MINISTER OUSTS COUNCIL UNTIL OCTOBER 2024 ELECTIONS STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has been suspended by the State Government until October next year, in response to a final report delivered

by Peter Stephenson, the council’s second municipal monitor this term.

Mr Stephenson has been named the council’s interim administrator and the State Government has said a longer-term appointment will be made in due course.

The suspension applies to all Strathbogie Shire councillors and takes effect from Wednesday, December 6 until the next council elections in October 2024.

Minister Horne suspends council until 2024 Victorian municipal elections ■ From page 1

The council and councillors were asked to consider the monitor’s report and respond to the Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne, who had asked councillors to “show cause” by November 10 as to why they should not be suspended.

According to the State Government, the responses from the council and individual councillors showed the council had failed to fully appreciate and address the problems raised in Mr Stephenson’s report, which had resulted in the community receiving sub-standard service from its elected representatives.

The Euroa Gazette understands Mayor Laura Binks had responded to the minister asking for all councillors to be suspended, while some councillors including Cr Robin Weatherald had opposed this request.

In recent weeks, there has been a clear split between councillors as Cr Binks, Cr Chris Raeburn and Cr Sally Hayes-Burke all said they wished for the minister to intervene immediately, whereas Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and Cr Weatherald expressed optimism regarding the council’s future.

“Strathbogie residents deserve a council that serves their needs and it is clear from the work of two municipal monitors that a circuit-breaker is needed,” Minister Horne said.

“The administrator will restore good governance so that local representatives can return in due course and properly fulfil their important roles.”

Mr Stephenson, the council’s new interim administrator, is a local government consultant and former Darebin City Council mayor.

He told The Euroa Gazette his first priority as an interim administrator is “to be fully

briefed and understand the top priorities that exist right now”.

“That’s the first thing to get across to everybody because the previous role [as a municipal monitor] was a different one – it was more about the way decisions were made than the actual decisions,” he said.

“The second thing I would guess is to reassure the CEO and her team that essentially it’s business as usual, and this isn’t something that the workers at the council should be worried about.”

Asked how he felt about returning to the council, Mr Stephenson said as someone who is “largely retired, but still with the capacity to help out” he tends to say “yes” when asked.

He was not surprised by the minister’s decision to suspend the councillors given the findings of his own report and the responses of councillors to the minister’s “show cause” letter.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland commended the decision and said she hoped it would inspire a new generation of would-be councillors to step up at the next council elections.

“This decision, albeit delayed, is a step in the right direction towards ensuring residents of the Strathbogie Shire are governed effectively and with their best interests in mind,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The ongoing uncertainty around the decision from the Minister, coupled with poor governance, has resulted in residents being kept in the dark for too long.”

She also sent her support to council staff, saying they had worked diligently throughout this tumultuous period.

Minister Horne had cited concerns regarding poor governance and conduct when she appointed Mr Stephenson to the council as a second municipal monitor in May. In 2021, then-Mayor Chris Raeburn and council CEO Julie Salomon had written to Minister Horne request-

Mayor calls situation “untenable” after second lapse of meeting Déjà j vu as Raeburn and Hayes-Burke y force meetingg to lapse p again g STRATHBOGIE Shire councillors Sally Hayes-Burke and Chris Raeburn forced a council meeting to lapse for the second consecutive week, after they chose not to attend a reconvened meeting last week to elect a new mayor.

The meeting, which had been rescheduled for Tuesday last week after the same councillors walked out of the previous week’s meeting, was declared lapsed by Mayor Laura Binks due to a lack of quorum at 2pm, the time it was scheduled to begin.

One minute later, at 2.01pm, Strathbogie Shire Council distributed a joint statement to media outlets from Cr Hayes-Burke and Cr Raeburn.

“We have notified the mayor we will not attend the reconvened council meeting … for the same reasons we advised last week,” the statement reads.

“We believe the governance of our council is irredeemably damaged, and the appointment of a new mayor would be even more damaging.

“We are hopeful the minister will act quickly and announce an outcome of the recent municipal monitor’s report.”

Speaking to The Euroa Gazette after the meeting, Cr Binks called the situation at council “untenable” and echoed the councillors’ calls for Local Government Minister Melissa Horne to act.

“In the statements that the councillors have made, they’re highlighting that as a council we have continued to fail to uphold those practices of good governance, our code of con-

duct, and our ability to work respectfully together as a council,” she said.

“My understanding from their statements and their actions from last week and today is they are highlighting that we cannot function – it is not working.

“We’ve tried so many things, and we still have councillors that are breaching our code of conduct, the local government act and making it an untenable situation.

“I would also really encourage the minister to assist us – it’s not a sustainable nor safe workplace because of these really challenging circumstances we find ourselves in.”

Cr Binks would not be drawn to endorse or condemn the actions of the councillors who did not attend the reconvened meeting, but said she understood their decision not to attend did not breach the Local Govern-

ment Act or the council’s governance rules.

The Euroa Gazette asked Cr Binks to respond to the critique that a move to prevent the election of a new mayor is not what the community would want or expect.

“I don’t think where we are is anything that the community would expect or want,” she said.

“I would say that as a council, we are as far from what the community would expect or want as a council, because of years of a lack of commitment to good governance and a lack of commitment to sticking to our code of conduct,” she said.

Cr Binks later issued a media statement calling on the minister to act “now”.

Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and Cr Robin Weatherald were both critical of the councillors’ moves to force two consecutive councils meetings to lapse.

Over $224,908 spent on council’s governance issues

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE ratepayer bill for council’s governance issues is at least $224,908 and continues to grow.

Some $31,665 was spent on the council’s first municipal monitor, Janet Dore, whose term was extended.

Another $55,525 was spent on the council’s second municipal monitor, Peter Stephenson.

During Mr Stephenson’s term, councillors also attended training with Andrew Douglas of FCW Lawyers at a cost of $43,182.

The training with Mr Douglas culminated in a statement of intent and expanded 10-point plan to pave a path for better governance and conduct, which all councillors were expected to sign.

As of last week, some $94,536 had been spent to engage special governance advisor Phillip Carruthers.

The council engaged Mr Carruthers for an initial sixweek period in June following the resignation of people and governance director Dawn Bray, but he has stayed on in what the council said is an additional position engaged due to the significant governance issues facing the council.

These expenses total $224,908.

There have likely been additional costs, including

legal fees for arbitrations involving councillors and fees for Victorian Electoral Commission countbacks following councillor resignations.

The Euroa Gazette is seeking information from council regarding these and other potential costs.

Council has also been verbally advised the two upcoming by-elections to fill the vacancies left following the resignations of Kristy Hourigan and Reg Dickinson will be about $180,000 ($90,000 each).

This would bring the total up to $404,908.

The vacancies will need to be filled even if all councillors are suspended, the VEC has said.

TINY TOWNS FUND APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN THE tiny towns and communities of Northern Victoria can now apply for grants for projects through the State Government’s Tiny Towns Fund.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has asked local community groups to submit their ideas and apply for a Tiny Towns grant, with applications having opened this week.

The fund will offer grants between $5000 and $50,000 to deliver infrastructure projects, such as hiking trails, splash parks, playgrounds, community hall and library upgrades, public art and more.

Eligible applicants include community and non-profit groups and councils in towns with under 5,000 people across regional Victoria and outer metro-Melbourne.

“Our tiny towns have so much to offer and we’re helping them unlock new reasons for people to visit, explore, work and live in them,” Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.

The State Government said their $41 billion investment in rural and regional Victoria over the past decade means small communities are already growing from projects that have helped them become even better places to live and visit.

Mayor asks Minister Horne to make a decision “now”

AFTER Strathbogie Shire Council failed to hold a quorum to a elect a new mayor for a second consecutive week, Mayor Laura Binks issued a media release calling on Local Government Minister Melissa Horne to intervene.

“We are experiencing multiple code of conduct breaches and regular unacceptable behaviour towards each other, the CEO, and the council officers...it is awful,” her statement reads.

“The failure to uphold

these standards of conducts has led to a disrespectful and unsafe workplace and a failure of governance.”

Cr Binks also asked Minister Horne to immediately release the municipal monitor’s report, the media release stated.

“I am committed to creating a respectful decisionmaking environment and I call on Minister Horne to assist me in achieving this,” she said.

“Everyone deserves better.

“Our community deserves better.

“Our CEO deserves better.

“Council officers deserve better.

“My fellow councillors deserve better.

“We need a decision now.

“It has been over three months since the municipal monitor’s report was handed down.

“This is an unsustainable situation for all involved.”

Her statement echoes that made by Cr Sally HayesBurke and Cr Chris Raeburn, who said they hoped the minister would act quickly, after they refused to attend a meeting to elect a new mayor.

DEPUTY Mayor Paul Murray was left disappointed by his fellow councillors’ moves to prevent the election of a new mayor, after Cr Sally Hayes-Burke and Cr Chris Raeburn refused to participate in a mayoral election for a second consecutive week.

“It’s not my view that the only person who can be a mayor is the current mayor,” Cr Murray told The Euroa Gazette.

“It’s my view that the council has every right to examine the candidates for a new mayor, rather than being stymied so that we can only have the one mayor that they presumably support.”

Cr Murray and Cr Robin Weatherald both intended to put themselves forward as mayoral candidates, while Mayor Laura Binks did not intend to nominate again.

Cr Murray said the idea an alternative mayor to Cr Binks would be “damaging” to the council was “really a slap in the face for other people”.

“I don’t know what it means, really – I don’t think it’s a direct attack on me as a person,” he said.

In a media statement, Cr Raeburn and Cr Hayes-Burke said they believed the appointment of a new mayor would be damaging, but did not explain why.

Cr Weatherald echoed Cr Murray’s view, saying council politics “can be a rough and tumble game, but we’re here to serve the community to the best of our ability”.

Cr Murray was also surprised to learn council officers had sent a statement from Cr Hayes-Burke and Cr Raeburn to media outlets and published it on the council website at 2.01pm, moments after the meeting lapsed at 2pm due to their

non-attendance.

He said neither he nor Cr Weatherald had been informed the two councillors would not attend, while it was clear the mayor and some council officers had been told.

Cr Weatherald has claimed Cr Raeburn and Cr HayesBurke supported Cr Binks’ letter to the minister that asked for all councillors to be suspended, while he and Cr Murray had not supported the letter.

Cr Murray and Cr Binks have declined to comment on this claim, citing confidentiality.

Last week, Cr Weatherald told The Euroa Gazette he believed the refusal to allow a mayoral election was a tactic to prevent himself or Cr Murray from obtaining the authority to negotiate with the minister to save the council from being placed into administration.

ARTC must practise good design IN response to ARTC’s latest plans for the Euroa overpass, DESIGNEuroa wishes to contribute the following design feedback.

The purpose of all good design is to reach the best design solution for a design problem that has been presented.

Underpinning all of this is knowing the client and the end user.

In this instance, the community of Euroa is the client and end user that ARTC should be considering in their design responses.

The local community and the business community know the Euroa town center well.

They know what is working and importantly, they know what is not working.

We know that the property at the end of Binney Street (Franz Kloft) is a crucial piece of the puzzle in terms of connectivity between both sides of the town.

The ultimate achievement would be to look down Binney Street and see through to the other side of the tracks.

If we don’t get this site, and get it now, every possibility of making a clear connection between the two sides of town is lost.

For the foreseeable future, overcoming the divide between the two sides of Euroa will never be made.

The physical divide of the rail line creates both a visual and economic disconnect in Euroa.

The view down Binney Street currently has a “full stop” of an industrial shed currently used as a mechanics work shop.

The improvement available here is an aesthetically pleasing extension of Binney Street that visually connects to the northern side of the Euroa township.

An extension of Binney Street through and under the rail to the other side of the tracks could have a substantial positive impact for our business community and the growth in

commerce it could provide for Euroa.

A community that is proactive, not re-active in designing their community is an essential for future growth.

This is a community invested in futureproofing their town for future generations.

Painter Pappas to exhibit at Baddaginnie Hall

By HELEN PAPPAS ARTIST Leon Pappas, who has been painting for 55 years, has recently moved to the Baddaginnie area and is holding a one day exhibition of his work in the Baddaginnie Hall. Mr Pappas has recently joined the Benalla Broken River Painters and has been helping fellow artists in their art work.

In his exhibition he will have watercolours, acrylics and oil paintings, including some from the Baddaginnie area.

Also, wrapping paper and cards printed with Mr Pappas’ artwork and a 66-page sketchbook with seven paintings and blank pages will be for sale.

This will be his first exhibition in Baddaginnie.

If you are a painter in the surrounding area, he would be interested in meeting you, as he will be in attendance all day.

The exhibition is for one day, this Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome.

Mayor hits back at “disrespectful” comments made by fellow councillor Weatherald’s radio comments an example p of “insidious sexism”: Binks MAYOR Laura Binks has issued a statement responding to “incredibly disrespectful” comments made about her by Cr Robin Weatherald on ABC Shepparton Breakfast last week.

On the radio show last month, following an earlier interview with the mayor, the controversial councillor blamed the council’s recent issues on “bad leadership”.

“It gets back to the current mayor and her failure to manage the council in a responsible grown-up manner, and not act like a schoolgirl,” Cr Weatherald told Breakfast presenter Nic Healey.

Cr Binks has now called the comments “incredibly disrespectful” and an instance of “insidious sexism”.

“As we are in the depths of the 16 Days of Activism campaign – something that council participates in each year to draw awareness to violence and dis-

respectful behaviour towards women – I cannot believe the position I have found myself in this week,” she said.

“I could not sit by, especially during this campaign, and allow such incredibly disrespectful remarks to not only be made about me, but to also be repeated across several public platforms.

“Referring to a grown woman in a leadership position as a ‘schoolgirl’ is some of the most insidious sexism I have experienced publicly during my time as a councillor.

“This comment was made by a fellow councillor and has continued to be reported on and rehashed in local media – meaning I’ve heard myself being referred to as such at least four times over the past week.”

Cr Weatherald’s comments, aired by ABC Shepparton Breakfast last week, were reported on

Government News Roundup (a website for local government news) and the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) weekly podcast.

The comments were condemned by the VLGA podcast hosts as “outrageous”.

“I don’t know that it’s for us to be the ones calling that out, but I haven’t heard anyone actually take him to task for those comments, which I just thought was so wrong,” host Chris Eddy said.

The sentiment was echoed

by Cr Binks herself, who said it should not be her sole responsibility to call out the remarks.

“I am determined to see a shift in the culture of local government and this will never change if it continues to be the sole responsibility of those being abused to call out the abusive and disrespectful behaviour,” Cr Binks’ statement continued.

“It is time society put an end to this.

“It is simply not okay.

“The standards we walk past are the standards we accept.

“We need to stand up and be brave.

“Disrespectful behaviour – call it out.”

The day following Cr Weatherald’s remarks, Cr Binks was invited back onto ABC Shepparton Breakfast to respond.

She said his comments were “absolutely” indicative of the conduct and governance issues that have plagued the council recently.

Cr Weatherald told The Euroa Gazette he sticks by his critique of the mayor’s leadership, but admitted it had been a mistake to use the term “schoolgirl”.

“I’d gladly retract it and apologise,” he said.

“She’s had a hard task, give her a fair go.”

“It was a petulant term used in the heat of the moment.”

There’s a common assumption, that we can ‘earn’ Heavens’ credit, (Ephes.2:8-9) when we die, through living a ‘good’ life, even if we’ve always ignored God Himself. However, no-one can boast, for it is by Gods’ Grace alone that we are saved. Jesus Himself said, “You are either for Me or against Me”. (Matt.12:30) “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world; this is the victory that has overcome the world _our Faith. Who is it that overcomes the world, except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?. (1 John 5:4-5) These are timely days for considering what you believe and acting upon it, as follows; “For it is with your heart you believe and are justified; (Rom.10:910) and with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

THE October 2022 floods may have forced the Euroa Miniature Railway to close, but no amount of water could dampen the enthusiasm of its volunteers, who are now overseeing an operation to rebuild the tracks better than ever.

President Wendy McDonald and secretary Tim Miller invited The Euroa Gazette to the flooddamaged site on Turnbull Street last week, where they showed off the progress made on repairs over the last two months.

“Our main tack has been to reduce our flood exposure, because we know full well it’s going to happen all again,” Mr Miller said.

He said the biggest change underway is the removal of what they call the Southern Loop – a long track that extended all the way to Toomey’s Bridge.

The Southern Loop had only been used once a year (on Show and Shine day) and it was particu-

“We don’t think we’ve really lost a great deal, and it means we can concentrate on what we’ve got left,” Mr Miller said.

Other changes to reduce flood exposure will include realigning a track to bring it down off an embankment, and building the tracks at ground level.

Previously, the tracks were

raised above ground level, but Mr Miller explained lower tracks will be better protected because flood damage is caused by moving water (higher off the ground), not stationary water.

As a retired engineer, Mr Miller has been advising the contractors, Douglas Building, on the repair job.

“This is a really left-field job for

these contractors because they’re basically builders and in all honesty, I think they’re pretty brave to take it on,” he said.

“But Douglas Building has just been ultra-cooperative and they have a genuine desire to see us really go forward with this and improve things.”

Ms McDonald said the volunteer-run operation, which first started in 1994, is hoping to reopen in early 2024 for once-amonth rides.

She said its opening will bring more people to Euroa: at least 100 people visit each run day, with about a third from outside the Strathbogie Shire area.

The Euroa Miniature Railway infrastructure is owned by Strathbogie Shire Council.

“The Euroa Miniature Railway is a beloved local attraction, and we cannot wait to see it reopened and providing entertainment for the community once again,” Mayor Laura Binks said.

NEW LIMIT: A new speed limit of 60kph, down from 100kph, has come into effect on the winding 5km stretch of Euroa-Mansfield Road between Ridge Road and the Gooram Falls carpark, where there have been several car crashes this year, including a fatal crash in August. Gooram CFA captain Michael Stubbe, who campaigned for the change, said it was a great result and he hopes lives are saved.

Pacific koel returns to irk residents once again Papua p New Guinean bird won’t stop p calling g

By DARREN CHAITMAN THE most hated bird in Euroa, the pacific koel (pronounced “kerl”), is back in town.

Many residents have noticed the tourist’s persistent, repetitive call to attract a mate in recent weeks.

“It goes for several years where it doesn’t appear in town, but the last three or four years it seems to have been fairly regular,” local bird photographer Bill Harris said.

“I think part of the problem is it’s hard to spot – people can’t always see it, but they can always hear it.”

The bird is so hard to spot that Mr Harris has only ever photographed it once, in the Northern Territory.

In their book Birds of Australia, authors Iain Campbell et al explain the migratory bird from Papua New Guinea “tends to sit well hidden while loudly and incessantly calling from the treetops”.

This journalist was woken at 5am one morning by such a performance.

I popped in earplugs to mute the bird’s call, and when I removed the earplugs on waking again at 8.30am, the koel was still calling out for a lover on repeat.

Euroa’s Libby Woodhouse has pondered why it is the koel’s call gets on our nerves more than other birds.

“We live comfortably with the sounds of so many birds, the pip-pip of the pardalote, the rowdy cockatoos, the cawing crows, the noisy miners, the lovely shrike thrush, the haunting

PHOTO: Bill Harris call of the currawong, the warbling magpies, the raucous wattle birds, but somehow with koel we are not so comfortable and relieved when he finally leaves for other parts,” Ms Woodhouse wrote in a note to this masthead.

As if its call alone were not bad enough, the koel is also a parasite.

“It is parasitic, laying its eggs in the nests of orioles, honeyeaters, Magpie-Larks, and riflebirds,” Iain Campbell and others write.

Euroa has reputation for welcoming guests, but one bird is stretching the limits of the town’s hospitality.

EUROA Probus Club president Fred Jungwirth welcomed members to meeting on Monday last week.

Numbers present were disappointing.

He thanked various people for their ongoing help within the Probus club.

Faith Irving (Probus club historian) spoke briefly about the history of our club and asked members to contact her if they had anything to add to our Probus historical archives.

Our guest speaker for the meeting, Alison Worland, recently returned from three months travelling overseas with a friend.

They spent two months walking the Camino de Santiago.

Alison read a book 40 years ago which had a story about someone walking the Camino.

Ann Kelly wrote story for The Euroa Gazette about David and her trip, rekindling Alison’s interest.

Don Elias Valina Sampedro was a parish priest in O’Cebreiro who studied the history of the St James Way Pilgrimage to Santiago.

In 1984 he put in motion his mission to recreate the trails along the Camino, starting in Roncesvalies.

He drove across the whole north of Spain and painted arrows with yellow paint.

He told bystanders and police

he was planning an invasion.

Unfortunately he died in 1989, so he didn’t get to see his vision fully accomplished.

Alison showed pictures of their travels through beautiful countryside; very old buildings including magnificent churches; accommodation places and ancient stone bridges.

Fred thanked Alison for her interesting talk.

Carols on summer’s night by lake

By DIANE GRANT ON a hot summer’s night, with a clear blue sky and warm sunshine Nagambie’s Jacobson’s Outlook was overflowing with Carol’s participants and families on Sunday.

They came to celebrate Christmas and to sing along with the carols organised by the Nagambie Lakes Community House Carols committee and various different community organisations, businesses and volunteers, which included the three Nagambie churches, the Lakeside Larks choir and Strathbogie Shire Council.

40 years of being a place to gather and share life as a community

By REBECCA THRELFALL A CELEBRATION took place at the Longwood Community Centre on Sunday to mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the facility.

Guests gathered to share memories of their involvement with the centre; from the first planning sessions and the first bricks being laid to the more recent and ongoing improvements of the facility.

Annabelle Cleeland, the state member of parliament for the Euroa district, attended the event with her family.

Annabelle made a thoughtful speech about the spirit of the community of Longwood and the significant asset that the community centre is.

She made special mention of her predecessor Bill Sykes who was also in attendance.

Speeches were also made

Memories were shared of achievements that the centre has seen, including the creation of the building which was an achievement in itself; volunteer-initiated

and largely volunteer-built, the project was completed 15 months early with no debts left to be settled.

The centre has hosted many functions from weddings, funerals and birthdays to national events as well as the significant ongoing use for sporting activities.

In recognition of the long term contributions of two of the founding members who are still active today, the kitchen was officially named the Jean Hamilton Kitchen and the meeting room named the Tom Brodie Meeting Room.

The celebration presented an opportunity for former and current members to meet and share their experiences of this significant venue.

A special thanks goes to former committee members Judi Hanlon, Marg McKracken, Peter Bjorksten and Andy Keats, who were present on the day.

An afternoon tea was provided by the legendary Longwood Community Centre catering department as a show of thanks to all those who have contributed to the centre through the years.

The Longwood Commu-

nity Centre Committee of Management gives thanks to all those who have contributed to the centre: those who attended the afternoon tea, those who could not join us, and those who are no longer with us.

It is through the generosity of these people that the facility came to be, has operated though to this day and will continue into the future.

GUEST SPEAKER: Mr Whitten showcased real-time stock trough levels for properties in Colac, NSW stock routes, Wilcannia,Wagga and locally here in Strathbogie, see the livestock and wildlife drinking at the dams.

Phil also showcased to the residents the workings of tank water level sensors and rain gauges on stock water tanks, which is all accessible using mobile data.

All from the comfort of GraniteHill, residents and staff witnessed this first hand and real time stock trough levels for properties in Colac, NSW stock routes, Wilcannia, Wagga and locally here in Strathbogie, and everybody was simply left in awe of how times have changed.

“By bringing cuttingedge farming technology to GraniteHill, we’ve not only connected our residents to their agricultural roots but also opened a window to the incredible advancements shaping our world,” Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour said.

Residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the morning, comparing how times have changed from the ‘old days’ and how technology has significantly improved the way farms are managed.

“Light up Longwood” has certainly been a fantastic initiative to bring on some Christmas cheer.

National Grinch Day, December 1, kickstarts the 25 Days of Grinch-mas.

During this time “Grinch & Max” will be roaming around Longwood, so be sure to keep an eye out for them both.

You can meet The Grinch & Max in person at the many locations around Longwood as he will be popping up in 25 different locations around our awesome little town and community.

The Longwood Fire Brigade Christmas Party will be held Saturday, December 9 from 6pm with a barbecue provided; please bring salad or sweets to share.

There will also be a special visitor coming along on the night.

The Longwood Beer, Wine and Cider Festival is on again on Saturday, February 24 at 2pm8pm.

Relax under the gums at this outdoor, marketstyle festival with regional craft beer, local wine, cider and spirits.

Non-alcoholic drinks, food vendors, live music and kid’s activities are all part of this fantastic event.

Bring your chair or rug and invite the whole family.

The festival is run by a sub-committee of the Longwood Football Netball Club, with proceeds going towards projects for the club and community.

Past projects funded include a second netball court, lighting and shelter, and a festival storage container.

RESIDENTS of GraniteHill recently had Phil Whitten from local Euroa business Farm Monitoring Solutions visit as a guest speaker.

Having a background in the wool industry and now farm monitoring solutions saw Phil connect with many residents at GraniteHill instantly, as residents and staff have farms locally or grew up on the land before moving around the area.

Phil provided live footage and images the result of a project by Farm Monitoring Solutions to install the latest technology on livestock water points across one million acres owned by the one family at Wilcannia in western NSW, which enables the farm managers and business owners in South Australia to keep a close eye on their water, livestock and rainfall.

The technology enables cameras to take photos of dams being filled by solar pumps enabling the managers to see that the solar pumps are working and to

GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON THE Euroa Shield Honour Board event sponsored by Tehan George and Co Lawyers attracted a large field of 76 players including visitors from 10 clubs.

The event was played in perfect conditions and the scores showed how good the course is at the moment.

Father and son duo Paul and Lachie Robinson teamed together perfectly for an amazing plus 13 score to win the Men’s event.

Paul’s round was equivalent to 63 off the stick from his plus one handicap and might have even been better as he was sitting on a couple of birdie putts while son Lachie had already won the hole.

An unofficial course record by at least three shots.

Lachie also played well, making some nice putts to round out the score.

Runners Up were Captain Ross Wishart and visitor Brendan Egan on +10 in a three way countback over Matt and Sam Mills and Lance

Saturday was a stableford round with 32 men and 10 ladies.

Division one winner was Plugger Corradin on 39 in a countback over Dick Farmer.

Division two saw Kynan Pell score a massive 45 points which saw five shots cut from his handicap, Mick Anderson’s 41 and Tim Cullen 41 points only good enough to claim a ball in a high scoring day.

Eight players were 37 or better.

In the ladies Gail Allen won Division one while Ros Doxey took out Division two, both players reaping the rewards of a lesson during the week.

Twenty points was the score needed for the three way countback in the Friday Twilight event which was won

by Tim Cullen over Michelle

Gary is to play Keith Seeber and in the other Semi Final Lucas Paul plays Ross Wishart.

In the ladies, Sarah Bullen plays Lorraine Ellis while Melissa Eddy takes on Judy McLean.

Sunday is also the final hit out for the Giggle Golf beginners Clinic and also the Strathbogie Tournament.

By KATE DONOVAN Midweek Pennant Division six, Round seven Avenel 2- 35 were defeated by Mooroopna White 12 – 42.

Mark Morse, Moiann Papageorgiou, Nyoli Bell, Marion Gittus (s) won the lead on the 4th end and were never headed as they bowled their way to a solid 23 – 13 win.

Losing six ends mid game did the damage for Marg Harrison, Graeme Toy, Ron Harrison, Glen Bell (s) going down 12 – 29.

Avenel are fourth on the ladder and play top team Colbinabbin next week.

Midweek Pennant Division three, Round seven Avenel 2 – 57 were defeated by Alexandra 14 76.

Shots up on the end wins were low, but the number of ends won was what counted as Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) won 23 – 16 after winning fifteen ends.

A close game for Rusty Schwab, Howard Geldard, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) which came down to the last end and unfortunately for Avenel, Alexandra prevailed winning the game 23 – 21.

Some days you’ve got it, other days not so.

The latter for Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) as they lost their game 13 – 37.

Avenel remain on top of the ladder and play Mooroopna Golf away in Round eight.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round eight Avenel 4 – 79 were defeated by Rushworth 14 – 84.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) were three up on the 17th end when Rushworth won seven of the last eight ends to claim the win, 28 – 19.

Rusty Schwab, Graham Lewis, Dennis McGregor, Spud Furletti (s) had a 14-shot loss against an accurate Rushworth rink, 13 – 27.

Avenel remain seventh on the ladder and play away against Mooroopna next Saturday.

Weekend Pennant Division seven Round eight Avenel 0 – 24 were defeated by Nagambie 14 - 61.

Moiann Papageorgiou, Kyle Pedder, Ross Sinclair, Marion Gittus (s) led for most of the first half, but Nagambie scored a five and a four late in the game which sealed Avenel’s fate, losing 15 – 22.

Mark Morse Norm Billingsley, Graeme Toy, Glen Bell (s) were up against a very in form Nagambie foursome and were no match for the seasoned rink, losing 9 – 39.

Avenel are sixth on the ladder and play Seymour next Saturday.

In an exciting development, the Violet Town Community Op Shop has generously pledged a donation of $5000.

If anyone else wishes to make a financial contribution towards the roller, your support would be greatly appreciated.

The installation of the new bank and ditch lining has been completed, enhancing the overall aesthetics of our facility.

On the greens, our Midweek team continues to showcase competitive spirit, maintaining the second position on the ladder after securing a victory at home against Euroa.

Over the weekend, our team faced the top-of-the-ladder Yea in a home match.

Despite mixing the teams and experiencing mixed success, Laurell Heckenberg’s rink secured a notable win.

However, the overall result was a loss with a total score of 52-47, 2-14.

As a result, we currently hold the fifth position on the ladder.

IN 1967, a remarkable cricket feat unfolded on the Strathbogie grounds as Gary Mackrell, representing the Strathbogie Cricket Club, achieved a hat-trick against Miepoll.

His victims were none other than Don Steers, Alan Cullen, and Ian Clarke, ultimately securing an impressive tally of six wickets for a mere 19 runs.

Gary Mackrell’s cricket prowess extended well beyond that memorable day.

A versatile all-rounder, he played a pivotal role in two Strathbogie A Grade Premiership teams (1966 & 1967) and consistently represented the EDCA from 1965 to 1969.

His commitment to cricket took him beyond local boundaries, as he contributed to the EDCA Provincial Melbourne Country Weeks triumphs in 1966 and 1969, as well as being part of the victorious NorthEast Cup campaigns in 1968 and 1969.

Notably, Gary was a regular face in the Northeast Colts (under 21) competition, often leading the Euroa side as captain.

His cricket journey included membership in the 1965 Under 21 MacHolten trophy-winning team.

In 1968, he captained the Under 21 Northeast side in a clash against the Tasmanian Colts.

Acknowledging his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Under 21 Maygar Memorial bat in 1966.

As documented by John Gilbert in ‘100 Years of Euroa and District Cricket 1904 to 2007,’ Gary Mackrell’s cricket legacy remains an integral part of the region’s sporting history.

Euroa Lawn surges to handy second place

By CAROLINE KEENAN EUROA Lawn has moved into second place on the on the Division one ladder after a comprehensive win over Benalla Lawn Green at Benalla on Saturday.

The visitors only dropped one set for the afternoon with the ladies Marja Wondergem, Row Ellis and Julie Brooke making light work of the young Benalla outfit.

The final score was 67-35.

On 43 points, Euroa Lawn is just holding off Longwood Lawn on 42 points for second place.

Longwood also enjoyed a comfortable win on Saturday over Gooram, losing only one set for the day.

Jacob Tarran, Brent Moore, Leanne Armstrong, and Lily Meehan won all their sets to lead Longwood to a 70-46 victory.

St Paul’s is six points clear at the top of the table after taking on and beating Strathbogie at Strathbogie.

Kelly and Jake Hill made it tough for their opponents, losing a total of just 12 games between them for the afternoon.

Again, Faye Mollison was a standout winning all her sets comfortably and dropping just four games for the day.

The final score was 65-30.

In division two, the ever-consistent Swanpool proved too strong for an undermanned St Paul’s outfit.

St Paul’s debuted another young talent in Sissy Davey who showed plenty of promise.

But her addition wasn’t quite enough with the ladder leader recording its second loss for the season and hanging on the top of the table by just four points.

The final score was 70 to 47.

In better news Longwood Lawn enjoyed its second win for the year after beating Violet Town.

The win has moved Longwood from bottom of the ladder to fourth place.

The additions of Judy Sands and Mary Kelly were welcomed with Judy dropping just two games for the afternoon.

The final score was 59-31.

Walter Jackson earns representative honours in Northern Rivers U16 cricket team

By TIM JACKSON WALTER Jackson, a Year 10 student at Benalla FCJ and the third youngest of four boys to Tim and Christine Jackson from Euroa, has achieved a significant milestone in his cricketing journey.

He has been selected for the Northern Rivers U16 cricket team to compete in the Victoria Country Cup Carnival at Albury.

The week-long tournament, scheduled from Monday, December 11, to Thursday, December 14, will feature a mix of 20/20s and 50-over cricket against formidable teams from other country regions.

These include North East Knights, Central Highlands, Western Waves, and Gippsland Pride, with a Country Victoria side also in contention.

The final, set to take place in Melbourne at a later date,

promises an exciting culmination to the event.

Walter’s selection is a testament to his outstanding performances during Country Week for Cricket Shepparton and an impressive showing in an All-Star game earlier in the year against North East Knights at Benalla Gardens Cricket Ground.

Chosen from a squad of 50 players who underwent training during the winter months, Walter, a versatile bowling all-rounder, credits the Euroa Cricket Club and Cricket Shepparton for providing the platform that led to this opportunity.

He expresses gratitude to his coaches for their guidance and unwavering support throughout his journey.

As Walter prepares to represent the Northern Rivers team, the entire community wishes him the best of luck in the upcoming Victoria Country Cup Carnival.

Showdown goes down to the wire EUROA CRICKET CLUB A-GRADE IN a spirited two-day encounter, Euroa A grade faced Old Students at the Friendlies Oval, showcasing a commendable performance with both bat and ball.

Euroa elected to bat first, and the openers set a solid foundation for the innings.

Notable contributions came from Andrew Squires (31), Scott Hamilton (39), Andrew Butterworth (43), and Fletcher Paul (23).

The team reached a total score of 221, with the innings concluding after 78 overs.

The top performers with the ball for Old Students were L Callegari (3/59 off 29 overs), M Shahid, C McCabe, and H Willaton, each securing two wickets.

Old Students, tasked with chasing down Euroa’s score on the second day, entered the match with determination.

After 78 overs, they suc-

cessfully matched Euroa’s total.

Key batsmen for Old Students included F Odell (68), L McPhillamy (59), M Shahid (34), and S O’Brien (29).

Euroa’s bowling effort was led by Vaughan Kirk, achieving an impressive 5/67 off 17 overs.

Additional contributions came from James Lloyd (2/41), Jye Bjorksten (1/31), and Liam Phillips (1/0).

Despite the eventual loss, Euroa A Grade demonstrated a cohesive team effort and achieved their best batting score in recent times.

The consistent improvement each week reflects positively on the team’s progress, and a victory seems imminent.

Looking ahead, Euroa A grade will travel to Vibert Reserve for their next challenge, facing Karramomus in another two-day match.

The team is optimistic about building on their recent performances and securing a well-deserved victo-

ry in the upcoming fixtures.

By JOHN BRODIE A TOUGH two days for Euroa’s B grade saw them defeated by an innings and 95 runs when they travelled to Kialla Main Oval to face Old Students.

Winning the toss, Euroa elected to bowl first in overcast and blustery conditions.

Euroa were tight from the get go, restricting the scoring of Old Students early.

Things looked up for the Magpies after Darby Hoare (2/39) broke through to remove one of the openers, however a solid run of part-

nerships and sensible batting allowed Old Students to progress to 5/201 before declaring.

A tough 15 overs late in the day saw Euroa 1/33 at the close of play, a good start in what would prove to be a difficult chase.

Day two started poorly for Euroa, who were down players through illness and injury.

It didn’t get any better from there as Euroa saw their innings close at 7/52.

This was despite a lionhearted effort from Leo Murphy (7 off 50) and Grayson Kirk (15 off 79).

Both boys showed great grit and determination to stave off the inevitable.

Well short off the total, Euroa were sent back in to bat again in the hopes of batting out the day to avoid outright defeat.

Again Euroa lost wickets with alarming regularity, to have their innings draw to a close at 7/54.

Special mention again

to Leo Murphy who fought for another 50 ball innings, showing a fighting spirit that he is to be commended for.

Both teams should also be applauded for the spirit in which the game was played.

Euroa are hoping to turn the tide of fortune in their favour next round as they face Karramomus at the Friendlies for the final game of the year.

By JACK WILSON EUROA hosted Northerners at Memorial Oval in round seven of the D grade competition.

Connor McCombe lost the toss with Northerners choosing to bat first on a green Memorial Oval pitch.

McCombe and Travis Stefanos opened the bowling and bowled very tight lines

and the pressure continued when Ben Jones was handed the ball and dismissed the visitors opener rattling the stumps.

Lucas Paul entered the attack and in his first three overs he attained three wickets and by the end of the innings he had four along with Robbie Wilson who took two wickets and Jack Wilson taking the other wicket.

With 147 needed, Euroa started the run chase poorly with the score being 5-31 after 14 overs.

Lucas Paul played a lone hand top scoring with 58 with contributions from Mitch Penman and Imran getting the team back in the contest but to no avail.

Euroa falling short by 12 runs.

Next week D grade hosts Numurkah in Strathbogie.

Triumphant victory for Euroa Bowls Club in division one clash EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By GREG BLATCHFORD ON Saturday the Club had one of its greatest days in years when our Division one side conquered the mighty Shepparton Golf combination in an engrossing and hard fought battle at home.

We got an early jump but as expected golf hit back to get their noses in front.

However our players lifted again and after 98 ends (with three rinks completed) the scores were tied 88 all.

Tony Kingma, Jan Watters, Jamie Greasley and Charmaine Reid had won by one shot – 25 to 24; Ken Sutcliffe, Kevin Milner, Billy Sargood and David Cerini had tied 22 all and Andy Houston, Billy Taylor, Alex Grant and Sam Barkly had just gone down 23 – 24 on the final end.

Over on rink one Shane Drysdale, Marc Stevens, Billy Jennings and John Groat were tied 18 all – after 23 ends - against a Shepp Golf side skippered by Brad Orr. There had been some magnificent bowls played over the course of the day but the stage was set for a two-end knockout.

As they say come the moment cometh the man/woman/him/her - and our team delivered when it counted most scoring two shots on the 24th end and one on the 25th to seal a 3 shot (91 to 88) victory and gain 15 valuable points for the club.

Whilst I shouldn’t single one player out after 100 ends it must be noted that Skipper Shane was awesome when it mattered.

It was Marc Stevens 200th game of Weekend Pennant bowls for Euroa so it was an extremely memorable day for Marky.

Shepparton Golf are perennial premiers and were sitting seven zip this year so the result is a great boost for our players and club and should give us added belief for the rest of the season.

There was discussion following the game as to whether Euroa has ever beaten Golf in Division one before with Ken Sutcliffe saying he could not recall doing so.

However, Gary Grant (ex Euroa and Shepparton Golf stalwart who has now returned to Euroa under the Sun/Father rule) recalls it happening once in his time.

Next Saturday we are again at home and take on the team from the Ponderosa (second placed Kyabram) in what will

be another big test.

This was not the only match for the day as our Division four team took on the strong Eildon combination in a battle for top spot at the halfway point of a longer season.

This too was aa engrossing affair which went down to the wire.

As with Division one Euroa got away to an early lead and were up by as much as 11 shots at stages during the game.

Eildon finished strongly and were a chance to win the game on the final end but we held tough to triumph on the day.

Div four v Eildon – 90 to 88 and 14 points.

The one disappointment was that our Division six side won via forfeit from Shepparton Golf.

This is the second forfeit received this year and next week we are scheduled to play Shepparton Park (away) who also forfeited yesterday.

Hopefully we will get a game as it is the final round before the Christmas break with matches not resuming until the January 20.

It’s possible we could face a break of eight weeks between games and whilst this is a sign of the times, and no ones fault, it is not good for bowls.

On Monday the November 27 the club hosted some visitors from Monbulk who enjoyed a friendly roll and then sampled some of the local product at a wine tasting.

On Tuesday they tried their hand at croquet taking full advantage of the great facilities on offer in Euroa.

In Midweek Pennant Division four had a convincing victory over Mooroopna Golf winning two rinks and drawing the third.

The win takes them to the top spot on the ladder.

Division one came up against an inform Shepparton Park combination and went down in all three rinks whilst Division five took on Violet Town and put up a strong showing in two rinks

– with a two shot win and a two shot loss - but were out bowled by the home side in the third.

Violet Town are to be commended for the work that has gone into upgrading their facilities and rekindling interest, and participation, in bowls.

Marg Goode, Mavis Bruce, Marion McMartin and Doug Morgan 19-17 Greg Blatchford, Ken Drysdale, Ray Day and James Dunn 09-28 Brian Diffey, Rolly Simpson, Gordon Grant and George Andrews 17-19 There were no social bowls due to the overnight rain but club championship matches continued on Thursday and Friday with some more great games.

In the battle of the Billie’s (Taylor and Sargood) Bill Sargood earned the title of William the Conqueror.

There were also another two Nifty 50 draws on Friday Night with Lance Carracher and Alex Grant collecting the cash and Scott Embling (who called the plumber?) winning the meat raffle.

Also on Thursday Margaretha Cerini and Charmaine Reid competed in sectionals for GV Region is the State Pairs and were successful on the day – a mighty effort.

They now compete in the knock-out stage on Thursday.

Things are also looking promising with regard to completion of the building works and it is highly likely that the Christmas Party, scheduled for December 10th, will be held in our Clubrooms.
