Busting for a bathroom TAWONGA South desperately needs a public toilet, according to local businesses, with many visitors using business facilities or even publicly urinating instead. Stephen Short, manager of a local newsagent, said the area needed a public toilet to stop people from urinating in his driveway. “Most of the tourists stop here and you feel sorry for them, but you can’t let every Tom, Dick and Harry use your toilets, he said. Across the road, pub owner/manager Angela Bell said she has never

stopped anyone from using their toilets, but said it is frustrating when visitors use the toilets without buying anything. Ms Bell said the council should ensure Tawonga South has appropriate infrastructure, like public toilets, especially with local building developments underway.

“They keep saying they’re going to expand the area but they need to do the infrastructure that goes with it,” she said. At the local bus depot and petrol station they have put up a sign saying their toilet is only for their customers and patrons of the restaurant next door. While the sign has helped a little, according to petrol station employee Helen Hansen, she said there isn’t space near the Mount Beauty public toilets for caravan users to park,
leaving them with few bathroom options. Despite the demand for a public toilet, council recently announced they have not found a location for one, however, Alpine Shire Council Mayor John Forsyth suggested last week council may have found a solution. According to council, they received a petition containing 837 signatures in February 2018, and agreed to investigate options to develop new public toilets in Tawonga South,
acknowledging there were limited options for council owned or managed land available. Since then, the announcement said, council has explored a number of alternatives but not managed to secure a viable option. “Council has been unable to reach a purchase price for the land that suits all parties involved, and the sale hasn’t gone ahead,” the statement said. “We understand the need for these amenities to meet
the demands of Tawonga South’s growing town centre, especially during peak holiday times, and will continue to explore other options for suitable land as they become available.” On Alpine Radio last week, councillor Forsyth admitted Tawonga South was “desperately in need of a public toilet space,” and said the shire chief executive officer was working on the issue. “We should have good news within the next couple of weeks,” he said.
