Politics for health THE Euroa Hospital has been widely discussed by politicians in the past weeks, with its survival becoming a major campaign issue ahead of November’s state election.

The hospital recently made a plea to the government for help to keep its doors open, announcing that as a community owned hospital it can no longer afford to make annual losses year after year.

Members of the National Party were in Euroa on Tuesday, holding talks with the hospital’s top brass.

During the meeting, a commitment was made to secure the long-term

future of Euroa Health if the Nationals are elected into government this November.

The pledge made was that the Nationals, in government, would review the hospital’s funding needs and provide the money required to keep it open.

“The closure of Euroa Health would be catastrophic for the community,” Ms Kealy said.

“It would leave a gaping hole in healthcare across the region.

“The Nationals will invest in and support regional hospitals such as Euroa.”

Ms Cleeland said she was elated by the commitment to properly fund the hospital.

“If I am elected, I will fight tooth and nail to keep the doors of this service open,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Steph has been a fierce advocate for Euroa Health and I am determined to follow in her footsteps and make sure the hospital’s future is secure.

“I will be seeking a funding commitment from all sides of the political divide to ensure that no matter who forms government after November, the hospital will be saved.

“Regional Victorians shouldn’t have to settle for second best.

“If we are elected this commitment will ensure the amazing team at Euroa Health can continue doing what they do best.”

New Greens upper house candidate THE Greens have confirmed Dr Cate Sinclair as their lead upper house candidate for Northern Victoria ahead of November’s state election.

Dr Sinclair is a health clinician and researcher who manages her own small business, and is a mother of three.

In her work, and as the recent Greens candidate for the federal election, she heard frequently about the pressing need for investment and action for Northern regional communities.

“Northern Victoria is facing direct impacts of climate change, with floods, fires and droughts,” she said.

“We need action to replace coal and gas with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, but Labor and the Liberals are still backing more coal and gas.

“For too long, our region has been taken for granted by the major parties.

“Investment into health, transport and housing affordability hasn’t kept up with the needs of the community.

“Our communities are

incredibly resilient and resourceful, and know what the solutions are.

“The Northern regions are positioned to build the green industries and agriculture to meet the demand for environmentally sustainable products, jobs and services.

The fuel excise is a government-imposed tax placed on every litre of petrol sold in Australia.

Halving the excise meant consumers were giving less money to the government when purchasing either petrol or diesel, going from 44.2 cents per litre to 22.1 cents per litre.

The wholesale price will be pushed up 25 cents a litre but it is expected that it would take six or seven days to reach customers in metropolitan areas, or

a week or two for regional areas.

In Euroa, prices at the BP were recorded at 163.9 cents per litre for U91 petrol on Friday, September 23.

By Friday, September 30 the price had risen to 179.9 cents per litre for the same petrol.

Rises in diesel prices were less significant, changing from 207.9 to 209.9 in the same time period.

Prices for both petrol and diesel are expected to continue rising in the coming weeks.

Road safety promotion leads to payday for clubs BOTH Longwood Football Netball Club and Violet Town Football Netball Club have received funding boosts for their efforts to promote road safety in their communities.

They, along with nearly 150 other Victorian football and netball clubs, will share in more than half a million dollars of funding awarded by the State Government and Transport Accident Commission.

Longwood received $7500 from this total, while Violet Town received $1000.

The TAC Club Rewards Program encourages AFL Victoriaaffiliated clubs to educate their players and members on the dangers associated with risky driving behaviours such as speed, drink/drug driving, fatigue and distractions.

Successful clubs will put the money towards a range of initiatives including new equipment and uniforms, updated facilities, and education programs covering topics such as mental health and road safety.

Clubs from across the state were able to apply for the program by showing how they supported road safety throughout the year, including taking part in the TAC Road Safety Round.

Hundreds of clubs took part in the July campaign, donning blue armbands to promote road safety and honour those tragically killed on our roads.

“We’ve done a lot of promotional work and pushing to raise

safety measures through our social media channels too.”

Mr Shiner aims to invest the money into the club’s promising netball program.

“We’re looking to funnel the funding into our netball program and really grow that,” he said.

“Our junior netball has been going really well and we want to keep focussing on growth there.

“We had every age group except Under 11s represented, so we’re looking to get a team for

that division next season.

“We want to give our coaches better access to coaching programs and experiences too.”

The funding announcement caps off a promising year for the Redlegs, who saw Cameron Mooney feature for the side, a finals performance in their juniors and growth in their netball program.

“It’s been a good year for the club,” Mr Shiner said.

“We’re trying to really build up the junior leagues in football.

“If we can develop homegrown talent we think that will end up making a difference with our senior side.

“We had eight kids from the Under 18s step up to our seniors this season which is a great sign.”

The TAC Club Rewards Program is part of a 31-year partnership with AFL Victoria and provides a platform to speak directly with Victorians travelling hundreds of kilometres on the state’s roads every year for training and games.

TAC head of road safety Samantha Cockfield spoke on the impact that Victorian clubs were making by participating in the program.

“It is encouraging to see the commitment from Victorian football and netball clubs to educate the community on road safety and their actions will undoubtedly have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of their members,” she said.

Haines welcomes introduction of National Anti Corruption Commission legislation INDI Independent federal MP Helen Haines has welcomed the introduction of the legislation for the National Anti Corruption Commission by the government into the House of Representatives.

Dr Haines has campaigned for a strong, independent integrity watchdog since being elected in 2019, introducing a bill to create the Australian Federal Integrity Commission in 2020 and again in 2021.

Dr Haines continued the work of the former Independent MP for Indi Cathy McGowan, who also introduced a bill for a federal integrity commission in 2018.

“This is a momentous day and it has been a long time coming,” Dr Haines said.

“It is the first time a government has introduced a bill for an integrity watchdog to parliament.

“Until now, all bills had come from the crossbench or the Greens.

“I am encouraged by what I have seen from the government so far.

“This bill includes many of the same features as my bill for the Australian Federal Integrity Commission, including a broad definition of corruption, the ability to take referrals from the public, one set of rules for all,

“I am pleased to see a commitment to pro-integrity measures including prevention and education functions.

Elements of the bill, including coverage of third parties, prevention and education measures and protection of whistleblowers, have been included since the government began consultations with the cross-

bench over the development of the bill.

“It is clear to see in the bill that has been introduced that the government has listened to the concerns that I and other crossbenchers raised with the Attorney General,” Dr Haines said.

“Genuine and constructive consultation on this important piece of legislation has lead to crucial changes.”

Dr Haines signalled she still holds concerns about some aspects of the bill.

“Under the government’s bill, public hearings will only be held in exceptional circumstances and when in the public interest to do so,” she said.

“It is not clear why the ‘exceptional circumstances’ test has been included and I am concerned it creates an unnecessary extra hurdle when private hearings are already the default.

“I will be looking closely at the bill over the coming weeks to ensure each clause is appropriate and serves a strong, independent watchdog with the appropriate safeguards.”

Dr Haines has nominated to be a member of the joint select committee that will examine the bill before it goes to a vote.

“Throughout this process I have committed to work in good faith with the government to examine the bill and improve it where necessary and I intend to continue that through the committee process,” Dr Haines said.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity and I will be working hard to make sure we get it right.”

The joint select committee should be announced this week, and the committee will report back by November 10, which leaves enough room for the legislation to be passed this year

ARTBOX: A portable exhibition space, ARTBOX, will soon be circulating around the region after council was able to secure it through an infrastructure program.

Portable exhibition ARTBOX coming to Strathbogie Shire STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has announced a portable exhibition space, ARTBOX, will soon be circulating around the region.

Mayor Laura Binks said the initiative, currently undergoing the pilot program in Huon Valley Council in Tasmania, is a unique method to promote professional and emerging artists and makers.

“While providing a professional exhibition and performance space, ARTBOX also gives opportunities for regional and remote communities in Strathbogie Shire to experience and engage with arts and culture,” Cr Binks said.

“This project has been based off the successful program offered by Tasmania’s Huon Valley Council’s pilot

program in Tasmania of the same name and allows for resource sharing relating to programming.

“The box’s design has been improved to enhance its sustainability and features.

Once installed, the shipping container design - ARTBOX - will support community arts and culture projects throughout Strathbogie Shire.

“The schedule and rotation of locations is currently being considered by Council staff,” Cr Binks said.

Cr Binks said council was excited to see how ARTBOX could build capacity and cultural enjoyment for our communities.

Council was successful in acquiring this infrastructure project funding though

Creative Victoria under the Creative Neighbourhoods Infrastructure Program.

Cr Binks said ARTBOX comes after results from a 2021 arts and culture survey showed community support for micro galleries and public art.

“Council looks forward to any feedback and suggestions from the community, especially local artistic and cultural practitioners of all mediums and community arts groups who may express interest in utilising this opportunity and the program development,” Cr Binks said.

Splash park underway

By DIANE GRANT EARLIER this year Nagambie parents and children voted on what water splash park equipment would be attractive to local families.

Residents used Strathbogie Shire Council’s online engagement platform to share their advice on the preferred equipment for the splash park and not surprisingly on top of the list was the water slide structure.

The chosen works are now underway to develop a splash park filled with the community’s chosen play equipment at Buckley Park near the playground.

The toilet facilities in this area have been closed as they are within the construction site area.

The splash park that was to be completed in late September (weather permitting) has been delayed and could be completed later on this year.

Fun for the children will also be the crab and several more spraying apparatuses.

The $1 million splash park is being built by Wacky Water Play who has installed some base pads and steel frames for the fun structures.

The completed Water Splash Park will be a highlight for the young folk and families as is the Nagambie Youth Hub Skate Park, and sports complex in Filson Street, which opened a while ago.

Birds a focus in library’s local art

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa Library continues to provide a space for local artists, currently displaying the wildlife photographs of Bill Harris at the Artspace.

Mr Harris has travelled across the country with his wife, capturing photos of Australian wildlife, particularly birds.

Self-taught, Mr Harris says the passion for photography was felt early in life, but faded as he entered a corporate lifestyle.

“I had my own developer as a kid but stopped at around 18 years old except for some instamatics,” he said.

“I had a corporate job and it was taking over life.

“I spent a bit of money on a camera and went out not knowing what I wanted to take photos of.

“I started to realise I enjoyed the Australian wildlife and started to invest more in that, both with equipment and developing more skills.

“I never took a course or anything, just have continued working to improve it.

“I’ve got a lot better at it over time.

“After going away for a few months I can tell the difference, both with the photos themselves and the process.

“It becomes muscle memory; instead of thinking about camera settings it becomes more automatic.”

His interest in photography has resulted in an early retirement,

Since then, Mr Harris has been able to travel across Australia to pursue his passion.

“I’ve been all across Australia taking photos,” he said.

“My wife and I have just returned from three and a half months away and I think our longest trip has been six months when we went to Cape York.”

To generate an income to allow more artistic freedom, Mr Harris

has started Birds in Focus a website that sells calendars, prints, coasters, bookmarks and more.

“I have commercialised a lot of the photographs, using postcards, calendars, key rings and more,” he said.

“But I do that so that I can afford to put more time and effort into larger pieces for galleries.”

Mr Harris discussed some of the techniques he uses to capture his photographs, as well as his own personal style.

“I don’t go hunting any particular species, I just go to areas that I know have great wildlife,” he said.

“I’m a Canon shooter, and use a variety of different lenses.

“I’m currently using a R5 Canon after making the shift to digital recently.

“Close-up and detailed is how I like the photos.

“It’s like a profile or portrait, but capturing a moment in time in nature.

“Some go more artistic but I

like to have a more natural look to the photos.”

The rewards of this passion are enormous according to Mr Harris, who finds joy in both the process and the final product that he creates.

“There are a couple of images that are particularly rewarding,” he said.

“I have some of endangered species that I might not ever get the opportunity to see again.

“I don’t really have a preference of what birds I photograph, but I enjoy the challenge of little bush birds.

“I get satisfaction from the end product, regardless of what animal it is.

“It’s just rewarding.”

Mr Harris finished by providing some advice for keen wildlife photographers looking to improve.

“They took about a wildlife bubble, and how you want to be outside of that,” he said.

“The larger lenses really help with capturing the animals.

“But it really comes down to field craft and patience.

“The really good guys that capture the action shots have a great understanding of the subject being photographed and could wait for days to get the right shot.

“You need a cooperative species too.”

The Artspace at the library is a Friends of the Euroa Library initiative, providing a space for talented local artists to showcase their creations.

Euroa rail precinct master plan wins funding IT’S so good to see the State Government getting on track and at last delivering $100,000 to fund Euroa’s rail precinct master plan.

The community has long pressed for a voice at the table so the precinct’s redevelopment, as a result of Australian Rail Track Corporation’s Inland Rail Project, connects residents and benefits the town’s historic heart.

Strathbogie Shire Council put the request for funding to me in August 2021, and a few weeks later I asked Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll to meet with the council.

I listed the council’s request for funding in my state budget talks with Treasurer Tim Pallas in February and afterwards with Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan, when she committed to look at the issue with her department.

I put the request to her again in Parliament on August 30.

Congratulations to Strathbogie Shire Council, who are also contributing $30,000 towards the plan costs, and

community for your persistence.

LOCAL grape growers and winemakers are expected to benefit from a new program run by Wine Victoria, providing support to tackle climate change, work sustainably, increase profitability and keep abreast of market standards.

The Growing Victorian Wine into the Future Program is funded by a $455,500 grant awarded to Wine Victoria by the State Government through the New Markets for Food and Regional Produce stream of the Agriculture Workforce Plan.

Agriculture Victoria executive director, policy and programs, Sarah-Jane McCormack, said Victoria produces some of the world’s most sought after wines and the program will provide a one-stop shop to producers looking for clarity and guidance about the ever-changing demands of markets at home and abroad.

“Grape growers and winemakers across the state have been experiencing significant stress with oversupply of grapes, high input costs and loss of key markets,” she said.

“The Growing Victorian Wine into the Future Program addresses these challenges head on, supporting growers to demonstrate the sustainability credentials that the markets now demand.”

The program will include a statewide vineyard health assessment along with a series of regional workshops, tools, and resources available to the industry.

Participants will learn more about redevelopment strategies to modernise and optimise vineyards, ways to step-up productivity, and the benefits of adopting agtech on-farm.

Another major theme of the program is sustainable practices; participants will develop an understanding on how to extend the fruitful life of vineyards for the longevity of the industry.

Chair of Wine Victoria’s technical committee, Kim Chalmers, said she is delighted by the State Government’s support.

“The new program will see a range of activities to improve the environmental and economic sustainability of Victorian wine growers and vineyards,” she said.

SES talks about Euroa flood risks

By GUS RIDDER THE Euroa unit of the State Emergency Service (SES) held a community flood update meeting at the Euroa Community Cinema last Tuesday.

Led by Sue Sheldrick, a respected SES member and CFA captain in the North East region, the meeting discussed critical information about what to do before, during and after a flood event and provided information about how your property may be affected in a flood.

Those in attendance were encouraged to keep updated using apps and websites such as VicEmergency and the Bureau of Meteorology, which provide emergency warnings and information about upcoming rainfall.

The importance of emergency plans and toolkits were also stressed during the meeting, with forward planning helpful for reducing the impact during an emergency.

Flood maps showing vulnerable areas in the region were handed out to the audience, with explanations on the likelihood of a flood provided by members of the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.

High risk areas were identified, such as Creek Drive, Turnbull, Spencer, Foy, Parker, Slee, Dunn and Railway streets.

Frequently used spaces at the Euroa Caravan Park, Rotary Park, land opposite the Memorial Oval and the Bowls Club were also said to be high risk.

Unit controller of the Euroa SES Georgie Cardillo took some questions at the end of the meeting, outlining how the SES can help in emergen-

cy situations.

“We’re here to help in emergencies,” she said.

“Those in Euroa would be aware we have a CFA siren that goes off pretty regularly.

“If that siren is continuously going, turn your radio on or check your emergency app as it will be an evacuation order.”

Presumptive rights scheme opens for forest firefighters VICTORIA’S forest firefighters now have access to a new presumptive rights scheme that makes it easier to access compensation for certain types of cancer.

Under the scheme it will be easier for eligible forest firefighters to access compensation if they develop certain types of cancer such as leukemia or bladder cancer.

It is assumed the cancer arose because of their service as a firefighter, unless there is proof to the contrary, reducing the stress and burden of the compensation process for those eligible.

The new scheme applies to all eligible Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) firefighters.

This includes staff with firefighting roles from a range of Victorian Government agencies, including staff from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water, VicForests, and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR).

Firefighters diagnosed with a listed cancer who do not meet the minimum years of service threshold may still qualify for compensation through the scheme under a special consideration process if they can demonstrate

A BAND of merry musicians, The Pure Drop, will be offering ‘Songs for Ukraine’ a musical medley in aid of Ukrainian refugees will play tomorrow at 1.30pm at the Third Age Club in Euroa.

The band, whose name, it is said, derives from a love of only the best Irish whiskey, formed after meeting at the Girgarre Moosic Muster around seven years ago.

Their first gig was as a Celtic band at the Echuca Celtic Festival, after which they branched out to play an eclectic mix of Australiana, Celtic and old-time favourites.

The line-up includes a harp, guitars, violins, three different registers of ukulele, a banjo, mandolins, mouth organ and, for good measure, a squeezebox.

While most of this merry band lives around Kyabram, a well-known Euroa resident will feature on guitar in the form of

the irrepressible Bernadine Kelly.

The group is a moving feast, playing around Shepparton, Nathalia, Echuca, Girgarre, Kyabram and now - for the first time -Euroa.

Rural Australians for Refugees-Strathbogie Shire (RAR) is delighted to host The Pure Drop.

Painting among the granite outcrops EVERYONE attending the latest Strathbogie Ranges Conversation Management Network (SRCMN) art workshop played with paint among some of the granite outcrops at Ruffy.

Tutor for the day, Ann Cremean, first instructed participants on mixing colours.

It was obvious from the laughter and chatter, that this experimenting with acrylic paints and different brushes was a lot of fun.

A treat at these workshops is always the morning tea and following this, the best part to the day was wandering into a

grassy paddock of eucalypts and granite tors, to find a quiet spot to paint.

Some chose to sit alone to feel into the beauty of their surrounds and experiment with artworks, while others sat in groups of two or three to do similar.

Paintings were shared at the end of the workshop - people expressing delight and insights from their experience of connecting with aspects of the landscape this way.

The final sessions in this series of Awe & Wonder art workshops will be ‘Landscape Drawing and Painting’ with

local artist, Anna Mackrell.

This double workshop will take place in the inspiring surrounds of Euroa Arboretum over two Sundays - October 9 and October 30 at 10am-1pm.

The competitions for the day were all about daffodils and camellias.

Rosalie Wrest won the Daffodil Trophy and Jim Brook won the Camellia Tray.

Entries were all of a high standard, particularly considering the poor weather of late.

Deb Ellis stepped in at short notice to demonstrate some simple floral arrangements which we hope will inspire more entries into the upcoming Euroa Show.

The October meeting will be held a week early due to the show.

The plan is to meet in the garden of Christine John at 33 Atkins Street.

Show and Shine retreat to street “BEST ever” and “organised chaos” were two phrases that were being used to describe the Australian National Show and Shine as it returned to the streets of Euroa on Sunday.

Show and Shine president Ross Holt had spent the past two weeks constructing a detailed plan for the “retreat to the streets” following a decision by the Strathbogie Shire Council that much of the Seven Creeks Park would be too wet to host the annual event.

Thousands of people, shiny cars and bikes packed the streets to absolute capacity, encouraged by fine weather and a sunny twentydegree day, together with the lifting of many previous COVID restrictions.

The show was still run under COVID-safe conditions.

The finely tuned plan unfortunately didn’t even last till sun-up on event morning as a number of stall holders arrived before dawn and decided to set up their gazebos in prime areas close to the centrestage area, which had been allocated to major sponsors of the event.

As others arrived and tried to find their carefully allocated spots, Show and Shine area managers were faced with the task of trying to re-allocate spaces into areas allotted to show cars, which were now arriving.

Hence the early “organised chaos”, but it all worked out in the end.

Car clubs were taking advantage of the weather and 30 Corvettes arrived in Convoy for part of their annual Stingray Run. Over 20 Mercedes Benz vehicles, a bevy of 1920s

vehicles and a great number of motorcycles all added to the show.

Crowds of visiting spectators were building by mid-morning and at around 11:30am, area managers declared the streets of Euroa “full.”

There were just no more spaces available.

Euroa was indeed full, as throngs of happy family groups explored the displays and stalls.

Children with bubble machines, people with dogs on leads and even a man with a performing cockatoo all enjoyed the picnic atmosphere.

Several reports indicated that the Binney Street traders were enjoying a sellout day.

Visiting displays included the ADF’s surprise as not one but two Armoured Protected Vehicles arrived, with the Bushmaster and the Hawkei both on show.

Over in Foy Street, the truck display expanded as expatriate Euroa resident Charlie Palmer and friends arrived after a convoy from Sydney, to display their historic white trucks.

Master of Ceremonies “Whiskas” again entertained the crowd as he directed the 1920s fashion parade, with music on centre stage provided by Mick and the Rockers.

Elsewhere we could find the Eurockafellas near the RSL venue, with several of Euroa youth bands displaying their considerable talents near the skate park, which was conducting its own carnival of events.

prior to her retirement at the coming state election in November.

Strathbogie Mayor Laura Binks spoke at length about the Euroa Show and Shine and council tourism director Amanda Tingay described the impacts of the show’s tourism attraction of the local area, saying that figures put expenditure at $100 per visitor.

Australian National Show and Shine Vice President Ray Read said that the work ethics of the event committee were exceptional.

“Everybody went beyond the call of duty to make the show happen in demanding circumstances,” he said.

“Throughout the day, there were a number of challenges thrown at our people with many decisions being made on the run.

“At the end of the day, everyone was exhausted, but extremely pleased with the results.”

In addition to the core committee, a total of over 100 volunteers took part in gate keeping, as parking attendants and other essential jobs.

The vast majority of these came from local clubs and organisations.

At the time of writing, full details are still to be announced, including the major award winners.

However, the winner of the Australian National Show and Shine Best in Show was a bright green Holden HX Utility, which could best be described as “brilliant” and “quirky.”

With an immaculate paint job and attention to detail, what else could you call a vehicle that used bullets for door locks and handles?

Guests happy to display their pride and joy THE streets of Euroa were filled with visitors from all over the country, with many showing off their cars and motorcycles while many more came to simply spectate.

Members of the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria were one group proud to display their vehicles at one of Euroa’s major events, with fantastic vehicles lined up towards the Railway Street end of Binney Street.

“It’s been a while since we have been able to get to Euroa due to COVID,” Maurice from the club said.

“The last time we were

here it was in the streets too, so we’re familiar with the format.

“We couldn’t have gotten luckier with the weather here so it’s been great so far.”

The club members were able to display most of their vehicles together, ranging from 1951 models to brandnew, however some were scattered around the different sites.

“We would have preferred to be all together but its okay, we’ve got a good range here,” Maurice said.

Motorcycle clubs and bike enthusiasts were spread out along Kirkland Avenue, in-

cluding some award winners on the day.

One bike stood out, a 1971 bright yellow and chrome Yamaha bike that looked brand new.

Russell, the owner, was extremely proud of the motorcycle’s condition and that it had won an award.

“I believe the award is for the best overall bike,” he said.

“It’s a rare bike, it wasn’t released in Australia.

“Its 50 years old now but it still looks pretty good doesn’t it?

“The secret is in the polish, I use a German brand that keeps it looking brand new.”

UNDER THE HOOD: There was a lot to admire on Sunday, with thousands of vehicles paraded around Euroa.

New CEO welcomed at Nagamabie Healthcare

By DIANE GRANT NAGAMBIE Healthcare has appointed Sheila Brandie as the new chief executive officer.

Ms Brandie was welcomed to the facility by Nagambie Healthcare (NHC) Board and staff last month and said it was a big decision to decide to come back to Victoria from Queensland to work in a smaller health facility, but she hoped it would bring back her passion of delivering health care to the community.

“I felt the humidity in Queensland over the two years I was there,” she said.

“I missed the cooler climes of Victoria and when the job opportunity came along I accepted the challenge and applied for it.

“My mother lives in Bendigo so being closer to her was also an important decision maker in moving back to Victoria.

“My son Noah is a keen rower, so he was pleased to move close to Lake Nagambie to follow his passion on the water.”

Ms Brandie was raised near Mildura and knows what living in rural communities entails.

Her passion was nursing, and she followed in the steps of her mother and sisters who were all nurses.

After high school she trained at the Repatriation General Hospital in Heidelberg.

“The experience of learning and caring for predominantly the diggers/veterans gave me a

great appreciation for the commitment the service men and women gave our country,” Ms Brandie said.

After completing her training Ms Brandie worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital - Melbourne, Mildura Base Hospital, then stints at Royal North Shore Hospital - Sydney, Cabrini Hospital - Malvern and Mercy Hospital Werribee.

Ms Brandie returned to Mildura in 2010 and was encouraged to enter the aged care sector.

“This enabled me to apply all my clinical skills to enhance the quality of life to our older population,” she said.

“I worked for various community and corporate aged care organisations, never losing sight of what is important to the client and family.

“I then moved to Gladstone Queensland as chief operations officer for a home care/NDIS organisation and residential manager for another aged care organisation.”

Ms Brandie said her priorities included completion of the current refurbishment program at the hospital, and applying for funding for further improvements, as well as adhering to the recommendations from the recent Royal Commission findings into aged care, adhering to COVID-19 regulations and handling the current shortage of staff that was affecting many workplaces across the nation.

Nagambie Lakes Community House going strong

By DIANE GRANT THE Nagambie Lakes Community House (NLCH) for many years was housed in the old Maternal and Child Welfare building in Prentice Street, Nagambie.

It relocated to the old Catholic Presbytery building next to St Malachy’s church on the corner of High and Young streets, Nagambie 18 months ago.

NLCH members are very happy in their new home and expressed their gratitude to the Strathbogie Shire Council for its support over their 10 years of occupancy in the Prentice Street building and grounds.

The members also provided thanks to the old Presbytery restoration group for allowing them to use their beautifully renovated building for the Community House Hub. The NLCH committee of management has enabled the house to provide many courses, activities and events for the hub, plus a community garden for those interested in gardening in the Prentice Street yard.

On Wednesday, September 21 the NLCH held their annual meeting and election of office bearers for 2022-2023.

Most of the committee were re-elected unopposed.

Victoria Police Acting Sergeant James Rapa from Seymour Police Station came along as the guest speaker.

Sgt Rapa explained briefly his career path of 13 years in the Victoria Police force then took questions from the floor.

Questions were raised about ‘hoons’ and lake users who ignore rules and cause problems for other lake users and residents.

The audience also questioned who locals should call when the

town swells to three times its capacity over summer and these waterways troubles begin.

Sgt Rapa answered that residents should contact water police, shire rangers and that park rangers may assist if available.

Other issues raised included people speeding past school crossings, a lack of staff at local police station, education in local secondary schools and the increase in domestic violence across the shire.

How do police handle stress related issues on the job and other issues?

Sgt Rapa said that police personnel are doing the best they can with staffing issues and a lack of resources, but regard their community policing seriously and are only too willing to assist when possible.

Sgt Rapa also spoke on the horrific two truck crash at Violet Town to which his personnel had to attend to help with the crash investigation and emergency.

He handed out pamphlets on many issues that police face daily and who to contact on various issues like farm crime, firearms, domestic violence and vehicle use.

Getting back to normal AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will continue to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks back at the biggest stories from the late 1940s, with the region

beginning to readjust to normalcy following the Second World War. Reintegration into society and the workforce were the major talking points in this era, represented by headlines, advertisements and government notices in the Gazette.

In the November 6, 1945 edition, one of the front page headlines reads “Welcome Home to Servicemen & Women.”

One advertisement from the January 22, 1946 edition shows off a 56-page booklet on how to return to civil life.

A notice from February 26, 1946 edition outlines a preference in employment for members of the forces. That same edition also describes a ‘Food for Britain’ appeal.

1945 saw the death of Prime Minister John Curtin.

Sports news was still a big

drawcard in 1946, with the football games involving Euroa, Longwood, Avenel and more all featured.

Euroa Yard Dog Trials set for show THE Euroa Sheep Dog Club, on behalf of the Victorian Yard Dog Association, will be hosting this year’s Euroa Yard Dog Trials at the annual Euroa Agricultural Show.

In 2022, the yard dog trials will be a two day event, running on both Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23.

The novice event will kick off at 7.30am on the Saturday and is expected to run through until about lunch time.

This will be followed by the ‘Halsall Open’ - the main event for top class entrants.

The Halsall Open has now become an annual event after the inaugural running of this event in November 2021 and is named in honour of Graham and Nancy Halsall, the original founders of the Victorian Yard Dog Association.

It’s also hoped that last year’s inaugural winner of the Halsall Open - Geoff McDougall from the Hay Working Dog Club, will be in attendance this year, along with Graham Halsall himself.

Sunday, October 23 sees two classes being run.

One is for maiden entrants where the handlers may have experience but the actual dog is inexperienced in yard trial work.

The other will be an encouragement class, where both new handlers and dogs are able to trial to gain confidence, learn the rules and gain general yard dog trial experience.

Innovation to plug Victoria’s mobile blackspots

District News ACTIVITIES IN AVENEL OCTOBER is a big month with special events, the beginning of term four, cricket back and the State’s ‘Seniors Festival’ which is celebrating 40 years.

This Saturday, October 8 is the Avenel Primary School fundraiser ‘The Avenel Stampede’, starting at 6.30pm.

Early spring sunshine and rains make it a beautiful time to be walking and cycling in Avenel.

INNOVATION will be the key to address regional Victoria’s mobile blackspots according to a plan devised by the Liberal Party and the Nationals.

Under a Liberal and Nationals Government, Victorians in areas with poor mobile coverage would be eligible for a rebate to install mobile boosters in vehicles, homes and businesses.

The subsidy is part of a $150 million Connecting Country Communities program which will see better mobile coverage and broadband services for regional and rural areas.

Leader of the Nationals and Shadow Minister for Regional Victoria, Peter Walsh, said addressing coverage issues would take far more than mobile towers.

“Parts of regional Victoria have put up with second-class mobile coverage for too long, and more towers isn’t the only way to help solve this problem,” Mr Walsh said.

“We need innovative technology to deliver better coverage to country communities who rely on mobile services for everything from business to keeping in touch with their loved ones.

“It’s particularly important for smaller rural communities where we’ve seen banks and government services move to online-only - it leaves people who can’t get a signal behind.”

The Connecting Country Communities Program would also fund works to strengthen mobile towers, allowing people to stay in touch during emergencies.

“Recently we saw Victorian communities left without mobile coverage in the Black Summer bushfires and the storms in June and October last year,” Mr Walsh said.

“This program will work to make the state’s mobile coverage more resilient.

The $150 million program will address several issues plaguing country communities including mobile blackspots, slow and unreliable broadband services as well as disaster-proofing mobile towers.

“Regional Victorians are tired of services that drop out and mobile blackspots in their daily commute, which are at best an inconvenience and at worst, a matter of life or death,” Mr Walsh said.

After a long and difficult winter, the course staff and volunteers had done a great job to present the course in pretty good condition considering the weather leading up to the event.

The tournament commenced with the mixed Pineshurst Event which was won by Erica Mercer and Bill Wright with 77 5/8 from Freda Edwards & Rose Wishart 79 ½ and Deb Cox and Gary Ritchie 80 5/8.

Saturday saw 56 players compete in nice spring weather for the Burton’s IGA & Liquor sponsored four ball Best Ball Par Event.

Michelle Thompson & Melissa Eddy +2 won the Ladies Event from Dee McMartin and Justine Collins.

A three way countback was required to separate the Men’s winners, Chris Burke and Aaron Hins from Scott Watson and Lucas Paul Runners Up and Mark Corradin & Gary Ritchie in third all on plus five.

The 18 hole H J Goldsworthy handicap Trophy was won by Jarred Smith from Avenel with 78/73 Division one handicaps up to five.

27 Holes Scratch Event was won by Euroa’s Matt Mills with 109 from Alexandria’s Luke Heard on 112.

The 27 hole handicap went to Cam Roper with 114/113. Mark Corridans won the nine holes handicap.

The 27 hole scratch event was won by Laurie McMartin on 122 while Gary Ritchie won the handicap event 121 Net 113.

Ian Richardson from Seymour took home the 9 hole handicap on 39/37.5.

Division three for handicaps 15 and above

saw Andrew Cullen take out the scratch event in a play off from Kialla’s Chin Soo Chang while Paul Jones collected the 27 hole handicap.

Frank O’Connor won the 18 hole handicap with 93 Net 78.

The nine hole handicap went to Mark Harrigan from Avenel.

It was great to see such a good field of quality golfers compete in this prestigious event, congratulations to all winners and thanks to Tournament Directors Justine Collins & Wendy Edwards as well as the volunteers on the mowers and in the kitchen and bar. Unfortunately, more wet weather is forecast for later in the week which will present golfers with challenging conditions on the weekend, but with better weather to come, our golfers are eager to get out and enjoy our wonderful course.

Twilight commences this Friday from 3.00pm onwards and next Saturday it’s Stroke Monthly Medal.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB WE played a combined stableford event on Saturday which saw Kevin Fiorini claim the win with 36 points - one ahead of Dale Smith and Lyn C with the Prez collecting the runners-up prize in a count back.

Line balls went to Lyn, Tim Batten and Graeme (Toysy) Toy. Dee Wright was NTP on the 14th and Tim was closest with his second shot to the 7th.

Dale Smith was the very lucky winner of the Avenel Meats meat tray.

Four men ventured up the freeway to play in Euroa’s Spring Tournament on Sunday and 3 of them collected prizes.

Jed Smith claimed the prestigious H J Goldsworthy memorial trophy for the best 18 hole nett score of the day and also won the A grade handicap.

Mark Hannigan just edged out Tim Batten to win the 9 hole handicap for C grade leaving Timmy to collect a ball.

Dale came home empty handed but he had a couple of collects on Saturday so all was not lost.

Juniors are up and running again this Saturday with the second round of the Junior Club Champs to be played so hope to see a good roll up for that.

All positions are vacant and nominations should go on the notice board as soon as possible.

Presentation night will be held on Saturday the 22nd October.

We will have a BBQ and members are asked to being a salad to share please - time to be advised but most likely straight after golf.

We also have the Melbourne Cup Calcutta on Monday, October 31. $80 per table draws a horse with prize money for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE final monthly medal for the season was run and won completing the field for the gold medal play off in a fortnight’s time.

The winner was Greg Whiteman returning to form with a bang, Whiteman hit the ball tee to green without any trouble and finished off his good work with a red hot putter for an 89-19-70 this was enough to win by two shots and walk away with the medal.

Runner up went to the ever consistent Michael Nolan producing some quality golf with a 82-10-72 rounding out the top three was the steady Shaun Bryant once again carding a top finishing result 83-10-73.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Nolan again having the right club for the 3rd, Daniel Hall playing his best shot of the round onto the 8th, David Love with a sublime iron stalking the 13th and Dave Fullager going close with a nicely timed shot to the 16th.

Euroa cricket club gears up for another successful season NOW that the weather is warming up and the football boots are off, thoughts are turning to cricket.

Euroa Cricket Club is gearing up for the upcoming season with the senior competition commencing next Saturday October 8, weather permitting.

Junior competition will start the following week on Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15.

Last season Euroa Cricket Club had three senior teams in the Cricket Shepparton Association and two junior teams.

The two junior teams made it to the finals, with the U16 winning the premiership.

U16 co-coach Tomas Fogarty says he is looking

forward to working with this year’s team, aiming for back-to-back success.

Euroa CC also had a veteran’s team last season who competed in the Veterans Victoria competition. Players 60 years of age and over are eligible to play in this comp with the team was made up of new and retired players.

The fitness and agility of these players has developed over last season, and they are looking to build on last year’s growth.

Veterans cricket is the fastest growing section of cricket, and anybody interested in playing should contact the club.

Euroa Cricket Club continues to cater for all ages and genders starting at five

years of age with the Woolworths Junior Blasters program, and from then players eight years of age move to an intra club comp.

Both of these groups will start on Friday October 21.

These young players start to develop their skills before finally joining the junior competition teams and then onto senior teams.

Many of the junior players play senior cricket at the same time as playing junior games.

This leads to the development of junior players, and they gain invaluable experience from playing with senior players.

State-wide, Cricket Victoria said there is over 211 000 registered players of all ages with over 28 000 of them be-

ing female participants.

Once again last season, the club had a number of junior players playing at representative level.

Club president Lucas Paul said this is an important avenue for them to display their skills and gain experience outside the club environment.

This is part of Cricket Victoria & Cricket Australia’s developmental pathway and who knows where this could lead for any of these young players in the future.

Practice for the various groups is held on several nights, junior coaches Owen Robertson, Tomas Fogarty and Lachie Cooke said U14 and U16 have begun on Tuesday nights at 4.30pm.

Seniors are training

on Thursday nights from 5.00pm and Veterans train on Saturday morning and Wednesdays.

The club has a team of volunteers who have commenced working on the ovals to bring them up to standard for the upcoming season.

A lot of work and many, many hours go into ground preparation and the standard of the grounds attests to their dedication.

The club is very lucky to have the use of several ovals if they are needed and this is unique in the Cricket Shepparton competition.

Euroa and District Badminton Association finish season with finesse MONDAY, September 12 saw the grand final for the Euroa and District Badminton Association hotly contested by teams Murray and Ovens.

Murray reigned premiers over Ovens by 21 points 239218, 7 games to 3.

It was a great effort by Ovens to make the final as they had been sitting below the top four teams for most of the season but made a great come back in the last few rounds of the competition.

As part of the grand finale for the night, the association presented two other main awards for players in several categories.

Our “best and fairest” award was deservedly won by Alex Tsymbalov who had shown complete committement to the badminton assocation and his team, showing up each week to play, and help set up and dismantle nets etc and has been a great asset to the EDBA. Our “encouragement” award was won by Tyler Kipping for again, turning up each week and improving as the season progressed.

Di Mackrell as usual, was instrumental in running her coaching sessions for beginners/new playes while the main game was being played. Di and the whole association has been pleased with the progress these players have made, ensuring we have players for the future competition, some of whom were drawn on during the course of this year’s competition.

The Association would like to recognise and thanks the committee for ensuring the smooth running of the cmpetition for the year, and to all the parents, helpers, onlookers each night who encourage everyone to play. We look forward to an even better comp in 2023 and keep an eye out in early March for the AGM and for the next season’s details.

Goulburn Valley golf championship first round NUMURKAH Golf Club was in excellent condition for the Goulburn Valley veteran golfers’ first round of the 2022 championship on Monday, September 26.

After the cancellation of the 2020 & 2021 championships it was expected that a bigger field than the 63 contestants would be in attendance.

The weather remained true to the forecast with mild conditions and the chance of up to just one millimetre of rain.

This brought out the umbrellas just after the half way mark and lasted about the time it takes to play one hole.

Some excellent scores (net strokes) were recorded and home ground advantage was telling in the results.

A grade winner was Ron Smith of Numurkah with 71 from Greg Austin, Mooroopna with 73.

B grade winner was Darryl Sheridan, 69, from Allan Newby, 71, both from Numurkah.

C grade winner was Bill Murphy, Mooroopna, and his score here is not a misprint, 60; from Syd Roughsedge, Numurkah, 73.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 114 metre long, 18th hole where C-grader Bill Murphy, Mooroopna, showed us all how to do it with Allan Farrell, Kialla, A-grade, and Hugh Gunn, Numurkah in B-grade, registering the best shots in their respective grades..

Chris Chittick awarded life membership with Hockey Victoria after many years EUROA local Chris Chittick has been on the top of the Hockey Victoria committee’s list for recommendation for several years now, however, we have respected her wishes to receive recognition once her time on the board had finished.

Chris has contributed heavily to Hockey in Victoria over several decades, a talented player and coach touring many Australian and Victorian Masters Competitions since the 1990s.

Chris has contributed

heavily to her local association holding the position of president for Euroa Hockey Club for several years and in 2014 received a life membership to Goulburn Valley Hockey Association for her contribution.

Chris has held various positions on committees for VWHA and HV, including: • VWHA Open, Under 21 and Under 19 National Championships Organising Committee member; • VWHA State Team Secretary and Zone Day match committee member

• Club and association - Strategic Planning, Constitution and By Laws Review committees; • HV Women’s Masters Committee member; • Hockey Victoria Board Member 17+ years.

Chris is renowned for having been a standout director, with an outpour of praise for her from former colleagues and fellow committee members.

Chris is a staple of Euroa’s hockey club and surrounds, and it is high time that her efforts are awarded on such a scale.

She has been supportive and caring, giving genuine regard to the wellbeing of fellow Hockey Victoria staff and consistently going above and beyond to support key events facilitated by staff over the years.

ON Saturday, October 1 Euroa Bowls Club hosted a pennant practice match with Stanhope, Violet Town and Euroa with the weather holding out for the day and the sun shining most of the time.

Euroa President Richard Noble welcomed everyone to the club, hoping all would have an enjoyable day, which would conclude with a BBQ and fellowship afterwards.

Before play started Richard asked all to observe a minute’s silence in memory of Life Member Lorraine Walters who passed away on Thursday.

Lorraine had been one of our Lady associates Presidents for a number of years, catering coordinator and pennant player over her membership, before going to live in Kyabram.

Euroa will play in a practice match at Shepparton Park with the Avenel bowlers and then on Saturday, October 15 the Saturday Pennant will start, with Euroa’s division one team playing Shepparton Golf at Euroa, division four away at Seymour and division six away at Shepparton Golf.

Thirty one bowlers played in last Wednesday’s social bowls and winners were Jann Watters(s), Maree Stevens, Dot Lomer.

Social bowls will be on today at 1pm.

ery to good health after his stay in hospital.

MIDWEEK: Midweek pennant play postponed due to weather Division three were all geared up for their first pennant match for the season last Tuesday, when the weatherman decided that the rain on Monday night made the green unplayable.

Their opposition, Avenel, had travelled up the Hume highway to Euroa to play but were unable to have their first game of pennant for the season.

Here’s hoping this week will see the games start again with Euroa playing at Shepparton Park.

Next week all other divisions will start with Euroa division one away at Shepparton Golf, division three home to East Shepparton and division five away at East Shepparton.

Local Sport Aerobics team bring home national title REVIVAL Aerobics studio Shepparton have brought home the gold at the School Aerobics national champions in Broadbeach, Queensland.

Including young talent from Euroa and surrounds, the team endured multiple qualifying rounds including regionals finals, state finals and then moving on to the national finals based on their scored successes.

Sport Aerobics is a highintensity performance sport that combines elements from dance and aerobic

gymnastics to create a 1.30 - 2 minute routine to music, where athletes show elements of flexibility, power and strength through various skills such as push ups, splits and jumps.

Routines can be soloist, pairs or part of a team and are performed in front of a judging panel where they are judged on both technique and artistic value.

Coaches Sean Reynolds and Daniel Johnson have both been competing and coaching in Sport Aerobics for well over 10 years, both have won numerous state

and national champion titles on the years, Sean represented Australia at the 2015 FISAF World Championships in Martinique.

Revival have been extremely successful this year, having opened their new studio and brought home national titles in the same season.

Revival Aerobics Studio will be recruiting new competitive squad athletes for the 2023 season in late early November.

Rodeo star aims for rookie title

LOCAL rodeo star Adanni Walker has been on the road for the last five months touring Queensland on the rodeo circuit.

Adanni says she has achieved quite a lot of what she’d hoped for this year, winning highpoint junior cowgirl in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA), coming in third in the finals for average juniors, competing open, finishing second in stand ins and will now be taking to the road again on the back of her recent success to take on the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) open finals.

The APRA NFR open finals aren’t for another month, but Adanni will be once again touring the Northern rodeo circuit on her way to the big dance.

These will have been Adanni’s first Northern tours, competing at Charters Towers, Mount Isa and Townsville, to name just a few.

Her horse Doctor carried Adanni to a second at Cloncurry, Australia’s single highest paying rodeo.

Returning from her Northern run, Adanni competed at the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) national finals, where she was able to bring home the win.

Two weeks ago, Adanni was able to bring home two saddles from the Australian Barrel Horse Association (ABHA) in Tamworth, a competition that ran for almost a week.

She was very happy with her performance there, winning maturity, describing her success as a “pretty big deal”, as Adanni was able to come

Her horses Doctor and JoJo carrying her to victory in the maturity and second divisions.

With all that time on the road, some may get sick of being away from home, but not Adanni, who’s mother is there by her side the whole way through.

“It’s been a really good year, I’ve been really lucky, my mum’s the one carting me all around.”

“People always ask me who I travel with and how I get around everywhere but I’m so lucky I’ve got my mum.”

Adanni says she feels very lucky to have the support of her whole family behind her, and feels it helps to propel her to the successes that she’s seen so far.

She has been very happy with her horses this year, their performances speaking for themselves.

Adanni will be going for her rookie title this year, an award open to those who have competed the whole season, the winners is determined by the participant with the most points or most money won throughout the season.

“There are a few girls around including myself that will be going for it this year, so I’m trying to get to as many rodeos as I can”.

Adanni’s first stop on her next tour North will be the Bourke APRA rodeo, and Euroa wishes her the best of luck in her bid for her rookie title.
