By DIANE GRANT KEITH Irwin, 25-year resident of the small hamlet of Kirwan’s Bridge has expressed his concerns about the most recent closure of the town’s bridge and how it will affect residents of the area.

It was a touch of deja vu for Keith as he was one of the original 2011 Kirwan’s bridge campaigners to save the historic construction back then when it needed repairs.

Many years ago the old bridge closed for some years and those who lived in the little hamlet had to use the

Kirwan’s Bridge g residents rallyy over access closure concerns 16km dirt road route into Nagambie.

Eventually the bridge was saved by a reconstruction project that allowed residents, other bridge users and holiday makers who lived in the little township to once again use the shorter 6km route to the township of Nagambie.

“An engineer (at the time) assisted the residents and shire to rebuild or restore it for around $2,000,000,” Mr Irwin said.Â

Last week Mr Irwin took out his previously used (2011) ‘Save the bridge’ signs for a rally held recently, following the announcement Kirwan’s Bridge would not reopen in the near future and more than 140 people attended to express their concerns.

Some came from the Kirwan’s Bridge (township) residents and holiday homeowners, and some from Murchison, Seymour, Tatura, Whroo, Melbourne and other district areas for the meeting.

“My wife Fran was very ill years ago, and an ambulance was not available from Nagambie, (no resident paramedic then in Nagambie), Murchison, Shepparton or Seymour,” he said.

“So one had to be brought over from Heathcote to assist her.”

This story relates to how important the bridge was then and still is to the township for faster and safer travel and emergency assistance.

Because of recent horrific floods in October 2022, the bridge is once again closed and it looks like it could be many years before any solution is raised to help the residents again use their bridge for easier transit.

This bridge closure has a huge impact on the locals and especially the elderly folk who travel into Nagambie for doctor’s appointments, fuel and food supplies.

Publisher acquires NSW Central West newspapers IN another show of confidence it sees in the future of community newspapers, Provincial Press Group (PPG), owner/publisher of The Euroa Gazette, is purchasing seven newspapers from Australian Community Media (ACM) serving New South Wales Central West and Hilltops regional and rural communities.

Publications to change hands include paid weekly mastheads Parkes Champion-Post, Forbes Advocate, Canowindra News, The Grenfell Record, Cowra Guardian, Young Witness

and Boorowa News.

PPG managing director Hartley Higgins said the acquisition of the mastheads will grow PPG’s North East Media’s division current 16 newspaper and magazine titles produced in Wangaratta, and follows the purchase last June of Monaro Media Group and its Cooma-based publications.

Mr Higgins said PPG, as an independent family publisher operating in Wangaratta for over 100 years, will form a new entity - Regional Media Corp - to publish the titles.

Regional Media Corp CEO Edward Higgins said his company was pleased to be the future custodian of the regions’ long-standing newspapers that had served their respective communities for many years.

“We are impressed with the regions’ progressive municipalities and look forward to engaging with all communities covered to deliver an effective local print and digital media service,” he said.

The purchase of the mastheads follows an important Australian Research Council

funded Deakin University report issued last week into the future of Australia’s country press.

Edward Higgins said the report highlighted the need for a better understanding of the role regional and rural papers play in the community.

“The report recognises regional and rural papers as essential services to the communities they serve,” he said.

“This important distinction is underpinned by a commitment to hyperlocal public interest journalism our newspapers are proud to provide.”

CFA out in full force for Good Friday Appeal

By DARREN CHAITMAN YOUNG and old CFA volunteers were out in full force on Friday, with an estimated 60 volunteers collecting donations from the community for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Six fire trucks, each responsible for a different area of Euroa, transported kids around the town to collect donations.

The Euroa Gazette briefly rode along in the Creighton’s Creek truck, which was driven by husband-and-wife team Mark and Jody Delahey.

The day was overcast and rain was due any minute, but Mrs Delahey was not too concerned, saying collecting for the Good Friday Appeal is one of those things you do rain, hail or shine.

The kids were not too concerned by the threat of rain either, yelling out “happy Easter” to community members from atop the truck and eagerly running from house to house to collect donations.

“Just walk, Tyler,” Mr Delahey yelled to one of the boys.

But as soon as Mr and Mrs Delahey were not looking, Tyler continued running.

“There’s a bit of healthy competition between the different trucks, to see who can collect the most,” Mr Delahey explained.

Euroa families were delighted to see fire trucks cruising through their streets with sirens sounding.

“It’s a fire truck,” a little girl named Jessica called out excitedly as the Creighton Creek’s truck pulled up outside her house.

The CFA has collected for the Good Friday Appeal in Euroa since the mid90s, having taken over the initiative from a previous organiser, local lady Grace McFarlane.

Upgrades allow access to power in emergencies SIX of Strathbogie Shire Council’s facilities were upgraded with cabling to allow portable trailermounted generators to be connected to buildings during emergencies.

The upgrades will ensure key sites in Avenel, Euroa, Longwood, Nagambie and Violet Town are able to be utilised as Emergency Relief Centres (ERCs) with access to power in disaster situations.

Mayor Laura Binks said it is important council has multiple potential sites identified that can be set up as ERCs at short notice.

the public during the October flood event,” Cr Binks said.

“This was a perfect example of how quickly our community can be subjected to an emergency situation and the real need for ERCs during these times.”

Cr Binks explained what ERCs are and how the centres are able to support the community in emergencies.

“An ERC is not a refuge or recovery centre, rather, it is a place where affected individuals can go to get emergency information, reconnect with their community, register their details, and access relief support services to assist with their immediate needs.”

The recent rally for a Kirwan’s Bridge and district supporter’s community meeting was held at the angling club at Kirwan’s Bridge for people of the Kirwan’s Bridge small hamlet to discuss proposed community actions, ideas and to form a working group to fight for the re-opening of the old historic bridge.

Highlighting the need for the bridge to be reopened was an incident during the rally.

A man, Henry Moss, was hit by a falling awning off the angling club building.

It took around 30 minutes for a Nagambie ambulance to attend to him as paramedics had to go the long way round.

“The school bus, ambulance, fire brigade cannot access the bridge now,” he said.

“If a fire occurred on the Nagambie side of the bridge the fire truck would have to go all the way around to Nagambie and come in the other way.

“It could take half an hour or more, and most of the brigade personnel live in the Bridge town.” Â At the rally the ‘Open Kirwan’s Bridge Action Group’ called on the community to support their efforts to re-open the bridge and local communities around the district to help make their voices heard on this issue.

Spokesperson for the group, Robyn Taylor, said this meeting is an opportunity for us to come together, share ideas, and take action to ensure that our community needs are met.

Mr Irwin said Kirwan’s Bridge (the township) is larger than the town of Longwood, but has no shop or pub like Longwood does.

“It does have a CFA fire brigade team and vehicle and an angling club building which is used for anglers and sometimes is used as a community hall,” he said.

Mr Irwin told the Gazette that “I was the last person to cross the bridge in October during the floods”.

“The water did not lap over the bridge but was touching under it,” he said.

The dirt road residents have to use is 11km into the main Heathcote Road then into Nagambie which means a trip of around 16km each way.

Mr Irwin and Kirwan’s Bridge residents, and interested parties, would like to see our local Strathbogie Shire councillors, along with shire engineers, meet with residents to discuss face-toface, the problems with those who live there, or who have a holiday home there.

Melissa Seymour is the new Euroa Health CEO EUROA Health Inc (EHI) announced last week that current interim CEO Melissa Seymour has been formally appointed to the position.

The previously announced CEO appointment did not proceed, so the board moved quickly to secure Ms Seymour to the CEO position.

Since January this year, Ms Seymour has taken lead of the accreditation required by Euroa Health through the governing bodies in the aged care, NDIS and acute hospital services without which we could not operate these services and is already a well established and well known member of the staff.

Ms Seymour’s connection to Euroa goes way back to her childhood visiting her Nanna, Maisie Nelson of Templeton St and later Railway St in Euroa.

Her fond memories of shopping down Binney Street during school holiday stays in Euroa, and being recognised as her father, Vic Nelson’s daughter, at the local butcher shop where Vic did his apprenticeship, before marrying Melissa’s mum, Janeece Gallagher and moving to Shepparton.

Euroa was also where Ms Seymour started early employment as a junior waitress at the iconic Haygun’s and Taffy’s restaurants under the experienced guidance of Jill and Bernard Hayes.

An experienced leader and manager, Ms Seymour spent two recent years as the program facilitator of the Fairley Leadership Program, and nine years before that as the Rural Clinical School manager of the University of Melbourne, based in Shepparton and holding a Bachelor of Health Sciences, and public relations qualifications.

Ms Seymour has implemented many strategic actions in her two years for Euroa Health as innovation and special project manager, including returning x-ray and ultrasound services back to the town, leading innovation across the whole organisation and bringing 21st century technology to the facility through electronic meal ordering, electronic medication management and introducing a scientific based workplace wellbeing program, as well as various other system and process improvements.

Traveller charged after Euroa shoplifting spree

By DARREN CHAITMAN A 27-YEAR-OLD man visiting from England has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing $215 worth of items from Burton’s SUPA IGA and Saville Home Hardware in Euroa last Wednesday.

His companion at the time of the incident, a 38-year-old Englishman who now lives in Melbourne, has been cautioned by police.

The younger man allegedly stole $95 worth of items from Burton’s SUPA IGA, including a slab of Carlton Draught beers, chicken kebabs, two jars of mint sauce, chili sauce, talcum pow-

der and hair-combs.

He allegedly stole a $120 pair of Blundstone work boots from Saville Home Hardware.

Burton’s SUPA IGA owner Tim Burton first became aware of the alleged theft when the store’s liquor manager informed him a pallet of Carlton Draught was missing from a pallet jack.

Mr Burton reviewed the store’s CCTV footage and called police after watching the man allegedly steal the slab and chicken kebabs.

Shortly after police were notified, the man and his companion returned to the store wearing different clothes including a shiny new pair of Blundstones.

“He was wearing a pair of Blundstone boots, I thought, ‘those look new’ - then later on the police told me they’d stolen those as well,” Mr Burton said.

While the men were allegedly stealing more items, Mr Burton called the police again, who promptly returned to the scene, waited for the men to exit the store and arrested them in the store parking lot.

Saville Home Hardware owner Ian Trotter, who had been driving past the IGA, arrived at the scene during the arrest, pointed at the man’s boots and said, “they’re mine”.

Mr Trotter said he had already been aware of the alleged

theft, having found an old pair of shoes in his store which were revealed by CCTV footage to have been swapped by the young Englishman for a new pair of Blundstones.

The men were taken to Euroa Police Station for questioning, where they seemed “fairly embarrassed” according to Acting Sergeant Murray Moser, who was one of the arresting officers.

The men told police they were passing through town as they drove north towards New South Wales.

The younger man is on bail and will face Benalla Magistrate’s Court at a later date.

The exciting new arts space will launch this July with a series of rotating exhibitions, expected to last about four-five weeks each, in various locations throughout the Shire.

The aim of the travelling exhibition space is to promote professional and emerging artists and makers, providing opportunities for regional and remote communities in the Shire to create, experience and engage with arts and culture.

New flush accessible toilet completed at Friendlies Oval AN accessible, inclusive toilet at the Friendlies Oval in Euroa has been completed.

The project has faced a series of delays and Strathbogie Shire Council is pleased to announce these were overcome and the facility can now be used.

Shire Mayor Laura Binks said the recent floods in October last year had delayed the project.

“Our contractors were also suffering as a result of the floods and we continued to have wet weather during November which delayed

things even further,” she said.

“We are so pleased this project has come to fruition.

“Council knows this is a well-loved and utilised facility during the cricket season and we hope the facility makes the amenities more comfortable.”

The project was completed with Strathbogie Shire Council funding of $60,000 for the design and construction of the new accessible toilet.

Friendlies Oval committee members Peter Morley and Rob Asquith said the toilet

added to the grounds’ facilities which had been undergoing continuous improvements over recent years.

“The grounds are admired by people who play here,” Mr Morley said.

The oval is being more and more utilised by the community with not just cricket taking place on the grounds.

“We have women’s hockey training and (My Future Academy’s) Kids Spartan.”

Cr Binks said the oval has proven to be a fantastic venue to improve health and wellbeing and foster social connections.

Kylie Ladd to share her new book KYLIE Ladd will be visiting four of Goulburn Valley Libraries’ branches later this month to share her recently published book I’ll Leave You With This.

Planned burns ongoing across shire WITH fire restrictions across the Strathbogie Shire and calm autumn conditions, hundreds of private resident burn-offs, agricultural burns and planned burns are expected to take place over the coming weeks.

While current conditions are ideal for burning, weather patterns may cause smoke to linger over parts of the state overnight and through to early morning.

FFMVic Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman said our climate is changing and that means finding the right days for safe and effective planned burning is also changing.

Planned burns are a critical part of a state-wide bushfire risk management program.

“FFMVic’s number one priority is to protect life, property and the environment from the risk of bushfires, and that is what we will continue to do,” he said.

Interest rate pause having an impact

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY LAST week the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) made the decision to pause interest rates.

This comes after the past few months of 10 interest rate rises hitting homebuyers, businesses, investors and renters dearly.

After the sharpest interest rate hikes in decades this year, there are signs that inflation is now stabilising or declining.

The RBA’s aim for the interest rate rises was to slow the inflation rate down - as it believed Australians were heading into another recession.

At the start of 2023, Australia saw the potential signs of a slowdown in employment as the rate and hours worked decreased while underemployment increased.

But the impacts of the rate rises were felt more across the housing and real estate industry.

Local real estate agent John Stringer of Nutrien Ag Euroa, said the rate rises had already seen an impact on first home buyers, homebuyers in general, and sellers.

“When the interest rates were low, first home buyers were given the opportunity to buy houses with less deposit,” Mr Stringer said.

“Now the interest rates have surged they have found a huge jump in repayments on their mortgages.

“First home buyers were able to borrow the maximum amount at low interest, but

now there will be a big impact for them.

“This impact will affect home buyers and sellers across the state.

“You can expect to see a lot of homes going up for auction - mortgagee sales as homeowners with huge mortgages to pay off will not be able to keep up the payments.”

Mr Stringer said house prices have also been affected along with sales.

“Where there had been a surge in prices, that surge and higher, good prices for homes has flattened out,” he said.

And some have come down in estimated sale prices - not like during the pandemic when house prices went up considerably.

“Where home sellers were expecting top prices, this will not happen now and it is expected to take a little longer for homes to sell as buyers may have to find suitable finance,” Mr Stringer said.

Amid a difficult economic climate, the building and construction industry welcomed the Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to pause interest rates.

“Interest rate rises coupled with rising inflation have forced building and construction activity and new homes sales to slow sharply over the last few months,” Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said.

“A strong building industry is the foundation of a strong economy.

“The close interdependence between the health of the construction industry and the economy’s fate is clear to see in the current environment.

“The RBA has rightfully recognised the negative impacts of rapidly rising interest rates on accelerating rental prices and construction activity.

“There is now an opportunity for government to step up with bold fiscal policy decisions to complete the job of bringing inflation back into line.

“We hope governments do not miss this moment for reform in upcoming state and federal budgets.

“There is no silver bullet; this will take a concerted effort by all levels of government working in collaboration with industry.”

Peak industry body the National Retail Association (NRA) has also welcomed the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBAs) decision to pause rate increases this month, allowing retailers to sleep easier.

NRA CEO Greg Griffith said the cash rate currently sits at 3.6 per cent after a debilitating 10 consecutive rate hikes that put several small retailers at risk of closing down.

“The cost-of-living crunch has weighed heavily on consumer sentiment, and the industry is thankful the RBA has put down its hammer long enough to assess the full impact of its monetary policy,” Mr Griffith said.

“Victorians can also sign up for planned burn notifications to prepare for any impact on their health or activities.”

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan urged Victorians to conduct private burn-offs safely and to register their burn-off as this ensures if someone reports smoke, the incident can be monitored and acknowledged early.

“If possible, landowners should also notify their neighbours and others nearby who may be sensitive to smoke so they can take necessary precautions,” he said.

No guarantee for Euroa Health funding MAY’S state budget will set out the government’s priorities for the coming fouryear term, with Victorians being warned to brace for significant cuts in the face of state debt now rocketing to over $110b - that’s a debt of about $15,000 per adult.

As interest rates increase, this impacts the state budget in the same way it impacts your household budget.

Victorians are now being slugged $10m a day in interest to service Labor’s debt.

Daniel Andrews is pouring billions into city projects - such as the $34.5b Cheltenham to Box Hill rail line - while regional Victorians are left waiting for basic infrastructure and services, including driveable roads and upgraded healthcare with more health professionals.

Regional Victoria cannot continue to be neglected by Labor, which will continue funding Daniel Andrews’ pet projects.

In the face of skyrocketing energy bills

and an increased cost of living, this budget must deliver financial relief for Victorians.

The Andrews Labor Government’s attempt to revive the SEC will do little to drive down energy prices, and one-off payments are only a band-aid solution.

This budget must deliver recurrent funding for community hospitals to ensure smaller health services can plan for the future and cater to growing populations.

Victoria was once home to more than 40 community hospitals and now there is only a handful left, with Strathbogie Shire the only local government area in Victoria that has no publicly funded hospital.

Despite that, Euroa Health - a community hospital which services the Strathbogie region - is not guaranteed ongoing funding.

This budget must deliver increased and ongoing funding for state-managed roads, and funding for local councils’ road maintenance budgets.

We have seen Labor leave regional councils struggling to balance their budgets after it axed the Country Roads and Bridges Program.

Most importantly, this state budget must be fairer for all Victorians.

Food for thought on burning of forests SIM Ayres put forward an interesting point of view (Gazette, March 29) regarding planned burns in the Strathbogie forests.

As a layman I’ve always questioned the supposed validity of this orchestrated, ferocious, burning off process and Sim seems to have put forward some ideas for us to think about.

Personally, also as a layman, I’ve also always questioned the generally put forward view that First Nations people were avid forest burners?

Indigenous people’s stories are an oral history and so in effect we don’t know a great deal about how they ran the show for 65,000 years before 1788, but perhaps we should endeavour to do so?

Reinvigorating cultural fire in Victoria’s North East CULTURAL fire is used by Traditional Owners to heal country and fulfil their rights and obligations to care for country.

Before colonisation, cultural burning was used for a wide range of purposes, including protecting country, providing habitat for wildlife and the harvesting of resources.

Traditional Owners in Victoria’s north are being supported to conduct cultural burning on country as part of ongoing work towards Aboriginal self-determination.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) Hume deputy chief fire officer, Jarrod Hayse, said four Traditional Owner groups will each receive a grant as part of the cultural fire grants.

The grants support Aboriginal Victorians to care for country through land management and will enhance cultural and environmental values.

Jaithmathang Traditional Ancestral Bloodline Original Owners First Nations Aboriginal Corporation, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Bangerang Aboriginal Corporation and Taungurung Land & Waters Council will be funded to support cultural burning practices on country.

Taungurung Land & Waters Council CEO, Matt Burns, said, “for millennia, the Taungurung people applied wiinj (fire) and associated practices to biik (country)”.

FIRE KNOWLEDGE: Traditional Owners in Victoria’s north are being supported to conduct cultural burning on country as part of ongoing work towards Aboriginal self-determination.

“This has been done in line with our cultural obligations, passed to us from our ancestors to ensure that country is always healthy,” Mr Burns said.

“This grant enables the Taungurung people to lead in the

healing and caring for biik in ways that haven’t been possible since the onset of colonisation.

“It’s important for the livelihoods of all Victorians that the right fire is applied to biik again.”

Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is investing $22.5 million over four years to support Traditional Owner-led cultural land and fire management practices.

Committee returns for 2023 at Probus club

By ELLEN DOYLE EUROA Probus president Fred Jungwirth opened the annual general meeting on Monday, March 27.

He read his very informative and interesting President’s Report for past 12 months, thanking Probus members for their support and the previous Committee of Management for their work in 2022 and for agreeing to take up the positions again

for 2023, as there were no new nominations.

Mr Jungwirth mentioned that like many clubs there has been a decline in Euroa Probus membership.

The committee of management for 2023 remains the same - Fred Jungwirth re-elected as president, Faith Irving (vice president), Stan Reid (secretary), Bernie Walker (treasurer); committee members Sue Marr, Ellen Doyle, Margaret Walker

and Faith Irving.

As there was no guest speaker, Margaret and Bernie Walker prepared an excellent historical photo presentation of a number of shops down Binney Street and businesses which had occupied these premises (photos supplied from Euroa Museum for which we are grateful).

Originally the town was in Burtons Bridge area where there was a creek crossing, then when the railway came through

the commercial area developed both sides of the railway line.

On April 12 members will revert to a lunch meeting which will be held at the Seven Creeks Hotel at 12 noon.

Electric vehicles for farmers: free event on Thursday FARMERS for Climate Action will hold a free event in Euroa on Thursday covering the use of electric vehicles in the regional Australia and on farms.

One of Australia’s first

electric utes will be on-site, as well as an UBCO electric farm bike and other electric vehicles, allowing local residents to see the technology first-hand.

Speakers will include

Bryce Gaton from EV Choice, Ben Lever and Ajaya Haikerwal from Solar Citizens, Russell Klose from Kilowatt cars, Atienne Bakker-Szumer and Charlie Paterson from Farmers for

Climate Action, and local farmers and electric vehicle users.

Presentations will cover how this technology could shape regional Australia and the benefits electric

farm vehicles can offer farmers.

There will also be be a barbecue dinner and a Q&A session for attendees to ask questions.

WWII nurses commemorated

SPECIAL VISITOR: Turkish Consul General Arif Eser Torun will visit the town in the lead up to Anzac Day and will unveil a commemorative memorial plaque at Telegraph Park.

Memorial rock to be unveiled for Dr Charles Ryan APRIL 20 will be a significant date in the ongoing history of the Euroa community.

On that day the Turkish Consul General Arif Eser Torun will visit the town in the lead up to Anzac Day and will unveil a commemorative memorial plaque honuoring Sir Charles Snodgrass Ryan.

The new memorial dedicated to Dr Charles Snodgrass Ryan KBE, CB, CMG, VD, will be a large rock with his picture and will be located at the Tel-

egraph Park.

There will also be a story board telling the history of Sir Charles’ service with the Turkish Army and his service during the Gallipoli campaign as the ADC to the commander of ANZAC forces Lieutenant General William Birdwood (later becoming Field Marshall Birdwood).

The memorial dedication will be starting at 11am at the Telegraph Park and will be followed by refreshments at the Euroa Library 12.30pm to 2pm.

Also expected at the commemoration will be Siobhan Ryan, great-granddaughter of Sir Charles Ryan, Cr Paul Murray representing Strathbogie Shire, members of Friends of Gallipoli Inc, and family representatives of those who served at Gallipoli including Tubb VC and Alex Burton VC. Students from the Euroa and Longwood primary schools will also be in attendance also members of the Euroa RSL sub-branch and local residents.

A PLAQUE unveiling to commemorate the story of war nurses Vivian Bullwinkel and Betty Jeffrey will take place at the Devenish Art Silos will on Saturday, April 22 as part of the Devenish ANZAC Commemorative Service commencing with the march at 10.30am.

Devenish is on the Silo Art Trail where extraordinary images of a WW1 nurse, a modern female military medic and an Australian Light Horseman are featured on huge grain silos.

The memorial plaque was developed by the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre (ANMC) with support and the assistance of the Devenish Silo Art Committee, Benalla Rural City Council and the local community.

The plaque commemorates the bravery and sac-

rifice of Royal Australian Army Nurses who died or were prisoners-of-war in WW2 including Vivian Bullwinkel, sole survivor of the Bangka Island massacre.

On February 12, 1942 ahead of the fall of Singapore to advancing Japanese forces, 65 Australian Army Nurses were evacuated with soldiers and civilians on the SS Vyner Brooke.

Two days later the Vyner Brooke was bombed by Japanese aircraft and sank in the Bangka Strait.

Twelve nurses were killed or lost at sea while 31 came ashore near Muntok on Bangka Island where they were imprisoned by Japanese soldiers.

Vivian Bullwinkel was incarcerated with the nurses who had been captured earlier.

The Australian Army

Nurses were held in prisoner-of-war (POW) camps on Bangka Island and Sumatra where a further eight nurses died.

Betty Jeffrey one of the Australian nurses bravely kept notes during captivity and later published a record of the experience of the POW nurses in her book White Coolies (1954).

On return to Australia Vivian Bullwinkel, Betty Jeffrey, Wilma Oram with other survivors and a group of supportive nurses raised funds to establish a Centre in memory of the nurses who were lost.

Vivian Bullwinkel exemplified resilience and a devotion to duty like no other.

She dedicated her life to nursing and to honouring those killed on Bangka Island.

HONORED: A plaque will be unveiled honoring the nurses who served through World War II at Devenish silos.

Veterans should have their say VETERANS who have suffered depression and other ailments relating to Defence service in all campaigns are being encouraged to make final submissions to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide before it closes on April 28 (one-onone) and October 13 (written submissions).

Steven Baras-Miller is a legal advisor (solicitor) with the Defence and Veterans Legal Service and is currently visiting regional and rural areas of Vic-

toria helping veterans who may need assistance in making submissions to the commission.

Visiting Mansfield RSL subbranch recently Mr BarasMiller said the aim of this legal service is to help in prevention of suicides it is not just for submissions to the Commission.

A similar information session was to be held at Shepparton in the coming weeks but has now been cancelled.

However, Mr Baras-Miller said he is available at any

time to conduct personal interviews either in person, by phone or even zoom or visit an RSL sub-branch and talk to members and families.

He quoted that back in the early 2000’s at least 20 suicides each week were recorded from veterans, particularly from Vietnam campaigns.

“There are still suicides happening from ex-defence personnel, we want this to stop by providing assistance to encourage those affected to come forward and make

submissions to this royal commission before it closes,” Mr Baras-Miller said.

“There are lots of veterans out there around the Strathbogie Shire district who are a little shy in talking about their experiences, suffering from social anxiety issues and pull back from coming forward with information.

“Defence & Veterans Legal Service is a free and confidential advisory service available to all veterans and families and our aim is to

prevent suicides.

“We are currently running a community outreach program and want to visit as many people as possible before the Royal Commission closes off.”

This service is not only available to ex-Defence personnel but their families and partners as well who may be affected by trauma.

Mr Baras-Miller said all private sessions are 100 per cent confidential and any information given to them is kept

confidential and private for 99 years.

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is nearing completion and if it can be proven that a person’s suicide was war related the Australian War Memorial (AWM) will add that person’s name onto their Roll of Honour.

Local artists featuring at Mansfield art show LOCAL Strathbogie Shire artists feature in this year’s Mansfield Easter Art Show which opened on Good Friday.

Celebrating 24 years the Mansfield Easter Art Show is being held again at the Masonic Hall in Highett Street until this Sunday, April 16 from 9am till 6pm each day.

It features local artists such as Drew Gregory (Longwood), Wendy Webster (Tallarook), Rod Thorley (Benalla) and Libby Scheiber (Yarrawonga).

This art exhibition began in 1999 by Mansfield born Richard Watson and has grown to become one of the most popular art shows in regional Victoria attracting patrons from both interstate and throughout the state.

Watson was joined by a former employer and colleague Terry Earle of Without Pier Gallery in recent years and between them they have sourced some of Victoria’s most successful and popular artists to exhibit in Mansfield.

This year promises some of the most stunning art seen at the show in many years featuring an amazing collection of works from world renowned, and local Mansfield artist, Tony Pridham.

SPEAK UP: Annabelle Cleeland is concerned about the reduction in regional banking services and urges residents to speak up.

Public submissions open to regional bank closure inquiry THE community has until April 28 to have their say on bank closures in regional Australia via a parliamentary inquiry.

An Australian Parliament Senate Standing Committee will examine the current extent of bank closures in regional Australia and the impacts this has on regional communities.

Nationals Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, is encouraging locals to make a public submission given a recent spate of branch closures and service reductions.

“We have seen several closures across our region of late with locals understandably angry about the reduction in face-to-face services,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Bendigo Bank is shutting their agency services in both Stanhope and Euroa, while Seymour ANZ cloased after the October floods.

“Some of the most vulnerable members of our community rely on their services and their departure from our regional communities will leave a gaping hole in financial services.”

The inquiry includes reference to the economic and welfare impacts of bank closures on customers and regional communities.

“So many people across our region aren’t set up for online banking for a range of reasons and branch closures have a massive impact on these people,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Our elderly often rely on cash to pay bills and are left in a difficult position if services are reduced, particularly in smaller regional towns.

“While our banking system is modernising it remains crucial regional Vic-

torians are not left behind in this transition.”

The inquiry will also investigate solutions to bank closures in regional Australia.

“While it is all well and good bemoaning the closures of branches across regional areas what we really need is solutions,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I’m hopeful this committee will report with some strong recommendations and a pathway to protecting and balancing regional service with a modern financial system.”

Submissions close on April 28 with the final report due in December this year and must relate to the closure of branches not agencies.

CFA VOLUNTEERS across Victoria will get new, locally made uniforms that provide better protection from heat thanks to investment from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes visited Stewart & Heaton recently to tour the local manufacturer delivering the new wildfire personal protective clothing (PPC) to Victorian firefighters.

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said CFA volunteers go above and beyond every day to protect Victorians.

“We’re proud to deliver this new uniform that will help to protect them while they perform their important work,” she said.

“CFA members shaped this new clothing, which means it’s custom made to fit their needs and be comfortable in difficult conditions - all while being locally made.”

Providing an improved level of protection from radiant heat and heat-related illness, the new gear will feature CFA’s iconic yellow but will be made of lighter weight materials with better design for function and comfort.

The PPC is specifically tailored for both men and women, ensuring a safe and comfortable fit for all volunteers.

Manufactured using Hainsworth Eco-Dry Shield woven fabric, the garments have an inherent fire-retardant performance to provide benefits to firefighters including comfort, ease of movement and breathability.

The PPC will be provided to eligible members in addition to existing wildfire PPC, meaning recipients can continue to use their current wildfire PPC in addition to the new garments.

With the staggered rollout expected to begin in the coming months, the design of the PPC was informed by consultation with volunteers providing input on what they wanted to see in their new uniforms.

Mayor Binks appointed to advisory panel STRATHBOGIE Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks is one of 13 mayors from across Victoria to have been selected to sit on the State Government’s Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel for 2023.

Comprising a mix of urban, regional and rural mayors, the group represents the diversity of Victorian communities.

Cr Binks joined with Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne on Monday for the first of four meetings this year.

“The panel plays an integral role as an advisor on local government matters and local community needs,” Ms Horne said.

“I look forward to chairing this important panel and learning from the experience and advice the members

will provide throughout the year.”

The panel changes annually and is set up to offer the minister advice on legislative, regulatory, strategic and policy issues that affect councils across the state.

This year’s panel is expected to focus its work on governance and accountability.

Other councils represented on the panel include Baw Baw Shire, Greater Bendigo City, Glen Eira City, Hobsons Bay City, Indigo Shire, Kingston City, Mitchell Shire, Monash City, Moonee Valley City, Mount Alexander Shire, Moyne Shire and Yarra City.

Purpose built equine surgical facility opens AVENEL Equine Hospital celebrated the official opening of a new purpose-built equine surgical facility, officiated by Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland MP on recently.

Director and equine specialist surgeon Angus Adkins said they are very excited this facility is now operational.

“It enables us to offer equine surgery at a gold standard level in an efficient and safe workplace,” he said.

“We have three dedicated and highly experienced surgeons, with a combined 100 years of surgical experience.

“They have experience in all aspects of equine surgery, having international reputations,

and trusted to care for the highest profile horses in the country.

“The facility also compliments the newly completed surgery stable barn to accommodate our surgical cases, providing effective bio-security between elective procedures and hospitalised patients.”

Avenel Equine Hospital was purchased seven years ago by parent company Scone Equine Group, the largest equine veterinary practice in the Southern hemisphere.

“As a group, we saw the opportunity to purchase this Victorian practice to establish a long term foothold in a growing equine region.

“Since our purchase we have

invested in our people and the facilities to cater for this growth.

“We currently employ 11 veterinarians, five of whom have specialist training and 17 support staff.

“We have added a purpose built laboratory, stabling for an additional 18 horses and now the recently completed surgical facility.

“As the concentration of horses in the area increases, so too do the expectations of their owners for access to the latest veterinary knowledge and techniques.

“This development will allow us to expand our services and keep at the forefront of equine

veterinary science.”

Avenel Equine Hospital is a full service equine hospital located in the heart of Victoria’s thoroughbred breeding region, providing comprehensive services to equine clients in the local area (Avenel, Nagambie, Seymour and Euroa).

Its services range from routine vaccinations and health checks for ponies to 24-hour-aday intensive care for newborn foals, lameness evaluation for sport horses to assisted reproduction.

160 family members attend “celebration of learning”

By DARREN CHAITMAN ST John’s Primary School in Euroa hosted an open day they dubbed a “celebration of learning” at the end of March, inviting the families of students into the classroom to see learning take place.

To involve families in the learning process, principal Therese Stewart said the students shared math games, their workbooks, work displayed in their classrooms and work on their iPads.

“The research shows when parents are involved in their children’s education it achieves better outcomes,” Ms Stewart said.

Ms Stewart was “really pleased” 160 family members attended, with most children having at least one family member there.

Grandparents were particularly interested in how much things had changed since their own time at primary school, while parents were just happy to see what their children were doing.

“Often when the kids go home the parents ask, ‘What did you learn?’ and they’ll go, ‘Oh, nothing’, but here they had actual physical evidence,” Ms Stewart said.

Following the success of the event, which was the first of its kind at St John’s since the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms Stewart said the school will host a similar event at the end of every school term.

Euroa Secondary College students were congratulated by Gladys Sariusak for being included in the current SAM exhibition and being the top VCE studio arts students of 2022.

This year, they were able to celebrate their second showcase at SAM Shepparton Art Museum, and they concluded the event with an awards night last month.

The exhibition remains open until April 24 and can be viewed on Level 2 of the Museum.

The 20 young creatives engage with a variety of social and cultural issues, including environmentalism and the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the process only three submissions were made to the original application put to council

by Spiire Australia and CRC Constructions on behalf of the developer.

At council’s March meeting the motion put to councillors was unanimously passed with Cr Reg Dickinson moving and seconded by Cr Sally HayesBurke.

APPROVAL for a 48ha (268 lot) residential subdivision, abutting Lake Nagambie, has passed through Strathbogie Shire Council and will now be presented to the Minister for Planning for final approval.

The subdivision has taken some three years to get through various stages and processes including rezoning from Farming to General Residential Zone.

In speaking for the motion Cr Dickinson said, “This has been three years in the making and I think it is great for Nagambie - it is in line with council’s growth strategy for the area”.

As approval for this subdivision has been before the minister previously, a fast ‘sign off ’ is expected.

No touching portable devices while driving, riding or rolling AS from March 31 new road rules came into effect in Victoria that clarify the use of portable devices when driving a vehicle or riding another form of transport such as a motorbike, bicycle, e-scooter or even rollerblades.

The principles underpinning the rules remain the same: don’t touch your unmounted or wearable device while you’re driving or riding.

RACV Head of Policy,

James Williams, explained the new rules and the penalties that could apply for the illegal use of portable devices.

“We appreciate that the rules are complex, but this reflects the developing range of technologies that can distract a driver,” Mr Williams said.

“In general, drivers or riders who hold a full licence cannot touch an unmounted or wearable device, such as a phone, tablet, laptop,

smart watch, or any other device while driving or riding.

“You can connect to your vehicle’s Bluetooth, then place the unmounted device out of sight and reach before you start your journey.

“As a general rule, drivers and riders can use mounted devices or inbuilt systems for functions such as music and navigation, provided they are not entering text, scrolling, or viewing images, social media, websites,

or videos,” Mr Williams said.

“For wearable devices such as smart watches, you can’t touch the device while driving or riding.

“You can only use voice controls to initiate, accept or reject audio calls, play or stream audio materials, or adjust volume levels.

“You can also use a mobile phone or other device to pay at a drive-through.

“For mobile phones and tablets, the mounting must

be commercially designed and manufactured for that purpose, and the device must be secured in the mounting.”

Mobile device and seat belt cameras are currently being introduced in Victoria.

The cameras will capture drivers and riders who are holding mobile phones or other devices, as well as drivers and passengers who are not wearing seatbelts, or not wearing them properly.

These new road rules aim to keep road users safe, reflect the significant increase in technologies capable of distracting a driver, and bring Victoria into line with the road rules in other states.

Learner, P1 and P2 drivers are subject to much stricter rules and should visit the RACV website for more information.

Euroa had a somewhat scrappy start with Ned Ivill, Jack Walters and Harrison Mills getting plenty of the football and using it well.

Baxter Fraser was doing very well in the ruck whilst Will Creevey was getting plenty of the football.

Euroa kicked three goals till half time.

Mansfield broke the game open in the third quarter and kicked plenty of goals to make it a tough game for the Euroa boys.

Robert Lawrence was very busy at full back with Archie Wilson getting his hands on the footy.

Euroa were battling to hit the scoreboard yet this did not deter the likes of Dublin Anderson and Brodie Hamill who continued to work hard to keep supplying the ball to

Euroa’s forwards Caid Miller and Caden Robinson who both kept presenting well.

Down back, Walter Jackson, Alif Chambers, Bailey Allen and Kusuma Wolfenden continued to work hard but Mansfield were the stronger team on the day.

Thanks to Mansfield who gave Euroa four of their players to keep the spirit of the game well and truly alive.

Euroa under 18 have wonderful bunch of players and families who need to keep their heads up and enjoying their football at our great club.

Castlemain’s David Honebone wins State Tower Pointscore WINTERY conditions faced the large group of competitors as they lined up for the Euroa Clay Target Club’s Easter shoot on Sunday.

Bursts of strong cold southerly wind coupled with bursts of rain made shooting conditions very challenging.

With targets thrown from some nine metres above the competitors head, targets flew rather erratically, however, visiting shooter David Honebone from Castlemaine overcame all this to register a very good score of 72/75 to win the State Championship from Corowa’s Brett Ford on 71/75.

The final two championships that were very generously sponsored by long term member, Rob Stackhouse, returned to more conventional means with targets thrown from the normal trap houses.

Honebone continued with his excellent form to register the only possible score of 25/25 to take out the “Side by Side” Championship.

This event is shot with the old style side by side shotguns and the cup presented

by Stackhouse is keenly sort after.

The final championship, the continental event went to the only 25 target shot by Woods Point shooter Shayne Whelan, with next best being the two B grade veterans, John King and Rob Stack-

house on 24/25.

Thus ended a very challenging day’s competition which included a trap breakdown fixed by our club’s bush mechanics.

Special mention must be made of Alana Towers and Heather Crosbie who kept up a great supply of warm refreshments to keep the waiting crowd happy.

Athletics fun in red, green and yellow

By LYNNDA HEARD WHETHER they were competing in the athletics or there cheering their house on, the students and staff from Euroa Secondary College had a wonderful day of fun last week.

Euroa’s Memorial Oval was the perfect venue for the 2023 annual ESC athletics carnival.

Teachers Kim Saxon and Kevin Bott had been concerned about the weather, but put their worries aside as the day was ideal.

Javelins speared the air, high jumper’s bodies cleared the pole, shot-putters tossed that heavy orb, and runners ran with one objective in mind, to be first over the line.

Records were broken in the discus throws by Macey Ross who set a new record, while Samy Tatai, with a larger than usual smile on his face, performed a magic discus throw of 20.9m.

The students and staff chose an array of costumes to signify the colours of their houses: Kirkland in red won on the day, and were amply challenged by Furlong in yellow and Creighton in green.

It was all in for the tugof-war at the end of the day and it was a huge hit, but as for the winner, it was hard to tell with the noise of screams and laughter from everyone.

Next year the students might devise a plan of their own to outsmart the staff.

Sack and three-legged races were also part of the day and were taken very seriously.

Apart from the students putting in their all, the other winners were laughter, endeavour and the year 12 barbecue which made a decent profit on the day.

Congratulations to all the students and staff for making the 2023 athletics day a blast.

Come along and support local clubs during 2023 KDL season THE Strathbogie Shire once again has four clubs who represent it in the Kyabram and District Football Netball League for season 2023.

With Nagambie, Avenel, Longwood and Violet Town all registering football and netball sides both junior and senior with hopes of attaining the ultimate success later in the year.

In the senior football Avenel finished the ladder leaders in 2022 and al-

though coach Kasey Duncan has vacated his position the Swans are still hoping to be a very competitive team in 2023.

Violet Town just scraped into finals finishing in sixth position, however, lost in week one and were eliminated by Nagambie.

From there Nagambie failed to further progress into finals, losing to Lancaster (eventual premiers) in the first semi-final.

However, the recruitment

of Jarmyn Tremellan and Nic Asquith will mean the Lakers are only going to be stronger in 2023.

Longwood finished 2022 as the wooden spooners, but the recruitment of Baz Formosa as senior coach brings a wealth of experience to the club as they prepare to embark on an ascent up the ladder.

For the A grade netball, all sides within the Strathbogie Shire will be looking to improve on 2022 with

Nagambie being the highest placed representative at the season’s conclusion, finishing third on the ladder.

Violet Town followed in fifth position, behind them was Avenel 10th and Longwood in 12th.

With this said, across all grades of football and netball the Strathbogie Shire once again looks to have a strong hand in the KDFNL and the Gazette wishes all representatives luck for the upcoming season.

UPCOMING SEASON: The KDL will commence April 15.

A and B grade eclipse the Eagles EFNC NETBALL A GRADE Final scores: Euroa 64 defeated Mansfield 26 EUROA A grade started the season with three new faces to the team Olivia Morris, Mia Sudomirski and Grace Warnock, with Bridget Hill unavailable to play this year and Karly Wappett not returning to the Magpies.

Euroa did not take long to start playing as a team and did not look like this was their first hit out.

A couple of midcourt changes to start the second quarter did not see Euroa’s momentum alter.

Kellie Davidson’s defensive pressure around the ring creating several turnovers and Mia and Olivia were combining well in the ring to increase the lead dramatically.

Third quarter showed that Mansfield were not going to give up finding holes in Euroa’s game who were trying to force the ball into the ring and Mansfield scoring from these turnovers.

Maggies settled a bit more in the last half of the quarter and Sophie Owen in centre creating some fluid passages of play.

Euroa’s tall timber were off the court this quarter, so the team were having to create a different style of game but the team adapted well and started the season with a convincing win.

Coaches best players were - Tylah Marchbank, Sophie Owen and Olivia Morris.

B GRADE Final score: Euroa 51 defeated Mansfield 21 IT was a new look Magpies team that took to the court on Saturday in Mansfield, a promising mix of experience and youth.

Months of punishing preseason work was soon paying dividends as the Magpies looked fitter, faster and quite simply more fabulous from the first whistle.

Euroa’s defence was formidable for the entire four quarters.

Euroa’s mid court, led by Megan O’Bree in the centre and ably assisted by Abbie Ellis, Sienna Trotter and Caitlyn Elliott on the wings, did not stop running all game.

All girls were fleet of foot and determined in their play, creating space and vision with accurate passing and plenty of talk.

The Magpie goalers started what is hoped will be a very accurate season of shooting, rarely missing an opportunity to convert.

Cass Payne, Sarah Ternes and Molly Redfern combined well in the congested ring, leading strongly and rebounding cleanly on the very few occasions there

was a rebound to get.

At the final whistle it was a 30 goal win to the Magpies, and an excellent start to the season.

This week it is a home game at Memorial Oval against long-time rivals Benalla, and will be another chance for the Euroa team to refine and finesse team plays and structures.

EUROA’S U17 team started the 2023 season on a sunny day in Mansfield.

The newly appointed team captain Lily Meehan conducted official coin tossing duties and play began.

It was a tough first quarter, with the new look Magpies working out their

nerves and Mansfield displaying none.

At the end of gruelling first quarter, it was Euroa 1 - Mansfield 11.

The second quarter saw some better passages of play, with all team players trying hard.

Nevertheless, the Eagles continued to extend their lead - Euroa 4 - Mansfield 21.

By the third quarter, the sunny day had gone and the weather had turned cold and windy.

Euroa held strong and played harder - third quarter time scores - Euroa 8 Mansfield 36.

In the final quarter, the Euroa girls were all smiling and enjoying themselves.

Pleasingly, some much needed talking began, which will be a great place to start next week when the Magpies take on the Benalla Saints at Memorial Oval.

By MAGGIE ASQUITH Final scores: Mansfield 40 defeated Euroa 17 AS we waited in anticipation for the whistle to start the game, we wondered where had the time gone?

Welcome back to the returning players and a big welcome to the five new players joining the mighty Euroa team.

The girls are in for a great season under coach Kelly Hill and we wish them all the best over the coming weeks and months.

Mansfield was off to a flying start with a quick couple of goals on the board before Euroa were able to score.

Some good pressure applied by the defenders saw many turnovers with the attackers taking advantage and sinking the goals.

The quarter saw Mansfield settle quicker into the game putting more on the scoreboard than Euroa would like.

The Magpie midcourt players were working overtime, passing into the goal ring when the opportunity arose.

Some positional changes at the next break saw the Euroa girls put up the first couple of goals. Manfield tightened up, applying more pressure on the Euroa team across every position. The Euroa players were working well as a team, never giving up.

The final quarter saw Euroa match Mansfield goal for goal.

The Euroa girls were applying lots of pressure in the defence end and the attackers were moving the ball around well in their goal third, getting the ball to the shooters, resulting in goals.

The Euroa girls never gave up and played the quarter out.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS EUROA BOWLS CLUB IT was a busy week for some of the Euroa Bowls Club bowlers who have been playing in club championships.

First of all Anne Sutcliffe and Kerrie Steers played in a very interesting match in the ladies pairs championship against Pauline Naylor and Beth Alston.

Although the match lasted two and a half hours the scores didn’t indicate the results with Anne and Kerrie the eventual winners.

Anne, again with husband Ken, played in the mixed pairs against Margaretta Cereni and Bill Sargood, resulting in another win for the Sutcliffes after a lengthy match.

Congratulations to you all on the way you played in all the finals, all very good to watch.

The weather was not conclusive for a day’s bowling on Good Friday, but 18 bowlers came along to play three games of bowls on the wonderful greens at the club, all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital appeal.

Lucky raffle winners were Joan Pearson, Beth Alston, Pauline Naylor and Mary Steen and a nice sum of $500

was given to the appeal.

There are still some championship matches to be played and these will be finalised before next Sunday, April 16 when presentation day will be held.

Bowls will start at 1pm with a break halfway through with afternoon tea followed by another game before the presentations conclude with a pizza tea to round up the day.

Please bring a small plate of afternoon tea to enjoy with your fellow bowlers to make this a day of congratulations to all winners and thanks to all for a successful season despite the upheaval with the floods damaging the clubhouse.

GOLF GV VETERAN GOLFERS

By ROLF WEBER CONGRATULATIONS are extended to the Deniliquin volunteers and staff for presenting the course in such wonderful condition for our event on April 3 after the difficulties following the floods in October 2022.

Some 78 veteran golfers, including six new members, enjoyed the sunshine and ideal conditions, with the temperature during the

event moving from 21 to 26 degree Celsius and a breeze of 12kph, gusting to 24kph.

The course is challenging with the creek and dam hazards and adequate bunkering and it’s a credit to the designers to get the best out of the natural landscape.

A-grade was won by a local with Barry Barlow accumulating 36 stableford points ahead of Jack Dell, Numurkah, on count-back with 35 points.

B-grade was an all Mooroopna affair with Lindsay Simms on 34 pts ahead of Michael Meehan on 32 pts.

C-grade winner was Max Ryder of Nathalia with 35 pts, from Kialla stalwart, Leo Hartup with 30 pts.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 170 metre ninth hole where Tom McConchie, Parkland, took home the prize in A-grade; Garry Baker in B-grade; and Cgrade remained unclaimed as a ball on the fringe of the green was rightly deemed ineligible.

Reserves, under 18s lose opening clashes

By TONY BRODIE EFNC RESERVES OUR Euroa seconds team took to the field with a strong wind blowing down towards the town end of Mansfield.

There were many new faces in this team, which made it difficult for coach Linc McKernan to enable our players to understand one another’s games, all the while knowing the Mansfield reserves are always hard to beat on their home ground.

The Mansfield team began the match kicking with the wind and were quickly on the scoreboard, with good ball movement.

Our Euroa players were taking time to settle down and adjust to the tempo of the game.

Some excellent work in the backline from the likes of Trent Storer and Nick McCabe, meant the floodgates were closed somewhat by the end of the quarter.

At the commencement of the second quarter, our team were quickly out of the box, moving the ball into our forward line and scoring multiple goals to stay in touch with Mansfield.

Euroa were winning the ball at the contest, evergreen club games record holder and 2022 reserves league best and fairest Craig Bamford playing excellent football.

This dominance from Bamford was matched by younggun Josh Robertson whose explosive efforts and sure ball handling made him a force to be reckoned with in the middle and up forward.

At the half time break we were back in the game.

As the match moved into the third quarter, the Euroa team contested hard in the middle, moving the ball into our forward line where we had opportunities to score goals against the wind and place pressure on their Mansfield opponents.

However, inaccurate kicking and not converting on the scoreboard allowed Mansfield to break away and hold a good lead at the three-quarter time break.

Our players started the last quarter with a real team focus, captain Robbie Wilson leading the way and getting his team on track with goals of his own as well as setting opportunities up for others.

The side was working hard to get back into the contest yet missed a number of opportunities, this allowed the Mansfield team to steady and score a couple late in the game, giving them a break on our team to come away with points.

It was a good effort by our reserves who tried hard, the young players tried hard in their first taste of senior football with the older players turning up to help.

We had chances to win but just had to straighten up when using the ball.

The club hopes the new faces enjoyed the game and the older players will continue supporting our coach Linc McKernan.

The umpires were consistent in their decision making to be both sides and are to be congratulated for their efforts.

With a solid preseason training under expert guidance from Will Hayes, and the support of our senior club, coach Hill looked forward to seeing what the day may have in store.

With Darby Wilson and Cohen Paul unavailable due to their Murray Bushranger commitments, the side was a couple of players short from the get-go.

This was also compounded with 2022 under 16 league best and fairest winner Ryan Hill getting his first opportunity to play in the senior side.

The club is delighted for these players in their representative achievements and playing senior footy.

Coach Hill was delighted to again work closely with the Euroa Junior Football Netball Club and arrange with coach of the under 16 team Matt Mills to get the services of a few of these players, without these lads and a couple from the Mansfield team there would not have been a match played.

THE GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League (GVL) last week announced it has finalised its broadcasting partnerships for 2023.

The GVL commentary team, headed by Michael Van Dorsser, is back better than ever in 2023.

After successfully providing commentary for both football and netball games throughout season 2022, Michael and the team finished the year off with a bang by providing commentary for all five netball grand finals

Seymour FM will call every Seymour home and away game and Radio Mansfield will broadcast every Mansfield home game.

ONE FM will call one game each week throughout the GVL’s home and away season.

Southern Cross Austereo (Triple M GV & Hit 96.9 GV) return as league partners for 2023 and will continue to assist us in promoting matches each week.

Magpies kickstart 2023 campaign with gutsy victory over Mansfield

By SCOTT WATSON IN A welcome to return to local football and netball, the Euroa Magpies senior football side took to the ground in Mansfield at the traditional time slot of 2pm on Saturday afternoon to come away with a six-point win.

A fantastic crowd was in attendance, as so many from both the Mansfield and Euroa communities embraced being back at the footy.

Euroa named a side that had more than seven different players from its grand final team in 2022.

Coming into the side were debutants Ryan Hill, Nic Burke and Jack Christie - well done to these young guns on their first senior match.

Returning to the team after a while away was Jake Penman and new to the side were classy recruits Will Hayes and Ryan Pendlebury, while the depth of the club is wonderful in that high-quality players like Zac Gleeson and Peter Cairns responded well, as again they looked right at home in the senior team.

Euroa skipper Jacob Gleeson won the toss and elected to kick with what would continue to be a three-goal breeze throughout the afternoon.

In a burst of play from the center bounce, Euroa began very well and immediately put scoreboard pressure on Mansfield.

Livewire Vice Captain Jett Trotter again underlined his class with excellent forward play, scoring and setting up goals at will.

Speaking of Will (Hayes that is), it gave the Euroa faithful much pleasure to see him running around in the black and white and his game was superb, underlining his quality as a premier midfielder of the GVFL. Andrew Smith again showed why he is the reigning club senior best and fairest, with another dominant display in the ruck and around the ground.

His ability to give midfielders Jacob Gleeson, Andrew Bell, Jett Trotter and Will Hayes use of the football was first class.

Despite this energy and effort, the Mansfield Eagles were pressing hard in this second quarter and scoring well when going forward.

Cool-headed defensive efforts from recruit Ryan Pendlebury stemmed the Mansfield tide.

Pendlebury’s presence in this back six will continue to influence more and more as the weeks roll on.

After a ‘rev up’ at half time by coach Scott Rowan the Magpies came out of the sheds determined to put a gap between themselves and the home team, knowing the last quarter would be against the wind for the Pies.

The main way they were able to do this was to make definite efforts in getting the ball in quick to the key forwards Nathan Stewart and Jack McKernan (at this stage the side was one key forward down with Tristan Davies having severely rolled an ankle and out for the rest of the match). With this ball entry now at a greater speed and precision the Magpies played their best quarter for the game as they kicked seven goals to take a lead at the three-quarter time break.

Throughout the last quarter it was a seesawing affair with both sides looking to kick consecutive goals to attain the ascendancy.

It was a very tense affair right throughout the quarter, both teams coaching staff made numerous moves as the match came to a climactic ending, with the Pies getting up by a solitary goal.

The message in the rooms was a joyous but tempered one from Coach Rowan and his assistant Neale Poole.

Rowan went on to say “this was a game we needed to win, and it was the the work-rate for four quarters that allowed us to come out on top.”

Coaches and players alike, reminding themselves that teams in this competition will take advantage and make their opposition pay the price if this work-rate drops.

With the challenge of going two from two next week, Euroa heads back to Memorial Oval for a huge clash with rivals from up the freeway Benalla.

A 2pm game start time with a massive crowd expected, what more can everyone want.
