Push continues for female change rooms upgrade A GROUP of determined locals are pushing for significant upgrades to the female change rooms at Euroa’s Memorial Oval.

Several women of all ages, along with partners and supporters, gathered at the Euroa netball courts next to the Memorial Oval to discuss the need for improving the facilities.

Members from Strathbogie Shire Council including Kristy Hourigan were in attendance too.

While there, sports sessions were arranged for the girls in attendance, highlighting the enormous participation levels of girls sport in Euroa.

Melinda Watson is one of the individuals leading the charge for the upgrades and spoke with the Gazette about why it

is so important.

Ms Watson has been a regular fixture of Euroa sports, being a driving force behind local netball, basketball and most recently a women’s football team.

Ms Watson spoke about the poor standard of the current facilities and what was required in the future.

“Our current facilities are not up to scratch for any athlete, let alone our female participants,” she said.

“They are dated,

cramped and not sufficient for the needs of modern sport.

“We need new and appropriate facilities for all participants who use the Memorial Oval.

“Our current netball and football players have been ‘putting up’ with our poor amenities for a long period of time.

“We want to work hard to get the facilities we deserve, for the future of the club.”

Ms Watson’s involvement

with sports in town has given her a much-needed insight into the growing participation of women’s and girls’ sport.

After seeing the improvement in participation levels and the standard of play, it was clear that the facilities had to improve too.

“We have always had a great number of participants playing traditional female sports like netball,” she said.

Inquiry to shine light on October floods across regional Victoria

FLOOD INQUIRY: The Nationals have supported a motion that would result in a state-wide inquiry into Victoria’s preparedness and response to flooding events.

COMMUNITIES across regional Victoria will be able to have their voices heard through a state-wide inquiry into Victoria’s preparedness and response to flooding events.

The Nationals supported a motion in the Legislative Council requiring the Environment and Planning Committee to report on the preparedness and response to the October 2022 Victorian floods.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said the flood inquiry will have a broad remit.

“We’ve been able to establish this crucial inquiry which will look into causes and contributions to the floods and early warning systems,” Ms Cleeland said.

“While towns like Murchison were able to plan for the rising Goulburn, in Seymour people were left

“So many of our towns including Murchison, Seymour and Heathcote already have incredibly unaffordable flood insurance premiums.

“The October floods will only bump up these premiums further - the only way to bring these down is to look at what can be done to mitigate flooding and protect our towns.”

As the inquiry is established more information will become publicly available.

“I’ll be communicating information as to how to contribute to this inquiry as it becomes available,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Local businesses need to be able to look to the future with confidence.

“This inquiry is essential - ensuring we learn from past mistakes and put plans in place for the future.”

Several projects within Strathbogie Shire sent to federal treasurer

THE most recent quarterly figures released by the Victorian Agency for Health Data has highlighted the dire state of mental health care in regional Victoria, revealing that providers simply do not have the capacity to treat more people.

The data, which covers OctoberDecember 2022, shows that mental health inpatient beds across regional Victoria are full while metropolitan providers have the capacity for far more patients.

Mental health inpatient beds are occupied by a patient 96 per cent of the time in the Goulburn region, while the North East and Border providers are in an even more alarming situation with the data showing that over 101 per cent of beds are occupied.

Meanwhile, the state-wide average occupancy sits below 80 per cent.

with little warning time to prepare and evacuate.

“It’s evident there were serious issues with warning systems and projections.

“It’s critically important we also gain a better understanding of decisions around water catchment management and improve both decision making and communication processes.”

The inquiry will also investigate the ‘location, funding, maintenance and effectiveness of engineered structures, such as flood walls, rural levees and culverts, as a flood mitigation strategy.’

“With the evidence pointing towards flooding like this becoming more likely and variable, flood mitigation infrastructure is essential,” Ms Cleeland said.

By GUS RIDDER THE Federal Government must invest in roads, housing and community infrastructure across Indi in the next budget, says Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines.

Dr Haines has released the Indi Budget Submission ahead of the 2022-23 Budget, making the case for investment in the region to unlock economic opportunities.

Working with local councils to identify funding priorities, Dr Haines has ensured the needs of Indi are considered by the government as it prepares the budget.

“The Indi Budget Submission puts our priorities front and centre and highlights urgent projects across the region, projects that will deliver

value to taxpayer and projects that will ensure North East Victoria thrives,” Dr Haines said.

“Increased funding for roads is always a priority, but after the flooding last year and extreme weather across the region, the need is more urgent than ever.

“Before the floods, Strathbogie Shire council estimated it needed to spend $15 million to re-sheet 227.678km of roads after continued wet weather.

“Following last year’s floods, they expect the cost to be closer to $50 million.

“Councils across Indi are seeking funding assistance to ensure safety on our country roads.”

Other projects discussed for the Strathbogie Shire include renewable energy up-

grades, further funding for Greening Euroa, fibre internet upgrades, a nature based playground, streetscape renewal programs, and a Sale Yard Biosecurity Truck Wash.

Dr Haines met with mayors from across Indi in Wangaratta on Friday morning to discuss the priorities from across Indi, including housing issues and funding for roads and telecommunications.

“It was a pleasure to hold a roundtable meeting with representatives from the nine LGAs that make up the electorate of Indi,” Dr Haines said.

“It is an opportunity to discuss our common interest, shared experiences and also learn from each other.

“It means we ensure the way we work with the Government is most effective and we have the most impact.”

Nationals MPs discuss Inland Rail with the ARTC

By GUS RIDDER THE Nationals Member for Northern Victoria, Gaelle Broad, and Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, have hosted the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) at parliament to discuss upcoming Inland Rail works across the region.

With the Tottenham to Albury phase of the 1700km project underway, works across Victoria will continue over the next few years, with associated road infrastructure upgrades set to ramp up in 2025 to cater for double storey freight trains utilising the line.

The Inland Rail project continues to generate significant attention in the town of Euroa, with community consultation recently putting forward new information and visualisations about an underpass option at the Anderson Street Bridge.

This update has been received positively by much of the community, who over the past years have campaigned strongly for this option rather than the overpass that was initially suggested by the ARTC. Ms Broad said it was encouraging to hear the ARTC’s plans to provide communities along the rail line the chance to have their say.

“The ARTC has a massive job delivering Inland Rail, with Victoria a major part of this project,” Ms Broad said.

“It’s clear they are eager to place local voices at the centre of their decision making, particularly where bridges, roads

“When delivered in full, Inland Rail will be a huge boost for regional economies, increasing productivity and connecting Eastern Australia.

“I look forward to working closely with the ARTC to support the delivery of this project while ensuring the wishes of our regional communities are heard and respected.”

Lower House MP Annabelle Cleeland said the next phase of works will impact towns across central and northern Victoria.

“Tranche 1 sites include some works across the North-East of Victoria including at Glenrowan, Wangaratta and the Murray

Valley Highway at Barnawartha North,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The Wangaratta upgrades are particularly complex with a vehicle underpass, bridge replacement, track works, a pedestrian underpass and signal work all forming part of the upgrades.

“The Wangaratta upgrades are hopefully occurring very shortly, towards the middle of the year.”

Ms Cleeland outlined the timeline for Inland Rail works in the Euroa electorate.

“ARTC is engaging with the communities in Benalla and Euroa right now, with alterations needing to be made to the current infrastructure,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Once these works are complete, we will see phase 2 kick into gear with towns like Seymour and Broadford impacted.

“This will involve the heightening of multiple bridges in these communities which will cause some obstruction to traffic.

“This is expected to occur in 2025, with ARTC putting in plenty of work now to get these designs right to minimise disruption and create the best outcome for our communities.

“ARTC is always open to feedback, and I encourage people right across our region to have their say as these works progress.”

By GUS RIDDER AS the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) continues community consultation with the Euroa community, local group EuroaConnect says it’s time to focus attention on the detailed design of the rail underpass and associated precinct development.

Established in 2020 after the ARTC managed consultation process had broken down, EuroaConnect has worked to collect and articulate community views in relation to the rail crossing.

In addition, the group, which includes locals with substantial expertise in areas such as architectural design, construction engineering, heritage, cultural and environmental considerations, has consulted widely with infrastructure design and construction specialists with national and international experience to ensure that the underpass solution was viable and achievable.

All of those involved with EuroaConnect have now indicated their commitment to continue with their community engagement and advocacy work to ensure that Euroa develops a rail precinct that will provide a social and environmental focal point for the town for decades to come.

VOCAL LOCALS: EuroaConnect, a local group heavily involved with articulating the community’s opinions on the ARTC Inland Rail Project, has weighed in on the recent community consultation period.

When reflecting on recent forums held by ARTC to confirm community support for the proposed solution and associated risk management, EuroaConnect Chair John Simpson AM spoke about the efforts of the Euroa community.

“Firstly we want to congratulate and thank the community for their tireless pursuit of an underpass as the only solution that will enhance the Euroa township, better connect our community across the rail corridor and is in keeping with heritage and environmental values in our small town,” he said.

“This week ARTC has provided comprehensive technical information confirming a road under rail solution is viable and presents minimal and manage-

able risks to our community.

“The task ahead now is to ensure that the final design and attributes included in the overall rail precinct represent best practice in design and meet the expectations of this community.

“We can only achieve this with direct community involvement in the process.

“Euroa Connect understands that Strathbogie Council is convening a stakeholder group to oversee the next phase of the planning process.

“We believe that the community’s perspective must be directly represented in this forum. “EuroaConnect stands ready to support our town through the design and construction process and we call on Council and the other stake-

holders to take up this offer.”

ARTC head of design and engineering Spencer Leach said when he met recently with EuroaConnect that “When we leave the Euroa township we want to leave a positive legacy.”

EuroaConnect say they share this belief and are committed to working with the community to ensure a legacy that has enduring value for our town.

Decisions regarding the underpass option are still yet to be finalised, with the ARTC’s recommendation set to occur following the completion of the current engagement process and subsequent assessment process with the Department of Transport and Planning, who are the asset and infrastructure owner.

FEEDBACK HEARD: Council staff attended the Avenel Market to gather feedback on the play space at Jubilee Park.

Community chooses new equipment for Jubilee Park A NEW play space in Avenel’s Jubilee Park will feature six elements selected by the community following an extensive engagement process.

The play structure will make up part of the new equipment which also includes swings, including an all-abilities swing, net swing, flying fox and two new play structures made up of many different elements.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was fantastic to hear from so many members of the Avenel community, particularly children, during the voting process.

“We attended the Avenel Market in February where we had an incredible response to our survey,” Cr Binks said.

“Many of the people who participated in the survey

were a combination of parents and children who were actually playing in the play space on the day, so it was great to tap into these key users.”

Cr Binks said council also visited the Avenel Kindergarten and Avenel Primary School to conduct engagement sessions with students.

“The kindergarten children showed us their favourite elements by placing stickers on a sheet of paper displaying the options for each element,” she said.

“While the primary school students made the most of the opportunity to conduct a technology lesson with students scanning a QR code to take them to council’s online survey at Share Strathbogie.”

Cr Binks said the online survey received almost 300 responses and the results showed clear winners for each element.

“Our community selected the Stepper Bridge, Fixed Hanging Rings, Scaling Wall, Wave Bridge, 1500 Fibreglass Slide and the Inclined Net Bridge which will be included into the final design,” she said.

These items are: Galvanised Steel Play Unit, Combination Unit/Play Structure, Freestanding Slide, four Spring Rocker Horses and both sets of double swings.

The play space is also being enhanced thanks to the Avenel Jubilee Park committee and Avenel Active Inc. who were successful in securing a $50,000 government grant for shade sails to be installed over area.

BlazeAid looks for volunteers

BLAZEAID, a volunteerbased organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods, is seeking more people to assist them.

Working alongside the rural families, BlazeAid volunteers help to rebuild fences and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed.

Volunteers also help to lift the spirits of people who are often facing their second or third flood event after years of drought, or devastating losses through bushfires. BlazeAid volunteers work in a disasteraffected area for many months, not only helping individuals and families, but also helping rebuild the local communities.

Ian and Karen, the coordinators of Seymour Blaze Aid, have spoken about the need for more volunteers to provide assistance after the recent floods.

“The greatest need we have at the moment is recruiting enough volunteers to match the number of requests for assistance that we have received,” they said.

“We currently have just over 30 properties on our register seeking assistance, and currently only have five

“Some properties require a couple of days work, so we’re well behind on the goal of helping as many people in a short amount of time, rather than spending the next three months help-

ing farmers with one team at a time.

“We have capacity to send out five teams on any given day if we have the volunteers registered at camp, which would make a big impact if we could recruit enough volunteers to help out for a day or two, a week or more.”

They spoke about the work involved and how everyday people can volunteer and make a difference.

“Some volunteers stay for a couple of weeks, to gain fencing experience so they can then train up other new recruits,” they said.

“It’s sort of a chain reaction, and the end result is to

relieve pressure and stress on those seeking our assistance.

“For example, with flood damage, it can be quite depressing looking at the debris covered fences each day, and some property owners feel so overwhelmed that they just don’t know where or how to make a start.

“However, when they hear we have a team willing to help, it gives them a much needed boost of energy and motivation, and lifts their morale to the point that they are able to cope much better, especially when the end result has been achieved.

“We’re working in three Shires (Murrindindi, Mitchell & Strathbogie) making our tasks a much bigger area to cover.

“Some volunteers choose to come for day trips from their places of residence, while others choose to come and camp onsite where we provide three meals a day, hot showers etc.

“Volunteers just need to arrange their own accommodation, but we do have a couple of other options if accommodation is difficult to organise.

“We recently had a new volunteer join us after seeing one of our posters, and on his second day out in the field, he felt great satisfaction with seeing the work we achieved to help someone else, and the difference it made.”

Is this our future under renewable energy?

LAST Thursday we were thrust into the future.

Across the entire Strathbogie Shire, we were given an opportunity to experience life without electricity for a full day.

In this instance we had advance warning from AusNet that this outage was planned and necessary to allow essential maintenance to the local network to be undertaken.

Commerce, retail traders, farmers, manufacturing, businesses and homeowners all felt the negative impact of being without power on a business day.

Many shops and commercial premises were unable to operate with staff being told not to come to work.

The economic and social loss to the region was large.

However, this futuristic experience will become more frequent and common if our federal and state Labor governments continue their ideologically driven rush towards an energy network that relies solely on ‘renewable’ energy sources.

If governments continue to dismantle our current power stations and grids ahead of any reliable and capable replacement energy source being ready, then we are headed for more power shortages, power sharing and blackouts.

And these will occur without any warning.

The lights will simply go out.

I am all in favour of looking after our

environment and minimising harm to our planet, but the current government’s blinkered ideologically driven rush to remove fossil fuels from our energy generation mix will mean that we are destined to run short of electricity.

All at a time when they want to ban gas; mandate that your home is fully electric; and insist that you drive an electric car!

We live in the 21st century.

Who would ever have thought that an energy rich nation like Australia would ever be facing such a dire outlook?

The future for Australia indeed looks bleak unless our government policy makers start to behave more rationally in relation to our nations power supply.

Does anybody know when anything is on?

THE third Saturday of the month, I wait listening to ABC radio for someone to phone and say the farmer’s market is on and how many stalls they have.

I also hope to hear from the Euroa Cinema with the latest movie showings, like Swanpool.

I hear nothing.

I also hear nothing about the community garden and when they meet.

I walked through Euroa’s community garden, and would have liked to sit and take my time to linger.

I could not as there is nowhere to sit in the park or the garden.

We only have two parks not attached

to the Seven Creeks, and this garden is struggling to take off.

Is the Men’s Shed coming to help with things like seating in the community garden?

If not, will the garden be doing a call out for outdoor seating?

Community learning on offer in town COMMUNITY Learning Euroa (CLE) is holding its first annual general meeting as an incorporated body tomorrow at 5.30pm and the public is invited to join us.

CLE is a learning organisation supported by a group of interested residents who are committed to eventually securing funding for a Neighbourhood House in Euroa, providing a central venue for education services, second chance learning, government contacts, drop in facilities and an umbrella organisation to support community groups.

CLE is already offering pre accredited courses through MACE (Mansfield Adult Community Education) and the Be Connected program, Digital Literacy for over 55 year olds.

If you have an interest in these programs or feel you have something to contribute, please come along on Thursday evening.

Euroa community rows for brain cancer research ANOTHER edition of the Connor’s Erg Challenge at the Euroa Gym has been held with more than $50,000 raised for brain cancer research.

Scores of locals turned out to rack up the target of 1000km across the gym’s rowing machines to raise awareness and important funding for brain cancer research.

The event grew exponentially off the back of last year’s success with local MP, Annabelle Cleeland, attributing this to the powerful advocacy of Dustin Perry.

“Dustin is an absolute inspiration, driving this event and raising an incredible amount for brain cancer research,” Ms Cleeland said.

“He is incredibly passionate and has had some amazing support from the community and the Euroa Gym. “To see so many locals sweating it out on the rowing machines for such a great cause is amazing.

“I was inspired by Chelsea, and her powerful mother, Tracey.

“Chelsea is now in remission thanks in no small part to the work of the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation.”

Ms Cleeland said the research and development focus of the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation was delivering tangible outcomes.

“The funding raised today will go straight into research and looking for ways to treat brain cancer and achieve greater outcomes for patients,” Ms Cleeland said.

For anyone who is wondering the Third Age Club has

such a name, here is some more information.

The original name was the Euroa Elderly Citizens Club, before being changed to its current name by members of the club years ago.

First age is from birth to adulthood, the second age is from young adulthood to retirement, and the third age is for those who no longer have the family responsibilities they had over the years - although many are still babysitting or helping family in some way.

Under normal circumstances, the club holds many activities during the week but unfortunately the floods have made the building unusable.

It is still not known when the building will be back in action for these activities.

Currently line-dancing and tai chi are being held at St Paul’s church hall, with line-dancing running Monday and Tuesday mornings from 9:30am-12pm, and tai chi on Thursday mornings from 9:30am-11am.

New participants are always welcome at all times.

WOMEN’S DAY EVENT: Council’s International Women’s Day will kick off with a morning tea at “The Falls” (pictured) in Longwood East.

Community invited to attend International Women’s Day event COUNCIL is inviting the community to celebrate International Women’s Day on Wednesday, March 8.

Held annually, International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the theme for this year’s United Nations International Women’s Day was “Cracking the code: Innovation for a gender equal future” and “Embrace Equity”.

“We are celebrating IWD and this year’s theme with a special morning tea event at The Falls - a picturesque garden in Longwood East,” Cr Binks said.

“The event will feature guest speaker Lauren Woodman - an osteopathic doctor, embodiment coach and the founder and director of Seven Sisters Festival - the world’s largest women’s wellness festival which she founded at 24 years old.

“She is also the co-author of the Amazon bestseller ‘The Evolved Woman,’ Telstra Young Business Woman’s Awards Finalist and a VU Young Achiever Alumni Awards finalist.”

Lauren’s creativity and understanding of wellbeing and

human nature has enabled her to design a potent and creative contribution to the health and wellbeing industry for women which is run in the heart of Central Victoria.

Lauren has a unique ability to tune in, read and connect with people’s bodies, hearts and minds providing invaluable insights to help guide individuals to a deeper understanding of themselves.

Mayor Laura Binks will also join Lauren as a guest speaker at the event.

Cr Binks sits on Rural Councils Victoria as its northeast representative.

Challenges present during droughts and flooding rains BUSINESSES in Strathbogie Shire can now access free support to analyse their water use and plan for future droughts and floods.

Strathbogie Shire Council and Water Stewardship Asia Pacific are offering local businesses a free Water RoadMap Workshop to assess their own water use, information on catchment issues, and support to identify opportunities to contribute to collective catchment outcomes.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the Water RoadMap workshop provided an instant assessment of water use, governance and challenges

against 23 critical water-related indicators, including issues such as water use and wastewater management, social and environmental values, business risk and impacts of climate change.

“Participants in the project will be able to take part in a joint workshop to share their water risks and challenges with others,” Cr Binks said.

“It’s also a chance to discuss ways they can plan and manage future water shocks - such as drought and floods - by working together to build resilience and better catchment outcomes.”

Water Stewardship chief ex-

ecutive officer Rod Knight said the Water RoadMap delivered a quick and easy way for businesses to understand their water use and provided the foundation for planning to build business resilience and continuity under a changing climate.

“Most businesses who engage with Water Stewardship are able to reduce their water use and water costs, and by planning ahead are better placed to deal with water challenges when they arise,” he said.

“A water crisis during drought is the last time to be preparing to manage the water-related risks that affect

businesses and communities.”

The project is funded by Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and will introduce Water Stewardship to Strathbogie Shire and nearby areas to assist businesses, council and other stakeholders in addressing shared water challenges in the catchment.

Push continues for female change rooms upgrade

TIME FOR AN UPGRADE: Support is growing for upgrading the female change rooms at Euroa’s Memorial Oval, with a great turnout at an event last week. to get changed.

“It will ensure that female teams have an adequate and attractive space to meet.”

The process to get this underway is still ongoing, but Ms Watson has been planning the improvements with local plumber Scott Embling, who has been a big part of the process.

“Currently we have a design

of a new female change room at Memorial Oval that has been prepared in conjunction with the Strathbogie Shire Council,” Ms Watson said.

“With ongoing support from both Strathbogie Shire Council and the user groups of Memorial Oval we will need financial assistance from Local, State and/or Federal Government to

see a major project on this site achieved.

“Most of all we will need the support of the community behind this project as it is an asset for our community.

“An asset were we can provide an avenue for females to participate in a whole range of sport in this town at Memorial Oval.”

People have a boot scootin’ time at Longwood Beer, Wine and Cider Festival at the weekend LONGWOOD’S annual Beer, Wine and Cider festival was held on Saturday, with a great day had by all who attended.

The festival remains a huge highlight on both the Longwood and shire-wide calendar, with the attendance numbers often considerably outnumbering the local population.

Held at the Longwood Recreation Reserve, the festival acts like a giant outdoor marketplace, bringing together a who’s who of local producers to cater for all your predilections.

Live music was held all day courtesy of The Settlement, Seamus McCorry & The Televised Mind, Ally Row, Cafe Django, and Russell Downie.

Despite being a boozy day for some, there was plenty to keep the kids entertained while you enjoyed the rest.

NAGAMBIE MECHANICS INSTITUTE 150 YEARS: The Nagambie Mechanics Institute (NMI) is celebrating 150 years in 2023 with four events.

The NMI will conduct three other events throughout the year to celebrate their 150th milestone, and to raise funds for a modernised kitchen.

Autumn Cattle Show coming soon FOLLOWING the success of the Euroa Show last December, and the Horse Show held in early March, the Euroa Agricultural Society will be holding its annual Autumn Beef Cattle Show on Sunday, March 12 at the Euroa Showgrounds.

Members of the Euroa Agricultural Society have been busy since the end of the COVID restrictions and are pleased to be able to host these amazing rural events for the community once more.

No less than two show rings will be in operation over the weekend, with ring one featuring British cattle.

In ring two, Bos Indicus, European and Small Breed cattle will feature.

The culmination of the Show will be the awarding of ‘Grand Champions’ of each of the British, Bos Indicus, European and Small Breeds.

Ultimately, they will compete for the prestigious title of “2023 Supreme Exhibit”.

Elders Euroa is the main sponsor of these competitions.

The activity will continue with the Commercial section, followed by the groups, handlers and then the junior judging.

There is also a feature class where exhibitors assemble a group of three beasts from the same breed to compete against each other for the

In previous years more than 130 head of cattle have been on show at the Euroa Beef Cattle Show, covering 15 different breeds.

Many of these cattle have been to Canberra Royal and then will go on to compete at

Sydney Royal at Easter.

This year we have had sponsors ranging from stock feed suppliers, stud breeders, Melbourne Royal Show, local stock agents, and agricultural suppliers.

Over $6000 in prizes and product is on offer.

The community are invited, and entry to the Showgrounds is free.

Catering will be available onsite, as will be a raffle with some excellent prizes to be won.

Community makes a splash at NOW festival THE 16th edition of the Nagambie on Water (NOW) Festival has been a resounding success with Nagambie welcoming visitors from across the state to enjoy an array of on water activities and market stalls around Lake Nagambie.

The annual Costa Community Canoe Challenge was opened by local MP Annabelle Cleeland, who paid tribute to the important work of local emergency service and frontline worker, including Victoria Police, the CFA, Ambulance Victoria and Nagambie Healthcare.

“Each of these organisations contribute so much to our community - protecting, serving and keeping each and every one of us safe,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Our ambulance and Victoria Police teams see us on our very worst days, and they are the selfless people that run towards danger to help us in the most trying and vulnerable situations.

He said to help meet this target, the government is reviving the State Electricity Commission and bringing back government owned renewable energy - to drive down energy costs and help create 59,000 jobs.

“We know Victorians are doing it tough with the rising cost of energy - that’s why we’ll have a new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus, putting money in families’ pockets and making sure they’re on the best deal,” he said.

“We’re driving down bills and putting power back in Victorians’ hands by bringing back the SEC and delivering cheap, clean, sustainable energy.”

The Labor Government is also reducing cost of living stress through the new Energy Assistance Program, a free service providing energy consumers experiencing hardship with one-on-one assistance.

The Energy Assistance Program is a $3.75 million initiative that will help Victorians struggling with power bills to navigate the energy market, apply for eligible grants and concessions, find and switch to better offers and address billing errors.

For those without

internet access, overthe-phone and in-person support is available through one of our Community Outreach Partners, including Brotherhood of St Laurence, Ethnic Community Council Victoria, Good Shepherd, State Trustees and hundreds of Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria.

Victorians can also save on their household energy bills through the $1.3 billion Solar Homes Program by installing solar PV systems, batteries, solar hot water and heat pumps.

Garden club excited for a big ‘23 THE Euroa Garden Club began 2023 with a very enjoyable afternoon meeting.

Although it was a very hot day, the meeting room at the Show Ground Pavilion was very comfortable with great air conditioning.

The return of Garden Club was greatly anticipated and 50 members attended.

This was a great attendance considering the weather.

It was lovely to welcome several new members and guests, we hope more people interested in gardens and gathering with a happy,

Rodney brought a selection of blooms to demonstrate the varieties to the delight of the audience.

He also spoke about the care of chrysanthemums and how to grow them in pots and in garden beds.

We learnt a lot about how to get the best out of these beautiful flowers.

The club hopes to visit Rodney’s nursery in Invergordon in the near future as he also specialises in Chrysanthemums.

Generously, Rodney and

his wife Shirley, donated a hanging basket as a raffle prize and all the proceeds of the plants he brought for sale were donated to the Dookie/Devenish fund raiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

There were many questions for Rodney before he completed such an interesting session.

The afternoon concluded with delicious afternoon tea supplied by Deb Ellis.

The next meeting of the Euroa Garden Club will be March 17 at 1.30pm in the Show Ground Pavilion.

We hope for a large attendance and would welcome any new members.

Become more energy efficient with grants opening soon ROUND one of the Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) will open on Monday, March 6.

The grant opportunity provides small and medium businesses funding to replace or upgrade existing equipment to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.

This will contribute to Australia’s target of a 43 per cent reduction on 2005 emission levels by 2030.

Grants between $10,000 and $25,000 are available to cover up to 100 per cent of project costs.

To be eligible to apply you must be an Australian business with less than 200 employees.

You can use this grant

funding for: • Purchasing higher energy efficiency equipment to replace existing equipment; • costs to decommission, remove or dispose of old equipment that is replaced; • purchasing equipment or components to help an existing system run more efficiently; • building permits or approval costs to install equipment; or • the cost of suppliers, consultants and contracted labour undertaking eligible project activities.

enterprises-round-1 Grant funding will be distributed between states and territories based on the distribution of small and medium sized businesses nationally.

An estimated 180 grants are available in Victoria.

It is expected there may be a high level of interest for this grant opportunity, so it is very important that you apply for a grant as quickly as possible after the round opens on March 6.

It is also important to carefully read the grant opportunity guidelines before applying.

GRANTS AVAILABLE: Round one of the Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) will open next week, providing an opportunity for local businesses to receive up to $25,000 in funding.

Sporting vouchers re-open for kids

ANOTHER round of the Get Active Kids Voucher Program has now opened, allowing eligible families to apply for a voucher of up to $200 to cover sporting costs including equipment, uniforms and memberships.

There are 1,600 registered providers of the vouchers across the state with applications closing on May 10.

To be eligible, children must be aged 18 and under, a Victorian resident, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card and named on a valid Medicare card.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging families to apply for

sporting vouchers.

“Household budgets are being stretched at the moment, with the cost of living skyrocketing,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We all know how expensive sport and recreation can be, but we certainly don’t want to see any children missing out on sport due to this financial burden.

“These vouchers can be used to ensure kids are fitted out in the right uniform and have the equipment they need to compete and enjoy sport with their mates.”

With winter sports about to get up and running, now is the time to look for a local club to join.

BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT Division 3 In the last home and way game for the season Avenel had a three rink win against Nagambie 16 - 81 to 0 - 60.

Finishing only four points outside the top four, that is season 2022/23 done and dusted for Avenel division 3 mid-week pennant.

Winning sixteen ends Nyoli Bell, Jenny Furletti, Graham Lewis, Geoff Hateley (s) won 33 - 19. Nagambie threw out a challenge on the 19th end with a five to come within three shots of the lead. However, Avenel refocused and won the last six consecutive ends for the well-deserved win.

Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) were six down on the 13th end after Nagambie won eight of the first thirteen ends. Avenel won the next five ends to lead by six. Nagambie fought back to draw even with one end to bowl but Avenel won the last end and the game 23 22.

Pam Pedder, Rob Kemp, Spud Furletti, Dennis McGregor (s) were down six shots on the 21st end. Scoring twelve shots over the remaining four ends including a six on the 23rd end was a gallant effort for a come from behind win 25 - 19.

WEEKEND PENNANT Division 7 A mighty effort for the Avenel team to a secure a win against Seymour to claim fourth place on the ladder and a place in the finals in the last game for the home and away season. The final score was Avenel 14 - 54 to Seymour 0 - 21.

WEEKEND PENNANT Division 3.

Avenel travelled to Stanhope where the home team needed a win to secure a top four position and to play finals. Job done for Stanhope winning 16 - 120 to Avenel 2 - 86.

The only winning rink for Avenel was Ron Harrison, Rusty Schwab, Spud Furletti, Brett McDonald (s) They came from behind to take the lead on the 12th end with a four.

Then were seven up on the 19th end when the Stanhope lads won four consecutive ends to be one behind.

In a tense final end skip Brett McDonald drew two perfect bowls through a crowded head to rest millimetres from the kitty nudging out Stanhopes best bowl giving Avenel the win 21 -18.

Norm Billingsley, Jenny Furletti, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) lost 22 24 but not before putting up a fight.

Stanhope led for the entire game bar three ends where the scores were even.

Continually nipping at their heels, Avenel scored a four on the 22nd end to come within two of Stanhope.

But the hosts answered back with their own four and held onto to the two shot margin for the win.

Quickly down 1 - 11 by the 6th end, Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Noel Slater (s) toiled away to reduce the deficit to 2 by the 16th end.

A telling 7 - 2 end wins by Stanhope gave them the win by five shots, 15 - 20.

George Pedler, Pam Pedder, James Wall, Jake Wall (s) lost 16 - 39.

Incurring a fourteen-shot deficit early, they chipped away to reduce that deficit to eight at smoko.

Stanhope had a purple

patch scoring twelve shots in three ends immediately after smoko.

From there Stanhope were too good and increased its lead to win by 23 shots.

GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB GAIL Allen and Matt Mills, two of Euroa’s best golfers were winners in the final competition round for the 22/23 season played as Stableford on Saturday.

Gail is having a purple patch at the moment and has had three wins on the trot scoring 37 points from her 13 handicap while Matt Mills won the Men’s event with 39 points from his handicap of just one.

Matt had a really good round going and could have gone much lower had his putter behaved on the last two holes.

Michelle Thomson took out Division 2 also on 37 points.

Bev Jungwirth, Robyn Anthony and Jean Duff all had 36.

Judy McLean collected a drive and pitch and nearest the pin on 18.

Forty-eight men played on Saturday and Paul Jones took out Division 2 with 40 points which will see the handicapper bring him in.

Plugger Corradin had 38 which included two 2 ball birdies.

Chris Burke and Ash Pedder both had 37 in Division 1 and in Division 2 Bruce Demmery had 38 and the evergreen Geoff Vincent also had 37.

Rik Langlands and Richard Johnson were both on 36.

Friday twilight was the final round of the Keith Seeber Trophy and this year’s winner is Mick Keeley.

Mick has been around his handicap over the four rounds, but this week’s best round was Melissa Eddy with 22 points.

Captain Ross took the

nearest the pin on 18 with his shot that hit the flag stick and very nearly could have been an ace.

Wednesday Stableford was full of excellent scores, none better than Lucas Paul whose 43 points was five shots better than his handicap of nine and will see him playing on a low single figure handicap.

Jeff Moran also had a good day with 40 points while Frank O’Connor, Geoff Kitterley and Ian Sutherland all had 38.

Lots of players including visitors to town were out over the weekend.

After golf on Saturday, Gaz Ritchie drew the $5 squares and three lucky groups picked up some cash prizes before he conducted the players auction for the twilight pub shootout which will be played this week.

Gary, who was last year’s runner up when he crashed at the 18th, will be keen to go one better and reward the punter who put him into favourite status.

Smart money was also paid for Melissa Eddy who is playing beautifully at the moment and well inside her 16 handicap.

She will be hard to beat in the field of 10 playing in the knockout shoot out format on Friday afternoon.

It’s sure to be a fun event for players and spectators.

A working bee was conducted Sunday, getting the course in tip top condition for the autumn tournament on the Labour Day long weekend.

Saturday is the 18 holes stroke for men and women in two Divisions and Monday is the George Andrews Mixed Pineshurst.

The junior golf twilight series for boys and girls 6-16 years started Monday February 27 and continues until the March 27.

The B & C Grade winner was Ronda Richards with +5.

The nine hole winner was Karyn Thompson with +3 on a C/B from Ronda and Annette Mills.

Eighteen hole balls down the line went to Ronda +5, Marg Harrison +4 and Karyn +2.

There were no nearest the pins winners.

Chicken Run Thursday February 23 The winner was Terry Clonan with 22 points on a count back from Chris Roberts.

The smile went off Terry’s face when he lost two strokes off his handicap.

The nearest the pins on the 3rd was Cathy Lawrence and on the 8th Shaun Bryant.

Weekend Competition It was a big weekend in golf for the Nagambie Golf Club.

Friday afternoon saw 36 player’s or 9 teams compete for the Costa Mushroom’s sponsored four person Ambrose.

The winning quartet were Jason Lavryssen, Rhys Shepherd, Phil Neville and Tim Baldwin completing the nine holes in a two under par 34 to record a winning net score of 28.13 with some big bombs from the tee and solid putting ensuring the win.

Many thanks go to all that attended the summer series of Ambrose events; we hope to do it all again next summer.

The good turnouts continued on Sunday with a large field rolling up for a Stableford event in magnificent late summer conditions.

The course was in good order which allowed 11 players to finish their day 36 points or better.

The winner was the ‘Murch East Mauler’ Jim Ewart with 40 points.

Ewart described his day as consistent with large chunks of luck.

Well done Jim. The runner up with a stellar round of two under the card but unfortunately losing on countback was Michael Roberts with 40 points, playing off the low handicap of 3 and compiling 40 points.

Third place went to visiting golfer from Canberra Andy Boyd obviously taking a liking to the Nagambie course with 39 points.

The nearest the pins went to ‘The Legend’ Barry Cryer on the 3rd.

David Sudholz made good on the 8th.

A welcome return for the first time this year was John James taking out the 13th and Graeme Galvin as he does regularly smashing it to the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be a monthly medal stroke event with B. Cryer on office duty and T. Baldwin in the bar.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB Stableford was played on Saturday, February 25 at Strathbogie Golf Club.

The men’s winner was Brayden Miller with 41 points.

CFA teams continue strong form TATURA was the place to be last weekend with both junior and senior CFA teams from Euroa heading across to show off their skills.

The juniors started off the weekend on Saturday coming home with two firsts and a third, walking home with third overall for the day.

This was another great effort for the Euroa Juniors as a lot of runners ran in several different positions and helped out other teams on the day.

The seniors then headed over on Sunday, putting together some amazing

runs coming home with a second, two fourths and two fifths.

With a brand new resealed running track the teams will be training up hard this week before heading to Echuca this weekend.

Time for finals for local tennis aces WITH a few of the tennis young guns heading off to Melbourne to catch Harry Styles, the match of the day from a Euroa perspective was between St Pauls and Longwood at 10am Saturday.

Sarah Ternes and Megan O’Bree won a tight match against Deb Seach and Molly Redfern, while Bede Redfern and Jacob Tarran pipped Declan Weston and Scott Watson in a cliff hanger 8-7.

Faye Mollison played her two ladies sets with Megan and Sarah, winning both for St Pauls whilst the Longwood men Bede, Scott Meehan and Jacob won all their sets.

It was a tight morning’s tennis until Father daughter combination Jake and Ella Hill cruised to an 8-3 win over the Longwood father daughter combination of Scott and Lilly Meehan.

In the end there were only eight games in favour of St Pauls, who now go onto the grand finale against Strathbogie.

At a more conventional time, Moglonemby played Strathbogie with Kristen Davey and Marlene Hanrahan just losing to Mayra Walsh and Mel McLachlan 6-8, while Mog men Keighan Hicks and Michael Nolan tied the match 8-6 over Marco Carafi and Anthony Burgess.

There were only two other sets that caused a problem for Moglonemby and they both featured Marco Carafi winning 8-3 with Craig Mercuri and 8-0 with Mayra Walsh.

These sets were decisive in Strathbogie’s win.

Congrats to them as they have been grand finalists in each of their three years since reforming.

Gooram played Benalla Gardens Gold in the repechage semi-final with two emergency men coming up from B Division to help, in Greg Rowe and Craig Durkin.

Sands kicked it off with an 8-4 whilst Craig Durkin (on fire) and Mark Borthwick landed an 8-1.

But it was the three ladies including Kim McCabe that nailed it for Gooram.

Kim winning all 3 sets decisively was the winning move 8-1, 8-1, 8-3.

Gooram won 19 games to play in Benalla next week for the McCabe Cup. St Pauls B played their semi-final against Avenel White.

Kelly Hill and Rosie Cameron 8-1, whilst Jim Gall and Jason Goss 8-3 got St Pauls off to the perfect start and then went on to win the next four sets in a devastating display of tennis.

St Pauls were just too strong winning eight of the nine sets and 24 games.

Once again Kelly Hill got the Brownlow votes and set St Pauls up for a great chance to win the flag.

Next week’s finals will be held at Benalla Lawn, featuring Euroa’s St Pauls in both the A and B final and Gooram in the repechage final.

The final round of juniors will be played this coming Friday at ELTC culminating with the grand final between the Djokers and the Barty Party.

This will be a tight affair and good luck to both teams making it to the final.

Violet Town bowls returns with twilight tournament

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES FEBRUARY 25 saw Violet Town Bowls Club host their first twilight tournament in years, it was a great success.

Three teams each from Euroa and Rushworth, a team from Avenel, Nagambie and Benalla and some new entries from Mooroopna & Hilltop were all a part of a fantastic evening.

The camaraderie amongst the bowlers is great.

The day had a beautiful warm start, and only the cool breeze after a beautiful sunset spoiled the evening a little.

The surrounds of the top green looked beautiful after some extra work by our guys before Saturday’s Pennant

game (a terrific win against a depleted Alexandra team).

Winners of the spider and ditch to ditch comp’s were David Furletti (Avenel) and Josh Warren (Shepp Park).

Winner of the best last game was Lyn Sinden’s team from Nagambie, Runners-up were Sue Moreton’s combo team from Rushworth/Hilltop, and the winners were the Warren Family, who have been regular attendees for years.

Raffle winners were Barry Ibbott winning the Beaton’s Silk Cut Meats meat tray, Graham McNutt - Jackson’s Produce Store fruit basket; Lyn Sinden and Neville each took home a bottle of Frewin’s olive oil.

We asked Allan Smith to

draw the tickets and then spoke about him being our oldest Novice Singles entrant of the seven our club had in the Goulburn Murray event this year.

There were lots of hugs at the end of the evening with promises from all they’d be back!

A huge thank you to everyone who came together to help on the day, love your work, the kitchen and bar don’t run on their own, and raffle ticket selling takes time!

Batting first, Euroa looked solid throughout much of the innings, posting a respectable 7/146 and using all 45 of their allocated overs.

Nick Hill (49) and Scott Hamilton (39) stood out, both making big scores against a quality side.

Unfortunately, quick wickets saw the score go from 1/89 to 5/118 before some resistance at the end saw the side through.

When it was Kyabram’s turn to bat, their quick scoring immediately put pressure back on Euroa.

Despite good bowling performances from Cohen Paul (3/41), Sham Dadallage (2/34) and an economical Ryan Hill (0/17 off 6 overs), the Kyabram side chased down Euroa’s total in just 31.4 overs.

pulled off a fantastic win on Saturday, chasing down a monster total thanks to consistent batting performances from their top and middle order.

John Brodie (53) and Ash Ellis (39) led the way with big totals, however there was support from nearly all batsmen.

Euroa’s bowlers managed to restrict an aggressive Shepparton list to 208, bowling them out in the 36th over despite some early fireworks from the batsmen.

A strong opening bowling partnership from Walters and Grant ensured that despite some big hitting, wickets continued to tumble.

Great win for C grade cricketers

By JACK WILSON Euroa 4-86 (M Gleeson 35no, F Paul 26) defeated Invergordon 10/83 - (J Walters 3/7, G Kirk 3/25) ON Saturday, Euroa C grade hosted Invergordon at Memorial Oval in ideal conditions for cricket.

Captain Paul Anderson lost the toss and Euroa were sent to bowl first on a wicket with plenty of grass cover making bowling conditions ideal.

Grayson Kirk came into the attack and had immediate effect with the ball being snicked behind to wicket keeper Cale Robertson.

A 27 run partnership

by Invergordon was broken when the ball was hit straight to Paul off Grayson’s bowling which started a middle and lower order collapse with Jack Walters, Nathan Butler and Grayson claiming the last five wickets to bowl Invergordon out for just 83.

All Saturday Pennant sides make finals

By AUDREY MCINTOSH WEEKEND BOWLS THE Saturday Pennant for the season came to a finish with all the home and away matches being completed on the weekend, with all Euroa sides confirming a place in the finals.

All teams played against Kyabram, with division two and six away, and division four at home in Euroa.

Division two lost their match but division four and six were victors for the day.

Next Saturday, the elimination and qualifying finals will be played.

Division two and four both finished in third position, while division six placed second.

Please check the window notes at the club to see all the names and where you are playing for the finals.

BUSINESS HOUSE BOWLS Week five games were played last Wednesday, with the Hurlers still on top of the ladder with 40 points.

Moore Builders and Lindsay Park sit below them with 36 points, while Lions and Castle Creek have 32 points.

There was an important win for the Gazette team as they build some confidence towards the end of the season.

This week will be the last night of the series and the club is hopeful that all players enjoyed their nights for the last six weeks.

It remains anyone’s game to see who the winner will be.

FINALS AWAIT: Jim Perry plans his next bowl for Euroa on the weekend.

Croquet returns for 2023 with two district teams EUROA Croquet Club has entered two teams, the Euroa Pies and Strathbogie, into the GV Autumn Pennant Competition which is being played across the Goulburn Valley.

This competition has been developed for newcomers to the game of croquet and as Euroa Croquet Club has increased its membership to 35+ members over the last couple of years our new members are getting the opportunity to ease into competitive play.

Watch this space for updates throughout the season.

We welcome members of the community to come and try the game on Wednesday mornings at 9am or Friday evenings from 4.30pm.
