It seemed appropriate that Prime Minister Scott Morrison chose the day of the Melbourne Grand Prix to visit the governor-general and request a May 21 federal election.

Like the grand prix, we have been through a lengthy qualifying period with various parties doing their best to test out policies and statements to ensure their campaign machines are firing on all cylinders.

(Liberal Democrats) who have all declared their intention to contest Indi.

At the 2019 election there were seven candidates; One Nation did not contest it, while Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party have yet to nominate a candidate this time around.

The Liberals’ Steven Martin won the first preference with 35.09 per cent of the votes just ahead of Helen Haines in her first election on 32.35 per cent but after preferences were

distributed Dr Haines was declared the winner with 51.39 per cent ahead of Mr Martin on 48.61 per cent.

Nationally, if the LiberalNational coalition can retain a net 76 seats it can retain power.

A net loss of just one seat (requiring a swing of less than half a per cent) puts it into minority and will require negotiations with the crossbench for minority government.

It needs 76 seats for a majority, a net gain of seven.

But if the Liberal-National coalition loses four seats to Labor, the opposition will hold 73 seats to 72 coalition and will also be able to negotiate with the crossbench on forming a minority government as it did in 2010.

Men to benefit from $300k donation New ultrasound,, biopsy p y equipment q p for p patients needing gp prostate cancer diagnosis, g , treatment

By STEVE KELLY MEN in North East Victoria will be able to access quicker and safer prostate cancer treatment following a $300,000 grant from the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) will use the money to purchase a stateof-the-art ultrasound machine and other specialist biopsy equipment currently only available locally in Wodonga.

This will not only slash wait times, but also allow men in the district to have the procedure done close to their home and support networks.

Trust Fund board member Bryan Blake said the charity was proud to be able to support cancer services in the North East, and thanked a Rutherglen couple who made a significant donation towards the equipment.

“The donation from the Horne Family Trust has probably started something off to take us into a new era in our local area of philanthropic donations,” he said.

“We thank them for their incredible donation, as well as everyone who has supported our local charity in

Urologist Mark Forbes welcomed the funding with the new transperineal unit set to improve the accuracy of biopsies, and allow the region to deliver radiation therapy in a new way to reduce the infection risk to patients.

He said the equipment used in these biopsies has

been available for 4-5 years, but about 250 patients a year have had to travel to Wodonga or Melbourne to access diagnosis and treatment.

“I will now be able to get more men through more quickly and it will reduce the waiting list and anxiety around the wait for the procedure and it will certainly help in our fight against the

scourge of prostate cancer,” Dr Forbes said.

“The catchment area for Northeast Health is quite large and I see guys down to Mansfield or beyond, across the Alpine region, and south as far as Euroa.”

Dr Forbes said about five people in the region a week require a biopsy and there are other treatments avail-

able using this equipment including helping reduce morbidity such as radiotherapy.

He said transperineal biopsies through the skin avoid infection risk completely and in addition, combined with MRI, allow targeting of lesions resulting in a significantly improved diagnosis rate.

“Obtaining a transperineal biopsy unit in Wangaratta will allow these men much more timely access to this important technology, significantly speeding up the diagnosis and reducing anxiety around wait times for it,” he said.

NHW acting chief executive, Robyn Gillis, said the equipment would expand services at the hospital.

“This would include the possible expansion of gynaecology and colorectal services, and the potential for Barrigel insertion, which helps protect prostate cancer patients from the side effects of radiotherapy,” she said.

“A transperineal biopsy kit in Wangaratta would allow us to schedule biopsies weekly as required rather than wait for the urologists’ once-monthly list in Wodonga,” she said.

“We thank the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund, which also funds an outreach counselling service for cancer patients at our health service.”

Ms Gillis said it was highly critical equipment and the hospital didn’t have the funds, so they thank the trust and the donor for all they have given to provide the funding.

One Nation joins Indi election

By STEVE KELLY ONE Nation candidate and mother of four Beth Stevens is the latest to join the Indi election.

Ms Stevens moved to Benalla six years ago after growing up in Cranbourne and she is actively involved in running Auskick for kids and at the moment is a full-time mum but has worked in retail, aged care, customer services and employment consultancy.

She joined Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party as a candidate as she feels that a lot of her perspectives align with what One Nation stands for and she wants to protect the rights and freedoms of all Australians.

“I believe that since I was in high school and we learned about Pauline, she hasn’t changed and she’s always been for the people and this is why I joined up,” Ms Stevens said.

“I have looked into her policies and her values are aligned close to mine and her policies are bang as to what we do need to keep the country and our electorate moving forward.”

“With the refugees policy, One Nation favours Australians first and foremost and we do not support unlimited numbers of refugees from Afghanistan as announced by the government,” Ms Stevens said.

“We support taking a sustainable number of genuine refugees that Australia can support and we believe in reducing the refugee intake for

five years in an effort to redirect critical funding to Australian services.”

Ms Stevens said a government report reveals that the cost to hold each asylum seeker on Nauru has escalated to $358,646 per month or $4.3 million per year.

“One Nation supports the withdrawal of Australia from the outdated United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention,” she said.

Ms Stevens said she is passionate about fixing the legacy of problems within the current regional Victorian health system.

“I support One Nation’s policy which recognises that our health system was beyond capacity prior to COVID-19 and particularly inadequate in regional parts of Australia,” she said.

“Increasing the number of regional doctors, nurses, and other critical health professionals is vital.

“It makes sense that One Nation will introduce three-year contracts for newly qualified medical professionals and in return pay their HECS-HELP loans in full.”

She said farmers are the mainstay of regional towns and the backbone of our great nation.

“If elected, I will take a firm stand to ensure that much of the red and green tape is cut to enable farmers the right to care for and farm their own land,” she said.

COMMUNITY members are set to play an important role in what Victoria Police have labeled a ‘back to basics’ approach to minimising local crime.

Announced this month, Victoria Police’s Neighbourhood Policing model will expand statewide, following a successful rollout in eight localities last year.

In doing so, police will establish a community issues register, which will see officers tasked to specifically address concerns held by the community and report back to residents with an

outcome.

They will also establish links with local councils, community groups and government agencies to tackle more complex issues.

As part of a commitment to strengthening the relationship between police and the local community, residents can submit their thoughts and recommendations through a community sentiment survey, which will inform future policing practice.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said it was time to reconnect with lo-

cals following a difficult two year period.

“Our new back-to-basics approach is about making sure we’re listening to the community and tackling the issues they care about,” he said.

“Delivering on this commitment not only means we can get on top of issues before they become more serious, but make people feel safe to go about their everyday business.”

As of yet, there are no candidates confirmed for Labor or The Greens in Nicholls.

Officer to fight driving charges A HIGHWAY Patrol officer who travelled at more than 200kph along the Hume Freeway near Euroa will face charges at the County Court for his actions.

A 16-year-old veteran of the police force, the Leading Senior Constable appeared via WebeX at Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday, when he was alleged to have engaged in conduct endangering life when responding to a crash

involving another officer in March last year.

As the holder of a gold licence, the highest tier available to Victoria Police members and which permits the holder to travel at unrestricted speeds for police matters, the accused’s lawyer, James Anderson, said the dangerous driving charges were “extraordinary”.

AV upgrade for Avenel hall THE Avenel Memorial hall has received a $16,000 audiovisual system to increase the facility’s multi-use capacity for community and commercial events.

Some $14,300 of the upgrade has been paid for by the Strathbogie Shire Council while the remaining $1778 was funded by Avenel Active.

The hall now has a 3.5m x 1.9m (160 inch) motorised projector screen for PowerPoint presentations and films.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said the modern technology would create exciting potential for a variety of events, all of which would have flow-on benefits for the community.

“The new audio-visual system will support community groups with the right equipment for meetings and other events of interest, such as entertainment and conferences,” Cr Binks said.

“We are proud to support the hall committee and Avenel Active in their vision to boost the hall’s capacity for community members

and attract new events with social and economic benefits for the area.”

Avenel Active member Jeff Moran worked with the Avenel Memorial Hall committee on the successful Pitch My Project submission to council for the audio-visual system before the 2021-22 Draft Budget.

“The hall has many spaces suitable for meetings of various sizes and a kitchen suitable for catering and conferences, so the digital projector and screen has made this beautiful old hall more multi-purpose,” Mr Moran said.

“There is now capacity for conferences, film nights and attracting professional performances.

“The hall is also a heat refuge for extended power outages because it has a solar panels and battery; the inclusion of the digital projector means people can watch movies and stay cool while waiting for their power to come back on.”

FREE songwriting workshops are being organised by the Strathbogie Shire Council during May. These seminars will be taught by acclaimed folk music singer Lucy Wise.

The council’s arts and culture officer, Kobe Pallis, said the three-hour Shared Sky Songwriting Workshop − hosted in the east and west of the shire in May − was designed to connect all ages and levels of creative experience.

“The workshop is an introduction to the art of songwriting for curious minds, and an opportunity to enhance community connection across the Shire,” Ms Pallis said.

“Lucy will share insights into the songwriting process, how to develop ideas from seed to song, and maintain a sense of flow through the process.”

Ms Pallis invited residents to book an afternoon workshop at Nagambie Lakes Community House on Saturday, May 28 or a morning session at Moglonemby Memorial Hall on Sunday, May 29.

“As a collaborative, group participants will draw inspiration from Strathbogie Shire environment, cultures and relationships for exploring song-

writing themes and structures,” Ms Pallis said.

Ms Wise is a central-Victorian based singer-songwriter who has toured nationally and internationally.

She was nominated at the 2021 Music Awards for Best Folk Act and is renowned at music festivals for warm and heartfelt lyrics and melodies, telling stories of love, healing, and

relationships with the environment.

Ms Pallis said the sentiment and community feedback at the two Strathbogie Shire workshops will inspire the future creation of “a community folk anthem of sorts”.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said the Shared Sky project was created based on community consultations

which set objectives for Council’s Arts and Culture Strategy.

“We are excited to invite people from all postcodes in our Shire to be part of The Shared Sky project, which launches in May with these social and creative workshops led by talented singer-songwriter Lucy Wise,” Cr Binks said.

“The Shared Sky workshops - and any future event in this project - aims to connect people of all ages across the Shire, encourage collaboration, sharing and developing skills, and support our facilities with arts and culture activities and events.”

“People across Indi are facing ongoing cost of living pressures like rising rents and housing costs, petrol prices and childcare fees.

“Short term measures won’t make up for years of cutbacks and low wages, overseen by this Morrison Government.

“They’ve been asleep at the wheel while real problems pileup.”

Ms David suggested that Labor can provide a more effective solution when responding to Anthony Albanese’s Budget Reply speech.

“I’m confident that we have a positive alternative to take to the people of Indi and across the country, the opportunity to vote for a real change and a government that cares,” she said.

“Mr Albanese set out a vision for a hard-working, responsible government that will address the challenges people face.

Childcare is one area that Ms David believes a Labor government can improve.

“We think supporting workers and caring for the youngest in our community is essential for a better future,” she said.

“Take childcare, it’s essential but increasingly unaffordable for so many families.

“Our policy will lift the cap on childcare subsidies and deliver cheaper childcare for all families.”

In addition to childcare, Ms David recognised that aged care still requires significant attention.

“All of us can see the need to fix the crisis in Aged Care shown by the Royal Commission,” she said.

“Labor is stepping forward with a practical plan to achieve that.

“We’ll mandate a registered nurse on site in every aged care home 24 hours a day.

“We’ll require a minimum 215 minutes of staff care per resident each day.

“This is practical, and it’s going to fundamentally and quickly improve the care of our elderly people.

“Workers in Aged Care give their all to care for residents but they need our support with better pay and conditions.

“Labor will support higher wages for Aged Care staff in a FairWork case, and fully fund any increase.

“These plans will make a difference to so many people across Indi and wider Australia.

“People are telling me they’re sick of the general incompetence and do-nothing attitude of the current Government.

“They’re ready for a change and this election is our chance to fix things.”

Euroa Show and Shine drives ahead

FOLLOWING the easing of COVID-19 related restrictions, the Australian National Show and Shine - Euroa now sees a much less complex path forward in running its first event in three years.

Step one is already in progress, and included the submission of supporting documents for an event application to the Strathbogie Shire Council, who now require applications for events such the Euroa Show and Shine to be lodged at least six months in advance of the proposed event date.

Committee members are also busy confirming sponsors for the October show.

Many of the major sponsors

have already committed to this year following last year’s cancellation.

This should be completed no later than the end of May, and will then enable maximum exposure for these supporting organisations via a series of media outlets, posters and flyers.

An early batch of thousands of DL sized flyers has been printed, utilising those sponsors who had committed to the 2021 event, and will be used at upcoming car shows throughout the area to attract entrants and spectators.

These will also be employed as counter-top flyers for our various sponsors.

The theme for 2022 will be

the “1920s” - something that has been on the program for the past two years, before the cancellation of previous events.

There will be trophies for the best 1920s car and best 1920s motorcycle.

Of course, the “Fashions in the Park” with sponsored prizes for the best 1920s costumes for both male and female entrants will still remain.

A METROPOLITAN Labor MP has said that country drivers complaining about the condition of regional roads are living in ‘imagined fantasies’ according to Euroa MP Steph Ryan.

The comments were made during parliamentary debate by eastern metropolitan Labor MP Vicki Ward.

Shadow Minister for Roads Steph Ryan said the comments reflected the city-first mentality of the Melbourne Labor Government.

“Labor MPs clearly don’t spend a lot of time beyond Melbourne’s tram tracks if they think crumbling road shoulders, dangerously rough surfaces and yawning potholes are the height of safety,” Ms Ryan said.

“Everywhere I travel across Victoria, but particularly in regional Victoria, our road surfaces are crumbling, they are deteriorating.

“Road safety and bandaid fixes, like lowering the speed limit to 80km/h, should not be used as a smoke screen to hide the problems that have been created by Labor’s chronic underinvestment

in our road network.

“Since 2014, we know that Labor has lost more than $24 billion to waste and cost overruns on major projects, including on road projects like the North East Link and the West Gate Tunnel - this money would be better spent on safer roads.”

According to Ms Ryan, Labor cut 25 per cent from road asset maintenance in last year’s State Budget, decreasing the budget from $807 million in 2021 down to $616 million.

Ms Ryan said the push to drop the road toll to zero and initiatives to drive to arrive must be backed by proper investment in safer roads.

“While it seems there’s no end of money when it comes to plugging Labor’s multi-billiondollar metro project cost over-runs, country roads are crumbling,” Ms Ryan said.

“Only a change in government will shift the focus to making sure that our roads are up to scratch, that potholes are repaired properly and that road surfaces are safe - no matter where you live.”

Maxwell lauds stalking report NINE key recommendations will help to shape the state’s approach to identifying, understanding, and protecting the victims of stalking behaviour throughout Australia.

An interim report lodged as part of the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s (VLRC) inquiry into stalking follows the launch of a pilot program at select police stations in eastern Victoria, which will see a single trained police officer oversee stalking allegations through to their completion.

The overarching review of legislation was launched in by the VLRC 2021 after Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell presented an 8000 signature petition to parliament calling for urgent government action to enforce intervention orders and pursue allegations of stalking.

Ms Maxwell said the most recent report unveiled the pressure victims felt, and the risks they were forced to take, to secure an intervention order from court - with many experiencing stalking outside of traditional family or intimate partner relationships.

“While there are some overlaps, the dynamics of stalking outside a family context are different and we need specialised ways to target this insidious crime,” she said.

“Victim survivors need support from the time when

Of the 36 recommendations made by Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (DHJP) to the VLRC,

key recommedations such as a need for new risk assessment framework, training for police and court officials and information sharing were present in the recent interim report.

Victoria Police announced early last week that both Prahan and Morwell police stations would trial screening harassment for stalking and harassment (SASH) technology in 2022 to identify unreported stalking behaviours and intervene before a criminal incident occurs.

The move promised to be a positive step towards proactive policing, according to Ms Maxwell.

“The report suggested that police response, which are usually incident-based, may not be suitable for stalking,” she said.

“Like coercive control, stalking involves course-of-conduct offending, which means the same offence committed time and again.

“Many people don’t report stalking until it’s been going on for some time, worried they are over-reacting or won’t be believed.

“When stalking is not recognised by police, at court, or by Corrections (Corrections Victoria), we miss the opportunity to provide victim support and specialist assessment or treatment for offenders.”

The final report is due to be tabled in June.

Currently there are 40,000 photos and documents on the museum’s server.

Historical, genealogical records and resources held by the society include local histories, family histories, birth, marriage and death records, cemetery records and war records and information.

Local school records, district maps and local shire water and rate books have all been scanned.

In addition, there are a variety of local history books that have been written and printed over the years including shire history, many sporting groups, local churches and the many associations and organisations that have functioned in the district over the years.

By GUS RIDDER ACCORDING to Regional Communications Minister, Senator Bridget McKenzie, Labor has to come clean to regional Australia about whether it will cut $155 million from regional telecommunications if elected.

The election pledge of Labor to deliver a $656 million regional communications package appears to reflect a significant decrease in communications spending for regional Australia.

“This appears to be a serious backward step by Labor and if confirmed, will actually deliver worse outcomes for the people Anthony Albanese is claiming to assist,” Senator McKenzie said.

“Where exactly is Labor planning to cut regional communications spending?

“Is it fewer blackspot towers?

“Is it abandoning plans to improve resilience against natural disasters?

“Or is it cutting support for indigenous communities?

THE Euroa Third Age Club welcomed back its exercise classes for seniors on Wednesday, April 6.

Funds raised with winter fashion A BLUME’S Winter Fashion Fundraiser was recently held by the St Vincent de Paul Society, Euroa Conference to raise money for Flood Relief Appeals in New South Wales and Queensland.

Ian South, president of St Vincent de Paul Society, Euroa Conference, was happy with the event.

“Thanks everyone for coming,” he said.

There was a small entrance fee, lucky door prize and a raffle.

The amount raised on the day was $323.

The government, through its $1.3 billion investment in response to the 2021 Regional Telecommunications Review, stated they have committed to new communications investments in regional, rural, remote and peri-urban communities to ensure they can take advantage of the digital economy.

“As announced in the Budget the Government will deliver a new $811.8 million Connecting Regional Australia Initiative to expand mobile coverage and improve connectivity, resilience and affordability in regional, rural and peri-urban Australia,” Senator McKenzie said.

The Federal Government has also announced a proposed $750 million upgrade to the NBN network, bringing the Liberal and Nationals Government’s planned investment in regional communications up to $1.3 billion.

Jungwirth elected Probus president

Shire footpaths upgraded ALMOST 3.5km of residential and recreational footpaths have been built by the Strathbogie Shire Council in the first nine months of the 2021-22 financial year.

Mayor Laura Binks said more than $267,000 had gone towards new concrete and gravel pathways that will increase pedestrian safety and access for four townships.

“We’ve built more than 1.4km of new concrete footpaths in Nagambie, Violet Town and Euroa, including works in residential streets and at two primary school crossings,” Cr Binks said.

“There is more than 2km of new gravel pathways at two sites in Avenel.”

Cr Binks said the new concrete pathways and school crossing upgrades had increased access and safety for pedestrians in residential ar-

eas and school zones, while walking tracks in Avenel now have recreational upgrades.

“Two residential streets in Nagambie and Violet Town have new footpaths, along with upgrades at school crossing zones at Nagambie Catholic Primary School and Euroa St John’s Primary School,” she said.

“Two sites for gravel walking tracks in Avenel were identified to improve safety for users, close any gaps to existing infrastructure and maintain a usable level of service - all with the intention to enhance recreational use in communities and appeal to visitors.”

The pathway works so far completed in the 2021-22 Council budget include: Nagambie: concrete footpaths Barwon St to High St,

Nagambie (195m).

Murray St to Goulburn St, Nagambie (204m).

Total cost $48,291.

Violet Town: concrete footpaths Hyacinth St to Tulip St (430m).

Hyacinth St to Lily St (426m, including removal and replacement of existing 420m).

Total cost $84,364.

School crossings St Joseph’s Primary School, High St, Nagambie (75m, new footpath).

St John’s Primary School, Anderson St, Euroa (80m, crossing realignment).

Total cost $21,890.

Gravel footpaths Queen St to Pinneger St and Ewings Rd, Avenel (450m).

Anderson St to Ash St, Avenel (1.7km).

DURING their annual general meeting in March, the Euroa Probus Club elected their 2022 committee.

The newly elected committee of management includes: President Fred Jungwirth, vice president Faith Irving, secretary Stan Reid, treasurer Bernie Walker and committee members, Ellen Doyle, Eric Harrison, Sue Marr and Margaret Walker.

As there was no guest speaker at the event, the Probus club tried something different, which resulted in a lot of laughter.

Probus members each brought a wrapped mystery item to the event.

Members would then identify the owner and the significance of each item.

Winners of vouchers were Bernie Walker, Phyllis Dean and Ellen Doyle.

The next Probus meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 26.

Alexandra district pony club camps in Ruffy THE Alexandra District Horse and Pony Club held their annual camp over a jam-packed weekend beginning on Saturday, April 2.

This year the club held their camp at the wonderful Ruffy Recreation Reserve.

The amazing facilities ensured that all the horse activities would be well catered for.

The Ruffy Recreation Reserve committee generously held a working bee the weekend prior to the arrival of the Pony Club, ensuring the venue was in fantastic condition.

This camp was the first rally for many of those who attended.

On Saturday, members competed in a Le Trec style event.

This involved riders working in teams and completing in three events, with the best three scores from each team being calculated for the final placings.

The first event was the obstacle course, where riders had to manoeuvre their horses through a range of challenges.

The second event was the controlled gait, which has the slowest canter or trot and the fastest walk over a 150m laneway.

For the final event, teams par-

ticipated in the horseback orienteering course around the nearby farmland.

Congratulations to team ‘Tobs’ who took out first place, led by Captain Lilly Bossonnet, Louis Hill, Annabell Hill and Ted Kelly.

Saturday evening’s activities involved a large meal prepared by Harvesting the Feast from Alexandra, as well as extra goodies donated by Packsaddling Australia in Narbethong.

There was time for members to make their own Easter egg baskets in preparation for Sunday’s Easter egg hunt.

Marshmallows around the campfire were a hit with all the kids, big and small.

After a wonderful evening of camping, a breakfast of bacon and egg rolls was served up as the sun appeared through the clouds.

Riders then journeyed on a two hour trail ride down tree lined country lanes, blue gum forests and native bushlands.

Parent riders and junior members enjoyed the scenery and the wildlife along the way.

Before a final clean-up of the venue, a delicious barbecue lunch

and Easter egg hunt was enjoyed by all.

For the May rally on Sunday, May 1, the club will return to their home ground in Alexandra.

Improvements needed for rural doctors THE Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) is hoping for more significant announcements after a small range of measures for the rural medical sector were confirmed in the federal budget.

RDAA President Dr Megan Belot explained that there is still a lot more that can be done for the medical industry in rural areas.

“We have again only seen an entrée of measures for the rural medical sector in this budget, but there is a glimmer of hope that the main course may be in the oven,” she said.

“We expected a tight budget this year.

“We now need to see the government deliver on real investment for the rural medical sector - and the Labor Party to show us what it can offer - as we go to the election.

“Now is the opportunity for the major parties to step up and finally put the main meal for the rural medical sector, and rural Australians, on the table.”

The RDAA stated that there were encouraging signs in some of the funding and projects outlined in the

“The government needs to recognise that only funding medical school places will not deliver doctors to rural Australia - medical school is only the start of a doctor’s training journey.”

Lotto harder to win ACCORDING to the Nationals, The State Labor Government has made the lotto harder to win in an attempt to earn extra money.

Recent moves to increase the government’s tax cut from OzLotto by adding extra numbers to the draw have reduced an individual’s chance of winning from one chance in 47 million to one chance in 63 million.

Shadow Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation Steph Ryan said State Labor was out of cash and exploiting everyday Australians.

“The State Labor Government is swimming in debt and raiding the pockets of people chasing the Australian dream of winning the lotto by making it harder to win,” Ms Ryan said.

“Adding numbers means people are less likely to win division one, leading to bigger jackpots.

“Bigger jackpots mean more ticket sales and in turn more tax.

“State Labor is addicted to taxing its way out of the generational debt bill its mismanaged major projects and wasteful spending have pushed on Victorians.”

Three years ago, the government was collecting $440 million from lotto taxes (2017-18 year). Last year the revenue from public lotteries was $615.4 million (2020-21).

This is an increase of $175.4 million.

Ms Ryan said with many gaming venues closed over COVID, more Victorians had turned to the lotto which also meant the government would rake in more in tax revenue.

“Who doesn’t dream of wining the lotto to buy a house or pay off their mortgage, but by putting in these extra numbers, State Labor’s crushed Victorians’ dreams,” Ms Ryan said.

“The Andrews Government can’t manage major projects, leaving yawning black holes in the budget that it’s desperate to plug at any cost to Victorian taxpayers.

“Only a change in government in November will end Labor’s wasteful spending so we can spend more on our local hospitals, schools, roads and emergency services.”

Nagambie supports 2022 Good Friday Appeal

By DIANE GRANT COVID-19 has affected the annual Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Good Friday appeal in a major way over the past two years especially in rural areas such as Nagambie.

Collectors have not been able to collect donations from around the local town and surrounds to raise funds for this annual major event.

So, in 2022 Nagambie RCH Good Friday Appeal volunteer co-ordinator Pat Moroney and her support team of volunteers organised a dinner at the Royal Mail Hotel to which 120 guests attended to show their ongoing support to this worthwhile cause.

Before dinner, the Nagambie Lakeside Larks choir and the Ukelele group entertained the audience with their popular songs and music, then during dinner local singers John Smith, Kevin Phelan and Angie Black sang some old 1950-1960 tunes that the crowd happily sang along too.

Quite a few local groups and some sponsors made up tables to support the evening and it was apparent the guests enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the community event after being in lockdown mode for so long.

It is the first time the small committee has conducted an evening fundraiser and they were grateful that the patrons dug deep into their wallets and generously donated towards the auction items and the raffle to raise a tidy sum for the appeal.

Donations by the various local sponsors were acknowledged on the night and they were thanked along with the dinner guests for their heartfelt generosity for the

Workshops recognise the value in succession planning THE rising price of agriculture land has made succession planning more important than ever, and for some families, this issue is more complex.

Agriculture business consultant Paul Blackshaw said the rise in farm values has increased interest in the family farm, and in some cases from family members who once weren’t interested in the business but now see the increasing value in farm assets.

“Dividing the farm so that everyone gets what they need is becoming increasingly challenging,” Mr Blackshaw, from Meridian Agriculture said.

“Even when families have planned well and invested offfarm or in shares to provide for non-farming members of the family, these assets haven’t increased in value as much as the farm.”

Longwood Lookout Hello all.

The Longwood Action Group as you may have heard, have been very busy of late with some plans to have the heritage railway water tower returned to Longwood.

It is currently at a private property in Locksley and the owners are more than happy to donate the structure back to the community.

The action group have been successful with some grants from the shire to start the process and as we now have a letter of support from the shire and completed some research, we will hopefully have a flyer and a poster soon at the shop and pub with some information about this project.

We hope that it will be the commencement of our art trail and be a great attraction for visitors to the town.

The tower will be refurbished structurally and in collaboration with local artists become an artistically visual piece.

Longwood Primary school students have been invited to participate in the Longwood Anzac Day service march.

More details as to time and where we are to assemble will be sent out once they are known.

Students participating are asked to wear school uniform.

Help us collect bread bags and soft plastics in exchange for points we can redeem on new sports equipment.

All registered schools go in the draw to win an exercise circuit made from the recycled plastic we all collect!

Note that any bread bags or bags that have contained bread (rolls, hot cross buns, wraps etc) can be placed in the box at school, it’s not just Wonder bread bags.

More farmers to be eligible for investment corp loans REGIONAL Investment Corporation (RIC) loans will be available to more farm businesses from July 1 when new industries are introduced to the loan eligibility.

The eligibility update follows industry and public consultation completed by the RIC in late 2021 that asked if the loan eligibility should be expanded to which most agreed.

RIC acting chief executive officer Paul Dowler said the agricultural industry's success is supported by a diverse range of farm businesses and the RIC is pleased to be able to make more farm businesses eligible nationally from July 1, 2022. \"Australian agriculture is diverse and always evolving to meet new and emerging markets so it was an important time for the RIC several years into our operations to ask industry and the public if our loan eligibility should be expanded,\" Mr Dowler said. \"Most of the 85 responses we received to the industry and public consultation agreed more farm businesses should be eligible, so we have listened to that feedback and pleased to make the changes from July 1. \"The RIC will have $266 million available next financial year for concessional loans to farm businesses, farm related small businesses and plantation growers to support regional Australia and the agriculture sector's target to

As a result, from July 1 the eligibility will be expanded to horse breeders, turf farmers, tea tree, lavender, pharmaceutical/cosmetic plant growing, nursery and floriculture growers (where they weren't already eligible supplying for primary production such as shelter belts and winery root stock).

Club wraps up season with awards

By HEATHER CROSBIE THE Euroa Cricket Club recently held their presentation night.

It was a celebration of all the work the players, committee, sponsors and supporters have put in for the season.

Each week the club fields two junior teams and three senior teams participating in the Cricket Shepparton competition.

As well the club has an U12 intra club competition and a Woolworth Junior Blaster skills squad.

It was great to see so many of our young players playing not only in their age group but also playing at a senior level.

They are the future of the club.

He thanked the captains and coaches who have done a power of work both on and off the field.

Thanks also went to the players, parents, supporters and all our wonderful sponsors.

Their support keeps the club afloat enabling the teams to participate in the competition each week.

The club looks forward to next season.

Two for two wins for Avenel seniors KDFNL - AVENEL SENIOR FOOTBALL Our senior side ticked off their second win leading from start to finish coming away 64 point winners.

Our midfield were dominant all day lead by captain Kyle Maynard in a best on ground performance, Mitch Tobin was also very impressive on debut showing off his hard nose style of play, his younger brother Tommy played his best game for the club in the ruck and taking some big grabs across half forward. ‘Monk’ had a field day out on the wing, finishing with three goals, whilst up forward Tim Brook bagged 4 and big Jake Sutherland with 3. Clarkey lead the way in defence as

normal cutting off ball at will and sending us forward with run, along with his half back apprentice Chayse Thomson.

FOOTBALL RESERVES AVENEL Our reserves boys were clinical in their demolition of Dookie in their round 2 win. Leaving the Power Scoreless at the end of the game is a huge result seeing us top the ladder at the early stages of the season.

All across the ground we played team first swans footy, bringing praise from among the coaches. Andrew Dowling impressed in a new midfield role whilst Josh Carrafa and Kyle Hopkins were their normal dangerous selves around goal.

Dylan Ryan showed a clean set of heels on the wing as did Drummo.

NETBALL A GRADE AVENEL Another challenging game for A grade against a solid Dookie UTD team. A slow start meant we were chasing for the rest of the game. We managed to reduce Dookie’s lead from 15 to 9 in the 3rd quarter, but Dookie were too strong and overran us in the last quarter. A much better team performance this week, with some great signs of improvement. Renae McKeown and Niki Lord stood out as our best.

NETBALL B GRADE AVENEL In the B grade we had

a 5 goal win! Wow, what a game!! Such a even competitive game from both teams. The game was neck and neck for the first 3 quarters. Only a couple of goals separated the teams for the whole match. It was a wet, slippery game and each goal was reward for effort. Our defenders once again stood strong. Taking great intercepts and reading the play coming down the court. Our mid court players were able to steady the ball and deliver the ball to our shooters who withstood the pressure and were able to convert. With a strong final quarter and full team effort, we were able to come out on top with a 35 to 30 win.

Best players were Ruby Joynson and Alisha Franklin NETBALL C GRADE AVENEL C grade went down in their first loss of the season by 9 goals. This week we had 3 mid court players unavailable giving an opportunity to a couple of under 17 girls in Naveed Bennett & Charlotte Cotter to step up who were massive game changers. Girls within the team were put into positions that aren’t usually their set positions, but they worked hard on the court and did everything coach Dakota asked of them as a team. Going into the last quarter we were down by 1 goal, but unfortunately Dookie were able

to hold their ground in the rain and take home the win.

The girls should all be very proud of their efforts and take out all the positives of this weeks game. Best on went to Naveed Bennett & Kelly Crossing.

NETBALL JUNIORS AVENEL Our junior netball had a clean sweep of wins, continuing their great start to the season. Charlotte & Naveed dominated in the under 17 game, the two then double up and did the same in C grade. Ben Morgan & Layla Clarke showed their skill in the under 15 game named the best there whilst Natasha Harding & Lilly-Beth Boote stood out in the under 13s 9 goal win.

Longwood take four wins over Undera KDFNL - LONGWOOD FOOTBALL AND NETBALL THERE was a great buzz around Redlegs Stadium as Longwood hosted its first home game of the season.

The Redlegs hosted Undera and it was noticeable that both clubs, despite their respective positions on the Kyabram District Football League ladders, were very well supported with a big crowd filing in across the day.

Longwood was able to overcome some last minute adversity in unveiling its brand new second netball court.

The court was due to be painted on Friday, with inclement weather wreaking havoc.

As is often the case with the Leggers, people stepped up to ensure the smooth unveiling and some temporary lines were marked for the day.

The new court has been made possible through the hard work of a lot of people, particularly great investment of time and resources from Mark Goodall of Done Shovelling and president Ricki Shiner.

It aptly marked a theme for the day of people putting in and helping out, with the Leggers having many volunteers play their role across the day to ensure it was a successful day off-the-field as well as on it.

The Leggers had four teams that saluted, with the A Grade netball team getting the four points along with the under-13s, under-18s and reserves.

RESERVES FOOTBALL LONGWOOD The Redlegs’ reserves claimed their first win of the season, on the back of a great display of leadership from captain Beauden Webber and a five-goal performance from Aiden Oeser.

The under-18s and under13s footballers also claimed impressive victories, highlighted by great team performances.

In the senior football game, signs were positive pre-game with the Leggers heading out to battle with a positive mindset.

The game started a real arm wrestle, before some undisciplined play proved costly as Undera claimed the ascendancy.

Longwood fought to the final siren, but were ultimately outmatched.

Better players for the Redlegs were Caleb Ilbury, Joshua Cumberland and Kyle Withers.

UNDER 18 FOOTBALL LONGWOOD The under 18s took to the field like ducks to water notching up there first win for the season.

Lead well by their ever consistent captain jack McDonald kicking six goals to help push them forward.

The back line stood strong all day lead by Conner Peterson who was a clear stand out of the day.

Along with an impressive display of midfield prowess from young guns Cooper Gilder and Harry shiner.

All and all a fantastic game of football played by all the young Redlegs. The boys are eager for their next big hit out against Girgarre on return from the Easter break.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL LONGWOOD With a few players coming back from covid protocols and camps our numbers were better this week.

A strong breeze up one end made for one sided quarters.

Strong tackling from Tom Macdermid and Jac Roob in the first quarter slowed up Undera’s dominance. Longwood got their momentum in the second quarter and looked a different side scoring at will. Strong defence from Riley Walker repelled Undera’s scoring opportunities. In the third quarter Longwood managed to score a few goals against the breeze with Will Roob taking some strong marks which lead to several score involvements.

Angus Webster had a good quarter in defence. Highlights from the 4th quarter were James Macdermid with a goal from a tight angle and Jazmyn Wilson finding her groove with plenty of pos-

sessions and strong leading from Cooper Goodall. third best on went to Riley Walker, second went to Jazmyn Wilson and best on went to QLD import Tom filling in while on Holidays. Ended up a fun day for the leggers with a nice win.

NETBALL A GRADE The A Graders victory was set-up by a competitive first quarter, where training set pieces were put into play to great effect.

The Leggers’ goalers got on top after that and a considerable margin was in place through the second and third quarters.

Tireless defence created many opportunities through intercepts, and the midcourters commanded the ball.

The coaches stated following the game that the Leggers’ ability to find team rhythm was the overall highlight of the day, highlighting a potential that can be realised when the team works together on court.

Best-on-court went to the team’s firecracker Alex Hendren, who put in a fiercely determined display in wing attack, while the Coach’s Award went to star goal shooter Stevie Dickmann for

her consistency and dependability.

C GRADE NETBALL LONGWOOD In C Grade netball, numbers were depleted due to illness meaning opportunities presented for junior players to step up.

The senior players appreciated the juniors who doubled up.

Best-on-court was Michelle Groom, who was industrious in defence, while the Coach’s Award went to Megan Pellegrino who fed the ball well into the ring.

B GRADE NETBALL LONGWOOD The Redlegs took the court with a full team for round two at home, and for a new playing group showed great connections on court. In attack, the girls were creating space and feeding with precision into the ring; where the accuracy was right up there. The girls in defence put up a great fight, though several injuries to our players allowed the Lions to take an early lead which they were able to increase steadily each quarter. Through the midcourt the girls ran hard, lead well and never gave up, however the quick hands, direct passes and accurate shooting by the Lions saw

them run away with a 35 goal win. A huge thanks to Carly for stepping up and allowing us to finish the game with seven on court, and to the players who suffered injuries, we wish you all speedy recoveries. Best on court went to Emily Jenkinson and coaches award to Meg Ritchie.

UNDER 17 NETBALL LONGWOOD In the under-17s, there were plenty of positives and lots of opportunities identified to improve.

Best-on-court was Cassie Rawlings, who ran out all four quarters in the centre, and the Coach’s Award went to Kady Frances, who was a calm presence across the four quarters.

UNDER 15 NETBALL LONGWOOD In the under-15s, the game started perfectly for the Leggers establishing an early lead.

They could not sustain it as the Lions claimed the ascendancy.

Larni Shiner was best-oncourt, running her heart out all game and continually encouraging her teammates, while the Coach’s Award went to Peta Webster, who demonstrated versatility in moving into a new position.

UNDER 13 NETBALL LONGWOOD In the under-13s, there were more good signs particularly with increases in player numbers.

Zoe Marshall was best-oncourt, providing great voice and a great team-first attitude in supporting her teammates.

Riley Laidlaw received the Coach’s Award, playing her role for the team and demonstrating a capacity to move into a different position effectively.

The Redlegs regroup now, enjoy an Easter break, and look forward to resuming against Girgarre.

Serious reality check for Towners KDFNL - VIOLET TOWN FOOTBALL FROM chocolates to boiled lollies goes the saying and that’s what the towners delivered on Saturday.

From a great first up win to being completely outplayed

by Shepp East to the tune of 65 points.

An even first half saw the game in the balance but a five goal to nil third quarter had the game secured with a quarter to go.

There were some bright notes throughout the afternoon, Lachie Baldwin continued his great start to the season as did Jack Exell who was lively all day around half forward.

The under-siege backline was led by two youngsters who belied there years taking on a very classy and experienced Shepp East forward line.

Alex Overs also tried valiantly all game as did Riley Dowell who seemed to be everywhere.

Ken Sutcliffe wins 2022 bowls club champion

By AUDREY MCINTOSH On Sunday, April 10 the Euroa Bowls Club held their presentation day and social time together.

Bowlers played bowls before the presentation followed by tea.

President Neville Harris welcomed all to the green to enjoy a game of bowls until 5pm when all adjourned to the clubhouse for nibbles before the presentation.

First of all Neville mentioned the club pennant sides ended with three sides in finals but best of all was the Midweek Division two winning the pennant against Kyabram after trying for seven years to “bring home the bacon”.

Well done to this side, a great result after being 18 down at lunchtime.

Next came the presentation to the bus drivers, under the leadership of Len Fischer drove the pennant players on Tuesdays and Saturdays to their away matches.

They were Len himself, Barry Hatchman, Don Steers, Ian South, Marcus Mooney who was thanked

by Audrey McIntosh and presented with chocolate gifts.

lege and honor to play for the club.

Ladies Champion: Margaretha Cerini thanked all she played against and was sorry she couldn’t go any further in the Goulburn Murray event.

The ladies pairs have not been finalized as yet but should be in the very near future.

Neville thanked Libby and the girls in the kitchen and all then enjoyed a cold meat and salad tea followed by delicious sweets.

Maree Stevens, club secretary thanked Neville for his leadership over the past two years, sometimes having to deal with some contentions moments.

Bowls winners last Wednesday were Tony Kingma and Beryl Harris and Saturday Graeme Goode and Beth Alston.

Social bowls today Wednesday and then on Good Friday at 1pm for the royal Childrens Hospital appeal.

KDFNL - NETBALL VIOLET TOWN 15 & UNDER WITH several players unavailable this week the Violet Town team had nothing to lose.

The ball went up and down the court for several minutes to start the game before Shepp East scored the first goal and that was all they need to get their game going.

The Violet Town team put on some fantastic defensive pressure and continued come up with some intercepts and rebounds, but Shepp East were doing the same and the Violet Town team struggled to get it into their shooters.

Throughout the whole game the Violet Town team came up with same great passages of play but unfortunately couldn’t get their shots through the ring.

An amazing team effort by all.

Final Score VT 7 def by Shepp East 56.

Encouragement awards went to Bronti Mustey & Ashlea Antonis.

13 & UNDER No game due to Shepp East forfeiting.

C GRADE It was a slow start for the C grade team with the rain causing a few crucial errors.

The Shepp East attack end were too strong for Violet Town, however they held their heads high and had some good passages of play.

After the half time break the girls came out and played as a team and started to communicate.

Violet Town fought hard all game and came away with lots to build on for round 3.

Final Score VT 5 def by Shepp East 75. Best On Court Jasmine Weeks, Second Best Brianna Cotchin.

B GRADE Violet Town started the

game very flat after coming off a win last weekend, the girls were forcing passes that weren’t on, resulting in Shepp East easily turning the ball over and gaining a quick lead.

Violet Town held there head up all game and continued to work hard, putting as much defensive pressure as possible on Shepp East.

There were some great passages of play which were converted into goals.

Despite coming away with a loss the girls have lots to work towards and will continue to build as a team each week.

Final Score VT 19 def by Shepp East 61. Best On Court Steph Hayes, Second Best Meg Reed.

A GRADE Violet Town came out with a slow start, with a few crucial errors & inaccurate decision making saw the them go into the quarter break seven goals down.

The girls came out working at high intensity in the second quarter ensuring that Shepp East could not sneak away.

Coming into the last half the Violet Town defenders were able to come up with a lot of intercepts, allowing the Violet Town countless opportunities to even up the score, but with lots of unforced errors Shepp East were able to extend their lead.

Defensively Violet Town was able to continually get multiple intercepts & hands to ball ensuring as much pressure as possible on Shepp East, but unfortunately Shepp East were too strong for Violet Town and powered away in the last quarter.

The Violet Town team have a lot to take away from this game and will be ready to go for round three. Final Scores VT 29 def by Shepp East 50.

MENS Ideal Autumn conditions continued at the Nagambie golf course with light showers late in the week softening the course to allow the longer iron players to come to the fore.

A field of 28 golfers contested the stableford event with the longest iron player of them all Graeme Galvin pounding his way to victory with a total of 40 points , Galvo enjoyed the give in the ground and receptive greens to get to his winning score.

Tim Baldwin was paired with the winner on the day and pushed him all the way to the final hole only to lose in a count back, Baldwin’s quality irons allowed him to reach 40 points. Rounding out the top three was Chris Bence continuing to improve with a 2 shots better to handicap 38 points.

The nearest the pin prizes went the way of “Long’ Lindsay Hall going close to the ace on the difficult third, Glen Evans ecstatic in claiming the eighth, Michael Roberts finding the dance floor on the temporary 13th and Tim Baldwin firing one in close on the 16th.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE TUESDAY, April 5 was again played in ideal conditions, Lorraine Pemberton winning with 38 points, probably her handicap will be looked at.

Mal Inglis and Beat Vander School both finished with 35 points.

On Saturday, April 9 conditions of rain over night perhaps kept the numbers down but we didn’t get wet, conditions were good, A four ball best ball draw for partners was played and enjoyed by all.

The winners were Gail Rafferty and John Moore with a combined score of 69 points, lineballs were won on a count back by Kerry Hewlett and Ryley Mc Donald and Eleanor and Mick Dixey with 68 points.

Nearest the pins on the 4th was retained by the Club (sponsored by Luke Marple), 8th was also retained by the Club (sponsored by Eleanor Barns), 15th went to Kalon Winnel (sponsored by Euroa Hot Bread Shop), 17th was won by Eleanor Barns (sponsored by DPR Insurance Brokers).

On Thursday the club hosted the Dalhousie Veterans, we had 65 players take cards, the most Vets for the season.

Our President Wally Dunn has been protecting his handicap in preparation for this day, he won with 43 points and only lost one stroke.

Allan Rowarth found some time earlier in the week spending some hours with his chain saw removing a lot of unwanted overhanging limbs and branches, job well done.

The wood group also got to work in readiness for Winter as the orders are coming in.

Results of pennant played: Handicap Team played Marysville at Eildon and lost 3/2 David Kennett lost, Arron Perrs lost, Garry Hewlett won, Steven Lister won and Phill Rafferty lost.

Scratch Team played Romsey at Lancefield and won 4/1 ,Ryley Mc Donald won 3/1, Jack Mc Donald lost 2 down, John Moore won 5/3, Peter Smith won 2/1, Grant Pearce won 3/2 Next Saturday the game is Stableford with Chris Bennett duty manager.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB THE weather played a few tricks on Saturday with wind, rain and sunshine, but there was some great golf played nonetheless.

Five juniors teed off in the morning and didn’t they put on a show.

Hudson Black must’ve been watching the masters as, after

nearly driving the 200m par five, he then proceeded to chip in for an albatross.

Well done Huddy and congratulations on winning the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza voucher for this effort.

Amazingly it wasn’t enough to secure the victory though, as Owen Smith got on the par train over the final three holes to pip Hudson in a countback.

Third place, just two shots behind was Rayden Hannigan who was stiff not to get a voucher for his NTP on the last hole.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the birdie this time.

Alex Smith shot his best ever score of 77 off the stick giving him 45 stableford points, so it was understandable that he was feeling pretty confident of clinching the win for the day, that is until his young nephew Campbell handed in his card which was also his best ever round of 103 off the stick and also 45 points.

So, it came down to a countback, which unfortunately for Alex was a no contest as Cam scored 27 points on the back nine to easily claim the winner’s voucher.

Poor Alex was crestfallen, however, was very happy for his nephew’s great score, and he received a couple of balls for runner-up and NTP on the 14th.

Line balls went to Tim

Batten with 38 points and Captain Jed with 35 points.

As mentioned Alex won NTP on the 14th and Bill Eddy played a nice shot into the 7th to collect a ball for D & P. A small field of ladies also played stableford and Dee Wright put a nice round together scoring 34 points to win Lyn Carracher’s trophy.

Dee and Lyn were ball winners and Pam Pedder hit a good shot onto the 14th for NTP. Dee is organising the Mother’s Day raffle this year so please make sure you bring something suitable for the raffle prize and raffle booklets are on the table at the front door.

The club hosted men’s pennant on Sunday and despite a few matches being down at the turn, they came home with a 4/1 victory over Whittlesea.

Captain Jed had a comfortable 6/4 win, Prez Dale secured a two up victory, Alex won 2/1 and Jameson moseyed down the 19th before claiming his victory.

Bad luck to Matt who battled all day but just couldn’t get there in the end.

Thanks to Rachel and Jess for presenting the delicious pulled beef rolls for lunch and also to the ladies who provided those yummy slices.

Finally, Committee members are reminded of the monthly meeting tonight (Wednesday 13th) - 7.30 pm at Clubhouse.

Rohrlach and McKinnon win championships THE Euroa Clay Target Club conducted two Championship events at the Violet Town Complex on Sunday, April 10.

Both Championships, the Continental and Side

by Side, were sponsored by Rob and Kerrie Stackhouse for which the club was very much appreciated.

Shooting conditions varied considerably with bright sunlight making the targets stand out well then sudden cloud producing very challenging with the target very hard to spot.

The Continental Championship is one of the more difficult events with the targets being thrown faster and at varying heights and it was Local Top Shot, Tony Rohrlach who shot 24/25 to win outright with Rob Barns and Mansfield’s David Luelf one target behind on 23/25.

Tony also shot a perfect 75/75 to be the top score in the Point Score Trophy event.

Then it was visiting shooter from the Walmer Club near Bendigo who produced the perfect round of 25/25 in the Side

by Side Championship.

This event is shot using the old traditional Side by Side Shotguns and it was quite a sight to see some of the experts struggling to cope with the old style

gun.

Sarah Bullen aces the 18th with a hole in one LADIES Captain Sarah Bullen achieved every golfer’s dream with a hole in one on the 113 metre 18th hole.

Squeals and cheers from her friends in her playing group were heard all over the back nine late on Saturday afternoon.

In the ladies Wednesday competition Erica Mercer’s 38 points was the best in division one while Pam Sprunt had 39

points for the second win in two weeks in division two on a count back from Ann Hill.

Ros Doxey was next best on 36 points.

Peter Davies massive 44 points will see the handicaper bring him in after winning the men’s Wednesday competition in a field of 24 players.

Jeff Moran’s 39 points saw him in front of his handicap again.

Peter Mc Ictridge one back on 38.

The Drummond Golf Monthly Medals were played on Saturday and in the men’s Dale McIntosh Net 65 saw him claim his first ever Monthly Medal and now has his eyes on the Medal of Medalists later in the year.

Dale’s round included two 2balls and a Nearest the Pin on 18 inside 30 centimeters.

Paddy McCarthy and Peter McMahon also having multiple two shot birdies.

Ian Sutherland had a return to form to claim division two with a Net 73.

Ball winners were Paul Robinson 70, Paddy McCarthy 70, Marcus Steers 73.

Dan Rubeck won the putting with 25.

Justine Collins won the Ladies Monthly Medal with Net

71 and Deb Cox won division two with Net 74.

The division one Section one pennant team had a big 4-1 win over Seymour on the lovely Hidden Valley Course, Matt Mills won 2/1, Paul Robinson went down 4/3 while each of Glen McMartin , Mark Corradin and Josh Bell had 5/4 wins.

ford on their own course.

Paddy McCarthy went down 3/2 Frank O’Connor was one up, Peter Dawson lost 3/2, Dale McIntosh won 3/1 and Richard Eddy won 2 up.

Next Saturday there is a Stableford Round and on the Anzac weekend the Men will play the qualifying round of the Murphy Motors four ball on Saturday and there is a mixed four ball on Anzac Day.

Nagambie hosts national rowing championship with great success

By DIANE GRANT IT was a massive challenge for Nagambie but it gave its very best to stage the 2022 Australian Rowing Championships that were given to it in very short notice since the Penrith course in NSW was flooded out.

The rowing course, township and the whole district was abuzz with rowers, coaches, family members, officials, volunteers and many people who supported this major national rowing event.

Rowing Australia CEO Ian Robson said “there had been careful and thorough consideration given to all available venues with Nagambie ultimately selected because of a strong commitment and willingness expressed by Rowing Victoria, the Shire of Strathbogie, Nagambie Rowing Club and Greater Shepparton City Council to contribute and make this event succeed.”

He also said “The Regatta brought Australia’s top elite rowers and schools together to battle it out to be crowned National and Interstate Champions in their respective boat classes.

The regional clubs and regional venues such as Nagambie Lakes are such a compelling part of the heartbeat of our sport.”

The Australian Rowing Championships is Australia’s largest rowing regatta and incorporates these signature events: The Australian Open Rowing Championships from Rowing Associations in the ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC and WA. The Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships.

The King and Queen’s Cups Interstate Regatta.

Racing started on Monday, March 28 and the weeklong event finished on Sunday April 3.

The big boats had to battle it out for their clubs on Lake Nagambie and did their clubs and supporters proud.

How the rowers performed determined whether they represent our country at International events.

“The start of the week was perfect for rowing”, Nagambie Rowing Club member Dave Andrews told the Gazette.

“Through the week the rowers had to compete in some very windy conditions and on Saturday some rain.”

Mr Andrews was on the starting platform as a volunteer for most of the week and he could see how each day progressed on the lake.

The best racing conditions on Lake Nagambie were saved for the last day as conditions looked calm and the air was full of excitement.

Sunday was the ultimate day of competition that included the finals of the Open Schools Championships and the Kings and Queen’s Cups.

NSW reclaimed the Kings Cup as Victoria retained the Queen’s Cup honour.

Magpies win in a close one to kick off season in reserves GVFNL - EUROA RESERVES FOOTBALL

By TONY BRODIE THE game commenced with light drizzling rain which tested the players in the early part of the game.

As the game opened it appeared that it was going to be a very even affair - both teams were hard at the contest working to get the ball into their forward lines.

The Mansfield team was having the opportunity to win the ball from the centre as their ruckman had a very good leap which made it hard for our ruckman and on ball players.

This group had to work hard to gain first use of the ball so Euroa could get the ball into our forward line and take pressure off their young backline.

The first quarter was a very even contest with the Euroa forward line not capitalising on a number of opportunities to score goals.

The team was unfortunate to lose Riley Aldous

in the first quarter due to a line injury - he would have given us much strength around the stoppages.

As the game continued you could sense that the result would go down to the final siren - both teams having opportunities to score which resulted in the scores during all the quarters staying close.

During the third quarter the Euroa on ballers were starting to run better, winning the ball and moving it quickly into the forward line.

The team had limited height up forward, resulting in the players looking for moving targets.

As the game moved into the final quarter it appeared that the Mansfield team were getting on top and it would a test for our players to get back in front.

To the credit of the team, they matched the opposition and with good teamwork they were able to hit the front and hold on to the lead - taking the four points in the process.

The back line - lead by Nick Brodie supporting his young group of defenders - were able to hold out the opposition. Good games from Harrison Jarvie, Peter Cairns and Lachlan Cooke meant there was plenty of run for the team.

Wins across board for first round GVFNL - EUROA A GRADE NETBALL THE A Grade girls were super keen to get back into netball and with a few new faces to the Euroa line up, it was looking exciting.

The nerves showed early in the quarter with some missed goals.

Mansfield were making Euroa pay with early accuracy, but through some very strong defensive play by Tylah Marchbank and Elle Warnock, Euroa seemed to find its tempo- gaining a seven goal lead.

Euroa did not lose any momentum after the break and were getting some good drive through the midcourt with Kellie Davidson, Eliza Hoare and Sophie Owen.

The third quarter was extremely strong by Euroa, Kellie, Tylah and Sophie putting a lot of pressure of the Mansfield attack only allowing four goals to be scored.

Eliza and Karly were hitting the goal circle, and Bree Poole and Bridget Hill were working well in the ring together, finishing off the team’s good work with accuracy.

Some positional changes were made in the last quarter, but Euroa did not falter.

A great effort by the whole team saw Euroa with a great win to start the season.

Euroa 68. Mansfield 25 UNDER 17 Euroa U17s netball team started the 2022 season with a fast and furious

game against the Mansfield Eagles at Memorial Oval on Saturday.

With a mixture of old and new faces, the young Magpies took to the court full of enthusiasm and confidence.

The first quarter was everything a game of netball should be, tightly contested and hard fought. The combined defending prowess of Millie Watson, Chloe Salter and Laura Frewen was quickly put to the test as they joined forces to try and minimise the impact of Mansfield’s Goal Shooter, who was literally head and shoulders above all three girls.

Persistence paid off, with the Euroa girls winning three of the four quarters, and getting many, many opportunities to fine-tune their vertical leap.

It was an impressive display of defensive teamwork for the first game of the season.

By half time Euroa had established a small lead, a lead they were keen to keep hold of. Encouragement and advice from Coach Megan O’Bree at the main break ensured the team returned to the court settled and ready to continue on with what had been a successful game plan.

Euroa’s mid-court players comprising of Meg Walker, Hannah Kubeil, and newcomer Abby Harrison did not stop running all day, their legs a blur of constant movement as they manoeuvred and pivoted their way up and down the court.

The new goaling combination of Sienna Trotter and Molly Redfern was very effective from the outset, as their high fives and fist bumps would indicate.

Both girls worked hard to find space in what was a very physical goal ring, and their goaling accuracy was excellent- just reward for the team’s hard work all over the court.

Despite a brief fight back

by Mansfield at the start of the final term, Euroa continued to do all the right things at all the right times which resulted in an 8 goal win to the Magpies.

It was a fabulous way to start their season, and Megan O’Bree’s career as U17 Coach.

UNDER 15 What a stellar start for the U15 Magpie girls, taking their first victory in the 2022 GVL season over the Mansfield Eagles.

The game proved to be a nail biter, with the first quarter being an old-fashioned arm-wrestle which set the tone for the gameintense and entertaining.

While it was goal for goal, the Magpies were able to hold the lead by one goal at the end of the first term, 11-10.

It was a game in which all girls played well.

There was the relentless pressure of the midcourt from Ruby Watson, Marnie Salter and Irish Anderson, along with the stifling de-

For the first half of play, the scores held tight.

However, the Euroa girls turned up the heat in the third term with some wellfed balls into goalers Tash Reid, Issy Smith and Ella Hill who converted beautifully, and extended the lead to seven goals by the end of the third term.

The final quarter continued to deliver be a high quality game of junior netball, and when the final whistle blew, the score was 29-20 to Euroa.

Six Euroa footballers scouted for Murray Bushrangers IN an impressive show of talent and skill, six young men from Euroa Football Netball Club have been selected to play in the Murray Bushrangers statewide football team in the NAB League.

Cohen Paul, Darby Wilson, Mitchell Walters, Will Creevey and Ryan Hill made their under 16’s Murray Bushrangers debut on NEWEST RECRUITS: Cohen Paul (left), Darby Wilson, Fletcher Paul, Mitchell Walters, Will Creevey and Ryan Hill were all scouted for the 2022 Murray Bushrangers football team.

Saturday, April 2 in a match against Gippsland Power at La Trobe University Sports Park in Bundoora, while Fletcher Paul has been selected to play in the under 19’s team.

The Murray Bushrangers have produced some significant AFL talent with names like Steele Sidebottom, Brett Deledio and Barry Hall all being past players and seven Bushrangers players being drafted into the AFL in 2021.

The township of Euroa is very proud of the boys’ achievements and looks forward to seeing the progress of all six of our representatives.

Eagles too good for Magpies in first round GVFNL - EUROA SENIOR FOOTBALL IN a welcome to return to local sport, the Euroa Magpies senior football side took to the ground at the traditional time slot of 2pm Saturday afternoon.

A fantastic crowd was in attendance as so many from both the Mansfield and Euroa communities embraced being back at the footy.

Mansfield were off to a flying start with ball entry into their forward line very quick, resulting in scoring opportunities almost every time they went forward.

Euroa were not as efficient however - it took the magic of Jett Trotter to break this run of forward entries without scoring a goal as he snapped truly to get the Magpies on the board.

This welcome return for Jett was celebrated right round the ground - his first game back for almost a year after suffering a horrendous injury early last season.

Andrew Smith again underlined why he is the reigning senior best and fairest with another dominant display in the ruck and round the ground.

The support he received from new to the senior team but Euroa boy nonetheless Hudson Ramsden was wonderful.

His ability to give midfielders Jacob Gleeson, Marcus Varley and Ben Giobbi first use of the football was first class.

Despite this energy and effort, the Mansfield Eagles were pressing hard and scoring well when going forward. Defensive efforts from the McKernan boys Jack and Linc - alongside

another promising senior footballer in Jack Frewen meant the Eagles were not having things their own way entirely.

After a ‘rev up’ at half time by coach Scott Rowan the Magpies came out of the sheds determined to pull back the five-goal deficit they faced at the long break.

The main way they were able to do this was to make definite efforts in getting the ball in quick to the key forwards of Tristan Davies and Erish Uthayakumar.
