The Nationals are opening nominations after Steph Ryan announced her intention to retire at the coming state election.

Ms Hourigan grew up in Frankston where she worked delivering training in business and

human resources.

“After falling in love with Euroa, I moved with my partner Warrick and our daughter Lilly, 9, in 2017 when we bought the Euroa caravan park on the banks of Seven Creeks.

“In 2018 we welcomed our second daughter Maddy who is now four.

“When we took on the business, the park was rundown and tired.

“We have put in five

years of hard work to turn it around, tripling its revenue despite the challenges of COVID lockdowns and the Euroa floods.

“We have recently appointed full time managers and bought a small farm near Euroa which now gives me the time and space needed to devote myself to a new challenge.

“As a councillor I have been proud to work with the

community to improve local infrastructure and services.

“When I don’t agree with something, I believe it’s important to do something instead of just complaining.

“Standing for state parliament was never part of my plan, but my family and I, like millions of others, have felt the direct impact of government decisions on our business and our lives in recent years.

THE Violet Town Bowls Club is one of 12 volunteer organisations across Indi that will share $46,214 in federal grant funding, Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines has announced.

These grants range from $2700 to $5000 and will assist organisations to better support their volunteers to purchase small equipment, pay fuel, transport and training costs.

Dr Haines called each organisation to share the good news personally.

The successful applicants were recommended to the Federal Government for funding after being assessed by a panel of community leaders.

“These grants will go a long way towards supporting volun-

teers to continue their important work in the community, in work that brings people together especially in times of need,” Dr Haines said.

“According to the latest census results, 19.5 per cent of people in Indi did volunteer work with a group or organisation - that’s well above the Victorian rate of 13.3% and the Australian rate of 14pc.

“We really are a community that gives back.”

The Violet Town Bowls Club received $3900 in funding through these grants.

With the money, the club will buy a new ride-on lawn mower they say is essential for maintaining the grounds around the bowling green.

The club’s secretary, Margaret Crawford, said the funding will make a huge difference for them.

“It was a very nice surprise,” she said.

“The new mower will really look after all the grounds that surround the green.

“It’ll be a really huge help.”

Ms Crawford said that they were directed towards this grant by Helen Haines after missing out on a previous grant.

“Helen Haines was very helpful,” she said.

“To receive a call from her to let us know that we were successful was a nice touch too.”

The club has received the funding already and is expected to purchase the mower in the near future.

A diverse and varied list of volunteer groups from across the whole of Indi will benefit, with the funding to go from specialist equipment for local fire brigades to technical

equipment like a laptop and EFTPOS square for the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club.

Dr Haines said volunteers are the lifeblood of towns across Indi.

“Whether it’s at a bowls club, the CFA, the op shop, the wildlife shelter, Men’s Shed or more, volunteers make our communities exactly that communities,” she said.

“Research shows that volunteering increases our confidence, our satisfaction with our quality of life and our mental health, especially in older people.

“More than any of the work we do - these groups give us social connection, and the last few years have shown us just how important that is.

“I am proud to be able to support volunteer community groups through these grants.”

NAIDOC Week celebrated across Strathbogie Shire MULTIPLE towns and organisations across the Strathbogie Shire have participated in activities for NAIDOC week.

NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of Indigenous history, culture and achievements with events held around Australia from July 2-10.

The Strathbogie Shire Council was involved in proceedings by hosting an Indigenous documentary at the Euroa Community Cinema.

Mayor Laura Binks said council was proud to have strong links with First Nations people through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.

“Last year we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a very special flag raising ceremony after we were gifted the Taungurung Sovereign Flag by the Taungurung People,” Cr Binks said.

“We are proud of our MOU which has been a valuable document to strengthen our relationship with the Taungurung people.”

“The film depicts the true story of the first Aboriginal filmmaker William ‘Bill’ Onus,” Cr Binks said.

Mirabella guns for the Liberal Party lead

By STEVE KELLY PARTY policy on energy resource issues is one agenda item that North East resident Greg Mirabella will drive as president of the Victorian Liberal Party if elected into the role next month.

After his brief stint as Senator for Victoria for the Liberal Party and missing out on taking the third seat after the 2022 Federal Election, his focus has shifted to replace outgoing president and former attorney-general Robert Clark.

Climate change action has been a major trump card behind the rise of independents with a swag elected off the back of the issue that has become hardwired into the psyche of voters.

But it’s the function of social media in which issues like climate change have grown and how candidates have influenced voters to propel themselves into parliament that Mr Mirabella finds amazing.

While independents have had unprecedented success off the back of climate change, Mr Mirabella questioned what solutions the ‘teal’ independents have, as he views their campaigns as a compilation of slogans without any solutions.

He believes climate change should be viewed more as a state issue because the solutions lie with energy and the genera-

Mr Mirabella acknowledged that the Liberal Party will have to focus more on the dynamic nature of social media which has shown in recent years its power in swaying public opinion and perception.

He admitted that the Liberal Party has failed to adapt to the social media world in the essence that it has “accelerated the pace of change in societal thinking”.

“Social media has become a world and reality all to itself, but the way this plays out with issues like same sex marriage for example or climate, they’re huge social media issues and for everyone on social media or of a certain demographic, it’s hardwired,” he said.

“In recent years I’ve been struck more than ever by the fact that it’s the Liberal Party in Aus-

tralia that does not exist for a sectional interest.

“The Liberal Party has always been the party for the broad church but it appears this congregation is leaving for sectional interests.”

Mr Mirabella confirmed he will nominate for the presidency of the Victorian Liberal Party ahead of its state conference in August.

“My challenge going forward as potentially the Liberal president is to try and reorient the direction to address all of these things,” he said.

“Better framed policy would be one change and better energy policy would be one because while a ‘teal’ (independent) can throw slogans around for better action on climate change, as a Liberal Party we need to articulate the solutions.”

Party nominations are open to

any eligible member of the party but he believes that it’s likely he will be elected unopposed.

“It would be nice to think that mine would be the only nomination because it seems based on the number and type of people who have contacted me that I seem to have pretty broad support,” Mr Mirabella.

The unpaid position could be construed as a thankless task that is time consuming and whoever takes on the job will have their work cut out for them.

But Mr Mirabella said now he’s free from the Senate he is widely seen as someone who commands fairly broad support and respect within the party.

“I’m probably one of the few who are in a position to join things back together organisationally speaking,” he said.

“The Liberal Party both state and federally has a lot of work to do and this last federal election has highlighted some issues not just for us but the Labor Party as well.

“The vote is splintering and I think it’s fair to say that younger people, in particular, are voting away from all the major parties.

“There is always a bunch of people who have the energy, motivation and time and in this day and age they’re all active on social media relaying their message way beyond their weight of numbers.”

WITH Steph Ryan confirming that she will step away from politics at the upcoming state election, the seat of Euroa is now up for grabs.

With Ms Ryan having held the seat since its conception in 2014, Euroa has been safely held by The Nationals across the last two elections.

The seat was created through the abolition of the districts of Seymour and Benalla in a redistribution of electoral boundaries and came into effect at the 2014 Victorian state election.

The Benalla district was safely held by Nationals’ member Bill Sykes in the 2006 and 2010 elections, whereas Seymour had a bit more movement with Australian Labor Party (ALP) member Ben Hardman winning in 2006 and Liberal Party member Cindy McLeish successfully elected in 2010.

New rockies bridge nears finish line

By GUS RIDDER THE building of Strathbogie Shire’s newest bridge over the Rockies on Sevens Creek is nearly completed.

Works have progressed steadily on the new suspension footbridge, with construction being undertaken in the past months.

The bridge is expected to be a welcome addition to the popular walking track in Euroa.

When works were beginning at the end of last year, Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks spoke of the impact the bridge would have for the community.

“Our shire is known for its incredible walking tracks and the Apex Walking Track

in Euroa is no exception,” Cr Binks said.

“The track is well utilised by our community and visitors, so this is a fantastic way to showcase our beautiful environment along the Seven Creeks while also ensuring pedestrian safety.”

Community members recently learned about the intricacies of the construction process at a Sausage by the Sevens event hosted by council on June 4.

About 50 people attended the sausage sizzle, which was held on a damp Saturday morning and was cooked by Friends of the Sevens.

Engineers and the bridge contractor chatted with community members and

Councillors about the footbridge, with many questions asked and answered.

The Rockies footbridge is a community-led project which will provide a safe connection to the Apex Community walking track, providing two-way and all abilities access over the Sevens.

Depending on the weather, there are hopes to have the footbridge completed and operational by the end of July.

The project was made possible thanks to $560,000 in Federal Government funding from the from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.

COVID cases confirmed at GraniteHill TWO cases of COVID-19 were detected in residents at the GraniteHill aged care facility last week, resulting in restrictions for visitors.

The cases were confirmed on Thursday, July 7 with two residents being placed in to quarantine immediately.

The entire facility, which includes GraniteHill, the acute hospital and the gym, have been closed to visitors until at least Thursday, July 13.

Euroa Health chief executive Cherree Hunter discussed the matter in a public statement on Thursday evening.

“We have notified public health officials as required and are following procedures recommended by the Department of Health and the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia,” she said.

“The residents are in quarantine and we are taking every step as recommended by authorities to contain the spread.

“We want to make residents, their families, our dedicated staff and our community aware of this situation and reassure everyone we are working tirelessly to protect our residents and staff.”

Neighbourhood character detail needed ON July 5 we attended one of Strathbogie Shire’s Meet the Planner sessions for Violet Town.

We were able to discuss issues with both the strategic planner and the senior statutory planner during the one-hour session.

One of our main concerns is the lack of detail about ‘neighbourhood character’ in the planning scheme, especially in relation to Violet Town, and in particular how this can be protected with future residential subdivisions being likely.

The General Residential Zone, as it currently stands with no local schedule in the planning scheme, will permit houses up to three levels with one-metre side and rear boundary offsets, and a range of other things that may not be suitable for our town.

It was an informative and productive dialogue.

The current review of the planning

scheme gives individuals and communities the opportunity to request that a neighbourhood character study be undertaken to identify the particular characteristics that should influence the pattern of future development.

Requests can be in various forms, such as emails to individual councillors, a community petition, online in the neighbourhood character feedback section of the Strathbogie Planning Scheme Review page, and so on.

A schedule to the General Residential Zone can be used by local councils to set out preferred township development objectives.

A neighbourhood character study will help identify these.

Empathy is unique to our species STRATHBOGIE Shire Council must be congratulated on bringing up for discussion

the structure of our national day of ‘’celebration’’ on January 26.

Perhaps a point that should be noted is that empathy is unique to our species - no other animal to have evolved on this planet has empathy (despite what some pet owners would have us believe).

Empathy came about as a result of what turned out to be the basic tenet of our survival mechanism - our superior intelligence.

A human being without empathy is yet to fully emerge from our dog eat dog, animal past.

Hopefully, in future discussions on this subject it will be realised that a racist is the lowest form of humanity - easily identifiable and indelibly stained and yet to fully emerge from our animal past - and that we can only go forward as a nation hand in hand with the aboriginal people, who were in fact the first refugees on this harsh continent - a mere 65 thousand years ago.

We do need to keep things in perspective, don’t you think?

KIDS were treated to a NAIDOC Week event held at the Euroa Memorial Oval last Wednesday.

The event allowed children to participate in First Nations games and learn more about culture, NAIDOC week and connection to country and people.

Organised by local resident Jimmy Ivill and My Future

Academy, the event had Katie Thompson from Be.ME Movement Education in the Northern Territory help run a session at the oval for interested kids of all ages.

Around 25 children were joined by their parents at the oval, with the educational session proving to be an exciting day for all those that participated.

In addition to the games, those in attendance were

taught about Welcome to Country and heard from guest speakers.

The event was one of three NAIDOC Week activities across the state involving Be.ME Movement Education, with other days held in Melbourne and Albury.

Despite the cold weather, the kids were able to keep active while learning the significance of NAIDOC Week and Indigenous culture.

The event was attended by the Euroa Community Action Group, with president Laura Baker discussing the fun that they had during the day.

“There were some great games for everyone and we loved learning a new way to acknowledge Country, that wa wa means hello in Taungurung language and how we can all get up, stand up, and show up this NAIDOC week and beyond,” she said.

Euroa Community Cinema looking for feedback THE Euroa Community Cinema is currently accepting feedback online, with locals having the opportunity to provide their preferences for movie selections and refreshments.

Community members will also be able to fill out a general survey about the cinema online.

The online surveys are available until the end of the month, with a variety of topics to be dis-

cussed.

Responses will be sent directly to those involved at the cinema, helping them ensure that movies, refreshments and more are suitable for the community.

The cinema has been jampacked since its re-opening at the end of May, with the refurbishments proving to be popular with locals.

Last week, the cinema

screened the documentary ‘Ablaze’, as part of the Strathbogie Shire Council’s participation in NAIDOC Week.

The cinema has also been widely used throughout the most recent school holidays, with several discounted and free screenings on just for the kids.

A handful of movies have already been proposed for August, with locals able to vote for

their preference up to July 24.

These movies include Thor: Love and Thunder (M), Falling for Figaro (M), Minions: Rise of Gru (PG), The Black Phone (M), Where the Crawdads Sing (CTC) and Lee Kernaghan: Boy From The Bush (CTC).

Battle of the bands set

THE search is on to unearth the best local talent in the Hume Goulburn Valley Region with the inaugural running of the ‘Out of Nowhere’ Battle Of The Bands competition.

The competition will hit its climax on the eve of the Euroa Music Festival on Friday, November 4, with five grand finalists set to perform in the main street of Euroa in front of what will be an excited music-loving crowd.

With so much up for grabs, event organisers are optimistic young bands will be eager to enter.

The winner will secure their spot on the 2023 Euroa Music Festival line-up, plus win a recording, production and mentoring package from Small Time Group in Brunswick.

All grand finalists will receive tickets to attend the Euroa Music Festival on Saturday, November 5.

The ‘Out of Nowhere’ battle of the bands competition is to be coordinated by Strathbogie Shire Freeza and the team at Euroa Music Festival.

Friends of Euroa Hospital hold final afternoon tea THE Friends of Euroa Hospital, an auxiliary group founded to fundraise for the hospital, gathered together for an afternoon tea at Euroa Health’s education room last week.

The afternoon tea, hosted

by Euroa Health, will be the final meeting for the group as they wind up many years of service and fundraising for the hospital.

The Friends of Euroa Hospital was founded in May 2005 when a group of lady golfers gathered together and created a provisional committee with the aim of raising funds for the acute hospital.

Seven people attended this meeting, with two remaining as current members and some passing away.

A public meeting was then held, with Euroa Health’s volunteer coordinator Bev McLaine thanking the group for providing community

help to the hospital.

It was decided that the group would have two major and distinct functions.

One would involve personally visiting acute patients with consent, offering goods for sale from a trolley.

The second function would be to fundraise to cover the cost of items on the nurses’ wish list.

The trolley has remained a successful initiative, with twice weekly services happening with members using a roster system.

Fundraising events have also proven to be beneficial to the hospital, with raffles, street stalls, bridge days, guest speakers, lunches, garden parties, luncheons and barbecues all featured over the years.

The funds have been used for a variety of purchases by the hospital, including the garden by the gym and garden upkeep.

Two outdoor tables and chairs, clocks, microwaves, dishwashers, screened blinds for the veranda, patient record trolleys, underlays, an outfitting of the palliative care room, donations to the EHI building fund, renovations for the hospital bathrooms and more have been made possible thanks to these donations.

The most recent meeting held last Wednesday was attended by representatives from Euroa Health including chief executive Cherree Hunter.

During the afternoon tea, the group decided to allocate the remaining funds of over $1000 towards a new tree for the gardens on site.

Euroa Health has expressed their gratitude towards their group for their continued support and fundraising, acknowledging the impact that they had towards the hospital and patients.

Tolerance; means being kind & respectful to those who DO hold different views, not forcing them to agree and affirm practices against their beliefs. Live and let live.

Christians protest peacefully. Jesus posed no physical threat either but the powers wanted Him dead. Likewise, Jesus followers are being persecuted and murdered like never before. Soon the Lord will favour His faithful Church, when the Rapture occurs (Luke 21:36, 2 Thess 4:17), and they will be borne away, in a nano-second, safe (john !4:1-4) from the following 7 years of earthly distresses and woes.

The consequence of millions of people suddenly absent, is that the ‘restraining’’ spiritual influence for good, will also be missing, allowing evils’ darkness to be unleashed. Only Jesus Second Coming will prevent WW3 from destroying earth..(Matt.24:22) The human hearts’ desire for purpose, meaning, hope, everlasting life and heaven are indeed Gods’ faithful promises. (Jer.29;11, John 3:16) Whereas, godless doctrines, beginning with the all-invasive lie of evolution undermines faith and renders lives meaningless and without hope.

Flood victims urged to mentally prepare FLOOD victims returning to inundated homes have been urged to mentally prepare and reach out for support from people around them as evacuation orders ease.

Federal relief payments of up to $1000 are now available for residents of 29 local government areas, while NSW residents are being urged to donate money to GIVIT so help can be better coordinated.

As rain returned in areas across the state, including Sydney, authorities warned

of several road closures and public transport disruptions due to flooding, Some 37,000 people remained under evacuation orders on Saturday as the State Emergency Service said it was working through easing its emergency notices.

“There’s obviously ramifications with that. It’s not just a free-for-all, run back in there,” Adam Jones from the SES told AAP. “There will be debris, their homes won’t have been checked, so if it has been

inundated, there could be structural issues.

“The electrics might need to be looked at by an electrician. There could be mud and sewage everywhere.”

Flood-affected residents returning to properties should wear PPE, boots, gloves and have sanitiser handy.

Mr Jones also urged people to mentally prepare to see their homes significantly damaged, and to reach out for community support.

“Everyone’s going to be a bit stressed under these cir-

cumstances,” he said.

The federal government expanded the number of areas able to access relief payments on Saturday evening, adding six more flood-affected councils to the list.

Payments of $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child are available to people impacted by the flooding.

Recovery efforts in the state will be overseen by former detective Dean Betts and fellow Resilience NSW director Mel Gore, Emergency Services Minister Steph

Cooke said on Saturday.

“These appointments will help to ensure flood-affected communities receive support in a timely and efficient way,” Ms Cooke said.

Flooding continued in the Hunter and lower Hawkesbury regions on Saturday, with more than 1000 government personnel on standby to assist.

Some 37 Victorian emergency personnel also travelled to NSW to help with the rescue and clean-up, taking the total number of crew from the state to 94.

FALSE START: A government bid to stop NSW rail workers taking industrial action has been dismissed.

Ms Cooke said the immediate priorities were damage assessments and making sure displaced residents could access emergency accommodation.

On Sunday, Ms Cooke said the GIVIT donation hub would allow the NSW government to better direct donated money for flood victims.

“By donating through the official channels people can know their generosity is going directly to those who’ve been hit hardest by the flooding,” she said.

The state government has had its case against the Rail, Tram and Bus Union dismissed by the Fair Work Commission on Saturday, after earlier in the week losing an initial bid to block the action.

The NSW government and Sydney Trains sought to termi-

nate all industrial action taken by the rail union, arguing it was endangering life and causing economic impacts to the state.

It also called for a decision to be returned within five days.

The commission handed down its full decision on Saturday, dismissing the case by the government in full.

“I find that no part of the protected action of the Unions ... would threaten to endanger the life, the personal safety or

health, or the welfare, of the population or of part of it, or cause significant damage to the Australian economy,” Fair Work deputy president Bryce Cross wrote.

The union’s NSW secretary Alex Claassens called the battle a waste of taxpayer’s money.

“The NSW Government ran, and lost, a case aimed at stopping protected industrial action that doesn’t even currently exist.”

Aus jobless rate closes in on 50-year low AUSTRALIA’S jobless rate is tipped to hit its lowest level in 48 years when official data is released later this week.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will release its June labour force survey on Thursday.

CBA Group economists expect around 25,000 jobs to be added in the month, with the unemployment rate easing from 3.9 per cent to 3.8 per cent, the lowest level since August 1974.

NAB economists say the participation rate should be sustained at 66.7 per cent.

The Commonwealth Bank’s household spending inten-

tions index for June will be released on Tuesday, alongside the ABS’s household spending indicator for May. Also on Tuesday, the latest consumer confidence data will be released by ANZ-Roy Morgan and the WestpacMelbourne Institute.

It is expected the surveys will underline consumer concern about rising inflation and interest rates.

The National Australia Bank will issue its June business survey featuring updates on confidence and conditions on Tuesday.

Confidence and conditions eased in May, but remain

above their long-run averages with employment conditions hitting a 10-month high.

Economists will be examining the ABS’s March quarter building activity report on Wednesday for the latest indications of dwelling starts and “work yet to be done” estimates.

Australian shares had their best week in more than three months last week, with commodity prices rebounding.

They closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Australian shares index posting a weekly gain of 2.1 per cent.

He said there are no plans to continue industrial action next week, and in recent days has accused the government of overplaying the union’s role in network disruptions.

However the NSW government said its Fair Work Commission application had led to unions cancelling industrial action.

“By the union’s own admission taking action in the Fair Work Commission was the only

way the Government could force the unions to listen and keep our rail network operating with 60 per cent of the bans imposed by the unions now withdrawn,” Acting Transport Minister Natalie Ward said in a statement on Saturday.

“We have a world-class train network, and the only reason it isn’t providing world-class services is because the unions are playing politics. The people of NSW deserve better.”

Probe into fatal helicopter crash in NSW INVESTIGATORS are combing the wreckage from a fatal helicopter crash on the outskirts of Sydney.

Emergency services responded to reports of the crash at around midday on Saturday, hampered by difficult, flood-soaked bushland northwest of the city.

The pilot in his 60s was the sole occupant, and Australia’s transport safety watchdog announced it had launched an investigation into the crash.

A news helicopter was one of the first on the scene with pilot Andrew Millett telling Nine the crash had instantly

appeared not survivable.

“You could see there had been an immense impact,” Mr Millett said.

Mr Millett knew the man, and described him as a veteran pilot who was friendly and generous.

The crash, which occurred shortly before 11:50am in bushland at South Maroota, drew police, paramedics, firefighters and the State Emergency Service.

They found the helicopter well alight upon arrival and battled a small blaze that had started before police later established a crime scene.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the craft was a Bell 206L LongRanger Helicopter.

Flight and helicopter experts from the bureau’s Sydney and Brisbane offices are involved.

But the watchdog is also calling for any witnesses to come forward with any information of the chopper at any stage during its flight.

It is expected to hand down an initial report in six to eight weeks.

Police are expected to address the media later on Sunday morning.

Landholders talk about protecting Grey Box SUSAN Sleigh, project officer with the Longwood Plains Conservation Management Network interviewed three landholders who have received grants under the ‘Linking Landscapes and Communities: Enhancing Grey Box Grassy Woodlands’ project.

The project works with landowners, community groups, traditional owners and scientists to improve the condition of the threatened Grey Box Grassy Woodlands and Derived Native Grasslands vegetation communities.

Grey Box Grassy Woodlands are an important natural environment, providing habitats for a variety of species including the nationally threatened swift parrot, regent honeyeater, turnip copper burr and small purple-pea.

Derived Native Grasslands are areas where the Grey Box trees and associated shrubs have been removed, but the native grasses remain.

Ms Sleigh spoke to Robert McMaster of Nagambie, Kevin Hynam of Locksley and Mark Carroll of Molka about their involvement in the project and how they received funding.

The landowners were asked how they found out about the project and the funding opportunities.

“Susan of the Longwood Plains Conservation Management Network told me about it,” Mr McMaster said.

Both Mr Hynam and Mr Carroll said they had heard about it through Grey Box field days at David Taylor’s Nagambie property in December 2020.

Each of the landowners explained their motivations for getting involved, with a common theme being conservation for the region.

“I wanted to retain the old Grey Box remnants for the next

“As the area has been a stock camp for generations, I want to reduce the weeds in the site over time.”

“I observed that we were losing trees since we moved here years ago,” Mr Hynam said.

“I was conscious of trying to get more trees and shrubs into the farm.”

“I was new to the district and was impressed by the remnant vegetation but saw a lack of understorey,” Mr Carroll said.

“I had a Landcare background and saw the benefits of replicating environmental works on my previous farm on the new property.”

Each of the men said the process was simple, and appreciated those that provided assistance.

“There was No trouble at all

and I was greatly assisted by the Project Officer,” Mr McMaster said.

“LandMate (prisoner work crew) was fantastic and the boys did a good job.”

“Communication was good and everything fell into place,” Mr Hynam said.

“There was the right amount of lead time to do the fencing, site preparation and revegetation.”

“It was a straight forward process however the process takes time from inception until the plants and seed are in the ground,” Mr Carroll said.

“Ground preparation is the key to success and in my case involved spraying annual weeds three times (late spring, after autumn break and prior to hand panting and direct seeding) and ripping was done over summer.

“It is worth spending the extra time on preparation.”

The landowners expect to see a variety of benefits from participating in the project, ranging from conservation to property valuations.

“It will be a plus for bird life and insects,” Mr McMaster said.

“I see potentially an increase in land value of the property.

“Longer term - shelter and shade for stock,” Mr Hynam said.

“Short term - more birds on the farm.”

“Establishment of understorey for improved habitat for local native birds and fauna firstly,” Mr Carroll said.

“From an agricultural viewpoint, there will be additional shade and shelter for stock - in my case merino sheep.

“This is where we live and work so the native vegetation improves the ambience and lifestyle on the farm.”

Providing final thoughts on their participation, each man shared that they were pleased with how things had been going and looked forward to seeing the benefits.

“There was more than adequate funding, it was a smooth system,” Mr McMaster said.

“I’m a strong supporter of Dhurringile LandMate -they construct a good fence.”

“I was happy enough with the project however 40 metres of farming land is fairly extravagant so funding was important,” Mr Hynam said.

“I do see the area as being a genuine offset for carbon emissions on the farm.”

“Because I am new to the district, this was an opportunity to become more part of the community,” Mr Carroll said.

The project is supported through the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority through funding from the Australian Government.

Policeman gives interesting talk to Probus club THE Probus Club of Euroa welcomed Leading Senior Constable Lucas Paul as guest speaker for their June meeting.

Ld Snr Const Paul is well known in Euroa and area for his commitment to community safety and wellbeing, including youth programs and sport.

While at the Probus meeting, he was able to answer some general questions that people had about keeping safe.

Ld Snr Const Paul discussed the changes in his career and how he enjoyed policing in the city, but loves working in the country.

The variety in the work and making a difference as a member of an effective team were his key reasons for this.

Probians asked questions about road safety, online scams and theft prevention.

Ld Snr Const Paul spoke about mobility scooters, and how these are registered like any vehicle and rules depend on wattage, with regulations for the distance golf buggies may travel.

He also spoke about how the police and council regularly discuss

Road safety was given considerable time in the discussion, and Ld Snr Const Paul said that overall, VicRoads wire barriers have helped to prevent

highway collisions.

According to Ld Snr Const Paul, drink driving has dropped and drug driving is being closely monitored.

Speed is still a problem in regional areas, but air bags and seat belts continue to save lives.

When discussing online scams, Ld Snr Const Paul spoke about how plausible these can be, particularly for elderly community members.

Some tips were provided, such as being careful not to give any information to scammers who claim to be calling from your bank.

It was also recommended to question cold callers closely, or simply hang up!

On the question of theft, Ld Snr Const Paul referred to the positive relationships and awareness in Euroa and surrounds, with people watching out for one another on the farm and in town.

Euroa Probus president Fred Jungwirth thanked Ld Snr Const Paul for his time.

“Persuasion and getting alongside people in the community are key policing skills - and that’s exactly what you do,” he said.

AUSTRALIA DAY: I have just read about the Strathbogie Shire Council’s debate on whether to keep Australia Day on January 26 or an alternate date.

I must have missed news on that while crook.

Members of the Avenel RSL and Avenel CWA were invited to a meeting at the Seymour RSL in the mid 1980s to learn about the “Save our Australian Flag campaign” and the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign.

Annie Young and I Di Laverie (now Grant) attended.

The upshot was for local towns to form an Australia Day Committee to hold some small Australia Day celebrations each year.

They were donated around $100 towards refreshments for Australia Day attendees by the Seymour Keep Australia Beautiful committee - Then councils chipped in later on.

The towns were encouraged to keep our Australian flag flying at all town functions.

The “Keep Australia beautiful” campaign also began to take root.

Avenel entered into the Tidy Towns “Keep Australia Beautiful” competition in the 1980s and won a regional prize.

Our first Australia Day celebrations were held in Jubilee Park and a small band of CWA and RSL ladies made afternoon tea in the tennis clubrooms.

The flag raising was done by the Brownies or RSL personnel and someone spoke on what Australia meant to them.

Later on, Australia Day awards were formed and are still being presented to locals worthy of recognition.

I was very proud to be a part of these inaugural celebrations and the Tidy Towns competition with my Avenel Youth Group members and the community and have attended an Australia Day activity ever since.

I was awarded an Australia Day Council achievement award on January 26, 1994 for my services to the Seymour Community and on January 26, 2015 I was awarded the Strathbogie Shire wide Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for services to my community here.

I was thrilled that some of my family was present at these Australia Day celebrations as they have always supported me with my endeavours.

I would like to see Australia Day remain on January 26 as our national day.

I say this without disrespect, to any person, creed or race.

We are now a multi-cultural country and our new citizens are very proud to be sworn in as new Aussies on that day.

It means a lot to many people in many ways but it binds us all as Australians.

I hope our councillors consult more with their constituents that they represent before making a call on any changes for Australia Day after 2023.

THE Rotary Club of Euroa ushered in a new team at the club’s changeover dinner held at the Euroa Bowling Club on Friday, June 24.

Current president Richard Noble, who had led his team into a year when Rotary activities were slowly returning to normal, was pleased to be handing over the reins to the new president Bob Irving.

Brian Bamford, MC for the evening, welcomed guests including assistant district governor Paul and his wife, Meredith Miegel, Councillor Kristy Hourigan and Lions club members Ray and Dawn Day. Past presidents and their wives were also welcomed which included Eric and Margot Lund, Richard Nettleton, Audrey McIntosh, Eddie and Helen Voogt, Helen Dewan and Ross and Denise Holt.

As COVID had interrupted many of the usual Rotary events which had been planned during 2020 and 2021, this evening was used as a time to say goodbye to some members and there was also cause for celebration.

There were farewells to Richard Nettleton, Don Board, Dennis Rebbeck and Roger Morgan when current club members spoke on the contribution of these members to the club in their time with Rotary.

Each member received a special plaque to remember their time at Euroa.

MC Brian Bamford took great pleasure in speaking of the impressive involvement and commitment to Rotary

Mr Tehan responded by humbly discussing his time with the Rotary club.

“This club and the members have provided the impetus for my ongoing involvement but I would also like to stress that none of this would have been possible without the incredible support of my wife Jenny,” Mr Tehan said.

“I really don’t see that I have achieved anything in Rotary but rather I have done a whole lot of things in Rotary.”

Further cause for celebration was the club’s continuity for 75 years.

The Euroa club was chartered in 1946 and at that time the club understood the community and were willing to give back and this has not changed.

“Today, the tag might be different but the issues are still there so if the club is not out doing things for the community, then the community and the club are worse off for that,” Mr Tehan said.

A final special recognition was to Michael Stubbe who was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for his service to the club in particular community service and to the Euroa Farmer’s Market.

This was enthusiastically endorsed by those present.

In presenting his annual report, Richard Noble highlighted that his year as president was off to a rocky start with COVID impacting on club events and activities.

Club highlights for the year included a donation to Foodlink in Shepparton, ongoing support of the school music program at Euroa Secondary College with a $1400 sponsorship, catering at the monthly markets, the RSL Anzac Day gunfire breakfast and the Ride the Ranges event.

A community barbecue for the Drought Relief Program event in May 2022 was well staffed by club members and the club were also pleased to donate $4000 to the Tongan volcanic fund managed by Rotary in Tonga.

Support for Beyond Blue was also demonstrated with a substantial donation and socially the club had a very pleasant Sunday lunch at Fowles Winery.

Meeting on a Wednesday and fortnightly has been a major change to how the local club now runs.

The new board was then sworn in and they included Bob Irving (president), Jo Rossignuolo (secretary), John King (treasurer), Helen Waterworth (president elect), Richard Noble (past president), Bill Sargood (vice president), Michael Tehan (membership), Richard McGeehan (international), Ronnie Mason (youth service), Trevor Smith (vocation service), Bernie O’Dea (community service) and Peter Morley (club service).

The theme for 2022/2023 is ‘Imagine Rotary’ which gives extensive scope for many projects to be developed and to come to fruition.

President Bob Irving outlined his goals for the upcoming years.

“I would like to have a focus on getting back to projects, working with other community groups, with friends of Rotary and establishing relationships with other organisations and businesses in town,” he said.

“It would also be wonderful having more Rotarians involved with community education, adult education, support for the schools and mental health.

“The club will be moving to attracting new members that will reflect the diversity in our local community and there are positive moves in that direction already as well as maintaining the relationship with Probus.”

President Irving also envisaged the opportunity for trips, visits and fun events.

“Our district governor will visit the club to outline the new regionalisation proposal for Rotary in Australia and a scholarship program for training indigenous pharmacists to work in rural communities,” Mr Irving said.

As always, the club’s members will get right behind a new president to provide support for ongoing and new projects that will keep the Rotary Club of Euroa to the forefront of this community.

Farmers market returns to Euroa

LET’S hope for a sunny and dry day for the Euroa Village Farmers Market this Saturday, July 16.

All the stalls will be situated along Kirkland Avenue, so rug up and come along for a stroll of discovery with new and unique crafts, fresh food and take away food.

The market will be open from 9am to 1pm.

All the craftspeople create one off pieces, whether they be ceramics, knits, sewn items, soaps, candles or jewellery.

There will be a number of different plant stalls at the market, all selling something different.

This includes seedlings or mature plants, veg or ornamental, native or exotic.

Two days after saving five match points in the semifinals, Ebden and Purcell battled for four hours, 11 minutes on Saturday to defeat Croatia’s defending champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-4 7-6 (10-2) in an equally epic title match.

and Purcell are the first Aussies to reign at the All England Club since Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge captured their sixth Wimbledon crown 22 years ago.

Before the “The Woodies” dominated, the “Super Macs” - Paul McNamee and Peter McNamara - claimed two Wimbledon titles in 1980 and ‘82.

The “Super Macs” and “Woodies” were the last of an incredible batch of Australian pairings that dominated on the hallowed London grass courts post-World War II. Between 1948 and McNamara and McNamee’s first victory, famous teams like Quist

FARMER FINED: An Avenel Farmer has received a $40,000 fine after over 260 sheep had died.

Avenel farmer fined for animal cruelty AN Avenel farmer has been fined $40,000 after pleading guilty to 34 charges of animal cruelty.

The Shepparton Magistrates’ Court heard the charges related to a failure to provide supervision and proper and sufficient feed to about 1500 sheep by an Avenel farmer.

The court also imposed a conditional order with monitoring for three years.

Agriculture Victoria officers first attended the property in early June 2019 in response to a complaint.

They found many dead

sheep, most were pregnant or had recently lambed.

Officers attended on five further occasions and issued several ‘notices to comply’.

Over this time, 25 sheep had to be humanely euthanised to prevent further pain and suffering and they found 236 dead sheep.

Agriculture Victoria compliance manager Daniel Bode said despite receiving numerous notices to comply, the accused took insufficient action.

“A significant number of sheep died and experienced pain and suffering,” he said.

“Apart from the obvious pain and suffering of the animals, animal welfare breaches can jeopardise Victoria’s reputation as a humane and responsible food producer, affecting all producers.

“This reminds all livestock producers that the Victorian Government and our community will not tolerate animal cruelty.”

Boyhood fan kicks winning goal in AFL A BOYHOOD Richmond fan, Gold Coast’s Noah Anderson was in no mood to be generous to the Tigers with his after-thesiren AFL match-winning shot.

Anderson was perhaps the coolest head at Metricon Stadium when he slotted a goal to secure a remarkable comeback two-point win for the Suns.

The 21-year-old realised any AFL players’ childhood dream by winning the game for his team with a kick, coincidentally against the team he barracked for growing up.

“That was going through my head when I marked it,” Anderson told AAP. “I was thinking about that, I’ve got a lot of mates who I’m going to say were Richmond supporters.

“It was pretty special.

“I’ve never beaten them.”

Anderson’s moment capped a game where he played a key role in a comeback where the Suns reeled a 40-point deficit early in the third term to claim a win which keeps their hopes of a maiden finals berth alive.

He finished with two games and 26 touches to be one of the Suns’ best.

Fittingly, good mate Matt Rowell was also crucial in the dying minutes for the hosts - kicking a booming goal and providing impetus at the stoppages to spark the big finish.

The pair’s AFL stories have been joined since they were the top two picks in the 2019 draft but Suns coach Stuart Dew says the story is now about two young players

who are forging fine careers of their own sideby-side.

“Two very special players and they always get mentioned together,” Dew said.

“I feel like they get mentioned together now because of the standard of their performance at the age they are, and the maturity, their will to win.

“I love the way they go about it.

“It’s inspiring.

“I wish I did what they do when I played ... because they’re unbelievable the way they go about it.

Tedesco eyes Origin series win NSW captain James Tedesco doesn’t need a history lesson as the Blues seek to right the wrongs of the past at Suncorp Stadium in tonight’s State of Origin decider.

The Blues have an ugly record in winner-takes-all Origin contests, having won just one of the last nine series deciders.

Tedesco was the man

who scored the winning try in that sole victory - in 2019 in Sydney - but he describes winning in Brisbane in Origin III as “a different beast”.

The Blues have won just two deciders in Brisbane in the history of the threegame series.

Tedesco has the chance to join Laurie Daley (1994) and Danny Buderus (2005) as the only NSW captains

to clinch the series in game three in the Maroons’ backyard.

“I know it was done in 1994 and 2005 and some of those boys have come and talked to us about how it’s a different beast out there,” Tedesco told AAP. “It’s a great opportunity for us. It hasn’t been won by NSW up there (at Suncorp) for a long time.”

The A grade winner and winner of the Monthly Medal was Annette Mills with 32pts.

The winner of B & C grade was Anne Burns with 26 pts.

The 9 hole winner was Irene Keogh with 19pts.

18 hole balls down the line went to Annette 32pts, Irene 30pts and Anne 26pts.

9 hole balls down the line went to Irene 17 pts, Margaret Harrison 14pts and Annette on a c/b from Karyn Thompson both on 14pts.

Anne Burns managed N/P on the 8th.

CHICKEN RUN RESULTS July 7 THERE were 23 players for a game of Stableford on the front nine.

The winner was Alan Anderson with 22pts.

Michael Mansfield was R/ up with 19 pts.

Deb Ringin managed N/P on the 8th.

MEN’S A MIXED four ball best ball was a great success for the Nagambie golf club with the number of pairings for a mid-winter competition impressive, the sun shone and the wind stayed away for most of the day allowing for some good scores to be carded.

The winners of the mixed division was regular playing pair Anne Burns and Dave Fullager putting together a classy round of 41 points.

This was one better than

recently crowned club champion Moz Fowler with Shaun Bryant in tow finishing with 40 points, the top three pairs was completed with Karyn Thompson carrying Des Phelan all the way to 38 points.

A men’s division was also run on the day for all those unable to find a partner, the popular winning partnership was Rhys Shepherd and Jeff Lodding who were run away winners on 44 points, Jeremy Ezard and John Hurley were next best on a solid 40.

Nearest the pins went to Andrea Richards with a stellar strike on the 16th for the ladies, Lindsay Hall with the last attempt of the day claiming the third, Alan ``Angry” Anderson with a slick iron from off the 13th and Des Phelan having learnt something from watching his partner all day go close on the 16th.

Many thanks to both the ladies and men for turning out in such great numbers, we hope to do it all again sometime soon, next week’s golf will be a stableford event with S.Bryant on office duty and T. Baldwin in the bar.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB A BEAUTIFUL morning greeted the juniors on Saturday and nine players were keen to hit the course after a short holiday break.

Conrad Brown won the scratch by virtue of a countback from Lachy O’Brien, both players posting very handy scores.

Owen Smith was one shot back - his putting held him back from blitzing the field.

Rayden Hannigan continued his good form taking out the handicap, two shots

ahead of Kevin Traynor with Bob Taylor White was close behind in third.

Ruby Hannigan won the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza and Gardens voucher again, having played a miraculous chip in and continues to show signs of a bright future.

Next week will be a team event where we will have a two-person Ambrose.

We will do a draw for partners and local identity and long-time supporter of junior sports in Avenel, namely Bill Donovan, has graciously sponsored some prizes for the event so get practicing kids and see you all next week.

The men’s competition was stroke off the white tees in near perfect conditions.

There’s been a lot of work going on around the course and it looks great.

Having never broken 100 before the round, 11 year old Campbell Smith did just that and then some, shooting 94 off the stick for a fantastic 62 nett.

Needless to say, he blew the rest of the field away.

Runner up was Dave Fullager with 71 nett, and was heard to comment that it was just another day of being bested by a junior, not just at Avenel but Nagambie as well.

Still a good score Dave.

Lineballs went to Matt Eddy nett 72 and Mark Hannigan with nett 76 on a countback.

No NTP’s were claimed but the Drive and Pitch on the seventh went to Mark Hannigan and Campbell Smith claimed the 17th.

We had four visitors from Euroa join us, the day was clear with the greens holding and would you believe running.

The winner of the ladies was Ria Pearce and the win-

ner of the men’s with a great score was Ed Harding with 41 points.

The handicapper immediately reduced his handicap to twelve, a lineball was won by a visitor from Euroa Dale Macintosh.

Nearest the pin on the Eighth was won by a visitor Dick Farmer whose taking a liking to the course, Kerry Hewlett is liking her new clubs as she won a ball on the 17th.

Ed Harding was really firing on Tuesday as he had consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth, his lobbing and putting were sensational.

Again we had visitors from Euroa join us; they must be enjoying the course and our company.

The day was clear with a cool breeze, the winner on a three way countback was Shae Vand Dur Schoor on 76.

Lineballs were won by Chris Bennett76 and Richard Hayes also on 76, he was playing with a borrowed putter which he hasn’t quite mastered, once he does look out.

He was pretty happy with himself as it was the first time he’s finished a round with the same ball.

Coach Galvin notches up 400

By PATRICK O’MEARA ON the football field, the Leggers were jumped in the first quarter of the seniors but managed to jag two important opening quarter goals to give them some belief.

It led to increased defensive efforts across the remaining three quarters, with the team recording a respectable five goals.

Better performers were Geordie McMurtrie, Kobe Galvin and Reece Dimech.

A big congratulations to

coach Michael Galvin who turned out for his 400th game, while in the twilight of his career it is great to watch him continue to apply his craft.

Another notable performance was last minute call-up Justin Purdey, fresh from a best-on-ground performance in the reserves stepping up to be among the best players in the seniors.

It was a tough contest in the reserves, with the Leggers drawing to within a couple of kicks of the Lakers at three-quarter-time.

Purdey was dominant in the midfield, getting forward and jagging two majors, while Bryce McCrimmon was in good touch along with Jack Keane, Josh Dowell and Luke Allison.

The under-18s came up against the ladder leaders and took positives from their relentless tackling pressure.

Better players were Dakota Pellegrino, Luke Allison and Ben Lay. The matchday was capped off with a well-attended and successful Bonfire night

with many comments about the high quality of the ‘tucker’.

Kudos to the chefs Rob Welsh and Ryan Fielden and a big thank you to event organisers Mark ‘Tatong’ Goodall and Kathryn ‘Katong’ Goodall.

It was great to also have former club treasurer Matt and Shirley Emmitt and family back at Redlegs Stadium, coinciding with the school holidays.

‘Cam Mooney Day’ is also fast approaching, with the former Geelong and North

Euroa reserves defeat Echuca RESERVES THE reserves team took to the field against their opponents with a strong team.

This was going to be a very good contest between two strong reserves teams.

From the first bounce Echuca were quickly on the scoreboard with two goals showing that they had come to play.

The reserves team steadied themselves and began to match the Echuca side at the contest and on the scoreboard to hold the lead at the quarter time break.

This continued for the rest of the game, with both sides equal to the contest with supporters of both teams not sure who would come away with the four points.

To the credit of our reserves team, they were able to hold the lead from late in the first quarter to the final siren.

The writer felt that our team let Echuca in during the first half of the game by butchering the ball by foot.

This was a good win by our team against good reserves opposition with our players working all together cohesively as a team.

The team shared the load, working together encouraging and protecting each other in a game of high pressure and hard contests.

The team with experienced and young players stuck to their guns as the Echuca team continually challenged them.

The team was led well by Matt Ivill, whose contested work and strong marking was very important to the team. Having JD Hayes back playing was a big plus as he was very good and got better as the game went on, hopefully he will soon be back playing senior footy for the club.

The midfield group lead by Craig Bamford and Hudson Ramsden were very hard at the contest and giving us much run.

Up forward Robbie Wilson and Ash Hobbs helped the forward group to work well together.

The young members of the team all contributed to the victory - especially Nick Asquith who finished with four goals, one from a courageous mark late in the last quarter.

The defense - led by Linc McKernan - were at various stages of the game under much pressure but they worked together to hold out the opposition and stop them hitting the scoreboard.

This was a very good win for the reserves team against the Echuca

Suffice to say the scoreboard was one-sided yet as stated the spirit of the contest was a pleasure to see well done again to our Euroa boys who keep fronting up week after week to pull on their club jumper and do their very best - we applaud your efforts fellas, thank you.

The game started with a highly contested brand of footy, with neither side being able to assert themselves on the game.

Some good pressure and constant resolve had our boys only trailing by a goal at quarter time. Coach Millsy was pleased with willingness to compete at every contest.

Scores Euroa 0-3-3 Echuca 1-3-9 The second quarter had both sides struggling with the wet and slippery conditions but an early goal to Ryan Hill bridged the gap.

Two late goals to the much bigger Echuca side saw them take a 13-point lead into halftime.

Scores Euroa 1-3-9 to Echuca 3-4-22 In the third quarter, Echuca kept us scoreless although only managing three goals themselves.

With conditions drying out our boys went hard at it.

The pressure and intensity never dropping.

Scores Euroa 1-4-10 to Echuca 6-945 The final quarter started on a high with Baxter Fraser goaling early.

Two late goals to Echuca saw them run out 35-point winners.

Junior netballers take on Seymour UNDER 15 NETBALL THE Under 15 Euroa Magpies played away against Seymour on Sunday.

With only four girls available to play, we were lucky to have Lily Asquith, Jade Raleigh, Issy Smyth, Zahara Johns and Avie Hill step up from the under 13s team to help make up the numbers for the girls to take to the court.

There were a few nerves before Euroa took to the court, which didn’t show after the first whistle with the Magpies coming out strongly in the first quarter, with Ella Hill & Lily Asquith accuracy in the goal ring setting the girls up for a lead of 5 goals at the end of the first quarter.

Euroa eight to Seymour three.

The second quarter seen the mid court, Caitlin Crowe, Maya Embling & Georgia Taresch stood up to the challenge creating great passages of play down the court working hard to feed the ball into the attacking end with Ella and Lily converting every opportunity on the scoreboard.

Jade and Issy worked well together in defense and were determined to make Seymour earn every goaling opportunity.

Further stretching Euroa’s lead at the end of the second quarter Euroa 17 to Seymour five.

Seymour came out strong in the third quarter and managed to outscore Euroa.

Avie & Jade defended strongly, with the midcourt working tirelessly to try and push the ball into the attacking end.

The girls worked hard to contest the ball and keep up a strong defense.

Euroa 20 to Seymour 10.

The girls continued to work hard in the final quarter, intercepting and challenging every play.

Ella & Zahara worked well in goals to extend Euroa’s lead.

The Magpies lead all game working hard as a team in a very physically contested game.

UNDER 11 NETBALL ON Sunday our Under 11 netball side travelled to Seymour for what as a great day weather wise.

As was netball for all grades.

With a full side and Evie Buchanan as captain Euroa started well with Sissy Davey and Charlotte Burden making every opportunity count in the goal ring.

Seymour delivered a solid quarter as well keeping our girls on their toes.

Audrey Anderson and Grace Burden started well in defence in the second quarter allowing good ball movement in the midcourt with Evie linking up well to deliver the netball to our goalers.

Once again it was a tight affair and a great game to watch leading into half time.

Ivy Burden stated the third quarter off in the centre and it didn’t take long for the netball to be converted into a goal.

Laylah Hamill in goal shooter had a great quarter adding two goals to Euroa’s goal sheet. Euroa defence was solid all quarter with Mable Tilton and Asha Embling rebounding the ball on a numerous occasions for our side to score.

The last quarter Euroa really digged in to outscore Seymour by three goals with Mia Holmes providing a target of goal shooter with a great team effort by all 10 girl.

Final score Seymour defeating Euroa 18-15.

Great to see the team having fun, developing and improving each week.

Euroa defeat ladder leaders in nail-biter GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE THE A Grade Euroa girls were able to welcome back Ellie Warnock following injury, a strong and valuable inclusion to their line up against the polished Echuca attack.

The Magpies started applying great pressure all over the court, with the attack transitioning the ball into goalers well and giving Euroa a good start.

It was an eight goal lead to finish the quarter.

During the second quarter, Echuca started throwing everything at Euroa.

Echuca’s defence end were not giving any space, but goalers Karly Wappett and Bree Poole were moving well and creating position.

Magpie mid court players Eliza Hoare and Kellie Davidson were, as usual, expertly feeding into the ring.

Ellie Warnock, Tylah Marchbank, Bridget Hill in defence were relentless with effort after effort, but Echuca’s accurate goaling saw them pull Euroa’s lead back to five goals by the end of the quarter.

At the start of the third term both teams were valuing every possession, giving very few opportunities for turnovers.

However, with some incredible individual efforts backed up by teammates, Euroa seemed to gain momentum.

Bree Poole showed great vision in finding opportunities time and time again to get the ball in for close goal options.

A couple of changes to the Echuca defence at the start of the final quarter gave a strong indication of their intent to fight to the bitter end.

This increased pressure initially gave Euroa some trouble, but the Magpies definitely did not hang their heads.

Sophie Owen came on in the last quarter to WD, getting several deflections and coming straight into the play almost immediately.

In a very tight tussle, the Euroa girls kept fighting and despite Echuca’s efforts the Euroa girls came off winners by two goals.

Euroa 51 Echuca 49 B GRADE THE Euroa B grade side had a tough day on the court against a well-oiled Echuca side on Saturday.

Echuca took a lead early in the first quarter that Euroa, despite a consistent team effort, was unable to chip back.

Echuca was able to continue to stretch their lead despite the likes of Katy Frewan in the defensive circle working hard.

Elisha Kubeil soldiered on

MAKE OR BREAK: Euroa A Grade’s accuracy in goals kept them ahead of Echuca in what was a tight fight to the finish.

Echuca 59 Euroa 27 B RESERVE THE Euroa B reserve girls started their match against Echuca on Saturday strongly, putting together a solid first half of netball.

Unfortunately it was not enough to defeat the dominant Echuca side, who went on to record a comfortable win.

Goalers Maddy Murray and Demi Walker worked the ball around the ring well, whilst the Magpie mid court players tried hard to bring the ball away from defence, transitioning down the court with strong leads and clever passing.

Euroa’s defenders comprising of Mary Frewen, Alita White and Cathryn Gray combined well in the ring together, working hard to minimise the Murray Bomber’s opportunities.

However, despite the best efforts of the Euroa team, it was another win to the rampaging Echuca side.

The first quarter saw Echuca start strongly, which was always expected.

Defenders Laura Frewen, Chloe Salter and Little Miss 50 Gamer Millie Watson were under the pump from the very first centre pass, but had developed quite a few new tricks for their repertoire since the last time these two teams had played.

The Magpie defence were able to provide a relentless pressure to the Echuca goalers.

It was just unfortunate that the towering Echuca goalers did not miss, ever.

Katy Frewen stepped up to take over the coaching reins this week, handling the new role and responsibilities with aplomb.

Katy was a calm presence on the side of the court, providing encouragement and advice to her young charges, and managing the necessary interchanges and positional moves with ease.

Hannah Kubeil, Meg Walker, Abby Harrison and Lily Meehan found themselves working overtime to try and find a clear path from defence to attack.

Side stepping taller opponents, the girls had to use a

variety of clever passes to circumnavigate the obvious height disadvantage.

Lily Meehan in particular had a wonderful game, playing both wing attack and wing defence positions during the game and playing them with great skill.

Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter have had of something a ‘purple patch’ of late, combining effortlessly in the goal ring and shooting very accurately over a number of weeks.

Saturday was no exception, with the Magpie goalers rewarding the efforts of the team on the scoreboard.

At the final whistle, it was Echuca who once again recorded the win.

However, whereas last time it had been by 51 goals, this time there was only a measly 41 goals the difference.

Definite improvement no matter how you look at it.

Echuca 69 Euroa 28 UNDER 15 IT was a cold start for U15 netball with the frosty conditions making for difficult play at times, however the girls warmed up quickly once the first whistle blew.

Euroa welcomed Natasha Reid back to the side after eight weeks away with an ankle injury.

The ball wasn’t in the Magpies’ goal area very much during the first term as Echuca dominated the match three - 14, despite the brilliant intercepts and rebound efforts of defenders Tess Walker and Lily Fowler.

Marni Salter in WA never gave up and was a true pocket rocket, weaving her way around Echuca’s defence and making some great plays in the mid court.

The girls found their groove for the second term working beautifully together

and stepping up with some great plays through the centre court by WD Scarlett Trotter and backed by Irish Anderson.

Natasha Reid and Ruby Watson scored three goals each for the quarter, due to quick thinking and beautifully fed passes by WA Isabella Smith into the goals.

Oakley Paul and Tess continued to work relentlessly in defence to keep Echuca at bay.

Echuca once again dominated the third term despite the desperate efforts of Scarlett, Lily and Oakley in defence.

Isabella and Natasha worked well together in the goals, extending their tally by six with the help of the midcourt girls Ruby, Marni & Scarlett.

Unfortunately Echuca extended their advantage by 16 for the term with scores 15-39.

The final term proved to be just as trying as the rest of the match, with five more hard fought goals added to our tally by Ruby and Isabella.

Marni was like the ‘energiser bunny’; she just kept going and playing well in the mid court.

Oakley and Irish backed up the Tess & Lily show in defence with brilliant intercepts and rebounds, working tirelessly to minimise the defeat.

The Magpie girls gave it their all for this match against Echuca who are very well placed on the U15 ladder.

Every single player did their part in contributing to Echuca not completely running away with the match, and should be proud of their efforts on Saturday.

Junior footballers put on a show EUROA JUNIOR FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB UNDER 13 FOOTBALL WELL, what a cracking day for football at Seymour.

The sun was shining, not a breath of wind, dry weather football at its best.

With Euroa first Vs Seymour second on the ladder, it shaped up as a tough day for both teams.

With the team changed around by coach Saxon, the game was underway at a frantic pace.

Ollie Wilson was in everything early.

His determination and elusive skills were on display.

It was a real arm wrestle early but late in the term Euroa started to pepper the goals, only minor scores but they were in front.

Leila and Ben Creevey controlled the backline.

Addie was working hard all over the ground and Sam Holden was on top in the ruck.

Seymour kicked a goal in the dying seconds to take a slender lead.

Second quarter: The start of the second quarter was the same as the first, no team wanting to give an inch.

Ollie Swain was starting to dominate around half forward.

There were great passages of ruckwork to the on ballers, with Ethan Saxon Ollie Wilson and Sam Mills really taking control.

Ethan had Euroa on the board with some great follow up work.

Doug Kipping was tackling hard to keep the ball in Euroa’s 50metre mark.

This paid off to another brilliant snap by Ethan Saxon and Euroa were away.

They fought really hard all quarter and took a second goal lead into half time.

Third quarter: The first 10 minutes was like a grand finale, no giving in anywhere.

Seymour drew first blood with a goal and the game was on.

Coby Mann played his best quarter all year and was in just about every play up forward. Smashing into packs and extracting the ball to push forward at all costs.

Shayna, Kody Ross, and Max were working hard together and Euroa kicked clear again.

Tackling pressure and Euroa relentless determination was outstanding .

Fourth quarter: From here Euroa took ascendancy, Haimi got Euroa on the board at the start of the last quarter.

Ollie Swain had worked hard all day providing many opportunities for his team mates.

His hard work paid off with another great goal.

Seymour hit back late, but when Addie marked after some great ruckwork from Venders, Euroa scored the last goal.

Euroa home by 20 points, Euroa 49 Seymour 29.

Thanks to all our helpers on the day.

We have four home games to finish the season.

If we could get some more helpers in and around the canteen, this will set us up financially going into next season.

We are, after all doing this all for the smiling faces of young children.

One hour in the canteen or goal umpiring helps ease the burden on the same people week in week out.

Come and try squash sessions open in Benalla THE second half of Benalla’s squash year has started up again with the first night of free Come & Try squash having been held on Monday night and the second this Wednesday at 6:30.

Don’t worry if you miss these because there is another two free nights next week.

These are also on Monday, July 18 and Wednesday, July 20 evenings with a 6:30 start.

Come along and have a go at the great game of squash.

The Spring Season of the Benalla Squash Club competition will commence the following week.

Benalla junior squash members were treated to a rare coaching session with Raj Nanda on Friday 24th June. Coaching was aimed at developing stroke play and Raj brought with him Kumail and Haider Naqvi to assist with the training.

Kumail (16yrs) and Haider (15yrs) are both exceptional squash players

on the junior circuit, competing for spots on the Victorian Junior squad team with goals to represent Australia in the near future.

Friday night was also presentation night for Benalla juniors and Raj kindly assisted with the trophy presentation, encouraging juniors to be the best squash players they can be.

Saturday 25th June Raj Nanda held a coaching day at the Wodonga Squash club inviting juniors of all standards to participate and focus on improving their skills.

This was well attended by players from as far away as Melbourne and into NSW, Tyler Vaughan and Alex Briggs from Benalla worked tirelessly on their footwork and serving, when they were not mingling with the other players.

There were juniors who had never played squash before as well as Kumail and Haider Naqvi, Patrick O’Shannessy, Ameilia Brigden and

other high ranking Victorian and NSW Juniors in attendance, proving you’re never too good to practice or train.

On Sunday, June 16 Wodonga Squash club hosted a combined Silver/Bronze squash tournament, Benalla was well represented with five players competing, Angus Woodward was promoted into a higher grade to provide him with more challenging games and Angus showed what he is made of by winning his last match in five games, a great way to finish out the tournament.

Congratulations to all the Benalla juniors who attended these squash events over the weekend, it is clear that you are all improving your skills and very keen to continue playing squash.

The next Junior Bronze tournament is 17th July in Wagga Wagga, with the Victorian Junior Championships on 23rd & 24th July at Albert Park.

Violet Town fight well against Lancaster KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN A GRADE VIOLET TOWN needed to start the game strongly, and it wasn’t the most ideal start with Lancaster getting an earlier lead, but the Towners were able to work hard and get back to only one down at quarter time.

Some slight changes were made, which saw a new shooting combination that took a little while to get used to, but halfway through the second quarter the Towners started to convert their opportunities into goals.

Defence fought hard, but accurate shooting made it hard for them to get turnovers.

It continued to be a close contest with both sides up for the challenge.

Violet Town still were not playing to their potential and finally in the third quarter the Towners lifted,

coming up with turnovers and being able to work the ball down and converting them into goals.

With the defensive pressure down the court Violet Town were able to take the lead with a strong third quarter.

Violet Town continued to push forward with their lead in the final quarter and finish off the game strongly.

B GRADE THE Violet Town B Grade started off strong, putting up a hard fight against Lancaster.

Teagan and Meg worked hard in the goal to ring, while Steph and Kat in defence continued to work hard all game but Lancaster were slightly more accurate not giving the

Towners many opportunities. Overall, the Towners worked extremely well as a team and didn’t give up until the final whistle.

Unfortunately, Lancaster was just too strong for the Towners and were able to go away with the win.

C GRADE VIOLET TOWN started the game strongly with lots of intensity and defensive pressure, creating many intercepts but unfortunately VT were unable to convert their opportunities into goals.

In the second quarter Lancaster put the pressure on VT, causing the Towners to make many forced errors which allowed Lancaster to take control of the game.

Violet Town came out in the first five minutes of the second half with real purposed and intensity, but then Lancaster settled and made advantage of the Towners errors.

The damage had been done and Violet Town didn’t finish off the game well, with flat leads and everyone crowding.

Lots to reflect on from this game so the team can finish of the season well.

13 & UNDER VIOLET TOWN started the game well with Lancaster helping the team by

providing two players.

It was an evenly match contest all game and the Violet Town players were playing really well as a team.

Abi and Sophie continued to rotate and work the goal ring well, while Matilda was always an option in attack, feeding the ball into the shooters well.

Issy in GK never gave up all game, always putting the pressure on the Lancaster shooters and coming up with lots of deflections and intercepts.

Unfortunately, Violet Town didn’t get the result that they were after, but everyone should be extremely proud of their efforts and how they represented themselves and the club.

Violet Town begins its bid for glory outside top four KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS

In a finals like atmosphere the two sides threw everything at each other, the Towners twice grabbed the lead but a late goal to the Wombats saw them victors by just five points.

Both sides will play finals, the upside for Violet Town is over the next few weeks it will get back Josh Mellington and Fintan Brazil alongside Harry Sleigh a late exclusion

LANCASTER welcomed the Towners to a Sunday game in beautiful conditions, the battle between two sides desperate to win and surge to a potential top four finish.

The visitors made the first move kicking four goals to one to stamp the game their way, Jack Exell a class above had nabbed two by quarter time.

Over the next two quarters the home side took control

from Sunday’s side.

The “Raging Bull” Ollie Ford left nothing out there and was clearly the best from both sides, 26 touches, an incredible 14 contested possessions he stood above the lot, of course Jack Exell who never plays a bad game kicked five despite a three on one contest always, he can’t wait to have his mate back.

Euroa bested by an undefeated Echuca side GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS SATURDAY, July 9 saw the Euroa Magpies host the top of the ladder and undefeated Echuca Bombers at Memorial Oval.

A huge crowd was in attendance in anticipation of a high-class clash and to that end these two teams did not disappoint.

A glorious sunny winter afternoon allowed the free-flowing Echuca outfit to burst from the blocks, slotting five first quarter goals to Euroa’s one.

From here the next two quarters were an even contest with both sides going ferociously hard at the ball, not wanting to give either an inch.

Adam Giobbi was taking mark after mark in the backline, repelling many Echuca attacking moves. ] The midfield brigade (albeit without injured stars Jayden and Jacob Gleeson) were producing excellent contests - Andrew Smith was sublime in the ruck as was Jack Hellier, Andrew Bell and Ben Giobbi throughout

the middle. Livewire Jett Trotter - who also began the game in the middle was again electric up forward bagging a couple of goals himself and setting up many opportunities throughout the match.

Unfortunately the domination of Echuca wore the home side down with a six-goal to nil last quarter blowing the scoreboard end result out considerably.

Coach Rowan and his team dissected the loss after the match in the knowledge that sometimes when things don’t go to plan it allows areas of improvement to be identified and worked on.

This team will no doubt do this as they have a split-round bye for July 15 followed by another home clash on July 23 against the Shepparton Swans.

Fitzgerald takes out Don Barns Memorial

HIGH SCORER: Jett Trotter kicked a team high of two goals for the match against Echuca.

PERFECT weather greeted the large number of competitors who entered the Don Barns Memorial Point Scorer Championship held at the Euroa Clay Target Club on Sunday, July 10.

Don was a long time member of Euroa and many of today’s competitors spoke of enjoying his company at the various North East Clubs.

With wonderful support from Don’s family that, not only included sponsorship of the Championship sashes, but also a great spread of very tasty refreshments so no one went hungry.

Also helping to celebrate the day, the Rochester bakery supplied pies at a much reduced cost.

The Championship itself was won by Colbinabbin’s Lee Fitzgerald who scored 147/150 just edging out Corowa Clay Target Club President, Royce Wojtowyez on 146/150.

Royce then went on to shoot 25/25 in the Continental event which coupled with the sweepstake event score, won the Overall Highgun for the day on 199/205.
