Health funding plea DISCUSSIONS regarding the ongoing viability and future funding model for Euroa Health’s Acute Hospital have commenced ahead of the 2022 State Election.

Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter and the board of management have led the way on these conversations, making a plea to the government for help to keep the hospital running.

Hospital is owned by the community, classifying it as a private hospital because it is a registered charity.

This means, the Euroa Acute Hospital is not eligible for any State Government funding like public hospitals receive annually, however, this has not stopped the acute hospital from

welcoming patients from the community if they do not have private health insurance.

Euroa Acute Hospital does obtain funding for their ‘public beds’ but the reality is that Euroa Acute Hospital only received $205,935 of funding from the Victorian Government to support the local hospital in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

“Neighbouring public hospitals in Alexandra and Mansfield received

$8,024,000 and $13,012,000 respectively, which is a hard reality to understand and grasp,” Mr Siede said.

While all three hospitals provide similar services in supporting their local communities, and are also quite similar in size (Euroa 22 beds; Alexandra 25 beds and Mansfield 24 beds), the funding gap is significant.

According to their 20202021 Annual Report, even the much smaller hospital at

Rochester/Elmore with only 10 beds received $7,593,000.

When broken down to funding ‘per bed’, the funding differences are made more apparent.

• Alexandra hospital, with 25 acute beds, received $320,960 per bed.

• Kerang, with 20 beds, received $433,790 per bed.

• Mansfield, with 24 beds, received $542,167 per bed.

• Rochester/Elmore, with 10 beds, received $759,300.

Building region’s jobs and skills

By SHANE DOUTHIE ONE of the key outcomes of the federal Jobs and Skills Summit for Indi independent MP Helen Haines, is a bigger focus on regional areas.

Dr Haines was one of three crossbench MPs who attended the summit on Thursday, a day where much of the focus was on under participation in the workforce.

She said the summit identified three groups who were held back from participating as much as they would have preferred due to structural issues.

“Women are often prevented from working more hours due to the availability and lack of flexibility of childcare,” Dr Haines said.

“People with a disability can be prevented from taking up employment due to workplaces not being set-up to properly cater for them and often due to employees’ attitudes towards them.

“Pensioners who wish to work to boost their income are often prevented due to the income affecting their pension.”

While Dr Haines said not every issue raised at the summit could possibly be solved in two days, there were already some key announcements being made

means I’m not the only one saying it.

“What are the tech skills needed to make that happen?.

“We need to make sure the skills of the future are being offered at TAFEs, the

tech skills to go with that renewable energy push.

“I spoke to Brendan O’Connor (Minister for Skills and Training) about how we need to invest in infrastructure so apprentices aren’t training on combustion

engines when they need to work on electric vehicles.

“He agreed to come down to Indi and have a look and I will be working with his office and GOTAFE to make that happen.”

Dr Haines said those who declined to participate at the summit missed a major opportunity to advocate for their cause, whether it was their electorate, or business, or community.

“If you don’t show up you don’t get a say, or have the chance to interact with people,” she said.

“I met some young innovators in technology, which could benefit agriculture and spoke to them about how we can make that happen on farms in my patch; the same with Fiona Simpson, president of the National Farmers Federation.”

Dr Haines said there was widespread agreement on a number of key issues on the day with people offering ideas and discussing them, as opposed to the confrontationist approach over the last decade or so.

“We’ve just fought about things, important things and haven’t achieved what we should have,” she said.

“This is a very different approach.”

Have your say on draft tree management plan STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is seeking community input into its draft tree management plan, which is now out for consultation.

The draft plan provides the framework for the maintenance, renewal and risk management of all tree assets growing on council owned and managed land.

This includes trees within designated roads and other reserves in Strathbogie Shire.

“Council’s green infrastructure - which includes our trees, are highly valued by our community and contribute greatly to the amenity of the built environment within our Shire,” Deputy Mayor Paul Murray said.

“Trees enhance liveability, landscape character and biodiversity.

“Trees are also widely recognised for their contribution to reducing the impacts of climate change, improving water conservation and for their shade which can significantly reduce daytime temperatures.”

Mayor Laura Binks said it was acknowledged that despite their benefits, the presence of trees in public areas could create a degree of risk to people, property and services through loss of limbs or total tree failure.

Council’s draft tree management plan documents the management strategies that council has in place to ensure the longevity and quality of trees within the shire’s urban environments, as well as the risk management framework that will be applied to mitigate risk to the community as much as is reasonable and practicable.

Inspection intervals and response times are identified as

part of council’s risk management framework, which includes: • a robust risk rating framework and methodology for tree assessment and hazards which then link into maintenance and inspection programs; • maintenance scheduling; and • inspection timeframes and requirements, including a rolling five-year program of regular condition and hazards inspections.

“We are responsible for more than 15,000 trees throughout on municipality on Council managed roads, streets, parks and open spaces,” Cr Murray said.

“This includes local roads designated under the Road Management Act 2004.

“It is also council’s responsibility under Section 43 of the Country Fire Authority Act 1958 to ‘take all practicable steps to prevent the occurrence of fires on, and minimise the danger of the spread of fires, on any road under its care and management’.”

The draft plan does not cover trees within Environmental Significance, Vegetation Protection and Heritage Overlays - these are administered by the council’s planning department.

A copy of the draft tree management plan can be viewed online or at any of council’s customer service centres in Euroa and Nagambie.

New vehicle to help locals get their licence DRIVERS and mentors taking part in the TAC L2P Program in Strathbogie Shire will enjoy taking a new vehicle on lessons.

The program, facilitated by Berry Street, supports young learner drivers with poor access to vehicles and mentor drivers.

Strathbogie Shire Council Acting Mayor Paul Murray said it was fantastic young drivers would get to enjoy the features of a new vehicle.

“We have seen young drivers grow and become confident to get their P-plates

thanks to the TAC L2P Program,” Cr Murray said.

“Not only will the new vehicle allow the mentors and drivers to be comfortable with new features, but there are also always enhanced safety functions that come with any new model of vehicle.”

Cr Murray encouraged experienced drivers who wished to become mentors to visit the L2P Program website to find out more.

“Mentors only need to commit one to two hours each week to help a young learner driver complete their 120

hours of driving experience required to apply for a licence,” he said.

“The program matches young local drivers aged 16-21 years without access to a supervising driver or a car with a volunteer trained mentor.”

Mentors are provided with training in the latest road safety practices before being matched with learner drivers.

“The L2P Program is not only a fantastic way of improving road safety but it also empowers our younger people as a drivers licence can lead to further education

opportunities, employment, independence and a sense of achievement,” Berry Street L2P Program senior coordinator Jenni Bowles said.

“We are always looking for both mentors and learners to take on the program.

“Learners will receive professional lessons as well as drives with their mentor to assist them to gain their licence, a great way to enjoy driving with a new car as well.”

Boost For Goulburn Broken environment THE State Labor Government is supporting environmental projects in the Goulburn Broken catchment with a funding boost set to improve water quality and biodiversity in the region.

Minister for Water Harriet Shing last week announced that six innovative pilot projects will share in $160,100 as part of the ‘Our Catchments, Our Communities’ program.

“The Goulburn Broken Catchment is an important place, and we want to ensure it continues to benefit regional economies by offering recreational activities and supporting native flora and fauna,” Ms Shing said.

“We’re proud to be supporting these local projects which will tackle some high priority issues and provide real on-the-ground benefits.”

From reintroducing the Growling Grass Frog through captive breeding to sampling water to assess fish populations, the projects will improve and enhance the catchment for future generations.

The successful projects include: • $30,000 for Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network to reduce the impacts of climate change in the ranges by collecting and sharing environmental information online.

• $30,000 for Taungurung Land and Waters Council to build relationships with the Molesworth community and adjoining landholders to heal Country and undertake invasive weeding works.

• $30,000 for BehaviourWorks Australia, Monash Sustainable Development Institute, Monash University to conduct research and survey farmers and industry about climate change awareness and better land management practices.

• $26,700 for Water Stewardship Australia to develop a network of local businesses in partnership with Strathbogie Shire Council to improve water outcomes by undertaking an audit of water use and needs, identify areas for improvement and marketing opportunities for water stewards.

• $24,400 for Threatened

Species Conservancy to test a new monitoring method that uses DNA to assess fish populations. If successful, the new tool could enable managers and community groups to regularly evaluate fish stocks by collecting a cup of water and sending the sample to the lab for testing.

• $19,000 for Winton Wetlands Committee of Management to enhance captive breeding for the reintroduction of Growling Grass Frogs to the Goulburn Broken Catchment.

The grants are also part of the implementation of the Goulburn Broken Regional Catchment Strategy and the Hume Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, which both identify ways to improve and enhance the catchment and address the impacts of climate change.

The State Government has invested $21.75 million towards the Our Catchments, Our Communities program, which aims to help the management of catchments in ways that benefit the environment, community and the economy.

LOCAL LIBRARIES TO BENEFIT: A State Government initiative will see funding delivered to local council’s to further invest in their libraries.

$141,985 investment made into Strathbogie Shire libraries COUNCILS across northern Victoria will receive a valuable investment in the future of their local libraries, thanks to a State Government Public Libraries Funding Program.

• $141,985 is being invested into Strathbogie Shire’s public libraries.

• $342,825 is being invested into Mitchell Shire’s public libraries.

• A further $895,330 is being invested into the Goulburn Valley Regional Library Corporation.

This includes libraries in towns such as Euroa, Nagambie and Violet Town.

The Public Libraries Funding Program provides annual funding for public libraries across Victoria so that they can provide valuable library services.

This funding is expected

to expand library collections, boost online services and provide library and outreach programs.

“We are proud to continue to support our councils and regional library corporations to deliver high-quality resources for our community through the Public Libraries Funding Program,” Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.

“As our community grows, so do their needs.

“This funding will provide Northern Victorians to have improved access to digital technology and resources, literacy support services, traditional collections, event spaces and workstations.”

The Public Libraries Funding Program has been allocated $48.1 million in funding for the 2022-2023 financial year.

Since 2015, more than $354 million has been invested through the Public Libraries Funding Program.

“We’re supporting learning and education, and this funding will ensure that libraries can continue to provide accessible and engaging resources to communities across Victoria through the Public Library Funding Program,” Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne said.

Local libraries are muchloved community facilities in Victoria.

Across the state, more than two million library members borrow more than 31 million items from libraries every year.

Euroa roads among worst: Nats’ survey

Emergency services preparing for high-risk weather season

ROADS across the Euroa electorate are among the worst in the state, according to thousands of Victorian drivers.

The Heathcote-Nagambie Rd has claimed a top 10 position in a statewide poll on Victoria’s worst roads.

Shadow Roads Minister Danny O’Brien was in Heathcote to announce the result alongside Member for Euroa Steph Ryan and The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland.

Ms Cleeland demanded urgent investment to improve the state of local roads across the entire region.

“Our region is simply not getting a fair share of investment at the moment, which is evident in our crumbling road network,” Ms Cleeland said.

“This is a reflection of Labor’s priorities.

“If I am elected in November, I will fight for additional funding to improve our road network.

“Instead of spending money on more yellow signs to warn us of dangerous and disintegrating roads, the Andrews Government needs to spend money to fix the problem.

“We are even seeing potholes appearing in our major freeways like the Hume and

VICTORIA’S emergency management sector continues to prepare for the higher risk weather season and residents are being urged to start actively preparing too.

While it has been cold and wet in some parts of the state, it is time for individuals, families and communities to start thinking about preparedness - for fires, floods and storms - ahead of spring and summer.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast above median rainfall through spring, with the period September to November likely to be above median for the northern part of Victoria.

Emergency services are reminding communities to prepare for these conditions now, and to understand your local risk as we prepare for a wet spring.

“The outlook suggests Victoria will have a wet start to spring and it’s important Victorians begin to plan for floods and storms, in the same way they prepare for potential fires,” emergency management commissioner Andrew Crisp said.

“We’re also asking communities to have a plan in place,” Victoria State Emergency Service chief officer Tim Wiebusch said.

REGIONAL ROADS NEED REPAIR: Shadow Minister for Roads Danny O’Brien and Annabelle Cleeland on the crumbling Heathcote-Nagambie Road, recently voted as one of the 10 worst roads in the state. the Goulburn Valley freeways.

“Only a change of government in November will see roads in our region receive attention.”

Mr O’Brien said the current state of regional roads was unacceptable.

“There are some incredibly dangerous stretches of the Heathcote-Nagambie Road that need urgent attention,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Country roads like this are plagued by rough surface signs and speed limits, which are a symptom of years of neglect.

“I will be raising the state of this road directly with the Roads Minister and requesting urgent action to upgrade

the crumbling shoulders that pose a real hazard to road users.

“We shouldn’t have to wait for a change of government for safe country roads.”

Mr O’Brien said the Andrews Government’s priorities were clear.

“They’d rather spend $200 billion on a rail loop in Melbourne that doesn’t stack up than invest in the safety of regional Victorians,” Mr O’Brien said.

The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for spring, released last week indicates varying fire risk across Victoria.

Forests in the Wimmera and south-west may become drier with the forecast of higher-than-average day and night temperatures, potentially increasing the fire risk in those areas.

“CFA and its partner agencies are doing everything we can to keep every Victorian safe this fire season, however we ask Victorians to help us by preparing their properties and heeding our advice,” Country Fire Authority chief officer Jason Heffernan said.

for average fire season must be taken seriously and requires detailed preparation,” Forest Fire Management Victoria chief fire officer Chris Hardman said.

Victorians are also urged to ensure they understand the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System, which will be in place from 1 September across Australia.

The new system has four ratings - Moderate, High, Extreme and Catastrophic and means that no matter where you live in Victoria or travel across Australia, the same system will be in place.

REGIONAL environment groups in northeastern Victoria - Save Our Strathbogie Forest, Euroa Environment Group and Goulburn Valley Environment Group welcome the recent recommendation made by the Eminent Panel for Community Engagement’s (EPCE) for the future management of the Strathbogie Forest as a protected conservation area.

The groups particularly welcome the recommendation that these forests become protected under a new category of public land to be designated as a cultural reserve and managed primarily by the land’s traditional owners, the Taungurung people.

We congratulate the Victorian Government on its continuing commitment to self-determination of traditional owners and want to endorse how significant we consider this recommendation by the EPCE to be for the healing of culture, community and land for the Taungurung people if

adopted by government.

During the EPCE’s community consultation process, we initiated a change. org petition to gauge and encourage support for to custodianship among our supporter base.

More than 600 people, mostly our Victorian supporters, endorsed our call for to custodianship of the forest.

We firmly believe this is the right way forward and that history will judge it so.

We fully endorse the panel’s recommendations, which compliment the constructive groundwork the Victorian Government has undertaken towards treaty and self-determination in recent years.

Indigenous custodianship of public land in Victoria, such as the Strathbogie forest, is an exciting and visionary development in land management.

It is now nearly three years since the Andrews Government announced an end to native forest logging in the Strathbogie forests and their informal designation as ‘Immediate Protection Areas’ which were welcome but carry no

formal protection powers.

With the recommendations by the EPCE now setting a clear course for action in terms of both forest protection and land justice for the Taungurung people, we call on the Andrews Government to announce the establishment of the Strathbogie Forest Cultural Reserve as a priority action before the upcoming election.

By GUS RIDDER MEMBERS from the Longwood and Euroa Country Fire Authority (CFA) teams will be taking part in Saturday’s 9th Annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb.

The stair climb will have 600 Firefighters and other Emergency Service Personnel across the state stepping up to fight depression, PTSI and suicide by climbing the 28 floors of

Jake Davidson, Tyson Thomson, Bec Noye, Tyson Huggins and Aaron Rotherham have all been working hard in the lead up to the event, training every Monday with Coach Joey at Vaz Train.

Supporters not participating in the climb itself will still be able to take part by raising their usual step-count.

Virtual supporters are being asked to climb at least 3139 steps across the month to represent the 3139 Australians who lose their lives to Suicide each year.

Whether it is at your back steps, some stairs at the local park or even a milk crate in the lounge room, the firefighter climb is asking you to “step up”.

The climb aims to raise $600,000 for Lifeline, Fortem and the 000 Foundation, to im-

prove support services, fund research, remove stigmas and raise awareness of mental health issues like depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Injury and suicide, especially for those within the Emergency Service and Defence communities.

House prices putting squeeze on affordability EUROA’S skyrocketing house prices are creating a housing affordability crisis according to Nationals candidate Annabelle Cleeland.

The median price of a home in Euroa has grown by 58 per cent since the second quarter of 2020 to now be worth $459,000, data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria shows.

Ms Cleeland said urgent leadership was needed from the state government to ease the af-

fordability crisis.

“The incredible uplift in house prices is making it impossible for many to get into the property market,” Ms Cleeland said.

“While booming demand is great for home owners in our region, a lack of supply is also making rental properties more expensive, pushing more people to insecure housing.

“The Nationals have put real solutions on the table to ad-

dress the housing crisis we are facing.

“If elected to government we will fast track 50,000 new housing lots to market in regional Victoria to ease housing shortfalls across our communities.

“We will also implement a flying squad of planners who can travel regional Victoria to fast track developments which are being held up because councils are finding it difficult to recruit planners.

“This will mean more people can buy or build a home in their own community, instead of being forced to move away.”

Ms Cleeland said The Nationals’ Regional Infrastructure Guarantee would also be transformative.

“In government, The Nationals will demand 25 per cent of capital funding is spent in regional Victoria,” she said.

“That will be transformative for our region.”

MP invites minister to help veterans’ retreat MEMBER for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell has asked Victorian Veterans’ Minister Shaun Leane to visit Goorambat Veterans’ Retreat and hear what can be done to help this vital service.

The Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party Member issued the invitation in Parliament during a member’s statement.

“Last week I visited Goorambat Veterans’ Retreat which does really important work to help defence veterans back into everyday life and keep them safe,” Ms Maxwell said.

“It’s run by former army staff officer and veterans’ welfare advocate Phil Thompson, and Phil’s supported by his wife Jo, who runs an associated social enterprise called the Digger’s Wife Cafe.

“Since late 2019 a notfor-profit charity has been transforming Goorambat’s old primary school as a retreat for Australian Defence Force veterans and their families.

“It offers emergency accommodation and support for those challenged by leaving the ADF or facing personal hardship.

Jaclyn Symes MP discusses affirmative consent laws REFORMS to change the way sexual violence is dealt with in Victoria have passed Parliament.

The Justice Legislation Amendment (Sexual Offences and Other Matters) Bill 2022 includes amendments that will adopt an affirmative consent model and provide better protections for victim-survivors of sexual offences, shifting the scrutiny from victimsurvivors onto their perpetrators.

The model will make it clear that everyone has a responsibility to get consent before engaging in sexual activity.

For their belief in consent to be reasonable, a person must have taken steps by saying or doing something to find out if the other person consents - simply, it must be a clear and enthusiastic go-ahead.

This can include, but isn’t limited to verbally asking and getting a “yes”, a physical gesture like a nod or reciprocating a move such as removing clothes.

Even if a person meets this minimum requirement to take steps, their belief in consent must still be reasonable in all the circumstances - for example taking into consideration if the steps went far enough, or if there were cues such as

The reforms will also clarify that circumstances where there is no consent to an act, including the removal, non-use or tampering of a condom - commonly referred to as “stealthing” - without the other person’s consent is a crime.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes discussed the new laws.

“Victorians have made it clear there’s no room for victim-blaming and outdated attitudes around sexual violence - these new affirmative consent laws will ensure our justice system keeps up with those expectations,” she said.

“By making it crystal clear that stealthing is a crime, we’re not only con-

demning it but making it easier for victims to realise what’s happened to them and that it isn’t something to be ashamed of.”

The Bill also includes stronger laws to target image-based sexual abuse, which includes taking intimate videos of someone without their consent and distributing, or threatening to distribute, intimate images, including deepfake pornography.

It includes new jury directions to address misconceptions in sexual offence trials and reforms to better protect the confidential health information of sexual offence complainants.

These reforms will be supported by communitybased education delivered by local organisations and specialist services, announced in the Victorian Budget 2022/23.

They will start to come into effect from next month, with the affirmative consent model to be in place from July 2023 unless proclaimed earlier.

The State Government consulted extensively with victim-survivors to ensure that lived experience is at the centre of these reforms to build effective and longlasting change, as well as with the courts and other key stakeholders.

WITH wet weather and water storages nearing capacity, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) and the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) are encouraging communities to prepare themselves and their properties in the event of a flood.

Hume Dam and Dartmouth Dam are close to their full supply level, while Lake Buffalo, Lake Nillahcootie, Lake William Hovell, Newlyn Reservoir and Hepburns Lagoon are passing all passing flows downstream.

GMW is also currently assessing the need to commence releases from Lake Eildon to manage air space, with the storage is currently above 90 per cent capacity.

GMW Water Storage Services general manager Martina Cusack said it was important people are equipped for potential flooding.

“Above-average rainfall is expected in all catchments in northern Victoria and there is an increased chance of flooding,” Ms Cusack said.

“If you have a dam that can cause downstream damage should it fail, we encourage you to take some general precautions including inspecting and monitoring your dam, clearing spillways and outlet pipes to help pass flood water, and repairing any cracks and other defects.”

Nagambie station works welcome

By DIANE GRANT THE Victorian Government, V/Line, the Regional Rail Revival group and Victoria’s Big Build all can take credit for the foresight to upgrade some of Victoria’s country stations as part of the stages of upgrading the Shepparton Line.

Nagambie station was one of those fortunate one to have their platform extended to double its length, to cater for the new VLocity trains to begin in the near future and new platform lighting, CCTV cameras, bus interchange, another small shelter, a new concreted carpark, safety measures and landscaping.

There will be no toilet facilities, as it is their policy to not place them on unmanned stations anymore due to the threat of graffiti.

For months rail users to and from Nagambie have been travelling by bus if the lines major works have held the trains up, while level crossings or platform work was undertaken.

On Friday, a community celebration to commemorate improvements to the Nagambie station was held at the station.

A short formal proceeding was held with the delivery director for Regional Rail Revival Ben Henshall speaking on behalf of the three station upgrades delivered as part of Stage 2 of the Shepparton Line project.

He also discussed stage 3, and said when it starts it will increase services in and out of Nagambie.

Local police, CFA, ambulance, first responders, V/Line Officers, Regional Rail Revival staff, a couple of stalls and locals from community groups joined together for the family friendly event that offered free food and entertainment.

Young guitarist Tom Hammond provided light entertainment for those who enjoyed the morning in the spring sunshine.

The Nagambie Men’s Shed cooked up a snag for them all, Mr Sheppy an ice cream or two, Olivers coffee wagon a cuppa, and pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School and Nagambie Kindergarten enjoyed the children’s amusements that were available for them to have fun on.

They all received a souvenir water bottle and information stickers about the future projects of our railway system.

Euroa SES joins show and shine

By RAY READ. A MAJOR attraction featuring the Euroa branch of the Victoria State Emergency Services (SES), will include graphic demonstrations of car wreck rescues when it joins the displays at the Australian National Show and Shine.

An exhibition including two SES vehicles, an information booth and three sessions which will include volunteers attacking a “wrecked car” with cutters, spreaders and other rescue tools, will be on site at Foy Street on event day.

The SES presence this year comes as a result of Goulburn Murray Credit Union (GMCU), one of the major sponsors of the Euroa Show and Shine who had donated their display site to the SES. Georgie Cardillo, unit controller of the Euroa SES unit, said the SES is a volunteer-based organisation providing emergency assistance to minimise the impact of emergencies and strengthen the community’s capacity to plan respond and recover, when emergencies occur.

“We are unique as we provide multiple specialist services,’ Ms Cardillo said.

“As a result, our volunteers carry out the broadest suite of emergency response

mation about the activities of the SES and a range of historic equipment.

Information for any people interested in becoming an SES volunteer will be available.

Volunteers of all ages, professions and backgrounds

serve in both operational and administrative roles.

“Awesome” is a much over-used term in today’s social media, but the word accurately describes some of the vehicles and equipment that Euroa SES will have on show.

Don’t miss at least one of the three SES car wreck rescue demonstrations in Foy Street, scheduled for around 10.20am, 11.20 am and 12.20pm.

Meanwhile, the Euroa Acute Hospital, with 22 beds received just $9361 per bed.

Putting it into perspective, that is a gap between the Euroa Hospital and other rural public hospitals of an average of more than $460,000 per bed, per year, every year.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Euroa Acute Hospital entered into a Commonwealth Government Private Hospital Funding Agreement (PHFA) like all private hospitals to ensure that facilities would take patients with COVID. Now with the cessation of the funding for COVID in 2022-2023 and also a decline of war veterans and their widows resulting in less inpatients funded by veterans affairs, the budget for the Acute Hospital in 2022-2023 has transitioned into a significant deficit budget.

Their plea for government help and funding to continue the vital work long into the future is to provide Euroa and the surrounding communities the care they need locally.

As a community owned hospital, Euroa Acute Hospital can no longer afford to make annual losses year after year and need funding to survive.

Euroa Health is making calls for an enhanced service, with more staff and the utilisation of all of the 22 beds which will relieve pressures on surrounding overcrowded hospitals like Shepparton and Wangaratta.

This will enable Ambulance Services to stay local, where they need to stay to be responsive for the community, rather than heading out of town.

Euroa Health say government funding will also create more opportunities to support the local community with more allied health services, enhanced urgent care centre services, and more availability and bulk billing for x-ray.

In the coming weeks, Euroa Health will be seeking local support for their call for action, with public information sessions and signatures for a petition to be announced shortly.

(John 3:16) and purchased our forgiveness and eternal life. God loves mankind deeply amd will vanquish all evil because it separates us from His Heavenly Home just as muddy boots are not welcome or allowed to walk in over clean white floors!!

Jesus sometimes showed anger yet without sinning. (Ephes 4:26) If He wasn’t angry at wrong-doing, He wouldn’t be Good; His wrath is evidence of Gods’ Goodness. (Ps. 37, Mark 10:18, James 1;17, matt 7:11) Love requires Justice. (Luke 18:7-8) Jesus hates Sin_ not the sinner.

However, nothing unholy enters Heaven, therefore, all will be judged after Christs’ return. People will either choose to retain their worldly dark taint or be covered by the saving grace of the Son-Light, that ‘makes all things new’. (2 Cor.5:17) Through Adam, we’re born into carnal-natural life but spiritually dead. (1 Cor 2:14) When we repent and surrender fully to Jesus Christ, we become re-born spiritually and finally know the true things of God. (Ephes.2:1-10) There-fore, there’s no more wonderful day for individuals or in Heaven (Luke 15:7) We either walk ‘the narrow way’ with Gods’ guiding presence or remain on the broad path that leads to destruction and ultimate loss. (Matt.7:13) Gods’ great love for mankind is matched by His Judgment against evil. (John 3:16, Ps 7:11, John 6:36, Ephs 5:6) The Bible teachers about two Kingdoms and two cities. Man’s vs Gods’; Babylon vs Jerusalem; the worlds-view vs Gods’-view. We’re clearly living in prophesied end-times. (Matt 24) Aren’t you watching and wondering, why the world is disintegrating faster than ever?

Jesus must come soon to save mankind from ourselves. (1 John 3:16) However, “not all shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven (1 Cor.6:9); but those who’ve fully repented and received Jesus Christ by faith’. If you reject Him now, why would you want to be with Him in Heaven later?

One man of the two guilty criminals, (Luke 23:41-43) hanging on crosses, next to Jesus, asked for the Lords’ forgiveness and was promised Paradise that very day. The other sinner mocked Jesus right till the end.

Traditional bookbinding to be exhibited in Violet Town A LOCAL practitioner in the ancient art of traditional bookbinding will show-case the lost trade during an exhibition day being held at Violet Town Library.

Hosting the session will be bookbinder and restorer Chi Chi Wang who has offered to advise and assess people’s heirloom books and historic documents during her visit.

Ms Wang said she will answer questions about bookbinding, assess books in need of repair and provide advice on how to care and store books to ensure their safety.

“Traditional bookbinding is a specialised field where books are made and restored all by hand using the methods and techniques of the ancient artisans,” she said.

“Most bookbinding over the past few decades has changed to mechanic binding leaving traditional bookbinders scarce, which is why they are now classed as a lost trade.”

One of Ms Wang’s most recent projects has been the restoration of a family bible for local identity Margot Colson, who appreciated not having to send her precious book away to Sydney.

It has also now been placed in a special archival box to ensure its safety for the next 150 years.

“It gave me great satisfaction,” Ms Wang said.

“The 1850 bible contained the Hughes’ family history dating back six generations and it was Margot’s wish to pass it onto her son, Jeffrey and his family.”

She said the pages were old and in disarray with copious amounts of sticky tape holding the torn pages together.

“My work can be so rewarding,” she said.

“Saving such a historic document from certain ruin and collapse which sees many destined for the rubbish bin,” she said.

“Too many of our books, journals, family bibles and records are being discarded or left to rot when they can be saved for future generations and our collective history.

“My passion is to save these books before it is too late.”

Ms Wang’s company Traditional BookBinding (TBB)

will exhibit some rare bookbinding tools and old books at Violet Town Library.

In order to keep the history of many families and the history of our Australia, TBB will be providing free book care advice at the library, at the same time, if anyone’s family books or any books are in need of repair, the book restorers from TBB will be providing free book inspection service and quote at the exhibition.

If you are interested in creating your own book, TBB bookbinders would be happy to make your first project a lot easier by providing suitable suggestions.

Some materials will be on display at the library.

The exhibition will be held on Thursday, September 8 from 10am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3pm at the Violet Town Library on Cowslip Street.

Euroa Arboretum supports likeminded sustainability project T

he Euroa Arboretum is one of the several locations around the town that is expected to see significant benefit from the Greening Euroa project if commonwealth funding can be secured.

The campaign to receive funding for this community driven and innovative project continues as the Greening Euroa committee requires $3.8 million of federal and state governments’ grants for its implementation and construction.

The funds will allow wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water’s treatment plant to be upgraded from Class C to Class B and piped underground to storage tanks throughout town.

From here it will be available for pumping onto the many public ovals, schools and sports grounds in the community, irrigating public green spaces across Euroa during the summer months.

The cost-efficient and climate smart project is also expected to have a significant benefit on the aesthetics of the town’s public spaces.

The sustainable vision and ethos of the Euroa Arboretum align perfectly with the Greening Euroa project according to their project manager Cathy Olive.

“We’re all about sustainability,” she said.

“We’re very much about revegetation and encouraging people to learn more about their natural environment.

“We have bush kinder programs, school programs, community education all working to really connect people with their landscape and have some understanding of where they fit in the landscape.

“The project fits our ethos.”

The arboretum current-

ly uses water from their dam to ensure the entire grounds and nursery are maintained and growing.

“For us, we are always very conscious of the water supply from our big dam,” Ms Olive said.

“We have a two-year supply of 26 megalitres of water in the dam now.

“We use this water for the nursery and for the grounds with the seed production areas as well.” s Olive says the project can deliver tangible benefits for the Arboretum when it comes to increasing their capacity to store and utilise their water.

“We’re conscious that with climate change we need to be planning for a three-year period rather than two,” she said.

“We want to safeguard our business and particularly we want to make sure we can keep producing enough plants to be offsetting climate change as well.

“We will still have our main water from the dam for the nursery due to the class of the water.

“Out on the grounds and all our seed production areas are all under irrigation so the project will take a lot of pressure off.

“It should extend us for the three-year window, maybe even four years.

“It’s a safeguard and would be fantastic.”

Ms Olive, along with the arboretum’s committee president Shirley Saywell, have held discussions with other stakeholders in the Greening Euroa project.

“We’ve had conversations with Goulburn Valley Water,” Ms Olive said.

“We’re doing some soil tests and looking at if we need to blend the water.

“The water would be class B so there will be a four-hour window from when we irrigate to when we have people at the arboretum.

“We will give the whole town water security,” Ms Olive said.

“Having more green spaces will be a huge benefit.

“To come into the Arboretum and see it be lush, green and growing really lifts you.

“You can really see the difference from our volun-

teers when they come in and how much they benefit from having something green, thriving and flourishing.

“We should be recycling our water, it’s a no brainer.

“We need to move away from using potable water on our public spaces.

“We work closely with Taungurung Traditional Owners and they talk about the importance of ‘healthy country, healthy people’ and vice versa.

“The more we can do to make more sustainable outcomes the better.

“If we can have more spaces that are living and thriving like that around town, why wouldn’t we?”

The Euroa Gazette in the 1970s AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will continue to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks back at the biggest stories from the 1970s.

In this decade, we witness history in the Shire of Euroa as Lorna McBurney becomes the first woman elected to council in 1975.

This would set the tone for a region that now boasts women leaders at a council, state and federal level.

Shearing was a popular part of local life in the 1970s, with Euroa hosting the prestigious Golden Shears competition in 1975.

Three years earlier, local man Brian Morrison was hailed as “the hero of Euroa” after breaking two world shearing records in front of a crowd of 1500 people.

Some of the local area’s major developments were first discussed this decade, with a proposal for the Euroa Lawn Cemetery featuring in the January 26, 1977 edition of the newspaper.

The major development proposal and news story of the decade related to the Hume Highway bypass of Euroa and Balmattum in 1972.

This proposal resulted in the formation of a ‘Save Euroa Action Group’ and gathered significant attention

across the community until 1975.

Eventually, it was determined that it would be “20 years” before the bypass would be built through the region.

This was made clear when the bypass was eventually completed in 1992.

The special lift out supplement chronicling the region’s history through the pages of the newspaper will be released on October 19, 2022.

Euroa Garden Club returns SPRING has arrived and the gardens in Euroa are looking wonderful after the warm and rainy end to winter.

The spring bulbs are looking particularly pretty and the blossoms are bursting out from trees all over the town.

The Euroa Garden Club is resuming their monthly meetings after their winter break.

The first meeting will be on Friday, September 16 at 1.30 pm.

This meeting will be held in Carol Stevens’ lovely garden in Gobur Street, Euroa.

Jean Walters from Castle Creek Gardens will be the guest presenter and will talk about succulents. Succulents are enjoying great popularity with gardeners because of the variety available and success with growing.

Jean will bring a display of plants, pots and planter stands.

Anglican Bishop visits parish

By DIANE GRANT PART of the Diocese of Wangaratta’s Anglican Bishop Clarence Bester’s mission is to visit the parishes around the Diocese.

On Sunday, August 28 he visited the Parish Central Goulburn parish folk at Christ Church Seymour.

The parishioners from Avenel, Nagambie and Seymour welcomed him and his wife Michelle, and Reverend David Still to their Sunday service.

Bishop Clarence presided over the Eucharist with assistance by Rev’d David Still and parish priest Rev’d Richard Pennington and Sacristan Anne Foote.

The Bishop expressed caring for others in his sermon especially those who may feel isolated, left out, the quiet ones, or those who don’t make a lot of noise to be noticed.

EPA charges Benalla-based manufacturer over air pollution discharge of odour, dust, airborne particles and Oxides of Nitrogen from a Benalla particle board factory.

The company charged is Monsbent Pty Ltd (trading as D&R Henderson).

The charges allege that the company and its director committed

39 offences including that on various dates in May, June, July, August, September, October and November 2021 and April and June 2022, it breached the conditions of the licence it was issued by EPA. The breaches involved allegedly discharging or emitting nuisance

dust and/or nuisance airborne particles, odours and other substances beyond the boundaries of its premises located at 42 BenallaYarrawonga Rd Benalla, in a manner that was not permitted by that licence.

Taungurung workshops, live music, markets, snake man, wetland boat tours, picnicking and wine-tasting all available.

Avenel Market is back this Sunday, September 11 from 9am to 1pm in Jubilee Park.

Great stalls and live music as always.

Avenel Primary School is holding their “The Avenel Stampede” fundraiser on Saturday, October 8.

The event begins at 6:30pm, with country and western fun including: dancing with the Mason Boys, great prizes, bull riding competition, yabby racing, and delicious spread of food for $60 per person.

The event is 18+ at the Wine Shed of Fowles Wines on Lambing Gully Road.

Early bird tickets purchased before September 18 will be $50.

Avenel Tennis Club is looking to start up a junior competition again.

Brodie Miller brings medals back from State Championships

By DIANE GRANT TALENTED 11 year old athlete Brodie Miller from Nagambie Primary School has had success representing the School Sport Victoria Team Vic 10-12 Years Cross Country team in their Cross Country Championships held in Adelaide two weeks ago.

Brodie’s family went to South Australia to see him contest the Para 12 Year Olds Boys 2km Cross Country event on August 27, at the Oakbank Racecourse in SA. His cheer squad included his parents Emma and Matt, younger brother Jack, Grandparents Karen and Rick Miller, his Aunty Katie Miller, Uncle Jac Corboy, cousin Kai and his Aunty Ebony Anderson who drove with him to Adelaide for the three day major athletic event.

Brodie ran the track event in 10 minutes and 56 seconds, a personal best and time so strong that he was chosen to be in the relay race.

Brodie finished third winning a bronze medal in his individual race and then received a gold medal as a member of the Para team placing 1st.

His mother Emma Miller spoke about his mentor and school principal, Rob French and the impact he has had on Brodie.

“Without Mr French’s encouragement and mentoring, Brodie would not have been able to achieve his goals,” she said.

“I am so thankful to Mr French for his wonderful support to Brodie, and I know that without him Brodie would not have followed this path.

“I was so overwhelmed when Brodie won a place in the State School championships, and now, I am so proud of him and what he achieved in SA. “It was his personal best.

“We are incredibly proud of Brodie and can’t wait to see where his next chapter leads him.”

For two years Brodie and his school Principal Rob French exercised after school three days a week during the COVID pandemic around Nagambie.

Brodie improved greatly in his running time over the two years guided and encouraged by his mentor Mr French.

Mr French was extremely proud of Brodie.

Reserves go down in physical finals battle EFNC RESERVES FOOTBALL THE Euroa reserves team took to the ground against the strong Kyabram team who had lost only one game going into the final series, it was going to be a tough challenge for our reserves team.

The teams faced difficult conditions with a strong wind favouring the town end.

Euroa won the toss, having the use of the wind at their back for the first quarter.

Unfortunately, the Magpies were not able to capitalise on this opportunity to hit the scoreboard and place pressure on Kyabram.

The intensity of the opposition unbalanced our players who struggled with the tempo of finals football - not using the ball well, missing targets by hand and foot.

This resulted in the team going to the first quarter break with scores being Euroa 1.2.8. to Kyabram 1.3.9 The second quarter was going to be a test for our Reserves as the Kyabram team were quickly moving the ball into their forward line, placing much pressure on the defensive group.

Euroa were not able to get the ball out of the defensive area resulting in the Kyabram team scoring three goals in this quarter with Euroa not able to register a score.

Euroa made the error in not trying to take the ball out the defensive side of the ground which gave the opposition the opportunity to

Kyabram 4.5.29 The third quarter was going to be a challenge for our team but to their credit they took the game up to Kyabram, matching them at the contest making for more physical clashes from both sides.

Euroa started to win the ball at the stoppages, moving the ball into its forward line and converting with goals on the scoreboard.

This had turned into a very tough game of reserves finals football and the Magpies took up the challenge in the physical part of the game.

This allowed them to go into the

third quarter break with scores Euroa 5.4.34. Kyabram 4.6.30 It was going to be challenge for Euroa in the last quarter with Kyabram having the wind at their back.

From the start of the quarter the Euroa players worked hard to move the ball into their forward line, creating plenty of opportunities to score.

This was not to be though as the Magpies were struggling to convert.

Kyabram, on the other hand, were able to counter the Magpies play, moving the ball into their forward line with good use of the ball by foot.

As the last quarter went on the

Euroa players confidence grew but they were not able to hit the scoreboard.

The Magpies were well led by senior players Linc McKernan, Matt Ivill, Zac Gleeson and Craig Bamford with the younger brigade contributing.

As they reflect on the game, the writer feels that the team was overawed initially, taking time to adjust to finals football when the pace of the game is quicker.

Another area which hurt Euroa was at the stoppages around the ground - continually during the game the opposition were able to take the ball away from the stoppages.

Euroa must be better at matching it with the opposition and manning up in the - hopefully weeks to come.

This again will be a learning curve for the group as finals football at all levels are played at a faster tempo.

An elimination semi-final now awaits against Seymour at Kyabram Recreation Reserve at 12.35pm on Sunday.

Get across to Kyabram to support the team.

Euroa bowls season starts well

By AUDREY MCINTOSH IT is the start of the 2022/23 bowling season next Saturday, September 10 at 1pm, following the long winter’s layoff.

Although many members have been playing at neighboring clubs since the Euroa Club closed for the winter season and others went North to enjoy the better weather and lots of bowls, all have come back refreshed to start the season here as club members and members of the Goulburn Valley Group, continuing their friendships forged over many years.

The Euroa opening takes place at 1pm this Saturday and all are to wear uniform and please bring a plate of food to share for afternoon tea.

Midweek pennant starts off in a different way this season, with division three starting on Tuesday, September 27 and the remaining divisions on Tuesday, October 11.

Saturday pennant will start on Saturday, October 15, practice matches be listed in future notes.

Good wishes to all bowlers for the coming season and best of luck to all pennant players for the coming 2022/23 season.

Home and away winter tennis over

By RHONDA CARPENTER DESPITE the threat of thunderstorms, the rain held off for the engaging contest between Mansfield Black and Mansfield Red last Monday.

Black’s Jenny Bell and Anna Speirs were going game for game against Red’s Karyn Fraser and Carolyn Murray then found their range with baseline balls and varied pace to take the set eight-four.

Red’s Pat Howard and Jo O’Brien began well against Black’s Rhonda Carpenter and Di Bergelin, employed superior courtcraft and served out strongly to defeat them eight-five.

Only one game separated the teams. Karyn and Jo combined superbly racing away to a five-nil lead in their set against Anna and Rhonda who steadied and climbed back into the contest.

Seizing the momentum, the pair went on to take the set in a tiebreak.

GOLF VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB PENNANT NEWS WE are thrilled to announce we will field a weekend pennant team of eight players in the new season.

Our Opening Day will be Sunday Sept 11 at 1pm. $5 charge includes a raffle ticket, and a small plate of afternoon tea to share will be appreciated.

SOCIAL We’ve been trialing social carpet bowls , 7pm Monday nights, returning to the clubhouse after many years of the game being enjoyed elsewhere around town.

We are heating that it is much more enjoyable, and we’ll be getting some carpet to place under the mats as it’s been a nightmare watching the bowls take off on mats that have no underfelt.

Our Secretary Margaret Crawford has been hard at work finding grants for the club, we’ll soon have that new ride-on mower hard at work, and we have purchased a stronger push mower.

The old mower of 20+ years has seen better times.

Thank you to the Shire who have been very helpful and are assisting us with a few things, our kitchen being one, and to increase outside lighting that will make the club a safer place at night.

Many thanks to members and volunteers who have been assisting us with tidying the gardens and surrounds to their former glory.

Terip and Moglonemby were not so lucky when the rain stopped play at Terip and the contest couldn’t be completed.

Moglonemby players were happy to end their interrupted season with a chat and a cuppa.

Terip one-27 v Moglonemby one-17 partial washout (both teams awarded two PP and three sets each and the games completed).

Mansfield Blue v Benalla full washout (both teams awarded two PP and three sets each).

We would like to thank and congratulate Mansfield Blue, Moglonemby and Mansfield Red on their seasons; it hasn’t been easy so well done for getting through the season.

In the final ladder standings only five points separated first and fourth place.

Semi-finals to be played next week in Mansfield will be between Benalla and Euroa, and Terip and Mansfield Black.

Winners will progress through to the grand final.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE third and final round of the 2022 Nagambie golf club championships were run and won with Jeremy Ezard taking home his 10th title, luckily the sun shone and the wind and sunshine late in the week dried out the course enough for some quality golf to be played.

Ezard had a six shot lead going into the last round and extended that to 10 by the end to make it decade long unbeaten run in the championship.

The A grade net saw Shaun Bryant come from two shots back and win his second A grade and post the lowest three round net total of the championship 225, Bryant new found consistence and controlled play surprising all who have witnessed it.

B grade was won by David Love putting together three clinical rounds were few mistakes were made to not allow the opposition any chance, Love finished with a total of 229 and looks set for a return to the A grade ranks next year.

C grade had Rhys Shepherd and Michael Mensfeld level going into the last round with Mensfeld going to a two shot lead with three holes to play, this was eventually enough for him to walk away with the always thrilling C grade, congratulations ‘Manga’ and all our championship winners.

The stroke event on the day was comprehensively won by visiting golfer James Murphy from the Hidden Valley golf club Murphy’s 74-5-69 was the first time any golfer has managed to go under 70

The nearest the pins went to Michael Roberts whipping a slick iron onto the third, not sure if our next golfer has ever been mentioned in this paragraph before Hugh Lawrence hitting the eighth, David Love punished one up to the 13th and the

steady and stable Shaun Bryant banging it into the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be played on Saturday 10th September with a 9.00 to 9.30 hit off on office duty will be J. Ezard and in the bar S. Villenger.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB WE had four girls and four boys for junior golf on Saturday morning so we decided to have separate competitions.

The boys comp was won

by Rayden Hannigan with Kevin Traynor in second and Max Harding coming in third.

Our very first girls’ only comp was won by Cienna Hannigan (playing only her second game of golf )

with Abbey Eagles in second and Ruby Hanngian in third place.

Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza vouchers went to Rayden Hannigan for his drive and pitch on 17 and Tilly Eagles for some excellent strokeplay.

Next week we will begin our six hole junior club championships so hope to see all the kids there.

The third round of the Men’s Club Champs was played on Saturday in perfect spring conditions although the wind was a little brisk.

Shane and Hudson Black have been on fire lately and this week it was Shane’s turn.

He duly saluted with a personal best round of 86 off the stick which gave him 69 nett and a comfortable win of the daily comp.

Runner up was Jed Smith with a nett 71 and line balls went to Hudson Black net 73 and Dave Fullager net 76.

Hudson and Dave cleaned up the NTP’s on the 5th and 18th respectively with Dave knocking in the putt for birdie.

Drive & Pitch on seventh went to Scoota Donovan.

The club championships are a close contest in all but C grade where Hudson Black has a commanding 20 shot lead.

The Bernie Stevens B grade trophy has a new leader with Shane Black leaping into first place by four shots from Dale Smith, Shane isn’t available to play the last round so he’ll need to hope his three round total stands up to the test.

In the overall, Jed leads Scoota by a solitary stroke

on a best two of three rounds played but if he has to count that first round nightmare it will be a different story altogether.

Michelle Thomson and Robin Lied joined the ladies for a stableford round off the yellow tees and Lyn C collected the winner’s voucher with a handy 37 points.

Ball winners were Lyn and Robin by virtue of a countback from Dee Wright, both players scoring 34 points.

Unfortunately, the NTP ball remained with the club.

The course is in great condition at the moment and we thank our wonderful volunteers for giving up their time to make it happen.

A few reminders, firstly the final round of the Men’s Club Championships is on Saturday and with the competition being so close, it should be a great tussle for the respective honours - so come along and see who prevails.

Secondly, committee members are reminded of the September meeting on Wednesday the 14th September - usual place and time.

And finally, the ladies will be hosting the Mabel Vearing Silver Salver on Thursday, September 15.

District clubs are reminded to get their entries to Lyn by Tuesday, September 13.

It’s been a busy time for the club, so hopefully we get good numbers for the final major event for the season.

Violet Town netballers out of finals campaign KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN - A GRADE VIOLET Town know that they needed to get off to a strong start.

The match started goal for goal, both sides converting their centre passes but this didn’t last for very long.

Dookie’s defensive pressure forced Violet Town into a couple unforced errors and Dookie were able to get out to a five-goal lead at quarter time.

Violet Town worked hard in the second quarter to lift the defensive pressure on Dookie which did convert into some

intercepts, but Dookie were up for the challenge and were able to force Violet Town into some turnover also. Violet Town were able to win that quarter by one getting the margin back to four at half time.

Violet Town started the

third quarter well, getting the ball into the attacking end and giving the shooters more opportunities to score but the momentum quickly changed about five minutes into the quarter and Dookie started to punish Violet Town on the scoreboard with their

shooters not missing.

Dookie went into the last break 10 goals up.

Violet Town had lots of work to do to get themselves back in the game but unfortunately all the damage had been done in the third quarter and Dookie ran away with the win.

A top effort by the Violet Town girls who were in the game until the third quarter.

Violet Town’s best effort from an A grade side since being in the KDL so well done girls.

KDFNL footy, netball finals results NAGAMBIE FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB NAGAMBIE Football Netball Club had a tumultuous week on court with two netball teams playing off against Murchison Toolamba at Avenel recreation reserve for the chance to progress in the finals.

Nagambie under 17s were able to fight hard and come home victorious with a close 37 - 32 win, and B grade brought home the bacon as well with a 50 - 38 win.

Both teams will now progress to the next stage with B grade playing Merrigum at Girgarre on September 11 in preliminary final two, with under 17s and A grade also at Girgarre on September 11 in preliminary final two.

Nagambie senior footballers were bested by Lancaster 78 - 96 and will not be progressing further in their finals campaign.

AVENEL FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB AVENEL Football Netball Club fronted two quality netball sides for finals this week, with both teams unfortunately returning home unsuccessful.

The Avenel C grade and Under 17 netballers have played admirable seasons and will now turn their sights to next year.

The Avenel football seniors were also bested by Shepparton East in a 45 - 63 point match.

Avenel’s reserves side will play Stanhope on Saturday, September 10 in the preliminary final.

LONGWOOD FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB LONGWOOD under 18s played an admirable game against Dookie United in the semi-final on Sunday, September 4.

The under 18 side has qualified for finals for the last two football seasons, and the club is only looking upward from here as their young sides are showing plenty of talent, enthusiasm and love for the club.

The under 18 side were bested by Dookie this time, but look forward to another season of improvement and good footy in 2023.

IT was a perfect day for a netball final at Seymour with the sun out and a slight breeze.

Both Echuca and Euroa

were fighting to stay in the finals and the pressure was on from the first centre pass, some nervous shots by both teams saw the ball travel up and down the court a couple of times before a goal was scored.

It was an extremely fast paced game and the Magpies mistakes were quickly capitalised on by Echuca and despite great defensive pressure by Ellie Warnock and Tylah Marchbank the

Murray Bombers went to a six goal lead at the first break.

The start of the second quarter and Echuca’s pressure was making it difficult for Euroa to get a flowing game going but a few minutes in with some great efforts by Karly Wappett and Sophie Owen saw the girls kick it up a gear and the Magpies were fighting back.

Kellie Davidson and Eliza Hoare were able to get some

great feeds into Bree Poole and Karly and Euroa went to halftime with a one goal lead.

Third quarter and Echuca came out strong scoring the first four goals but the Maggies regrouped, Bridget Hill leading from defence.

Both teams were desperate for the ball, Kellie’s efforts both in defence and attack showed she was going to leave it all on the court but despite this Echuca

went into the final quarter with a seven goal lead.

An inspirational speech by coach Ellie Warnock got the Magpies up and about at the start of the last quarter and with great defensive pressure on Echuca’s centre passes and Euroa finding space to get the ball in quickly to their goalers they quickly evened the score.

Kyabram under 16s too strong on the day UNDER 16 IT was a perfect morning for footy.

Sunny and still and the ground at Tatura was immaculate.

First quarter Euroa went out strong and Baxter Fraser kicks us a goal in first five minutes after great passing from midfield then Wikk Creevey

and Darby Wilson follow up with another two goals.

Kyabram however stayed strong and kept it down its end the rest of quarter to almost tie the scores at Euroa 18 to Kyabram 16.

Second quarter Kyabram came out strong and fought hard to win the clearances in the midfield

and brought the score up to EUROA 27 to Kyabram 36.

Coach Matt Mills gave them all a good rev up half time but it was all Kyabram third quarter and the score got away from Euroa.

At end of quarter it was Euroa 37 Kyabram 69.

Euroa played its best footy in the last quarter.

They started winning the clearances and managed to crawl back with some tough tackling.

Sam Leigh kicked a great goal, however, it was all a bit too late.

End result Euroa 8.11.59 to Kyabram 14.12.96.

Great game by Kyabram, who proved too strong on the day.

Convincing elimination final win for Euroa

GVFNL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS THE playing surface looked supreme at Tatura last Saturday for the elimination final between third placed Euroa and sixth placed Kyabram.

With tension in the air as is always the case with so much riding on a successful outcome - the Magpies burst out of the blocks in the first quarter, holding Kyabram to a solitary point whilst kicking - albeit inaccurately - two goals six behinds.

This meant the Kyabram team were kicking with a three to four goal wind in the second quarter and were bound to put pressure on the Magpies.

The second term was perhaps the one that set-up the

win for the Magpies as the defensive efforts all over the ground were second-tonone.

Midfielders in Jack Hellier, Jayden Gleeson and Ben Giobbi set the tone with their in and under work all over the ground.

Ruckman Andrew Smith was dominant in the middle which meant the supply up forward for the likes of the mercurial Jett Trotter was constant.

Euroa booted four goals to Kyabram’s two in this quarter to be leading 43 to 13 at the half-time break.

The third quarter began with a flurry of possession for the Magpies as Erish Uthayakumar and Tristan

Davies lit up the forward line.

Ben Giobbi booted one of the goals of the year - barreling a 65 meter torpedo from inside the center square to break the hearts of the Kyabram opposition.

All-in-all the Euroa team piled on nine goals for the quarter to Kyabram’s two behinds to have a commanding 83-point lead at the final break.

Coach Rowan congratulated his team on a fine third term yet reminded them of the need to play the game right out. This was taken on board, despite the Kyabram side pegging the final margin back somewhat due in large part to the healthy breeze going their way.

the Magpies banked their first senior final win since 2005 and now head into the ‘double-chance’ semi final against Echuca at Mansfield Recreation Reserve at 2.30pm on Saturday.

The winner of this match will book themselves into the 2022 Grand Final; the loser heads off to the Preliminary Final.
