THE 2021 Leadership and Innovation Winner of the Community Achievement Award has been won by community start-up ‘Strathbogie Local’.

The annual award ceremony, delayed due to COVID-19 lockdowns, was held at the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne last weekend.

Strathbogie Local is a volunteer start-up created to support local food producers and consumers in response to the Euroa Farmers’ Market closure throughout COVID-19 lockdowns.

Network online platform, they offer a “click and collect” food hub which allows customers to collect their weekly orders without leaving their vehicle.

Strathbogie Local volunteers have taken on the marketing, purchasing, sorting and distribution,

allowing local growers to focus on producing fresh quality products.

Shirley Saywell, cofounder of Strathbogie Local, said providing local producers, normally dependent on restaurant outlets and markets, with a reliable sales outlet, was key to the foundation of our click and collect drivethrough.

COVID-19 wiped out their regular sales base.

“We know the North East region grows so much that is sought after - exceptional olive oil, garlic, honey, wine, craft beer to name just a few,” Mrs Saywell said.

“With help from Euroa Rotary and the Open Food Network, we have managed to provide easy, safe and regular access to fresh quality products.

“We are immensely proud to have created an innovative community

enterprise, focused on some simple values; local business sustainability, food tourism, low food miles and community connections.”

Chloe Fox, local vegetable supplier and owner of Somerset Heritage Produce in Seymour, celebrated with the team and said Strathbogie Local represents a new way of distributing local produce and that’s easy and sustainable.

Ruffy memorabilia accepted by council

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL COUNCILLORS voted to approve a planning permit to change the use of an existing building in Ruffy at 22 Nolans Road to a Museum at its February ordinary council meeting.

Council accepted the planning permit because one of the overarching governance principles in section 9 of the Local Government Act 2020 is that Priority is to be given to achieving the best outcomes

for the municipal community, including future generations.

The applicant is Planography Pty Ltd and the planning permit was objected by two people, on the ground of the question of respect for the existing character which they inform as being unique rural ambience, quiet, peaceful, low key lifestyle.

The two objectors also didn’t look forward to being confronted daily by the ‘implements of war’ and would

like all memorabilia located within the shed.

They also requested the signage to have minimal visual impact among other objections.

“The site will be used as a Military Memorabilia Display and the building has previously been utilised in the past for an engineering business and associated storage,” Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said.

“A caretaker’s house and accommodation area will be

constructed on a first floor above the museum display area,” she said.

“Signage will be displayed, and car parking will be provided on-site.”

Sunnymeade Garden opens doors to public SUNNYMEADE Garden, Strathbogie was started from a bare paddock 35 years ago.

The garden has been designed and created by the owner Craig Irving with help from his family and especially his late mother Margaret.

Mr Irving has built all the stone walls and structures in the garden.

Early influences in the gardens design were the formal roomed English gardens of Hidcote and Sissinghurst.

Mr Irving loved the look of theses gardens and planted many hedges, having no idea at the time of the upkeep needed once they matured.

During Millennium drought Mr Irving looked to gardens of similar hot dry regions of the world for inspiration, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Plants native to these countries that need little if any irrigation were sourced.

Battin joins push for revamp

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL SHADOW Minister for Police Brad Battin has visited Euroa to assess the dire need for a new police station.

He joined Euroa MP Steph Ryan and they have both committed to push for an upgrade until the facility was significantly improved.

“After speaking to local community and to staff at the Euroa Police Station, I under-

stand some of the big issues with the station here are particularly around the interview room, the safety of Victorian police officers, and all areas where they have to arrest and hold people,” Mr Battin said.

“One of the discussions is around if you have someone on remand and they fire up, you’ve got no room to move and no room for safety or to lock them down.

“But more importantly at

the moment there is a big issue with domestic violence, where in this station you could end up with a victim and an offender so close to each other.

“It’d be very difficult for the victim to give the real story and in today’s world, we want to make sure that victims are heard.

“I think it’s really important that that is addressed.”

Mr Battin said he would continue campaigning and

talking to community members to make sure they would be heard.

“We will also continue raising the issue through the correct channels, as the government should be addressing this issue,” he said.

“It’s obviously been neglected for a long period of time.

“I’ll continue to work with staff on what’s the best options we can have for Safety Victoria Police, protecting victims

when they come through the police station and ensuring the community is protected in an adequate manner.”

Mrs Ryan said she was grateful for Mr Battin’s support.

“I’m really grateful to Mr Battin for coming up,” Mrs Ryan said.

“He has a really busy workload with both police and emergency services that he has responsibility for, I’m re-

Clean Up, a huge success for our planet THE Euroa Community Action Group organised the Clean up Euroa event on Sunday morning at the future Euroa Community Garden site in Euroa.

With almost 30 people in attendance, there were small groups cleaning up places including the Arboretum, Seven Creeks Park, Drysdale Road, Saxon Street, the underpass and railway precinct, showgrounds, Euroa Primary School, St John’s, and around the secondary college and Castle Creek.

A lot of ground was covered and we picked up almost 20 bags along with some bigger items including a broom, tyres, and metal.

It was great to see so many young families involved and they all did an amazing job getting out and about.

There was a lot of rubbish found along some of the main roads and is a good reminder that cleaning up Euroa is a daily practice, not an annual event.

The team found lots of plastic bottles and cans as well as face masks.

ECAG president Laura Baker said, “Clean Up Euroa was such a fantastic event and we wish to thank everyone for pitching in and making it a great day”.

“It is a great way to raise awareness we all have a role to play in keeping our spaces beautiful all throughout the year,” she said.

“It was so great to see so many young kids enjoying the event.

EPA deploys drones to assess activities AERIAL surveillance in the North East is set to expand, with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) implementing drones and other remote piloted vehicles to assess environmentally damaging activities.

Since the passing of the Environment Protection Act 2017 last year, new powers have seen EPA crews further diversify their evidence gathering kitbag, with drone pilot Matt Baronio the newest addition the North East team.

Summer Splash Series wraps up With the arrival of Autumn, Strathbogie Shire Council’s summer outdoor pool season will soon end − but there is a final pool party for youth in the popular Summer Splash Series.

Avenel, Euroa and Violet Town pools will close at the end of the Labour Day public holiday on Monday 14 March, and the Summer Splash youth event will be at the Violet Town Pool on Saturday, 12 March.

The Violet Town event will feature live music by Bad Ibis, YNOT and Inversion, Circus Cabaret, art activities, games, delicious food – and swimming.

Euroa Community Cinema revamp continues The Euroa Community Cinema renovation began in January and is funded by a $130,000 cultural and infrastructure grant from the Victorian Government.

The makeover began with re-sanding and polishing floorboards, and will include repainted walls, steam-cleaned drapes, in addition to spacious new seating and improved accessibility.

“Council and cinema volunteers are excited about providing a more comfortable, accessible, and inclusive movie experience for families and individuals of all ages and abilities when the cinema reopens, Cr Binks said.

The next meeting of Strathbogie Shire Council will be held on Tuesday 15 March 2022, at the Euroa Community Conference Centre, commencing at 6.00 p.m.

The gallery will be open to the public, however, members of the public who wish to attend must be fully vaccinated and will be required to provide/show their proof of vaccination status.

These soldiers from the Puckapunyal Army Base support GraniteHill with a range of clinical and general duties and will wear their uniform while there.

Cherree Hunter, Euroa Health chief executive officer, said this military presence was most welcome.

“All our wonderful staff at Euroa Health are at a point in which they actually need a break from the pressure of working additional hours and having to work short staffed due to staff needing to be furloughed because of COVID-19 and with the ADF’s assistance we can get the staff on days off without compromising care and help us to fill rosters every shift,” Mrs Hunter said.

“Sadly this was always going to be the case that staffing was going to be tight over the past months and our team have done a great job working extra hours to fill gaps and I cannot thank them enough.”

New Nagambie fire station officially opens

By DIANE GRANT CFA officials from District 22 and CFA Victoria joined brigade members to celebrate the official opening of the brand-new Nagambie Fire Station alongside Euroa MP Steph Ryan and Northern Victorian MP Wendy Lovell last week.

Local brigade members were joined by CFA Vic Chief Officer Jason Heffernan who officially opened the new building alongside Nagambie CFA Captain Allen Treble.

They both shared the honour of releasing the fire hose draped across the front of the Nagambie fire vehicle for the occasion.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said that after multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was great to officially open the station.

“Nagambie brigade are experts in both urban and wildfire environments, and this new station now matches the professionalism of its

members,” he said.

“I would like to thank the brigade for their invaluable service to their local community and beyond.

The new $1.59 million building replaces the former station located on Vine Street, which was over 60 years old.

The new station features three motor-room bays, a large brigade meeting

room and separate turn-out rooms and change facilities for men and women.

Nagambie Captain Allen Treble said “the new facility will help the brigade better serve and protect the community.

“It’s exciting to have a new fit-for-purpose facility to help serve the rapidly expanding Nagambie community,” he said.

EUROA Butter Factory hosted a bull sale conducted by Rodwells Euroa, last week.

The “Te Mooi Speckle Park - Performance Sale” stock had been previously running on property as Joshma Park and inspections were held there.

Kerrie Tubb from Rodwells Euroa said it was a “hugely successful sale”.

“There was an also delicious refreshment provided

by Euroa Butter Factory with welcoming hospitality,” she said.

Offered for sale were 30 purebred, registered bulls, six purebred, registered mature females, all proven

ET donors, 19 purebred registered heifers, one flush of Wattle Grove Morningstar M29, semen from 13 proven sires and 20 F1 Commercial heifers.

Bulls sold around $10,840 and top price reached $36,000.

Cows sold around $16,500 and PTIC Heifers sold for $14,368.

Over 120 Buyers registered and bidding online came from Queensland, New South Wales, Southern Australia, and Victoria but many were affected by floods and couldn’t be onsite.

Attending and bidding in person about 100 at the venue came from all parts of rural Victoria and New South Wales.

Many G20 Nations already use Nuclear Energy which they claim is affordable, cleaner,

greener and a reliable.

Does Australia need to at least have a real open debate on nuclear as a potential low emissions energy source?

I’d be keen to have your perspective.

There is evidence that China is infiltrating the Australian Political scene.

What are Dr Haines’ thoughts about the growing footprint of China especially throughout the South Pacific Islands such as Vanuatu, PNG, Samoa and Fiji?

In her opinion does the LNP or ALP have the best policy regarding China’s ongoing influence and do Australian’s have a need to feel uneasy?

If the forthcoming federal election brings about a hung Parliament, would Dr Haines support an ALP alliance with the Greens?

Does Dr Haines believe our courts are in sync with Australian community expectations when handing down criminal sentences?

The ALP claims it will reduce emissions to

43 per cent by 2030.

Does Dr Haines believe this is a realistically achievable target and what is own assessment?

Also, will this come at a cost to Australian Households and if so, has she conducted her own calculations in this regard?

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL TAUNGURUNG Cultural Tour Guide program in Nagambie has been launched last week, and Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) team members are very happy about it.

“It all starts today,” they said on the council’s social media.

“With support from our partners, the Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions, Visit Victoria, Koorie Heritage Trust Inc and Intrepid Travel, we have kicked off the Taungurung Cultural Tour Guide program in Nagambie.

“Over the next few weeks, our new Cultural Tour Guides and Leaders will build their capacity and con-

fidence to lead visitors on Country and be supported in the telling of the past, present and future Taungurung story.

“This is an exciting first step towards shaping our own tourism experiences that celebrate the vitality of Taungurung Culture and Country.

“We hope you can meet our Cultural Tour Guides out on tour soon.”

Strathbogie Shire Council Acting Mayor Paul Murray said, “Strathbogie Shire Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council last year.”

New bus for Euroa Health GENEROSITY is one of Ian Dickson’s pillars in life as he is not a man that leaves things half done and since his very kind donation in February 2020 of a new bus to Euroa Health, he recently touched based to ensure that the bus was being kept out of the weather as he identified that Euroa Health did not have undercover parking for the vehicle and provided us with funding to extend undercover parking for Euroa Health vehicles.

Mr Dickson was pleased to donate the additional funds for the bus shelter extension as he sees the value in donations of items that can be put to good use and although Euroa Health was delayed finishing this project due to contactor shortages from COVID-19, the team member were pleased to be able to have Mr Dickson visit on site last week and review the works undertaken.

Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter told Mr Dickson that his donations of both the bus and bus shelter make a difference to residents and staff at Euroa Health to enable residents to leave the facility for lifestyle activities which keep them connected to the local community and enjoy the gorgeous area that we live in on bus trips around the district.

John Gribben’s wealth of knowledge makes talk interesting

By ELLEN DOYLE JOHN Gribben knows a great deal about the history of this district and gave a very interesting talk about The Mystery of Annie Byrnes, commemorated by a plaque at Moglonemby.

Mr Gribben and Max Burnside did research together into the disappearance of little Annie Byrnes in 1884 from her home in Moglonemby.

It is both strange and mysterious.

Strange because no trace of her has ever been found and mysterious because it’s possible she was kidnapped.

It is hoped that one day a full explanation for her disappearance will be known.

After Annie went missing in 1884 no trace of her was ever found.

For this reason, and knowing that there was only a shallow creek behind the family house, many in the family believe, to this day, that she was kidnapped.

The night of her disappearance it rained, the police, including a black tracker.

Locals spent an enormous amount of time searching the creeks and surrounds in the area, so

Without finding evidence of her body it is doubtful that anyone will ever know what happened to the little girl known as Annie Byrne.

Plans to continue geological field trips this year STRATHBOGIE Granite Project has been providing updates on this project for many years now, but this is our first news sheet since the onset of COVID-19.

The group is looking forward to continuing our geological field trips and community presentations this year.

The Strathbogie Granite Project is collaboration between researchers from Melbourne and Stellenbosch in South Africa.

The focus is the Strathbogie Ranges, the iconic granite hills and plateaux from Tallarook to Mount Samaria in central Victoria.

The project has been built around collaboration between Professor John Clemens at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, Professor Neil Phillips of the University of Melbourne, and their colleagues and postgraduates.

Regional communities have access to the research outcomes through community presentations, informal verbal reports, and geological input during field days and excursions.

The granite studies are published regularly in scientific journals and copies are available from the project leaders.

Two conferences have been held in Benalla to engage the scientific and regional communities in sharing ideas and

The Victoria Undercover Conference of 2003 included 46 papers on aspects of land and landforms especially in NE Victoria; these included airborne and satellite surveys, aquifers, salinity, vegetation, soil, and underlying geology.

The International Granite Symposium at Benalla was held in 2017 with lectures, field trips, an abstract volume and keynote speakers from Australia and overseas.

Community presentations have been given at Tallarook, Yea, Seymour, Avenel, Euroa, Creighton Creek, Gooram, Strathbogie, Benalla, Melbourne and Bendigo.

One benefit of the research has been a regional geology synthesis that provides a baseline for ground water, soil, vegetation, rock cover and agriculture studies.

Many of the immediate surface features that influence farming, and even whether the land is cleared at all, reflect subtle variations in the nature of the underlying granite rocks.

For example, cracks in the granite lead to either tors (boulders) or pavements (slabs), or both, depending on whether they are predominantly horizontal or vertical, and these cracks influence ground water flow.

Perched paddocks and elevated bogs are a feature of the Strathbogie plateau and have developed because of the horizontal nature of granitic sheets.

The Mount Bernard geological trek in November 2021 was a great success and run twice on consecutive weekends.

The group is planning a follow up in 2022.

The geology talk at Swanpool planned for late September will be rescheduled after the fire season.

Field work extending to much of the granite has only been possible because of the co-operation of land holders who have generously given access to their land.

Old bank given new life

By HEATHER BAMFORD IN 1981 the National Bank in Longwood finally closed its door and the building was relocated to the Euroa Historical Museum in Kirkland Avenue, Euroa.

Originally this bank was a part of the Colonial Bank which could have commenced business in Longwood in 1886.

The internals have been kept intact as they had been in Longwood to the point that the rear wall is of historical significance as all previous officers who worked in the bank have, over time, inscribed their signatures.

These signatures date back to E Stribling in 1886.

Currently volunteers at the museum have been working on some minor repairs to this building.

The rear corner has been jacked up, the rear door frame and door replaced (with materials from the same era) but no other structural changes have been needed.

The internals have been left untouched with some repainting to be carried out externally.

Internally, memorabilia from Longwood have been added including the ‘transfer’ windows which were removed from St Andrew’s Anglican Church and replaced with leadlight windows (same images).

World Day of Prayer held at Nagambie

RELOCATION: The National Bank from Longwood was moved to its new site at the Euroa Museum in 1981.

The Euroa Historical and Genealogical Society has so much to offer.

Historical items are extensive and have been carefully catalogued and, in most cases, installed in settings in which they would have originally been found.

The main building includes nine rooms depicting the many areas of a normal home.

In the yards the large sheds house a huge range of farm machinery, tools and equipment from days gone by.

THE World Day of Prayer has been celebrated across the world for over 100 years.

This year the women of England, Wales and Northern Ireland World Day of Prayer committee, made up of women from member churches in these countries compiled the international service for Friday, March 4, for the worldwide celebration of the international “World Day of Prayer” (WDP) observance alongside 250 churches just within Victoria alone.

The theme for 2022 was “I know the plans I have for you”.

In Nagambie the service was held at the Mary MacKillop hall next to St Malachy’s Catholic Church and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.

St Malachy’s folk hosted the annual World Day of Prayer service and the children from St Joseph’s (pictured) took part in the annual observance.

The St Joseph’s children sang and mimed the children’s hymn: God Loves Me. Readers from the various churches in Nagambie took part in the service, and Bible readings, hymns and prayers for these specific countries were included.

Prayers for the war in the Ukraine were observed as well.

Reverend Richard Pennington from St John’s Anglican Church in Nagambie was the guest speaker.

The offering that was taken up on the day will be used by the ladies of the Bible Society to support the women of those countries in need.

At the end of the service the Uniting Church was commissioned to conduct the 2023 service.

The service will be written by the women of Taiwan on the theme “I have heard about your faith”.

The annual service was followed by a BYO lunch and fellowship time in the hall.

ECAG visits Butter Factory gardens

INSPIRATION: Euroa Community Action Group members visited the Euroa Butter Factory gardens to get inspiration in order to create the best community garden on Brock Street.

THE Euroa Community Action Group held the monthly meeting for February at the Butter Factory thanks to a kind offer from owners Jill and Bernard Hayes.

All attendees enjoyed a walk around the fantastic gardens full of vegetables and other interesting plants.

Mrs Hayes was on hand to answer any questions that our members had.

Members all went away with lots of inspiration for their own gardens.

The meeting spent a lot of time discussing the plans for the Community Garden in Brock Street focusing on stage one layout which will ensure wicking beds, shelter, irrigation, some seating areas and Nature

Play Zone are our first priorities.

The group is in the final stages of sign off with Strathbogie Shire around the use of the land.

Once this is completed we can move forward with our plans with the support of the community.

The executive team are working hard on getting some quotes on aspects of the plans.

One of Euroa regular community members Irais Trejo has agreed to lead the nature play area and has some great ideas which she is working on.

The Community Action Group has also auspiced the Euroa Toy Library and is assisting them with their plans.

The ECAG is going to coordinate a meet the candidates forum in April for the upcoming Federal election.

It will be an opportunity for all candidates to be on a panel and share what they are going to do for Euroa and region.

Red Cross Calling in March 2022

By HEATHER BAMFORD THE annual Red Cross Calling in March will follow the same routine as for the previous years in Euroa.

Rather than knocking on doors asking for donations, which did happen in the past, Red Cross members and other volunteers will be outside Burton’s IGA store in Binney Street.

You will find them there from March 15-19 and also from March 21-26.

In other years, the local Red Cross unit has found that the Euroa people have donated very generously.

This money will go to support local, country-wide and international projects that Red Cross is associated with.

The roster for those assisting with the Red Cross calling will be in Burton’s window, so look out for that if you have offered to help.

The COVID pandemic has made it difficult for the local Red Cross unit to meet but it is hoped that now that the situation has eased that the group will be able to meet monthly.

The local unit meets on the first Thursday of the month and the next meeting will be on April 7 from 10am (for a cuppa) and the meeting will be held at 10.30am in the RSL meeting room in Kirkland Avenue.

Euroa cinema revamp benefits more facilities

OLD second-hand seating to be replaced in Euroa Community Cinema’s $130,000 makeover are revamping smaller community theatres instead of going to landfill.

Violet Town St Dunstan’s Hall Film Society and AlburyWodonga Theatre Company are repurposing Euroa cinema’s middle to back rows of cloth seating, which were installed second-hand in 2004.

While the cinema’s historic seating (original balcony chairs) will stay in the front rows, the subsequent rows of cloth chairs will be upgraded to modern theatre seating within an accessible, and inclusive new floorplan for 260 movie-goers.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said 145 cloth chairs with external cup holders would soon be replaced by 158 wider chairs with built-in cup holders, and five dedicated wheelchair spaces within some rows of seating.

Cr Binks said council was rapt the renovation would have flow-on benefits for smaller film and theatre spaces, and the environment.

“We advertised for expressions of interest from community groups in December [2021] and are delighted the Violet Town and AlburyWodonga film and theatre groups wanted to repurpose the old chairs in their arts spaces,” she said.

“While enhancing the cinema experience in Euroa, rehousing the old chairs is a great outcome for cultural assets in three communities – and saved unnecessary waste to landfill.”

New comfort in accessible floorplan the Euroa Community Cinema renovation is funded by a $130,000 cultural and infrastructure grant from the

Victorian Government.

The makeover began in January with re-sanding and polishing floorboards, and will include repainted walls, steam-cleaned drapes, in addition to spacious new seating and improved accessibility.

“Council and cinema volunteers are excited about providing a more comfortable, accessible, and inclusive movie experience for families and individuals of all ages and abilities when the cinema reopens,” Cr Binks said.

“Previously wheelchairs could only be parked beside a row of seating, but the new floorplan has dedicated wheelchair spaces within some rows. There will also be two rows of chairs with lift-up arm rests for people who would like more room.”

With the arrival of Euroa cinema’s new seating delayed

by COVID, a re-opening date has not yet been confirmed.

“Our ‘gold-class’ chairs are six house recliners and a couple of couches, and the Euroa cinema seats will complement them well − becoming our ‘silver-class’ seating!”

Ms Cole said.

“The preloved seating from Euroa will make St Dunstan’s Hall feel more like a professional cinema when we show films, and are more comfortable, sturdy and safer than our plastic chairs – especially for older community members.”

Strathbogie Shire Council delivered two 11-chair rows

removed from the Euroa cinema to the Violet Town Men’s Shed in late January for remodelling.

“Our seating can’t be left in situ for other community events in the hall; so they are being cut down at Violet Town Men’s Shed in to banks of four chairs to make them lighter to move to the side of the hall,” Ms Cole said.

“We are grateful to Strathbogie Shire Council for the donation and delivery, and we’re hoping to have them ready for our next film night on March 18.

“We are always looking for new members, so our new chairs may also attract more people to come along.”

The amateur theatre group moved into the former bocce and function venue in 2014 but refitting with dedicated theatre seating was not a viable option.

“We are absolutely grateful to have received these chairs from the Euroa cinema in mid-January,” Mr Thomsen said.

“Previously we had a tiered metal structure with free-standing chairs; a team of dedicated volunteers have anchored the new chairs to our tiered platform.”

DREAM team composed of electrician Scott Haymes, sales representative Rachel Walsh and apprentice Marcus Blundell have been knocking on doors of every business and local’s house in order to change their light bulbs for free as part of their duty at Glower.

Glower is an accredited provider under the Victorian Energy Upgrades Scheme, a sustainable initiative delivered by the Victorian Government, registered to offer residential and commercial lighting upgrades, completely free.

“We have been in Euroa for almost a month and it’s by far our favorite town we’ve worked in for the past 12 months,” Ms Walsh said.

“We love being on the road and getting to meet communities such as the one we’ve met in Euroa, we have made a lot of friends in town, it’s been really good, Euroa is awesome.

“It’s also important for us to help locals save energy, and to help older residents in need of light changing who can’t go up a ladder anymore.

“For us, it’s about making a difference for the environment and for community members, really.”

More than 224,000 tonnes of carbon were saved by switching to led lights and opting for energy efficient products.

Large energy retailers such as AGL and Origin are required to reduce their carbon footprint by acquiring Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs) to meet the annual target set under Victorian legislation.

Accredited Persons (AP’s) such as Glower, create these VEECS by replacing inefficient lighting to energy-efficient LED in residential and non-residential premises and sell directly to the energy retailers for surrender.

G-MW customers urged to plan ahead for autumn GOULBURN-Murray Water (G-MW) is encouraging customers to plan ahead for their autumn irrigation needs.

The demand for irrigation water use during autumn is expected to be extremely high if conditions remain dry, combined with relatively full storages.

G-MW delivery services general manager Warren Blyth said it was important for customers to be ready for any changes to the system as high demand on water may cause congestion on some channels.

“The more notice provided for irrigation orders, the greater the chance customers have to secure the requested delivery time and flow rate,” he said.

“Orders can be placed up to a

maximum of 10 days in advance.

“If you are on the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system for ordering water, your orders need to be confirmed and authorised by planners at G-MW.” As a requirement of the G-MW Customer Charter, orders should be placed by using the G-MW ordering system WaterLINE. “This will ensure that water is debited against the correct allocation account while allowing us to communicate with you, and keep an eye on the water demands in certain channels, areas and regions,” Mr Blyth said.

“If demand for water does not exceed our channel delivery capacity, there will be no change to order scheduling.

“However, if the demand excessively exceeds the channel capacity, there may be a need to share the available capacity.”

Mr Blyth said G-MW was also working with customers to maintain the channel network to a high standard to prepare for any increase in water delivery in the pre-autumn period.

“Sometimes we have to undertake maintenance works on the channel systems that supply our irrigation districts,” he said.

“This includes the treatment of submerged aquatic weeds along various channels across irrigation districts to ensure a more consistent water supply to customers.

“We’ll advise you when we’re doing these works and we’ll

keep interruptions to a minimum.

“To ensure we’re working as closely as possible with our customers to manage their water needs, we encourage them to contact their planner to discuss their autumn irrigation needs.”

Country practice takes on two new doctors

By DIANE GRANT IN July 2015, Dr Abdul Atif took over as principal medical provider of the Nagambie Medical Centre (NMC) Church Street Country Practice.

Dr Atif has been in the Nagambie Medical practice for over seven years and has been a strong member of the medical profession in the community and Nagambie Healthcare facilities next door.

He was joined by Dr Nahida Khan in 2016 and they and the centre’s staff have been providing continuity to their clients and service providers that is required in a small country practice.

Over the past two years the COVID-19 virus pandemic has affected this small country medical practice and the shortage of doctors in rural areas has also impacted on the practice.

It has created extra work for the medicos and staff and now two new doctors are replacing ones who have left.

Dr Abdul Atif and Dr Nahida Khan and the NMC team recently welcomed two new doctors to help lift and share the load since the departure of Dr Sabah Nazir in December 2021.

Recently, the Nagambie Medical practice welcomed two new doctors to the community orientated practice.

Doctor Perera completed her internship and graduated in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia about six years ago with the family.

She started working in hospitals after completing all AMC exams.

She previously worked at Mercy Health and Barwon Health

and started working as a general practitioner last year in Wangaratta.

Her qualifications include MBBS, DRANZCOG (diploma in women’s health), diploma in child health, final year of GP training towards the fellowship this year with RACGP Doctor Perera is currently living in Melbourne with children (five years and 18 months), her husband and her mother.

Her professional interests are women’s health/antenatal shared

care, child health and mental health and her personal ones are: travelling, cycling, crafts and spending time with her children.

The second doctor to begin his country practice work is Dr Muhammad Salman, but his preferred name is Salman.

In Australia, he has worked at Goulburn Valley Health, Shepparton and different hospitals under Western Health, including Sunshine, Footscray and Williamstown hospitals from 2018 until 2022.

Tania Maxwell welcomes roads funding for shire

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL MP TANIA Maxwell has welcomed a $9.7 million state government investment to make Northern Victoria’s roads safer for drivers and local communities, including in the Strathbogie Shire.

Details of projects funded in round 3 in Avenel will enable safety improvements including improved signage and line marking.

The cost will be $720,000, with $144,000 from the state and $576,000 from a federal level.

Signage and line marking provides a greater opportunity for drivers and riders to correct their actions before an accident occurs.

It is expected that improving signage and line markings will result

in a reduction in serious injuries and fatalities.

Strathbogie Shire Council Acting Mayor Paul Murray is thrilled about this news.

“We welcome all funding to make roads in Strathbogie Shire safer and to help with our significant maintenance and improvement efforts,” Cr Murray said.

“Strathbogie Shire Council manages 2207km of roads, that’s 1470km of unsealed and 737km of sealed. On top of this we look after 521 bridges and culverts.

“This joint funded State and Federal Government project at Avenel is on VicRoads’ managed road and we are pleased the investment has been made to improve safety for our community

members and visitors alike.

“We know improving the safety at this intersection is something Avenel residents have been pushing for for many years, so I congratulate the local community for their persistence and advocacy success.”

The Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party MP said Victoria will fund 20 per cent and the Federal Government 80 per cent for safety works at Avenel, Bendigo, Cosgrove South, Shepparton, Kilmore, Warracknabeal to Birchip, and Robinvale to Sealake, costing almost $49m in the third round of the national Road Safety Program announced last week.

“I’m really pleased to see money for improvements to the complicated and dangerous intersection

where Jones and Tarcombe roads join the Hume Freeway at Avenel, which the community and I have been chasing for almost three years,” Ms Maxwell said.

“The funded project, costing $720,000, will improve signage and line-marking and that’s a good step.

“The Victorian and federal governments say the changes will help drivers and riders correct their actions approaching the intersection, reducing the risk of serious injuries and fatalities.

“After numerous meetings, I last talked with advisers to Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll MP and Regional Roads Victoria six months ago to put the community’s solutions for a safer freeway intersection on the table.”

Ladies bowls tournament pulls crowd

By AUDREY MCINTOSH OVERCAST weather dawned on Wednesday, March 2 and had us all wondering what the day would bring, but the weatherman was kind to us and the 96 ladies from clubs from many areas arrived to have a day out bowling.

President of the Euroa Club Neville Harris said it was a pleasure to have everyone here and thanked the greenkeepers and all the volunteers who worked so well to have the greens ready after the overnight rain.

He thanked the sponsor, Euroa Pharmacy and wished all good bowling and introduced Libby Byrne the tournament organiser who then welcomed the teams from Shepparton Park, Avenel, Kyabram, Hill Top, Seymour, Rushworth, Nathalia, Nummurkah, Shepparton Golf Nagambie, Numurkah Golf, East Shepparton, Benalla, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Mooroopna Golf, Euroa and gave the bowlers the rules of play for the day.

Nagambie golf club RSL Charity Day returns to annual schedule THE RSL charity day and revival of the honour board event after a 34 year hiatus was a great success with 60 players tackling the course and over $1700 raised for the local RSL branch.

Local branch president Larry King thanked all those concerned for their marvellous efforts in preparing a very enjoyable barbeque lunch and hoped that the day would become an annual event on the Nagambie golf club calendar.

To the golf the ladies event was won by Tina Gribben with a stylish 34 points to win by three as well as putting her name on the new honour board.

Tina is a regular at the big events and always figures in

the results, runner up went to the determined and tenacious Irene Keogh carving out 31 points in the tough conditions.

Nearest the pins for the ladies went to Anne Burns firing one onto the 8th and pin seeker Moz Fowler who never goes home empty handed on the 13th.

The men’s event was dominated by Murchison East cohorts with Trevor Burt showing the field a clean pair of heels scoring 40 points to be four clear of his nearest rival, fellow Murchison East golfer Don Hughes on 36 points.

Rounding out the top three in the men’s competition was Avenel visitor the talented Jared Smith also on

36 points.

Nearest the pins for the men were Rhys ‘Lightning’ Shepherd on the 3rd, Michael Mensfeld leaning on one into the 8th, Ben Cassar smoking the 13th and Phillip Neville taking home a much appreciated bottle of wine for his troubles on the 16th.

Highline back bigger than ever RETURNING to the Victorian High Country this month, the Highline Mountain Bike Festival is set to thrill and entertain.

Highline has extended to a four-day event in 2022, running from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th March.

It is the first of its kind in Australia, and offers spectators and competitors alike a unique opportunity on home ground.

An event village with food and beverage vendors will be onsite, along with a bar and DJ during festivities on Saturday.

The flagship slopestyle competition will be held on Saturday afternoon, an invitational event featuring the best sixteen riders from across the country.

The popular whip off competition and gravity downhill race are also back on the calendar.

New events for 2022 and adding to the fun, are amateur slopestyle, dual slalom, speed ‘n style, and balance bike competitions.

Event Director, Shannon Rademaker said he has been blown away by the response so far.

Benalla Squash Club are happy to announce that they will be taking part in the come & try day hosted by the Tomorrow Today Foundation at the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre on Sunday March 20th.

Amongst all the other sports and clubs on display there will be a new and improved inflatable squash court for everyone to have a go.

Bound to be lots of fun.

Phil Armstrong 35r and Jeff Starkey 8 got the team off to a good start with an opening stance of 46. Phil Thompson 34r and Rick O’Bree 28r gave the side good momentum at drinks [20 overs] with 1/108.

Sadly this momentum could not be maintained and the Northern Country ran out winners by 58 runs.

The first year of the Euroa Cricket Club Over 60’s has come to an end.

The side was well lead by Phil Thompson, on field and Peter Morley and Rob Asquith off field.

The squad was severely tested at times with injuries, but despite that had only one forfeit.

On field success eluded the team but a lot was learnt, like the ability to bat the 40 overs.

The squad of 19 players are a lot fitter and mixed very well socially with lots of banter but never a cross word.

Euroa Bowls Club hosts district semi finals

By AUDREY MCINTOSH Euroa Bowls Club hosted two of the Goulburn Valley Saturday Pennant semi-finals last Saturday when in Division three Shepparton Park played Seymour and in Division Six South Alexandra played Eildon and Yea played Eildon in the other semi.

Division three was won by Seymour and in

Division six south the two Eildon teams were victorious.

Raffle winners were Brendan Seir from Yea, Jim Wheelhouse from Eildon and Wes Gibbs from Shepparton Park.

This week’s Nifty Fifty winners were Jan South and Max Griffiths.

Social bowls will start again this week on Wednesday at 1pm.

BOWLS EUROA DIVISION TWO BOWLS

Congratulations to division two who played Kyabram at Shepparton Park and won 87/46 and now will play in the grand final on March 15.

Division four played at East Shepparton against Seymour and lost 57/74 and division five also at East Shepparton against Violet Town and they too lost 31/52.

All sides were fortunate enough to play under cover after the heavy showers overnight and continuation of some drizzling in the morning.

SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE: It will take serious time to get the green back to its former glory.

Club disappointed by golf course damage IN an unfortunate series of events, the Euroa Golf Course has suffered damage at the hands of local young people.

Over the weekend, a group of young people hired out the club’s own golf carts, which requires the use of an adult licence and credit card.

The group then used these carts to move around the course, and they have clearly not behaved responsibly nor respectfully and as a result the fourth fairway has been significantly impacted, and will now take some time,

money and effort to repair to its former quality.

The club is not looking to name and shame the young people in question, and do know the identities of those involved, but would like to highlight to parents that it is important to be aware of what children and young people are doing and where they may be doing it, as in this unfortunate instance private property has been significantly damaged and the community will be affected.

First open day a success at Euroa Clay Target Club THE decision made by the Euroa Clay Target Club to stage an open day for the first time proved quite successful.

The club welcomed shooters to try their hand at clay target shooting without the pressure of competition on Sunday.

This also gave time for the club members to offer

their experience in helping those attending for the first time.

All who attended hit plenty of the targets and at least three have intended to join the Australian Clay Target Association which will entitle them to compete at any associated club in Australia.

With this support the

club will continue to stage these open and practice days on the first Sunday of the month as well as the usual practice on Wednesday afternoons.

Competition shooting is held every second Sunday of the month with the “Barry Pyke” Memorial Championship the leading event this Sunday.

Under 14s play a nail biting grand final

By MONIQUE ANTONIS ON a cool but sunny Sunday morning at 10am, Euroa hosted Nagambie at the Friendlies for what would turn into quite a nail-biting grand final for the B grade under 14’s.

The nerves were tingling all round and the wind was enough to blow the bales off the stumps.

Nagambie won the toss and went into bat, facing bowlers Ollie Swain and Archie Wilson right off. Ollie Wilson was up next and scored the first wicket with a catch by Ben Creevey.

Next came bowlers Haimi Wolfenden, Ben Creevey, Jack Walters, Ethan Saxon, Leo Murphy and Leila Creevey giving away very little to Nagambie who fought hard to gain their every run.

Cale Robertson found the second wicket with a catch by Jack Walters.

The score now 2/74 after 19 overs.

Lachlan Dowell lined it up and bowled the third wicket and was also bowling his second over when Ollie Wilson ran out the fourth.

Ollie Wilson caught and bowled the fifth out, with Nagambie now on 5/82.

They then stepped it up as the wind died down for their last couple of overs, finishing on 5/106 by 11:20am.

Euroa now had a solid target to aim for and were feeling cautiously optimistic, until opening batsman Archie Wilson was bowled after just three runs.

THE Euroa junior CFA runners have been extremely busy for the last two weekends, on Sunday, February 27 competing at the CFA running track in Kyneton, which proved to be a superb day on the track for them.

Grand final glory

By MARK BORTHWICK JUST when you thought it could not get any more difficult this season, along comes 30mm the morning of the grand finals in Euroa.

After a quick check of the grounds, it was decided to play on the six synthetic courts as damage to the grass courts a week away from the Labour Day tournament would have had our greenkeepers hair out.

In A division Strathbogie played Terip Terip, in the A consolation Longwood Played Benalla Lawn and in B Division Benalla Royal played Swanpool.

Longwood managed to get over Benalla which was a great effort and for the fourth year running Benalla Gardens Royal won B division.

Unfortunately details of the consolation and B division were not available at time of writing this article.

However, the A division game was a close contest with Strathbogie taking an early lead with Jason Everleigh and Mark Borthwick winning 8-2 over Robert and Matthew Lawrence.

The ladies had a tight battle with Terip’s Cindy Hayes and Frances Lawrence winning in a tie breaker over Mayra Walsh and Genevieve Johnson.

The Strathbogie men including Craig Mercuri won all three sets being 14 games up but as expected the Terip women including Sally Kubeil equally won all three sets but along with Strathbogie’s third woman Meg Ford they were only eight games up.

Craig Mercuri ‘Chef ’ and Meg Ford had not won a set together and Don Martin and Sally Kubeil for Terip got away to a good start.

Chef managed to do a calf in the final set but battled on and when Meg Ford won her serve, Strathbogie held on to win 8-5 in a thriller to win by four games.

A great day was had by all and special thanks to the BDTA committee (particularly Stephen Garner) and Euroa Lawn Tennis Club for hosting the day.

The Strathbogie crew were spotted staggering out of the Sevens later that night with the cup still being displayed proudly by the captain, Chef.

ON Saturday, March 5 the Courtney Horwood Memorial trophy was awarded for the fourth consecutive year since her passing in 2018.

The award is for the best performed combination of both North Eastern Riding Club (NERC) show (held on Feb 5th) and Ruffy Adult Riding Club show held yesterday at Euroa agricultural show.

Pennie Claney was the winner of the highpoint at the NERC show and her combined points from another good day yesterday saw her deservedly take it out.

Pennie rode her thoroughbred mare “Miss Valentina”,

is a NERC member and resides in Strathbogie. She is also good friends with Ian and Kerri Horwood, parents of Courtney Horwood so was very honoured to win such a special award.

The perpetual shield is sponsored by the Horwood family; the woollen trophy rug is made by Piaffe Equestrian and Embroidery and sponsored by friend of a Courtney in Chelsea Douglas.

The beautiful velvet garland is made by Shopony sashes in Seymour and sponsored by NERC. Despite the looming rain it mostly held off for the running of the show.

Dot rules at Kinross Farms Summer Twilight Shoot Out SUPERSTAR Dot Rule held her nerve to see off all challengers to win the Kinross Farms Summer Twilight Shoot Out on the 18th hole from Gary Ritchie.

11 players teed off on the 10th with one eliminated on each hole.

A big gallery had gathered to follow and the bets were held.

Highly fancied players in the betting fell early with Glen McMartin, the favourite, unlucky to be eliminated on 12 when his tee shot caught the challenging tree that protects the green left and rebounded dead.

Dale McIntosh fell at the 15th with Michelle Thompson going at 16.

Richard Eddy who had played the best golf of the field dragged his tee shot left on 17 and found an almost unplayable line behind the trees, Gary Ritchie who had

been in the woods all night absolutely smashed his driver down 17 to make the last hole shoot out against Dot Rule who had flown under everyone’s radar.

Both players felt the pressure on the Tee of 18, hitting poor shots, but Dot scrambled the better to collect the big winner prize.

Wednesday was ladies opening day and a big field of 36 ladies played three person teams.

The winners were Annette Smith, Ros Doxey and Susan Harding with 50 points from Erica Mercer, Anne Hill and Maudie Ingram on 49.

Nearest the Pins were Erica Mercer and Gail Allen, while Maudie Ingram picked up Drive and Pitch on the 5th.

Erica also took home the longest drive in division one and Marion McMartin collected division two.

Paul Robertson, Pete Bath and Lucas Paul on 60.7.

On Sunday the much waited for final of the Murphy Motors four ball saw Cam Roper and Glen McMartin bring their best game along to give Richard Johnson and Neal Healey a golfing lesson taking the match on the 13th.

Both McMartin and Roper were on song.

Roper alone was five under par by the 13th with McMartin in two under and

would have had more birdies had Roper not stolen his thunder.

Healey and Johnson played well but were outclassed by the formidable pairing of Roper and McMartin.

In the last remaining competition to be completed for the season Charlie Walker has to take on Roper in the Lewis Family Knockout and will have his work in front of him.

The winner plays Bill Wright in the Final.

In other golfing news Matty Mills aced the island the hole at Hidden Valley and eagerly awaits the $500 prize.

Next weekend is the Autumn Tournament, Stroke, Scratch and Handicap Saturday.

Four Ball Stableford Sunday and mixed Pineshurst Monday.

Euroa wins under 16 premiership shield

By TOMAS FOGARTY Results: Euroa 4/59 (M Walters 19* retired, C Paul 10, W Smyth 6* retired) defeated Notre Dame/St Brendan’s 58 all out (M Walters 2/5, K Wolfenden 2/13).

EUROA travelled to Mooroopna on Friday evening to contest the grand final with Notre Dame/St Brendan’s.

This was the team that defeated Euroa in a tight tussle earlier in the year, breaking their unbeaten run and, in doing so, heading into the grand final as the favourites.

As the crowd filtered into the ground, Euroa lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, an unenviable position in the shortened 20 over format.

Any lingering concerns were soon put to rest early in the innings, as Euroa continued their impressive fielding form from last week’s semifinal.

With plenty of talk in the field and a brilliant display of line and length bowling from Darby Wilson, Mitch Walters and Ryan Hill, Euroa dominated from the first ball and didn’t let up.

With steely determination

and unrelenting pressure, the boys put on a bowling clinic.

The innings was peppered with sharp catches, diving saves and an inspirational direct hit run out that had Notre Dame/St Brendan’s on the back foot for their entire innings.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, Euroa had them reeling at 7/36, keeping the pressure on to bowl Notre Dame/St Brendan’s out for 58.

It was a true exhibition of teamwork from a tight and cohesive unit, with almost every bowler called upon taking a wicket and all making an important contribution.

Mitch Walters (2/5) and Kusuma Wolfenden (2/13) finished with the best figures as the team walked off the ground brimming with confidence, but the job was only half done.

The dark clouds ominously creeping toward the ground from behind the grandstand threatened to rain on the boys’ parade as the openers walked to the middle, but nothing was going to stop the Euroa jugger-

nauts on this occasion.

Week in and week out, the openers have positioned the team in a strongly with a solid start, and there is no more important time for this to occur than chasing down a relatively low but dangerous total in a grand final.

Mitch Walters (19* retired) and Walter Jackson (4* retired) did just that, and after a late flurry from Mitch, the boys had 36 on the board before the loss of the first wicket.

Euroa was cruising to a memorable victory with plenty of wickets in hand and overs to spare but, as is usually the way in the last match of the season, there was a slight twist in the tale.

Coen Paul (10) tried his best to finish the match early but his eagerness had him caught on the boundary.

This triggered the loss of four wickets for 15 runs and had the spectators on the edge of their seat and a few nervous batsmen pacing the sideline waiting to bat.

To their credit, the boys didn’t panic and consolidated the innings, with Wil

Smyth (6* retired) keeping the good balls out, absorbing the pressure and steadying the innings, while he and his teammates kept the scoreboard ticking over at a crucial time.

A boundary with four overs to spare and only four wickets down was enough for Euroa to pass Notre Dame/St Brendans total and be crowned the 2021/22 U16 A grade premiers.

The grand final was a fitting end to an amazingly consistent and high quality season by Euroa, lifting to an elite level in the finals series and culminating in the ultimate glory.

The boys played with a maturity beyond their years, played the match in the right spirit and should be very proud of their achievement this season.

THE picturesque Strathbogie Golf Club will host a three-day Victorian Veterans Country golf Championships from May 1 to 3.

The club board was successful in obtaining the right to host this exciting event where players from across the state will come together to compete and engage in social activities.

Members believe that it will put Strathbogie on the map by enhancing the club’s reputation as an excellent golfing venue, but further bring visitors to the shire with the associated economic benefits.

“We believe that this event will not only showcase the exceptional features of the Strathbogie Golf Club but also shine a light on the Town of Strathbogie while attracting visitors who will support accommodation and other hospitality venues across the shire,” Club member Greg Roberts said.

“The event hopes to attract both country golfers and metropolitan players to this annual championship.”

It is also hoped that through the success of this event it will become an annual feature on the Strathbogie Shire calendar.

The club was founded in 1924 and being a not for profit fully funded and maintained by volunteers organisation, has for almost 100 years provided the local district and broader community the opportunity to participate in the game of golf.

The recreational, social and health benefits are well recognised.

The club caters for members and players of all ages

from juniors to players almost as old as the club itself.

Veteran Golf Associations have been well accepted by the golfing fraternity as viable and well organised units providing the opportunity for senior golfers to enjoy competitive golf and enhance fellowship.

Both federal and state governments have endorsed Veteran Associations for providing this facility for senior citizens and consider it a boost to their health and life style.

The Victorian Veteran Golfers Association (VVGA) was formed in 1983 to provide a central organisation for veterans’ golf in this state.

There are now nearly 4000 affiliated members playing in 21 district associations throughout the state of Victoria.

Since the inception of the VVGA in 1982, veteran golfers have made a significant financial and cultural contribution to golf in Australia as Victorian veteran tournaments provide a financial boost to golf clubs and to the local economy when 200 people descend on the venue for at least three days accommodation golf and touring.
