BRIGADE’S BIG BIRTHDAY

Many questions, few answers Concerned shire residents ggathered for a meeting g last Thursdayy on the Dederang g BESS THE Dederang Reserve multipurpose building was packed with concerned attendees last Thursday for a meeting on the Dederang Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), but no representatives of the company proposing the project attended, leaving attendees posing questions without answers. The battery plan, developed by renewable energy company Mint Renewables, proposes a BESS with an indicative capacity of 400 megawatt hours (MWh) with a possible 4 hectare footprint beside the Dederang Terminal Station.

Dederang resident Sharon McEvoy spoke at the event, reportedly representing around 22 concerned residents, raising 11 points of concern about the battery project. These points included concerns around fire risk, environmental impacts, noise and the suitability of a BESS in the Kiewa Valley due to the valley’s amenity and agricultural value. “We are not against renewables, but strongly feel

that the Kiewa Valley is not the place for them,” she said. “We can construct the battery farm anywhere, but secure food production is often restricted to high rainfall and productive farming land.” “Despite the many advantages associated with electrochemical energy storage, there have been numerous self-heating and thermal runaway incidents at grid-scale BESS facilities over the past decade.” Ms McEvoy said the approval of the BESS could set a precedent for the construction of further battery installations. “With government

documents projecting capacity upgrades to the Glenrowan, Dederang transmission lines, our district is highly sought after for solar and battery development,” she said. Attendees asked about the battery technology to be used, physical plans for the project, decommissioning of the site, who will be responsible for the site and the impact of a fire or other calamity, but without anyone to speak for Mint Renewables the questions went unanswered. Nationals MP for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy hosted the meeting, and said he had contacted Mint Renewables by phone, email and post.

According to Mr McCurdy, planning authority for the proposal lies with the State Government as it exceeds 1 megawatt in capacity. Attendees also raised questions on how the proposal might be stopped, and another suggested a letter writing campaign to the state planning minster. According to Mint Renewables, they have partnered with a local landholder who is proposing to lease some of their land to develop a BESS adjacent to the Dederang Terminal Station. Their most recent newsletter on the project,

published November 1, says the proposal is in the very early stages of development, with feasibility studies and early engagement underway to inform its design. “The final size of the project will be highly dependent on the environmental constraints of the site (as well as the final selected BESS model),” the newsletter says. The newsletter says further community engagement will occur early next year. At the end of the meeting attendees formed a local group with Ms McEvoy as spokesperson. ■ Further details from Mint Renewables on page 13
