Student-made nest boxes are Local schools short staffed saving threatened species Page 5
By RAY THOMAS NEST boxes made by local students in Euroa last year are housing some of nature’s wonderful animals, with phascogales and sugar gliders just a couple of species taking up the new homes. The children worked extremely well last year, and the results have been fantastic.
The boxes were to provide homes for some special small animals that live in the bushland just south of Euroa, and it’s already working. Checking the nest boxes on one property recently, we found nests in seven out of nine boxes. One box had a phascogale mum, with two half-grown young ones.
Another box had a family of sugar gliders (three at least, all fast asleep). The brush-tailed phascogales are particularly important, as these are a threatened species. This wonderful result has only been possible with the enthusiasm of St John’s Primary School in particular, and several landholders who
have agreed to have some nest boxes in their bush areas. Local wood workers Graeme Berry and Stuart Barton also helped greatly, with equipment for cutting the wood to size and tools for the students to work with. It’s worth pointing out that this work has been successful for several crucial reasons; it
certainly isn’t guesswork. The boxes are well designed, to make sure the roof will never leak water in winter. The materials are durable, so won’t rot or split open like ply wood does. The students did high quality work, so the boxes will last for 20 years. ■ Continued page 2
