hey say “time flies when you are having fun” and this year has certainly flown by – but it’s not over yet! Charlie Hutchings, the Managing Director and owner of Hundegger Australasia Pty Ltd, has always supported the German Hundegger operation philosophy “Our employees and our customers are the pillars of our company” and considering the longevity of some of the local staff and returning customers who purchase the Hundegger machinery, it is clearly working. The early days of the Hundegger K2 machine, then the multiple installations of the successful iterations of the Speed-Cut machine range (cutting and processing), has been expanded with the high-speed TURBO-Drive and super flexible ROBOT-Drive machines. They are all at the very heart of the timber wall frame and truss manufacturing process, with cutting, drilling, end profiling, slots and other forms of mortise and tenon profiles. These multiple processes on a single workpiece are all being performed in one place, at one time. Larger machines like the Hundegger SPM-2 and the PBA for processing large composite products and CLT panels are also installed and operational in Australia. So, what makes 2017 special? Well, this year in Australia there have been 16 installations to 14 customers who collectively own 30 Hundegger machines. It is clear to see that many of the customers are returning for their second, third or in one case - fifth machine. Matt Armstrong from Australian Timber &Trusses Pty Ltd in Nerang, Queensland, says “the addition of inkjet

printing, the speed of the machine and the built-in optimisation and relationship with Hundegger made it an easy decision to add the fifth Hundegger Speed-Cut to our operation”. That illustrates the strength and importance of the relationship on both sides – purchaser and supplier, and is a clear indicator that whatever Hundegger and their customers are doing – they are doing it right. The first Hundegger PBA machine for CLT panel processing in Australia was installed mid-year for the largest CLT plant in the Southern Hemisphere – Xlam, in Barnawartha, west of Wodonga and further, Xlam confirmed another Hundegger PBA machine is on order for their Nelson site in New Zealand. These two Hundegger PBA CLT processing machines are the first and second installed in the Southern Hemisphere and are consistent with the growing acceptance and in fact demand for CLT building products. In early 2017, Hundegger Australasia moved to significantly larger premises, employed additional Technical staff and a General Manager and with plans developing for a training and demonstration machine, are well positioned to play a leading role in the increasing move towards greener, more sustainable buildings - made of wood. Government policies for “Timber First” and new building codes for timber structures will see an increased focus on taller timber buildings and Hundegger are emminently well equipped to support that shift. With a customer pedigree the envy of many other suppliers, and a sales and technical presence that extends across Australasia, 2018 is already looking like an exciting year.
