EUROA Health – one of Victoria’s few remaining community-owned bush nursing hospitals – could soon see the operation of its acute, urgent and imaging hospital services taken over by a government-funded health service, Goulburn Valley Health.

Members of Euroa Health will be asked to vote in favour of the proposal at a specially convened meeting on February 22, after the proposal was recently endorsed by the boards of Euroa Health and GV Health.

The development comes after Euroa Health chair Linsey Siede and past CEO Cherree Hunter campaigned in 2022 for the hospital to receive government funding, supported by Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland and her predecessor Steph Ryan, as declining revenues threatened the hospital’s viability.

Ms Cleeland said in March 2023 that Euroa Health and the State Government were “engaging constructively”, and in mid-2023, a process involving Euroa Health and GV Health was initiated with the stated purpose of “explor[ing] a potential change to the way Euroa Health delivers acute care hospital services”.

Information regarding the proposed change has now been published on a website named A Healthy Euroa, managed

by Six O’Clock Advisory, a PR firm acting for Euroa Health and GV Health, funded by GV Health.

“After detailed analysis of various service delivery options, the process has identified a recommended model which, if adopted, would result in [Euroa Health’s] acute care hospital services… being delivered by GV Health,” the website states.

In a statement to this masthead, Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour said if the proposed change goes ahead, acute care, urgent care and imaging services would be delivered by GV Health, while Euroa Health’s other services, including the GraniteHill aged care facility and community services, “would continue to operate under the community-owned entity of Euroa Health Incorporated”.

Community services Euroa Health would continue to deliver would include allied health services to community members in their homes, the operation of the facility’s gym, and bus tours for community members to Violet Town (a joint program with Honeysuckle Regional

Health in Violet Town).

The Bowerbird Op Shop would also continue to be owned and operated by Euroa Health, and would raise funds for GraniteHill.

Ms Seymour was emphatic in stating there would be no staff redundancies at Euroa Health if the proposed change goes ahead.

“Our current acute [and urgent] hospital services team would effectively transfer across and keep operating as-is... that would also be the case for imaging services,” she said.

“In fact, over time, we would anticipate bringing on more staff as those services are expanded.”

Ms Seymour said the proposal needs the support of 51 percent of eligible Euroa Health members and, if it gets up, would require State Government approval.

There were 209 members in July 2023, but Ms Seymour declined to provide an updated membership figure.

“Ensuring our health services can stay local has always been the priority, and this move will ensure the long-term viability of Euroa Health,” she said.

Jim Shovelton, a former chair of Euroa Health, also said the development appeared to be positive.

“To me it doesn’t matter whether it’s privately owned or publicly owned – the question is, if we’ve got a facility that’s going to provide services for the community,” he said.

“If the function is to provide as much healthcare for as many people as possible in the community, then I think it’s a good outcome.”

He said the hospital was founded as a community-owned entity because the town needed a hospital, at a time when there was not a possibili-

ty of government-funded health services in Euroa.

Mr Shovelton’s own grandparents, James and Olive Shovelton, had been closely involved in the hospital’s establishment.

A 2002 book about the hospital’s history, written

by John Sullivan, recounts that Euroa previously had a privately owned hospital named Gilburn, which took its name from the two local nurses who owned it: matron Gilbert and nurse Burns.

Olive Shovelton received a call one night from one of these owners, advising they were retiring, which would leave Euroa without a hospital, and the owner wanted to know what Olive and her husband James planned to do about this.

James called a public meeting to discuss the situation, and in September 1927, the decision was made to establish a community-owned bush hospital.

Euroa Bush Nursing Hospital opened on October 3, 1929.

By LAUREN BURNSIDE JIM was born in Nathalia Victoria on March 20, 1935 as Ronald James Burnside – the youngest child of Olivia Kathleen and Alexander Mackay Burnside.

His older brother Ted passed away and Max and Mary have survived Jim. He also had several half brothers and sisters including Violet Little and Helen Barker, who have passed away also.

Jim described himself is not having much use for schooling and left two months before his 14th birthday.

He went to work for his father who was a builder and stayed working with him until his father’s death just a year later.

In a conversation with his grandson Ben, Jim stated that he went a bit wild for a bit and missed his father terribly.

He went droving in the Riverina and worked on several farms around the Gooram area, then fulfilled his national service responsibility from the age of 19 for three years.

At this point, he started to date Val and they married in January of 1959.

At the time of his passing they had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Jim and Val commenced their married life in a cottage at Larneuk in Gooram where Jim worked as a farmhand.

Daughters Lauren, Cherie and Kathryn(Kate) were born over the next five years.

Moving to Euroa in 1963, Jim and Val ended up living in the home in Scott Street

Lions club legend, community-minded Euroa man remembered that was originally built by his father and continues to be the family home to this day.

He worked for his brother Max for a time driving trucks and went on to own several Bedford and International trucks that he drove throughout Victoria, the ACT and New South Wales as a cartage contractor.

Over his working life he found employment driving trucks, running the Golden Fleece depot in Euroa then working at the Euroa Timber Yard.

He went on to manage the Shell depot in Seymour and for three years prior to retirement, drove with Mobil (Petrogas).

Jim joined the Lions Club at the age of 40 and as a community-minded person, many of his activities stemmed from that membership.

Many in the town of Euroa will have benefited from his vigilance in cruising around the town with the EUROA5 number plate making sure that all was in order – “just keeping an eye on things,” he said.

He would go into the pharmacy to chat to the girls – stirring them up – or pop some newspapers over to Shirley at Brady and Kibble for her bird’s cage.

Selling Lions Mints up in Binney Street would take so many hours because Jim would need to chat with everyone that came along.

He just wanted to be involved.

All of his daughters at one time or another had to go with him to collect the many cans that people left out for him.

He would often pull over on the side of the road to rescue a lonely can.

While he was still able, he would walk the streets with the bag to collect and squash the aluminium cans which raised cash for petrol to fuel Euroa Lions Club equipment such as wood cutters and pumps.

Over the many years he saved the town streets and recycling bins of more than 20 tonnes of aluminium cans.

Known as the Ring Pull King, Jim also diligently removed the ring pull off the cans which contained small amounts of titanium to contribute to the fundraising efforts in support of prosthetic limbs for landmine victims.

With about 3,500 ringpulls to a kilogram, he delivered more than 50 kilograms that he had collected for the cause.

Upon retirement, Jim and Val travelled around every back road of Australia five times with their trusty camper trailer and old brown Land Cruiser.

He kept a diary of everything that they saw and did and a note of all the fuel that he put into it.

He enjoyed his trips to all parts of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, and as Val put it: “With the 16 stacker

When she suggested that they listen to a different type of music he allowed her to play just one of her songs before he told her that was enough.

Even in his last couple of years, Jim’s memories of his travels, what he saw and what he did remained very vivid in his memory and he loved to relate his stories to whoever would listen.

One of the highlights of his trips would be meeting up with singer Ted Egan, cracking his stock whip and

playing Slim Dusty CDs... and letting out the odd yodel.

Taking on a dare or stirring the pot was a part of Jim’s character.

A few would remember him riding a horse through the North Eastern Pub just to prove a point.

Kate recalls that she used to play pool regularly at the Middle pub with her father.

If there were any eligible type blokes around, Jim would offer Kate’s hand in exchange for a blue heeler pup, much to Kate’s embarrassment.

Lauren’s now husband

caught on to the idea and brought in a toy blue heeler when asking to marry her – but told Jim he was only interested in the older daughter.

He would say that his life was not much and that there was a lot of tough times, but the town of Euroa and the Burnside family will never be the same without Jim Burnside.

As a father to three daughters, 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

One thing was for sure – he was loved well and gave all that he could.

Rest in Peace Jim.

Euroa college’s captains talk about year ahead

By LYNNDA HEARD THE quiet relaxed ambiance of Euroa that we have all enjoyed over the summer is broken; school is back.

Parents, carers, teachers and students are all trying to get their heads arounds booklists, uniforms, backpacks, curriculums and the end of the holidays.

There will be a mixture of relief, sadness, nerves, exultation and expectation.

Two students who have all of these emotions running through their heads are Chloe Salter and Rachael Buerckner, both about to start the final year of their secondary schooling, Year 12.

In 2024 they are taking on a tough year of study and have also stepped forward to be Euroa Secondary College 2024 school captains.

“Being school captain was something I felt I was meant to do,” was Rachael’s response when asked why she wanted to be school captain.

Chloe and Rachael are two strong, determined, delightful young woman, as different as their hopes and dreams, yet share their view of leadership as being through kindness.

They both agreed that unselfish concern, and benevolence is how they will be preforming their year as captains.

“I’m excited that I am in Year 12 and that school in nearly over,” said Chloe.

“In Year 7 I had to figure out how college worked, and I didn’t listen to advice.”

Now her reaction is quite the opposite, especially after her years of experience.

Rachael’s message is similar to the 2024 Year 7s and that is, “no matter who you are, be kind and listen to others, you never know what type of situation an individual is facing”.

The Euroa Secondary College teachers have been mentors for both Chloe and Rachael, and they agreed that Ms McClusky, who had been with Rachael and Chloe since Year 7, was always there for them.

STRATHBOGIE Shire residents are in luck: council is now taking bookings for 15-minute one-on-one conversations with the interim administrator, Peter Stephenson.

Residents can register to meet with Mr Stephenson in the following townships: Avenel (February 13); Euroa (February 27); Nagambie (March 12); Strathbogie (March 26); Ruffy (April 9) and Violet Town (April 23).

Mr Stephenson said it was a chance for residents to ask any burning questions or clarifications following his appointment after Local Government Minister Melissa Horne suspended all elected councillors in November 2023.

“We know there are lots of people in the community who would like to chat about this decision and what it means for council,” he said.

“I’d encourage anyone who would like to attend to do so.

“I’m more than happy to discuss any concerns with the community to ensure this transition is well understood.”

Sessions are scheduled up until April 23, despite Mr Stephenson’s interim appointment only being set until March 6.

“We understand these sessions run past the advised appointment period, however, we will be sure to keep the community posted in relation to arrangements beyond this period,” he said.

“The teachers at Euroa Secondary College are friendly and are able to be leant upon,” said Rachael.

“I like my teachers, especially their flexibility and the way they interact with us.

“It is a bit odd when the teachers come into the bakery where I work or when I swim in the lane next to Mr Bright.

“In Euroa you cannot get away with much when the teachers live in town.”

Chloe said she likes it when the teachers give full and detailed explanations during class, making it easier to understand and achieve.

“You don’t always understand at first and it is great when they explain more fully,” she said.

Chloe will be taking study very seriously this year, though she does have reservations about the workload, but is prepared to put in the work to achieve her goals. Throughout Rachael’s secondary schooling

she has placed a lot of pressure on herself and sees Year 12 as no different.

Her scholarship from the University of Melbourne, Kwong Lee Dow School of Young Scholars will cover her tertiary accommodation and some schooling costs, and she is also applying for another scholarship to help her through her tertiary studies.

Both young women are looking further than 2024.

After Year 12, Chloe plans to head to New York for a break and then do a double degree in biomedicine and arts, with the hope of getting into medicine.

“I love working with kids, helping the elderly and disabled – the field of caring for people is where I am determined to finish,” Chloe said with determined conviction.

As much as she has her plan Chloe, very wisely, also realises that things can change and is prepared to look at all options that come her way.

Rachael also has her eyes set on further studies: hers are on a Bachelor of Design.

“I have no particular area of design in mind, I am just looking forward to learning the broad fundamentals,” she said.

With a laugh, she added: “Interior design is interesting, and I do love rearranging my room all of the time.”

Chloe and Rachael like wearing a uniform.

“In any school there are different people in different situations and a uniform means that they are all on the same level,” Chloe said.

“It lessens students being judgmental and make things more equitable when we all wear the same uniform.”

Rachael feels the same.

“If I had to choose what to wear every day I would spend too much time being anxious; casual clothes days are bad enough,” she said.

Apart from their studies and social lives, both Rachael and Chloe have part time jobs in Euroa.

It will be a busy year for Rachael and Chloe, but it is clear that they are focused, dedicated and realistic and are justifiability optimistic about their futures.

Duck hunting green lit by State Government RECREATIONAL duck and quail hunting will continue in Victoria with the State Government announcing its response to a parliamentary inquiry on Monday.

The government will accept seven of the Select Committee’s eight recommendations in full or in principle.

While the committee did not reach consensus in its report, the views of more than 10,000 Victorians and organisations were heard in the biggest response to a parliamentary inquiry ever in Victoria.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation Steve Dimopoulos said duck hunting is a legitimate activity and it supports regional communities and economies.

“Our position has not changed and we’re supporting recreational duck and quail hunting to continue in a safe, sustainable and responsible way with minimal harm to our environment,” he said.

“We thank everyone who contributed to the Inquiry – the process was about listening to different perspectives, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has called the decision a win for hunters and their families, and for science and sensibility.

“Any ban on duck and quail hunting introduced in Victoria would have been based on emotion and political ideology, not

sound science,” she said.

“During the inquiry, the committee heard in evidence that the greatest threat to duck populations is habitat decline, not hunting.

“If hunters continue to revive and care for our wetlands as they have done, then our waterfowl will have habitat to breed and flourish into the future.”

However, Animal Justice MP for Northern Victoria Georgie Purcell was angered by the decision.

“Despite decades of campaigning and insurmountable and undeniable evidence, the Allan Labor Government has confirmed that it will not ban duck shooting - ignoring the key recommenda-

tion of its own inquiry and report,” Ms Purcell said.

“I want to make it clear that as a result of this decision, I cannot and will not work with the government collaboratively, the way that I have in the past.

“They’ve treated me with disdain, they’ve treated the community with disdain and most importantly, they’ve treated our native waterbirds with disdain.

“There is absolutely no way to regulate or monitor duck shooting across thousands of wetlands in Victoria - and this government knows that.

“It’s exactly what the report they are choosing to ignore stated. They should be deeply ashamed.”

NORTH East commuters are set to face more cancelled V/Line services this month, with the union planning more four-hour network-wide work stoppages.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union plans to stop work between 3am and 7am on Monday, February 12, Friday, February 16, Monday, February 19 and Friday, February 23 in a bid to garner better conditions in their enterprise bargaining agreement with V/Line.

The stop work action is expected to affect all services throughout each of days and the public is advised to make other travel arrangements during these days.

Operations staff expected to walk off the job will include

conductors, train controllers, shunters, stations staff and customer service staff, and authorised officers.

At this stage only non-driving grades will participate in the action.

V/Line chief executive officer Matt Carrick said they have been negotiating in good faith with the union and have made progress towards reaching an agreement with the drivers.

“We will continue to communicate with passengers and work hard to minimise the impacts of this action,” he said.

Negotiations with the union have been ongoing for seven months and after considerable negotiation and compromise from both parties, V/Line reported it is nearing an in-

principle agreement with train drivers.

The operations division V/Line has appointed an independent mediator to work towards a resolution with both parties.

As a public sector agency, V/Line must comply with the Victorian Government Wages Policy and Enterprise Bargaining Framework.

V/Line reported that it needs a modern workplace agreement that ensures excellent workplace conditions for its staff while also allowing it to meet growth.

It is working on a contingency plan to counter the industrial action and it’s looking to finalise a plan for replacement coaches in the coming days.

By DARREN CHAITMAN EUROA’S Third Age Club building and RSL building on Kirkland Avenue are finally available for use again, after they were damaged in the October 2022 floods.

Third Age Club president Pam Vaughan said it was “fantastic” to be able to use the club rooms again for a club lunch last week.

“We’re very happy to be back in the club rooms, everyone enjoyed themselves, had a lovely time,” she said.

“We’ve still got a bit to do ourselves, but it’s good to be back.”

She is looking forward to organising concerts, more activities and having fun.

Euroa RSL president Phil Munt said sub-branch members were “chuffed” to have use of the RSL building again.

“We intend to put additional display cabinet in and have more social activities this year, and now the place is available it’s going

He said other groups in town, including Euroa Red Cross and the University of the Third Age, also use the building and they are “very happy that it’s back in business”.

“Naturally, we’re very happy it’s going to be available for ANZAC Day, because time was running

out, really,” he said.

He said more repairs are underway on faulty roof sprouting (which also affects the Third Age Club building), but he believes these repairs will not disrupt any planned activities.

Ms Vaughan reminds Third Age Club members there will be a lunch at Connie’s at 12pm on Thursday, Feburary 8.

“While the community will feel the loss of the service, Euroa Health’s commitment to providing a safe space for not only our volunteers but also to the general public entering the shed is at the forefront of the decision to end the lease of the premises,” Euroa Health

CEO Melissa Seymour said.

“The Bowerbird Op Shop volunteers have provided a wonderful service to the community with thousands of pieces of furniture over time being traded.”

The op shop had previously housed furniture in a shed it leased, accessible at the back of the shop.

Ms Seymour said the shed had been open open six days a week and was manned by volunteers who also repaired furniture, took orders for pieces

required by community members should they come into the shed for sale, and recycled items to the local schools and wildlife providers.

“The Bowerbird Op Shop will continue to raise important funds for GraniteHill... but will no longer accept donations of furniture and white goods,” she said.

The Euroa Gazette understands wet weather last month exacerbated what was believed to be existing damage to the shed.

By PAUL O’BREE RICHARD John (Dick) O’Bree was born in 1936 at Nyah.

He was the son of Richard Thomas Tasman O’Bree and Ivy Dinah O’Bree.

Dick had two sisters: an older sister, Barb, and a younger sister, Marion.

Although Dick was born in Nyah, he spent his primary school years at Euroa.

His father worked for the lands department and was transferred to Euroa.

Dick would go and watch the Euroa football teams of the 1940s; he loved footy, and from those early years at Euroa he made lifelong friends which made it very easy to return years later.

His father then moved to Lake Boga, where Dick met Nancy Marie Dunstan.

They were married in their late teens and moved back to Euroa where they had three children, Ricky, Steve and Paul.

Dick worked on the Euroa Shire outdoor staff until 1973, when he and Nancy took over the Golden Fleece

Deport at the bottom of the Euroa overpass.

They made a success of it and spent the next 18 years in a business that kept them connected to the community.

Dick was a sportsman, he loved it and his life revolved around it.

His achievements were many – he won a football premiership in his first season at Lake Boga in 1953 at 16, and in his last at Euroa in 1971 at 35, with many in between as already detailed in the history books, and past Euroa Gazette articles.

Dick was a handy cricketer and he loved it.

He played with the Wanderers Cricket Club, winning two Maygar bats for the most runs in the Euroa & District Cricket Association when it was of a great competitive standard.

Later Dick took up bowls and enjoyed Saturday and Pennant competitions, and trips with friends to the Lake Boga annual lawn bowls tournament was a highlight.

Dick and Nancy shared a

love of gardening and created an amazing awardwinning garden in Turnbull Street, Euroa.

They worked hard for decades in the garden.

They enjoyed a cuppa in the backyard or on the front veranda enjoying the gum trees, the creek, and overlooking sport on the magnificent Memorial Oval.

Dick adored his nine grand kids and twelve great grandkids.

He was very proud of them all; his face would light up when he saw them.

A few years ago, Dick fell and broke his hip, and dementia followed.

After Nancy died the wind was taken out of his sails, and he never recovered.

His last years were spend in the GraniteHill nursing home where he was very well cared for.

Dick’s life will live on through the history books and so may people’s fond memories of his sport, his friendship, and the many joyful moments he gave everyone through his deeds and his warmth.

No, January 26 really is “Invasion Day” IMAGINE if an uninvited foreign power arrives in Euroa tomorrow, claims “terra nullius”, begin settlement, imposes a foreign monarch, language, political, legal, economic and military system, then spreads out and denies us access to land and waterways, resources and cultural sites.

It then decides to not allow us to speak our languages and deems us unworthy of recognition as humans in the new national constitution.

I bet we’d call that an “invasion”.

So, how is January 26, 1788 “not Invasion Day” (Letters 31/1)?

By all means, celebrate January 26 – it deserves to be.

Just don’t call it “Australia Day”.

The June 3, 1992 High Court Mabo decision, which extinguished “Terra Nullius” and said we all have a right to be here, is more appropriate – a decision made in Australia, by Australians, for Australians.

All of us.

And as for the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 coming into effect January 26, 1949, it was chosen because “Australia Day” had already been celebrated on that date as early as 1818 in one form or another (and also on other dates).

Out of 366 possible calendar dates, it was no accident that January 26 was chosen to reflect

Realistically, the date of Australia Day needs to change THE day of our national celebration, January 26, is certainly becoming increasingly more controversial each year and realistically needs to be changed.

Some prefer to call it Invasion Day, some Atrocity Day, and of course in a democratic society they are entitled to express their opinion.

One thing we all know about January 26 is that only in comparatively recent (post WWII) times has it been deemed to be our national day.

We need to remember that both ourselves and the First Peoples before us are refugees on this vast, unforgiving dry continent – no human being evolved on this continent.

Perhaps first of all we should be celebrating the land itself and the contributions all have made to it – what’s been achieved so far and how we can improve it for all inhabitants in the future.

Perhaps that’s what we should be aiming for, and celebrating on our national day?

January 26 is a Sydney-centric day celebrating the offloading of about 350 convicted felons, with the women prisoners still sweltering in their hulks on the harbour.

And this day is symbolised

by beer drinking and sausage sizzles?

Those fabulous 300 boys from our CMF Forces who stood alone when the 14,000 strong Japanese force landed on Papua New Guinea, and whose numbers were reduced to less a platoon of 32 men by war’s end, weren’t fighting for an Australia that likes to celebrate with a simplistic sausage sizzle – they were prepared to, and did, give their lives for an Australia better than that.

Neither were those three heroes Alan Avery, Lindsay Bear and Bruce Kingsbury who volunteered to restore the Australian line after the Japanese had broken through on the Kokoda Track and were threatening to attack Australian headquarters.

It was a suicide mission – in the finish, Kingsbury went forward firing the bren gun from his hip and was posthumously awarded a VC – they too saw an Australia better than a sausage sizzle.

And we must always remember the Aboriginal boys who stood with their spears, when we had the guns.

A MANIPULATED image of Northern Victorian MP Georgie Purcell that appeared on 9News – which made the politician’s breasts appear larger and revealed what appeared to be her midriff – was one of three AI-generated options to choose from, a 9News spokesman has told this masthead.

In a media statement on Tuesday, 9News Melbourne director Hugh Nailon apologised to the Animal Justice Party MP, explaining “as is common practice”, the image had been resized to fit Nine’s specifications before it appeared behind presenter Alicia Locksley in a TV segment covering Victorian duck hunting laws.

“During that process, the automation by Photoshop created an image that was not consistent with the original,” Mr Nailon said.

Ewing, told The Euroa Gazette it is impossible for Photoshop to manipulate the image in this way without human intervention, echoing a statement from an Adobe spokesperson that said: “Changes to this specific image would have required human intervention and approval.”

In response, a 9News spokesman told this masthead the image was edited using a Photoshop feature named Generative Expand and the only human intervention was prompting the tool to expand the image and selecting one of the generated options.

He said out of three options, an image that appeared to show Ms Purcell’s midriff was selected by a graphic designer after being deemed the most appropriate; another option made it appear an arm was emerging from her stomach, while one more made her dress appear quite crumpled.

On Monday night, Ms Purcell posted on X (formerly named Twitter) the manipulated photo used by 9News alongside what she said was the original photo, which

“I endured a lot on Monday, but having my body and outfit photoshopped by the media wasn’t on my bingo card… this is not something that happens to my male colleagues,” her post reads in part.

But 9News has shared with this masthead what it claims was the original photo sourced by their graphics team, which is cut off right below the chest.

Photoshop was used to automatically generate versions of the image which extended lower to fit the segment’s backdrop, a 9News spokesman explained.

He said the graphic designer was likely juggling multiple tasks and the image was only set to appear on screen for a short timeframe.

9News will examine its internal processes to prevent similar incidents from occurring, the spokesman said.

“While I’m not convinced on the reasoning, I’ve accepted Nine’s apology, and I’ll leave the

commentary on AI and photoshop fails up to the experts,” Ms Purcell said on Tuesday.

“All I ask is that we learn from this.”

Dr TJ Thomson, an RMIT digital media lecturer, has questioned the ethics of 9News’ use of AI. “Even if the process was fully automated, which I doubt, having journalism produced by AI without human oversight goes against the Media Entertainment Arts Alliance of Australia Journalist Code of Ethics,” Dr Thomson said.

“The code states journalists will ‘present pictures and sound which are accurate’ and disclose ‘any manipulation likely to mislead.’

“Journalists aren’t fulfilling these responsibilities if they use AI carelessly.

“My research has shown that news organisations around the world are scrambling to develop policies to respond to generative AI and are actively seeking bestpractice guidance on how to use these tools in creative, innovative, and ethical ways.”

Former Euroa banker Glen Loraine featured on Triple J Unearthed

By DARREN CHAITMAN THESE days, browsing through Triple J Unearthed – a popular ABC platform showcasing new Australian musicians – might trigger memories of banking in Euroa.

Seymour’s Glen Loraine, who was branch manager of Euroa’s Commonwealth Bank branch for almost nine years until late 2022, has been featured on the platform under the name PHATCONTROLLA, his electronic music alias.

Mr Loraine, who played his first ever DJ set at Euroa Music Festival in 2022, said being featured on Triple J Unearthed is “a massive opportunity for me”.

“Hopefully there’s a bit of interest in it and it gets a bit of radio airplay time; you never know what could happen from there,” he said.

The 40-year-old DJ’d when he was younger, but “fell out of love with it” and had not dabbled in his old hobby until the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My boss sort of challenged all of my peers and colleagues to find something to break the monot-

“So I started on my phone, just sort of making some tunes, thought that might be something cool to keep me going.

The father of four thought of the name PHATCONTROLLA while watching Thomas the Tank Engine, the name being a play on The Fat Controller, a character on the children’s TV show.

According to the Urban Dictionary, the term “PHAT” is an acronym for “pretty hot and tempting”, while Mr Loraine explained the term “controlla” refers to one who controls the party.

In 2022, Euroa Music Festival organiser Adam Palmer offered Mr Loraine – who he knew through work – a spot on the festival’s electronic stage.

“That was my first ever sort of public set; pretty nerve wracking, but it was really good fun and it went

Mr Loraine has gone on to play sets at SKKY Bistro & Party Bar in Shepparton, a New Year’s Eve set at the

Nagambie Rowing Club for New Year’s Eve, and Sunday sessions at the Seven Creeks Hotel in Euroa, among other gigs.

He also performed at Euroa Music Festival again in 2023.

Now a site support manager for Commonwealth

Bank in Melbourne, the banker DJ said he is “pretty fortunate at the moment” to have time to work on his music while commuting by train from Seymour to Melbourne’s CBD. “I give myself a couple of hours most days where I can sit on the train and create, or prepare a list, whatever I’m sort of getting up to for the weekend,” he said.

“But my wife gets a bit dirty on me, because there’s often nights where I might be producing a track, or I’ll be in the rhythm or something, and by the time I check it’s 2am, and it’s time to go to bed.

“Particularly if you’re getting into a bit of a rhythm or you’re in the zone, time shoots so fast.

“For me it’s quite relaxing and it turns my brain off, because it is really repetitive, so you don’t have to think too much.”

Mr Loraine’s next gig will be at Seymour’s Tastes of the Goulburn Festival in April, and his music and social media profiles can be found online.

Melbourne artist Bill Potiris inspired

By DARREN CHAITMAN A SCENE depicting the heroic efforts of three older ladies to hang a painting, as they balance against each other and straddle two wooden foot-ladders, is how Melbourne artist Bill Potiris has imagined the unflappable determination of Euroa Library’s art curators, Leanne Baker and Mary Deane.

The painting is one of many by Mr Potiris hanging on the library’s walls; he is the latest artist featured in the library’s ArtSpace, curated by Ms Baker and Ms Deane of Friends of the Euroa Library.

He painted the scene before he had ever met Ms Baker or Ms Deane, after he was told about the determination of the two curators by his friends from Ruffy, Barb Trainor and Andrew Bond, over dinner one night in mid-2023.

The painting became the first in a series depicting other quirky scenes.

“It prompted me to start painting a series of life experiences and little life messages,” Mr Potiris explained.

“It ended up being about ten little paintings of differ-

The series, painted in late 2023, was created especially for the exhibi-

tion at Euroa Library.

Another painting in the series depicts a man apparently enjoying himself as he uses a ladle to scoop up his own bathwater – which resembles a red soup – into a drinking glass.

“The one with the bathtub was more about, I think sometimes we tend to look at what we know and we tend to ignore other things in life,” Mr Potiris said.

“Maybe sometimes we need to stop and look around

and look at what’s going on, and maybe take on other advice or understand different perspectives, because sometimes we tend to drink our own bathwater, so to speak.”

He said the painting was inspired by a lady he worked with many years ago, named Cheryl, who he has “a lot of respect for”.

“Every once in a while she’d say, ‘stop drinking your own bath water’, in effect – it was just prompting me to sit and think, ‘oh, okay, maybe I need to look beyond what I’m thinking’,” he said.

But Mr Potiris, who started experimenting with art in the mid-80s and describes himself as a selflearning artist, said these days the abstract style is not his preference: “I tend to lean towards my little characters and having a little message”.

“I love those connections with people and some of the stories that I hear, and trying to take that story and represent it in one image is just so much fun,” he said.

(Rev.2:11) Until you hear the Voice of God, you won’t be able to sing your own beautiful new song with your ‘new heart’ and ‘renewed mind.’ (Rom.12:2, Ps 96:1,Ps 51:10-19) because you’re out of tune. However, in opening up the Bible, we truly begin to hear Gods’ ‘loving Voice’; His affirming, gracious, convicting, authoritative and powerful voice; helping us to harmonise with the Holy Spirit.

“The peace of God will guard your hearts and minds”. (Phil. 4:7) We all feel anxious and afraid sometimes…mostly, we live in darkness rather than in His Light. King David said, “In peace I lay down and sleep, for you alone, Lord make me dwell in safety”. (Psalm 4:8) Surrender your heart and life to Him and cast all your cares (I Peter 5:7) upon His ‘broad shoulders’, for He loves you.

Research from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), in conjunction with Roy Morgan, shows 3.4 million Australians will be gifting in the name of love this year, down 700,000 from 2023.

Some of the other key findings of the ARA-Roy Morgan research include: • Flowers (mentioned by 48% of respondents), chocolates (33pc) and dinner or a trip away (11pc) are set to be the most popular purchases.

• Intimate gifts remain sought-after, with lingerie (5pc) and adult toys (4pc) ranking within the top cohort of gifts.

• Of those who are planning to purchase a Valentine’s Day

gift, almost a quarter say they will be spending more, while 57pc will spend around the same and 19pc will spend less.

• About 12pc of those Valentine’s gifting will be purchasing a present for someone other than their romantic partner.

• The majority, a total of 70pc of respondents will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a romantic celebratory meal.

ARA CEO Paul Zahra said cost-of-living pressures are set to have a significant impact on Valentine’s Day this year.

“With 700,000 less Australians planning to buy a gift for a loved one this Valentine’s Day – it’s clear just how much of an impact the rising cost of living is having on households,” he said.

“The 18–34-year-old demographic will spend significantly less on Valentine’s

Day this year, driving much of the decline. They’re typically the age group most affected by interest rates and the cost-ofliving pressures.

“With the financial pressure that Australians are under, flowers remain the go-to gift – cementing their status as a staple of the Valentine’s Day experience. They’re a sentimental token of love and affection that can be tailored to any budget without breaking the bank.”

“It’s pleasing to see that the vast majority of love birds will be spending time together with a romantic lunch or dinner either at home or at a restaurant”.

At the top end of the spectrum, some of the notable gifts reported included a $60,000 car, a $15,000 motorbike and a $5000 holiday to Bali.

By DARREN CHAITMAN SEYMOUR detectives are investigating possible arson in Euroa on Saturday after police and CFA units were called to a fiery scene at Hemley Avenue, where firefighters found a bench engulfed in flames.

A CFA spokesperson said the park bench was fully alight when two units from Euroa arrived at about 3.20am.

Leading Senior Constable Mick Voisey of Euroa Police said it is believed an aerosol can, which was left at the scene, started the fire.

He said a nearby tree was also burnt, and it is believed there was an attempt to set fire to a nearby public bathroom, with individuals suspected to have set fire to toilet paper stuffed

The public toilet was not damaged.

The incident was deemed under control by CFA firefighters at 3.27am and deemed safe at 3.46am.

The incident was attended by Seymour Police, while Euroa Police inspected the scene later on Saturday morning.

This masthead found the bench burnt beyond repair and surrounded by yellow hazard tape on Monday morning.

The nearby tree was blackened, but stood intact.

“It’s not something that’s been happening,” Leading Senior Constable Lucas Paul of Euroa Police said.

“We’re concerned if it does become a pattern, but not at this stage.”

Euroa Police are urging readers with information regarding the incident to contact them.

Six Euroa Secondary College to attend nineweek leadership and development school

By LEANNE WINFIELD SIX Euroa Secondary College students – Maddison Mace, Elliette Jeffery, Rinny Bamblett, Oliver Swain, Blake McNally and Logan Reid – will spend the school term outside of Euroa at the School for Student Leadership The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training initiative offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students.

The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students’ home regions.

Students spend nine weeks away from home developing their interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

There are four campuses across Victoria, and six Euroa Secondary College students have been selected to attend the Al-

pine School Campus in term one this year.

Euroa Secondary College has had six Year Nine students attend the School for Student Leadership every year for over ten years.

Students apply to attend with a written application and an interview.

At the camp, along with challenging outdoor activities, the students develop a community project.

In 2022, the students’ community project was to complete the Taungurung mural with an Indigenous artist, Aimee McCartney, and with students from the school.

The mural is displayed on the front of our school stadium.

Students also raised funds for flagpoles to display the Australian, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islands and Taungurung flags.

By DARREN CHAITMAN FORMER Euroa Secondary College teacher Peter Duras became a member of the Order of Australia (AM) on Australia Day for “significant service to sports physiotherapy, and to the community”.

Mr Duras only lived in Euroa and worked at the high school for one year in 1964, but he said “even just in that year, I developed a strong loyalty towards Euroa”.

He said he still has a strong friendship and connection with local lawyer Michael Tehan, who received an OAM on Australia Day. Shepparton’s Wendy Humphries (nee Hearps), a former Euroa resident, fondly remembers Mr Duras as

her Form One (Year Seven) maths teacher.

“He was just a fantastic maths teacher… and a lovely bloke,” she recalled.

“He’s very approachable and he’s achieved a lot in his life, especially with the Australian Commonwealth and the Olympic teams.”

Mr Duras was a volunteer physiotherapist for the Australian Commonwealth Games Team over six different years and a volunteer physiotherapist at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

He was also a volunteer physiotherapist for World Athletic Championships Australian Team four times and a physiotherapist for the Footscray and Essendon Football Clubs.

“I’ve had a very lucky life in sports,” he said.

His other achievements as a physiotherapist are extensive, along with his work as volunteer for organisations including Melbourne’s Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the National Sports Museum.

Like his friend Mr Tehan, he is also a dedicated Rotarian, having been a member of Rotary clubs since 1973.

“It’s a great thrill, it’s very exciting,” he said of receiving an AM. “You don’t do it without having a lot of support around you, including my wife Sue.” He said Euroa still has a place in his heart.

“We never go up the Hume without calling in at Euroa…

I have got a very soft spot for Euroa and always will,” he said.

Strathbogie Shire governance advisor now a municipal monitor at Moonee Valley

By DARREN CHAITMAN PHILLIP Carruthers, who was employed as a specialist governance advisor for Strathbogie Shire Council from June to December last year, is one of two municipal monitors to have been appointed to Moonee Valley Council in Melbourne’s northwest.

According to a State Government media release, Mr Carruthers and another monitor, Prue Digby, have been appointed to Moonee Valley Council “to improve its performance and ensure it serves the best interests of the community”.

The pair will work for a period of six months until late July to “support good governance” at Moonee Valley Council before providing a report to Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne at the end of their term, the media release states.

“Governance issues at Moonee Valley City Council must be addressed... the council needs to

improve and serve its community to the best of its ability,” Ms Horne said.

Mr Carruthers had been engaged

by Strathbogie Shire Council for an initial six-week period following the resignation in June 2023 of people and governance director Dawn Bray.

Some $32,000 was budgeted for Mr Carruthers’ employment in the 2022/23 budget at the time.

But Mr Carruthers stayed on in what Strathbogie Shire Council described as an additional position engaged due to the significant governance issues facing the council.

In late November 2023, council told this masthead it had cost $94,536 to engage Mr Carruthers.

In his time with council, the coolheaded governance professional sat in council meetings beside former mayor Laura Binks and was often called on for advice during meetings.

Mr Carruthers’ employment with council ended in December 2023, following the suspension of all councillors the same month.

Neo-Nazi graffiti spree continues at Euroa Railway Station

By DARREN CHAITMAN POLICE are investigating at least two more neo-Nazi graffiti messages to have appeared in Euroa after two earlier instances were reported by this masthead.

On Wednesday last week, a message painted in white at the bus stop opposite the Euroa Railway Station and Euroa Hotel on Railway Street read “kill k***s”, the second word being a derogatory term for Jews, above a neo-Nazi symbol known as an odal rune, which also appeared in the two previously reported graffiti instances.

At the same spot, scrawled in faint, blue spray-paint, appeared the words “CCP takeover” beside a Star of David; the words “kill k***s” had been painted inside the Star of David.

The next day, on Thursday last week, this masthead spotted graffiti in black spray-paint of a Nazi swastika beside the “N word”, a derogatory term for black people, in

the Euroa Railway Station pedestrian underpass accessible from Railway Street.

Both instances were reported to Euroa Police, who is investigating all instances of the graffiti, Leading Senior Constable Mick Voisey confirmed.

The instances were also reported to V/Line on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Friday, a V/Line spokesman told this masthead the graffiti would be removed on Friday or Saturday.

The antisemitic “kill k***s” message and neo-Nazi symbol at the bus stop was removed by Saturday morning, but the racist message and swastika at the underpass were left in place by V/Line, and still had not been removed on Monday morning.

V/Line was contacted for comment regarding the graffiti that was not removed.

V/Line workers also removed the Star of David graffiti at the bus

stop, but did not remove the words “CCP takeover”.

The alleged neo-Nazi vandalism follows two earlier instances reported by this masthead last week, where the words “f*** k***s” and an odal rune scrawled at the Euroa Railway Station underpass.

The suspect has left possible clues to their identity, as more graffiti in white paint accompanied the recent graffiti at the bus stop, reading, “little rick big d***head” (since removed by V/Line), suggesting the suspect could have an enemy named Rick.

Readers are encouraged to contact Euroa Police with information to identify the alleged vandal, and to report instances of neo-Nazi, antisemitic or racist vandalism to Euroa Police.

Cleeland continues to push for Nagambie crossing supervisor

Ms Cleeland said she would be talking to council administrator Peter Stephenson to push for council to reevaluate their decision not to fund a crossing supervisor.

She said if she was unsuccessful in this, she would continue to raise it with the State Government.

In September last year, council voted not to fund a crossing supervisor for NPS at a cost $15,000 per year, despite the school having one of the most frequently used crossings in the shire, located on a road routinely used by heavy vehicles.

Instead, council voted to spend $7000 on a road safety

audit to “identify appropriate road safety and traffic calming infrastructure”, which has since been completed.

The vote followed an earlier resolution of council in 2023 to withdraw funding from the school crossing supervision program, following an unsuccessful attempt to have the State Government agree to a more equitable funding arrangement.

Council has previously stated the program is the responsibility of the State Government, but it has been a shared responsibility between local councils and the Department of Planning and Transport since it began in the 1970s.

MEMBER for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is continuing to push for Strathbogie Shire Council to fund a crossing supervisor for Nagambie Primary School, after council withdrew funding from the school crossing supervision program last year.

Last week, Ms Cleeland uploaded a video to Facebook in which she filmed herself at the crossing talking to NPS principal Rob French, who described a “near miss” he recently experienced at the crossing, which he has been personally supervising since the crossing was defunded.

by Colbinabbin 13 - 44.

Ron Harrison, Robyn Hyland, Donna Rowley, Howard Geldard (s) had a solid lead mid game after boosting the score with a six.

Colbinabbin won the lead back winning five consecutive ends.

Avenel clawed back a couple of shots, however Colbinabbin won the last end which resulted in the game being drawn at 18 apiece.

Marg Harrison, Graeme Toy, Marion Gittus, Glen Bell (s) let a good lead at the break for lunch slip away, winning only one end in the second half with Colbinabbin powering home with a 26 – 19 win.

The next game for Avenel is at home against Mooroopna Blue.

Avenel 2 – 54 were defeated

Despite winning only ten ends Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) won its game 22 – 18.

Being as many as ten up late in the game, they held off a fast-finishing Nagambie team to claim the only Avenel rink win.

They won the 20th end with three shots up only to see Eildon win the last end with a three.

After 21 ends the result was a draw at 21 apiece.

VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES AT the end of the 2019-2020 season four regular players decided they would no longer travel to Violet Town for Pennant.

Then Covid hit, and there was much upheaval for everyone.

We were unable to put together any sides for the 2020-2021 season, so a few people got together and we grew well as a social club, with Dennis Taylor continuing on as President, with bowls and the introduction of croquet, and VAMP music nights.

The following year we were able to get an eight a side team together for Midweek Pennant, and we made it all the way to the Preliminary Final with four new players.

We commenced an eight a side team for Weekend Pennant in the 2022-2023 season, who then proceeded to go all the way to the Grand Final, being beaten on the day by a very experienced Rushworth side.

We encouraged seven of our Novice players to play in the Novice Singles at Shepparton Park.

Our secretary Margaret Crawford has been fantastic at sourcing and winning grants, two of which have meant we have been able to supply a uniform shirt to Pennant players and our midweek supporter Wendy.

When Marg approached me as President regarding her interest in the Jack Attack competition we ran with it.

Her husband Graham Crawford has been a huge supporter.

And Graham has been instrumental in ensuring Pennant players got an even number of games, including everyone in the teams where possible.

With numbers and interest

growing we increased our team sizes to 12 a side for both the midweek and weekend 2023-2024 season, and we’re enjoying mixed success, but have been in the top four for a long period of time now.

Unfortunately only two of our 11 eligible Novice players attended the Novice singles this year, following rain washing out the first day of Men’s play.

Toni Down enjoyed her games, and Mick had a great time again.

The club introduced Jack Attack to the mix, getting 36 players along to enjoy play on six rinks over four weeks, then making the competition a bit larger, with 42 players now competing over five weeks in the fourth competition starting February 1.

This has been the making of the present day club.

People now know where the club is situated and are enjoying our lovely surroundings on a warm evening.

We try to be inclusive and do a have a range of people from various backgrounds coming along, for a roll and a social drink.

We have had support from all of the main street businesses.

EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By GREG BLATCHFORD THE heat was well and truly on this week as we had our first real taste of summer.

Fortunately, the current hot spell looks like being short lived with more pleasant temperatures forecast over the coming week.

I am sure that this is welcome news for all bowlers.

Kerrie Steers was victorious over Marg Goode in their semifinal clash in the Women’s Club Championship and now defends her title against Libby Byrne in the final.

I am not sure when this game will be held so keep an eye on the noticeboard for details.

Midweek Pennant: It was action aplenty on the green last Tuesday with all three sides at home.

Division one defeated East Shepparton to keep a hold on to fourth spot on the ladder, Division fourth lost to Shepparton Park and our now second on the ladder whilst Division five prevailed over Seymour to climb to fifth spot.

Young gun Sam Mills shines with impressive net 69, with a lost ball GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON FORECAST for hot conditions encouraged a large proportion of the field to play early to beat the heat in the first round of the T J Nolan Honour Board event named after the club’s founder.

Played as a stroke round and including the Drummond Golf sponsored February Monthly Medal, the first round of this prestigious event was won comfortably

by Richard Eddy who shot a personal best matching score of 74-8-66 to claim the win and a two shot lead in this three day event.

Brendan Redfern also was hot with a net 68 one shot ahead of young gun member Sam Mills who shot an excellent 81-13 Net 69 in a most impressive round that could have been much better, but for a lost ball on 16 which just caught some leaves on that objectionable gum tree on the left.

Sam regained his composure to par the last two and sign off for yet another impressive score.

Sam has taken five shots out of his handicap since commencing in October last year and at just 14 years of age is on his way to a sought after single figure handicap which will see him knock off his uncle and start chasing down his father.

Division two went to Richard Johnson with Net 69 for his second win for the weekend after also taking out Twilight with 22 points, Cam Roper and Scott Watson each had 19, in the first round of the Keith Seeber sponsored Twilight Event.

Wednesday Stableford saw that large kitty of swindle money up for grabs on the front nine and Dick Farmer was very happy to collect the payment.

Bruce Demmery on his 70th birthday qualified for the over 70s prize on the fourth which he won at first attempt.

Kevin Mead had 39 points

from his 17 handicap to win the day in a countback over Don Bubeck.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB

By DAVID LOVE THE hottest day of the summer so far just happened to fall on the Sunday golf competition, but an earlier than usual hit off meant that play was completed before the extreme heat arrived.

A monthly medal was on offer for the winner, hotter than the days forecast was Lindsay Hall’s chipping and putting with the short game maestro putting together his best round for sometime 8013-67, this was good enough to claim the monthly medal and go down as the best net score of the year so far.

It also provides Hall with some much needed confidence leading into his own event the Lindsay Hall sponsored WaterBoy Cup on Sunday, February 25.

Runner up continuing his run of good form of late was Jeff Lodding firing a very credible 92-24-68.

Rounding out the top three was Peter Lawrence producing a better than handicap 96-25-71.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Jeremy Ezard with a strong iron onto the third, the ‘Bullet’ Wayne Le Cerf targeting the eighth, Tim Baldwin carving his way up to the 13th and Jim Doyle ecstatic in reaching the 16th.

By ROLF WEBER THE Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association started its 2024 program at Kyabram Parkland Golf Club on Monday January 29 for a 4BBB event.

A long queue was still being processed at the early assembly time of 8.30am that attracted a field of 100 players.

Despite this we were dispatched to our tees in good time.

Conditions were warm and humid as the temperature crept towards 31oC. The greens and fairways were magnificent and the new club house facilities roomy and a delight for our competitors.

Thank you, ladies of Ky Parklands, for your table service and inclusion of icecream and fruit as a refreshing addition to the luncheon.

Winners in the 4BBB event were vet stalwarts Bob Dixon and Graham Scott, both of Shepparton with 45 stableford points.

Runner-up pairing, in a three way countback on 44 pts, was Alan Hausler and John McHale, both of Valley View GC, on 44 pts.

Third placed team comprised Tony Papallo, Kialla, and Terry Allan, Shepparton.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 143 metre 18th hole with Graham Scott, Shepparton, closest in A-grade; Greg Hall, Merrigum in B-grade; and Philip Mitchell, Murray Downs in C-grade.

Our Annual General Meeting followed at 1.45pm where we acknowledged the service of retiring committee and past executive members in Max Dawber, Ron Wilkinson and Ron Smith, with 24, 12 and 12 years outstanding service respectively.

We will be led in 2024 by president Bill Chilcott, treasurer Jim Dean, secretary Rolf Weber, and captain Pooch McHale.

Other office bearers and committee members include Geoff Hamill, Neil Hutchins, Graham Scott, Phil Steers and Jack Dell.

This is still short by about four committee members that we believe is required to maintain an efficient operation throughout the year.

So please, if you love veteran’s golf, and are able to commit some time on match days, please come forward to nominate, as the committee has power to fill the casual vacancies.

Our next event is at Euroa Golf Club on Monday, February 12 2024 at our summer assembly time of 8.30 am.

Entries for the GV versus Central District challenge on March 4 at Heathcote GC are still open at $25 per player, with the field limited to 60 players from each district.

The Euroa event is your last chance for registration to play at Heathcote.

Darby Wilson and Cohen Paul have emerged as the latest sensations set to dominate the upcoming season.

After impressing as bottom-aged players in 2023, the dynamic duo is now poised to leave their mark as top-aged players, eyeing possible selections for the Victoria Country team.

Wilson, known for his lightning speed and midfield prowess, is set to anchor the team’s defence.

On the other hand, Paul, a towering presence on the field, will be showcasing his aerial skills as a highmarking forward, posing a formidable threat to opposing defences. Their inclusion in the final squad of 40 is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

With only 17 players selected from the Goulburn Valley region, having two players from the same club is a remarkable achieve-

ment in itself, reflecting the exceptional talent pool nurtured in the region.

Noteworthy mention goes to Ryan Hill, Mitchell Walters, and William Creevey for their commendable efforts.

While missing a spot in the squad of 40, their perseverance and commitment to excellence will be required for the upcoming 2024 season of the Magpies.

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Darby and Cohen as they embark on their quest to the AFL.

St Paul’s dominates to maintain top spot

By CAROLINE KEENAN PLAYERS were met with toasty conditions in the Benalla and District summer tennis competition on Saturday.

But the heat didn’t bother Moglonemby’s number one man Grant Davey, who won all his sets and led his side to a 21-game victory over Benalla Lawn Green.

Dublin Anderson also claimed all three sets with the final score being Moglonemby 61 – Benalla Lawn Green 40.

Gooram had a successful afternoon with a 35-game win over Terip Terip.

Bob Furphy’s score sheet was impressive, dropping just six games with partners Dan Godsmark, Josh Higgins and Gayle Furphy.

The fine score was Gooram 65 – Terip Terip 33.

St Paul’s remains on top of the ladder and red-hot favourite to go back-to-back premiers after a 37-game win over Euroa Lawn, in the only match played at Euroa.

St Paul’s Faye Mollison made it tough for her oppo-

nents, she conceded a mere four games in her three sets.

The final score was St Paul’s 71 – Euroa Lawn 34.

In section two, St Paul’s made light work of Violet Town, which was missing three of its usual players.

The reigning premier claimed all nine sets comfortably to record a 72 – 18 victory.

And Longwood Lawn managed to snatch two sets away from Gardens Royal with Stevie and Indie Mildren-Nicel each winning a set.

The final score was Gardens Royal 69 – Longwood Lawn 37.

By JACK WILSON EUROA A grade traveled to Numurkah in Round 11 of the Haisman Shield in a one-day match.

Captain Scott Hamilton won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that appeared to be a batter’s paradise.

Euroa’s openers, Declan Redfern and Scott Hamilton, started the innings off very cautiously before Redfern was dismissed with the score at 1-15.

Euroa tried to get their innings back on track multiple times throughout the innings.

Andrew Squires and Andrew Butterworth topscored for Euroa with 33 and

31 respectively.

Euroa ended their 45 overs 8-138.

Euroa’s bowlers got off to the best possible start, with James Lloyd and Walter Jackson picking up one wicket each within three balls of each other.

Vaughan Kirk broke a 35-run partnership for the third wicket with a great catch by Squires.

Jye Bjorksten replaced Jackson and found success in his opening over.

By JOHN BRODIE A WARM day greeted Euroa’s B grade team for their final one day match of the year.

The day started well with Euroa winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Aiming to put runs on the board, Euroa lost two early wickets and looked shaky.

However, Rod Jones (29) and Travis Stefanos (36) combined to put on a display of very patient batting to steady the innings.

The dismissal of Jones in the 33rd over had Euroa at 3/92, a good platform leading into the last 12 overs.

looking to score quick runs, however this wasn’t to be, as some poor shot selection and tight bowling saw the innings collapse to 8/100.

A cameo from Archie Wilson (17) provided a brief spark, including a terrifically struck six from the young man.

Euroa closed out its innings all out for 124.

Numurkah’s innings saw little go right for the home team, despite to early wickets to Brad Gleeson and Cohen Paul, some aggressive stroke play and positive batting saw Numurkah off to a flying start.

Euroa could never make up the ground from there, even with a good spell of bowling from Ryan Hill and

Archie Wilson.

Numurkah chased down the total in the 24th over, only four wickets down.

The B grade side now enjoys a bye over the next two weekends, before returning to the Friendlies for their final game against Tatura.
