Damning monitor’s report exposes Strathbogie council’s dysfunction cause that should never have happened.

“In fact the organisation failed because there should have been someone saying, ‘hang on, should we be doing this?’ Because it just isn’t done.”

THE ANDREW DOUGLAS DEBACLE The report reveals Mr Stephenson had been unimpressed by the councillors’ last ditch attempt to save themselves by engaging a trainer – Andrew Douglas of FCW Lawyers – to create a written agreement in the form of a statement of intent and expanded 10-point plan, which was later sent to Minister Horne.

When Mr Stephenson was appointed as a monitor, former councillors Kristy Hourigan and Paul Murray put forth a notice of motion proposing Mr Douglas should be appointed as a trainer to strengthen the group’s governance practice.

Mr Stephenson’s report noted the appointment of the trainer via a notice of motion – whose engagement cost ratepayers $43,182 – was outside of council’s procurement process.

All councillors voted in favour of the notice of motion.

“As the session planning developed, it became clear from my point of view that what was being considered was not going to address the issues which divided individual councillors, and councillors and officers,” Mr Stephenson wrote.

“The session also did not look at all like governance training.

“Instead, it was a process intended to result in a written agreement aimed at creating a collaborative and safe working environment.”

Mr Stephenson recounts that he told the CEO his view “that this would simply become another document which councillors will sign to say they will do better, with nothing to demonstrate that anything has changed”.

He recounts that when he shared the same concern with councillors in an email, some councillors expressed the view his email had been “overly negative”.

“I responded that I was simply being honest with them,” Mr Stephenson wrote.

“Some of the councillors are dismissive of the advice of council staff, particularly when provided by the CEO.” Similarly, councillors lacked a grasp of their own role and how it differed from an operational role, with Mr Stephenson writing “some councillors still do not understand their role – or choose to be selective on which elements of the role they will focus their attention”.

An example of a councillor inappropriately involving themselves in operational matters included an instance in which a councillor “provided incorrect information to community partners which had the potential to damage relations with those partners and the reputation of the council”.

He noted other examples were under investigation and preceded his term as a monitor.

In an interview with The Euroa Gazette, Mr Stephenson said it is common for inexperienced councillors to misunderstand the delineation between the CEO’s role and the role of councillors.

“It’s not a perfect analogy, but if we look at a board in a company as opposed to the executive team, the board sets strategy – the board doesn’t then direct staff to do stuff,” he said.

“Would any organisation, in the modern day, allow its board members to go out and direct the staff?

No. “The council delivers the strategy, the direction, they do the steering.

“And the organisation does the operation, the rowing.”

TWO ENTRENCHED GROUPS In his report, Mr Stephenson wrote of two groupings which failed to work together.

“In my observations, two ‘loose’ groupings exist and there is little or no trust between those groups,” he wrote.

Asked whether the problems were the fault of all councillors, Mr Stephenson told this masthead “you can’t dance without a partner”, but also said “there were a number who were trying their utmost to make sure that the council followed good process, followed the act, followed good governance”.

“And there are others who were blind to it, didn’t agree,” he said.

There has been a clear split between the councillor group in the past year, with former councillors Laura Binks, Chris Raeburn and Sally Hayes-Burke on one side, and all remaining councillors on the other.

The existence of these “loose groupings” has been confirmed by former councillors Robin Weatherald and Paul Murray, as well as multiple other sources who spoke to this masthead.

The split was clearer than ever in the two weeks leading up to the council’s suspension, as Crs Binks, Raeburn and Hayes-Burke all called on the minister to intervene immediately, while Crs Murray and Weatherald expressed optimism about the council’s future.

The former group all made similar statements following the suspension, which referred to councillors other than themselves allegedly breaching the code of conduct and creating an unsafe workplace.

In Mr Stephenson’s report, he wrote “I have not directly observed behaviour I would describe as un-

safe” but he did observe disrespectful behaviour between councillors.

The report found no evidence these relationships would improve.

“While public meetings appear cordial, behind closed doors there is little cohesion across the council,” Mr Stephenson wrote.

Speaking to The Euroa Gazette, Mr Stephenson did not wish to identify which group pursued good governance, saying, “I’ll let others draw that conclusion”.

LACK OF EFFORT AMONG COUNCILLORS One of the more alarming of the report’s findings is of “some councillors regularly not reading their meeting papers”.

Mr Stephenson wrote that logs of an online portal – which records the date and time which individual councillors first open each meeting document – showed that “several councillors consistently do not open briefing papers, council meeting agendas, and particularly confidential attachments to these agendas”.

“The logs also show occasions where the first time a councillor has viewed agenda papers is during the particular council meeting

to which the papers relate,” Mr Stephenson wrote.

The report also said some councillors did not demonstrate an adequate commitment to the role.

As an example, Mr Stephenson cites an instance where a councillor “at one point advised that they would not be attending briefings for a month because they were too busy”.

CEO’S PERFORMANCE REVIEW Mr Stephenson’s report also found fault in the CEO’s performance being reviewed at a public extraordinary meeting in May. “Debating the CEO’s performance review in a public forum and live streaming with a permanent video record – and with subordinate staff in attendance – has the potential to undermine the CEO’s authority and reputation, both internally and externally,” Mr Stephenson wrote.

The report states this meeting should have been confidential in accordance with the Local Government Act. “You don’t do that – it’s like hanging people out to dry,” Mr Stephenson told The Euroa Gazette.

DAVE Andrews has claimed he was accused of bullying during his time as a councillor, while he and other former councillors have denied suggestions they resigned to avoid the consequences of breaching the councillor code of conduct.

The Euroa Gazette contacted the four councillors who resigned during this term of council – Melanie Likos, Mr Andrews, Kristy Hourigan and Reg Dickinson – after councillors Chris Raeburn and Sally Hayes-Burke used speeches at the November council meeting to suggest fellow councillors had avoided accountability by resigning to “get out of” code of conduct breaches.

The same comments were repeated in Mr Raeburn’s and Ms Hayes-Burke’s individual councillor statements published on the council website following their suspension.

“I was charged with bullying,” Mr Andrews admitted, but said this is not why he resigned.

“It’s only because you say something they don’t like the sound of and they shut you down.

“They concoct these charges which hang over you for ages.

“They misuse that particular avenue for them of shutting you down.”

The former Nagambie Ward councillor said an arbitration hearing to investigate the complaint never got off the ground because he resigned beforehand for medical reasons.

At the time of his resignation, he told The Euroa Gazette he had resigned due to a need to undergo open heart surgery (which he is now recovering from), as well as disappointment with the council’s culture.

Bullying is considered “serious misconduct” by the Local Government Act, to be dealt with through an external arbitration process overseen by a government-appointed panel.

Mr Andrews has also claimed another “similar type bullying charge” was levelled against a fellow councillor and he attended an arbitration hearing for the case.

“It was a complete joke that this even went before a hearing – it had no legs at all,” he said.

“It’s just a tactic they use and it’s not conducive to good governance or good councilling (sic).”

The Euroa Gazette understands there has been at least one internal arbitration case (for misconduct not classified as “serious”) during the current term of Strathbogie Shire Council.

Former councillor Robin Weatherald previously told The Euroa Gazette he had seen the report and based on his own reading, he could see no evidence of genuine misconduct.

Mr Weatherald believes allegations of councillor impropriety during this term of council have been blown out of proportion.

Former councillor Reg Dickinson said no councillor resigned because of code of conduct breaches.

“The ones who resigned were the ones pursuing things and trying to get things done, and we were stonewalled,” he said.

He said confidentiality prevented him from confirming if he had allegedly breached the code of conduct.

At the time of his resignation in October, he told The Euroa Gazette he resigned “for my own personal wellness and I can no longer work in a toxic environment”.

Ms Hourigan said she was never accused of breaching the code of conduct and she resigned for other reasons including increased work commitments.

“I would suggest the councillors that are accusing people of [breaching the code of] conduct should let us know if they have one,” she said.

When Ms Hourigan resigned in July, she also cited gender bias and “in-house political bureau-

cracy” as reasons for resigning.

Ms Likos, who resigned as a Lake Nagambie Ward councillor in 2021, said she had never been accused of breaching the code of conduct and she resigned for personal reasons.

She said in her time at council, she had not been aware of any code of conduct breaches.

Mr Weatherald did not resign during this term of council, but he said it had been interpreted he had breached confidentiality, which he did not agree with.

“What I may have said was purely in the interest of my community and they are my first responsibility, and if need be my community comes before council’s so-called rules and regulations,” he said.

Asked whether he had been accused of breaching the code of conduct, he said he had “received a large number of emails with interesting documentation” but he was prevented by confidentiality from confirming these related to code of conduct breaches.

At the November council meeting, Mr Raeburn said there had been almost 30 code of conduct breaches and that “any councillor who resigns to get out of a breach of conduct is irresponsible and unrespectful [sic] for its community”.

Ms Hayes-Burke said more needed to be done to support councillors who had not breached the code of conduct, and that “the consequences of these breaches should not disappear after resignation”.

“Like my colleagues, Cr Binks and Cr Raeburn, I have not had

to resign to make the consequences of a code of conduct breach go away and I refuse to be the trigger for a $90,000 byelection.”

In municipal monitor Peter Stephenson’s final report, he wrote that “previous use of the councillor conduct framework to address alleged infringements of the councillor code of conduct has deepened the rift between some councillors.”

Elaborating on this, Mr Stephenson told The Euroa Gazette “it’s just human nature that the whistleblower gets it in the neck”, which has made the conduct framework a “vexed issue for quite a few years” for local government.

“You speak out because it’s the right thing to do and then that colleague makes life hell for you for the rest of your time in the organisation,” he said.

“I give credit to those who used it here because they stood up at the risk of getting belted, metaphorically.”

According to Mr Andrews, Mr Stephenson once told the councillors that in his own time as a Darebin councillor, he had thoroughly enjoyed every day of his service in council – the opposite of Mr Andrews’ experience.

“I didn’t have a day where I came home thinking I’d achieved much, or had a positive outlook on what occurred,” Mr Andrews said.

Strathbogie Shire Council has previously told this masthead it is prevented by confidentiality from commenting on specific code of conduct breaches.

Your suspension questions answered here Suspended councillors will be eligible to run for council again in 2024 and beyond g y FOLLOWING the suspension of councillors last week, Strathbogie Shire Council has shared answers to frequently asked questions on their website, while the State Government, Victorian Electoral Commission and Strathbogie Shire Council have answered questions from this masthead.

Q: Can suspended councillors run for council again?

A: Yes, the VEC has confirmed there isn’t anything to prohibit suspended councillors from nominating at a future election, as their suspension will end on election day.

Q: How much will interim administrator Peter Stephenson be paid, and who will pay him?

A: Mr Stephenson will be paid by Strathbogie Shire Council at a fixed rate of $160,000 per annum, plus travel and other allowances, according to an attachment to the December meeting agenda.

His part time statutory appointment requires a minimum of three days of work per week from December 6, 2023 until March 6, 2024 (both dates inclusive).

A: In his capacity as interim administrator, Mr Stephenson told this masthead there were “countless” minor violations of the code of conduct during the last term of council, without formal or informal action recorded.

“In addition, several breaches dealt with through informal but structured mediation and a significant number of matters referred to external integrity bodies, which are still under investigation,” he said.

Worksafe: Man caught alight at a Balmattum workplace WORKSAFE Victoria is investigating an incident in which a man in his 30s caught fire at a workplace in Balmattum last week.

A CFA spokesperson said six CFA units from Euroa, Violet Town and Balmattum “attended a person on fire” on Balmattum Church Road late in the afternoon on Tuesday last week.

“It’s believed the person was putting fuel into a tank when caught alight,” the spokesperson said.

He was airlifted to The Alfred in a serious condition with upper and lower body injuries.

The incident was deemed safe by CFA units at 6.26pm, after they attended at 4.53pm and deemed the incident under control at 5.17pm.

Victoria Police also attended the scene.

“WorkSafe inspectors are attending the workplace to determine what further action is required,” a Worksafe spokesperson said.

The Alfred has been contacted for an update on the man’s condition.

By DARREN CHAITMAN FASTER and more reliable internet will be available in Euroa next year after NBN Co upgrades the town’s network infrastructure from copper to full fibre.

“We are upgrading around 1400 premises [in Euroa] from copper-based connections to full fibre,” head of NBN Local for Victoria Emily Peel confirmed.

This explains why crews of contractors engaged by NBN Co have recently been seen around the town working long hours.

Different crews are working on different aspects of the job, such as hauling cables, digging pits and installing new pipes and fibre.

NBN Co and the State Government announced last year they would bring full fibre to town through a coinvestment agreement.

Ms Peel said homes and businesses that choose to

upgrade their internet plans can expect more consistent speeds with minimal interruptions.

She would not confirm when the option to upgrade their plans will be available to consumers.

Norb Le, the supervisor of a five-man crew of cable haulers engaged by NBN Co, told The Euroa Gazette his team expected to be in Euroa for between six to eight weeks “if everything goes right”.

But things do not always go right, which is why crews like his have been working such long hours.

“We generally go for an eight-hour day, but when things go wrong, we’re out here for an extra three hours or so,” Mr Le said.

That is in addition to the two-and-a-half hour drive up from Melbourne’s south east suburbs, where his team members live.

Then there is the drive

back, unless the crew opts to stay in a motel for the night.

Mr Le said Euroa was a “pretty nice town” with nice parks, but the IGA’s 6pm closing time has surprised him.

“We finish at 6 and then we try to go to the shop, and nah, it’s closed,” he said.

Trent Howard, an IT professional living in Euroa, said he “can’t wait” for the upgrade to full fibre.

He said it will be “so much better”, especially for people who work from home, small businesses and gamers.

ing on fibre is that you don’t have any of these problems – it means that people will have less dropouts,” he said.

Higher internet speeds will also be available for consumers who choose to upgrade their plans.

According to Mr Howard, the average internet speed in Euroa is about 25 megabits per second and the maximum speed is about 50 megabits per second.

The full-fibre rollout will increase the maximum speed to 1000 megabits per second, with even higher speeds likely to become available in the future.

Mr Howard said residents who live near the Telstra exchange by the post office currently enjoy a faster connection, but distance will not limit speeds when full fibre is rolled out.

“I literally sound like a PR department,” he joked.

“We’re really lucky that we’re getting this in Euroa.”

THE short-beaked echidna is the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority’s critter of the month.

GBCMA project officer Janice Mentiplay-Smith said the short-beaked echidna belonged to a very select branch of the mammalian family tree – it’s classified as a monotreme, an egg-laying mammal, along with the platypus.

“Nature is quite amazing,” Ms Mentiplay-Smith said.

“The echidna’s unique style of reproduction means the female lays a single egg, normally associated with birds and reptiles and incubates it in her pouch, which we associate with marsupials.

“After just 10 days the echidna’s small leathery egg hatches to reveal a jellybean-sized baby called a puggle.

“From inside its mother’s pouch, the puggle feeds on fatty milk for two or three months, until its spines become too sharp.”

Ms Mentiplay-Smith explained the mother then leaves her tiny puggle in a purpose-built burrow and will feed it until weaned at around six months of age.

She described the echidna as “somewhat of a loner”. “[It is] a solitary creature that roams across large, overlapping home ranges of up to 50 hectares,” she said.

“Only when the female is raising her puggle in a burrow does the Echidna remain in one area for a length of time.”

The echidna feeds on termites, ants, and other insects.

It uses its sticky 17-centimetre-long tongue to scoop up the scurrying ‘moving feasts’ - along with a good measure of gravel and soil.

Thanks to its body armour, the Echidna has few natural predators.

When threatened, it will curl into a ball and tightly wedge itself into a crevice to expose its threatening spines.

The echidna is a competent swimmer and will traverse bodies of water, using its little snout as a snorkel.

As with much of Australia’s wildlife, road traffic is a major danger for echidnas, so it is important to remain vigilant on the roads.

An echidna’s sharp spines are not friendly towards car tyres either; another good reason to drive with wildlife in mind.

HOW is it possible that a candidate, who received only 8.3 per cent of first preference votes in the 2020 council elections, coming last by a considerable margin, can be considered suitable to represent the people of a council ward?

Cr Weatherald’s behaviour since stumbling into the position of councillor for the Lake Nagambie Ward has clearly demonstrated, by his pathetically inappropriate comments about the mayor on local radio, his constant filibustering at council meetings and his regular running to The Euroa Gazette with “tales” about the council, that the 91.7pc of Lake Nagambie Ward voters were clearly correct in not voting for him to represent them.

The Minister for Local Government needs to seriously review and assess if the “next in line” method of appointing councillors is a suitable democratic process.

VICTORIAN regional publisher Provincial Press Group (PPG) has reached agreement with Luke Watson of Wilkie Watson Publications to purchase his family’s Tumut based mastheads and business in New South Wales.

Following the purchase of The Monaro Post and Jindabyne Summit Sun last year, PPG will acquire Tumut and Adelong Times, Tumbarumba Times and The Gundagai Independent in January 2024, trading as Riverina Media Group.

The agreement also includes mastheads, The Temora Independent and Narrandera Argus and The Lake News, the latter published with support of a Lake Cargelligo community services group.

The Wiklie Watson families have been newspaper publishers and commercial printers in Tumut for four generations, having expanded their operations into the mid Riverina in the last decade.

The purchase also follows PPG’s acquisition of several NSW Central West and Hilltops mastheads from ACM in

May this year.

PPG chairman Hartley Higgins said the additional mastheads, located between the company’s Cooma and Cowra based newspapers, comes with strong historic connections to their towns and regional communities.

“They fit with our aim of growth and will be supported by our group publishing and printing technologies,” he said.

PPG’s division North East Media (NEM) publishes the weekly The Euroa Gazette and other North East Victorian community newspapers.

NEM CEO Edward Higgins said with declining electronic media news services in regional NSW, community newspapers were more sought after for trusted coverage of news and local government organisations.

“Local newspapers should actively reflect the communities they serve and consistently promote their economies and jobs,” he said.

“We are keen to add reader value and engagement to these newspapers along with digital media services going forward.”

Suspended councillors fire final missives in farewell statements Binks,, Hayes-Burke y and Raeburn decryy p poor behaviourr

FOLLOWING the suspension of Strathbogie Shire Council until October next year, the organisation has shared strongly opinionated individual statements from all suspended councillors, with the exception of Paul Murray, on their website.

The statements from Laura Binks, Sally Hayes-Burke and Chris Raeburn all decry what they describe as poor behaviour on the part of other councillors.

These statements appear to be versions of the speeches they gave at the November council meeting (described in this masthead last fortnight) with some additions.

The Euroa Gazette understands these statements were drafted with the assistance of council officers and the same assistance was available to all councillors.

In Ms Binks’ three-page statement, the former mayor said “nobody wanted to come to work on Tuesdays when we [councillors] were all in the chamber”, and that there had been a lack of trust between councillors, as well as between councillors and council staff.

“Personally, I am incredibly proud of today’s decision by the minister [to suspend the council],” she said.

“I know you might ask why – we were all just suspended.

“Well, I am proud because of my advocacy in achieving this decision which has been strong and brave.

“Sitting back and doing nothing or in fact resigning would have been much easier, but I am not willing to compromise on workplace safety.”

Municipal monitor Peter Stephenson’s report describes several of the council’s governance failures, but offers less detail of specific instances of councillors behaving poorly.

Mr Stephenson wrote “I have not directly observed behaviour I would describe as unsafe”, but he did observe disrespectful behaviour between councillors, as well as a disrespectful attitude towards staff and CEO Julie Salomon.

Mr Raeburn’s statement reveals he felt “the wheels again began to fall off ” after Janet Dore, the council’s first municipal monitor, was no longer at hand to offer ad-

He said the final straw for him had been at the February 2023 meeting when councillors Kristy Hourigan, Paul Murray, Reg Dickinson and Dave Andrews voted to amend a motion to delay the mid-year review by referring it to the council’s audit and risk committee, against the advice of council officers.

Mr Raeburn said this had been “an unacceptable and

avoidable risk” after officers had warned this delay would risk the sustainability of the next year’s budget and “delays could also mean losing important flood recovery contracts”.

In Ms Hayes-Burke’s statement, she said there had been almost 30 code of conduct breaches and “hundreds of thousands of ratepayers’ money wasted because [some councillors]

are not willing to listen”.

“I have heard community engagement described as ‘fluffy crap’ because some councillor didn’t want to listen to the community, instead thinking they knew best,” she said.

She said recent “significant breaches in confidentiality” had confirmed for her that Minister Horne had made the right decision, and thanked the minister for “lis-

tening to our calls for help”.

The final line of her statement hits hardest.

“Like my colleagues, Cr Binks and Cr Raeburn, I have not had to resign to make the consequences of a code of conduct breach go away and I refuse to be the trigger for a $90,000 by-election,” she said.

In Mr Weatherald’s statement, he notes he only joined council in July 2023, “so my impression of the issues occurring are only based on what I have seen in the last few months”.

Noting his statement was limited in its completeness due to confidentiality, he said there had been a lack of support available to Lake Nagambie Ward councillors, which he attributed to jealousy.

Mr Weatherald also said too many councillor-only meetings had been unproductive, and that he believed that under a more experienced leader in the chamber, many of the issues in the monitor’s report would not have transpired.

Mr Murray, the former deputy mayor, did respond by deadline to requests for an interview or written comment.

Class of 2023 graduate from NPS

By DIANE GRANT GRADUATING from primary, secondary or tertiary educational schools or colleges is now a rite of passage.

Many Australian primary schools are conducting end of year graduation ceremonies or dinners for their grade six graduates witnessed by their school teaching staff and their families.

A graduation lunch was held for grade sux pupils from Nagambie Primary School at Zephyrz restaurant on Wednesday last week.

The students were thrilled to attend the lunch to celebrate the end of their primary school years.

The dining room was beautifully decorated by school staff and the young ones had a graduation lunch they would remember all their lives.

That evening, outdoors on the school grounds, the whole school community, of students, teaching staff and their families witnessed a grade six awards ceremony that began with the two grade sux teachers James Bodycoat and Kim Pollock congratulating the class of 2023 on the wonderful resilience they displayed during this most challenging year and congratulated them and their families for their

persistence, optimism and creativity as they adapted to changes with a positive attitude making their final year of primary school a success.

School principal Robert French thanked his school staff, students and school families for all their support over the past year as the school has been undergoing major renovations.

He thanked sponsors of the 2023 awards and congratulated the grade six on their completion of their primary school years.

Mr French said a fond farewell to 18 departing school families and thanked some volunteers for their ten years or more service to the school.

Mr Bodycoat and Ms Pollock gave the students some good advice for entering high school and to take opportunities and challenges that may come in their futures.

The 27 grade six students presented farewell speeches and some happy memories of their time at Nagambie Primary School.

The students spoke with confidence and assurance from the outdoor deck area as part of the formal proceedings for the graduation night.

The Trevor Boyer Encouragement award was presented by Noeline Boyer and the presentation of the Neil Lodding Sports award sponsored by the Nagambie Foot-

ball and Netball club and Nagambie Cricket Club was made by Sharni Lloyd.

The Neil Lodding Perpetual award was presented by Helen Heathcote on behalf of Neil Lodding.

This was followed by the Kevin Verge Memorial Maths Science award donated by Mrs Sue Verge was presented by teachers Mr Bodycoat and Ms Pollock and principal Mr French.

The Fran Irwin Literacy award donated by Keith and Clint Irwin went to two students and was presented by

The Citizenship award by the Nagambie PS and Nagambie RSL was given to the student by RSL member David Keall and Mr French.

Euroa Food Share: five years of helping those in need

SENIORS CREW: A Christmas luncheon last Monday marked the end of the 2023 season for the Longwood Seniors.

By JOHN MACKLIN WELL, the 2023 season came to a close on Monday last week, and what a day it was for the Christmas luncheon break up.

There were the “Retirettes” who consisted of Margie Chowanetz, Di Mackrell and Chris Day, who entertained the elderly with Christmas songs in the right tone, not too loud and not too soft.

Everyone enjoyed their music and singing.

All the tables were welldecorated in the Christmas spirit.

They had been prepared the night before by Dot, Chris, Lorraine, Carmel and Jean.

On Monday, around 12 noon, the seniors started to arrive.

We were a bit worried about the numbers that were going to attend, as it turned out we were only about 10 short.

Some members weren’t able to attend because of illness, so we ended up with 40 members.

Lunch consisted of beef, turkey and pork with roast vegetables, and dessert was sticky date pudding

with ice cream.

As the meal finished, we had 20 raffles to be drawn, with raffle prizes donated by the members.

When the day came to an end, everyone was there to lend a hand to cleaning up, which did not take long.

Members commented it was the best Christmas lunch they had experienced for quite a while.

That’s it for this year.

Please note we will be back in 2024, starting back on February 5, which is a Monday, and all seniors are welcome.

THE Euroa Food Share program is a communitybased program operated by the Anglican Parish of Euroa, under the auspices of Anglicare in Wangaratta.

The need for people having financial difficulty and need of relief was recognised, and food share was organised five years ago.

The program provides food parcels for local residents twice a month.

The food comes from a variety of sources: the main supplier is Shepparton Food Share based in Mooroopna; fresh eggs, fruit and vegetables are donated locally; our local butcher also donates meat.

Some financial donations have enabled the purchase of refrigeration adequate to the needs of the program.

Money also helps to buy extra food when Shepparton is unable to assist.

During COVID, Wangaratta Food Share was able to assist us in meeting the needs of Euroa clients.

There are eight hardworking and dedicated volunteers, from the church and wider community, who take requests, collect and pack parcels, and then distribute them.

THE suspension of Strathbogie Shire’s elected councillors last week has spared ratepayers footing a bill of approximately $180,000 for two byelections.

The VEC has confirmed by-elections to fill extraordinary vacancies in Seven Creeks Ward and Lake Nagambie Ward – which they had said would cost about $90,000 each – will no longer be required due to interim administrator Peter Stephenson’s appointment.

In October, the VEC had given The Euroa Gazette seemingly contradictory information.

“If all councillors were to be stood down or suspended, the VEC would still proceed with filling any extraordinary vacancies,” a VEC spokesperson said at the time.

“It would only be if the council were dismissed that the process would cease.”

A VEC spokesperson has now explained the previous advice did not factor in the appointment of an administrator.

“To clarify, the VEC will not proceed with filling the two vacancies as an administrator has been appointed to the council,” the spokesperson said.

“If the councillors had been suspended, but an administrator not appointed, then the VEC would have been required to fill the two vacancies via a by-election.”

Prior to the administrator’s appointment, this term of council saw the resignation of four councillors and the appointment of two municipal monitors, while a councillor-elect also stepped down before being sworn in.

A BUILDING with a rare historic connection to the Ned Kelly legend is again being listed for sale.

Ray White Benalla are in the process of listing 64a Arundel Street, Benalla – one of the oldest wooden buildings in Benalla – for sale.

Held overnight in 1877 in the cell behind the courthouse opposite this property, a 16-yearold Ned Kelly was charged with riding his horse on the footpath.

Escaping from his captors as he was being escorted to the courthouse, Ned fled to the saddler/bootmaker king’s shop across the road.

There a violent struggle ensued, with the bootmaker joining four police in the fight against Ned. They fell back into the street, where Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick ripped the sole and heel off Ned Kelly’s boot.

The prisoner’s trousers were almost torn from his body and another constable grabbed his testicles in a practice known as “blackballing”.

In Ned Kelly’s words, “He inflicted terrible pain on me, but still I would not surrender”.

The location of this incident is now known the “The Bootmaker’s Shop” and is home to a

coffee and cake establishment.

The current owners purchased the building at auction 1988 when it was in disrepair and in danger of demolition.

They restored the building with careful attention to maintaining its historic character.

A State Government architect guided the restoration of the original features.

The original front timbers were found beneath sheeting and revealed and restored.

Windows were made to replicate the style of the windows originally in the building, replacing the 1950s plate glass.

Not another Kelly film Filmmakers Darren Hawkins and Sara Joyce y visit Nagambie g for Taungurung g g cultural tour

By HANNAH KENNELLY THE Ned Kelly legend may be the most documented fragment of Australian folklore.

The infamous bushranger boasts an extensive filmography, with 11 feature films, three television miniseries, several theatre productions and countless biographies, poems and ballads.

For many, the suggestion of another Ned Kelly film prompts raised eyebrows and exasperated sighs of “Oh God, not another one”.

But the saturated Kelly genre doesn’t seem to intimidate filmmakers Darren K Hawkins and Sara Elizabeth Joyce.

In fact, it seems to inspire them.

“When I tell people about our film I usually don’t even mention Ned Kelly,” Sara laughed.

“Essentially we are telling a broad love story about a young Irish man called Michael who settled halfway across the world, whose life is tragically cut short by a man called Edward Kelly.

“That’s the story.”

Sara and Darren recently finished the first draft of their Kennedy script, a new Australian film chronicling the life and death of Sergeant Michael Kennedy, one three policemen shot by the Kelly Gang in the notorious Stringybark Creek shootout.

The filmmaking duo are adamant they are not making another “overcooked Kelly film”, but are instead adding a perspective that has been hidden from audiences “for far too long”.

And they aren’t pulling any punches.

“We want to right a wrong that has plagued Australian history for 145 years,” Sara said.

“People continuously view Kelly as the Robin Hood-esque hero when in fact he was a criminal that

killed people.

“This is an injustice and we want to correct that narrative.”

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER Darren was aimlessly flicking through channels one night where he happened upon an intriguing episode of Lawless, a 2017 documentary exploring Australia’s most notorious bushrangers.

Narrated by investigative journalist Mike Munro, the episode focused on the 1878 Stringybark Creek shootout between The Kelly Gang and the police.

Darren was transfixed by the unfolding story, and watched as Munro interviewed Leo Kennedy, the great-grandson of fallen Sergeant Michael Kennedy.

“I grew up hearing a lot of pro-Kelly stories and watching a lot of films that painted him as this folk hero,” Darren explained.

“I found Leo’s interview so moving, especially when he spoke about his greatgrandfather’s murder and the impact on his family.

“It was basically this epiphany moment where I wondered if there was more to the Kelly story.”

Darren spent the next several weeks consumed by research, devouring documentaries and combing through old records.

The accomplished actor and founder of Lonely Hill Films was eager to share his idea with a colleague he knew could bring the vision to the silver screen.

“I phoned Sara and basically pitched her a few ideas I had for upcoming projects,” he said.

“I mentioned this and she said ‘stop that’s the one’.

“We were both instantly hooked.”

A self-described theatre kid, Sara spent two decades working as an actor before she fell in love with cinematography.

“I worked on props, the steadicam department, production, basically anything apart from hair and makeup throughout the 90s,” she said.

“By 2000 I was producing my first feature film.”

Sara credits her diverse background as a key building block for her success as a screenwriter.

“When you’ve worked across lots of different roles you get a greater understanding of the mechanisms behind the scenes and you gain a greater appreciation for the part everyone on a film set plays,” she said.

“I think it’s made me a better communicator and a better filmmaker.”

Sara’s producing credentials are undoubtedly extensive, having worked on numerous Hollywood productions including Star Wars, The Matrix, and Gods of Egypt.

She and Darren recently wrapped filming in Tamworth, a joint project they remain tightlipped on.

“We have worked together before, so I think we are really eager to bring Michael Kennedy’s story to life,” Darren said.

“It’s incredibly exciting.”

SPACE FOR TRUTHTELLING Darren and Sara recently travelled to Nagambie for wawa biik, a Taungurung Cultural Tour, in preparation for the film.

The pair met with Taungurung elder Uncle Shane Monk and Taungurung guides Jonah Tamatea Honeysett and Ashleigh Wilkinson and visited key historical sites including Reedy Lake.

Darren and Sara emphasised the importance of including First Nations perspectives in their script - a practice they believe many screenwriters should use.

“For example, on this tour we’ve learnt about the Indigenous practice of tree scarring – that’s something that can be included in film’s landscape.”

Uncle Shane gladly met the pair during the tour and welcomed them and other visitors with a smoking ceremony.

“To be on this land is to be committed to truth-telling,” Uncle Shane said.

“That is a privilege.”

Fellow tour guide Jonah agreed and explained the importance of truth-telling for “dormant stories”.

“We use truth-telling to wake up dormant stories from our lineage,” he said during the tour.

Both Darren and Sara cited truth-telling as “major source of inspiration” for the script.

“We want to tell a different side to a story so many people have heard before,”

Sara explained.

Nagambie is not the only place Darren and Sara have visited in preparation for the film.

In April, the pair saw Mansfield Shire’s police memorial and spoke with locals at the Delatite Hotel and Historical Society.

They hope to travel to Ireland to see Michael Kennedy’s childhood home next year.

However the most emotive location was

Stringybark Creek.

The pair visited the infamous shootout location in April amidst a period of torrential rain.

“We basically visited the site and it was pouring rain and hail and everything was exceptionally eerie,” Sara said.

Darren agreed and became visibly teary when recounting the experience.

“It was incredibly emotional to visit the place where Michael was murdered,” he said.

“It was really moving and really reinforced the importance of the story we are writing.”

A PRO-HISTORY FILM Both Darren and Sara made no effort to disguise their distaste for Kelly and were frequently critical of “Kelly apologists” – historians and members of the public who “glorified and worshipped” the Kelly legacy.

They both consider many of his crimes worthy of terrorism and referenced “countless incidents where he robbed and assaulted people”.

“I think people admire Kelly and revere him almost as a Bonnie and Clyde figure, but he wasn’t just a cheeky troublemaker, he was a criminal,” Darren said.

However, when asked if they would describe their film as anti-Kelly, the pair hesitated.

“I’d say our film isn’t proKelly or anti-Kelly,” Darren said after a pause.

“It’s pro-history and we want to share a side of history that hasn’t been told.”

As well as sharing Sergeant Kennedy’s story, Darren and Sara also wanted to highlight Mansfield township’s contribution to the Kelly story.

“After Michael’s murder, the Mansfield community rallied around his widow Bridgette and Maria Lonigan and made sure they

were well-supported,” Darren explained.

“They actually advocated for them to receive a legacy pension – we actually believe they were the first in Australian to receive this.

“That’s a wonderful achievement and I don’t think the Mansfield community receives enough acknowledgement for that.”

Darren and Sara said they had received many inquiries from people who were interested in Michael Kennedy’s story.

“I think there’s a real appetite for people to hear a different side and we are really eager to do the story justice,” Darren said.

Did they anticipate a negative reaction from some audiences?

“Oh without a doubt,” Darren laughed.

“We are definitely expecting a wide variety of responses, including a significant backlash from certain groups of people.

“I’ve actually already had some pro-Kelly people email me and tell me to leave Ned alone”.

For those unfamiliar with the Kelly controversy, this response may seem like a slight overreaction to an event which happened over a century ago.

However, the preservation of legacy and protection of truth continue to spark polarising debate between those who view Kelly as an iconic folk hero and those who view him as criminal.

Sara believed many peo-

ple’s stance and sympathy were dependent on the type of media they consumed.

“There are many people who read certain books by certain historians and automatically sympathise with Kelly,” she said.

“If you do the real research, I think a lot of people will end up being on the side of police, at least that’s what happened to me.”

Darren said a different perspective on screen was “long overdue”.

“Many people are incredibly protective of Kelly’s legacy; however this is a preservation of what they perceive the truth to be,” he said.

“But they are not prepared to listen to someone else’s story.

“The families of the fallen police officers are recipients of decades of generational trauma and they have never had their chance to see their story on screen.

“The Sydney Olympic ceremony featured Ned Kelly, how do you think the Kennedy, Lonigan, Scanlan and McIntyre families felt seeing that? ” he said.

“They basically had to watch an effigy of the man who decimated their families being celebrated on the Olympic world stage.

“We want to give them a chance to share their story.”

Darren hoped the film would share perspectives audiences may not have heard.

“I would tell Kelly sympathisers that we just want to start a conversation, that’s all,” he said.

However Sara voiced a stronger message.

“I would say to those who ignore the truth of history; we are coming for you.”

A TIGHTROPE OF ACCURACY AND CREATIVITY Hollywood has long weathered criticism for their preference for embellishment over accuracy.

Previous academy award recipient Greenbook and current box office epic Napoleon have been castigated for their sloppy grip on facts and critiqued for misrepresenting key historical events and figures.

Darren and Sara were eager to balance their commitment to historical accuracy with room for creative flair.

“I think overall we want the story to be as close to history as possible,” Sara said.

“Of course we might take some creative liberties, especially with the presence of the Kennedy and Kelly matriarchs.

“There also might be a clever reference to The Man from Snowy River which Mansfield audiences are going to love.

“But overall everything including costumes, accents, haircuts and minute details are going to be as accurate as possible.”

Darren and Sara have reached out to many families connected to the Stringybark shooting.

The pair have met Leo Kennedy several times and have also scheduled meetings

However, they have not yet met Kelly’s decedents.

“We want to tread carefully and be respectful and a meeting with Kelly’s side hasn’t happened yet,” Sara conceded.

“That’s definitely not to say

we wouldn’t be open to it.”

However, the lack of Kelly input was not a large concern for Darren and Sara.

“To use terminology from Lord of the Flies; the other side has had the conch for far too long,” Darren said.

“They’ve had the megaphone for centuries and now it’s time to give the others a turn.”

Grinch-mas is an annual holiday tradition inspired by Dr Seuss’s classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, that encourages readers to “grow your heart three sizes” through the celebration of family reading, giving from the heart and community spirit.

National Grinch Day, December 1, kickstarts the 25 Days of Grinch-mas.

During this time “Grinch & Max” will be roaming around Longwood, so be sure to keep an eye out for them both.

The festival is run by a subcommittee of the Longwood Football Netball Club, with proceeds going towards projects for the club and community.

Past projects funded include a second netball court, lighting and shelter, and a festival storage container.

In 2024, all proceeds will go towards the club’s contribution to a new female-friendly multiuse amenities building at the Longwood Recreation Reserve.

Early bird tickets may be purchased online from December 1.

Under 18s are free, but they must purchase a free ticket.

The Longwood Primary School statewide transition day will be held Tuesday, December 12.

The End of Year concert will be held on Friday, December 15.

Parents are requested to assemble from 5.30pm for a BYO picnic dinner with the performance commencing at 6.30pm.

Students are to wear casual clothes with Christmassy theme if possible.

Christmas came early at GraniteHill

By CATIE HILL CHRISTMAS came early for residents and guests last Wednesday at the annual GraniteHill Christmas party at Euroa Health.

Euroa Health food services prepared and served 150 meals for residents and guests who all enjoyed a delicious four course meal of mouth-watering prawns, lobster vol-au-vents, traditional main with ham and turkey and delightful dessert options of plum pudding or black forest cake that made it a feast to remember.

It was heartwarming to hear positive feedback from everyone, including resident Don Stevens who expressed that the day was well-organised and the best event he has attended in his seven years at GraniteHill.

“The combination of magnificent food, music by Greg Dudley, and Santa’s visit added to the celebrations, which I spent with my daughters,” he said.

Resident Dennis Earl was eager to help staff with setup tasks like preparing table setting and napkin folding, which certainly made for a fun moment as he enjoyed his happy hour beer while ensuring candy canes were

ARTC records almost 400 conversations about precinct design ARTC Inland Rail’s consultation period, during which they sought feedback from residents on the latest designs for the Euroa Railway Station precinct, has now closed.

Almost 400 locals, stakeholders and community group discussed the design with ARTC staff, according to the ARTC. Hundreds more accessed the online visualisations and images and commented and discussed the proposal.

While the formal one-month consultation period has closed, the ARTC remains open to receiving further feedback from residents by phone (1800 732 761) or email (victoriaprojects@artc.com.au).

Ed Walker, ARTC Victoria and South Australian general manager projects, said every discussion and interaction has been recorded and will be considered in the final design.

“We’re thankful to everyone who viewed the latest design for the Euroa Railway Station precinct and Anderson Street underpass and took time to share their feedback,” he said.

“Next year we’ll continue to refine the design, incorporating community feedback where possible, and sharing this locally as we take the next steps in building Inland Rail.”

The proposed design could change significantly if the Euroa Goods Shed is added permanently to Victoria’s heritage register.

The ARTC previously announced their intention to remove the 150-year-old shed, saying the relocated station platform would encroach on it and the structure is unsafe.

But late last month, Heritage Council of Victoria chair Professor Philip Goad issued an interim protection order to protect the shed after receiving a submission from community group EuroaConnect outlining a case for the goods shed’s inclusion on the heritage register.

Euroa school receives $30k PE grant EUROA Primary School is among four schools to receive a $30,000 “Active Schools” grant to fund physical education initiatives.

Victorian Minister for Education Ben Carroll this week announced that Euroa Primary School, Bro-

ken Creek Primary School, Redesdale Mia Mia Primary School and Rushworth P-12 College were receipients of the grant.

Schools have previously used their Active Schools funding to upskill PE teachers, purchase sports and fitness equipment, imple-

ment programs such as bicycle education, circus and dance, build outdoor learning spaces, make upgrades to playgrounds, install sensory play areas and cover costs associated with sports and physical activities.

Belle Vue Park Primary used their Active Schools

Grant this year to connect with local sporting clubs, providing students the chance to participate in local community sports.

The Victorian Budget 2022/23 included $20.8 million over two years to continue the Active School initiative, which encourages

students to get involved in physical activity and develop healthy lifelong habits, bringing the total investment to $45.4 million since 2019.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate Active Schools funding recipients and congratulate the successful schools

involved for their contributions to keeping young Victorians active, healthy and engaged,” Mr Carroll said.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the Active Schools Program is a fabulous way to help young people find an activity they love.

The venue is the lawns of the Seven Creeks Park near Burtons Bridge, or in the Mercy Centre at St John’s PS if it is raining.

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is inviting everyone to their annual Violet Town pool party to kick off the summer holidays.

The free event is set to make a splash on Thursday, December 21 from 3-7pm at the Violet Town Swimming Pool.

The pool party promises an afternoon of activities for young residents with live music, a sausage sizzle and some festive fun with visits from Santa’s elves and Christmas craft activities.

Strathbogie Shire Council said they are committed to providing inclusive and engaging events for the youth in our community.

The Violet Town Pool Party will be the first pool party series event with more taking place in early 2024 at Avenel, Euroa and Nagambie Swimming Pools.

Haines wants action on EUROA & regional mobile coverage DISTRICT

AS Avenel’s longstanding mobile blackspot woes continue, independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines has backed recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry into regional mobile phone coverage.

The “Connecting the country: Mission critical” report makes 23 recommendations including guaranteeing minimum levels of mobile coverage, providing roaming across service providers during emergencies, acknowledging the need for continuous coverage along major transport routes, and multicarrier sharing of mobile phone infrastructure.

“The recommendations in

this report are a positive step forward for mobile phone connectivity in regional, rural and remote Australia, and I urge the government to implement them,” Dr Haines said.

“The 30 per cent of people who live outside the major cities know too well the digital divide that exists between regional Australians and our city counterparts.

“That is why I support the recommendation for an universal service delivery obligation on mobile service providers, ensuring a minimum level of mobile phone service to all Australians regardless of where they live.”

She said Indi had experienced “tremendous success” under the government’s Mobile Black Spot Program, but there is “still so much work to do to fix regional mobile phone coverage”.

Dr Haines made a submission to the inquiry featuring the experiences and connectivity challenges of community members in Indi which were highlighted in the final report.

She submitted that congestion, slow speeds and dropouts were common complaints to her electorate office and that better connectivity was crucial for regional communities for economic

and social reasons, as well as public safety.

“Considerable stretches of no service where the individual is with a provider that is not serviced in the area impacts negatively on the visitor experience and consequently, on the longterm destination brand credentials of North East Victoria,” Dr Haines wrote in her submission.

The parliamentary committee’s report has recommended a review of the Mobile Black Spot Program to ensure it remains fit for purpose, and calls for a detailed government-led region-by-region mobile coverage audit.

The angel Gabriel visited young Mary, saying she’d found favour; “You will conceive and give birth to a son and you’re to call Him Jesus which means Saviour”. (Luke 1:30-31). Joseph was reassured by an angel, that his virgin bride had been supernaturally blessed by God. After an exhausting journey on a donkey, Joseph and very pregnant Mary, received no Bethlehem Grand accommodation, only a humble animal shelter. Maybe it wasn’t a silent night of the Christmas carol but it was a most Holy night.

Angles appeared to shepherds in the fields to follow the bright Star, (Luke 2:8-14) to find and worship the newborn King and later, wise Magi travelled from the East to pay homage to the prophesied King of the Jews. (Psalm 72:10,Matt.2:9).

God appeared as a human child, who would usher in a new Covenant to span the gulf between God and man. We’re like fish in a tank, no matter how much they’re fed by the same kind hand, they still hide, untrusting, at the hands’ shadow. Perhaps becoming a fish and speaking fish language would help? Incredibly, God did exactly this; sending His Divine Son to become a weak human baby then to live the life of a perfect man. Word became flesh (John 1:14) when Jesus came to earth, to set us free from the captivity of sin and death.

God set in motion His reconciling plan. (2 Cor 5:19-21) Mans’ spiritual and moral darkness was forever dispelled by Jesus, the Light of the World, who brought peace and joyful assurance that we can be fully forgiven and receive eternal life.

Standing on the edge of the vast Grand Canyon we know something big happened! After 2000+ years, the Holy Birth continues to be shared even under hostile conditions. Something big must have happened! Despite opposition, Christians spread the Gospel, often unto death, as did the original disciples. No one sacrifices their life except for Truth. Jesus was a sinless, innocent man at 33, who willingly went to a gruesome, cruel death on a cross, to bare the sins of the world upon Himself; sparing us and setting us free! Only a broken, contrite heart enables Him to save us as He wants to.

(Psalm 51:17) Jesus Christ has thrown out the life buoy but we are responsible to grab it!

The Lord will take you to the mountaintops; show you miracles, wonders and Truth; when you draw close and turn to Him. We either believe and receive His Grace and Mercy or we refuse His sacrifice and make it, and Him, of no consequence.

Around the bowling greens BOWLS VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES HELP! We are now desperate for volunteers to cover four by two hour slots for the Shepparton Bunnings barbecue on Tuesday, December 26 Boxing Day. If you can definitely help please phone Leanne, or there is a sheet on the club noticeboard to write your name on.

This day’s work should put another $1000 plus into the kitty for the new Greens Roller.

The Midweek team had yet another good win, beating Shepparton Park on Tuesday.

This means we are on top of the ladder.

Our second-year players are really coming along well, congratulations everyone.

Due to a few absences changes were made to our weekend teams again.

Travelling to Alexandra we won on all rinks, final score being 75-39, 160, with some great bowls played.

Our nonagenarian Ian Chanter beautifully led all day for David Underwood, and we saw the return of Maxine Daley on Jeremy Boruch’s team who fought their way back to success.

We are now fourth on the ladder.

As president I thank David Underwood and Co for ensuring the greens are in order for Pennant and Jack Attack, and our volunteer gardener Gerard, who travels from Benalla each week to do the surrounds.

It has been another successful Jack Attack comp with everyone enjoying the five weeks of bowls, raffles and “social”.

The VT Café (Gary Abley) took out first place on a countback and were happy to receive the prize donated

by GMCU and presented by Manager Nathan.

Second prize donated by the club went to Chicks and Rooster (Lou Abley), and third prize donated by Leanne’s Mowing was won by BLT – who generously donated the prize money back to the club, thanks guys.

A huge thank you to all those businesses and individuals who donated prizes for the raffles that were so keenly supported every week.

Intermissions were always greatly enjoyed.

Bill the BBQ’er, the unofficial caterer Marg, and Laurell who ensures the bar is well stocked and Annie Q who sold raffle tickets this week with great success.

February 1 is the date for our next five week comp’.

AVENEL BOWLS CLUB

By KATE DONOVAN Midweek Pennant Division six, Round eight Avenel 14 – 41 defeated

Colbinabbin 0 - 31.

Robyn Hyland, Moiann Papageorgiou, Jenny Furletti, Marion Gittus (s) won 14 of the 21 ends and led from start to finish. Colbinabbin had a late surge, however Avenel held on for a well-deserved three-shot win, 18 – 15.

Bill O’Connor, Donna Rowley, Nyoli Bell, Glen Bell (S) came from behind mid game scoring fourteen shots over six consecutive end wins.

This was enough to set up the seven-shot win, 23 – 16.

Avenel are now third on the ladder and play ladder leaders Mooroopna Blue away in the next game.

Midweek Pennant Division three, Round nine Avenel 2 – 62 were defeated by Mooroopna Golf 14 - 86.

Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) were up 15 – 14 on the 18th end when Mooroopna Golf took their game to another level and won the last seven ends and the game 31 – 15.

Rusty Schwab, Howard Geldard, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) were as many as seventeen shots down mid game.

They won the second half, but the deficit was too much to haul in, losing 17 – 27.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Howard Geldard, Grace Kenworthy (s) got off to a flying start and were up eighteen shots at the break.

Mooroopna Golf found line and length and gave chase in the second half, however Avenel held strong and won the game 30 - 28.

Avenel remain in top place on the ladder and play Kyabram at home in the next game.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round nine Avenel 1 – 79 were defeated by Mooroopna 17 – 105.

To use an old cliché, it was a game of two halves as Pam Pedder, Jenny Furletti, James Wall, Jake Wall (s) were seven up at the break for lunch with Mooroopna winning the second half by seven shots for the game to be drawn 21 apiece.

Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) were behind all game and threw all they had at Mooroopna in the last few ends, but Mooroopna held on for a three shot win 26 – 23.

Going into the break, twelve shots down, Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy (s) staged a mini come back to get within four shots of the lead midway through the second half.

However, Mooroopna were too good and piled on a few late end wins for their victory, 33 – 21.

Howard Geldard, Noel Slater, Brett McDonald, Geoff Hateley (s) were in the game at the break, but the second half well and truly belonged to Mooroopna as increased their lead to win by eleven shots and claim the win 25 – 14.

READY FOR THE BATTLE: Charmaine Reid was a shinning light for Euroa Bowls club, making it through to the final of the GV Division of the Ladies State Pairs against Kyabram on January 20.

Weekend Pennant Division sven Round nine Avenel 2 - 39 were defeated by Seymour 12 - 42.

Mark Morse, Norm Billingsley, Ross Sinclair, Graeme Toy (s) won ten out of eleven ends mid game which set up an eight-shot win, 22 – 14.

Mary Black, Robyn Hyland, Moiann Papageorgiou, Marion Gittus (s) struggled with the elements and an accurate Seymour rink losing 18 – 28.

The next game for Avenel is at home against Rushworth on January 20.

EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By GREG BLATCHFORD THE bowls season has wound up for the Christmas break for all sides barring Weekend Pennant Division four who have a game against Tatura Hilltop (away) on Saturday.

It has been a good first half of the season for the club with several sides in contention at the halfway point.

The best news of all, however, is that the clubrooms are open, look fantastic and the Christmas Party was able to be held “at home”.

It was an enjoyable evening that was even more enjoyable for those members who snared prizes in our Christmas Raffle.

The raffle winners were - first prize Marion McMartin, second prize Gary Grant, third prize Mary Steen, fourth prize Deb Rowarth, fifth prize Heather Bamford and sixth prize Jan Sheargold.

In more somber news we pay our respects to Audrey McIntosh, life member of the Club, foundation member of the ladies’ bowls club and stalwart on and off the green.

There were no social bowls again last week but on Thursday Margaretha Cerini and Charmaine Reid made it through to the final of the GV Division of the Ladies State Pairs but were defeated by the strong combination of Di Hands and Kate Bush – not the singer. A great effort by our girls.

On Friday we had two groups come to the club for some social bowling and Festive cheer and it is great to see the community sharing our facilities.

Kev Milner and Ian South collected cash in the Nifty 50 and the meat tray was won by the Croquet Club with the bottles of wine going to Longwood Racing and Shane Drysdale which may or may not have brought a smile to Charmaine’s face.

We didn’t have the same success in Weekend Pennant this week however we still put in some credible performances with Division One winning two rinks and getting within 10 shots of second placed Kyabram, Division four going down to Tallygaroopna by three shots but securing five valuable points and Division six scoring a seven shot win over Shepparton Park to gain 12 valuable points.

Flashback to December 9, 2000: Longwood Cricket Club’s record-breaking day

By JOHN GILBERT ON a historic day in 2000, Longwood Cricket Club witnessed a remarkable display of batting prowess as Jamie Nanson and Cameron Roper etched their names into the annals of cricketing history.

The duo showcased the essence of perfect timing as they orchestrated a recordbreaking seventh wicket

partnership against Ruffy.

Jamie Nanson, in sublime form, notched an unbeaten 113 runs, embellished with eight boundaries.

Alongside him, Cameron Roper contributed a splendid century, amassing 101 runs with four fours to his name.

Their partnership of 210 runs set new benchmarks, creating records not only for

the AEDC Association but also for Longwood Cricket Club, against the Ruffy Cricket Club, and on the hallowed Longwood ground.

The pivotal moment unfolded when the pair united at 6/201.

Exploiting the tiring Ruffy attack, Nanson and Roper demonstrated resilience, skill, and an impeccable sense of timing.

Longwood concluded the innings at an imposing 7/411, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing history of the region.

Despite their exceptional efforts, that season ended with Longwood Cricket Club, under the captaincy of Jamie Nanson, reaching the final against the Paling Bats. Unfortunately, the game concluded in a rain-

affected match, and Longwood experienced a loss in the final.

By ROLF WEBER NINETY players celebrated the final GV Veteran Golfers event for 2023 at Valley View Golf Club on Monday, December 4, despite the early summer tee time of 9am.

This proved to be an appropriate decision as the temperature climbed from 21C to 30C throughout the day.

The course was in excellent condition and a real credit to the hard working volunteers.

The surrounding district has certainly dried off and those that ventured off the fairways may well have collected in their socks some seeds of the Bristly Wallaby Grass (Rytidosperma setaceum, known previously as Austrodanthonia, and even earlier as Danthonia setacea).

The ladies from Valley View presented the club rooms in fine festive mood and the two course meal and table service lived up to expectations.

Today we announced our 2023 champions, sponsored by Goulburn Murray Credit Union, and decided by the aggregate of the best two scores from a possible three rounds.

A Grade, decided on aggregate Stroke score - Winner – John Keller, Hill Top, Gross 154.

B Grade decided on aggregate Stableford score – Winner - Gary Bow, Nagambie, 74pts.

C Grade decided on aggregate Stableford score – Winner – Leo Hartup, Kialla, 78pts.

Congratulations also to “player of the year” Ray Gourlay, Kialla, who played in 13 rounds, with an average of 32.55 stableford points.

The sponsorship of this award was taken up by the “Deniliquin Travellers” several years ago.

In today’s event the A-grade winner was Tom McConchie of Parkland with 38 stableford points,, from Peter Mangan, Valley View, on countback with 36 pts.

B-Grade winner was Alan Hausler, Valley View, 37pts; from Dennis Hardie, Rushworth 34 count back.

C-Grade winner with the best score of the day and streets ahead of his nearest rival was Lindsay Tatterson,Parkland with 40 pts;, from Ron Dixon,Lockington 33 count back.

RESULTS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6. It was the second and final round of the Vi Nolan 4BBB Par Competition.

The winners of the second round were Irene Keogh and Karyn Thompson with plus two.

The overall winners were Moz Fowler and Kylie Carmichael with +12.

Eighteen and nine hole balls down the line went to Irene and Karyn.

Jane Bow managed to get both nearest to the pin on the third and 16th.

RESULTS OF THURSDAY MIXED NINE HOLE COMPETITION Results Thursday, November 30.

There were 24 players for a Stableford Round.

Wayne LeCerf was the winner with 19pts.

Runners up was Barry Cryer with 18pts.

Nearest to the pin on the 13th was Hugh Lawrence and on the 16th was Karyn Thompson.

There were 21 players for a Stroke round.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

We welcomed some visitors from Yea and they enjoyed playing the course.

The winner of the Men’s competition was Rick Wills with a great score of 40 points The winner of the ladies competition was Victoria Fry with a score of 40 points.

Lineballs were won by Kristen Moore with 39 points, Jean Robertson with 37 points and Phil Fry with 38 points.

Nearest the pin winners were Victoria Fry on the eighth, Neal Thomas on the 15th and Phil Raftery on the 17th.

Ladies drive and pitch was won by Victoria Fry. Men’s drive and pitch was won by Rick Wills.

The straightest drive was won by Graeme Carnegie.

Next week is Stableford and Peter Smith is on Duty.

On Sunday December 10 we held the Frost 4bbb tournament.

It was great golf weather with a lovely breeze.

We had 42 players who all enjoyed the day and we would like to thank Arthur Frost for sponsoring the day.

He played all eighteen holes at the age of 99 years and 11 months old.

Ladies winners were Kerry Hewlett and Kristen Moore with a great score of 49 points.

They combined very well on all holes.

Runner up winners for the ladies were Gayle Raftery and Victoria Fry with another great score of 48 points.

Men’s winners were Colin Long and Wayne Kupke from Eildon with another great score of 48 points.

Runner up winners of the men’s were David Kennett and Mick Dixey with another great score of 45 points.

McDonald and Zac Rawlings with a score of 45, Leigh Munroe and Grant Walters with a score of 45, Dave Fullager and Bernie O’Hare with a score of 44, Jean Robertson and Millie Cummins with a score of 47, Greg Roberts and Wally Dunn with a score of 43, Phil Raftery and Phil Fry with a score of 43 and Scott and Charlie Watson with a score of 42 points.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB

By DAVID LOVE THE three man Ambrose played in blustery conditions proved to be the most popular event of the year on the Nagambie regular season schedule with 46 players teeing it up for The Seymour Club matchday vouchers.

The winning score put together by regular playing partners Jeremy Ezard, Shaun Spicer and Ryan Ezard was an incredible seven under par 65 net 58.33 with scintillating putting by the winning trio credited for the runaway result.

Runners up with a winning score any other week was the unlikely trio of Barry Cryer, LindsayHall and Sam Villinger combining for a two under par 70-8.83- 61.17, with Cryer providing some long bombs from the tee and Hall and Villinger adding the finishing touches.

A top three finish went to Shane Black, Steve Dove and John Hurley with a par equaling 72-9.17-62.83 The nearest the pin prizes went to Ryan Ezard with a penetrating strike into the hollowing head wind on the eighth Jeremy Ezard flighting it home with a tail wind on the eighth, par three specialist Steve Donnison doing his thing at the 13th and Peter Lawrence smacking it with everything he has got to get to the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be the annual Ray Cassar Memorial cross country two man Ambrose sponsored by Ben Cassar on the composite course, tee off is 8 am onwards with B. Cryer on office duty and L. Hall in the bar.

in the December Drummond golf Monthly Medal.

The record had been jointly held

by Cam Roper and Plugger Corradin for many years.

Paul’s round included with eight birdies and an eagle on the par fifth.

Sixth hole he putted beautifully with a total of fifteen one put greens.

Paul is in the form of his life, and it wouldn’t surprise many if he was to even better this truly remarkable score.

Sunday saw the final rounds of the Lindsay Park nine hole match play knock out event held at Euroa Golf Club.

This is a new event in the calendar and after the first year’s success, this event will become bigger and better next year.

The Club is very appreciative of major sponsor Lindsay Park Racing for their continued support of the Club and General Manager of Lindsay Park Racing Gareth Downey was on course to present the event trophies to the winners after some very tight matches in the semi finals.

Sarah Bullen defeated Lorraine Ellis one up while Judy McLean also one up over Melissa Eddy saw her through to the final which Sarah Bullen won one up.

Lorraine Ellis was one up over Melissa Eddy in the third place play off.

Lindsay Park had two players in the semi, but Keith Seeber knocked out Gaz Ritchie four plus two while Ross Wishart went down to Lucas Paul setting up a final play off with Keith Seeber.

Lucas sunk a 30 foot putt to birdie the 18th to claim the narrowest of wins while Ross Wishart got the better of Gaz Ritchie in the third place play off.

The Ladies Division one Saturday event was won by Levena Redfern on countback over Melissa Eddy and Sarah Bullen took out the Monthly medal and the B Scratch.

Up and coming junior Sam Mills had a net 68 to claim Division two in the Men’s event in a countback over another young member Lochie Robinson.

Marcus Steers had a return to form also with a 67.

Eight players returning scores of 71 or better.

A big field of 32 players enjoyed the Friday Twilight event which was won by Twilight specialist Dale McIntosh with 21 points.

The Twilight event was also a farewell to Gary Ritchie who will be heading to join Rachel in the Hunter Valley for work.

Gary has been an enthusiastic and lively member at Euroa and the Club wish him well with the move.

Earlier in the week the Club hosted visitors from Kew in the annual Eliza Forlonge Event.

The visitors were treated to two days of excellent golf and some Country Club hospitality including a very pleasant dinner.

Later this week the Lads and Ladies team take on the longest day challenge of 72 holes in one day in a major fund raiser for the Anti Cancer Council.

The ladies in Gayle Furphy, Julie Harrington and Judy Sands had a day out, winning all their sets and all the mixed.

Dan Godsmark and Dan Flack also had a win.

The final score was 67-46.

Longwood Lawn has stretched its winning streak with a decisive win over an undermanned Moglonemby.

Leanne Armstong, Molly Redfern and Jacob Tarran claimed all their sets.

The win catapults Longwood Lawn into second place on the ladder, leap-frogging Euroa Lawn.

For Moglonemby, Michael Kelly had a good afternoon, winning two of his three sets.

The final score was 69-36.

Euroa Lawn lowered its colours to Strathbogie in a tight contest.

The ladies, Marja Wondergem, Rowena Ellis and Kim Saxon won all their sets while the men struggled in the absence of regular number one man Keivin Bott.

The final score was Strathbogie 54-Euroa Lawn 46.

St Paul’s remains unbeaten on top of the ladder after a lopsided encounter with Benalla Lawn Green.

Last year’s premier didn’t drop a set in the 72-24 demolition.

In section two, St Paul’s welcomed back Phil Mollison and Jim Gall when the side travelled to take on Avenel.

And what a comeback it was.

They were the side’s only players not to relinquish a set.

It was a comfortable win for St Paul’s-57 to 43.

After last week’s morale-boosting win, Longwood Lawn came up against the very experienced Swanpool outfit.

The young Longwood side battled on but couldn’t get the job done.

Final score Swanpool 72-Longwood Lawn 27.

All matches in the final round before the break this Saturday are to be played on the lawn at Benalla.

Euroa Junior CFA kicks off season with impressive demonstration

By DAN GODSMARK OVER the weekend, Kyneton played host to an exciting Junior CFA demonstration, featuring the former under 14s state champions, Euroa.

This event marked Euroa’s first official appearance since several members were promoted to the under 17s category.

Euroa’s young firefighters showcased their skills and determination, securing an impressive fourth place overall for the day.

In specific events, Addison claimed first place in the under 17s hydrant race, while Maddison and Macey secured second place in the under 14s two-man Marshall event.

The team consisting of

Maddison, Macey, Charlotte, and Charlee achieved an outstanding second place in the under 14s 4Y category.

Euroa’s performance demonstrated their commitment and prowess , especially considering they have only been able to run several training sessions in recent times.

Euroa A grade displays grit against Karramomus EUROA CRICKET CLUB A GRADE

By JACK WILSON IN a compelling round eight encounter of the Haisman Shield, Euroa A Grade made the journey to Vibert Reserve in Shepparton to face Karramomus.

Captain Scott Hamilton’s decision to bat first on a lively pitch set the stage for an intriguing battle.

Hamilton, along with Vaughan Kirk, opened the innings, successfully negotiating the new ball until Kirk departed for five.

The captain followed suit in the next over, contributing a valuable 20 runs.

Euroa’s batters persevered, facing a challenging Karramomus attack, and reached a score of 6-92 by tea.

The post-tea session saw Euroa’s tailenders step up, guiding the team to a respectable total of 188.

James Lloyd played a pivotal role, amassing 46 runs, while the English import Liam Phillips contributed a valuable 39.

With 17 overs remaining in the day’s play, Euroa’s bowlers showcased their skills, getting the ball to swing both ways.

Despite Lloyd being denied a hat-trick, Karramomus found themselves at 2-35 at stumps.

The intense battle between the two teams is set to resume in the upcoming week.

Junior shooter dominates Euroa clay target club’s annual Christmas shoot CLAY TARGET SHOOTING EUROA CLAY TARGET CLUB

B GRADE IN the initial phase, a muggy morning and early afternoon with a green top at the Friendlies had the home team hoping to win the toss and send Karramomus into bat. However, Karramomus called tails, won the toss, and elected to field.

Grayson Kirk lost his wicket in the third over to a perfect delivery from the Karramomus opening bowler.

Rod Jones steadied, scoring freely, with Walter Jackson holding up the other end until some hard hands from Jackson resulted in an easy catch for Karramomus.

Travis Stefanos joined Jones, looking to settle and let the ball come onto the bat.

Conditions were a little challenging, with the ball moving significantly off the pitch at one end and skidding through a bit more at the other end. Jones fell for 26.

EVER WATCHFUL: Opened strongly, showing vigilance before losing his wicket for a commendable 26 runs. scored quickly but didn’t trouble the scoreboard enough.

Stefanos welcomed Mark Hornby, who was prepared to stick around and score when the opportunity presented.

Stefanos and Hornby put on a 56-run partnership in the middle overs.

Stefanos was caught behind after tea for 43, and Hornby was caught at slip for 35.

It wasn’t Archie Wilson’s day, being out for a duck.

Connor McCombe and Cale Robertson batted time and did a great job in the later overs.

McCombe was out trying to pull the ball for 12.

Leo Murphy left Robertson stranded on eight not out.

The opposition were sledging Robertson, and he showed great resilience against the unwar-

ranted remarks.

Euroa was eager to get on the field and bowl five overs to Karramomus. Stefanson and Wilson opened the bowling, with Stefanos bowling the Karramomus opener with a ball that moved a foot off the pitch.

Wilson toiled but wasn’t able to trouble the Karramomus batters too much.

On the last ball of the day, Stefanos fired in a quick off-spin delivery, resulting in a fast edge flying to first slip, which unfortunately went down; it was a very hard catch to take, but it added a lot of excitement to the finish of the day’s play.

Euroa will be looking to keep the pressure on Karramomus this week and notch up their second win before the Christmas break.

The setback reflects the challenges teams sometimes face, and the focus now shifts to regrouping for future fixtures.

THE Euroa Clay Target conducted there annual Christmas shoot on Sunday, December 10 and it was young Owen Spencer who showed all the experienced competitors how to shoot the difficult tower event.

Tower shooting required competitors to hit targets thrown from a nine metre tower overhead and young Owen outscored the field with a great score of 57/60, one point better than the rest of the field.

The annual Christmas shoot is a celebration day with great prizes for the table and with plenty of visiting competitors swelling the field, a great day was held by all.

As well as the competition, the club’s two stalwarts, Elana Towers and Heather Crosbie served a wonderful lunch including Turkey, Ham, and Chicken with all the trimmings.
