Tawonga Memorial Hall to be upgraded By MARTIN DAVIS TAWONGA Memorial Hall is set for a major upgrade after Alpine Shire councillors last week adopted concept designs favoured by a majority of the community. Council will proceed with the upgrade to retain the hall’s current stage and establish new amenities in a structure located outside the footprint of the existing building with access provided from the foyer. The upgrade will be fully funded by Bushfire Recovery Victoria with a grant of $850,000

having been secured by the council in August last year following an approach by the Tawonga and District Community Association (TDCA). The hall, built in the late 1950s, has become an even more valuable asset since the Scout hall closed in 2015, as it provide accommodation to school groups. Councillors’ decision followed extensive community engagement around two upgrade options for the hall. Last week’s meeting heard that council received 66 individual responses, with 74 per cent voting to develop outdoor facilities next

to the hall, rather than construct new shower facilities in the storeroom area behind the stage inside the hall. The upgrade will ensure the hall: retains its capacity to accommodate up to 60 people in overnight dormitory-style accommodation; can cater for up to 100-120 persons at events; has a new external roofed deck; meets environmentally sustainable design standards; has a new wastewater treatment system to handle occupancy requirements; and has improved storage, kitchen and car parking. Councillor Tony Keeble said a

majority of the people surveyed wanted the amenities to be outside and to keep the hall’s current stage, and the upgrade will secure the longevity of the community hall in Tawonga. The upgrade to the hall is a long time coming for TDCA president Mark Redmond, but “fabulous and exciting” for Tawonga. “The upgrades are essential to be able to give the community a memorial hall that’s fit for purpose for the next 50 years, and to be able to bring the hall to a current perspective for not only locals but for tourists as well,” he said.

BRIGHT is expected to, yet again, swell by thousands of people this weekend as tourists flock to the town to celebrate the Easter holidays. The autumn season, and this weekend in particular, is one of the biggest for the entire Alpine Shire, up there with Christmas. Bright Chamber of Commerce president Rupert Shaw was hopeful it would be back to a ‘normal’ weekend matching the number seen pre–COVID, which was usually a very busy one. “It’s a sellout weekend and is generally as busy as Christmas,” he said. “I can see no reason it wouldn’t be because previous weekends have been great in terms of the response to various events like the Buffalo Stampede which saw double attendance on last year. “We’re not expecting anything unusual except for a busy weekend and you can already see the campsites fill up; hopefully the weather clears a little. “We hope visitors enjoy our new Bright to Harrietville rail trail which is really nice, and all the usual attractions like Mt Buffalo, the mountain bike and walking trails and the picturesque views of Bright now that it’s starting to turn to autumn.” For more attractions and things to do, go to https://www. visitbright.com.au/. Authorities are urging campers to abide by all the regulations, particularly not leaving any camp fires unattended, while police are urging visitors and locals alike to take it easy on the roads.
