The Greening Euroa Project is an innovative community driven project that will use recycled water to irrigate public green spaces during the summer months.

The proposal is the first of its kind in Victoria.

Mayor Laura Binks said the project needs a $3.8 million funding commitment to make it a reality.

“We’re advocating to State and Federal governments for the funding, but we’re also asking the community to join our campaign and help spread the message,” Cr Binks said.

The Greening Euroa Committee is made up of committed stakeholders across Euroa including Strathbogie Shire Council, Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Euroa Secondary College, Euroa Primary School, St. Johns Primary

School, Euroa Arboretum, Memorial Oval Committee of Management, Friendlies Oval Committee of Management, Euroa Croquet Club, Euroa Lawn Tennis Club and Euroa Agricultural Society.

The committee is seeking $3.8 million for implementation and construction.

The funds will allow wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water’s treatment plant to be upgraded from Class C to Class B and piped

underground to storage tanks throughout town.

From here it will be available for pumping onto the many public ovals and sports grounds in the community.

“The Greening Euroa Project is being driven by a committee of passionate locals who came together to find a way to lessen the impacts of chronic water shortages in a rapidly warming climate,” Cr Binks said.

VLocity off line due to wheel issue Coaches,, V/Line / classic fleet in use while authorities investigate g cause of wheel damage g

By STEVE KELLY VLOCITY trains have been out of action on the North East line, replaced by coach services and then V/Line’s classic fleet, while investigations continued into what caused the damage to wheels of the VLocity train.

The newer VLocity trains were eventually reinstated on Monday after the investigation was completed.

Investigations confirmed it is safe for VLocity trains to return with ongoing additional monitoring, and that there were no significant issues and only minor damage identified.

The damage to the Albury line VLocity trains is currently limited to minor indentations - 1-2mm deep and 1-2cm long - on the outer edges of the wheels on the right side of the train.

V/Line advises that while these trains are still safe to operate with these indentations repeated contact to this part of the wheel could lead to further damage.

To take a cautious approach V/Line stopped running passenger services with these trains while it works

WHEEL DAMAGE: The North East rail line’s only VLocity train has been out of action while operators determined what was causing indentations in the wheels. with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to identify what is causing the damage.

Last Wednesday, coaches replaced two Albury line services to allow a VLocity train to undertake a test run on the line using special monitoring equipment including filming the wheels with a camera to try and identify what is causing the minor indentations.

Investigations will con-

tinue once the data from this test run has been analysed.

Soon after, all six daily services recommenced running as trains, operated by V/Line’s classic fleet.

“We are continuing to work to rectify this issue with safety our number one priority,” a V/Line spokesperson said.

“Some trains experienced minor indentations on the outer edges of the wheels

and we are conducting track tests to diagnose the cause of the problem.

“We thank passengers for their patience while some services are replaced by coaches.”

Passengers are encouraged to stay up-to-date with any future service changes via the V/Line website, app, twitter feed or by speaking to station staff.

An ARTC spokesperson said they are aware of mi-

nor damage sustained to a V/Line train that has recently used their network but they can’t find anything that might have caused the damage.

“Following notification of this damage, ARTC inspected the track, including points, crossovers, level crossings as well as the dual gauge portions of the network in the Melbourne metropolitan area,” he said.

“ARTC also conducted further targeted inspections together with V/Line track engineering personnel on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28.

“Following these inspections, no issues or causes have been identified with the ARTC network that could have caused this damage at this point in time.”

The first VLocity passenger train made its maiden trip in late December and a Department of Transport spokesperson said the other two sets of six trains will be operational by mid-2022.

However, Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy voiced his disappointment with the delays.

“The North East train saga continues with yet another delay in the VLocity train sets,” he said.

“The government for Melbourne continues to treat regional people as second class citizens.

“If we were on the more fancied Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong lines we would be already comfortable in the new train sets, it looks like another long cold winter for North East train travellers.”

Website set up to report Vic’s worst roads

By GUS RIDDER MEMBER for Euroa and shadow minister for roads Steph Ryan has urged road users to contribute to the Liberals and Nationals’ road safety campaign website vicsworstroad.vote.

The website aims to create a list of the state’s most dangerous roads to present to the Victorian roads minister.

Ms Ryan said the campaign to name Victoria’s worst roads is also revealing the real-life consequences of worsening conditions on regional roads.

“Every death on our roads is a tragedy and is preventable,” she said.

“Our road safety campaign is

exposing the serious neglect of our roads by Labor governments that have been in power for 19 of the past 23 years.

“Labor’s cuts to road safety and maintenance come as the road toll has reached 101 deaths since January - a 16.1 per cent increase on the same time last year.

“We’ve heard from countless Victorians who fear the lifethreatening consequences of poor roads that are littered with potholes or dangerously narrow after years of neglect.

“I urge all drivers to vote for the worst roads in the state so I can take this list to the roads minister in coming months.”

Ms Ryan has also refuted State Government claims that it has

gone ‘over and above its original target’ for road maintenance in regional Victoria.

“Safer roads save lives which is why we should be investing more - not less - in maintaining the network and on initiatives that support the safety of all road users,” she said.

“Labor’s cuts to road safety and maintenance come as the road toll has reached 101 deaths since January - a 16.1 per cent increase on the same time last year.

“The road toll is rising, but the Andrews Government will cut $50 million from road safety this year alone, with more cuts on the way.”

Tree falls again in Ruffy

By GUS RIDDER ANOTHER tree has fallen down across the LongwoodRuffy Road, bringing the total to at least four in the past three months.

All of these fallen trees have been located within a 100m stretch of newly laid road.

The most recent tree fell at about 4.20pm last Tuesday afternoon, a busy time for commuters on the road.

The fall was captured on the dashcam of the Ruffy Fire Brigade’s captain George Noye, who happened to be on the road at the time of the incident.

He was luckily able to stop his car prior to the tree falling.

Mr Noye spoke about the recent incidents along the road.

“There have probably been four of five within that vicinity of 100m that have fallen down in the last three months,” he said.

“Generally we see the trees there start to fall when winter hits but they’ve been coming down all year.

“We had a near miss the other day about 20m from the most recent tree, when my wife

was driving home and I was in a car behind.

“The history on this 1km bit of road, it’s amazing how many trees fall down.”

According to Mr Noye, the trees are creating a dangerous environment for people driving on the roads and those who have to clear the roads.

“My crews and the brigades are going out on stormy nights so people can get home or off the hill, risking their lives,” he said.

“Council workers have to risk themselves too.

“They could come down at any moment.

“We’ve got a problem and need to find a solution.”

Traffic along the road was backed up before CFA volunteers quickly worked to remove the tree from the middle of the road.

A LARGE crowd of locals braved wet, freezing conditions to participate in the DESIGNEuroa ‘Feet on the Street’ event on Saturday morning.

Artists, traders, community members and kids joined together on a ‘walkshop’ through Binney Street that captured ideas for the improvement or ‘activation’ of local spaces around Euroa.

This was facilitated by Gilbert Rochecouste and his company Village Well - renowned for their successful activation of many spaces, including Melbourne’s laneways.

A pedestrian convoy walked up and down Binney Street, with music from speakers turning the event into a ‘danceshop’ temporarily.

Cafe Django also performed live music outside of the OneWorld shop, creating a fun, relaxed atmosphere for everyone participating in the day.

The footpaths of Binney Street were covered in multicoloured chalk writing and drawings, as attendees wrote down some of the things they wanted to see in the spaces of Euroa.

Some notable examples included more trees, less cars, bike lanes, window art and open cafes.

Mr Rochecouste said that Euroa had significant potential to improve its retail areas.

“It is a fantastic town with some lovely spaces,” he said.

“We want to gather together and think of ways that we can activate them and make the most out of the spaces you have already.”

DESIGNEuroa are a small community group who are responsible for many of the popup installations in town, including the Pocket Park, the Town Beach and the Bush Garden.

To build on the overwhelming and positive feedback they’d had from those great spaces, the walkshops were planned as a way to give more people in the community the opportunity to contribute to future activation events and projects.

JAM PACKED: A convoy of artists, traders and community members walked up and down Euroa’s main street, listening to live music and discussing how to get the most out of the town’s spaces.

The group has been working hard to promote arts and culture in Euroa, by incorporating local themes and strong imagery into the public spaces.

Shirley Saywell from DESIGNEuroa said the group was thrilled with the events over the weekend.

“We were stoked with the turnout and the positive feedback,” she said.

“It was such a great crowd of community contributors from the two days.

“We have captured some easy and doable projects and we will work with interested parties on some of the other inspired ideas.”

Another event was held on Friday, June 3 for council, land owners, landlords and the Euroa Business community.

This event, also led by Village Well, provided an opportunity for businesses within the main street look at opportunities to grow the business and retail district of Euroa.

Film screening for NAIDOC Week THE Strathbogie Shire Council will be hosting a film screening for NAIDOC Week at the Euroa Community Cinema.

The cinema will screen Indigenous documentary ‘Ablaze (PG)’ by Tiriki Onus and Alec Morgan on Saturday, July 2 at 7.30pm and Sunday, July 3 at 4pm.

NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of Indigenous history, culture and achievements with events held around Australia during the week from July 2-10.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said council was proud to have strong links with First Nations people through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council.

“Last year we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a very special flag raising ceremony after we were gifted the Taungurung Sovereign Flag by the Taungurung People,” Cr Binks said.

“We are proud of our MOU which has been a valuable document to strengthen our relationship with the Taungurung people.”

Birrell settling into Nicholls seat HUGE

NEWLY elected Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, has provided an update on how life has been for him since the election and a busy campaign period.

The Nationals member discussed some of the excitement, challenges and goals he’s had since being elected at the end of May. “The election campaign itself was so intense that I took a bit of time off immediately while I wait for the seat to be officially declared,” he said.

“The seat will be declared this week and I’ll begin the process of employing staff, getting the office ready and doing the official work.

“I have been to Canberra for a party room meeting already where we elected office bearers, like the leader of the party and a leader for the Senate.

“It was a very professional and cordial process.

“I’ve always got along with David Littleproud and I’ll support him as he leads our party.

Mr Birrell, a Shepparton local, discussed how privileged he felt to be able to represent a region that means so much to him.

“I really love the place and people know that about me,” he said.

“I’ve been a bit Shepparton focused throughout the campaign

“We’ve made some commitments for things that we wanted to do and I’ll be imploring the relevant Labor ministers about the importance of those projects.

“In particular, these include

the Seymour Wellbeing Hub and the Goulburn Valley Health projects.

“I’m really concerned about Labor’s stated intentions in relation to water and clawing back irrigation water from the Murray-Darling basin.

“I think that’s a really bad step for our economy and we’ll be using everything we can, be it advocacy, exclamations and tactics to make sure they aren’t implemented as they’ll hurt our people.

“It’s a balance between holding the Government to account, making sure we look out for our people, being constructive with them when we can be and putting forward an alternative government.

The seat of Nicholls was a closely contested one, with Mr Birrell narrowly edging Independent candidate Rob Priestly.

The new member spoke about

the rising trend of Independent members and candidates having success across the north-east region, and the entire country.

“It was a trend we saw with seats going to Independents,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of analysis about it to see if people didn’t like the government and didn’t like the alternative government.

“So they wanted to vote for someone that wasn’t claiming they’d form a government but would instead do a deal with a party that would.”

Mr Nicholls voiced his preference for a party system instead.

“I don’t see Australia in that way, I think the system we have of parties coming together to form a disciplined majority government, and not have to rely on deals with the cross bench, is the better way for Australia to be governed,” he said.

“That’s just my view and why I decided to join a party and run.

“I think that in certain, rare circumstances Independent’s may have their place but I think for Australia’s governance our history shows that we’ve done well as a country by forming parties and coming together as a government.

“I’ve put myself forward to represent Nicholls in this way but it doesn’t mean I’m going to agree with everything the party says.

“I felt that the Nationals, as a team, can negotiate really good deals for regional Australia and that’s why I wanted to be a part of it.”

Total rainfall for the week ending at 10am on Monday, June 6 was 54.2mm.

This included 16mm on Tuesday, May 31, 2mm on Wednesday, June 1, 1.4mm on Thursday, June 2, 3.4mm on Saturday, June 4, 4.8mm on Sunday, June 5 and 26.6mm on Monday, June 6.

I AM a resident of Strathbogie Shire and have been for some 27 years.

Recently there have been roadworks done on the Euroa/Strathbogie Road, which is great and much appreciated.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in all the centre dividing lines being painted white.

This would not be a problem in well lit areas in Euroa, but on the mentioned road this is dangerous.

The previous lines were yellow and that was for a reason.

We are subjected to incredibly heavy fog and copious amount of wildlife.

So from about May through to October our drive to work and home down and up the hill becomes very perilous.

I have had some near misses and have no doubt so have others.

I did the drive home on Thursday, May 26 and I could only see one line in front of me and

no markers on the side of the road, due to the thick fog.

Yellow lines allowed better vision in these conditions.

I have no idea whom decided that the lines should be painted white, and I really don’t care.

They need to be returned to yellow, not only on Euroa/Strathbogie Road, but all surrounding roads to ensure the safety of residence and the increased number of visitors to our area.

Would hate to see a fatality on our roads.

Please repaint our lines yellow for better visibility and safety.

By GUS RIDDER CHILDREN at St John’s Primary School in Euroa have assisted in creating conservation boxes for the region’s wildlife.

With conservationist Ray Thomas leading the way and teachers providing some helpful supervision, students in years five and six spent Monday morning creating the boxes with drills and hammers.

The wooden boxes are designed to be safe from predators, keeping any animals that find them protected.

Mr Thomas says the boxes can provide a safe habitat for many creatures that live across the region, including the brush-tailed phascogale.

The phascogale is a tiny, tree-dwelling marsupial that is rare to find these days.

“I’ve unfortunately found some dead phascogales around Creighton’s Creek recently,” he said.

“The fact there are dead ones means that we have a population, so we want to ensure we look after them. “ A critical factor for their habitat is hollow trees, but many of these are gone

“They only live a couple of years, so if we can keep them safe then they can keep their population levels high.”

Another species that the boxes aims to help are the sugar-gliders and squirrelgliders.

“I’ve found some squirrel glider tails around the creek so that suggests we have a large owl population too,” Mr Thomas said.

Mr Thomas spoke of the importance of getting the kids involved in the conservation process.

“We have to do it,” he said.

“I could try and do it all myself but there’s a tremendous opportunity to get the younger generation aware and involved.”

Mr Thomas also spoke about the emergence of healthy silver banksia plants along the creek.

The remaining pockets had

been isolated and inbred, preventing healthy regrowth of the plants.

“I’ve managed to get seeds from all the pockets and plant them side by side in an orchard to make sure the genes are spread properly,” he said.

“There’s 200 plus of the plants now and there are plans to get more planted this year.

“Our creek will become one of the best seed sources for this plant in the future.

“It’s like Noah’s ark.”

The Ellen Frances pub staff have now had their coffee making training so now you can get dessert and coffee at the pub.

All VT folk over six months of age can now get free flu vaccines at GP clinics and pharmacies for the month of June.

The paths and landscaping, being completed by Kialla Lawn and Garden will certainly lift the profile and appeal of these corners, along with the addition of the Heritage water tank on the corner of Down

and Maxfield streets.

The Longwood Action Group held their Welcome to Winter Day at the Pub Paddock barbecue area last Sunday in very wet and wild conditions.

A free snag in bread and a plant, and warmth from a fire drum were on offer.

Wendy Holland from Community Vibe was in attendance to capture ideas and discuss the Masterplan development for Longwood.

Author talk postponed

EUROA HEALTH PROGRAM RETURNS: ‘Gilburn’, an activity group at Euroa Health has returned after being paused due to COVID. PHOTO: Matthias Zomer on Pexels

‘Gilburn’ re-commencing June 22 EUROA Health will be commencing one of their much loved community services program, ‘Gilburn’.

The planned activity group will be open from June 22, on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Amaroo building.

There will be raft of activities offered for social engagement and wellbeing for those living in the community.

Activities like bus trips, exercise, tours of gardens and other special interest locations, cooking, arts and craft will all be included.

A special group for Men will also run every second Tuesday of the month.

Program manager Fiona Chamberlain spoke about the excitement in bringing ‘Gilburn’ back.

“The program has been paused during COVID time and we are very excited to get this up and running and welcoming the community back,” she said.

“It is very important for us as a health service to offer services for those living in the community, not just in our hospital and aged care.”

Other services on offer to support those living independently include in-home services like domestic assistance (cleaning), and Allied Health services including occupational therapy,

physiotherapy and exercise physiology.

Eligibility criteria is anyone over 65 years of age, NDIS participants (no age restriction) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over 60 years of age.

An open session with free food and entertainment will be held on Monday, June 20 from 2pm-6pm.

It will be an opportunity for all to attend and find out more about what’s on offer.

Everyone is invited.

MURDER mystery author Ruth Morgan has postponed her book tour days before her arrival in the Goulburn Valley.

Ms Morgan was due to visit Euroa Library, Cobram Library, Shepparton Library and Yarrawonga Library but due to personal reasons must return home.

Goulburn Valley Libraries was disappointed that the events would be postponed but understood the situation.

“Goulburn Valley Libraries appreciates Ms Morgan’s willingness to make the trip back to the area and will announce her return dates as soon as plans have been confirmed,” they said.

“In the meantime, her novel The Whitworth mysteries can be requested at any of our libraries.”

Ms Morgan was expected to be speaking at the Euroa Library on Tuesday, June 7 but a new date will be confirmed in the future.

The Euroa Library will still be hosting the ‘Craft and Coffee’ event on Tuesday, June 14.

The free event will help attendees create fabric flower brooches, with all equipment provided.

“Spirit Matters” PENTECOST INBREAKING. Pentecost comes seven weeks after Easter, (UK’s Whit/White Sunday, based on the white garments of baptism) In the Christian calendar, it commemorates the descending Holy Spirit ‘fire’ upon 120 people, including eleven disciples of Christ, after Judas hung himself for betraying Jesus.

Jesus lived 40 days in resurrected life but before He ascended, gave believers instruction, not to leave Jerusalem (Matt 3:11-12) until they’d received the ‘Helper’. “Be filled with the Holy Spirit”. (Ephes 5:18) Ten days later, this occurred in a mighty way, as Joel 2:28-29 prophesied, when 120 fell under anointing Holy Spirit power, then uttering other tongues.

Emboldened, Peter spoke authoritatively to the crowd and 3000 gave their hearts to Christ and the Church was born. Acts 2: 4 “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them”.

During the worst of Covid, everyone suffered physical distancing from loved ones. On-line communication was some consolation but separation was still sorely felt. Once ‘released’, the common theme playing out across the globe, was families traveling across town, interstate and overseas for the ‘real thing’ of re-uniting with family ‘In person’, to hug, hold and kiss one another in loving reunion. Nothing compares.

Relationships mean everything to us because it was so ‘in the beginning’.

Our Creator, the Triune God discussed, “Come let US make them in OUR image, reflecting OUR nature….” (Gen.1 26-28)). Father, Son and Holy Spirit; Love, Lover and Loving.

When the greatest Treasure comes to any individual through believing and receiving Christs’ Grace and Mercy, lives are miraculously transformed.

Redeemed people, become who they were meant to be and grow more like Jesus. (Rom.12:1-2, Gal 2:10)) Born-again spiritually (John 3:3) we leave our hard-hearted ‘born-against’ attitudes behind. Jesus died for relationship not religion. Christians long to see Jesus someday, ‘in Personhood’ as promised.

(Acts 1:11, Rev 22;12) Until that time, Christians have the ‘mind of Christ’. (1 Cor 2:16)) and respect the body as His temple.. (1 Cor 6:19)) The person of the Holy Spirit abides within souls where He guides, leads, comforts and ‘never leaves nor forsakes us’.(Matt 28:20, ) Speaking in different languages still occurs when Christians are touched by Holy Spirit baptism.

Christs’ disciples were blessed to be with Jesus ‘in person’ for 3 ½ years but their hopes were dashed when Jesus was crucified.. Imagine their supreme joy on the third day when Jesus appeared alive and ‘in Person’ again! (Matt. 17:22-23) Christians greatly anticipate Christs’ physical return at the end of this age.

That time is drawing near. Prophesy has accurately described the current crazy world of today. (Matt.24: Jesus commands us to keep working for His Kingdom to come on Earth (Matt.6:10) bringing in the harvest of souls who hear and heed the Gospel message and “proclaiming Him until He comes”. (! Cor 11:26) Jesus is the rewarder of those, (Heb.11:6) who diligently seek Him. THE ever-active Euroa Historical Group continue to work on projects that promote and enhance the history of the local community.

Again, for the fifth year in a row, the museum has collated and published a new calendar for 2023.

Each year, to assist with the choice of photos, the group has worked on a theme with previous themes including business houses, churches, hotels and garages/ transport.

For 2023, schools have been selected from across the Shire of Strathbogie.

It was often disappointing that certain schools haven’t been featured but this has depended on those on file.

The museum group were delighted when a local bus company were able to provide an excellent photo of one of the earlier vehicles used on a school bus run.

This photo provided by Underwood family, is of ‘The Streak’, which was a 1949 OB Bedford with a Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (Comair) body.

Owner, Lin Underwood fitted a heavily modified GMC six-cylinder engine out of a racing car into the bus, hence the name, ‘The Streak’.

The driver in the photo is a brother-in-law of Lin, Eugene Gamble who worked for the company, driving the Longwood school bus in the early to mid1960s (Frank Carracher of Long-

School bus-runs were not without incident.

One morning Eugene had just left the depot heading to Longwood to pick up children when someone shot the back window out of the bus as he drove across the Castle Creek bridge.

Eugene lost control and ended up in the gutter.

The original owner of the company was Lin’s father, Gordon Underwood.

Gordon was involved with a variety of businesses in town including running a garage, buying and selling cars and motorcycles, running a firewood business and a taxi service.

Lin worked for his father and when Gordon passed away in

1956, Lin and his wife Dawn took over the operation of Underwood’s Passenger Service.

Lin, like his father before him, did all his own mechanical maintenance on his buses.

They operated the Strathbogie, Balmattum, Moglonemby and Longwood school runs and a smaller bus that collected children from areas around Longwood to connect with the larger Longwood bus.

They also operated a charter service and town run transporting senior citizens to and from Binney Street.

Historical registers passed on

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Historical and Genealogical Society has received a donation of old registers relating to the State Bank of Victoria (SBV) Euroa & Violet Town branches.

The registers, dating back to the early 1900s, were driven to Euroa by former employees of the State Bank and will be kept in the Farmers Arms museum on Kirkland Avenue.

They remain in excellent condition, with information from over

100 years of banking history covered across the collection of large, hardcovered books donated.

Members of the State Bank of Victoria Retired Officers Club joined locals Geoff Vincent and John Gilbert in an official handover of the items.

Both Mr Vincent and Mr Gilbert had been SBV employees in the past before the bank folded in 1990 and was purchased by the Commonwealth Bank.

Bardrick and member Terry Dynes all made the drive from Melbourne to Euroa for the handover.

The group joined together for coffee at the museum, reminiscing on the old bank jobs and taking note of the familiar names recorded in the registers.

Mr Gilbert acknowledged that many of the names written in 1908 are still prominent Euroa and surroundings families.

The Retired Officers Club were more than happy to provide the museum with the registers.

“We’ve got all these things that we’re trying to find good homes for,” secretary Ross Bardrick said.

“We’ve had items donated to museums, groups and libraries in the past.”

Mr Gilbert was equally as excited to be receiving the donated goods.

“I’m very happy with them,” he said.

The registers will be available for viewing shortly as part of the Historical Society’s artefacts on display at the museum.

A total of 356 not for profit organisations across every state and territory received grants from this program, with each group able to claim up to $1000 to be put towards projects chosen by the clubs.

Kate Peterson, a manager within the Australia Post network who is involved

with Euroa sports, spoke about the grant program and the nomination process.

“The grants come out yearly and we can nominate organisations that are doing great work in the community to receive up to $1000,” she said.

“I was involved with nominating the basketball team, and one of my colleagues nominated the football and netball team.

“Both these clubs were lucky to receive this same grant last year.”

The grants will be well-

received by the clubs who have already chosen what this funding will go towards.

“The football club will be using it to go towards umpire and coach training,” Ms Peterson said.

“Euroa basketball will be getting uniforms arranged for all our participants.

“Being in a small town, its nice seeing outside money be provided so we don’t have to go to the same businesses all the time to ask for sponsorship.

“We can take some pressure off them.”

CHANNEL Nine’s hit television show, Postcards, aired an episode featuring some of Euroa’s iconic establishments last week.

The television crew, led by former tennis star Todd Woodbridge, were in Euroa in early April.

While in town, they visited the Historical Society Museum, Mawson’s Bakery and the Euroa Arboretum.

All three venues looked fantastic on the tv screen, as interviews with John Gilbert of the museum, Gayle Mawson from the bakery and Cathy Olive from the

Mrs Mawson spoke about how proud they were to have their bakery and town showcased to a wider audience.

“It was an honour that they chose us to be a part of it,” she said.

“It’s great for the whole town of Euroa if they can bring people to town, lets get Euroa on the map.”

Mr Gilbert said that the museum and historical society had been getting a lot of attention recently from

film crews.

“We’ve had a few different crews rock up in the past few months,” he said.

“Any press is good press and for an organization that relies on volunteers, it’s great to get our name out there.”

Then we went to the Euroa Hotel for a delicious tea and met some Nagambie Historical Society folk there, and the Nagambie Tuckett family who were celebrating Ken Tuckett’s birthday there.

It was a nice way to spend a late autumn Sunday afternoon.

It was also great to see the great talents of contestants and coaches on the Grand Finale of the Voice show on television.

Then last weekend I watched the Platinum Part at the Palace celebrating our Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Go Nagambie hosts local businesses at brewery

By DIANE GRANT MORE than 120 people from Nagambie, Avenel and surrounding towns gathered together on the first day of winter for the Go Nagambie evening held at the Nagambie Brewery and Distillery.

President of Go Nagambie Lee Rowland welcomed everyone to the social evening and spoke on how Nagambie can become a premier regional centre for liveability, investment, visitation and a major event venue.

Entrepreneur Gerry Ryan spoke on the plans for expanding Mitchelton to improve its reputation as a fine wine and food venue.

There are plans to have a cocktail bar in the tower, a larger Café Provedore dining are, improvement of the underground cellar for tours, and the reopening of a bistro at the Brewery.

He spoke briefly on his lifestyle village, the factory at the industrial estate and new residential blocks to be developed soon.

“What all these projects needed is people,” he said.

“There is not enough staff here and it is holding Nagambie back.

“People with much needed skills who are willing to work in a rural area are needed which would benefit the towns, the businesses, education of our young ones, tourism and the overall region.”

Mr Ryan wants the government to encourage people and visitors to the region and for businesses to open up and open up beds.

He wants Go Nagambie to be supported to put the town on the map and bring visitors to Nagambie.

Next speakers were Go Nagambie’s John Beresford who gave a brief summary of what is happening around the district.

Growth of the area, involving trades and construction, the retirement village, the booming hospitality sector and the thoroughbred and equine industry were all mentioned.

Mr Beresford also spoke on the healthcare services in Nagambie.

“Our healthcare expansion, is good but it needs more beds

and staff,” he said.

Mr Beresford spoke of the excellent wine and viticulture industry, which also need staff in the winemaking, bottling and resources areas and he reiterated the words of Mr Ryan.

“We need people,” he said.

Mr Beresford and Phil Brown of Country Education Partnerships then spoke on the plans for a Nagambie Youth Futures Program.

“We need to know how to retain our youth in Nagambie and how can we help them realise and capitalise and discover opportunities, new skills and new pathways here,” Mr Brown said.

A broadcast survey will be going out soon to local businesses to ask them to support this program that could benefit school leavers and lift their aspirations to work in a rural area like Nagambie.

A couple of collaboration programs were brought up like a cycling masterplan, Goulburn Regional Partnership, the alliance of Go Nagambie, Go Seymour and Avenel folk.

Meat the Farmer’ ideas: farm gate, seasonal trail events, and creating a visitor experience via a podcast.

Amanda Tingay, director of the Strathbogie Shire community and planning department, spoke on her role at the shire and the economic and development strategy plan that district businesses will be spoken to about their participation and ideas and how to share them with the shire.

Ivan Lister the regional rural outreach worker was the final speaker at the evening and he spoke on his role that is funded out of health services to help farmers and men, with mental, financial, social, stress, anxiety issues.

“I can assess and refer those in need to manage their life better, especially those with much stress, loneliness and isolation problems,” he said.

Nagambie Brewery and Distillery were thanked by GO Nagambie’s Lee Rowland for hosting the evening and for providing a tasty meal for all those who supported the night.

Actor discusses Euroa Health experience

Winter already being felt in Euroa

By GUS RIDDER WITH winter now underway, the region has seen a preview of what is to come with a streak of cold weather and rain over the last week.

Temperatures reached as low as -0.1 degrees Celsius at 3.30am on Thursday morning, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) indicating at that time it would have felt like -2.2C. The maximum temperature of 10.7C that Thursday would only feel like 7.4C per BOM’s weather data.

Heavy rainfall throughout autumn is expected to continue with the cold weather during winter.

16mm of rain on Tuesday, May 31 was the highest amount for the past month,

with the total monthly rainfall of 46.8mm higher than the average May rainfall by 4.6mm.

This follows a rain-filled April, where 98.6mm fell compared to the average April rainfall of 58.8mm.

In just the week finishing Monday, June 6 there was already 54.2mm of rain.

The BOM’s winter seasonal outlook predicts above median rainfall for most of Australia, with eastern and central regions very likely to exceed the median, chances above 80 per cent.

“Large parts of eastern Australia are around two to three times more likely than normal to have unusually high (in the top 20 per cent wettest of all past years) June to August rainfall,” BOM predicts.

THE June lunch for the Euroa Third Age Club will be held at Flam Shan on Thursday, June 9 at 12pm.

The cost of the event will be $16.50 for a twocourse meal and all members and seniors are welcome to attend.

The next meeting for the club will be held on Thursday, June 22 at 1.30pm - all are welcome.

A first ‘Afternoon Melodies’ will be held at the club on Thursday, July 21 with Jimmy and Jarryd Davidson providing entertainment.

There will also be a free Father’s Day concert to be held on Sunday, September 4 with Jimmy Davidson to perform.

Further details for both these events will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ms Hunter also pointed out that the return of Radiology to Euroa Health will change the way they can provide care to people attending the urgent care.

“I’ve called the hospital back to thank them for the service and I now understand that this Urgent Care Centre is a Bush Nursing Hospital which is one of only four left in the state.

“I want to shout from the roof tops how wonderful this facility is.

“I want to lend my voice to Euroa Health to help raise awareness and help the community realise what an asset you have in your town as it would be unimaginable and regrettable if the service was lost.

“I now often think as I travel throughout Australia, that I was lucky to be hurt in Euroa, and if only this was my local health service.”

COLD AND WET: Winter is well and truly underway in Euroa, with rain and freezing temperatures being recorded since the end of May.

ACTOR Shane Jacobson has spoken publicly about the experience he had at Euroa Health recently.

“I found myself standing at the door to the Urgent Care Centre at Euroa Health in Kennedy Street last month needing help with scrapes and cuts,” he said.

“My mind racing, will they even be able to help here, or am I going to be sent to Bendigo or Shepparton - or even Melbourne.

“We had parked at the door with a truck and there wasn’t any need to battle peak hour traffic or for a parking space and was placed on a bed straight away, seemed there was no four or five hour long wait in triage at Euroa Health - I did wonder if this was a dream.

“The care staff was firm and fair about what I needed, and of course compassionate which we all know our health service staff have in abundance.

“Whilst I tried to stay cool and keep the injuries low key thinking “I just don’t have time for this today”.

“The local GP on call, Dr Jimmy Huang promptly arrived after being called upon to start stitching up my injuries.

“He gave me the medications required to take home from the supply held in the hospital and I paid $60 for the service.

Jack Exell excellent with seven goals KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS IN cold wintery conditions Violet Town took on Dookie in a must win game; lose, they are playing to make up the finals; win, they challenge for top four, one man decided he wanted the latter.

Jack Exell kicked seven goals from centre half forward, had a hand in a few others and collected 23 possessions, his masterclass enabled the Towners to salute by 55 points after a dour first half wrestle.

Violet Town started the better and opened up a twogoal buffer early in the first quarter before some ill-disciplined acts gave Dookie two late goals.

Leading by a point at

quarter time the visitors took advantage of the scoring end to extend this to 15 points at the half.

With the game still on a knife’s edge, the on-ball brigade led by the “Bull” Ollie Ford, Lachie Baldwin and the Brazil twins decided to take charge, with Mellington opening the scoring in the third quarter with his third major, before an arm wrestle occurred for the next 15mins with neither team giving an inch, and Dookie not being able to take advantage of the ball spending time in their forward 50.

Exell decided enough was enough, kicking two long range goals into the wind to assert the Towners authority to take a 32 point lead at the final change.

With the four goals to one

seemingly breaking Dookie, the Towners went on to have nine scoring shots to one in the last quarter with Mellington and Exell putting the finishing touches on the match to salute by 55 points.

Zac Berthun was huge on the wing keeping the Towners in the game early then helping smother the opposition in the second half, 29 touches was all class.

The backline was steadfast miserly, conceding four goals in the first quarter they tightened up for the last three only allowing four more for the game.

Jimmy Herring again led all comers, 297 game veteran Tim Ross was also a standout until finally rested in the last term.

A bye this week will allow some sore bodies to rest,

and the Towners now take on the second half of the season hopefully setting up a tilt at the finals.

July 2 is now clearly on the radar, all going well Tim Ross will become just the fourth player in the clubs rich 127-year history to play 300 senior games that day at home, a product from our juniors this loyal champion deserves every accolade coming his way, stay tuned over the next few weeks as we begin to celebrate Tim’s great milestone.

RESERVES WITH Violet Town’s captain Jarrod Fox strangely winning the toss and kicking into the wind the game started as a real arm wrestle with neither team were able to put a major on the board in the first quarter, with the Violet Town players seeming more interested in arguing then playing football. Some stern quarter time words changed this and with big “Plugga” Sutherland at full forward saw the Towners take control with a six goal to one quarter to break the game open.

The third quarter was again an arm wrestle with Violet Town unable to take early advantage of forward 50 entries but still taking a 33-point lead into the final

term and at the scoring end were able to put the game to bed early with goals to Fox, Sutherland and Unger.

Aidan Kelly and Tyson Crawford were excellent down back and Ryan Sutherland could have easily kicked a big bag in his first appearance for the year in a promising showing.

Now six and two half way through the season the magoos have set themselves up for a crack at the top 4.

DOING HIMSELF PROUD: Hudson King shows off his second place ribbon from the Euroa district cross country championship.

Hudson King finishes second in cross country RECENTLY students, families and staff of Peranbin Primary College came together for the annual cross country event.

Once again the course allowed for both two and three kilometre races to be held, this year around the Violet Town campus boundaries.

With competitors forming three groups, based on the potential to qualify for the Euroa district events the following week, the most senior students lined up for the their 3km timed race.

The 11-13year age group set off at a steady pace and it wasn’t too long before they were home. Following them were the 9-10 year olds, running a 2km timed race.

The group were eager to get going, setting a cracking pace.

The final race of the day was also the largest group to compete - the 5-8 year

olds, in a two kilometre and unofficially timed race.

Hudson King was so fast that it almost appeared he hadn’t even raced; with Cole North hot on his tail, both boys chose to run a fourth lap of the course.

The day was a great success with 11 students qualifying for the district event.

Eight students chose to participate in this next level of competition: Matea King, Isla North, Jasper Tough, Lachlan Garden, Hudson King, Alex Dove, Connor Garden and Carter King.

Hudson, who is eight years old, finished second in his race of 8-9 year old boys.

Congratulations to everyone for their efforts to race, cheer on and support at both the Peranbin and Districts events here’s to more successful days next year.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE WELL winter is upon us here at Strathbogie; wind, hail, sleet, snow, rains, you name it, we got it.

But that didn’t defer the few that ventured out on Saturday, June 5.

The winner was Greg Roberts playing stroke with 76 nett.

A lineball was won by Alistair Thomson with 77 nett on a countback.

Nearest the pin on the 17th was also won by Alistair Thomson, and under extremely difficult conditions Shae Van der Schoor won the putting with twenty eight, unbelievable .

Next week will be stableford, the last round of the Wally Dunn Trophy.

Gary Hewlett is on Duty.

EUROA GOLF CLUB WINTER conditions, rain and snow on the nearby hills was enough to cancel the Wednesday competitions but 23 players took on the heavy track for the men’s Saturday Competition.

A number of ladies relocated their game to Strathbogie.

Good scores were carded despite conditions.

Cam Roper had another win with 36 points on countback from Peter Mc Mahon.

Matt Mills was one further back on 35 followed by Mick Anderson 34 Laurie Mc Martin 33 and Paddy McCarthy 32.

No one was good enough to take out the two ball which will jackpot.

Only one division was played as most of the division two players had succumbed to the elements or had chosen to go to the footy to buy a hot dog from David Baker.

In the Lewis Family knock out Cam Roper defeated Dick Farmer by plenty and Ross Wishart was a few up on Marcus Steers.

The semi-finals to be played are Cam Roper V Ross Wishart and Josh Bell v Dale Mcintosh.

The following matches are to be played in the Murphy Motors four ball event.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB IT was a monthly medal Sunday at the Nagambie golf club where the conditions were such that every golfer deserved a medal for braving what started as brief showers and strong wind gusts and turned into steady rain and temperatures dropping to very cold.

But our winner Des Phelan with his usual unfazed attitude and determination completed the round with 91-17-74, attributing much of his success to playing partners Greg Whiteman and Tim Baldwin for keeping things positive and him motivated in the tough conditions.

Runner up was visiting golfer Brad Bishop from the Hidden Valley golf club

feeling right at home in the cold and wind Bishop carded 87-13-74, another good finish for long-time Nagambie golfer Alby Seenan sneaking in with a masterful 94-19-75 to finish third.

A testament to the conditions on the day was the fact only one of the four nearest the pin prizes went off with regular Seymour visitor Jock Mundy holding onto the 13th.

Next week’s golf will be a stableford event with S. McCormick on office duty and D. Phelan in the bar.

On the first day of Winter, seven brave or stupid players turned out for a round of Stroke and the second round of the Social Club Competition.

We started off in conditions of four degrees and misty rain, that was supposed to clear.

There was only one grade and the winner was Annette Mills with 82 net.

The 9 hole winner was also Annette with 42 net.

18 hole balls went to Annette 82 net and Irene Keogh with 85 net.

9 hole balls went to Annette 42 net and Irene 44 net.

N/P on the third was Irene.

There were 21 players and the winner was Wayne Le Cerf with - 1 on a C/B from Barry Cryer.

N/P on the 3rd was Mick O’Connell and on the 16th Shaun Bryant.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB DESPITE the prediction of poor weather, the juniors came out in force on Saturday morning. Lachie O’Brien claimed the win in the scratch event with a solid 36 shots, three ahead of Will Lynch, with young gun, Charlie Lynch coming third.

Bob Taylor-White continued his fine form to win the nett, finishing even with his handicap.

Rayden Hannigan finished with 26 nett and Abby Eagles was third with 28 nett.

The Bank Street Pizza “play of the day” went to Rayden for his 25 metre hole out on the eighth hole, much to the delight of onlookers.

Well done everyone in very wintery conditions.

A smallish field of men ventured out in the afternoon for a stroke round off the White tees and it was a junior player stepping up for his second round in the men’s competition, who showed the way.

The elements were against us but our girls definitely brought the shine.

With a positive outlook, our girls took to the court full of determination and ready for the challenge.

Our strong defensive pressure and relentless efforts gave us many opportunities to advance the ball down to our hardworking shooters.

Our composure throughout our midcourt and some very smart decision making is a huge credit towards our win today.

The hard work is paying off and we’re seeing some fantastic netball from this talented team.

Tight defensive pressure and strong rebounding amassed several turnovers of the ball which was carried well by the midcourt to our ever-accurate shooters.

Trailing by only five goals heading into the third quarter we were determined to build on the first half, force some turnovers and take the lead.

Unfortunately though, the second half saw many unforced errors on our part and we were unable to keep possession of the ball.

The Swans were able to run away with a very convincing win despite the best efforts of our girls who fought hard until the final whistle.

IT JUST GETS BETTER: Longwood A grade defeated Avenel in a match for the history books.

C GRADE WELL what wet and miserable weather we had to play Netball in, but that we did.

It stopped us from giving it a good hard crack, with girls still out sick.

The team still fought hard right until the end.

BOC went to Elizabeth Howe for her intercepts and a great eye

for the ball, coaches went to Sarah Delahey not giving up and chasing after every loose ball.

Also Congratulations A Grade for a great win.

UNDER 17 THE first wet game of the season and the under 17s definitely had a challenge, but they adapted and played a good game.

The best on court goes to a girl

that tips off balls all game and that’s Cassie Rawlings. And coaches to a girl who shot really well and moved well in the ring and that was Lily Cooper UNDER 15 THE under 15’s went out without a key defender and our only other shooter, and against a strong opponent we knew the task at hand was going to be challenging.

The girls had to play in positions that they’ve never even trained in, and there was a lot of adjustments on the court which is not ideal in a game of netball.

Every single girl took it on their shoulders and did not argue back with me and encouraged each other on the court.

The score board really did not reflect the effort that each and every girl left out on the court today, in the rain and cold, as a coach I couldn’t ask for any more and I’m super proud.

BOC: Larni Shiner Coaches: Beth Pellegrino UNDER 13 THE under 13s had a tough game coming up against the top side whilst also having a key defender away.

The girls had great defensive pressure throughout the entire game with arms up over every ball and chasing after all loose balls.

Our best on this week went to Maylee Webber who had played the best game we had seen her play, she chased every loose ball and was getting in front of her player to lead for all passes.

Our coaches award this week went to Rylee Triscott who had great defensive pressure in the ring with arms up over every ball that came her way and chasing after every loose ball.

We are so proud of these girls for giving it a crack every single week.

RESERVES THE Longwood reserves took on ladder leaders Avenel in cold and wet conditions.

The boys hung in there all day with some really high quality contested footy, some strong tackling and great pressure around the footy.

Harry Skinner was best on ground with solid efforts across half back all day, Mick Hanson in for his first game of the season was solid in the ruck all day, And captain Beauden Webber was solid again, others to do well were Luke Allison, Jack Keane and Mitch Berry, overall a solid effort, well done boys enjoy the week off.

Euroa netballers continue to dominate Shepparton comp SNA Section 3 EUROA WHITE ROUND 6 Euroa White Vs Kyabram Stars ANOTHER cold Saturday morning and wet conditions at the Shepparton netball courts, but it did nothing to deter eight Under 11”s players who were ready and rearing to go.

Unfortunately, illness had hit some of our wonderful players and we were three teammates down.

Thank you to Grace and Ivy Burden who were able to jump in at the last minute to help fill the spot.

We really appreciate it.

The ball was wet and cold but Euroa White got off to a strong start.

A fabulous intercept from Leila Thompson in GD and then another from Brianna Maher in quick succession set the tone for a quarter that showed all the players strength in defense.

Goals were hard to come by with a wet ball and many

misses, but it highlighted our girl’s magnificent efforts defensively and their ability the get the ball back time after time and have another go.

Isla Moore showed particularly great persistence in GS and was eventually rewarded with a hard fought goal. 1-0 After a quick reminder from the coach at quarter time to focus on short, strong passes in the wet, the girls started the second quarter with same persistence in goals from Chloe Squires and Isla.

Daisy Cameron displayed tireless work in GD, both in defense and also in supporting our whole team to bring the ball down into our goal third.

Goals continued to be hard to come by, despite the girls managing to keep the ball in our attacking end. Another highlight of the quarter was hearing the great words of encouragement coming from our un-

The second half began with a changeup of positions and a strong early goal from Brianna Maher, closely followed by another confident goal from Daisy.

The tide was turning.

Through excellent persistence, belief and strong defense from all, the goals started to hit their mark. 9-0 As the Euroa White girls are developing through the

season, spectators are being treated to some beautiful passages of play from one end of the court to the other.

From Brianna, Grace and Leila in defence, through Chloe in C and on to Isla, Daisy and Zara Hill in the attacking third.

Zara shot three confident goals in her very first go at GS. Well done Zara.

ery Award, along with Brianna Maher, who received this week’s Funtastic Award for her persistent work in both attack and defense.

Then there was no stopping the Euroa girls, who worked beautifully as a team to convert seven very quick goals shot magnificently by Grace Hill and Maisy Wilson.

Ellie Robinson and Lara Saxon combined well in Centre and Wing Attack to continuously move the ball down the court to the shooters.

At the end of the first

quarter the scores were Euroa 13 to St Luke’s 0.

Grace Eddy was moved to center in the second quarter and didn’t stop running.

The ball work by the girls in this quarter was fantastic to watch.

Euroa’s dominance on the court continued into the third quarter.

Bethan Burton and Willow Timperley were strong in defense and made several spectacular intercepts followed by accurate passes to the mid girl courts to feed the ball into the goal third.

In the final quarter Isla Hahnel played her game of the season and did exactly what coach Kim had asked her to do.

Using Coach Kim’s words “Well done to each and every player. This win was a fantastic team effort, finished off with some beautiful shooting”.

Euroa netballers put best foot forward GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE THE Euroa girls seem to get off to a slow start after the interleague break making some unusual unforced errors.

Benalla were making Euroa work hard for their goals and with some experience in the Benalla ring the defenders took a little time to find their game plan with Bridget Hill and Tylah Marchbank having not spent much together in the ring this season.

The second quarter started to see Euroa backing each other and some lovely passages of play saw Euroa start to build a lead.

Karly Wappett and Bree Poole were moving in the ring well, with Kellie Davidson and Eliza Hoare feeding strongly.

Third quarter saw Bridget Hill lead the defense end with Tylah and Sophie Owen also putting a lot of pressure on the Benalla attack, forcing errors and Euroa capitalized on these well.

Euroa appeared to have the upper-hand for most of this quarter but Benalla did not relent with Chloe Hill from Benalla doing a great intercept in defense not to be outdone Euroa’s Bridget Hill immediately doing the same in Euroa’s defense.

Congratulations to Bree Poole for winning the Mickey Reed A Grade Netball Medal.

Euroa 60 Benalla 34 UNDER 17 ON the coldest day on Earth in recent living history, the U17 Euroa team played host to the Benalla Saints on Saturday for what many considered to be a great chance at their second win of the season. Unfortunately, once again, 15 minutes of poor play from the Magpies proved costly, with their dreams of a win falling into a wet, muddy heap midway through the second quarter.

In what was Sienna Trotter’s 50th game for the club, the Magpies were evenly matched in the first quarter, the game going goal for goal until the first break.

Molly Redfern and Sien-

na Trotter converted drives down the court onto the scoreboard, shooting with confidence and accuracy.

The dynamic defending duo of Millie Watson and Laura Frewen worked hard to niggle and bother the Saints shooters into making mistakes, and Chloe Salter, Lily Meehan and Hannah Kubeil were making space and smart decisions in the midcourt.

However, the second quarter saw the already ordinary conditions deteriorate further, with sleeting rain added a degree of difficulty to the game.

The Saints coped with this far better than the Magpies, successfully adjusting their game to allow for the wet, slippery conditions

and establishing a lead that they did not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Ongoing team rotations at the start of the third quarter saw a number of positional changes within the Magpie team, changes that paid dividends almost immediately.

Meg Walker and Abby Harrison on the wings allowed for fresh legs and a fresh drive into attack, with Sienna playing a very solid quarter of defense at goal keeper.

It was a blaze of light in the Magpie goal ring as redheads Lily Meehan, Molly Redfern and Millie Watson combined beautifully in attack, their beautiful hair and their beautiful netball skills dazzling the Saints players and supporters alike.

Alas, despite three competitive quarters of netball, the Magpies once again tasted the bitterness of defeat, going down by 12 goals to a very happy Benalla side.

Next week Euroa are off to Mansfield where the

weather and playing conditions are bound to be so much better.

Euroa 31 Benalla 42 Best players awarded by the Coach: Molly Redfern, Chloe Salter, Millie Watson UNDER 15 U 15 netball report 4-6-22 Euroa v Benalla DESPITE a chilly, wet day Euroa’s Under 15s got off to a mighty start.

Marnie Salter in WA, the “pocket rocket”, was quick to get the first center pass from Irish Anderson in Centre, allowing Ruby Watson at goal attack to nab the first goal for the game. Benalla missed their first goal opportunity and good defensive play by Tess Walker resulted in Euroa stealing possession and increasing their lead.

Euroa’s defense was strong.

Scarlett Trotter was sticking close to her player and Lilly Fowler rebounded well in goal defense.

It was the start of very physical tussle in the Euroa goal ring.

Despite the constant, unwanted attention from her opponent, Ella Hill played a solid game as the Magpie goal shooter, dealing well with the persistent bumps and contact that is so often a part of a game of netball.

The umpire stopped play relatively early in the game and asked all girls to “breathe”.

Ella did well to hold her position despite firm body on body tactics and along with Ruby Watson goaled well.

In the second quarter Issy Smith was brought on as goal shooter.

She made good leads out of the goal ring and fed the ball into Ruby Watson.

Oakley Paul came into defense and Tess Walker was moved to goal defense.

Both girls managed to intercept passes and maintain the pressure on Benalla.

In the third quarter, Ella returned to GS and Maggie Pittock came on as WD. Maggie Pittock loves to encourage her teammates and added to Euroa’s defense in a positive way.

The fourth quarter started with a quick goal to Euroa.

The pressure was intense.

Irish Anderson defended and attacked well and Oakley, Tess and Maggie made an awesome trio in defense.

Ruby Watson played her usual consistently high standard of netball, appearing completely unflustered by the competition.

At the final whistle it was a well-deserved and wellearned win to the Magpies.

Winter has arrived at Euroa FNC GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS COLD and wet conditions met the senior football side as they took to the ground last Saturday afternoon in Euroa to play Benalla.

With the Benalla club having to forfeit their reserves grade game of football due to not having enough players, the Euroa faithful were licking their lips at the prospect of watching some senior football by the time the 2pm start rolled around.

Jack McKernan (7 goals) and Jett Trotter (5 goals) both burst right out of the blocks as the tone was set for the afternoon inside what was a very dominant first quarter.

The superb delivery from up the ground, provided in large part by the attacking half back line of Nate Trotter, Dan Garside and Jack Frewen, meant the supply up forward was consistent in nature.

Benalla rallied somewhat, stemming the flow of goals in the second and third quarters as the game moved into a phase where neither side was really asserting any dominance.

Despite this, the urging from the senior coach, Scott Rowan, at the last break was for his team to ‘put down the foot’ and take the game right away from their Benalla opposition.

The team responded well to this urging with 50 gamers Jayden Gleeson and Jarmyn Tremellen both setting up plenty of attacking moves in what was an eight goal to one

last quarter effort.

Tristan Davies and Ben Giobbi both ended the day with a couple of goals each with eight players hitting the scoreboard throughout the afternoon.

The win sealed the Rob Robinson cup for Euroa for a fifth year in succession whilst the inaugural Les Reed medal for best on ground medal was taken home by Jack McKernan.

This team has now won six games in a row and travels to Mansfield with the intent of making amends for their firstround loss to the Eagles.

By NICHOLAS McCABE WITH a huge sniff at their first opportunity for a win in season 2022, the thirds boys welcomed arch-rival Benalla down the highway feeling fully refreshed to attack the back-half of the season after the bye.

With pressure mounting on his contract and the ultimatum of ‘win or bust’ lingering, coach Hill was chomping at the bit to see his side secure their maiden victory of the season.

Wet conditions made play-

ing conditions difficult however, Euroa’s smalls relished the moment with Mitch Walters getting the Magpies on the board thanks to a sublime snap around the body.

Keily Jager followed suit with a right foot snap on goal of his own which saw momentum swing fully in favor of the home team.

Although winning plenty of the football, following up with consecutive inside 50’s Benalla never looked like scoring thanks to Charlie Watson’s stellar intercept defending and Nic Hill’s exquisite ball use by foot.

This rebounding defending regularly linked up with Keily Jager and Will Creevey through the middle of the ground, surging the ball forward in the slippery conditions. Quick ball movement saw center half Caid Miller presenting beautifully up the ground clunking multiple contested grabs whilst Ryan Hill was at his feet when the ball came to ground.

Inevitably Euroa controlled the contest all day and never looked in doubt in what could only be described as a complete team performance, the side securing their first win of season - a great reward for a lot of effort.

Post-match coach Hill labelled the win as an “outstanding performance” however, undoubtedly was breathing a sigh of relief knowing his job is safe (for now).

Euroa getting into stride with Maya making great leads at centre break getting the ball down to Martha in GS, who put Euroa on the board with our first goal.

Charlie and Maggie strong in defence with a couple of great intercepts resulting in several goals in a row by Ella.

Second Quarter: Maggie and Charlie strong in defence, getting some good rebounds.

St Mary’s tried fighting back with three goals in a row, but the Euroa girls tightened their play to hold on to win by four goals.

Final Score: St Mary’s 29, Euroa - 33 Best On: Maggie Pittock UNDER 13 JUNIOR NETBALL THE under 13 Magpies got back on the winners list on Sunday after victory in what was a low-scoring affair at Seymour.

Both sides struggled to adapt to the wet and slippery conditions and only managed one goal each in the opening term Euroa settled in the second quarter and shot four goals to St Mary’s three in the second quarter.

But it was the third quarter where the magpies sealed the win and outscored St Mary’s by four

goals.

Once again Jade Raleigh GD was rock solid in defence and was ably assisted

by Issy Smyth at GK. The pair kept the Magpies in the game when They were being outplayed elsewhere on the court.

Zahara Johns was again impressive at WA and successfully supported the shooters who were wellheld for much of the match.

The Magpies won by four goals 10-6.

Scott Watson inducted into GVFL Hall of Fame EUROA Football Netball Club legend Scott Watson has been officially inducted into the Goulburn Valley Footbal League Hall of Fame.

Watson is a popular name around the club, holding the position of club president for 12 years and serving on the committee for the same 12.

His enthusiasm and passion for football did not start where it does for most, in juniors, Watson did not discover his talent until the ripe age of 21, when he asked for a kick at Longwood Football Netball Club.

He fell in love with the sport, spending two years at Longwood before transferring to the EFNC, where he would begin an amazing sporting career with the Magpies as a player, administrator and coach over the span of 30 years.

Watson was a natural, quickly developing into a stel-

This talent did not go unrecognised, and Scott was selected as a league squad member, representing the GVFL on

four occasions.

In 1998 Watson was invited by the GVFL to coach the under 18 representative side, a role he took on with enthu-

siasm and continued for 13 years.

He spent 13 years as the senior captain at EFNC, including a grand final showdown in 2005 and winning the Magpies best player award, plus three times runner up.

Since then, Watson has become a qualified life member of the GVFL and concluded his senior playing career on his 365th senior game.

However, he couldn’t give up the game, continuing with the reserves team, clocking up 55 reserves game and aged 44 in 2013 winning the reserves best player award.

In 2014 Watson’s hard work and dedication was finally rewarded as a part of the Euroa reserves premiership team.

Outside of the Euroa Football Netball Club Watson has coached the Victorian under 15 schoolboys’ football team and the Goulburn Murray under 15 schoolboys’ team.

Local talent Will Hayes drafted to Carlton THE Hayes name is certainly not unknown around the township of Euroa, but where usually the chatter is related to horses, Will Hayes is Carlton’s newest pickup in the AFL mid-season rookie draft last week.

After the Western Bulldogs

didn’t renew Hayes’s contract last season, he didn’t think himself much of a chance to reach elite level again.

“He’s a smart footballer and he knows how to find the Sherrin, as we’ve seen for the Carlton reserves this season,” Carlton’s head of list

management told ‘the run down’.

“He can play a number of roles and he has been one of our best at the level.”

While Hayes certainly was aware that he was a rough chance to be picked up by the Carlton seniors, he said

he was thankful for the transparency and communication of the club prior to the draft.

With talent and experience, the future of Hayes’ career is looking bright and Euroa looks forward to following along every step of the way.

A grade netballers’ claim golden win LONGWOOD FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB A BREAKTHROUGH A grade netball win was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for Longwood on a wet, dreary Sunday at Avenel.

The win saw the Leggers post their most successful ever campaign in the Kyabram District league, with a third win of the season, as well as a first triumph over the Swans.

It was a dampener that Redlegs netball supremo Meg Pellegrino couldn’t be there to see the triumph, with the club sending best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

The under-13s had a tough encounter with a top side, hampered by the loss of a ket defender.

Defensive pressure remained high, with the best-on-court Maylee Webber playing her best game for the Leggers and the coach’s award going to Rylee Triscott.

The under 15s faced a similar dilemma, also a key defender down, but had players shuffle and give their best in unfamiliar positions.

Best-on-court was Larni Shiner and the coach’s award went to Beth Pellegrino.

Wet weather netball was a new challenge for the under 17s, as they adapted to give their all.

Cassie Rawlings was best-on-court, while shooter Lily Cooper received the coach’s award.

C grade gave their best, despite the inclement weather, fighting the clash out until the end.

Best-on-court was Elizabeth Howe with her interceptions a highlight, while the coach’s award went to Sarah Delahey.

B grade was super competitive in the first half, trailing by a slender margin at half-time.

Unforced errors proved critical as the game wore on and the Swans proved too good.

Best-on-court was Larni Shiner and the Coach’s Award went to Maddi Milne.

It was a welcome sight to see the graduation of yet another under 18 product to the senior football team as Harry Shiner made his debut.

Donning the number nine guernsey, synonymous with the Shiner name, the youngster looks to have a bright career ahead of him at the Leggers.

It was an otherwise bleak day for the senior Leggers, who found the going tough against one of the ladder leaders.
