Arts, culture push THERE is a growing push within the Euroa community to improve the facilities and resources needed to support arts and culture in the area.

The Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) held a meeting on Monday last week at the historical society with a special focus on finding ways to support art, music, live theatre and more.

Residents noted that Euroa has significantly less resources for artists compared to surrounding areas, despite the community having a keen interest in various forms of art.

Violet Town has a

specialised gallery, Nomad Art is currently based in Avenel, Steve Tobin’s Heavy Metal Art is operating out of Longwood and Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art is in Nagambie.

Larger surrounding areas such as Wangaratta have a dedicated performing arts centre, art galleries and an art society.

One question posed to ECAG was: Where is the arts community here and

how do you find it?

There are some incoming art events being held at the Butter Factory, including a textiles group, however there is a desire for more public events held within town and the establishment of a space for community artists.

ECAG president Laura Baker discussed the limited areas in Euroa to display art and music.

“Northern Republic has live music but there are

hardly any other facilities,” she said.

“With no dedicated art spaces beyond the library, there is definitely a need for more.”

One ECAG attendee reflected on a time where Euroa had many musical guests visit town.

“John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes both came here years ago, it would be nice to have that again,” they said.

Labor proposes housing scheme to assist regional Victorians IF elected to Federal Government, Labor is planning to establish the Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme in order to help regional families buy their first home.

This initiative aims to help 10,000 Australian families a year in regional areas like Indi.

This would triple the amount that regional Australians received last year under the current First Home Loan Deposit scheme.

Labor’s candidate for Indi, Nadia David, believes the scheme will be beneficial to those who wish to purchase a home in North East Victoria.

“It is harder to buy a house today than ever before,” Ms David said.

“Last year, regional house prices jumped by 26 per cent on average and in some areas, like Bright, much more.

“Given the massive increase in housing costs in country areas, home buyers in regional areas like Indi need and deserve their own dedicated scheme to support

them to buy a home.

“This is a way for people to own their own home without putting upward pressure on housing prices by providing cash grants.

“To get the benefit of this scheme, applicants need to have lived in our community for at least the previous 12 months and a housing price cap of $500,000 will apply to Indi.

“This is about helping people who earn less than $125,000 for singles and $200,000 for couples to buy their own home without having to save for a 20 per cent deposit and potentially be slogged with mortgage insurance if they can’t.”

The Federal Government’s own review of the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation called for the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme to be expanded in the regions last year.

“The Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme will help first home buyers get into a house sooner with a deposit of just 5 per cent without the need to pay

Lenders Mortgage Insurance, saving locals thousands of dollars,” Ms David said.

“This is possible because the government will guarantee up to 15 per cent of the value of the property.”

In order to access the scheme, locals should apply through an eligible bank or loan provider and be approved under the standard loan assessment criteria for their capacity to service the mortgage.

“Obviously, housing prices are changing all the time so an Albanese Labor Government will also review and update the price caps on a six-monthly basis and review the allocation of unused guarantees to regions that need more support,” she said.

Ms David will launch her campaign at the Blazing Stump, Wodonga at 6pm this Friday.

Dr Haines recounted the

ways in which the people of Indi had worked together to push the “Australian Federal Integrity Commission Bill, the Indi Bill, further than any other proposal for an integrity body at a federal level”.

She promised to continue to push for an integrity commission and a better standard of politics, action on climate change and investment in regional healthcare.

Dr Haines called on the crowd to speak with others in their community about the vision for Indi and how it can be made a reality, noting the seat has been ‘Independent’ for almost 10 years.

“I have never believed more strongly in the importance and power of our community thinking and speaking for ourselves, the importance, of an Independent Indi,” she said.

The launch was told more than 1700 people have signed on to volunteer to keep Indi Independent at the election.

Ag society opens pavilion

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Agricultural Society has opened its new pavilion on-site at the showgrounds.

The recently completed modern addition to the area was revealed to the bumper crowd.

Agricultural society president, Andrew Douglas, explained the grant and funding situation for the upgrade and the length of time this took.

“The grant came out before COVID even started,” he said.

“There was 20 million on offer nationwide for agricultural societies.

“There were two options for the grant, one was for $124,999 without co-contribution or you could get a larger grant of $500,000 with co-contribution.”

Mr Douglas said they had reached out to council for assistance in gaining the larger grant.

“We drew up plans or a vision of spending the half million dollars and applied to council to get the co-contribution,” he said.

“We needed 70,000 from another party and went to council but got knocked back.

“So we decided we’d go for the smaller grant.

“We put tenders out for the project and we ended up with $121,551.”

Mr Douglas noted there was a lengthy process involved to receive the funding and to get the building completed.

“It took nearly nine months from when we tendered for it and quoted on it before we got an answer and we only just finished now,” he said.

“If anyone understands the building industry, costs went up so we had to alter what we were doing.

“We used hundreds of volunteer labour hours and had to reconfigure the way the project was done.

“It was a project that took a lot out of us and a lot of hours but I was lucky to have a great team.

“Special thanks to Ron Hocking, The Kavanaghs, Leanne Colclough and my sister.”

The impressive new facilities and modern fittings look to improve the showgrounds’ capacity as a community venue.

“If anyone remembers the building it was really just a tin shed,” Mr Douglas said.

“I hope everyone thinks its fresh and it puts a smile on their face.

“We’re pleased with the outcomes and hope the committee, the volunteers and more so the community are happy with this facility and hope that this facility is the first stage of a bigger thing for this area.”

The improvements are part

of a bigger picture for the agricultural society and the wider Euroa community, according to Mr Douglas.

“We provide this space for CFA staging areas, it’s an emergency area, we provide it for lots of things and we try our best to make it a community asset,” he said.

“I hope the past members are looking down on us and seeing

that we’re having a bit of a go.

“We’ve got to have a vision for the future of this society, we have to have a transitional change.

“Let people in and let them have a go, it doesn’t matter if they’re 80 or 18.”

The facility has already been used for recent meetings and functions, with many more planned for the future.

Euroa Community Cinema is currently closed due to refurbishments.

Mr McGavin thanked those who contributed to Purple Day and revealed plans for this becoming an annually recognised event in the community.

Meet the Candidates forum coming THE Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) will be hosting a ‘Meet the Candidates Forum’ for Euroa and surrounding towns that reside in the Indi electorate.

The event will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 6pm and will provide local residents a chance to hear from federal candidates for the Indi region.

A wide range of candidates are expected to attend, including current MP, Helen Haines.

Ross Lyman of the Liberal Party, Liz Fisher from the Nationals and Nadia David from the Australian Labor Party will also attend.

The intention of the night is to have a friendly panel discussion where three to five community questions will be asked to the candidates.

Community garden planning sprouts into new ideas

By GUS RIDDER PROGRESS has been made on the Euroa Community Garden project occurring on Brock Street.

At the Euroa Community Action Group (ECAG) meeting last week a status report on the garden was discussed.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been agreed upon with council ensuring that the garden project will go ahead.

Speaking on this, Loretta from ECAG discussed the next steps for the community garden.

“Now that we have the MOU in place we’re really keen to make a statement and get things going,” she said.

“We’re hoping to get something happening by the end of April.

“We’re planning to put some signage up on the block to give a visual about what will be allocated to each area.

“This will allow everyone to get a better idea of what the garden will look like.”

A name has now been announced for the garden site too after ECAG begun discussions with the Taungurung Land and Waters

Council (TLaWC).

“We’d seen posts from TLaWC on Facebook about their word of the day,” she said.

“A word that stood out was Yiiro and that means joyful place in Taungurung language, so we spoke with them and they’re more than happy to let us use that name.

“It will be called the Yiiro Garden on Brock, which gives us a name and identity and incorporates the history of the area.”

With the commencement of the project quickly approaching, ECAG reiterated their need to ensure that the area is sustainable and beneficial to the community.

“There is a real focus on sustainability for the garden,” she said.

“In addition to the garden, we will have water tanks and solar panels to be included with the nature.

“Community engagement and making sure the surrounding neighbours aren’t impacted is important.

“We will be reaching out to the community to see if they want to help or contribute in any way, in-

“There are plans to do an opening or some activity to announce

the beginning of the planting.”

New parents urged to reach out for help NEW research conducted by the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE) reveals saddening stories from hopeful, expectant, and new parents about negative experiences at each stage of the journey to parenthood – and the impact of those on their lives and wellbeing.

Around 15 per cent of couples experience infertility.

Many describe it as a physical and emotional rollercoaster with adverse impacts on relationships, financial security and mental health.

Pregnancy can be far from the glowing experience often portrayed.

Prolonged and severe morning sickness, negative body image, family violence, anxiety and depression are just some of the challenges faced in pregnancy.

Miscarriage and stillbirth are more common than realised, leaving people shattered and heartbroken.

Birth trauma is underestimated, with the impact lasting for years.

The trauma can be magnified by the words spoken by health professionals in the moment that are never forgotten.

Professionals take heed.

Alarmingly, 75 per cent of parents describe emotional and mental distress in their first year of parenting.

Severe sleep deprivation, relationship tension and loneliness contribute to poor mental health and can trigger terrifying

thoughts, outbursts of rage and postnatal anxiety and depression.

Due to high levels of stigma and social pressure, parents hide challenges from others for fear of judgement and even worry about having children removed from their care.

This only exacerbates the impacts on mental health.

The findings emphasise the critical need for routine, universal, mental health screening of all hopeful, expectant and new parents, to identify distress early, and ensure timely referral.

When it comes to education, the current narrow focus on post–natal depression and anxiety is too little, too late.

New approaches must offer more comprehensive information on the broader range of challenges at these vulnerable life– stages and address the stigma that exists.

Funding slide puts communities at risk LOCAL libraries, playgrounds, sporting grounds and community centres are at risk unless the Federal Government addresses the downward slide in Financial Assistance Grants provided to councils.

The total value of these grants as a percentage of Commonwealth taxation revenue had dropped in the Federal Budget from 0.6 per cent to 0.55 per cent.

Historically Financial Assistance Grants were set at one percent of Commonwealth taxation revenue, and now they are nearly half that amount.

We need to reverse the slide so our communities continue to get the services and support they need.

Local governments are seeking a gradual increase to at least one percent, which would enable us to create more jobs, build more libraries and playgrounds, and reduce cost of living pressures for local families.

These grants are so important because they are untied, meaning they can be spent on local priorities.

Councils are also calling for an immediate and once–off additional $1.3 billion injection of Financial Assistance Grants to boost local economies.

Supporting our communities through droughts, bushfires, COVID and floods has put stress on local government budgets across the country.

These challenges have compounded an already difficult situation for many councils, particularly in rural, regional, and remote communities with large areas to service but small ratepayer bases.

Increasing Financial Assistance Grants makes economic sense, and it would enable us to continue to support every community.

Olympic gold medallist speaks at women’s breakfast NAGAMBIE continued its longstanding tradition of arranging an International Women’s Day Breakfast last month.

The annual event, hosted by the local Community House, always gathers a big crowd.

This time, about 70 people came to listen to Olympic Gold Medallist and World Champion Lucy Stephan, OAM. It was an excited crowd who appropriately met up at the Nagambie Rowing Club to listen to esteemed rower and honorary local.

Lucy is a seven-time consecutive Australian champion and Olympic gold medallist.

In 2017 she won a world title in the coxless four and regained that same world title in 2019.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics she led the crew from the bow seat of the Australian coxless four to a gold medal victory.

Generously enough, Lucy started her speech by showing off and letting the participants hold her beautiful gold medal.

The audience was then treated to a brief exposé of the history of rowing where Lucy described how women for years were systematically discriminated against.

This discrimination took different expressions but included men raising concerns over female rowers becoming too muscly and subsequently having less feminine bodies.

Thankfully, this has changed and the female Australian rowers who have reached such international success, are today making the whole country proud.

However, life as a full-time rower is not without its chal-

Lucy gave the listeners a transparent glimpse of what it is like not only to live together with the other female rowers, but also to compete with them for spots in the Australian rowing team.

“We’re all taken away from

our main support networks because the training centre is in Penrith,” she said.

“It means we have to move away from our families, our partners, and our friends and we literally spend every second of every day together.

“But it also means we support

each other.

“The trainers put us in the trenches together and it made us bond like no other women’s team I have been part of.”

As per usual, the breakfast event also raised money for a charity supporting women.

In line with the UN 2022 International Women’s Day theme, which was Changing climates: gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow, the community house gave all surplus funds to Wise Choices for Life.

Wise Choices for Life is an Australian charity organisation which runs “train the trainer” programs in Uganda on reproductive health.

The organisation aims at reducing fertility rates which is one of the root causes of poverty in developing countries and also leads to high mortality rates.

Nagambie Lakes Community House (NLCH) president Edna James was thankful for the event.

“Overall, it was an amazing morning,” she said.

“We are so incredibly grateful to Lucy Stephan who came and spoke to us free of charge so that more money could go towards the charity.

“She was inspiring, humble, and made the audience laugh out loud on several occasions.

“We cannot thank her enough.

“Today we not only got to celebrate success for equality, listen to an amazing human being and rower, but also put the spotlight on gender areas which still need awareness, attention, and work.

“Many wins have been made, yet there is still so much left to do.”

Council reacts to federal budget

By GUS RIDDER THE Strathbogie Shire Council has revealed that they were pleased with the outcomes for regional Victoria in the recently released federal budget.

Mayor Laura Binks said that there were several pleasing outcomes for the shire.

“The recent federal budget announcement included some positive aspects for

regional Victoria,” Cr Binks said.

“The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program has been extended until 2024/25, which provides funding for local councils to maintain and deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects as well as the Roads To Recovery Program, funded until 2025/26.

“Other expenditure of note

included funding to upgrade the NBN network as well as the Connecting Regional Australia initiative with funding to expand mobile coverage, support technology improvements, improve accessibility, and resilience to natural disasters.

“Another benefit to council’s cash flow has been bringing forward the payment of Financial Assistance grants; council will not receive more

money as a result of this, however the funding will be delivered earlier.

“Council welcomes all federal funding that supports the lives of those living in regional and rural communities and we hope that Strathbogie Shire will be considered for a portion of some of these programs and initiatives.”

Meanwhile, Regional Cities Victoria (RCV) has stated the Federal Government’s

overall record investment in the regions in the 2022-23 Federal Budget is encouraging but says regional Victoria deserves more.

Chair of Regional Cities Victoria, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, said it was important to invest in regional Victoria.

“After an incredibly challenging two years, investment in regional Victoria is critical to help our local economies rebuild and re-

cover,” she said.

“Particularly as more and more people move to the regions, we need government investment to help us grow, and be great places to live, work, and visit.

“We welcome the Government’s funding for transport, community infrastructure, and digital connectivity, which will support jobs and enhance liveability across regional Australia.”

More community learning opportunities available MORE opportunities for community-based learning are being provided to people within Euroa.

Earlier this year, Community Learning Euroa (CLE) entered into a partnership with MACE Mansfield for the delivery of Adult Community Education Courses (ACFE) programs in Euroa.

CLE has also made arrangements with the Euroa Community Band to run the funded courses from the William Pearson Memorial Hall (the Band Hall) on Kirkland Avenue.

Since then, CLE has been delivering the Learner Engagement Program (LEAP) pre-accredited program weekly on Wednesdays.

The last two sessions held focused on how to understand different personalities and

recognise jobs and pursuits that are most fitting for each person.

Using the Myers-Briggs personality discovery, participants uncovered their own styles in a group environment and showed that each person was the best at being ourselves.

The final session for this course ran on Wednesday, April 6.

The flexible course will run again later in the year.

Apart from the fun, it’s a great way to help you find out how to approach job prospects, hobbies and the arts.

Visitors make most of mini railway that’s taking rides again THE Euroa Miniature Railway was back in action last week with several visitors experiencing the joy of riding on the train.

President Wendy McDonald said there was a great turnout to the railway on Sunday.

“We were very busy and had visitors from Shepparton, Benalla, Albury, Melbourne and Geelong as

well as local Euroa regulars,” she said.

“The Lions club was kept busy cooking up a storm in the kiosk and the train drivers certainly had loaded carriages.”

The railway is open on the fourth Sunday of every month, with the next event expected to be held on Sunday, April 24.

THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) are encouraging Victorians to turn your clocks back and to check your fire alarms.

Daylight saving officially ended and while it does mean Victorians will get an extra hour of sleep, it also comes with a timely reminder to check your smoke alarms too.

Checking your smoke alarm involves pressing the ‘test’ button to ensure it’s in working order, and cleaning it with a duster, vacuum cleaner or gentle wipe to remove particles that could impact its performance.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said it is vital for families to conduct this life-saving check because only working smoke alarms save lives.

“If there is a fire in your home, a working smoke alarm can allow you to evacuate early and survive,” he said.

“We know that many fatal fires start at night and the

“Regardless of the type of smoke alarm you have, all smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.”

When checking, installing or replacing your smoke alarms, FRV and CFA suggest: • smoke alarms should be installed in every living area,

hallway and bedroom; • test your smoke alarm every month by pressing and holding the test button until the smoke alarm beeps three times; • clean your smoke alarms every year by dusting, vacuuming or gently wiping around the cover to clean it so it will sound if there is smoke; • all smoke alarm units (including those attached to mains power) should be replaced every 10 years, and it is best to replace with hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms. Otherwise, replace your smoke alarms with a unit that has a 10-year lithium battery in a tamper proof chamber; • smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when any alarm activates, all smoke alarms will sound; and • of you have 9-volt batteries in smoke alarms, the batteries must be replaced every year.

Candidate pleased with NBN funding

IT WILL GET BETTER: Ross Lyman said the funding will improve the quality of services being provided over the NBN fixed wireless and satellite networks.

LIBERAL party candidate for Indi, Ross Lyman, has expressed his support for the funding allocated in the federal budget for regional NBN upgrades.

Last week, it was revealed that a $480 million investment would be included in the 2022-2023 Federal Budget.

Mr Lyman welcomed the Government’s announcement, saying the funding will significantly improve the quality of services being provided over the NBN fixed wireless and satellite networks.

“One of the most frequent things I hear as I move around the North East is that we need more wireless internet coverage and increased bandwidth,” he said.

“Being a Liberal candidate, I have direct access to the Minister for Communi-

cations, and have been able to champion the communication needs of our region directly to government.

“This means people who rely on wireless internet, who operate things like regional businesses, market stalls and farming operations, can use technology like eftpos, or fly drones across their farms, with the knowledge the internet coverage and bandwidth will be there to support them.

“This announcement builds on the Morrison Government’s significant local investment in the Mobile Black Spot Program, with over 50 black spot towers built in the North East since the Liberals came to government in 2013, providing internet to some of the most remote locations across the North East.”

Internet speed and accessibility remains a pressing issue for residents of Indi and one that will be

increasingly relevant in the upcoming election.

Indi MP Helen Haines previously introduced a Faster Internet for Regional Australia bill to parliament in February.

“The purpose of this bill is simple: to ensure all regional Australians have access to fast, high-quality, and reliable internet at the same standard our city cousins enjoy,” she said.

“This should be a simple principle that we can all get behind in this place, but unfortunately, to date it is not.

“Everywhere I travel in Indi, constituents tell me about their challenges with phone coverage and internet connection.

“In Violet Town, I met with small business owners who’ve had to turn away customers because their EFTPOS machines can’t connect to wireless broadband signals.”

Todd Woodbridge impresses as hit TV show visits Euroa

By GUS RIDDER THE long-running hit television show, Postcards, stopped in Euroa this week to film a new episode.

A staple on the Nine network, Postcards has been on the air since 1998 in Victoria.

The show is labelled as Victoria’s most popular travel and lifestyle show and has its hosts travel across the state searching for the very best Victoria has to offer.

Postcards was in Euroa to recognise the town as a coffee and cake hub of Victoria.

Host of the show and Australian tennis legend, Todd Woodbridge, was joined by a camera crew as he visited some of the town’s popular spots.

First stop on the visit was to Mawson’s Bakery on Binney Street.

At Mawson’s, the arrival of the television crew caused quite a stir.

Many residents stopped by the bakery to witness the spectacle, with one group of women particularly excited to see the ‘handsome’ host Todd Woodbridge.

While filming the award-winning pies at Mawson’s, the crew had a chat with owner, Gayle Mawson.

Mrs Mawson was delighted to be able to showcase the bakery and provide information about Euroa.

“They emailed us and asked if we wanted to be a part of the episode, so we said of course,” she said.

“It was an honour that they chose us to be a part of it.

“It’s great for the whole town of Euroa if they can bring people to town, lets get Euroa on the map.

“We gave the whole crew some of our pies to take home.”

The morale boost to the town and those at the bakery was enormous, according to Mrs Mawson.

“Everyone told their families and got excited for the big day,” she said.

“It was really uplifting for us to see people happy to be in Euroa.”

The Postcards team also visited the historical society museum and the arboretum while in Euroa.

Nagambie water park underway CONSTRUCTION has begun at the splash park in Nagambie now that the community’s votes for the play equipment have been tallied.

Residents used Strathbogie Shire Council’s online engagement platform www. share.strathbogie.vic.gov.au to share their advice on the preferred equipment for the splash park.

At the top of the list was the water slide structure.

The splash park located at Buckley Park is expected to be completed in late September.

In addition to the water slide, the park will also include a rainbow tunnel, a mushroom umbrella, tilting cones and splash buckets.

There is set to be a lot of fun for children, with crab and several more spraying apparatuses planned for the site.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said summer in Nagambie 2022 would be a great time for residents and visitors.

“It was wonderful to have so much input from Nagambie parents and children who will be the major users of the new splash park,” Cr Binks said.

“The voting for the equipment for the splash pad design showed that we have a very engaged group of residents both big and small who are delighted to choose the equipment for this new facil-

Strathbogie Shire has said they regret that the toilet facilities in this area have been

closed as they are within the construction site area.

The toilets will remain

closed during the construction period until an alternative solution is reached.

National medals for Boho Fire Brigade TWO members of the Boho Rural Fire Brigade received National Medals at their social night on Friday, March 4.

These medals are given for significant service to fire fighting and prevention.

This is a Queens Medal awarded to emergency service volunteers across Australia.

The recipients of these medals were Gary Washusen and Allan Smith.

Mr Washusen is currently captain of the brigade and has been for the last 10 years.

As a member for over 30 years, he has served the Boho RFB diligently in various roles.

Mr Smith has also been a

long time member of the RFB. Known as a very active member, Mr Smith has served in various positions and is due to receive his 60 year service medal from the CFA shortly.

Relief for state school families MEMBER for Euroa Steph Ryan has thanked State Schools’ Relief (SSR) for supporting local students throughout the community during lockdown.

SSR is a not-for-profit organisation that works with all state government schools in Victoria in order to assist families that are struggling financially.

They will provide school uniforms, footwear and other educational resources for these families.

In 2021, the charity supported almost 450 local students with laptops, dongles, headphones, stationery and other integral items for remote learning.

Ms Ryan said the charity had

FEEDING SEMINARS HELD IN EUROA: Agricultural workshops were held at the showgrounds last week, providing expert information on feeding to those in attendance.

By GUS RIDDER SEMINARS were held in the new pavilion of the Euroa Showgrounds this week as part of Advantage Feeders’ tours across Victoria.

The workshops aim to provide information and practical

techniques on supplementing for year-round pasture efficiency.

Previous presentations in March had occurred in Hamilton, Horsham and Bendigo before arriving in Euroa.

A large crowd gathered to participate in the seminars, with in-

dustry experts providing a presentation for those in attendance.

After the theory sessions, there were four practical demonstrations that involved the crowd.

These included an autopsy demonstration, instructions on using Lower Adjusted Cams for

ration control, information on how to get the most out of your pasture and lastly a session on training stock to feeders and using creep panels.

The workshops were supported by Agriculture Victoria, Ridley Agriproducts and Advantage Feeders.

(Rom.10:14) While Jesus breathed his last and soldiers confirmed death; supernatural phenomena began falling over the region; an earthquake, rocks and tombs opened, the heavy temple curtain split 2in two, and hours of daytime darkness followed; Matt.27: 51) causing some to say “Surely, this was the Son of God.” (Luke 23: 44-47) Jesus was buried in a rich mans’ cave. Roman guards were posted, because authorities knew of the prediction about Jesus rising again. On Sunday morning, faithful women arrived at Jesus tomb; to find no soldiers and the stone rolled away revealing only Jesus enbalming linen cloths.

Mary Magdalene spoke to a ‘man’ standing there, thinking him a gardener, crying and asking where the body was? All the man in white had to say was, “Mary”, and she fell to her knees at the Masters’ voice.

(John 20:15-18) Imagine the ecstatic joy as news quickly spread and truth dawned that Christ was risen indeed! “O’ ye of little faith”. “If Jesus wasn’t resurrected, our faith is in vain, useless and we deserve nothing but pity”. (! Cor 15:19) Jesus lived among 500 witnesses in the days after, ensuring that generations could attest to Jesus being seen alive. Likewise, resurrection is now ,every believers birth-right, promise and hope. (John 11:25-26).

Many attempts to disprove the Resurrection have failed.

After forty days, Jesus ascended into the clouds to His Heavenly Father.

(Acts 1:9-11) Jesus final instruction was the Great Commission; ‘Go, tell the world about My love for them ‘and ‘shepherd My sheep’. (Matt.

28:16-20, John 21:15-17) Before leaving Earth, Jesus told believers to wait in Jerusalem until Gods’ Heavenly ‘helper’ had imparted Gods’ enabling Holy Spirit power.

Fifty days later this incredible event occurred, falling upon the gathered crowds, when many came under the convicting baptism of the Holy Spirits’ presence. Pentecost was when the Church was born (Acts 2:113) and ‘Hades will never prevail against her’. (Matt.16:18) The Gospel has been unstoppable, spreading across the globe for the greater Good.

As people had watched Jesus ascend in clouds, angels stood by saying ‘Why do you stand looking …this same Jesus will return in the same way.” (Acts 1:11) Prophesies continue being fulfilled, but the most momentous was Israels’ miraculous restoration to nationhood in 1948.

Celebrate Easter Sunday on Mt Wombat THERE is no better way to celebrate Easter Sunday here in the Strathbogie Shire than to join with others and stand on Mt Wombat in the early hours of the morning at dawn, and watch the sun come up.

There will be a short ecumenical service and an opportunity to sing some wonderful Easter hymns as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

The service will be led by Pastor Bob Bruce (retired) and music accompaniment provided

by Di Mackrell with her harp and piano accordion.

Please meet at Mt Wombat at 6.30am (EST) bring a chair if you wish.

There will be car parking in several places below the summit, some involving a short walk and others a bit longer, depending on your level of fitness.

Should the weather

be inclement we will adjourn to the Kelvin View Fire shed on the Euroa Strathbogie Road.

A hot drink and hot cross bun will be provided after the service.

You are also most welcome to bring your own thermos, mug and hot cross bun if you prefer.

Ruffy Good Friday Lunch returns FOLLOWING a two year hiatus due to COVID, the Ruffy CFA will be holding their Good Friday lunch again.

A seafood luncheon will be held at the Ruffy Fire Shed on Good Friday, April 15.

The event will begin at 12.30pm and all community members are invited.

A major part of the lunch will be the Royal Children’s Hospital appeal, with a raffle occurring to raise money for a great cause.

There will be plenty of activities for all ages, including a silent auction, Easter egg hunt, jumping castle and the official unveiling of the community funded big-fill fire pump.

MOTHER’S UNION NEWS: Four of the Anglican Central Goulburn Mother’s Union members attended Lady Day at Trinity Cathedral at Wangaratta recently and we saw Jan Craig installed as our new Diocesan MU president and some members receive their long service awards from Bishop Clarence Bester.

MOTHERING SUNDAY: An old Church of England tradition on the 4th Sunday of Lent is Mothering Sunday. For centuries this has been carried over in many countries like Australia.

Once again St John’s at Nagambie celebrated this tradition with posies and simnel cake.

My Mother’s Union friend Marlene Brew and I for many years have made the small flower posies for our church mums and Nagambie Healthcare hostel, high care and nursing home ladies.

We enjoyed making them again this year, and they and the simnel cake made by Mother’s Union member Jenny Moran of St Paul’s Avenel were blessed on Sunday by our priest and handed out at church and Nagambie Healthcare.

Longwood Lookout

By Longwood Action Group Well, we sure are waiting for that Spring break of some rain.

After plenty of summer rain it has been very dry on the ground here.

Some puddles around but barely a mm in the gauge last weekend.

The next date for the Longwood Action Group meeting will be April 6th at 7pm, at the CFA shed meeting room.

The Longwood Football Netball Club are looking for canteen volunteers for this season.

Breakfast Club has commenced at Longwood Primary School each Wednesday at 8.30am.

District News This is a great opportunity for our students to come together before school to share breakfast in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Students can partake in cereals, fruit, toast, eggs, spaghetti/baked beans, just to name a few of the dishes on offer.

The school has been offered the BBQ at the Euroa Market on Saturday 21st May. As they have changed the format for this fundraiser, we require someone with a current food handling certificate to be present the entire time.

If you have this qualification and would be available to assist on the day even for a period, please let Yvonne know.

Building works are slowly but surely happening with our new toilet block coming to fruition.

In the next few weeks, we will see our new shade sails erected between the Gr 2-3 building and the main school.

Girls win big at CFA Championships REPRESENTATIVES from Euroa have won big at the CFA VFBV Firefighter State Championships in Mooroopna.

The Euroa Fire Brigade proudly announced that they were winners of the Female Aggregate competition, beating out several larger brigades to the award.

The Female Aggregate winner is awarded to the team with the most total points across the events.

With 22 other female teams competing, the award was very well received by those at the Euroa Fire Brigade.

Competing in a variety of events, the girls team was able to dominate the field and take home several trophies.

Teagan Kubeil from the team explained some of

the results.

“We cleaned up in three out of four of the senior ranked female events,” she said.

“It was the first year of these events, so we could set some records which is always fun.”

The team had been training and competing since September so winning the state championship was richly deserved.

GOLF NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE Nagambie April monthly medal was played with 27 players tackling the usual southerly breeze that consistently crosses the course.

Once again scores better to handicap were hard to come by with the day’s winner David Love the only player in the field managing that result, Love produced an 83-13-70 to win the medal by two shots, some basic putting tips from Jeremy Ezard before the round got underway helping deliver the win.

Runner up celebrating his birthday and shouting the bar was ‘great guy’ Greame Galvin with 80-8-72 beating home Tim Baldwin on count back 82-10-72.

The nearest the pin prizes went to ‘The Bullet’ Wayne LeCerf rifling one on to the small target at the third, and the only other for the day was Jeremy Ezard hunting the flagstick on the the 13th with a solid wedge.

Next week’s golf will be a stableford event with D. Love on office duty and J. Lodding in the bar.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB IT was opening day at Avenel on Saturday and a good crowd assembled to kick start the season.

Sutcliffe, Alston dominate bowls

By AUDREY MCINTOSH Although the autumn weather has not been as warm in the past week, bowlers have come to the greens to play social bowls and these days will cont8inue for a few weeks until the greens are closed for play over the winter season.

On Wednesday, March 30 16 played pairs and the winners were Ken Sutcliffe and Beth Alston.

Saturday April 2 17 players enjoyed a couple of hours bowling and winners were Tony Kingma(s), Beryl Harris, Dot Lomer and Greg Blatchford.

The final of the mens pairs was played during the week and Lindsay Cocking and David Cerini defeated Andy Houston and Jim Scarlet, a very good match on Sunday was the semi-final of the mixed pairs between Beryl Harris and KLen Fischer and Tony Kingma and Kristeen Boyce.

The few onlookers watched some excellent bowling over 14 ends in this game and Beryl and Len were the winners and will now play Anne and Ken Sutcliffe in the final.

The ladies pairs are still to be finalized.

This Sunday, April 10 is the president’s day and presentation evening with tea to follow.

Bowls will be played at 3pm, bowls attire please, followed by the presentation of 2022 season awards then tea.

Longwood footballers feel the first round heat from opposition THE Under 13s footballers had their first hit out for the season on Saturday at Violet Town.

With head coach Mark Goodall missing his assistants in Ben Grayham and Jake Dimech stepped into the role.

A number of new recruits to the team this season have added to the excitement of the young chargers.

Captain Cooper Goodall delivering an inspirational speech before game got the team ready to crack in.

Boom recruit Jac Roob was lively all day and found plenty of footy as did captain Cooper With more players to come back in next week we look to take on Undera at Redlegs stadium with a strengthened side.

The effects of Covid did not take long to have an impact on the Longwood footballers with a number of outs before even having a start.

The reserves were the first to feel the pinch with a number of regulars out

or playing up. A number of under 18’s footballers stepped up to help fill the void in both grades.

Only fielding the minimum numbers in the reserves after losing coach Brendan Brew early Saturday morning.

Assistant Mitchell Van De Duim had his first outing as coach.

Mitchell was impressed by the effort and the confidence shown by the Under 18’s boys in Luke Allison holding down centre half back, Harry Shiner

playing a steadying role across half back with great ball use and Connor Peterson with his dash off the wing.

The senior footballers missing a number of key outs headed by senior coach Michael Galvin and a host of new and existing footballers were always going to be challenged by a classy, well drilled Violet Town group.

Assistant coach Nathan Watson had a baptism of fire heading into the game with

five of our existing Under 18’s group taking to the field for the senior game in Nathan Whitling, Dakota Pellegrino, Harry Skinner, Cooper Gilder & Under 18’s captain Jack McDonald. Joining Jack for his first game was brother Ryley also in his senior debut after exiting the Under 18’s at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Caleb Ilbury also in his first season out of Under 18’s dominated the ruck with his athletic ability.

Coach Nathan as always worked tirelessly down back as did Matthew Ranger on ball and Kyle Withers also down back.

The Redlegs squandered plenty of opportunities going forward and unfortunately did not reap reward for effort.

With numbers being strengthened this week the Redlegs look forward to putting in a strong on field effort this week as they take on Undera at Redlegs Stadium.

The Hume highway rivals entered the field buoyed by the fact that season 2022 will/should be completed following the last two years interrupted by Covid.

Unfortunately for the Redlegs the home side unveiled two forwards that towered above and kicked a staggering 30 goals between them as the towners cruised to an emphatic 250-point win.

Last year’s centurion Josh Mellington kicked 17; his new offsider Jack Exell kicked 13 from centre half forward.

The win was set up early, a 10 goal first term which was followed by a 13 goal second term had the game put away safely by half time.

Besides the “twins” Lachie Baldwin (swannie) was outstanding, 43 possessions and three goals almost got him the nod for best, Matt McCarty just keeps going, the veteran kicked four himself and collected 36 touches rotating in the middle and up forward.

Ollie Ford was brutal, tough on the inside all day, his 33 possessions gave the forwards heaps of opportunities, together with Nick Abley (31) and two goals the on-ball brigade were stunning.

Due to a late withdrawal Lachie Ellis and veteran Tim Ross shared the ruck duties and although undersized did a mighty job, Ross who will play his 300th senior game this season is an inspiration to the younger players, others to do well were Riley Dowell, Ashton Triffett and the entire backline led by youngsters in Herring, Nathan Abley and Ryan Lloyd Williams.

As always, the skipper Ryan Jennings played well marshalling his troops, and nearly took mark of the day, but that will come!

This week old CGFL rivals Shepparton East host the towners, should be a good test, a few more players available will help the cause, it’s only a 25-minute drive, let’s get the whole town over there!

RESERVES The twos started their season off with a convincing win & it was great to see some new faces to the team.

It all started with Foxy in the ruck giving the on ballers first use of the ball & going forward to get a few goals himself.

New face Cody Day in the middle was awesome all day showing his flair around the stoppages & pitching in with a couple of goals.

Down back, another new face in Kaleb Hudson was picking off any forward entry from the Redlegs & working well with Mickey Jansen who’s speed and use off ball into the forwards was electric.

Down forward big Jake Styles had sticky mitts grabbing everything taking 18 marks and kicking 12 goals.

Was great to see the 2’s work as a team with no passengers in the game.

With a couple of positional changes from Violet Town they were able to regain their composure in the second half of the game to finish, putting out some fantastic passages of play.

Violet Town finished the game winning by five goals for a great team effort win for the start of the season.

Encouragement awards went to Ashlea Antonis and Taylah Ash. 13 & UNDER With many new faces and first games ever, the Violet Town team started the game a little shaky, with Longwood coming up with some great intercepts and deflections, but Violet Town finally got their first goal and started to find their team mates a little easier.

As the game went on the Violet Town grow in confidence and started to work well as a team to finished off with their

first win for the season.

C GRADE The girls started full of spirit and with great intensity which was a reflection of their effort and dedication throughout preseason.

Though heading into the match without a few players, the girls were lead strongly on court by captain Tegan North.

Some simple errors and lack of voice on court saw Longwood get a quick jump through the second quarter and then Violet Town played catch up for the remainder of the match.

The defence from Bri, Jasmine and Bec fought hard until the end and were setting up nicely to bring the ball out of the defensive end through the midcourt.

Best On Court Tegan North, Second Best Ellie Triffitt B GRADE Violet Town came out firing and were able to get a solid lead very early on.

The girls played consistently well as a team all game and adjusting to everything very quickly.

The defenders worked hard and gained multiple turnover’s, with the help of the midcourters bringing the ball down the court and feed the shooters, who were able to continue to shoot well and extend their lead at each quarter.

Violet Town’s fitness and intensity was a vital part of their win.

The communication between all the Violet Town team really stepped up which also helped

them win their first game of the season.

A GRADE Violet Town were eager to have a strong game and started the game of well, with a number of great passages of play in attack delivering the ball into their shooters beautifully and capitalising on any intercepts the defenders came up with.

Longwood came out strong from the quarter time break putting pressure on Violet Town and coming with some intercepts and started to score from Violet Town’s unforced errors.

Violet Town made some slight positional changes at half time and regained their composure to finish off the game strongly out running Longwood.

Nagambie speedway season begins

By DIANE GRANT THE Nagambie Speedway opened in 1971 and has proven to be one of the country speedway racing car industry’s most attractive tracks to drive on competitively or to be a spectator at the Nagambie Speedway Club events.

The track is looking good after all the work volunteers have done to get it ready for racing and the surrounds are neat and tidy after lots of work to get it into shape.

The track has been awarded a rating of a four-star Speedway Australia track, one of only three tracks in Victoria.

The Covid pandemic had taken its toll on the club’s activities since 2020, but had some reprieve in 2021 and were able to conduct some race meets.

Danielle O’Brien, Secretary of the Club’s administration said “Nagambie Speedway would like to thank all our hard-working volunteers for their help. The Club couldn’t have done it without you all over the past year or so, the track is looking great.”

In February this year the Nagambie Speedway Club held a Club day and now are partnering with Andrew’s Car Removals to sponsor a major long weekend of racing for the “Crash n Bash Open Victorian Title” on April 23-24 at the raceway just 10 kilometres out of Nagambie on the NagambieHeathcote Road.

The racing will start at 11am on the Saturday and 10am on the Sunday.

Nagambie Modified, Nagambie Opens, Nagambie Limited Standards and Nagambie Dirt Karts will compete but not for the titles, they are support classes for the weekend.

They just run for points for

their own end of season championship.

The Open Victorian Title is only for crash n bash opens racers.

There is a huge prize pool of trophies, sashes, medallions and more on the weekend to win.

Seeing it is a long weekend camping from Friday night will be allowed (gold coin donation please), camping will be permitted until Monday.

All drivers, spectators, volunteers and officials must be fully vaccinated against COVID 19 and must show proof upon entry.

Sarah Bulleen wins second round of Brooking Trophy LADIES Captain Sarah Bullen had a day out in the second round of the Brooking Trophy winning division one with a net 68 while Ros Doxey won division two with a net 70.

Ball winners were Pam Sprunt, Judy McLean and Lavinia Redfern.

Ros Doxey won the putts with 28 and picked up the nearest the pin on 8 and Drive & Pitch on five. Judy McLean and Annette Smith picked up nearest the pins, Drive & Pitch.

Charlie Walker won the men’s competition with 36 points.

It’s been a while since Charlie had a win.

He had a full head of hair the last time.

Paddy McCarthy cleared up the two Ball competition as well as a Drive & Pitch and a ball.

Don Bubeck was closest on 18 and Fred Jungwirth won the 3rd shot on four.

Other good scores were Brian Rosenbrock, Don Bubeck and Paddy McCarthy.

Friday saw the Twilight season come to an end with the end of daylight savings.

19 Players entered the final round and most of the

prizes went to the Eddy Family who are regular Twilight players.

Richard won the event with 21 points, Judy was runner up on 19 whilst Anna got the nearest the pin on 18 and Bill was a ball winner.

Scott Watson and Paul Jones won balls.

After the event most of the players enjoyed dinner at club sponsor The Middle Hotel.

The wind was up and the greens scarified and sanded increasing the challenge the fields faced on Saturday however, plenty of good scored were carded.

In the ladies Donella Currie had 20 points in the nine hole event and Dot Rule won division one with 38 points while Marion McMartins 34 points was enough to take division two.

Mandy Edwards has a good day to finish on 36 picking up a nearest the pin and Drive & Pitch along the way.

Matt Mills shot the score of the day collecting 38 points from his handicap on one, his round included nearest the pins on five & 12 as well as Drive & Pitch on 16.

Scott Watson and Scott Meehan were in second spot also on 38 points on count

Benalla junior squash players star at Albury RECENTLY the first of many junior squash tournaments for the year was held at the Commercial Club in Albury.

Of the 38 entries, nine were from Benalla - a tremendous turn out.

It was the first time competing at a tournament for most of the kids and they had a wow of a time.

As a bonus Raj Nanda, the current National Junior Pathways Coach was there to help them along and give coaching sessions.

Raj has recently returned to Australia after 15 years of coaching in New York.

He reached number three junior in Australia when he was a youngster, going on to be Victorian Open Champion in 2000 and reaching a career high of number 38 in the world in 2005.

He is an asset to have in this series of tournaments.

The star of the day would have to be Ryder Levy who won the A grade event, a terrific effort at his first tournament and only taking up squash a year or so ago.

Chloe Jacobs was the winner in C grade.

Runner up positions were won

by Alex Briggs in B grade and Tyler Vaughan in D grade.

Third position in B grade was taken out by Addison Pastuszka with Xavier Kerr winning the C grade plate event.

Madalyn Jacobs won most improved player and Yahkirah Kerr, after coming fourth in B grade also won the sportsperson award.

It was the first tournament for eight of the nine Benalla entrants, with Alex Briggs being the ‘veteran’ of junior tournaments, after taking out D grade in Wodonga last De-

These tournaments are aimed at beginner juniors and cater for different levels of ability.

The kids have a great deal of fun; playing, meeting new friends, getting coached by a squash legend and watching their peers and cheering them on.

The next Juniors Tournament is on at Shepparton on April 24, sure to be every bit as much fun.

Avenel defeat Nagambie in football season opener KDFNL - AVENEL SENIOR FOOTBALL Avenel 10.11-71 def Nagambie 9.11-65 AVENEL came away with a six point win in a thrilling opening round hit out at Nagambie. In tough conditions, with a strong wind causing havoc on ball movement throughout the day, Avenel fought it out to the end and held on to take the win.

Tim Karolidis was huge in his debut for the club in a best on ground performance, imposing himself at stoppages and driving us forward.

Tim Brook also impressed on debut with six goals up forward. Braydon Avola put his body on the line all day and the back six was solid with Lachy Watts, Max Lawrence, Daniel Clarke and Chayse Thomson leading the way.

Longwood C grade starts with win KDFNL - LONGWOOD NETBALL A grade A STRONG and consistent starting pace kept the score fairly tight for the first quarter in the round one match up against violet town.

Longwood showed great communication and preseason strategies in play throughout the match.

Although the last half saw the margin blow out, we’ve gained extensive insight for training sessions going forward, and are looking forward to implementing more of our best game practices next week.

Best on court - to the fearless, unrelenting defender Brooke Bennett, and Coaches award to our captain Toni Watson, for her control and guidance of the mid court.

C Grade Well what a great way to start the season off with a

win 9-24, all the ladies did a fantastic job, it was a real team effort, everyone gave 110%, and kept their heads held high.

With some great passing into the ring and some accurate shooting from the goalies, defenders worked hard for all 4 quarters, and great leading through the court, it was hard to pick a best on Kate Stuchbery and coachesKady Francis-Smith.

U15 The girls’ final score against Violet Town was: Violet Town: 27 Longwood: 22.

A massive effort by all the girls on the court to only go down by 5 goals, I am super proud of the teamwork I witnessed by all.

We had two brand new players who had barley played a game of netball before and I didn’t see a single person get frustrated at their own team mate.

Awards went to: Best on Court: Bella Trait. Bell absolutely ran her heart out all game, encouraged and guided the brand new player who was put in GS, only to shoot all 22 goals for the day; a massive effort.

Coach’s award: Bethany Pellegrino. Beth was pushed around all game and everyone could see her frustration, even after a moment of losing her cool, Beth was able to reset herself and continue to perform at a level of netball she should be proud of.
