THE Labor Party have confirmed their candidate for the Euroa electorate, announcing that local schoolteacher Angela Tough will contest the Nationals-held seat in the November election.

Ms Tough, from Strathbogie, has been a teacher for 20 years and currently teaches at the Euroa Secondary College.

“I’ve been a teacher for 20 years, with English teaching being my major focus,” she said.

“I also have two little ones myself, a son and daughter aged nine and six who go to school locally.

“My husband is a farmer and works full time on the family farm.

“We’re a politically engaged family and we are constantly watching the news.

Having previously been an active member of Labor branches in Melbourne, Ms Tough feels the time is right to get back into the political arena.

“I was active in the Labor branches when I used to live in Melbourne,” she said.

“I helped work on campaigns many years ago.

“It got tougher to keep that up while living here, even branch meetings

Ms Tough spoke about motivated her to get involved ahead of this election, and discussed the impact of other politicians in the region.

“I really got the passion back after listening to Cathy McGowan and the Voices for Indi,” she said.

“I was following that closely and could see that have an impact on our life.

“We were very remote and couldn’t get reception while there were bushfires happening.

“Cathy McGowan led the campaign to get phone towers in, and we were in one of the areas to receive them.

“It changed our life and I was able to see how someone could effect change as a politician.”

Ms Tough began finding ways to involve herself in the political sphere, even contesting the Indi preselection against Helen Haines ahead of the 2019 Federal Election.

Liberal Party, Hearn discuss education reform

By GUS RIDDER THE Liberal Party is looking to introduce new policy around reinvigorating the teaching workforce and bringing teachers back to the classroom and away from the red tape of administration.

A simplified curriculum will be proposed for Victorian students under a new commitment announced last week by the Victorian Liberals.

According to the Liberal Party, the most recent Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) from 2018 showed the results of students across Australia, including in Victoria, are stagnating and falling behind the rest of the world in mathematics, science and literacy.

Shadow Minister for Education, David Hodgett, reported a simplified curriculum and better support for teachers was essential to supporting students to catch-up on two years of lost learning.

The Liberal Party are expected to invest $200 million to develop and implement a simplified curriculum that will include: • simplifying the prep to year 10 curriculum so it can be taught in a schooling year; • streamlining the curricu-

An expert panel will be established to provide informed advice to government on progressing these changes.

The Liberal candidate for the seat of Euroa Brad Hearn, a Benalla school principal, says he is supportive of the call for reforms and further investment in country schools.

“We will utilise education experts to deliver a streamlined curriculum that is realistic and delivers more for our students,” he said.

“After years of lost learning it is important that in rural areas we refocus on the essentials and support teachers, families and students to reconnect with learning.

“We need to have real solutions.

“That is what I support, real actions to support our children to get their educational and social development back on track.

“Victoria’s curriculum is becoming more cluttered at the same time as academic data is declining in comparison - we need to refocus on the essentials to get things right in our schools.

“It is time to focus on the things that matter and that is our kids.”

Arborist report released for Longwood-Ruffy Road

By GUS RIDDER AN assessment of 15 trees on Longwood-Ruffy Road, Ruffy has been completed, with the Strathbogie Shire Council receiving a report put together by Homewood Consulting at the end of August.

Debate around the trees has persisted over the last few months, with the Ruffy community adamant that the trees posed a risk to the community and that something needed to be done to address the issue.

Council has held meetings with the community to discuss the matter and in a previous meeting had agreed to arrange a second arborist report of the area along the Longwood-Ruffy Road.

This newly released report assessed the condition of the trees, the risk that the trees currently present in the landscape, and provided recommendations on how the trees should be managed.

15 trees were nominated for assessment by Strathbogie Shire.

REPORT RELEASED: A second arborist report has been completed on the Longwood-Ruffy Road, evaluating the trees as low-risk despite having serious defects and potential to cause issues for those on the road.

One tree has been felled and two trees have failed.

Of the remaining 12 trees, the structure ranged from Fair to Very Poor.

Two trees have been established as having ‘fair’ structure, showing only minor problems in the structure of the crown.

Seven trees have ‘poor’ structure, with or without root damage, trunk and canopy decay

and evidence of past canopy failure.

Three trees have ‘very poor’ structure, with either major root damage or heavy trunk decay.

A risk assessment using the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) method was conducted on the remaining 12 trees.

All of the 12 trees that are still

standing have been graded with a ‘low’ TRAQ Risk Rating.

The ‘low’ risk rating is due to the low target occupancy of the road.

This rating means that despite many of the trees having significant defects and having the potential to cause serious consequences, it is unlikely these consequences will happen due to low-levels of traffic on the road.

One member of the Ruffy community was unsure about this analysis.

“I seriously question this,” they said.

“I do not understand where this assumption comes from, however the council have just accepted it. “I would have thought that a vehicle count number should have been included to verify and support this assumption.”

Works have been recommended for the trees that could fail under normal weather conditions within the next two years, and where the failed tree or tree part is expected to impact the road.

“It came away from that not feeling like I lost, but instead had sparked a fire in myself.

“To meet all these beautiful, engaged people was really encouraging.

“I felt invigorated politically by seeing the grassroots action from these people.”

This fire for politics was reignited during the pandemic according to Ms Tough, who saw an opportunity to become more involved in the region’s politics.

“During the pandemic, it became clear that we needed strong leadership,” Ms Tough said.

“I could feel myself aligning with the Labor party in Victoria and started getting more involved with Labor politics.

“When I heard there wasn’t much noise about the Labor Party in the seat of Euroa, I thought why not?

“The process was very thorough, it took a few months to confirm I’d be the candidate.

“I was really glad to see such stringent efforts from the party to ensure everything was kept above board.

“I feel really safe after seeing the integrity shown by the party.”

Now that the candidacy has been confirmed, Ms Tough is working hard to prepare for the election and ensure the needs of the electorate are met.

By GUS RIDDER AS reported in last week’s edition of The Euroa Gazette, the Euroa Acute Hospital is at risk of closure due to a lack of funding from the State Government.

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has demanded action and vowed to fight for additional funding if elected in November.

The hospital is on track to post a $700,000 deficit this year, with figures showing it receives just $9300 from the State Government for each hospital bed.

This compares with an average of $472,000 per bed paid to hospitals of a similar size in Alexandra, Kerang, Mansfield and Rochester.

“Strathbogie Shire is the only local government area in Victoria where there is no publicly funded hospital,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This is a terrible inequity and we must fight for change.

“It is an injustice Euroa receives almost no funding from the state simply because it was founded a century ago as a communityowned hospital.

“Euroa residents could be treated in their own community but instead anyone without private health

insurance has to drive to Shepparton, Seymour or Wangaratta.

“If Euroa’s hospital is forced to close, the region’s base hospitals - which have turned people away in recent months because they are at capacity - will come under more pressure.

“Euroa is an asset, prepared to take the pressure off those hospitals, while delivering care to locals who need it.”

Ms Cleeland’s commitment to fight for the hospital’s future comes after the Nationals Member for Euroa Steph Ryan again raised in parliament the need to urgently fund community owned hospitals.

Victoria was once home to over 40 community owned hospitals, which has now shrunk to just five.

“There are just five bush nursing hospitals left across the state and without dedicated state funding they are ultimately headed for closure,” Ms Ryan said.

“Not only is this shortsighted and causing anxiety in our communities but it will strip communities like Euroa of services.

“The Andrews Government would rather let these services collapse than acknowledge the role they play in their local

communities.

“Euroa and Nagambie are effectively being punished because years ago those communities had the vision and the drive to fundraise to start their own hospitals.

“While I was successful in securing some funding for Euroa Health four years ago, the reality is that without a dedicated funding stream from the State Government, the hospital will go to the wall.

“That would be criminal, particularly when Euroa has wonderful and capable staff who can help ease the burden of a struggling health system.”

Euroa Health has organised a petition to the Legislative Assembly in Victorian Parliament, sponsored by Steph Ryan.

The petition requests that the Legislative Assembly provide public funding to prevent closure of the Euroa Acute Hospital.

In turn, supporting the much-needed reforms to the Victorian Healthcare system, that the 22 beds can relieve pressures on surrounding overcrowded hospitals like Goulburn Valley Health and North East Health.

Firefighter presumptive rights push NORTHERN Victorian MP Tania Maxwell has ramped up her community campaign to add female-specific ovarian, uterine and cervical cancers to Victoria’s schedule of firefighter presumptive rights.

The Derryn Hinch Justice Party MP said firefighters currently have presumptive rights to medical and financial help if they are diagnosed with any of 12 cancers because of their career or volunteer firefighting work.

“Only two months ago the World Health Organisation cancer agency (IARC) reclassified firefighting as an occupation carcinogenic to humans,” Ms Maxwell, a CFA volunteer herself, said.

“So, with more and more women becoming career and volunteer firefighters, it’s vital the government adds these three female-specific cancers to Victoria’s list.

“The state should have all firefighters’ backs when they’re protecting our lives, communities, property and environment.

“It’s simply a matter of safety and equality.”

The inequity could not have been made more stark than at her ‘Do Gooder’ campaign launch in Wangaratta on Monday where female firefighter with Wangaratta Urban Fire Brigade, Monique Hillenaar, revealed she only learned about the disparity that morn-

ing in a page message to attend the media conference.

“It was a bit of a shock,” Ms Hillenaar said.

“I fall into the category of not realising (the presumptive rights do not include cancers more commonly found in women).

“I do think it is probably discriminatory.”

Ms Hillenaar said if Ms Maxwell’s legislation was passed it would encourage her to remain in the job for years to come, but a continued lack of action would have many female firefighters and volunteers question whether they stay involved.

Ms Maxwell first moved to bring on the change when she put an amendment to the Forests Amendment (Forest Firefighters’ Presumptive Rights Compensation) Bill 2021 in October last year.

“The government committed then and there to consultation, a review of the latest medical and scientific advice, and involving me in discussions with women firefighters,” she said.

“Seven months later - in May, this year - I introduced a private member’s bill to legislate the addition of ovarian, uterine and cervical cancers to the presumptive rights schedule, and the government promised a lasting solution ‘at the proper time’.

“Then the World Health

Organisation’s cancer agency (IARC) in July announced its reclassification of firefighting as a cause of cancer.

“With the strong support of Volunteer Fire Brigades of Victoria, members of Fire Services Victoria, Country Fire Authority and the United Firefighters Union, surely ‘the proper time’ has arrived for the government to act.”

“It’s important that we get it right, which is why we’re currently in the process of consulting on and developing an informed and clear approach to these issues - as we said we’d do.

“We are working hard to ensure women are encouraged to become firefighters with over $8 million in the 2022-23 budget for female facilities - and the CFA has established a Women’s Advisory Committee and providing women’s General Firefighter training to support female firefighters.”

Since I was young I have loved learning about the explorers and discoverers of our world, from the Dutch, the Portuguese, the English, and the Spanish and so on who explored and discovered the wonders in South and North America, the African, European and Asian continents and the arctic regions.

From the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower going to America, from Captain Cook, and then our first fleet, and Bass and Flinders, Abel Tasman, and others daring their lives to for years on the high seas to discover and explore this ancient land cared for by our first nations people.

Then there are some of our inland explorers like Hume and Hovell, Burke and Wills, Major Mitchell, and Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson to name a few.

Euroa Men’s Shed funding

By GUS RIDDER THE State Labor Government has announced further funding to support the work of Men’s Sheds and improve the health and wellbeing of men.

Under the latest round of funding for the vital community hubs, the State Government is providing grants of up to $80,000 for 30 Men’s Sheds across the state.

Funding has been allocated to build new spaces or extend and refurbish existing workshops across the State, including in the Strathbogie Shire.

Announced during Men’s Shed Week, the grants will support men’s sheds to provide a welcoming place where men of all ages can connect, socialise, learn new skills and work on common building projects together.

Men’s sheds groups create practical and engaging spaces which support local communities in many ways, such as running firstaid courses, building picnic tables for local schools and making toys for local childcare groups.

“Men’s Sheds play an important role in providing a welcoming place for social connection, to learn new skills and contribute to the community and improve wellbeing,” Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Colin Brooks said.

“This investment will support upgrades for Men’s Sheds throughout the state, delivering more opportunities for Victorians to reconnect after a difficult couple of years.

“These grants give local communities an opportunity to establish a men’s shed or undertake refurbishments that will ensure an existing men’s shed is fit for purpose so that safe, productive and accessible meeting places are available to our diverse men’s sheds groups.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all Victorians in different ways and these grants will give local communities an opportunity to establish a Men’s Shed or undertake refurbishments to create safe, productive and accessible meeting places.

Grant recipients in the latest round include the Euroa Men’s Shed, which will receive funds to for the refurbishment, extension or upgrade of the existing shed.

There are currently more than 360 communities with Men’s Sheds throughout Victoria.

The grant program is part of the government’s broader $1 million investment in Men’s Sheds.

Space craft have been sent to discover other planets and go towards the stars.

Are their exploits to be called invasions too as some would have us call our January 26, of which most Australians honour as our national day?

I do not agree that councils have the right to change our national day.

I would like to see everyone calling Australia Day and the days of other explorations man has endured as discovery days.

Let us speak up for all Australians of all cultures who live here now, to walk into the future together, not just follow the ones

The sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen IT is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. For 70 years she has provided distinguished service to the Commonwealth, including Australia.

Her Majesty spent her life in service to the Commonwealth, was dedicated to her family and fulfilled her duty with dignity, honour and good humour.

My condolences are with her family and the many people who are grieving her loss.

A beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and monarch.

Her service has spanned extraordinary global change, through which she has been a steadfast leader.

May she rest in peace.

By Kirsty Harris WHAT a great weekend in Violet Town!

Although the weather wasn’t fabulous and crowds were small, the market was on, visitors were wandering around town seeing the sights, the Ellen Frances had music happening on Saturday night, Bush Gatherings had a meet the artist exhibition, the bowls club had their opening day of the season and the op shop had its AGM. In addition, St Dunstan’ Church hosted a christening which turned out to also be a surprise wedding - congratulations to Cam and Janey.

Cam is a Blake family member, the Blakes being old Violet Town people.

The op shop committee get 10 out of 10 for the most efficient annual general meeting I’ve ever attended and there’s nothing but good news from them with a growing bank balance, full committee and positive and useful changes happening in the store.

And terrific volunteers of course!

A reminder that the half price sale is now on at the op shop - all clothing, accessories and shoes - another good reason to support our great community asset.

Also, Butch, John and Mick on the Op Shop team are looking for some young and strong mates to help them on an occasional basis with the collecting and moving of furniture pieces.

The Bowls Club afternoon was well attended with the rain holding off to allow both bowls and croquet play.

And finally, congratulations to the Violet Town CFA for recently rescuing a small lamb that had fallen down a deep sewerage inspection pit both lamb and volunteers survived.

LONGWOOD LOOKOUT

By Sally Tobin and the Longwood Action Group A BIG welcome to Nadsie and her team who have taken over the lease of the White Hart Hotel.

It’s great to see so many local faces getting together for a catch up!

The Longwood Action Group working bee last Sunday was attended by about 10 people who tidied up some of the public garden beds around the town and the tennis courts.

There are many more jobs to be completed at the next working bee due to the wet grounds around town.

Afterwards, a BBQ cooked by our trusty chef Normie Jones was enjoyed.

Thank you to all who came along to help out.

The Longwood Action Group will once again be holding its annual Community Picnic Day. So, save the date for Sunday, October 30 from 11.30am-3pm.

It will be held at the Pub Paddock BBQ area and more details to follow soon.

Longwood Playgroup is held weekly each Tuesday of the school term at the Longwood Primary School at 9am.

ACTIVITIES IN AVENEL

By Lynj James JIM Peart’s Memorial Service last Tuesday, September 6 at Avenel (Fowles) was attended by, along with his loving family, around 400 people from Avenel, the regions and further afield, with also many apologies and best wishes from afar and near.

James Rylan (Jim) Peart’s childhood in Skipton was followed by studies, works, marriage and family with Winifred, and a long term engineering partnership.

Jim and his beloved family did amazing and impressive things, including 20 years or more on land around Mangalore.

He continued his lifelong deepest interest in ‘all that is water’.

13 years ago, Winifred and Jim moved to Avenel and contributed generously and creatively to the community life in many forms.

Some of the many contributions made by Jim included being Chair of Avenel’s 175th Celebration Committee (2013), and the purchase, design (sensitive to access needs, town ambience and outlook, long view, heritage values, etc.) and the physical establishment of the Belmont Street Estate.

These have been a boon to the community, essentially providing easier sites for their homes for some of our older generations in the now and for their future.

With his expertise and style, Jim was also involved with the early 21st century physical expansion of the Avenel Uniting Church, being the addition of a joining building between the late 19th century building and the 1930s timber building.

The Uniting Church design is extremley practical, graceful, heritage aware and with quiet flair.

The list could go on.

Jim’s giving, listening, sharing and supporting; both visible and invisible.

He was a great family man, colleague and friend.

He was also an extraordinary citizen.

Warm, erudite, committed, conscientious, effective, interesting, interested, with attention, focus and a sense of humour.

Very best wishes to his family and friends.

It will be held at the Wine Shed of Fowles Wines on Lambing Gully Road and start at 6.30pm with country and western fun including dancing with the Mason Brothers, delicious food and wine.

August for Afghanistan makes goal RURAL Australians for Refugees (RAR) - Strathbogie Shire have been delighted with the response from the community to the various events held throughout August to raise funds for Afghanistan.

A documentary screening at St Dunstan’s in early August was two or three seats short of a full house, and the hearty Afghan Aash soup was declared a winner, especially as it was such a wintry, foggy evening.

A week or so later, Violet Towners and out-of-Towners filled the Violet Town Community Supper Room to enjoy an Afghan Feast prepared by two terrific cooks from the Hazara Afghan community in Shepparton.

On the final weekend of August, an auction of items generously donated by local retailers and individuals drew a sizable crowd, with several items going well beyond the set reserve in some close bidding.

Many of the crowd enjoyed a delicious Indian lunch at Euroa’s Northern Rasoi restaurant, where the guest speakers were Lida Hazara, the chief executive officer of Afghan Women for Change and her colleague, Nasima Kokkai.

This Melbourne-based organization provides funds to continue the education of

girls above sixth grade, as well as to support families in extreme poverty.

Marie Sellstrom, who heads the national RAR campaign for Afghanistan, also informed the diners of the Indi-based RAR sponsorship of 35 Afghan families, as well as the national scope of that program, which sponsors over 70 Afghan families.

RAR wishes to acknowledge the heartwarming generosity of the local community and to thank all who supported August for Afghanistan.

The $6000+ raised will be shared between Women for Change and the national RAR Fund for Afghanistan.

You can still join members of RAR for an afternoon of music from The Pure Drop musicians in aid of Ukrainian refugees.

Thursday, October 6 at 1.30pm at the Euroa Third Age Club.

Firewood collection now open RESIDENTS in Strathbogie Shire can now access roadside firewood collection permits with the season open from September 1 to November 30.

Roadside Firewood Collection permits are available at council customer service locations, 109A Binney Street, Euroa and 293 High Street, Nagambie and cost $18 per cubic meter.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said dead and fallen timber were an important habitat for our native flora and fauna.

“This means that firewood collection for

domestic use is only permitted on medium conservation roadsides throughout the municipality,” Cr Binks said.

“Our website features a handy mapping overlay which shows the roads where firewood is permitted to be collected or you can simply contact council to determine which roadsides are suitable for collection.”

Residents are reminded firewood collection is not permitted on any roads managed

by VicRoads.

Euroa Show back bigger SAVE the date, the 130th Annual Euroa Show is just a few weeks away.

The show will be held across Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23 this year.

Many of the favoured feature attractions have been secured for this year’s show, with “Black Snake Productions” (the snake man) and the animal nursery to name a couple.

All the usual features will be back such as horse events (over two days), yard dog trials, shearing, cattle, sheep, chooks, goats, wool and pavilion entries.

There will be entertainment such as live singing and bands, side-show area, trading venues and many other displays.

It is hoped there will be something for everyone of all ages.

Additional features this year will be

our special guest - “Farmer Will” (from Longwood) who featured in the last series of popular TV show “Farmer Wants a Wife”.

The show opening will be conducted

by Farmer Will who is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

The $5 school holiday movie screenings will feature family-friendly films and include special sensory screenings where the lights are kept on and the volume is turned down.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the program featured the hilarious animation Minions: The Rise of Gru [PG] and new-release animation Best Birthday Ever [G].

“We know how much-loved the Minions are, first appearing on our screens more than 10 years ago in the film Despicable Me,” Cr Binks said.

“It is so fantastic that a decade later, children can still enjoy these hilarious little yellow characters.”

Cr Binks said Best Birthday Ever [G] followed the story of Kalle’s long-awaited birthday which doesn’t turn out at all as he had planned.

“His little sister is ill, and no one has time to celebrate him,” Cr Binks said.

“He flees to his grandmother’s house in protest, but to get there he must walk through the woods.

“We encourage anyone who wishes to take up the special sensory screening sessions to do so - these are great for people with sensory issues or even families with very young children.”

Third Age Club news THE Third Age Club wish to express their sadness at the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite Thursday, September 22 being declared a public holiday, the committee have decided to go ahead with their Annual General Meeting on this date.

It will be held at 1.30pm and all members are welcome to attend.

Tea and coffee will be available after the proceedings.

of the Euroa Third Age Club attended the club’s monthly lunch on Thursday, September 8.

The lunch was hosted at the Euroa Hotel and those attending enjoyed good food and company.

The next Afternoon Melodies will be Thursday, September 15 at the club featuring Judy Duryea.

TENDER OPEN FOR LOCAL BRIDGE: Council is seeking engineers to complete a structural investigation of Kirwan’s Bridge.

Understanding the condition of Kirwans Bridge A TENDER is currently open for specialised professional engineers to complete a structural investigation of Kirwans Bridge.

Council allocated $100,000 in the 2022/23 Budget for the investigation which will seek to understand of the bridge’s condition and enable council to make the right considerations for the bridge’s future.

Council has worked alongside residents who make up the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel for the past year.

The panel provides considerable input into options regarding the future of the bridge.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said the input from the panel was invaluable.

“The panel has received advice from heritage and engineering experts who also provided input into the tender documentation,” she said.

“Council is grateful for the panel’s commitment to help us find the right solution so that we can ensure this historical bridge, which is highly valued by the local community and further afield, stays operational into the future.

“We know this is an important project that is close to the community’s heart and that is why council has undertaken a comprehensive engagement process which draws on the panel member’s local knowledge and expertise.”

nity Panel chairperson Darren Lyons said the panel continued to engage as widely as possible throughout the community and with other key stakeholders to ensure the right outcome for the bridge.

“Issuing the tender is another key step forward for this project and it will be important to engage the right specialist engineer,” he said.

Due to the current three tonne limit set on the bridge, reconstruction works to Weir Road, Kirwan’s Bridge, will begin soon, weather permitting, which will provide a suitable alternative route for heavy vehicles.

Tender applications for the structural investigation of the bridge close in six weeks.

Leadership program in Strathbogie THE 2022 Fairley Leadership Program Cohort will immerse in the Strathbogie region from September 1415 to learn more about the region’s challenges and opportunities.

The immersive has been co-designed and sponsored by the Strathbogie Shire, with the group hosted by the Nagambie CFA. “We’re excited for this year’s cohort to continue on their regional immersives, and I know they’ll come back with a huge bank of knowledge from leaders around the Strathbogie region,” executive officer of Goulburn Murray Community Leadership Nathan Bibby said.

“The Fairley program focuses a lot on an individual’s journey and skills with community leadership, and this week’s immersive will give them a chance to learn more about how Local Governments support community

development.”

The Strathbogie Region Immersive centres around four key objectives: • building a greater understanding and appreciation for key sectors in the Strathbogie region; • increasing knowledge around Local Government support in community leadership, and working collaboratively on priority projects; • increasing knowledge around governance and its importance from a community leadership perspective; and • continuing the personal leadership journeys of each participant.

“We’ve designed this immersive in collaboration with the local communities, to provide maximum value to our Fairley Leadership participants,” program and strategy manager of the Fairley Leadership Program Vicki Scott said.

“We’ll be exploring the

key sectors of the region, hearing from a range of local community leaders, and really building the capacity for our participants to work collaboratively with Local Governments on their community leadership journeys”.

The Fairley Leadership Program is Goulburn Murray Community Leadership’s flagship program which takes its cohort of future leaders on an immersive learning experience.

The program educates emerging leaders about the challenges and opportunities impacting on the Goulburn Murray region, equipping them with the leadership skills to make an impact.

TIME CAPSULE: The Euroa Gazette will be burying a time capsule at the Euroa Agricultural Show and want the community to help participate. The time capsule pictured was opened in 1985 at the Euroa Hospital.

AS part of our 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will be burying a time capsule at the showgrounds during the Euroa Agricultural Show on October 22.

The Euroa Gazette has purchased a 26-litre stainless steel time capsule for this event, which will be opened in 25 years on the newspaper’s 150th anniversary in 2047.

Businesses, schools, sports clubs, families and individuals of all ages are encouraged to submit something for this special occasion.

Contributions can be made directly to The Euroa Gazette office at 45-47 Railway Street, Euroa on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

All contributions are to be submitted to the office in an envelope no larger than A4 sized.

Ensure that the envelope is addressed to the intended recipients with name and

current address, and that your own name and address is written on the back of the envelope.

A gold coin donation towards the Euroa Agricultural Society will be required with all submissions.

Our generous community AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will continue to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks at the generosity of the community, focusing on the long-standing tradition of charity and

fundraising in the area.

Back in a war-time edition from May 4, 1943 there is an article about the ‘overwhelming success’ of an auction to raise funds for prisoners of war.

Fundraisers have been a consistent part of the region for decades, and have regularly been

included in editions of the Euroa Gazette.

In the 1970s, you can read several articles about fundraising for charitable causes such as the Red Cross, the Nagambie Hospital, fire victims and the Euroa Bush Nursing Hospital.

This tradition

charitable has never

slowed down across the region, with it still going strong today.

In 2014, the Strathbogie Shire residents joined together to raise more than $56,000 to fight cancer.

In 2017, a droughtrelief trip saw donated hay delivered to farmers

in Queensland.

In 2019, the Euroa Community Cinema hosted an organized event that raised nearly $7000 for brain cancer.

That same year, the Euroa Foodshare opened its doors along with several other charitable events.

This year, we have

seen fundraisers for causes such as MND, Cancer, Afghanistan, Euroa Hospital, mental health and much more.

The generosity of the community has been clear to see through 125 years of the Euroa Gazette and remains a powerful force today.

Nagambie pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

By DIANE GRANT IN May 2021, I sent a Nagambie Condolence book to Buckingham Palace to her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her family from the people of Nagambie.

The book was compiled due to the passing away of her beloved husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and included a personal sympathy letter.

I received a reply for each from Her Majesty’s Lady in Waiting stating how pleased her Majesty was to receive the condolences from so far away.

I included many photographs and signatures that I had collected in a month.

This time, I have compiled a Condolence Book to send to His Majesty, King Charles III, and his family, their people in the United Kingdom, the Realms and Commonwealth countries and the people that she reigned over for 70 years.

I want to express once again, the deep thankfulness for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for being our monarch so dutifully and regally and for being such a good human being and caring for so many people around the world on behalf of myself and Nagambie.

I am taking the book to the schools and pre-school and then

from Wednesday, September 14 will leave it at the Information for locals and representatives from community groups to sign it.

I will send it on to Buckingham Palace at the end of the month.

Queen Elizabeth has been reigning over Britain and the Commonwealth of nations nearly all my life.

My mother and father were married the same week as her and Prince Philip in 1947 and Prince Charles was born five months after I was.

My soldier husband swore allegiance to her when he joined the Australian Army in June 1966 and proudly carried out that oath for 20 years.

So I have loved and respected this amazing woman since I first watched her pass by in St Kilda Road, Melbourne, when she made her first visit to Australia in 1954 as the newly crowned monarch.

I have watched with interest all through her years on the throne since her Coronation and how she has lived her Christian faith.

Now many will give thanks for her loyalty, dedication, and faithfulness to her God and subjects all around the world.

During her reign she conducted herself with so much dignity, integrity and gave unending duty and

service nearly every day of her life in one way or another.

I admired that she was above party politicking.

Her Majesty always showed her love of her family and that this always went side by side to her royal role.

How she must have juggled her private and public life to do that.

I visited Buckingham Palace in 1998 and sat down in the throne room.

I also have been to Westminster Abbey a few times.

John and I watched the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in 2000 on our honeymoon.

Her majesty was away in Balmoral then on holiday.

We also visited Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace in Scotland and Ireland and again in 2012.

I realized the immense responsibility she was charged with since her coronation and how well she has lovingly and loyally carried out that role and was blessed to reign as our Queen for over seven decades.

Like many I saw over the past week when we watched the news and tributes from England and around the world, the deep bonds that were shown by not only her subjects but world leaders and

famous people.

The memories they had with her and many of us along with them will feel a great sense of loss.

In my life time she was not only a (Princess) daughter to King George VI and the Queen Mother, a sister to Princess Margaret, a wife to Prince Philip, then a mother to two children before she was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen of Australia and the Commonwealth, then a mother again to two more sons.

Later on we saw how she enjoyed becoming a grandmother, and great grandmother and I have admired how she made time for all her family as well as keep her role as Queen.

She has been a cherished sovereign to so many people in her 70 year reign of many countries in her Realm and will be sadly missed by so many countless people around the world.

My life has been enriched by her being our monarch and even if the non Monarchists, non royalists, or Republican Movement expect to push for Australia to become one they too, will mourn the loss of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II acknowledging her service and dedication in such a remarkable life. .

God bless Queen Elizabeth II and may she rest In peace now with her beloved Philip.

A shiny history for show THE Australian National Show and Shine will launch a book which records the 20-year history of the famous Euroa event at its show on Sunday, October 2.

With the first-ever Euroa Show and Shine conducted by Rob Asquith and friends in 2002, the actual anniversary would have taken place last year, if not for two COVID-caused cancellations.

Show and Shine vice president and media manager, Ray Read, has researched and compiled the book over recent months.

He has previously written and published three books about motor racing history.

“As the biggest annual event in Euroa, the Show and Shine deserves to have its story told, especially to the many exhibitors and spectators who turn up every year,” Mr Read said.

Many local people have been interviewed for the book.

TAHBILK COMMUNITY FESTIVAL David Andrews told the Gazette that the inaugural Tahbilk Community Festival on Sunday saw a variety of food stalls on-site catered for all taste and wine tastings were also in order, with Tahbilk’s fine range on display and another local winery Boxgrove vineyard, offering tastings and sales.

Sarah Gough of Boxgrove was very positive about the mature working relationship amongst the local wineries and how the ultimate goal was to promote the whole region, as a premium wine area.

with numerous activities for young and old to enjoy.

The ‘Snakebusters’ stall was not for the fainthearted.

If you were ‘game’ you could wear a Python necklace or the latest in ‘snake’ bangle.

When the crocodile made an appearance, a queue of kids appeared from nowhere.

Local musicians entertained throughout the day with some great music. The kids activity village was a hit too, with giant Jenga, soccer nets, cricket and craft.

The theme of the day, was all things environmental and sustainable. What they have done at Tahbilk in this regard, is admirable, and puts them ahead of the environmental curve.

It will be on sale at the information booth located close to the main stage area in Seven Creeks Park at the show on Sunday, October 2.

Royal documentary to be shown at seniors festival

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council will host a free morning tea and film screening for this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival on October 5, 2022.

The Princess (CTC) will screen at the Euroa Community Cinema at 10.30am following a free morning tea from 10am.

The film uses archival footage, showcasing the incredible life and tragic death of Princess Diana.

Turning the camera back on ourselves, it also illuminates the profound impact she had and how the public’s attitude to the monarchy was, and still is, shaped by these events.

Mayor Laura Binks said, as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival, council was also assisting local senior citizen groups to host their own events by providing funding.

“We are looking forward to supporting a variety of different events across the shire as well as our own event at the Euroa Community Cinema,” Cr Binks said.

“Council is committed to recognising the major statewide festival for Victorians aged over 60, which focuses on providing fun and good times with opportunities to participate in events and activities for free or low cost throughout October each year.”

In 2022, the Victorian Seniors Festival is turning 40 years and once again, this year the popular online performances will be available from this July.

PROBUS Euroa’s last meeting introduced Bernie Walker OAM as the most recent guest speaker, a man well known in the Euroa community.

Farmer, shearer, husband, proud father, a supporter and lover of country music, and a bush poet, Bernie has spent a lifetime promoting excellence in the shearing industry in Australia and beyond.

Bernie received the Order of Australia medal for his commitment to shearing and was inducted into the Australian Shearers Hall of Fame this year.

President Fred Jungwirth echoed everyone’s thoughts when he said it was an honour to hear Bernie speak formally about this aspect of his work.

Leaving school in year 10 in 1953, Bernie remembers his first days working on a farm, riding his bike to the shearing sheds while learning to shear and crutch sheep.

He was invited to join Apex in 1961, springboarding the opportunity for an Apex shearing competition involving up to 160 shearers in 4 classes, with a final competition for each class.

Bernie wrote reports on shearing competitions around the country for The Euroa Gazette.

This led to his writing for ‘Shearing’ magazine and judging competitions in every state.

He has refereed 12 world records.

He reflects that since his first visit in 1974, he has visited New Zealand over 50 times, amounting to more than a year of his life.

Bernie’s grandfather was also a noted shearer.

Bernie wrote a book, ‘A Test for the Best’, the true story of the ‘Golden Shears’ at Euroa.

He became involved with ‘Shear Outback’ in Hay, home of the Australian

Shearers Hall of Fame.

The 48 Inductees have had a tribute written by Bernie later produced on a CD. Fred played two of Bernie’s own poems recorded as songs.

Probus member Mary Steen thanked Bernie for his lifetime’s work and a fascinating talk.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB THE end of winter saw the “course closed” sign finally come down at the Euroa Golf Club, but very heavy conditions confronted the small field that entered the Monthly Medal Event on Saturday, September 3.

Paul Robinson showed that the very good golfers can handle any conditions winning the medal with 73 + 2 Net 75.

The rest of the field battled the heavy conditions and scarified and sanded greens.

Some Spring-like weather saw the mowers busy on the course this week and some optimism of a return to good conditions began to show.

15 Players competed in the Wednesday Stableford Competition which was won by Bill Wright on a comeback from Gaz Ritchie both on 36 points.

Another 37mm of rain late in the week reduced the Saturday field to just nine adventurous players. Ed Carracher off square had 33 points, one point clear of Matt Mills to take the prize. The rest of the field struggled with the conditions. Hopefully we see some drying weather as the course gets ready to burst to life in the Spring.

Around the Club much work has been done preparing for the P.I.A. Championships which the Club is hosting from 28 - 30 October. This will be a major undertaking for the Club. Work has seen the completion of eight new Cart Sheds for the six Members to use. The Dalhousie Coun-

try Team Squad has been selected with our own Matt Mills appointed Captain and Ed Carracher in the team.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB Wednesday, August 30 THE last day of winter gave us the true winter season and there was no golf competition.

How quickly the weather conditions can change. We had 18 players play a game of Stableford on the back nine.

The winner was Michael Nolan with 19 pts also Michael got N/P on the 13th.

It was the day of the Michaels seeing Michael Mansfield taking out N/P on the 16th.

Wednesday, September 7.

In near perfect conditions, we had 12 players, play a round of Stableford.

The winner of A and B Grades was Bev Brown with 36pts.

The winner of C Grade was Jane Bow with 33pts.

The nine hole competition winner was also Bev with 16pts.

18 hole balls down the line went to Bev 36pts, Jane 33pts and Sue Verge 29pts.

Nine hole balls down the line went to Bev 16pts, Jane 15pts and Irene Keogh also 15pts.

There were no N/P winners.

Conditions were great for golf; the game we played was stroke for the second round of the Club Championship and Monthly Medal.

The men’s winner was John Moore with 78, ladies winner was Ria Pearce also with 78.

Richard Eddy had 71 nett, Shae Vanderschoor 76 nett Dale Mc Intosh 77 nett and Steve Roberts also 78 nett.

Nearest the pin: 4th, Dale Mc Intosh, 17th Kerry Hewlett.

Putting was won by Richard Eddy with 24.

Jones Our visitors from Euroa Golf Club really adapted well to the course taking the majority of the balls which is perhaps an indication of our Annual Challenge next month, but boy do we enjoy a challenge.

Golf on Saturday 10th was played in damp wet conditions following heavy rains overnight. Consequently not many played but that didn’t stop Rylie Mc Donald shooting 73 to win.

Lineballs were won by Grant Pearce, David Kennett and Jack Mc Donald.

Nearest the pins: 4th Retained by the Club, 8th Shae Van der Schoor , 15th Rylie Mc Donald, 17th Beat Vander Schoor.

Putting was won by Rylie Mc Donald, men’s’ drive and pitch to David Kennett Ladies drive and pitch to Ria Pearce Straightest drive to David Kennett.

The Club Syllabus has a Vets Day on Thursday, September 15, that event may have to be postponed due to the forecast weather conditions.

It is advised to those that are interested in playing to perhaps contact the Club on Wednesday for advice.

Golf next Saturday September 17 is stableford with John Moore looking after proceedings.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB SATURDAY was the last round of the Club Championships and despite 32mm of rain over Thursday and Friday the course was in great condition.

As always, a massive thank you to our volunteers for their tireless efforts to make it so.

At the start of the round Jared Smith had a one shot lead over Stevie Donovan, and he maintained that lead at the turn.

They were all square after 13 holes but then Scoota knocked one in from off the green on 14 to take the overall lead for the first time.

They both birdied the 15th but disaster struck for Jed when he double bogied the 16th. Seemed the nerves were coming into play with both players bogeying the 17th and although Scoota also bogeyed the 18th, he had the score under the belt to claim back to back Championships.

The B grade “Bern Stevens Trophy” was looking like being really close with Matt Eddy, Dale and Alex Smith in hot pursuit of Shane Black who was unable to play on the day. They each had 42 on the front and it looked like any of the three could be scribing their name on the Bernard Stevens trophy. However, the back nine proved the undoing for all three and Shane’s posted score was enough to give him the B grade title.

Hudson Black had a huge lead in the C grade and was able to hold on to that quite comfortably and in so doing claimed the Junior club champion trophy as well.

Congratulations to our Club Champions for 2022 - Stephen Donovan, Shane Black and Hudson Black.

The Gold Medal (Medal of Medallists) was contested as

well with Tim Batten, Matt Eddy, Hudson Black and Jed Smith vying for the prize.

Jed’s 73 nett got him over the line to claim the Gold Medal for consecutive years.

Drive and Pitch on the seventh went to Scoota and that was the only one for the day.

On Sunday we had 13 players headed to Murchison to play in their re-launched Dargalong and Murchison Cup events. Despite being a bit wet, the course was very well presented and congratulations go to their hardworking volunteers.

We managed to clean up the trophies with the Men’s competition, the Dargalong Cup, being won by Alex and Lindsay Smith with a +seven and the ladies competition, the Murchison Cup, was then won by Lyn Carracher who partnered up with Euroa’s Michelle Thomson, but we still call her our own.

Well done to everyone who represented the club.

This Thursday the Ladies are hosting the Mabel Vearing Silver Salver and are looking for donations of cakes/slices please.

Saturday morning sees the first round of the Sub Junior Championships take place so hoping for a good roll up of juniors for that and the seniors will be playing a stableford round - hopefully the weather holds.

Finally, Committee Members are reminded of the meeting tonight - usual time and place.

Magpies’ reserves gallant in defeat EUROA FOOTBALL RESERVES OUR reserves team travelled to Kyabram hoping to continue on in the final series.

This was not to be - going down by 30 points.

When you look at the final scores most football followers would have thought it was a very convincing win to the Seymour team. Seymour were able to gain a good break on our team during the first quarter with the wind at their back - coming out full of confidence they were able to hit the scoreboard and go to the quarter time break with a thirty point lead. The pressure applied by the Seymour team caused our players to make many skilled errors by hand and foot.

Although the team went down, the writer feels that this was a courageous effort by a team which was missing a number of players who were unable to take their place due to various circumstances but had played for the club during the year.

A FUN DAY FOR ALL: Avenel Bowls Club welcomed with open arms over a dozen players, more onlookers and a few croquet players to their season opening day.

President Leanne did the opening speeches and Past President Dennis was asked to open the green with the first roll of the jack and a bowl.

We had a dozen bowlers in four teams on the green, & half a dozen onlookers, plus there were three people on the croquet court.

David S & Gerard R put in a big effort to get this area marked out in readiness.

Ross Withers from Euroa skipped for the winners with Ian Chanter and Tim Heckenberg; a tin of peaches

each for the players.

The cooler temperatures forced us in early to enjoy a terrific afternoon tea.

The major raffle of a lovely box of goods beautifully presented by Tegan at our Corner Store was won by Dennis Taylor, and minor prizes were won by Harry Daley and Ken Stanger.

SOCIAL Carpet Bowls continue at 7pm on Monday night.

This is a social outing to which everyone is invited. Our clubroom is nice and warm, and the added underlay (the old carpet from the footy club) has made a huge improvement to the way the bowls run.

Bowling with Babies - a program for Mums to come along and try

bowls - still working on a start date but Mondays in term four are looking good.

Jack Attack - can’t come soon enough, we’re just about full.

We encourage new bowlers to get involved with this, last year many discovered how much fun social bowls can be.

We will be continuing with the tidying of the gardens and surrounds on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10am when the weather permits.

These are pleasant mornings chatting and working together, and things are coming together ready for the season.

Thank you to the Shire following the announcement that we are to get a (Unisex) accessible toilet.

Local cyclist selected to represent state in national championship AVENEL cyclist Finbar O Sullivan has been selected to represent Victoria at the Junior Road Nationals Championship which takes places in Wollongong from September 13th to 15th. Finbar is one of just four cyclists chosen to represent Victoria in the under 17 time trial and road race.

Finbar’s selection follows a highly successful season on the road competing in the Victorian Junior Road Series.

This series runs from March until August and the top cyclists from across Australia compete in six three-stage tours across locations in Victoria, ranging from Mount Buffalo to Ararat.

At the conclusion of the series, Finbar finished as the top-ranked time triallist in Victoria and the second-ranked road cyclist, resulting in his selection for the state team.

Finbar races locally with the Seymour Broadford Cycling Club and is also a member of the Regional Academy of Cycling Excellence based in Bendigo.

The local Seymour club is fortunate to have many highly decorated riders in the club and they have provided great mentoring for Fin-

A typical week of training for Finbar involves approximately 400km on the bike, with two races usually built into the mix.

Finbar is looking forward to the experience of competing at the road nationals and contributing to the objectives of the Victorian team.

In January, he aims to build on his under 17 campaign by competing in the under 19 road nationals road race in Ballarat.

Even though he is competing at the highest level and is very goal-focused, Finbar loves riding his bike through the beautiful countryside of the Strathbogie and Seymour areas and loves the freedom of “just riding his bike.”

Alexandra’s Old Trout Opening Championship goes to Scott Towers THE Annual Alexandra Gun Club’s Old Trout Opening Championship was held at the Violet Town Shooting Complex on Sunday, September 11.

Hosted by the Euroa Clay Target Club, it was the club secretary, Scott Towers who prevailed shooting a fine 65/65 from Fred Heinze by one target in the final shoot-off. The Euroa members are very appreciative of this sponsorship that includes a fine barbecue lunch that was enjoyed by all.

Fred Heinze then went on to win the second event on the program, the Highlands Shield Championship which is part of the Team shoot held between Euroa, Alexandra and Mansfield.

The third event, the Trophy handicap was taken out by the club treasurer, John King who

managed 33/34 to edge past Walmer Club’s Les Comensoli.

Cr Hourigan opens bowls club season

By AUDREY MCINTOSH Euroa Bowls Club members awoke to a rather cloudy morning last Saturday, wondering if the opening day would go ahead, but the weather was kind and all was well when at 1pm the day was quite sunny and all were ready to begin the 2022-23 season.

President Richard Noble welcomed all to the greens, including CR Kirsty Hourigan and read a list of apologies, which included Anne and Ken Sutcliffe, Max Stevens, Charmaine Reid, Shane and Ken Drysdale, John Groat, Bob Whitelaw, Mark Saxon. He then asked Kirsty to open the season for the club and in doing so tshe said she was delighted to be there today to do the official opening on behalf of the community and said she was impressed at the immaculate greens and clubhouse, and that the shire had granted money to upgrade both.

She then declared the season for the Euroa Bowls Club open and wished all a good bowling time.

Our latest life member Libby Byrne then threw the first kitty and bowled the first bowl to set the scene for the day.

Thirty seven bowlers played one game then adjourned for afternoon tea, when President Richard again welcomed all present and gave some reminders of the difference

WHAT WENT WRONG: Rhonda Wickson looks less than confident in that bowl. in pennant play for this season as announced.

Saturday pennant divisions five, six and seven will play 21 ends instead of 25 and midweek four/ five will do the same. The club are starting to look into putting in a synthetic green in place of the grass Burton green but this will take a while to investigate as cost will be the factor.

Richard thanked Kirsty for coming to do the official opening and wished all bowlers good bowling for the day and season ahead.

Players then played another game of bowls before

coming inside to enjoy a friendly time together.

Winners for the day were determined by cards and they were lan South, David Wilson and Ken Byrne.

Raffle winners were Audrey McIntosh, Kristen Boyce, Pauline Naylor, Jan Sheargold.

There are lists on the boards for upcoming events in the region and closing dates for entries are coming up very shortly so please enter soon if you wish to play in these.

Pennant lists are on the boards also and midweek division three starts before the rest of the general

teams, so September 27 is the starting date and Tuesday October 17 for the division one and five.

Weekend pennant starts on Saturday, October 15 but two practice matches will be held before this, the first against Stanhope at Euroa on October 1. Violet Town will be included too and a BBQ will be held afterward, then on Saturday, October 8 Euroa will play at Shepparton Park. More details later.

The midweek pennant teams will have a practice match on Tuesday, September 20 at 10am and all players are welcome to

Avenel reserves make grand final KDFNL FINALS RESULTS AVENEL FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB IN a stunning show of finals football, Avenel’s reserves footballers have defeated Stanhope in the preliminary final on Saturday 60-33 to advance to the grand final against Lancaster at

Mooroopna Recreation Reserve at 12.25pm this Saturday.

Avenel under 15 netballers have defeated Merrigum 39 - 30 and in the preliminary final and will now progress to take on Shepparton East at Mooroopna court one at 11am on Saturday.

NAGAMBIE FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB Nagambie A grade netballers have been knocked out of their bid for finals glory in the preliminary final against Dookie United, which saw Nagambie beaten 43 - 37.

Dookie United will now take on Tallygaroopna in

the A grade grand final at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve at 2pm on Saturday, September 17.

Nagambie B grade netballers were also bested in the preliminary finals, losing to Merrigum 37-47.

Merrigum will now take on Tallygaroopna in the B

grade netball grand final at Mooroopna Rec Reserve at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Nagambie’s under 17 netballers were bested by Tallygaroopna 55-29 in the preliminary final.

Tallygaroopna will now take on Merrigum at Mooroopna Rec Reserve at

10am on Saturday.

Nagambie’s under 18 football side has defeated Dookie United in the preliminary final at the weekend, and will now progress to the grand final against Lancaster at Mooroopna Rec Reserve at 10.40am on Saturday.

Euroa A grade netballers knocked out of bid for glory GVFL NETBALL EUROA Mooroopna v Euroa First semi-final THE Euroa A grade netballers were coming off a great win against Echuca and were hoping to continue that success, but they were up against a very determined Mooroopna who had suffered a disappointing loss against Seymour.

Mooroopna got off to a quick start getting a buffer before the Euroa girls settled. It was a very fast paced game. Sophie Owen was

doing some great work in WD and Bridget Hill who stepped into the goal ring was shooting well. Bree Poole, the regular shooter, was not fit to play, but cheering hard from the sidelines.

Great defensive play from Tylah Marchbank and some lovely passages of play in the second term with Karly Wappett working hard and creating some movement in the attack zone.

However Mooroopna were picking off any loose

passes, and despite the hard work by Magpie defenders, the Cats’ goalers were getting plenty of opportunity to score.

The second half saw Euroa making every effort but unable to stop the drive of Mooroopna.

There were still some shining moments from the Magpies and never once did they drop their heads, but they were unable to continue their journey in the finals in 2022. It was a successful year for the Euroa A

Grade Netballers as making it to the finals in the GVNL is a wonderful effort and shows the way they have developed over the last couple of years giving those who came to support over the season some great netball to watch. We look forward to great things next year as Ellie Warnock has been reappointed as coach and hopefully most of the team members will be back in the black and white in 2023.

MAGNIFICENT spring sunshine welcomed the semi-finalists and a gallery of spectators who came to support the teams and watch their matches. They were rewarded with entertaining contests.

Terip’s Cindy Hayes and Rebecca Lyttle encountered a determined Mansfield Black partnership of Jenny Bell and Di Ellis.

Play was ‘next level’ as the women put on a master class of baseline hitting and powerful put aways.

The lengthy set also drew onlookers from the adjacent court and ultimately went to Terip eight-four.

Beside them Black’s Jenny Smith and Rhonda Carpenter began well despite their nerves and led Terip’s Phoebe McDermid and Jenny Martin early.

Tentatively the pair regained control after Terip levelled with them, then pulled away with precision placement and solid retrieving.

Black took the set eightthree.

Only one game separated the teams.

As the reigning premier found its range in the remaining sets they continued to toy with their challenger in lengthy rallies, unpredictable placement, and friendly banter.

Terip convincingly controlled the match.

After reaching the finals for their first time since entering the competition last year, Mansfield Black relished the opportunity to play Terip at last. Both home and away matches had been washouts.

Meanwhile at the US Open, in equally as exciting matches, Aussie giant-killers, Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomjlanovic had made it through to the men’s and women’s singles quarter finals.

Everyone enjoyed the contest, acknowledged each other’s precise shot making and laughed at comic moments.

After the match Black’s number one Jenny Bell said, “I’ve never had so much fun losing!”

Terip won five/43 to Mansfield Black one/20.

Euroa and Benalla met in the other semi-final and Euroa took the first two sets comfortably.

Euroa’s Chris Ellis, Sue Vaughan, Lyndall Bigland and Rowena Ellis overpowered the ladder leader.

Benalla’s Kate Campbell, Claire Sharp, Maureen Jewell, and Deb Siggers fought hard to gather games in the next sets, winning one eightfive and losing the other eight-five.

The lengthy contest saw Euroa winning the final pair-

For the past two years no finals have been played but in 2019 Euroa played Terip.

In a cracker match Terip won by merely one game for their fourth consecutive premiership.

The reigning premier will be tough to beat.

On Monday night MTA held its AGM in the clubhouse after two years of remote AGM’s.

Vice President Brendan Purcell chaired the meeting and simultaneously took the minutes.

In the absence of President Brendan Grant, Purcell delivered the president’s report and Tim Ross presented the Treasurer’s report describing the club’s sound financial position.

Robert Williams took the chair for the election of office bearers and the ‘spill and fill’ wittily described by Purcell, got underway.

In his absence, Grant was re-elected President, as was Jemma Blackall as secretary.

Tim Ross was re-elected as Treasurer, Deb Mims was re-elected as membership secretary, and Danny Cahill retained his club coach position.

Two new committee members, Matthew Daly, and Bianna Kelly joined the team of Bob Carpenter, Rachel Parsons, Sarah Walker, Robert Williams, and Rhonda Carpenter.

After the AGM formalities had been completed the new committee met to discuss the new season ahead and club operations.

Summer competition is set to begin mid-October and players need to have specified their preferred night to play by writing to mansfieldtennisassoc@gmail.com for team selection.

Euroa to take on Mansfield for a final chance at grand final berth GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS UNFORTUNATELY the Euroa senior football team was no match for a rampaging Echuca outfit on the weekend in their semi-final clash over at Mansfield.

The game started, well it actually hadn’t yet started, off on the wrong foot as key defender Adam Giobbi suffered a calf injury in the pre-match warm-up.

This meant that at very late notice Jarmyn Tremellen pulled on the boots and took Adam’s spot.

This also meant Jarmyn was not able to play in the Reserve grade side the next day - a huge sacrifice for his club and one that was very much appreciated.

With the unsettling news of the loss of Adam, Captain (both Marcus Varley and Jacob Gleeson - Co-Captains - were unavailable due to injury so our Vice-Captain stood up to the mark) Jett Trotter - playing in his 100th senior appearance for the club - gathered his troops together for one final pre-match speech.

Jett would go on to lead by example as he booted four goals in an attempt to lift his side throughout the afternoon.

Echuca burst out of the blocks, booting five goals to one in the first quarter then holding their own into the breeze in the second quarter to maintain this five-goal buffer going into the long break.

Coach Rowan and his team of assistants were looking at ways to get their side back into the match.

A number of positional changes resulted in Euroa getting more of the ball yet the Echuca side were relentless

Another even third quarter - four goals each - meant Euroa began the last quarter seven goals in arrears.

As this last-quarter played out, the Euroa team struggled to hold onto a very big, strong and confident Echuca side as they proceeded to outscore

What this means is that Euroa now face Mansfield in the Preliminary Final in Shepparton next Sunday, September 18 (2.35pm start).
