Following months of discussion and deliberation over whether the date was still appropriate due to its association with the invasion of First Nations People, councillors made a decision following a vote held at an extraordinary

During the meeting, an extensive engagement report was presented to councillors and several community members spoke to their submissions.

The community had previously been able to decide between two options through

an online submission.

Option one removed council’s formal support for celebrations on January 26 and option two continued the current arrangements.

One of the speakers in favour of option two suggested that Australia Day celebrations should be not only continued, but increased.

“I would urge Strathbogie Shire Council to ramp up the celebration of Australia Day,” he said.

“Celebrate what makes Australia the very best country in the world, our rich migrant and multicultural past and our cultural diversity.”

Another community member at the meeting spoke about why January 26 was a day that caused concern for many people across the country.

“It’s a celebration that deeply hurts people,” he said.

“It’s a bad day that lacks

inclusion and continues to isolate.

“We instead should look to celebrate a modified, inclusive day and celebrate the country in a better way.”

Based on a single vote per IP address, the results indicated that 46 per cent of respondents voted for option one and 54 per cent voted for option two.

Some 29 written submissions were also received.

Of these, 12 were in support of option one, six were in support of option two, and 11 provided alternative views or information.

An officer recommendation was put to council to note the community feedback received and to continue to celebrate January 26 in 2023 as per existing arrangements, acknowledging that some communities will choose not to undertake such events.

Hume Freeway intersection to benefit from safety improvements Paul Northey said the upgrades will significantly improve safety.

“We’ve listened to the Avenel community who use this intersection every day and these improvements will benefit thousands of motorists that use the road,” he said.

“A high number of trucks use the intersection to access the service station and rest area and these changes will make it safer for trucks entering and leaving that area.”

This section of the Hume Freeway is used by more than 12,000 vehicles each day, including about 3700 trucks.

In a further boost to safety, a safer speed limit of 80kph would be introduced to a small section (1.2km) of the Hume Free-

Back in 2020, state member for Euroa Steph Ryan spoke about the need for safety improvements at the intersection with members of the Avenel community.

“VicRoads cannot continue to ignore the safety issues at Avenel as the town’s population grows,” she said.

The safety improvements have been funded through the Australian and Victorian Governments’ joint Road Safety Program.

The program is aimed at reducing trauma on Victorian roads and creating jobs to support local economies.

IMPORTANT road safety improvements at a high-risk intersection on the Hume Freeway began last week, aiming to provide better and safer access to one of Strathbogie’s most popular tourist towns.

The Hume Freeway intersection at Avenel (Jones Street and Tarcombe Road) will undergo a series of upgrades, including improved line marking and signage, to make it easier for motorists travelling through the busy intersection.

Minor vegetation removal and road surface improvements will also be carried out along the road as well as the introduction of a safer speed limit to reduce the crash risk.

BUSINESS BREAKFAST: Community members, business owners and council representatives met for a discussion of the Shire’s Economic Development Strategy on Thursday morning.

By GUS RIDDER BUSINESSES and community members in the region were invited to the Seven Creeks Hotel in Euroa on Thursday morning to discuss the Strathbogie Shire’s Economic Development Strategy.

Over a one hour seated breakfast, attendees discussed thoughts and ideas for making a positive difference to the economic potential of the town.

Council was well represented at the breakfast with Mayor Laura Binks in attendance, along with several councillors, council chief executive Julie Salomon and director of community and planning Amanda Tingay.

Business owners, members of the chamber of commerce and interested community members helped make up the crowd of about 40 people.

The event was led by a consulting group working with council on the development strategy, Urban Enterprise.

The breakfast followed a similar event run by council in Nagambie the day before.

Throughout the event, discussion on a series of topics was held across the five tables, with each table then bringing forward their points to the wider group.

The topics of conversation included the attendees’

goals for the strategy, the comparative advantages that the region has, issues and barriers for economic growth, and opportunities for development.

Some of the goals brought up by the audience included creating more commercial spaces, a larger focus on recreation, improving the visitor experience and economy, supporting current establishments and growing new ones, keeping young people in town and highlighting the location and proximity to Melbourne.

When it came to what makes the shire unique and what provides the region’s comparative advantage, there were a number of different points raised.

These included the location, roads, agricultural production, rural economy, tourism capacity, the presence of unique townships across the shire each with something to offer, natural beauty, the forward thinking and welcoming community, diversity of business and lifestyle.

All those in attendance agreed upon the potential of the Strathbogie Shire to succeed economically, although the issues and barriers preventing further success were noted.

These shortcomings included the housing shortage (particularly when it comes to rental properties), digital and transport connectivity, power issues, poor telecommunications, State Government not doing enough for rural communities, and a lack of private sector support.

Cr Binks was pleased with the attendance during the breakfast and said that it would take the feedback into consideration.

“It was great to see so many businesspeople in attendance to provide input into the development of council’s Economic Development Strategy for the next four years,” she said.

“The strategy aims to encourage economic growth in the shire and will outline a clear economic focus for the key townships.

“It will show how we can continue to build our economy, while attracting and retaining jobs for current and future generations.

“Council’s aim is to create thriving townships that are strong, adaptable and sustainable.

“Following the input received at the workshops, council will release the draft strategy for review to ensure we’ve captured the community’s thinking.”

From page 1 In addition, the recommendation proposed to utilise an independent consultant to undertake a deliberative engagement process with participants for the community panel to be recruited by the consultant, reflecting the diversity of our community.

A motion was put forward by Cr Chris Raeburn, which removed the additional points to undertake deliberative engagement that were included in the recommendation.

Four councillors voted for the motion and three voted against, which resulted in council’s current role around January 26 to remain the same in 2023.

With the motion only keeping council’s involvement confirmed for 2023 and not the years after, this is a matter that could be addressed again in the future.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks thanked the community for their contributions during the engagement process which resulted in robust conversations around a complex issue.

“Council’s aim by opening up the conversation around traditional Australia Day celebrations was to be inclusive, respectful, and to recognise the significance of the day to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, in line with our Memorandum of Understanding with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council,” Cr Binks said.

“We understand the community has many opinions and thoughts as was reflected in the results of our engagement report.

“While council will not undertake any further engagement with the community for the commemorations of January 26 for 2023, we know conversations have begun and encourage discussions to continue to ensure our community members are well-informed.

“I wish to thank the community for its participation in the engagement process.”

Rental price rise among new Census data changes

By GUS RIDDER THE first wave of Census data from 2021 has been released, with the rise in rental prices in the Strathbogie Local Government Area (LGA) among the most notable results.

The median weekly rent price in the LGA now sits at $260, a sharp increase from last Census’ $190.

While this sits considerably below the state median of $370, the increase is still substantial.

This 31 per cent rise is disproportionate to the increase of weekly rental prices across the entire state, which saw a 15pc jump from $320 in 2016.

There were several other notable statistics shown throughout the data.

Median weekly income grew across the shire, rising from $546 to $653.

The 17.8pc growth was less than the 22pc seen across Victoria, which saw median incomes reach $803 per week.

The region also continues to have a significantly older population compared to the rest of

the state, with a median age of 53 compared to Victoria’s median of 38.

The age bracket with the most residents was those between 6064 years old, with 9.5pc of those surveyed being in this age group.

Data from the 2021 results also highlighted a sizable decrease in those that affiliate with

a particular religion.

Some 40.3pc of residents in the region now consider themselves as being affiliated with no religious group, compared to 31.7pc in 2016.

There were also percentage decreases across the major religions in the region.

The percentage of Catholics dropped from 23.2pc to 20.5pc, Anglicans fell from 15.9pc to 12.3pc, and the Uniting Church went from 7.2pc to 5.5pc.

Population data from the Census shows a slight increase in the region’s population too.

Some 11,455 people reside in the LGA, up from 10,274 in 2016.

Further information will continue to be released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, with additional location variables and employment date coming in October and the final complex topics being released in early to mid 2023.

Binney Street roadworks underway

By GUS RIDDER ROADWORKS along Binney Street in Euroa have continued as part of Strathbogie Shire Council’s Streetscape Renewal Program.

The works, which also have been occurring in Avenel and Longwood, plan to give a facelift to the areas as part of stage one of the program.

Funding for the program was confirmed in the 2020/21 budget.

The suggested upgrades were established through an engagement process with community members.

Proposed improvements included town entry features, street furniture, planting, pedestrian safety, public art, lighting and signage.

“The draft designs were for-

mulated based on initial community consultation which was undertaken in early 2021,” Cr Binks said.

“We then developed and took these draft designs back out to

our community for feedback via our online engagement platform Share Strathbogie.

“Council received lots of suggestions from residents on the draft designs and we were able to clearly understand what they wanted for the first stage to update the streetscapes of these three towns.

“These streetscape designs are an integral part of shaping a community’s identity and improving a sense of wellbeing and belonging.”

Not everyone in the community has been thrilled with the roadworks, as traffic, blocked off car parks and noise continued along the town’s main street last week.

Works for this program across the shire are expected to be finalised in late July.

Ryan not seeking re-election Euroa MP cites familyy as the reason to end her p political career

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa electorate’s first ever member, Steph Ryan, has announced that she will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming state election.

The National’s Party deputy leader made a statement explaining her decision on Tuesday morning.

“After a great deal of reflection, I have decided to step down as the Member for Euroa at the coming state election,” Ms Ryan said.

“With a little one at home and another on the way, it is time for me to seek a job that offers greater flexibility.

“Serving my community as the first member for Euroa has been the honour of a lifetime.

“The greatest pleasure of this job has been the opportunity it has afforded me to meet every day people doing extraordinary things.

“Thanks to the talent and ingenuity of the people who call it home, our region’s fu-

Most recently, Ms Ryan has served as the shadow minister for public transport and roads since February of this year.

Community Information Council votes on January 26 Council voted to maintain its current role in conducting ceremonies on January 26 at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday June 28, 2022.

The decision comes after Strathbogie Shire Council’s May Council Meeting when Council resolved to undertake community consultation on two different options relating to Council’s role on January 26.

Christmas decorations grants now open Our town’s main street and public spaces can be made even more merry this festive season thanks to Council’s new Christmas Decoration Grants program.

Strathbogie Shire community groups are being encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5000 to use for the purchase and installation of outdoor Christmas decorations.

Christmas decoration grants open for community groups STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has announced that grant applications for Christmas decorations are open, with plans for the program to make the shire’s main streets and public spaces even more merry this festive season.

Shire community groups are being encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5000 to use for the purchase and installation of outdoor Christmas decorations.

Grant applications opened on Friday, July 1and will be open until 5pm on Monday, August 1.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was important community groups came together to apply as one grant would be awarded to each township.

“It’s time for communi-

ties to put their heads together and come up with some great applications to enhance their public spaces and main streets with festive cheer,” Cr Binks said.

“Grants will be awarded for the purchase and installation of outdoor Christmas decorations such as lighting, Christmas trees, feature decorations, signage and banners and/ or decorations that provide sensory experiences.

“We encourage applications to consider the environment by selecting decorations that can be used again and ones that will also have minimal impact on the environment as applicants that do this will be given priority.”

Cr Binks said the grants were a great way to brighten townships and create

further outdoor activation which is something our communities have told us they are eager for.

“We have heard, through our community engagement, that activation of public spaces is something that is important to people,” she said.

“We are eager to see communities embrace this grant opportunity and we look forward to seeing the displays during the festive season which will no doubt bring a smile to people’s faces.”

MP Haines has say on staff cut moves

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN WANGARATTA-based Indi Independent federal MP Helen Haines is “incredibly disappointed” by Labor’s proposed staffing cuts to Independents’ staffing.

Dr Haines said she received a letter from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last month to halve her advisory staff members from four to two.

“This proposal by the Prime Minister is incredibly disappointing and is damaging for my ability to represent the people of Indi,” she said.

“I am in discussions with the government about the number of staff allocated to my office and I am working with my staff to support them in this uncertain time.”

and members from other parties such as One Nation and the United Australia Party have vented their frustrations, labelling the decision as an “attack on democracy”.

“This act, at the beginning of this new parliament and new government, has significantly damaged relationships with the crossbench,” the joint statement said.

In other Independent held electorates, advisory staff will be shortened to one, but because of the large size of the Indi electorate, the Prime Minister has proposed keeping Dr Haines’ advisory staff to two.

member representing a large rural electorate, my office includes five electorate staff and in the 46th Parliament included four adviser staff...they are members of our community, who care deeply about improving life in our region,” Dr Haines said.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on ABC Insiders last month that he recognised

the further pressures of not coming from a major party, but was surprised to see the number of staffing allowed to Independent crossbenchers compared to those from other parties.

“I don’t think it’s reasonable or fair for one backbench MP in one electorate to get twice as many staff as a backbench MP in the electorate next door,” he said.

IT seems Ronald M Lee (The Euroa Gazette, June 29) is not sure what to believe about climate change.

So he wants to leave the matter for now.

The laboratory that climate scientists use to measure changes in temperature is the earth itself, through core samples, ocean temperatures and global atmosphere readings over time and many places.

About 99 per cent of scientists concur on the issue of human-caused climate change, and that includes bodies such as our own

Bureau of Meteorology, NASA and the IPCC. The bureau says CO2 concentrations are at the highest levels seen on Earth in at least two million years.

Temperatures have risen across the globe already by one degree since 1850.

These are frightening figures in terms of the effect on ocean levels, and human and wild life.

If most of the firemen tell you your house is on fire, I think it best to act quickly rather than wait around to see if they have it wrong.

So much depends on the point.

A WORKSHOP was held last week at the council chamber in Euroa, providing community members in the region an opportunity to discuss climate change adaptation.

The workshop, facilitated

by Michael Spencer, included video links with experts in the United States and Hong Kong and brought up critical challenges in climate change governance.

Several council members were in attendance, including Strathbogie Shire Council May-

or Laura Binks as they hope to learn from and potentially implement some of the strategies discussed during the workshop.

The goal of the workshop was to identify good governance practices to adjust to the expected impacts of climate change and provide assistance on how to avoid harm and exploit beneficial opportunities.

Those attending were also able to look at the key governance challenges that occur from climate change and participated in a series of collaborative activities.

The workshops are another

step forward for council as they continue to work towards reducing the damage climate change can have on the social, economic, and environmental prosperity of the community.

Having declared a climate emergency in 2021, council has made the environment one of its clear priorities with a climate change action plan underway.

In May, Cr Binks discussed the importance of being proactive on the issue.

“The climate change science is undeniable, and we must act now to protect the future for the generations to come,” she said.

Recent reports from the Climate Council showed that the region was one of the most atrisk areas for climate change impact.

Indi was in the top ten most vulnerable electorates, with riverine flooding, bushfires and extreme wind having the potential to cause significant issues.

The workshop was presented by the Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network with support from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, the Strathbogie Shire, University of Melbourne and Monash Business School.

Skating, skiing on offer to shire’s young people TEENS in Strathbogie Shire have the chance to take part in an action-packed school holiday program this July.

Council will run two events at the Nagambie Active Youth Hub and skatepark with a variety of activities on offer for the shire’s young people.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the events were aimed at residents aged between 12-15 years, however younger

children were welcome to attend with a parent or guardian.

“We are hosting Get Inspired and Fun Day events which will feature games, art and filmmaking activities along with skating and park games,” Cr Binks said.

“Come and enjoy the awesome facilities at the Nagambie Active Youth Hub and join in the free fun.

“There will be sausage sizzles provided.”

The events are being presented

by Valley Sport and Strathbogie Shire Engage Programs.

Strathbogie youth aged 12-18 years are also invited to attend a Mt Buller Snow Trip during the school holidays.

Cr Binks said the bus trip and toboggans would be provided free of charge and attendees were required to cover the cost of snacks, ski and snowboard hire and lift ticket for those who want to take to the slopes.

• Mt Buller Snow Trip: Tuesday, July 5 departing Euroa 7.30am, returning 6pm.

Winter wonderland events break the ice in shire THE lead up to the school holidays in Strathbogie Shire had hundreds of families enjoy the hugely successful Winter Wonderland events in Nagambie and Euroa.

The events featured ice skating, virtual reality, live music, cosy seating, games, delicious treats and snow.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was incredible to see the ice-skating timeslots at both events fill up.

“The ice-skating spots filled up so quickly that we decided to extend the hours on both Saturdays until 7pm,” Cr Binks said.

“It was magical to see the events lit up after dark and we are so happy that the activities on offer were so popular among our community.”

WINTER EVENTS SUCCESS: The ice-skating proved to be an exciting attraction over the two events, drawing big crowds of all ages to participate.

Cr Binks said the locations provided the perfect settings with the Nagambie event held overlooking the lake, while the Euroa event was in the main street in the former Gamble’s Nursery site.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to GoNagambie and the Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce for their support to help run these amazing family-friendly events,” she said.

“And a huge thank you must go to Bill and Helen Stubbs for kindly allowing the Euroa event to be held on their land.”

The Winter Wonderland event was just one of many exciting events aimed at Strathbogie Shire’s young people.

Tree planting for Platinum Jubilee MORE than $90,000 will flow to Indi for the planting of trees across the electorate to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Indi independent MP Helen Haines has announced.

Dr Haines congratulated the nine successful groups from across Indi on receiving the federal funding.

“These projects are unique and will improve towns across Indi, both environmentally and visually,” she said.

“Increasing tree cover is good for local wildlife and for keeping us cooler in the warm summer months.

“Planting trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will leave a lasting reminder of the significant length of service of Her Royal Highness for decades to come.”

The Tablelands Community Centre in Ruffy and the Terip Terip Recreation Ground will also see new trees planted as part of the Tablelands Community Centre’s Canopies for Koalas project.

The planting ceremony will include a workshop on how to successfully plant advanced trees and tube stock.

In Wodonga 700 trees will be planted by the Wodonga Urban Landcare Network, along waterways, in parks, and public land.

About five hectares of land will be treated for woody weeds as part of the process and a commemorative entrance gateway with signage will be constructed to honour

the Queen’s 70 years of service.

Yarrunga Primary School in Wangaratta will plant mature Eucalyptus Caesia or ‘Silver Princess’ gumtrees as part of the Our Silver Space project, with the trees to feature in the front garden and along the streetscape and facade of the school.

The Benalla Lions Club has been awarded $2500 to plant trees in the memorial garden, with Australian natives to be added to the existing floral establishment.

The Mansfield Agricultural and Pastoral Society has been awarded $15,000 for succession planning for old elm trees around the showgrounds, and to plant more standalone trees around the arenas to provide shade.

The entrances to the township of Alexandra will be enhanced with the planting of new trees under a successful project

by Alexandra and District Open Gardens.

In Dederang, trees will be planted along the highway beside the Dederang Recreation Reserve, with older members of the community to be encouraged to take part.

The Upper Murray Landcare Network will plant trees at four sites across the Upper Murray, with students from Corryong College to take part in the planting.

The large geographic area will allow many people from across the area to get involved.

TREES FOR THE QUEEN: Indi independent MP Helen Haines has announced that the region will receive $90,000 to plant trees ahead of the Platinum Jubilee.

Tawonga Primary School will plant two trees as part of their education program about the momentous occasion of the Queen’s Jubilee.

The ‘Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee’ Program is supporting eligible groups and organisations to honour The Queen and the legacy of her achievements during the year of her Jubilee through community-based commemorative tree planting events.

Planting regionally appropriate species that enhance the tree canopy will also leave a legacy of its own—in the form of trees flourishing across the nation for Australians to enjoy into the future.

The program provides each federal electorate up to $100,000 in grants for up to ten projects nominated by the local federal member of parliament, in consultation with their local community.

Grants range from $2500 to $20,000 per project.

The Australian program complements the ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ initiative in the United Kingdom and other similar programs across the Commonwealth.

Victoria unveils gas phase-out plan VICTORIA will end incentives for residential gas products by the end of next year as it encourages residents to embrace sustainable alternatives amid a national energy crisis.

The State Government said new incentives were being developed to help the two million people who used gas at home or in their businesses shift to other energy sources.

A roadmap released on Saturday outlined a plan involving electrification and improved energy efficiency and the use of hydrogen and biomethane to help reduce bills and cut carbon emissions.

Existing incentives for all

residential gas products will be phased out by the end of 2023.

The government said the campaign was part of its plan to drive down the cost of living and halve emissions by 2030.

Gas and electricity prices spiked last month leading to an unprecedented suspension of the national energy market by regulator the Australian Energy Market Operator amid coal-fired power station shutdowns, cold snaps across the east coast and global gas shortages.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said gas was no longer the cheap fuel it once

was while renewables were the most affordable source of energy.

“Victorians have been at the mercy of private gas companies for too long, it’s time to put gas on the back-burner as we help Victorians cut energy bills and halve emissions by 2030,” she said.

Victorians use more gas in their homes and businesses than people in any other state or territory and the fossil fuel contributes around 17 per cent to the state’s net greenhouse gas emissions.

The government plans to remove barriers to all-electric homes and new developments

by eliminating the current planning scheme requirement for new developments to be connected to gas.

It will also offer rebates to owners of existing homes to replace gas hot water systems or ducted heating systems.

The roadmap states that allelectric new homes with solar panels, for example, could save Victorians thousands of dollars each year on their bills.

But environmental campaigners criticised the roadmap for lacking clear goals and timelines for the shift away from fossil fuels.

Environment Victoria chief executive Jono La Nauze said

residents expected more decisive plans to shift to 100 per cent renewable energy.

“Nobody expects us to get off gas tomorrow but without a clear roadmap we risk repeating the chaotic and costly coal exit we are all enduring today,” he said.

Freja Leonard from Friends of the Earth Melbourne said the roadmap was a step in the right direction but more needed to be done.

“At a time when Victorians are paying twice as much for gas as we did last year and the world is feeling the impacts of climate change we need to stop a single new gas connec-

tion being made and support Victorian homes and businesses to rapidly move to an all-electric, post gas energy system,” she said.

Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association acting chief executive Damian Dwyer warned the plan would push consumers onto coal.

“In Victoria, more than 60 per cent of electricity is still generated using higher emissions brown coal, and as has been made abundantly clear in the last month, renewables are simply not yet at high enough penetration to shoulder the load,” he said. - AAP

Thousands march after US abortion shift THE blow dealt by the US Supreme Court limiting access to safe abortions shone a light on state regulations in Australia, as protesters took to the streets in solidarity.

Thousands of pro-choice advocates marched in Melbourne and Sydney on Saturday, and in Brisbane and Adelaide on Friday, demanding free abortions and more accessibility to health services for women and pregnant people.

Event organiser and MSI Australia managing director, Jamal Hakim, estimated that up to 10,000 protesters showed their support in Melbourne.

“Melbourne really showed out with the weather and with people as well. There was so much passion and solidarity,” Mr Hakim said.

“It was really terrific to see so many people, the State Library was full and Swanston Street was full all the way down.

“It just shows how this topic brings people together, because it’s about the bodily autonomy of women and pregnant people and it really comes to the core of healthcare rights as well.”

Support for eating disorders EATING disorder recovery advocates are hopeful an initiative to offer a suite of treatment options in a single register will boost support, particularly in regional areas.

A national directory of eating disorder clinicians called connect*ed has been launched to help Australians who struggle with conditions like anorexia to get treatment faster.

NSW student Sophie Macansh, 24, was just 14 when she developed anorexia, and she struggled to

get the right help for years while living in the small town of Deepwater.

She said people in regional areas have fewer treatment options and their location can often become a barrier to getting better.

“It was tough,” Ms Macansh said.

“There’s no one, no psychologists or dieticians in small rural towns - and even if you are fortunate enough to have one, it’s very rare that they have experience treating eating disorders.”

Kevin Rudd joins Ukraine international advisory group FORMER Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd has joined an international advisory group set up by the president of Ukraine to look at ways to prevent future Russian aggression.

The ‘who’s who’ group of ex-government foreign policy specialists held its first meeting earlier this month after being established by Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy in May. The group hopes to create security guarantees

to avoid a repeat of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including by boosting preemptive diplomatic powers to ward off an attack.

“I hope this working group’s recommendations will support Ukraine’s legitimate desire to rebuild as a strong, free and sovereign country pursuing its own destiny,” Mr Rudd said in a statement on his website.

“Ukrainians are rightly focused on winning this war.”

Awards night for Riggs Creek brigade RIGGS Creek CFA members celebrated an awards night on Friday, June 24 at the Violet Town Football Netball Clubrooms.

It was a night to recognise the service of some of their members and their commitment to the safety of the Riggs Creek community and beyond.

District 22’s CFA acting assistant chief officer Peter Dedman and CFA board member Dawn Hartog were on hand to present the awards including a special award for one of their members, Lyndal Dean.

Ms Dean was the first ever recipient of the National Medal for the brigade.

Captain David Sessions recommended her for the award due to the continued efforts and commitment she has made to the community and the local brigade.

“Lyndal is the backbone of the brigade,” he said.

“She has done an extraordinary amount of work for both the brigade and the Riggs Creek community,” he said.

Trout stocked across region FAMILIES and children can look forward to casting a line these school holidays - with thousands of fish stocked into waters across north east Victoria.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced almost 9000 catchable sized rainbow trout have now been stocked into 20 lakes across the region.

“Stocking our waters with rainbow trout provides the perfect opportunity for families and kids to get outdoors and try their luck casting a line these school holidays,” she said.

“Rainbow trout are ideal for fishers of all ages and skill levels as they’re relatively easy to catch - making it a great day out on the water.”

The stockings have been funded by recreational fishing licence fees and form part of the State Government’s $35 million Go Fishing Victoria plan to get more people fishing, more often.

Rainbow trout are a great stocking option for children and beginners because they’re easy to catch and take a variety of baits and lures.

Stocked lakes also feature fishing platforms, bankside tracks and picnic areas which create safe and convenient access for families to give fishing a go.

I HAVE been around cars for a long time.

Perhaps, after a while I became complacent, and it took something really outstanding for me to get excited about.

But the “wow” factor kicked in when I first saw a magnificent 2002 Toyota Crown that had been restored by Justin Read.

The Crown is a luxury Japanese car, aimed at competing in the executive market with the likes of Mercedes Benz and BMW. Justin Read gave some insight about the car.

“This is my 2002 Toyota Crown Athlete V,” he said. “ It’s powered by the 1JZ-GTE, a turbocharged, 2.5 litre, inline 6 engine making 206 kilowatts and 378 Nm of torque, a figure in-line with the ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ of Japanese auto manufacturers that stood between the late 1980’s to early 2000’s.

“Drive is delivered to the rear wheels through the 4 speed Tiptronic A340E transmission.

“This is the 11th generation of the Toyota Crown and was inproduction from 1999 to 2003 for the sedan variant, production of the wagon continued until 2007.”

Justin took delivery of the car in October of 2020, after having it imported from Japan out of the USS Shizuoka Auctions.

It arrived very dirty, with the paint and exterior trims in serious need of some TLC. He began the process of replacing aged engine components that looked like they had not been touched since the car rolled off the assembly line.

THE CROWN: The Euroa Show and Shine team has invited Justin Read to show off his luxury Japanese car, which has been repaired following a break-in attempt.

This involved sourcing a new set of headlights to replace the faded, yellow ones that were on the car, and replacing several interior trim components that were showing signs of wear and tear.

Next up was a set of Shockworks coilovers to replace the original suspension struts that were starting to sag.

Justin then purchased a set of Work Meister M1 3-piece wheels, with more aggressive specifications in order to fill out the wheel wells a bit more than the original “Eurolines” were.

He then had the car professionally paint corrected and ceramic coated.

The color is paint code 202 “Black Onyx” “The result was fantastic,” Justin said.

“The paint had come up nearly flawless and I finally had the car in a place that I was happy with aesthetically.”

That lasted a total of just four weeks before all going down the drain.

Justin had parked the car in

the morning and gone to work for the day.

After finishing work and walking back to the car, he found that someone had broken into it.

The car was a disaster area!

The rear quarter window on the driver’s side had been smashed, the key barrel broken in half and the dashboard had been ripped apart in order to gain access to the ignition wiring.

It appeared the would-be thieves had attempted to hot wire the car so that it could be stolen. Luckily, that wasn’t the case, the immobilizer used in these cars is essentially fool proof and prevented it being started.

“The end result was a rolling paperweight, because the key barrel had been destroyed, the car couldn’t be started,” Justin said.

“After going back and forth with my insurance company, the car was ruled a total loss.

“I was told that the parts to fix my car were too hard to source and therefore would not be repairable.

“I chose to buy back the car as

salvage and decided to give the repair work a go myself.

“After a few months of searching, I found another black Crown that had been written off in a rear end collision out in Geelong.

“I made the trip down after work one Friday night and managed to source all of the parts I needed to fix mine.

“I spent the next few weekends pulling out all the damaged components from my car and swapping in the new parts, translating Japanese wiring diagrams to repair the mangled ignition wiring and replacing the complete rear driver’s side door, as the rear quarter windows were no longer in production.”

That’s the story of Justin’s car up until this point.

He says that from here on, the Crown will be reserved just for weekend duties and car meets.

No more driving it to work!

“My ultimate goal for the car is to modify it to what I consider an “OEM Plus” stage,” he said.

“I’d like to get the car to around the 300-kilowatt mark with a bigger turbo.

“Install a shift kit in the transmission to make it a bit more responsive.

“Being a luxury car, the shifts are smooth, but quite lazy.

“Perhaps install some bigger brakes and fit up adjustable suspension arms to replace the fairly basic suspension setup that these cars came with.

“Once all that work is done, I’ll consider the car “finished” and then hang onto it forever!”

Needless to say, we have invited Justin to bring the Crown along to the Australian National Show and Shine in Euroa on Sunday, October 2.

Chetcuti, author of vegan cookbook visiting Euroa BETTY Chetcuti, author of ‘My Vegan Cookbook’, will be in Euroa this month to visit the library and discuss her book with interested attendees.

Betty will be at the Euroa Library at 12pm on Thursday, July 14 before heading to Shepparton on the same day at 6pm.

A light meal will be provided at the library, making it an ideal opportunity for lunch while listening to an author share her experience of publishing a cookbook.

Ms Chetcuti is a psychologist and mother of three, and has just released her new book.

Betty suggested some key principals, providing readers with easy-to-access information that will help them take small steps towards making food choices that work for them.

Betty’s book provides not just recipes; it supplies the reader with health and well-being information, protein and iron requirements, meal plans, references to further develop knowledge and an understanding of how psychology influ-

ences our eating.

There are over 150 recipes from around the world, ranging from French toast to Maltese Hobz Zeit.

There are meals and snacks to keep you full and nourished.

The book is a story of doing your best and learning how to feel confident with food, and adapting your eating habits to what feels right for you.

“How did one conversation in a café lead to my decision to become vegan?” Ms Chetcuti said.

“I am a psychologist, a mum of three, of Maltese heritage and I love cooking.

“My book is about your health with plant-based recipes to satisfy, nourish, heal and nurture.

Project aims to boost Friendlies

THE Friendlies Oval is one of many locations set to benefit from the Greening Euroa project, an ambitious, community driven proposal to use recycled water to irrigate public green spaces.

The campaign to receive funding for this project continues as the Greening Euroa committee requires $3.8 million of Federal and State Government grants for its implementation and construction.

The funds will allow wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water’s treatment plant to be upgraded from Class C to Class B and piped underground to storage tanks throughout town.

From here it will be available for pumping onto the many public ovals, schools and sports grounds in the community, irrigating public green spaces across Euroa during the summer months.

The cost-efficient and climate smart project is also expected to have a significant benefit on the aesthetics of the town’s public spaces.

One group that has been heavily involved in the project from its infancy is the

Friendlies Oval Committee, represented by Peter Morley.

Mr Morley spoke about Greening Euroa and the moment he knew it was something to get behind.

“We’ve seen what happens with ten-year droughts in the region,” he said.

“If the resources are there and we can do something about it, and beautify the town while we’re at it, it will make people feel better.

“The entrances to the town need to be beautified to attract people to the town.

“It’s a project that’s a lot to do with climate change and sustainability but it will also just make the town look better.

“It’s just going to make Euroa feel, and look, like a much better place.”

This sentiment was echoed by Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks in an initial discussion of the project.

“During the past three years our committee has investigated the possibility of using recycled water to irrigate our public green spaces during our dry summer months,” she said.

“We know having green spaces in times of drought is increasingly important to our community.

“It is essential to community health and wellbeing.

TO make this project a reality, the committee needs to secure $3.8 million in funding from state and federal government grants in water infrastructure and innovation sectors, or the equivalent in a co-contribution agreement.

“Our challenge was to find a way of creating green spaces in a sustainable way.

The benefits for the Friendlies and its neighbouring tennis facilities will be significant if the project goes ahead according to Mr Morley.

“We won’t have to worry

about water for our facilities in the summer months,” he said.

“It’ll also help conserve our existing water supply.

“In this case it will beautify the town and protect the resources we have.

“Our ovals and grounds will look great with a more constant supply and keep us secure with the resources

needed to keep the grounds in an excellent condition.”

Mr Morley recognised the need for outside funding to reach the $3.8 million goal.

“The major source of funds has to come from the shire and government grants,” he said.

“We can do community fundraising to help get some infrastructure together for the schools and other groups that may not have that yet but we need to get broader funding for the project.”

Cr Binks gave insight into the fundraising process and called on the community to share their views on the project with the aim of gathering wider attention.

“We’re advocating to State and Federal Governments for the funding, but we’re also asking the community to join our campaign and help spread the message,” she said.

“You can share your social media posts, send a letter of support, it’s easy to get involved and we urge you to visit our website to find out more.”

Mr Morley spoke glowingly about the Greening Euroa committee, their meetings and the involvement of council in creating a real buzz about the project.

“They’re doing a really good job,” he said.

“All the representatives

in the committee are really keen to get this going, we understand the benefits it could bring.

“Talks have been really positive, everyone’s really upfront and it makes it really encouraging.

“Things are being done efficiently.”

The Greening Euroa committee is currently made up of committed stakeholders across Euroa including Strathbogie Shire Council, Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Euroa Secondary College, Euroa Primary School, St. Johns Primary School, Euroa Arboretum, Memorial Oval Committee of Management, Friendlies Oval Committee of Management, Euroa Croquet Club, Euroa Lawn Tennis Club and Euroa Agricultural Society.

Cr Binks spoke about the committee and their involvement in the project recently.

“The Greening Euroa Project is being driven by a committee of passionate locals who came together to find a way to lessen the impacts of chronic water shortages in a rapidly warming climate,” she said.

• The deduction must be directly related to your income.

• You must be able to substantiate the deduction.

It is important to focus on records to keep for deductions.

Records are usually a receipt from the supplier and must show;

• The name of the supplier.

• The cost and nature of the expense.

• The date the expense was paid.

In some circumstances a receipt may not be needed, but you need to show you have spent the money and how the work claim has been calculated.

For example, claiming phone and internet work use; If the claim is incidental and the total amount claimed is $50 or less, then your claim can be calculated based on:

• 25 cents for each work call made from a landline.

• 75 cents for each work call made from a mobile phone.

• 10 cents for each work text sent.

If the claim is more than $50, you must: Keep all phone and internet bills for the year.

• Keep all phone and internet bills for the year.

• Show how much is related to work use.

For itemised bills, highlight all work related calls in a representative four week period.

This can then be applied to the full year to determine the work related percentage.

For the internet use, you need to keep a diary covering a representative four week period showing how often you and other household members use the internet for both work and personal purposes.

For a bundled plan, you need to apportion the total cost of the plan between the services covered, before determining the work related use for each service.

The Australian Government First Home Super Saver (FHSS) Scheme allows eligible Australians to save for their first home.

You can apply to your superfund to release up to $15,000 of additional contributions per year up to a maximum of $50,000.

How does this help a young person?

If a young person on a salary of $90,000 pa were to salary sacrifice $100 per week it would reduce their take home pay by $65.50 per week whilst creating $85 of saving ($100 less 15% superannuation tax) in their super account.

Another way of creating savings is to make a before or after-tax lump sum contribution (within allowable contribution limits).

When they are ready to buy their first home, they can apply to the ATO to release their savings plus a deemed earnings amount.

Once earnings are released you have 12 months to sign a contract to purchase or construct a home.

The home must be for residential purposes and you must live in the home you are buying for at least 6 months within the first 12 months you own it.

If you change your mind about buying your first home the amount you’ve saved will remain in your super account and go towards your retirement savings.

As always, with all things super, it is best to get specific financial advice before entering into any strategy.

THE Victorian Government’s $250 Power Saving Bonus program for all Victorian households is now available.

This program will provide a one-off payment for Victorian households to ease cost-of-living pressures and encourage Victorians to compare their household energy prices and save money.

From Friday, July 1 you could have access to the new $250 program by visiting the Victorian Energy Compare website and submitting an application.

The new $250 program builds on the success of the 2018-20 $50 bonuses for households and the 2021-22 $250 bonuses for concession recipients.

These programs provided over a $110 million to more than 850,000 Victorian households.

To be eligible for the new power saving bonus, Victorian households will need to have a recent residential electricity bill and be the account holder for that bill.

Households will also be required to visit the Victorian Energy Compare website or engage with an energy affordability service through one of the participating community outreach partners.

The Victorian Energy Compare website is labelled as the only free and independent online energy price comparison service to Victorian energy consumers.

Heritage talks for Kirwans Bridge STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has engaged specialised consultants to support a case to present to Heritage Victoria on the future of Kirwans Bridge.

The consultants, who have experience with timber bridges, supported council to present options for the bridge’s future heritage to the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel who are engaging with council throughout the process.

The information provided by the consultants is being utilised in an engineering brief which is required to support any future actions that are approved by Heritage Victoria.

Over the past year, the community panel, made up of 10 passionate members, has considered many aspects associated with the bridge.

Various options have been discussed such as if the bridge should remain and how this could work, or if a new bridge should be instated for motorists, leaving the heritage bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The panel has also considered maintenance costs associated with the option of instating a second bridge for motorists.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said having input from the dedicated community panel that have ‘lived experiences’ with the bridge was important.

“The panel members understand how important it is to develop a case for each of the options presented,” Cr Binks said.

“At our June council meeting we allocated $100,000 for the investigation and necessary reports in order to make a presentation to Heritage Victoria.”

Community member Darren Lyons, Kirwans Bridge Community Panel chairman, said the panel considered the options which are being investigated by the engineering brief.

“While the process is quite time consuming, this means that we will end up with the best outcome for our community in the end,” he said.

TALKS UNDERWAY: Specialist heritage consultants have been brought into to discuss the future of Kirwans Bridge and assist with any proposals to Heritage Victoria.

A full engineering investigation report is required before any decisions on the future of the bridge can be completed and then presented along with the heritage implications to Heritage Victoria.

“Compiling the report will take around 12 months so we are reminding the community that the current speed and tare limits remain in place on Kirwans Bridge,” Cr Binks said.

The afternoon tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council was very well attended but where were all the chaps of our district?

Congratulations to Pam Ellis for her 25 years of making this event happen in VT and thanks to everyone else who helps her out including Community House.

A Cancer Council volunteer pointed out that they offer a free support service to country folk who may need hospitalisation for cancer treatment, and many people are not using it.

The support includes not only hospital visits but also more diverse activities such as financial counselling and free legal services (if you need time off from your work, for example).

Judy Wills, in concert with the VTAG Secretary, has had a big win with the Shire agreeing to fund a set of ‘platypus steps’ for the Violet Town pool in its 2022/23 aquatic budget.

These steps which go over the edge of the pool allow people with more limited mobility to be able to access the pool.

The shire plans to install the steps before the pool reopens in December.

Another step (ha ha) in keeping the VT pool the best in the shire.

The Violet Town Hall Committee really needs a new secretary as their previous one had to step down due to other commitments.

I’m told that the job is not very onerous - basically taking minutes at the monthly meeting.

Ian has been in charge since the shed was in the old Scout hall on the corner of Baird and Hurt streets.

He was instrumental in getting money for a new shed and his efforts resulted in the new building at Shadforth Reserve that is the envy of a lot of shedders.

In recognition of his contribution the committee decided to officially name the shed’s tea room in his honour.

Jeff Jennings is the new VTMS president.

A good crowd turned up last weekend to congratulate Tim Ross on his 300th game for the Towners.

Tim had a banner and an honour guard and his children helped him celebrate; he even kicked a goal.

Fine effort.

LAST week, members of the Violet Town community held a ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

On Wednesday, June 22 approximately 60 attendees joined together to raise funds for the Cancer Council and recognise some of the fantastic volunteers in the town during a morning tea.

These volunteers include Carol Smith who has spent 20 years of representing the Cancer Council and volunteering, and the locally beloved Pam Ellis who has been running the Biggest Morning Tea in Violet Town for the past 25 years.

The morning tea raised close to $1400 thanks to the kind contributions of the local community and all those who attended.

Pam was congratulated and given a gift from the community in appreciation for her ongoing efforts.

The Biggest Morning Tea is held every year across communities in Australia, with nearly 20,000 morning tea hosts registered on the Cancer Council’s website.

Over $9 million have been raised so far across the country from this fantastic initiative.

Money raised from the morning teas are directed towards research, support and prevention of cancer across Australia.

MEMORIES OF ELVIS: My mother and I were Elvis Presley fans.

Mum died on 17 August 1976 and Elvis on 16 August 1977. One year later.

I was in bed sick from having my tonsils out (aged 29) and heard on the radio of Elvis’s death.

In April this year John and I stayed in Parkes, the Elvis Festival town in NSW on our way back from Queensland. We stayed in the Gracelands hotel, had an Elvis burger, and saw the Elvis museum there.

Then on Tuesday, 28 June, for my birthday John and friend Marlene went to the Bendigo Art Gallery to see the Elvis exhibition Direct from Gracelands.

It was fabulous. We spent two hours going around the 10 rooms in which the displays were set up.

They had everything from his Bible, childhood, teenage and adult memorabilia, photos from his early age, his beautiful costumes and capes he wore in shows, his soldiers uniforms, a red MG car, a Harley Davidson motor bike, his wedding suit and Priscilla’s’ gown and veil.

There were also lots of items that he would have used during his short life. They had large screens showing his shows on stage, interviews, and wedding and some family videos. It was very extensive. I enjoyed reading all the history of the periods of his early life; when he became a rock and roll star from the age of 22; buying Graceland, his devotion to his mum, his family, and lots more details. It was all on show. But you also saw the lonely life he was forced to live because of his fame.

If the Euroa community cinema obtains the movie “Elvis” to screen I will be one of the fans to book a ticket to see it.

MAINTENANCE WORKS ON WATER TOWER: Maintenance works are underway on the water tower to help preserve the almost century old building.

Safety fencing has been installed around the site and the maintenance could take some weeks to complete. This will include specialists inspecting the concrete mortar, to see if any repairs need doing. Telstra may need to turn off their telecommunications set up at the top to ensure safety while works are underway.

Shocked Lolesio rides Wallabies high NOAH Lolesio aims to further repay coach Dave Rennie’s faith after his rollercoaster rugby career hit another high in the 14man Wallabies’ breakthrough first Test win over England The 22-year-old playmaker was a last-minute inclusion in the starting side when playmaker Quade Cooper injured his calf during the warm-up at Perth Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

Lolesio says it may have worked in his favour, with little time to get nervous about the magnitude of his task as Australia strove to end an eight-game losing streak against the old foe.

After a shaky start with more injuries and a red card for lock Darcy Swain rocking the Wallabies, the five-eighth helped straighten up the attack to steer the side to a heroic 30-28 victory to open the three-Test series,

heaping more pressure on England coach Eddie Jones.

His goal-kicking proved decisive, booting six from six for a personal haul of 15 points.

“I felt a lot more relaxed before I was told I was going to start which helped,” Lolesio said on Sunday as the team prepared to fly to Brisbane for game two on Saturday.

“I was pretty shocked when Rens (Rennie) gave me the tap of the shoulder saying that I was starting.

“It’s unfortunate for Quade, I know that would have been a tough call for him.

“I just grabbed it by the horns and tried to do my best for the team and it took me a while to find my groove in the game, but I’m just happy we got that win.”

Lolesio was left shattered last month when a poorly-timed

drop kick in the dying minutes was charged down, leaving the Brumbies just short in their Super Rugby Pacific semi-final against the Blues.

With nine Tests now under his belt, he was delighted to stand up in the big moments at Optus Stadium, rating it as a career highlight.

“I feel like I’m learning every game - I’m still so early in my career,” he said.

“But I never want to be complacent and I always want to be willing to learn.

“Obviously that semi-final sucked and my professional rugby career has been a rollercoaster and it’s pleasing...as a bright side.”

Lolesio said it was also “pleasing” that Rennie backed him to step up in place of Cooper, ahead of veteran James O’Connor, who came onto the bench.

“I’m just very privileged that that he backs me but in saying that I’ve got to put the work in too.

“I can take confidence out of that but at the same time I won’t be complacent because I know I’ve got to be a lot better, especially in that first half to put the team in a better position.”

Cooper will undergo scans in Brisbane on Monday but was still limping on Sunday and looks unlikely to play in the Suncorp Test encounter.

The Wallabies allowed two late tries in the final three minutes which flattered the visitors and Lolesio said the end didn’t sit well with his team.

“We were definitely disappointed with how we let those late two tries in because the scoreboard would have looked a lot a lot nicer so we will look at that defensively and we’ll be better.”

Scott wants Cats to relish clash COACH Chris Scott wants Geelong to embrace the hype and the occasion ahead of their AFL blockbuster against Melbourne.

The second-placed Cats will host the top side on Thursday night at GMHBA Stadium.

“It’s a privilege to be involved in these big games where there’s pressure and expectation,” Scott said.

“The town on Thursday night will be out of control.

Everything’s sold, it will just be absolutely pumping and it’s just great to be involved in those games.”

Scott said these sorts of

game are excellence practice for the business end of the season.

“But it’s (also) a reflection that we’ve been able to hang in there enough this year, to be in a position where we’re considered one of the contenders against the best team in the comp,” he said.

“We should run towards that pressure and embrace it.

“How lucky am I to be at Geelong.”

Adding to the narrative, Melbourne came back from 44 points down to beat the Cats at the same venue last season and snatch the minor

premiership from them.

It proved a critical moment as the Demons went on to break their 57-year premiership drought.

Scott said it was pointless to dwell on that sliding doors moment.

“I’m such a look-forward kind of guy,” he said.

Ross dominates in milestone match KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN SENIORS A BIG crowd greeted Tim Ross for game 300 on Saturday against Girgarre, a guard of honour and banner, walking out with his three children; this was his day.

The club and players delivered in spades as he did too, controlling the backline and then finally let loose into the forward line late in the last quarter to mark and goal.

The crowd erupted; players came from all parts of

the ground to celebrate.

Fair day too, 22 possessions, six tackles and that goal, 350 beckons.

Ten goals from Jack Exell who continues to basically excel, he delivered a few off that he could’ve kicked but as the team man he picks the best option.

The “Raging Bull” Ollie Ford was clearly best, 33 possessions an incredible 22 contested, this maestro tore the hearts out of the opposition with his dominance around clearances, a specky just gave his day a bit of candy on top.

ON THE WAY: Matt McCarty makes a break for it out of a sticky situation.

Jimmy Herring is hopefully going to catch Tim Ross in games, it would set the foundations for years to come, absurdly brilliant, playing on a former GVFL star he obliterated him, 29 touches, an incredible 34 bounces during the game he has had an astounding year and plays a big part in the team’s success.

In a tight game that saw the home side lead at quarter time by nine points, then 36 points at the half the Towners could never put the Kangaroos away until a dominant last quarter

Violet Town fight to the finish KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN A GRADE VIOLET TOWN were keen to go out strong from the start and continue on with the form they previously found the last couple of weeks, but they didn’t have their own way.

Girgarre were tight in defence and put the pressure on Violet Town, forcing them to make some errors.

The Towners were not playing at their best at all with several bad passes all the way down the court, allowing Girgarre to stay in the game.

In the third quarter Girgarre came out fighting from the half time break and lifted their intensity, which helped them win the quarter and make the last quarter an interesting one with the Towners only up by one at three quarter time.

Violet Town weren’t going to let this game slip, they dug deep and composed themselves to win the match by five.

Both teams in the first half fought hard and were evenly matched, but Girgarre were able to pull away in the later stages of the second quarter.

Violet Town began the second half like they started the first, with two early goals.

They continued to play strong consistent netball, but it wasn’t enough with Girgarre’s defenders sticking tight in defence making it difficult for Violet Town to score.

With some slight changes made but Girgarre, they came out fighting and Violet Town fought hard to gain the momentum back but, Girgarre kept their composure and finished the quarter in front. Violet Town continued to work hard in defence and attacking in the second half, finishing off the game strong, winning the last quarter but it was too late, with the margin nine at the final whistle.

13 & UNDER THE game started with the ball going up and down the court with neither side able to take advantage of the intercepts they were creating.

The defenders continued to work tirelessly, putting the pressure on, coming up with some fantastic intercepts and deflections.

Violet Town were finally rewarded in the last quarter for the fantastic passages of play with their first and only goal.

Longwood netballers leave it all on the court against Stanhope KDFNL NETBALL LONGWOOD A GRADE A GRADE played an intense game against Stanhope this week, keeping a very competitive score for the first three quarters.

Good use of our defensive zone strategies in the midcourt helped us to create turnover opportunities, and although we didn’t take the win, we were happy with our efforts and competitiveness in this match up.

Best on to the relentless defensive pressure of GD Brooke Bennett, coaches award to the determined high intensity of C Tamee Quinlan.

B GRADE

MORE injuries from last round saw the Redlegs with a bare seven for B Grade this week. Big thanks to young gun Summah for helping us as well as Gail & Michelle stepping up from C to allow us a bench.

Unfortunately the girls got off to a tough start, with a goalless first quarter allowing Stanhope to get off to a 14 goal lead.

Although suffering our biggest loss this season, the fight was there and the girls were able to show some great passages of play and ran the game out with heads high, giving everything they could.

BOC Larni Shiner Coaches Award Meg Ritchie C GRADE THIS week we had girls out sick and injured so we were down to a bare six, with the help from our juniors thanks Millie Delahey, Cassie Rawlings and Bethany Pellegrino for stepping up and helping us out.

We fought hard and stayed positive, the defense were giving 110% like usual getting rebounds and lots of hands to balls, but we just couldn’t quite convert that onto the score board.

UNDER 17 THE under 17s played a hard game on the weekend but they didn’t give up.

With injuries happening left right and centre they kept their heads up.

Best on court went to someone that continued to raise everyone else’s heads and have fun in the process and that Ashlee McWilliam, and coaches went to a girl that runs and runs and runs and never stops, and just continues to keep going the whole game and that’s Natarsha Ebert.

UNDER 15 THE under 15s had a tough

day against a strong opponent.

We had four under 13s girls step up and all take the court at some point through the game so we’re extremely thankful for Allira, Maddison, Lily and Mikayla.

Our defensive end worked tirelessly all day, with BOC given to Larni Shiner.

Usually a mid courter, I’ve given her the task of applying defensive pressure in our opponents goaling end and she’s doing it perfectly.

Coaches was given to Captain Beth Pellegrino who, alongside Larni in our defensive end is applying pressure and continued to make our

opponents goalers work hard.

UNDER 13 THIS week the under 13s had a tough game with a bare seven again, the girls continued to push and get multiple intercepts throughout the game.

Our best went to Madison Wilson, who had multiple intercepts and was amazing in defence throughout the entire game.

Our coaches award went to Marlee Galvin, who continued to bring the ball down court, had a few intercepts and had a great voice down court.

I am so proud of these girls for coming up against a tough side and giving it their all.

Goulburn Valley partners with one FM REPRESENTATIVES of the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League (GVL) have met with the board of ONE FM, and both parties are pleased to confirm that they have agreed to move forward positively in the best interests of the GVL and the Goulburn Valley community.

The organisations hold a strong, communicative and transparent relationship, and look forward to moving

TOUGH WEEK: Longwood endured another tough week against a strong side, but stuck together through it all and played their hearts out.

Longwood reserves work hard against strong, determined Stanhope side KDFNL FOOTBALL LONGWOOD RESERVES THE reserves had another tough game this week coming up against a well drilled Stanhope side, once again to the boys’ credit they worked hard all day, getting in and having a red hot crack.

Luke Allison is becoming somewhat important with another solid performance; Dave Richardson and Corey Bell were solid

down back all day.

We now turn our attention to welcoming Nagambie to Redlegs stadium next week.

UNDER 18 THE under 18s started off slow in the first half, picked up in the second half, but with a lot of errors and poor kicking Stanhope capitalised.

Our better players were Dakota Pellegrino, James Wall and Zane Kilroy.

A last minute scratch

match was organised with Violet Town to keep the youngsters that aren’t away for school holidays occupied.

A dominant first half allowed them to stay in front for the remainder of the match with a great team effort highlighted by excellent pressure and tackling.

The improvement in these kids is a joy to watch.

THE course reopened to walking players only after three weeks of cancelled play during which 80mm of rain was recorded on the course.

It was still very soggy under foot, however the greens were in perfect condition.

Only 10 men and six ladies competed in the Saturday events, but others took the opportunity for a social hit.

Peter McMahon handled the heavy conditions the best to win the event with 37 points from Gaz Ritchie on 34, 21 of which he scored on the front nine.

Gaz played some good golf picking up two Nearest the Pins and two Drive and Pitch.

Gaz and Dick Farmer both had two shot birdies.

The July Monthly Medal and second round of the Winter Cup have been held over until conditions improve.

Even though there has been no golf over the last month, the course director and volunteers have been busy.

Much work has been done clearing drains which will help going forward.

The pruning and clearing of trees program is also continuing.

In other news it’s been announced that eight new cart sheds will be built in October.

100 plus with some in the field to loosely use the cricket term going on with the job.

The Nagambie pennant team hosted on Sunday gone with the home team winning five and zero against Tatura Hill Top, the win elevated the Nagambie side to top spot midway through the season, with two more rounds to play.

The team needs to finish first or second on the ladder to make the final and have a chance to win a pennant for the first time since 2016.

Depleted Bears languish

GVFL RESERVES THE Euroa reserves team were able to come away with a big win against the struggling Shepparton Bears team. Due to the opposition struggling with numbers the game was reduced to a sixteen a side game.

To the credit of the Shepparton team they tried hard and we thank them for working to get a team on the park, giving our reserves team a game on the day.

From the start our reserves team were quickly in control with Matt Ivill dominating in the ruck, getting the ball to our midfielders who were yet again superbly led by Craig Bamford.

This control of the play allowed the team to move the ball into their forward line where Robbie Wilson was a focal point for the team.

It was pleasing to see some players returning to the club which will help our numbers going forward.

Further, it was wonderful to see how the senior players worked with the younger group, sharing the ball and giving them encouragement along the way.

Brendan Allen’s move into

the ruck to give Matt Ivill a chop out and was a very good move - helping Brendan to build on his fitness for the tougher games we have coming up.

As always, coach Linc McKernan encouraged the team - leading the way in defense and making sure all players had time on the ground.

Congratulations to Marcus Kelly who scored his first goal in aussie rules football.

Just when Hayden Berry thought he had stolen the show by slotting a goal himself, Marcus bobbed up for one of his own.

Next week to take on the Echuca reserves team which will be a big challenge.

By NICHOLAS McCABE COMING off back-to-back wins, the Magpies made their way to the GV home of football, Deakin Reserve, with an element of optimism about what the day may hold.

However, they knew it was not going to be an easy day with Will Creevey called up from the Under 16 team to play senior football and Fletcher Paul’s unavailability.

To add further strain on the Magpie line up pre-game, Cohen Paul sustained a head knock in the u16s along with Mitch Walters severely injuring his knee, which meant coach Hill resorted to playing 16 aside.

Shepparton came firing out of the blocks early securing two quick majors, but in turn Ryan Hill steadied the ship for the Magpies getting them on the board.

The Bears’ dynamic ball movement proved too strong for the Magpies in the second quarter who were running

out of legs with in-form captain Keily Jager going down with illness.

The second half was all about showing heart for the Pies and getting aspects of the game back on their terms.

The fight and determination shown by the boys in this second half is something to be admired with Darby Wilson, Heath Downie and Ryan Hill all having stellar games showing plenty of fight as requested by the coach.

With zero bench rotations in the final quarter the Magpies had their backs against the wall.

However, this did not stop them from matching the scoreboard with the Bears in this final quarter, both sides scoring 25 points apiece to round out the match.

In the end, the Magpies lacked numbers and couldn’t match the ball use or overlap run of the Bears but they never stopped fighting and showed a sensational amount of grit.

Coach Mills had his boys ready and firing to take on one of the top teams in the competition - really looking to see where his team was ‘at’.

The promotion of Will Creevey into the senior side was wonderful in many respects yet was a huge loss for his team.

The game began in excellent fashion as both sides moved the ball well into their forward lines - unfortunately the ability to kick it through the ‘big sticks’ was proving quite a challenge for both teams - at times missing some very gettable goals.

Darby Wilson kicked the only goal for the first quarter as he went about securing best on ground honors for the day. The second and third quarters were back and forth with tight contests all over the ground - Darby getting his second goal.

Late in the game Cohen Paul was taken in a heavy tackle - leaving him quite

dazed and unable to take the resulting free-kick.

Ryan Hill stepped up to the plate and slotted it through to make it less than a kick with five minutes left on the clock.

The following passage of play was neck-and-neck for both teams as they moved the ball from one end of the ground to the other.

In these last few minutes, the ball was down in Euroa’s forward 50 and in the hands of the very skilled and reliable Mitchell Walters - he kicked the centering ball yet in the process was tackled in an awkward fashion resulting in a devastating leg injury which meant a trip to the hospital and eventually surgery in Melbourne on Sunday.

The team, coach and club wish Mitch the very best on what is hoped to be a speedy recovery.

Suffice to say the game finished there with Shepparton Bears in front by two points and claiming the victory.

Euroa netballers fight hard at Deakin Reserve GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE EUROA headed off to Deakin on Saturday- a trip that is traditionally considered a tough gig.

Shepparton were keen to keep their finals hopes alive for this season and had a lot to prove.

The game had all the promise of a real old-fashioned show down, and did not disappoint.

Euroa started off transitioning the ball beautifully into the attack end, with Karly Wappett and Bree Poole moving well in the ring.

Some good rebounding in defense against a tall opposition saw Euroa ending the quarter with a three goal lead.

The Magpie goalers continued to combine well, and Kellie Davidson and Eliza Hoare were finding plenty of the ball to feed into the goal ring.

Shepparton continued to apply plenty of pressure, keeping it a close contest.

At the start of the third quarter, Shepparton lifted their intensity, moving the ball well and applying very close attention to our attack end.

This created several turnovers and the quarter ended with Euroa only having a two goal lead.

In the last quarter, with plenty of crowd support spurring the Shepp girls on and forcing Euroa errors, Shepparton found themselves leading on the score board.

The Magpies did not give up and tireless efforts from Tylah Marchbank and Bridget Hill in defense saw the scoreboard see-saw until the last few seconds when Shepparton’s con-

fidence grew and they finished with a two goal win.

Thanks to Katie Frewen, Caitlyn Elliot and Elisha Kubeil for stepping up after playing a game in B grade.

All girls did an awesome job.

B RESERVE THE B reserve girls were up for a tough game playing against the Shepparton Bears who were just one position higher on the ladder.

Euroa got off to a slow start but found a good rhythm towards the end of the quarter, however still found themselves down by five goals at the first break.

The girls fought hard against the Bears strong defense.

Demi Walker’s return after injury to the goal shooter position provided some inspiration to the Magpies.

Defenders Mary Frewen, Alita White and Cathryn Gray turned over a lot of the ball for the Euroa side throughout the whole game.

Molly Redfern and Hannah Kubeil, the ever reliable U17 players, took to the court in the third quarter, along with Kalarni Anderson to provide some fresh legs and drive through the midcourt.

Elle Sanders took a wellearned break after half a game in the center position.

The girls came out firing in the last and closed the margin slightly, recording a 10 goal to six quarter, which was their best quarter for the game.

UNDER 17 EUROA travelled to Deakin Reserve on Saturday to take on ladder leaders Shepparton on what turned out to be a perfect winter’s day.

In scenes reminiscent of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the Magpies lined up against their much taller opponents for four punishing quarters of netball, and even though they lost, left the court with their heads held high at the final whistle.

Goalers Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter initially found it difficult to actually see the ring beyond the extended reach of the Bear’s defenders.

A unanimous decision by both girls to just ‘have a go’ was soon paying dividends, with

some beautiful long goals being thrown.

Sienna’s movement under the goals was impressive, as was Molly’s rebounding, where she out jumped two six foot tall girls to retrieve the ball on a couple of occasions- much to her own surprise and delight.

Defenders Laura Frewen, Chloe Salter and Millie Watson have had many tough assignments over the season, and none more so than on Saturday.

Pitting their skills against the well drilled Bear’s attack, the Magpies were consistent in their efforts across the whole game, with Millie in particular displaying an incredible ability to read the play and intercept with skill.

Laura had her best game of the season at goal keeper, an unwavering, determined presence in the last line of defense.

Hannah Kubeil, Meg Walker, Abby Harrison and Lily Meehan had the unenviable task of trying to tame the Bears midcourt.

Dealing with a crowded

court, close zones and noisily shouted directions by the opposition could have cowered lesser girls, but the Magpies continued to play their game, making the correct decisions at the correct time and moving the ball out of defense and into attack.

At the end of the game it was a solid win to the Bears- but to be honest, that had always been expected.

In David and Goliath situations, very rarely does David actually defeat Goliath.

However, the teamwork and enjoyment that was evident on Saturday from all the Magpies demonstrated once again that they are constantly improving and moving in the right direction each week.

Best players awarded by the coach: Laura Frewen, Lily Meehan, Abby Harrison Shepparton 61 Euroa 35 UNDER 15 A CLEAR, sunny, yet bitterly cold day greeted the under 15 girls, their coach and supporters at Deakin Reserve last Saturday as their clash against Shepparton Bears got underway.

The Euroa girls burst out of the blocks with the first three goals of the match - goalers Izzy Smith and Ruby Watson combining well and capitalizing on the wonderful mid-court work of Irish Anderson and Marnie Salter.

The Bears started to get their game going half-way through the quarter as they proceeded to pile on 11 goals to Euroa’s six for the quarter.

Lily Fowler and Tess Walker defended well in the first quar-

ter with Scarlett Trotter dominating at wing defense.

A couple of changes at quarter time saw Oakley Paul come on to the court at goal defense.

Scarlett and Irish were working hard in the middle of the court, yet the height of the Bear’s opposition was starting to impact the passing effectiveness of the smaller Euroa girls.

Another 11 goals on the board for the Bears to Euroa’s four meant a healthy lead of 12 goals at the main break for the home side.

The second half saw a real domination on the scoreboard by the Bears as they scored 29 goals to Euroa’s nine for the half.

Coach Hill kept encouraging her team - providing excellent feedback and direction along the way.

Ella was in the goal-ring alongside Ruby as they tried hard to convert opportunities throughout the half.

Some of the passing was becoming more effective - bounce passes providing a way round the height challenge between the teams.

In a very physical defending game, Lily and Tess were thriving as they were determined to make the Bears earn each goal.

Thanks again to all who continue to support this team in volunteering their time to complete the multitude of jobs on a weekly basis.

Sights now set on hosting Echuca next Saturday at Memorial Oval. Go Pies.

GOTAFE GVL celebrates indigenous round THE GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League (GVL) celebrated the annual Indigenous Round this past weekend. w In conjunction with NAIDOC week, it is a celebration of the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across GVL communities.

GVL acting Chair Jacqui Hudgson said, “this round is always a special round in the GVL’s calendar, it is a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate our Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players, history and culture”.

“Our member clubs all celebrate with acknowledgements, traditional dancing and smoking ceremonies and welcome to country organised at various games”.

The GVL looks forward to 2023 celebrations and is excited to announce that the league is the successful recipient of a funding grant of $147,000.

The funding is from the ‘Preventing the Cycle of Violence - Strengthening Families Fund’ and will assist in expanding the Cultural Sporting Prevention implemented in the KDL. GOTAFE’s Koorie Unit coordinator Tracy Hardie will lead the initiative and will run in partnership with the GVL and AFL Goulburn Murray.

This is going to be a whole of league initiative, w and all 12 member clubs will participate. w Jacqui Hudgson said, “We are proud to partner with project lead Tracy w Hardie and our Major Naming Rights Partner GOTAFE to deliver this project to our clubs.”

“The opportunity to create greater understanding and knowledge of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders history and culture whilst promoting the No Violence message is incredibly powerful.”

The initiative is looking to include; A say no to violence round that will look to raise awareness of violence, which will include a senior football w and netball line up and player address, a childrens’ fun day/family day which will be held at a feature match with a guest speaker to read the player address.

GVFL SENIORS FOOTBALL THE Euroa senior football team accounted for a determined Shepparton Bears outfit at Deakin Reserve last Saturday on what was a cold and clear winter afternoon.

Coach Rowan and his team were wary of not giving this clash their full attention - a couple of outs from the previous week (Hellier, Pendlebury and Uthayakumar) meant opportunities presented for a return from Jack Frewen, a first game in the seniors for 2022 from Zac Gleeson and a debut by exciting under 16’s player, Will Creevey, the latter being presented his jumper by Euroa legend, Gary ‘Nipper’ Harvey before the game.

On a particularly sad note the senior side wore black armbands on the day out of respect for the passing of Erish Uthayakumar’s father during the week - may he Rest in Peace.

The wind was playing havoc with the accuracy of the passing, shots for goal and general play as the Bears took it right up to the Euroa Magpies from the first bounce.

Despite these challenges from the opposition the Euroa side put four goals on the board by quarter time to the Bears two, holding a handy 13-point buffer at the break.

A lack-luster second quarter saw the Bears kick the only goal for the period of play.

This gave the Euroa side plenty to think about at the main break as

players and coaching staff alike were planning a second half that was to result in more goals.

To that end, the second half of the game saw Euroa put seven goals on the board to Shepparton’s four - meaning for a somewhat comfortable, in the end, victory by five goals.

Catalysts in the second half were the likes of co-captains Marcus Varley and Jacob Gleeson whilst the class of Ben Giobbi and Jett Trotter up forward shone though in particular.

Andrew Smith was a beacon in the center with his excellent ruck-work complimented very well by young gun Ben Bath.

Up forward, Tristan Davies made the most of his limited opportunities with some very clever goals whilst the crowd were treated to a highlight again from Jack McKernan who calmly slotted a goal from the tightest of angles.

With a top-of-the-table clash set for this weekend at Memorial Oval (Saturday, July 9, 2:35pm) for the clash with Echuca Bombers there is sure to be a huge crowd for this game of football.
