A can-do attitude

STUDENT nurses Sarah Timms and Bree Golden have tapped into the community’s generosity with their ‘Cans for Cambodia’ campaign, with a tremendous start to their fundraising for infrastructure and equipment in impoverished parts of the southeast Asian country. Following a work placement to Cambodia in November last year, the pair were inspired to begin fundraising, starting off with a donation from their work colleagues. Around three weeks ago they started collecting cans and bottles to deposit through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, where they receive 10 cents for every container. Last Thursday they had collected 3990 containers over the previous seven days and estimated they have been collecting around 600 cans a day.

They had planned to raise $10,000 by January next year, but as of last week they had already raised $3700. “We are overwhelmed with how quickly it’s picked up in the community”, Ms Timms said. According to Ms Golden, one local dropped off around 200 cans after camping at Wilson’s Promontory. Ms Timms said they also have a friend in the Gold Coast who is donating their container refund to the cause. She said they will document where the funding is spent to show supporters the impact of their help. “We will document the whole

thing when we go back, and we’ve got our Instagram where people can follow us and see what we’re doing,” she said. “[The funding] may not seem like much, but it’s going to go a long way.” The pair said they will be selffunding their 2025 return trip to Cambodia, so every cent raised will go to much-needed infrastructure and equipment. They initially planned to raise funds for medical equipment, like blood pressure machines, but under advice from their Cambodian contact, Phirim Noeur, they will likely be directing funds to hand basins for schools, toilet blocks and other necessities. “We’ve decided to put the idea forth to Cambodians because they

know what’s best for them, and let them decide what to do with the funds,” Ms Timms said. They thanked the community for their support, and thanked Porepunkah resident Brendan Sheehan for his help counting and dropping off cans. Those wishing to help out can deposit their cans or bottles at their bin on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah, though depositors are reminded that all containers must bear the 10c mark on the label. They must be unbroken and uncrushed, and the pair ask that depositors put bottles in boxes beside the bin to keep them separate.
