which allowed our team to always be in control of the game.

As the game commenced the players were met with light misty rain which made it difficult to handle the ball but it did not stop the quality of the skills as it was a good game of reserves football enjoyed by the supporters.

Our reserves team has a good mix of players with older players and a number among the younger group and they all worked well together encouraging each other.

Our reserves had good players over the ground with Zac Gleeson leading the way in the midfield accumulating many possessions in the first half of the game.

The rucks, led by Hudson Ramsden, worked hard to give the onballers first use through Craig Bamford and Bran-don Ebert assisted by Peter Cairns and Lachlan Cooke on the wings.

The forwards, lead by Nick Brodie, Robbie Wilson, Klay Giovannini and Harrison Lane we’re good targets for the team.

Matthew Ivill was a very good player for the team giving hardness at the contest taking many marks around the ground with a number of saving marks in the last quarter when the Mansfield team were making their final efforts in the forward line.

By NICHOLAS McCABE ON a quest to consecutive victories, the Magpies ventured to arctic-like Mansfield against a

competitive Eagles outfit.

Early in the first quarter the eagles got on top kicking the first two majors of the morning before the Magpies turned the tide, replying with two unanswered goals of their own led by Fletcher Paul.

This trend continued throughout the day; however a series of undisciplined actions and a failure to capitalise on the scoreboard saw Mansfield kick away at the main break.

Ryan Hill was instrumental around the contest, his bullock strength on full display.

Euroa dominated the third quarter, controlling all of the play but following the tale of the day could not convert between the big sticks kicking 2.6 for the quarter to Mansfield’s 3.0.

As a result, Mansfield held a 33-point lead at the final change however the Euroa camp remained optimistic that a comeback was on the cards.

Once again Charlie Watson and Nic Hill were playing outstanding games across half back, rebounding the play forward.

Local star signs to Hawthorn AFLW LOCAL footballer Tamara Smith has finally signed with Hawthorn after being overlooked in a series of drafts.

Smith has earned her place in the highest level of the sport, ranking first in the VFL league for total tackles (123), sixth for total kicks (189) and eighth for total disposals (252) over 11 games for Geelong this season.

Smith was also recently named the under 13 allstars MVP in their match against the NAB AFLW academy, coming in with a total of 19 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances.

Hawthorn are thrilled to have signed such a talented young player, Hawthorn AFLW list manager Mitchell Cashion said “Tamara’s pressure around the ball is elite and she is tough and competitive”.

“She is also clearly the best tackler in the VFLW competition and she has a point to prove at this level”.

Smith played football for Euroa Football Netball club all through her junior career, and attended Euroa Secondary College.

Chilly alpine blast can’t hold Euroa back GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS A LONG weekend of very cold conditions greeted the Euroa faithful as they all made their way across to Mansfield for the round nine set of games.

The senior football side welcomed back to the fold Erish Uthayakumar and Jack Hellier.

The game began in expected cold and wet conditions with the players looking to maintain momentum built over the last six matches.

Jacob Gleeson was his explosive self out of the middle, combining well with Jayden Gleeson and Jack Hellier in bringing the ball into the Euroa forward line repeatedly.

This meant Jack McKernan was giving the Mansfield backline huge headaches as he calmly slotted goals from either boundary line throughout the match - his superb kicking technique on full display.

Ben Giobbi - five goals - also proved to be a game-changer as his brute strength was on display yet again.

The added dimension he brings to the team when he is playing up forward is very exciting indeed.

Adam Giobbi was directing traffic and taking marks like it was a dryweather day as his control of the

Euroa backline meant the likes of Nate Trotter, Dan Garside and Marcus Varley were able to run off and create much opportunity further up the ground.

Andrew Smith was back to his best in the ruck with some excellent support from the likes of Ben Bath.

A 10-goal plus win bought smiles to the coaching staff as the Magpies asserted their authority on the game.

This brings the team into the top two of the current GVL ladder at the half-way point of the season.

With the past players day on Saturday, June 18 against Rochester and a number of premiership reunions taking place on the day it is sure to be another great opportunity for everyone to get down to Memorial Oval.
