Police station push NATIONALS deputy leader and Member for Euroa Steph Ryan is pushing for an upgrade to Euroa police station.

She firmly believes a Euroa station rebuild should be on the agenda so she has invited the state’s Police Minister to visit to inspect the 40 Kirkland Avenue asset.

Speaking in parliament last week, Ms Ryan said Euroa’s police station was no longer fit for purpose and needed to be rebuilt.

“The building in Kirkland Avenue is small, old and inadequate for modern

policing,” Ms Ryan said.

“I feel confident that the Police Minister will see that it is no longer fit for purpose if she accepts my invitation to visit the station.”

Ms Ryan said the station was so small and cramped it was not possible for police to separate victims from perpetrators when

undertaking interviews.

“Victims and perpetrators are able to hear each other giving statements, which makes it more difficult for victims to tell police their story,” Ms Ryan said.

“This is a terrible position for everyone and is particularly troubling for those who have been the victims of violent crime.

“The station’s interview room is also located at the back of the building near the rear exit door, which means

that an officer needs to be with an interviewee at all times to ensure they don’t escape out the back door.

“This is time consuming and a poor use of resources in a five-person station.”

The building also has just one toilet, which is shared between officers, criminals and victims.”

Ms Ryan said the size of the block meant there was scope to undertake a rebuild of the station at the existing site to ensure local police

had a modern and safe working environment.

“Our local police do a wonderful job, often in trying circumstances,” Ms Ryan said.

“I have invited the minister because I want to see them properly supported.

“Having a modern and safe workspace that is equipped to service our community properly shouldn’t be an afterthought.”

Bernie enters hall of fame

AROUND town, everyone knows Bernie Walker’s name, and 2022 is definitely his year as he just has been inducted in the Shearers Hall of Fame.

Mr Walker, our local poet and also one of Euroa’s most active community members, said it was a honor of a lifetime.

“I am very happy, and also humbled, but honored at the

same time,” he said.

“It’s like when I got my OAM in 2016, I knew I was in the pipeline but it was still a surprise.

“The family nominated me.”

Mr Walker said he wouldn’t have lived his life any other way than the way he did.

“I’m glad I went shearing, and I had principles,” he said.

“I am proud of the reputation I had for clean shearing, always being trustworthy and honest, and I never shore anywhere that I couldn’t go back to.”

Mr Walker is 48th in the Shearers Hall of Fame, and four other men from Euroa have had the same honor as him, John Harris, Dick Duggan, Bill Harris and Brian Morrison.

He was born and bred in

Euroa, started shearing at 16 years old and played an active role in establishing Golden Shears Australia and the bi-annual Test Matches between Australia and New Zealand.

This created the opportunity for Australian shearers to compete world-wide representing their country.

He is also a life member of Euroa Apex and the Golden Shears World Council.

A giant magpie in the streets of Euroa

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOCAL artists Steve Tobin and Tank Art are famous in the region for their massive sculptures of native birds such as kookaburras, cockatoos, fairy wrens and now the duo is looking at building a gigantic magpie for Euroa.

The previous sculptures were realised at the request of Danny Thomas from Ulupna Island Pastoral - Mr Thomas also funded their realisation - and can now be seen at 610 Ulupna Bridge Road on the Murray River.

The Tank and Tobin sculptures duo also has just been commissioned to make a pelican for Numerkah and a six meter wedge tail eagle.

But this time, the magpie would stay where she will be created, in the Strathbogie Shire.

“We have been making birds for private commissions for 12 months and we would love nothing more than to bring some art to the Strathbogie shire,” Mr Tobin said.

He said the Longwood Action Group had already got funding to bring back the old water tank that used to fill up the steam trains in order to build the new bird and that he hoped to involve as many local artists as possible.

“We hope this we hope will be the start of a sculpture park in Longwood and part of a sculpture trail that starts in

Avenel and follows the Hume corridor through Longwood, Euroa and Violet Town,” Mr Tobin said.

“Being the home of the Euroa Magpies we thought a Magpie would be a great start as we have such a strong Football/netball club and would get the young crew interested in art.

“We plan to build the Magpie on a plinth that could be easily moved and it may live in the Sevens Park but could be easily be moved for match days or moved into town for special events such as the Euroa show or wool week.

“We would like to remind people that art funds come from arts grants and do not come out off rates payers’ money.”

The artistic duo had the idea

to create a challenge in order to fund the magpie sculpture, asking people to take a picture with the most people in it with their wren sculpture, and the winner will receive $250.

“This is a teaser for hopefully the magpie we want for Euroa,” Mr Tobin said “It is for non-profit clubs or a charity of a family’s choice.

“We need to support the Euroa Community Action Group and the Euroa chamber of commerce and to get the funding from the Strathbogie Shire Council to make the Magpie happen.”

Mr Tobin said these projects wouldn’t see the light of day without volunteers.

“It takes a lot of work from volunteers who donate their time to achieve these goals,” he said.

“We hope this is the first step for the people get to see how just driving past a giant Magpie that stands at three meters tall makes you smile and feel good.”

The cockatoos were a massive hit when they were still in front of the White Hart Pub in Longwood and Mr Tobin thinks the magpie in Euroa might also be a sensation.

“We also hope that tourists will stop and get a photo of the magpie and have a beer in the pub buy some groceries and keep calling in on their way to wherever they are going,” he said.

“There is a downside though, we might get a few Collingwood supporters in town to get a photo with the magpie, but if we put the bird in front of the dentist it should keep them away.

“We think the Shire of Strathbogie needs to get a bit more cool stuff happening.

“There are so many great artist just sitting in the wings waiting to showcase their art, and all living in or from the shire.”

Mr Tobin said this new magpie project had already had some good feedback on social media.

“We have had some absolutely great feedback on Facebook,” he said.

“Watch out, you may see a cameo appearance of one of our birds in the next week or two in town.”

Sergeant Robyn Reed at Euroa police said she was looking forward to an upgraded station.

“There have been a number of issues identified with the building in its current state,” she said.

“Renovations and other considerations are being looked at currently.”

The Euroa station is indeed in dire need of major upgrades, and a good paint job being the less important element as it is lacking safety for victims but also for offenders and police officers.

Officers at the Euroa police station are facing daily cases of victims coming to the station and not feeling safe because of the facility’s exposure to threats and lack of secure holding facilities or safe place onsite.

Also, the station has only one toilet, and offenders, victims and officers have to share the same restroom.

Moreover, the fire extinguisher is in the main thoroughfare hanging off a wall and the station is not event equipped with a stove or any cooking facilities, but the microwave officers bought themselves.

Local Jim Perry said he had experienced first hand the derelict aspect of the Euroa police station.

“For most of us, the police

station flies under the radar,” Mr Perry said.

“It’s a sign and a building that we notice when driving down Kirkland Avenue.

“Not until recently when I had occasion to have some forms that required to be signed before a police officer as a witness that I have become aware of the poor facilities that our law keepers have as a work place.

“I believe the police station was built in 1970/80s and was designed as a two man police station, now it is staffed by up to six officers and a single toilet facility must service all staff and any detainees.”

Mr Perry said he believed the police station should be up to date with its time.

“Policing has changed since the station was built, now policing involves a lot of counselling of residents who have been subjected to domestic violence or need help with drug abuse,” Mr Perry said.

“Euroa police station has no suitable facilities where this can be done on a confidential basis.

“Euroa is a thriving little town on a major freeway with a healthy share of tourists visiting our town, both of which add to the need for a visible police presence.

“The State Government is no doubt aware of Euroa’s police inadequate facilities and should be called on to upgrade to create a premises appropriate for policing in 2022.”

Women to be celebrated at Yulong Stud event STRATHBOGIE Shire Council will celebrate International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8 with a special event at Yulong Stud.

The event will begin at 9.45am where guests will enjoy morning tea in the breezeway of the stud’s Barn 2.

This will be followed by a parade of the stud’s horses for guests to enjoy.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said International Women’s Day provided an opportunity for everyone to reflect and celebrate the role women play in the world.

“As a woman in local government, I continue to

be mentored and inspired by the women in this field who have come before me,” Cr Binks said.

“Pam Robinson OAM, Shire President of Violet Town when I was a young child, has encouraged me in nominating for both council and mayor.

“Pam’s founding role with Landcare and her commitment to representation and equality in government is an inspiration and I am grateful to have grown up with this example of strong female leadership.”

Cr Binks said she hoped the current Strathbogie Shire Council could inspire more women, gender-diverse and young

people of all abilities to consider standing for council in the future.

“If we are to govern in a representative way, we need to ensure that people of all backgrounds are supported and mentored to participate,” she said.

Nomad Art Gallery on the move to Avenel AFTER two years in Euroa Nomad Art Gallery has now moved to a permanent home in Avenel.

In 2019 Nomad Art directors Angus and Rose Cameron relocated to the Strathbogie Shire and brought their Darwin based gallery to Euroa.

Nomad Art specialise in limited edition prints and textiles from remote Australian art centres.

The gallery represents First Nations artists from around 30 Aboriginal art centres across northern Australia, including the ancient lands of the Kimberly Ranges, the glimmering sands of the central and western deserts, the monsoon climates of the Top End and azure waters of the Arnhem Land coast.

Nomad Art operates an online gallery and is also open by appointment in Avenel for individuals or small groups who wish to view the collection or purchase high quality limited edition Australian art.

A recent innovation for Nomad Art is the establishment of a studio workshop in Avenel, where Angus and Rose will host visiting artists and facilitate art workshops.

WELCOME BACK: After two years in Euroa Nomad Art Gallery has now moved to a permanent home in Avenel.

The first of these will be presented by renown Australian paper maker Winsome Jobling in a 2-day introductory paper making workshop on March 19 and 20.

The papermaking class walks students through the process of turning plant fibre into handmade paper and onto experimental ways of incorporating imagery into the wet sheets.

Over three days Basil Hall will tutor participants in various techniques for creating beautiful collagraph prints.

Mr Cameron said that people are more aware of the richness and wisdom of Aboriginal

cultures and what they offer to contemporary society.

“We hope to raise awareness of cross-cultural conversations and promote appreciation and reconciliation” Mr Cameron said.

“In doing so, we acknowledge the Tunguraung people and members of the Kulin Nation and have great respect for their continuing culture, country and heritage”.

“Our key philosophy is to promote awareness through the visual arts by supporting cultural expression and intercultural dialogue,” Mr Cameron said.

“Through Nomad Art we advocate the visual language as the communication of ideas, values, beliefs and culture.”

Angus and Rose plan to present small exhibitions at their Avenel studio while continuing to operate online and by appointment.

Nagambie Waterway Solar Pump Stations S&R Engineering and Construction will be undertaking works to upgrade the drainage infrastructure in the Nagambie Waterway on McGregor Avenue with works expected to be complete by mid-April.

The contractors will strive to minimise the impacts caused by these works to each resident as much as possible. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works, there may be small periods where noise and dust may be produced. S&R work hours are typically 7am – 6pm.

Pet registrations are due soon STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is reminding pet owners that registrations are due for renewal by April 10.

Residents with registered pets will soon receive a notice in the mail with their annual registration fee invoice.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was also a timely reminder for anyone who may have recently welcomed a new cat or dog to the home, or if you’ve recently moved to the area, you must register your pet with council.

“It is an easy process to register your pet with Council. All you need to do is visit our council offices at 109A Binney St, Euroa, complete a pet registration form, and pay your fee with our friendly customer service team,” Cr Binks said.

“Cats and dogs aged three months or older must be registered with council and they must be micro-chipped prior to registration.”

Registering your dog or cat is important for so many reasons.

It improves the chances of your animal being returned to you if it becomes lost and provides a whole range of other important services, including:  a council identification tag for your pet to wear;  lost and found service: a guarantee that if your pet is found wearing the council

What a blast for the town of Longwood last weekend.

The annul Beer, Wine and Cider Festival organised by the Longwood Football Netball Club was another resounding success.

The weather stayed fine, and the crowd relaxed back under the trees and enjoyed the magnificent selection of music, food and beverages on offer.

Congratulations go to the LFNC and all volunteers for their tireless efforts in getting this event up and running each year.

Alongside the festival this year, Coburg Football club held their intra-club practice match.

This was the second year the club has played this game at Longwood and was initially instigated by local resident “Narra” who is a life member of the Coburg club.

The LFNC were back on deck Sunday morning hosting a breakfast for the club.

These events also brought plenty of campers to the community centre and we hope they enjoyed what our great Longwood town had to offer.

A huge thank you to each and every person who assisted with anything over the weekend- big or small.

A community meeting facilitated by Avenel Active to seek expressions of interest from home owners and businesses was held last week.

Ms Ryan and Mr Birrell were recently in Avenel where they met with members of local action group Avenel Active to inspect the community’s new heat refuge and to be briefed on Project EDGE. As part of Project EDGE, Avenel homeowners and businesses will be invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in a distributed energy marketplace trial, the first of its kind.

The trial is being supported by the Federal Government through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

“I was impressed by the progress Avenel Active has made on this project and I look forward to working with them to help make this project a reality if I am elected to Parliament,” Mr Birrell said.

“The first stage of this project will enable individual households

Ms Ryan said the recent addition of a solar and battery powered heat refuge to the Avenel Memorial Hall would be a vital asset to the town in the event of another lengthy power outage.

“Ultimately, we want to avoid these long power outages which is causing businesses to lose thousands of dollars and putting the health of the community, par-

ticularly older residents, at risk,” Ms Ryan said.

“In the meantime, however, the community’s efforts to provide standalone power generation on the hall means people now have somewhere they can stay cool on very hot days if the power goes out.”

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said, “Avenel Active’s solar refuge project is one of the many examples of eager community groups working alongside council to achieve fantastic results”.

“The $29,000 solar project was driven by Avenel Active, the

town’s community action group, via Strathbogie Shire Council’s innovative 2021 Pitch My Project initiative,” she said.

“The project resulted in residents needing support during a heatwave with extended power outages having a solar-powered heat refuge in the heart of town.

“Solar panels and a recently commissioned solar battery hub at Avenel Memorial Hall mean vulnerable community members have an instantaneous heat refuge when the electrical grid is overloaded.

“Council welcomes any further support of this great project.”

Watch it, baby turtles are on the road

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL WATCH where you walk, as locals have spotted numerous little turtles wandering around.

In Nagambie, local Jecinta White said last week she “found at least 20 of these little guys making their way to the lake, very easy to miss and squish.”

“Watch out on the footpath and grass areas in between the beach area and park,” she said.

Turtles are indeed on the move at the moment, because this is the time of the year when they are looking for a water source

or a mating partner.

During nesting season, which starts in November, this animal is in danger, and is more prone to end up as road kill than ever in the year, so motorist should be careful and keep an eye out for them.

Short and Long-neck Turtles are already considered under threat and their populations have been severely declining for years, as their population declined from 69 per cent to 91 per cent in the past 40 years.

Local Karissa Wilson who has a Bachelor of Environmental Science Degree and

Postgraduate Certificate in Climate Change Management and worked in that field for 12 years, said that Australia shouldn’t repeat the mistake of trying to save a species only when it is declared endangered, like the country did with koalas.

“Turtles are a very ancient species that evolved in the Triassic period 250 million years ago,” she said.

“We’re so lucky to still have them, but like the koala they are heavily exposed to human pressures, so we need to be proactive about their protection.”

Milestone for John Stringer Star real estate agent g celebrates 41 yyears in the industryy

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LOVE what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life, that is Nutrien Harcourts Licensed Real Estate Agent John Stringer’s motto.

Mr Stringer’s passion for Euroa has been everlasting, and he has been working for 41 years as real estate star agent in town.

First named Dalgety as he started in 1980, the business is now called Nutrien Harcourts.

“Clients sometimes call me and ask me what the business’ name is at the moment,” Mr Stringer said.

“I have so much love and passion for this town and I am so grateful for the community’s support all throughout these four decades.”

When he first started at Dalgety, there were only two people working there, and it was about selling merchandise and stock, but soon enough real estate sale became a key element of the business.

“I’ve had a beautiful journey during that time,” Mr Stringer said.

He has also built strong relationship with every local, being a very community member himself.

Mr Stringer was in fact the Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor for a while, as well as an active member of Rotary for two decades.

He doesn’t picture himself in the retired life just yet.

“I love working, meet-

ing people, and selling real estate is about doing both,” he said.

“I’m passionate about work, and I’m not the type of person to sit down and watch television, because my life is about communicating with people.”

Mr Stringer has built such a close relationship with his clients that sometimes they call him

to remind him of good old times.

“People ring me and tell me ‘John, do you remember me, you sold my parents’ farm a while ago’ and I find this fantastic,” he said.

“The relationships I have with my clients are amazing, and our business has grown into being a global company, it’s magnificent.”

New partners in education domain COMMUNITY Learning Euroa (CLE) and Mansfield Adult Continuing Education (MACE) have partnered to deliver pre-accredited education and training programs for Euroa locals.

Funded by Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE), the first course, a ‘Learner Engagement Program’, starts in March and runs for five weeks.

MACE CEO Kylie Richards explains the partnership came about after CLE expressed interest in delivering preaccredited training in 2022, but required support from an auspice organisation.

“MACE is passionate about linking communities through learning, so we are excited for the opportunity to bring more education options to the broader community” Ms Richards said.

“By partnering with CLE, we can help expand their scope of delivery”.

The Learner Engagement Program will explore work possibilities and how to choose and pursue employment opportunities.

“You will be guided by experienced mentors and trainers, including Craig Mercuri and Rob Woodward,” Ms Richards said.

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL LAST Wednesdays, business bowls players reunited for the last time of the season for a fun game under the sun followed by a raffle.

A free sausage sizzle was offered to participants and spectators, and the main sponsor of the event, Rodwells, was thanked at the very beginning of the night.

It is impossible not to have a good time at the Euroa Bowls Club, situated on the corner of Turnbull and Templeton Streets Euroa, and is part of the picturesque Seven Creeks Park.

Many community members came along for this night of pure fun and laughter, while still competing against each other.

Children, adults and less young adults were all reunited for this game marking the end of the season.

Sandra Cocking, one of the bowls club organiser, without whom these events wouldn’t exist, said she had felt great joy during this business bowls season.

“I am looking forward to next business bowls season, I enjoyed this one so much,” she said.

Audrey McIntosh, one of the life members of the Euroa Bowles Club, said she was extremely happy about the outcome of this year’s busi-

“It’s been so successful over the years, ever since it started ten years ago, so I’m very much looking forward to next season,” Mrs McIntosh said.

She has herself been a member of the Euroa Bowls Club since 1963.

“I have been involved for 58 years, but since this year I have not been able to play because I can’t physically do it anymore but I am still very much involved and I just love to go and watch players bowling,” she said.

“It is part of my life, and I love everything related to bowls, such as our upcoming ladies tournament every Wednesday.”

Best Aussie fashion in Euroa

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL EUROA locals have a deep love for their iconic Aussie fashion items.

The town has indeed a fashionable reputation and has had it for a long time, as one of the first clothing stores in the region opened around 1919 on Binney Street and was called “Temple of Fashion”, but also nicknamed “the country’s Myer store” by community members.

Many locals still today think fashion is a way to express their identity, like Trent Howard, who forms one entity with his Akubra hat.

John Hagen agreed, saying he was wearing an Akubra most days.

“I love it, even if it shrinks,” he said.

Local Chris Palmer recalled the Morrison’s country clothing range made in Binney Street in the 70s and 80s was also another iconic fashion shop.

“We made the clothing for the actor in the Snowy River movie,” he said.

Warren Cummins, star barman at the beloved North Easter Hotel, said he couldn’t live without his Dunlop runners.

Other locals such as Cat Hogan or Vivian Lin said

they absolutely loved rocking a pair of UGGs. “There is nothing better than my UGGs on a cold morning, being able to slip my feet into my nice cosy shoes,” Ms Hogan said.

“And even better they have so much of a range now you can dress them up or down.

“You can bum around home in them or run down to your local shops.

“UGGs in winter and thongs in summer, you can’t get more Aussie than that.”

Kristy Adams said fashion had not evolved that much in her lifetime so far.

“There are a few men who still wear a bluey singlet,” she said.

“I think all the men I knew growing up wore them back in the day.

“I can still see my late uncle Stumpy sitting at bar in the Northo in his.”

For Helen Brook, there’s nothing more fashionable than flannelette.

“Flannies are worn all year round by farmers, tradies, musos and baristas,” she said.

Dr Hosam (Sam) Elshentenawy is leaving Euroa permanently to focus on his family and his practice in Cobram and assured his patients they were in the best hands with principal dentist Tom Hudson and his team at Strathbogie Dental.

“We are excited to expand our practice and move to a

full time service providing for the Euroa community,” Dr Hudson said.

“Sam has done a colossal job building his practice and looking after his patients and we look forward to caring for them in the future.

“We are also thrilled that Sally Kubeil from Euroa Dental will be joining our team so it will be great for the patients from Euroa Dental to see a familiar face.

Dr Hudson said he had experience with medically compromised patients.

FORMER Indi MP Cathy McGowan visited residents of Euroa and Violet Town to share what she has learnt about having “courageous conversations” during her two terms as the Independent Federal Member for Indi, last month.

Though officially retired, Ms McGowan continues to campaign, encouraging others to turn up speak up and step up to leadership.

With a federal election happening sometime soon, Ms McGowan is keen to ensure voters understand the role of strong representation and how to make sure the Indi voice is heard at a federal level.

Helen Haines, Indi’s current Independent member and Ms McGowan’s succes-

sor, stepped into the role in 2019, making history as the first Independent federal parliamentarian to succeed another in the same electorate since Federation in 1901.

With a doctoral degree in medical science and background in epidemiology, public health, and rural health, Dr Haines is a nurse, midwife, teacher and academic.

She has championed the campaign for a robust federal integrity commission, working with MPs from across Parliament to draft and build support for her Australian Federal Integrity Commission Bill.

She makes regular visits to those in her Indi electorate, and has established a reputation as a strong and

inexhaustible advocate for local Indi communities.

Most recently she has introduced the Cheaper Home Batteries Bill and the Faster Internet for Regional Australia Bill and she was one of those who earlier this month voted down the Religious Discrimination Bill.

The shift towards Independent representatives is gaining momentum, with many of the seats traditionally held by the two major parties now being challenged by Independent candidates who believe politics can be done better.

At least 13 independent female candidates have launched campaigns on similar platforms, focused on climate change, corruption, and women’s rights.

INTERESTING: The group of 20 locals were eager to learn from Cathy McGowan how to actively listen and understand issues that are important to others so that they can engage better with neighbours, colleagues and new arrivals in Euroa in the lead up to this year’s federal election.

Lower Goulburn River operations upgrade The interim operating rules for the lower Goulburn River are more in line with the natural variability of flows over summer and autumn, providing for longer periods of low flows, lower than we have seen in recent years, between short pulses up to 3000 ML/day.

The RIS recommended investigating the costs and benefits of moving privately owned pumps in the lower Goulburn River channel to determine whether there is an opportunity for more flexibility in the use of pulses above 3000 megalitres a day.

GMW, on behalf of DELWP, have started this work, which includes confirming existing pumps and other infrastructure within the Goulburn River channel that may be impacted under a flow up to 6000 megalitres a day.

GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) is working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to better understand how the lower Goulburn River can be protected from sustained high flows in peak irrigation times.

In March 2021, the Victorian Government released the Goulburn to Murray Trade Review Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS).

The RIS outlined proposed changes to the rules governing the trade and delivery of water from the Goulburn River to the Murray River.

These changes aim to avoid further environmental damage from sustained high flows during summer and autumn, when the flows on the lower Goulburn River would naturally be much more variable.

GMW Strategy & Services Planning general manager Daniel Irwin stressed the importance of this work in helping inform future government decisions on the Goulburn to Murray Trade Review.

“Understanding how our customers may be affected and the estimated cost of the associated works is a critical step to inform future decisions,” Mr Irwin said.

“An outcome of this work includes a better understanding of the potential costs should the relocation of infrastructure need to occur.”

Mr Irwin noted the importance of diversion customer knowledge in this process.

“We are in the process of contacting all of our diversion customers below the Goulburn Weir to confirm who may be impacted by the proposed

pulse flows and our plans to verify this on site,” he said.

GMW officers and consultants, Jacobs and RMCG, will inspect potentially impacted private pumping infrastructure between late February and mid-March 2022.

“While our team has relied on previous surveys and the knowledge of diversion inspectors, customers are encouraged to join us on our visual inspection and will be contacted prior to our team’s arrival on site,” Mr Irwin said.

“Tapping into diversion customer knowledge about how private pumping infrastructure moves in response to flows will be an important input to the study.”

St Andrew’s Centenary THE Saint Andrew’s Centenary was celebrated on Sunday, February 13 under the magnificent canopy of large Luquidamber and Elm trees which are almost as old as the church.

Sounds of hymns resonated with native birds and a beautiful breeze cooled the day.

Congregation members from three generations returned to the magnificent little town to join the celebration and catch up on old and newer friendships.

In 1884 a weatherboard church was built for the Presbyterian congregation but sadly burnt down in 1919 when Crooms Bakery and house next door caught fire.

Following the fire the Wesleyan/Methodist Church further up the street shared their building with the Presbyterians for the sum of one shilling per year.

Rev Raffs’ great granddaughter, Elly, was guest speaker at the centenary and gave a wonderful insight into the life of her great grandfather.

Although he didn’t have an easy life with childhood challenges leading him to sail to Australia alone, landing in Adelaide after many months at sea, he made a

wonderful life for himself and the family he created.

The current Saint Andrew’s Uniting Church was formed in 1977 by the merger of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches.

When the church lost the services of a Minister, local members banded together to keep the church alive.

The church now has services conducted by Pastor Bob of the Euroa Baptist Church once a month and members taking the other fortnights service.

The church has its own choir with 23 singers, which is in recess while COVID-19 restrictions are in force.

They will resume weekly practices as soon as possible.

After the service, a traditional “Bogie” morning tea was enjoyed by all as many friendships were rekindled and stories shared.

Better protections against farm trespass MEMBER for Euroa and Deputy Nationals Leader Steph Ryan says it is crucial that farmers are protected against illegal and traumatic farm trespass crime.

In Parliament last week, Ms Ryan backed the Livestock Management Amendment (Animal Activism) Bill 2021 which will introduce new penalties for farm trespass but said it doesn’t go far enough.

“Our farmers and their families need to be able to feel safe in their own homes,” Ms Ryan said.

“Labor’s changes don’t go far enough to ensure that, which is why The Nationals moved amendments to double the maximum penalty that can apply to activists who illegally invade farms, bringing Victoria into line with other states.

“These farms are far more than businesses or even livelihoods, they are people’s homes.”

The Nationals have also moved to fix problems in the legislation that would otherwise see farmer’s leased river frontage land excluded from protection by the laws.

Ms Ryan said Parliament’s farm trespass inquiry, which was spearheaded by The

Nationals MP for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath exposed serious flaws in the current trespass laws and heard of terrible failures of justice.

“In one instance an activist who illegally entered a farm in Yarragon before stealing livestock and threatening biosecurity was subsequently fined just $1 and where’s the deterrent or justice in that?”

Ms Ryan said.

“It’s only due to The Nationals and the work of Melina Bath that we now have these laws before Parliament.

“But the penalties must be significantly increased so that our farmers aren’t forced to deal with extreme activists swarming into their homes.

“There is simply no justification for why the penalties in Victoria should be significantly less than other states or why river frontage land should be excluded.

“We must strengthen trespass laws to send a message to those who would go to any lengths to destroy the livelihood of hard-working Victorian farm families.

“If the parliament can’t back the farmers who provide our food and fibre and manage much of our landscape, then it’s not doing its job.”

MP urges support for country newspapers THE government has backtracked on its plan to take revenue from regional newspapers after strenuous opposition from The Nationals and the community.

Labor’s Regulatory Legislation Amendment (Reform) Bill 2021, introduced in Parliament earlier in February, sought to remove a requirement for the state government and local councils to communicate changes and consultation opportunities via regional print publications.

Such public notices represent thousands of dollars in revenue for regional media organisations.

Member for Euroa and Deputy Leader of the Nationals Steph Ryan said she opposed the changes in the Parliament because of the impact it would have on communities and regional newspapers.

“The legislative requirement for local councils and state governments to put community notices in the paper when they’re going to make changes is a crucial part of a transparent, accountable government,” Ms Ryan said.

“But the Andrews Labor Government’s reforms sought to take that away, instead moving these notices them to a yet-to-bedetermined website, buried somewhere in the depths of the internet.

“The Premier’s admission this week that Labor got it wrong and needs to make changes before the bill goes to the Legislative Council appears to be a step in the right direction, but we’ll be waiting to see the detail.

“Sadly, we know from experience that what the Andrews Labor Government says and what it does are two different things.”

Ms Ryan said transparency on government change was an important part of open and honest government.

She said government advertising was also an important source of revenue for small country papers.

“Labor’s move abandoned our country papers by taking out another reliable, constant source of advertising and callously gutting the viability of their business,” Ms Ryan said.

Regarding aromatic herbs, it’s now the time to plant parsley, basil, thyme, chives, rocket, rosemary and sage on sunny spots, and mint in a shaded area of your garden.

Seeking youth foyer funding A CONSORTIUM will drive development of an $11.4 million Education First Youth (EFY) Foyer to be built adjacent to the Wangaratta GOTAFE campus on Docker Street.

The partnership will seek funding to build and operate the foyer that aims to provide accommodation for young people while they study.

The consortium consisting of GOTAFE, NESAY Inc, Uniting Housing (Victoria) Limited and Brotherhood of St Laurence will collaborate under a formal joint working

arrangement.

All members of the consortium have a long history of providing support to young people, housing services, service development, research knowledge and mainstream educational expertise.

The EFY Foyer initiative will include the project management and construction of a three-level building combining 40 individual studio apartments with community living spaces.

It will provide young people (16 -24 years) experienc-

ing or at risk of homelessness accommodation while undertaking education, training and employment opportunities to expand on their capabilities and build life skills.

The project is shovel ready pending capital funding, which is being sought through Homes Victoria, for Youth Housing Initiatives.

Life with pets inside is worth it

By REALESTATEVIEW.COM.AU ANYONE who owns a pet can vouch for their pet’s ability to make them laugh or comfort them in times of stress.

A recent study conducted by the University of South Australia revealed that 90 per cent of pet owners surveyed said that touching their pets both comforted and relaxed them and the pets seemed to need it as well.

Pets provide us with comfort, companionship and a sense of self-worth.

In a survey by Animal Medicines Australia it was revealed there is an estimated 29 million pets in Australia, outnumbering humans which is an estimated 25 million.

The most popular pet is a dog, with 40 per cent of households owning at least one, followed by cats at 27 per cent.

However, despite this love and dedication they show us they aren’t able to offer the same level of dedication to the

housework.

Cat and dog hair, general odour and bad breath, kitty litter, dropped food and water plus walking dirt, mud or leaves inside are just some of the messes that come along with the fun of owning a pet.

Luckily there are plenty of easy ways to combat these issues.

Hair Prevention is better than cure. Put a blanket or sheet over furniture if your pet sits on the lounge or buy them their own bed and teach them to sit on it. This might be hard for some, especially if your pet is already accustomed to sitting next to you on the lounge.

When hair does end up on furniture the best way to combat it is lint roller, rubber brush and vacuum. Vacuuming or sweeping regularly around the house will prevent any hair gathering in corners. If you can afford one a robot vacuum is perfect for this job.

Odour

Again stop it before it starts.

Wash your pet regularly when needed or use pet wipes when they just have some spots of dirt. A wet cloth works fine.

Don’t wash your pet too often as overwashing can cause irritation and make sure you’re using a gentle shampoo. While any store-bought air fresheners will work fine a cheap and

effective alternative is white vinegar and water. Spray this on your pet’s bed and anywhere an odour might be lurking. The vinegar will kill the bacteria causing the smell and the smell of the vinegar will dissipate after a few minutes.

Use less water for a more effective spray.

Kitty litter

Ensure you are using a good quality kitty litter and empty it regularly. There are also kitty litter trays you can get with covers to help prevent the smell spreading and also prevent your cat from flicking litter across the room.

Food and water Feeding your pet outside will prevent any food mess in-

side but if this isn’t an option using a placemat for your pet is the next best option. There are plenty of different sizes on the market, many offering a rubber surface so bowls will grip and not tip over so easily.

Placing the water bowl on a similar mat will at least prevent water from spilling on the floor.

Muddy paws You can actually train your dog to wipe their paws before they come inside. If you’re not this savvy with training a quick wipe with a towel will suffice.

Just get your dog used to waiting before they run straight inside.

From the Animal Medicines Australia survey 90 per cent of pet owners said pets had a very positive impact on their lives while only three per cent said pets impacted them negatively.

The main perceived downside of pet ownership is organising care while away from home.

Clean up this Sunday

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL EUROA Community Action Group is organising Clean Up Australia Day in Euroa.

“We are so pumped to be hosting Clean Up Australia Day 2022,” they shared on their social media.

“Clear your schedules, because on Sunday, March 6 from 9.30am-noon, we are going to clean up Euroa.”

All are invited to meet at 9.30am in Brock Street behind the pool in the future community garden and then assign groups to tackle areas.

There are a few places shortlisted to be cleaned on that day, including the Arboretum, around the Euroa Secondary College, along

the creek area and around the overpass.

This will be followed by a barbecue hosted by Rotary at noon at Brock Street.

“We really want to have some fun as we clean, so feel free to bring your friends, some music, maybe even a footy for a kick in a break,” ECAG shared on Facebook.

“It should be a great day out.”

A grade cricketers looking for finals next year A GRADE played Numurkah at the Friendlies Oval in the last home and away match for this season.

Euroa won the toss and elected to bat.

Young guns Cohen Paul and Ryan Hill opened the batting.

They both put in a solid performance and made the Numurkah team work hard.

After Cohen was caught out Vaughan Kirk joined Ryan Hill at the crease.

A good partnership ensured.

Unfortunately the batters who followed on from then failed to upset Numurkah too much.

Ryan Hill top scored with 29.

Another win for Dick Farmer A GROUP of 16 ladies and 19 men entered the Wednesday Stableford Competition.

In the men, Dick Farmer collected another win on 38 points in a four way countback from Jim Garrard, Paddy McCarthy and Phil McFeteridge.

Jeff Moran one further back on 37.

Mark Coradin eagled the 447 metre par five 13th.

Kae Lummas won division one in the ladies with 35 points and Marion McMartin took out division two.

Ball winners were Robyn Lied on 35, Rachel Ritchie, May Hamilton on 34 and Pam Sprunt, Freda Edwards collected Nearest the Pins on 8 + 12 while Judy McLean was closest on 18.

20 players made up the field for the last round of the Keith Seeber Twilight Event.

Bruce Denery amassed 21 points to win the day, three shots clear of McMartin, Ritchie, Keeley, Wishart and Dot Rule in a five way tie on 18 points for second.

Glen McMartin’s 17 points was enough for him to take out the Keith Seeber Trophy with rounds of 19, 19, 18 and 17 only three shots clear of the consistent and improving Mick Keeley.

On Saturday a total of 59 players entered the two events.

The men’s was won by Neil Baxter visiting from Keysborough Golf Club, with +7 from Laurie McMartin on +6.

Mick Anderson took out division two with +5. Laurie McMartin was on target claiming Nearest the Pins on 5, 8 and 15.

Ball winners were Glen McMartin + 3, M Walker and McCarthy, M Steers and D Bubeck all with +1.

The Saturday competition also included the second round of the Lewis Family Knockout Event which was held over from 2021 due to Covid lockdowns.

Charlie Walker was successful over Richard Eddy on a countback and will play Cam Roper who defeated Frank O’Connor in the second semi-final.

Both Bill Wright and Richard Johnson went through to the first semifinal, which Bill won comfortably on the 15th.

Kae Lummas had her second win for the week on Sunday with 37 points and Ros Doxey won Division 2 with 38 points.

Ball winners were Freda Edwards, Michelle Grady, Erica Mercer and Marion McMartin.

Freda Edwards, Drive and Pitch winner was in the hole on the 5th.

Gail Allen picked up a Nearest the Pin and a Drive and Pitch.

Next Friday sees the Top 10 Shootout in the Kinross Farms event, when the top 10

qualifiers will tee off together with one player being eliminated on each hole until the last two standing take on the 128 metre par three 18th.

The field in order of qualifying is Glen McMartin, Mick Keeley, Dot Rule, Richard Eddy, Brian Rule, Dale McIntosh, Marion McMartin, Michelle Thompson, Moo Loo and Gary Ritchie.

A lively player auction was conducted in the clubhouse on Saturday with the punters paying the top dollars for the last qualified Ritchie, Glen McMartin, who is a Twilight specialist attracted vigorous bidding, but the smart money found the way to the reliable and solid Richard Eddy.

Other keen bids were made for some of the higher handicap players.

The shoot off begins at 3.30pm Friday.

The drinks kart will follow the field along with a sizeable gallery.

With a big cash prize for the winner as well as a big pool in the player auction, there will be plenty to play for.

Next Saturday is opening day for the 2022 season with a three person Ambrose.

Assemble at 7.00am or 11.00am for shotgun starts after the official season opening.

A fun event and a great way to knock the dust off the clubs if you haven’t played for a while. Organise a team or arrive as a single, everyone will be placed in a team.

The following weekend is the three day autumn tournament.

Scratch and handicap Saturday, Four Ball Sunday and mixed Pinehurst on Monday.

The course is playing beautifully and after the interruptions of the past two years, it’s time to get out and enjoy these events.

The club announced the appointment of Dav Mackrell into the Greenkeepers position.

Dav picks up the reins next week.

A special thanks to the huge efforts of Phil Steers as Course Director keeping the course in great shape while there was no Greenkeeper, helped by a small but tireless group on the mower.

Also a special shout out to Neil Healey, who with Josh Bell’s assistance finally completed the installation of the new Clubhouse roof.

A great effort from securing the grant funding to screwing down the last sheet.

In other Club news, Mick Corradin and Gary Ritchie played to Hidden Valley two man Ambrose on Friday.

By the end of it, Corradin could have felt like a Lindsay Park Racehorse, apparently he had to carry his little jockey mate through all 18 holes.

B grade cricketers play last match EUROA travelled to Numurkah for the last match of the home and ways.

Euroa lost toss and Numurkah elected to bat.

Lachie Cooke and Fletcher Paul opened the bowling.

They kept it tight for the first 10 overs.

Lucas Paul took first 2 wickets followed by Rodney Jones.

Josh Robertson tried out the other end of the wicket.

He is usually at the batter’s end but tried out roll-

ing his arm ending up with a wicket.

Our best bowler was Rodney Jones, who ended up with a magnificent 5/30.

Lucas Paul 2/28 and Josh Robertson 1/9.

Best batsman for Numurkah were A Harding with 35 and K Jackson 22.

They were all out for 134.

A special mention to Owen Robertson who came out of semi-retirement and was wicket keeper for the whole 42 overs.

He even managed a catch

and a stumping.

A great performance.

Euroa went into bat chasing an attainable 134.

Rodney Jones and Lachie Hill opened the batting.

Lachie didn’t last long and Rodney was joined by Josh Robertson.

Rodney managed 12 runs.

Kieran Robertson and Fletcher Paul batted well but Euroa was losing constant wickets and couldn’t get any partnership to gel.

Nobody managed to get

on top of the Numurkah bowlers and the batting slowly crumbled.

Euroa ended up with a score of 79 off 34 overs.

Fletcher Paul was top scorer with 17 runs and Kieran Robertson 15.

Top bowlers for Numurkah were R Lacuin 4/18, A Harding 2/15, M Smyth 2/26 and N Dowell 1/12. B grade would like to thank the players and supporters for a great year and look forward to next season.

C Grade cricketers lose out in final game of the season

By JACK WILSON Euroa 7-88 (R Baig 18, W Jackson 15*) def by Tatura 5-91 (G Kirk 2-18, J Wilson 1-16) THE Euroa C grade side hosted Tatura at Memorial Oval in the final round of the regular season in a must win game to play finals.

Captain Dion Grant won the toss and elected to bat.

Grant and John Brodie opened the batting and got off to a shaky start with Brodie being bowled by a fluky delivery followed by Grant shortly after to leave the team at 2-13 after 10 overs.

Euroa managed to hobble to drinks with the score at 4-32.

Following drinks, Euroa went on the attack for runs with Rahis Baig, Walter Jackson and Robbie Smith getting Euroa to a total of 7-88 after 40 overs.

With only 89 to defend, Euroa’s bowlers went on the hunt for quick wickets and got immediate success with Walter Jackson trapping Tatura’s opener LBW leaving the opposition at 1-3.

Tatura then started to get the runs flowing until Greyson Kirk got a wicket by taking a catch off his own bowling and he repeated it a couple of overs later.

After drinks, Henry Jackson came back into the attack and clean bowled the batter.

Jack Wilson also snared a wicket towards the end of the game.

Euroa lost the game by five wickets.

C grade would like to thank everyone that helped this season with scoring by whether the book or iPad, as well as umpiring during matches.

Overall, a pleasing result for a young team considering many disruptions faced by cricket throughout Victoria.

A special thanks must also go to our juniors Walter Jackson, Kusuma Wolfenden, Nathan Butler, Mitch Walter, Blake Hepworth, Cale Robertson, Archie Wilson, Ollie Wilson and Wil Smyth who played Senior cricket for C grade after playing the earlier matches in the Junior competition.

2022 Ash Wilson Interleague venue announced THE GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League (GVL) and the SS&A Ovens and Murray Football and Netball League (O&M) are scheduled to play Interleague matches on Saturday 28 May 2022.

After reviewing submissions from GOTAFE GVL Clubs to host the matches, the board of the GOTAFE GVL are pleased to announce that these games will be played at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.

GOTAFE GVL Board Chairman David Roff said, “the board was pleased to receive several submissions from GOTAFE GVL Clubs to host these matches”.

“It was a difficult decision but the submission from Mooroopna FNC was selected after lengthy discussions”, he said.

Interleague matches to be played are Under 18 football along with open and 17 & under netball.

The senior football teams will once again play for the coveted Ash-Wilson Trophy,

currently held by the SS&A O&M. The leagues have competed against each other since 2001 with the trophy being named after former Shepparton and Albury legend Stephen Ash and Wangaratta Rovers champion Mick Wilson.

GOTAFE GVL Operations Manager Josephine Spencer is excited about the planned Interleague clashes.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to renew the rivalry between our two great leagues, both in netball and football”.

O&M board Chairman David Sinclair said, “We look forward to resuming the rivalry between two very proud country football and netball leagues. We also look forward to crowds getting back to watch the best country football and netball players.”

THE Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association (GVFUA) has been serving local Australian Rules Football around the Goulburn Valley since 1958.

GVFUA are one of the largest umpiring groups in Australia, with many female umpires in a multicultural diverse environment where all members are made to feel welcome.

The GVFUA has a strong emphasis on families and social interactivity, which in turn, engenders great camaraderie between members of all ages and their families.

GVFUA are affiliated with AFL Goulburn Murray, supplying field, boundary and goal umpires to the Goulburn Valley League, Murray Football League, Kyabram District League, Shepparton Junior Football League & the Northern Country Women’s League.

GVFUA officiate games at football venues in an area stretching from Deniliquin in the north, Mansfield in the east, Rochester in the west and Seymour in the south and everywhere in between. Despite this and largely due to COVID-19, member numbers have dropped so as part of the 2022 recruiting drive, we are conducting a “come & try” night for anyone who has any interest in umpiring football.

Participants will get to wave flags, throw a

boundary throw in and practice the umpire bounce prior to an information session.

The come and try sessions will be held at the GVFUA Club Rooms, located at Kialla Recreation Reserve, as well as Kyabram Recreation Reserve.

GVFUA President Simon Walsh said “the come and try night is a great way for any potential umpires to experience different aspects of field, boundary and goal umpiring.

Whatever your reason for umpiring may be, including fitness, bit of extra cash or to keep involved in the game, our team of coaches and support staff will assist you on your way to umpiring to the best of your ability.”

There is no cost to come & try and it is sure to be a great experience for anyone who wants to learn more about the rules of Australian Rules football.

LAST Saturday was the last of the home and away of the Saturday pennant matches for the 2021/22 season and the Euroa division four playing at home successfully won on all four rinks against the Shepparton Park side, 124/66.

Division one travelled to Tallygaroopna and lost 73/105 and division six north lost to the Kyabram bowlers 65/80 at Euroa.

The club will now look to the next season to take part in the pennant play on the Saturday but we are pleased that the three midweek sides are in the finals.

Thanks to all the bowlers who have taken part each Saturday, many of who have had to fill in at the last minute considering 44 bowlers were needed each Saturday along with 32 members who played midweek, many of whom played each day.

Junior cricketers win semi final contest

Euroa 2-85 def Karramomus 4-82 BRIGHT and early, 9am Sunday morning at the Friendlies saw Karramomus win the toss and choose to bat first.

Ollie Swain and Archie Wilson opened the bowling with Archie taking the first wicket 1-3.

Some pretty nice bowling followed from Jack Walters, Ollie Wilson, Haimi Wolfenden and then Ben Creevey who took the second wicket with a catch from Ethan Saxon.

Ethan was next to bowl, followed

by Leo Murphy who bowled and caught the third wicket with the score now 3-37.

Angus Burton bowled the fourth 4-49.

Laila Creevey and Lachlan Dowell bowled a couple of overs before Ollie, Archie and Jack had another crack, seeing out the 25 overs with Karramomus setting a target of 82 runs.

After a quick but much needed drinks break, play resumed at 10:35am with Euroa at bat.

Despite some early semi-final nerves from the Euroa team, they were soon set at ease with the fantastic efforts of opening batsmen Archie Wilson and Ollie Swain, both hitting fours in the first two overs before Ollie was run out in the third after making seven runs, score 1-22.

Captain Ethan Saxon was up next and batted admirably.

Both Archie and Ethan were retired after facing their 20 balls making 31 and 23 runs respectively, including 4 x 4’s each plus a six from Archie.

Cale Robertson and Will Davey were in next with Cale making some smart plays while unfortunately Will went out for a duck on an LBW. Score was two for 73 halfway through the eighth at 11.15am.

Jack Walters was our sixth and last batsman for the morning as his score of nine runs (including two fours) took them over the target, winning their semi-final 2-85 after nine overs by 11.20am. Congratulations Euroa Under 14s Next week the Euroa Under 14s will be playing it out for the grand final title at the Friendlies from 10am.

GOLF NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB MEN A THRILLING finish with a four way tie at the top at the Nagambie par event on Sunday, the course had a welcome freshening up with the stormy weather late in the week providing enough rain to see some benefit to the ground conditions.

Slammin’ San Villinger came out on top of the monster count back to claim victory with +1, Villinger continued to be a consistent performer with a big win firmly set in his sights.

By ROB BROWNLEE TWELVE players took cards on Tuesday Feburary 22, the day was perfect for golf after all the working been done on the previous Sunday in readiness for the Frost Fourball Tournament.

The course looked magnificent.

Peter Smith took full advantage to score 41 points; lineballs were won by David Kennett and Rob Brownlee both with 37 points.

Nearest the pin on the eighth went to Grant Pearce, and the ball on the seventh was won by David Kennett.

On Saturday February 26 again conditions were perfect for golf with a big field playing stableford, Mick Dixey won with 41 points, lineballs were also won by Wally Dunn with 39 points, Eleanor Barns also 39 points and Phil Rafferty 38 points.

Under 16 cricketers bid for grand final success Results: Euroa 4/122 (C Paul 30* retired, W Smyth 25* retired, A Murray 17) defeated Numurkah 70 all out (W Jackson 2/1, C Paul 2/6, N Butler 2/11) EUROA travelled to Kialla for a much anticipated semi-final clash with Numurkah under lights on Friday evening.

Winning the toss, Euroa didn’t hesitate to have a bat on a batting friendly pitch.

As has been the case all year, the openers got the team off to a solid start with Mitch Walters (12* retired) the aggressor and Walter Jackson (3* retired) the steady hand.

After the openers saw off the new ball, the middle order put on a fireworks display.

Coen Paul (30* retired) and Angus Murray (17) took the game away from Numurkah with some big hitting and clever running between wickets, clearing the boundary on multiple occasions.

Their partnership took the score from 27 after 8 overs to 82 after 13 overs and set Euroa up for a big score.

This pairing was complimented by some intelligent lower order batting from Wil Smyth (25* retired) and Darby Wilson (11).

They kept the pressure on the opposition fielders, keeping the good balls out with Wil continually finding the boundary with some

well executed power hitting.

As a result the boys walked off the ground after their 20 overs with the score on 4/122, the highest score they have posted for the season.

As the lights took effect and the Numurkah openers strode to the pitch, Euroa were switched on for a good evening in the field.

There was plenty of talk and encouragement from all players and they didn’t let up with the pressure for the entire innings.

The bowlers started well and tight fielding resulted in three run outs. With wickets falling regularly, Euroa didn’t give Numurkah a chance to get ahead of the required run rate.

Every bowler did the job required and impacted the match, with Walter Jackson (2/1), Coen Paul (2/6) and Nathan Butler (2/11) getting the best results.

This was a match where the boys executed everything they implemented extremely well and were able to restrict Numurkah to 70 all out.

Next week is the Grand Final.

This will take place against Notre Dame/St Brendan’s at Mooroopna on Friday evening.

The boys have worked hard all year, playing as a committed and cohesive team and fully deserve their place in the grand final.

Semi-finals make for a big weekend of tennis

By MARK BORTHWICK THE season all came down to the final four teams playing off for a spot in the grand final.

St Pauls of Euroa has had a great season and were widely tipped to beat Terip at Euroa on the grass, but Terips ladies had other ideas with Cindy Hayes and Frances Lawrence winning the first set 8-2 over Faye Mollison and Ella Hill.

The Scott Brothers Watson and Meehan fought back with a battled set 8-5 against Robert and Matthew Lawrence.

Cindy then combined with Sally Kubeil for an 8-5 over Faye Mollison and Lily Meehan.

Scott Meehan and Jake Hill got the St Pauls team firing with an 8-3 but it was left to Jake and his up-andcoming daughter Ella to win the only other set for St Pauls, 8-1.

Terip blasted the last two mixed sets to win by 14 and a shot at the title.

Euroa’s other team Gooram went up the mountain to Strathbogie.

With a couple of marquees and a picnic like atmosphere it seemed Strath-

bogie were in no mood for a picnic with Mayra Walsh and Genevieve Johnson winning 8-4 whilst Jason Everleigh and Mark Borthwick rolled Josh Higgins and Senura Kodikara 8-0.

The Strathbogie men dominated the afternoon with straight 8-0 wins while the Gooram Ladies of Chris Ellis, Julie Harrington, and Kim Flack (best on the day) won the next two ladies sets.

When Jason and Mayra came off the court with another 8-0 the dye was cast and although Kim and Senura had a great win 8-4 over Craig Mercuri and

Meg Ford, it was all over, and Strathbogie won by 29 games to be in their second grand final in a row.

Terip inflicted Strathbogie’s only loss for the year, so they should be confident going into Saturday’s match to be played at Euroa.

On the Labour Day weekend, the annual Tennis Tournament at Euroa is shaping up to be a big one.

THE weather was extra kind to all the bowlers who have participated in the last few weeks of the series, sponsored

by Rodwells and organised by the club.

Many of the participants had never taken part previously and were encouraged by those who had and were spurred on by the encouragement of members of the Euroa Bowls Club who either played in a team or helped with the organisation.

This year Bill Sargood was the coordinator with assistance from Shane Drysdale and David Cerini.

Thanks to Lindsay and Sandra Cocking and Libby Byrne for the barbecue each night with the help also of Max Griffiths and Libby also for selling raffle tickets.

A spider, which is where a jack is placed in the centre of the green and a draw to kitty on the green with a coin under and all must take turns trying to bowl as close as possible, was held and winners were Jayden Booth and Jann Watters.

This was something bowlers who have never played had never experienced before.

Prizes were vouchers to Stasia’s Place Euroa.

Thanks to Balmattum Butchers who donated meat trays and on the final night a dressed lamb, Burton stores for fruit and vegetable boxes and the club who provided other prizes.

Sponsors for these nights are greatly appreciated by the club and with Rodwells the main sponsor over the series a big thank you.

At the end of the night most players were able to stay and enjoy drinks and nibbles while watching for the announcement of the winners.

The encouragement award was won by the Butter Factory team, Richard Hayes, Hugh Sammon and Ed Harding.

Runners up were Moore Builders John and Brenton Moore, Sim Scarlett, winners were the Scobie Street team of Sam Barkley, James Cerini, Noel Moon.

Rodwells representative Scott Meehan presented the trophies to the winners, saying it was great to be able to sponsor this night and also take part.

He thanked those who again came along to play and congratulated the winners, runners up and encouragement winners.

He also thanked the club members who again organised another series of the Business House bowls and all the members who each night were there to encourage and help bowlers and he hoped to take part next year.

Champion netball player comes to Violet Town Football Netball Club ONE of Australia’s greatest netball names is coming to Violet Town Football Netball Club on Sunday, March 6 for a junior coaching clinic and Q and A. Madi Browne is one of Australia’s most distinguished netballers and is best known for her dominance through the mid court.

As a young athlete, Madi was recognised in 2006 as best new talent as well as rookie of the year, going on to succeed as the 21/U Australian player of the year in 2008 and representing Australia in 2009 at the 21/U world championships, helping Australia to win the title.

Brown then went on to play nationally at the Melbourne Vixens, before moving on to the West Coast Fever.

With multiple MVP awards spanning from 2009-2015, and returning from injury in 2016 to take out her second ANZ

Championship MVP award, Browne has a Commonwealth Games gold medal and is a qualified physical education teacher.

Ages 9-17 are invited to the Violet Town Football Netball Club to take part in a coaching clinic run by Madi Browne from 10.30am to 12.00pm, on Sunday March 6, followed by a barbecue lunch supplied by the club, a talk from Madi and a Q and A session.
