NET ZERO GOAL Council supporting State Government to halve emissions byy 2030 STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has pledged its support to help the Victorian Government to halve state-wide emissions by 2030 as part of its target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Victorian councils are expected to play an important role in the collective efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and to respond and adapt to climate impacts.

Strathbogie Shire Council has developed a reputation for making decisions centred around sustainability, with several climate related initiatives being enacted in recent times.

A climate emergency was declared by the shire in 2021, with councillor Sally Hayes-Burke describing the

need to address the issue at the time.

“The risk is too great for us to sit back and not do anything, and we as council should not be prepared to take that risk,” Cr HayesBurke said.

Since then, council has been involved in projects such as Greening Euroa, an innovative community driven project that will use recycled water to irrigate public green spaces during the summer months.

Regular climate workshops, featuring experts from across the globe, have also been held at the council building.

More recently, the shire adopted their Climate Change Action Plan after a period of community consultation.

Keeping the lights on in the region ENERGY security for people living in Avenel, Nagambie, Longwood and Kirwans Bridge will be the focus of a $500,000 business case from the Liberal Party.

Currently, the region is plagued by blackouts during critical times, such as during natural disasters or extreme heatwaves.

A local benefactor donated funding to develop a solar system microgrid in Avenel consisting of 11 households earlier this year, and additional funding for a business case will allow smaller communities to take a step towards energy security.

Shadow Minister for Energy David Southwick outlined the importance of

energy security for rural communities.

“It’s essential regional towns have a reliable energy supply and know the lights will turn on when they flick the switch,” Mr Southwick said.

“The poor supply situation around this part of central Victoria puts lives at risk in the hot summer months and during natural disasters, like we’ve seen in the past.

“The Liberals are committed to providing Victorians with energy security and confidence in the system.”

Liberal candidate for Euroa Brad Hearn said the investment was an example of straightforward but crucial governance.

“This investment and business case will provide a pathway to real solutions for people across the region who suffer under ongoing blackouts and disruptions to their energy supply,” Mr Hearn said.

“The Andrews Government has ignored the heart of regional Victoria for eight years and it is time for positive change in our region to see real results.

“The Liberals will support measures that place downward pressure on the cost of living for regional Victorians, we want to see more affordable energy that you actually get delivered to your home - not increases in personal generator usage, we deserve better.”

Council supporting State Government to halve emissions by 2030 ■

HALVING EMISSIONS: Strathbogie Shire Council has pledged to support the Victorian Government in its quest to reach net zero emissions, with plans to halve shire’s own emissions by 2030.

From page 1 Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said pledging support was a nobrainer for council who recently adopted its Climate Change Action Plan.

“Our council unanimously voted to declare a Climate Emergency in 2021,” she said.

“Our plan details actions such as council’s corporate target for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and transitioning to a fully electric passenger fleet by 2030.”

Council endorsed its Climate Change Action Plan 2022-27 in August this year following many months of work with the community to understand

their priorities.

“Council is serious about mitigating against the risks that climate change pose for the social, economic, and environmental prosperity of our community,” Cr Binks said.

“We believe leadership is needed on this issue.”

Council’s plan aligns with many of the actions set out in Victoria’s Climate Change Strategy which includes the interim target to halve state-wide emissions by 2030.

“The strategy being is supported by emissions reduction pledges such as our own,” Cr Binks said.

“It is critical that state and local governments work together to address

climate change given what the science tells us and the lived experience of its impacts on Victoria.”

The Strathbogie Shire sits among one of the most at-risk electorates for climate change damage.

In May, a Climate Council report declared that the Indi electorate was in the top ten electorates for climate change impact, in particular due to riverine flooding, bushfires and extreme winds.

The report declared that by 2030, one in nine properties would be uninsurable.

No decision on region’s specialist court

By RYAN MALCOLM AN operational specialist family violence court at Shepparton may yet remain the closest outlet for the North East, despite community-driven plans to establish a headquarters court in Wangaratta.

Northern Victoria state MP Tania Maxwell last month met with local stakeholders to investigate the impacts of family violence throughout the region, with each of Wangaratta, Benalla and Wodonga local government areas (LGAs) recording rates more than 50pc higher than the state average.

An advisory group was subsequently established, featuring representatives from Wodonga, Indigo and Wangaratta councils, as well as women’s health advocacy groups and local

legal services.

A cost proposal was put to State Government a fortnight ago, indicating $29.5m would be required to aid the renovation and training of specialist staff at a dedicated court in the region, which would in theory become the 14th operational specialist court in the state if greenlit between 2023 and 2026.

The 2016 Royal Commission into Family Violence recommended 13 headquarter courts be established throughout the state in order to manage rising domestic violence rates, with Shepparton the first to be formally opened in 2019.

A Victorian Government spokesperson said family violence had been a long-term focus of the incumbent government, but stopped short of promising the further expansion of specialist court facilities for

“We are working to protect victims of violence and hold perpetrators to account with unprecedented investment to end family

violence,” the spokesperson said.

“We meet regularly with those in the sector to discuss and understand what they need to keep people

safe and change behaviours around family violence.

“We’ve invested more than $3.7b towards implementing the recommendations made by the landmark Royal Commission into Family Violence.

“Following the statewide rollout of specialist family violence courts (SFVCs) all regions in Victoria will have a headquarter SFVC to provide support for their respective region.

“In the North East, the relevant SFVC is Shepparton.”

Attorney-general Jaclyn Symes outlined her desire to implement specialist services at all magistrates courts across the state during questioning in parliament in late-September, but admitted she was “confined by the reality of what you can deliver in government”.

Specialist courts include

separate entrances and exits, registry counters and safe waiting areas, and often work in conjunction with local magistrates’ courts to ensure trained magistrates are available at Wodonga and Wangaratta courts, according to the spokesperson.

Services such as Hume Riverina Community Legal Service (HRCLS), the Orange Door and the Centre against Violence (CAV) also provide significant support to victim survivors of family violence, however, both HRCLS and CAV admitted they had faced difficulty in meeting demand, subsequently joining the advisory panel.

Parliamentary operations are currently suspended ahead the November 26 election, with Ms Maxwell outlining her desire to further discuss the plans ahead of next year’s state budget.

Cheaper fares, more trains for regional Vic

By GUS RIDDER A DAILY return trip from Euroa to Southern Cross Station on the V/Line rail or bus service network will only cost $9.20 instead of $45.20 if Labor is elected at this month’s state election.

However, despite several other major regional lines set to receive extra services, no new announcements have been made for the Albury line.

The Labor Government has announced a $1 billion package aimed at delivering cheaper public transport fares, more VLocity trains and extra weekend services for the regional rail network.

Discussions about regional trains have become a major talking point ahead of Novem-

ber’s election, with the Coalition recently pledging to halve all V/ Line fares if elected.

As part of the regional rail package, Labor will: • cap the cost of a daily ticket on the regional network at $9.20 for a full fare ($33.80 Coalition pledge), or $4.60 for a concession ($16.90 Coalition pledge) the same price as a metro daily fare; • order new VLocity trains; and • add almost 200 extra weekend services on major train lines in regional Victoria.

Premier Daniel Andrews spoke about the impact this investment will have for Victorians in regional areas.

“Cheaper fares, comfortable trains and more frequent ser-

vices - that’s what matters to commuters across regional Victoria, and that’s what Labor will deliver,” he said.

Regional commuters who use a myki pass to travel between 28 and 365 days a year will also be capped at the Melbourne rate, currently $5.52 per day.

Currently, all regional fares are calculated based on the distance travelled.

A full-fare return ticket from Melbourne to Euroa is currently $45.20, while it costs $67.60 to make the same trip to Wangaratta.

Labor says these prices make it too expensive for families living in rural and regional Victoria to take the train to visit family and friends, or access vital health and education services

in other regional cities and Melbourne.

A re-elected Labor Government will also order 23 more VLocity trains to support rail upgrades across the rail network, in what they say will secure hundreds of jobs over the next three years.

Each VLocity train takes about 21 months to manufacture, with Labor suggesting 100s of jobs will be created across the supply-chain during this building process.

VLocity trains have recently been introduced on both the Albury and Shepparton train lines.

Rounding out their regional rail package, a re-elected Labor Government will deliver extra weekend services on the regional network.

Independent candidate Luke Downing intends to nominate and Greens candidate James Bennett had officially nominated.

They join Nationals candidate Annabelle Cleeland, Liberal candidate Brad Hearn and Labor candidate Angela Tough in contesting the electorate that was vacated by current Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan.

Luke Downing spoke of his intentions from a rented office on Euroa’s Binney Street last week, announcing he will be using the platform to call out the Andrews model of cabinet governance and explain the impact it is having on essential services.

“This is based around my experience and knowledge working with the Victorian State Government and Melbourne health establishment on Aged Care and Health reform over the past decade,” Mr Downing said.

“It’s so difficult to get anything done at the moment; obfuscation is the name of the game.

“It relates to the Andrews model of cabinet governance and how that’s been operating in the last eight years.

This project is of huge importance to the Euroa and surrounding communities and one that has been driven by our community. Not only would the trail ensure cyclists can enjoy the health and wellbeing aspects of the project, but it is also a fantastic drawcard for tourism with Balmattum Hill offering an incredible view of the Euroa township and surrounds.

We’re happy to be kicking goals through our advocacy work!

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has received State Government funding to complete a feasibility study for a Mountain Bike Trail on Balmattum Hill at Euroa.

The project was one of 38 to recently receive funding from the Victorian Government’s Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund (RJIF).

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the funding received would be used to carry out a feasibility study to determine all aspects of the potential trail.

“We are so pleased to have received $241,600 from the RJIF,” Cr Binks said.

“This project is one of huge importance to the Euroa and surrounding communities; we know it is something they have desired for a long time.

“It’s a partnership project with the community who has already undertaken considerable work to progress the concept of a mountain bike trail at Balmattum Hill.

“Not only would the trail ensure cyclists can enjoy the health and wellbeing aspects of the project, but it is also a fantastic drawcard for tourism with Balmattum Hill offering an incredible view of the Euroa township and surrounds.

RJIF delivers grants through three streams, including the Regional Jobs Fund, Regional Infrastructure Fund and Investment Fast Track Fund, covering projects from the planning stage through to completion.

Council received funding under the Investment Fast Track Fund stream in the latest round of the program.

LANDFILL DELAY: Strathbogie Shire Council has confirmed that rehabilitation works at the Violet Town Landfill site have been delayed due to poor weather.

Town landfill works delayed REHABILITATION works at the former Violet Town Landfill site have been delayed due to water and rain impacting access and the availability of necessary cover material.

The works will now start in mid-November with an expected completion date of early April 2023.

Council announced earlier this year that the rehabilitation would take place at a $2 million saving to ratepayers after they successfully applied for approval to have the site clas-

sified as low risk.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was an incredible result given the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) rarely approved this classification for rural landfill sites.

“The works included in the 2022/23 Budget will now cost $3 million, instead of the $5 million original estimate,” Cr Binks said.

Goulburn-Valley based contractor Apex Earthworks Pty Ltd was appointed to carry out the works.

Cr Binks explained that

the $3 million project was a requirement of the EPA and council was also required to manage the site, monitoring for leachate, groundwater, surface water and settlement for the next 30 years.

“Council is reminding the community there will be no risk or interruption while the works are being carried out,” she said.

Hours at the Violet Town Transfer Station will remain the same during the works and traffic will be redirected to avoid any impact to Transfer Station users.

Labor’s hospital funding criticised

By GUS RIDDER FUNDING for Euroa Health continues to remain a contested issue between the region’s major political parties, with Member for Euroa Steph Ryan disputing the recent commitment made by the Labor Government.

Ms Ryan has called on the State Government to put money on the table to keep the hospital open, rather than make minor funding announcements.

The call comes after the hospital received a visit from Labor representatives, including Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes.

During the visit, Ms Symes discussed funding the hospital.

“We are committed to assisting Euroa Health to serve their community now and into the future,” she said.

“The community of Euroa can be assured that under a Labor Government Euroa Health will not close.” $700,000 in funding was committed by the Labor Government, with the money going towards roof repairs, new rain tanks and an emergency communications system.

Ms Ryan said this announcement was another

example of the State Government deflecting from the hospital’s need for recurrent government funding.

“Funding from the Victorian Government for some hospital upgrades is absolutely welcome but to claim this has anything to do with keeping the hospital open is misleading,” Ms Ryan said.

“The hospital is facing a deficit of more than $700,000 this year on a regular basis due to a lack of public funding.

“A new roof won’t plug this hole in the hospital’s budget.

“Ms Symes has had the last eight years to provide funding to the hospital.

“Unfortunately, she has done nothing.

“I’ve raised the needs of Euroa Health in Parliament multiple times and with multiple Health Ministers who have all turned their back on the issue.

“Either Ms Symes is reading from the wrong talking points or she doesn’t understand that recurrent funding is different to a one-off minor grant for building works.

“The Andrews Government has cut $2 billion from health and would rather spend $35 billion on a rail loop no one asked for than

Police investigate incident in Yea POLICE are investigating the alleged theft and damage to a mobility scooter.

Yea police have confirmed they have received a report from a Yea resident alleging his mobility scooter was stolen and damaged in Yea by several residents from Euroa.

Music festival brings crowds to Euroa OVER 1100 music lovers visited Euroa over the weekend to attend the Euroa Music Festival.

Binney Street was transformed into a musical spectacular as some of Australia’s best performers hit the stage.

Event organisers had to change plans late with the recent floods impacting the grounds at Leo’s Park by the Seven’s Creek.

“We were just 10 days out and with safety in mind we were unable to hold the event at the site where we held the festival last year,” festival director Adam Palmer said.

“After discussions with the council and the business owners down Binney Street, we were given permission to stage the event in Binney Street.

“We are just so truly grateful of the support we received from local traders and the Strathbogie Council who were crucial in assisting us get the

Search for missing man at Euroa EUROA Police are currently searching for Kenny Freeman who has been reported as missing and are appealing for public assistance to help local him.

The 49-year-old, who recently moved to the Euroa area, failed to log on for work on Monday, October 31.

The last contact with Mr Freeman was on October 21.

Police and family are concerned for Mr Freeman’s welfare as his disappearance is out of character.

Kenny is described Caucasian in appearance, about 180cm tall, with an athletic medium build, and shaved brown hair.

He is originally from Canada but has lived in Australia for about eight years.

Prior to moving to Euroa he resided in Melbourne.

He is believed to be travelling on his black Yamaha YZER3 motorcycle, bearing Victorian registration 2E-1FI. Police believe it is possible he travelled in the Strathbogie area in recent days.

Science for all ages at fair SCIENCE is everywhere and this was made clear at Euroa Secondary College during their year 9 Science Fair.

The fair was devised to help awaken the love for all things that are amazing, awesome and to be discovered in life.

The day was comprised of young-adult minds sharing their knowledge in science with even younger minds from across the shire.

Euroa Secondary College’s year 9 students, together with their science teachers, had spent days organising their diverse array of scientific experiments to entice and engage the students from the local primary schools, St John’s, Euroa, Avenel and Nagambie.

It was through the diligence and dedication of not only the year 9 students, but also the Euroa Secondary College’s year 9 science teacher Matilda Murrihy, in collaboration with Judy

Nicholls, that the day provided loads of entertainment for the young visitors who went from one display to the next.

From Ms Murrihy’s reaction to the day it was clear that it was not only the children that had a great time.

Ms Murrihy expressed a big thank you to Madeline McClusky, college junior school leader, who was crucial in organising the participation of the Strathbogie Shire, the primary school students and their teachers at the Science Fair.

“The Science Fair was a great opportunity to reconnect with the primary schools in our local shire,” Ms Murrihy said.

“It was a way for the year 9 students to demonstrate to young students the large amalgamation of skills the students have learnt over the past three years at Euroa Secondary College.

“Sometimes it can be tricky to communicate science to the wider world, particularly to those who are not aware of how science is part of everything around and including us,” Ms Murrihy said.

“The purpose of the Science Fair was to encourage secondary students in their learning and to motivate future students; the lollies provided by the Euroa Secondary College Year 9 students on their displays did help to entice the younger students.”

The reaction from the Euroa Secondary College students to the enthusiasm shown to all their hard work was clearly evident as they embraced the many questions from the younger students.

“The older students enjoyed talking about the displays they had put together,” Ms Murrihy said.

“It is important to remember to applaud all the hard work the Euroa Secondary College students had put in to making the Science Fair a success.”

Ambulance response times across Strathbogie continue to miss target QUARTERLY data has demonstrated a trend of worrying response times for ambulance services across the shire.

Across Strathbogie the average Code 1 response time is 25 minutes 55 seconds, over 10 minutes above the target time, with just 27.1 per cent of ambulances arriving on time.

Compared to the same quarter in 2021, the average ambulance is taking nearly four minutes longer to arrive during emergencies.

Additionally, Strathbogie response times have worsened for three consecutive quarters.

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said the State Government is failing Victorians in their time of need.

“Sadly, we are seeing the crisis in our triple zero system continue, with response times considerably worse than when the Andrews Government came to power,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Too many regional Victorians have lost their lives waiting for someone to pick up the phone or waiting for an ambulance that doesn’t arrive on time.

“Reports pre-dating the

pandemic outlined extensive issues in the triple zero sector, but they sat on the Minister’s desk collecting dust.

“This simply shouldn’t be happening in modern day Victoria.

“Nothing is more important than making sure people can get the healthcare they need when they need it.”

Ms Cleeland outlined the Nationals commitment to properly fund Victoria’s health system.

“Our emergency service workers do an incredible job, but they need further support to allow them to meet dispatch targets and continue saving lives,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Rather than spending $35 billion on a city rail loop no one asked for, The Nationals will redirect every available cent to fixing the state’s health crisis.

“The Nationals will invest $125 million to ensure triple zero calls are answered on time and an ambulance is dispatched.

“Our priorities are clear.

“The Nationals will get back to doing the nuts and bolts governing that has been missing in Victoria over the last eight years.”

AMBULANCE WAIT TIMES RISE: Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has discussed the worsening ambulance wait times for the Strathbogie Shire.

GMW extends deadlines for flood victims GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) is extending payment deadlines and prioritising customer credit refunds to customers impacted by the floods.

“We understand the impacts that recent floods can have on our customers’ properties and businesses and we would like to reassure them that support is available as part of our flood recovery program,” flood incident and recovery general manager Daniel Irwin said.

For flood-affected customers who pay their fixed charges accounts in full, GMW

has extended the payment due date by two months to February 16, 2023.

“We are also replacing any water entitlement records and statements free of charge, and can send to an alternative address if required,” Mr Irwin said.

“Our hardship and flexible payment options continue to be in place and we are prioritising customer credit refunds.”

Drivers show caution near floods THE RACV has urged Victorian motorists to exercise caution on the road after heavy rain and flooding continued across the state in the past weeks.

Heavy rain has contributed to flooding on regional roads, as well as causing potholes, presenting hazards for car drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists.

RACV head of policy James Williams said it was important road users were aware of the changed conditions brought about by the extreme weather event.

“Victorians would be acutely aware of how quickly weather conditions can change - they would also know that the recent storms can have a significant impact on our roads,” Mr Williams said.

Rain is a key factor in how potholes form, and the severe weather as a result of a La Niña weather phase has caused the damage to be significant.

RACV is urging caution for motorists encountering potholes, which can pose a safety hazard and cause damage to your vehicle.

“If you do encounter trouble while out on the road, you’ll be in safe hands with your coverage under RACV’s Emergency Roadside Assist,” Mr Williams said.

Silvia Morris, senior instructor for RACV Drive School, said the dangers of potholes should not be underestimated.

“Large potholes have the potential to cause severe damage to your tyres, wheels, suspension, exhaust and/or vehicle body, and in some cases can even lead to drivers losing control of their vehicle,” Ms Morris said.

“Even small ones can cause wear and tear to your vehicle’s suspension and steering which can be costly.

“When you do encounter a pothole, avoid sudden breaking and dangerous swerving into oncoming traffic.

“Keep a firm control of the steering wheel - which can be jolted with impact.

“If you do hit a pothole and you’re concerned about potential damage to your vehicle, pull over to a safe space and contact RACV Emergency Roadside Assist on 131111 for assistance.”

Flooded roads and deep puddles are also a factor following rain.

“Some puddles can be hiding large potholes underneath them, so you should avoid driving over puddles where possible, and never drive through floodwaters,” Ms Morris said.

AVOID FLOODWATERS: The RACV has warned Victorian drivers of the dangers of driving in flood-affected areas.

“Eye sore” has Violet Town residents reeling

By GUS RIDDER VIOLET Town residents and visitors have made the unkempt appearance of Cowslip Street’s gardens a key topic of discussion.

The recent announcement that Euroa was voted the tidiest town in Victoria has the rival community wondering why more has not been done to improve the town’s aesthetic.

Numerous weeds have been growing in gardens in the centre of the main street and there are now wild oats coming into head.

Wild oats are considered by gardeners and farmers alike, as an undesirable and bad weed.

The town of flowers, whose street names include references to roses, tulips, daisies and lilies, is disappointed with the appearance of their main street and is calling on more to be done to fix the issue.

At a recent meeting of the local community, facilitated by the Violet Town Action Group, the town was told by

the guest speaker to “sell the local story of the town and its achievements”.

Violet Town Café owner Gary Abley used the opportunity to speak out about the condition of the local gardens.

“The weeds growing in the main street of Violet Town is a real eye sore,” he said.

“We get many Visitors and Locals commenting on how bad the upkeep of the main street is.

“The wild oats and other weeds will soon be a fire hazard in summer.

“We pay an enormous amount of rates and we can hardly expect the local volunteers to weed the main street from a safety and workload perspective.

“It just looks shocking for Violet Town, which is meant to have a theme of flowers with so many of our streets named after flowers.”

Local farmer and well known Violet Town community volunteer and identity Bruce Cumming said the weeds were preventing tourists from enjoying what the

town has to offer.

“Cowslip Street, is the main street of Violet Town, and a key thoroughfare for travellers and interstate tourists, and of course is the main meeting place for locals,” he said.

“If we are to attract people to stop and shop, or to visit important attractions like our Southern Aurora gardens, the main street needs to look and be attractive.

“Unfortunately at the moment it doesn’t look good, and travellers have mentioned the need for garden maintenance to me.

“Action is needed soon before weed-seeds set, and create problems for next year.”

Community to turn out to honour our fallen ALL Victorians have an opportunity to honour and remember the brave Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations on Remembrance Day - Friday, November 11.

The Euroa RSL branch will host an event outside their building on Kirkland Avenue, with the Last Post set to play at 10.45am on Friday.

“We will never forget the courage and sacrifice of all those men and women who served and continue to serve this nation in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Minister for Veterans Shaun Leane said.

“Remembrance Day provides a special opportunity to honour the bravery and service of those who have fallen and reflect on the sacrifice of the veteran community.”

Everyone can observe a minute’s silence wherever they are at 11am on the day - a tradition that marks the moment on November 11, 1918 when the guns fell silent on the Western Front at the end of the First World War, the first moment of peace in four years.

The annual Remembrance Day Service will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance on November 11 from 10:30am, and it will be live-streamed via the Shrine’s web page, Facebook and YouTube channels.

Veterans, war widows and current defence members can travel for free on public transport to these services, includ-

Leading up to Remembrance Day, the Shrine of Remembrance is also offering 11 Days of Remembrance, which includes a Lest We Forget light installation and Red to Remember, which will see the Shrine and other Melbourne landmarks light up red in the 10 days leading up to Remembrance Day. Victorians can show support for the veteran community by buying and wearing a poppy through RSL’s Poppy Appeal in the lead up to Remembrance Day. For more than 100 years, the Poppy Appeal has raised funds used by RSL to support Australian veterans and their families when they need it.

Poppies are available for purchase at local RSLs, participating Woolworths and Officeworks stores and from volunteers in the local community.

Brook family chronicles handed over to museum

By GUS RIDDER THE Brook family has donated a book chronicling their family history to the Euroa Historical Society at a handover on Monday afternoon.

Written by Jenny Debney, a Brook family descendent, the book follows the history of the family and their move to Victoria from West Yorkshire in 1844.

This is the second book about the family’s unique and storied history, with the first being compiled by Jim and Margaret Brook in 1990.

“We did the first family history over 30 years ago,” Margaret Brook said.

“Since then, a lot more has happened and we’ve found out a lot more about the past.

“Our daughter Jenny has worked incredibly hard to create this edition.”

“The book goes back to the middle 1600s and life in the United Kingdom before Richard Brook came over as a convict,” Jim Brook said.

Research for the initial book involved looking through the vast public records in Victoria, writing letters to various organisations in the United Kingdom and visits to parishes overseas.

The book celebrates 177 years since Richard Brook arrived in Van Diemen’s Land as a convict, 168 years since the

marriage of Richard to Maria Whorwell, and 133 years since the marriage of Richard and Maria’s sixth son Herbert to Annetta Kibble in Longwood.

Richard was sent to Van Diemen’s Land as a convict due to “wilful and corrupt perjury in a testimony”, for

which the sentence was seven years transportation.

Friday street party kicks off a festive weekend

THE Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce held a free street party to launch the Euroa Music Festival on Friday night.

The event had plenty of activities for all ages, including a battle of the bands competition, street food, local stalls from vendors including wineries and breweries, and plenty of fun

games for children.

Binney Street was locked down and covered with sculptures from renowned Longwood artists Steve Tobin and Tank, known locally for the blue wren that graced Euroa’s Seven Creeks park.

Local residents seemed pleased with the festivities on

Friday, with Brendan Paterson one of many locals to support the event on the community noticeboard.

“Nice work with the Street Party tonight,” he said.

“People enjoying Binney St after 6pm on a very pleasant weather-wise Friday, with youngsters getting the oppor-

tunity to perform in front of an audience.

“All for free, please repeat.”

The free initiative, arranged by the Chamber, brought significant traffic to the local Euroa businesses, many of which stayed open beyond usual opening hours to cater to the influx of visitors.

HALLOWEEN: Modern Halloween customs of dressing up as spooks, witches, wizards and such seem to be happening in Australia more often now.

I attended the Nagambie Historical Society’s night last week and saw the fun the children and families had there.

I was brought up with a different reason for Halloween or Hallowe’en (less commonly known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve) is a celebration observed in many countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.

Each year in my church we recall our loved ones who have passed away and pray for them.

Cleeland throws gets behind Nagambie Healthcare THE Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has visited Nagambie Healthcare after announcing recurrent state funding for community owned hospitals if the Coalition is elected.

Nagambie Healthcare and Euroa Health are both community owned, as a result they don’t receive the standard recurrent funding to meet operational costs from the Victorian Government.

Ms Cleeland outlined the importance of Nagambie Healthcare to the community.

“The team here at Nagambie Healthcare are incredibly dedicated and deliver high-quality care day in day out,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Due to the lack of financial support from the State Government Nagambie Healthcare has had to diversify its field of service and has become a really dynamic environment.

“While they are doing an amazing job, it’s crucial they have a government that has their back rather than constantly planning new revenue streams.

“Sheila Brandie has taken over as CEO and has really hit

“There are just a handful of community owned hospitals left across the state, of which Nagambie is one,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The Nationals in government will provide recurrent funding to Nagambie to assist with operational costs and ensure they have the long-term security and backing they deserve.

“We will boost investment in

healthcare by diverting every cent available from the $35 billion Suburban Rail Loop to fix our health crisis and support great organisations like Nagambie Healthcare.

“Nothing is more important than ensuring people across our region can access the healthcare they need when they need it.

“This is my number one priority.”

Melbourne Cup enjoyed at Kelvingrove Village

By DIANE GRANT VILLAGE residents and guests came out in their glad rags and enjoyed the good company, good food and fellowship, and fun and frivolity at the Nagambie Kelvingrove Village Melbourne Cup lunch.

Over 30 attended the colourful race day event.

The annual event was held in their village hall and thanks to a good dozen volunteers the tables looked lovely with elegant table settings that fea-

tured Kay Hoef ’s floral and horse motif decoration bowls of Di Grant’s roses.

The races were able to be seen on the large screen and smaller televisions in the hall.

Residents Alan Gray and his wife Sue, and her twin sister Robyn and her husband Spinner celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on the day.

Alan Gray relieved patrons of their gambling money towards the races of the day, and the spinning wheel throws, and Margaret Rea made sure

most village folk and friends and family were in her Melbourne Cup sweeps.

Impartial judges chose Phil Hageman as the best hat of the day, Alan Gray as the best dressed man, Sonia AspinallStewart as best dressed Lady, Di Grant as best hat worn by a Lady, and Heather and Ron Bryant as the best dressed couple.

Each went home with a gold medallion for their efforts.

Some patrons went home went home winners and grin-

ners, and others not so, but all had a good day.

Lucky door prizes and a raffle prizes were shared around the various guests so not many went home empty handed.

Thanks to all who set and cleared up for the social event, who helped prepare the meal and served it, and thanks to all who supported the residents in lifting the COVID Blues.

Let’s hope the next year is a better one for us all.

More support for flood-affected FLOOD affected Victorians will get more help to continue their recovery from the recent flood events, with more than $152 million in further funding to help with housing, household bills, legal support and access to local services.

“Recovery takes time - we’ve been clear that we’re with communities for the long haul and will support them with whatever they need to stay close to their community and get back on their feet,” Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.

More than $15 million will help people who have complex needs and were displaced by floodwaters avoid becoming homeless through securing alternative accommodation and new tenancies.

It will also provide extra counselling and more family violence and case management services.

The funding will also go towards initiatives that encourage people to stay together such as playgroups, repairing Neighbourhood Houses and Men’s Sheds, and other family services.

Victorians whose uninsured houses have been severely damaged by floodwaters will also receive funding to make their place safer.

A funding package of more than $20 million will help councils assess the damage to houses and businesses so that the recovery can start as soon as possible, and expand the state-wide clean-up program to make houses including rentals and small businesses safe from hazards like asbestos or electrical faults.

More support to help pay for the necessities will be offered with one-off water bill rebates of $600 to urban customers who were inundated or had over-floor flooding, and $300 to other customers affected by flooding but not inundated.

Emergency hardship payments will be established for eligible temporary visa holders similar to the existing Personal Hardship Assistance Program (PHAP) of $580 per adult and $290 per child.

FLOOD FUND: $152 million in funding from the State Government will be allocated to help Victorians recover from the recent flood-events.

Temporary visa holders can apply for these payments if they are ineligible for the PHAP due to their home not being impacted by the floods but are unable to continue working due to flood impact at their workplace, and are ineligible for Federal income support or payments.

A further $15 million will go to the Council Flood Support Fund to allow 10 extra rural and regional councils to receive the $500,000 payment.

Additional funding will also be available for the most impacted councils to help them tackle the task of cleaning up and rebuilding.

More than $22 million will help establish up to 16 regional recovery hubs with

access to services to make sure people can keep getting in-person help for relief payments and other support they need.

The Flood Recovery Program will get an $11 million boost; helping more people to get support with housing, health and wellbeing, financial and legal counselling alongside practical assistance with accessing grants and completing paperwork, and advice for business owners whose livelihoods have been affected by the floods.

Almost $8 million will go towards helping Victoria Legal Aid, local Community Legal Centres and Aboriginal legal services offer important legal help to floodaffected people on matters like family

violence, housing and social security.

Aboriginal community-controlled organisations will also get $2 million to provide relief and assistance to flood-affected locals who need help.

An additional $13 million will be spent on making sure everyone who’s been affected by the floods knows what support is available to them, including for additional community workers at Emergency Recovery Victoria to provide greater access to available recovery support.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB AFTER three weeks of persistent rain, the sun finally made an appearance for a full day on Friday and forty golfers made an appearance on the golf course on Saturday.

On a course that hasn’t seen a mower on the fairways and rough for over three weeks due to the wet weather, golf became a game of search and destroy, search for your golf ball in the long grass and destroy as many mosquitoes that you could before they destroy you.

In a wise decision, the start of the club championship has been pushed back a week to commence next Saturday November 12 and the women’s starting on the following Saturday.

The stableford event held on Saturday was a true test of patience, golf skill and insect repellent.

Twenty three men played in demanding conditions with Matt Mills (0) playing an excellent round to win with 35 points from Gary Ritchie (11) on 33 points.

Of the seventeen women players, eleven played 18 holes and six played 9 holes.

Gail Allen (16) won the 18 hole comp with 28 points and Lorraine Ellis (21) took out the nine hole comp with 13 points on a count back from Jenny Thompson (23).

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on Monday, November 14 commencing at 7.30pm at the clubhouse and we would like to see as many members as possible to attend.

Giggle ‘n golf commenced on Sunday and it was great to see quite a few women out having a go at golf, some for the first time.

AVENEL BOWLS CLUB WEEKEND PENNANT IN round four of GVPA weekend pennant both Avenel teams found the going tough recording big losses.

Division seven played Rushworth away and were unable to master the synthetic green losing 0 - 25 to Rushworth 14 - 57.

While division three played Seymour at home and were subject to a bowls master class from the visitors 18 - 129 to 0 - 80.

The division seven rink of Ross Sinclair, Marion Gittus, Roy Cooper, Graham Lewis (s) were ten shots down winning only three ends before smoko. Winning six of the last eight ends, bought them within one shot of their opponents with the last end to be played. However, Rushworth prevailed to win the last end by one shot and winning the game 18 - 20.

The other division seven rink of Kyle Pedder, Rusty Schwab, Norm Billingsley, Graeme Toy (s) were never in the hunt winning only six ends and playing the second half of the game with three bowlers after third Norm

Billingsley took ill early in the game and retired ill at smoko. The final score of 37 - 7 was a percentage boosting win for the home team.

In the division three game, Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy, Spud Furletti, Noel Slater (s) were 12 shots down at smoko. Even though they won the second half by two shots they were unable to haul in the deficit.

Seymour won the game 30 20.

Donna Rowley, Dennis McGregor, Howard Geldard, Jake Wall (s) also lost by ten shots. Avenel had the lead for seven ends mid game before Seymour scored 17 shots in four ends after the break.

There was a glimmer of hope by end 21 with Avenel only four shots down. But Seymour won the last four ends to claim the win 34 - 24.

Despite winning one more end than Seymour, James Wall, Kate Donovan, Josh McDonald, Brett McDonald (s) lost their game 15 - 27.

Seymour simply bowled more consistently and had multiple scoring shots at the head on their winning ends.

Ruth King, Pam Pedder, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) lead for most of the first half until the last end before the break when Seymour scored a four to take a three shot lead.

After smoko Seymour powered ahead scoring 22 shots in eleven ends for a convincing win 38 - 21.

MID WEEK PENNANT Playing only two games from the first five weeks due to washouts and the Melbourne Cup, all bowlers are keen to get the mid-week pennant season underway again.

In round four Avenel division five play away at Colbinabbin and in round six division three play Numurkah on their home green.

Last Sunday’s chicken run sponsored by Mayfair Drapes was won by Marion, Noel and Dennis who took the honours by one shot after a super end to decide the winner.

The draw for the ladies and men’s singles club championship is on the noticeboard.

Round one must be played by 13 November.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB ONCE again the weather and ground conditions made it very challenging for the volunteer ground staff preparing the Nagambie golf course, but it was presented in fine condition due to the dedication and hard work executed by the team.

The lush cover of grass and charming weather made for some ideal scoring on Sunday’s stableford event with Ben Cassar was the runaway winner smashing out 41 points in what was an impressive return to form; big bombing Ben demolished the course leaving his playing part-

ners in awe.

A tightly packed leader board was what was left fighting out the minor placings with three scores all on 37 points after a countback it was Lindsay Hall that emerged to claim runner up, beating home the ever consistent Dean Brown and the soon to be dominant Ryan Ezard.

The nearest the pin prizes went to David Love with a spectacular shot that looked like an ace most of the way on the third, and our days winner Ben Cassar capping off a dominant display going to six inches on the 140m par three ninth hole.

This coming week we hope to open up more holes on the course for play, so hopefully an extend sequence of holes will be contested at next week’s McPherson Wines sponsored 4BBB, hit off is now 8am to 8.30am on office duty will be S. Bryant and in the bar C. Roberts.

CRICKET CRICKET ON THIS DAY 1920 - FORMER Euroa Gazette and Age reporter Percy Taylor had a day out for the Wednesdays club against Balmattum who were rolled for 48.

Taylor’s 7/10 in the first innings and Doctor Bill with five catches over the game made for a big win.

Roy Ford for Euroa took 6/28 against Ruffy and included the hat trick.

1954 - Violet Town gun bowler, Bruce Smith had a day out with the bat scoring 113 runs against Tamleugh with six sixers and five fours.

1965 - In A Grade Peter O’Donoghue scored 103 including seven fours for Strathbogie against Euroa at Memorial Oval.

The Creighton’s Creek V Violet Town fixture produced dueling bowlers with Mick Brown 6/14 for the Creek was beaten by the Towners John McIllwraith with 7/24.

In the B Grade Longwoods John King had a career best 8/41 against Tamleugh at Longwood.

1976 - Neil Byers the Violet Town gun bat scored a big 155* out of 3/290 against Longwood.

A mixed bag of pennant bowls results EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By AUDREY MCINTOSH THIS past Saturday bowls teams in the Goulburn Valley divisions were able to play again and the three Euroa sides, two bowling away and one home after the few weeks of flood damage throughout the region.

Division two travelled to Tallygaroopna and lost 91/114, division four also played Tallygaroopna except this match was played at Euroa with a great win to Euroa 124/77.

Three rinks winning and the other one only losing by one shot, and the division six travelled to Dookie and lost 35/57.

It was lovely to see Bob Whitelaw at the bowls club this Friday and we wish our raffle lady Sandra a speedy recovery.

MIDWEEK BOWLS MATCHES started again yesterday after having last week off for the Melbourne Cup, and division one were to play Hilltop at Euroa, division three travelled to Kyabram and division five were home to Violet Town.

Next Tuesday, November 15 division one will play at Kyabram, division three home to Nagambie and division five away at Colbinabbin.

Sun turns on the shine for tennis players FINALLY, the sun was shining and with a lot of work by our greenkeeper we were able to get seven courts up for Saturday’s round.

In division A Longwood played Benalla Lawn at Benalla.

The Longwood men of Bede Redfern, Jacob Tarran and Scott Meehan did exceptionally well, winning all 3 sets and being 14 games up before the mixed.

Longwood’s young ladies were no match for the experienced Benalla women but will improve as the season goes on.

Molly Redfern, Lilly Meehan and Stevie Mildren-Nicel all contributed in the mixed, however, winning all three sets and getting Longwood over the line by three games.

Gooram played Strathbogie who came to Euroa with fire in their belly.

Judy Sands, Julie Harrington and Kim McCabe all combined well going down 6-8, 6-7,6-8 and a tight afternoon.

Being a man short meant captain Chris Ellis stepped up and along with Mark Borthwick won the second men’s set in a tie breaker.

Unfortunately, that was the only ray of light for the

day as the return of Jason Everleigh and recruitment of Sarah Ternes to Strathbogie makes them a hard team to beat this season.

Strathbogie won by 37 games.

In the battle of the home teams Moglonemby played Euroa Lawn with Marlene Hanrahan and Robyn Johnson kicking it off with a comfortable win over Rowena Ellis and Melinda Creevey 8-3.

Grant Davey and Michael Nolan played Bob Furphy and Caid Miller, however, Bob went down with a calf injury after two games which devastated Euroa’s chances of winning.

In the absence of an emergency all Bobs sets were forfeited. Gayle Furphy was not letting the Furphy team down winning all her sets with Melinda, Row and then in the mixed with Barry Fischer.

Despite this Moglonemby walked away with a win by 21 games.

St Pauls played Terip at home with Faye Mollison and Megan O’Bree trouncing Terip 8-1, followed by Scott Watson and Jake Hill winning 8-2.

Megan O’Bree was outstanding winning 21 out of a possible 24 games along with captain Jake Hill win-

ning 18 games.

It was an all-round class performance from St Pauls as even last minute emergency Greg Rowe won all his sets.

St Pauls won by 46 games.

In division B, St Pauls two travelled to Swanpool on the hard courts and had a last-minute loss of one man and an emergency woman in Lisa Krepp playing her first match, so it was always going to be a tough game.

Congratulations to Lisa Krepp and Suzie Gall for winning St Pauls only set 8-6.

St Paul will be back on the winning edge shortly.

Craig Durkins Euroa team travelled to Tatong for an exciting game.

John Anderson and Craig kicked it off with an 8-7 whilst Kalarni Anderson and Indie Mildern- Nicel 8-5.

Craig along with Indie had an outstanding afternoon winning all three sets and although Euroa won more sets Tatong held on to a six-game win.

Longwood FNC receives funding commitment

By GUS RIDDER THE Longwood Football Netball Club will benefit from $150,000 in state funding if the Liberals and Nationals are elected to government in November.

The funding will allow the club to rebuild a dedicated netball shed to be utilised on game days and on training nights to create a more suitable netball precinct.

The club was unable to host a Kyabram District Football League final this year due to high rainfall and a lack of adequate drainage to make the ground safe for play.

Shadow Minister for Sport Cindy McLeish said the investment would be a welcome boost for the club.

“We know how important our local football netball clubs are and the vital role they play in regional communities,” Ms McLeish said.

“This commitment from the Liberals and Nationals is a small investment that will make a massive difference to the club.

“The Liberals and Nationals are passionate about

investing in local sporting clubs and providing the best facilities to keep Victorians active.”

Liberal candidate for Euroa Brad Hearn said country sporting clubs across the region need urgent investment, including those clubs that have risen to host finals within their league.

“The football and netball clubs across our region desperately need funding to bring their facilities up to scratch,” Mr Hearn said.

“Today’s commitment provides a real solution to the difficulty facing the Longwood Rec Reserve and fixing these issues.

“I will fight to ensure our region gets the investment it deserves after eight years of neglect.”

Longwood Football Netball Club president Ricki Shiner was optimistic about the announcement.

“It’s great news for the club,” he said.

“Obviously the drainage issue was highlighted this year with the wet weather we have experienced, but that being said all other grounds in our area are still in a football playing state

and we need to be no different.

“The female change facilities are well over due.

“Our female participation has grown enormously and that is why the club worked so hard to provide a second court to help cater for our growing numbers and in particular our juniors.

“This is a start, but a bloody good one.”

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland visited the club in September to see the issues facing the club firsthand.

“Ricki and his Redlegs team showed me just how important this investment is for the club after missing out on hosting a final this year,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Not only did the lack of drainage cost the club money but it also impacted local charities and community organisations like the CFA who rely on these events to fundraise.

“The Redlegs have a great reputation within the community.

“This playing surface upgrade and new shed will ensure they have the facilities to match their great spirit.”

Nagambie Little Athletics launches LITTLE Athletics Nagambie kicked off last weekend on Saturday, November 5 at 9am, hosted by St Joseph’s School Nagambie.

Little Athletics promotes that it is important to ‘Be Your best’.

The emphasis is on fun, participation, performance, technique and getting involved with family in healthy, physical activity.

Children can join with any level of skill or fitness.

Children are given plenty of encouragement to achieve personal bests (pb’s) and these will be celebrated each week.

It is the first time Little Athletics has existed in the town and was created after Louise McNamara (Now Vice President of the Club) and Clare Garrett (Now President of the club) identified a need in the town.

As parents, both were travelling to Seymour along with other local families and other clubs to participate in Little Athletics Clubs.

The pair reached out to the community and got an overwhelming response of excited families.

Once numbers and interest were determined, their

focus turned to fundraising.

After countless hours of research and work from Catrina Hutton (now club treasurer), it was estimated that it would cost $20-25,000 for all of the equipment necessary to start up a Little Athletics Club.

The ladies reached out to local businesses and almost all were willing to donate, from extremely generous large amounts up to $5,000 to $100, every dollar was very much needed and appreciated.

“We are so fortunate to live in a community that always digs deep for our families and especially for our kids and we will be forever grateful for this”, Louise McNamara said.

All of the money required was raised and more, which the club decided to invest into athletic wear for the athletes designed by local graphic designer Patricia Sporle from PSdezign.

Little Athletics is held every Saturday morning at St Josephs Primary School where Principal Maree Findlay has been supporting and supplying equipment, storage, BBQ’s and man power from the very start.

The first meet was last Saturday where over 60 participants turned up on the day.

The club would like to express a big thank you too all the parents and volunteers involved on the day, it’s a huge undertaking that needs many volunteers each week.

“I have to say a special thanks to all our committee members, Doug from LAVIC and especially Clare Garrett (President) and Catrina Hutton (treasurer) that have done so much work to get us to this point”, McNamara said.

If you are interested in joining the first two weeks of Little Athletics Nagambie is a come and try so kids can see how they enjoy it before committing to registration.
