By RAY THOMAS NEST boxes made by local students in Euroa last year are housing some of nature’s wonderful animals, with phascogales and sugar gliders just a couple of species taking up the new homes.

The children worked extremely well last year, and the results have been fantastic.

The boxes were to provide homes for some special small animals that live in the bushland just south of Euroa, and it’s already working.

Checking the nest boxes on one property recently, we found nests in seven out of nine boxes.

One box had a phascogale mum, with two half-grown young ones.

Another box had a family of sugar gliders (three at least, all fast asleep).

The brush-tailed phascogales are particularly important, as these are a threatened species.

This wonderful result has only been possible with the enthusiasm of St John’s Primary School in particular, and several landholders who

have agreed to have some nest boxes in their bush areas.

Local wood workers Graeme Berry and Stuart Barton also helped greatly, with equipment for cutting the wood to size and tools for the students to work with.

It’s worth pointing out that this work has been successful for several crucial reasons; it

certainly isn’t guesswork.

The boxes are well designed, to make sure the roof will never leak water in winter.

The materials are durable, so won’t rot or split open like ply wood does.

The students did high quality work, so the boxes will last for 20 years.

Supportive of partial takeover

By DARREN CHAITMAN EUROA Health members appear set to vote in favour of a proposal that would see the operation of Euroa Health’s acute, urgent and imaging hospital services taken over by a governmentfunded health service, Goulburn Valley Health.

Most Euroa Health members appear to have a positive view of the proposal, which was recently endorsed by the boards of Euroa Health and GV Health.

“Based on the discussion at [an information session last week] and the general feedback we’ve been getting, it’s fair to say that members see the proposal as good for the community in terms of keeping hospital services local,” Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour said.

For the proposal to be adopted, 51 per cent of eligible Euroa Health members must vote in favour of it at a specially convened meeting on February 22.

If the proposal is endorsed by members, it would still require State Government approval.

“I think people should

pass it, because I think it’ll be the best for Euroa,” member Corrie Dingemans said.

“We’ll have more coverage of different types of health in Euroa, and I can’t see a problem with it.”

Mr Dingemans said he has spent time at GV Health in Shepparton and found the experience “quite good”.

Another member, Leanne Baker, thinks the proposal would be a “positive move”.

“It’s not sustainable, the current situation [where Euroa Health’s acute services are facing declining revenues], and it’s time the shire has some public beds,” she said.

Member Neville Harris agreed, saying he is “very much in favour of going public, if we possibly can”.

He said many years ago, he was president of a bush nursing hospital in Nyah district, and it was necessary to go through the same process to get government funding.

“There were a lot of bushing nursing hospitals created in Victoria in the 1920s,” he said.

“Subsequently, the health department increased their presence in the provision health, and a lot of these

little country bush nursing hospitals weren’t considered important enough to be replaced [by public hospitals].”

He said retaining community ownership of all of Euroa Health’s services is “a luxury we can’t afford”.

Another member, Nola Dudley, has expressed strong support for the proposal in a letter to the editor published in this week’s The Euroa Gazette.

Some Euroa Health members told this masthead they did not have a view because they were not yet fully aware of the facts relating to the proposal.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the proposal “would bring many benefits to Euroa and surrounding communities”.

“I’ve been supporting and advocating for services at Euroa Health for many years and I am now excited by the prospect of a partnership with Goulburn Valley Health,” she said.

The full extent of the State Government’s support for and involvement in the process leading up to the proposal has not been disclosed, but this masthead understands the State Gov-

Asked if Euroa Health foresaw a possible decline in membership if the proposal goes ahead, Ms Seymour said she is “not seeing anything to suggest that membership would decline”.

“In fact, members have told us they want to see membership numbers keep growing,” she said.

And even more critical is choosing the right tree, keeping in mind that the nest box must remain cool in summer, or gliders will die from heat exhaustion.

It’s the same as children in a hot car – you just can’t do it.

Choose the shadiest tree possible; one that feels cool when you walk under it.

Look for a tree with really dense leaf coverage, then look up through the tree canopy, and compare how much leaf cover there is versus space between the leaves.

That tells you how much sunlight and heat will come through in summer.

I often need to find several trees side by side, with interlocking crowns.

And lastly, place the box so it’s in the shade of the trunk during mid-afternoon sun (on the southeast side).

Sadly, many nest box projects overlook this last crucial choice.

The boxes just remain unusable for much of the year.

But the nest boxes at Euroa have been built and placed with great care on all of the above points.

The schools and the landholders can all be very proud of making a real difference for threatened species.

Regional housing a blind spot for Federal Government: Haines MEMBER for Indi Helen Haines has called regional housing a “blind spot” for the Federal Government in a speech about the housing challenges facing regional and rural Australia at the National Regional Housing Summit in Canberra on Friday last week.

“I don’t think that it is willful neglect of our governments, but I do think that regional Australia is a blind spot for the Federal Government,” she said.

“Addressing the housing crisis is one of the most important conversations for the nation right now and I am working to ensure the voices of regional Australians are front and centre.”

Dr Haines introduced her Unlocking Regional Housing Bill to the Parliament in September 2023.

The Bill specifically addresses the housing crisis in regional, rural and remote Australia, by making funding easier to access and requiring

the Minister to look at actions that secure at least 30 per cent of funding for regional, rural and remote Australia.

“In my meetings with the Housing Minister, I have urged her to commit onethird of the Housing Australia Future Fund to projects in regional, rural and remote areas; a fair share when almost one third of Australians live in the regions,” Dr Haines said.

“In my view, the government has missed the contex-

tual challenges of regional Australia’s housing shortage by lumping it alongside the urban shortages experienced by our city cousins, when we know the regional challenges are different.

“There is no ‘one size fits all approach’ to solving the housing crisis.

“Regional Australia needs a $2 billion Regional Housing Infrastructure fund, because councils need a leg up to build the sewerage and drainage, pavements and pipes

that will prepare land for new homes to be built.”

The one-day event held at Old Parliament House included a series of panel discussions, keynote speeches, workshops and “open mic” opportunities for attendees to share their local experiences of the regional housing crisis.

“The personal stories of people struggling to find appropriate housing and challenges with building costs are issues I have heard from people in Indi

also,” Ms Haines said.

“From the suburbs of Wodonga and Wangaratta to our busy tourism towns of Beechworth, Bright and Mansfield, there is a shortage of social and affordable housing and key worker accommodation in our region.

“Mortgage stress, rising interest rates and increases to rents are a constant concern for local people and they are a major factor of the cost-ofliving crisis being felt across the country.”

By DARREN CHAITMAN STRATHBOGIE Shire Council will spend $183,755 on a feasibility study to consider options for new council offices and hubs, with a council report describing the “poor condition” of council’s Binney Street offices and stating two of council’s operational depots “have become inadequate”.

At an extraordinary council meeting last week, interim administrator Peter Stephenson authorised council to engage Melbourne-based design company Workshop Architecture to conduct the study, after council invited tenders for the work in November 2023.

Mr Stephenson described how damage to council’s Binney Street offices after severe weather earlier this year highlighted that the study is “sorely needed”.

“This building was out of action; this room [the council

chambers] was out of action, because of water entering through the roof,” he said.

“There’s probably not a room in this whole building where you can walk, where you don’t have some trepidation that you may fall through the floor, to be honest.”

The council chambers are now back in action following significant damage depicted in photos provided by council.

The agenda report states that in addition to council’s Binney Street offices – which water enters “during rain events at many locations” – the feasibility study will examine Nagambie Library, operational depots in Euroa and Nagambie (where field staff work from), and “smaller satellite sites in Avenel, Violet Town and Strathbogie”.

The report states the study will deliver location options and preliminary designs for council offices and outdoor operations

hubs, with indicative costings for the presented options.

A council spokesperson said an outdoor operations hub is a place where technical, administrative support and field staff work together from.

Asked by this masthead when the issues referred to in the agenda report first became apparent, a council spokesperson referred to a building compliance assessment undertaken by council in late 2022.

“The report concluded the various buildings that make up Council offices at 109 Binney Street, Euroa were no longer suitable for users after being modified over time to meet the growing demand for office accommodation space,” the spokesperson said.

“The report concluded the buildings had generally reached their end of design-life.”

The Euroa Gazette has requested a copy of this report.

The spokesperson described

that at least three parts of the Binney Street offices are no longer in use due to poor ventilation, including an upstairs area that formerly housed 14 council officers, while “several other areas” are water-damaged.

The floor in the upstairs area is not at risk of collapsing, but it requires strengthening to level the sloping floor and take the weight of multiple desks, the spokesperson said.

The agenda report states that works resulting from the study will depend on “securing funding and grant applications”.

“This is a great start and if you fail to plan, you plan to fail – so, this is the plan,” Mr Stephenson said during last week’s meeting.

But after sharing a glance with council officers, the administrator hesitated and quickly corrected his comment.

“Or, this is getting the underpinnings of a plan,” he said.

We have commissioned them to conduct a community satisfaction survey on behalf of Council — these surveys are being undertaken across Victorian councils.

The survey is designed to assess our performance and to identify ways to improve our service delivery. Around 400 interviews will be conducted among a representative sample of Strathbogie Shire residents.

AFTER the State Government did not respond to three requests for comment from The Euroa Gazette regarding increased power outages over a four-week period, Minister for Energy & Resources Lily D’Ambrosio finally shared her thoughts last week in a series of tweets posted to X (formerly Twitter).

The online statement shared by Ms D’Ambrosio followed a meeting with Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland earlier last week.

“I want to be clear that maintaining a reliable sup-

ply of electricity is the responsibility of the distribution businesses and the recent reliability issues experienced by residents in Euroa, Nagambie, Violet Town and surrounds is not acceptable,” Ms D’Ambrosio tweeted.

“All Victorians expect to have a reliable supply of electricity and at the same time be assured that life saving bushfire prevention technology – installed as part of a recommendation from the Royal Commission into Black Saturday – can operate at full capacity.

“AusNet have implement-

ed immediate measures to improve reliability in the short-term and have assured me they are working to deliver medium and longterm solutions to directly address the issues on the Benalla line.

“I will hold regular meetings with them and the Australian Energy Regulator to ensure that these solutions are delivered.

“For those who have been left without power, Ausnet is obligated to provide compensation payments.

“If you have not received this payment, contact AusNet.”

POWER OUTAGE STORIES: Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has presented AusNet CEO David Smales and Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio with binders packed with the stories of local residents affected by recent power outages.

Ms Cleeland met with Mr Smales and Ms D’Ambrosio during the most recent sitting week of parliament.

Ms Cleeland said the meetings were productive and left her with a cautious optimism, but there is still a long road ahead.

“Following meetings with AusNet, I have been assured that some solutions and infrastructure upgrades will be presented in the coming weeks,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It remains to be seen if these solutions will make a tangible difference to the current system and its unreliability, however I was glad to hear that AusNet and their CEO David seemed to take

the matter and the concerns of our community seriously.

“I also received assurances from the energy minister that she will be treating this matter extremely seriously and will help working towards a positive resolution for the region.”

During both meetings, Ms Cleeland shared a binder featuring all the personal stories that residents had shared about the outages, including information from recent petitions.

Ms Cleeland was unable to share all stories with this masthead for privacy reasons, but has shared several anonymous examples.

One resident told of how her husband is unable to get a good nights’ sleep and faces health risks during power outages, due to his reliance on a CPAP machine.

Another resident said they lost over $1000 worth of fresh meat from their family’s homegrown, organic

pasture-raised animals.

“No amount of compensation can change that,” the resident said.

Others shared stories of lost wages, adverse health effects and significant losses in business earnings.

Late last month, AusNet spokeswoman Karen Winsbury told this masthead that AusNet had a “dedicated team of experts working full time” to find permanent, long-term solutions to fix the region’s unreliable power supply, following a decline in reliability on the Euroa-Benalla powerline.

In a letter to Indi MP Helen Haines, Mr Smales also stressed that AusNet is working on long-term solutions.

“Local generation, storage and micro-grids… form part of our consideration set but it will take some time to confirm what is viable from an operational and safety perspective,” he wrote.

Local schools struggle amid statewide staff shortages

EUROA Primary School and Euroa Secondary College are among schools across the country and state struggling with teacher and staff shortages.

Euroa Primary School principal Kim Flack said while all full-time roles at the school are currently filled, they are seeking parttime staff including a tutor, a health and PE teacher, and a language teacher, despite these positions being advertised for over two months.

She said the school also does not currently have full capacity for their wellbeing staff and teacher aides.

Highlighting the issues faced by schools across the state, Ms Flack said the shortages create an unsustainable situation for existing staff.

“Whenever something’s not staffed, it falls back onto the staff that are already here, so lots of the expert staff that are here are doing two or three jobs while we’re still trying to recruit those other parts,” she said.

“Across the state, it’s just not sustainable.

“Someone that’s working full time, they can’t be asked to work harder or work more

“It’s very much about plugging holes and filling gaps, and then trying to reprioritise.

“So, something that might have been nice for the students to be involved in, sometimes that has to go to the wayside because you can’t staff it.”

Ms Flack said teachers can also miss out on professional development opportunities, because staff shortages prevent them from being able to leave the classroom to observe another class.

In addition to her responsibilities in leading the primary school as principal, she is personally handling the health and physical education program while the PE teaching position remains unfilled.

Victorian Public Service Commission data shows the number of non-casual school employees to leave government schools has risen significantly since 2018.

On Friday last week, 1405 jobs were being advertised by the Victorian Department of Education in the catego-

ries of teacher, leading teacher and education support.

The figure does not account for unsuccessful advertisements which have been taken down.

Euroa Secondary College principal Leanne Winfield said while the high school’s teaching positions were filled, the school was still seeking a mental health practitioner.

She said the school was in the process of seeking support from Headspace due to the position remaining unfilled.

“Wellbeing is a key part of the sponsored services we provide students,” she said.

“Particularly after COVID, I think it’s important to have access to counselling services.

“It is a key part of the department’s platform for learning that students need to be well before they learn, so wellbeing and learning go hand in hand.”

EUROA’S most valuable asset – the acute hospital – is at an alarming crossroads.

The options are: a) close the acute hospital, or b) GV Health takes over the acute side of Euroa Health.

The board has been researching government funding for many, many years.

Governments don’t fund private hospitals.

It is now time to become a public hospital for the acute hospital.

A takeover by GV Health is a lifeline for the continuing of an acute hospital in Euroa.

Strathbogie Shire is the only local government area in Victoria without a public hospital.

Euroa Health will still have aged care

and other services, such as gym and a swimming program.

I strongly urge my fellow Euroa Health members to vote for the opportunity this presents.

Come to the meeting on Thursday, February 22 and place your vote.

Librarian Rebecca could not be more gracious RECENTLY I was asked to paint a picture of one of our Australian icons, the kookaburra, for a young German lady to take back to Germany in February.

As my memory over time has faded a little, I thought I must do a picture as accurate as possible of our laughing bird.

So, a visit to our wonderful library solved that.

Rebecca, the new librarian, could not have been more gracious.

The print-out she did for me is great.

Parliament starts again for 2024 IT was an incredibly busy week being back at parliament for the first time this

year – but I was extremely pleased to discuss matters that are so important to our community.

I held meetings with both the AusNet CEO and the Energy Minister to discuss the unacceptable power outages in our region, giving me the opportunity to share hundreds of stories directly from our community.

I have been assured that we will see a clear plan for upgrades to the power supply infrastructure in the coming weeks.

I met with the Agriculture Minister to discuss the need for more flood recovery funding, and discussed regional sporting grants with the Community Sport Minister.

I spoke on a variety of bills, including one calling for stronger building regulations to protect consumers – and another that is set to improve the operation of Service Victoria.

I also raised several questions coming directly from the community – including about road maintenance, biosecurity, child safety, farm break-ins, and transportation.

This is just the start for 2024 – I look forward to continuing representing our region, and your needs, every day.

Pink Stumps Day raises funds to fight breast cancer Nagambie g Cricket Club has raises $ $25k for foundation over 2 yyears NAGAMBIE Cricket Club has raised thousands of dollars for the Jane McGrath Foundation and their Breast Care Nurses at their second annual Pink Stumps Day. Across the two years, the work of Sharay Slivarich and the Nagambie Cricket Club has raised $25,000 for the foundation.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland, a guest at the event, thanked those who organised the event and spoke about the crucial work that breast care nurses do throughout the state.

“The Pink Stumps Day was a truly incredible and important event, organised by some inspiring local women like Sharay Slivarich,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I hope everyone involved in the event and all those that donated understand the positive impact they are having on women’s lives.

“While health services across the state continue to need all the support they can get, the Jane McGrath Foundation provides such an essential service to prevent women going through breast cancer without the specialised support of a breast care nurse.

“We are lucky to have a McGrath Breast Care Nurse located in Benalla – and more in neighbouring areas like Shepparton and Wangaratta.”

Ms Cleeland said the statistics regarding breast cancer in Australia were sobering.

“Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women in Australia with one in seven women being diagnosed in their lifetime,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Fifty-seven people will be diagnosed every day, and sadly this number is rising.

“While survival rates are im-

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL: Last week I had the honour of taking the Nagambie St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School foundation students, grade six, and the whole school assembly photos.

I took their 2024 pics for the last time as I plan to hang up my press camera in June 2024.

I have taken over the years many photos there that have included Book Week, the whole school’s end of year graduation masses and awards, grade six graduations, ANZAC and Remembrance Day observances, school concerts, grandparents and special visitors days, POUR and World Day of Prayer church photos, and on many more occasions.

The many happy memories I have gained at the school I will cherish for the rest of my life.

It has been a delight to capture a pictorial history of the school each year.

Thank you Nagambie St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School students, staff and families for all that you have given me over the years after I moved to Nagambie in 2001.

Unusual skies in recent weeks just a coincidence: Bureau

By DARREN CHAITMAN RESIDENTS in Euroa and Nagambie have noticed many interesting skies over the last month – capturing at least four examples of unusual skies and cloud formations in recent photos – but the Bureau of Meteorology has said there is no common factor linking these striking backdrops.

“Awesome photos – the folks around Euroa and Nagambie have been lucky to see all of these clouds in quick succession, no doubt,” Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said.

“There isn’t any linking factor between the four photos, it is more of a luck of the draw, with people being in the right spot at the right time and getting their cameras out.”

He said a photo taken in Euroa on January 15 appeared to

Sure enough, the picture had preceded a thunderstorm in Euroa that day.

“The photographer appears to be underneath the cloud anvil, this is where the cloud grows so high that it reaches a layer in the atmosphere that it can’t move through, and instead spreads out in a distinctive anvil shape,” Mr Hines said.

“You need a day conducive to thunderstorm development to have a chance to see these clouds, and this doesn’t appear to be linked to the other cloud images.”

He said similar weather conditions could have led to the

pictures taken in Nagambie on January 23 and in Euroa on February 4.

“Both are variations of the same midlevel clouds, showing moisture in the atmosphere at a similar height,” he said.

“The one with the moon poking through [Nagambie on January 23] is called ‘alto cumulus’, while the organised rows [Euroa on February 4] are a variation of this cloud, known as ‘alto cumulus undulatus’.

“They both require moisture and upward motion at the same altitude, but given they occurred nearly two weeks apart, they wouldn’t have been a direct result of the same weather situation.”

The Euroa Gazette has previ-

ously reported on Mr Hines’ explanation of a picture taken on January 12 in Nagambie, which depicts anticrepuscular rays.

“This can occur with almost any cloud, causing the breaks in the sun’s rays,” he said.

“There are plenty of weather situations which could lead to this, it’s just a matter of having everything aligned, and getting lucky at the right time of day when the sun is low enough.”

So there you have it: The Euroa Gazette might have its head in the clouds, but full marks must go to the BOM for its commitment to humouring this masthead.

NOT even the hot sun beating down on about 2500 Violet Town Market revelers could dispel the love in the air on Saturday, as couples posed in romantic photos ahead of Valentine’s Day at the market’s new photo-booth.

Violet Town Market committee member Vicki Gregg, who decorated the love-themed photo-booth, said the committee is planning to decorate the booth with a different theme every month from now on.

“The Easter one [next month] will have some interesting natural foliage around a paper mache rabbit, with an egg spilling out chocolate Easter eggs,” she said.

“And the month after, which is April, we will probably be looking towards representing ANZAC and remembering and respecting that tradition, and Mother’s Day will follow on from that.”

Ms Grigg said the photobooth was built last year by Violet Town Men’s Shed,

with “artistic design support” from committee member Di Peters, who was the driving force behind getting the photo-booth done.

Violet Town Market committee chair Kate Atkin said the committee wants the photo-booth to become a focal point for the monthly market.

“Now that we have it, we’re going to utilise it and make it prominent and important to the market,” she said.

“This one was always good because it’s with your special person.”

The decorated booth is set to become the latest feature of the stunningly successful market, which has run since 1978 and attracts 2500–3000 people on an average month, according to the market committee.

“It’s vital to our town,” Ms Atkin said about the monthly event.

“Whatever money we make from the market, goes back into our community.”

Violet Town Music Festival to return for first time since 1990s THE Violet Town Music Festival this weekend is set to enter the 21st century with a bang, returning for the first time since the 1990s with a line-up full of local talent, as well as one international act.

The entry fee is whatever you can afford for the nonprofit, grassroots festival two-day festival this Saturday and Sunday.

Canadian troubadour Scott Cook and his sweetheart Pamela Mae form the festival’s feature act.

Scott is an amazing storyteller and songwriter.

His songs focus on his recollections of travels, his adventures and his musings.

The duo features guitar, double bass and mandolin, with emotive vocals.

Australian Celtic royalty Saoirse will also be taking to the stage for two sets.

Bern, Ant and Sile bring to the stage beautiful harmonies, guitar, violin and stories as well as laughter and fun and the ability to take us all to Ireland.

Inspiring women to headline International Women’s Day event COUNCIL will host an event for International Women’s Day at Tahbilk Winery recognising local women on Friday, March 8 from 10.30am to noon.

Held annually, International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #InspireInclusion.

The aim of the IWD 2024 #InspireInclusion campaign is to forge a more inclusive world for women.

Council’s morning tea event at Tahbilk’s Homestead Private Gardens will feature local guest speakers Hayley Purbrick and Emily Quattrocchi.

Hayley has a background in environmental sustainability and marketing, working with the agriculture, food and beverage sector and the communities who support them.

EMILY: Emily Quattrocchi is a short film director and loves helping others in the disabled community.

She is a fifth-generation family member of one of the oldest winemaking families in Australia.

In 2021 she was recognised for her progressive environmental work by the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival as “Sustainability Legend”.

Emily is a short film director, having directed two short films in 2023 and an award-winning documentary in 2019 which follows the journey of her hospital experience after becoming

paralysed.

With a love of helping others in the disabled community, Emily volunteers her time helping people who have been recently injured and uses her YouTube channel to raise awareness and provide more information to help the disabled community.

Earthquake spooks Longwood A MAGNITUDE 2.6 earthquake hit Euroa on Friday night according to VicEmergency, but Facebook commenters in Euroa appeared not to have noticed the earthquake, while it was felt by Longwood residents.

The incident followed earthquakes reported in Melbourne and Leongatha earlier the same day.

On the Euroa Community Noticeboard Facebook page, many Euroa residents said they did not notice anything and appeared surprised to receive a phone notification regarding the earthquake from the VicEmergency mobile app.

“Earthquake notification????” posted Kerry Deans Cooper.

“Didn’t feel anything in Euroa,” Eric Southy responded, echoing several other comments.

“Felt it in Longwood – was like Pucka on a big day of explosives practice,” Donna Stewart chimed in.

Wendy Parsons said she heard a “bang” in Longwood East but did not feel anything.

“Felt in Longwood, actually thought it was an explosion on the highway though not a quake,” Shaun Petersen said.

Farmers urged to monitor hay CFA is urging farmers to ramp up their hay maintenance for the remainder of the season, following a surge in haystack fires, with CFA responding to more than 50 since November.

CFA has responded to 29 haystack fire incidents in Victoria’s north west region and 12 in the west region.

The rise calls for the agriculture sector to monitor the moisture and temperature of their hay more regularly, to store in separate stacks and in sheds away from farming equipment and structures.

A recent haystack fire of over 1000 hay bales in Arapiles on

CFA District 17 Commander Lindsay Barry said spontaneous combustion is the leading cause of haystack fires in Victoria and just one damp bale is enough to ignite a whole stack.

“We are currently in the storage phase of hay season, and there are some contributing

factors that lead to ignition,” Mr Barry said.

“Unfortunately, at the beginning of the season, some bales weren’t produced to industry standard, and were stored away with too much moisture.

“Green or damp hay is susceptible to overheating, so those two in combination will make a fire.”

He said due to the significant rain we have received during summer, haystacks that were neither placed inside a shed nor covered with a tarp have been considerably exposed.

“Water and hay don’t really mix, especially when they stack together,” Mr Barry said.

“This creates organic decomposition which produces heat, and you end up with a hay fire due to spontaneous ignition.”

Having experienced something similar this time three years ago, he recalls farms received over 100mm of rain in one storm hitting their haystacks, and a trail of fires as a result.

Goulburn Valley Water recruiting for new customer panel GOULBURN Valley Water is calling for customers to provide feedback and have their say on future projects and priorities by registering an expression of interest for a new customer panel.

The Customer Accountability Panel will provide a customer voice to reflect annually on progress across the 2023-28 Price Plan, which sets out GVW’s key priorities and projects for the next five years.

GVW managing director Steve Capewell said the new panel would be a continuation of the work achieved by customers as part of the previous 2018-23 Price Plan and during consultation and

development of the current plan.

“Our customer panels have provided some really important insights and valuable feedback, and we’re committed to continuing to have a customer voice as we progress through our current five-year plan,” Dr Capewell said.

“We are keen to work with another group of customers who will help us review progress on our commitments, and also contribute their views on future projects over the next couple of years.

“We genuinely want to engage broadly and deeply and so we encourage any customers with an interest in our water future to register their interest in selection

on the panel.”

The new panel will be drawn from GVW’s 54 towns and will include representation from homeowners, tenants, businesses and future customers.

It will also include members of the 2018-23 Annual Performance Forum and Customer Carbon Advisory Group to create a balance of fresh insights and prior experience.

ECAG to host Clean Up Australia Day THE Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) will be hosting Clean Up Australia Day this year.

All seniors are welcome to attend activities they could be interested in.

If enough people are interested, we can look at a time for indoor bowls to commence.

Pam and Merv Shepherd set to celebrate 60 years of marriage Couple p met at YMCA hall dances in Bendigo g

By DIANE GRANT B AUSTRALIANS are learning to celebrate milestones in their lives, especially wedding anniversaries of some length, which indeed should be celebrated and acknowledged.

On Thursday, February 15, Nagambie’s Pam and Mervyn (Merv) Shepherd will celebrate their diamond anniversary, marking 60 years of marriage.

The couple’s two children, Michelle and Dean, who have blessed their parents with 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, congratulate them on being able to celebrate 60 years of marriage.

The couple said they planned to enjoy an anniversary meal at the Nagambie Rowing Club.

Pam Ashman was born and grew up in Eaglehawk and Merv was born and raised in Bendigo.

The young couple met at two dances held in the YMCA hall in Bendigo.

They courted for two years and tied the knot at the West Methodist Church in Eaglehawk on February 15, 1964.

Mervyn worked for the

Victoria and Vi t i Railways R il d served d in many country stations during his career of many decades working for the state country rail transport service.

They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Dean, and in 1978 the family moved to Nagambie, where Merv worked at the Nagambie Railway Station.

They have lived near the station ever since.

In 1990, the Nagambie Railway Station fire caused the building to be demolished and Merv went to work at the Murchison station until his retirement in 1993.

Pam has been an avid Carlton Football club barracker for over 70 years and Merv has followed Collingwood since he was 12.

Merv and Pam for many years helped compile the A4 photocopied Nagambie Community Voice newsletter under the auspices of Diane Proud and her team until it began to be printed as a fortnightly newspaper a few years back.

Merv was well known as a volunteer car and small bus driver for the Shire, transporting folk to Melbourne and to swimming sessions.

He was also H l a member b of the Nagambie CFA then transferred over to the Wirrate Fire brigade a while later.

Pam could often be seen selling raffle tickets for fundraising causes.

When asked what they think are some reasons for their long marriage, they both replied, “work together; help each other.”

“We hardly ever fight,” Pam said.

Merv agreed.

“We have reasonable discussion and we have and some good and bad days,” he said.

“But we work through them together.”

They have been fortunate to have a close family and reasonable longevity and are thankful of the life they have shared together.

The fourth instance of graffiti, removed on Tuesday, displayed the “N word”, a derogatory term for black people, and a Nazi swastika.

The four walls which received fresh coats of paint were also covered with graffiti that did not display strongly offensive language or symbols.

As of Monday morning this week, no new graffiti had been scrawled over the freshly painted walls.

Euroa Police is investigating the neo-Nazi graffiti.

FOUR of the walls at Euroa Railway Station have been given fresh coats of paint

by V/Line workers after the station was targeted over two weeks with graffiti displaying neo-Nazi symbols and racist messages.

On Tuesday last week, V/ Line workers painted over two graffiti-covered walls of the pedestrian underpass accessible from Railway Street, as well as two other graffiti-covered walls near the underpass.

It was the fourth time V/ Line workers removed graffiti from the station within a two week period.

Janine Brooks takes honors at North Eastern Riding Club show

By ABBIE HANSON THE North Eastern Riding Club held their HRCAV horse show at Ruffy Recreation Reserve recently.

Many competitors supported the show, local riders as well as far as Echuca and Yarrawonga.

The Saturday highpoint winner was awarded to Janine Brooks on Kenman from Benalla ARC. Sunday’s show was hosted by Ruffy ARC and their highpoint was won by NERC member and local to Euroa Sharon Andrews on Zontario.

Since 2018 and the sad passing of local horsewoman Courtney Horwood NERC and Ruffy clubs have held the prestigious Courtney Horwood Memorial Award

who is the highpoint combination to compete over both days of showing.

This year it was won by Rebecca Todd on Isle of Rylands, who was surprised but extremely grateful to win this award and remembers Courtney fondly when she first started competing her horse Ryley.

On Saturday evening NERC held a monster raffle where all proceeds are donated to Peter Mac hospital where Courtney spent a lot of time.

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES MIDWEEK Pennant two weeks ago played at Hilltop was lost by one point, 61-62, 3-13, costing us first place on the ladder but it was a cracker of a game in warm but pleasant conditions.

Last week (6/2) we were at home to Merrigum.

We won 67-52, 12-4.

Currently second on the ladder we’ll try for a good win in our last game to regain top spot.

The weekend team played at home against Shepp Park last week, and had a loss 5867, 2-14 which may have cost us finals action.

Friday night we have the final of the Mixed drawn pairs competition being played, plus barefoot bowls.

We’ve already enjoyed two very warm Jack Attack nights; seeing 14 teams enjoying themselves.

Get down at 6pm for barbecue snags and onions to start, we start the two games of five ends as soon as we can after the netballers and footballers arrive.

The raffle draws at half time are much anticipated.

I can say I was pleased with my game, but stalled at 26 ends and failed to score over the last five ends, to go down 24-25.

By GREG BLATCHFORD IT seems hard to believe but we have reached the final round of both Midweek and Weekend Pennant.

We have three sides that will participate in finals actions and two others that still have a “mathematical possibility” however the odds are stacked against us.

In Weekend Pennant two points from the final match will ensure that both our division four and division six sides finish in second spot whilst victory against Mooroopna Golf will also secure our division four midweek side second spot and the double chance.

Midweek Pennant: Division one was defeated by a strong Kyabram side and now must win all three rinks against Shepparton Park along with Kyabram and Tatura Hilltop sharing the points to regain fourth place on the ladder.

Division four lost to Shepparton Golf while division five defeated Tatura Hilltop by two shots to keep our faint finals hopes alive.

In the final round both division one and division six take on Mooroopna at home whilst division four travels to Eildon, by bus, for a game likely to commence at 11am.

GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON FIFTY men played the second round of the Nolan Trophy on Saturday.

Perfect summer conditions with the greens running nicely, excellent scores were recorded in both divisions.

Rick Brodie broke the 80 barrier to record a Net 68 and win division one while Lachie Robinson Net 66 shot the best score of the day to take division two, one shot ahead of Charlie Watson with 67.

Glen Langlands had 68, C Murray and Paul Redfern 69.

Paul Robinson had 68 off the stick which his plus two handicap turns into 70 which is superb golf.

Andrew Steen, Chris Burke and Stephen Lister were all below their handicap with Net 71.

Bulldog North East Electrics were the sponsors for the day.

A field of 26 players including multiple visitors from Cobram Barooga played our course in the Wednesday Stableford round which saw the ever smiling Charlie Walker post a winning 37 points one ahead of Peter Ellis on 36.

Several players, including Plugger had 35.

Paul Redfern and Plugger shared the two ball prize money while all the swindle money went home to Cobram with our visitors.

The second round of the Keith Seeber Twilight event was played Friday afternoon.

Next Saturday sees the

third round of the prestigious Nolan Trophy honour board event.

The unofficial leaderboard has the first round winner of Richard Eddy on top on 138, one shot clear of Charlie Watson on 139.

Keith Seeber is third on 144 ahead of Brendan Redfern and Sam Mills on 145 tied for fourth place ahead of Scott Watson 146, Frank O’Connor and Dav Mackrell and Peter Ellis all on 148.

The rest of the field one more than 10 shots off the pace, so the winner is likely to come from the first six.

All eyes will be on Richard Eddy to see if he can hold his lead for the three rounds or will the fast improving Charlie Watson or the experience of the Silver Fox get him over the line.

Good to see many visitors and great for players getting to enjoy summer golf at its best over the weekend.

By DAVID LOVE SCORING was good as was the course at the Nagambie golf club on Sunday, hot summer conditions continued with a southerly breeze gusting up throughout the round making the day quite comfortable.

Two top grade scores of 43 points were returned on the day with Murchison golfer Bob McAdam getting the nod on countback ahead of longtime Nagambie member the notorious Alby Seenan.

McAdam started his day well with 20 points to open his account on the front nine but a closing back nine of 23 sealed the deal for him to take home The Seymour Club

winning matchday voucher.

It was great to see Alby Seenan back atop the leaderboard, a player you can always count on producing incredible scores across the season, third place went to a resurgent Phil Neville finding form with a 40-point result.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Roberts flighting a crisp iron up to the eighth, Harold Rayner showing some game from the 13th and our days winner Bob McAdam puting the cherry on top on the 16th.

Leila Creevey selected for Murray Bushrangers 2024 girls team

By DAN GODSMARK FORMER Euroa Junior footballer Leila Creevey has secured a coveted spot in the Murray Bushrangers girls’ team for 2024.

The talented left-footer, known for her classy style on the field, made the strategic move to Shepparton United from Euroa Junior Football Club to participate in the girls-only competition.

Creevey’s journey in football has been marked by notable achievements, beginning with her formative years at Euroa where she honed her skills.

Her crowning moment came in 2022 when she clinched a grand final victory with her under 14s team against Seymour, showcasing her prowess and determination at an early age.

Over the past two years, Creevey has continued to impress at Shepparton United, consistently demonstrating her skill and commitment to the sport.

Her standout performances caught the attention of selectors, earning her a spot in the under 16s

Murray Bushrangers team.

Last year, Creevey represented the Murray Bushrangers in the V-Line Cup festival, where her exceptional run-and-carry style dazzled spectators and cemented her reputation as a rising star in the game.

Longwood Lawn secures second place with convincing win

By CAROLINE KEENAN THE penultimate round of the season produced some of its best tennis with close matches resulting in significant ladder reshuffles.

Longwood Lawn dug deep to consolidate its second spot on the ladder with a ninegame win over Benalla Lawn Green.

The men, Bede Redfern, Jacob Tarran and Brent Moore did the heavy lifting to win all their sets and all the mixed.

The ladies had a tougher afternoon but scored enough games to help get their side

over the line.

The final score was Benalla Lawn Green 52 to Longwood Lawn 61.

Gooram’s good fortune in recent weeks ground to a halt when it came up against ladder leader St Paul’s.

The St Paul’s women played out of their skins to drop just six games across the three sets.

The final score was St Paul’s 68 to Gooram 34.

Euroa Lawn has conceded its third spot on the ladder to Gardens Gold after going down in a tight encounter.

Euroa’s under 16s finish strong with dominant victory in final game A GRADE

By JACK WILSON EUROA A grade played host to Northerners at the Friendlies Oval in Round 12 of the Haisman Shield.

Captain Scott Hamilton won the toss and elected to bat first on a nice pitch made for batting.

Openers Scott Hamilton and Declan Redfern started the innings off carefully, but it was undone when Hamilton was caught, leaving the score at 1/19.

Nic Hill joined Redfern at the crease and played excellent shots in their 106-run partnership over almost 30 overs.

Following Hill’s dismissal for 51 and Redfern for 69, a middle-order collapse saw Euroa lose 4/32, leaving the score at 6/158.

Cameron Armstrong and Andrew Squires fought back with a 40-run partnership before Armstrong was dismissed for 44, with the score at 7/198.

Euroa lost their last three wickets for 23, ending the innings at 221 after 66.1 overs.

With 10 overs left in the day’s play, Euroa got the ball swinging both ways, with Walter Jackson and Vaughan Kirk nabbing three late wickets before stumps were called. Northerners will resume next week at 3/35, still 186 runs in arrears, with Euroa needing only seven wickets to win the game.

By JACK WILSON EUROA travelled to Shepparton East to take on Central Park/St Brendan’s in Round 13 of the D Grade comp.

Captain Connor McCombe lost the toss, with Central Park/St Brendan’s

opting to bat first on a flat wicket, which proved great for batting.

Euroa’s bowlers made Central Park/St Brendan’s openers work hard for the first 10 overs, until the batters started to break the shackles and hit the Euroa bowlers all over the park.

Finally, in the 35th over, Connor McCombe broke the huge opening partnership of 215 runs.

McCombe got two more wickets at the end of the innings.

Central Park/St Brendan’s ended their innings 3-259.

Euroa got their innings off to a blistering start, with Justin Dimond smashing five boundaries before being bowled after a 40-run opening partnership with Leo Murphy. However, as Euroa continued to chip away at the runs, the run rate started to climb.

Euroa finished the run chase 97 runs short of the target set by Central Park/St Brendan’s.

Some shining lights from the innings were Luke Gilliland and Nick Brodie’s 41-run partnership, which included the game’s only six off the bat of Brodie.

Next week, Euroa is at home to ladder leader Pine Lodge at Memorial Oval.

The opening bowlers for Euroa Walter Jackson and Archie Wilson applied the blow torch straight away to the Mooroopna lads and it was not long before Archie sent the first wicket back to the Pavilion, with regular wickets falling, Euroa boys could sense a victory.

The fielding was at a very high standard with no catches being dropped and a run out been executed.

Mr Brightside claims fifth group one victory

By DAN GODSMARK MR Brightside clinched his fifth group one victory in a thrilling comeback at Caulfield on Saturday, marking the Hayes family’s eighth C.F. Orr Stakes triumph.

Despite entering the

race as the $1.80 favorite, the superstar gelding encountered a slow start, jockey Craig Williams had to work diligently to position Mr Brightside into fifth amid the swift pace set by Buffalo River and Pride Of Jenni.

With Williams urging him on, Mr Brightside launched a remarkable charge in the straight, progressively closing the gap with each stride.

Colin Finn’s shooting excellence secures overall champion victory

By JOHN KING THE Euroa Clay Target Club conducted two championship events on Sunday.

The first event, the Victorian State Tower Single Barrel drew some 37 competitors from the surrounding clubs, all aiming for a chance to win the Overall Sash.

AA grade tower specialist, Colin Finn proved the superiority in tower shooting scoring the only possible 25/25.

Ethan Bazzano, one of Euroa’s promising junior shooters, shot a very credible 23/25 to take out the C grade sash.

Then in the second event, the Eurack Medley Championship, it was Colin’s father Peter who proved the best in this challenging event having to shoot 75 targets being 25 double barrel, 25 single barrel followed by 25-point score.

His score was 121/125 four targets clear of any other score.

The March competition program contains two memorial events celebrating the lives of Barrie Pyke and Craig Asquith.

Barrie was a long time secretary of the Alexandra club and they are sponsoring the Double Barrel Championship.

Craig Asquith was a very valued member of the Euroa Club and was the vice president of the club when he suddenly passed away in late 2022.

The club is sponsoring the Deauville Doubles Championship, an event both he and his great mate Geoff McClure shot together for many years and winning quite a few of those championships.

These events will be conducted on Sunday, March 17.
