Precinct plan talks Federal opposition pp minister to tour Bright g Hospital p todayy ahead of federal election B SHANE DOUTHIE By THE ongoing quest to garner political support to help fund the proposed $40m Bright Health Precinct will continue today with federal opposition assistant minister for health and ageing, Ged Kearney, to visit Bright Hospital. The Labor Party caucus member, who would be a key figure should Labor win the federal election in May, will tour the site with Labor Indi candidate Nadia David.

Ms D David the M id said id one th key reasons she wanted Ms Kearney to come to Indi was so she could get a strong understanding of the significant issues facing rural and regional Victorians in accessing timely, affordable health care and aged services. “I want Ged to hear from locals about the problems getting in to see a GP, the out of pocket costs we have to pay if we receive urgent care at a regional hospital that people in cities just

don’t have tto pay, as well d ’t h ll as the staff shortages and gaps in services,” she said. Ms David and Ms Kearney will tour the Bright Hospital and Aged Care Hostel with Alpine Health chief executive officer, Nick Shaw, to see the site for the proposed multi-million dollar Bright Hospital Precinct development. Some $26m is needed from the federal government to deliver a 35 bed ‘high needs’ aged care facility as part of the

redevelopment, d l t with ith state t t funding being sought to help redevelop the hospital, including adapting the existing Hawthorn Village aged care facility for reuse as a health education facility. Mr Shaw met with Shadow Minister for Aged Care, Clare O’Neill and Ms David recently to talk through the proposed development of the precinct and the possibility of Labor support for the project. “Obviously, we aren’t

going i tto iirresponsibly ibl throw our support behind a project of this magnitude and sensitivity right before an election without taking the time to review it properly in the context of the broader health and aged care systems,” Ms David said. “But it’s fair to say Clare and the Shadow Cabinet are very keen to look at this further and see what we can do for Bright if we are elected.” Ms David and Ms Kearney
