The Inland Rail project has been widely debated in the community, with a working group first established in 2019.

in the town, established through surveys and previous consultations, has been for an underpass rather than a new higher bridge to replace the current structure at Anderson Street.

The ARTC has seemingly preferred the overpass option, stating the

underpass would be a far more complex idea with more risks to mitigate.

Ed Walker, the general manager of Victoria and South Australia projects for the ARTC, spoke about the next steps for the inland rail project in Euroa and what the community can expect to see over the coming months.

“Through community feedback, ARTC has clearly heard the community’s preferred option for

replacing the Anderson St Bridge to allow for the safe passage of double-stacked freight trains is a vehicle underpass,” he said.

“In recognition of the community’s preference of a vehicle underpass and the additional complexities required for this solution, we have undertaken additional technical studies to better understand the road safety, flooding and emergency management

impacts and risks that would require mitigating.

“Prior to progressing the underpass solution to the next phase of design, we want to share information from the additional studies and invite your feedback.

“We’ll also share updated visualisations showing the mitigation measures required and answer any questions you may have about this updated information.”

Euroa holds Australia Day ceremony MEMBERS of the local community were present to recognise and celebrate award recipients at Euroa’s Australia Day ceremony last Thursday.

The theme for the day was “Reflect, Respect, Celebrate.”

With the ongoing effect of the recent floods precluding the regular Australia Day event from being held in its usual place at the Sevens Creek, the volunteer Australia Day Committee chose the Lions Park in Hemley Avenue as a suitable alternate venue for the 2023 ceremony.

Many attendees commented that the venue was perfect for such an occasion, providing good shade, level ground, excellent parking, and good disabled access.

The weather was perfect for the gathering, being warm and with slightly overcast skies.

by Euroa Rotary, and under marquees provided by the Strathbogie Shire, everyone was comfortable sitting in an amazing park, which is another of Euroa’s amazing assets.

Independent Member for Indi Helen Haines provided the committee with a new Australian National Flag for the occasion, and also provided 100 hand-held flag wavers for everyone in attendance, which were very well received.

The small volunteer Australia Day Committee, led

by Stephanie Swift, put together a program for the day that would provide a vehicle for the community to come together to celebrate Australia Day. The ceremony also recognised and awarded our local heroes -individuals

GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Therese Anderson gave a speech on kindness to those at the ceremony. and community groups that volunteer their time and services in the Shire, who in the previous year had done extraordinary things.

The ceremony kicked off with music provided by Bill Ely and his band, The Eurockafellas, a seven piece band that proved to be extremely popular, playing a selection of iconic Australian songs throughout the day.

Master of Ceremonies Frank York led the ceremony, with Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and Councillor Kristy Hourigan in attendance.

Mayor Laura Binks and local Councillor Sally-Hayes Burkes were apologies and not in attendance.

Cr Hourigan delivered the ‘Councillors Address’ whilst special guest Dr Therese Anderson provided the ‘Australia Day Address’.

Her address was entitled “Kindness” and was well received by the audience as the message of needing more kindness in our daily lives was relayed.

The official ceremonies concluded with everyone enjoying a complimentary BBQ provided by the Australia Day Committee and cooked and served up by the Lions Club, led by Jacki Penman, her husband and the Lions Club volunteers.

With The Eurockafellas continuing to play a great selection of iconic Australia music to round out the event, everyone enjoyed a chat and a catch up, whilst partaking of the barbeque and a cool drink.

The Australia Day Committee thanked everyone that contributed to making the day a “huge success and another great display of community togetherness that Euroa should be very proud of.”

ARTC to resume community consultation as underpass concept proposed ■

Fronm page 1 Focus groups are set to begin this month, with community members having the option to voice their opinion after being shown what the underpass option will look like and the impact it will have.

The ARTC have engaged an independent consultant to conduct the groups and facilitate a presentation and discussion on the updated underpass information.

These sessions will be held on Tuesday, February 21 and Wednesday, February 22.

Morning, afternoon and evening sessions will be available, for a period of two hours, with food and refreshments provided.

The ARTC shopfront on Binney Street will also be extending opening hours and adding extra dates during February, encouraging more community members to have discussions about the project and proposed underpass.

“We will share the final design outcome with the community as soon as we can.

“The final design outcome will be progressed into reference design.

“This will include both the road solution and the Euroa Station precinct layout and will be available to share with the Euroa community in 2023.

“We are looking forward to continuing to work with you and hearing the community’s feedback on the designs.”

Euroa Health CEO steps down

By GUS RIDDER AFTER three years in the role, Cherree Hunter is set to resign from her position as Euroa Health chief executive officer later this month.

The decision was confirmed in a statement from the hospital’s Chairman Linsey Siede in January, with Ms Hunter set to depart the role on February 24, 2023.

In the statement, Ms Hunter’s resignation was reported as being due to changing family circumstances.

“Unfortunately, family circumstances at this time require Cherree’s full attention, and these important family issues will leave her unable to fulfil her duties at Euroa Health,” Mr Siede said.

The statement went on to thank Ms Hunter for her time

in the role, listing some of her achievements from the past three years.

“Cherree has done an outstanding job for both Euroa Health and the Euroa community in a really tough environment, and having time to reflect on the achievements of the past three years there is a great deal of which Cherree is extremely proud of,” Mr Siede said.

“Securing funding via the submission of numerous grant applications has allowed Cherree to see that her vision for improvement and innovation is shared by others, and over the past several years has secured over $1.5m in grants for Euroa Health.

“The return of radiology has been one of Cherree’s greatest achievements, and the steps from sourcing grant

“We thank Cherree sincerely for her huge commitment over the past three years; her neverending dedication to Euroa Health and the local community; and the driven and proactive approach she has taken; and we wish her and her family all the very best for the future.”

The decision comes at a difficult time for the local health service, with the acute hospital still requiring significant and continued government funding to remain a viable option for the community.

SWAGGIE TREE: The iconic Euroa ‘Swaggie Tree’ has been suggested as a possible location of the original photo.

‘Swaggie Tree’ mystery

By GUS RIDDER THE iconic ‘Swaggie Tree’ in Euroa may fit into a long-standing mystery relating to a beloved photograph of a swagman from 125 years ago.

The photo, titled ‘Civilisation in the Bush’, was taken by John Duncan Peirce in 1898 and is currently archived among his other works at the State Library of Victoria.

In the picture, a swagman sits in front of a large hollow gum tree posed with several items in front of a fire.

The location shown in the picture has long been debated, but has been widely thought to be somewhere near the Shepparton region.

In 2018, Shepparton local Geoff Allemand was eager to find more information on the location of the tree, as well as information on the swagman pictured.

His research led him to believe the tree was near the Goul-

burn River, although no confirmation has been made.

Euroa resident Ron Horrigan believes that the tree in the photo is the ‘Swaggie Tree’ and it’s easy to see why.

The trees bear a striking resemblance, with the backdrop of the creek and tree line also giving credibility to his claims.

“I first saw the photo about ten years ago during the inception of social media,” he said.

“I personally think it is the same tree but I’m curious as to what others think.”

Mr Horrigan spoke fondly about the tree and its resilience to remain standing after all these years.

“I’m so impressed by the resilience of the species (river red gum), it’s one the most widespread and grows in every state but the resilience stands out,” he said.

“I’d love to know what caused it to burn if anyone knows; at this point we’re just blaming the swaggies.”

CIVILISATION IN THE BUSH: Mystery remains over the location of the tree featured in the 1898 photograph, with one resident suggesting it could be in Euroa.

right, with an arborist previously suggesting that it could be upwards of 1000 years old.

The tree itself is now behind a fence, with a boardwalk surrounding it, after construction to protect the iconic tree was carried out in 2014.

It has also been known as the ‘Shelter Tree’ after a cultural heritage assessment had suggested it would have been used

by Aboriginal people for centuries as a shelter - given its proximity to the creek and above the main flood zone.

The Taungurung view leaned towards it being a ‘Birthing Tree’ - a place of cultural significance for women and where they may have retreated when it was time for a birth.

The mystery of the location in the picture still remains, but Mr Horrigan hopes to at least pose the question to the community.

“I’m interested in knowing what people think about the trees and if they look as similar as I think,” he said.

We celebrate Australia Day; our nation, being Australian and we acknowledge our many blessings as the ‘lucky country’.

Reflecting on our roots helps keep us humble as well as grateful. We’ve been mainly faithful to our original JudeoChristian principles yet because mankind is fallible, we need to admit that we’ve often missed the mark.

Once poor and petty ‘criminals’ were transported here; but gained second chances to become free, prosperous, worldchangers and leaders. Injustices and mistakes have been made and sadly continue, especially regarding Indigenous Australians. It’s not enough to say we’re “Sorry”, if we don’t make amends and restitution. Since our earliest days, Gods’ Word informed our Justice system (James 1:27) and mainly continues, although we’re rapidly diverging from His guidelines; believing the lie of mans’ self-sufficiency without Him. (Isaiah 53:6) God is our ‘rod and staff’ (Psalm 23:4); protection and comfort.

Wise parenting involves teaching ‘children’ restraint from indulging every whim in the name of freedom or rights.

Freedom is also about choosing not to do what we ought not to, even if we can! God disciplines those children, (Heb 12:6) who have teachable spirits. (Mark 4:26) Throughout history, powerful empires like Rome, weren’t finally conquered by outside forces, but decayed from within.

As comfort and wealth increases, humanity succumbs to pride, boredom, greed, indulgences and moral corruption. Today firstworld nations are departing from Gods’ Truth to follow societys’ opinion about right and wrong. (James 4:17) Once, fervently Christian American leaders are forgetting the fore-fathers’ profound warnings, never to abandon faith in God. Israel did so and suffered greatly when God departed from them for a time.

(2 Kings 17:7-23) Sheep-like, Australia is following the same broad, dead-end road. (Matt.7:13-14) On the First Fleet, came Chaplain Richard Johnson. All who attended his first service near Sydney Cove on 3rd Feb 1788, heard inspiringly from Psalm 116:12; “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me.” Americas’ President JFK has said in his inaugural speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country!”

What should we render to Australia, rather than expecting her to keep providing to us?” A sense of entitlement, ungratefulness and abuse of our welfare system and intolerance to different views, will impoverish us all. Now, we’re side-lining God, whose wisdom formerly held sway. “Unless the Lord builds the house; they labour in vain.” (Psalm 127:1) Our Christian, Indigenous brothers and sisters of the outback, have raised a 20 metre Cross, a lit-up beacon of Hope, on Memory Mountain. (3 hrs West of Alice) They know, Jesus is the Answer for all peoples and nations. The Bible clearly warns against departing from our Creator (Jer. 17:5, Prov 21:2), because serious times are foretold for this age, before Jesus returns, but the Good News is that anyone can ‘renew their mind’(Rom.12:12) simply yielding their hearts to the Lord. Raise an Anthem to Jesus Christ, Lord and God for His Truth, Freedom and Love everlasting! Share the Dream, share the Vision!

COUNCIL is congratulating the community for their efforts to register pools and spas following a change to legislation in late 2019.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said 500 pools and spas had now been registered with council.

“Under legislation introduced by the Victorian Government in December 2019, all permanent pools and spas must be registered with council,” Cr Binks said.

“In addition, you may not be aware that any relocatable pools or spas erected for three days or more are also required to be registered and fenced in accordance with the current pool barrier standard.”

The top five locations for pool/spa ownership in Strathbogie Shire include:

Euroa (130) Nagambie (96) Avenel (48) Violet Town (36) Longwood (15) Cr Binks reminded the community that it was incredibly important to follow legislation which had been introduced to combat the rate of children drowning.

“Consistently, each year, the single most common location for children aged 0 to 4 years to drown is backyard pools,” she said.

“Keep the little ones safe, pool and spa barrier compliance is essential, especially at this time of the year.”

FAMILY FUN: Council’s ‘Family Fun Day’ was well appreciated by the region’s children, who engaged in fun activities to learn more about sustainability. Pictured is Charlotte Capstick, learning how to make animal toys from recycled textiles.

Fun for the kids CARDBOARD fairy wings, decorated reusable mugs and recycled textile dog toys were just some of the crafts created by kids at council’s Family Fun Day. The event was held on Friday, January 20 in both Nagambie and Euroa with children of all ages, including some babies in prams, enjoying the event.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was fantastic to see so many young people engaging in activities that also teach them about sustainability.

“We had our fantastic waste education officer on hand to demonstrate how a worm farm works and the children loved getting the chance to meet a worm and hold it in their hands,” Cr Binks said.

Ellie Robinson doubles up on awards

By GUS RIDDER LOCAL student Ellie Robinson has received two prestigious awards as part of her graduation from Euroa Primary School.

Despite only just turning 12 years old, Ellie’s high achievements in academics, sports, arts and her excellent attitude did not go unnoticed.

One of the awards Ellie received was the Weary Dunlop Award, an annual region-wide recognition for displaying high levels of resilience and overall excellence.

The awards have previously been presented to students across the region by former Member for Euroa Steph Ryan, with a trip to Parliament part of the prize.

Ellie’s mother Belinda was extremely proud of her daughter for winning the award and explained why she was chosen as the winner.

“I’m very proud and happy,” she said.

“It’s her persistence in all of her achievements; she’s always doing the right thing and has been a role model for other kids.

“She was house captain for two years in a row at the school too.”

Ellie was also presented with a Japanese scholarship award by the school.

The Japanese award, sponsored by the Rotary Club of

Euroa, is presented to a student that shows outstanding performances in the language subject.

As part of the award, Ellie will receive $150 to be put towards continuing the subject as she begins year 7 at Euroa Secondary College this year.

Having studied Japanese throughout her primary school years, Ellie was pleased to be recognised with the award.

“I’ve always been good at Japanese but I didn’t know that I would win the award,” Ellie said.

“I was really happy to win.

“I’m looking forward to continuing Japanese next year and all the other parts of going to the new school.

“New teachers, new friends, different classes, more people, it will all be good.”

Ellie’s achievements at the primary school came during an unusual time, with the past few years involving lots of remote learning and homeschooling.

“It was very different,” she said.

“The second year was easier after getting used to it and then it was strange going back to school again.

Belinda said that Ellie worked incredibly hard during that time and was very determined, and it seems that the hard work has paid off with the awards and recognition.

Reflecting on an election experience AS the holiday period draws to a close and life begins to resume it normal patterns, many of us are preparing to return to work, school or study and the state election feels like a lifetime ago.

I am preparing to go back into the classroom but I have had some time to reflect upon my experience campaigning across the electorate.

The most important lesson from my experience were the things I learnt from the wonderful people I met on the campaign trail.

Every community across the North East is filled with wonderful volunteers, giving so much of themselves to make their communities great places to live.

The Australia Day awards testify to this selfless work.

It was an honour and a privilege to meet the people across the Euroa electorate and I am grateful to those who shared their time, energy and concerns with me.

I am saddened I cannot assist them with their progress and I wish them all the best for the next four years.

I am also grateful for every vote that was given to me.

In the two-party preferred numbers, Labor achieved 40 per cent and enjoyed the largest swing in Victoria in a nonLabor seat.

That is fantastic news for our electorate

- there are more people hungry for a change and wanting greater action on the ground.

Thank you to all of those wonderful people in this region for being part of one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I hope to see you around.

It is a matter of fact that First Nations people suffer inequalities in justice, health, education and economic outcomes.

Governments have tried to improve these outcomes without success.

To change the way we address these inequalities makes sense, provides hope and is an act that underlines a show of respect.

Enshrining “The Voice” in our constitution does nothing more than provide an opportunity for First Nations people to have a say about laws and policies that impact their lives.

This is not radical or risky.

It is simply respectful to listen and value the views of members of our community who suffer from entrenched disadvantage.

Australia Day awards pay tribute to citizens, groups STRATHBOGIE Shire residents and community groups have been recognised in this year’s Australia Day Awards.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the awards recognised those in our community going above and beyond.

Prosecco name worth fighting for Australian Government talks with Italians towards securing g bilateral free trade agreement g

By STEVE KELLY WINEMAKERS across the King Valley are rallying behind the Australian Government for it to protect their use of the name Prosecco as the assistant minister for trade discusses the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Italian Government last week.

People like pioneer Prosecco grower, Otto Dal Zotto, who migrated from his mother country, and began producing the Prosecco grape variety in 1999.

It was 10 years before Italy renamed a town Prosecco, which it is now using to try and claim as a geographic indicator - a covenant on the Prosecco name.

But Mr Dal Zotto said it’s not the same as the geographic indicator of Champagne as this was named after the Champagne region, not a variety such as Pinot Noir or Chardonnay.

“I grew up in the area and Prosecco is in my blood, just like my dad and my grandfather,” he said.

“The situation has never been an issue for hundreds of years and this changed when a politician tried to change Prosecco from a variety to a region because of greed and money.”

Mr Dal Zotto warned that if the Australian Government gives into this, they will set a precedent for a few hundred more products across the world.

Claims for geographic indicators are also on agriculture products such as Feta and Parmesan cheese.

“When I started growing Prosecco, it was never to take anything away from the Italians, as I wanted to have something here that reminded me of back home,” Mr Dal Zotto said.

“I believe there is room for everybody to benefit off products like these.”

Assistant Minister for Trade Tim Ayres wants to make it clear to the Italian Government that Australia wants an agreement reached soon with the European Union (EU).

He said he wants to make sure that they hear the case, the strong case for highquality Australian produce and make a strong argu-

ment against protectionism and for agriculture market liberalisation.

Indi MP Helen Haines visited Canberra with prominent King Valley winemakers to secure Australian Government support.

“I have prosecuted this case pretty hard and the winemakers of the King Valley are very clear that it is not a legitimate claim from the Italians,” Dr Haines said.

“Our government is very keen to finalise this FTA as soon as possible, and in the process, Australia is looking to increase the amount of beef and dairy products that go to the European Union, but there are sticking points with the naming of Prosecco and Feta.

“I am certainly pushing extremely hard and advocating strongly as the local member that the Australian Government should not cave in on this one.”

In order to get a result in an FTA there has to be compromise from both sides of the table but if Australia was to lose the right to name these certain products it would cost the industries hundreds of millions of dollars.

“It’s been a huge growth industry in the King Valley, not just on the wine sales ($205m per annum), but the branding of Prosecco Road and the tourism element is incredibly important to the region,” Dr Haines said.

“I don’t want us to lose the capacity to call our wine what it should be called and that’s Prosecco, it’s well known and the Italians have renamed one of their towns Prosecco in 2009 to try and mount this case.

“It’s hardly a legitimate case of a historical name it’s a very different scenario to the French and Champagne.”

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson reported that, “the meetings were positive and both sides expressed hope for the rapid conclusion of the negotiations”.

“Australia aims to conclude a comprehensive and ambitious trade agreement with the EU as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.

To secure Australia‘s interests, the government continues to engage the EU on its priorities in the negotiations, including in

relation to GIs. “But the government will not agree to protect specific EU GI terms unless the overall deal is in Australia‘s interests, including by delivering new commercially meaningful agricultural market access for Austral-

ian exporters,” the spokesperson said.

“The EU continues to seek protection for EU wine GIs in the trade agreement, including Prosecco.

“The government is well aware of the importance of Prosecco to the Australian

wine industry.

“Australia‘s position remains that we should continue to respect the terms of the existing Australia–EU Wine Agreement, and that Australian industry can continue to use grape variety names like Prosecco.”

Record low regional unemployment, 7000 new jobs added VICTORIA has achieved a record low unemployment rate in regional areas as more than 7000 new regional jobs were added across the state in December.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures show that Victoria’s strong economy is continuing to grow jobs in towns and cities and on farms as the regional unemployment rate fell to 2.8

per cent - the lowest in the country.

“This is a fantastic result for workers and their communities as we start the new year with a real sense of confidence,” Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

“More jobs and a record low unemployment rate show that businesses are investing in regional Victoria and value its skilled, versatile workforce

and great infrastructure.”

Almost 600,000 new jobs have been created in the state when metropolitan Melbourne is included.

Unemployment across most of regional Victoria is now less than half of what it was in 2014 and Victoria’s overall unemployment rate sits at a historically low 3.5 per cent.

Victoria also leads

the nation with the lowest regional youth unemployment rate of 6 per cent - 1.4 percentage points lower than the next closest state, New South Wales.

More than 370,000 new jobs have been created In Victoria since the height of the pandemic economic shock in September 2020, the largest increase of all the states over the same period.

THE Nationals have called on the State Government this week to give hunters certainty over whether the 2023 duck season will go ahead, but new Animal Justice Party (AJP) MP for Northern Victoria Georgie Purcell is putting forward a case to have duck shooting banned for good.

Emma Kealy, the Nationals’ shadow minister for agriculture claims that duck hunting contributes about $65 million to the $365m recreational hunting industry each year.

On the flip side, Ms Purcell believes non-hunting tourism is where the government should focus, as that’s what people want.

Ms Purcell said the duck shooting “economic benefit” argument is “tired and boring” and alternative research that duck shooting proponents choose to ignore has shown that revenue from non-hunting tourism is far more important to the economy of regional communities.

“Most Victorians are actually deterred from visiting areas where duck shooting takes place during the duck shooting season, and the unsafe conditions on water

bodies on wetlands prevent kayaking, bushwalking and camping,” Ms Purcell said.

“Duck shooting hinders regional tourism year after year.

“Polling has consistently shown support for a ban on duck shooting across Victoria, with regional Victorians wanting the change as much as those in metro areas do.

“Regional Victorians are sick and tired of duck shooters coming into their communities and wreaking havoc on their wetlands and native wildlife.

“Duck shooting is an issue that Victoria has been dragging behind on for far too long, and it’s time for the Victorian Government to do the right thing.”

Ms Purcell, a Macedon Ranges resident who was previously the chief of staff of former AJP MP Andy Meddick, said they were close last term to having duck shooting banned, and they hope to make it happen this term.

Ms Purcell referred to polling carried out by Redbridge whose director of strategy and analytics, Kos Samaras, served as Labor’s Victorian deputy campaign director for 14 years.

“A ban on duck hunting shows absolute disregard for regional Victoria and its reliance on vital tourism dollars.”

Businesses must have applied for the $5,000 Small Business Immediate Flood Relief Program

by February 7 in order to be eligible for the Business and Community Sport Flood Recovery Grants stream which has a cut-off date of May 1.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said businesses should not be shy in coming forward for assistance.

“The October floods devastated our region, and these grants exist to provide businesses a helping hand,” she said.

“I encourage everyone impacted to make the most of this assistance.

“I’ve been speaking to businesses across the region and many were not even aware assistance was available.

“In order to be eligible for assistance of up to $50,000 you must have applied for the initial $5,000 grant by February 7.”

Support is available to businesses that require assistance with the application process.

“If you’re unsure of the first step please reach out to Business Victoria on 13 22 15 or the Flood Recovery Helpline on 1800 560 760,” Ms Cleeland said.

Council has say on electoral structure review LAST week it was reported that Strathbogie Shire Council will be one of 12 councils being included in the first round of Victorian local council electoral structure reviews.

As part of this review, 39 Victorian local councils will undergo electoral structure reviews throughout 2023-24.

The Local Government Act 2020 (the Act) introduced several changes, including that all rural shire councils must now be either: • Unsubdivided;

• Subdivided with singlecouncillor wards; or • Multi-councillor wards with an equal number of councillors per ward.

The reviews will be conducted by independent electoral representation advisory panels.

Under the Act, the Electoral Commissioner (or delegate) must be a member of a panel.

“The panels will consider if councils have an appropriate number of councillors and whether they should be one large unsubdivided area or sub-

divided into wards,’ Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said.

“If the council will be subdivided, the panel will look at how many wards the council should have, the number of councillors in each ward, ward boundaries and ward names.”

The review of Strathbogie Shire Council is in Group 2 along with the reviews of three other councils.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said council had hoped the community

would have longer to understand the process and provide feedback “We understand our community are being asked to provide feedback at short notice and this is why we requested an extension to the review,” Cr Binks said.

Despite only announced last week, preliminary submissions for the electoral structure review of Strathbogie Shire Council opened at 9am today and close at 5 pm on Wednesday, February 22.

Millions of dollars in funding secured for Nicholls FEDERAL Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell has welcomed millions of dollars in funding for projects in towns across Nicholls due to new rounds of regional and rural grant offerings.

Mr Birrell says it’s been a great start to the year for the region following the announcement of $2,350,000 for upgrades at Echuca Aerodrome, $10,000 Tatura Civic Halls Committee and $10,000 for the Tallygaroopna Football & Netball Club.

Mr Birrell says the Echuca Aerodrome will receive funding as part of Round Three of the Regional Airports grant program.

“This grant funding previously introduced by the Coalition Government will provide vital upgrades to the Echuca Aerodrome including resurfacing, extension of runways and improve drainage at the

The money will also provide important medical upgrades by installing a patient

transfer station and dedicated aeromedical helipad.

Meanwhile while two community groups will receive a

share of $1.45 million dollars of Australian Government funding from the Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program.

Mr Birrell said the Tallygaroopna Football and Netball Club will be provided with $10,000 to go towards purchasing seating for a community pavilion.

“It will now also help support our wider community to reconnect and recover from the recent floods,” Mr Birrell said.

The Tatura Civic Halls Committee has been successful in securing $10,000 to help fund the replacement of its floors.

“Preserving historic community places is essential and is vital to ensure small communities like Tatura have fit for purposes facilities to come together and host events in,” Mr Birrell said.

Removal of graveside mementos cause a stir

By GUS RIDDER LIBERAL Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on Health Minister MaryAnne Thomas to sack the directors of Remembrance Parks Central Victoria following the decision to remove cherished mementos from graves at cemeteries controlled by the Trust.

Ms Lovell’s call comes after grieving families were left devastated by the removal of personal keepsakes from the gravesides of departed loved ones without any warning or consultation.

Remembrance Parks Central Victoria is a Class A Cemetery Trust controlling eleven separate regional cemeteries including Bendigo, Eaglehawk, White Hills, Kangaroo Flat, Pine Lodge and Kialla West.

While the trust does not control cemeteries within the Strathbogie Shire, their decision has been noted and discussed on local community message boards.

On the Euroa Community Noticeboard online page, some commenters were particularly outraged by the decision.

Other comments acknowledged that this was standard procedure for many other cemeteries and had been happening for several years.

“I thought this was stock standard practice,” one said.

“My parents are buried in Lilydale cemetery and even 20 years when we buried them the paperwork stated we recommend no personal items be left

on the members gravesite otherwise they will be removed after 7 days.”

Ms Lovell described the removal of items from headstones without prior consultation with families as a heartless decision that has caused unimaginable grief and said the entire board of directors should be immediately sacked and replaced with an administrator until a more compassionate board can be appointed.

“The honouring of departed loved ones by grieving families is a very emotional issue and a compassionate cemetery trust

would fully engage with families before taking any action,” Ms Lovell said.

“The leadership of Remembrance Parks Central Victoria have displayed a heartless disregard for the feelings of these many families, and I call on Minister Thomas to take immediate action and remove the current board of directors and replace them with a more compassionate board.”

Following negative media regarding the removal of keepsakes, Remembrance Parks Central Victoria has now given families of remaining gravesites until February 6 to remove items.

Ms Lovell said this came as no consolation to the families whose mementos have already been removed, and the cemetery trust needed to consult fully before taking any further action.

This decision comes in the wake of Remembrance Parks Central Victoria’s controversial proposal in 2022 to introduce price rises for internment and cremation services.

This move was overturned following pressure in parliament from the Liberal Nationals Coalition and significant negative media regarding the issue.

Longwood enjoys national day of pride LONGWOOD’S Australia Day evening ceremony started with a free barbeque, cooked to perfection by the Longwood Fire Brigade members.

The community spirit was clear, with salads and sweets were donated by Longwood people and several residents and local organisations participating in the ceremony.

The cakes in the Tony Beddison Australiana Decorated Cake Competition were, as always, amazing.

The competition regularly shows off what talented people Longwood has.

Members of the Longwood Fire Brigade raised the Australian flag and the National Anthem was led by Rebecca Threlfell and Depute Mayor Paul Murray.

Kelvingrove Village Aussie fun day

By DIANE GRANT AUSTRALIA Day means many different things to many people.

For Kelvingrove Village senior residents in Nagambie it has meant living through many decades of change.

From World Wars to prosperity, learning about how to live in a multicultural country, accepting our aboriginal people’s culture, accepting migrant families who came across the seas who have made Australia home, enjoying a good way of life, of freedom, and the ability to make something of oneself.

It also means supporting and respecting the community, and country, in which we live and love.

Like many in retirement homes and aged care places and hostels, seniors do not always get heard about their concerns or opinions by councils and politicians.

This has not stopped them sharing their memories and doing activities with each other that give them some fun in their older years.

Such was the case at Kelvingrove on January 26, when some of the residents and friends shared a sausage, ice cream, lamington, lollypop and a drink for lunch before playing Aussie picture Bingo.

Mother’s Day afternoon tea dance in May to help the residents maintain brain activity and enjoy some social events now that they are moving

around a bit more, but still dodging the COVID-19 virus.

Celebrating the Aussie way

By DIANE GRANT NAGAMBIE folk celebrated Australia Day last Thursday with a day full of activities.

The day started with a sausage sizzle breakfast and entertainment at the rowing club garden overlooking the lake before the official Australia Day ceremony.

Included in the ceremony were the Australia Day ambassador and award presentations that recognise outstanding contributions to our community.

From noon, water activities were conducted on Lake Nagambie until mid afternoon for families to enjoy, while Kelvingrove Village held an Aussie lunch and games for their folk to take part in.

The day’s activities were rounded off by a sausage sizzle, sports games, a jumping castle, musical entertainment and an outdoor family movie by Movies on the Move, showing the Aussie movie ‘Oddball’ on the Nagambie school oval.

This came about by wonderful support by the Nagambie Australia Day committee, Go

Nagambie, the National Australia Day Council, Strathbogie Shire Council, Go Adventure watercraft and the Nagambie school.

The theme for 2023 was “We’re all part of the Story”.

Entertainment and the national anthem led by local artist Russell Turner began the morning’s proceedings before Lee Rowland, president of Go Nagambie, welcomed everyone.

He acknowledged the marvellous volunteer work done by so many people in Nagambie and the wider region and thanked all those who supported the day.

He acknowledged Ronda Richards of the Australia Day committee on her Order of Australia that she was honoured with last June.

Strathbogie Shire councillors Reg Dickinson and David Andrews were a tag team taking it in turns to speak as representatives of the Lake Nagambie ward.

They both showed that Australia Day is a time to reflect, respect and celebrate the spirit of community.

They said how Australia Day

celebrated all the things we love about Australia and the place we call home.

Such as the land, a sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy, the freedoms we enjoy and especially the people on our community.

Australia Day Ambassador, well known photographer and author Alice Mabin, kept the Australia Day audience enthralled with stories of her exploits across Australia for many years learning about droving, agriculture, different types of farming, as well as experiencing so many challenges and adventures that revolutionised and inspired her outback storytelling talents which resulted in three great Aussie books.

Each year for many decades there has been worthy locals who have been awarded Australia Day award at the Nagambie Australia Day ceremony.

This year was no exception.

The two councillors and guest speaker presented the awards to the locals who were recognised for all their volunteer service, endeavours and

community work.

The Nagambie Cemetery Trust received the Nagambie Community Group of the Year award and the Nagambie Christmas Carols organisers were the recipient of the Community Event of the Year.

Helen Heathcote of the Nagambie Primary School and football club was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year award and young Nagambie Primary School athlete Brodie Miller the Junior Citizen of the Year, as well as the shire-wide award for his sporting prowess in Victoria and interstate in 2022.

He was very happy to accept his Australia Day shire award plaque and framed certificate.

Each recipient group and individual was very proud to receive an Australia Day award, especially on our National Day and was presented with a framed certificate and basket of flowers.

The Lakeside Larks choir rounded off the morning’s ceremony very nicely and during the rest of the sunny summer’s day the other activities were celebrated by families.

SENIOR CITIZEN AWARD: Helen Heathcote was recognised with the award due to her contributions to the local primary school and football club.

AMA, Cleeland question surgery waitlist THE Australian Medical Association (AMA) has raised their concerns over the accuracy of the publicly published data from the Victorian Government regarding elective surgery waitlists, claiming the true numbers may be significantly worse than reported.

The AMA conducted an independent analysis estimating a backlog of 135,000 Victorians waiting for surgery, a staggering 50,000 more than the state’s official figure of 85,000.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland expressed concern about these findings and the ongoing high levels of waitlists in her local area.

“This is a crisis that cannot be ignored,” Cleeland said.

“With 135,000 Victorians languishing on waitlists, suffering from the impacts of deferred care, it is clear that the government’s current strategy is failing.”

To put this in perspective, the AMA estimated New South Wales’ waitlist was 60,000 lower than Victoria’s, and that the state is responsible for 44 per cent of the national backlog.

Over the last year the Northern Hospital elective surgery waitlist has blown out by 891 people while GV Health’s waitlist continues to remain stubbornly high.

“This is a shocking and unacceptable position our communities and health care workers are in,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Every single person on these waitlists has a story to tell and is dealing with a difficult condition every day.

“Our healthcare workers are doing an admirable job under immense pressure, but they need a workforce strategy and

The AMA indicated the Andrews Government’s plan to conduct 40,000 extra surgeries a year was unlikely to be achieved, prompting Ms Cleeland to call on the government to take immediate action.

“We need a comprehensive and wellfunded plan to reduce elective surgeries, with a specific focus on addressing the workforce shortage,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The government must invest in the necessary resources and support to ease the burden on our healthcare workers.

“I am incredibly passionate about regional healthcare and access to these essential services.

“I’ll be a vocal presence on Spring St, ensuring the government understands the immense challenges our communities face.”

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE 102nd running of the Wangaratta Men’s Gift couldn’t be decided by the naked eye Saturday night, with just nine hundredths of a second separating winner Matt Rizzo from training partner Jack Newman in a thrilling finish.

The backmarker of the race off 3.25m, pre-race favourite Rizzo stormed home in the final 25m to clock 12.429 and snatch what looked like certain victory for Newman (8.00m) with third placed runner Jack Lacey (8.25m) not far behind.

Rizzo said he needed every bit of energy running as the backmarker for the third straight heat to chase down victory and be one up on good mate Newman.

“I’m pretty stoked, it was a bit of bragging rights tonight, I thought he [Newman] might have just got me, but obviously did not

so it was good to get the win,” he said.

Novocastrian Rizzo said a lull in results after claiming the Stawell Gift in 2017 had him ready to call it quits on his running career.

But the 23 year old was inspired into running again by coach Bruce Gulliver who set him on the path of success in Wangaratta.

“I had run here once and I didn’t run that crash hot and Wang has a lot of history for me, it’s always about the sash and the history of it so I had to pencil it in,” he said.

Wangaratta Sports Club president Paul Hughes said despite the disappointment of having to push back the start of the carnival to 6pm and losing the Little Athletics events due to extreme heat, the operations of the event ran smoothly.

“The night ran well, the weather was great, the venue for athletics at the Norm Minns Oval is an asset for Wangaratta, the facilities are

Hughes said it was fantastic to see local runners gain exposure to big events, and found joy in watching young runners such as Sibel Primerano rise to the occasion.

“Young Sibel ran second in one of her races, she trains with us and she almost never speaks to me, I’ll give her a tip at training every so often and she looks at me like she doesn’t want me to come near her,” he said.

“But after running second last night she was so excited, she came running up to me and was really excited about the race, she didn’t win but she got in and amongst it and raced really well, so that’s a personal highlight for me.

“On the whole the locals all had a go, especially for people like young Aggenbach and the O’Sullivan boys, to get that exposure and realise where you’re at and where you’ve got to strive to and where you’ve got to get to for a bit success in athletics.”

Hughes thanked all local sponsors for their generous support during the event.

Euroa bowlers win away from home

Under 16s defeated in T20 by 30 runs

C Grade dominates Pine Lodge

By JACK WILSON Euroa 6-161 (F Paul 69, P Anderson 22, N Butler 22) defeated Pine Lodge 71 (L Murphy 3-11, J Penman 3-22) ON Saturday, Euroa C grade welcomed Pine Lodge to a hot day at Memorial Oval.

Captain Lucas Paul won the toss and elected to bat.

David McCullough and Nathan Butler opened for Euroa and after a very cautious start the first wicket

fell with the score at 1-15.

Fletcher Paul came in at three and with Butler saw the team to the 15 over drinks break at 1-30.

After drinks Paul and Butler got the score moving before Nathan was run out with the score at 2-44.

Captain Lucas Paul joined his son at the crease, the pair putting on a 29 run stand for the third wicket partnership until Lucas was caught and bowled.

Jake Penman and

Fletcher combined for a nice 41 run partnership with the boundary line being found on a regular basis that was until Penman was caught for 17.

Paul Anderson came in and with F. Paul they made 37 runs off 37 balls for the sixth wicket.

With three balls left in the innings, Fletcher was bowled for a well made 69.

At the end of the 40 overs Euroa made 6-161.

With 162 to defend, Euroa’s bowlers made early

inroads into Pine Lodge’s batting with Jake Penman and Fletcher Paul limiting the visitors to 5-36 after 10 overs.

After the early drinks, Euroa went after the final five wickets with Butler and youngster Leo Murphy getting the last five wickets.

Euroa won, thumping Pine Lodge by 90 runs.

Next week Euroa’s C Grade has a bye then plays Undera to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

Summary: Notre Dame/ St Brendans 10/79 Defeated Euroa 10/49 EUROA under 14s ventured to the back oval at Kialla for a T20 final against Notre Dame/St Brendans.

With coach Robertson refusing to leave the Creevey’s pool on Australia Day and usual scribe/ scorer Grant Davey busy feeding him lamb chops, the side was down three players, coach and scorer.

Stepping up to the plate was leading Ag teacher Lachie Cooke, assisted by crafty spinner Tomas Fogarty and up a grade young-guns Darby Hoare and Levi Berry.

Losing the toss, Euroa were made to field in the heat and despite Notre’s helicopter parents hovering hard, Euroa got off to a great start with tight bowling and excellent fielding led by Ollie Wilson.

Reducing them to 5/22 off eight overs, a fightback by the Notre team enable them to claw their way to all out for 79.

Leading wicket takers were: Ollie Wilson 2/3 (3 overs) and Cooper Goodall 2/12.

The innings change saw plenty of KFC arrive and having already beaten the combine side in a two day

game this season, some complacency may have set in.

Too many skyward shots caused wickets to fall all around Ethan Saxon, as he retired not out after his 20 balls.

Patrick Murphy and Sam Mills dug their heels in patiently waiting for bad balls to punish with excellent stroke play and were able to retire too.

The three retired players were able to resume their innings, but the interruption saw Patrick Murphy and Mills fall soon after, leaving Euroa 30 runs short.

Highlights of the game included Jack Walters’ onehanded athletic catch a-kin to his maternal parentage to remove the dangerous Gus Byrne off his own bowling; Ethan Saxon carrying the bat through an innings, as usual; and the team holding any opportunities for a catch.

Lowlights were coach Saxon not sharing the tip about his winning horse running and Cooper Goodall’s walk home from the outskirts of Longwood for once again not keeping his shots down.

This Saturday, we return to Kialla to face Old Students in a two-day game.

Defeat for under 14s cricketers at Kialla

By TOMAS FOGARTY Old Students 0-37 (W Jackson 0/8/, M Walters 0/8) defeated Euroa 8-33 (M Walters 11* retired) AFTER qualifying for the One Day Final, Euroa travelled to Kialla on Australia Day to play Old Students under lights in the 20 over format of the game.

Euroa won the toss and elected to bat.

As the openers walked to the pitch their intent was to pounce on any short balls and work the good balls around to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Unfortunately, Archie Wilson (0) was dismissed in the first over after a sharp catch at point and the Old Students bowlers, who are full of class, didn’t give the Euroa batters any opportunity to make runs throughout the day, bowling the perfect one-day line and length and getting through their overs very quickly.

Mitch Walters (11* retired), Walter Jackson (3* retired), Kusuma Wolfenden (4* retired) and the two Ollies, Swain and Wilson, batted solidly but were just unable to make a significant impact on the scoreboard.

Before they knew it, Euroa were 1/17 at the half way point and in desperate need

of a lift in the run rate if they were to have any chance in the match.

To their credit, the boys had a swing in the second half of the innings, sacrificing their wicket for the team, but were unable to find those crucial boundaries.

Euroa completed their allotted 20 overs at 8/32.

This score was always going to be tough to defend against the might of the ladder leading Old Students, but with runs on the board anything can happen.

The boys were full of enthusiasm as they set up with an attacking field to defend their total, knowing that they would have to take all 10 Old Student wickets, as just containing their batters was not going to win the game.

Although Euroa bowled well and kept Old Students to a relatively low run rate, the score they were defending was just too low and Old Students were able to win the match in the seventh over without losing a wicket.

Next week is the start of the two-day finals series.

Euroa have qualified for the semi-final and will head over to Deakin Reserve on Friday night to take on Notre Dame/St Brendan’s in what looks likely to be a very evenly contested match.

Race for top spot continues for local tennis combatants

By MARK BORTHWICK THE weather bureau was telling us Saturday was going to be a scorcher in Euroa ,so under our association heat rules all sets were reduced to best of six games.

The real scorchers occurred on the court when in A Division, Moglonemby went to Avenel to try and cement their spot near the top of the ladder. Grant Davey was in brilliant form only conceding two games and with Keoghan Hicks making a welcome return and Marlene Hanrahan

performing well with Kristen Davey, it was an all round victory winning eight out of nine sets and 32 games.

St Paul’s also vying for top spot played Benalla Lawn at home.

Sarah Ternes and Faye Mollison, Scott Watson and Declan Weston all won.

Then Megan O’Bree stepped in and wiped the floor, winning all three of her sets comfortably.

St Paul’s won eight out of nine sets as well and won by 21 games.

Longwood had a must win game at home against

Strathbogie and kicked off with Molly Redfern and Leanne Armstrong winning 6-3.

Longwood thankfully had some last minute fill ins which made it hard for them but Leanne continued her great for involved in all three of Longwood winning sets.

Strathbogie kept their finals hopes alive by winning by 17 games.

Junior girls team in good shape More players still wanted ahead of new season

By NICK McCABE ON Sunday, January 29, Euroa’s finest junior female footballers stepped out onto Memorial Oval for their first catch up and brief training session ahead of their 2023 campaign.

This year’s season will commence in April, and span across a 12 round home and away season with the potential for a two week finals series in August.

Matches will be played on a Sunday, closely coinciding with the ‘traditional’ junior football and netball fixture.

Currently there is a total of 24 girls that are ready to lace up the boots for season 2023, 11 of which fall into the age bracket of under 14s and 13 that are classed as ‘Youth Girls’.

Euroa female football representative on the junior football committee Melinda Watson spoke about about getting a side together.

“To give each girl the best possible chance of developing their game, our aim is to have two female teams - an under 14s and youth girls side respectively,” she said.

“However, for this to occur it is essential we recruit at least nine more passionate girls aged 11-17, no experience is required and you do not need to reside in Euroa with girls travelling from Seymour, Benalla, Longwood and Yea in the past to play for the magpies.”

It must also be noted the coach of the girls football teams is high school teacher Matilda Murrihy.

STRUCTURED AND FUN TRAINING: Training sessions are full of fun all whilst teaching correct and safe techniques to prevent injury.

BELLY FULL OF LAUGHS: There is never a shortage of amusement in the girls training sessions.

Ms Murrihy brings a wealth of football knowledge to Euroa having played for Williamstown in the VFL as well as various

local clubs.

In addition to this, Ms Murrihy’s teaching background makes her the perfect fit for the coaching role,

equipping her with all the skills needed to connect and communicate with young people all whilst striving to get the best out of them.
