This mid-year review was put forward to council in an initial meeting at the end of February by director of people and governance Dawn Bray with recommendations that it be endorsed by council.

Councillor Kristy Hourigan moved a motion to note the review

but not endorse it due to the Audit and Risk Committee being unable to provide their insight on it.

In the initial meeting, Ms Bray said that not endorsing the mid-year review would mean that council was not endorsing

proposed changes to the capital works budget and that it would have an impact on the ability of council to move forward with flood recovery projects.

Ms Bray adamantly spoke about why it was in council’s best interest to endorse the review.

“Officers certainly wouldn’t provide that advice, from our perspective you have to make sure that we’re financially sustainable and

this would jeopardise that,” she said.

“We’ve worked really hard to get ahead of the curve in terms of other councils for contractors.

“I would strongly recommend that we consider that position because it would mean that we be later on in the process for procurement and might not be successful in getting tenderers for those works.

Changes to road rules arrive this month

NEW road rules are being introduced regulating the use of a range of portable, wearable and inbuilt devices while driving a vehicle or riding a motorbike.

The rules expand and clarify a number of rules already in place for mobile phones, and take effect on March 31, 2023.

The rules reflect the significant increase of in-vehicle technologies and other technologies capable of distracting a driver and are designed to help keep people safe on our roads.

The rules are expanded from mobile phones and visual display units to cover:  portable devices (unmounted mobile phones, tablets);  wearable devices (smartwatches, wearable heads-up display);  inbuilt devices (Information, navigation, and entertainment systems, heads-up display that is an inbuilt part of the vehicle);  mounted devices (Heads-up display, tablet, mobile phone, media player etc if securely mounted in or on a vehicle); and  motor bike helmet devices.

Rules for L and P platers are different to those for fully licensed drivers.

Drivers who hold a full licence in general cannot touch an unmounted portable device, such as a phone, tablet, laptop or any other device while driving.

Specifically, for all device types (portable, mounted, wearable and inbuilt) you must not, while driving:  enter text, numbers or symbols;  scroll (such as on websites, social media, playlists);  play videos or games or take video calls;

 display text messages, social media, emails, or photos; and  rest a device on any part of the body, or pass a device to a passenger.

If you drive for work and need to interact with a device to do certain tasks then these professional driving tasks will be permitted under the rules.

“I’d be derelict in my duty if I did not point that out to you.”

Cr Hourigan outlined her position when speaking to her motion.

“I respect very much what director Bray is saying in regards to this particular mid-year review and what the effects could possibly be should we vote in favour of going ahead,” she said.

“I think it’s very important that we have a risk and audit committee for a reason and they are to check these financial statements and reviews on our behalf and to provide us with advice.

“I don’t feel comfortable endorsing a document without having them see it first.”

Councillor Chris Raeburn spoke in opposition to the motion, questioning why the audit and risk committee would be involved in the first place.

“I’m at a loss to understand why the audit and risk committee is being involved in this,” he said.

“Audit and risk do not make recommendations to council, they may advise or give guidance, but they do not make recommendations.

“You are jeopardising the operation of this council - its liquidity, its viability and even staff morale is going to be blown to pieces.

“You are destroying everything absolute fabric of what local government is about.”

Despite the comments from Ms Bray and Cr Raeburn, the motion was carried with a vote of four to two.

In response to the decision, an extraordinary council meeting was called last week with rescissions about the decision put forward in a statement by opposing members of council.

“Council is now placed in a challenging financial position where flood recovery contracts cannot be issued due to lack of funding provision,” the statement read.

“By not endorsing the midyear review, which has been formed to reprioritise funds and human resources on flood recovery, we consider that this

places council in the untenable position where roadworks such as the Harrys Creek Road contract variation are not funded in the current budget.

“This flood repair work to fix our roads, something that the community has told us is a priority, has now been undermined by not approving the mid-year review.”

At the extraordinary council meeting, Cr Hourigan noted that she had informal discussions with members of the Audit and Risk Committee and was now satisfied that she could proceed with the recommendation to endorse the mid-year review.

The notice of rescission was passed unanimously, endorsing the mid-year budget review.

VICTORIAN apprentices who travel across the border for work will benefit from the expansion of the State Government’s Trade Apprentice Registration Discount scheme.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne last week announced the scheme has been expanded to give apprentices who live in Victoria but are working in New South Wales and South Australia the same savings as those who live and work in Victoria only.

Under the scheme, eligible Victorian apprentices can apply for a 50 per cent discount on their vehicle’s registration fee and Transport Accident Charge, saving them hundreds of dollars.

Apprentice bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, joiners, bakers and plumbers are among the professionals who are eligible for the Trade Apprentice Registration Discount.

“We’re putting more money back in the pockets of Victorian apprentices so they can get the skills they need for their future careers,” Ms Horne said.

“Bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians and plumbers rely on our roads to get to and from each job - with many travelling across the border for work.

“That’s why we’re giving our apprentices the support they need, with the expansion of this scheme to ensure those who travel to New South Wales and South Australia for work have access to the same discounts.”

The scheme’s expansion is expected to put more money back in Victorian apprentices’ pockets and means apprentices travelling across the border for work can access the same discounts regardless of whether they choose to work and study in Victoria or interstate.

Around 400 Victorians currently completing their apprenticeships in New South Wales or South Australia will benefit from the scheme.

The Trade Apprentice Registration Discount was introduced in 2016 to reduce costs for apprentices using their own vehicle for work purposes.

La Nina likely near its end heading into autumn LA Nina has weakened in the tropical Pacific Ocean and is likely near its end according to a report released by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) last week.

It has been an unmissable force for the past three years, with floods and heavy rains felt particularly strong across the North East of Victoria.

La Nina’s demise is expected to result in far less moisture and a swing back towards El Nino will likely result in warmer conditions and the threat of bushfires.

The bureau report shows that ocean indicators of La Nina have returned to neutral levels, while atmospheric indicators that remain at La Nina

levels have started to weaken.

The report has come about at a time where Euroa had not seen any rain since February 5, until overnight on Sunday when 13mm was recorded in Euroa.

Temperatures have begun to decrease, particularly at night with the presence of cool breezes returning.

Farming plan to go carbon neutral Haines calls on funds for network of 200 agricultural g officers INDI MP Helen Haines says the government must support farmers to reduce emissions and access lucrative carbon markets, as she launched a plan to give practical support and advice through a network of extension officers.

Ahead of the Federal Budget in May, Dr Haines has called on the government to fund a network of 200 agricultural extension officers across 20 regional centres to support farmers to achieve Carbon Neutral certification, as well as implement new technologies and practices that help reduce emissions.

“Farmers must be at the forefront of government planning for action on climate change,” she said.

“Farming currently generates 16 per cent of Australia’s emissions.

“At the same time, we know farmers are already feeling the effects of climate change on their land and their businesses.

“When I talk to farmers across Indi, I hear a consistent message that farmers want to reduce emissions and participate in the carbon market, but there is simply not enough support to do so.”

“They are already working huge hours to run their farm businesses and this program would provide relevant, local information that would actually help them.”

“They can make money in the domestic carbon market and make their farms more productive, but that’s just the start.

“We know reducing emissions across farming has been an issue in the free trade agreement negotiations with the European Un-

ion and our farmers could face tariffs from countries around the world due to a lack of climate action so far.

“My plan would help protect our industry’s access to overseas markets.”

Dr Haines has met with Agriculture Minister Murray Watt several times since the election to pitch the program.

“I am confident that Minister Murray Watt understands the value of a policy like this,” she said.

“He knows how important it is to offer real support to farmers and I am committed to working with the government to make this happen.

“I hope to see this in the budget in May and rolled out soon after.”

National Tidy Towns judge visits Euroa AFTER being crowned the Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) Victorian Sustainable Community Tidy Town of 2022, Euroa has been named as a national finalist.

Cr Binks explained the submission process.

“There are nine categories for the KAB Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards and we entered all nine of these,” she said.

“For each category, we presented an example of how our community was tackling that space.

“We took Gail around the township to meet with the category entrants to discuss their projects or programs in more detail.”

“It was fantastic to share some of our incredible community leaders, environmental champions, young legends and waste warriors with Gail and to showcase the incredible spirit throughout Euroa.”

As part of the visit, Ms Langley spent time with

members of council and local residents at the council chambers, the Bowerbird Op Shop, Binney Street, the Euroa Energy Microgrid and Solar Pergola, Euroa Lawn Tennis Club and the Euroa Arboretum.

While seeing the Euroa Energy Microgrid, Ms Langley was joined by Shirley Saywell and Damon Rieusset to talk about the benefits the project has had.

The 2023 KAB Australian Tidy Town of the Year will be announced on Friday, May 19 in King Island which took out the 2022 award.

There will be a case study presentation in the morning where all towns from every state will present their entries followed by an awards event at the King Island Golf Club.

Connor’s Erg finishes with massive funds raised

By GUS RIDDER EUROA locals have come together over the past month to raise much needed funds and awareness for children with brain cancer, totalling $58,602 from their fantastic efforts.

The Euroa Gym hosted the Connor’s Erg Challenge, hosted by the Robert Connor Dawes (RCD) Foundation, and worked with various local businesses, organisations, sports teams, and individuals to raise the amount they have.

The rowing challenge and foundation are champions for battling paediatric brain cancer which kills more children than any other disease by funding research, care and development projects, backing the science to end paediatric brain cancer and supporting patients in the meantime.

The Euroa Gym owner Daniel Godsmark spoke before this year’s edition saying they entered a team for the first time in February last year, after the event had typically been based in the United States.

Mr Godsmark was pleased to confirm that they had smashed their $50,000 target and had plans to back it up again next year.

“The total was $58,602 which was pretty unbelievable,” he said.

“To top last year was amazing, we were stoked with that.

“The community really

got around it, clubs and groups from across the region came and participated.

“The organiser Liz Dawes came up from Melbourne and we had politicians like Annabelle Cleeland join in too.

“We had over 100 people jump on a rower and get involved.

“We have so many people we want to thank for donat-

ing and getting around it.”

Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease, which many local Euroa residents are aware of, and have seen the tragedy of personally.

Chelsea’s mother Tracey Johnson explained just how important the RCD Foundation was for their family.

“The foundation has been imperative to my daughter’s treatment - if it wasn’t for the foundation her treatment would have been far more invasive,” she said.

Tracey said the foundation had enabled more specified treatments for particular brain cancers and also noted the incredible work Dustin had completed in attracting more Australian government funding for brain cancer research.

She said it was incredibly important to also continue to work on methods of early detection as Chelsea had been a healthy six-year-old before being diagnosed.

“We need to continue to support and hopefully with more research we can try and find earlier markers of brain cancers and hopefully get to a point one day when treatment is even less invasive,” Tracey said.

Careful what you wish for THE underpass proposal to replace the Anderson Street overpass is essentially an open trench in approximately the same footprint as the current structure.

It will have three metre high fences on both sides to prevent people from falling in, and there will be two footbridges to enable people to cross from one side to the other of the underpass.

The overpass proposal follows a similar footprint, and is an elevated roadway, which includes approximately 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the footprint as usable open space underneath.

Railway Street will be

extended, to join Hinton Street.

The area gained underneath the roadway would be open space for gardens and unhindered pedestrian access.

The North-Eastern Hotel would be clearly visible from Railway Street.

Access to the railway station is exactly the same for both proposals.

I believe that the overpass is the better option.

The extension of Railway Street and the extra unhindered space gained, is worth having.

The open space under the elevated roadway allows a clear view and access to the other side of the railway line as well.

The only perceived advantage of the underpass that I can see, is visual.

The overpass does not divide

the town - the railway line does that and it is not changing.

Elevated railway lines in Melbourne and Sydney have been a success and the same could apply to an elevated roadway in Euroa.

Thank you to our CFA members AS we head into autumn, now is a great time to say thank you to our local CFA crews for their incredible work, day in day out.

So many local brigades and volunteers put in long and draining hours to battle the major Flowerdale blaze, that took six days to get under control.

Some 200 volunteers, 50 trucks and nine water-bombing aircraft were on site to protect the region and control the fire that burnt across incredibly difficult terrain.

All this occurring so quickly after a sizeable grass fire in the Seymour-Puckapunyal region.

We owe a heartfelt thank you to our CFA for everything they do.

They are the lifeblood of our communities and upstanding citizens.

While summer is over, the fire threat is not.

This recent fire activity is a reminder to stay alert, download the VicEmergency app and have a fire plan in place.

Hopes for “final nail in coffin” for duck shooting

By STEVE KELLY ANIMAL Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell is hoping an inquiry into native bird hunting will be the death knell for duck shooting in Victoria.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation Sonya Kilkenny announced on recently the Labor Government will move to establish a Legislative Council Select Committee to examine recreational native bird hunting in Victoria.

The committee will have wide-ranging terms of reference, including the operation of the annual recreational native bird hunting seasons, arrangements in other Australian jurisdictions, their environmental

sustainability and impact on amenity, and their social and economic impact.

The MP for Northern Victoria said this select committee should have been established years ago.

“It will be too late for the thousands of birds that will be killed this season, along with the habitat destruction that the shooters often leave behind,” Ms Purcell said.

“However, I will be doing everything I possibly can to be a member, and ensure this inquiry is the final nail in the coffin.”

The government confirmed on last month that a five-week duck hunting season would

commence on April 26 and hunters will have to abide by a four bird bag limit.

While pro-duck hunting groups were complaining about the short season, Ms Purcell said she was “deeply disturbed and disgusted” by the State Government’s “pitiful decision” to allow a 2023 duck shooting season to go ahead.

“Restricted length and bag limits mean nothing when shooters have proven themselves time and time again to be lawless,” Ms Purcell said.

“The premier has just committed to another year of carnage and cruelty on our wetlands and once again volunteers will be forced to clean

up the mess.

“The government had all the information available to them to do the right thing, and they know that the majority of Victorians strongly oppose duck shooting.”

Public hearings will be held by the committee to hear from hunting associations, animal welfare groups, and regional communities during the consultation period.

A motion to establish the committee will be moved by the government in the Legislative Council during the next sitting week (from March 7), and subject to its passage, a final report will be due to be tabled by August 31.

Road Safety Grants are available now NATIONALS Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, is encouraging eligible community organisations to apply for road safety grants with applications closing on March 15.

“Road safety is an ever-increasing problem particularly across regional Victoria where our rapidly deteriorating roads have seen a concerning increase in road trauma statistics,” Ms Cleeland said.

“While the Andrews Government must take responsibility for repairing our crumbling roads network, grassroots organisations can also play a role in community safety.

“Applying for a road safety grant is a fantastic way for community organisations to get involved by helping to raise road safety awareness.

“Programs that could be funded under this grant stream include road signage, bike education and road safety programs as well as pedestrian safety measures.”

Road safety grants are available to incorporated associations with an ABN, Local Government Authorities, and schools.

Ms Cleeland said there is only a short window in which to apply for the road safety grants so

(who plays Jesus in the highly successful ,‘The Chosen’ series) A steady stream of students including Laurie, came searching for Truth; and shortly there-after, occurred a powerful time of revival, rock and roll and hippies ‘on fire’ for Jesus-which changed America.

Times are very hard for current generations, living in an ‘awokened’ world rather than a ‘God-awakened’ one. CAMPAIGNING ROAD SAFETY: Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging eligible organisations to apply for road safety funding - but be quick. it is important for community groups to act quickly.

“This is great opportunity for local schools to gain needed funding to facilitate learning programs around cycling, being a safe driver, passenger and pedestrian as well as understanding roadside signage,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Bike education is a very important program that is often

taught in schools - it provides young people with a solid foundation about understanding road safety rules and measures.

“I encourage schools and community groups to consider applying for funding to help address the important issue of road safety locally.”

By GUS RIDDER LOCAL tennis coach Greg Rowe has announced his retirement, ending his career as a much-loved instructor and hitting partner for many of the region’s tennis players.

Mr Rowe first came to the region during COVID, immediately finding that some of the tennis courts were in need of attention.

“I drove around and noticed there were heaps of tennis clubs and tennis courts in Euroa that were being underutilised,” he said.

“I was staying up in Strathbogie and ran into Craig Mercuri, who’s a really passionate tennis guy.

“The club there had been closed for 14 years and we reopened it, cleaned it up and had a working bee.

“Two years later they won the comp, so it was really nice to see that happen.

“I then moved down to Euroa, I’d played at the tournament there before and it was a big reason for the move.”

Mr Rowe speaks extremely fondly about his time coaching tennis and the wide array of people he has met through the role.

“Tennis attracts really nice people, it really does,” he said.

“It’s always just been a hobby for me but I’ve really met so many wonderful people doing it.

“My youngest student is four and a half, and my oldest is 79 and uses a wooden racquet.

“I’ve been lucky to have players go on to really good things, get scholarships and go to great schools too.”

COACH RETIRES: Much loved local tennis instructor Greg Rowe has retired after years of service to the local community, training players of all ages and abilities.

Mr Rowe’s unique coaching style, branding himself as the “Christian tennis coach”, has opened doors for him both in terms of meeting clients and making lifelong friendships.

“I met lots of people in town and thought I’d put something up and brand myself as a Christian tennis coach,” he said.

“I put three ads in the Gazette at the time and then had 27 families ring me up asking about lessons.

“I’m a Christian guy and I just thought if we had things where we didn’t get too uptight and didn’t have to throw our racquets, it would probably be a

good thing.

“McEnroe and a few others got us a bit spoilt, making tennis a bit of a brat sport.

“I’ve never pushed it, if people ask me I’ll tell them, but what’s come from it are some really deep friendships.

“People have me in their homes, meeting their families, it’s just been great.”

Unlike some of the aforementioned players, Mr Rowe jokingly said he found himself “encouraging the opposition” when he plays.

Mr Rowe has had a longstanding friendship and coaching partnership with Mark

Borthwick, someone he says is more than capable to fill any void left by his retirement and who has had a lasting impact on the sport across the region.

“I had run in to Mark Borthwick before at a tennis competition and he was the one to answer the phone when I called the club in Euroa,” Mr Rowe said.

“It was the beginning of a great friendship.

“I feel that now is time to call it a day, I know everyone will be in good hands with him.”

Euroa’s tennis is without a doubt in a good place according to Mr Rowe, saying the town’s recent recognitions have been thoroughly deserved.

“I’ve been across the world and seen best practice when it comes to coaching,” he said.

“Euroa tennis is truly up there, having Mark Borthwick who is an elite player, elite coach and great bloke, really helps.

“I believe Euroa tennis has really thrived recently; we saw the Lawn Tournament and the Furphy family win the national award recently.”

Plans are already set for his post retirement life, with Mr Rowe still eager to have tennis play a big role in his life.

“After I get my replacement knees re-done and a bit of rehab, I’ll be back around as a hitting partner for those interested,” he said.

“Ultimately though, it’s now time for me to spend some more time with the grandkids.

“I’m also really involved with the Salvation Army in Melbourne and will be getting back into uniform now.”

Planned burns are on to reduce bushfire risk FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) will take advantage of favourable weather and forest conditions to undertake planned burns across northeast Victoria in the coming weeks to reduce the threat of bushfires to the community.

FFMVic deputy chief fire officer Jarrod Hayse spoke about the need to reduce potential bushfire impact through planned burns.

“Planned burning is one of the most effective ways we can reduce the impact bushfires have on people, property and the environment,” he said.

“Reducing ground level fuels such as leaves, sticks, and fallen branches means fires are less intense and slower to spread, making it more likely that firefighters can keep bushfires small and contained before they pose a risk to communities.

“The wetter and cooler conditions this summer will mean communities can expect to see firefighters conducting planned burns if the weather and forest conditions are suitable and it is safe to do so.”

High priority burns are planned on public land near Bright, Corryong, Kinglake, Marysville, Seymour and Wangaratta.

PLANNED BURNS: To reduce the threat of bushfires, Forest Fire Management Victoria will begin scheduling planned burnings across Northern Victoria.

PHOTO: Forest Fire Management Victoria “People in these communities may see and smell smoke, and some roads and forests may be closed for public safety while these works are being undertaken,” Mr Hayse said.

“We know that smoke from planned burns may concern some people, and we work with communities and stakeholders to reduce smoke impacts as much as possible.

“However, it’s important that crews take every opportunity to reduce fuel loads while condi-

tions are suitable.”

FFMVic works closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions - such as humidity, temperature, and wind speed - and will only carry out burns when conditions are safe to do so.

The fuel management program is underpinned by scientific evidence and local knowledge, including bushfire history, to make sure works are focused where they can be most effective.

As well as burning, FFM-

Vic crews conduct mechanical works such as mowing, slashing, clearing, and creating and maintaining strategic fuel breaks to reduce bushfire risk.

FFMVic also works with Traditional Owners to deliver its fuel management program and supports aspirations to undertake cultural burning practices.

Do you know what the difference between equality and equity is?

DESPITE the similarities in their wording, equity and equality are inherently different concepts, and the International Women’s Day 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme seeks to help forge worldwide conversation about this issue and its impact - a notion that suggests equal opportunities are no longer enough - and can in fact be exclusionary, rather than inclusive.

Leadership and inclusion specialist and former

criminal barrister, Sharon Amesu, said when we’re talking about embracing equity, it’s so important that we distinguish between equity and equality.

“Both are important, but they are very different,” she said.

So, what’s the difference between equity and equality - and why is it important to understand, acknowledge and value this?

Let’s start with a basic definition of each word.

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.

Equity recognises that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

Equity can be defined as giving everyone what they need to be successful.

In other words, it’s not giving everyone the exact same thing.

If we give everyone the exact same thing, expecting that will make people equal, it assumes that everyone started out in the same place - and this can be vastly inaccurate because everyone isn’t the same.

The concept of ‘fairness’ can get tricky as it’s often assumed that ‘being fair’ means that everybody gets the same thing.

By KATE AUTY A GROUP of 30 women met on Sunday at the Euroa Cinema to celebrate International Women’s Day. Women came from Mansfield, Beechworth, Shepparton and Benalla to hear from speakers, watch the film ‘Women of Steel’ about the ‘jobs for women’ campaign in Wollongong and enjoy home -made cakes and morning tea.

Speakers who were introduced by Angela Tough, a teacher at the Euroa Secondary College, included Rien Silverstein, Amanda Kelly and Kate Auty.

Rien Silverstein will be known for her work with Australian Women in Agriculture, the Victorian Farmer’s Federation, and as a horticulturalist and farmer.

She is a legend as having mentored many women in the agricultural industry and in regional contexts.

GATHERED: Some 30 women gathered at the Euroa Cinema on Sunday to celebrate International Women’s Day. Amanda Kelly is a leader in women’s health and is currently on the board of GOTAFE. She has chaired the Pride Centre and is a champion of gender equity.

She recently took up her position in Wangaratta in respect of women’s health

and is brimming with enthusiasm for all the activity she sees in our region.

Kate is a member of the Euroa community involved in the campaigns to deliver an underpass at Anderson Street and to encourage a “Yes” vote in the upcoming Referendum on enshrin-

ing an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the Constitution.

Those who attended the film, morning tea and discussion all hoped that the event would be repeated next year.

Women who succeeded in gaining ‘equality’ IN the 19th Century women in particular were not recognised as ‘equal’ and held a lower social standing than men - but International Women’s Day - celebrated today (Wednesday, March 8) acknowledges some women who led the charge in gaining equality for all women.

Berth Morisot was one of only a few female artists of her time, her work was often demeaned by male critics and worked hard t gain ‘equality’ for her works joining a small group of artists who became known as masters of the Impressionist era.

Despite this criticism, Morisot was accepted to exhibit her work at the prestigious Salon de Paris. In critical reviews following an exhibition in 1880, many judged Morisot’s work to be among the very best on display.

Morisot wrote about her struggles to be taken seriously, “I don’t think there has ever been a man who treated a woman as an equal and that’s all I would have asked for, for I know I’m worth as much as they”.

Although at the time it was the fight to recognised women as having equal talents as men, it was also about equity - she

was given the same means to create her work but just needed to ‘fit into’ the niche world of art and be recognised as worthy.

She became one of the world’s greatest Impressionist artists of her time - and still has that standing today.

The second woman to stand out in this era, and to gain recognition and ‘equality’

of the times was Mary Stevenson Cassatt - denied the opportunities to create her artworks and to be taught by a male dominated art world, Stevenson decided to teach herself.

She enjoyed early career success being one of the first two women ever to be accepted to exhibit at the Salon, the most prestigious art exhibition of the era.

Cassatt became a supporter of equal rights for not only women but for artists no matter what social standing they may have had.

Today International Women’s Day has the theme #EmbraceEquity - if you believe in forging an equal and inclusive world, then you will truly believe in the need for the world to better understand the difference between equity and equality.

Since then, courts have adopted the principle of equity, taking a case-bycase approach to consider differing circumstances.

Equality focuses on providing all genders with equal opportunities, such as a woman’s right to vote.

According to the IWD theme, a shift from gender equality to the process of gender equity is required for meaningful progress.

Network Ramps Up Boating Opportunities For Women THE number of women in recreational fishing has increased rapidly in the five years since the Andrews Labor Government established an award-winning network for female fishers, which will now be expanded to include recreational boating.

Since being established on International Women’s Day in 2018 the network has grown rapidly to include more than 4100 members from around Victoria, Australia and abroad.

This includes 20 leaders promoting the network and advocating for women in fishing.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Sonya Kilkenny last week celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Women in Recreational Fishing Network, which will become Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB).

Ms Kilkenny said: “It’s wonderful to see more women getting involved in the industry and the WIRFAB Network provides an inclusive, inspiring environment for female fishers and boaters to foster their passion.”

The network’s success was recently recognised on the global stage at the 10th World Recreational Fishing Conference, scoring an award for excellence in promoting inclusive participation in recreational fishing.

It includes beginners to experts and provides a welcoming place to share stories, experiences and tips.

This will now extend to recreational boating and will cover a range of topics from professional development opportunities to practical skills-based events such as trailer reversing clinics.

Several leaders and members have gone on to land careers in the industry, including Bendigo-based tackle store manager Karen Rees and Australian Fishing Network presenter Michelle Brittain.

Ms Brittain said she has always had a passion for fishing and the network has helped her harness it and turn it into a career.

“Now I’m able to use what I’ve learned to give back to other women hoping to forge their own path in fishing and boating,” she said.

Others also feature on fishing TV and radio shows or podcasts and several have joined advisory boards and committees including the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust Advisory committee, which guides the reinvestment of Victorian fishing licence fees.

The network offers opportunities to build connections in the industry through major events and through the development of the WIRF Locals program, which includes more than 300 women participating in regular skills-based sessions to build their fishing knowledge.

THE International World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative.

On March 3, churches and venues across the world held one of the World Day of Prayer (WDP) services, compiled this year by the women of Taiwan.

The Nagambie Connect Faith Community (UC Church) hosted the local service at the Nagambie tennis clubrooms.

Those who attended were aware that the one in Nagambie was held along with 250 churches doing the same on March 3 just within Victoria alone.

This year the women of Taiwan WDP committee, made up of women from member churches in the small country of 100 islands that lies between Japan and the Philippines.

The theme for this year’s World Day of Prayer was “I have heard about your faith.”

GREAT OCEAN ROAD TRIPS: In 1986 I organised an Avenel Youth Group trip to Apollo Bay to stay with their youth group there for a weekend. Then also my family went to see the 12 Apostles and London Bridge sandstone formations on the Great Ocean Road.

Recently, John and I, my son Matthew and wife Vanesa stayed at the Bellbrae Country Club near Torquay and visited the iconic attractions again; only 8 Apostles now.

It was very interesting to see the beaches along the Surf Coast and Torquay where my dad played golf in the 1950s.

But the history of the building of the Great Ocean Road over 13 years to make it the longest War Memorial in the world was interest-

North Violet Town was a buzz of activity for the town garage sale on the weekend with six sites attracting plenty of traffic and visitors to town.

Cowslip Street was also busy and the idea of having people sell their things outside Community House was great - as Gary said ‘it was a 60-litre of milk day at the VT Café’.

Victorian roads still a mess: MP

Probus learns all about State Emergency Service’s Euroa unit GUEST speaker for the February meeting of Euroa Probus was Georgie Cardillo from the Euroa SES Unit.

Georgie has been an active member of the SES for 11 years, joining as a youth member and said “she just loves it.”

She outlined that Euroa’s SES unit is small with about 50 members, 20 still active.

“Volunteers do various work, including manning Driver Revival Vans supplying tea or coffee to travellers, help clear fallen trees due to storms - most trees that fall are green,” she said.

The unit also manages logistics, traffic management at incident sites, help with casualty removal of victims at accidents, control of flood rescues, landslides (mainly in Strathbogie), provide food and drinks to the CFA during large bushfires and work with other agencies that require help.

Georgie said the October (2022) floods were 1.5 metres higher than predicted.

“Newer residents are probably not aware of flooding events,” she said.

“Newer homes are now being built up above known flood levels or should be.”

Probus Club president, Fred Jungwirth opened the February meeting, held on Monday, 29th welcoming members and in introducing George spoke briefly about her background and the SES.

There will be no guest speaker, instead there will be a museum display of Euroa in the early days.

VICTORIAN roads remain in a dire condition as state government funding for post-flood reconstruction begins to peter out and local roads are ignored altogether, according to Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland.

Ms Cleeland believes the Andrews Labor Government must urgently inject additional funds to fix Victoria’s dilapidated road network as years of budget cuts, waste and last year’s floods take their toll.

Recent media reports indicate that $130 million has already been spent of $165 million allocated by the Labor Government last October for repairs of flood affected roads around the state.

The Victorian Transport Association estimates $1 billion is needed for post-flood reconstruction and repair work.

Meanwhile, the state government has not allocated a single cent to help local councils with the repair of local roads - the roads that take Victorians home and to work, school and shopping.

The Municipal Association of Victoria says local roads and bridges were already in a “dire straits” before the floods, as everyone except Labor MPs seems to acknowledge.

“The money announced so far by the government is a drop in the ocean

and doesn’t go anywhere near enough to fix our roads,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Labor is kidding itself if it thinks the poor state of our roads is the result of last year’s floods - the crisis has been building since Labor’s first cut to the road maintenance budget way back in 2015.

“Our arterial roads are still in need of significant work, while local councils are buckling under the weight of the roads maintenance backlog they’re facing, especially in rural and flood-affected areas.

“Labor needs to immediately announce more funding to net our roads fixed and reverse its $215 million budget cut from the last two years.

“Our roads can’t wait till the budget in May, this needs to happen now.”

Ms Cleeland said the MAV’s pre-budget submission calls for a minimum $320 million program to support council’s in fixing local roads.

“After axing the Country Roads and Bridges program when it came to government, Labor has presided over an ever-deteriorating roads network, while wasting $30 billion of taxpayers’ money on cost blow-outs on its megatransport projects,” she said.

“Just imagine what those funds could have done for our roads.”

Explorers Way tourist drive launch other points of interest in each town.

Roads less travelled have been used for the drive to highlight the beauty of the Shire, away from the freeways; roads with long arching tunnels of eucalypts, golden pastures with stands of ancient trees, wooden bridges and tree-lined creeks, with the blue of the ranges always in the distance.

Society secretary, Judy Macdonald, explained that “the Major Mitchell Bicentennial Trail was a popular get-away experience in the 1990s as people took a few days to travel throughout Victoria and experience tiny townships and areas not seen before.

“However the extensive brochure, available from every information centre on the route, and including field notes of Mitchell, was published by a Government

“The next edition was printed by another department but that also was discontinued.

“Consequently what was arguably the best tourist attraction to include so much of Victoria has fallen into disuse.

The new brochure is a simple foldout but remains true to the directions given in the original.

The theme of the 2023 Festival is shared stories and

the Society feels the earliest stories of Europeans in our district are those of these explorers, told from their journals. It is hoped that future grants can provide funds for interpretive panels at Mitchellstown, telling the story of the original communities, who were displaced by the consequences of successful exploration.

Two passionate speakers will be the highlight of the launch. THE Australian Heritage Festival 2023 is coming to a venue near you.

Tahbilk Winery has generously offered their Wetlands View Restaurant to host the launch of the Explorers Way tourist drive and brochure, a project of Nagambie Historical Society, in collaboration with the Strathbogie Shire.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 18, at 11am to 2pm.

This is also International Monuments and Sites Day. The Explorers Way revives the Major Mitchell Bicentennial Trail through the Shire, from Mitchellstown to Violet Town.

It then travels, in reverse, the tracks of Hume and Hovell, returning through Euroa and Longwood to Avenel.

The drive visits every cairn and memorial to the explorers in those areas, and the map brochure details

Praying for Women of Taiwan

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THIS year’s World Day of Prayer focused on the plight of women in Taiwan - titled the ‘Hidden Women of Taiwan’.

A service was held at the Euroa Baptist Church last Friday with about 20 people attending.

Speaker for the service was Retired Baptist Minister, Bob Bruce with his wife, Coral accompanying the hymns on piano.

The Hidden Women of Taiwan is all about how women often do not have choices to make - or when they do make those choices it reflects on their lifestyle for the remainder of their lives.

Gender equality plays a big part in their decisions with many choosing to stay single, some choose not to have children, and more than half a million choose to move to another country.

Half of Taiwan’s women have also chosen Christianity as their religion.

Following World War II many Chinese immigrated to Taiwan raising that country’s population to around 95 percent being of that nationality.

Today marriage to Taiwanese men is bringing significant numbers of immigrants

from across South-East Asia.

Taiwanese Mandarin (Hokkien) is the main language spoken throughout Taiwan; is used in schools and is the main language of younger people.

Taiwan was once a part of China but broke off from mainland China in 1895 when Japan took over control.

It became an independent country following WWII when Japan lost the war.

More recent events in the country’s history include Presidential advocacy for women’s rites; successful management of COVID19,helping other countries and using the motto: “Taiwan can help’.

Worldwide celebrating World Day of Prayer, the Christian women of Taiwan shared their experiences with Christian communities around the world.

The women of Taiwan wished everyone ‘Ping-an’ ‘May God grant you peace - a peaceful relationship with God and with one another’.

Euroa Baptist Church Deacon, Sue Pickett said in Australia we should support women all over the world that do not have the opportunities we have.

“We should make our residents aware of other cultures, raise awareness of

BUSINESS HOUSE BOWLS: The six night sessions for the Business House Bowls finished last Wednesday when the winners of the season were announced.

Moore Builders finished on top of the ladder with 42 points with four teams - Healers, Lindsay Park, Lions, Castle Creek all on 40 points - close seconds.

Thanks to all who supported this series over the past six weeks and hop all who played in the different teams enjoyed themselves as they have done in the past.

VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB VIOLET Town Bowls travelled to Hilltop to play Rushworth on Saturday in the pennant semi-finals.

As the Hilltop greens are reputed to be fast paced, the new bowlers had been advised to practice short ends to control the length when rolling both the jack and their bowls.

The overall score was tied all the way along.

However, the end result was a loss, 32-35, so with the second chance the team travels to Nagambie to play third placed Eildon who beat Avenel.

We were a little late in starting as the causeway traffic added 30 minutes to their anticipated travelling time.

The course, as always, was in excellent condition and the weather exceptionally fine moving from 18 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees throughout the day.

The championship is decided on the aggregate of the best 40 stableford scores from each team and Central compiled 1284 points, just ahead of the GV total of 1275.

This means that Central District retains the shield and now leads the competition seven wins to six, and with one drawn contest.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 135 metre elevated twelfth hole in three equal grades; A-grade 0-16, Peter Mazur, CD-Bendigo; B-grade 17-21, Jim Dean, GVHill Top; and C-grade 22-36, Danny Curran, CD-Axedale.

Next year Central District will be the host, at a venue still to be determined.

By AUDREY McINTOSH EUROA’S division two team travelled to Stanhope to play in the first elimination final of the Goulburn Murray league pennant on Saturday.

They played against Shepparton Park and came home the victors 90/87.

All the best for this Saturday’s next round.

Division two 90/87: S Drysdale (s), B Jennings, J Greasely, J Groot and V Page won their rink 25/18.

K Sutcliffe (s), M Stevens, D Steers, B Sargood and R Thorpe lost by the narrowest of margins (1 shot) 20/21.

A Houston (s), J Watters, N Noon, K Kruse and H Matthews also had a loss 20/24.

Division Four also played in a final at Mooroopna against Tatura Hilltop and lost this match 84/91.

K Milner (s), j Perry, G Blatchford, M Cerini and P Wallis won their rink 26/18.

B McConachie (s), R Noble, L Fisher , A Sutcliff and K Cornell drew their match 22/22.

Due to illness of one of the members from this side, the teams played well with their new members.

The club is sorry to heart of the illness of members Nev Harris, Brian Duffey, Lindsay and Sandra Cocking and wish them all a speedy recovery.

MIDWEEK BOWLS: The first of the finals of the Midweek Pennant were played last Tuesday (February 28) and Euroa had only one side make the finals, they being division five who have had a successful year finishing second on the ladder in that division.

The side played Shepparton Park and were beaten 30/42 and will now play in a second chance playing against Avenel to see which side makes the final - good luck to these bowlers.

BOWLS GV VETERANS GOLF SHEPPARTON Golf Club hosted the annual challenge with Central District (Bendigo based) Veteran Golfers Association to contest for the Tom Downie Shield, on Monday.

Tom was a member of both associations at different times and contributed much to the competition and collegiality of both before his passing in 2012.

Tennis finishes on high note

By MARK BORTHWICK THE grand finals were held at Benalla Lawn this year with Euroa featuring in three out of the four events.

In A division, St Paul’s, led by Jake Hill, did not get to play as Strathbogie could only field a team utilising an unqualified player which meant forfeiting three sets.

They elected not to play, so the cup went to St Paul’s.

Division 2 was won by Michelle Thomson on a handicap of 26 and also scored 37 points.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB LAST Saturday, March 4 saw the stoke and monthly medal being played .

It was a perfect day for golf and thank you to the volunteers for preparing the course.

Saturday’s winner with a score of nett 68 was Ria Pearce.

The Men’s winner was Grant Pearce with a nett 70, who now qualifies for the monthly medal play-offs as Ria had already qualified last month.

Line balls were won by Phil Fry with a nett 71, Shae Van Der Schoor with a nett 72 and Jack McDonald with a nett 72.

Good to see Jack back on the course again.

Caroline, along with Rosie Cameron, Kelly Hill, Jim Gall, Phil Mollison, Jason Goss, and Greg Rowe all made contributions on the day to secure a fabulous win by 20 games.

In the repecharge final between Chris Ellis’s Gooram and Benalla Lawn, Gooram was won by Eleanor Barns, nice to see her back playing golf too.

NAGAMBIE WOMEN’S GOLF THERE were 11 players for a round of 4BBB Aggregate for the Nagambie Ladies golfers last week.

The winners of the 18 holes were Bev Brown and Karyn Thompson with 67 points on a countback from Sue Verge and Irene Keogh.

The 9-hole winners were Verge and Keogh with 33 pts.

NAGAMBIE MEN’S GOLF THE March monthly medal brought out the best in the big field with four players producing scores of net 70 or better.

But it was Ben Cassar with the stand out round of the day going low with a 7914-65, shooting two birdies in his opening nine holes, this then set Cassar up for a big finish a red hot putter helped provide the winning result with playing partners saying he could not miss when on the greens. Runner up was Murchison golfer Bob McAdam playing some smart golf with a 96-28-68.

McAdam worked the ball beautifully around the course , third place went to ‘the wild thing’ Rhys Shepherd with the local crowd pleaser carding a respectable 92-24-69.

The nearest the pin prizes went to David Sudholz with a ripper on the 3rd, Greg Whiteman finding form on the 8th, Lindsay Hall caressing one to the 13th and Rhys Shepherd controlling it at the 16th.

This week’s golf will be a Stableford event with D. Love on office duty and J Lodding in the bar.

The juniors capped off a great season with a high quality final with the Barty Party (Joel Hammill, Avie Hill, Lara Saxon and Tully Watson) defeating The Djokers (Will and Sissy Grant, Darby Hoare and Daisy Cameron).

After brief celebrations, the Euroa teams and members are all combining to deliver their best efforts for this week’s Labour Day Tournament.

With record entries and a massive amount of work to prepare 14 courts on the Friendlies oval, this year shapes up to be our best tournament.

Singles commence at 8.30am Saturday with doubles Sunday and mixed on Monday, along with the open finals usually played mid-afternoon.

With plenty of food and beverage options, it will be a great weekend to spectate down at the club.

Father and daughter take out medals THE Nagambie Lake and swim club recently held its annual swimming competitions which saw young Kadey Macklin of Euroa take out a first place in the under

18 competition.

Kadey has been swimming for some years now and competing regularly but was thrilled to take home a gold medal for her efforts.

Joining her in the swimming competitions was her dad - John Macklin Jnr - who for the first time competed in such an event, however still managed to come in with a silver medal.

McMartin snaps shootout

By RICHARD JOHNSON TWILIGHT shoot out closed the summer season last Friday.

Ten players teed up for the final of the Kinross Farm Euroa Hotel sponsored twilight shoot out event.

One player is eliminated on each hole leaving two to go head to head on the 18th.

First to go was Gaz Ritchie, who started as favourite with a big price on him in the Calcutta, over the next eight holes Laurie McMartin, who gave the field a big start off his handicap of two, survived three putt offs and one chip off to be alive at the last.

Marcus Steers was the last eliminated in a putt off on the 17th leaving Melissa Eddy to go up against Laurie McMartin on the 18th.

They played it six times before Laurie’s par put gave him the win after five tension filled playoffs on the par 3 18th.

This event is growing year on year and is a fun way to close out the twilight season.

Very generous sponsorship from Kinross Farms and the Euroa Hotel.

No sooner than the summer season closed on Friday until Life Member Keith Seeber was called upon to make the opening putt for the 2023 season which he drilled in true Seeber fashion.

The season then got away with a three person Ambrose event competed for by 18 teams.

Euroa basketballers use tournament as lead-in to championships

By MATT GREEN EUROA Basketball Association’s four representative teams took to the courts as part of the Benalla Basketball Association’s 2023 Junior Tournament last month.

With games being played in Benalla, Wangaratta and Myrtleford during the tournament, the teams were spread across the region taking on teams from other local associations.

Euroa’s under 16 and 18 boys were looking to the Benalla tournament as good preparation for their upcoming Junior Country Championships which will be held in Traralgon later this month.

Both teams showed some glimpses of the form that they would like to take into champs with the under 16 boys reaching the semi-final of the tournament against Mansfield, and the under 18 boys playing off against season long rival Wangaratta in their semi-final clash.

While both teams fell at the semi-final stage, there is still time to refine their approach and achieve some positive results in Traralgon.

With 15 teams entered in the age group, Euroa’s under 14 boys team faced some tough competition over the weekend and needed to finish in the top

half of the group to play finals.

The boys started with a win against Wangaratta and a close loss to Benalla in their first two games before facing eventual tournament winners Wodonga in their third game.

With a loss to Wodonga they needed some results from other games to go their way and just missed out on making it through to the finals of their group.

Euroa’s under 12 boys, playing in only their second tournament also found themselves in a large group and battled it out against teams who were much more experienced than the youngest Junior Magpie squad.

The team should be extremely proud of themselves for the way they conducted themselves over the weekend and this approach will see them continue to develop and come together as a team that will challenge teams from much larger associations in the seasons to come.

Season ends for Euroa C grade

By JACK WILSON ON Saturday, Euroa C grade hosted Mooroopna at the Friendlies in ideal conditions for cricket.

Captain Lucas Paul won the toss and chose to bat first on a wicket that looked like plenty of runs would be scored on.

Mitch Gleeson and Dave McCullough opened the batting for the home team and put on a 38run partnership with the ball being tonked to the boundary at regular intervals, that was until McCullough was trapped in front for a well-made 17.

Fletcher Paul came in to bat next and with Gleeson, the pair made 46 for the second wicket before

Gleeson was caught behind for 30.

Lucas Paul joined his son Fletcher at the crease and took Euroa to the drinks break at 2-103.

After drinks, Euroa went on with the mission to set a defendable score.

A 58-run partnership was broken when Lucas Paul was bowled for 20.

Carl Norton came in and took the score to 164 until he was dismissed which triggered a middle order collapse with Euroa losing 5-12.

Russell Downie and Jack Walters survived the last 10 balls with a 24-run blast mainly off the bat of Walters with 16 run cameo off 6 balls.

Euroa set Mooroopna

a target of 201 runs of 40 overs.

The run chase started off with Mooroopna getting through nine overs before Jack Walters breaking through with the first wicket by trapping their opening batter lbw with the score at 1-72 in the 10th over.

The next over, Russell Downie got in the wickets column with the ball hitting the number three batter for Mooroopna leg before.

A 71-run partnership was broken with Fletcher Paul running out the batter after a mix up trying to run a third.

Another big partnership was broken with Lucas Paul dismissing the visitors captain with the ball being

caught by his son at cover.

Jack Wilson entered the wicket taking action with Mooroopna batter hitting the ball into the deep to be caught on 95 by Ben Jones at deep mid-wicket, then two balls later got another wicket with Lucas Paul taking a clean catch at first slip.

Mooroopna got the runs with three overs to spare to end Euroa’s season with a loss.

C grade would like to thank everyone who helped this season with scoring or umpiring etc throughout the season.
