A push to be sustainable
Inflation squeeze THE 1.75 per cent Victorian Fair Go Rates cap and increasing inflation is expected to impact council spending across the state, including the Strathbogie Shire Council. With the Consumer Price Index rising 1.8pc in the June quarter to 6.1pc last Wednesday, Mayor Laura Binks expects there to be “challenges” for council to operate within the cap. “Managing levels of service without increasing rates is always a challenge for a small rural shire like
Council works hard to make ends meet under tight g rate cap p ours,” Cr Binks said. “We are constantly challenged by keeping rates as low as possible for our community.” The Fair Go Rates system allows Victorian councils to apply for a higher cap above the cap set by the minister; however, there is no indication that council has made an application of this nature. Cr Binks discussed the 2022/23 Council Budget and
said that allocations for each project align with the standard 1.75pc cap. “Strathbogie Shire Council works extremely hard to minimise rate increases, while continuing to offer the services and complete the projects that make our municipality such a great place to live, work and play,” she said. “Our 2022/23 Budget is based on a 1.75 per cent increase in the average rate
per property, which is under the State Government’s ‘Fair Go Rates’ legislation. “The rate increase allows for maintenance of existing service levels, funding new initiatives and the allocation of sufficient funds for the continuing strategic renewal of Council’s infrastructure. “We work hard to keep rate increases to a minimum, while creating great outcomes for our community.” Residents have been
tightening their belts when it comes to spending, with the higher costs of fuel due to the war in Ukraine, the escalating price of groceries, and resources such as electricity and gas to heat their homes also rising. To curb inflation, the cash rate has risen 1.25pc in three months and Reserve Bank Australia (RBA) governor Phillip Lowe expects it to peak at 2.5pc (currently 1.35pc). ■ Continued page 3
