Record-breaking season By ANDY WILSON VISITORS to Victoria’s ski fields ended this year’s season with a surge in numbers during the final two weeks. The 2022 season, in response to two COVIDaffected years, saw visitor numbers statewide pass one million for the first time, an increase of 13 per cent compared to the previous record set in 2018.

Bounce-back sees visitation soar

Mt Hotham saw records fall across its seventeenweek season, as over 12,000 visitors crammed the slopes in the final two weeks. The total number of visitors to Mt Hotham for the season reached 213,000 - a whopping increase of 89 per cent on the 10-year average. According to Mt Hotham

Resort Management, the season’s cumulative snowfall was over 4 metres (440cm), finishing up with a healthy closing day snow depth of 110cm. An early snow dump in June also saw the season start a week earlier - the first early opening since 2000.

Falls Creek’s visitor numbers were slightly higher, with 14,000 visitors at the season’s end reaching a visitation record of 196,000 for the winter. Steve Belli, president of the Mt Hotham Chamber of Commerce, said the extra week of early snow gave local businesses a boost

as they continued to navigate recovery from bushfires and COVID-19. “Season 2022 was one for the record books with record visitation by new visitors and the return of all our friends from the past,” Mr Belli said. First-time skiers Grace Rodgers and Renee Brooker were surprised at how much the conditions had exceeded their expectations.

“We didn’t know it was such a vibrant place,” Ms Brooker said. Ms Rodgers said the excitement of other skiers made it a great place to socialise in. “We had an instructor on the first day and he had such a great sense of humour,” she said. “Who you meet up here can make all the difference.”
