D-day for Bright plan ALPINE Shire Council is set to decide its position on whether to approve the Development Plan for land on the outskirts of Bright, currently owned by Melbourne developers the Deague family.

Council this month opted to call in the decision on the plan, ensuring the matter has councillor oversight.

The property sits on the western edge of Bright township, forming part of the future Bright Western Gateway Development.

It is broadly bordered by Great Alpine Road to the north, Stackey Gully Road to the south-east, and the Tower Hill escarpment to

the south-west.

Alpine Shire mayor Sarah Nicholas said council will consider the application for the development currently known as ‘Tower Hill Village’ on Tuesday, July 5.

“The site was identified as an ideal area for urban growth during a land review in 2005 and rezoned in 2015,” she said.

“As housing availability becomes an increasingly serious issue, future development of the land has become an important step towards easing housing pressure in Bright and surrounds.

“We understand there is concern from some

members of the community about over development and the capacity of local services and infrastructure to handle an increase in demand.

“These concerns are understood and we thank the community for sharing their views with us.

“We have a number of factors to weigh up in making this decision.”

The land was rezoned from Farming Zone to General Residential Zone in 2015, with a number of planning controls in place.

Cr Nicholas said it is these planning controls that guide the current development plan submission.

She said that when the

rezoning was proposed, the community was able to object to outline concerns about future development on the site.

“With completion of the rezoning to General Residential in 2015, there are no further provisions under the Planning Scheme for community notification or engagement before the assessment and decision on the Development Plan,” she said.

“We know this lack of public involvement may concern people in our community, and we are committed to providing information about this, and future developments.”

The agenda for the July council meeting will be available on council’s website this Friday.

The meeting will be open to the public and also live streamed on council’s YouTube channel.

Cr Nicholas said the Development Plan is a highlevel step towards future development of the site - but it’s not a plan for subdivision, nor does it describe the houses or how many there will be.

She said any future development will be subject to conditions and oversight from the Alpine Planning Scheme through the council’s planning

“A Development Plan allows a developer to proceed to further steps in the development process, and places some requirements over the land to be developed to guide the future subdivision of the site,” Cr Nicholas said.

Reserve’s future plan Myrtleford y Recreation Reserve’s new committee ggets down to business

By MARTIN DAVIS THE newly-elected Myrtelford Recreation Reserve Committee recently met to discuss plans and set their vision for their threeyear term.

The new committee comprises chairperson Allan McGuffie, secretary Mike Clarke, treasurer Debbie Geddes and members Kaelah Barnes, George Brown, Glen Clarke, Monica Kennedy, John Panlook and Mandy Shepherd.

With at least 10 different user groups accessing the reserve and more interest from new clubs, Mr McGuffie said regular maintenance and upgrades will be a key focus.

“High on the agenda is the construction of the new toilet/shower complex which has been funded by Bushfire Recovery Victoria,” he said.

“COVID-19 has held back the start of this vital project, and when the planning permit is issued

by the Alpine Shire and the building contract is awarded, work will commence.”

Upgrades to the reserve entrance are currently in the planning stage, with concept drawings and meetings underway to address user groups needs and traffic flow into the future.

“The planned upgrade to public lighting, along with the recently installed CCTV cameras, will improve security of all buildings and

the safety of all users,” Mr McGuffie said.

“The connection and further upgrade of the solar power system at the reserve will enable the committee to keep the running costs down, allowing much needed funds to be used to maintain the reserve.

“The iconic grandstand and judges’ box have been a subject of discussions in the past regarding the safety of these structures.

“The committee requested that Alpine

Shire conduct a structural assessment of these buildings.

“The shire issued an order to ‘assess the safety risk to the public and determine a secure outcome’.

“The report received stated ‘The Rodeo grandstand and adjacent viewing platform have fallen into a state of disrepair...the poor condition of the structure and lack of safe access, present a risk to persons occupying these buildings’.

Publisher expands in South East NSW NORTH East Media (NEM), a division of Provincial Press Group and publisher of the Myrtleford Times/Alpine Observer, has acquired a controlling interest in Monaro Media Group (MMG), publisher of The Monaro Post.

MMG is a Cooma based publisher with offices in Jindabyne and Bombala and has grown since launching in 2006 to include The Post,

The Snowpost, Your Farm, Your Coastal Life and The Innovation Magazine, MMG’s chairman David Sheldon said the partnership would strengthen the company’s print and digital publications and enhance automation and marketing resources.

Founding ‘Post’ editor and director Gail Eastaway said she was pleased the partnership agreement had been completed.

“Our local MMG team has consistently delivered essential news and information to the Snowy Monaro region since we started The Post in 2006,” she said.

Contract awarded for airfield helipad

Debutants sparkle in belated ball

POREPUNKAH Airfield Association (PAA) has appointed its contractor to construct a new emergency helipad at the airfield.

Local company North East Civil Construction (NECC)has been awarded the contract to complete the $80,000 helipad, which will assist in getting people to Melbourne hospitals through the Air Ambulance.

Construction on the helipad will commence in July with the expectation the pad will be completed by September this year.

The helipad is being funded through the Federal Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.

By BRODIE EVERIST ELEVEN debutants and their partners from Marian College finally celebrated their debutante ball in style at the Ablett Function Centre in Myrtleford last Friday.

The year 12 students were supposed to celebrate the year before, but due to COVID-19 had to wait until this year, prior to their mid-year exams.

“It was a really successful night and they all enjoyed themselves,” organising committee president June Milne said.

In the lead up the ball, the students had 10 to 12 dance lessons to learn three traditional choreographed dances - the Pride of Erin waltz, the Maxina and the Evening Three Step.

“They certainly got to know each other on a different level, and then it all comes together on the night,” Ms Milne said.

For her the best part of the night was the ‘muck-up dance’ near the end of the ball, where the partners switch gloves and jackets.

“That’s another one of their dances, but more fun, not so

formal - and they’re more relaxed by then,” Ms Milne said.

“I think the group would have enjoyed that the most, and it’s good for the audience to watch.

“But I think they just enjoyed the whole process, really.”

Ms Milne said another ball would be held in September or October for the school’s current year 11 students.

The ball was organised by a volunteer committee under the auspices of the St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Alpine crime on par, but family breaches up

By BRODIE EVERIST ALPINE Shire’s criminal offence rate has remained the same since last year, well below the Victorian state average, but breaches of family violence orders are increasing.

According to Crime Statistics Victoria, the Alpine Shire recorded 548 offences in the 12 months from March 2021 to 2022 - the same number of offences as the previous year - but over a fifth were breaches of family violence orders.

Family violence order breaches have increased steadily from a low of 17 breaches in 2018, rising to 111 in the 12 months to March this year.

But Bright-based Alpine cluster commander Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said an increase in family violence breaches shows people have the confidence to

“It brings family violence from under the carpet and gives people confidence that they can report to the police and it’s investigated,” he said.

“It doesn’t necessarily correlate that more people are becoming victims of family violence.”

While property and deception offences over the past year were lower than the Alpine Shire’s 10-year average, more than half were theft-related.

According to Snr Sgt Incoll,

many thefts in the area are opportunistic, pointing to a recent spate of thefts of equipment from vehicles.

He also said thefts from unlocked caravans are particularly common, and encouraged residents to take common-sense precautions to protect their belongings.

“People need to take responsibility to stop opportunistic thefts,” he said.

Assaults and related offences have decreased from last year,

but remain higher than the shire’s 10-year average.

Snr Sgt Incoll said that assaults are often drug and alcohol related, and that local police are actively working with licensed venues to reduce alcohol-related harm.

He also commended the work of the shire’s Events Risk Assessment Panel, which works to reduce alcohol-related risks at public events and includes representatives from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Alpine Health, council and other emergency services.

Snr Sgt Incoll was pleased with the police record over the last year, pointing toward the 40.2 per cent of criminal incidents that have received charges, with only 29.1 per cent of incidents unsolved.

“It’s a testament to the work the police do and the assistance provided by the public,” he said.

COVID case steady, PCR testing ends

By MARTIN DAVIS ACTIVE COVID cases in the Alpine Shire were at 65 this week, after 10 new COVID cases were detected on Monday.

According to the Victorian Government’s Coronavirus data, this takes the total number of COVID cases in Alpine Shire since the pandemic started to 3325 - around 25 per cent of the shire population.

With most of the region having their second or third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Alpine Health has decided to stop doing PCR tests from today, with Bright and Mount Beauty officially stopping the tests, with the availability of RATs becoming easier.

If you need a PCR test you’ll need to go to Wangaratta.

For those still wanting to get the COVID-19 vaccine, Albury Wodonga Health will be doing outreach services in Bright on Thursday, July 28 and in Myrtleford on Tuesday, July 5 and Tuesday, August 2.

New president brings fresh ideas

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE MYRTLEFORD’S oldest festival has been saved this year, thanks to a group of locals stepping up in the role of committee, including new president Belinda Ramia.

The Myrtleford Festival, usually held over the Labour Day weekend in March, was cancelled this year and was in danger of a permanent end before volunteers put their hands up to help.

New committee president Belinda Ramia has attended the festival for years; she moved to Whorouly in 1996 and attended Myrtleford High School so the area is much loved.

“It’ so quiet and peaceful here; I grew up in the city and I’d never move back because I love the slow pace and safety

Ms Ramia said she was both excited and nervous for her new role.

“It’s a bit nerve wracking but I know I have the rest of the committees support for the job,” she said.

“I’ve been part of the community gardens for a while so volunteering isn’t new to me but this is a new

role and it’s one that my kids can get involved in too.

“I just didn’t want the festival to not happen because I think it would be a big loss for the town.

“We’re still in the spitballing, ideas phase but nothing is off the table.

“I did have an idea for the theme to focus on the lifestyle of Myrtleford which is what I think most people love about

this town so that could be something.

“My favourite aspects of the festival are the street party on Saturday night and the parade with all the floats and children helping out.

“Those main things will remain while we come up with some fresh ideas as well.”

MYRTLEFORD young business owner Amy Rogers won the Young Rural Business of the Year Award at last Friday’s Australian Rural Business Awards ceremony.

The 20-year-old Elkemi owner took over the streetwear business in May 2021, and after a year of lockdowns and restrictions, she said the national honour could not be more satisfying.

“Being a business

owner in such a great community is fulfilling,” she said.

“I do my best to listen to the community in meeting their needs and build relationships where customers can feel comfortable in the store, where we can provide quality and honesty, where respect and loyalty is reflected.

“This award wouldn’t have been possible without everyone's support, big and small, so thank you.

“This award is also a

reflection of the endless hours of hard work to ensure what I am putting out is my absolute best.”

Along with the honour of being named the Young Rural Business of the Year, Ms Rogers’ win will see her receive support from event organisers Spend With Us to promote her business.

The awards were the first of their kind, with organisers looking forward to the second edition in 2023.

PRIME Minister Anthony Albanese’s government has already done more in its first few weeks in office to advance reform of the Australian Constitution than all previous governments since Paul Keating’s.

Commitments to progress a referendum on constitutional recognition of First Nations,

the designation of Matt Thistlethwaite as Assistant Minister for the Republic, and earmarking a possible referendum on a republic in its second term if reelected all distinguished the Albanese Government from its predecessors.

The Real Republic Australia will soon release a discussion paper seeking feedback on its model for a directly elected head of state.

We do not support the old ‘politicians’ republic’ that failed

at the 1999 referendum when voters clearly rejected the idea of federal MPs picking their head of state for them.

Nor do we support variations of it such as the Australian Republic Movement’s latest model that inserts every politician in the nation into the process by restricting the candidates offered to voters to a shortlist approved by MPs in federal, state, and territory parliaments.

That is nowhere near direct election.

There are many worthwhile ideas in all the aforesaid recommendations by three parliamentary committees that have been put forward by crossparty committees as well as some we may not support.

But they offer good starting points for further examination and we should pursue them otherwise we waste an opportunity to make improvements to the way we as a nation are governed.

Lack of accommodation causing headache for snowfield staffing

By BRODIE EVERIST THE accommodation shortage on the snowfields is at critical levels, with many businesses cutting opening hours and some closing due to the lack of staff caused by a shortage of accommodation.

Business leaders have pointed to a rise in short-term holiday renting causing a shortfall in long-term accommodation for employees in the snow season.

President of the Mt Hotham Chamber of Commerce Steve Belli

said a lot of properties were sold during the pandemic and put into short-term letting.

“They’ve put them into short term accommodation, whether it be through the accommodation providers or Airbnb, so a lot of the staff housing has disappeared,” he said.

Mr Belli said he has already shut down one of his businesses, and may temporarily shut others due to COVID-19 and staffing shortages.

“The applications this year have dropped significantly from what

they were pre-COVID,” he said.

“A lot of the hospitality-type people have got different jobs and moved out of the industry, because it’s been so interrupted over the last two years.”

However, Tom Buckley, owner of Mt Hotham restaurant Miss Mary’s, said they aren’t struggling to find staff - they’re struggling to accommodate them.

“I’ve personally got dozens of applicants that would potentially be suitable for what we do, just nowhere to put them.”

His business is buying a lodge

to accommodate staff, but is struggling to have it insured against bushfires.

“It’s not a very healthy state of affairs,” he said.

Lisa Logan, hotel owner and president of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, said she hadn’t heard of businesses closing, but she knew of many changing their opening hours to adjust to the staffing shortage.

“We used to do breakfast, lunch and dinner and we scaled it right back,” she said.

Ms Logan agreed that the rising

number of short-term holiday lets was driving the accommodation shortage.

“We’ve found in recent years more people are investing into the resort, buying up some of the older style accommodation,” she said.

“That’s taking even more beds out of that small staff accommodation pool.

“Since the advent of Airbnb, more and more people are actually focusing on that model because they can get a better return doing that.”

Local’s plea for staff goes viral

By BRODIE EVERIST WHEN the managing director of Alpine Sprit Coaches posted on Facebook about the staffing shortage on Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain, he was just trying to help out a couple of friends.

“A few businesses up there were doing it hard and I just sat down the other night and thought wow, this is pretty bad,” Chris Bonacci said.

“We’re bringing thousands of people up to the snowfields, and if these things aren’t operating, how sad is it?

“So over a hot chocolate, I got on the community page.”

Mr Bonacci has since been contacted by people across Australia looking for work, as well as media outlets Channel 7, ABC radio and various newspapers.

“We’re getting calls from Darwin, Brisbane, Hobart, Sydney, Central Australia, western Victoria, western New South Wales - it has absolutely gone off,” he said.

In his initial post Mr Bonacci said businesses were struggling with a lack of staff on the snowfields, and offered to help with travel

and accommodation for those willing to work in Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain.

The company has since received a deluge of applicants.

“I am so proud of the youth,” he said.

“The amount of young people from the age of 16 to 21 that are sending me emails and messages - I can’t keep up with it.

“We’re collecting a big database of potential new staff for the rest of the season and

definitely next year.”

Mr Bonacci said they have filled the accommodation they have available, but will bus employees to the mountains if necessary.

“We’ve got cars, mini buses, we’ve got 24 seaters

and we’ve got coaches - so I’m sure we can get people up and down,” he said.

According to Mr Bonacci, staff accommodation remains a major issue, but he also pointed to pandemic lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 causing the staffing shortage.

“We’ve got people from Queensland and Western Australia that just won’t come back here, even after we’ve told them there won’t be any more lockdowns,” he said.

“They just don’t want to be stuck here again, because last year was a debacle.”

Alpine Spirit’s services from Melbourne to Mount Hotham, called the Snowball Express, have been cut drastically due to the staff shortage, despite popular demand for the service, Mr Bonacci said.

“The Snowball Express is the longest serving route bus service to the snowfields and for the first time in its history, we’re running at about 25 per cent capacity,” he said.

“People are ringing every day - we just can’t get the drivers.”

NEMA celebrates refugee week with friends, stories - and cake

By BRODIE EVERIST STORIES and laughs abounded at the North East Multicultural Association (NEMA) lunch at the Bright Pavilion last Wednesday.

Around 25 to 30 people attended the lunch to celebrate refugee week and all migrants who have settled in Australia.

Mt Beauty resident Hans Freyburger said he has been part of NEMA for 10 to 12 years.

He was originally born in Germany, but lived in Switzerland for seven years, where he met his wife, before moving to Australia in 1968.

While living in Melbourne he worked for an engineering company in Richmond until it closed in 1985.

He moved to Mt Beauty in 1992 “to get away from Melbourne”.

“It’s quiet - no crimes,” he said.

President of the Lions Ladies Auxiliary, Raelene Shallow, moved to Bright from Tumut in 2011.

“It’s not as quiet as it used to be, but it’s a beautiful spot,” she said.

“When I first moved I didn’t think I could live here, but there’s plenty to do if you want to get involved.”

NEMA also provide a number of programs, including tutoring in English and citizenship tests, IT lessons and multicultural playgroups.

Final feedback sought on Harrietville project MEMBERS of the Harrietville community are encouraged to share their views on concept plans to revamp key open spaces across the township, in particular a walks trail head near the Tronoh Dredge Hole.

The Alpine Better Places Harrietville Project aims to revitalise open spaces, including Tavare and Pioneer parks, trail head connections near the Tronoh Dredge Hole and the Harrietville Community Hall.

Alpine Shire mayor Sarah Nicholas said the concept design process began in July 2020 and three rounds of extensive community consultation had so far been carried out to inform the current design.

“This engagement included community meetings, plans displayed online and in hard copy at key locations in town, as well as online feedback opportunities,” she said.

“Thank you to everyone in the community who has so far shared their views and helped us develop the designs to date.”

Through this community consultation council’s project team identified three key precincts for future works: Harrietville Walks Trail Head (near the Tronoh Dredge Hole); Tavare/Pioneer Park Precinct; and Harrietville Community Hall.

In November 2020, council successfully secured Federal Government funding to complete phase one of the

Harrietville Walks Trail Head.

In March 2022 council secured further funding under the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Fund for the detailed design and construction of the Harrietville Walks Trail Head.

Cr Nicholas said before works begin, council was offering the community another say on the existing plans to inform the detailed design process and to ensure that any changes are captured before construction begins.

“We strongly encourage everyone in the community to have a look at the plans and complete a quick online survey to have their views captured,” she said.

“The number of surveys we receive will be compared to the total population figures of Harrietville.

“We will assume that anyone who does not share their concerns is generally in support of the designs.”

Hard copies of the survey will be distributed to homes in Harrietville.

Residents can complete the survey online or complete the hard copy and drop it back to the Harrietville Post Office or council’s Bright Office before the closing date of Sunday, August 7.

Bright Rotary Club’s big annual presidential party

THE Bright Rotary Club celebrated their incoming president and new board members at Italian restaurant Sole e Luna last Thursday.

The 46 attendees, including Myrtleford and Appin Park Rotarians, enjoyed a two-course meal with hors d’oeuvres as they oversaw ex-president Terry Gibbons hand over responsibility to new president Dee Hedley.

Club secretary and master of ceremonies Allan Poyner said they broke up the event with raffles, prizes and jokes to make it more informal.

“Everyone had a great night with good food and lots of laughs,” he said.

Ms Hedley said she was looking forward to taking on the role and was thankful for the support of past presidents.

While the Bright club has a strong membership, the new president

said she will focus on recruiting new members.

According to Mr Poyner, the club is planning to vary its approach to meetings and expand the activities of the club to attract new members.

The club has inducted four new members this year and two more are joining in the near future.

Rotary member Steve Gilliver was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest award for service to Rotary and the community, in recognition of his steadfast help for the Bright club, despite having moved to Beechworth.

The event had representatives from various community groups, including the Bright Probus Club, the Bright Chamber of Commerce, the Bright Autumn Festival committee, and Alpine Shire councillors Katarina Hughes and John Forsyth, who was also representing the Myrtleford Rotary Club.

Winter exhibition storms in to gallery BRIGHT Art Gallery’s winter exhibition kicked off over the weekend, with some great new works from Alpine artists and a number from the permanent collection.

Exhibition coordinator Annemarie Wiegernick said she had been looking forward to the new exhibition and hoped to see the community come take a look.

“The winter exhibition is displaying works, photographs and paintings by the Alpine artists,” she said.

“The Alpine artists are among the 200 artist members of the Bright Art Gallery; they don’t necessarily have to live here in the area, although most of them do, but we have people from Sydney and Melbourne as well.

“The second exhibition

during winter is part of the permanent collection.

“The gallery has more than 250 works in the permanent collection and they’ve been collected over the last 60 years.

“The theme for this one is the more contemporary works from the collection.”

Ms Wiegernick said running the gallery and putting on these exhibitions is a lot of work.

“Our gallery is all run by volunteers, including our committee and a big group of volunteers who help to open it up and run it,” she said.

“There’s a lot of different things that come into it including the website, newsletters, the lead up to exhibitions with entry forms and collecting the work and hanging it all so it takes a

couple of weeks each time.

“We now have an exhibition in every season; before it used to be mainly the autumn art show, which is huge, but now we have the winter one, the spring one and a big summer exhibition as well.

“This year’s winter exhibition has a few less photographs than usual but everything is coming together really well.

“We also have a great shop collection including jewellery, ceramics, handmade cards; all original work, which make great gifts for people.

“We always invite any local artists to contact the gallery to display and sell their work.”

The exhibition will be open daily until July 10 from 10am to 4pm.

Cricket club get grant to help in new mower hunt

By MARTIN DAVIS MOUNT Beauty Cricket Club has successfully acquired $25,000 as part of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program.

The funding will allow the club to purchase a new large area mower and expand the capacity of volunteers to maintain the outdoor community spaces.

Mount Beauty CC president Ross Wilson said the club’s current mower was getting too expensive to repair.

He said the club had an an agreement with the shire to look after Les Pert Oval and the recreation reserve.

“The club has been applying for grants over many years as

we have needed to replace our mower for a long time,” Mr Wilson said.

“Along with the FRRR funding we have also been successful in being awarded $6000 from the Alpine Shire which will also go towards the mower.”

Mount Beauty has been mowing the grounds to assist all the clubs and schools for several years, with the cost of a second-hand mower between $40,000 to $50,000, which Mr Wilson said is a much-needed investment into the community.

“The recreation reserve plays home to the Mount Beauty Cricket and soccer clubs and also the Dederang Mount Beauty Football Netball Club, while the Little Athletics and schools are using Les Pert Oval for their activities,” he said.

Whorouly CWA raised over $900 for Cancer Council

By MARTIN DAVIS WHOROULY CWA’s recent Biggest Morning Tea event raised more than $900 for Cancer Council.

President Jannette Allen was ecstatic about the number of people the group got to welcome back after two COVID impacted years.

“It wasn’t a huge crowd but none the less a generous crowd with many people putting money into the donation box,” she said.

“We raised over $900 which is amazing for the small Whorouly community.

“We had a range of people from young mothers with their bubs to CWA members and also quite a few men.”

The amount raised came with the help of the Whorouly Primary School.

The school raised just over $100 for the morning tea, which they attended during their break to help with the cleaning and enjoy some of the fantastic treats.

principal Pauline McPherson said it was great to help the CWA out in the same way they help the school throughout the year.

“We really appreciate their support through the school so to be able to return the favour was great,” she said.

“All the students brought a gold coin to donate.”

Myrtleford students become councillors for a day at shire MYRTLEFORD P-12 grade three and four students have been learning about the local government’s role in the community.

Students examine how rules and laws affect them and the importance of laws in society, as part of their civics and citizenship class.

They also explored cultural diversity within their community and how being part of various groups can shape their identity.

Grade four teacher Prudence McIntyre said as part of the learning, students visited Alpine Shire offices and met with mayor Sarah Nicholas and acting CEO Alan Clark this month.

“The students engaged in a ‘mock’ council meeting with seven pre-selected students becoming ‘councilors’,” she said.

“The remaining students were divided into three groups and given a brief: to come up with the features that they would like to see in the Myrtleford Splash Park, but due to limited funds the ‘councillors’ could only accept two submissions.

“Students then used their persuasive skills to try to convince the ‘councillors’ that they should vote in agreement for their particular submission.”

Myrtleford P-12 students gained firsthand experience in the Alpine Shire Council’s inner workings while presenting their ideas in front of the mayor.

Ms McIntyre said Myrtleford P-12 College appreciated the time and effort that which staff of the Alpine Shire took to accommodate the students while guiding their opportunity to learn more about local government.

Sky’s the limit for local schools’ collaboration

ONGOING collaboration between Marian College and Myrtleford P-12 is continuing to open up a whole new world of discovery for local students.

Earlier this month the schools were able to host mobile planetarium the Science Dome at the Education Myrtleford Performing Arts Centre (EMPAC).

and year seven, together with year seven and eight students from Marian College, were able to be immersed in a celestial experience without the cost and time of traveling to Melbourne.

The interactive incursion connected with the science curriculum, and covered topics such as:  the earth’s rotation and revolution and the connec-

tion to night and day, and to the seasons;  the revolution of the moon and links to the ocean’s tides; and  the stars and planets.

Marian College leader of learning and teaching, Andrea Skahill, said the cross-sector collaboration between both schools made attracting the Science Dome an affordable experience for students to enjoy.

Victorian farm confidence up

By BRODIE EVERIST VICTORIAN farmer confidence has grown in the last quarter, despite growing concerns over input costs and the war in Ukraine, according to Rabobank’s latest quarterly rural confidence survey released in June.

The survey shows Victorian farmers have bucked the national trend and reported an improvement in overall net rural confidence levels, due to well-priced milk contracts and ongoing strength in the beef cattle trade.

However, Victorian farmers flagged high input costs as a particular concern, as well as the potential impact of the conflict in Ukraine, with more than 50 per cent expecting a negative or very negative impact on their own business as a result of the war.

ager for Southern Victoria, Deborah Maskell-Davies, said the climate and commodity price outlook were both very healthy across all sectors, but pressure on margins from high input and production costs was tempering optimism about the year ahead.

“While these rising costs are being offset by high commodity prices at the moment, any reduction in those prices will put pressure on margins as production costs are just so high,” she said.

The survey, completed last month, found 31 per cent of Victorian farmers are expecting business conditions to further improve in the year ahead, up from 23 per cent last quarter.

The survey found 36 per cent of Victorian farmers are forecasting higher gross farm incomes in the year ahead, while 41 per cent ex-

pect their incomes to remain the same as the past year.

Porepunkah grape and cattle farmer Mick Dalbosco said good weather and high prices have helped maintain a positive outlook in the North East and shield farmers from high input costs.

“The last few seasons have been very kind to us and to see that coincide with high prices has been a real positive,” he said.

“It’s been a blessing for farmers in the valleys here.”

Ninety per cent of Victorian farmers surveyed were planning to maintain or increase investment in their farm businesses, and Mr Dalbosco is no different - he plans to grow his vineyards and his beef cattle operation over the next year.

“We are always trying to look for ways to expand and grow the business,” he said.

Program to help small rural property owners

A PROGRAM to help small rural property owners apply best practice land management principles is coming to the North East.

An information session in Myrtleford on Sunday, July 24 will help introduce the Healthy Hectares North East program, and explain the topics to be explored in field days and workshops during the next 12 months.

Conservation and land management educator, Sue Brunskill will introduce key topics - property planning, soil, livestock, pest plants and animals, water and biodiversity - and give an overview of the program at the free information session, to be held at the Myrtleford RSL at 10am.

The Healthy Hectares North East program will explore the fundamental principles and knowledge of sustainable, best-practice land management through face-to-face field days, online workshops and a booklet designed to provide information relevant to North East Victoria.

It is a collaboration between the Ovens Landcare Network, Wodonga Urban Landcare Network, the Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups, and the Mid Ovens Landcare Consortium, and is funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Project officer David Thorpe said it adapts the Healthy Hectares program - previously

developed by Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and Euroa Arboretum - to the North East region and delivers a series of field days for landholders.

He said a feature of the program would be the development of a whole farm plan for each of the participants’ properties, with the help of professional guidance.

“This is a great opportunity for small rural property owners to learn the principles of best practice land management and get help from experts to apply them on their property,’’ Mr Thorpe said.

“Participants will have the chance to work with experts and create a whole farm plan which helps them build that

capacity of their property while fulfilling their dreams and aspirations.

“Workshops and field days will be held on small rural properties so it will be a great opportunity for people to network and see how others are managing their properties.

“By attending the information session landholders will get a good understanding of how the program works, what they will learn over the next 12 months and how they can apply that new knowledge.”

Myrtleford Camp 5: 1942-1946 RT ONE PA

ULY 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the arrival of Italian prisoners of war at Myrtleford Camp 5, Whorouly East - one of 20 locations in the six states of Australia during World War 2.

To establish Camp 5, the land was compulsorily acquired under the Commonwealth Lands Acquisition Act from Garrett J Roach and Enoch Phillips, on the southern side of what was then known as “Wangaratta Road” (the Snow Road of today).

On April 12, 1942, Garrett Roach wrote to Gippsland & Northern, his stock and station agents: “I intend to take 250 sheep to your next sale.....they are fine wooled sheep.....the government has taken some of my land”.

Smaller parcels of land were then acquired from the estate of WJ Williamson and Michael Connor in September 1942.

Huts to accommodate prisoners and the supervising 51st Australian Garrison Company were constructed of timber and corrugated iron during the first year.

Prisoners were initially housed in four-man tents.

In the district, community reaction to the camp was muted; concerns about the compulsory acquisitions and security were expressed.

In response to censorship regulations, pages of the “Myrtleford Times” did not refer to Camp 5 in 1942; local wartime news topics centred on appeals for aluminium, instructions on making camouflage netting, shortages of newsprint, electricity, tea and superphosphate and the activities of the volunteer defence corps and aircraft spotters.

Most of the 18,164 Italians imprisoned in Australia had been captured during the North African Campaign in 1941, and many had arrived via India.

Another 268 had been captured as merchant seamen after Il Duce, Benito Mussolini, declared war on the allied forces on June 10, 1940.

Camp 5 was one of six camps in Victoria housing Italian POWs or civilians declared “enemy aliens”.

Other camps existed at Tatura, Murchison and Rushworth, where German POWs and interned civilians of Italian, Japanese and German descent were confined.

Murchison Camp 13 accommodated up to 4000 Italian POWs.

Other vital locations housing Italians were Hay and Cowra (NSW) and Loveday (SA).

Myrtleford Camp 5 inmates were army officers, accompanied by their attendants (“batmen”) and some merchant seamen.

Arrivals at Whorouly East occurred regularly from Murchison and interstate, alighting at the Gapsted Railway Station and marching downhill to the camp.

A dedicated power line from Beechworth and water supply pumped from Rocky Pont Bridge served facilities, including a hospital, recreation hall and chapel, canteen, extensive sports fields and gardens.

Camp food supplies came by truck and train, supplemented eventually by providing eggs, milk, meat and poultry from local farms.

Medical and dental services, opportunities to study music, drama and language and to play various sports were

available on site.

Roll checks were conducted three times daily.

D

uring 1943, opportunities to leave the camp were restricted to “parole marches” under guard or to working parties collecting firewood, clearing land and maintaining roads.

On Wangaratta Road, school pupils at Whorouly East often greeted marchers who anticipated Red Cross sweets would be thrown to them.

Prisoners were always visible in their burgundydyed ex-army uniforms.

Escape attempts were infrequent and short-lived.

Two escapes in September 1944, then another from a parole march in November, were followed by time in detention.

Daily newspapers available in the camp were censored to deter thoughts of escape.

Insubordination to an Italian officer and breach of camp regulations attracted frequent punishment.

Supervision was provided by the 51st Garrison, who were mainly veterans of World War 1, ex-British or Indian Army and Navy personnel, or those who had recovered from illness contracted serving in the AIF in North Africa or south-west Pacific in World War 2.

Initially, over 280 were posted on garrison duties, but by early 1944 labour shortages had reduced this to 185.

Camp Commandant Lt. Col. CJ Chisholm, a career soldier, was known for his concern for the wellbeing of all camp residents.

Division and rivalry grew within Camp 5 in 1943.

Benito Mussolini’s downfall in July, followed by his rescue by the Germans in September, led to bad feelings between fascists and army officers who supported the decision of King Victor Emmanuel III’s government to declare war on Germany.

As a result, in June 1943, two separate compounds - Compound ‘A’ for fascists (440 officers and other ranks) and Compound ‘B’ for royalists (254 officers and other ranks) - existed behind the wire.

By this time, the impact of further imprisonment was taking its toll, as evidenced by two young lieutenants in Compound ‘A’: “It is the barbed wire disease from which everybody is suffering..... there is a continuous relentless struggle of the nervous system against the fence”.

An opportunity to be recorded for posterity occurred on November

5-7, 1943, when an Army photographer captured many aspects of camp life, including named formal groups of 578 Italian officers and other ranks and the 51st Garrison at work.

Today, these images provide valuable insights for relatives and friends of prisoners and service members.

As 1943 progressed, changes were underway to address the increasing shortage of human resources in agriculture.

One possible way to address this was to harness labour from the prisoner of war population.

Many Camp 5 Italians responded, becoming “Land Soldiers”, enjoying the freedom and social interaction it offered.

Ahead laid a more purposeful life and an eventual return home to Italy.

By MARTIN DAVIS A COLD but sunny farmer’s market meant a wonderful morning for everyone coming out to pick up some fresh local produce in Myrtleford last Saturday.

Myrtleford Farmers’ Market coordinator Louise Benini said everybody who did come along enjoyed the wide variety of tastings and fresh produce offered.

“People enjoyed the music of Rudi Katterl while having breakfast or brunch and a Chakra coffee, as they did their shopping,” she said.

“I think everyone would agree when I say, it was especially good to see Pasta Adele back.

“Tastings of Goulburn Valley Pork sausages were a hit, with the only dilemma for people was choosing which variety to buy with thanks to the Anglican parish for cooking them to perfection.”

GONE: Overdue fees on library books will be removed across the Alpine Shire from July 1.

Libraries to remove overdue fees for all patrons BOOK lovers of all ages will no longer be charged overdue fees in libraries across the High Country Library Network, as local libraries adopt a growing international trend.

Network member councils - Alpine Shire Council, Rural City of Benalla, Mansfield Shire Council and Rural City of Wangaratta - will remove overdue fees for all members from July 1, 2022.

Alpine Shire mayor Sarah Nicholas said a core mission of libraries is to provide equitable benefit to all members of the community.

“Our libraries are a space for connection, learning and accessing important services,” she said.

“Library memberships give community members the chance to experience something new, and we want that experience to be fair and equitable for everyone.

“Overdue fees were removed for junior and under 18 members from July 1, 2019 - we're very pleased to be able to offer the same service to the rest of the community.”

Historically, library services have charged fees under three key assumptions - that fines bring materials back faster, generate revenue for the library and teach responsibility.

Cr Nicholas said there is growing evidence to show that these assumptions are untrue, and that fines tend to deter people from accessing the vital services provided by libraries.

“There is a growing worldwide trend to remove fines at libraries, which has been shown to boost both membership and borrowing rates,” she said.

“Our libraries are more than a book repository - they are community hubs, social meeting places, and service providers who help people learn, find jobs and access technologies.”

Overdue fines will cease to be issued at all High Country Library Corporate libraries from July 1, 2022.

Charges will still apply for lost or damaged items.

Borrowers will still be given a due date and members will receive a reminder if someone else has the items on hold.

School holiday activities MYRTLEFORD Library will be hosting activities next week to keep kids entertained over the school holidays.

On Monday, July 4 at 10:30am kids can get involved in art with Sam – recommended for kids aged 7–12.

At 11am on Wednesday, July 6, children can learn to make and fly gliders.

This is recommended for ages six and above.

On Friday, July 8, the library will be hosting two children‘s movies.

Starting at 11am, the first movie is recommended for ages six and above, while the second will start at 2:30pm and is recommended for ages nine and above.

Parents are asked to check the suitability of the movie for their children before booking.

“I just feel gutted that I can’t do something that I enjoy and love doing, and have built back up to get out to do.

“In my six games back I was having a ball out there, absolutely loving the competitive side of things and the feeling and euphoria that comes with winning.

“As much as you do get that as a coach, it’s a whole other level when you’re a player and being actually physically out there to contribute to it.

“Outside of that I’ll still be around, still be well and truly involved with the boys.

“We’re starting to build some nice form and momentum into the back half of the year, and hopefully we can carry that through even further.”

Despite having his fourth major knee surgery pencilled in, Sharp said he had no plans to even entertain the notion of hanging the boots up, determined to play the game he loves for as long as he can.

“I’ve just got to get my body right, my knee right - I haven’t even thought too much about any of that (retirement), but I enjoy the game and love it too much for it to be taken away from me,” he said.

“It’s been really overwhelming, the level of support from the community, the club, my teammates and the broader football community.

“In a really sad way, it’s taken something away from me, but it’s also shown me that some of the best relationships in my life and connections I’ve made have come from football.”

Savoy riding high after downing Devils PAYBACK was dished out by Myrtleford’s division one men’s side on Sunday, avenging their earlier season loss to Wangaratta City with a 4-2 victory over the Devils at South Wangaratta.

Savoy looked in control for the majority of the match, with Jack Milford putting the visitors a goal up in the 29th minute.

The second half was a frenzy of goal scoring, with Wangaratta’s Dan Kelly equalising in the 64th minute before Connor Caponecchia found the back of the net from a free kick to put Myrtleford 2-1 up just four minutes later.

Kaden Saric (70’) and Wangaratta’s Connor Delaney (75’) kept the crowd entertained with a goal apiece, before Lewis Holloway, who had been brought off the bench just 20 minutes prior, scored the clincher.

Coach Rob Caponecchia said it was always a great achievement to pull one off over Wangaratta.

“That does feel good because Wangaratta has had the wood on

us for a little while now, and to go over there with a fairly good crowd there on both sides, so there were a lot of spectators around,” he said.

“The first half was brilliant - the pre-game talk was, when we play good teams like Wangaratta and those bigger teams, we just need to stay in the game early, don’t concede so early and stay in the game as long as possible.

“That’s what we did, we were really disciplined, the formation was working well, we looked very comfortable.

“They didn’t have many shots on goal, I think we looked more threatening when we went forward.”

Caponecchia said the wholeteam effort displayed was a mas-

sive plus for the side going forward, with the side sitting equal third on the ladder with seven matches before finals.

“We said it had to be a team effort, we couldn’t rely on individuals, everyone had to put in a shift,” he said.

“From the goalkeeper to the defenders, to our midfielders and even our strikers, everyone put in a really good performance and it was reflected after the game - I haven’t seen them so excited for a long, long time.

“Everyone enjoyed the game and it was a victory that was well deserved, the boys did a lot of hard work and deserved the result.

“Wangaratta are still a really good outfit, they probably had an off day on Sunday, but we’ll take the three points and move into Boomers, which will be another tough match.”

It was a difficult day for the division one women, who came away from their match with Albury United defeated 10-0 after almost a month away from playing.

Coach Gabbrielle Paglia said the result came as a bit of a blow.

“It took us a while to warm up and get into the game, but we used the game to experiment a little bit,” she said.

“We moved people around to difference positions, and focused more on our passing.

“So for now we’re focusing on training and the next few games.”

Grants for sporting clubs

Small crowd meant for good golf

SPORTING clubs across Northern Victoria are urged to apply for the latest round of the State Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program.

Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said the program provides: up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment (including defibrillators); up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers; and up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness.

Ms Symes said the program would allow grassroots clubs across the North East to get muchneeded support to come back after the last two difficult years of COVID restrictions.

Since 2015 the program has provided more than 9000 clubs across Victoria with over $13.8 million.

The Bushrangers’ winger said being able to have the experience of playing for Vic Country was terrific and he is hoping he can keep pushing on throughout the rest of the season.

“Being able to play in the Colgate All Stars game was an eye opener...seeing what I have to do to reach that next level of my football,” he said.

“My ultimate goal is to be drafted into the AFL but there is

still a long way to go and a lot of time till draft night.”

While not being a part of the final squad for the U/18 National Championships is disappointing for Cappellari, he is still looking ahead to what is to come with the Bushrangers and hopes he can make the squad due to face off on grand final eve.

“At the moment I was disappointed at the time as I was really hoping I’d make the first team but I now know I just have to come back to the ‘Bushies’ and play some really consistent footy and hopefully get a look in down the track,” he said.

Only five rounds remain in the 2022 NAB League, and Cappellari hopes he and his Bushies’ teammates can continue to move up the ladder with the hope the team can push for finals.

“I’m hoping I’m able to put my best foot forward for the team, and to be able to get my name out there so at the end of the season I’ll be able to hear my name on draft night,” Cappellari said.

“I know there is still a long way to go but I’m hoping all the pieces can just fall into place.”

could be a significant turning point in Cappellari’s football journey with the belief he can make the top level and play in the AFL, but for now, he is looking forward to the remainder of 2022 and will see what 2023 has to offer.

“Next season if I don’t get drafted I’ll look to play for the Bushies again in my top age year and also Myrtleford when I can...hopefully I can play in the VFL,” he said.

“Another year in the NAB League won’t hurt as I feel I can get more development and it’s also closer to home.”

THE dream for many young men and now women since the recent rise of AFLW is to reach the ultimate level of Australian Rules Football and make an AFL list with the hope you hear your name called during that particular day in November.

The Alpine Shire has produced some AFL stars, including current AFLW Melbourne star Daisy Pearce, Collingwood gun Jack Crisp, and Fremantle Dockers’ forward Matthew Tabener.

For many, the path is simple, with scouts looking at them from a young age and being part of the underage National Championship’s sides.

Still, for one young Myrtleford and Murray Bushranger, the dream has become a tad more difficult after just missing out on donning the Big Navy V. Thomas Cappellari has been playing out his football this season with the Murray Bushrangers, who are currently sitting fifth.

He had the opportunity as part of the selection process for Victoria Country.

Cappellari got the opportunity to play against the Colgate AllStars and a squad of metro players for his chance to play in the National Championships.

Bombers too good for Whorouly THE challenging year for Whorouly’s senior footballers continued last Saturday, but positives were on display in their 20 point defeat at the hands of Bonnie Doon 12.17 (89) to 11.3 (69).

After keeping pace on the muddy and chopped up deck out at Bonnie Doon through the first quarter, the Lions let the lead balloon out to 53 points by three quarter time.

Whorouly coach Riley Calvene said despite the loss, the heart shown by his players through the final term to come within 20 points of a top four side was an immense positive.

“I put it to the boys at three quarter time to really lift,” he said.

“We’ve been around the mark and close, so I said it’s going to take a big effort to get across the line.

“Obviously we didn’t get there in the end but it was a pretty good finish, we showed a lot of resilience in that game.

“It’s been the story of this year: we seem to have good glimpses but we just can’t play a full four quarter game yet.

“We were second to the ball a lot, they set up really well around the footy they’re pretty well coached, well set up, so we were just slow to react.

“A lot of our young guys are playing good footy at the moment - obviously the results don’t really show that but I think we’re still taking

some big steps.”

Several Lions consistently turn in quality performances all over the ground, with regular forward Darcy O’Shannessey having a fantastic game down back and Adam Harris walking away with three goals to his name.

“Darcy’s been playing a lot forward this year - we didn’t really know where to play him so we threw him down back and he just blossomed,” Calvene said.

“He played a really good game, read the footy well, he was good one on one - I think he’s going to be a really good player for us in years to come.

“Adam is really smart, he gets to the right spot, he’s really smart with the way he leads and his running patterns.

“It’s good to see him kick a few goals every week, he’s a real consistent player, he’s been really good for us this year.”

The reserves outfit tasted their second win in as many weeks, coming in winners 9.8 (62) to 6.4 (40), with Ryan Harris named among the best in his 100th game for the Lions’ reserves.

Whorouly host Benalla All Blacks this weekend, with fiery contests expected in both grades.

Lions roar on netball court

SATURDAY saw a welcome return to form for Whorouly netball fans, as the A grade squad came out on top of a closely contested match against Bonnie Doon, taking the win 52-44 at Bonnie Doon.

It was neck-and-neck through the first quarter before the Bombers pushed ahead to a six goal lead by half-time.

The margin was pared back to one point through the third term, while the Lions pounced in the fourth quarter to carve Bonnie Doon to pieces and grab the win.

Whorouly co-coach Ebony Allen said it was a triumph to take the points over a quality side.

“We knew it was never going to be easy, they are a good side, but I’m very proud of my girls this week and how everyone stepped up to the task, especially in the last half of netball,” she said.

“It was a very tight contest for most of the match.

“At half-time we discussed going back out there and starting fresh - we were down by six but with the trust within the group, we knew we would be able to get ourselves back in the game and we did just that.”

Allen said Bonnie Doon seemed to tire as the match went on, but thanks to the fitness work done at preseason and training, a priority of the coaching team, the Lions kept fresh legs and maintained the pressure through to the dying minutes.

“The last quarter was by far our best quarter,” she said.

“The defenders worked really hard to win possession and when they did, our attackers were able to convert it with a goal.

“After coming off a disappointing loss last week, it was good to see the girls fight back from being down to get the win this week.

The Lions will play at home this weekend against second placed Benalla All Blacks - with a similar style of play and intensity from both teams, the match will likely come down to a battle

In other netball grades, Whorouly were consistently outdone by the Bombers, the closest contest coming in the B grade where the Lions came within three goals of victory.

Bright claims another massive victory IT was business as normal for Bright’s footballers, as the senior side demolished Moyhu 19.16 (130) to the Hoppers’ 7.2 (44) and the reserves ran out 98 point winners on Saturday.

The seniors’ match was essentially over and done by half-time, with the Mountain Men leading 8.10 (58) to 1.2 (8), but Bright refused to let up.

“I think we were up by seven or eight goals by half-time, and probably should’ve been 12 goals up, to be honest,” Bright coach Paul Harrison said.

“We missed some easy goals in that first half, but once we got in front the boys got a bit goal hungry and missed a few that we’d usually pass off and kick goals, but I think that’s going to happen in those games.

“Sometimes in the past we have thrown a few guys forward and changed a few things up, but we spoke at half-time and said at that stage we were one game clear in second and percentage, come the back end of the year, could be really crucial in trying to

BRIGHT’S A grade netballers were dealt another loss on Saturday, this time coming in the form of a 44-57 defeat at the hands of Moyhu.

“It was a tough game to lose, but simple errors probably let us down like not choosing the right option on passes and letting them dictate our play,” coach Bridget Flint-Chapman said.

“No quarter blew out, which is a positive, but two or three mistakes each quarter adds up over the whole game.

“The game could’ve blown

out in the second quarter but the girls never gave up, re-rallied and really pulled the margin back.

“Laura (Harris) was absolutely amazing in goals under pressure - in the third quarter, she didn’t miss a goal.”

IT’S said that footy is one of the crueller sports, often dealing the harshest hands to the least deserving - an adage which came true when Myrtleford’s Jake Sharp went down with yet another knee injury two weeks ago.

Mere minutes into the third quarter of the Saints’ clash with Corowa-Rutherglen, the 27 year old Saints’ co-coach was wrapped up in a standard tackle but the impact and slight twist caused his long-troubled knee to buckle, and he had to be stretchered from the ground.

“I had a fair bit of trauma go through it, and it definitely lines up with what I felt when it all happened, that’s for sure.”

Sharp was six games into his playing comeback after an ACL strain last June against Albury, but is staring down the barrel of another season spent coaching from the sidelines rather than in the thick of it with his men.

“It’s at least a 12 month recovery, particularly with the reconstructions being so close to one another,” he said.

Bombers slug out win in low-scoring affair

By BRODIE EVERIST THE Dederang-Mt Beauty Bombers senior footballers surged in a come-from-behind win against Rutherglen last Saturday, defeating the Cats 7.11 (53) to 5.6 (36) at Barkly Park.

The Cats took control early, booting three goals and two behinds against the Bombers in the first term, with Dederang-Mt Beauty only able to score six behinds in reply.

The Bombers scored 14 points in the second quarter, allowing them to slightly narrow Rutherglen’s lead, but the damage was done in the second half.

The Cats scored a meagre one point in the third quarter and two in the fourth, while the Bombers booted 14 points in the third term to equalise and then pulled ahead with another 19 points to end the game.

Dederang-Mt Beauty co-captain Elliott Powell was named best on ground, with special mentions for Brady Johnson, Phil Bellingham, Matthew Lee, Joshua Kable and Jordan Harrington.

Despite the win, the Bombers still sit at sixth on the ladder, just ahead of Thurgoona on points.

Next week they will face fifthplaced Yackandandah at their home oval, Dederang Reserve.

The Dederang-Mt Beauty reserves defeated Rutherglen in a nail-biting game, with the Bombers managing to stay three points ahead by the final siren, winning 8.4 (52) to the Cats’ 7.7 (49).

In netball, the DederangMt Beauty A grade team had an assertive victory against Rutherglen, leading throughout the game to win 58 goals to the Cats’ 28.

The Bombers’ Alysha de Koeyer was the primary scorer, taking 48 goals in the match, and was also named best on court.

Dederang-Mt Beauty have now risen to eighth on the ladder behind the Beechworth Bushrangers.

The B grade team also had a decisive win, scoring 43 goals against Rutherglen’s 26, while the C grade team overwhelmed their opposition 57 goals to 16.
