Tidy Towns and Sustainable Cities Awards, with judges declaring that “Euroa is leading the way when it comes to sustainability”.

Initially focussed on litter reduction, the awards now recognise and reward grass roots projects that drive innovation and cause

others to act.

Euroa scooped the prize for its many innovative and sustainability-based projects, including: • the landscape restoration works at the Arboretum; • the interactive spaces showcased in the design of Binney Street; and • and the Solar Pergola installation which now provides clean, cheap power for renters in the

heart of Binney Street.

Local volunteers from some of the sustainable projects gathered together last week at the Euroa Arboretum to celebrate the award.

Euroa Environment Group president Shirley Saywell spoke about what it meant for Euroa to be recognised with the award.

“The award recognises the energy and creativity behind small town projects

which inspire and promote sustainability principles,” she said.

“Euroa has secured a reputation for its generous volunteers, its environmental achievements, and its push for good design outcomes.

“This focus and determination continue to deliver results and reinforce Euroa’s status as a town of workers and winners.”

Senator McKenzie slams regional cuts in budget THE new Labor Government is continuing its vendetta against rural and regional Australia with the confirmation it will abolish the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), according to the Nationals’ Victorian Senator and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Transport and Regional Development Bridget McKenzie said.

The Wodonga-based Senator said the BBRF was a highly popular program which supports projects in rural and regional communities to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional and remote communities into

the future.

The fund has provided tens of millions of dollars for projects across the North East over recent years, including $4.4m for Wangaratta’s aquatic centre redevelopment and over $2m for developments at the Wangaratta Turf Club.

“The Labor Government continues to prosecute the mistruth that regional funding projects are a waste when these projects actually deliver social and economic benefits to local communities and our nation as a whole,” Senator McKenzie said.

“The BBRF has delivered in spades for regional

Victoria and it is shocking that Labor has axed this highly successful program which has transformed lives and livelihoods.

“This is nothing short of political bastardry and demonstrates, once again, that Labor could not care less about regional communities.

“Victorian federal Labor MPs Richard Marles, Libby Coker, Lisa Chesters, Sam Rae and particularly the responsible minister, Catherine King, should hang their heads in shame.

“After the Albanese Government’s decision to provide $2.2 billion for the disastrous suburban rail

loop in Melbourne, nearly 90 per cent of the Victorian infrastructure spend in Labor’s budget, the axing of the BBRF is another kick in the guts for regional Victorians.

“It becomes clearer every day to us that creating jobs, driving economic growth and building stronger regional and rural communities into the future is not a priority for the Labor Government.”

NOT IMPRESSED: Senator Bridget McKenzie has slammed Labor’s abolition on the Building Better Regions Fund in the federal budget.

New plan to protect North East land UNDER a new plan by Trust for Nature an indicative 100,000 ha of Victoria’s nature on privately-owned land will be targeted for protection by 2030, including much of the North East.

Some 18 focal landscapes across Victoria are identified in the plan as being the areas in most need of further protection to give ecosystems, animals and plants dependent on private land the best opportunity to survive in the face of climate change.

This includes areas such as the Mid Goulburn and Eastern Riverina, which cover North East Victorian regions such as Euroa and Nagambie.

Currently about 110,000 ha of freehold land across Victoria has been protected.

Trust for Nature has released its new Statewide Conservation Plan, which provides goals and targets for strategic conservation on private land across Victoria over the next decade.

In the face of biodiversity and climate crises it’s more important than ever that scarce resources are placed in the areas where they can have the most impact.

Hence why Trust for Na-

ture has prioritised the most important habitats to protect.

The Plan identifies 18 landscapes (13.5 per cent of all private land in Victoria) across the state that will make the greatest contribution towards conservation on private land, helping to save vulnerable plants and animals.

It is informed by the conservation work done by many other organisations including the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning; Zoos Victoria; Parks Victoria; and catchment management authorities.

Trust for Nature’s conservation science advisor Dr Doug Robinson said the plan complements the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 recently released by the Australian Government, which commits to protect and conserve more than 30 per cent of Australia’s land mass.

In Victoria, 78 per cent of native vegetation on private land is rare or threatened.

“We can’t rely on national or state parks to prevent species extinction,” Dr Robinson said.

“We need the support of landholders on freehold

The Statewide Conservation Plan also identifies the animal and plant species that will most benefit from protecting private land and therefore drive the areas that are the focus for Trust

Haines’ welcomes funding , critical of other measures

By GUS RIDDER INDEPENDENT Indi federal MP Helen Haines has welcomed this week’s federal budget’s retention of previously announced funding for important local projects she had advocated for.

This included the $80 million in federal funding promised to the Albury Wodonga Regional Deal and $9.8 million for road upgrades in Mansfield, promised by the former government.

“During the election, crucial projects were promised to Indi by the former government, and through my discussions with new Infrastructure Minister Catherine King I have been able to ensure they are still delivered,” Dr Haines said.

“The Albury Wodonga Regional Deal was announced by the last government but never appropriated and could have ended up on the

chopping block, but I made sure that funding continued.”

But Dr Haines said the budget fell short when it came to funding for a new hospital on the border.

“We know the Federal Government does contribute to building hospitals, but we need the Victorian Government to stand up and make sure the NSW and federal governments can also come to the table and deliver a world class, single site hospital on the border,” she said.

She also criticised the government for the lack of new funding for roads, especially in the aftermath of the floods experienced across the North East.

Two new funding streams have been announced for regional Australia, including the Growing Regions Program, which will provide new opportunities for regional local councils and not-for-

profit organisations through an annual open, competitive grants process.

A new regional Precincts and Partnerships Program will be a new funding mechanism for larger-scale projects to transform a place to benefit communities in regional cities and wider rural and regional Australia.

“I look forward to speaking more with Infrastructure Minister Catherine King about how Indi can benefit from this fund,” she said.

Dr Haines slammed the government for reducing the amount of money available through the new funds compared to previous regional development funds, instead funding election promises through closed grant programs.

“The bulk of new regional funding is confined to closed grants programs which will be used to fund

Labor’s election promises,” she said.

“Labor criticised the previous government for similar noncompetitive grant processes and has talked a big game on bringing integrity and transparency to funding for the regions.

“It’s not good enough to just do the same thing again.”

Dr Haines said despite the billions of dollars earned from commodity exports providing some relief for the budget, the switch to renewables was also proving itself a benefit already.

“The move to renewables is already a boon for the Australian economy, and has the potential to be an even bigger part of the economy, especially for regional Australia,” she said.

Dr Haines expressed disappointment though at the lack of direct relief for household rising living costs.

Hospital to stay open: Symes MEMBER for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced almost $350,000 in funding for Euroa Health during a visit to the community hospital last week, saying that the struggling facility will remain open under a Labor Government.

Joined by Labor candidate for Euroa Angela Tough, Ms Symes met with Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter and chairman Linsey Siede to discuss the new developments for the hospital.

The $350,000 investment will be used towards replacing the acute unit’s 72-year-old roof, increasing the facilities water saving capacity by installing two new rain tanks, and delivering an emergency communications upgrade with CCTV. This investment is on-top of the recently installed x-ray machine that reinstated radiology services to the area following the funding of $152,320 from the Labor Government in October 2021.

The funding will be allocated through the latest round of the State Government’s Regional Health Infrastructure Fund (RHIF).

Tree Management Plan adopted

By GUS RIDDER STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has adopted their Tree Management Plan following the completion of a community consultation period.

The draft for this plan was initially endorsed at a council meeting in August, ahead of being shared with the community.

Council’s Tree Management Plan will document the management strategies they have in place to ensure the longevity and quality of trees within the shire’s urban environments, as well as the risk management framework that will be applied to mitigate risk to the community as much as is reasonable and practicable.

Strathbogie Shire Council is responsible for more than 15,000 trees throughout the municipality and this plan aims to address items such as risk area mapping, inspection and maintenance standards, reference material and service levels.

The consultation period brought forward several comments and suggestions from shire residents.

One Euroa resident spoke about how the plan should involve other local organisations providing their expertise.

stroying any tree /wildlife habitat,” they said.

“Look after yourself, don’t destroy the nature that we have in this country town, just to replicate the jungle that increasing numbers of disenchanted city/suburban expats realise that they are missing.

“We also need to provide food sources for wildlife, so for every ratepayer, a gift of a native tree or shrub from the arboretum and an area each year to plant in would be a positive move.”

Give credit where credit is due

THE next month will be an incredibly frantic and stressful period for students across our region who are smashing out their VCE exams.

Our region has been incredibly resilient of late, negotiating the challenges of COVID, lockdowns and recent flooding.

Our students, the leaders of the future, have been right at the fore, taking these challenges head on and making their communities proud.

I’m sure there’s been plenty of stress over the past couple of years, but to make it this far is testament to your dedication and resilience.

I wish each and every one of you the very best.

No matter the outcome I’ve seen firsthand how amazing and inspiring the youth of our region are.

Good luck everyone and congratulations on your amazing achievements.

STEPH Ryan has thanked the Euroa electorate for working ‘together’ to ‘achieve so much’.

Politics is often done with smoke and mirrors.

This is a classic example.

In her advertisement she claimed to have achieved improved mobile phone coverage within the electorate.

I would like to thank our federal independents Cathy McGowan and Helen Haines for the work they did on this as it was that effort that turned a longstanding failure to provide services under the LNP into a success.

Beyond that, a reader could be forgiven for thinking the Nationals signed every other cheque.

We need some truth in election advertising in our state because they didn’t.

The funds for all the named programs have actually been provided by the

Labor Government.

Specifically, the funds which produced the x-ray machine at the Euroa hospital, the infrastructure commitments at the Euroa Secondary College and primary school, and even the upgrade of the saleyards have all been funded by a Labor Government.

The LNP was in power for the four years preceding these commitments and the electorate of Euroa saw none of the improvements.

Thanks should also go to the Labor Government for the new trains on the North East line.

This commitment delivers on yet another failure on the part of the previous LNP governments.

Our community in the electorate of Euroa is resourceful and purposeful.

We have indeed achieved a lot ‘together’.

It would be better if Ms Ryan really did give credit where credit was due, rather than engage in a concerted exercise in duplicity.

Nats’ plan to save country roads from ruin THE Nationals will attempt to revive crumbling country roads as part of a $288 million plan to re-establish the Country Roads and Bridges Program.

Under the plan, annual grants of up to $1.5 million will be available to Victoria’s 48 rural shires and regional councils over the next term of government to fund the restoration and renewal of deteriorating road and bridge infrastructure.

The program will aim to provide motorists in regional Victoria with smoother, safer roads.

The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said maintaining local roads is one of the largest cost burdens on local government, especially small councils with large road networks.

“This additional $1.5 million a year will provide a major

“Regional councils like Strathbogie and Benalla have

Ms Cleeland said reinstating the Country Roads and Bridges Program was a real solution to bring regional Victorian roads back from ruin.

“This is in addition to our $10 billion commitment over 10 years to properly fund Victoria’s road maintenance and make country roads safer,” Ms Cleeland said.

Bike trail for Balmattum The State Labor Government has confirmed funding for a local mountain bike trail as part of a plan to help make Northern Victorian an even better place to live, work and visit.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced last week that $241,600 would be allocated for the Balmattum Hill Mountain Bike Trail Planning Project as part of the latest round of the Regional Infrastructure Fund and Investment Fast Track Fund.

“I’m delighted to announce support for this project to help our towns and regions reach their full potential with more jobs and exciting projects,” Ms Symes said.

The Balmattum Hill Mountain Bike Trail Planning Project will enable the development of a universally accessible trail for mountain bike riding at Balmattum Hill, located on the outskirts of Euroa at the gateway to the Strathbogie Ranges.

In total, there are 38 projects in rural and regional communities that will share in $20 million in funding.

More details confirmed for Euroa Show AS per the front page headlines in last week’s Gazette, the 130th Annual Euroa Show is planned to be held in just a few weeks.

The main show day will go ahead on Saturday, December 3 with some yard dog trial events still to be confirmed for Friday, December 2.

There have been some slight alterations to the classes in some sections in the pavilion which have been inevitable due to the show being held at the different time of the year.

In the cut flower section, irises will be replaced with gladioli - different classes for each; and there will also be a new class for a small table centre Christmas arrangement.

In the fruit and vegetable section, there will be two additional classes - two artichokes; and six strawberries, hulls on.

As a feature in the pavilion, several of the committee members are working on a cereal grain display which will be something not seen at the Euroa Show for many years due to the time of the year it is being held.

In the outside sections,

the committee is still waiting on confirmation of alterations to sections/ classes and once this is done, all entries will again open online.

Anyone who had placed entries prior to the original show date will still have those entries in the system but additions can be made.

If there are any locals who have something special they would like to display/exhibit statically or demonstrate, please let the committee know.

There will be plenty of space on the arena with the horse events postponed until March next year.

As always, the show are looking for volunteers to assist on the day in both running/manning events and general help pre and post show day as well.

Facelift for Euroa swimming pool

RAILWAY DAMAGED: The Euroa Miniature Railway will remain closed after suffering extensive damage in the recent floods.

SWIMMERS will get to enjoy a series of upgrades to the grounds of the Euroa outdoor swimming pool when the season opens later this year.

Renovations are currently underway in the garden area and the vine covering the area has been removed to open up the area.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the historical fountain garden section is being refreshed after it was gifted to council by the Leo Club decades ago.

Cr Binks said the outdoor swimming pools were crucial facilities for our community.

“These spaces not only create enjoyment, but they are a fantastic resource for

learning to swim and other educational practices,” she said.

“We are looking forward to seeing the freshened-up Euroa pool which we will also feature an updated barbecue area - the perfect setting for a summer evening with the family.”

The project, as well as other pool upgrades and footpath works, has been funded through the Commonwealth Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program.

Mini Railway still recovering THE Euroa Miniature Railway will be closed for an extended period of time after suffering extensive damage to the track during recent floods.

According to the railway’s president Wendy McDonald, the recent damage was the worst in their history.

“After 28 years of operation this is the worst we have been hit during floods,” she said.

“Luckily the club members had placed all our engines up and they have had no damage incurred - so all

the kids out there will be pleased to know that.

“The clubroom and kitchen were flooded but we did manage to put most items up and only floor clean-up will be needed when we are given permission from the shire.”

The track’s ballast has all been washed out and there still remains big gaps and holes around large areas of the track.

It is expected this will take some time to repair, and in the meantime locals who are out walking are recom-

mended to take care near this area.

There has also been damage to the fencing of the area.

“Once the shire lets us know that we can move ahead, we will come up with a plan to get stuck in and start the repair work,” Ms McDonald said.

“As we are a small club we will be looking for assistance from interested locals.”

Keeping Longwood sun smart MEMBER for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has announced that Longwood Primary School will be able to acesss the the latest round of the $2.5 million Shade Grants Program.

The grant of $636 will help Longwood Primary School to buy hats and sunglasses for students to assist low income families.

“These grants will help students enjoy a healthy outdoor lifestyle while having the necessary shade to protect them from the sun,” Ms Symes said.

“The Andrews Labor Government has helped hundreds of schools and community groups provide the protection Victorians need to prevent cancer and stay sun-smart and will continue to do so into the future.”

When used alongside other sun-protection measures such as sunscreen and appropriate clothing, shade structures can reduce overall exposure to UV radiation by up to 75 per cent.

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with two in three people diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.

In 2020, melanoma was the fifth-most-common cancer in Victoria, with 2582 new cases and 271 deaths.

SUN SMART: Longwood Primary School will receive funding from the State Government to buy hats and sunglasses for students to keep safe in the sun.

Through this program, the State Government is working to ensure more Victorians keep active, enjoy the outdoors, help them to be sun-smart and prevent skin cancer.

The program is offered once a year, across two

grant categories: School Shade Grants and Community Shade Grants.

Since 2015, the program has provided more than $20 million in funding for 2301 grants for community groups and Victorian government schools

COVID-19 Whilst the wider community has celebrated the changes in the management of COVID-19, sadly little has changed for the Staff, Residents and Patients at Euroa Health.

Once again, the facility reopened on 25th October 2022 following another COVID-19 outbreak with the support of the GVH Public Health Unit the after two residents unfortunately tested positive to COVID-19.

GraniteHill Resident Mr. Bob Goldsworthy expressed his concern of noncompliance of PPE and RAT testing over the weekends, after his own visitor conducted their RAT test then reached for a N95 mask only to be told by another visitor at the front door “you don’t need to do any of that on weekends”. Sometimes I sit and watch visitors and can clearly see they are placing residents at risk due to poor compliance to the requirements of entry.

Bob explains that he is more likely to see visitors without a mask on weekends as simply there is no one at reception at weekends which is the sad reality and ongoing challenge faced by Euroa Health.

Due to funding pressures, we cannot man the desk every day CEO, Cherree Hunter says “our staff at Euroa Health continue to RAT test before each shift and wear as set out by the Department of Health a mask or a combination of a mask and shield in the event of an Outbreak and this

applies to our visitors and everyone shares the same responsibility”. Not only does non-compliance to these simple steps allow for more opportunities for COVID cases in communal living, but it’s simply disrespectful to our 75 Residents who call GraniteHill home.

Bob agrees with the statement that Euroa Health issued recently that Residents have had enough of these rolling shut downs and all the challenges associated with a shut down, so more than ever we need everyone to be diligent in undertaking the required steps to ensure we do not get a surge in COVID infections in the facility. So, next time you visit Euroa Health regardless of the day, please remember you are entering the home of all our Residents and Bob may well be watching.

“Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in Australia - that’s why this program is so important to ensure we are protected from the harmful UV rays that could contribute to skin cancer later

in life,” Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said.

The program forms part of the Labor Government’s Victorian Cancer Plan 202024, which sets a target to halve the proportion of Victorians diagnosed with preventable cancers by 2040.

MPs call for expanded roadside drug testing LOCAL members of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party have said the state’s roads will be safer if more Victoria Police are authorised to perform roadside drug testing.

Member for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell and Member for Western Victoria Stuart Grimley have led the charge for expanding police drug testing abilities.

At the request of the Justice Party, the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) released a costing to expand drug testing powers to all general duties officers.

Ms Maxwell said the $28.5 million cost identified by the PBO for the period 2023-2026, plus training costs of $4.9m, was

a smart investment that could help reduce the road toll by closing a loophole that stops police from administering an on-the-spot drug test.

“Illegal drug use is present in about one third of all road fatalities, so this investment would improve safety on our roads,” Ms Maxwell said.

“Drug driving is a scourge on our roads and puts the lives of innocent people at risk every day.

“The lack of widespread training is affecting police ability to respond, and extending drug testing capacity to all general duties officers means we’ll get more drug-affected drivers off our roads.”

Fluid Test (POFT) and Oral Fluid Test (OFT).

“We want the current loophole closed so police can respond more quickly and intercept these dangerous drivers,” Ms Maxwell said.

“We’ve been raising the issue of drug testing consistently over the past four years, but it’s time for a commitment from the government.”

The two MPs have put their concerns about the incidence of drivers’ increasing drug use to consecutive police ministers in the past two years.

While discussions with former minister Lisa Neville and current minister Anthony Carbines were said to be constructive, the

Justice Party MPs say the time to expand Victoria Police drug-testing capacity had come.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) reports that in the past five years, 41 per cent of all drivers and motorcyclists killed whose bodies were tested had drugs in their system.

TAC research has also shown that 25pc of Victorians who use recreational drugs admit to driving under the influence.

A driver influenced by methylamphetamine - or ‘ice’ - is said to be 200 times more likely to have a collision.

The PBO estimates the 10-year operational cost of expanded drug-testing capacity would be $217m.

Squirrels on the doorstep of Hurley Street property A SILHOUETTE flashing through the canopy above, a rustle of leaves and a slap on a nearby tree trunk - that’s how Donna and Charlie from Hurley Street, Longwood first realised they had gliding possums living in the trees around their home.

They didn’t just see these nocturnal visitors once; it became a semi-regular occurrence, especially when some garden trees, like Red Ironbark and lemonscented gum, were in flower.

There are several types of marsupial glider in the Longwood district, so Donna and Charlie couldn’t be sure which exact species they were seeing.

After alerting Strathbogie Ranges Conservation to their find, local ecologist Bertram Lobert visited the Hurley St property and was able to confirm that these animals were Squirrel Gliders (scientific name Petaurus norfolcensis), a threatened species in Victoria.

Donna and Charlie were excited with the finding.

“We were thrilled to learn we had something so special right on our doorstep,” they said.

“Now that we know, we’ll make even more effort to look after our local gum trees and we’ll probably put up even more nest-boxes as homes for the gliders.”

It may well be that Longwood Township is a local stronghold for the species.

Not only are there still good numbers of trees of a variety of species, but the township habitat is well connected to the surrounding landscape, where gliders also occur.

Mr Lobert provided some further background on the local critters.

“The biggest immediate and preventable threat to these amazingly cute little acrobats is the loss of their woodland habitat,” he said.

“Their survival depends almost entirely on trees - for food, shelter and breeding. “Every time a tree is toppled, their neighborhood gets a little smaller.”

GVW and Greening Euroa recognised at awards GOULBURN Valley Water (GVW) has been nominated as a finalist in a state-wide water industry awards program, earning plaudits for their development of community projects such as Greening Euroa.

The nomination is part of the Australian Water Association’s Water Awards, under the Organisational Excellence category, which recognises initiatives driving prosperity, sustainability and transformative change, and external programs which create beneficial outcomes for communities.

GVW’s submission highlighted its work on two key community project partnerships and one significant infrastructure project Managing Director Steve Capewell said GVW was thrilled to see projects recognised at a state level which were designed to have positive impacts on community liveability, wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

“Our partnership with Strathbogie Shire Council and Euroa residents will see a unique,

“Our collaboration with the Burnanga Indigenous Fishing Club to develop the Dunyak Moira community fishing lagoons in Merrigum is a fantastic opportunity for us to transform an unused asset into something that benefits our communities and encourages

people to connect with nature and recreational activities.

“Both of these projects are something we’re incredibly proud to be part of, and that we know will bring a lasting legacy for Euroa and Merrigum communities in years to come.”

Both projects have seen progress over the past couple of years, with stage one of Greening Euroa complete and a plan underway to seek funding for stage two, which will make treated recycled water more

widely available for recreational/sporting access for irrigation.

More than 100 fish relocated from channels and lakes are now living in the filled 50 megalitre and 10 megalitre filled lagoons at Dunyak Moira, with access works for a carpark, accessible bridge and more to be carried out in the near future, to join the existing fishing pontoons ready for a community opening in 2023.

The third project was the $10m replacement of the Shepparton Wastewater Management Facility’s High Rate Anerobic lagoon cover replacement, which helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimise the lagoon’s zero-oxygen treatment process.

The judging criteria involves looking for original or innovative projects with outstanding features that demonstrate economic, social, environmental or cultural benefits.

Winners for the awards will be announced this week on November 3 at the Victorian Gala Dinner and Awards Night.

Line dancing fun in Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT LINE dancing has become a popular recreation and exercise program for many people and members of the Nagambie Senior Citizens Club, who have been running sessions during the week at their clubrooms.

For a few years now the club have joined forces with other line dancing groups for some social dance days.

They joined with line dancers from local groups in Seymour and Kilmore last Saturday at the Nagambie Seniors hall for a social and fun day of dancing, chatting and catching up with friends from each town.

Sue Pearson from Seymour led the dancers with lively music for the day and everyone enjoyed the dancing to

Garden Club competition returns

THE Euroa Garden Club will once again hold their ‘Over the Fence’ competition during November.

From Monday, November 7 until Friday, November 11 members of the club will walk around and pick the gardens that they think are worth of consideration.

Judging will then take place on the November 18.

There are three categories as part of the competition; best small garden, best large garden, and the best new garden (five years or under).

The club acknowledges that the weather hasn’t been very helpful for mowing lawns and weeding, but flowers are looking pretty at the moment and trees are green and lush.

A bit of dead heading and a quick tidy-up of the garden and all should be well.

With the town recently named as the ‘Tidiest Town’ in the state, this year’s competition fits in perfectly.

Trophies will be awarded to both the winner and runner-up in each category, with the winners also receiving a monetary prize.

Results will be announced at the November’s farmers market as well as an edition of The Euroa Gazette.

New self-serve library for Avenel THE new self-service Avenel Library opened last Wednesday, creating a space for the local community to browse, borrow and return books, DVD’s and magazines.

Goulburn Valley Libraries set up the mini self-service library at the “old police residence” at 23 Queen Street.

The historic building is managed by the Jubilee Park committee of management which had been renovating the old building with volunteer labour and money raised through local fundraising and an assortment of government grants.

Goulburn Valley Libraries chief executive officer Kevin Preece spoke about the new library.

“Avenel is one of the busiest stops for our mobile library, but only gets a visit once a week for a couple of hours at a time,” he said.

“We received a grant through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund to provide a selfservice option to help support the Mobile Library service and quickly found that the community wanted a bit more than a self-service vending machine.

“The Jubilee Park Committee approached us to see if a better solution could be to locate a small self-service library in the Old Police Residence, previously used as the neighbourhood house.

“The committee has been busy renovating the building and we have used the Living Libraries funding to set up a small library in the front rooms

as Rhyme and Storytime or Craft and Coffee.”

The mobile library will continue to visit the school fortnightly and the mobile library librarian will be at the new library every Wednesday afternoon for customer service and to maintain the library and the collection.

President of the Jubilee Park committee of management Anne Douglas said the new li-

brary would be an enormous benefit for the area.

“This is huge for Avenel,” she said.

“We are a growing community, and we are delighted that we will get a new physical library to support the mobile library.

“Instead of two hours a week we should be able to open this library to the public several days a week.”

She served as president and committee member and worked tirelessly for their organisation and the ideals she believed in.

In her memory, the Community House held a gathering on Friday for those who wanted to watch a live streaming funeral for Maureen in Melbourne.

It gave those there the chance to celebrate and honour her life.

Nagambie residents celebrate Seniors Week

By DIANE GRANT RECENTLY, the Nagambie Senior Citizens Club turned 50 and their members gathered together to share experiences and memories of many of those years.

The Nagambie Senior Citizens Club hosted a ‘Tea and Chat’ morning on Monday, October 24 to follow up this event, for not only members but local senior guests.

The function was provided for by a grant from the Strathbogie Shire as part of the Seniors Festival.

Around 50 locals attended and enjoyed the sumptuous morning tea and a chat with friends.

Club president Peter Branagan welcomed everyone to the morning and Jill Branagan talked about how the morning tea eventuated.

Guest speaker on the morning was Anna Close, co-coordinator of the Nagambie Lakes Community House.

She explained that the Community House comes under the Neighbourhood House Umbrella program and that there are 400 or more in Victoria.

TIME FOR A CHAT: Nagambie Lakes Community House coordinator Anna Close spoke to the local seniors at their ‘Tea and Chat’ morning tea.

Ms Close spoke on her early life in Sweden and of her work experiences in many fields and many places and how she met her Australian husband Phil in one of them.

They moved to Australia a few years ago and have three children.

Three years ago, the Community House applied for a grant for a co-coordinator to work with its volunteer groups.

Anna Close was successful in obtaining that role and has been an integral part of the Community House team since then.

“I am amazed at the skills and abilities of so many people in this town,” she said.

“I have tried to tap into those skills.

“Two of my objectives are to see what the needs are here and secondly what the skills are and to encourage those with them to share them.

“The Community House has 19 active groups and we welcome locals to join them.”

Ms Close took questions from the floor about their involvement with the community and was thanked by Peter Brana-

gan for graciously coming to the event and sharing an insight into the local Community House.

On Saturday a group of the Nagambie Line Dancing group hosted dancers from Seymour and Kilmore for a social line dance in the Nagambie clubrooms.

The Nagambie Senior Citizens Club also offers many activities for seniors and they can be enjoyed during the week.

Little athletics is coming to Nagambie reserve A COUNCIL grant has helped enable a long-desired community program come closer to fruition - Little Athletics in Nagambie.

The group, who are working to establish the club in Nagambie, received a $5000 grant as part of round on of the Community Grants Program.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the initiative to create the club came after a push from local parents.

“Our community grants have the capac-

ity to kickstart many different projects and we are thrilled to contribute to all the fundraising the parents have undertaken,” Cr Binks said.

“Kids in Nagambie and surrounds can now learn a variety of new athletic skills through a planned program.

“This will be the first Little Athletics Club in Strathbogie Shire and it is a credit to this community that they have so many people offering to volunteer to assist these young budding athletes to learn and participate in

a variety of athletic formats.”

The club will be open to children 12 years and under for its first year, with the hope to expand as required.

The first season kicks off on Saturday, November 5 and the committee are busy organising uniforms and merchandise, as well as installing a long jump and triple jump pit.

Goulburn-Murray Water establishes flood recovery team WITH a large part of the region affected by recent floods, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has established a dedicated recovery team to support its customers and communities.

The GMW flood incident and recovery team was set up last Monday with the aim of supporting GMW customers, investigating and repairing impacted infrastructure and supporting other agencies.

GMW general manager of incident and recovery Daniel Irwin said they were committed to supporting customers through the impacts of flood.

“Our team has already begun identifying flood-impacted assets and reviewing what works will be needed to repair them as a priority,” Mr Irwin said.

“We’ll be developing interactive maps in the near future

so customers will be able to see the impacted assets and the works we’ll be doing to restore them.”

GMW’s Tatura, Kyabram, Shepparton and Cobram customer service centres have now returned to their standard operating days and times, while the Kerang and Rochester centres remain closed.

Mr Irwin welcomed customers to contact GMW to discuss their flood recovery needs.

“We also want our customers to know that we are there to help them through this time - we will work closely with impacted communities over the coming weeks and months,” he said.

GMW will replace any water entitlement records and statements free of charge, and records can be sent to an alternative address if re-

quired.

To ensure the privacy of customer information, GMW will verify the identity of those that request new copies of records.

Support through hardship in paying accounts is also available, with GMW committed to working with customers to implement a payment plan that works for them.

Notice of a Development Plan Application and Subdivision Council has received an application to approve a Development Plan that will allow for subdivision of land on Euroa Main Road known as 72 Golf Course Road Euroa- Euroa Gateway.

We wish to inform the community and surrounding neighbours what will be taking place. The development was planned up to eight years ago.

The majority of the land was rezoned from Farming Zone to Low Density Residential Zone and the Development Plan Overlay was applied over the whole site to facilitate the orderly residential development of the land.

The Environmental Significance Overlay is applied to part of the land to reflect the location of the buffer to the Euroa Wastewater Management Facility, and the Vegetation Protection Overlay to protect significant vegetation located on the site and adjoining land.

The amendment process begun in 2014 and was approved in 2015. The community was engaged in the rezoning with the proposal; the amendment was made available for public inspection at that time.

The submissions from the public at that time went to an independent body called Planning Panels Victoria, which is common practice and a democratic process for residents and other interested parties concerns to be heard, and then Council and the State Government were able to allow the rezoning to go ahead.

This application is for Approval of a Development Plan. This component is for information only.

Once the Development Plan application is approved, an application for subdivision will begin to occur (Exempt from Notice), and then the area will begin to be developed for housing.

Golfers get back into the swing of things

KEEN FOR THE GREEN: Golfers are excited to get back on course once the water clears up.

GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB THE Euroa Golf Club is holding a beginners and high handicap female golf competition for women of all ages of similar ability.

With modified rules and only six holes to get around, the emphasis is on fun, getting outside, having a go at something new and enjoying Euroa Golf Club’s outstanding facilities.

The game will take place on Saturday mornings through November 6, 13, 20 and 27, tee off at 10am.

Clubs and buggies are available to loan from the club upon request.

Club members will be on hand to assist with scoring and to give golfing tips, and lunch will be enjoyed at one of Euroa’s many

fantastic venues for a discussion on the day’s golfing.

At only $5 a game and plenty of prizes to be won, the ladies of Euroa and surrounds are encouraged to come along and have a go, you may discover a hidden talent.

SQUASH BENALLA SQUASH CLUB Section one played on October 26: THE Barkly Street Vets defeated Caslek Computing & Cabling three rubbers to one.

Greg Murphy defeated Rod Firmer 3-0, Josh McNair lost to Chris McNair 2-3, Bechy Pastuszka defeated Liam Margat 3-0, Anakin Pastuszka defeated Ben Flynn 3-0.

Over on the other court, Benalla Bobcat defeated Dr Stuart Jones Dentist 4-0.

EUROA GOLF CLUB AFTER nine days of rain totaling over 100mm, 13 diehard golfers made the most of a “dry” Saturday to play in the club comp.

With 10 golfers in division one and three in division two, the higher handicappers in the club stayed away from the par comp no doubt wondering if they would ever get a chance to putt on such a wet track.

The women golfers stayed home and kept their feet dry.

As is the case, in such demanding conditions, the tough get going and the cream rises to the top with Paul Robinson (+2) taking out the comp with a magnificent even round, parring the course.

The runner up and only ball winner was Gary Ritchie (11) with -2 on a count back from Matt Mills (0) and Cam Roper (2).

Despite the soggy, tough conditions, some good scores were posted.

Next week, Saturday November 5, is the first round of the Club Championships for the men and a stableford comp for the women so let’s hope it dries out enough to get the mowers on the course otherwise a lot of time will be spent looking for golf balls.

With the amount of golf we have missed this year there will be quite a few rusty swings happening out there next week.

The Euroa Golf Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Monday November 14 at the clubhouse commencing

at 7.30pm and there will be positions available for members to go on the committee.

The L & F Edwards Mixed Fourball was to be played on Melbourne Cup day but due to the wet conditions had been pushed back for a fourth time to a date yet to be determined.

The bar will be open for the day with sweepstakes for the Cup held also.

The Power Industry Association (PIA) are now coming in 2023 from Friday October 20 to Sunday October 22 to play their golf championship that had to be cancelled this year due to the floods and wet conditions.

All we need is a few days of sunny, windy weather with a lot less rain and with a bit of luck, the golf club can get back into a full swing again.

But due to our dedicated ground staff there were enough holes for a composite course with the Nagambie membership playing nine holes twice to complete an 18 hole competition.

The winning golfer on the day was Tim Baldwin, no stranger when it comes to winning in tough conditions Baldwin shot 82-9-73 to beat Phil Hageman on count back, Hageman had a return to form for his 9118-73, playing a solid round from the opening hole was Dean Brown finishing top three with 84-10-74.

The nearest the pins were on the 3rd and 9th holes with players having two opportunities to go close playing nine holes twice, Chris Roberts sneaking one up to the front of the narrow 3rd and Tim Baldwin showing he was the best player on the day claiming the 9th.

The Euroa Labor Day Tennis Tournament wins state award THE Euroa Lawn Tennis Club has won the award for most outstanding tennis tournament at the annual gala awards event.

The 2022 Victorian Tennis Awards winners were announced last Thursday Night with 15 award recipients and fellow finalists recognised in front of the Victorian tennis community.

The Victorian Tennis Awards, run by Tennis Victoria, align with the Australian Tennis Awards and winners with a national category are now eligible to be nominated for the 2022 Newcombe Medal (The Australian Tennis Awards).

Along with several other nominations the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club made the final for Tennis Victoria’s most outstanding tournament.

Club president Bob Furphy, along with committee member, tournament organiser and wife, Gayle Furphy attended the gala evening at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

Live streamed around the state, Tennis Victoria chief executive officer, Adam Crameri, made the announcement that Euroa had won.

Mr Furphy spoke glowingly about the Euroa community, the committee, sponsors and a long list of volunteers who supported the event over a long period of time that lead up to this award.

Mr Crameri was thrilled with recognising the award winners and finalists in front of the Victorian tennis community.

The new awards in 2022, the Victorian Player of the Year was won by John Peers after his most recent efforts of 2022, winning the US Open Mixed Doubles with partner Storm Sanders and a bronze medal in Tokyo at the Olympics with Ashleigh Barty.

The Coaching Excellence - Development award was won by Michael Logarzo from ML Tennis (Parkdale

and South Yarra).

In the athlete categories, the Junior Athlete of the Year Awards were won by Roisin Gilheany (Port Melbourne) and Saalim Naser (Roxburgh Park) with Jarrod Broadbent (Beaumaris) winning the 30+ Tennis Senior Award.

The Most Outstanding Athlete with a Disability award was won by Tokyo Paralympian and four time Grand Slam Champion, Heath Davidson.

The volunteer achievement award was won by Nadine Maloney from Hawthorn Tennis Club and Excellence in Officiating award went to Christopher Dellas (Mulgrave).

In the Club Awards, the winner of the Most Outstanding Club or Centre was the Coburg Tennis Club and the Most Outstanding Tournament was the Labor Day Tournament held at the Euroa Lawn Tennis Club.

The Coaching Excellence - Club or Centre Award was won by Vicky Lee at Slamin’ Tennis and Fitness at Doncaster Tennis Club, Vicky Lee’s Advantage Autism program also won the Most Outstanding Inclusion initiative.

In the schools category, Aitken Creek Primary School (Craigieburn) won the Most Outstanding School award and winning the Supporting Tennis - Local Government Award was Maroondah City Council in Melbourne’s East.

After announcing his retirement in 2022, Dylan Alcott was announced as the 2022 Victorian Spirit of Tennis Award winner.
