Riled up at Ruffy Report to council declared dangerous trees as ‘low risk’ despite p defects SOME members of the Ruffy community have raised questions over the arborist report released last month that suggested the Longwood-Ruffy Road is a low risk area.

The report found that the area remained ‘low risk’ according to the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) method.

The ‘Low’ Risk Rating was established due to the low target occupancy of the road.

This rating was determined despite the report confirming that many of the trees have significant defects, have the potential to fail towards or onto the road, and would cause serious consequences if the failed part impacted a road user.

located within a 1.9km section of the Longwood-Ruffy Road, an area that is used for residents, school busses, farm workers, stock trucks, fertiliser trucks, farming equipment, local CFA, ambulances, shire workers, tourists and contractors.

Ruffy resident Rob Jamieson gave his thoughts on the arborist report and the conclusions outlined in it.

“On the surface it’s a pretty good report in comparison to the previous one,” he said.

“I don’t have any particular problems with how the report is put together.

“My issue is that the road has been deemed as low use.

Minister lends an ear to councils MINISTER for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King visited Indi recently, speaking with representatives of eight of the nine local councils in a meeting organised by Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines.

Minister King is responsible for multi-billion dollar infrastructure funding decisions and gave local government representatives in the North East insight into the development of the new government’s first budget to be handed down in October.

“I met with Minister King early in this term of parliament to make the case to her about the need for investment in our region,” Dr Haines said.

“I was pleased that she accepted my invitation to meet with local councillors, and that we were able to have the meeting in the beautiful town of Bright.

“Local government plays a vital role in delivering infrastructure for our region and in regional development and roads, so it was crucial they were able to get this access to the minister.

“When there is a new government with new processes and priorities, councils need to know how best to work with the government to achieve their goals, and this meeting allowed councillors to get this insight.”

Dr Haines said a major issue raised by council representatives was funding for roads.

“Particularly with the wet conditions we are experiencing, it is becoming more difficult for councils to keep up with maintenance of roads,” she said.

“While the Federal Government has committed to Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program funding to councils for now, I want to see funding transparency and certainty for our councils in this area so they can plan appropriately and keep our communities safe on the road.”

Councillors and the minister also discussed how major projects would be funded by the government, NBN and mobile phone funding and funding for local hospitals, including Albury Wodonga Health and Bright Hospital.

Free TAFE course to help address shortages in demand industries MORE free TAFE courses are available next year in demand industries such as in emergency healthcare, mental health, family violence and agriculture.

Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said there had never been a better time for anyone across northern Victoria to start studying at TAFE, with four new priority free TAFE courses and six new short courses from next year.

She said the healthcare system needs more staff to get patients the care they need.

“These new TAFE courses build on our work to deliver a world-class health system by making studying nursing free and hiring 2200 paramedics as part of a 22,000-strong boost to

our health workforce,” Ms Symes said.

The Diploma of Emergency Health Care course, currently delivered at Victoria University and Swinburne University, qualifies students to work in non-emergency patient transport as ambulance transport attendants, patient transport officers and ambulance community officers - as well as providing a pathway into university paramedicine courses.

Other new courses to be added to the Free TAFE list for 2023 include Certificate III in Production Horticulture, Graduate Certificate in Client Assessment and Case Management - which upskills health and community services workers in the family violence field, and

Nursing, 80 per cent in the Certificate IV in Disability and more than 113 per cent in early childhood courses to support the Labor Government’s Best Start, Best Life reforms.

Hopes sink for Lake Nagambie Coastal rowing g chosen over flat-water rowing g for 2026 Games

By GUS RIDDER NAGAMBIE’s chances of hosting a rowing event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games look slim, with the decision made last week to select coastal rowing rather than the flat-water variety.

The state government decision to choose coastal rowing for the Commonwealth Games suggests that an ocean or sea venue would be the preferred option, rather than a lake.

The last few months had been a significant campaign by the Strathbogie Shire Council to get Lake Nagambie included in the games.

Member for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell had pushed for Nagambie, and flat-water rowing, to be included too.

Rowing Australia meanwhile has thrown their support behind the decision to select coastal rowing for the games.

“This is a fantastic milestone moment for our sport,” chief executive officer Ian Robson said.

“We have worked very hard to bring rowing back to the Commonwealth Games.

“Coastal Rowing is a new and exciting format of our sport.”

World Rowing executive director Vincent Gaillard shared Mr Robson’s enthusiasm for the coastal rowing addition.

“We are particularly excited about the inclusion of Coastal Rowing (Beach Sprints) in the Commonwealth Games in 2026, a new form of rowing which has been growing globally following a significant effort to increase our sport’s universality across continents.”

Venues are still to be finalised for the events.

While the report has been passed on to the Strathbogie Shire Council, Mr Jamieson still had concerns about what will happen next.

“Has council actually accepted this report?” he said.

“Will council follow the recommendations of the report or will they make any adjustments?”

Council chief executive officer Julie Salomon spoke back in June on council’s involvement in the matter.

“Strathbogie Shire Council makes the health and safety of our residents a priority,” she said.

“In this instance, we are doing everything we can within our areas of responsibility.

“We must listen to our expert arborists and we always act when they advise there is a safety risk.”

Council declined to make further comment when asked this week.

Andrew Bond, another Ruffy resident and CFA volunteer, spoke on the tragic realities that an incident would have on the town.

“In our shire, a callout to a fatality will generally mean the responders know the person,” he said.

“CFA turnouts for fallen trees are up and we don’t want to have to respond to a fatality in our own backyard.”

Mr Jamieson agreed that the consequences of a tree falling would be felt throughout the community.

A man was seriously injured last month after a tree fell on his vehicle on the Hume Freeway in Longwood East, causing members of the Ruffy community to reiterate the significant dangers that falling trees can have.

Haines deputy chair for anti-corruption commission INDI MP Helen Haines has been appointed the deputy chair of the National Anti-Corruption Commission Committee.

Dr Haines said she is honoured to have been elected deputy chair of the joint select committee which will inquire into the National Anti-Corruption Commission legislation.

“I have committed to working constructively with the government to ensure the anti-corruption commission model that is implemented is the best it can be, and I am glad to be able to continue that work in this role,” she said.

“It is significant that a senior member of this committee comes from outside the major parties and it will contribute to the multi-partisanship that I hope will support the NACC.” The committee is calling for submissions commenting on the provisions of the bills and encourages that submissions, which close on Friday, October 14, be concise.

Funding for Euroa Railway Precinct Master Plan We have welcomed a $100,000 funding boost from the Victorian Government to create a master plan for the land surrounding the Euroa Railway Station. Council has also contributed $30,000 to the funds – from the Victorian Government’s Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program – to complete the project.

The Euroa Precinct Master Plan Project will investigate future opportunities at the Euroa train station site, including opportunities for developing any surplus land.

Council Meeting Strathbogie Shire Council’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18 2022, at 6pm at the Euroa Community Conference Centre, 1b Bury Street, Euroa.

Council community grants up to $5000 open for round two STRATHBOGIE Shire residents are being encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5000 in council’s 2022/23 Community Grants Program round two, which closes on November 1.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said this is the second round of grants available under five different categories to encourage as many projects and

community ideas as possible.

The five grant categories are: • Active and healthy communities • Arts and culture • Environment and sustainability • Facilities and infrastructure; and • Small projects Cr Binks said grants from the first round had already revitalised many of the

organisations and clubs in the region, with round two having the capacity to kick start even more new projects.

“Whether it is a small request for grant funding or a larger request which is supported by other contributions, our Community Grant Program provides a great opportunity to achieve inspiring projects in any one of the categories listed,” she said.

Labor commits to local men’s sheds and seniors

Nationals for Euroa campaign kicks off The Nationals’ candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has officially launched her campaign for November’s state election, touring the electorate with volunteers and grassroots members.

The tour kicked off in Wanalta before visiting Rushworth, Murchison, Nagambie, Seymour, Euroa, Benalla, and Colbinabbin.

Outgoing Member for Euroa Steph Ryan said the energy around Ms Cleeland’s campaign was something to behold.

“Annabelle will be a great advocate for our region,” Ms Ryan said “She’s in touch with the needs of our communities and has a broad range of life experience from her time as a journalist, farmer and business owner.

“I’d encourage anyone who’s keen to get involved in campaigning, politics and

shaping a bright future for our region to reach out to Annabelle and get on board.”

Ms Cleeland said she was excited to get involve new people in the political process and continue the hard work of Ms Ryan.

“Steph has been a great MP and is well respected as a genuine and local voice something I am determined to continue if elected,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Politics doesn’t need to be all doom and gloom; it should be fun and focused on an optimistic vision for our region’s future.

“There’s certainly a lot of work to be done after a couple of incredibly difficult years but seeing people back out and enjoying events like the Benalla Cup is great to see.

“The Nationals will always be the voice of regional Victoria and fight for the crucial services we desperately need.”

LABOR candidate for Euroa in this year’s state election Angela Tough has stressed the importance of men’s sheds in country communities, committing funding towards a local facility.

“The Euroa Men’s Shed will be refurbished with a funding grant from the Labor State Government,” Ms Tough said.

“This is great news for our community and comes on the back of funds already being put to good work by the Murchison Men’s Shed.”

Ms Tough visited the Euroa group last week and discussed the projects being undertaken.

“I recently dropped in for cake and a chat to hear firsthand about the great work the Euroa Men’s Shed do for our community,” she said.

“Visiting the Euroa Men’s Shed was a terrific opportunity to hear how important these groups are to our town.

“Men of all ages are welcome and usually work on community projects or bring their own pieces and projects.

“I was fortunate enough to be there for the monthly birthday cake—which put

THE State Labor Government’s dining and entertainment program appeared to be a hit with customers, with Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Ben Carroll last week confirming there were more than 700,000 successful claims under the initiative.

The program allowed customers to claim 25 per cent cash back when they spent $40 or more enjoying the best the state has to offer.

Customers could claim up to $125 cash back each and make multiple claims until they reached the cap.

Within the Strathbogie Shire, the program appeared to be popular too as more than 900 claims were made through the program.

People claimed back more than $32,700 cash back from purchase and the scheme supported consumer spending on dining and entertainment experiences worth more than $146,000 in Strathbogie Shire.

leased by the state government, the cash back scheme has supported more than $85 million in consumer spending and dining experiences across Victoria.

Valley take out the top three most popular areas for vouchers claimed with the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Ranges also a hit.

Dining out and take-away was a hit with almost 80 percent of all claims so far spent on restaurants, pubs, cafes and winery experiences.

Almost 65 per cent of people who made a claim said they made their purchase because of the program or spent more than they otherwise would have.

“It’s no surprise Victorians have been taking full advantage of more affordable dining and entertainment experiences, while showing community spirit in supporting their hardworking local businesses,” Mr Carroll said.

“This program is helping to support jobs, build business and consumer confidence and contribute to our state’s continued economic recovery.”

The Dining and Entertainment Program was part of the State Government’s $200 million Victorian Business Stimulus Package supporting local businesses and jobs.

Students show outstanding leadership THE outdoor play area at the Avenel Primary School was covered in colourful hoops, throwing bean bags and large bulbous throwing rockets, and a lot of little people.

Standing tall amongst these little ones were the Euroa Secondary College VET (Vocational Education and Training) sport and recreation students, some with whistles at the ready and others dealing with a barrage of inquisitive cries of “excuse me, excuse me, excuse me”, from those anxious for the activities to begin.

The college’s students have been spending time throughout the year, with the Avenel and Nagambie Primary School students in grades four to six, teaching basic athletics skills, coaching, encouraging participation in events, and having loads of fun.

As part of their VET Sport and Recreation certificate III course, ESC students develop the skills for coaching foundation level athletes and building their knowledge of conducting sport and recreation sessions in a safe and supportive environment.

Ms Saxon proudly explained the program.

“The VET certificate course has been running since 2016 at the college and the students can use this course as a year 12 subject,” she said.

“The focus of the VET Sport and Recreation course is for the students to develop their leadership skills.

“It is also directed to enable our students to conduct sport and rec sessions in a variety of settings in line

with OHS rules and regulations.

“The additional benefit to the VET students is gaining an understanding of the expectations within the workforce when conducting sport and recreation sessions, and the skills they learn on the

course can be transferred to any work setting”.

Ross Davis, principal of Avenel Primary School, was enthusiastic about the program and the help it provides for the students.

“Our students have loved the ESC VET students coming to our school,” he said.

“They have enjoyed the activities that have been provided and the connections that have been made with the older students.

“I think it is a great way for the schools to work together.

“The strong benefits are the positive influence the older ESC VET students have on our kids and the provision of a strong role model for our students to look up to.

“It is a great program that provides many positives for our school and our students.”

Ms Saxon spoke about the benefits that the program can provide to the students participating.

“VET sport and recreation students can use their skills in a range of tertiary areas,” she said.

“Students can also attain jobs with the skills they have learnt and work with the regional primary schools.”

There are additional certificates that the VET students attain such as First Aid and Community Coaching.

Free online sessions with student psychologists on offer

New laws to thwart farm trespassers NEW laws have been introduced in Victoria to allow livestock owners to voluntarily establish extra biosecurity measures on their properties, and to protect them from trespassers.

Changes to the Livestock Management Act 2010 and Livestock Management Regulations 2021 have introduced offences for non-compliance with prescribed biosecurity measures, including entering agricultural premises without consent.

Offenders will face onthe-spot fines of $1,294 for individuals and $8,321 for organisations, the toughest fines in Australia.

Further penalties of up to $11,095 for individuals and $55,476 for organisations could apply for more serious offending.

Agriculture Victoria executive director of agriculture regulatory policy Angela Brierley says these new laws will help deter people from trespassing on farms and better enable prosecutions of trespassers.

“Victorian farmers work hard to keep their animals safe and protect them from pests and diseases with robust biosecurity systems,” Ms Brierley said.

“These new laws seek to deter behaviour that puts that hard work and the safety of their animals at risk.”

Ms Brierley said producers choosing to take advantage of these new protections must have a biosecurity management plan (BMP) that includes a farm map and mandatory information, as well as compliant biosecurity signage.

Specific visitor consent procedures must also be followed under the new laws.

“Producers who already have an on-farm biosecurity plan in place can simply add a BMP coversheet to this plan to be covered by the new laws,” she said.

“We recommend using the BMP coversheet templates available from our website to ensure all

mandatory information is included.”

For an offence to apply under the new laws, the biosecurity management plan must include: • A clear title: including the words ‘BIOSECURITY MANAGEMENT PLAN’ and the address of the premises to which it applies.

• Contact information: the name and contact details of the nominated person(s), for example, the owner or livestock manager.

• Area description: a description, map or plan of the whole or specified part of the premises to which the BMP applies, that accurately describes the boundaries of the premises.

• Preparation details: additional details including the day that the BMP comes into operation and the name of the person who prepared the BMP. For more information or to download templates visit: agriculture.vic.gov. au/bmp.

Cattlemen convened after three-year COVID hiatus MORE than 3000 people gathered at Merrijig earlier this month, as the Mountain Cattlemen's Association of Victoria (MCAV) hosted its first annual get together following a three-year hiatus due to COVID. Joined by the Man From Snowy River Tom Burlinson, who signed autographs and met fans as part of the film’s 40th anniversary celebrations, MCAV welcomed attendees from across the state as the body called on State Government to implement practical management of the High Country region.

MCAV president and Merrijig local Bruce McCormack said more needed to be done to rein in out-of-control national parks.

“Over the years the governments have announced ever-increasing areas of national parks, but there was no ongoing funding to manage those parks,” he said.

RURAL Victorians can now access free sessions with a provisional psychologist through an innovative new program by telehealth platform Rural Health Connect.

With psychologist waiting lists stretching months in many rural areas and cost also pushing sessions out of reach for many, this new solution aims to make psychology sessions more accessible.

Provisional psychologists are psychology students in their final years of study who complete regular sessions with a board approved supervisor.

Through this project, provisional psychologists will be available on the Rural Health Connect platform for regular therapy sessions at no cost, as a means of early intervention and to help reduce the pressure on registered psychologists.

Users can access up to 20 sessions via telehealth with the same psychologist to help in the following areas: anxiety, low level depression, sleep issues, grief and loss, anger and stress.

It is available to children and adults.

There is no need for a GP referral or mental health treatment plan.

This means that users can

This pilot is initially open primarily to residents of bushfire affected areas and will likely be expanded across all of rural Victoria.

“We are really excited to launch this project as we think it provides a really innovative solution to long term issues around accessing mental health services in the bush,” Rural Health Connect director Megan Gomez said.

“This project removes a lot of barriers that can prevent people getting help - long waiting lists, cost, lack of access to a GP for a referral, to name a few.

“Provisional psychologists are a bit of an untapped workforce and it makes sense for them to form part of the solution.”

Federation University Head of Clinical Services and Programs Associate Professor Megan Jenkins said provisional psychologists are in their final years of study and are skilled workers with the capacity to provide a high level of psychological care to individuals who would otherwise struggle to access a psychologist.

“This program will help us to train a generation of psychologists with important insight into the unique challenges faced by rural and regional Australians,” he said.

“Federation University has a strong commitment to improving access to psychologists for rural and regional Victorians, this partnership with Rural Health Connect will help us to deliver more services to under-resourced communities as they recover from natural disasters and the impact of the pandemic.”

Project partners consist of Rural Health Connect, Federation University and the Victorian Government.

A GROUP of talented creatives from the Strathbogie Shire and beyond have reopened ‘Pop-Up Arts’, a store selling art, clothing, jewellery, candles, books, and more at 52-54 Binney Street in Euroa.

A soft opening was held on Friday, September 30 with a crowd gathering to enjoy some wine and browse some of the creations made by local and regional artists.

Some of the quirky creations might be familiar to some, with the store being open from October 2021 to January 2022.

Bill Harris, one of those involved in setting up the pop-up shop, spoke about the store and how it’s been since opening.

“We’ve been putting it together for a while now,” Mr Harris said.

“It’s such a great space here on Binney Street, and with the Show and Shine it was great to get people in.

“Most of the artists and people selling items in here are local.

“There are a few other regional artists too.”

Mr Harris has his ‘Birds in Focus’ wildlife photography on display; with his calendars, postcards and more on display.

Mr Harris has been regularly partnered at the pop-up with fellow Euroa local, Melanie Ball.

Ms Ball, who has been a major factor in the shop’s success, has become very well known in the local creative circles for her ‘Appliquez Moi’ decorated hats.

The wearable artwork has proven to be a major drawcard for people visiting the shop.

Ms Ball’s achievements with her hats are rivalled by her career writing ‘top walks’, books outlining the best walks in Victoria, Tasmania and all of Australia.

The pop-up will remain open until Christmas time, giving plenty of time to stop in and look at the wide variety of items.

“From now until around Christmas, every Thursday to Saturday from 10am-2pm we’ll be open,” Mr Harris said.

WITH wine shows returning after COVID, judging for this year’s Great Australian Shiraz Challenge was completed last week at Fowles Wine in Avenel.

Results will be released in November for the competition, which is now in its 28th year, when its chairman and founder Alister Purbrick of Tahbilk initiates The Shiraz Challenge.

Speaking at a dinner to thank this year’s event judges and sponsors at Fowles Wine restaurant, Mr Purbrick spoke of his vision of celebrating Shiraz as a signature Australian wine variety.

“The challenge has become a unique opportunity for Australia’s premier wine makers to showcase Shiraz, benchmark winemaking and regional differences, and assist with reinforcing the reputation of the variety as a national and international wine icon,” he said.

Event manager Julian McLean thanked Fowles Wine for the wine judging facilities and dinner of appreciation for the judges and sponsors.

Conservationists developing at St John’s Primary LAST term the year 5-6 students from St John’s Primary School in Euroa were invited by local resident, Ray Thomas to work with him to build nesting boxes.

The nesting boxes are intended for the Phascogale, a local indigenous carnivore being threatened by foxes, cats and dogs.

The children were meticulous in their construction of this very important endeavour.

Last week Ray invited the children to plant native Banksia along the banks of the Sevens Creek.

The local area is very important to the children who walk, fish, swim and ride their bikes along the creek paths.

Under instructions from Ray, the children learnt how to plant the Banksias, ensuring the best possible chance of survival.

The soil was rich, moist and fertile, the perfect place for the plants to thrive.

The children worked in two groups planting in different sections of the Creek with over 100 new Banksias planted in the afternoon.

Ray was very grateful for the children’s help and high in his praise for their efforts, congratulating the children after the planting.

“Please remember that your work today is really significant,” he said.

“You’ve created a forest of Banksias, so they won’t be so rare in the future, and the Banksia forest will live much longer than us.

“That’s good for the wildlife too, because Banksias supply good food and shelter to the birds and the gliders.”

St John’s principal Therese Stewart was thrilled that the students were able to have this opportunity.

“The children are the conservationists of the future and the local area is in their hands,” she said.

“Care of their local environment is of the utmost importance and having this hands-on experience to build, plant and nurture will hold them and the environment in good stead for many years to come.”

Top olive oils from ‘top of the Strathbogies’

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY JUST a few years into a new venture Dijana Cane of Strathbogie Flavors - Marraweeney Olive Grove, won not only silver, bronze and gold medals at the recent Australian Olive Awards 2022, but also took out ‘Best in Show’ .

Though a novice in the olive oil industry, Dijana has taken out the top award at the industry’s annual night.

Her Manzanillo (Spanish Olive Oil) gained the gold medal, Best in Class, and Best in Show for its beautiful flavor and purity.

Dijana’s Frantoio Olive Oil (Italian) gained silver awards while her Picual olive oil was awarded bronze.

“I was thrilled to take out the top award this year,” Dijana said.

“I have entered the awards previously and taken out prizes but gaining the ‘Best in Show’ was a real surprise and honor.”

The olive groves, sitting on 46 acres of the Strathbogie plateau have proven to be the ideal place for four different olives to grow and produce top quality fruits.

“I grow a small number of Kalamata olives as well but these are kept mainly for the table,” she said.

Dijana purchased the olive groves in 2018 after searching for an invest-

ment property.

“I originally was looking for an investment cottage to be used as a B&B and fell in love with the Marraweeney place, but along with the cottage came the 46 acres of olive groves,” she said.

“The property found me, more than I found it.

“I knew nothing about growing olives or how to produce olive oils when I purchased the place, but luckily the previous owners stayed on for a while and over the next year instructed me, taught me and helped me with my first production.

“They have come back nearly every year to see how I am going and to view the groves again,” she said.

To maintain the quality of the olive oils produced, Dijana sends her fruit away to a processing plant at Markwood which guarantees everything to be organically produced.

“It’s important to use an established and reputable processor when marketing this product; you have to guarantee the oils are of the highest quality,” she said.

The Marraweeney grove consists of around 1000 trees altogether; 400 Frantoio, 300 Picual and 300 Manzanillo, plus a few Kalamata.

Dijana has maintained the grove as ‘true organic’ and is regularly checked by NAASA to ensure the standards are

being kept up.

Dijana is what you might say ‘truly in tune with nature’ as well; ‘nature has engulfed me’ was her comment.

She not only produces top quality olive oils, but has a big interest in natural herbs and spices for good health having started her packaged herbs business in Western Australia.

She has carried that part of her business through to her Barjarg home and has increased her interest to produce Blackberry leaf tea.

“There were so many blackberry bushes on this Barjarg property when I arrived that were going out of control, I decided to have a go at making blackberry leaf tea, which has been very successful,” she said.

“By pruning the blackberries back regularly it also helps to keep the growth and spreading of this noxious pest in check,” she said.

“I can guarantee that all my products are organic as I do not use any sprays or pesticides on any of my properties that produce the fruits.”

Advertisements AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette has continued to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks back at some classic advertisements that featured in the newspaper during the 1940s and 1950s.

Many of the older advertisements don’t have addresses or the usual information you’d see in today’s papers.

This is clear on the

‘L. Sullivan Tailor’ advertisement (among many others) that featured in the April 27, 1943 edition.

Sometimes it was just enough to have Binney Street as the address, as seen by the ‘Grocers and Drapers’ advertisement for housewives.

There is also a noticeable difference in the items being advertised.

In the 1946 and 1956 editions, some of the big-sellers were the hot water bags, corsets and ‘new’ cars.

Modern technology started being advertised in the Gazette too, with cameras and radios all visible below.

The special lift out supplement chronicling the region’s history through the pages of the newspaper will be released on October 19, 2022.

Baptist church celebrates THE Euroa Baptist Church (EBC) held a wonderful nostalgic celebration for their 60th year in town on Sunday, September 18.

The church was officially opened in April 1962 by Rev Haley from Shepparton and a ribbon was cut by Ruby Dowling (deceased).

This gathering was a reuniting for both past and present attendees.

The rainy days in the lead up were challenging but couldn’t dampen spirits; and Sunday morning was largely clear although rain returned by afternoon.

The church, hall and garden were decorated at working bees beforehand.

A profusion of colourful balloons decorated the church and hall; with sourced native flowers from the local district arranged

by Dot Rule.

by Sue Bennett years ago was reerected for the occasion in front of the newly painted baptistry around the wooden cross.

The service commenced with prayer and warm welcome to guests, from current Pastor John Oring to a filled church, including guest speaker from the Baptist Union of Victoria, several former pastors and members and visitors from other Euroa churches.

Ann Kelly invited two little girls to release two bunches of helium balloons, which duly floated to the ceiling; before presenting some apologies and congratulation messages, one of which came was from Bev Moore.

Her husband Ray, 87, was the first permanent EBC pastor and who performed the first wedding in 1966 of Wilma and Gordon Parker, still members of EBC and the first baptism of Audrey Townsend, also still in

CELEBRATIONS: The Euroa Baptist Church celebrated 60 years in town last week, with guest speakers, an upbeat service and more throughout the day. attendance.

One of the founding members, Jack Hill (and wife Alice), helped build the church and the pine pulpit that Jack built, was brought back into church with a newly engraved plaque attached.

At the celebration service, the full worship team were up front for added voice for seven uplifting songs during the service.

Led by Ann, Sue and Sarah Simmonis, Sue Bennett, Coral Bruce, Glenda Nicholls (on keyboard & vocals), Sue Pickett, (violin & vocals) and the guitar and strong voice of Pastor John, the singing began with an upbeat hymn and a more modern song; “I Will Sing The Wondrous Story,” and “Christ Be The Light”.

Pastor Bob Bruce, who retired in 2018, presented a succinct, excellent account of EBCs’ 60 year history, referring back to the original sermon from Acts 2.

Elders Euroa cattle sale report LOOMING rain systems and ongoing wet conditions saw a reduced yarding of 400 steers, 300 heifers and 100x100 cows and calves at the cattle sale last Wednesday.

Cattle presented in winter condition, however weights, were pleasing as most start to show signs of gains from early spring feed.

Across the board there was a very strong market, with Angus steers either side of 400 worked out to around six dollars per kilogram.

Then as weights came down the calculator was

overlooked and people begun operating to a dollars per head budget.

Buyer support came from local surrounds, Murrindindi area, North East Victoria, Goulburn Valley and a few bigger orders destined for NSW. The next sale at Euroa will be on November 2.

Show and Shine prize winners EARLY data from the “Retreat to the Streets” for the 2022 Euroa Show and Shine indicates that the event was, for the most part, highly successful.

Entrance gates were closed mid-morning after Australian National Show and Shine area managers advised that all streets were full.

Some display vehicles were able to be diverted to the Area 5 park, near the bowling club.

It was apparent, however, that more show vehicles arrived than could be accommodated in the street areas.

A total of around 8000 people were estimated to attend, which included many family groups with children.

Data sampling indicates

that about 86 per cent of these came from outside of the Strathbogie Shire area.

Around 800 vehicles attended the event.

The comprehensive list of prize winners will be covered on the Show and Shine website when calculated.

Veteran shooters win first two championships THE North Eastern Zone Towers Championship was the first event held at the Euroa Clay Target Club’s competition shoot on Sunday, November 9.

This event is a challenging one as the targets are thrown from a platform some nine metres above the shooters head and are hurled over 70 metres before landing.

Just one competitor, veteran John King managed to hit all 25 targets and so won this event outright.

The second event, the 20t Double Barrel Gift also was won by veteran Rob Stackhouse who outshot Alexandra’s Geoff McClure in the final Shoot-off scoring 29/29.

The following event, the Single Barrel Gift was won by the Corowa club President, Royce Wojtowyez with the only 20/20 and the final event, the Pointscore Gift went to Mansfield Shooter Darren Clark.

Next Saturday the men are playing Stableford.

The Lewis Family semifinals are Wishart against Roper and McIntosh against Bell. These matches will be hotly contested.

Twilight is now underway Fridays, and much work is being done in readiness for the Power Industry Championships to be played over three days from the 28 to the 30 October in what will be a huge event for the club bringing many visitors to town.

EUROA GOLF CLUB THE Euroa Golf course had dried out sufficiently by last Tuesday to allow the Euroa Golf Club to hold its annual Euroa Women’s Challenge Bowl.

Thirty-four women from local clubs as well as a strong contingent from Leongatha Golf Club enjoyed the sunny weather to compete in the team stableford event sponsored by Simon and Mandy Edwards.

Euroa home teams hadn’t been successful in winning their home Bowl since 2011 until Tuesday when a team consisting of Robin Lied, Gail Allen and Annette Smith successfully brought the trophy back home.

Some 42 players competed for the October Monthly Medals sponsored by Drummond Golf. Melissa Eddy won the Ladies while Laurie McMartin Net 70 took out the Men’s. Dee McMartin won division two in the Ladies and balls down the line went to Annette Smith and Lorraine Ellis.

Lorraine had a good day winning the putting, a drive and pitch and nearest the pin on 18.

Melissa Eddy also collecting a nearest the pin.

In the Men’s event, Glen McMartin was only one shot behind his brother on 71, Roper and Robinson both on 74 with McIntosh, Ritchie and Burton on 75.

Nearest the pins went to Gilbert on five, Johnson on eight, Robinson on 12 and Glen McMartin on 18.

Cam Roper was on target with two drive and pitches and the McMartin’s collected one each.

EUROA WOMEN’S CHALLENGE BOWL CHAMPIONS: For the first time in 11 years a Euroa team has brought home the Euroa Women’s Challenge Bowl trophy, with Robin Lied, Gail Allen and Annette Smith beaming with success.

Due to the forecast of so much expected rain, next week’s championship round has been cancelled, the course won’t be able to be mowed.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB 12 JUNIORS took to the course for the second round of the junior six hole club championships on Saturday.

Once again it was Lachy O’Brien coming in the with the low score of the day of 28 off the stick, giving him the scratch win.

Owen Smith was second and Frankie Eagles came in third.

Max Harding won the handicap with Rayden Hannigan second and Kevin Traynor coming in third place.

Kevin’s magnificent drive on the seventh earned him the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza voucher this week.

Nine kids are in the mix so far, having played two of the three rounds required to be eligible.

There’s two rounds to go, so hopefully a few more players will qualify - remember,

it’s the best three scores from the four rounds that count.

Lachy O’Brien is currently leading the way from Max Harding and Owen Smith, while Kevin Traynor is leading the handicap followed by Rayden Hannigan and Bob Taylor White.

Round three next week so hope to see a good roll-up of juniors.

A couple of our “older” Juniors - Hudson Black, Lindsay Smith and Campbell Smith (emergency), have teamed up with players from Hidden Valley to form a Junior Pennant team.

They played Ballarat District at Hidden Valley and came out with a tied match overall which was a great result and a great experience for the boys.

Saturday afternoon saw four men and two ladies play a stableford round off the short tees.

It was heavy going as the course was sprayed earlier in the week which meant it couldn’t be cut.

We played the front nine twice and Lyn C claimed the winner’s voucher with 37

points, two ahead of runnerup, Mark Hannigan.

Tim Batten was a few further back and received a ball in the ball comp.

Mark hit a good shot into the seventh for the D & P ball but the NTP ball remained with the club.

Dale Smith won yet another Avenel Meats meat tray, leaving us all to ponder how he does it. Pure luck of course.

Friday’s twilight golf was well attended again and Shane Black continued his good form, scoring 18 points to collect the “cash” in a countback from Ollie Aitken.

Grant Eagles made an impact on his return, scoring 16 points to claim a ball, again decided by countback, Tim Batten being the unlucky one.

Presentation evening will be on Saturday the 22nd.

Saturday golf will continue as long as there is enough interest - the course will be fantastic after it’s cut so get out there and enjoy it.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE sunshine bought the Nagambie members out with 37 players teeing it up for a stableford event, the course had dried out sufficiently for some good scores to be posted but the rough being long made it rather difficult for others.

Paul Cox was the win-

ning golfer compiling a well crafted 37 points to win by three, Cox has taken a liking to the Nagambie course and this has shown in his result.

Runner up went to Graeme Galvin, crunching his way around as usual.

Galvin’s length was on display with him completing his day with 34 points.

Rounding out the top three was Dave Fullager featuring in the top end of results once again, this time being nutted in a countback to finish third on 34 points.

Paul Cox was the only nearest the pin recipient on the day claiming both the 13th and 16th with some fantastic iron play.

Next week’s golf at Nagambie will be a stroke event as well as the gold medal play off for the twelve medallists from throughout the season, on office duty is J. Ezard and in the bar J. Lodding.

CRICKET HISTORY CRICKET ON THIS DAY 1949: In A grade the Diggers front line spinner Cliff Halsall snared seven victims for only 34 runs at Violet Town against the locals in nine overs.

In B grade Jim Mackay of Strathbogie Two had a day out with the ball against Euroa Juniors. His nine wickets for 24 runs had them all out for 72 runs.

2005: Ruffy batsman Marcus Hill scored an even century against Longwood on his home ground, Maygar Park.

His innings included 10 fours and a six and allowed Ruffy to reach 6/269.

While at Merton the home town boy Drew Stevens limited the Alexandra batsmen to 152 with his tight swinging deliveries by taking 6/38 of 20 overs.

Euroa tennis tournament kicks off THIS year Euroa has recruited well with several new players and the return of a few others.

In total we have fielded seven teams, five in division A and two in division B. In division A, Marlene Hanrahan’s Moglonemby team played Longwood, who were crushed by injury to captain Brent Moore and Rod Andrews, so Bob Furphy stepped in and along with Bede Redfern and Jacob Tarran did a great job against a strong Moglonemby.

Grant Davey the new gun recruit for Mogs, was the only one to win all three sets.

Jacob Tarran for Longwood also made a strong contribution losing one set in a tie breaker.

It was back and forward all day between these teams with Longwood easing ahead despite winning less sets by six games.

Euroa Lawn played Avenel Red, with Row Ellis and her team hoping

for a better season.

They got off to a cracking start with Row and Melinda Creevey winning eight-six whilst Caid Miller and Barry Fischer won in a tie breaker. Euroa won the next two sets comfortably then had a run of three losing tie breakers and dropped all the mixed.

Despite only winning four sets, Euroa held on to win by three games.

Gooram played Terip Terip at Terip who were runners up last year.

Captain Chris Ellis and Julie Harrington burst out of the blocks with an eight-five over Francis Lawrence and Sally Kubeil whilst Mark Borthwick and Josh Higgins won eightnil.

Kim Flack and Chris won eightfive.

The men lost a couple of close games whilst the ladies soldiered on winning all theirs.

With a couple of strong wins in

the mixed, Gooram went on to a 20 game win.

St Pauls led by Jake Hill went up the hill to Strathbogie (last year’s premiers).

Faye Mollison and Rosie Cameron came up against a returning emergency for Strathbogie in Sarah Tearnes and Mayra Walsh who kicked it off with a comfortable win.

Strathbogie have been wracked with injury, defection, and overseas travel so far this year but managed to win a tight men’s set with Marcello Mercuri and Marco Carafa over Scott Meehan and Scott Watson.

Lily Meehan and Faye got the team back on track with an eightfour followed by Scott Meehan and Jake with a strong eight-one.

Jake led the way winning all three sets and ensuring victory for St Pauls by nine games.

In division B Euroa played Avenel at Avenel with Indie Midren-Nicel making her debut, narrowly losing

with Kalarni Anderson.

Captain Craig Durkin and John Anderson fought back with an eight-six.

Craig and Indie had a great win in the mixed eight-six but Avenel were a bit strong winning by 27 games.

Caroline Keenan launched her well recruited team with new players, Jim and Suzie Gall, Jason Goss and Greg Rowe and with Kelly and Ella Hill filling in, got off to a great start winning the first four sets with Jim Gall and Greg Rowe having the best result with an eight-one.

Jim also combined with Jason Goss for an eight-three.

Caroline stepped in for Suzie Gall to combine with Greg for a muchneeded mixed win eight-three.

Greg Rowe winning all three sets and 16 up on the day ensured the win by 21 games.

All in all Euroa is placed well to have a strong season across all their teams this year.

THE Euroa Bowls Club with the Avenel Club played a pennant match at Shepparton Park last Saturday to get their eyes in for the coming competition pennant starting in all division ro the theSaturday teams.

Euroa division one will be home to Shepparton Golf, division four away at Seymour and division six away at Shepparton Golf.

The lower divisions will be only playing 21 ends this season but the higher ones will still have 25 to play, good luck to all for a successful season.

The Kevin Lomer Memorial Mixed Fours will be played at Euroa next Sunday, October 16 starting at 1pm and all to wear club uniforms.

Midweek bowlers defeated by Shepparton Park

By AUDREY MCINTOSH AFTER not being able to play for the first match on September 27 because of rain, last Tuesday again divison three played the second match at Shepparton Park and lost to the home side 54/80.

Euroa local designs Pride guernsey for AFLW side A DESIGN by former Euroa resident Megan Furphy has been selected for the Carlton Football Club AFLW side’s Pride Round guernsey.

Earlier this year, members and fans were able to submit designs for the club’s sixth instalment of the Pride guernsey.

Entries were then shown to the AFLW leadership group, alongside representatives of the Carlton Pride Group, with Ms Furphy’s design eventually selected as the winner.

The Blues will wear the guernsey on Friday night against Richmond in their Pride Round fixture at IKON Park.

The theme of this season’s Carlton guernsey centres around a celebration of community and connection, with the wider AFLW theme embracing the roles that ambassadors and allies play in the LGBTQIA+ community.

“As a teacher, I’m really passionate about supporting our LGBTQIA+ community,”

Ms Furphy said.

“I’m also a big fan of sport, particularly women’s sport.

“When I was thinking about Pride, I was thinking about community.”

Megan’s grandmother, long-term Euroa local Marjorie Furphy, was extremely proud of her achievements.

“I’m so pleased,” Marjorie said.

“I have 14 grandchildren so whenever you see them do something like this you get excited.

“I’m 93 years old now and get so proud of everything they do.”

Carlton’s player ambassador, defender Mua Laloifi spoke about the excitement over the guernsey.

“We opened up the guernsey design to our members and fans because we really value their input and want their voices to be heard,” she said.

“We’re all looking forward to putting on Megan’s design on Friday night for our first ever Pride game at IKON Park.”

A TEAM EVENT: Junior and senior players alike gained valuable knowledge from the workshop with the Melbourne Renegades, and hope to apply that to their upcoming season of cricket.

Melbourne Renegades come to town ON Tuesday, October 4, the Euroa Cricket Club had the honor of hosting some of the Melbourne Renegades cricket players at the Memorial Oval.

Arriving with the intent to coach a stellar training session and take the Euroa players through some elitelevel drills, unfortunately the weather did not permit,

and the players were restricted to verbal advice.

The time was not wasted, however, junior and senior players spending some valuable time chatting with the Renegades and taking on board some top-tips and tricks of the game, ready to take on the summer competition just as soon as the rain allows the pitches to dry.

Euroa Cricket Club players are excited to get on field for the 2022 summer season, now with a thesaurus of fresh game tactics in mind from the Renegades, Euroa players are aiming for the skies.

Due to the unprecedented wet weather, some changes have been made to the season schedule:

Under 14s & 16s season will start a week later Under16s will start Friday, October 21 with a T20 game Under14s will start Saturday, October 22 with 25 over one day game Under 12s will start Friday, October 21 Under 10s will start Wednesday November 2nd

This section of the evening also saw the coveted Best Club-Person award for season 2022 - this went to the Club Executive Committee of Scott Watson, Andrew Hill and Lindy Meehan for their tireless leadership and efforts in and around the club. The Basil Bruce ‘Spirit of Magpie’ award was awarded to Scott and Stasia Trotter for their ongoing support of the club is so many ways.

A run-down of the Reserves football season was given by coach Linc McKernan with some entertaining comments (even some more entertaining trophy recipients) - hopefully in 2023 Linc can take the boys to the Grand Final.

EFNC wraps up 2022 season with awards ON Friday, October 7 the Euroa Football Netball Club wrapped up the 2022 season with our presentation night. President Scott Watson welcomed all to the evening and outlined the format for the night.

With over 120 in attendance and still quite a number of apologies received from players, their families, supporters, members and sponsors the club is in great shape for the 2023 year.

Will Hayes to return to the nest for 2023 football season FOLLOWING a tumultuous finals season for the Euroa Magpies and a close premiership defeat against the mighty Echuca, Euroa are looking to up the ante going into the 2023 football season.

The Magpies might have found their magic, with hometown hero Will Hayes signing on to return to Euroa Football Netball Club next year.

Making two appearances for Carlton Football Club after being picked up in the mid-season rookie draft, Hayes has been delisted following a two match ban for dangerous tackling.

With a career-high disposals of 23, Hayes returns to the nest with a plethora of experience with 13 AFL games to his name and a wealth of experience at VFL level, including a 2018 premiership, best-and-fairest and Team of the Year nomination at Foostcray.

Euroa seniors coach Scott Rowan is feeling positive with the inclusion of Hayes.

“We’re very excited to have him back,” Rowan said.

“He had a crack at AFL last

year and would’ve been with us last year, but got that opportunity.

Rowan looks forward to using Hayes’ elite-level expertise and experience for the club’s younger playing groups.

“We’ve got a lot of good kids coming through the ranks at Euroa and he’s pretty keen to get back and work with them,” Rowan said.

With brother JD Hayes taking on more involvement with family stable Lindsay Park next year, the Euroa Magpies are looking forward to Will’s inclusion and commitment to being on field every week, bolstering and already impressive line up.

“He’s (Will) coming in as a full-time footballer, we know him being available on Saturdays won’t last forever, but certainly next season we’re expecting him to be available every weekend.”

With the taste of success on the tip of their tongues and a fire in their bellies, Euroa are looking to do whatever it takes to get back to the big dance next year, and this time bring home that illusive premiership flag.

Celebrating 34 years of Spring The Bright Spring Festival is celebrating its 34th year (let’s forget about 2020). Over the years there have been over 100 volunteers on the committee putting together the festival each year and putting smiles on everyone’s face, thank you. This festival would not be possible with out the support of our sponsors.

Spring Open Gardens Appreciate the beauty of 12 wonderful gardens presented by keen gardeners in Bright and surrounds. Spring is a glorious time to visit Bright – fresh green leaves return to the trees, bulbs burst into life in spectacular colour, and buds and blooms enchant the eyes in every direction. See open gardens in Bright, Wandiligong, Harrietville, Myrtleford and Dederang.

Alpine Perennials Nursery are proud to sponsor the 2022 Spring Festival Open Gardens!

With over 30 years of horticultural experience, Craig and Julie Hulbert bring extensive nursery and landscaping expertise to the Alpine region. Located in Harrietville, we are specialist growers of beautiful flowering plants and shrubs. Since opening in September 2021, the nursery has experienced great support from locals and tourists alike.

The majority of our plants are grown onsite and are already acclimatised to the unique conditions of the Alpine region. A large range of plants grown in the nursery are also suitable for Melbourne and surrounding areas.

Alpine Perennials Nursery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm and is located at 1828 Great Alpine Road, Harrietville. We are a pet friendly nursery and as we are just across the way from the Rail Trail, cyclists are welcome too!

Visits outside of our standard times are by appointment only.

This much loved garden allows you to wander through its collection of traditional and cottage plants and trees. An assortment of unusual garden art enhances the nature of the garden, with the house sitting harmoniously within the ½ acre site allowing you to wander through.

10am to 3:30pm Entry : $4 going to the CFA Norala is one of Victoria’s notable gardens, established and maintained by the late Miss Norma McGowan and her friend Miss Alma Stanhope and over the last 12 years by the current owners. Feel the passion for creating gardens for enjoyment, rambling woodlands, open lawns and shade trees. The garden first appeared as one of Australia’s icons in the 1996 book by well-known garden writer Holly Forsyth ( The Constant Gardener TM); Garden Lovers Guide to Australia and featured many years ago on Gardening Australia. The garden features a large variety of camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and a substantial tree canopy. In winter the hellebores provide a carpet of muted colours whilst in spring the camellias light up the garden from every angle, whilst regular bulb planting provides understory colour.

31 plus 1st November - 10am to 4pm Entry : $5 going to Local family in need. Devonshire tea available, served in the garden at $5.00.

Our garden began from nothing and has been lovingly developed by the whole family. Our feature is a dry creek bed which runs through our garden. We have added a number of quirky features over the past few years. We now have 180 roses, quite a few which we have rescued from other gardens. We have also installed a fire sprinkler system on our home which may be of interest to some.

WORKSHOPS Using Australian Native Plants in your garden - new releases and old favourites Buffalo River Nursery, 9 Merriang South Rd, Myrtleford When: Sunday 23 and Sunday 30 October 2pm Register: bookings not required This workshop will involve a tour of the garden looking at a big range of native plants, their growing conditions and their maintenance. The use of indigenous plants, old and popular varieties suited to the local environment as well as some good newly released plants with some plants to avoid.

11. Shady Brook Cottages 20 Mountain View Walk, Harrietville Open: Daily October 22 to 1st

November - 10am to 4pm Entry : $5 going to Local

Community Groups in Harrietville Set on 14 acres, of which 8 are landscaped and planted with thousands of spring flowering shrubs such as camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and many others, including Australian natives. There are also large plantings of rare and unusual conifers, as well as rare and exotic trees and shrubs. Shady Brook is set on the Ovens river with natural bush and walking tracks that take you up to spectacular views of Mt Feathertop range. There is a large and relaxingwater feature and walks along the river. Allow at least an hour to appreciate the garden.

6. The Gold Assayer’s Garden

This historic property and land previously featured an entrance to Reform gold mine in the 1800’s.

Thoughtfully landscaped to balance old world charm with naturalistic planting - designed to attract birds, bees and insects. The topsoil has been rejuvenated with organic compost, mulch and planting of indigenous plants, trees, flowers, fruit and nut trees, and vegetables grown for enjoyment of humans and kangaroos!

plus 1st November - 9:30am to 4:30pm Entry : $2 going to Buffalo River Fire Brigade The garden is about 30 years old and contains mainly natives. Plants include callistemon, grevillea, banksia, waratah, ferns kangaroo paws and eremophila. Also a few deciduous trees and exotics.

Several indigenous plants grow along the river. We run a nursery with heaps of native and nonnative plants for sale.
