Man dies in Euroa skydiving incident A MAN has died following a skydiving incident in Euroa on Saturday.

Police have been told a 52-year-old Mount Martha man was found in bushes in the vicinity of the Airstrip Road aerodrome around 3pm after they didn’t land at the planned drop zone.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Ambulance Victoria was called to a report of an incident in Euroa at about 2:10pm on Saturday.

Acute hospital closes A RISE COVID-19 cases locally has prompted Euroa Health to close its acute hospital so staff can be realigned to GraniteHill Aged Care to support the residents, and their urgent care is also closed until further notice.

COVID-19 cases numbers have been rising in the past weeks with more people being able to travel in and out of the Strathbogie Shire to see their families over Christmas and New Year.

There are 136 COVID-19 cases, including 50 active in the shire.

GraniteHill has also been impacted by rising cases, as an individual with COVID-19 positive status identified as having worked at Euroa Health while asymptomatic on December 30, which led to Euroa Health activating their COVID-19 protocols immediately.

Many staff returned

from annual leave, worked extra shifts and the Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter commended her staff for their dedication to their patients and residents at Euroa Health through this time.

She also recognised that over the past few days in the heat and staff wearing full personal protection equipment has been tiring and stressful and acknowledged the support shown from their patients

and resident families throughout this time.

Mrs Hunter said the facility would continue to work under the requirements from the Department of Health, the Commonwealth, and the Public Health Unit.

“Until such time as they provide clearance, we are unable to open the facility to visitors or admissions,” she said.

“Euroa Health has not been immune to the long delays in obtaining

results from our PCR tests experienced statewide, our staff, resident and patient test results are taking up to six days to return, which hinders any plans to reopen the facility.”

At this time Euroa Health has also taken the unprecedented step to temporarily close the acute hospital as from the afternoon of January 5 so that staff from the acute hospital can be realigned to Granitehill aged care.

GOTAFE removing education barriers

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL jobseekers had better access to training, education and career counselling, as GOTAFE was in Euroa, in front of the Seven Creeks hotel last week.

The mobile campus was fully accessible, featuring a client reception area, private career counselling space, workshop and seminar space, and a community computer lab.

The mobile campus team worked to assist the local community and industry which are facing unprecedented social and economic challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mobile campus is fully equipped with three outside screens, four inside computer screens for visitors to use, two interactive screens and four iPads.

It also has a visitor reception area, a private counselling/ meeting space, a workshop delivery space and a community computer lab.

“GOTAFE is committed to playing a lead role in supporting Euroa in responding to these challenges,” GOTAFE chief executive officer Travis Heeney said.

“At its heart, the mobile campus works to bridge the gap between our communities and deliver critical

employment and education services, regardless of location, access and financial barriers.”

Cassia Colbeck, director student attraction and enrolment, said their vision with the mobile campus is to increase the level of education and training and decrease the level of unemployment in regional Victoria.

“We have really enjoyed working in partnership with Strathbogie Shire Council and the community of Euroa to deliver services that enhance their career, education and employment opportunities,” she said.

GOTAFE will work in partnership with local government and tap into job active networks and financial support services, ensuring a communitycentred approach as part of the service delivery.

This project recognises some students are disadvantaged by a lack of transport options which affects their access to education and other GOTAFE services.

The mobile campus was made possible by the State Government in partnership with GOTAFE and La Trobe University.

It will be heading to Yea in early 2022.

(Rev 3”16) As Gods’ Son, only Jesus has made eternal life possible, pouring Himself out through His suffering death; to save mankind from sin’s penalty of death and separation. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that Whoever should believe in Him should not perish but come to repentance and have everlasting life.” (John 3:16-18, 2 Peter 3:9) Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person and they with Me.” (Rev.3:20) He stands before every proud heart; knocking and asking us to lift the latch and allow Him in.

Yet people keep their minds closed, trusting in worldly things that are looking very insecure suddenly. We need ‘the expulsive power of a higher affection’. The Apostle Paul said, ‘Bodily exercise is valuable but spiritual exercise is more profitable, for the present life but also for the life to come.” (ITim.4:8) Could our priority this year, be to side-line admirable goals like weight loss and focus instead on transformational spiritual growth?

The impact of the world pandemic continues to seriously shake and undermine what we take for granted; so let’s awaken from complacent mind-sets. No-one is promised another day of life but glorious everlasting life IS promised to ‘children and heirs of Christ’.

Every soul is dearly loved by our faithful God, but we haven’t become His children, when we keep ignoring or rejecting Christs’ rich inheritance. When we refuse to share in Jesus suffering, can we really share in His Glory? The lasting effects of COVID-19 lockdowns A MAJOR new study looking at the impact of last year’s COVID-19 outbreaks on the mental health of Australian families shows Victorian parents and children experienced a significant peak in symptoms during that state’s extended lockdown, compared to the rest of Australia.

The study, which involved more than 2000 families, proved to be a rare natural experiment as Victoria battled higher infection rates and longer lockdowns than the rest of the country.

Significantly, the findings also showed a worrying third peak in mental health symptoms in Victoria during May this year, suggesting an ongoing impact from the pandemic even out of lockdown.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Adjustment Survey, led by Dr Elizabeth Westrupp at Deakin University’s Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED), found parent and child mental health symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress followed the COVID-19 infection rate, with a nation-wide peak in symptoms during the first national lockdown between April and May 2020 and a second much larger peak in symptoms in Victoria during that state’s second lockdown between July and October 2020.

MENTAL HEALTH: COVID-19 has severely impacted everyone’s mental health, including children’s. of parents and children during the pandemic, have been made available to the public via an online interactive app for readers.

“The data shows the considerable burden of the pandemic on Australian families, particularly those living in Victoria,” Dr Westrupp said.

“Victoria experienced one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world.

“This allowed us to see a clear difference in what was happening in Victoria compared to other parts of Australia, which were much less affected by COVID-19.”

For the study, parents of children aged from newborn to 18 years were followed 14

times over 14 months, from April 2020 to May 2021.

Dr Westrupp said the findings showed families most vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems included: 1. Mothers were particularly at risk of a deterioration in their mental health during the COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns.

2. High levels of loneliness in parents and children, preexisting mental health problems or high levels of couple conflict, led to worsening mental health trajectories over time.

3. Financial strains (such as low income, food shortages, and job losses) and poor-quality housing placed families at

increased risk of mental health problems.

4. Parents who reported feeling stressed or worried about the pandemic were more likely to experience mental health problems.

“The unexpected deterioration of parent and child symptoms in March to May this year may represent increasing public uncertainty or weariness with the pandemic and associated social restrictions,” Dr Westrupp said.

“These findings tell us we need to more actively monitor mental health and ensure good ongoing access to mental health supports and services even when pandemic impacts appear to be easing.”

Know the signs for what to do during a bushfire LOCALS, and now all Australians, will be better able to understand what to do when they receive a bushfire warning message this summer, thanks to a new national education campaign with the new Australian Warning System.

Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience, Senator Bridget McKenzie said thanks to hard work by the states and territories, there is now a national warning system to alert the community of bushfires and other natural disasters.

“But what we saw during the Black Summer bushfires, for example, was that there was a lack of understanding of what action to take depending on the warning,” Minister McKenzie said.

“The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements recommended that there be a national education campaign to improve public understanding of the warning system.

“The Australian Government is investing $2 million in the ‘Know the Signs’ campaign to educate the community about the Australian Warning System,

NEW STANDRAD WARNING ICONS: A consistent set of hazard signs has been developed for each warning level. There are icons for cyclone, bushfire, flood, extreme heat, storm, and other. including what to do to stay safe during a bushfire.”

The three national warning categories are: Advice: An incident has started. There is no immediate danger.

Stay up to date in case the situation changes.

Watch and Act: There is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now to protect you and your family.

Emergency Warning: An Emergency Warning is the highest level of warning. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately.

Any delay now puts your life at risk.

“The campaign will ensure that we all have a clear under-

standing of what we need to do when we receive a warning message, regardless of where we’re living, working or holidaying,” Ms McKenzie said.

“This will potentially save lives.”

Executive director of the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, Amanda Leck, said social research found that most people don’t understand or have not taken appropriate action under the hazard warning system in their state or territory.

“Fire and emergency service agencies across the country have come together to establish the Australian Warning System,” Ms Leck said.

“It aims to provide simple, high-level warnings, to help

Australians make the most appropriate decisions for their safety during a range of emergencies and disasters.

“The Know the Sign’ campaign complements the work being done by hazard management agencies in each state and territory to embed the Australian Warning System into their operations, including training, technology platforms and communications.”

The Australian Warning System is in the process of being implemented across floods, storms, cyclones, extreme heat and severe weather events, providing consistent symbols and calls to action, to help the community with their decision making across a range of hazardous conditions.

People relish the Euroa Library

Euroa Library stayed open until late during Euroa’s Twilight Christmas Event last month, enjoying the festivities with many others.

The library was able to highlight a wide range of newly acquired items in the collection readily available for borrowing.

Members borrowing on the night were entered into a prize draw sponsored by the Already Read Bookshop and also local artist Ted More.

Mr Sheehan has a long history with Euroa, having spent much time with his grandfather who lived locally.

Mr Sheehan moved back home to Euroa a number of years ago.

His vast knowledge and keen interest in Vintage Racing Cars, in particular the Austin make, is impressive, according to librarian Cathy Artridge who said he was well known across Australia and overseas amongst Austin enthusiasts.

He has competed in Hillclimbs in Victoria, South Australia and also at Tholt-y-Will on the Isle of Man, among others.

Mr Sheehan is active in the Austin 7 Club, and also in restoring and helping others restore their vintage cars.

Mr Sheehan is also a champion Table Tennis player and umpire, involved in the Australian and Victorian Veterans Championships.

Lastly, the Euroa Library has also organised a colouring competition, and 5 year old Owen Ortlipp has won a prize for his excellent colouring skills.

Ferguson show his true colours

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL artist and illustrator Jamie Ferguson’s work is being exhibited at backARTS gallery in Violet Town.

On January 7 from 5.30pm the show An Eyelid of Storm was launched with a celebratory cocktail at the backARTS gallery.

The exhibition is described by the artist as “the life-blood of the paintbrush (and the cleaning rag) for this exhibition can be felt in the touches of colour, in the touches of silliness, and in a touch of ghost, but in the end everything is but colour.”

Mr Ferguson also told The Euroa Gazette “Often the world of the imagination is maligned as “just the imagination”, but it can be as real as the “real’ world”.

“And the signposts through this world, more than the images, are the colours,” he said.

“So, what pleasure can there be from bringing forth such strange worlds?

“The joy of creating, because it nourishes and informs the world of the everyday.

“The exhibition is about little inner worlds, little voyages into the world of the imagination.”

First road trip in Australia

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL AFTER almost one year living in Australia, I hadn’t seen much of this beautiful country because a handful of lockdowns had prevented me and my partner to travel further than to the fence of our backyard.

I finally got to see more of this wide and wild country during my two weeks break from The Euroa Gazette as I embarked with my fiancé Richard Hayes for a typical Aussie road trip in our van, very much part of what I dreamt when I thought of the Australian dream.

I thought I’d share with you how it felt to do this beautiful drive because of the novelty it represented for me, the adventure I experienced made my girlfriends in France blemish with envy.

Camping is not as cultural as it is in my home country than in my adoptive motherland, as French people solely camp but it is completely part of Australian culture and for me, waking up every day in a new place in a tent or our Volkswagen Transporter felt like magic.

Going from a very sedentary lifestyle to a wandering 10 days, I felt blessed being able to experience Australian nature firsthand, waking up with Kookaburras laughing in our ears and not so very shy wallabies hopping around the camping site.

I enjoyed going to sleep with the sun and waking up with the nature around me, as insects and animals emerged from their slumbers at the same pace as we did.

It is as if we were in “On the road” from Jack Kerouac, minus the mischiefs and shenanigans the characters of the novel are going through.

Our road trip started from Euroa and ended in Merimbula, with very welcomed stays in Albury, on Mont Kosciuszko, but also in the countryside surrounding Marlo, Omeo and Bright on the way back.

On our way to Merimbula, we went through Yackadandah, past Lake Hume to Corryong into Kosciuszko through Mount Perisher (what a name) to Jindabyne.

ROOM WITH A VIEW: The campsites were always a vision during this 1600km road trip. as a beach holiday one in one, while listening to country music blasting in the speaker of our faithful old van.

On Mount Kosciuszko, we camped near a creek surrounded with quite short gum trees, their size being directly impacted by the altitude of the mountain.

We had jaffles for breakfast, it might seem common to you but it was such a thrill for me to eat one of these delicious cross breed between a sandwich and a waffle that I still salivate when I think about it.

Cooking while you’re camping is an absolute challenge for novices like me, but I am lucky to be engaged to an extremely talented chef for whom cooking on a campfire (in New South Wales, there was no total fire ban at the time) is just another child’s play.

I also learnt that Mount Perisher’s name came from the

first settler’s history of sometimes losing livestock on its flanks during the summer months as cows and sheep were pasturing there.

My fiancé took the opportunity to fish, one of his longtime passions, in the hope of cooking trout for us on the “barbie” (not a doll) for us at night, but the fish were a bit too modest in size.

We got our fish fix as we arrived in Merimbula, where I ate the best oysters I had in my lifetime, delicate and fresh, as we were celebrating New Year’s Eve there.

I was amazed by how the Australian landscape and nature are ever-changing, going from thick high forests to dryer fields and weather going from quite humid and sometimes foggy to extremely hot, and it reinforced my amazement to know I am in a country the size of Europe with not even the half of France’s population.

When taken into account, Australia is a country and a continent of its own, and my country is about the size of Victoria itself.

But Australia has in total

MOUNTAIN: The road trip was about spotting the never ending space of the beautiful Australian Mount Kosciuszko. around 25 million inhabitants and France up to 65, and the feeling of everlasting space was such a blessing for me, after having lived in European cities where everyone is always gasping for more room and more air.

It was also surprising to me how much Australia looks like nothing I have ever seen before, but is also very similar to European countries I know.

The green hills of the nature surrounding Bright resembled to Switzerland for instance, whereas the dryer nature with gum trees and soft pink summer lights in the evening around Yackandandah made me feel like I was in Greece.

The turquoise ocean and the white sand also played tricks with my memories of Greece, where I have been going every year since I was born, but the very cold temperature and tall waves called me back to reality.

I am grateful for all the memories I made during this trip and hope to make many more in the near future in this beautiful country full of history, despite the many comments I have heard about Australia being just a new country, as its nature is a proof of the contrary.

Mrs Hunter said Strathbogie Shire quickly acted to provide 66 rubbish bins to assist with the disposal of personal protective equipment, that their staff are having to wear throughout this period which was at first thought was cost prohibiting to their organisation, but delivery same day by council has been one less issue.

“In addition, the services of Burtons IGA to turn around orders and deliver directly to us has also been fantastic,” Mrs Hunter said.

Mayor Laura Binks said in Strathbogie Shire there are people, families and businesses right across our region who are being impacted by coronavirus.

“The single best thing we can all do is get our boosters,” Cr Binks said.

“The latest advice from the Chief Health Officer is that you are due for your third dose if you had your second dose at least four months ago.

“We also understand at the moment it may be difficult to get a COVID-19 test.  “If you cannot access a PCR or Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), and you’re a household or household-like contact, or have symptoms, the most important thing you can do is to stay home and isolate.

“You don’t need a COVID-19 test to do this.

“The key message is isolate, rest, recover.

“We urge everyone to our community to stay safe and stay informed.”

Euroa Medical has received their first allotment 5-11-Year-Old vaccines, they are in the process of organising a venue for a larger scale clinic for the community by the end of this week.

To limit any further exposure, all staff continue to undertake Rapid Antigen Testing at the commencement of each shift and PCR test periodically, until such time as the site is given clearance.

The Department of Health also released changes to policy on January 1 to ensure healthcare services can continue to operate and as a result of this policy staff members can come to and from work but are still quarantined outside of work.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ARTC unclear with its response PARTS of the ARTC Euroa Website as at 26 December 2021 do not appear to have been updated since September.

In its Q&A article, ARTC places a key caveat, and a potential time-bomb upon Euroa citizens, with its response to its questions “Will the underpass flood?” and “How is flooding being mitigated?”

ARTC responded: “The proposed underpass has been engineered to sustain a 1 in 50-year flood event with the inclusion of a flood levee and pumps.”

Additionally: “Further investigations are required to understand what measures are required in the event of a 1 in 100-year flood without causing greater impacts to the community or resulting in an adverse effect to surrounding flood levels.”

The animation provided by ARTC, when paused at 0:39, shows a bird’s eye view of ARTC’s underpass option.

No flood levee banks are obvious in this view.

Neither pumps nor a pumphouse are visible (though perhaps large submersible pumps may be underneath).

In 2021 it is most unusual for a main road to be designed to withstand only a 1 in 50-year flood event.

It is now commonplace for public infrastructure to be required to withstand a 1 in 100-year flood.

A further caveat arises from ARTC’s response to its question: “How will the final decision be made?”

ARTC responded: “The outcome of the options assessment along with the community feedback and input from our key stakeholders will be provided to the Minister of Planning as part of the PSA approval.”

The difference in Flood Level between a 50-year and 100-year return period is not stated, but is important.

It will be significant: perhaps 600mm.

In the likely event “the Minister” will require the underpass to resist a 100year flood, will the underpass option be rejected, and will we be stuck with the visually dominating overpass ARTC has always wanted?

New interactive website to help manage widespread pests A NEW free and accessible website has been launched to assist land managers, pest controllers and community groups to manage rabbits, gorse and serrated tussock on their properties.

The Virtual Extension Officer website (VEO) was developed by the Victorian Gorse Taskforce (VGT) in collaboration with the Victorian Rabbit Action Network and the Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party, to help people take control of pests.

Rates capped at 1.75 per cent A NEW rate cap of 1.75 per cent has been set for all Victorian councils for the 2022/23 financial year, to help ease cost of living pressures for Victorians.

Minister for Local Government, Shaun Leane, announced the cap this week, under the State Government’s Fair Go Rates system.

The system began in 2016 to limit uncontrolled rate hikes and to provide councils with a clear framework to guide their budgeting while ensuring essential services continue to be delivered.

The cap is set each year by the Minister for Local Government with advice from the Essential Services Commission, guided by the Consumer Price Index.

Before the Fair Go Rates system was in-

troduced residents faced an average rate increase of six per cent every year.

The current rate cap of 1.5 per cent is the lowest since the system was first introduced.

Councils collect rates from residents annually to fund and deliver essential community infrastructure and services such as local parks, libraries, community centres, roads, kindergartens, waste collection and sports grounds.

Councils individually set rates for their municipalities every year through their budget process and must consult with their communities on decisions relating to budgets, rates, and other charges.

Line’s first VLocity train arrives

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL IT’S taken years to deliver, but the first North East VLocity passenger service arrived at Wangaratta Railway Station at 2.48pm yesterday - two minutes early.

In Euroa, locals have been not so satisfied with the new transport infrastructure.

Brendan Paterson, Euroa local, said he was very disappointed about the new trains.

“A decent train on a lousy track still equals a woeful service,” Mr Paterson said.

He also said he was not happy about the train schedules and timetables.

Mr Paterson said he moved to Euroa in 2001 and one of the attractions being a regular, reliable train service to Melbourne.

“Since 2010 or thereabouts when ARTC began their refurbishment both reliability and punctuality of V/Line services have been a joke as services down to 40kph and the track so bad around the Seymour region that for a while the cafe car had to stop service in that zone for a while because it was an OHS hazard,” Mr Paterson said.

“Two men were killed on a derailed train in 2020 due in part to poor track conditions.

“I don’t even consider V/ Line travel to Melbourne as an option any more.

“So maybe just a case of being disappointed with the service for so long I don’t expect anything positive out of it anymore and certainly would never rely on it.”

Mr Paterson said he was hoping to be proved wrong “and hopefully ARTC has finally got it right”.

“The real bug-bear with the train service is the timetable: at least six GOTAFE and two university campuses within 80km of Euroa and none of them accessible by public transport that

will get students to a campus in time for classes,” Mr Paterson said.

Other community member Frank York backed Mr Paterson’s comments.

“Euroa needs a more frequent and faster train service,” Mr York said.

“This can only be achieved with new trains and new track.

“Governments need to invest.”

However Peter Hill, who recently moved to Euroa, said he was happy with the new trains.

“I rode on one last week, it was excellent and on

“I thought I was being sent to the wrong platform - especially when I saw the gleaming new train on platform 2A instead of the usual 2B. “I checked with others on board and was told it was the correct one.”

He said that in economy, there were comfortable seats, each with a line-style drop-down lap-top table and a USB charging port on the back of every seat.

“I explored the whole train, at the end of every carriage was a poster saying a cafe bar was coming

soon,” he said.

“Throughout the train there was a sensible arrangement of double and quadruple seats, the latter with table and drop-down leaves for laptops.”

Mr Hill said there was still room for improvements.

“What would make it better is if there were more trains running in both directions as the last train to Euroa leaves Southern Cross at 6.02pm and an 8pm train would allow for early evening activities in Melbourne,” he said.

“A 10pm departure would be fantastic, especially if with faster journey times.”

Mr Hill also said he backed the adoption of the road-under-rail plan “that the vast majority of Euroa residents back”.

“This, coupled with an expanded, sustainable, railway plaza incorporating public artworks and open vistas would re-unite the town and encourage state, national, and international tourism,” he said.

The first of a fleet of VLocity trains to replace the ageing classic fleet on the line departed from Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station at 12.05pm, stopping at all major towns as it travelled to its final destination of Albury at 3.55pm.

With just over an hours

rest, it set off from Albury for the return journey to Southern Cross.

The long-haul standardgauge trains are the first of their kind - running a six-car set with 296 seats, which is more than the 283 on the existing classic fleet of trains.

V/Line will be progressively replacing all its passenger services on the V/Line with the VLocity trains, which are able to run at faster speeds on parts of the line, allowing them to make up time for any delays and helping to improve the performance of the line.

The current timetable will, however, remain in place while there are two train types running on the line to provide a consistent and reliable service for passengers.

Minister for Public Transport, Ben Carroll, told North East Media that it was “great to see the first new VLocity train run on the North East Line, delivering more comfortable, modern and reliable services for locals and visitors to the region”.

“We listened to the community in the design of these new trains - which are unique to the North East Line - with USB chargers, shared tables and more storage for bikes and luggage,” he said.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL ARTS and culture fans in regional Victoria will experience world-class performances in their local venues and see local productions brought to life, backed by new support from the government.

Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson last week announced the grant recipients for the latest rounds of the Touring Victoria and Small Regional Presenters programs.

Avenel action group Avenel Active received $4600 granted for the presentation of two performances of Peaceful Piano, a double-bill show featuring post-classical pianists and composers Luke Howard and Nat Bartsch.

The Small Regional Presenters program, delivered

by Regional Arts Victoria, provides grants to community groups and not for profit organisations, helping them bring performing arts shows to their local communities.

Grants totalling almost $120,000 have been awarded to 11 recipients who will stage a range of theatre performances, concerts, art and education programs and literary events.

Events will be presented at locations including Kaniva, Stratford, Queenscliff,

“Council congratulates Avenel Active for securing almost $5000 in funding, and for its commitment to arts and culture in the community,” Cr Binks said.

“We have seen such a strong commitment from the Avenel community to bring professional productions to their town - the most recent example being the Eddie Perfect performances.

“As an artist myself, this is a key passion area for me.

“Art enriches the physical, economic, social and cultural elements of a

community.”

Cr Binks said funding like the Victorian Government’s Touring Victoria and Small Regional Presenters Program allows communities like ours to have access to fabulous performances and creative learning opportunities.

“Council is committed to supporting arts and culture in our community,”

Cr Binks said.

“I am determined to see our artistic community have places to create and display together.

“In our council plan you will see a review, followed by implementation of the arts and culture strategy to support the community in driving diversity in activities and events.”

Touring Victoria provides grants to arts and cultural organisations, performers and creatives to help them to take professional productions, performances, exhibitions and programs to regional and outer-metropolitan Victoria.

This year’s program has awarded grants of more than $765,000 to eight tours including the Australian Ballet for performances in Mildura and Bendigo, singer-songwriter Kutcha Edwards’s tour of 26 locations and a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra tour of nine centres including Wangaratta, Warragul, Shepparton, Ballarat, Bendigo and Mildura.

The MSO’s initiative takes in concerts, free pre-concert lectures, schools and community workshops and rehearsals with community choirs.

Also receiving funding are tours of The Alphabet of Awesome Science and

Barbaroi, contemporary art exhibitions by National Exhibitions Touring Support Victoria, all-female circuscomedy show Don’t Mess with the Dummies, and Finucane & Smith’s Travelling Dance Hall - the Whole of Community Celebration, along with a 25-destination tour by the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.

These include The Bellarine Sessions, a series of concerts in coastal towns around the Bellarine Peninsula, a series of community concerts in Creswick and kickstART, a year-long community focused program of performances in Stratford.

In the north east, there is support for six live performances to be held at local halls in the King Valley.

Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson said “It’s fantastic to see so many wonderful arts events and cultural performances being presented at locations right across the state.”

“These programs ensure more Victorians can enjoy great productions in venues large and small, and they bolster creative workers who deliver so much for their communities,” Mr Pearson said.

Two major events to join forces in Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT TWO major events in Nagambie are soon to join forces to complement one another.

The 2022 Nagambie Go Fish competition is to be held between February 10-13 and the Nagambie on Water Festival (NOW) is preparing for its 15th Festival on Saturday, February 12 in conjunction with the Go Fish Tournament activities.

Both events will be relocated to the Nagambie Regatta Centre and the regular NOW activities will be held from this new venue at 66 Loddings Lane just off Vickers Road out of Nagambie.

The event organisers feel that the change of venue and date will provide greater space for a weekend by more events and activities and entertainment whilst being able to maintain a COVID-19 safe area.

NOW is a COVID-19 safe event, QR code registration will be sought and if patrons are unwell, they are asked to stay at home.

The Festival will have a wide variety of favourite activities once again. Such as Go

Don Wilson has been a NOW Festival Park2Pub swimmer since its first inception in 2008.

He told the Gazette “I am pretty sure that the first one was in 2008, so this one should be my 15th Nagambie swim if my records are correct”.

Don has enjoyed swimming in long distances events in Europe and around Australia with other keen swimming folk but really enjoys taking part in the Nagambie annual event.

Local brews showcased

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL brewery Mog Brew hosted a special event for the launch of their pop-up summer tap room last weekend at Euroa Butter Factory and is scheduled to do it again next weekend.

Locals and tourists were able to come try Mog Brew’s beers while enjoying food cooked by resident chef Richard Hayes.

Mog Brew was founded three years ago by brothers Tim and Hamish Heal in Moglenemby.

Tim Heal said he was very happy of the community’s support and was looking forward to next weekend too.

“We are very excited and grateful to have this opportunity of showcasing our limited release brews, as well as wonderful local wines and seasonal cocktails, in such a beautiful place,” he said.

“We also are happy to put something on for the locals and enable them to get together around a good beer and delicious food.

“People were happy so we are happy too.”

Mr Hayes said he was happy to cook for the event.

“I enjoyed cooking and supporting this local initiative, as it is exciting to see locals doing great things,” he said.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL GOULBURN Valley Libraries always have fun workshops and activities to offer to their youngest readers, especially during school holiday to keep them busy, with their BIG Summer Read program.

This fun program is aimed to help children continue reading while having fun during school holidays.

Marg Maconachie, branch officer-in-charge at Euroa Library, said he was looking forward to the event.

“The Euroa Library will also be running a School Holiday Activity today at 10am,” he said.

“This time we’re making 3D wild animal masks.

“In this session children can spend some time in the library colouring, playing with collage and experimenting with textures to create a wild animal mask to take home.

FUN TIMES: Take part to the BIG Summer Read program by getting in touch with local branches of Goulburn Valley Libraries.

“Complete an activity in the BIG Summer Read by reading a book while wearing your mask.

“Also, families can call in at any time during the holidays to collect take-home craft packs (also on the ‘wild

animal’ theme), or they can stay in the Library to do their craft pack.”

Brumby carnage is not based on numbers: MP WODONGA-based Liberal state MP Bill Tilley is calling for an end to the State Government’s “slaughterfest” of brumbies in the Alpine National Park.

He said visitors to the Eastern Alps reported 40 horses were shot in one location in mid December, while others say horses are being shot and covered with branches to hide the evidence, while deer and pigs are left in the open and uncovered.

Mr Tilley has questioned the basis for aerial and ground shooting of horses in the high country, noting the government’s recently released “Protection of the Alpine National Park: Feral Horse Action Plan” doesn’t quantify the number of brumbies left following the 2020 bushfires.

“In May the Minister wrote to me saying that an aerial survey was part of the process that Parks Victoria would use in its brumby management plan and yet there is no reference to that survey or current numbers in the latest piece of

“It’s more humane and less costly than shooting from a helicopter and then chasing the wounded to shoot them again.”

10 years of Euroa Village Farmers Market

ANNIVERSARY: The Euroa Farmers Market has been in existence for the past decade, thanks to the ongoing support of the community.

You know what variety of garlic is in season or how well the beetroot was growing as that was what the producer had on the table.

The Rotary club set up a barbecue in the middle of the park each month. The market has plant stalls for the many gardeners in the areas, local and exotic plants, seedlings and advice.

Coffee and food vans encourages people to sit and relax under the beautiful trees in

the park, to meet and socialize in between or after shopping.

Craftspeople started small businesses selling at the market each month getting positive feedback and regular customers.

Local community groups are involved in the market.

Raffle tickets sold, cakes stalls and trailer loads of wood are regular sites at the market.

Local groups arrange events around the market knowing that lots of people

would be in town.

Those same events use the market for promotion and fundraising.

All while supported and managed by the members of the Rotary Club of Euroa.

All the members volunteer their time to put the market on in the park.

They store all the tables, chairs, signs and barbecue and set them up each month for this event to operate, they do so knowing that monies raised at the market through the barbecue profits and the site fees go back into the community through the many community projects that they run each year.

The Euroa Village Farmers Market has a reputation as a good ‘Foodie’ market that sells good quality products all locally sourced.

It is such a success that other farmers and community markets have been started in other towns in the shire and together there is now a

Euroa Village Farmers Market is in its 10th year in 2022.

The last two years have been tough and has caused cancellations and disruptions but farming still goes on and plants still grow and creative people are still creating so providing it is safe for all involved, the market will continue to provide a location for the producers to sell their products and as a meeting place for the community.

The Rotary Club of Euroa would like to thank the Victorian Farmers Market Association and the Shire of Strathbogie for their continuous and generous support but also the producers that attend each month and the businesses and community groups of Euroa and surrounding area for supporting the market.

ELEVEN years ago the Shire of Strathbogie had an idea, they wanted to have a farmers market.

Each town was looked at and community groups were approached but eventually the Rotary Club of Euroa put their hands up and with the help of the shire within a few months obtained a grant, secured a location, a coordinator, some local stallholders and they had created a market.

The purpose of the market is and will always be to provide a location for local primary producers to sell their produce to locals on a regular basis.

The market joined the Victoria Farmers Market Association who assist with marketing and connections and support the idea of good quality local fresh, seasonal produce sold to people who appreciated the effort and value of fresh produce.

At the market the public can talk to the producers of the items on the table, who can tell them the veggies or fruit were harvested that morning or the night before.

That the value-added products were made in home kitchens by loving hands and family recipes.

The producer can tell you where the bee hive had been and under what species of trees so you would learn about the different tastes of the honey.

You could discuss the recent weather and what effect it had on the hops or grapes with the beer brewers and wine makers because they live up the road.

And you can marvel at what that huge olive plantation can produce when you see and taste the different olive oil products.

You could talk about the lamb or pig sales from last week with the local pork producer and the cost of feed.

Another wet year with La Nina bringing heavy rainfalls

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL 2021 was a relatively wet year compared to previous years without La Nina summer, but its weather patterns were quite similar to 2020.

The Bureau of Meteorology had indeed at that time declared a La Nina had developed in the Pacific Ocean, meaning much of north and east Australia was likely to experience a relatively damp and stormy summer.

La Nina is part of a cycle known as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a naturally occurring shift

in ocean temperatures and weather patterns along the equator in the Pacific Ocean.

During La Nina, waters in the central or eastern tropical Pacific become cooler than normal, persistent south-east to north-westerly winds strengthen in the tropical and equatorial Pacific, and clouds shift to the west, closer to Australia.

In 2020, La Nina (Spanish for “the girl”) already caused a wet summer which led to flooding and heavy rainfalls.

Last year, 106.8mm of a monthly total rainfall fell in January, 19.4mm in February, 6.2mm in April,

56.4mm in May, 109.8 in June, 122.6mm in July, 32.2mm in August, 69.2mm in September, 65mm in October, 59.2mm in November, 44.mm in December.

The year of 2021 was thus still recorded as a humid year, with a rainy start of summer with low temperatures, which can be explained by La Nina.

La Nina is the counterpart to El Nino, Spanish for “the boy”, a weather pattern which leads to warmer weather and drought conditions.

El Nino and La Nina can both have global impacts on weather, wildfires, ecosys-

tems, and economies.

La Nina is also associated with greater cyclone activity and this is why last year the Bureau of Meteorology estimated in October that there was a two-in-three chance Australia’s region would have more than the seasonal average of 11 cyclones.

It is interesting to go back to the roots of El Nino and La Nina Spanish names, which were first used by South American fishermen.

They first noticed periods of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean in the 17th century.

Episodes of El Nino and La Nina typically last nine

to 12 months, but can sometimes last for years.

Compared to the previous year in April 2020, it rained less in 2021 as in 2020 it rained for a monthly total of 194mm.

On the other hand, in 2020, it rained less in June and July compared to the same months in 2021, as in 2020 the monthly rainfall for June was 68mm and in 2021 it was 109.8mm.

Same for July 2020, during which the monthly rainfall was 25.4 and in 2021 it was 122.6.

The summer months of 2021 remained quite wet for an Australian summer, com-

pared to the year of 2006, when the least rainfall fell during August, September and October (respectively a monthly rainfall figure of 18.8mm, 32mm and 2.2mm.

Since 2000, the month when it rained the less in Euroa was February 2008, as only 1mm fell.

The month with the most monthly rainfall recorded was in April 2020, when a monthly rainfall figure of 194mm was recorded.

The year which recorded the most rain in total was 2017 with 755mm of rain, and the year with the less rain was 2006 with a total of 288mm.

Christmas bowls tournament brings greens to capacity

By AUDREY MCINTOSH DESPITE the hot weather over the two days of the Christmas tournament the greens at Euroa were full to capacity and all bowlers enjoyed their days at the greens.

Although many of the regular bowlers who have played at Euroa for many years were not there this year some new faces graced the greens to enjoy the games of bowls.

President Neville Harris welcomed all to the greens and wished all seasonal greetings and thanked Euroa members for their good work in preparing the greens and surrounds etc for the two days, and tournament organiser Marc Stevens added his thanks also and gave the conditions of play on both days.

Visitors were present from Wunghnu, Mooroopna, Tatura, Bendigo, Shepparton Park, Stanhope, Avenel, Seymour, Violet Town, Sehpparton Golf, Nagambie, Seymour VRI and midweek players from Croydon, Leongatha, White Hills, North Richmond, and Murchison came down.

Former Euroa player Shane Whitelaw and 10 teams of Euroa players on both days came to play for trophies donated by the sponsors, who were on Tuesday, RBA Finances and PetroStar and on Thursday Burton’s IGA and Liquor, Murphy Motors and Elders.

These days cannot be the success they are without the sponsors and a big thankyou to everyone for their generosity.

First parkrun of the year brings big numbers out to stride THE Euroa parkrun started off the 2022 year with a bang, with the first event of the year welcoming fantastic crowds of keen runners.

Founded in 2018, the Euroa parkrun welcomes social runners’ weekly, drawing crowds anywhere from as small as 15 runners to a record 161.

The sporty social club gathers

every Saturday at 7.45am for a debrief and track explanation before kicking off their run, jog or walk at 8am sharp.

Rain, hail or shine the parkrun will always be run, with dogs and children welcome.

Run by passionate local volunteers, the parkrun holds an emphasis on social interaction and

fitness, and is a fantastic way to meet likeminded people in a positive atmosphere.

The Euroa parkrun is always looking for new volunteers, without which the weekly event would not run.

The competition level is left up to the individual, with a simple, easy to use phone app used

to track progress and compete against other runners.

Consistent runners can be rewarded online, with milestones to be reached to unlock parkrun merchandise; part take in 50 events and you will be able to purchase an exclusive parkrun t-shirt from their online store.

The fastest, most competitive

runners are completing the course in around 20 minutes, while some take the more leisurely, social approach and come in around the hour mark.

Regardless of times, everybody gathers at The Nest for coffee and breakfast at the completion of their walk, run or jog and absolutely all are welcome.

ANGLING GOFISH NAGAMBIE VICTORIA’S biggest fishing freshwater festival is set to lure thousands of visitors to Nagambie in 2022, thanks to support from the Victorian Government’s $20 million Regional Events Fund.

The four-day event will be held on the picturesque Goulburn River and Nagambie Lakes and feature a mixture of competitions, entertainment and exhibitions, including a showcase of the best local food and wine producers.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said “GoFish Nagambie is a fantastic part of our regional events calendar and provides another great reason for Victorians to hit the road and experience our great state”.

“GoFish Nagambie is set to draw thousands of anglers, fishing enthusiasts and visitors to the shores of the Nagambie Lakes and will help reconnect friends and families and benefit our surrounding communities,” Mrs Symes said.

Supported by Visit Victoria through the Regional Events Fund, the funding will help promote the Goulburn riverways and Nagambie region as a national destination for freshwater fishing and a great region to explore.

GoFish Nagambie has proven its ability to deliver a strong economic impact with the inaugural 2019 event attracting more than 7000 visitors - injecting $5.6

million to the regional area.

Despite the challenges of running an event in the landscape of a pandemic, the 2021 event delivered an economic impact of $6 million and attracted new visitors, with 30 per cent of participants never visiting the region before.

In addition to the fishing action, visitors can enjoy a range of family activities on site or extend the trip with a visit to a nearby winery or a wander through town to see out the statue of the legendary racehorse Black Caviar.

The Victorian Government is backing the return of a packed calendar of crowd-pleasing public events in regional and rural areas in 2022, bringing thousands of visitors and creating local jobs.

THE $20 million Regional Events Fund is a critical component of the $633 million Visitor Recovery and Reform Plan and supports festivals, sports events, creative exhibitions and other cultural celebrations.

THE Regional Events Fund will increase economic benefits to Victoria by driving visitor numbers and length of stay, thereby boosting spending in regional areas, growing jobs and contributing to the state’s reputation as Australia’s leading events destination.

SINCE 2016, the Victorian Government’s Regional Events Fund has funded more than 250 events across the state, bringing thousands of visitors to regional locations and supporting local jobs.

Eddie was a gentleman cricketer

By JOHN GILBERT EDWARD ‘Eddie’ Asquith was a right hand medium fast bowler noted for his economy, who could move it both ways through the air and off the wicket.

He was good enough to take at least 38 five wicket hauls and a hat trick.

His personal best was 9/27 for the Wanderers against Euroa in March 1958 which was during the semi-final, first Innings at the Memorial Oval.

He was a handy righthanded batsman not known for long stays at the wicket.

He was also a man who was lucky enough to be a seven times premiership player for three different clubs.

Eddie Asquith started with the Euroa Juniors Club in the Euroa and District Cricket Association (EDCA) B grade competition in 1949/50.

He played with them for four seasons, playing in a premiership side in his second season 1950/51 and the team was runner-up the following season.

For the 1953/54 season he moved over to the Euroa Blues team still playing in the EDCA B grade.

In the 1955/56 season he moved up to the EDCA A grade, playing with the Wanderers Club.

In his six seasons at the club, he was lucky enough to play in four premiership sides.

After a little club upheaval, he moved on to the United Friendlies Society (UFS) club for the 1961/62 season.

The UFS morphed into the United Cricket Club for the 1967/68 season.

This team was good enough to win two premierships with Ed Asquith as part of the story on 1967/68 and 1969/70.

After the 1970/71 season he retired.

During his playing career he was good enough to represent the EDCA at the highest level of representative cricket from 1955 to 1967.

His best bowling effort was at the Benalla Ensign Cup in 1958/9 when he took 6/45 against Benalla in 1958 at the Benalla Gardens

OUTSTANDING: Eddie Asquith’s personal best for bowling was 9/27 for the Wanderers against Euroa in March 1958.

He was a regular member of the EDCA Melbourne Country Week squad 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/8 (Premiers),1958/9, 1959/60 (runners up), 1960/61, 1961/2, 1962/3 and 1963/4.

From the 1964/65 season

he became the scorer and assistant manager and performed these tasks until the 1970/71 season.

In his spare time when not engaged in the game, he umpired finals and representative games including the 1960/61 - A Grade

Grand Final, 1961/2 - A Grade Grand Final, 1962/3 - A Grade Grand Final and NE Cup games - 1967/8 and 1968/9 (including 1968/9 the final).

He picked up several trophies on his cricketing journey.

In his first year at the Euroa Juniors, he picked up the Best and Fairest -1949/50 and followed it up with the bowling trophy in 1951/2 (46 wickets at 6.1).

He again won the bowling award in 1952/3 (55 wickets at 6.5).

At the Wanderers in 1955/56, Eddy was good enough to win the EDCA Bowling Award with an average of 7.1.

While at the United Club he also picked up the 1969/70 bowling trophy (27 wickets at 11.5).

Eddie had a couple of stints as team captain.

In his younger days he skippered the Euroa Juniors club for the 1952/53 season.

Later in his career he led the EDCA number two side in the North-East Cup competition for the 1963/64 season.

A man not noted for his batting, Eddie holds a couple of records.

He was in the ninth wicket partnership of 76 runs for the United Club against Strathbogie in the grand final at the Memorial Oval on March 11, 1968.

His innings of 28 in a partnership with Peter Seymour enabled the team to score 186 and go on and win the premiership.

The ninth wicket record is for the United Cricket Club and the same for the Memorial Oval.

Long-term Euroa residents will remember Eddie who was a very familiar fellow in Burton’s grocery department where he worked for many years.

He was also a long-term member of the Euroa SES. (Editor’s note: With thanks to the efforts of John Gilbert, the cricketing achievements of many local batsmen and bowlers will now, never be forgotten.

They ranged over all age groups which is a great achievement for Euroa Cricket Club.

U13A day one saw Cricket Shepparton#1 8-133 defeat Murray Valley 123.

Ollie Swain was a solid bat making 16 not out.

In the team#2 CS 3-139 defeated Goulburn Murray 5-133Ethan Saxon 0/2 and a catch.

Day two saw CS#1- 66 go down to Sunraysia 8-165 with Jack Walters 0/11 and Ollie Swain 0/25.

Ollie Swain top scored with 12 not out.

CS #2 132 were defeated by Bendigo 8-150.

Ethan Saxon made 13, being third top scorer.

Day three CS #1 5-118 defeated Bendigo 3-116.

Ollie Swain was once again in the top scorers making 14.

As a result of these solid performances CS met Bendigo in the grand final.

Darby Wilson bowled well once again ending up 3/28 and Cohen Paul getting a catch in his contribution to CS win.

Final scores CS 4-182 defeating Bendigo 75.

CS were pronounced U16 premiers.

Euroa Cricket Club would like to say well done to all the players.

Being selected and playing in an association representative side is a testament to their abilities and a reward for lots of hard work.

Their influence helps to shape the abilities and attitudes of these young players.

Tony Rohrlach successful at Euroa’s championship event

By JOHN KING THE Euroa Clay Target Club opened the 2022 shooting program with three events at the Violet Town Shooting Complex on Sunday, January 9.

With Covid protocols in place some 27 competitors entered the day’s shooting and some of the scores were good.

Both championships on offer were won by Euroa shooters with Craig Asquith outshooting Paul McKendrick and Robbie Fitzpatrick in the double barrel event.

The main event, the North East Zone Mixed Target Championship went Tony Rohrlach after a shoot-off with Colbinabbin’s Lee Fitzgerald.

Finally Paul McKendrick

came home with a win in the Trophy Handicap event after a very short shoot-off with Robbie Fitzgerald.
