THE Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has again raised the need to secure the long-term future of Euroa Health through recurrent funding from the Victorian Government.

Speaking from parliament last week, Ms Cleeland outlined the difficulties facing similar regional health services.

“Our state was once home to more than 40 community hospitals, with now just a handful left,” Ms Cleeland said.

“With the decline of private health insurance,

veterans care and an ageing population, Euroa Health is operating at a significant deficit every financial year.”

Ms Cleeland outlined the critical role Euroa Health played in the region and supporting Goulburn Valley healthcare.

“Strathbogie remains the only local government area in Victoria that has no publicly funded hospital,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This crucial local health service does so much to take the strain off

GV Health while serving the community with high standard aged and acute care services.

“With our health system in such a dire state through bloated waitlists and a 000 system in crisis, it is crucial regional Victorians have local, accessible and highquality health care - exactly what Euroa Health provides.”

Ms Cleeland thanked previous Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter for her advocacy on behalf of the hospital.

“Last year a petition was tabled bearing more than 1500 signatures collected in a little over a week calling for the government to financially support Euroa Health,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It is clear the community is right behind their hospital.

“This petition was driven by outgoing CEO Cherree Hunter, who in her time in the role contributed so much to the community.

“The region thanks you for your service, and we wish you well for the future.”

The Department of Health has begun discussions with Euroa Health after years of requests from representatives and the community.

“My predecessor Steph Ryan raised the need for recurrent public funding with multiple ministers,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I am glad to hear the Department of Health is now engaging constructively with Euroa Health, and I look forward to the positive news in the future.”

GV Health maternity service boost GOULBURN Valley Health has announced a range of changes for its maternity services, including upgraded facilities, accommodation for partners to stay during the postnatal period, improved continuity of care and provision for future water birth and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services.

In 2022 GV Health’s maternity team undertook a period of community consultation including a community forum, online survey and meetings with community groups.

Maternity Services manager Carmel Brophy said the maternity team took the feedback they received very seriously.

“A decline in birth numbers and the redevelopment of our unit prompted our team to seek community consultation on ways to improve our service provision to our families in our region,” she said.

“We wanted to work with families to support them through their pregnancies and birth journeys, with the aim of providing continuity of care models within the core antenatal period to both low and high-risk women, collaborating with both midwives and obstetricians.”

Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) clinical coordinator, Zoe Andrus, said one of the most important pieces of

information that came from that consultation was the need to allow a support person to stay overnight with mother and baby.

“It’s not just the mum that’s had the baby, it’s a family unit,” Mrs Andrus said.

“Partners are very much more involved now; it’s their child as well so they need to be involved in that initial care.”

GV Health’s maternity services team took this feedback on board and a support person is now warmly invited to stay overnight at GV Health through the postpartum period.

Kia and Nick Sheldon from Moama welcomed their son Alvy into the world on February 14 and were transferred to GV Health after Alvy was placed in special care.

“It was a very stressful time and we were worried about where Nick would stay while we were in hospital,” Mrs Sheldon said.

“But luckily the maternity ward had just started to offer partners to stay, and Nick was the first one. “This was a huge relief and honestly saved us all so much stress and anxiety over the five days.

Nats MP: New health plan must give freedom of choice THE State Government must allow people to opt out of having their private health records automatically shared on a central database, Northern Victoria MP Gaelle Broad has told Parliament.

Ms Broad said people should have freedom of choice on whether their health information was automatically accessible to all public health professionals.

She said it was clear the Health Legislation Amendment (Information Sharing) Bill should be amended.

“While we all want to help our frontline health workers as much as possible, this Bill has some flaws which need to be ironed out,” she said.

Ms Broad said the plan could have major implications for victims of crimes such as domestic violence, or people with highly sensitive health information such as mental health issues or family planning, where privacy is vitally important.

“The Nationals are asking that the Bill be amended to give people the choice as to whether they want their information included

“By contrast, the national My Health Record allows

people to opt out and about 10 per cent of Australians chose to do so,” Ms Broad said.

The AMA is generally supportive, however, the Law Institute of Victoria wants the government to withdraw the bill and engage in greater consultation over privacy concerns.

Ms Broad said the Nationals were seeking two amendments in the Upper House; to include an optout provision; and to remove an FOI exemption.

“Victorians should be able to choose if they want their private information to be shared in this manner,” she said.

Looking forward, GV Health’s maternity team is now in the process of developing new postnatal education services and preparing for the future provision of public IVF services.

Clinical director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Associate Professor Sinead Barry, said IVF services will offered in collaboration with the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.

“Shepparton is going to be one of the hospitals that will supply that satellite service to local women,” Assoc Prof Barry said.

She said this addition to the community would relieve the stress of those having to travel to Melbourne for intensive appointments.

“We have lots of really exciting changes happening and we’re trying to strengthen our relationship with the Royal Women’s Hospital and get more specialists to come with specialty expertise, to cut down that travel to Melbourne,” she said.

Another chapter turns for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge CHILDREN can go ‘wild about reading’, as they embark on the annual Premiers’ Reading Challenge for another year.

Last Thursday, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the 2023 Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open.

“I encourage children and students to pick up a book and be transported into wild new worlds, learn exciting new things and to feel inspired by their own imaginations,” Ms Symes said.

The challenge supports students and families to get behind the initiative that promotes the importance of reading for children and students from early childhood to Year 10, while encouraging families to be more involved with supporting reading at home.

This year’s theme is ‘wild about reading’ with the accompanying artwork designed by Kate Isobel Scott, a talented Victorian-based illustrator known for her colourful, quirky and endearing hand-made characters.

“I’m in a position I can help support more research into young victim stroke research,” he said.

“I can help promote increased social inclusion.

“I can help to break down the perception of disability and often the limited mentality people have about this.

“I also want to challenge myself to see ‘if I can’.

“Increasing social inclusion is very important to me.

“I dislike the word ‘disabled’ and want to emphasise that anyone can achieve their own goals.

“They’re not disabled, they are in many different ways abled.

“As I progress on this massive challenge I plan to stop along the way wherever people will listen, such as schools, town halls and libraries to talk to people.

“To share my story, and grow support and increase education about those afflicted by a stroke, and the challenges of low social exclusion.”

Mr Quick will depart from Melbourne on March 24, resuming his journey.

Arriving in Euroa on March 27, he is planning a stop at one of the local pubs and chatting with interested locals.

Joyful murals with meaning painted at Yiiro THE very talented Aimee McCartney from Luruk-in painted some incredible murals on the Euroa Community Garden’s bushfood wicking beds last weekend.

Aimee is a proud Taungurung, Wotjobaluk, Wemba Wemba and Boon Wurrung woman and created murals that tell stories about Taungurung Country and culture and our community.

Aimee met with some of the community last Sunday to share more about the murals and their meaning.

The orange mural is connecting us to Country and the sun which is critical for growth and life.

The blue mural is connecting us to our waterways, which was an important gathering place for First Nations people, wildlife and flora including along the Seven and Castle creeks.

The red mural is connecting us to community and each other.

These murals all tell a wonderful story and Aimee worked with local Elders to come up with them.

AS part of his inspiring journey to reach the four furthest parts of the country, stroke survivor Tommy Quick will be stopping in Euroa later this month.

Mr Quick’s journey is an incredible story of overcoming adversity.

After suffering a stroke at just 12 years old, he has continually persevered to achieve sensational accomplishments.

Beyond relearning how to walk, talk and eat again after his stroke, Mr Quick walked the Kokoda Trail in 2014 and more recently set himself the challenge of reaching the four furthest points of Australia on a recumbent trike.

This trip, beginning in 2021, is a 9000km trip to raise funds for stroke support services and raise awareness about strokes in young people.

While part-way through his most recent adventure in November 2021, Mr Quick was struck by a vehicle in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, leaving him with multiple broken bones and causing the trip to be postponed while he recovered.

It should be no surprise that Mr Quick responded to the accident in his typical fashion, bouncing back and setting a 2023 return date to continue his “4-points” adventure.

He is now about to get back on his trike and resume the trip, with a stop in Euroa planned for March 27 and 28.

“We learned a lot about Taungurung culture and feel so lucky that we have some art that everyone can enjoy and learn more about First Nations culture in Euroa.

“We think the colours bring a new life to the space and hope the three murals will bring joy to people of Euroa.

“After all, Yiiro means joyful place in Taungurung language and we asked Aimee to interpret joy into her designs which we can definitely see with the colours!

“When we developed our strategic plan, we heard from our community that they want more public art and spaces to connect.

“We are so excited to bring this to life for and with our community.”

Women from across Strathbogie Shire came together to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 at ‘The Falls’ in Longwood East.

The free community event was organised by Council and featured three amazing guest speakers – Mayor Cr Laura Binks, founder of the Seven Sisters festival Dr Lauren Woodman and The Falls head gardener Marcelle Stoove.

Cr Binks told the crowd International Women’s Day was an opportunity to pause and draw inspiration from all those who forged the way for women and children to be recognised mutually, fairly and lawfully, and for future generations to come.

Council Meeting The next meeting of Strathbogie Shire Council will be held on Tuesday, March 21 2023, from 6pm at the Euroa Community Conference Centre, 1b Bury Street, Euroa.

The gallery will be open to the public.

The meeting will also be livestreamed at www.strathbogie.vic.gov.au and we encourage community members to watch the meeting via this option.

EOI to create public artwork in Euroa We’re calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced artists to create a public artwork in Euroa. The call for EOIs follows Council’s adoption of a Public Art Policy in September 2022, the allocation of $20,000 through the Pitch My Project initiative and an engagement process to understand the community’s preferences on the type and location of public art in our townships. A freestanding sculptural work is being sought for this commission. The commission also includes the design, structural engineering, fabrication and installation of all components of the permanent public artwork.

A BEAUTIFUL garden setting provided the backdrop for Strathbogie Shire Council’s International Women’s Day event on Wednesday, March 8.

The incredible ‘The Falls’ at Longwood East was generously opened up for the free community event which featured three amazing guest speakers.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks hosted the event and opened up proceedings by addressing the audience.

Cr Binks said International Women’s Day was an opportunity to pause and draw inspiration from all those who forged the way for women and children to be recognised mutually, fairly and lawfully, and for future generations to come.

She spoke about her role as Mayor and reflected on female leadership as well as the challenges and difficulties women face including pay disparities and family violence.

“I am proud to be Strathbogie Shire Council’s second female Mayor alongside our first female chief executive officer Julie Salomon, and a team of five strong executive leaders, of which four are women,” Cr Binks said.

“Women are transformation leaders.

“We have a great balance of professional and personal leadership skills.

Cr Binks welcomed another fearless female leader - Dr Lauren Woodman - who founded the world’s largest women’s wellness festival Seven Sisters at just 24 years old.

Dr Woodman took guests on a spiritual journey with their fellow peers where they were encouraged to discuss what empowerment meant for them.

“I had the privilege of attending the Seven Sisters Festival with some women dear to my heart and life in March 2020, between black summer fires and COVID lockdowns and long before standing for council, let alone Mayor, was in the sphere of possibilities,” Cr Binks said.

This was followed by an interesting talk from The

Falls head gardener Marcelle Stoove who spoke about her career in maledominated industries, having previously worked as a truck driver in the Kimberleys.

She then explained the history of the garden and guests were taken on tours throughout the grounds with Marcelle and fellow garden staff.

“It was so interesting to hear all about the history and development of this incredible garden nestled into the foothills of the glorious Strathbogie Ranges from Marcelle who generously shared her wisdom and time with us,” Cr Binks said.

The evening was capped off with a screening at the Euroa Community Cinema featuring Hidden Figures [PG] - the true story of three women who worked for NASA.

EOI to create a public artwork STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced artists to create a public artwork in Euroa.

The call for EOIs follows council’s adoption of a Public Art Policy in September 2022, the allocation of $20,000 through the Pitch My Project initiative and an engagement process to understand the community’s preferences on the type and location of public art in our townships.

Mayor Laura Binks said the feedback from the community engagement was hugely positive.

“Overall we heard - make art happen,” Cr Binks said.

“Specifically, there was significant support for bird sculptures but, we were also told to mix it up, surprise us embrace our region, embrace Taungurung storytelling through art and pay tribute to our history and identity.

“Council is excited to see the outcomes of this work - in the form of a sculpture for Euroa.”

A freestanding sculptural work is being sought for this commission.

The commission also includes the design, structural engineering, fabrication and installation of all components of the permanent public artwork.

GET INVOLVED: Strathbogie Shire Council is asking for expressions of interest from experienced artists to create a public artwork for Euroa.

The sculpture is intended to have a significant lifespan (at least 20 years).

It may consist of any material suited to permanent outdoor installation and suitability to all weather.

It should also require minimal maintenance across its lifespan.

“It is intended that the sculpture will be placed prominently in Euroa and the

proposed location is Seven’s Creek Park,” she said.

“Public art commissions will be assessed against the criteria outlined in council’s Public Art Policy and this information can be found on our website at www. strathbogie.vic.gov.au.

“Depending on the number of proposals received, the community may have the opportunity to vote on shortlisted proposals, if there are several eligible proposals, which equally address the six criteria.”

The Expression of Interest period opened on Friday, March 3 and closes at 5pm on Friday, March 31.

Following this there will be a two-week review period and applicants will be notified of the outcome by April 14.

Installation must be complete by June 30, 2023.

Feathers ruffled during native bird hunting inquiry debate

By STEVE KELLY AN inquiry into Native Bird Hunting in Victoria will be carried out this year after it received the support from upper house MPs, 20 votes to 15.

It follows the 2023 duck hunting season having been scaled back to five weeks with a four bird bag limit - in what some commentators say will be the last ever in Victoria.

The topic was hotly debated, with upper house deputy leader Lizzie Blandthorn introducing the proposed

inquiry and stating “native water bird hunting should be banned”.

“An inquiry gives everybody the opportunity to voice their opinions,” she said.

Eastern Victoria MP Melina Bath labelled the inquiry as “an absolute charade” and described Ms Blandthorn’s address as a speech on “the banning, the cessation of duck hunting in Victoria”.

“Why don’t we just cut to the chase and bring in the legislation?” Ms Bath asked.

“You may as well pro-

vide your resignation to the Labor Party and join the Animal Justice Party (AJP), because what we have just heard is the total cessation of all livestock, all management of animals, and birds for that matter, and this is a foregone conclusion from your point.”

AJP MP for Northern Victoria, Georgie Purcell, told parliament that for 10 years she has joined volunteers on the wetlands.

“This year will be my 11th and I hope it will be my last,” she said.

“The behaviour we have

all seen is atrocious.

“There is nothing that will ever let us forget the opening weekend of the duck shooting season in 2017.

“It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my entire life.

“I spent sunrise to sunset trudging across the Koorangie marshes in Kerang.

“We covered kilometres but continuously had to make our way back because our pillowcases, backpacks and even our pockets were full of dead

and dying birds.”

Liberal MP for Western Victoria, Bev McArthur, accused Ms Blandthorn, Ms Purcell and the Greens MPs for not doing anything practical and said “all you do is go out and protest”.

“Minister, I bet you have never been out trying to save the wetlands or develop them,” Ms McArthur said.

“The benefit to the community and the birdlife via scientific research is enormous.

“They support the breeding ground of 230 bird spe-

cies, of which only seven, or three per cent, are listed for hunting.”

The select committee will consist of three Legislative Council MPs from the government, three from the opposition and three from the crossbench, with a report to be tabled by August 31.

Areas of inquiry will include the operation of the annual native bird hunting seasons; arrangements in other Australian jurisdictions; their environmental sustainability and impact on amenity; and their social and economic impact.

Euroa Action Group explores the Labyrinth with workshop THE Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) conducted a workshop on labyrinths with Suzie Bates.

Members learned about the history of labyrinths, and the meditative aspects of it.

The Classical Labyrinth pattern dates back as far as 4,000 years and has been found etched in stone, on ancient coins and on the ground in various forms in many countries throughout this time.

There is an inherit mystery that surrounds the Labyrinth and it’s purpose, it is a fascinating example of sacred geometry that is most widely used today for walking meditation.

Labyrinths can be used for personal and group work as well as for fun and ceremony (such as to mark the seasons or a gathering at a community garden) .

A Labyrinth has a meandering path that leads to it’s centre.

Where a maze is designed to cause confusion the Labyrinth has a profound calming effect for many, it can also be lots of fun particularly for children.

LABYRINTH: The Euroa Community Action Group held a workshop to learn about the history of labyrinths, and the meditative aspects of one.

Interested residents can check out the group’s labyrinth and walk it any time at Yiiro Community Garden.

The group will continue to evolve this labyrinth over time, and are hoping to make a large scale one that is wheelchair accessible.

Bowerbird name chimes in well for health building EUROA Health board of management is pleased to announce there has been a unanimous decision that the current Memory Support Unit located inside GraniteHill will become a 15bed unit known as “Bowerbird”.

The name comes as a dedication to the Bowerbird Op Shop in Binney Street, of which the proceeds are directed to Euroa Health to support purchases of equipment and needs of the entire facility at Euroa Health, which last year to June 2022 saw sales increase by 40 per cent to $295,000.

Interim chief executive officer Melissa Seymour said the name reflected the values and generosity of the local community.

“This is a true reflection of the wider community’s contribution to Euroa Health through the local Op Shop, whether you have donated items, purchased items or volunteered time to work in the Op Shop,” she said.

“The Bowerbird Opshop continues to help with purchasing items needed for Euroa Health to make the lives of our Acute Hospital Patients, GraniteHill Residents and Community Services Clients better.”

FACILITIES NAMED: “Shovelton” will reopen as a newly developed 10 bed Memory Support Unit and “Bowerbird” will replace Shovelton inside the GraniteHill facility.

The redeveloped 10 bed Memory Support Unit set to be located in the building formally known as Gilburn will be named “Shovelton” when the building opens

later this year.

The Shovelton family of Euroa are pleased that the name will transfer with the Memory Support Unit (currently within Gran-

Located near the front gate, sales help reduce the large pile of clothes currently held at the Op Shop and the money raised helps support other groups in the Violet Town community.

The runners up were the VT Café team, and third was Offline.

Cool change arrives for Euroa Farmers’ Market THE weather is cooling down and the season is slowly changing from Summer into Autumn, bringing a selection of different fresh fruit and veggies available at the many food stalls at the monthly Euroa Farmers’ Market this Saturday.

Foods sold this month will include homemade preserves and sauces, garlic, prime lamb, fresh bread, chocolate and fudges, biscuits and cakes, honey, granola, cereals and healthy snacks, eggs, beautiful smooth goats cheese, heirloom veggies and local apples, pears and tomatoes. Then there is fast food: scones, wraps and hamburgers, Turkish gozlemes and Jing’s dumplings.

Electronic signal lamp find at Bowerbird Op Shop OP shops are known to be full of treasures and the local Bowerbird Op Shop in Euroa is no different.

Bowerbird volunteer Phil Hawke recently discovered a piece of important history that on first glance looked to be just another “spotlight” used in our rural community.

Phil’s curiosity and research led him to discover this in fact was a World War II, Navy electronic signal lamp used to communicate from ship to ship.

The lamp was made in 1944

by General Electric and has two triggers to operate the reflector and lamp through Morse code.

Unbeknown to new owners of equipment sold at the Bowerbird Opshop, Phil continues to works his magic to clean, polish and researches donated tools and equipment to bring them back to life after their hard-working life and this piece received the same wonderful attention.

Outgoing Euroa Health chief executive Cherree Hunter acknowledged the historic importance of this electronic signal lamp, while Phil Hawkey connected with the members of Euroa RSL to enquire whether the lamp could be donated to Euroa RSL for their safe keeping with other historical items.

WHAT A FIND: A 1944 Navy Signal Lamp much like the one pictured was recently discovered at the Bowerbird Op Shop in Euroa.

Upon meeting in the shadows of the three Victoria Cross status in Euroa to handover the lamp, Phil Hawkey, Cherree, RSL president Phil Munt together with Euroa RSL member and historian Peter Ford stood with the lamp as it would have been used during World War I. Ms Hunter was very pleased the lamp was gratefully received by the Euroa RSL and it is now

preserved for future generations to learn about how communication was undertaken in the war time.

Previously Phil Hawkey has identified a World War I oil can for a Vickers Machine Gun which was sold through the op shop.

The Bowerbird Op Shop will now partner with Euroa RSL should any other historical

items come through, they can be proudly on display at Euroa RSL for our community.

Inspirational speakers share their stories about leadership EDUCATION is much more than just classroom lessons.

In March, eight students from Euroa Secondary College attended the Secondary Youth Leadership Conference in Melbourne.

At the conference students were given the opportunity to learn how to organise and run student-led events as well as to mix and network with a diverse range of students.

There were a range of inspirational speakers who spoke on the topics of leadership, including the importance of being aware of the many and varied ways of learning about themselves, working with others, interacting with their community, and clever tips for the students to take back to Euroa Secondary School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) to share with fellow students.

The speakers shared their own stories on leadership, their values and visions.

Included in the list of speakers were Wil Massara, 20-year-old social entrepreneur, changemaker and founder of Youth Leadership Academy Australia, Mandy Dante, chief executive officer and founder of Flourish Girl, TEDx speaker and Australian Accredited Facilitator, Amanda Marshall, international leadership facilitator, education consultant and empowerment specialist, and Mohamed Semra, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and

Kelvingrove hosting art show with a difference

By DIANE GRANT AN Art and Craft Show with a difference will be held in Nagambie on Saturday, March 25.

What will make it different to other shows is the fact that it will feature paintings and other artworks, craft items, handmade sewn, crocheted and knitted items, colourful quilts, embroidery, pottery, curios, collectables and memorabilia made or collected by many of the retired residents of Kelvingrove Village in Nagambie.

For the past few weeks many of them have been searching through their art and craft and memorabilia to showcase their handiwork or items from their collections to display them in the village hall.

Most of the residents are well over 70 years of age but it was thought that maybe they would like to show them to one another, their families and community.

Many of them should be proud of their achievements in their lives, and proud of what they have created, collected, inherited and now can show them off to the public.

NEVER TOO OLD: 84-year-old artist John Fielden with one of his paintings he will display in his Kelvingrove Village Art and Craft Show on March 25.

This Art and Craft Show that will also feature many other items will prove that they should not be regarded as old ‘fuddie duddies’ but have had interesting hobbies and learnt and used many skills throughout their lives.

Also, that some of them are still making some fantastic things for their own delight or their families.

his painting on show and his 81-year-old wife Bev who will include some items.

The Kelvingrove residents would like to invite folk from the local district to support their inaugural Art and Craft show and would welcome visitors on the afternoon.

It will be open from 1.30pm4.30pm at the 127 High Street, Nagambie Village site. $2 entry includes light afternoon tea and for those visitors parking is available in the street outside the Village.

There will be a fundraising raffle for the Village’s Mother’s Day musical afternoon Tea dance on 16 May. It will be drawn on the day.

Then on Saturday, April 22, the Kelvingrove Village residents want to hold a clearing or garage sale on the village lawns.

8am-2pm whereby the residents will have for sale unwanted items.

Then on Tuesday, May 16 a Mother’s Day afternoon tea dance with entertainer Noel Pearson will be held in the village hall and the local line dancers will be invited to join the village people who look forward to having a good time then too.

Explorers Way tourist drive set to launch THE Australian Heritage Festival 2023 is coming to a venue near you.

Tahbilk Winery has offered their Wetlands View Restaurant to host the launch of the Explorers Way tourist drive and brochure, a project of Nagambie Historical Society, in collaboration with the Strathbogie Shire.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 18 from 11am to 2pm.

This is also International Monuments and Sites Day. The Explorers Way revives the Major Mitchell Bicentennial Trail through the Shire, from Mitchellstown to Violet Town.

It then travels, in reverse, the tracks of Hume and Hovell, returning through Euroa and Longwood to Avenel.

The drive visits every cairn and memorial to the explorers in those areas, and the map brochure details other points of interest in each town.

Roads less travelled have been used for the drive to highlight the beauty of the Shire, away from the freeways; long arching tunnels of eucalypts, golden pastures with stands of ancient trees, wooden bridges and treelined creeks, with the blue of the ranges always in the distance.

Nagambie Historical Society secretary Judy Macdonald explained the trails and history behind them.

“The Major Mitchell Bicentennial Trail was a popular getaway experience in the 1990s as people took a few days to travel throughout Victoria and experience tiny townships and areas not seen before,” she said.

“The next edition was printed by another department but that also was discontinued.

“Consequently what was arguably the best tourist attraction to include so much of Victoria has fallen into disuse.

“Existing roads were used in the first instance so the trail is still there.

“The finger posts remain in many areas, but the brochure itself has become a rare book.”

The new brochure is a simple foldout but remains true to the directions given in the original.

The theme of the 2023 Festival is shared stories and the society feels the earliest stories of Europeans in our district are those of these explorers, told

from their journals.

It is hoped that future grants can provide funds for interpretive panels at Mitchellstown, telling the story of the original communities, who were displaced by the consequences of successful exploration.

Two passionate speakers will be the highlight of the launch.

Surveyor Gregory Eccleston was instrumental in creating the 1700 km Major Mitchell Long Distance Trail and has written a fascinating and beautifully illustrated book, Granville Stapylton Australia Felix 1836: second in command to Major Mitchell, some copies of which will be available on the day.

Drone footage will support Greg Eccleston’s talk, showing the party’s approach route, the Crossing Place on the Goulburn River, the camp site of October 8, 1836 on what is now Tahbilk

land, and beyond.

The second speaker, Ken McInnes devised the extensive Hume and Hovell trail through New South Wales.

Both will give insights into the experiences of these intrepid men as they crossed what is now Strathbogie Shire.

Councillor Reg Dickinson has been asked to launch the drive and brochure.

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is promoting the Victorian Festival through its many avenues.

A light lunch will be included in the $30 ticket price.

AGRICULTURAL NEWS Need for care after the wet spring PASTURES affected by flooding and severe waterlogging will need some extra care this season to reestablish healthy productive pastures.

By focusing on soil testing, soil temperatures, seed depth, irrigation, weed control and grazing management, this will all help with pasture re-establishment.

Soil testing is highly recommended.

After flooding sandy soils can have issues with leaching of various nutrients, such as sulphur, potassium and nitrogen.

Heavy soils that have been inundated for prolonged periods; denitrification can occur.

Previously planned fertiliser applications may need to be adjusted to suit.

The soil test may also indicate the need for gypsum application to help build and protect soil structure.

Soil temperature is a critical aspect of any pasture establishment.

The ideal soil temperature for sowing varies depending on the species.

For ryegrass and clovers,

the ideal soil temperature for germination is between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Persian and Shaftall clover can withstand higher soil temperatures of up to 35 degrees.

Oats have an ideal soil temperature range of between 10 to 25 degrees, while wheat and barley prefer temperatures a couple of degrees lower than oats.

If you are unsure of soil temperatures, a good rule of thumb for ryegrass and clover is to sow when daily maximum air temperatures for five consecutive days average less than 25 degrees.

Above these temperatures seeding establishment is reduced significantly and pastures may need to be resown.

The sowing depth of seed is proportional to the seed size.

A general rule of sowing is that sowing depth should be twice the length of the seed.

For example, ryegrass seed should be sown at 1-2cm depth.

If seed is sown too deep, it will increase the time it takes to emerge, or it may

To achieve a dense, productive pasture aim for plant densities of 600 seedlings/ m2.

Plant densities should be measured one week post emergence.

If the plant density is below 600 seedlings/m2 action

may be required.

Pasture with counts lower than 80 per cent will require more drastic action to perform at their best.

Newly established seedlings are more susceptible to moisture stress than established plants.

Depending on the sea-

son, the first irrigation will typically use 1.5 ML/ha with subsequent irrigations requiring 0.5 ML/ha, depending on soil type and irrigation layout.

After the pasture sward is established, the first grazing is crucial to get right, as it can set the pasture up for

the remainder of the season.

The pasture should be 10 cm high and at least at the two-leaf stage.

Before grazing check if the root system is developed enough by using the ‘pluck test’.

To complete a ‘pluck test’, take a tiller between your fingers and pull in a motion to mimic a hungry cow’s bite.

If it tears without pulling the plant out of the ground, it is ready to graze.

Graze pastures to a residual height of 4-6 cm.

This will help promote tillering, minimise damage to the pasture and set the residual height for future grazing’s.

On-off grazing should be used to help achieve residuals of 4-6 cm when first grazing new pastures.

It is vital to get the basics of pasture establishment and grazing right to ensure the best result possible and produce healthy productive pastures.

Farmers warn regional roads need more maintenance cash THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says regional roads won’t be able to cope with future severe weather events if they are not maintained to a basic standard.

In a recent submission to the federal parliament, the VFF argues that a lack of road maintenance funding exacerbated damage caused by recent flooding.

VFF President Emma Germano said farmers

were frustrated that governments continue to neglect road maintenance.

“Enhancing the resilience of the road network to deal with extreme weather events is important, but it can only be achieved by ensuring there is regular maintenance to keep them at an acceptable standard,” she said.

“Maintenance funding keeps going backwards and worryingly Victorians keep

risking their lives on dodgy and dangerous roads.”

VFF Transport and Infrastructure Committee Chair Ryan Milgate said that in planning for resilience, the government needs to take into account changes in network usage and the increasing demands placed on the roads by high-productivity freight vehicles.

“Resilience is not only about the gravel and bitumen, but the planning pro-

cesses around it too,” he said.

“The standard and condition of roads must be up to the task of carrying the freight vehicles we use to get food and fibre to market.

“That’s why the VFF is advocating for the Victorian Government to undertake a state-wide agricultural freight strategy, to better understand where investments need to be targeted.”

Mr Milgate also said that local government must be better resourced to get on with the job of fixing their road networks.

“We are seeing shires in the north of the state facing repair bills of over $50 million in the aftermath of the floods,” he said.

“The Victorian Government has cut its Fixing Country Roads Program, which is badly needed to help local government plan

and get on top of road rehabilitation.”

The VFF also supported calls by the newly formed Rural Roads Alliance for a $5.5 billion emergency funding package in the upcoming federal budget.

“We’ll continue calling on the Victorian and Commonwealth governments to increase the funding available to regional roads asset maintenance,” Mr Milgate said.

Make a submission to dob in a dodgy road EACH year Australians travel, on average, 12,100 kilometres in a passenger vehicle.

Australian road users know the ins and outs of their local roads like no other, and because of this, the Australian Government is encouraging individuals to dob in a road for funding under the Black Spot Program.

The Australian Government allocates $110 million per year to the Black Spot Program.

The Black Spot Program targets road locations where crashes are occurring or are at a risk of occurring.

The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred, or are at risk of occurring.

Black Spot projects make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths on Australia’s roads, and

“Applying for funding through the Black Spot Program is easy, all you need to do is fill in the online two-page form and sub-

mit it to your state or territory Black Spot Consultative Panel.

“Black Spot funding is only available to projects submitted through the nomination process - so if a road concerns you, take the time to make a submission.”

So, if you have a concern about a local road, take the time out to nominate the road for funding through the Black Spot Program.

Nominations are considered annually by Black Spot Consultative Panels in each jurisdiction, who recommend projects for approval to the relevant federal Minister.

Applying for Black Spot funding is as simple as filling in a form and submitting it to your local state or territory Consultative Panel for consideration.

IWD celebrated in Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT THE International Women’s day movement began in March 1911, in central Europe and for over a century has been celebrated at the United Nations and across the world on March 8 each year or a day close too.

The theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2023 is “Embrace Equity” and the UN global Women’s is “Cracking the code: “innovation for a gender equal future.”

This theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future.

Nagambie celebrated the annual event with a breakfast on Saturday, March 11 at Zephyrz bistro with 40 guests attending the annual event hosted by the Nagambie Lakes Community House (NLCH).

Anna Close, NLCH coordinator welcomed the guests to the delicious breakfast served by Zephryz and thanked everyone for attending the International Women’s Day brekkie.

Local Taungurung woman Bonnie Cavanagh was the guest speaker for the morning.

34 year old Ms Cavanagh showed her passion about diversity, inclusion, and community connectedness and empowerment - particularly in grassroots communities where she is a fierce advocate for same in many leadership roles.

Ms Cavanagh spoke on her early background as a young indigenous person, and how her father protected her and her family from criticisms and racism in her early school years.

She graduated from RMIT University.

In both her professional and volunteer capacity, Bonnie Cavanagh takes enormous pride in creating genuine opportunities for community engagement to empower, celebrate, value, connect and support people in meaningful and accessible ways.

Her talk included her love of sport especially Aussie Rules Football and netball.

She believes the future for indigenous peoples is in the changes that are being made by vital communications between her people

and those in power, and how many Australians need to understand and consider the process and the whys and wherefores behind the referendum on “The Voice” being proposed in parliament.

Ms Cavanagh ended her enlightening morning’s talk by speaking on the differences of Equality and Equity.

Firewood collection season opens across Victoria THE autumn firewood collection season was officially opened across Victoria at the start of the month.

Firewood can only be collected from public land twice a year for domestic use from designated collection areas during autumn (March 1 to June 30) and spring (September 1 to November 30).

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) Hume Region Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Jarrod Hayse, spoke about the beginning of the season.

“Firewood collection areas are selected for a range of reasons including the availability of firewood, community safety, and to protect sites of cultural and environmental significance,” he said.

“Collection limits are in place to prevent stockpiling of firewood, which is important to ensure there’s enough firewood on public land for people who rely on it as their only source of heating.

“Limits include taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year.

“The felling of trees and cutting hollow logs for firewood is also prohibited.”

The Conservation Regulator, FFMVic and Parks Victoria authorised officers conduct regular patrols of

BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK Pennant - division five Avenel played Euroa in the preliminary final at Nagambie last week.

The Euroa lads were far too good on all levels and won convincingly 53 - 22.

Robyn Hyland, Ruth Underwood, Charlie Kemp, Rob Kemp (s) were six down by the fifth end.

A four on the next end bought the deficit to two shots and hope for a close game.

But Euroa had other ideas and bowled superbly for a fourteen shot win 26 - 12.

Nyoli Bell, Mario Gittus, Glen Bell, Graham Lewis (s) won only seven ends for the game and just could not match the accurate bowling of the Euroa team cruising home with a seventeen-shot win, 27 - 10.

Euroa now go on to play Shepparton Park at Nagambie in the Grand Final.

Fittingly these are the two top teams with Avenel finishing third for the season.

Avenel is hosting two weekend division grand finals this Saturday.

Dookie and Eildon are playing in the division five grand final while Violet Town and Rushworth play off in the division seven grand final.

The green is in excellent condition and being award-

ed a grand final is a hats off to greenkeeper Spud Furletti and the small band of ground maintenance crew for their tireless work over many months in preparing the green and the ongoing maintenance required to keep it in tip top condition.

GOLF NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB - MEN A DAY of two halves at the Nagambie course with glorious autumn weather at the start of the round only to be trumped with a wild storm and heavy rain interrupting the finishing holes.

But the day belonged to the player with the most resolve and that was our resident hardman Greg Whiteman with 39 points, Whiteman said his overall game was solid and attributed the win to the good company of his playing group on the course.

Runner up was another hard shell Alan ‘Angry’ Anderson putting together a fine round of 38 points, rounding out the top three was new member Alan Sohroder with a one better

than handicap 37 points.

The challenging conditions meant greens were hard to hit with only two nearest the pins going off, they were Greg Whiteman going close and blocking the hole on the long par-three eighth, and Joe Labas chasing one up to the 13th.

Next week is the RSL Charity day for both men and ladies a $25 entry fee will be charged which includes lunch, stableford will be played and hit off is between 8am and 9am - visitors are welcome.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB WOMEN THERE were 11 players for a round of Stableford in perfect conditions.

The A Grade Winner with 38pts was Moz Fowler.

The B and C Grade Winner was Karyn Thompson with 34pts.

The Saturday stroke event had seven players with a handicap of one or less compete for the Euroa Health share sponsored event.

None were better than local Paul Robinson who shot a 71 despite an injury to win from Mark Corradin on 72 Mills and Carraher next on 73.

In the ladies Gail Allen took out the scratch event while tournament director Mandy Edwards won the handicap event.

The men’s handicap winner was Glen Burton on countback from Marcus Steers and Garry Ritchie.

Scratch division two winner was the ever reliable Keith Seeber.

The field included visitors from eight different clubs.

The course was beautifully presented by the curator and his small band of hard working volunteers.

Sunday was the Ausure Insurance 4 Ball Event where the field optimistically teed off under a very threatening sky and disappointingly the heavens opened up after only three or four holes had been played.

Even though the rain persisted, half the field of keen if not mad golfers felt they owed it to the sponsors to finish the event and Local Kevin Mead and Dalhousies’, Graeme Hogg still managed 43 points in tough conditions just in front of Prorock and Corradin on 41.

In the ladies Levena Redfern and Michelle Thomson endured the wet to win the ladies on 39 points from Robyn Anthony and the free swinging Justine Collins on 38.

It was good to have Drew Dwan back on the course that his family have worked so hard to build over many years.

Other visitors included a member of Calrossie Castle golf club in Scotland.

Monday saw perfect conditions return for the mixed Pinehurst event sponsored by the Andrews family - Full results on the web page.

Next Saturday is a Stapleford event.

Twilight is hanging on until the end of the Month and on Sunday, Euroa plays host to the DDGA country Teams Ambrose event which will see the course full to capacity.

Green fee players will be restricted to Saturday, with autumn conditions after 20mm of rain the course is in perfect condition.

It’s about having fun at parkrun EUROA parkrun is a free community event which takes place every Saturday morning at Seven Creeks Park at 8am.

Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s not about running.

It’s about bringing people together in an open space to have some fun in a friendly and supportive environment.

The course starts at the barbeque area and travels out-and-back along the creek for a total of 5km.

There are many ways to participate, with people walking, jogging and running the course.

Each event is run by dedicated, local volunteers and anyone is most welcome to lend a hand in easy, fun volunteer roles.

There are no winners at Euroa parkrun and no-one comes last because we always have a volunteer ‘Tail Walker’.

Whilst there isn’t a time limit, it’s interesting to note that the average finish time for Australia is 33:06 minutes and here at Euroa parkrun we are delighted

that our average finish time is five minutes slower, at 38:25 minutes.

This represents the wonderful cohort of nonrunners we attract who complete the course at their own pace.

There are currently parkrun events in 22 countries with 465 parkrun events in Australia taking place every weekend.

Devotees known as ‘parkrun Tourists’ schedule their Saturdays at different parkrun locations.

Euroa parkrun always attracts loads of visitors and in the past two weeks we have enjoyed the company of participants from far away as Torquay, Mt Eliza, Eaglehawk, Traralgon, Maryborough, Rosebud, Maribyrnong, Ballarat, Cobram, Rockleigh, SA and Leeds, UK. Each of these visitors contribute to the local economy through accommodation and tourism.

If you haven’t been to Euroa parkrun for a while, we are back with

a repaired track after the floods.

If you are brand new to parkrun we encourage you to come along.

You don’t need special clothing and you definitely don’t need to be athletic.

Regular participation is rewarded rather than performance, with free ‘parkrun milestone t-shirts’ to recognise people’s achievements in attending.

The event is positive, welcoming and inclusive.

Carriage classic held in Longwood

LONGWOOD Carriage Driving Club has held its Australian Classic Combined Driving Event (CDE), based at the Longwood Recreation Reserve in Longwood.

The club hosts the annual Skye Park Australian Carriage Driving Classic at Longwood, usually on the second weekend in November each year, however, this year’s was held last weekend.

The club also hosts a level 2 CDE which has been running at Longwood for over 20 years, and also hosts National and State CDE Championships as required.

Where possible, the club runs an entry level 4 CDE in the autumn, known as “Little Longwood”.

The club also runs the show harness classes at the Euroa Show, every fourth weekend in October.

Other activities include training days followed by working bees at the grounds.

These days are run as required, and they do not conduct regular rallies or pleasure drives.

All enquiries to use the grounds for any carriage driving related activity, either on a personal or group basis, must be directed to, and approved by, the Longwood Carriage Driving Club, which is the affiliated user body of the Longwood Recreation Reserve.

Over the home and away matches for the season, the players have had very good camaraderie playing together to get the result.

Another successful year for the Labour Day Tennis Tournament

THERE were record numbers again this year for the award winning Euroa Labour Day Lawn Tennis Tournament, continuing a history of growing year on year.

By Friday last week, there were 650 players attending with their families and friends - Euroa accommodation is booked out, people are staying in surrounding towns (eg Shepparton, Benalla, Violet Town).

They will play over 1200 matches and compete in 55 events across the three day event.

Past players and club members took advantage of ‘entry by invitation only’ such that the tournament was unable to open to general public admission.

There was frenetic activity among past players to try and secure a spot.

As a result, the club has had to direct players to an emergency list with the hope of gaining a place due to others withdrawing.

The tournament has largely been a ‘closed shop’ when it comes to new players.

Among the record num-

ber of players in the open singles titles (mens and ladies), seven past title holders will be competing again for a first prize of $1000 in each event.

Members and the tournament committee have been working on the courts, venue and planning for months leading up to the event.

Much work has gone into preparing the Friendlies Oval surface (with a record 15 extra courts this year), to an exceptionally high standard that will compete with the main venue as a playing surface.

All of the above builds on having won 2022 - Most Outstanding Tournament Australia - whilst also feeling the pressure to maintain an exceptional event standard!

It’s not all about the tennis with a barbecue provided on the Saturday and a sit down dinner held on the Sunday while enjoying live music.

While being a huge task for club members, running such a large event is a community effort and the club benefits from the support of many local businesses as sponsors.

This year’s ladies final was played between Laura Langmead (10 times past open champion) and new player to us, Philippa Bush.

Philippa had beaten last years winner (Olivia Quigley) in the semis on way to final).

Philippa overpowered Laura in straight sets 6/3 6/2 with some huge hitting to win the $1000 first prize.

In the mens, once again a previous winner Tom McKay played off against ex-Shepparton player Hugo Kearney.

Hugo won in straight sets 6/3 6/3 to take the $1000 first prize.

Quarter-final and semifinal matches had been deferred from the rain affected Sunday so the Monday program was very busy, finishing in the late afternoon.

Everyone coped with the rain affected Sunday when play had to be abandoned good grace and understanding of the predicament faced by the tournament committee.

Players are now already locking in their plans and accommodation to return in 2024.
